Live updates as travelers head to Newark Airport for Thanksgiving trips

It's one of the busiest travel days in the most hectic travel season of the year.

Tuesday figures to be a busy day for Thanksgiving travel with much of it taking place at Newark Liberty International Airport.

We'll be at the airport for the day to give you updates on travel conditions and hear from the people hustling through the gates to reach their holiday destinations. Here's the latest from Newark!

Wednesday travel conditions at Newark Airport

Tuesday travel went pretty smoothly at Newark Airport and at least in the early going, Wednesday appears to be following suit. There have only been two cancellations in the last 24 hours as of 7:45 a.m.

The rain that fell Tuesday night also stopped by Wednesday morning, removing one more obstacle.

Wednesday weather at Newark Airport

Tuesday was a relatively calm day at Newark Airport and hopes to remain that way Wednesday, but the National Weather Service is predicting heavy rains into the evening so be on the lookout for potential flight delays.

Winds gusts could reach up to 41 mph. Precipitation is at 100% for Tuesday evening. Significantly less rain is on the forecast for Wednesday, with about a 60% chance of participation in the morning. Reports predict 1 to 2 inches of rain for Tuesday evening and between a quarter and a half of an inch on Wednesday morning. A relatively busy day is ahead as United plans for a three percent increase in demand for travel compared to last year's Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Flight cancellations and delays at Newark Airport

It's a relatively smooth start for the early travelers Tuesday morning. As of 3:30 p.m., the flight tracking website FlightAware shows five cancellations in the last 24 hours at Newark. As of 10 p.m., there was only one cancellation in the prior 24 hours.

A quiet afternoon at Newark Airport

Some may think traveling during the holiday season could be chaotic with people cramped all over the airport waiting for their relatives to arrive after several delays. But at Newark Tuesday morning and early afternoon the atmosphere was the complete opposite.

The airport's baggage claim area was almost empty (you might expect a tumbleweed to pass by in the eerie silence). Many passengers said they wanted to catch early flights to avoid the hassle that might come later in the afternoon or evening. They seem to have made the right decision. When you went upstairs, the line to TSA was nonexistent. You could walk right to the front and wait by the gate for a flight.

Scott Johnston of Wayne had a smooth flight with no delays. Johnston said he has been to EWR a few times for work as an employee for a shipping company that transports oil across the United States and overseas. He arrived at the baggage claim area at around 2:30 p.m. after his flight from Corpus Christie, Texas.

Johnston says his flights are normally calm, and he has rarely experienced problems. Passengers in the evening might not receive the same luck although that is yet to be seen.

Travel stories from people at the airport

Frank and Sharon Mento from Demarest were waiting by baggage claim to pick up their daughter Lauren from college. Frank Mento says their daughter experienced pretty smooth travels coming from Purdue University. The lifelong resident from Bergen County attributes the relaxing airport visit to going early in the morning on Tuesday.

"Things are probably going so smooth because it is early in the morning rather than if we arrived in the afternoon or on Wednesday," Frank Mento said.

Embedded content: https://embed.flightaware.com/commercial/integrated/web/delay_map.rvt

Dean Broadbent, director of the band at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, arrived at Newark with the students all dressed in varsity jackets. Broadbent said they made the trip with no travel issues.

Lifelong Bergen county resident Gene Benzenberg sat on a bench next to baggage claim as he awaited his daughter and grandchildren coming from Florida. Benzenberg said his daughter's flight was supposed to arrive at 1:30 p.m., but ran late and until 1:50 p.m.

Benzenberg, who has lived in Saddle River for about 30 years, was excited to see his family for the holidays. He says his two children live in Florida and sometimes he is even jealous that he lives in cold New Jersey instead of the Sunshine State.

Clinton Jefferson traveled to New York to spend time with family, but not before some baggage complications. Jefferson came to EWR from Toronto after visiting some family members who reside in the north. He says he had to wait hours for his luggage when traveling at United in Canada.

Jefferson, who resides in Ireland, was waiting for his bags at EWR hoping for a less complicated transition.

Will weather affect Thanksgiving travel?

Rain could start around Newark by 5 or 6 p.m. and last into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service predicted about 1.92 inches of rain in Newark by the time the storm is done.

Speaking at Newark Airport on Monday, officials said they do not expect any weather delays . Make sure to check your flight status ahead of time to be sure.

🌧️A steady rain develops this afternoon, continuing into early Wednesday. Locally heavy downpours may cause nuisance flooding in spots. 🌬️Winds increase this evening, with gusts 30 to 40 mph possible near the coast. This could lead to a few downed trees or power lines. pic.twitter.com/tNGxKpx5ZB — NWS New York NY (@NWSNewYorkNY) November 21, 2023

What should you do if your flight is canceled or delayed?

It's important to be proactive . You can help stave off issues from delays by arriving early and checking into your flight ahead of time. Travel insurance (which you can choose to add when you book your flight) can help you get your money back if there are disruptions.

If your flight is canceled, get in touch with customer service. If you're at the airport you can try to talk to someone in person but sometimes lines can be excessively long. Afterward you can make an appeal for a refund or voucher with customer service, though success rates can vary.

How many people are traveling for Thanksgiving?

The Transportation Security Administration anticipates screening an astounding 30 million passengers from Nov. 17 to Nov. 27, averaging about 2.7 million passengers per day. This reflects a 10% increase from the same period last year. AAA projects that 4.7 million travelers will take to the skies for Thanksgiving, marking a 6.6% surge from the previous year and the highest number since 2005.

This U.S. Airport Has the Most Weather Delays, New Report Finds

EWR is most vulnerable to delays.

travel delays newark airport

Weather is the largest disruptor of air travel, according to the Federal Aviation Agency . In fact, 75 percent of all delays are caused by weather, with congestion and mechanical problems being the second and third largest causes of delays.  Now, a new report is here to spotlight which airports are more punctual than others.

The Weather Channel analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Transportation — from September 2022 through August 2023 — to find there were 385,367 weather-delayed arrivals. "That's the equivalent of over 51 years of weather delays. Most were vulnerable to snowstorms, but it doesn't take a big storm to trigger flight delays,” the Weather Channel told Travel + Leisure .

Travel + Leisure Staff

The airport most vulnerable to delays is Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey.

The top 10 airports that suffered the most weather-related delays are:

  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
  • George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport (IAH)

For travelers looking to avoid delays this holiday season, Travel + Leisure previously reported on expert tips such as opting for early morning flights instead of afternoon or evening departures. Experts also recommended booking nonstop flights instead of those with connections.

Newark Airport flight delays, cancellations among worst as July Fourth travel opens

travel delays newark airport

After an evening of widespread delays and cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airporton Friday, travel eased a bit on Saturday.

As of midafternoon on Saturday, 7% of outgoing flights from the airport were canceled and another 9% delayed, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . The 40 cancelled flights at Newark were the worst among U.S. airports, though disruptions were a problem across the nation as the July Fourth weekend got underway.

On Friday, two-thirds of flights into and out of New York City airports were either delayed or canceled around 8 p.m., according to FlightAware's " Misery Map ." Newark had 88 delays and 20 cancellations at that point, second only to New York's LaGuardia for flight problems.

Air travel has been chaotic this year as the number of travelers rebounded to pre-pandemic levels even as airlines face staffing shortages and increased fuel costs. Across the globe, FlightAware recorded more than 33,000 cancellations or delays on Friday and more than 19,000 Saturday.

Beginning on Friday, United Airlines, the main carrier at Newark, trimmed 50 domestic flights from its schedule at the airport. The cuts, representing about 12% of United's local flights, were an effort to improve on-time schedules after staffing shortages caused a chaotic Juneteenth weekend that saw thousands of flights canceled worldwide.

Canceling the flights "improves our on-time performances," United communications manager David Gonzalez said last month. "This is our attempt to help our operation adjust to the challenges at Newark."

Friday into Saturday, United's Twitter feed was full of complaints from disgruntled passengers across the country. "Our systems are experiencing high volumes," the airline tweeted to one passenger.

Executives at United and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Newark Airport, were not available for comment on Saturday. But on Friday, both organizations tweeted that they were experiencing high volumes.

The Newark Airport Twitter feed also cited weather delays, and the Port Authority urged travelers to pre-book parking at its New York City airports. "With a major rise in travelers flying during the summer season and more of those customers driving private vehicles to the airport, demand for airport parking has increased significantly, putting immense pressure on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s on-airport parking facilities," the agency said in a statement.

Those whose flights are canceled and don't rebook are entitled to a full refund--though it may involve being on hold for a while.

Ground Stop at Newark Airport Lifted to Ground Delay Following Earthquake

The delay will be in effect until 10 p.m. tonight.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit northern New Jersey on Monday, halting air traffic in the area and causing delays on Amtrak.

The earthquake hit near Lebanon, NJ, which sits just west of New York City, according to the United States Geological Survey . The shaking was felt at about 10:23 a.m. ET.

As a result of the earthquake, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a temporary ground stop for Newark Liberty International Airport, which is located about 40 miles from the epicenter. The ground stop was lifted at about 12:30 p.m. local time and replaced with a ground delay warning in effect until about 10 p.m.

The airport’s AirTrain service was also temporarily suspended, the airport shared on X.

As of noon on Friday, more than 100 flights departing Newark had been delayed along with 90 additional flights destined for the New Jersey airport, according to flight tracker FlightAware .

Flights were operating normally out of the area’s other two main airports, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport , which was initially under a temporary ground stop that had since been lifted.

For its part, Amtrak was inspecting its tracks and implemented speed restrictions in the Northeast as part of its earthquake protocol, according to the rail company . Amtrak warned “delays should be expected.”

Following the earthquake, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warned people to prepare for potential aftershocks.

New Jersey’s Gov. Phil Murphy said he “activated our State Emergency Operations Center” and asked residents not to call 911 “unless you have an actual emergency.”

New York’s Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no reports of damages or injuries, but said she “directed state agencies to survey our bridges, roads, railways, major transmission lines and dams, and any other potentially vulnerable infrastructure to ensure they are safe.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement on X that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the earthquake and was “in touch with his team who are monitoring potential impacts. The White House is in touch with federal, state, and local officials as we learn more.”

Now Arriving at an Airport Lounge Near You: Peloton Bikes, Nap Pods and Caviar Service

In recent months, a handful of exclusive credit card lounges have opened in airports in the United States. More are coming this year.

The interior of a two-story airport lounge with chairs and tables, colorful wall art and brightly lit bar.

By Christine Chung

A handful of new lounges opened by credit card issuers, including Capital One and American Express, have recently landed in airports across the United States, promising posh spots of refuge for select travelers awaiting their flights. At La Guardia Airport, caviar service will be available for pre-order. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, travelers can get complimentary massages, and at Denver International Airport, there are nap pods. In addition to amenities, the new lounges provide an ambience reminiscent of a luxury hotel lobby, both in interior design and scale, and fit several hundred people at a time.

“Lounges have certainly gotten busier, so we’ve expanded our footprint,” said Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, which in February opened its largest Centurion lounge, at 26,000 square feet at Hartsfield-Jackson , bringing its total number of lounges in the United States to 14.

Broadly, there are three types of airport lounges available to travelers: airline operated; shared-use spaces that aren’t limited to one airline or frequent flier status (think Priority Pass); and credit card lounges. Many are operated in partnership with lounge development companies.

For more than a decade, American Express was the only credit card issuer with lounges in the United States. That changed last year, when Chase Sapphire and Capital One each opened locations at major airports across the country, with plans to unveil a handful more in the coming years.

The proliferation is driven in part by changing demographics and travel patterns of fliers today. This year may set a record for the number of air travelers, with an estimated 4.7 billion people expected to fly globally. According to a survey published last May by the polling firm Morning Consult, younger travelers are more inclined than older generations to book travel with credit card loyalty programs, and those in the Gen Z age group, in particular, have signaled a declining loyalty to airline frequent flier programs.

While credit card companies saw opportunities to expand their brand awareness with lounges, the facilities also provide additional benefits to card members who pay hundreds of dollars in annual membership fees. Card fees range from $395 a year for a Capital One Venture X to $695 for an American Express Platinum.

Here are the latest highlights of new credit card lounges from around the country.

The City of Bayonne posted on social media that the fires started in Elizabeth. Newark Liberty International officials assured passengers the Elizabeth Fire Department was on the job at 4:38 p.m. and said the flames were not on airport property.

Drivers were warned of likely road delays, but the fire was not impacting flights into or out of the airport.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many fires were burning or how they started .

The Central Jersey Fire social media site for firefighter buffs said emergency workers were dealing with a three-alarm fire that may have involved downed power lines. Video posted online shows telephone poles burning. Flames were also spotted near active train tracks.

An ABC News helicopter filmed plumes of black smoke rising from the east side of the turnpike opposite the airport.

All passengers on a Boeing 737 are safe after the plane's takeoff was delayed at the Lubbock Preston Smith Airport in Texas on Thursday evening due to a reported engine fire, the latest incident to occur on a Boeing 737 aircraft.

Southwest Airlines flight 1928 was preparing to depart to Las Vegas but returned to the gate before takeoff for a reported engine fire, according to a city of Lubbock news release. The flight crew reported a possible engine fire shortly after the plane taxied from the gate. Lubbock Fire Rescue responded and was on standby as the plane returned to the gate on its own power.

Lubbock is located in the northwest part of the state, about 124 miles south of Amarillo and 345 miles west of Dallas.

In a social media post , the fire department said Aircraft Rescue Firefighting units were on the scene and confirmed the fire was contained to a single engine, with operations underway around 6:30 p.m. to extinguish it.

After the fire Thursday, the city said runway 17R was closed for cleaning and inspection. The airport urged travelers to check with their airline for up-to-date flight status information.

In a statement to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, Southwest estimated that the travelers, who were put on another plane, would arrive in Las Vegas about three hours behind schedule.

Other issues found recently on Boeing 737 planes

The engine fire at the Lubbock, Texas airport is the latest issue to be found recently in a Boeing 737 aircraft.

  • In January, a left door plug flew out of an Alaska Airlines 737 flight. The flight was headed to Ontario, California, from Portland when the incident occurred. The plane returned to Portland with all passengers and six crew members, who deplaned safely. The incident caused the Federal Aviation Administration to ground approximately 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 jets .
  • In February, a United Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft from Nassau, Bahamas to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey experienced "stuck" rudder pedals on its landing roll, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board released in March.
  • The same month, Ed Clark, the head of Boeing's 737 Max program, exited the company immediately , Boeing's CEO said in a memo to employees.
  • On March 8, passengers that had landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas had to evacuate after the United Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8  plane tilted and rolled onto the grass  from the taxiway. No one was injured, but passengers had to use emergency stairs and were bussed to terminals.
  • On March 15, a panel was found to be missing on the underside of a United Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane after it had landed in Medford, Oregon, the Associated Press reported . No injuries were reported on the flight, and the plane had already arrived at its destination in San Francisco, when a post-flight inspection found the missing panel.

Still, experts insist it's safe to fly , despite the months of heightened tension around air travel.

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.

After the blowout of the Alaska Air plane in January, people have become more aware of aviation incidents than they were in the past, said Laura Einsetler, a captain at a major U.S. airline and author of the Captain Laura blog.

“One aspect is that now with social media and the internet, we’re seeing every single thing that we can possibly see that’s happening around the world," she told USA TODAY last month. "The perception is that more things are happening when at the same time, 2023 was actually the safest year in our industry of all time.”
