List of channels on DStv

Digital Satellite Television , commonly abbreviated to DStv , is a Sub-Saharan African direct broadcast satellite service owned by MultiChoice and based in Randburg, South Africa. Launched on 6 October 1995, the service provides multiple audio, radio and television channels and services to subscribers, mostly in South Africa , Nigeria and Zimbabwe. DStv formerly had operations in Thailand under United Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), which is now TrueVisions.

In 1986, pay-television came to South Africa when a single-channel analogue service, M-Net, was launched by Naspers and local businesses/companies. For almost seven years, all of M-Net's operations were handled by a single dedicated company until 1995 when a second subsidiary company, MultiChoice, was launched. This company would take over the operations of M-Net including decoder sales, subscriber services (which were also available in local shops) and account management. MultiChoice would also embark on establishing presence in multiple countries outside South Africa which was effective to this day.

Not long after, a digital satellite service in South Africa was announced by MultiChoice and was launched that same year on 6 October 1995 as DStv, an abbreviation for Digital Satellite Television. On its launch, the debut television channels included M-Net, MGM, TNT, Sci-Fi Universal, SuperSport, ESPN, Cartoon Network, BBC World News, CNN International and Sky News. Over the 2 decades since then till today, television channels launch on the platform when channel carriage contracts are signed and/or renewed between MultiChoice and another media conglomerate/broadcaster and ceases transmission when channel carriage contracts are not renewed.

This was followed by the launch of new services including: W4 Eutelsat satellite with Ku-band services to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands in 2000, Interactive Television in 2002, the Dual-view decoder in 2003, and the DStv PVR decoder and the DStv Compact subscription package bundle in 2005.

The year 2008 saw the introduction of the HD PVR decoder, the XtraView decoder and the high definition feed of the M-Net channel. In 2010, DVB over IP (Digital Video Broadcast over Internet Protocol) and DStv Catchup services were launched, as well as the HD PVR 2P decoder same year and M-Net Movies 1 got simulcast in high definition for the first time. DStv BoxOffice (a film/movie rental/on-demand service) and DStv Mobile were launched in 2011. Since 2012, DStv has also been re-broadcast on Saint Helena, but with only 30 selected channels. As of 2022, Canal+ retains a 20.1% stake on DStv.

Anyone who became a little too familiar with their television sets back in the early months of COVID-19 probably remembers DStv’s WildEarth show on channel 183. Its sole purpose is to live-stream ‘safaris’ to millions globally and offer an escape from a crowded house. Now, it’s being pulled from DStv entirely at the end of April.

Instinct might be kicking in, compelling you to shout DStv down and force them to overturn the decision. But it’s not one DStv can make. At least, not entirely. It’s WildEarth’s, whose chair, André Crawford-Brunt, reckons it’s time MultiChoice starts paying the channel for its content.

Okay, you can let loose now and make your minds known to DStv. It won’t help much, but a petition is going around that’ll hopefully see them back on the air. Rather than wait for DStv to, as Crawford-Brunt puts it in his open letter , “do the right thing,” we’d suggest… watching it elsewhere. More on that in a minute.

“We have been begging MultiChoice for over a year to support us. We have made the case that not paying us anything for our content is unsustainable for us — although great for them,” said Crawford-Brunt. “We told them we have a large and passionate viewership, long viewing times, and that we represent everything positive about South Africa. We reminded them that we are the largest producer of local content in the country.”

In an interview with BizNews , Crawford-Brunt said that DStv had made promises to fund the channel’s search for content, which it failed to uphold, leading to the decision to remove it from under the broadcaster’s wing. Since then, a petition has reached more than 12,000 signatures urging DStv to save the channel, while close to R5 million has been pledged to WildEarth to further its “runway”.

For packages like the DStv compact, it’s advisable to go through the channels list before paying for it. Since it does not contain all the DStv channels, looking at the available options will help you decide if you can settle for it or if you will do better when you pay for a bigger package, like Premium or Compact Plus.

The DStv Family package costs R319 and it comes with 181 TV and audio channels . DStv family is similar to Compact but comparatively has a lesser number of entertainment options to choose from.

But when you need DStv for specific purposes, such as information or entertainment, and personal use, the family package can easily be the best fit for you.

You can get sports, news, movies, and much more. While it is true that this package can be a great option if you are looking to meet specific needs, you will need to look carefully at the channels list to be sure this is the best for you. There is just no point wasting money on premium packages if you can meet all your needs with this bouquet.

Is Mzansi Magic (161) available on Dstv Family?

About a year ago, DStv removed Mzansi Magic from the Family package. This channel is now only available to subscribers on Compact and higher bouquets. If you need it, then you have to upgrade to a higher package.

Also, SS Premier League (203) and CNN International (401) are not available on DStv Family.

Orlando Pirates will take on their oldest rivals Moroka Swallows in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday, 3 April.

Orlando Pirates kick off April with a trip across Soweto for a clash against their oldest rivals Moroka Swallows in another crucial DStv Premiership encounter on Wednesday, 3 April.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30 .

The latest edition of the ‘Original’ Derby takes place at the Dobsonville Stadium, and it’s the second of back-to-back assignments on the road for the Buccaneers.

Orlando Pirates’ last match yielded their first defeat of 2024 as they lost 2-1 against Sekhukhune United in a match played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The result ended a two-match winning run across competitions and saw the Buccaneers drop from second to fourth place in the standings.

Orlando Pirates have collected eight points in their last five games in the DStv Premiership, with six of those coming courtesy of wins against Polokwane City and Kaizer Chiefs.

Over this period, they have found the net seven times, while conceding six goals.

Looking to throw a spanner in the works is a Swallows outfit desperate to gain some momentum of their own, following a positive result in their last fixture.

The Birds ended a four-match winless run in the league with a dramatic 1-0 win away to Cape Town Spurs, with the three points earned in the game taking their tally to five in their last five outings where they have been beaten twice and played to as many stalemates.

The solitary strike in their most recent match was only their third during this period, while their defence has been breached six times.

Having jumped one spot to 13th place in the league standings, Swallows head into their match against Orlando Pirates looking to string results together in a bid to work their way up the log.

The quick turnaround between fixtures could prompt both coaches to refresh their line-ups following demanding assignments on the road.

Nkosinathi Sibisi, Tapelo Xoki, Thabang Monare, and Patrick Maswanganyi are some of the names that could be back in the matchday squad for Orlando Pirates after sitting out the match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium following their recent Bafana Bafana call-ups.

Meanwhile, Swallows will be without striker Gabadinho Mhango who is ruled out following a yellow-card suspension.

Coach Musa Nyatama could re-integrate the likes of Thabang Maponya and Letsie Koapeng, both unused subs in the game against Cape Town Spurs.

Key players

Deon Hotto (Orlando Pirates): The 33-year-old has been a consistent performer for the Buccaneers this season, ceaselessly impacting both ends of the pitch.

Through his tireless energy on the flank, Hotto has been especially effective on attack and boasts six assists in all competitions including one in each of his last two games.

Daniel Akpeyi (Moroka Swallows): The veteran goalkeeper’s quality and experience have shone through amid a tough season endured by the Birds.

A commanding presence in the penalty area, the former Nigerian international will be key for his side’s chances against a determined Bucs outfit.

Head-to-head

Orlando Pirates were triumphant in the last ‘Original’ Derby, winning 2-0 through a first-half strike from Evidence Makgopa and a Sipho Sibiya own goal late in the clash played at the Orlando Stadium earlier in the season.

Completing a league double on Wednesday will extend their winning streak in the iconic fixture to four games, while Swallows remain on the hunt for their first league win against their rivals since the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Since the Birds’ return to the top flight in 2020, the Buccaneers have been by far the more dominant side, winning four of the seven matches played with the other three ending in a share of the spoils.
