How to Get from Timisoara Romania to Belgrade Serbia by Train

UPDATE : A lot of things keep changing with this route. I was just there (August 2019) in Timisiora and limited trains were available. BUT some people have informed me the trains arent running when they went. I suggest you visit the train station for up to date information. There is ALWAYS a way to get from Timisiora to Belgrade and vice versa. Either trains or buses. The team at Wandertooth have a more detailed write up on this route. I suggest yall check them out.

If you search online, you would think traveling from Timisoara Romania to Belgrade Serbia is complicated. It’s actually quite simple. So I decided to do a little photo essay giving you step by step directions. The prices and times in this article are going to be valid through December 2015 according to the rail service.

• Buy your Ticket at the Timisoara Nord Train Station. You’ll need to go to the International counter. There is only one so should be easy to find.

• Your ticket will be from Timisoara to Beograd. The ticket cost 45 Lei total. They take cash and card. A cool thing is it’s an open ended ticket for two weeks. Mines was from July 20 th –August 8 th . Meaning I could take the train any day within that period. Good for those who like to party a bit and may oversleep here and there.

• Your train isn’t marked with a destination name or train number. Although the train technically does have a number. Normally leaves from track 1. The track closest to the train entrance. You’re looking for a relatively modern train heading to Vrsac. NOT BELGRADE!!! The first train is at 7:50am. I recommend this one as it’s not crowded and it’ll get you into Beograd at a decent time.

• Train is a few years old but is a small “high speed” train and relatively modern. If you need power you can find two outlets near the bathroom on the side of a shelf near some seats.

• At about 850 or 9am you’ll arrive at Stamora Moravita. The EU Romanian Border Crossing Point. A border guard will board and take every foreigners passport to give you an exit stamp. Took about 15 minutes and we were on our way.

• After about 20 more minutes, around 9:50am, you’ll arrive at Vrsac. The same process happens. Foreigners wait on the train. Border guards come and take your passports again. They then return them and you move to the next train.

• We had to wait for our train to arrive about 30 minutes from Beograd. Once the other passengers disembark you just show the attendant your ticket and you board. The train leaves at 1044am (944local).

My Secret to Weeks of Free Lodging in Europe

I wanted to stay in apartments or houses—but i was a brand-new college grad on a budget.

This is One Thing , a column with tips on how to live.

After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to travel for a few months, so I secured a part-time job that could be done remotely. I didn’t want to do my work shifts from a hostel bunk bed or random cafés that stayed open late. (I’d be in Europe, thanks to an EU passport, and my gig was based in the states.) Paying for Airbnbs the entire trip would eat up way too much of my paychecks. It was kismet that just as I was starting to plan my travels, my friend sent me a video about a couple traveling the world and dog-sitting along the way, using an app called Trusted Housesitters .

As an avid dog lover, I thought it was perfect. I paid a little over $100 to make an account, then started browsing housesits around the world. I adorned my profile with pictures of me and the various dogs in my life, and applied for opportunities across the ocean. Before I had even left the United States, I had three gigs set up: I’d spend about 10 days in Scotland and Wales, then three weeks in Amsterdam.

Just like when setting up drinks through a dating app, you do have to be vigilant and pay attention for red flags when talking to potential hosts. My stay in Scotland was less than ideal for many reasons—the situation could have been easily avoided if I had listened to my gut and declined that gig. (The app does do background checks, and there’s an opportunity for both sides to leave reviews, meaning you don’t go in completely unaware.) But the other dog-sits were fantastic. One experience went so well that last fall, I returned to Amsterdam to once again to dog-sit Pretzel, a lovely Maltipoo, while her parents got married and went on their honeymoon.

Although I opted for longer sits abroad, there is also the option to just watch a furry friend stateside for a weekend. (If you do go internationally, be mindful that you might potentially need a work or tourist visa.) I just checked the app, and as I’m writing this, there are opportunities available in cities that include Austin, Atlanta, and Boulder.

Of course, you have the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s dog—you need to do some planning and can’t just leave the pet alone all day, and the owners don’t pay you. But the free accommodations feel like a fair exchange to me. I also love that many of the dog-sit locations are in more residential areas, so you’re able to experience local life in whatever city you’re in. Plus, you get to hang with a cute dog. What could be better?

Is Southwest about to end its free-for-all seating?

The company says it is ‘very seriously studying’ alternatives to its signature open-seating system.

Southwest Airlines fans know the drill: Check in to your flight exactly 24 hours in advance and secure your spot in line to board the plane. What seat you’ll end up in? That’s a mystery until the last minute.

A puzzle to some and an invigorating challenge to others, Southwest’s unique boarding process and one-class cabin are now under the microscope as the airline looks for ways to prop up its financial performance. In a call with investors Thursday, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said executives are “very seriously studying” seating and the way passengers board the planes.

“It’s been several years since we last studied this in-depth, and customer preference and expectations change over time,” Jordan said. “We are also studying the operations and financial benefits of any potential change.”

Unlike most airlines, Southwest doesn’t have a premium section on its planes that commands higher fares. Where other carriers might charge extra for a cushy seat in the first few rows or an extra-legroom option near the front, Southwest customers can grab whatever seat is open. A spot near the front won’t come with any additional frills, however.

In a news release announcing quarterly earnings, a conference call discussing those results and an interview with CNBC , representatives said they were taking a deep look at customer preferences around seating and boarding. The current open-seating system was put in place when airliners were generally less full, the company said, noting that preferences change as planes fill up.

“There’s no decision, there’s nothing to report other than we are seriously looking at this,” Jordan said in response to a question about seating. “But early indications both for our customers and for Southwest look pretty darn interesting.”

While Southwest has contemplated the possibility of assigned seating for nearly two decades at least , the review has accelerated over the past six months, the CEO said. Jordan said the company will say more during an event for investors in September. The company has also recently said that it is preparing to add red-eye flights in the next couple of years.

Today, Southwest passengers can pay more to end up in a better seat, even without picking that seat in advance. Upgrades that provide priority boarding and early check-in give customers the first pick of spots. The airline makes “hundreds of millions of dollars” from those upgraded boarding options, executives said last year.

“They’re in kind of a pickle regarding revenue generation, so they’re looking at everything,” said Robert W. Mann, a consultant and former airline executive. “I think what they have seen is that when they’ve tweaked their existing cattle call … they find it to be very lucrative.”

He said that if the airline could deliver a more “pleasant” boarding process, or seat selection for a fee, it would probably be attractive to travelers.

“There’s nothing about their boarding process that they couldn’t improve,” Mann said.

Travel analyst Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group , said he did research more than a decade ago that found a large number of people avoided Southwest because it did not offer extra-legroom seats, assigned seats or a premium business-class cabin. He said that the airline could make “an enormous amount of money” by adding assigned seating — and that travelers would probably welcome knowing what seat they would end up in.

“I think it could be an incredibly positive thing for the airline, but I recognize that Southwest has a more-than-50-year history of being egalitarian, of having open seating and being different from other airlines,” he said.

"At a given airline, all employees receive more or less the same flight benefits," says airline pilot Patrick Smith of AskThePilot.com . "Normally, an employee and his or her immediate family members, partners, and/or a designated companion are entitled to complimentary space-available travel." Retired airline employees might also be eligible for such benefits, depending on how long they worked for the company.

Such employees (or retirees) who fly on their benefits are known as non-revs. "Non-rev is shoptalk shorthand for non-revenue, as the airline makes little or no income from your patronage," Smith explains.

Depending on the airline, however, non-revs may have to pay certain fees in order to fly for "free," whether that's a per-segment charge or an annual fee. Sometimes, upgrading to first or business class might incur additional charges, too, but the specifics are different for every airline. And airline employees are still responsible for paying the taxes on each flight.

But there is a catch to non-revving, and it all revolves around that "space-available" descriptor. Airline employees only fly for free (or close to free) on standby, which means they can only fill seats that are empty.

"If there are three empty seats and 20 standby employees, 17 will get bumped, and they will all look for another flight, any flight, with empty seats," says Sue Fogwell, a retired United flight attendant. "Sometimes, employees have to be creative in getting to where they want to go. We're all used to getting bumped from flights and getting stuck — sometimes for days — at a destination."

As for the order in which non-revs end up on the standby list, it's the same situation as passengers on complimentary upgrade lists: There's a hierarchy. "Each active and retired employee has a boarding status code, and boarding is based on seniority," says Fogwell. "Active employees have a better boarding priority than a retired employee. As an example, a retired pilot with 30 years of service will board after a new active employee with six months of service who works in ramp or an office."

Pilots and flight attendants, however, do have a bit of an edge over other airline employees when flying standby — they can fly in jump seats. "Pilots may ride in one of the auxiliary cockpit seats, while flight attendants can ride in one of the unused fold-down cabin seats," says Smith. "Neither are comfortable, but it’s a useful benefit if you’re in a pinch."

Ultimately, flying non-rev is a stressful game that's part strategy (i.e. looking for flights that aren't fully booked) and part chance, requiring careful planning, a healthy degree of flexibility, and plenty of patience. "Try not to be jealous. None of this is as fabulous as it sounds," says Smith. "Non-revs are often conspicuous at the boarding gate — they're the ones sweating, looking nervous, and occasionally weeping."

If an airline employee doesn't want to play the standby game, though, many airlines do offer discounts on airfare. "We can get discounted tickets on French Bee flights and on airlines French Bee has staff travel partnerships with," shares French Bee flight attendant Matt Seynave. And that's still a good perk in itself.

Plus, if you're friends with an airline employee, you may be able to benefit from travel perks, too. "Most airlines also grant a limited number of reduced-rate tickets each year, commonly called 'buddy passes,' that can be given out to friends or extended family," says Smith. "These tend to be considerably more expensive than the passes used by employees themselves, and are subject to numerous restrictions." 

But hey, a discount is a discount.

Retail joint-venture operations at airports in Turkey and Israel topped $1.1 billion and $500 million respectively last year helping to push one of the world’s biggest duty-free operators to record annual revenue of $3.9 billion (€3.6 billion) in 2023.

Despite some considerable economic and geopolitical challenges, Hamburg-based travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann managed to slightly exceed 2019 sales for the first time since the pandemic, with year-over-year growth of 25%.

The fifth-generation family-owned company is now looking very positively at 2024 after a strong first quarter that was 24% ahead of the same period last year and above budget forecasts. On Thursday, co-CEO Raoul Spanger said that €4 billion was within sight. He told gathered media: “Strategic investments in the group’s business portfolio from 2023 will come into full effect this year (and) turnover should reach a new all-time high in 2024 and exceed €4 billion.”

Those investments included the buyout of its joint venture business in Israel—mainly at Tel Aviv Airport but also some border stores—to take 100% control, and the establishment of a regional office in Dubai from which to spearhead distribution, and eventually store operations, in the Middle East and Africa. One target will likely be Angola's new airport in the capital, Luanda.

The company also won a retail concession for the first time in Saudi Arabia at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport with joint venture partners Jordanian Duty Free Shops and the diversified Astra Group ; and signed the contract for stores aboard Aroya, the first vessel from newly established cruise company Cruise Saudi.

“By entering into carefully selected new partnerships, expanding existing ones, and making strategic investments in other business segments and channels we continue to become more international,” said Heinemann’s other co-CEO Max Heinemann.

JV deals have long been a hallmark of Heinemann’s expansion strategy into new markets. With the global travel retail channel consolidating rapidly, as exemplified most recently by the huge Avolta/Dufry merger with Autogrill, Heinemann is taking steps to protect its market position.

The travel retailer’s business is dominated by Europe with 59% of turnover (€2.1 billion) last year. The region—where the retailer’s top airport locations are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Oslo, and Vienna—also had the fastest growth (24%), largely on the back of rising passenger numbers.

However, Norway, historically one of Heinemann’s biggest sales hotspots, was negatively impacted by the imposition of much lower limits on tobacco allowances and the devaluation of the Norwegian krone.

Stability in geographical diversity

Geographical diversification offers greater resilience when it comes to country legislative shocks and currency volatility, and also regional impacts. For example, last year, the continuing fighting in Gaza, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, came out of the blue and hit travel and retail sales at Tel Aviv Airport in the final quarter.

Heinemann’s sales director for Middle East Africa, Bernard Schlafstein said that it would have been a record year at Tel Aviv had the war not started. Naturally, this impacted the growth for the whole Middle East & Africa business which ended the year up 18%, but would have been higher.

On the plus side, the nature of the shopping at Israel's biggest airport means that revenue has picked up quickly. Depressed tourism is not a major factor for store sales as it is outbound Israelis doing most of the buying, and collecting their purchases on return.

That non-reliance on foreign tourism is borne out by results this year. Schlafstein commented: “Our numbers are almost back to last year at around 85% to 90%, even though the passenger figures are much lower.” One key purchase driver is that pricing at the airport is significantly lower than in the domestic market. This has led to very high average transaction values (ATVs) in the core duty-free shop where about 80 pay-points are present to cater to the enormous demand.

However, the standout location was Istanbul Airport where Heinemann operates with its joint venture partners Unifree and ATU Duty Free. There, turnover surpassed €1 billion and Schlafstein described it as “unstoppable.”

With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, rich Russians have been using the gateway—and also Dubai International (where they are the second most important nationality for Dubai Duty Free)—as a connecting route to other destinations. Their presence meant that last year at Istanbul, 40% of fashion turnover came from Russians. This year, so far, revenue at the Turkish Airlines hub is above budget for Heinemann.
