The 15 best places to travel in August 2024

Planning a summer holiday? From Alaska to Indonesia, Slovenia to Samoa, these are the very best places to travel in August

Sure, every month of the year can theoretically mean it’s holiday season, but the whole ‘school’s out’ element certainly makes August the prime time for stuffing a bag and heading off on a jaunt. However, the go-to summer holiday destinations snapping a selfie can mean sardine-like conditions, and accommodation is hardly at its most affordable.

Fear not, weary traveller. Save some room in your suitcase by leaving that cynicism at home – some lesser-visited patches of the world show their best side in August, so we’ve brought you a brilliant round-up for if you’re looking somewhere a little different. From the wilds of Alaska and the plains of East Africa to the winteryness of South America and the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, these are the best places in the world to travel in August.

Best places to travel in August

Carcassone, France

1.  Carcassone, France

France isn’t short of cracking holiday destinations. But may I make a case for the delightful Carcassonne, which isn't (completely) overrun with tourists like some of the others? There's the famous castle, sure, which is actually a properly good tourist attraction, completely beautiful and not too busy if you go in the morning. But there’s also the beautiful Cavayére Lake just a short one-euro bus ride out of the town, which is really quiet even in peak season, and has tons of kids activities and a more kid-free area too. You can sip beers in the main square by the fountain, do a classic French food shop in the supermarché, buy ridiculously good pastries at Pâtisserie Papineau and have lots (and lots) of cassoulet for dinner. You’ll also find a mixture of traditional museums and galleries showcasing local works and a number of lovely vineyards nearby. If you’ve got the car, consider a French road trip to hit Nice, Nîmes and more along the way.

2.  Alaska

August is slightly rainier in Alaska than earlier summer months, but with fewer crowds and lower prices, the benefits often outweigh the weather risks. It’s a wonderful month to spot caribou, wolves and golden eagles in Denali National Park, as well as grizzly bears, who are busy hunting salmon so they can fatten up before hibernation. They also nibble on the season’s abundant berries – blueberries are particularly fat and juicy in Alaska – and you can also taste them at the annual Alyeska Berry Festival in Anchorage. Don’t miss Alaska State Fair in Palmer, which marks the last days of summer with concerts, fairground rides and street food.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 10-15C/50-60F, interior areas – 7-18C/45-65F

Slovenia

3.  Slovenia

Slovenia might just be Europe’s worst-kept secret. In August, the capital Ljubljana and Lakes Bled and Bohinj are packed with locals and tourists alike, but if you do want to guarantee a crowd-free trip, there are plenty of lesser-known corners of this compact country to explore. As the holiday resorts sizzle, alpine regions offer respite from the heat, making it the perfect time to climb Mount Triglav. But if you really want to get off the beaten track, head east to wander around the pretty towns of Maribor and Ptuj, or go wine tasting in the surrounding Styrian vineyards. Slovenia has gorgeous towns around every corner, from Idrija to Kamnika via Radovljica, Brežice and all the rest.

Average temp in August: 20-28C/68-82F

Edinburgh, Scotland

4.  Edinburgh, Scotland

There is literally no better time to finally tick Edinburgh off your bucket list than in August, when the famous Edinburgh Fringe  (the biggest arts festival in the entire world) takes over the city. Be you a comedy, theatre, film or music person, the Fringe is a fun, fast, chaotic burst of all things silly and creative. There’s bars, street food, nights out and more, and we’ll be reviewing all the shows you need to know about, so keep your eyes peeled.

Average temp in August: 11-19C/52-66F

Iceland

5.  Iceland

There’s never a bad time to visit Iceland, right? August is the warmest month of the year here, but do remember that that means daily averages between 10 and 15 degrees celsius, so it is hardly sweltering. Still, balmy for Iceland, and visiting this gorgeous part of the world during the ubiquitously-bright summer months is an experience in itself. The grass is a little greener during August, and the warmer weather allows Iceland’s wonderful wildlife the chance to cavort through the fields. Yes, it is just like a fairytale.

Average temp in August: 10.5C/51F

East Africa

6.  East Africa

All kinds of adventures await in East Africa in August. The Great Migration is in full swing, meaning wildlife-spotting opportunities abound in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and it’s also one of the best times of year to track silverback gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Beach bum? Into your snorkelling and scuba diving? The weather is warm and dry (and the waters brimming with marine life) on Pemba Island and Zanzibar.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 27-31C/81-88F, interior areas – 20-26C/68-79F

Seattle, USA

7.  Seattle, USA

The Pacific Northwest has a reputation for being, how do we say this, a little bit drizzly. What is the best way to ensure good weather when visiting? Nothing is certain in this life, of course, but heading to Seattle and its surroundings in August is your best bet. The warm weather means outdoor activities aplenty, from city markets and food festivals to embracing nearby nature, while the ferries are also at their busiest during this time.

Average temp in August: 13-25C/56-77F

Sri Lanka

8.  Sri Lanka

Beach lovers will have the pick of the sand in Sri Lanka in August, with good weather expected pretty much everywhere in the north, east and west. Lower rainfall means an altogether more relaxed time, and August also represents the tail-end of the low season in Sri Lanka, so fewer crowds. It isn’t unusual to see blue whales here at this time of year too, and who wouldn’t want to see the world’s largest animal doing its thing?

Average temp in August: 26-30C/79-86F

Riga, Latvia

9.  Riga, Latvia

If you want an affordable European break in August, make it Riga. With its colourful old town and beautiful parks, it’s easy to while away the summer days here without breaking the bank. The warmest month of the year sees the capital come to life with open-air concerts, street performances, pop-up food stalls and firework shows.

Average temp in August: 14-22C/57-71F

Buenos Aires

10.  Buenos Aires

It’s winter in Buenos Aires, but the low season is the best time to live like a local, as residents often escape the city during the busier summer months. Culturally the capital is very much alive and kicking, with the two-week-long Tango Festival and World Cup showcasing the best of Argentina’s national dance with free performances, workshops and talks, as well as the pro-competition.

Average temp in August: 9-17C/48-62.6F

📍Discover the best  things to do in Buenos Aires

Bosnia and Herzegovina

11.  Bosnia and Herzegovina

A word of warning; it can get pretty darn hot in Bosnia and Herzegovina in August. That is more true in Herzegovina than Bosnia (Mostar tends to hover around the 40C mark), but refreshing salvation is at hand in the shape of the country’s fantastic mountains. Hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still developing, but an enthusiastic group of organisations have opened up mountains like Prenj, Maglaj (the country’s highest) and Vlašić, not to mention the Olympic mountains around Sarajevo. Keep to the trails though, for your own safety.

Average temp in August: 21-31C/70-88F

Madeira

12.  Madeira

Madeira’s mild temperatures make it a winner with travellers year-round, but summer is the best time to spot or swim with whales and dolphins, of which there are more than 20 species in the island’s waters. It’s also a fine time for scuba diving, canyoning and coasteering, as well as hiking the interior’s rugged hillside trails, which follow a network of levadas – ingenious aqueducts constructed between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries to transport water to communities living in the southeast of the island.

Average temp in August: 24C/75F

Samoa

13.  Samoa

Looking for a low-key paradise isle? Samoa is blissfully free of flashy resorts and tourist traps, letting its natural and cultural riches speak for themselves. Samoa is popular with New Zealanders and Australians looking for a little winter sunshine, so book ahead to nab yourself a beach hut (known as a fale ) and spend your days hopping between the islands’ must-sees, including Insta-friendly To-Sua Ocean Trench, the Alofaaga blowholes and Falealupo Canopy Walk.

Average temp in August: 23-29C/73-84F

Bulgaria

14.  Bulgaria

Ready for long summer days spent partying on the beach? Make a beeline for Bulgaria’s affordable Black Sea Coast resorts, where there’s a sun lounger (and a glass of rakia) with your name on it. If you’re after a little culture, you’ll find the antidote to the region’s Irish pubs in Burgas, where the International Folklore Festival welcomes traditional singers, musicians and dancers from all over the Balkans and beyond to showcase their talents in late August. Inland, adventurous types should tackle Bulgaria’s highest peak, Mount Musala (2,925m), before the snows return.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 23-28C/73-82F, Sofia – 17-29C/63-84F

Indonesia

15.  Indonesia

There are 17,000 islands in Indonesia – but few travellers venture beyond Bali . August brings the best weather and the inevitable accompanying crowds, so you’re better off skipping the chaos of Kuta and yogi-saturated Ubud for underrated isles such as Sumba or Pulau Weh, both of which boast white sands, turquoise waters and cheaper accommodation. Raja Ampat in West Papua receives some rain at this time of year, but don’t let that put you off booking a homestay and exploring its dazzling coral reef.

Average temp in August: 24-32C/75-90F

The Best Places to Travel in August

By Caitlin Morton

Best Places to Travel in August Kilimanjaro Kenya

Is there any month more tailor-made for a vacation than August? The peak of summer is the perfect time to jettison all 9-to-5 obligations and indulge in a trip, whether you’re soaking up the sun on an exclusive Mediterranean island or holing up in a bucolic corner of the Mid-Atlantic. Plus, with the E.U. opening up to U.S. tourists this summer and states lifting COVID restrictions, we’re more excited to book a flight than ever. If you’re hoping to squeeze in a vacation before Labor Day, here are nine of the best places to travel in August.

madeira portugal

Madeira, Portugal

This island, 300 miles west of Morocco, is synonymous with winemaking and wine drinking. The Madeira Wine Festival (August 29 through September 12) showcases how the islanders developed the unique oxidation process to create their trademark wine six centuries ago. There are events and celebrations throughout the island, but be sure to visit Cabo Girão, where the microclimate around the cliffs allowed Jesuits to cultivate malvasia grapes and develop the sweet malmsey wine. The vertigo-inducing skywalk here is the highest such installation in Europe, though it’s best to try it before imbibing too much.

Best Places to Travel in August Kilimanjaro Kenya

The Great Migration is one of the awe-inspiring natural spectacles on the planet, when more than 1.5 million wildebeest sweep through East Africa between July and October every year. In Kenya, the best place to watch the phenomenon is the Masai Mara National Reserve, with ample rivers (that’s where the real action takes place) and cliffs overlooking the savannah.

Set up shop at the 15-suite Angama Mara , which sits close to the Mara River and affords 180-degree views of the surrounding plains. Even if you miss some of the migration action, you'll be able to see elephant, buffalo, and giraffe from your suite, or take a Maasai-led walking safari to see even more wildlife.

Woodstock, Vermont

One of the most beautiful towns in America, Woodstock’s appeal extends far beyond fall foliage and craft beer. The city oozes New England charm in any season, which is clearly evidenced by the lovely and quaint Woodstock Inn & Resort . The 142-room hotel thrives in the summer, when the on-site garden boasts more than 200 varieties of produce that get sent directly to the property’s two restaurants.

And the seasonal delights don’t end there. Just down the road at the Billings Farm & Museum, the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House will enter its third year in bloom this summer. Thousands of sunflowers (which reach peak bloom in mid-August) will be planted in a maze-like structure, ranging in height from 18 inches to a staggering 14 feet.

costa smeralda sardinia italy

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is one of Europe’s most glamorous summer getaways, with stunning white sands and yacht-crammed waters off Porto Cervo. Lean into the luxe vibe by booking one of the suites at the Hotel Cala di Volpe , and remember to pack the kind of bikinis that were never designed to actually get wet for its ultra-exclusive beach club. The suites, decked out in whitewashed walls and Sardinian marble floors, are perfect for kicking your feet up between pool visits. At night, book dinner at one of the restaurants on Porto Cervo’s beloved Piazzetta—choose between the classic fish spot, Il Pescatore, or Novikov, an Asian fusion restaurant from owner and Russian restaurateur Arkady.

Utah is renowned for its national parks (its state parks are pretty spectacular, too), but there are plenty of reasons to visit this summer outside of the obvious. (Depending on where you are, the temperatures range from 70 to 99 degrees during August.) Get your dose of thrills with an ATV ride around the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, with 2,000 acres of sand that turn pink as the sun begins to set. Or choose from ten zip-lines (one of which reaches a speed of 65 mph) at Deer Creek State Park.

If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines, watch drivers try to break world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Bonneville Speed Week (August 7-13). Whatever type of activity you crave, Utah probably has it somewhere. While you're in the state, you might as well make a point to stay at the sensational Amangiri resort in Canyon Point: The remote location, food, views, and spa treatments are well worth a detour.

napa valley

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is one of the best places to travel in August, corresponding with the region's harvest season (August through October). The crowds tend to be a bit denser during this time, but you can still have a luxurious, intimate vacation—if you know where to look. Start by setting your sights on the Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley, one of the most exciting new hotels of the summer. When it opens, it will be the only Napa property that sits on an active winery. Add to that a dedicated kids club and world-class spa, and you have yourself one stellar stay.

For a not-so-average tasting experience, book The Legacy Tour onboard the Napa Wine Train. Expect sparkling wine samples, a three-hour tour of the valley, and four-course gourmet meal.

minnesota state fair

Summer is the season of state fairs, and few states do the tradition justice better than Minnesota. The nation’s second-largest fair (after Texas, of course) was canceled in 2020, but Gov. Tim Walz is hopeful that this year “should be a pretty close to normal event.” And in this case, normal means outdoor beer festivals, classic car shows, Miranda Lambert and Tim McGraw concerts, and 500 food stands serving up all things deep-fried and skewered.

The fair takes place from August 26 to September 6 this year, giving you plenty of August wiggle room to explore nearby Minneapolis (about 15 minutes away from the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights), a city which only gets more interesting the longer you stay there.

north fork long island

North Fork, Long Island

Each summer, the North Fork of Long Island offers a welcome contrast to the hectic Hamptons on the southern spike. Instead of imported city glitz, it’s a countrified hideaway, mostly full of family farms, vineyards, and small towns filled with clapboard homes. While the Hamptons crowds struggle to find a spot on the beach, spend the month of August exploring the quiet charm of this charming area.

Southold’s Custer Observatory Institute hosts stargazing and meteor-spotting parties on Saturday nights, and you can try oyster-shucking at Greenport’s Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market. Most vineyards here boost their visitor offerings in summer, like Bedell Cellars , which has live music in its tap room on Sunday afternoons in August. Take the seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport to Shelter Island for a stay at The Chequit , a 37-room Victorian inn from 1872 that made our Hot List in 2016.

isla holbox mexico

Isla Holbox, Mexico

May through September is whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean, when the magnificent beasts emerge in the warm waters between Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy every year. August is a particularly great month for whale sightings due to the amount of plankton in the water, which the whales gather to feed on.

This year, head to dreamy Isla Holbox to celebrate Whale Shark Day on August 30—no better time to try your hand at a once-in-a-lifetime whale shark dive. Eco-boutique hotel Las Nubes de Holbox is the only hotel adjacent to the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, and connects its guests to sustainable whale shark tours around the island’s stunning natural landscapes. Afterwards, relax at the Orquídea Spa with a salt bath or facial of organic Mexican products.

15 Best Cheap Places to Travel in August

Written by Anietra Hamper and Shandley McMurray Updated May 3, 2023

August is a hot month for summer travel, but you can use that to your advantage to hit destinations that give you more for your money, especially if you time your trip for the very end of the month.

Paradise Beach, Soufriere Bay, St. Lucia

If you wait for the last week of August, right on the cusp of the fall shoulder season, you'll be able to find more affordable rates on hotels, tours, and flights. This is when most people stay home to get the kids ready for going back to school.

Another tip for scoring a great deal in August: be flexible. Last-minute vacation packages often open on short notice in order to fill rooms and airline seats that didn't sell. And, choose your destination wisely. Popular winter beach vacations are super cheap at this time of the year.

For more great ideas on where to visit this late in summer, see our list of the best cheap places to travel in August.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

2. berlin, germany, 3. ocho rios, jamaica, 4. barbados, 5. cancun, mexico, 6. key west, florida, usa, 7. quito, ecuador, 8. new york city, new york, usa, 9. st. lucia, 10. kuala lumpur, malaysia, 11. cayman islands, 12. philadelphia, pennsylvania, usa, 13. milan, italy, 14. rio de janeiro, brazil, 15. bangkok, thailand, map of cheap places to travel in august.

Las Vegas at night

If you like it hot, Las Vegas will be your jam. A veritable hot house at the end of summer, this non-stop vacation destination is one of the best cheap places to travel in August. Most tourists find the heat too unbearable to enjoy this city of lights, so they steer clear during the summer.

The late summer tourist vacancy works in your favor, especially at higher-end hotels and resorts that would rather fill a room for cheap than not fill a room at all. Flights to Las Vegas follow suit. There are always deals to the city, but you will be able to bundle a cheap flight and hotel if you shop for a steal this month.

The added incentive for late-summer travel to Las Vegas is fewer tourists and fewer conventions. That means more space at the pool and at the major attractions along the Strip. If you plan to travel mid-week (Sunday through Thursday) you can get even deeper discounts. Another option is to book a hotel off the Strip for discounted August pricing and take a shuttle to the main attractions.

Brandenburg Gate

The German capital of Berlin offers an affordable cultural vacation in August. It is one of the cheapest months to travel to the city, when hotel rates can plunge below 100 USD a night, and the weather is still nice enough to enjoy all the outdoor activities. The cheapest time to go to Berlin is between January and April, in the dead of winter, but it is not a good time to experience most of the places that you would want to visit, so August is the next best time to go for your budget.

During your August vacation to Berlin , you will want to take in the cultural sites and the many museums and art galleries like the Brandenburg Gate , Museum Island (Museumsinsel), and the Berlin Wall Memorial . So much of the Berlin experience will be enjoyed by just walking around the city and engaging in the social scene at many of the city's restaurants.

Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios

For one of the cheapest vacation spots in August , Ocho Rios, Jamaica is almost a steal. Pretty much anywhere in Jamaica will have rock-bottom hotel and resort rates this time of year. The reason is because it is just plain hot in Jamaica in August, and most vacationers prefer to visit during the winter months to escape the cold. This works in your favor.

With plenty of flights going in and out of Montego Bay Airport, you will likely find cheap airfares in August, too. Since you will probably spend most of your time at the pool or hitting some of the best beaches in Jamaica , the temperature trade-off for the discounted prices may not be so bad. This is the month you will find that hotels and all-inclusive resorts start sweetening the deals by adding incentives, credits, tours, and more to get your business. You can fill in your agenda with indoor visits to cool off in museums and local restaurants.

Bottom Bay, Barbados

The carefree island of Barbados is a popular Caribbean getaway, but not as much in the summer months as in winter, which means you can get a luxury vacation for about half of what it would cost you in the high tourist season.

There are not as many all-inclusive resorts on this island as in other Caribbean locations, but there are plenty of hotels that slash their rates at this time. This all adds up to make it one of the best cheap places to travel in August.

August is technically hurricane season in Barbados, but this island rarely sees hurricane activity. The most you are likely to experience is a brief downpour in the afternoons. There are still plenty of things to do in Barbados including enjoying stunning beaches, like Bathsheba Beach and Carlisle Bay . For non-beach excursions, Harrison's Cove is always a fun place to visit or a snorkeling trip to see the island's sea turtles and shipwrecks.

Aerial view of Cancun

When there are so many summer destinations to choose from, it is easy to bypass a destination like Cancun in August, but that is when you can get incredible vacation deals, especially with all-inclusive resorts.

Cancun typically sees high tourist numbers in the winter, and spring break months of March and April. Since there are direct flights to Cancun from many destinations, and it is a main stop for a number of low-cost carriers, you can get major airfare discounts to go along with your lodging.

Yes, Cancun gets hot in the summer months, but since the beaches are its main draw, you will be cooled by the ocean breeze and mist. If you feel like leaving your beach chair, hit some of the top tourist attractions in Cancun or visit the Chichén Itza Mayan archaeological site or the Playa Delfines beach, located outside the Hotel Zone, which offers a nice sunny day on the sand.

Aerial view of Key West

If you can stand Florida's summer heat and humidity then you can enjoy your key lime pie as you relax in the hotel room that you scored for about 50 percent off. As the tourists vacate for the summer, this is the best time to get remarkable rates on hotels. The only downside is that you risk hurricane activity.

Exploring Key West and lounging by its lavish pools is a relaxing way to spend a vacation, especially when you alternate time at the beautiful beaches with boat tours, swimming, and snorkeling in the area's clear blue waters. The city has plenty of non-water activities and sites, like the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory ; Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Park; and the free nightly spectacle in Mallory Square called Sunset Celebration, which ushers in the stunning evening sunset.

Quito at sunrise with the Cotopaxi volcano in the distance

Perhaps Ecuador is not on the top of your vacation list, but with Quito being one of the cheapest places to visit in August, maybe it should be. The climate here is consistent throughout the year, so it feels like spring most of the time, even in August. This late summer month is also the dry season in Quito, so you probably won't see any rain.

You can easily find cheap hotels in Quito compared to other South American cities. Some hotels even offer "backpacker rates" if you're okay with just the basics, but even rooms with more amenities are cheap.

Many of the Quito attractions are free, like visiting the Old Town area. There are a number of historic and cultural museums and tours available to take around the region. Even the attractions that require tickets or transportation cost a nominal fee of a few dollars compared to entrance rates to attractions in other cities around the world.

There is never a bad time to visit New York City, and the summer is a super fun time to travel to the Big Apple. While the first two weeks of August are still busy with tourists, things slow down dramatically during the last week, when kids go back to school. It's then that you'll score deep discounts on hotels.

Late August presents a small window of opportunity between the high summer season and the comfortable fall, when tourists will begin to pack the attractions once again. If you plan ahead for this targeted week, you can keep an eye out for discounted direct flights to the city.

Plan on hot temperatures in New York City in August as you check out the many parks and museums but be sure to work in time to enjoy some of the Big Apple's outdoor concerts and plays. Take a stroll through Central Park and visit the iconic Rockefeller Center as you make your way to the observation deck for incredible views of the city. Book some time to visit the Empire State Building and take a boat trip around the Statue of Liberty .

St. Lucia

If you're willing to accept the risks associated with visiting St. Lucia in August, you can save a significant amount of money. At this time of year, in the height of hurricane season, resorts and all-inclusive resorts have steep discounts because attracting tourists is tough.

If the potential for rainfall and storms don't bother you, then you can get a great vacation for a steal and likely additional perks from the resorts like discounted tours. Flights to St. Lucia are not as frequent as the more popular islands, so your best savings happen when you can bundle flights and lodging together.

The upside to visiting St. Lucia in August is that you will be able to experience the local summer festivals that are still in full swing. The best attractions on the island are its many stunning beaches. You can pick a new one each day from the popular Anse Chastanet , Marigot Bay , and Reduit Beach . If you do catch a bad weather day, you can head to the Castries Market for some shopping and indulging in local foods.

Kuala Lumpur

There's no doubt that Malaysia is stifling hot in August but it can be a shockingly cheap vacation when you combine several cost-saving elements. You can book three- and four-star hotels in Kuala Lumpur from 20 to 40 USD a night. There are many hostels and homestays in the city, which can save you even more.

Public transportation around the city is cheap, and you can walk to many of the attractions, depending on where you plan to stay. You may get a few afternoon downpours, but generally August is a bit better for the rainy weather than other times of the year. And you'll welcome the raindrops as a break from the heat.

If the heat gets to be too much, you can stop inside one of the many malls, like the Pavilion , and restaurants that are around the city. You can take a tour of the city center to marvel at the major architecture like the Petronas Twin Towers and the Menara Kuala Lumpur . Kuala Lumpur has almost as many gardens as buildings so there are plenty of sites to fill your agenda.

Diver photographing a stingray

August in the Cayman Islands is part of the rainy season, but you will see the fewest crowds and net the biggest discounts. Hotels and resorts on these west Caribbean islands slash prices up to 50 percent , which may make risking an occasional rain shower worth it.

Grand Cayman has more tourist attractions and amenities, while Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are more remote destinations. All three of the Cayman Islands are natural tropical paradises.

The beaches and water sports are the top attractions in the Cayman Islands . Relax on Seven Mile Beach , one of the best beaches in the Caribbean , take a snorkeling trip out into the open water, or swim with giant stingrays at Stingray City.

Boat excursions are easy to find, like those that go to the Kittiwake Shipwreck just off Grand Cayman. If you are a diver, the Cayman Islands are calling you, and with fewer tourists in August, you can plan a spectacular itinerary of dive sites.

Dusk in Philadelphia with City Hall in the distance

Looking for a cheap U.S. vacation? Philadelphia can scratch that itch with cheap travel prices in late August, as tourists drop off significantly. There are plenty of things to do in the city , from historical sites like Independence Hall , the Liberty Bell , and Rittenhouse Square to the Philadelphia Museum of Art .

Plan your trip for the last week of the month for the best savings. Direct flights are frequent into Philadelphia, so you can watch for airfare alerts and catch deals here, too, when schools are back in session.

Philadelphia is a great walkable city, so you will save on transportation costs getting around to see the local sites. In addition to the many historical sites in the city, you should plan your meals carefully to ensure you try some of the fabulous Philadelphia food. Stop by the Reading Terminal Market inside an 1800s train station to sample local and international foods from more than 80 vendors.

If you have the time and want to cool off, you can hit one of the great beaches near Philadelphia within one to two hours.

Naviglio Grande canal in Milan

In addition to saving up to 62 percent on a hotel room, August presents visitors to Milan with a quieter, more enjoyable city. August is a popular time for Italians to take their summer vacation, which means there will be fewer people bustling about.

While you'll have a few scorching days, the majority of August is a reasonable 25 degrees Fahrenheit, but the humidity might make it feel warmer. The city will be filled with tourists (remember, the locals headed to the beach), but this is the tail end of the high season, and great deals can be had, especially towards the end of the month.

While you're in town, don't miss a trip to the opulent Il Duomo cathedral (it's so grand it's impossible to miss), a viewing of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in the Santa Maria delle Crazi church , and a shopping spree in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

A word of warning. August 15 th is Ferragosto, a national holiday, which will see many of the smaller shops and restaurants closed (some for weeks), except for large chain stores, which stay open.

View over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

August is one of the driest, least humid, and most comfortable months in Rio de Janeiro. It's also the cheapest, especially if you visit during the first week of the month. With savings of up to 56 percent on everything from flights to hotel stays, you'll be able to dole out extra cash for tasty meals and souvenirs.

With temperatures in the mid-70s, you'll be comfortable enough to explore the city's main attractions. It's impossible to miss the giant Cristo Redentor statue perched atop the summit of Corcovado. This can be seen from pretty much everywhere, but the best view is obviously from the top!

Hop on a cable car to enjoy the stellar vistas from Sugarloaf and plan to spend at least one day on the soft, golden sands of Cocpacabana and Ipanema , two of the best beaches in Brazil .

Bangkok, Thailand

If you've always wanted to visit Bangkok, you can find some incredible deals in August. The catch? It's in the rainy season (translation: it's hot and humid) and not the most popular time for tourists. This can work to your advantage.

First, it generally doesn't rain all day, so you can plan your indoor and outdoor activities accordingly. Bangkok has some stunning indoor malls like the MBK Center and the Siam Paragon that have hundreds of stores and indoor attractions, so these make for perfect rainy-day options.

Second, there are fewer tourists in Bangkok in August. This is a plus for seeing the local attractions , which are less crowded, and for the transportation system, which usually means long wait times in traffic jams and packed trains during more popular times of the year.

There is plenty of lodging in Bangkok, so you can snag fantastic deals on luxury hotel rooms, and with more availability in August, it is easy to shop around for the best rates. You will also likely find great deals on flights and package deals that combine transportation and lodging.

The top 10 destinations for travel in August 2024

Beautiful fjord in Norway

Last updated: January 2024

You’ve decided you want to travel more this year (good on you), but you’re struggling to choose your next destination. Surely there’s an easier way than trawling through endless travel mags and guidebooks for the answers, right? That’s where our ultimate month-by-month travel guide comes in: your easily digestible list of places to visit, things to experience, and amazing weather to chase around the world.

Onto August now, and in Europe , things are really hotting up! There are ample active adventures to be had the world over and embarking on a safari is still very much an option. Whether you’ve always wanted to admire the Victoria Falls in Zambia , sip a pint or two of stout in Ireland or make the journey along the fearsome Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea . Here’s your guide on where to travel in August.

1. Slovenia

A group of kayakers in Slovenia

Compared to its widely visited neighbours, Slovenia is a fairly new kid on the European travel block. But people are slowly beginning to realise the pull of this small yet charming nation. From the turquoise waters of Lake Bled to the country’s emerging wine scene, there’s plenty to be enjoyed. Not to mention it’s an active traveller’s paradise with a range of exciting outdoor escapades.

At the height of summer temperatures can soar, making the beguiling Slovene Riviera the perfect spot for relaxing in the sun away from the hordes of tourists peppering Italy and Croatia ’s beaches. You can always hide from the heat by heading to the alpine northwest for a leisurely walk or hike. Alternatively, why not climb aboard a raft on the Soča River for a white-water thrill ride? A super fun way to cool off!

2. Tanzania

This East African gem has so much to offer. Whether you’re intrigued by fascinating local cultures, pristine white sand beaches, extraordinary natural landscapes or incredible wildlife, you’ll find it all (and so much more) in Tanzania . Get ready to head off on a safari around the Ngorongoro Crater in search of rare black rhinos, or shop for indigenous wares at Mwigobero Market on the edge of Lake Victoria.

August brings about the best time for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro , Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest free-standing volcano in the world. There are several different routes to the summit, and these vary considerably in terms of ease and price. Here at Intrepid, we offer hikers the Marangu Route (the only trail with hut accommodation), Machame Route (the most popular) and Rongai Route (the easiest). Which will you choose?

3. Argentina

Views of Iguazu Falls from the Argentinian side

When many of us think of Argentina, our minds drift to thoughts of the buzzing capital, Buenos Aires — home to the astonishing Recoleta Cemetery, the brightly coloured district of La Boca, the space-age Puente de la Mujer footbridge and an abundance of top-notch eateries. Not forgetting it’s the home of tango too. Buenos Aires celebrates this sensuous dance style with a festival all of its own over two weeks in August.

There’s more to this South American favourite than its cities though. What about Mendoza’s vineyards, Patagonia’s glaciers and the remarkable Iguazu Falls? Despite being a drier month, these waterfalls are still impressive. Lower water levels lead rock faces to peek through the flow, making them appear even more spectacular. Be sure to spend two days at this world wonder, including one on the contrasting Brazilian side.

4. Malaysia

Hill views over the Kokoda Track, Papua New Guinea

From Chinese to Indonesian, Thai to Indian, Malaysia is a melting pot of different cultural influences. And its multi-ethnic makeup is part of what makes it such a fascinating place to visit. For instance, you could be soaking up Hindu history at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, before marvelling at the modern architecture of the national mosque and then dining on dumplings in Chinatown.

Throughout August the weather in Malaysia is mixed, with tropical downpours not uncommon. But the east coast is gifted with long sunny days that offer flawless diving and snorkelling conditions. Hari Merdeka, Malaysian Independence Day, is celebrated on the 31 st and gives you the chance to party with the locals. Towns and cities are decorated with flags and a big parade is held in front of the king in Kuala Lumpur.

View over Slea Head in Kerry, Ireland

Rolf G Wackenberg/Shutterstock

Ah, the Emerald Isle, a place of astounding natural beauty, ice-cold pints of stout, intriguing history and toe-tapping music. Known for its unreliable weather, the peak of Irish summer is the ideal time to visit this often wet and windy destination. Get ready to while away the hours on walks along miles of deserted sandy coastline and fill your lungs with that fresh country air.

If you’re a bit of a Star Wars buff, then a visit to Kerry is a must. Its craggy cliffs, secluded bays and the spooky Skellig Islands form the backdrop of the world-famous franchise’s most recent episodes. Be sure to make the trip around Slea Head too for amazing views back over the peninsula, keeping an eye out for the ancient beehive huts. A drive over the Connor Pass also provides epic vistas that are able to rival those found in New Zealand.

  • 8-day Northern & Southern Ireland

Crocodiles, elephants and leopards – oh my! Animal lovers will adore exploring Zambia’s national parks, including the South Luangwa Reserve where the river is overcrowded by humongous hippos. August marks the middle of the dry season here, bringing with it warm days, clear skies and cooler nights. Making it a brilliant time for viewing game before the daytime temperatures become too hot to bear.

Aside from the awe-inspiring wildlife in Zambia, you’ll also find the incredible Victoria Falls, called Mother Nature’s ‘Smoke that Thunders’ by some, because its spray can be seen from more than 30 miles away. Whilst the falls frequently steal the show, there’s even more to be enjoyed in this part of Africa, from browsing markets for handcrafted keepsakes to meeting isolated communities spreading centuries worth of traditional wisdom.

Getting back to nature tops the itinerary when it comes to spending summer in Norway, and its ever-changing landscape is a serious sight to behold. Remote islands, deep fjords, rugged coastline, soaring mountains, glinting glaciers, the Northern Lights – the list goes on. Plus, you’ll have the chance to try out all manner of al fresco activities, from out-of-this-world hiking to hair-raising rafting.

Admittedly visiting Norway in August can err a little on the pricey side, but it’s definitely worth the investment as it happens to be the best time to visit the Western Fjords. These sea-flooded valleys are blue-hued and fringed by steep cliffs, making them one of the most picturesque destinations on the planet. You can also go camping and take in the scenery on a hike along one of the many marked trails.

8. Papua New Guinea

Hill views over the Kokoda Track, Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea’s dry season runs from June to September, when the country experiences warm days and relatively low rainfall. It’s a fantastic time to visit if you’re interested in hiking the Kokoda Track. The trail is drenched in history, as it was once the site of a gory World War II battle between Japan and the Allies. Be warned though: choosing to accept the Kokoda challenge is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Spanning a massive 96 kilometres, the Kokoda Track is a single-file walking route buried deep in the steamy jungle. You’ll follow in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought over Port Moresby, learning amazing tales of bravery as you go. You’ll come across stirring mountainside memorials and meet the friendly-faced locals living in far-flung villages that pop up along the way. Prepare to push your own physical and mental boundaries to the limit!

Tibetan opera performance in Lhasa, Tibet

Lian Deng/Shutterstock

Lots of travellers come to Tibet for a taste of its intense spirituality, explore cliffside Buddhist temples, witness chanting monks and bask in the tranquillity of its many magnificent monasteries. It also boasts Everest views, the opportunity for numerous high-altitude treks and the world’s highest railway on the route to Lhasa.

August is a time of celebrations in Tibet, including the Nagchu Horse Racing Festival held in the country’s northern grasslands. It’s here you’ll see traditionally dressed locals pitching their tents by the track, bartering, singing and dancing. Another is the Shoton Festival (or sour milk banquet), which commemorates the end of the monk’s meditation season. People gather to eat specially cultivated yoghurt, watch local opera performances and engage in other religious activities.

Hot air balloons over Cappadocia, Turkey

You might think, given the heat, that the suggestion of travelling to Turkey in August is a slightly stupid one. But, it’s a brilliant time to take in the sights of Cappadocia and Istanbul, whilst the tourists choose to flock to the country’s many coastal resorts. If you fancy a few days of R&R by the sea, Kas is a great place to explore. Its crystal-clear waters make for dreamy snorkelling and you can even kayak over its ancient sunken city!

People will tell you there’s nothing quite like the alien landscapes of Cappadocia and they’d be right. Spend your time ambling through underground cities and admiring its fairy chimneys from above on a sunrise balloon ride, before swapping calm for chaos on an exploration of the country’s capital, Istanbul. 21 Cheap destinations in 2023 with great weather in August

Summer of 2023 has been busy in all of the most popular places including Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia’s major tourist cities. Hotel prices are mostly higher than even last year and airfares are higher still. Fortunately there are still some good bargains available for those who are savvy enough to shop around. The list below provides 20 suggestions of places that are sunny and still fairly cheap in August of 2023.

Many people don’t realize that the Caribbean and Mexican resort areas have fantastic weather in summer with usually only a bit of rainfall a few days a week. You can get good deals as well, although many places are pretty crowded with European visitors who have the whole month off and know a good deal when they see it. Check the South America and Asia parts of the list below for some shocking hotel rates. Also, if you can move your trip up by a few weeks you could have some other great choices as seen on our list of cheap destinations with great July weather .

Looking to avoid the heat? Check out our  best cool destinations to escape the heat . One suggestion that we have borrowed from that list is an Alaska cruise. August is peak season for Alaska cruises because it’s one of the warmest months, which means it’s still fairly chilly. If you are sick of being hot all the time then an Alaska cruise could be a great option to cool off a bit and still be in really nice weather with some of the world’s best scenery.

Important August 2023 holidays

  • August 12 – Queen’s Birthday Holiday in Thailand (major public holiday)
  • August 15 – National Liberation Day of Korea (major public holiday)
  • August 15 – India Independence Day (major public holiday)
  • August 15 – Assumption Day in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain etc. (major public holiday)
  • August 28 – Summer bank holiday in the UK (except Scotland, which is on August 7)

It’s also worth noting that huge numbers of Europeans have all of August off work, and they generally leave the cities and head to the beaches and countrysides.

The Americas

August is an interesting month for vacations since most of America and Canada are off school for the month, but increasing numbers start back later in the month so the first half of August is far busier and more expensive than the second half. In other words, if you can take your vacation in the last week of the month, you’ll find much better deals and smaller crowds.

  • Cenotes – Semi-enclosed sea caves that are unique to this area

travel deals august

You’ll be seeing an influx of European tourists in August who know that Cancun offers good deals this time of year, but it’s still much slower than it is in the winter months, and this huge area is built with enough hotels for peak season. The Cancun Airport has cheap direct flights from all over, and the airport also serves Playa del Carmen and the nearby island of Cozumel just to the south. All-inclusive resorts can also be great value in August. The area is large and has many different types of accommodation available so we wrote a guide to where to stay in the Cancun area to match your style .

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

  • August avg high: 89°F/32°C
  • August avg precip: 1.1″/2.8cm

Punta Cana highlights

  • Abundant all-inclusive beach resorts at surprisingly affordable rates
  • A large and efficient airport and new roads to get you in safely
  • White, sandy beaches at nearly every resort
  • Fishing, sailing, water sports, and other adventure excursions available
  • Family-friendly resorts with water parks etc. are plentiful

travel deals august

The best news is that Punta Cana can be very cheap in August, even for many of the higher-end resorts and the all-inclusives. They build enough of them so that they are mostly full in January, which means that they have to fiercely compete in low season months like this. There are great water sports opportunities as well, although you won’t be seeing much in the way of authentic culture in a resort compound like this. Honestly, there isn’t much culture in the Punta Cana area outside of the hotels, so it’s really not worth staying in a small hotel and trying to tour the area. The all-inclusive hotels offer such great deals that they are often even cheaper than places that only include breakfast. We recently wrote a guide to the best all-inclusive hotels in Punta Cana , which should give you a head start to finding the best place.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$54 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$188 per night for two people

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

  • August avg high: 91°F/33°C
  • August avg low: 78°F/26°C

Ocho Rios highlights

  • Jamaica has a distinct cuisine and beachy drinks
  • Great sandy beaches at most larger coastal resorts
  • Cruise-ship-oriented shopping opportunities in town
  • Music and nightlife for those interested in leaving the resorts
  • The only large (and cheapest) Caribbean island where locals speak English

travel deals august

And again, the hotel deals in the resort area of Jamaica are quite amazing in August when many people incorrectly assume it’s way too hot. Even the all-inclusive resorts here pull out the stops with deals that sometimes look like misprints because rates are so low. If you want to tour museums and cathedrals, go elsewhere, but if you want to relax on the beach with great food and cheap drinks, it’s hard to beat Ocho Rios this time of year.

Jamaica has great resorts all along the northern and western coasts of the island, all served by the busy Montego Bay Airport. They have a couple entries on our list of the best Caribbean resorts for honeymoons , so if you are planning a romantic trip, this list should help.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$83 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$223 per night for two people

Alaska Cruise

  • August avg high: 64F/17C
  • August avg low: 49F/10C
  • August avg precip: 3.2″/8.3cm

The data above is for Anchorage, Alaska

Alaska cruise highlights

  • A cruise is by far the best way to experience the beauty of Alaska
  • The Inner Passage is a huge highlight on most cruises
  • A chance to get away from scorching summer temperatures for a week
  • Pack and unpack once and see 3 to 5 towns in a week
  • Excellent and abundant food all included in the price

travel deals august

Nearly everyone agrees that a cruise is by far the best way to see Alaska since the western coastline is one of the world’s most beautiful areas, and you can only see a tiny fraction of the scenery if you actually fly to Anchorage and try to tour around on your own. Alaska cruises in August aren’t cheap compared to Caribbean cruises, but considering all you get (accommodation and all meals and entertainment) for a week, it’s still a pretty good deal in high season.

Mexico City, Mexico

  • Modern culture and shopping districts that much nicer than most expect
  • Excellent local food at affordable prices
  • Pyramids and other nearby Aztec ruins that are easy to reach by bus or taxi
  • Very affordable hotels at very good standards

If you expected Mexico City to be one of the hottest places to go in August, you’d be wrong, as it’s actually rather mild. Better still, Mexico City is easily one of the cultural capitals of the Americas and it’s far nicer than you probably assume, and still surprisingly cheap all things considered as well.

Cartagena, Colombia

  • August avg high: 87°F/31°C
  • August avg low: 79°F/26°C
  • August avg precip: 4.7″/11.8cm

Cartagena highlights

  • Historic walled city that rivals Old San Juan for beauty
  • Pleasant beaches and other nearby sights all close by
  • Great local food and drinks at amazing prices
  • A different atmosphere that is unlike the large Caribbean islands
  • Nearby islands and abundant water sports

travel deals august

This city also has an advantage of offering long stretches of very nice beaches near the center, plus a charming Colonial walled city in the middle of it all. With both options available it’s easy to take advantage of the sunny days on the beach and still get a bit of culture in when it’s cloudy and looks like rain is on the way. Once you get here, you’ll find that hotels, restaurants, and attractions are excellent value. In other words, if you want a Caribbean beach vacation on a lower budget, Cartagena is a cheap and very interesting option with lots to see and do.

Quito, Ecuador

  • August avg high: 67°F/19°C
  • August avg low: 49°F/9°C
  • August avg precip: 1.0″/2.5cm

Quito highlights

  • Gorgeous colonial architecture
  • A mild climate all year round
  • Cloud forest nearby
  • Quito Basilica is one of the most interesting churches in the Americas
  • TelefériQo cable car ride

travel deals august

If Quito were easier to reach it would be far more popular, but as it is this is not a city that people arrive in accidentally. This helps contribute to the fact that things are extremely cheap by international standards, so it’s not a bad place to just hang around in if you can manage it. In fact, this is one of the cheapest cities in the Americas and always ranks near the top of the cheapest tourist cities in the world on our annual list. Quito is one of the world’s cheapest places to travel in August, and every other month of the year for that matter.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • August avg high: 81°F/27°C
  • August avg low: 64°F/18°C
  • August avg precip: 1.6″/4.0cm

Rio de Janeiro highlights

  • Copacabana and Ipanema beach areas are more impressive than you’d expect
  • Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf cable car are very worthwhile
  • Famous beach culture where locals far outnumber tourists even in tourist season
  • Great food and drink culture at very affordable prices
  • Surprisingly inexpensive hotels in the nicer beach areas

travel deals august

Prices in Brazil have gone up and down with currency shifts in the last decade or so, and as of 2023 it’s quite cheap again. International hotels on the beach are still on the pricey side, but family-run hotels a block or two away can be excellent value. On the other hand, Brazil has never been one of the safest countries to visit, so it’s important to do your research and remain careful, just as you would in most other huge cities around the world.

As mentioned on top, August in Europe is like shopping malls just before Christmas. There’s plenty of great weather in the north, but extremely high prices to go along with it, so we are staying in the south for the most part. In fact, if you are pretty sure you want to go to Europe in August you might have a look at our list of the best European cities for August from cheapest to most expensive .

Even though August is peak season for sunshine holidays, you can still find cheap Europe beach destinations if that’s your goal.

Lisbon, Portugal

  • August avg high: 82°F/28°C
  • August avg low: 65°F/18°C
  • August avg precip: 0.3″/0.8cm

Lisbon highlights

  • Castles, towers, and cathedrals, all in the compact city center
  • Tram 28, which connects many of Lisbon’s tourist sights for €3 a ride
  • Elevador de Santa Justa – the famous outdoor elevator for amazing photos
  • Great local food at very good prices
  • Fado (local folk music) shows to go along with great meals

travel deals august

Not only does Lisbon have arguably Europe’s finest big-city climate, it’s also strangely cheap compared even to nearby neighbors such as Barcelona or Madrid. Its out-of-the-way location means that no one gets here by accident, so tourist numbers are never out of hand and prices are appealing considering how lovely it all is. Portugal has become kind of a trendy destination as of 2023 and many people combine a few days in Lisbon with a few days or more on one of the southern beaches in the Algarve region.

  • 3-star hotels from: €51 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: €88 per night for two people

Barcelona, Spain

  • August avg low: 67°F/19°C
  • August avg precip: 2.4″/6.0cm

Barcelona highlights

  • Sagrada Familia cathedral and other Gaudi architectural highlights
  • La Rambla pedestrian zone is fun and interesting all day and night
  • Sandy beaches are located within the city
  • Marina complex in the city center with great food, shopping, and activities
  • Nightlife is among Europe’s best

travel deals august

Booking as early as possible is your best bet for a city like this. Even the hostels will be jammed during August so arriving with no reservations and going door to door could be problematic and exhausting. At least food and drink prices are reasonable, even in summer, so once you have a bed sorted out it’s easy to keep your budget down otherwise. The public transportation system in Barcelona is quite good so you can stay a bit away from the tourist districts and still see a lot while saving some money.

  • 3-star hotels from: €69 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: €89 per night for two people

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

  • August avg high: 84°F/29°C
  • August avg low: 71°F/22°C
  • August avg precip: 0.0″/0.5cm

Tenerife highlights

  • Sandy beaches and almost every hotel has a nice pool
  • A pleasant atmosphere with surprisingly affordable food and drinks
  • Interesting and low-key nightlife with no giant nightclubs
  • Teide volcano and national park is a good day trip
  • Easy for English speakers getting out of the cold weather

travel deals august

This and the rest of the Canary Islands are very popular with Europeans all summer, and August is one of the peak months. Fortunately, the island is packed with hotels and rentals and affordable restaurants, but it’s still best to book as early as possible in order to get the best deals. It’s worth checking other Canary Islands for the best deals since the weather and vibe are similar on all of them. Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote are the others with the most hotels and easiest to reach.

  • 3-star hotels from: €38 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: €67 per night for two people

Budapest, Hungary

  • August avg high: 79°F/26°C
  • August avg low: 59°F/15°C
  • August avg precip: 1.9″/4.8cm

Budapest highlights

  • Parliament building on the river is one of Europe’s most famous buildings
  • Some of Europe’s best architecture fitting of an important capital
  • Very affordable food and drinks (outside of the main tourist zone)
  • Natural hot spring complexes right in the city that are easy and cheap to visit
  • “Ruin pubs” set in courtyards of old apartment buildings (an unusual treat)

travel deals august

Prices for hotels do tend to be at their highest during August, but hostel prices tend to stay steady through the middle of the year so it might be worth trying to book a private room in a hostel if you can do so early enough. It’s still much cheaper in Budapest than any large city to its west.

  • 4-star hotels from: €63 per night for two people

Prague, Czechia

  • August avg high: 76°F/24°C
  • August avg low: 57°F/14°C
  • August avg precip: 2.8″/7.0cm

Prague highlights

  • Prague Castle complex that is close and easy to visit
  • Charles Bridge and Old Town Square for amazing photos
  • Eastern Europe’s most interesting architecture that survived WWII
  • Hearty food at very appealing prices (outside of tourist zones)
  • Arguably the world’s best beer that is also very cheap in most places

travel deals august

Hotels in Prague do charge quite a bit in August, but hostels can be good bargains still, especially the ones a bit away from the tourist zone. Booking well in advance is wise for August. At least you’ll have the cheap and excellent beer waiting for you through the frustrations.

  • 3-star hotels from: €43 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: €46 per night for two people

Split, Croatia

  • August avg high: 85°F/30°C
  • August avg precip: 1.7″/4.3cm

Split highlights

  • Stunning white-marble historic center dating back over 1,000 years
  • Beautiful port area with ferries going to nearby islands
  • Diocletian’s Palace and other worthwhile nearby sights
  • Pleasant seaside summer weather with welcome breezes
  • Much cheaper than nearby Italy or even Dubrovnik

travel deals august

As in all of Croatia, apartments are more plentiful and better value than hotels. August is the peak month along the Croatian coast as Germans and other northern Europeans move in for the entire month. Fortunately, the tourist infrastructure is well developed so you’ll be able to find a place and get around as long as you plan at least a little in advance.

  • 3-star hotels from: €62 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: €92 per night for two people

Krakow, Poland

  • August avg high: 75°F/24°C
  • August avg precip: 3.2″/8.0cm

Krakow highlights

  • Gorgeous old town zone surrounded by a lovely park (very unique)
  • Wawel Castle complex is in the center and easy to visit
  • Great food and hotels that can be amazingly cheap for Europe
  • Lively nightlife and culture with fun weekend crowds
  • The easy day trip to Auschwitz is unforgettable

travel deals august

Krakow is easily one of the best bargains in Europe, with accommodation, attraction, food, and drink prices being near the bottom of the pack for the continent, in spite of the charming city center and welcome reception visitors receive. The city is also very popular among stag and hen parties lately, so if you are a light sleeper it might be worth staying a bit outside of the center. You won’t want to spend more than 3 or so days in Krakow, so fortunately it’s relatively easy to reach Prague, Budapest, or Vienna on the train from here.

Istanbul, Turkey

  • August avg high: 83°F/28°C
  • August avg low: 66°F/19°C
  • August avg precip: 0.9″/2.3cm

Istanbul highlights

  • Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque are both amazing and next to each other
  • Grand Bazaar and other shopping is some of Europe’s most interesting
  • Topkapi Palace is close and very worthwhile
  • Great food at great prices (amazing hotel breakfasts)
  • Bargain hotels in prime tourist district area

travel deals august

If you haven’t followed the news, Turkey has been a bit unstable in the years leading up to 2023, but none of this has affected tourists yet. The good news is that the currency has dropped a lot and now almost everything is amazingly cheap for visitors. The crowds are down a bit as well, even though more Russians are doing holidays here since the war began in Ukraine.

We only cover a handful of cities in Africa, and none of those could make this list for August. It’s still too cold down in South Africa, and it’s blazing hot in Morocco and Egypt. Check back in September for some possibilities here.

Middle East

Much of the Middle East is crazy hot during August, and even those places can get crowded this month, but there are still a few good choices to consider.

Beirut, Lebanon

  • August avg high: 85°F/29°C
  • August avg low: 75°F/24°C
  • August avg precip: 0.0″/0.0cm

travel deals august

For those not following the news, Lebanon has had some real struggles over the last few years and I would normally recommend that visitors wait until things calm down more again, but I recently received some communications from their tourism bureau assuring me that the country is open and welcoming of tourists, so who knows?

Tel Aviv, Israel

  • August avg high: 86°F/30°C

Tel Aviv highlights

  • Great Mediterranean beaches in the city
  • Modern city with interesting history
  • Perfect base to visit Jerusalem and Dead Sea etc.
  • Very good nightlife for the region
  • Excellent museums and shopping

travel deals august

At least food here is quite cheap as long as you eat at the same casual places that the locals flock to all day and all night. Drinks do tend to be very expensive here, so Tel Aviv is not an ideal place for cheapskate drunks.

22 Cheap Destinations with Great Weather in July

25 Cheap Destinations with Great Weather in September

Asia is usually the king of cheap destinations with great weather for most of the year, but August is still in the middle of the rainy season for most of the tropical cities, as well as for Beijing and Hong Kong. Those who like to take their chances could actually have a great and cheap trip by going almost anywhere in Southeast Asia. It’s a bit cooler than in April and May, and most of the rainfall comes suddenly, plus it’s usually easy to get out of the way.

>>>See also: 8 Best Asia destinations in August

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia

  • August avg low: 76°F/24°C

Bali highlights

  • Great beaches and surfing in many areas all around the island
  • Amazing temples and monuments that are abundant and easy to reach
  • Shockingly cheap hotels, with fairly cheap food and drinks
  • Fascinating Hindu culture and music
  • Excellent resorts in secluded areas including Nusa Dua

travel deals august

Bali is trying to bounce back after being shut down for almost two years during the pandemic, so hotel prices can seem shockingly low. While it’s true that you can get a 3-star room for under US$20 per night in August, it’s probably worth getting a much nicer place closer to US$50 per night because many of those places are legit resorts. We use the busy Kuta Beach area for our price index even though it’s not the best choice for many visitors. It’s probably best to avoid staying in the nightlife and shopping-packed Kuta Beach area, at least if you are hoping to relax during your stay.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$14 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$23 per night for two people

Nha Trang, Vietnam

  • August avg precip: 2.1″/5.3cm

Nha Trang highlights

  • Great beaches for a city in Vietnam
  • Long Son Pagoda
  • Monkey Island (a bit controversial)
  • Very cheap hotels and food
  • Great mix of traditional Vietnamese food and international favorites

travel deals august

Nha Trang is very popular with Australians and some others from around Asia, as it provides a rare sunny beach this time of year in the region. It’s incredibly cheap and quite tourist friendly, but the cultural offerings in the town are relatively weak so it’s hard to justify coming in from a very long distance just to sit on its beaches. The hotel prices are so low that they look like misprints even though they aren’t. Hotels in this region often charge low rates to fill up and then make more by booking tours and excursions to guests. It’s worth paying a bit more for a place with a lot of positive reviews, but you can still get an insane deal in this city in August.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$10 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$14 per night for two people

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • August avg high: 90°F/32°C
  • August avg low: 74°F/23°C
  • August avg precip: 6.1″/15.3cm

Kuala Lumpur highlights

  • Interesting mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures
  • Very modern business district with lively and great shopping
  • Amazingly cheap 4-star hotels for a large Asian city
  • Excellent food at surprisingly good prices
  • Nearby temples and important sights that are easy to reach

travel deals august

Kuala Lumpur might not be an obvious destination during summer months, but again, it’s hot here every day of the year and the place is well adapted for it. You can travel through large parts of the downtown area through malls or elevated and air-conditioned walkways, so even when they get the rainstorms you will be comfortable and dry. Hotel prices in August can seem suspiciously low, at least on weekdays, but for the most part they are real. Most of the cheapest rooms in KL are those without windows, so for most people it’s best to be cautious of that and be sure to book something with at least one exterior window.

  • 3-star hotels from: US$24 per night for two people
  • 4-star hotels from: US$27 per night for two people

Can you push your trip back a month? It could be worth it

Most people know that August is the peak travel month in most of the world, especially in Europe where so many millions of people get the entire month off. Partly for that reason, if you can do your own trip in September you’ll usually be rewarded by smaller crowds, lower prices, and almost the exact same weather. Have a look at our list of cheap destinations with great weather in September for the best choices.

If these are mean to be cheapdestinations whyis Tel Aviv featured?

As you say yourself

‘but this one is quite a bit more expensive’

I would also disagree that ‘It’s reasonably priced compared to summer resort cities in Europe’ – If you take Faro or Lisbon for example.

Thank you for your feedback. As you’ve seen, some people are critical if it’s ON the list, and other people are critical if it isn’t. The point of this list is to give people ideas of places that are reasonably affordable once you are there. -Roger

Dear Sir/Madam,

To whom may concern, could you please change the Tenirefe picture? That picture is from Gran Canaria a different Island in Canary Islands. The picture City name is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Ir is the Capital of the Gran Canaria Island as it’s the capital of Canary Islands. Please change that picture.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I assume you are trying to be helpful and I appreciate that, but if you are referring to the photo of Tenerife on this page it’s of Playa de la Americas taken from Los Cristianos and I’m sure of that because I took it myself during my four-week stay there a couple years ago. I’ve not yet made it to Gran Canaria. If you are referring to the photo on the main Tenerife page it’s of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and you can tell by the Auditorio de Tenerife on the far left. But now that you mention it I think I will change that photo to a beach shot because that’s what brings most people to the Canaries. -Roger

What to know for booking summer travel: Expert tips on airfare, destinations and more

Where to score flight deals during the prime summer travel season.

As the surge of summer travel draws near, the race to book a great vacation is on.

"If you're looking to travel domestically within the U.S., I think you should be booking now for summer travel," Clint Henderson, travel expert and managing editor of The Points Guy, told "GMA."

Earlier this month while reporting quarterly earnings, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian projected "record advance bookings for the summer," telling CNBC that the carrier's credit card data and bookings show customers are highly interested in air travel.

An increase in budget airline routes that has created more competition, paired with an easing of the post-pandemic revenge travel surge, means travelers could see more deals.

"Overall prices are down from where they were when we just had that boom out of the pandemic," Henderson said. "So things are more reasonable."

Hopper, the flight booking app, has shown predicted fares for flights to Europe will be down 10% in price from the same time last year.

Google recently announced its top 20 trending summer destinations , which saw a few newcomers on the list and Paris rose to the No. 2 spot.

With the Olympics taking place there from July 26 through Aug. 11, an uptick in airfare and hotel pricing is expected during the Games.

But those willing to wait out the Olympics could find big savings for flights to the host nation.

The Points Guy has featured deals from Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte to Paris for as low as $515 from August through the fall.

Amsterdam, Prague, Spain and Iceland are among the most reasonably priced European destinations, as seen on Hopper.

Tips for booking summer travel

Don't forget to stay flexible with travel dates and keep midweek in mind for possibly lower fares.

There's also a time during the post-summer rush known as "shoulder season," between September and October, when fares could drop by as much as 30%.

When it comes to airfare purchase timing, the experts at The Points Guy have found prices dip eight to four weeks before the outbound flight, but after the one-month mark, prices will creep back up.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

travel deals august

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

travel deals august

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

travel deals august

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

travel deals august

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

travel deals august

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

travel deals august

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

travel deals august

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Relax by the pool, attend shows, dine with new friends and more on your next solo cruise.

Whether you're embarking on your first cruise alone or you've been on solo cruises before, single travelers will find more options than ever when it comes to cruising solo. Many cruise lines offer single staterooms with the same amenities as other cabins, at a price similar to what you'd pay with double occupancy fares. You'll also find special promotions where the single supplement fee is reduced or waived, making it more affordable to reserve a spacious stateroom or luxurious suite with even more amenities – including personalized butler service, an added perk of booking with many luxury lines .

If you're ready for a maritime adventure, an extended vacation or simply a quick getaway from home, these top cruise lines offer some of the best options for solo travelers on waterways around the world.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

  • The Moscow Kremlin: This is the best place known for the Kremlins (Russian citadels), a fortified complex in the center of Moscow. It includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosed Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. In addition, within the complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace, formerly the Russian emperor's residence in Moscow. The complex is now the official residence of the Russian president. It also features a museum with over three million visitors every year. It overlooks the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and Alexander Garden to the west.
  • Red Square: It is next to the Kremlin, which has an east wall, and the famous Pokrovski Cathedral (Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed), which is one of the most beautiful monuments of age-old Russian architecture built in 1555–1560, symbolizing the victory of Ivan the Terrible over the Kazan Khanate. It has magnificent domes apart from paintings inside and outside the cathedral. Red Square is one of the oldest and largest squares in Moscow, which is the site of official military parades and demonstrations intended to display the strength of Soviet armed forces.
  • Baikal Lake: Lake Baikal is extensive and diverse so that everyone can put it on the itinerary for a perfect holiday here. From just sitting on its shore to hiking up Chersky Mountain, it offers leisure and adventure. The area surrounding Baikal is unique, and many of the flora and fauna exist only in this area. The lake is filled with rich marine life like Baikal Seals, 50 species of fish, 25 species of gobies, and over 320 bird species. This lake is protected under the Lake Baikal Coastal Protection Zone and is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • The State Tretyakov Gallery: It is an art gallery in Moscow, considered the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world. It was built in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired artworks by Russian artists to create a collection that might later grow into a national art museum.
  • Sochi: Sochi is known as a city and resort area of Krasnodar Kray (territory), in the southwestern region of Russia. The city shares a border with the Black Sea coast at the foot of the western part of the main Caucasus Mountain range. The presence of mineral springs, beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, long beaches, and a pleasantly warm climate has made Sochi a large and popular holiday destination and a health resort for vacationers. Sochi has dozens of hotels, tourist centers, campsites, and over 50 sanatoriums. The streets of the city and gardens are filled with exotic subtropical trees and shrubs.
  • Lighthouse Egersheld: Established in 1876, Lighthouse Egersheld is one of the oldest lighthouses in Russia. It is located on an artificial stony spit from Tokarevsky Cape - the so-called Tokarevskaya Koshka. Tourists can visit the first one from the Tokarevsky Cape to the lighthouse by car. Another part of the spit, leaving into the sea, is called the "cat's tail,” which one can reach during the low tide.

This attraction was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2004.

Round-trip hotel transport is also provided at most of the hotels, and you can also sightsee multiple attractions on this tour. Summer is the best time when you can enjoy this tour on a boat.
  • Go to the skiing valley: Skiing is one of the must-do activities on Mount Elbrus. You can ski at the Red Valley, a mini paradise for those who enjoy adventures. The steep slopes, high altitude, well-maintained pistes, fast and convenient lifts, and quality service make it full of challenges and thrills. So, if you are thirsty for an adventure, doing this activity in Russia is breathtaking.
  • Explore Samara Embankment: It is a 5 km long well-paved walking path on the Volga River's left bank. One can enjoy a sunny day with family and friends in the summer. It begins from Lesnaya Street and Samara River Port, which provides great opportunities for clicking photos to get a fond memory of beautiful and classical structures as impressive backdrops. Relieve yourself from all the worldly stress and tension by taking a stroll, hopping on a boat cruise on the Volga, or enjoying the beach.
  • Visit Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre: This is meant for those who enjoy music and dance. It is one of the largest music theaters presented in Russia, and it offers an insight into Russian culture through musical folklore. They have mind-boggling and fabulous decorations and impressive stages. Not just that. Fine actors/actresses, dazzling costumes, and great themes are all something you can use to entertain yourself in Russia.
  • Go on a hiking trail: If you go to a mountainous region, witnessing sunsets or sunrises is a given. And many recreational activities are also offered on many hiking trails, including Mount Elbrus, Northern Urals and near the cliff on the banks of River Ballikal.
  • Surprise your tastebuds with Russian cuisine: One must try some lip-smacking and mouth-watering dishes while in Russia. These include Blini, Russian pancakes traditionally made round but thin and fresh to eat when hot. It is also called French crêpes, which are sweet and served with sour cream, salmon, caviar, or mushrooms. There’s also Beef Stroganoff, a delicacy that is a mixture of sautéed beef served in a delicious sauce with smetana (sour cream). You can also try other famous dishes like Okroshka and Pirozhki.
  • Experience the vibrant nightlife: As the heat is defeated by the sun's setting, the night takes on Russia and people enjoy their time at clubs, casinos, and pubs. • Check out the psychedelic salt mines: There’s your typical salt mine and then there’s the psychedelic salt mine - a unique mine made hundreds of years ago. It lies below Yekaterinburg City, an abandoned Psychedelic Salt Mine replete with a natural wonder of colored patterned walls. It is the most captivating site and the beauty of the mine leaves you dazzled. This is one of the most fascinating things to explore in Russia. It contains layers of carnallite, creating swirls of colors on the tunnel walls, making technicolor masterpieces throughout the rocks. The color spectrum varies from yellow, white, and reddish to blue and even completely colorless.
  • Go ice skating at Gorky Park: This activity that most young generations enjoy is Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park, which is meant for ice skating. The 50 Best Luggage Deals We’ve Seen This Month — Samsonite, Travelpro, and More Are Up to 62% Off

April isn't just for showers — it's for massive luggage markdowns, too.

If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of travel, whether you’re visiting an exciting new destination or rediscovering an old favorite. And there’s just something appealing about buying luggage. For me, it’s picturing that shiny, new hardside bag as it winds its way around the carousel at baggage claim before a much-anticipated vacation. But, luggage can get expensive, especially if you’re investing in quality bags that will be with you for many trips.

Fortunately, this month is chock full of deals from beloved brands like Samsonite and Travelpro, as well as go-to retailers like Amazon and Macy’s. Don't believe me? Well, there's the Samsonite’s carry-on spinner and Travelpro’s underseat carry-on that are both a generous 25 percent off right now, for starters.
