Under the 1951 UN Convention Refugee Travel Document (blue) is issued by the United Kingdom to a refugee who has been granted asylum in the UK. If someone has been recognised as a refugee then they can apply for a travel document under the 1951 refugee Convention, which is a blue passport-sized document. Information about applying for this travel document is available  on the UK government website .

The Refugee Travel Document Normally is normally issued for up to 10 years for adults and for up to 5 years for children, or in line with limited leave. It also may be issued with a shorter validity if considered appropriate.

Travel documents are normally valid for all countries other than the country asylum is claimed from and/or the country of origin.

Stateless person’s travel document

A stateless person may apply for a travel document under 1954 United Nations Convention relating to Stateless Persons. Information about applying for this travel document is available  on the UK government website . For more information on statelessness, see our  fact sheet on statelessness .

The travel document is normally valid for up to 5 years (children) or 10 years (adults) or in line with the leave granted. The stateless travel document is normally valid for all countries.

Certificate of Travel

Certificates of Travel may be issued to individuals who:

• are permanently resident in the United Kingdom, or
• have been granted Humanitarian Protection (HP) or Discretionary Leave (DL) to enter or remain in the UK for a limited period, following an unsuccessful asylum application  and  can provide documentary evidence that they have been formally and unreasonably refused a passport by their country of origin.

The certificate of travel is normally valid for up to 5 years or for the length of leave the individual has. The Home Office guidance states that the certificate of travel is normally valid for all countries but there were previously issues with the acceptance of the document in a number of countries, including many European ones. It is recommended that a particular country’s rules should be checked before applying for such a document and travelling to that country.

However, if an individual stay outside of the UK for a period of more than 2 years, that leave to remain (whether indefinite or limited) will lapse. The leave to remain will not lapse if someone comes back and left again during the two-year period – it must be continuous for the leave to lapse.

US Passport Visa-Free Countries 2024

A United States passport is a powerful document to have, ranking 7th in terms of travel freedom according to the 2021 Henley Passport Index . The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of countries' passports according to the travel freedom they afford their holders. The U.S. passport is tied for 7th place with passports from several other countries: Czech Republic , Greece , Malta , Norway , and the United Kingdom .

Where can U.S. passport holders travel visa-free?

As of October 1, 2021, US citizens can travel visa-free to 185 countries and territories (though a few require a visa on arrival). Note, however, that some of these countries do implement stiffer requirements after one has stayed a certain length of time—typically 30, 60, 90, or 180 days.

Perhaps most importantly considering Europe 's popularity as a vacation destination, US citizens do not need a tourist visa to enter any of the 27 countries of the European Union —or the United Kingdom, which recently left the EU.

Countries that still require a visa ... and possibly something more

In countries where visas are required, travelers must typically pay registration fees, departure taxes, and travel fees. For example, if a U.S. citizen wants to travel to Russia , a visa is required, can take up to three weeks to process, and costs $139.

Many countries require potential visitors to be fingerprinted and photographed. Additionally, countries including Chad , the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Niger , require an International Certificate of Vaccination. This practice has become particularly prevalent since the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in early 2020.

Finally, some countries screen potential visitors based upon their previous destinations. In Libya , Sudan , and Syria , anyone with Israeli entry or exit stamps on their passport may be denied entry into the country.

China also requires a travel visa for US citizens. The application must include travel dates, itinerary, and proof of onward travel out of China. The application must also be typed and have no handwritten corrections. Additionally, every visitor to China between the ages of 14 and 70 is fingerprinted upon arrival and departure.

Which country is off-limits to U.S. citizens?

US citizens are not permitted to travel to North Korea , with or without a visa. The travel ban took effect in 2017 after a United States student died after being released from a North Korean prison. Failure to adhere to the rules can result in criminal penalties and having one's passport revoked. To travel to North Korea, US passport holders need to obtain a special passport validation from the United States government.

Always double-check before departure

Before traveling, it is necessary to check the visa requirements of one's destination. It's also important to check any travel advisories a country might have, which are issued by the U.S. Department of State for unsafe countries .

• ETA and VOA indicate countries where an Electronic Travel Authority document or a Visa On Arrival may be obtained upon arrival in the country.

Most European countries are in category 1. Americans need ETIAS to visit any of these countries . More information about ETIAS below.

ETIAS Countries for Visa-Free Travel From the U.S.

U.S. passport holders can travel to the following countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period . From 2025, you must hold an ETIAS to travel visa-free.

Americans need ETIAS for visa-free travel in Europe

ETIAS is a new requirement for visa-exempt third-country nationals, including Americans. Travelers from the United States need to apply for ETIAS before visiting Schengen countries.

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization, similar to the United States ESTA . It prescreens visa-free travelers before they arrive in the Schengen Area. The system enhances security and improves border management.

From 2025, visa-free visitors from the United States must have a valid ETIAS linked to their passport.

Other European countries U.S. Citizens Can Visit Without a Visa

ETIAS does not apply to all European countries. Americans can visit these european countries visa-free for the time specified:

How to Apply for a Visa

Please note that the information below changes regularly. For example, the UK leaving the EU may change the ability to travel visa-free to European countries. Therefore, you should always check the visa requirements of your country of destination before you travel.

This question comes up when you are considering travelling to one of the European or Schengen Countries or another country. Once you have obtained refugee status, you may wonder where you can travel without the need for a visa.

If you are a holder of a Refugee Travel Document issued by the United Kingdom under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees , you can travel visa-free to a lot of countries. Different countries have their own travel restrictions and require you to have a visa even for short term visits like tourism, even if you have a Refugee Travel Document.

When you are travelling, you will need to make sure that you carry your valid UK residence permit confirming your refugee status together with the Refugee Travel Document.

All the above countries issue refugee travel documents in one form or another. They allow you to leave the country that issued them and return with the same documents. Some countries allow you to travel to other countries without the need for a visa. Whereas, you may need to obtain a visa for other countries. These arrangements are usually due to agreements between countries.

Please note that in some instances, you may lose your refugee status if you travel to the country from which you sought refuge. You will need to check with the country that issued your travel documents.

Getting a Travel Visa

A travel visa is an official document, usually stamped or affixed into the bearer’s passport, that grants the right to legally enter, remain within, or leave a foreign country. A  Schengen visa , for example, allows you to travel to any of the  Schengen countries  as well as other  non-Schengen countries  that allow travellers to enter their countries with a Schengen visa.

Travellers without a valid travel visa will be refused entry into a country. And, if the individual enters the country through illegal means and is later discovered, may be punished and deported.

Each country has their own processes for applying for a visa. Generally, you will need to fill in an application form and submit any requirements that the consulate or embassy asks for, and some even require you to appear for an interview .

There are many factors that could add to your visa being approved or rejected by the consulate, and many find the process of applying for a visa stressful for this reason. You can choose to do this on your own, or get a service like IaM to help you either make the application or check the application that you filled out yourself.

I tried to go from Birmingham to Milan with Ryanair and they denied me boarding even though I printed embassy website and consulate email confirming that visa is not required. Hi I am a Zimbabwean national who holds a UK refugee travel document and I just wanted to check if South Africa definitely does not require a visa as the last time a friend travelled there about ten years ago they did require one. At that time it did state that we needed one on their website but this is no longer stated so am guessing this has changed. Checked with the embassy but referred me to vfs global.

Regarding my earlier enquiry just got an email from VFS global South Africa desk and the agent stated that a visa would need to be applied for prior to travel if I hold a UK refugee travel document as a Zimbabwean national.

A US green card is a pathway to a US passport. While you wait for your US passport, your US green card is already making your current passport strong . Not as strong as a US passport but quite strong. You already have visa-free access to 48 additional countries.

Why are there VISA-FREE countries for US green card holders?

US passport (and US citizenship) is considered one of the strongest in the world. A US green card is a pathway to US citizenship. Many countries believe that someone with a US green card will not jeopardize their chances of becoming a US citizen by remaining illegally in another country. 

Working towards acquiring a US green card requires remaining several years in the US or investing enormous amounts of cash or building very strong family ties with the US. It’s silly for someone to let go of years of valuable time and millions of dollars of investments just to stay illegally in another country. Therefore, countries trust US green card holders as genuine travelers and treat them almost like someone with a strong passport. So, these countries offer visa-free access to US green card holders. 

How many countries can you visit with a US green card?

As of 2024, there are 48 countries and territories that you can visit with a US green card. This list of countries for US green card holders includes visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa countries. Japan is the new addition to the list with the option to apply for e-visa without needing to go to the embassy.

• Entry rule: Entry into Canada is only allowed if you present a valid passport from the country of nationality along with a green card.

• Must show proof of economic solvency for a minimum of 500 USD

There are about 48 countries green card holders can travel without visa. US green card holders had to invest enormous amounts of money and time to acquire the green card, which will eventually lead to US citizenship. Therefore, countries believe that US green card holders will not jeopardize their chances of becoming US citizens by remaining illegally in another country. They consider green holders as genuine travelers and provide them with VISA-FREE access.

Travelling Abroad for Refugees

Can i travel outside germany.

Do you wish to pack your bags and go away for a while? Whether you want to travel for work- or family-related reasons or would like to have a holiday abroad, it is not always clear which countries you are permitted to go to as a refugee. Here, we try to clarify which countries you are allowed to travel to with your residence status and travel document as a refugee.

In principle, Foreign citizens in Germany are required to have a valid passport or a substitute passport. The issuing and renewal of foreign citizens' passports is usually the responsibility of the embassy or consulate of their country of origin. 

However, certain groups of people are exempt from this regulation, for whom a passport substitute could be issued:

• Persons entitled to asylum and recognised “refugees” according to the Geneva Refugee Convention
• Stateless persons
• People who have subsidiary protection
• People for whom a national ban on deportation has been established and who have no reasonable opportunity to obtain a passport from their home country.

The mentioned groups are often issued a passport replacement document ("Passersatzpapier") in Germany, which exists in three forms:

• The travel document for refugees (Known as "Blauer Pass" or " Blue Passport ")
• The travel document for stateless persons
• The travel document for foreigners

In principle, you will be handed the travel document for refugees together with your residence permit at the Immigration Office. Learn more about the travel document for refugees in our chapter " Blue Passport ". As a stateless person or someone who is residing in Germany under subsidiary protection or due to a national ban on deportation, you must apply for the travel document for foreigners and stateless persons ("Grey Passport" or "Grauer Pass") at the relevant Immigration Office. You will need to prove to the authorities that it is not likely or feasible for you to obtain a passport from your home country. You can find the relevant Immigration Office at  bamf.de .

Can I travel abroad?

You will find all the essential information about the travel document for refugees in our chapter " Blue Passport ".

In principle, you can travel abroad if you hold a travel document for foreigners or stateless persons (the so-called "Gray passport"). For most countries, however, you need a visa, plus, not all countries recognise the "Grey Passport" as a valid travel document. Before planning a trip, you should contact the embassy of the country in question to see whether they recognise your travel document and issue you a visa or not.  On the last page of this UNHCR report , you can see a list of countries which recognise the "Gray Passport". Whether you will be issued a visa depends on various factors such as your country of origin, nationality, your situation in Germany and alike, so it is difficult to predict the result of your visa application.

As someone who holds a "Grey Passport", you can go to all the Schengen States without a visa and stay there for up to three months. You can find a list of Schengen states at  auswaertiges-amt.de.

Please note:  You could lose your residence permit in Germany if you travel to your home country while residing in Germany under subsidiary protection or due to a national ban on deportation. If the Immigration Office learns about your trip, they can initiate a revocation procedure, and you could lose your protection and right of residence in Germany.

Important: What are the “Schengen states”?

The " Schengen States " are a group of countries in Europe that have agreed to keep their shared borders open to free travel. This means that residents of these countries can travel from one Schengen country to another without passport controls or visa requirements as if they were in their own country. This means that you are allowed to enter and travel within the Schengen States as a tourist for three months within a period of 180 days.

Not all European countries belong to the Schengen area. Some countries have decided against joining and are maintaining their own border controls. Therefore, it is always a good idea to find out before travelling whether the country you want to travel to is part of the Schengen area. If you are unsure whether you need a visa for your trip, visit our community platform “ Together in Germany ”– our community managers will be happy to help you with your questions.

If you reside in Germany under subsidiary protection or due to a national ban on deportation and still have a valid passport from your home country, you can use this passport to travel abroad and present your German residence permit to be allowed back into Germany. Whether you need a visa for your destination country depends on your country of origin.

In principle, you must not travel abroad during your asylum procedure and when holding a tolerated stay permit ("Duldung") . However, you can try to apply for an exemption– you might be allowed to travel, for example, and go on school trips (for school children). Or spend time with family on important occasions such as weddings or funerals.

Please note: You must definitely apply for your trip abroad to the Immigration Office in advance. You can find the Immigration Office responsible for you at bamf.de . Be sure to submit your application as early as possible, as processing your application can take a long time. Each application is examined individually.

A “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” is a document issued when a decision has not yet been made regarding the residence permit for which one has applied, for example, when you want to extend your residence permit or apply for a new one.

In such cases, you will either receive a “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” in accordance with Section 81, Paragraph 4 of the Residence Act or Section 81, Paragraph 3 of the Residence Act . With a “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” in accordance with Section 81, Paragraph 4 of the Residence Act , you can move freely within the Schengen area and re-enter Germany with your recognised passport or passport substitute. However, the prerequisite for it is that you present the officially issued “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” and the third box on page 3 of your “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” is checked. Entry and exit stamps are affixed in the passport or passport substitute, not in the “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ”.

Unfortunately, this rule does not apply to “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” issued in accordance with Section 81, Paragraph 3 of the Residence Act .

A “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ”, according to Section 81, Paragraph 3 Residence Act , is issued if you do not yet have a residence permit or your identity has not yet been verified. With a “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” according to Section 81, Paragraph 3 Residence Act, staying in the federal territory and travelling within Germany is permitted. However, re-entry after a stay abroad is not allowed. This “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” often reads "gilt nicht für Auslandsreisen"  to indicate that the holder is not allowed to travel abroad.

If you believe that your “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” was issued incorrectly and needs to be changed, please contact your local Immigration Office.

Important : If you are not sure what type of “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ” you have, ask your local Immigration Office whether you are allowed to re-enter Germany or not. If you are planning a trip outside the Schengen area, also check with the authorities of the destination country whether you are allowed to enter and leave with the “ Fiktionsbescheinigung ”.

Please note that a visa may be required in addition to the “Fiktionsbescheinigung” depending on the destination . Important preparations before your trip

Travel health insurance is a type of insurance that covers your medical treatment costs during your trip. Since German health insurance at best only partially covers medical costs abroad, it always makes sense to take out an affordable travel health insurance that covers medical emergencies abroad. It is important to read the insurance conditions carefully and select the insurance cover according to your individual needs.

If you receive social benefits such as “Bürgergeld” from the Jobcenter, you are legally obliged to report your absence to them in good time. Contact your local Jobcenter before your trip and inform them about your absence . You can also do so online . After the Jobcenter has checked your application and if your absence is approved , you will receive your “Bürgergeld” and your health insurance payments will continue during your absence. However, if you are away for longer than 3 weeks or cannot be reached by the Jobcenter, your “Bürgergeld” and health insurance benefits will be cut.

If you reside in Germany as an asylum-seeker, recognised refugee, or an individual entitled to subsidiary protection or a national ban on deportation, you should not travel to your home country. If the Immigration Office or the BAMF learn about you visiting your country, they can initiate a revocation procedure as a result of which you could lose your right of residence in Germany.

In case of enquiry, HKSAR passport holders are advised to consult the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong before travelling.

5 visa updates for 2024 that Indian travellers will benefit from

With the summer holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start mapping out your travel plans. And as you do, it's also essential to stay updated on the latest visa regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Also, staying updated will help you choose your options more wisely, and make the most out of it. In short, knowing the visa requirements and updates can make all the difference.

Here are some noteworthy visa updates for 2024 that every Indian traveller should be aware of.

Japan's introduction of eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has launched eVisa applications for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this streamlined process retains the familiar steps of submitting documents and applications to VFS. Designed for short-term tourism, the eVisa will be offering a single-entry option allowing stays of up to 90 days. Both Indian nationals and foreigners residing in India are eligible to submit their applications.

Notably, visas will now be issued electronically rather than as physical stickers in passports. Upon approval, travellers must present a visa issuance notice on their mobile device at the airport, necessitating internet access. Do note that alternative formats such as PDFs or printed copies of the eVisa will not be accepted.

Dubai's introduces five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa

Dubai has recently introduced a new visa program tailored for Indian tourists in response to a significant increase in the number of Indian visitors. This visa program offers a five-year, multiple-entry permit, enabling travelers to spend up to 90 days per visit, with the option to extend once, and a yearly cap of 180 days.

This visa will cater to both business and leisure trips, and will allow unlimited entries and exits within the five-year period. Requirements will include a passport photo, six months' worth of bank statements showing a balance of at least $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months, health insurance, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process will typically take 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand's visa-free option for Indian travellers

The Thai Government recently announced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. During this period, Indian travellers can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya's eliminates visa requirements

Effective January 1, Kenya eliminated visa requirements for not only Indian citizens, but also for all global visitors, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation's vital tourism sector. This visa-free initiative will facilitate seamless travel experiences for visitors keen on wildlife safaris and beach vacations.

Romania and Bulgaria's access to Schengen Visas

Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen Area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, permitting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, do note that visas issued before April 1 by these two countries won't grant access to the entire Schengen area. Travellers from non-Schengen countries may still undergo passport checks when travelling between different Schengen destinations. Visa issuance for Bulgaria and Romania can be processed on their respective official websites.
