Less than 5,000 people live here in Safety Harbor and the town is only five square miles. The downtown stretch of Main Street is lined with trees, family restaurants, and local shops. It is a small town feel for sure, but this town also has a Resort and Spa!

These gentle, slow-moving giant sea creatures were once supposedly mistaken for mermaids by Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage to the Americas. When you see them up close in person, you may wonder if old Christopher had been at sea for just a bit too long.

Manatee viewing is a great family outing between November and mid-April, and fortunately Florida has several good spots to see these creatures. Dry Tortugas National Park is home to the impressive Fort Jefferson , built by the US Government in the 1800s. Although this is the key attraction of the park, the beautiful reef islands, seven in total, that make up the Dry Tortugas are themselves worth the trip. If you've ever been unlucky enough to be in Florida when it snowed (yes, that's actually happened), you'll understand why it's important to get your vacation timing right. Let's face it, most of us head to the Sunshine State for, well, sunshine. And we're not looking for that cold bright sun that sometimes peaks from a winter cloud. We're talking about luxuriously hot rays that warm our bodies from the outside in. With that in mind, the best month to visit Florida is any month between February and May. At this time, you'll avoid the coldest months of the year (November through January), as well as those which are so stifling you'll wish for a blizzard (namely July and August). Oh, you'll also miss out on hurricane season, which runs from June to November (peaking between mid-August and mid-October). Here's a rundown of why you should visit during these months:

February: This early month sees highs that average around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in Miami and its lows dip to about 61. These temperatures will, of course, get warmer the farther south you go and colder for those heading north. The sun will shine on average for eight hours a day, and the sea temperature will be a refreshing 75 degrees. Rain only falls about six days of the month, so it's pretty dry and mild in February.

March : The highs are higher during this popular travel month, hitting about 77 degrees with lows of 64. Again, you won't see much rain, but you'll get an extra hour of sunshine over that found in February. Tourist numbers are on the up and up during this Spring Break month, which means you'll see more crowds. The popularity of March vacations in Florida also means you should be prepared for higher prices on everything from flights to hotel rooms to restaurants to attractions, especially if you're visiting during a school break.

April : This beautiful month offers warm temps (a high of 82) and even less rain (about 5 days) than its two predecessors. It's a busy travel month due to Easter, but once that's over, you'll see the crowds and inflated prices dissipate.

In terms of tourists, you won't have to fend them off since this is a shoulder month (a.k.a. that time between peak and off-peak seasons). In the case of Florida, the shoulder seasons can be found between April and May and September through November .

May : If you're looking for warmth, soak it up with the average highs of 87 degrees during this low-key month. You can enjoy low prices, lots of hotels to choose from, and much shorter lines at attractions, not to mention plenty of unimpeded space to stretch out on the silky soft beaches.

Particularly during the winter months, when much of the country is shoveling snow and scraping ice, the best things to do in Florida incorporate clear blue skies, wide and welcoming beaches, and a steady drip of Vitamin D that packs a powerful endorphin punch.

There's more than 1,300 miles of glorious coastline to explore here, from Northwest Florida all the way south to the Florida Keys, not to mention your choice of big cities, glitzy coastal enclaves and laid-back surf towns for a base. Favorable weather, affordability, water absolutely everywhere and appeal as a multi-generational vacation spot are just a few of the factors that make the state so attractive to visit. Florida’s it city right now is Tampa , which has found a place atop nearly every superlative list of late when it comes to American cities on the make and where to move. The buzz has much to do with downtown’s new wellness district, Water Street Tampa , anchored by luxury hotels like The Tampa EDITION and the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street (with Tampa’s highest rooftop bar, Beacon ) and booming with fun places to eat, among them brunch-favorite Boulon Brasserie , gastropub The Pearl , and happy hour hotspot Lona for margs and tacos al pastor.

Make time to stroll or bike along the Tampa Riverwalk to spots like Armature Work s, a stylish food hall within an old streetcar warehouse, and Stones Throw to slurp oysters in the open air along the Hillsborough River. Crystal River

Most people come to the sleepy little Gulf Coast Florida town of Crystal River , about an hour north of Tampa, to swim with the many, many manatees that descend on spectacularly beautiful and cerulean freshwater springs like Three Sisters within the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. They come, muck like human sun-seekers drawn to Florida, to stay warm and survive the cooler winter months (November to March). You can head out on pontoon or paddling tours to snorkel with the gentle giants, an absolutely unforgettable experience, with operators like Birds Underwater Dive Center or Paddles Outdoor Rentals . And while you can’t approach them, don't be surprised if they come right up to you for a nuzzle, which is perfectly acceptable and simply epic. The Plantation on Crystal River , an old-school hotel with a lagoon-style pool and rooms right on the river, also runs manatee tours right from its watery doorstep. There are a few great waterfront seafood restaurants to hit in these fascinating Florida backwaters, too, including Waterfront Social , with a tiki bar on Kings Bay, and West 82 Bar & Grill for great grouper tacos and fish sandwiches.

Mount Dora and Lake County

To the north and west of Orlando, the great little lakeside towns of Clermont and Mount Dora in Lake County make for a different kind of sunny Florida getaway where you can spend time shopping antique treasure troves, snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the Alexander Springs Recreation Area and kayaking the mile-long Dora Canal between neighboring lakes with operators like Adventure Outdoor Paddle .

Winter Park, Orlando

Orlando’s theme parks are just one reason to plan a trip to the city. What many travelers don't realize is that Orlando has far more to offer than park-hopping, including one of Florida’s most exciting food scenes, especially in the Mills 50 district, home to a surprising array of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian restaurants.

Explore the pretty bricked streets of the Winter Park neighborhood (which feels, dare we say, almost European?), near downtown, from a home base at boutique an art-centric property, Alfond Inn , within walking distance of buzzy restaurants like Italian favorite, Prato , and the Saturday morning Winter Park Farmers’ Market. You can head out by boat to tour the chain of lakes nearby, too.

St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach

Two wings of the same bird, St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach, just west of downtown Tampa , deliver some of Florida’s most enviable white sand beaches, each with a distinct beach town ambience. Edgier St. Petersburg is known for its vast collection of street murals scattered throughout downtown, the Dalí Museum (with a great onsite cafe serving Spanish tortilla and crema Catalana) and grand hotels like the cotton candy-hued Don CeSar (on the beach), or The Vinoy , which recently emerged from a comprehensive renovation in 2023.

The spectacularly modern and intuitive St. Pete Pier —with its bikeable perimeter, rooftop tiki bar, beach on the bayfront, playground, and art installations—has completely upgraded the downtown St. Pete experience for pedestrians and is a joy to stroll.

Clearwater Beach gets crowded during peak vacation times but skews extra family friendly, with sands that are particularly powdery, shallow waters for swimming, nightly sunset celebrations at Pier 60, and stylish beach resorts fronting the Gulf of Mexico that include the Sandpearl Resort , Opal Sands Resort , and the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach .

Panama City

Spring breakers make for Panama City Beach. But neighboring Panama City proper is a Panhandle revelation home to an Oyster Trail with a dozen restaurants proffering the fruits of the local Gulf and a burgeoning Mural Trail , too. Less than a five-hour drive from cities like Atlanta , Birmingham, New Orleans , and Jacksonville, Panama City—with its historic downtown and easy access to the nearby sugar sand beaches of Panama City Beach—might surprise you. Right downtown, the History Class Brewing Company is a brand new gastropub that nods to the city’s history with old time artifacts in its design, and mango and guava infused wheat beer on tap. Don’t miss a visit to nearby Historic St. Andrews , ten minutes away, a funky fishing village with streets lined with oyster shells, a few decent waterfront restaurants for a seafood meal, and pretty Oaks by the Bay Park, with its highly Instagrammable and ancient oak tree, "Old Sentry," estimated to be more than 250 years old. Stay nearby at The Pearl in Rosemary Beach, where a boardwalk over the dunes leads to the most beautiful beach.

Jacksonville Beaches

The first major beach resort area you hit heading south along Interstate-95 into Florida, the Jacksonville Beaches are a string of several laid-back and surf-centric communities. Atlantic Beach—home to the oceanfront One Ocean resort, retro boutique hideaway The Hotel Palms and miles of dunes backed with stately oceanfront homes—and the friendly little surf community of Neptune Beach are our favorites for their untrammeled-by-the-masses appeal. If you’re here on the third Thursday of the month, the monthly Art Walk in Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach is a perfect outdoor outing before grabbing dinner at one of the nearby restaurants, like the open-air Sliders Oyster Bar or Flying Iguana , with excellent margs and guacamole prepped tableside.You can mingle with the locals during a beach cleanup event organized by Beaches Go Green .

St. Augustine

It’s an easy 33-mile road trip south from Jacksonville to visit St. Augustine, which claims to be the oldest city in the U.S. and is home to historic sites and preserved buildings, such as the 17th century Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (check the website for closures), a Spanish fortress with a commanding waterfront location. If you’re a surfer, catch some waves at Vilano Beach before sunset cocktails just back from the breakers at The Reef .

Naples and Marco Island

Continuing south from Fort Myers, the areas of Naples and nearby Marco Island make up Florida’s Paradise Coast, which has a tropical feel thanks to the mangroves (and mangoes, when in season, from late May to October) everywhere. You’re also close to one of the most renowned wilderness areas in the U.S., Everglades National Park . The Gulf Coast Visitors Center entrance is in Everglades City—an easy road trip of less than an hour southeast of Naples—where you can head out on pontoon boat cruises into the Ten Thousand Islands then feast on stone crab claws for lunch at the dockside Camellia Street Grill as air boats and fishing boats cruise by. For a beautiful beach stay that will facilitate all those nature outings and plenty of strolls past the outdoor cafes along Naples' Fifth Avenue, make your base LaPlaya Beach Resort or Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples. Another beachfront beauty, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples is better than ever after emerging from comprehensive renovations in 2023, with a brand new tower and Champagne lobby bar among the many upgrades.

Just south, on Marco Island, the JW Marriott Marco Island is known for its excellent rum bar on the beach, world-class spa and dedicated adults-only wing, Paradise by Sirene, with Balinese-inspired rooms and a private rooftop pool and sundeck.

Less than two hours south of Orlando, Vero Beach is the spot along Florida’s Atlantic Coast where things start to take a turn toward the truly sub-tropical, South Florida vibe—you’ll notice it in the emerald tangles of palms and sea grapes, and the that-much-bluer-than-justp-north hues of the water lapping the coast here. Lanai suites at the Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa —a boutique oceanfront spot that's just a quick stroll to all the shops and cafes downtown—make for a comfortable and convenient stay. And nearby Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa , also oceanfront, is particularly appealing for a couples escape, with stroll-out suites on the ground floor that are just steps from the beachfront hot tub and sand.

Make time to check out nearby Sebastian Inlet, popular with surfers and anglers, and plan to kayak into the Indian River Lagoon with a rental from the Environmental Learning Center, where you’ll also find boardwalks and marine life exhibits to explore. For something fun with kids in tow (or if you're feeling lucky), rent a metal detector from the Mel Fisher Treasure Museum and try your hand at treasure hunting at Wabasso Beach—after all, this is the Treasure Coast, and people still regularly find loot (coins, jewelry and the like) from the 1715 fleet of Spanish treasure ships that wrecked in a hurricane just offshore.

Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce, and Jensen Beach

Often overlooked by people beelining it between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale on Florida’s East Coast, Fort Pierce and Hutchinson Island just, in St. Lucie and Martin counties, are the spots to channel a slice of forgotten Florida on miles of uncrowded beaches (you can even go horseback riding on the sand here). Base yourself beachfront at Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa in Jensen Beach where you can get around easily by bike to explore. The Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center , on Hutchinson Island, fronts the Intracoastal Waterway and rehabilitates sea turtles, rays and nurse sharks, which swim in pretty lagoons fed by Indian River. Fort Pierce has a cute downtown area anchored by Sailfish Brewing Company and is the place to head out on a charter fishing trip into the Gulf Stream to troll for mahi.

Beaches of South Walton

For the kind of water you thought only lived on screen savers and sand so fine you’ll want to pop it into an hourglass, the beaches of South Walton in Florida’s Panhandle rise to the top. Vacation rentals where you can sip your morning coffee as dolphins pass by just offshore are plenty in spots like Santa Rosa Beach, Grayton Beach, and Seaside. In Sandestin, Hotel Effie , has a swanky rooftop pool and lounge. And iconic gulf coast properties like the WaterColor Inn , fronting the Gulf of Mexico, put you right along Scenic 30A, where you can drive with coastal views, stop to paddle in freshwater dune lakes (a rare phenomenon that happens only here and a few other places in the world, including Madagascar) or make a stop for some beer-tasting at the Grayton Brew Company . Ecotourism opportunities get you out enjoying Florida’s nature at every turn along this stretch of coastline, whether by ebike along the sandy backroads or from the seat of a kayak, exploring Northwest Florida’s best watery trails.

Anna Maria Island

Often overlooked by visitors drawn to the big name beaches of St. Pete and Clearwater, this largely residential island just south on the gulf coast, less than an hour from Tampa and about 30 minutes north of Sarasota, is a slice of old Florida many don’t realize exists. Anna Maria Island is a great place to score a vacation rental on a canal or fronting the Gulf of Mexico. ( Pineapplefish has the prettiest of the bunch), or you can stay in nearby Holmes Beach at the Waterline Marina Resort & Beach Club , with slips for travelers with boats in tow.

The best beachfront hotel to open of late is Mello on the Beach , an adorable low-rise property just steps from the sand that channels a Palm Springs vibe with mid century-inspired furniture, pastel color pops everywhere and a boomerang-shaped pool stocked with fun floaties.

Anna Maria Island is blissfully bereft of chain stores and golf carts are the preferred mode of transport. You can pedal around by bike everywhere, too, with a Surrey (or regular) bike rental from Beach Bums.

Sarasota and Longboat Key

To mix an artsy town with some of Florida’s most gorgeous gulf beaches, spend your vacation exploring downtown Sarasota and the neighboring beaches of Longboat Key, less than 90 minutes south of Tampa. Make a gulf front room at Zota Beach Resort or a beachfront condo with several bedrooms just back from the dunes (and a lovely beachfront barbecue area for grilling) at Sand Cay Beach Resort your base on this sublime stretch of coastline. For more luxury on the beach, level up with a stay at The Resort at Longboat Key Club , located at the pristine southernmost tip of Longboat Key. The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort is also slated to up the accommodation ante here in 2024 with a magnificent beachfront setting, 166 rooms and luxury condos.

When you need a break from the sand and sun, cross the bridge to downtown Sarasota, home to the magnificent Ringling Museum of Art, named for the circus baron and housing an incredible collection of European Old Masters paintings within bayfront grounds landscaped with tropical flowers and trees. For contemporary art, the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College , inside the town's gothic style former high school, is worth a visit. And when it’s time for slurping more oysters with river views, Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar is just a short drive south.

Miami Beach

Miami is booming with vacationers who wouldn’t have Florida any other way—that is, with its warm-as-the-Caribbean waters and intoxicating multicultural vibe. Miami Beach always beckons for a stay fronting the Atlantic Ocean at ultra-luxe spots like The Setai or The Faena , and Art Deco icons like adults-only property The National Hotel. But downtown Miami and neighborhoods like Brickell, Wynwood ,and the latest creative hub Little River are worth toweling off for to explore. Off the sand, book a room overlooking Biscayne Bay at the Mandarin Oriental Miami or the Kimpton EPIC Hotel , with one of the city’s most swoon-worthy rooftop pools. Make time to venture away from the sand and city and onto the water itself with a boat tour into Biscayne National Park that departs from Coconut Grove with the Biscayne National Park Institute and visits spots like Stiltsville (where wooden houses over above the clear water) and Boca Chita Key.

Not to be lumped in with Miami Beach, just south, pedestrian-friendly Surfside sprawls across a short half-square mile and beckons with tangible family-friendly appeal. The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club (a Gold List winner for 2024) is a favorite thanks to its Art Deco style, incredible bar program with a seasonal retro-chic cocktails, complimentary kids club, adults-only pool, and gorgeous beachfront setting. Surfside’s compact downtown district, along Harding Avenue, just a few blocks from the beach, brims with boutiques and restaurants (beeline it for the crunchy spicy tuna latkes at Josh’s Deli). From May to November—during walks along the beach in the mornings, in particular—keep your eyes open for sea turtle hatchlings making a break for the ocean.

Florida Keys

The Florida Keys and Key West might be one of the best weekend getaways in Florida that connects you with what a true vacation in this state is all about. Made mostly of coral, the islands that make up the Keys aren’t known for their beaches at all, although there are a few of those (the stretch at Bahia Honda State Park , good for snorkeling right from the beach in grassy flats just offshore, is one of the finest). Your best bet for watery fun in the Florida Keys, however, is to get out onto—and, preferably, into—the turquoise waters via boat trips, snorkeling excursions, or on a kayak or stand up paddle board. You’ll want to be back on land in time for the ritual of sunset spectating, of course, to toast with something tropical and frosty. Key West has the bulk of the resorts and hotels, as well as endless restaurants and bars to explore. But low-key, world class resorts abound throughout the Florida Keys, and include two noteworthy adults-only havens: Little Palm Island Resort & Spa , on its own private island, and Bungalows Key Largo . To feel like you're in Santorini, with white washed buildings and water views at every turn, Isla Bella Beach Resort on Marathon is truly transporting, too.

When most people think of Florida, they think of sunshine, theme parks, orange juice and alligators. But this former Spanish colony, which became the 27th state to enter the Union, is much more than that.

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other, it has mile upon mile of white sand beaches. This is the US state where you’ll find Miami and its immediate neighbor Miami Beach – both famous for their Art Deco architecture, Cuban culture, and beaches, of course.

More sun, sea, and sand can be had in the south, where the Florida Keys fling themselves for around 120 miles along the Florida Straits. Come here for more beaches, scuba diving, snorkeling, and the potential for one of the most picturesque road trips ever, thanks to the feat of engineering that is the Overseas Highway.

Panama City Beach on the Florida panhandle offers 27 miles (43 km) of white sand beaches on the Emerald Coast. The beach is a popular destination for residents of the southern United States as well as tens of thousands of high school and college students on spring break.

Besides having fun in the sun in the emerald green waters, this town of just over 12,000 permanent residents offers sports fishing on the gulf, plenty of golfing, marine parks including one for alligators, amusement and water parks …in short, something for everyone in the family.

Naples may have had rustic beginnings, but today this Gulf of Mexico city is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with houses selling for more than $40 million. As on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, development along the shoreline has been kept residential.

It got its name because the bay it’s located on was said to be prettier than the Bay of Naples in Italy. Besides its beautiful city beach, the nearby wildlife refuges make it a popular tourist destination.

These include Everglades National Park, Florida Panther National Wildlife Reserve and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary that has a 2.5-mile long boardwalk meandering through it. Naples also has vibrant arts and shopping districts.

8. Sanibel Island [SEE MAP]

Sanibel Island is located just off Fort Myers in the Gulf of Mexico. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway. It is known as a quiet, natural travel destination, well-suited for families.

Wildlife refuges take up more than half of this long narrow island, whose beaches are also popular as places to hunt for shells. This island of less than 7,000 permanent residents may have harbored pirates in the days of yore, if local legends are to be believed.

Aside from beachcombing and looking for wildlife, attractions include a highly-rated historical museum, a botanical garden, a lighthouse and an arts center.

7. Fort Lauderdale [SEE MAP]

No longer the Spring Break destination of popular imagination, Fort Lauderdale is today a sophisticated cultural center with an increasingly upmarket social scene. Located on the Atlantic Ocean about 23 miles (37 km) north of Miami Beach it is also known as the “Venice of America” due to its expansive canal system.

The city has an impressive tourist infrastructure with plenty of hotels, golf courses, marinas and museums. The city’s Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise-ship ports in the world, with megaships departing daily for the Caribbean, Mexico and beyond.

The most popular section of the city beach is called “The Strip” with eating and drinking establishments that run along the land side of the beach road.

6. Clearwater Beach [SEE MAP]

Boasting miles of white sandy beaches, Clearwater Beach is separated by the city of Clearwater by the Intracoastal Waterway. USA Today readers in 2013 named it Florida’s Best Beach Town. Besides laying in the white sand and swimming in the clear water there are also many activities offered such as fishing, sailing, kayaking, and dolphin tours. A lot of people get married on the beaches here.

A spot popular with visitors is Pier 60, a long fishing pier that hosts a playground, snack bar and day-long entertainers. At night, you can buy crafts from local artisans.

Stroll along Beach Walk where you’ll find drinking fountains and showers to wash the sand off you. If you come alive when the sun goes down, Clearwater Beach has a lively night scene.

5. Everglades [SEE MAP]

One of the country’s best natural treasures, the Everglades feature a unique combination of ecosystems that include swamps, sub-tropical jungles, saw-grass prairies and the largest mangrove complex in the Western Hemisphere.

Located in South Florida, much of the Everglades are protected within the Everglades National Park and provide shelter to a wide variety of birds, fish, animals and reptiles, including endangered species like the West Indian manatee, the American crocodile and the Florida panther.

One of the largest national parks in the USA, the Everglades National Park features four different visitor centers that provide education about the Everglades as well as a variety of tours and outstanding experiences.

Among the most popular of these is the Shark Valley Visitor Center, which in addition to educational displays, offers tram tours with opportunities to spot wildlife such as alligators, turtles, deer and herons. Also located at Shark Valley is an observation tower that presents fantastic views.

From the Gulf Coast Visitor Center, visitors can arrange boat tours to the Ten Thousand Islands, a labyrinth of mangrove islands, viewing manatees, dolphins and pelicans along the way. Also from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center, visitors can rent canoes and kayaks to explore the Everglades on self-guided tours.

The visitor centers of Ernest Coe and Flamingo also offer ranger-led tours and programs. An air boat tour is one of the most exciting ways to experience the Everglades. What’s more, numerous hiking trails, biking trails and fishing are also available within the national park.

4. Tampa Bay Area [SEE MAP]

The Tampa Bay area, on the Gulf of Mexico, includes Tampa Bay, a large natural harbor and several popular cities, including Tampa and St. Petersburg . Tampa is home to the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Family-oriented activities include Busch Gardens, a theme park said to have Florida’s best roller coaster rides as well as a zoo dedicated to animals from Africa’s Serengeti Plain.

As for beachcombing, St. Pete Beach can’t be beat. It was named the best beach in the United States and fifth in the world by TripAdvisor readers in 2012 because of its white sand beaches and clear water.

3. Orlando [SEE MAP]

Orlando is theme-park city, having more theme parks than any place else in the world. There’s Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Gator Park, to name a few, all of which bring 51 million visitors a year to this central Florida city of 2 million people.

This Sunbelt city doesn’t get hit by hurricanes as much as other parts of the state, which makes it a popular place to visit in Florida. One of American’s most visited cities, Orlando is also home to the University of Central Florida, which has the second largest college enrollment in the United States.

One of the most vibrant cities in the USA, Miami is best known for its Latin culture and sizzling nightlife. Located in southeastern Florida off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Miami is also a major port city managing the world’s largest number of passenger cruise ships.

The Florida Keys are a 120 mile long chain of tropical islands curving around the base of the Florida peninsula, connected to the mainland by a series of bridges. The most spectacular bridge, the Seven Mile Bridge in the Lower Keys, has been frequently used as a location for films including True Lies and Fast 2 Furious.

US Highway 1, the “Overseas Highway” runs from Key Largo, Islamadora, Marathon, Lower Keys and finally to Key West , the most distant and most famous of the Florida Keys. The waters surrounding the archipelago are protected by a marine sanctuary and contain many aquatic species and coral reef.

The islands are categorized in groups of Upper, Middle and Lower Keys. Beginning at Key Largo , the Upper Keys are where tourists will find a wider variety of accommodation, shopping, dining and nightlife. The Middle Keys and Lower Keys feature a more quiet and remote atmosphere.

Key Largo is the first Key reached on the Overseas Highway and is home to the underwater Christ of the Abyss statue, which can be observed by divers and snorkelers. Another of the larger Keys, Big Pine is where tourists can see the knee-high whitetail deer.

Islamorada Key is touted as the “Sport Fishing Capital of the World” as well as a popular diving spot. Located on Vaca Key, Marathon is popular for its tourist amenities and facilities as well as the Seven-Mile Bridge. People from around the globe are drawn to Florida and its weather -- which is beautiful pretty much year-round. If you've never visited this part of the country, you might not know just how big -- and diverse -- the state is. Indeed, Florida has many faces. Its zeitgeist spans the glitzy nightlife of Miami , seashell-strewn beaches along the Gulf Coast, Ponce de León's Fountain of Youth and the legacy of Spanish conquistadors in the north, the Panhandle's historic fishing towns, the theme park capital of the world that is Central Florida and so much more.

Hurricanes -- in concert with the pounding waves of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean -- have literally shaped Florida over the millennia, forming a peninsula that juts out at the southeast corner of the nation. The state largely consists of coastal regions, plus the central part of the state and a thin strip of land that looks like a "panhandle" to the northwest.

The Intracoastal, an inland navigable waterway, stretches along Florida's coasts and consists of canals, rivers, inlets, bays and sounds. Many of the state's most beautiful nature reserves are along the Intracoastal Waterway.

We'll talk about the regions that have the most to offer tourists -- whether you're visiting for a few days, a week or you plan to become a "snowbird" and make Florida your home during the winter months.

The Atlantic Coast

There are marked differences between the beaches, cities and towns along Florida's Atlantic and Gulf coasts. There is even more nuance when you visit the coastal Panhandle region. When it comes to Florida, not all beach getaways are created equal and varying destinations along the coasts have different personalities suited to different types of travelers. Let's begin with the regions along the Atlantic Coast.

First Coast -- Northeast

How to get there: Fly to Jacksonville International Airport (JAX).

Major destinations: Amelia Island, St. Augustine, Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Mayport and Ponte Vedra

Trace the coast from the Georgia-Florida border south to the southern edge of St. Johns County and you've found the region known as "The First Coast." As you may imagine, it was the first part of Florida settled by Europeans and it's the first coastal region visitors experience when driving from parts north.

There is quite a bit of pre-Colonial history here. It's commonly accepted that Ponce de León explored the region in 1513 and there's an homage to his "Fountain of Youth," which he claims to have discovered, at St. Augustine. In 1564, the French established Fort Caroline in modern-day Jacksonville and St. Augustine, the oldest continually inhabited European settlement was initiated by the Spanish in 1565. And that's just recent history. The Timucua Native American tribe lived on this land long before that -- a Timucuan site dating back to 1100 A.D. has been excavated near St. Augustine.

What to see: Plenty of people from Georgia, as well as Florida's Panhandle and points south, drive to the First Coast to enjoy its beaches, state parks and historical sites.

Start your exploration on Amelia Island , a barrier island whose residents have lived under eight flags since its settlement: France (1562–1564), Spain (1565–1763 and 1783–1821), Britain (1763–1783), Patriots Flag (U.S. President James Madison and Georgia Governor George Mathews ousted the Spanish in 1812), Green Cross Flag (Scottish musketeers in the pursuit of capturing all of Florida, 1817), Mexican Revolutionary Flag (1817), National Flag of the Confederacy (1861–1862) and the United States (1862–present).

Check out the historic downtown that emanates from Centre Street, where you'll find mom-and-pop restaurants, antique shops and boutiques. Anyone with a sweet tooth needs to check out Nana Teresa's Bake Shop on North 3rd Street and Fantastic Fudge (that also sells ice cream) that's right on Centre Street and the corner of 3rd. Then explore the island's 13 miles of beaches, including Main Beach with several covered pavilions and a playground or Peters Point Beachfront Park where you can swim, hunt for shark teeth or go fishing.

On the northern end of the island, take time to discover the 1,100-acre Fort Clinch State Park, with its 19th-century fort, beach, maritime hammock and marsh. Or, head to the southern tip of the isle for Amelia Island State Park, where you can ride horses, hop on a bike to explore the paved Timucuan Trail, bird-watch, fish, rent a kayak and sunbathe on a beautiful undeveloped beach.

St. Augustine is the other major First Coast tourist destination. People visit for the Spanish colonial architecture of the downtown district; the 17th-century Castillo de San Macros, the Spanish fort which is near the supposed location of Ponce de León's Fountain of Youth; and wildlife refuges like Anastasia State Park.

Who will love the First Coast? Northern Florida is the hidden bargain of the Sunshine State with plenty of affordable beach cottages and family-friendly inns plus a few resorts like The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and the Casa Monica Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection in St. Augustine. Families, retirees and honeymooners content with a nature-focused getaway are drawn to the First Coast. You won't find buzzing nightlife here. For that, look to Miami, Orlando and Tampa.

Space Coast -- Central East

How to get there: Fly to Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB), Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Sanford International Airport (SFB), rent a car and drive east to the coast.

Major destinations: Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach and Cape Canaveral

If you grew up watching "I Dream of Jeannie" on TV, you're probably already familiar with Cocoa Beach where the genie and her astronaut-master lived. If you're too young to remember that, you may instead know the Space Coast as home to Kennedy Space Center. But there is so much more to see, including 72 miles of coastline and one of the healthiest sea turtle and manatee habitats in the entire state. And, it's the jumping-off point for plenty of cruises that normally depart from Port Canaveral. (Note: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a no-sail order that has temporarily halted embarkation from ports like Canaveral through at least July 2020.)

What to see: Kennedy Space Center is a must-visit destination, even if you aren't a space nut. It's very well done with an informative bus tour of the complex; a "rocket garden" with rockets from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs; the opportunity to meet real astronauts; Space Shuttle Atlantis and other interactive exhibits plus a shuttle launch experience, and a few other "rides."

If you have your eye more on land and sea than space, check out Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near the space center and downtown Titusville. Its more than 140,000 acres of swamps, hardwood hammocks and marshes are home to 1,500 species of animals and plants. Even if you're not able to explore on foot, take in the seven-mile-long Black Point Wildlife Drive via car. There is an accessible manatee observation deck along the way. You can also hike and fish here or bird-watch year-round, though November through April are the best months to see waterfowl, heron, egrets and roseate spoonbills.

Another special place is Canaveral National Seashore with the longest stretch of undeveloped beach on Florida's East Coast. The 24 miles of sand include Apollo in the north (great for families with its gentle surf), Klondike Beach at the midpoint (nature lovers gravitate there) and Playalinda in the south, which is known to surfers but there's also a section where some visitors sunbathe nude (near Lot 13). On Mosquito Lagoon, you can embark on a canoe trip through the mangroves. Keep your eyes on the water and you may see graceful West Indian manatees, river otters or bottlenose dolphins.

Finally, check out Cocoa Beach -- one of the most popular beaches in the area where you can surf, parasail and rent a Jet Ski. Or, head to the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier where you can fish, listen to live music, grab a bite to eat and soak up the beach-town atmosphere.

This Is the No. 1 Surf Destination in the World

Hossegor, located along the southwest coast of France, was just named the best destination to surf.

The World Surf League's championship tour is well underway, bringing the best professional surfers to places like Australia, Brazil, southern California, and beyond to paddle and battle it out on some of the best breaks on Earth. And while you probably won't be getting out into the lineup with Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, Griffin Colapinto, Tatiana Weston-Webb, or Gabriel Medina any time soon, they at least may have inspired you to want to go out and surf on your own. And the travel insurance experts at Confused.com have a few suggestions on where you should go. 

The website released its list of the best surf destinations in the world, a study based on wave quality and surfer satisfaction via data from Surf-Forecast , and overall search interest via Google search data. After digging into all the numbers, the team named Hossegor, located along the southwest coast of France, the best destination to surf. 

"Hossegor ranks as the best destination for surfing in the world, with an overall score of 8.16/10. Hossegor offers reliable, excellent conditions for surfing and is known for its hollow and fast-breaking waves favored by experienced surfers. It has an average surfer rating of 4.25, and 48 percent of the recorded waves are clean and surfable." The team also noted in the results that the best time to visit is during the region's fall shoulder season in October when flights and hotels are at their cheapest. 

Hossegor was joined on the list by the legendary Mavericks, located just outside of Half Moon Bay, California, in second place, followed by Tofino, Canada, known for its year-round surf and fantastic wildlife spotting (seriously, watch out for whales here). 

Rounding out the top 10 spots are The Bubble in the Canary Islands; Biarritz in France; Cloudbreak on Tavarua Island in Fiji; Carrapateira in Portugal; Ponta Preta in Maio, Cape Verde; Uluwatu and Kuta in Bali, Indonesia; Pasta Point in the Maldives; Puerto Escondido, in southern Oaxaca, Mexico; and Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. 

While yes, this list is fantastic, it's chock full of spots that would easily be rated as expert-only. (Seriously, please do not paddle out to places like Mavericks or Cloud Break unless you really know what you're doing.) So we thought we'd give you three more suggestions for places to go surf if you consider yourself more of a beginner or beginner-intermediate, and asked our friends at The Inertia for their input. Here's what they (and we) suggest. 

Waikiki, Hawaii

If you're going to learn to surf, you might as well do it in the birthplace of the sport — Hawaii. Waikiki is a prime destination, as it often offers soft, rolling waves in beautiful azure waters. Plenty of schools are ready to teach you all the ins and outs, including Kahu , which says 95 percent of its students stand up with one lesson. And, as a bonus, you can drive over to Pipeline and see the pros surf on some of the most pristine waves on Earth. 

Nosara, Costa Rica

The tiny town of Nosara has become an ultra-popular destination for beach-goers, and for good reason. Not only is it stunning, but it also offers plenty of coastline for those who want to surf. Both Nosara Surf School and Nosara Surf Academy are great options and offer lessons for beginners, intermediates, and those looking to take things to the advanced level. 

Cocoa Beach, Florida

Florida may not be the first place that comes to mind for surfing, but you absolutely should not overlook Cocoa Beach if you want to paddle out. Not only does it offer smooth waves, but it's also the hometown of surfing's greatest athlete, Kelly Slater. So really, you'll be surfing in the shadow of greats.
