Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

While there are many things you can go without on a trip, a toothbrush isn't one of them. But depending on where you're going and how long you'll be staying, you might want to use something other than what you have at home.

So, what toothbrush should you pack? "Deciding between an electric toothbrush and a manual brush for travel will depend on personal preference and brush design — not all electric and manual toothbrushes are convenient for travel," says board-certified orthodontist Marina Gonchar, DMD.

We tested more than 40 toothbrushes over a six-month period to help you narrow it down, evaluating each for ease of use, functionality, portability, quality, and value. With insight from Dr. Gonchar and other dental professionals in mind, we researched travel-friendly options to round out our list.

Best Electric Travel Toothbrushes

Best overall, electric, oral-b genius 9600 electric toothbrush.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The Genius 9600 goes above and beyond to clean your teeth and boasts ample features, like multiple modes, Bluetooth connectivity, and a charging travel case.

It's slightly heavier than other electric models we tested, and since it comes with several parts, there's more to store at home.

Our favorite electric toothbrush is the Oral-B Genius 9600. Though it took us a moment to figure out how it works, we were thoroughly impressed by the feature-rich design. And once we got started, it was very straightforward and user-friendly. This toothbrush has multiple cleaning modes (regular, light, whitening, and tongue) that you can toggle between by tapping the handle. Our teeth felt exceptionally clean and slick after brushing, thanks to the round head that helps you get into every nook and cranny of your mouth. It also has Bluetooth connectivity for dental hygiene lovers who want to get super into tracking and improving their teeth-cleaning habits.

The Genius 9600 comes with various parts, including a corded charging stand, a suction holder for the toothbrush or your phone (for real-time feedback through the Oral-B app), and a hard-sided USB travel case. Though the travel case is undoubtedly handy for trips, the rest is kind of a lot to store at home.

This toothbrush is slightly heavier than other electric options but certainly not too heavy to pack in a suitcase. When you're away from home, you can charge both the toothbrush and your phone with the USB case. The rechargeable battery lasts about two weeks, so if you're going on a shorter trip, you might not even need to charge it while you're away. All things considered, we think the price is reasonable.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Oral-b genius x limited.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

This advanced toothbrush makes your teeth feel professionally cleaned and comes with a charging travel case for on-the-go use.

The countertop charging stand tips over easily.

We were also big fans of the Oral-B Genius X Limited during our tests. The user-friendly design was easy to use right off the bat. It comes almost fully charged, so you could pack it in your suitcase without charging it first and start using it on your trip right away. This advanced toothbrush makes you feel like you just got your teeth professionally cleaned. It vibrates every 30 seconds to notify you when to switch to the next quadrant of your mouth, and a red light flashes if you brush too hard.

This toothbrush is also Bluetooth-enabled, so you can connect to Oral-B's app to track your habits. It lasts about two weeks on a full charge. Not only that, but it comes with a charging travel case that also charges your phone, plus a charging stand for at home. However, since it tips over easily when on the stand, you'll want to place it somewhat out of the way if possible. Beyond that, we have no complaints and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Genius X to travelers and, really, anyone else in the market for a new electric toothbrush.

Best Splurge

Philips sonicare prestige 9900 toothbrush.

The Sonicare 9900 Prestige looks, feels, and performs like a luxury product and comes with a sleek travel case that doubles as a charger.

It doesn't come with any replacement heads.

Want the Cadillac of toothbrushes? The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige won't disappoint. This high-end electric toothbrush looks, feels, and performs like a luxury product. Out of the box, it's about 40 percent charged and lasts roughly two weeks on a full charge. Despite the advanced design, it's very easy to use — just turn it on and select your preferred intensity setting. You can also sync it with the app to get real-time guidance and track your brushing habits.

The 9900 Prestige comes with a sleek frosted charging stand for your bathroom counter, plus an attractive faux leather travel case that looks like a high-end sunglasses case and charges your toothbrush via USB. Unlike many other models, it only comes with one head, and the replacements are up to $30 a pair. You'll definitely be glad to have this toothbrush with you on your next trip, but since it's a bit of an investment, consider using it as your everyday at-home toothbrush as well.

Oral-B iO Series 9

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Value 4.2 /5

This high-tech toothbrush gives you real-time guidance while brushing and makes your teeth feel as smooth as glass.

It needs to be charged weekly, whereas other electric models can last two or more weeks.

If you're interested in a smart toothbrush, the Oral-B iO Series 9 might be your best bet. Setup is a cinch — just download the Oral-B app and connect it through Bluetooth. The app tells you where you're brushing in real-time, how long you've been brushing, if you're using too much pressure, and when you miss a spot. (You can also use it without the app when you're short on time or once you feel like you've mastered your brushing habits.)

The iO Series 9 has seven modes, including daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, gum care, whitening, and tongue clean. After brushing, our teeth felt smooth as glass. It comes with a charging stand for at home and a magnetic charging case for travel. As with such a high-tech design, this toothbrush will need to be charged about once a week, whereas other models often last closer to two weeks. Still, it charges from zero to 100 percent in just three hours, and the remaining battery life is displayed right on the toothbrush, as well as on the app.

The Details: Electric | Soft bristles | Magnetic charging travel case

Best Features

Oral-b io series 8.

  • Ease of Use 3.5 /5
  • Design 3.8 /5
  • Functionality 4.5 /5

The iO Series shows key info right on the handle and syncs with the Oral-B app to track your habits and score each brushing session.

It takes a little time to set up before your first use, and the high-tech design could be overkill, depending on where you're traveling.

The Oral-B iO Series 8 was also a hit during our tests. Though it took us some time to read through the instructions and set up the app before the first use, it was overall easy to use. The handle is sturdy but not too heavy or thick, with a battery life display, a built-in timer, and a light that glows red if you press too hard. You can track your brushing on the app and receive a score for each session. While the gamified aspect makes brushing fun, it might be overkill when traveling — but you always have the option to use it without the app.

This electric toothbrush comes with a countertop magnetic charging stand and a travel case that doubles as a charger. It has six modes you can easily toggle between, including daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, gum care, and whitening. Our teeth were noticeably cleaner after using it, and we didn't experience any sensitivity or discomfort. The price is steep, but we think it's worth the investment.

Best for Sensitive Teeth

Oral-b io series 5.

  • Functionality 4.8 /5

This electric toothbrush has a soft-bristled head, multiple modes for sensitive teeth, and a light that tells you when you're brushing too hard.

It doesn't stop after two minutes like it's supposed to, and the travel case doesn't have a built-in charger.

Sensitive teeth? Go with the Oral-B iO Series 5. This electric toothbrush has a soft-bristle head that's gentle on the teeth and gums. It glows red when you press too hard, green when the pressure is just right, and white when you need a bit more elbow grease. We appreciate that it has multiple modes, including sensitive and extra sensitive, though you'll need to read through the instructions to know which one you've selected.

The iO Series 5 buzzes every 30 seconds, letting you know to switch quadrants, and according to the manual, it's supposed to stop after two minutes. However, while the light ring turns to a rainbow after two minutes, it doesn't actually shut off on its own. Still, we loved how easy it was to access all areas and angles of the mouth, and our teeth felt exceptionally clean after each brushing session. This toothbrush comes with a countertop charger and a travel case. Though the case doesn't have a built-in charger, the battery lasts up to two weeks, so you might not have to charge it while you're away.

Best Manual Travel Toothbrushes

Best overall, manual, marvis soft toothbrush.

  • Comfort 4.7 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This Italian-made toothbrush boasts a lightweight handle, soft nylon bristles, and a handy head cover for travel.

The bristles aren't contoured like some other manual models.

If you prefer to keep it simple while traveling, a manual toothbrush will suffice. Our favorite packable option is the Marvis White Soft Toothbrush. From the popular luxury toothpaste brand, this Italian-made product features a slim, lightweight acrylic handle. It'll take up minimal space in your toiletry kit and add almost nothing to your luggage weight.

As for the head, you're looking at soft nylon bristles that gently polish your teeth clean. The bristles aren't contoured like some other models, but they definitely get the job done without irritating your gums. We also appreciate that it comes with a head cover to keep it clean and prevent the bristles from crushing in your suitcase.

Curaprox 5460 Ultra Soft Toothbrush, 3 Pack

  • Comfort 5 /5

Each toothbrush has over 5,000 and densely packed, soft bristles that gently polish your teeth without irritating your gums.

They don't come with head covers or a travel case.

For the most bang for your buck, consider this three-pack from Curaprox. These Swiss toothbrushes feature over five thousand densely packed, ultra-soft bristles that promise to gently clean your teeth and protect your gums.

The handles are angled to help you reach every nook and cranny of your mouth. They're also lightweight, which is perfect for travel. Just a heads up, these toothbrushes don't come with head covers, so you'll have to buy those separately.

The Details: Manual | Soft bristles | Slim, lightweight handle

Best Foldable

Lingito folding travel toothbrush.

It folds into itself to become a more packable size while keeping the bristles clean and protected from smushing.

The bristles might not be soft enough for people with sensitive gums.

You might also consider a foldable design, like the Lingito Travel Toothbrush. It folds down into itself, decreasing its size by half. This makes it super travel-friendly while keeping the bristles clean and protecting them from getting smashed.

The grippy handle is easy to hold, and the bristles do an excellent job of cleaning your teeth. Though they might not be soft enough for people with sensitive teeth, the bristles aren't overly stiff or pokey.

The Details: Manual | Medium bristles | Built-in cover

Reach Ultraclean Travel Toothbrush Kit

This handy kit comes with a soft-bristled toothbrush with an antibacterial cap, plus TSA-approved travel-size toothpaste.

The bristles warp pretty quickly.

This on-the-go dental kit comes with a manual toothbrush and a travel-size tube of toothpaste. The toothbrush has soft angled bristles that get into all the contours of your teeth. It also has an antibacterial cap that keeps bacteria at bay while protecting the bristles from getting crushed.

The tiny toothpaste is well below the TSA limit for carry-on liquids, but it should still be enough to get you through about a week of twice-a-day brushing. And the included pouch helps you keep everything organized and accessible.

The Details: Manual | Soft bristles | Disposable with TSA-size toothpaste

Best Disposable

Patelai disposable toothbrushes.

Each toothbrush is individually wrapped, so you'll always have a fresh one to pack for a trip.

They're not as eco-friendly as longer-lasting toothbrushes.

Disposable toothbrushes can come in handy if you travel often. This set comes with 100 or 200 individually wrapped toothbrushes. It includes four colors, so you can differentiate whose is whose when traveling with family members.

Though the toothbrushes don't have caps, you don't really need them. You'll always have a fresh one ready to pack, and you don't have to bother with bringing it home. Of course, this isn't the most eco-friendly option, but it's certainly convenient.

Other Travel Toothbrushes We Liked

Quip Electric Toothbrush : This electric toothbrush is lightweight, easy to hold, and about the size of a manual model. It runs on AAA batteries, so you never have to charge it, but taking it apart to replace the batteries is a bit of a struggle.

Oral-B Smart Limited Rechargeable Toothbrush : This high-tech electric toothbrush makes brushing a fun, enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, the motion sensor on the one we tried was pretty inaccurate, detecting the wrong areas of the mouth and continuously telling us we weren't brushing well enough.

We consulted Marc Schlenoff, DDS, FAGD for tips on selecting travel toothbrushes and guidance for testing them out. Next, we chose upwards of 40 models to try firsthand for an ongoing, six-month testing period. After unboxing the toothbrushes, reading through the instructions, and connecting to the apps (if applicable), we tried them out on our own teeth.

We noted the size and feel of the handles, whether the controls were intuitive, what features were useful (or unnecessary), how the bristles felt on our teeth and gums, and how clean our teeth felt after each session. Each model was rated for ease of use, functionality, portability, quality, and overall value. We featured the highest-scoring toothbrushes here and researched additional travel-friendly options to round out our list.

Tips for Buying a Travel Toothbrush

Decide whether you want something manual or electric.

According to research, electric toothbrushes clean your teeth much better than the manual variety, efficiently polishing away plaque and helping prevent gum disease. Plus, most have built-in timers, which make it easier to brush for the full two minutes, as recommended by dentists. Those with a dedicated dental hygiene routine might want to bring an electric toothbrush on trips, but it's definitely okay to go the manual route for a few days if that makes more sense for packing.

"I've never seen a hotel toothbrush I actually liked," says board-certified endodontist Alexa Martin, DMD, who often travels with an electric model. "Treat yourself and put on a new toothbrush head before you go — it'll feel like a small luxury indulgence."

Choose the right brush head

When buying a travel toothbrush, pay attention to the shape, size, and softness of the brush head. "The bristles should be soft to medium to avoid abrasion of the tooth enamel and gum recession," says Dr. Gonchar, adding that angled bristles help remove plaque around the gum line. "A smaller brush head will allow for easier maneuverability around the back molars and front lower teeth, which are challenging to reach."

Yes, you can take an electric toothbrush on an airplane. Though airlines don't allow spare lithium-ion batteries, it's okay when they're installed within a device — the same goes for things like laptops and massage guns. "Your electric toothbrush can be in your checked bag or your carry-on," says Dr. Martin.

It depends on the type. Manual travel toothbrushes are often just a few dollars, and disposable options can come out to pennies per piece. Electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, often cost $100 or more — sometimes even north of $200.

If you're partial to the electric variety, consider investing in a nice one you can use at home as well as on the go — preferably something with a charging travel case.

You can absolutely use your regular toothbrush on trips. If you have a committed brushing regimen with your electric toothbrush, by all means, bring it with you when you travel. "Make it easy for yourself, and stick to your normal routine," says Dr. Martin.

Most toothbrushes can be used for up to three months (the same goes for the replaceable heads on electric models). However, disposable toothbrushes and other relatively flimsy designs may not hold up as long. Beyond durability, it's important to make sure the bristles stay clean and dry to prevent bacteria growth. This can sometimes be hard when you have to pack your toothbrush right after using it.

If you’re someone who frequently travels, packing and repacking your toothbrush might become an issue. If not packed properly, your toothbrush can come in contact with all the other things in your bag, leaving it filled with germs and all sorts of other matter that you don’t want to end up in your mouth.

Before we dive into our top choices for travel toothbrushes, let’s take a peek at what you should consider in your search for the perfect toothbrush for traveling.

Hundreds of top-tier travel toothbrushes will make maintaining your oral hygiene on the go easier than ever. Before we explore which options are our favorites, let’s look at what should be the determining factors when choosing the perfect travel toothbrush.

Travel toothbrush

Size and portability should be considered first and foremost when choosing the right toothbrush. For example, if you travel with a full-size travel cosmetic bag, you can choose a full-size toothbrush . On the other hand, some travelers prefer a minimalist style of packing. If that’s the case for you, selecting a compact or smaller size may work best for your packing needs.

Manual or Electric

Manual or electric travel toothbrush

If you already have an electric toothbrush at home, you might feel like a manual toothbrush for traveling feels like a downgrade . This is understandable since electric toothbrushes are proven to control tooth decay better.

Hot Tip: Keep in mind that if you’re planning a long-term travel experience, it might be appropriate to pack something that doesn’t need batteries or charging.

Dual Voltage

Even if you’re planning to stay in 1 country on your journey, it’s still a good idea to find a toothbrush that can adjust to different voltages. This is important, especially if you’re traveling to a place that has a higher voltage than what you’re accustomed to.

Some of the newer toothbrushes come with a dual-voltage option that automatically adjusts according to the power outlet they’re plugged into , which makes traveling much easier. If your toothbrush doesn’t have this feature, make sure you pack a voltage converter as well.

Travel toothbrush design

The ever-popular folding travel toothbrush is a travel enthusiast’s favorite . When assembled, the design takes up half the space of a standard-sized toothbrush without sacrificing the comfort of use when fully expanded.

Many of the best folding toothbrushes come with a carrying case that closes tightly to keep your bristles clean and bacteria-free.

The battery is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to electric toothbrushes. Ideally, you want a toothbrush that is rechargeable and can last a week or 2 on a single charge . Battery-operated toothbrushes are not as appealing as rechargeable ones, but they are often cheaper.

Antimicrobial Properties

Picking a toothbrush with antimicrobial properties is key, particularly if you pitch your toothbrush into the depths of your toiletry bag when you come and go.

Antimicrobial strands hinder bacterial growth between uses , keeping your mouth as healthy as possible.

Bristle Variety

Travel toothbrush bristles

There are 3 options for toothbrush bristles: soft, medium, and hard. Most people prefer a medium-bristle toothbrush . If you have a tendency to brush your teeth forcefully, you might want to choose a softer bristle to help protect your gums and enamel.

Pay attention to the bristle material when picking a new travel toothbrush. Nylon bristles are the most common, but if you have sensitive gums, doctors suggest opting for a toothbrush with softer bristles like polyester.

Wherever and whenever you go, a toothbrush (and toothpaste!) is a definite must-have in your carry-on luggage or backpack for travel.

Whenever I travel, I always joke around that I can leave everything else – BUT NOT my toothbrush.

Of course, I’m not okay with leaving my other important travel gear , but you get my point. While picking up a toothbrush at your destination is no big deal, packing one is generally high on everyone’s priority list.

Even though they might be tiny, we at Her Packing List believe that every little bit adds up – even your toiletry kit . If you’re after a more travel-friendly toothbrush option that takes up even less space , we’ve got you covered!

From folding to electric to compact ones, we made sure to include everything in the list – including toothbrush covers to keep your toothbrush clean!

Things to Consider When Buying a Travel Toothbrush

Before you get confused with so many options, there are a few things you need to consider before buying a toothbrush for your next travels.

Here they are:

Bristle firmness and texture

Yes, how toothbrush bristles feel against your mouth matters. There are different firmness and textures of toothbrushes from soft to medium to hard. Unfortunately, a lot of the super compact and low-cost travel toothbrushes can feel pretty harsh on your gums, so choose wisely.

If you have sensitive teeth and gums, soft to medium bristles should be your first choice. Just to be sure, check with your dentist.

Type of travel toothbrush

With plenty of options on the market, you need to decide if you’d go for disposable or reusable travel toothbrushes (which come in a lot of different types, like foldable or compact). While we recommend reusable, there are some interesting disposable toothbrushes that might have a place on certain trips.

You also have the choice to bring an electric toothbrush if you prefer it more than manual options.

Take note that both manual and electric toothbrushes have their own pros and cons. For example, a manual or compact toothbrush requires less maintenance. On the other hand, an electric toothbrush will either require a battery or charge to function.

Toothbrush covers for hygiene

While the idea of stuffing your toothbrush in a plastic or a ziploc bag seems great, it’s actually the worst place to keep them. Why? Bacteria buildup (eww!).

Bacteria likes to grow in wet places and when you’re traveling, using your toothbrush and stuffing it in a plastic bag suffocates them with no room to breathe. When you buy a travel toothbrush, make sure you also buy appropriate covers with holes for ventilation to keep your toothbrush free of bacteria.

Travel-Friendly Toothbrush Options

Now that we’ve talked about the basics, here are the different travel-friendly toothbrushes that you may like for your next travels.

Electric Travel Toothbrushes

Philips one rechargeable toothbrush.

The Philips One electric toothbrush affordable, bulkier than manual and compact toothbrushes, but offer a more satisfying brushing experience.

Inclusions: 1x rechargeable toothbrush, 1x brush head, 1x travel case, 1x Type-C USB charger

Why we like it:

  • Quiet operation
  • Slender handle

What’s not to like: Bulkier and less powerful than regular electric toothbrush

Compared to other electric toothbrushes on the market, the Philips One electric toothbrush is quite affordable. It’s bulkier than manual and compact toothbrushes, but if you want a more satisfying brushing experience this is the one you should buy.

Also, the slender handle of this electric toothbrush makes it easier to brush your teeth. Just note that this is less powerful than regular electric toothbrushes since it’s made for travel.

Pop Sonic Electric Toothbrush

The Pop Sonic electric toothbrush is more packable than the Philips One since it's less bulky.

Inclusions: 1x electric toothbrush, 1x replacement brush head, 1x AAA battery, 1x instruction manual

  • Comes with 2-speed options
  • Ergonomic design

What’s not to like: Soft bristles and gentle brushing may not be for everyone

The Pop Sonic electric toothbrush is more packable than the Philips One since it’s less bulky. The nylon bristles of this toothbrush are good for sensitive gums since they’re soft, but also flexible for hard-to-reach areas.

Overall, using this toothbrush will be like giving your teeth a gentle massage. While that’s a good thing for some, you may not like it if you’re used to giving your teeth a good scrub at the end of the day. It’s all about preference! BUT if you like a cute toothbrush with soft bristles, then this will be perfect.

Quip Adult Electric Toothbrush

The Quip adult electric toothbrush is compact, sleek, and powerful with a built-in tongue scraper.

  • Built-in tongue scraper
  • Sleek and compact design
  • Automatic notification at a 2-minute stop

What’s not to like: Limited color options

The Quip adult electric toothbrush is compact, sleek, and powerful! It’s powerful enough to provide your teeth and mouth with a deep clean feel despite having soft bristles. The added bonus was the built-in tongue scraper! The sleek and compact design makes it easy to hold and is super easy to use.

Compact Travel Toothbrushes

Lingito travel toothbrush.

The Lingito travel toothbrush is very convenient for travel with a compact design and a built-in case that converts into a handle.

Inclusions: 3x toothbrush per pack

  • Convertible built-in case
  • Medium bristle firmness
  • Regular-sized toothbrush

The Lingito travel toothbrush is very convenient for travel since it comes with a built-in case that you can convert into a handle when you use it. This compact design makes it easy to bring this toothbrush in your purse or even your pocket.

A pack comes with three toothbrushes making it one of the most affordable options out there. The only thing you need to be careful with is that since the handle becomes a fully enclosed case, you need to make sure that your toothbrush is dry before you pack it up to avoid bacteria buildup.

Heinenand Travel Toothbrush

The Heinenand travel toothbrush is multi-functional as a toothbrush, a floss, a toothpick, and a tongue scraper in one.

Inclusions: 10x or 20x toothbrushes per pack

  • 4-in-1 toothbrush
  • Environmentally friendly as it’s made from wheat straw

What’s not to like: Too small for some and ultra-soft bristles are not for everyone.

Similar to the Colgate Max Fresh Wisp toothbrush, the Heinenand travel toothbrush works as a convenient toothbrush that is multi-functional.

You can buy this for a pack of 10 or 20 and you get a toothbrush, a floss, toothpick, and a tongue scraper in one. It’s a convenient way to keep your teeth and mouth clean overall. What makes this toothbrush even better is that it’s nature-friendly being made from biodegradable materials.

Prony 3in1 Portable Travel Toothbrush

The Prony 3in1 portable toothbrush comes with a toothpaste tube so you don’t have to worry about bringing a full tube of toothpaste.

Inclusions: 1x foldable toothbrush and 1x free cleaning brush

  • 3in1 kit (toothbrush, travel case, and toothpaste tube)
  • replaceable toothbrush head
  • FREE cleaning brush

What’s not to like: No ventilation holes

The Prony 3in1 portable toothbrush is almost perfect for a folding toothbrush – except it lacks any ventilation holes. But missing ventilation hole aside, it’s a good travel toothbrush with a toothpaste tube so you don’t have to worry about bringing a full tube of toothpaste.

Plus, there’s an included cleaning brush for cleaning the toothpaste end. Just make sure to keep it out for as long as you can to let it dry before putting it away.

Folding Travel Toothbrushes

Gum folding toothbrush.

The GUM folding travel toothbrush has a space-saving tri-fold design where the bristles fold into the handle.

Inclusions: Pack of 2 toothbrushes

  • Tri-fold design
  • Antibacterial bristles

As folding toothbrushes go, the GUM folding travel toothbrush is on a whole new level. Aside from its space-saving tri-fold design where the bristles fold into the handle, this toothbrush also uses hygienic-treated bristles to keep it clean.

Plus, there’s a tiny hole to air out any leftover moisture to make sure your toothbrush is free of mold and any possible bacteria buildup from being wet.

Radius Tour Travel Toothbrush

The Radius Tour travel toothbrush is a compact option with a unique hideaway feature and 3x more bristles for better cleaning.

Inclusion: Pack of 3 toothbrushes

  • Slim neck and jack knife design
  • 3x more bristles than the average toothbrush
  • Sustainable and eco-friendly materials

What’s not to like: Too soft bristles may not feel as effective at cleaning your teeth

Radius is a small business owned by women and they definitely know what a woman needs when packing light . The unique hideaway feature of the Radius Tour travel toothbrush makes it very compact. They have 3x more bristles (that are vegetable-derived) for better cleaning and the heads are replaceable, which saves you more compared to just buying a whole new toothbrush.

Lingito Folding Travel Toothbrush

The Lingito travel toothbrush is lightweight and compact with a solid grip handle, folds up nicely, and cleans up well with medium-soft bristles.

  • Firm grip handle
  • No need for a loose cover
  • Budget-friendly option

What’s not to like: Limited color choices

As a folding toothbrush, the Lingito travel toothbrush is pretty straightforward. It comes with a solid grip handle, folds up nicely, and cleans up well with medium-soft bristles. It’s lightweight and compact and you don’t need any additional toothbrush cover since the toothbrush head folds into the handle.

Brooke has this folding toothbrush and likes that it makes packing a toothbrush into her Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Cube – that she uses as a toiletry bag – so much easier!

Travel Toothbrush Kits

Colgate max fresh wisp disposable mini toothbrush.

The Colgate Max Fresh Wisp disposable toothbrush is a toothbrush and a toothpick in one with built-in toothpaste (freshening beads) that dissolve once you use it.

Inclusions: 24x disposable mini toothbrush

  • No rinsing necessary
  • Brush and go
  • Built-in toothpaste bead
  • Can also be used as a toothpick

What’s not to like: Too small for some, and it’s disposable.

If you’re looking for a quick way to clean your teeth on the go, the Colgate Max Fresh Wisp disposable toothbrush should be in your toiletries. It’s a toothbrush and a toothpick in one with built-in toothpaste (freshening beads) that dissolve once you use it. That’s right… no need to practice those toothpaste packing hacks with this brush option.

This is convenient when you don’t have easy access to water and you need a convenient way to clean your teeth. It can also be nice for those quick overnight trips – you won’t have to pack much, not even toothpaste!

Crest Scope Mini Toothbrush

The Crest Scope mini toothbrushes are a lot similar to the Colgate Max Fresh Wisp disposable toothbrushes, but with thick and stiff bristles.

Inclusions: 12x mini toothbrush

  • Multi-ridge tongue cleaner
  • Interdental pick

What’s not to like: Not the most durable travel toothbrush, and it’s intended for single-use

The Crest Scope mini toothbrushes are a lot similar to the Colgate Max Fresh Wisp disposable toothbrushes. But where the Colgate Max Fresh wisp has softer bristles, the Crest Scope has thick and stiff bristles. This can make brushing your teeth feel uncomfortable especially if you have sensitive teeth and gums. It’s a good travel toothbrush for a quick clean, perhaps nice for camping, but it is not the most durable option.

Reach Oral Kit

The Reach Oral Kit is a complete dental kit, but doesn’t fold which may not be the most compact option.

Inclusions: 1x toothbrush, 1x Crest 3D White Luxe Whitening Toothpaste, 1x toothbrush cap, 1x mini floss container

  • Complete oral hygiene kit
  • Easy kit to buy and pack without thinking

What’s not to like: Not the most compact option

If you’re a fan of a complete oral kit, this would be a good choice. However, it might not be your best choice if you’re looking for a compact option since the toothbrush doesn’t fold and you need to find more space for it plus the toothpaste that comes with it.

Colgate Travel Kit

The Colgate Travel Kit comes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a travel-friendly toothpaste tube.

Inclusions: 1x toothbrush, 1x Toothpaste

  • Value pack toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Convertible handle as toothbrush case

What’s not to like: No ventilation holes on toothbrush case

The Colgate Travel Kit comes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a travel-friendly toothpaste tube. The toothbrush case can be converted as the handle which makes it very compact. The only downside is the lack of a ventilation hole when storing the toothbrush.

Brushee 3in1 Oral Care Tool

The Brushee 3in1 Oral Care kit is a pocket-sized toothbrush for quick and easy oral hygiene when you are on the go.

Inclusions: 24x pre-pasted mini toothbrushes with dental floss and toothpick

  • Value pack multifunction oral kit

What’s not to like: Too small and may not be the most eco-friendly option

The Brushee 3in1 Oral Care kit is a pocket-sized toothbrush for quick and easy oral hygiene when you are on the go. The brush has medium bristles, but the dental pick may be a bit challenging to use since it’s short and very sharp so you need to be careful.

Toothbrush Accessories

The Steripod Clip-On Toothbrush Protector is an an easy clip-on cover infused with peppermint essential oil.

best-electric-toothbrush-for-travel

You love your electric toothbrush – but how do you handle all those cords when you’re on the go?

I’ve been a big fan of electric toothbrushes ever since I set my molars on my Phillips Sonicare toothbrush.

However, lately I’ve been traveling a lot and have found that the Sonicare’s fairly bulky design, along with the wall charger I need for longer trips, have become quite impractical.

Using manual toothbrushes after being such a die-hard electric endorser feels strange – I never feel I’m getting my teeth as clean as I should. I wanted a compact design I could take on my travels.

Tooth technology has come a long way, and I’m happy to say that after our research we’ve found a nice variety of quality electric toothbrushes that are slim and compact enough for travel.

Today we’re exploring all your options when it comes to travel electric toothbrushes – we’ll talk about features to look for and review a few top pick suggestions.

See our quick picks to get right to the good stuff, or continue reading for our full reviews!

Things to Consider When Shopping For a Travel Electric Toothbrush:

Weight. Naturally, the slimmer the better, and usually lighter is better too. However, with some products, users note that having a toothbrush that is too light gives the device a cheap toy feel. Ideally, you want a toothbrush that is light enough to be convenient but has at least a bit of weight to give it substance and add some durability.

Battery vs Wall Charger. Most traditional electric toothbrushes feature rechargeable batteries, but this can be impractical for travel. Rechargeable batteries are still doable if the charge can last a very long time, but if you’re traveling for months at a time, this will be hard to come by. Luckily, there are some great slim electric toothbrushes on the market that can last a very long time with just a single AA battery.

Timers . One of my favorite features of my Sonicare brush is the pulsing timer than vibrates every 30 seconds, reminding me to brush another section of teeth and keeping lazy brushers like myself to the 2-minute rule. Some travel toothbrushes lack these extra bells and whistles, but if it’s important to you, seek out the ones that have great features like these.

1. Phillips Sonicare Battery-Powered Toothbrush

The Phillips Sonicare HX3631 takes one of the most popular electric toothbrush brands and introduces a travel-friendly, battery-operated model.

This model measures in at 1 x 1 x 7 inches, and weighs about 4 ounces.

This brush has the features you’d expect in a Sonicare – a built-in 2-minute timer to ensure you’re brushing the right amount of time, an ergonomic handle, and 15,000 brushstrokes per minute, promising perfect pearly whites.

Phillips also claims that this brush has been clinically proven to be safe for folks with braces, fillings, crowns, veneers, etc. so you can rest easy when you brush.

Philips Sonicare HX3631/06 Powerup Battery Toothbrush, Medium, Scuba Blue

  • Better check-ups Guaranteed Sonic Technology removes more plaque than a manual toothbrush
  • Helps reduce cavities and whitens teeth
  • 2 minute timer helps ensure recommended brushing time
  • 2 AA Batteries Included
  • #1 Recommended brand by dental professionals

PROS: Advocates love that they finally have an electric toothbrush that is light enough for travel, offers a great teeth cleaning, and does away with cumbersome cords.

CONS: One unhappy owner notes that this toothbrush feels like it makes his entire head vibrate, and yet he still doesn’t feel his teeth are satisfyingly cleaned.

Quip has been quite the social media darling, and it’s pretty easy to stumble upon one of their stylish ads on Instagram.

Reviews are generally positive, but some folks aren’t too happy with Quip’s cheaper plastic models, claiming that the toothbrushes feel too light. Most happy customers are those who opted for the metal finish models.

Quip takes the cake when it comes to style – its sleek design (especially the metal models) makes it feel like it would look at home next to an iPhone . Quip’s electric toothbrush runs on a single AAA battery, and can last for months at a time without losing juice.

Quip prides itself on including all the features you need in a toothbrush, without any extra gimmicks. It has a handy 2-minute timer, with 30-second pulse intervals to remind you to switch teeth quadrants.

This unit is super slim and very convenient for travel, especially considering its handy travel cover that also doubles as a wall mount (and not the sticky kind that can be used once – this wall mount can be suctioned and removed from multiple spots).

Quip also comes with a brush head subscription plan, delivering fresh brush heads to your home on a set schedule to ensure that you’re brushing most effectively and with clean bristles.

quip toothbrush

PROS: Quip is slim, sleek, and a very convenient design for travel. It feels nice to hold, and the built-in timer is a nice added touch.

CONS : I own a Quip and have to say, I continually question its effectiveness. The vibration is so gentle compared to my home Sonicare brush that it’s offputting. Still, my teeth do seem to get clean, but I don’t have that sense of really getting all the gunk scraped off that I do with my Sonicare.

While the Quip looks great, it still has some major design flaws. The rounded bottom means the toothbrush can’t stand on its own (something I’ve become accustomed to with other electric toothbrushes).

At the same time, resting the toothbrush horizontally on a sink countertop feels strange because opposite side of the brush is a tongue cleaner. The raised tongue cleaner surface means that the toothbrush is constantly rolling to one side or the other and won’t stay upright.

I still use my Quip for traveling and overnights, but I’ve found that at home I prefer to go back to my Sonicare.

Update: I’ve been using my quip for over a year now and despite my initial reservations, it’s become my full-time toothbrush. My dentist seemed happy with my dental hygiene last time I visited, so I’ll continue using Quip. I’m on the go a lot, and it’s nice to have a toothpaste that is so easy to pack up and take on the go, plus it takes up a lot less space than my old Sonicare brush.

I also have to say, I love the auto-shipment of brush heads. I used to have to remind myself to get on Amazon and order Sonicare brush head replacements every few months, but I don’t need to worry about that with Quip’s auto brush head refills, and it’s always fun to see those shiny packages with my new brush head in the mail!

It’s not perfect – I’ve found that gunk gets stuck at the bottom of the holder / travel carrier, so I have to use a bottle brush to clean it. But largely, Quip has really grown on me!

3. Oral-B Black Pro Rechargeable Toothbrush

The Oral-B Black Pro is a sophisticated electric toothbrush with some impressive bells and whistles, all while being

Oral-B’s pride and joy is the unit’s “CrossAction brush head,” featuring a circular brush that has bristles angled at 16 degrees, designed to get in deeper between teeth and around gums. The CrossAction brush rotates, oscillates, and pulsates to remove additional plaque along the gumline.

Oral-B Black Pro also has a unique pressure sensor that will stop pulsations if it recognizes that you are brushing too hard (a nice bonus if you’ve already been chastised by your dentist for hard brushing).

This unit also features an in-handle timer that ensures you brush for the dentist-recommended full 2 minutes. The timer also uses a 30-second pulsing timer to remind you to switch to the next section of teeth.

This unit uses a rechargeable battery, but claims to hold a charge for 7 days, so it should still function well for the occasional short-trip traveler.

Oral-B Pro 1000 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, Black

  • REMOVE UP TO 100% MORE PLAQUE* along the gumline whilst PROTECTING GUMS with our dentist-inspired round brush head technology *vs. a manual toothbrush
  • PROTECT YOUR GUMS with sensi cleaning mode and GUM PRESSURE CONTROL that automatically stops brush pulsations when brushing too hard
  • MAXIMIZE CLEANING performance with 3 EASY-TO-USE CLEANING MODES + handle-integrated quadrant timer that alerts you every 30sec to change brushing zone
  • PERSONALIZE & LEVEL-UP YOUR CLEAN with Oral-B BRUSH HEADS AVAILABLE* for YOUR individual needs: e.g., deep clean, gentle clean, whitening *for purchase
  • Oral-B ROUND brush heads REACH WHERE RECTANGULAR manual brushes DON'T. Experience a better clean from the #1 brand most used by dentists worldwide

PROS : Most users are very happy with the Oral-B Black Pro and feel that their teeth are getting a good solid cleaning. Folks also appreciate the built-in timer.

CONS: Some users expressed the wish to have replaceable batteries so that the unit doesn’t have to be trashed when the lithium-ion batteries die (which they inevitably do at some point over the years).

VioLife is an affordable line of portable electric toothbrushes that are charged by AAA batteries. It’s a bit on the basic side – it doesn’t have a built-in timer – but we still think it’s a worthy travel brush.

VioLife puts an emphasis on a slim and portable – at .8 x .8 x 6.2 inches and weighing 1.9 ounces, it’s quite small indeed.

VioLife also features a snap-on mascara-style vented travel cap that makes it easy to bring your brush wherever you go.

Unit comes with 2 brush heads, and the VioLife handles come in a variety of styles and patterns so you can choose a look all your own.

PROS: Most folks appreciate the VioLife as an ultra-compact, on-the-go brush great for the occasional trip or to keep at the office, but most agree they wouldn’t use it as their primary toothbrush.

CONS: Some users note that this brush feels cheaps and not as sturdy as other electric toothbrushes. Some question how powerful the brush is as well.

5. Oral-B 3D White Battery Powered Toothbrush

The Oral-B 3D White is definitely the most affordable brush on this list, putting it within basically anyone’s budget. There’s only one speed, and while the bristles are fine, they aren’t anything special. They are designed with medium pressure bristles, which may be too hard for some.

This unit certainly lacks bonus features like a built-in timer or travel-handy covers. Still, at 1.3 x 1.3 x 9.4 inches and weighing at 3 ounces, it’s a fine contender for your travel toothbrush companion.

There’s no travel case for this toothbrush, so you’ll need to find your own way to keep the top clean during travels. There are options for replacing brushes, but they can be a bit hard to come by if you don’t order them online. The batteries are also replaceable, using AA batteries that are easy to come by.

While these are probably still more effective than standard toothbrushes, you can do a lot better when it comes to electric travel toothbrushes. The vibrations aren’t as tight or fast as they are with higher-end models, and most agree that they aren’t as effective at cleaning teeth.

Still, for a short trip out of town, Oral-B 3D White isn’t the worst option out there!

Oral-B Battery Powered Complete Action Anti-Microbial Power Toothbrush 1 Count

  • Cleans hard-to-reach places.^Rotating Powerhead: Loosens and whisks away plaque from surfaces, gumline and back teeth.^CrissCross Bristles: Reach deep between teeth to lift out and sweep away plaque.^Delivers more cleaning action than the leading manual toothbrush.^Replaceable Brush Head.

PROS: Super affordable, it’s a portable electric toothbrush any budget can handle.

CONS: No timer, and some claim the vibrations are actually too strong and can hurt your gums if you’re used to softer bristles. Some note that the unit feels cheap and flimsy in general.

Can You Use a Travel Adapter for an Electric Toothbrush?

Many digital nomads wonder if they can use their electric toothbrush with a travel adapter if they have to plug it in to charge it. The answer depends on the type of toothbrush you have and its voltage.

For example, the voltage in the United States is much lower than in European countries. Therefore, items like hairdryers blow out due to the voltage difference.

One solution is to purchase a travel adapter and voltage converter . This allows you to use your own items in different countries with different voltages and outlets – saving you a ton of money if you’re traveling full-time!

So the answer is yes, you can use a travel adapter for your electric toothbrush, but only if it is also a voltage converter as well . Otherwise, you can have a very dangerous problem.

13 Best Electric Toothbrushes For Travel

These days, there are many options for the best electric toothbrush for travel available out there. All of them promise superior cleaning power over manual solutions. From a traveler’s point of view, this is great. It’s a way to maintain oral health that doesn’t take much time during our trips. This means you can focus more on planning an itinerary, doing research for accommodations, and other things you need to do to make your traveling experience impeccable.

The travel electric toothbrush offers all the basic features of its regular counterpart. The difference is, it comes in a compact package that’s easy to carry around and doesn’t take up much space in your suitcase or bag. Additionally, these devices usually come with a USB cable and a rechargeable battery.

But with so many options out there, where should you start? Well, to help you decide, we’ve put together a list of the 13 best electric toothbrushes for travel. But before that, here are some useful tips you need to know first.

How to Choose The Best Electric Toothbrush for Travel

While they all offer similar basic functionality, there are some extra features that you might want to check out. We’re talking about stroke motion, brush heads, cleaning modes, timers, and more. All of these things are very important because they will affect the level of comfort, especially for those who have sensitive teeth and gums. You definitely don’t want to experience bleeding gums on vacation, do you? So without further ado, here are a few factors you should consider in choosing your best electric toothbrush for travel.

Stroke Motion

You can choose between rotating/oscillating and sonic/ultrasonic. The former can produce up to 7,500 brush strokes per minute. It runs in a circle, making it easy to remove plaque from any angle.

Meanwhile, those with sonic/ultrasonic can produce 5,000 brush strokes per minute, along with vibrations that move the head back and forth. While this keeps plaque away, it’s not recommended for those with sensitive teeth.

Those with sensitive teeth should use an electric toothbrush head with an extra soft bristle texture. While for those whose teeth don’t need extra care, soft or medium ones will do. On the other hand, you also need to consider the size of the brush head. For example, little kids will be more comfortable using smaller ones.

Some electric toothbrushes come with a timer that lets you know how long you’ve been brushing your teeth. This way you can ensure that you’ve carried out your dental routine for no less than two minutes, as recommended by dentists. Talk about convenience!

Cleaning Mode

For extra cleanliness, you might want to check out the electric toothbrush that comes with high speed, polish, and whitening modes. Others offer an adjustment option for mild brushing, which is perfect for those with sensitive teeth. Afterall, there’s no harm in optimizing your dental health. So, you might want to consider buying an electric power flosser , too.

I hate brushing my teeth. I do it because I have to, but it’s a time-consuming, uncomfortable process—two minutes standing in front of the mirror can feel like an eternity. My dentist says I brush too harshly as well. Don't even get me started on flossing.

Electric toothbrushes make the whole experience easier. Their vibrations and oscillations can more effectively get rid of plaque on your teeth and gums, and most brushes have a timer that encourages you to brush for the full two minutes. We've tested many types, from basic models to fancy ones with oscillating brushes and everything in between. A good brush doesn't need to cost you more than a few Hamiltons. Listed below are the best electric toothbrushes you can buy. We also have eco-friendly non-electric options if you don't want to own another device that needs charging.

There is a seemingly endless array of electric toothbrushes to pick from, but they generally fall into two categories: sonic and oscillating (for U-shaped brushes, see below). The best toothbrush is the one you'll use twice a day for two minutes. You can buy the most highly rated toothbrush around, but if it feels weird in your mouth or hurts your gums, you might not want to use it.

Ada S. Cooper, a dentist and consumer adviser spokesperson for the American Dental Association , told me that both styles are effective in reducing plaque, according to recent studies. She notes that you should talk to a dentist about which one will work best for you, and she says to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance Most of our picks have it. (If they don't, that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad.)

  • A sonic toothbrush looks similar to a manual brush, with an oval brush head. It vibrates gently and quietly, using high-speed side-to-side bristle motion to break up plaque. Sonicare was the first brand to introduce a sonic toothbrush and is probably the most well-known name in the category.
  • Oscillating toothbrushes rotate and pulsate—oscillate means to move or swing back and forth—around the whole tooth. They tend to be louder than sonic brushes and might make your head vibrate more while you brush. You will get used to this if you're new to electric brushes. Oral-B is probably the best-known brand for these types of electric toothbrushes.

Updated March 2024: We've added the Be Lucent Prism and Made By Dentists sonic toothbrushes. We've also moved the Goby brush to the honorable mentions, as customers are having issues getting replacement heads.

Christopher Null's reporting contributed to this guide.

Best Oscillating Brush

Oral-B's Pro 1000 is a reliable brush for a solid price that you can pick up at most stores. It has been around for a while and continues to outshine more expensive models with fancier features. It's so powerful that my first few brushes left me feeling dizzy. Battery life isn't as long as pricier ones, but you should still get around 10 days. All brushes get grimy from toothpaste, but I felt like this one somehow got a little more gross. Just rinse it thoroughly after every brush.

All the brand's electric toothbrushes have oscillating brush heads , which are those circular bristles that get right in between all your teeth. Though we haven't tried all of them, most of the Pro models are probably a good bet if the price is right for you.

Best Sonic Brush

If you find oscillating brushes to be too intense, you may prefer a sonic brush. You'll probably like any of Sonicare's brushes, but it comes down to features and price. At $50, the 4100 is a good mid-range brush with two intensity levels, a pressure sensor, and a two-minute timer. It does what it needs to do without a bunch of unnecessary bells and whistles and a charge should last about two weeks.

I've tried the very expensive Sonicare brushes that we mention in the honorable mentions below. They're also great cleaners, but you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars when good brushes from the brand are this price.

Best Smart Toothbrush

If you want a smart electric toothbrush, the Colgate Hum ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) sonic brush is our favorite. It's slim and light, with a small brush head that can reach the back of your mouth without causing discomfort. It connects to a companion mobile app that offers insight into your habits too. The Hum costs significantly less than most app-connected brushes, and the mobile app's features are superior to its competitors.

The system accurately tracks your brushing and shows you spots you've missed. You don't have to open the app every time you brush your teeth, as your brushing sessions are stored on the brush for 10 days (they get uploaded to your phone when you open the app). Battery life is around 10 days, which is fine but not as long as other smart brushes. The biggest downside is the Hum only has one type of brush head, so you can't swap out different heads made for sensitive teeth or more powerful cleaning.

★ A cheaper alternative: The Hum Smart Rhythm for $25 is a battery-powered brush with two cleaning modes. (The regular Hum has three.) It has less cleaning power overall, but it makes for a great first electric brush for a kid.

This One Auto-Starts

The Prism sonic toothbrush took one feature from manual brushing that other brands haven't figured out: Just put it in your mouth and brush to start the vibrations automatically. No button pressing needed. It cleans well, too, and the back of the head has the best tongue cleaner of any brush I've tried. It's rough enough to really scrub.

Don't worry, there is a button for controlling the modes or manually turning it on and off. It took me a few times to stop the automatic gesture of pushing it I'd developed from years without an automatic brush. The charging dock is also fun. It reminds me of an ’80s glass block wall , and I mean that as a compliment. (I want to build one of these in my house.)

Bitvae Sonic Toothbrush

A Cheap Electric Toothbrush

I wasn't sure what to expect from this brand I'd never heard of, but Bitvae's sonic toothbrush was powerful and cleaned my teeth effectively. It also comes with eight (!!) replacement heads and typically costs just $16 to $18—if you're seeing it for more, consider waiting for the price to drop. There are a bunch of cute colors to choose from, too.

The worst thing about it is its charger. Most electric toothbrushes sit on a charging base, but this one has to be plugged in directly from the bottom of the handle. So you either have to lay your brush down sideways on the sink while it charges or stick the included holder to the wall. I don't particularly like having to do that.

SoniCare for Kids toothbrush

A Brush for Kids

You don't necessarily need a kid-specific toothbrush, but this is a well-priced rechargeable option. The companion app is filled with cartoon lessons and rewards, and your kids can monitor progress even when they aren't viewing the app in real time (so you don't have to be in the bathroom with them).

WIRED senior writer and reviewer Scott Gilbertson had his 8-year-old give it a try, and the two-minute timer kept her brushing until it was done—no shortcuts. She eventually lost interest in the app, but younger kids may stick with it longer. Even without the app keeping his kid's attention, he said he would still purchase this brush. Plus, the battery lasted through nearly three months of daily use. It comes with stickers to customize the handle, though in Gilbertson's experience, they didn't stick for long.

SURI Sustainable Electric Toothbrush 4 on a grey stand next to a plant

A Repairable, Sustainable Brush

The Suri toothbrush's soft bristles and gentle vibrations clean well, and even the most sensitive gums won't suffer in the process. I also appreciate the slim, lightweight handle. Beyond clean teeth, the company offers a more sustainable approach to electric brushes.

You need to brush your teeth, which means you're going to throw brushes away eventually. Electric toothbrushes are less wasteful than nonelectric models in the short term since you don't have to throw away the entire thing every time you're done with it. But electric brushes have an expiration date too, as their batteries and motors will eventually give out. Suri wants to offer a more sustainable approach. It takes back and recycles used brush heads (made from cornstarch with castor oil bristles that should break down without leaving microplastics behind). The body of the brush isn't sealed, meaning the company can repair the battery or motor should the need arise. If you decide you don't want it repaired and simply want to get rid of it, you can send it back to be recycled .

Snow LED Electric Toothbrush

This One Uses LEDs

Snow started out with a handful of whitening products, and has rounded out its lineup with a toothbrush that has LEDs right in the brush head. They typically work in conjunction with a gel. When I spoke to Bill Busch, a dentist at North Kansas City Dental, he explained that LEDs work by warming the toothpaste gel, which makes it more efficient. To get the full effect, you'll want to use a whitening toothpaste too. Snow sells one , but any should be fine.

My teeth aren't shining bright after a month of use, but they are clean. The battery lasts a while, so you won't be caught with a dead battery in the morning. My biggest complaint was the price, which was $149 when we first tried it, but it's dropped now.

MOON x Barbie toothbrush and toothpaste on a cloudy sky backdrop

For Living in a Barbie World

We tried Moon's toothbrush for our roundup of the best Barbie collabs . Whether you want this pink version or one of the other colors like black or gold, it's a solid brush that cleans well and is moderately priced. Plus, a charge should give you over a month of battery life.

There are five cleaning modes. It's nice to have options, but I tend to think anything over two or three is overkill, and you won't notice much of a difference between them. Moon's brush comes with two brush heads plus a travel case.

SmileDirect water flosser

Try a Water Flosser Too

If you go to the dentist regularly, you have probably fibbed once—or 100—times: Yes, doctor, I have been flossing regularly . For something that is so simple, it's also annoying and sometimes makes your mouth bleed, and you have to squeeze your hands all the way to the back of your mouth. Water flossing is a good alternative. Though it's not a substitute for regular string floss, it's better than nothing or for use in between.

There are a lot of water flossers available, but most that I've seen are big, requiring a chunk of your sink space. This one from SmileDirectClub is small because its tank is right on its body. (The company has an even smaller pop-up version we didn't try.) It really did get the gunk out of my teeth that my toothbrush couldn't. Water flossing does hurt at first, unfortunately, so start with the soft-pressure setting.

★  Note: We're testing more water flossers! Stay tuned for a new guide with more options.

Better and Better Bamboo Sonic Toothbrush and Head next to a plant in a vase

Honorable Mentions

There are far more electric toothbrushes than we can recommend in a single guide. If none of the above options appeal to you, one of these might do the trick.

Brushes Under $100

  • Philips One by Sonicare Toothbrush for $25 : This was our budget pick, but Bitvae's is more powerful, rechargeable, and cheaper. Still, this one is cute, thin, and offers gentle vibrations for a step above a manual brush. It also comes with a carrying case.
  • AquaSonic Black Series for $40 : This brush also comes with eight brush heads, like the Bitvae above, which is nice for the price. I think it cleans well, but the heads are a bit small, and the whole thing was too vibratey for me, like the body was vibrating the plastic of the brush head more than the bristles.
  • Quip Toothbrushes for $25-$60 : People either love or hate Quip brushes. They aren't the most powerful, but they're comfortable to use, easy to maneuver around your mouth, and importantly, affordable. Choose between plastic or metal handles, battery-powered or rechargeable , all of which have smart or regular-brained options. If you have the basic brush and decide you want Bluetooth, you can swap out your motor for a smart one for $25. No other brush I've seen has this option.
  • Better & Better Bamboo Sonic Toothbrush for $70 : This is another great brush that doesn't exceed the $100 mark. The entire thing isn't made from bamboo, but the brush heads—which get swapped out more frequently than the actual body—are. That makes it a little more eco-friendly.
  • SmileDirectClub Electric Toothbrush for $15 : We think you'll like this one as much as the Philips One—they're similar, but the SmileDirectClub is just slightly bigger and has more coarse bristles, which you may prefer.
  • Goby Electric Toothbrush for $90 : Goby's modern brush was a top pick. It's lightweight and cleans well, with a two-week battery life and a nice stand with a charger that clips onto it when it needs some juice. However, customers are complaining that they can no longer get replacement brush heads despite paying for them. The company told us it should be back to normal soon. We'll continue to monitor it.

Brushes Over $100

  • Made by Dentists Sonic Toothbrush for $100 : This sonic brush is, you guessed it, designed by two dentists. It cleans well, and it's lightweight with a long battery life. But it sounds and feels a little tinny, and it's a bit pricey for what it is.
  • Oral-B iO Brushes : I tried the iO Series 8 in 2020 and wasn't a fan of the app or the price. In 2021, Oral-B released the slightly less expensive Series 6 for $150 , which is the fourth of the iO lineup, with five cleaning modes. It's a fantastic brush in terms of cleaning, but other brushes have better apps. I found the tracking to be much better while I brushed, but I would occasionally see my post-brushing coverage stat as 0 percent. It's just clunky. Get a basic Oral-B for great cleaning power.
  • Mode Electric Toothbrush for $148 : Mode's bristles are soft, but not too soft. The round charging block plugs directly into the outlet, and the brush handle attaches to it magnetically—plus it can rotate so you don't block the other outlet, and there's a dim nightlight. The only problem is the high price.
  • Izzo Oral Care Kit for $125 : This is a powerful oscillating brush with three speeds. The kit comes with a plastic tooth scaler, a polishing attachment and polishing paste, and a UVC sanitizing case. At first, I found that the polishing paste got hard in its tube quickly and was a bit of a nuisance to use after a few times. The company changed its formula, and it seems to be holding up better now.
  • Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9300 for $225 : This is a great toothbrush as far as cleaning abilities and comfort, but its smart features leave something to be desired. As with the Oral-B iO, I couldn't get the app to accurately track my brushing sessions. Plus, it's too expensive.
  • Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige for $324 : Like the Sonicare above, the 9900 Prestige is a great toothbrush, and it has SenseIQ that detects pressure and changes the intensity if you're pushing too hard. That's helpful for me because I tend to scrub too hard, but that isn't a good enough reason for me to spend this kind of cash on a toothbrush.
  • Oclean X Pro Digital for $110 and X Pro Elite for $150 : Oclean brushes give a satisfying clean, and the little screen on the handle shows a chart of which teeth you've cleaned or missed without having to look at your phone. That screen can be kind of a pain to scroll through though.

Preserve toothbrush

Normal, Non-Electric Brushes

Electric toothbrushes have their perks: They can help you get a deeper clean, they (usually) come equipped with a two-minute timer to ensure you're brushing long enough, and they create less waste since you're only throwing away a brush head. Disposable plastic lingers in a landfill forever. However, we've found a few planet-friendly alternatives for more traditional toothbrushing.

  • Colgate Keep for $7 : This Colgate brush is designed with less plastic than traditional toothbrushes, partly because most of its handle is made of aluminum. The handle is sturdy and cool in your hand, and only the brush head needs to be replaced. The starter kit comes with a handle and two brush heads. A two-pack of brush heads is $6 , or around $8 for four .
  • Bite's Bamboo Brush for $12 (Two-Pack) : Unlike plastic, bamboo is biodegradable. There are many bamboo options out there, but Bite's brush is the best one I've tried. The brush head comes apart for travel.
  • Preserve Toothbrush for $4 : This toothbrush sits at an extreme angle that feels surprisingly natural as you brush. The handle is made of 100 percent recycled plastics, and you can mail your used brush back to the company so it can be recycled again. It's dirt cheap, too.
  • Bogobrush for $10 : This one is also made of recycled plastic and comes with a nice little stand you can stick to your bathroom sink or counter.

Willo Electric Toothbrush machine

What About Alternative Toothbrushes?

There are many U-shaped toothbrushes available now that use a mouthpiece full of bristles to brush one section of teeth—or sometimes the entire mouth—all at once in around 30 seconds. We've tried three and think they're fine to use in addition to regular brushing, like for those nights when you just want to hit the sheets or your kids are being difficult. None of them left us feeling perfectly minty fresh and none can clean your tongue. We'll continue trying more as they're released.

  • AutoBrush Sonic Pro for $119 : AutoBrush is the original in the category, and I tried both the old silicone-bristle model and new nylon version. I wasn't wowed by either, but if you want a U-shaped brush and can get this one on sale, try it. You can read about AutoBrush's study with Salus Research here .
  • SymplBrush for $149 : WIRED reviewer Brenda Stolyar has been using the SymplBrush, which looks like a mix of the Willo and AutoBrush, and she likes it. “I can tell it hits each tooth and each side of it that might be missed with a standard toothbrush,” she says. “It's a nice, all-around, clean-type feeling.” But she notes that it didn't always get the buildup around her gums, so she'd have to go in with a brush anyway. As someone who brushes too hard, she felt this offered a gentler experience for her gums. However, Stolyar didn't like the toothpaste it came with, and thankfully, her regular toothpaste worked fine though she had to spend extra time to keep the brush clean.
  • Willo Essential Kit for $150 : This was my favorite and left my mouth feeling cleanest. It works by pushing water and tooth rinse through the mouthpiece as it pulsates. However, the site is currently down with a note that says Willo is “busy working on building a better oral health future for our children.” We'll see what new products are coming.

The dentists I spoke to, Bill Busch of North Kansas City Dental and Joseph Salim, owner of Sutton Place Dental Associates , agreed that these aren't replacements. At the time we spoke, they and their patients had used the older, now unavailable silicone version of the AutoBrush. The current iteration uses nylon bristles. “I find the best use for it is for children and in nursing home environments, where to get quick and easy compliance to brush is critical," Busch says.

Person's hands holding Quip refillable floss container

Consider These Brushing Accessories

In addition to a good toothbrush, you'll need a few other things to keep your mouth clean.

  • Quip Refillable Floss for $15-20 : I prefer floss picks to a string, but disposable ones are a huge waste. Quip's refillable pick solves this, but it's still easy to use and the small container can go wherever you do.
  • Tongue Scraper for $10 : You can brush your teeth efficiently twice a day, but you'll never feel fully fresh if you ignore your tongue. You don't need to buy a tongue scraper, but I find it makes the process of cleaning your tongue more bearable than using a brush. Just rinse it thoroughly between uses. Plastic ones don't do as good a job as metal ones.

  • Things to Consider

If you are planning to buy a travel-friendly electric toothbrush, chances are that you are baffled by the numerous choices available. It can be difficult to narrow down the options and zero in on the product that is ideal for you. We have compiled this buying guide to help you make the correct decision. We will discuss the important factors that we took into consideration when reviewing all the toothbrushes so that you can fix your priorities.

Features that make an electric toothbrush suitable for travel

If you want to determine whether an electric toothbrush is suitable for travel, the following factors should be taken into consideration.

  • Travel case

7 Best Travel Electric Toothbrushes to Take Care of Your Smile Anywhere You Go

Usually, the travel cases are made with plastic and can reduce any chance of damage to the bristles on the brush head significantly. It will also reduce the likelihood of the electric toothbrush getting switched on by mistake. The extra moisture on the brush will not shift onto the other contents of the bag.

Most premium electric toothbrushes like the Fairywill FW508 Electric Toothbrush come with their own travel cases. Some, like the Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7500 , come with a charging travel case.

  • Battery runtime

Since electric toothbrushes are cordless, they use batteries that are placed inside the handle. The battery can either be removable by hand or fixed internally. Toothbrushes from different brands will require a different-sized battery. Most electric toothbrushes have a battery life of at least two weeks. It takes a few hours to charge them, after which they are ready to go. However, some brushes have an even longer battery life. The AquaSonic Black Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush and the Fairywill FW508 Electric Toothbrush

can retain their charge for up to 30 days. Make sure that your charge your toothbrush at the hotel if you do not have a rechargeable case.

  • Charging options

Electric toothbrushes do not have to be plugged in when you use them, but they should be charged regularly.

There are different ways to charge an electric toothbrush. Some require cords, while others can be charged with just a USB cord. In most cases, you will already have a suitable USB plug and wall charger, which means that you will be able to charge your brush without any hassle. Some brushes come with standard plug cords that are made particularly for that model. If you happen to lose that plug cord, you will have to replace it immediately.

When you travel to different countries, you will have to deal with different voltages. Get your hands on a plug adapter and voltage converter that can adjust to multiple different voltages, or opt for a dual voltage product.

How to choose your ideal electric toothbrush?

Once you have determined whether an electric toothbrush is ideal for travel, you have to decide whether the product itself will be effective. Investing in a subpar electric toothbrush that does not deliver results will only worsen your dental health.

There are certain factors that you can take into consideration to evaluate the efficacy of the product. You will find yourself being drawn to some features more than the others, and that is perfectly acceptable. In fact, that will help you narrow down your choices based on your requirements.

The following features can make or break an electric toothbrush.

  • Brush head type: oscillating or sonic

If you are new to electric toothbrushes, you might be confused between a sonic brush and an oscillating brush.

Sonic brushes can use a mechanical side-to-side cleaning motion to eliminate plaque. Alternatively, they use a non-contact approach to create intense vibrations with the help of sonic technology. The Philips Sonicare Expert Clean 7500 is a sonic toothbrush.

On the other hand, oscillating-rotating toothbrushes move back and forth or side to side in a circular motion so as to remove dental debris and plaque. Oral-B electric brushes swear by this technology and have also introduced pulsations.

  • Cleaning modes

Additional cleaning modes will help you tailor a brushing practice for yourself. The default mode is called ‘Clean’ or ‘Daily Clean, and it works alongside other modes such as Gum Care, Whitening, Deep/Pro-Clean, and more. If you want maximum versatility, you should opt for a toothbrush that has many cleaning modes to choose from.

  • Pressure sensor

The bristles of the brush should touch your teeth and gums, but you do not have to scrub hard. Brushing correctly is not about applying excess pressure and being aggressive. Electric toothbrushes with a pressure sensor will detect changes in the brushing sensation and alert you whenever you are brushing too hard. You will learn to be more conscious over time.

  • Built-in timer

A built-in timer is an invaluable feature in an electric toothbrush. Not brushing long enough can cause long-term damage to dental health. Brushes with timers will ensure that you brush your teeth for the recommended two minutes and attend to every section of the mouth for a certain amount of time. As it happens, all the electric toothbrushes on our list come with built-in timers.

  • Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone app available

Smart features can elevate an ordinary device. Whether it be Sonicare’s BrushSync technology or Oral-B’s user-controlled SmartRing, electric toothbrushes are now dedicated to helping you improve your oral care routine. Brushes with Bluetooth connectivity such as the Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7500 and the Oral-B 9600 can connect with your smartphone or tablet through an app. If you want to monitor your brushing habits, these features are crucial.

  • How can I charge my electric toothbrush in Europe?
  • How often should I replace brush heads?
  • Is it possible to charge an electric toothbrush in a case?
  • Our verdict

The Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7500 is a sonic toothbrush that offers four modes and three intensities so that you can create a customized brushing routine. It has a powerful motor and offers up to 31,000 brush strokes per minute. The pressure sensor will ensure that you do not damage your gums.

The AquaSonic Black Series Ultra Whitening Toothbrush comes with four modes and operates on sonic technology. The built-in timer makes sure that you devote enough time to brushing. It is waterproof and comes with eight brush heads. Wireless charging is a handy advantage.

The sonic Fairywill FW508 Electric Toothbrush has five modes and is equipped with a 40,000 VPM motor. It comes with eight brush heads and removes plaque efficiently.

We hope that our quest to find the best travel electric toothbrush that can make travels a lot more fun.

SURI Electric Toothbush

Highlights: Though it’s made of simple, eco-friendly materials, the SURI brush earns major points for functionality as well. You’ll find little to complain about as you use it.

What we like

  • Modular, repairable design
  • compostable brush head
  • no plastic packaging
  • No compromises on cleaning power
  • Brush lasts 40 brushing sessions per charge

What could be better

  • Can only be composted industrially
  • Limited personalization
  • May not feel powerful enough for intense brushes
  • Price: $92, or $116 for a brush and UV case
  • Charging Style: Internal battery charged by a slimline charger
  • Includes: Brush, magnetic mirror mount, slimline charger, UV case (optional upgrade)

SURI (Sustainable Rituals) is an electric toothbrush brand making environmental sustainability one of its defining features. The brush boasts a modular design with component parts that can be replaced, recycled, and even composted when worn out.

Its brush head is made from sustainably sourced cornstarch with castor-oil bristles and will break down within weeks in an industrial composter. Each order includes a prepaid mailer that lets you ship back spent brush heads so SURI can compost them. The brush’s body is an aluminum shell that’s waterproof and recyclable. You can return the brush for repairs if it breaks during your warranty.

our experience with the suri toothbrush

After 9 months of everyday use, we can say that SURI is simply a great electric toothbrush. The streamlined design means it doesn’t offer much variation in functionality, but the default mode should work well for almost all users. It runs for two minutes per session, with haptic feedback every 30 seconds to encourage you to switch mouth quadrants. The gentle buzzing provides a surprisingly robust 33,000 sonic vibrations per minute—more than enough for your teeth to feel clean. Its battery is also impressively long-lasting, as the brush can take up to 40 days on a single charge before you’ll need to use the included slimline charger. We do wish the magnetic mirror mount wasn’t stickum, but a magnet on both sides. Once you stick it to the medicine cabinet or mirror, it can’t be moved. The UV case may seem like overkill to some, but when you factor in its utility as a second charger, we think it’s worth the extra money.

travel friendly electric toothbrush

Highlights: Foreo’s newest generation toothbrush improves on its predecessors with a silicone brush head that’s twice as strong with 360-degree flex and a low-battery indicator that lets you know when it’s time to recharge.

  • Low-battery indicator LED lets you know when it’s time to charge
  • Smart memory feature remembers your brush settings between uses
  • Stronger silicone bristles than its predecessor the ISSA 2 which was an important upgrade over the older model, which used to “shed bristles”
  • Not necessarily a huge upgrade if you already have the ISSA 2
  • Price: $189
  • Power Source : internal battery charged by USB cable
  • Includes: ISSA 3 brush base, hybrid brush head, USB charger, travel pouch

Foreo’s ISSA electric toothbrush redefines the industry with a battery-operated brush that it claims needs to be charged via USB just once or twice a year. Having used the previous generation electric toothbrush by Foreo, the ISSA 2, we found the “charge once a year” claims to be a bit of an exaggeration (our ISSA 2 needed to be charged about 4 times a year for optimal performance), but this is an energy efficient toothbrush nonetheless, and we will report back on how long the ISSA 3 battery lasts.

The ISSA 3 brush utilizes sonic pulse technology and offers 16 adjustable intensities, so it works for regular and sensitive brushers alike. It’s made from non-toxic, petroleum-free silicone that the company claims are 35 times more hygienic than regular nylon bristles. The back of the brush also contains a tongue cleaner, and the bristles’ angled design makes it easy to reach the back of your teeth.

As the top-tier Foreo toothbrush, the ISSA 3 wants to be the last brush you ever reach for . Like the earlier models, the ISSA 3 claims to have a staggeringly efficient battery life that will last through 365 uses per two-hour charging session.

This model gets an upgrade over the ISSA 2 with brush bristles that are twice as strong, and a low-battery indicator LED light. It offers 16 levels of intensity like the ISSA 2, but with an added smart memory feature that remembers your preferred settings between sessions. The included tongue and cheek cleaner make it easier than ever to enjoy an entirely clean mouth. In fact, the company claims that the ISSA 3 proved through clinical testing to improve overall oral hygiene by 140%.

Thanks to the brush’s Sonic Pulse Technology, it gently cleans teeth and gums without causing irritation, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive gums or problems being too abrasive on their enamel.

At $20 more than the ISSA 2, the ISSA 3 is likely worth the upgrade if you’re buying for the first time. But, if you already own an earlier model Foreo brush, these improvements are probably ones you can pass on.

our experience with the foreo issa 3

The team at LeafScore were fans of the ISSA 2 Foreo model, but didn’t like the excessive plastic packaging with replacement brush heads, and the propensity of the old toothbrush heads to shed bristles as they wore down. Foreo has tried to fix these issues with the new ISSA 3. The bristles are noticeably stronger, and more robust than the ISSA 2.

Georganics Sonic Toothbrush

Highlights: This eco-friendly electric toothbrush is shipped with plastic-free packaging, and you can return the brush heads to the company for recycling.

  • Built-in timer ensures even and consistent brushing
  • Brush heads can be sent back to the company for recycling
  • Shipped with plastic-free packaging
  • Shipping adds up if you live outside of the UK. Between initial intercontinental shipping, and then return shipping to recycle the brush heads, carbon emissions may outweight what you save by using this toothbrush.
  • Price: $97.85
  • Charging Style: lithium battery, charging stand
  • Includes: plastic brush handle with lithium battery, replaceable brush head, charging stand

For those in the UK, Georganics offers the ultimate in eco-friendly electric toothbrushes with its recyclable toothbrush.

Similar to its competition, the brush works with three speed adjustments for a stroke speed up to 35,000 rotations per minute. Its built-in two-minute timer alerts you every thirty seconds to change your brushing quadrant, and the entire brush is certified waterproof for safe use in the shower. The Sonic Brush also includes three stroke speeds to make it adaptable for those who have mouth sensitivities or are going through orthodontia work. The brush runs off a lithium-ion battery, and you can expect a full charge to last up to five weeks.

Georganics makes their commitment to ecological sustainability clear with a ‘Zero To Landfill’ program that allows you to send your used brush heads back to the company for recycling.

Note:   the heads include nylon bristles that can’t be recycled at home. Each brush is also shipped out with plastic-free packaging for less guilt on the onset.

When purchasing, make sure you specify where you want a type C 2 pin plug (for use in the EU and UK) or a type A plat pin plug (USA).

Highlights: This high-end brush connects with your phone for extra information on your brushing habits, and you can purchase recyclable brush heads to improve its sustainability.

  • Bluetooth inclusion lets you pair this brush to your smartphone
  • Oral B as a company is making impressive strides towards sustainability
  • Premium materials should last for years, resulting in fewer wasteful replacements
  • Certainly a premium item with a pricetag to match
  • We’d like to see the brush itself made with more recyclable materials
  • Price: $210
  • Power Type: Lithium-Ion battery
  • Includes: Rechargeable handle, three brush heads, charger, travel case

As a premium option from the number one recommended brush brand by dentists, the Oral-B Genius X utilizes artificial intelligence to coach you into better brushing habits. The company claims it has learned thousands of human brushing behaviors, which allows it to recognize your brushing style in real-time and offer personal coaching to improve your technique.

This brush includes Bluetooth technology that lets you pair it with your smartphone for detailed insight on your brushing effectiveness based on whether you cover all areas and apply appropriate amounts of pressure.

From a functionality standpoint, this premium toothbrush’s rotating bristles perform 48,000 brush movements per minute (compared to 600 for a manual toothbrush), making it a powerful plaque remover. It also includes six brushing modes, including sensitive and whitening.

As a company, Oral B is making moves towards sustainability by relying on 100% renewable energy across its North American manufacturing sites—the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road a year. These manufacturing sites are also certified Zero-Manufacturing-Waste-to-Landfill, meaning that more than half of all waste is immediately recycled, while the rest is converted back to energy.

Though the brush itself doesn’t stand out for its environmental sustainability, it’s made from premium materials that should last for years before breaking down. You can also purchase recyclable brush heads ( View Price on Amazon ) to bring the brush closer to zero-waste. Likewise, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers a greener way to power it, especially if your home utilizes renewable energy.

Highlights: As one of Philips’ top models, this brush includes Bluetooth capabilities and five brush modes. It might be more toothbrush than most people need, but its quality design should ensure it lasts you for years to come.

  • Ships with 8 brush heads, which should keep you going for a while
  • Bluetooth technology links the toothbrush to your phone to help improve brushing habits
  • It’s rugged and durable, which cuts back on the need to constantly replace (and waste)
  • Like the Oral-B Genius, this carries a premium pricetag
  • Proprietary charging system leaves you with no choice but to buy a new charger if you accidentally break the one that came with it
  • Price: $299
  • Power Source: Lithium-ion battery
  • Includes: Diamond clean handle, eight brush heads, glass charger, USB charging travel case

If you’re looking for a top-tier electric toothbrush experience, it’s hard to beat the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean series.

Your teeth will benefit from up to 62,000 brush movements a minute, which purportedly work to remove ten times more plaque than a manual brush. It includes three intensity levels and five modes (clean, white, gum health, deep clean, and tongue care), and a pressure sensor to alert you if you’re brushing too hard to protect your gums.

Like the Oral B Genius X, the brush connects with your smartphone through the company’s app for personalized coaching and real-time feedback on your brushing effectiveness. You can use the app to set oral health goals and track your progress towards meeting them. Also included is a 3D mouth map feature, which lets you highlight dentist-suggested trouble spots, so the brush reminds you to give them extra attention.

A high price demands premium styling, and this electric toothbrush stands out with its glass cup charging base (similar to how you can wirelessly charge a cellphone). Simply plop the brush in after use and pull it out again when you’re ready for another round—no messing with alignment required. Also included are four styles of brush heads and a travel-friendly USB charging case.

As a company , Philips has gone public with its goals to become 100% carbon neutral and source all of its electricity through renewable sources by 2020. It’s not clear at the moment how close the company is to meeting these targets.

Ecologically speaking, what the DiamondClean has most going for it is that you’ll want to hold onto it for a long time to justify the price. Customer reviews indicate it’s a rugged piece of equipment that should last through heavy use. Also note that the brush makes it easy to swap out heads, meaning that multiple family members can use one base.

However, you’re out of luck if the charging glass breaks or you lose the USB powered travel case, as you can’t charge the brush through any other method.

Highlights: Quip’s sleek design and replaceable battery make it the perfect electric toothbrush for an on-the-go lifestyle, though replacement heads get pricey without a subscription.

  • Offered as a quarterly subscription that eliminates the need for guesswork as to whether it’s time to replace brush heads
  • Brush bases are made from recycled plastic or metal
  • Brush heads are fully recyclable, with the exception of their nylon bristles
  • Lack of charging stand ultimately means less plastic waste produced
  • The best value is through a subscription, which may be a polarizing factor
  • Quip brushes are at their most sustainable when used with rechargeable batteries, which not everyone may have
  • Power Source: AAA battery
  • Includes: Slim handle brush, soft-bristled brush head, AAA battery, cover

Imagine an electric toothbrush that doesn’t look out of place on Instagram, and you’ve got an idea of what Quip is offering. This sleek, millennial-friendly model runs on a single AAA battery, which the company provides in its quarterly subscription refill packages. For $5 every three months, you’ll receive a new brush head and battery. Pay an extra $5, and you’ll get toothpaste as well.  Forgo the subscription, and you’ll pay $15 per head instead.

Despite their minimalist design and low price, Quip brushes deliver to keep your teeth clean. They include a two-minute timer that pulses every thirty seconds to keep you on track, and the brush heads have a tongue scraper on the back.

Quip motors power 15,000 brush movements per minute, and the brushes have soft bristles that are known for being gentle on teeth. This makes them ideal for overly aggressive brushers or those with sensitive gums. If you’re used to a more vigorous electric toothbrush, you might miss that “squeaky clean” feeling when you use one.

Environmentally, Quip brushes stand out. The brush bases are made from metal or recycled plastic that is designed to last for the long term, and the brush heads are fully recyclable, save the nylon bristles. You also don’t need to mess with a charging stand like with most other brands. According to the company, this means the brushes result in up to 80% less plastic waste over their lifespan compared to traditional brands.

Some people will love that the brush runs off a replaceable battery. This is a limiting factor for many electric toothbrushes—the battery is usually the first component to go, rendering your expensive brush no better than a manual. Allowing you to replace the battery yourself, in contrast, may extend its lifespan and gives you the option to use rechargeable AAA batteries instead ( View Price on Amazon ) – bonus points if you charge them off a renewable energy supply!

Highlights: This budget-friendly Oral-B brush includes essential electric toothbrush features and can support dozens of different brush head styles (including recyclable ones).

  • Timer helps to ensure consistent brushing while being used
  • Brush heads are designed to be 100% recyclable as long as they’re sent back
  • Pressure sensor helps to cut back on hard brushing
  • Made from relatively cheap plastic materials that won’t last as long as more premium models
  • Only one mode for brushing
  • Power Type: Lithium-ion battery
  • Includes: Rechargeable brush, brush head, 220v charger

For those interested in a stripped-down electric toothbrush from a leading brand, the Oral-B Pro 1000 delivers all the essential features without excessive bells and whistles. It includes a two-minute timer that pulses every thirty seconds to direct you to a different mouth quadrant. While the brush has only one mode, its included pressure sensor stops pulsations when you’re brushing too hard and need to ease up. Expect it to last a week or longer between charges.

At $40, this brush is one of the more affordable mainstream options. The rechargeable base is compatible with various brush heads from Oral B, including ones for sensitive teeth and others that focus on whitening or flossing.  You can also purchase compatible brush heads ( View Price on Amazon ) designed to be 100% recyclable, so long as you ship them back to the manufacturer.

However, this brush loses points for environmental sustainability. Its low price point means it’s made of relatively cheap plastic materials and isn’t likely to last as long as more expensive models. But as stated above, one point in its favor is that the toothbrush base is compatible with recyclable brush heads, so you can cut down on your trash production.

Hands down, the FOREO ISSA3, with its best in class energy efficiency, is the best electric toothbrush for travel. You could go on a month long business trip with the FOREO ISSA3 and never have to charge the toothbrush once.

Do any of the brushes have replaceable batteries? I need to replace my brush only because the battery won’t hold a charge any more. The rest of the brush is still fully functional and it seems such an environmental waste to throw it out.

Karen Silas

I picked up my first electric toothbrush after my dentist recommended it, and, along with a water flosser , it really helps give my teeth the feeling of a near-professional clean without daily trips to the dental office!

There are so many electric toothbrushes available, with the most popular being from the likes Oral-B and Philips, and it can get overwhelming to try to choose. That’s why I’ve been looking high and low for the best electric toothbrushes everywhere – silicone to sustainable, Amazon and Superdrug to John Lewis – and even got some expert advice to for some extra guidance.

To find out more about electric toothbrushes, I consulted with two dental experts: Dr Hajra Sarwar, a dentist at Sonic Dental , and Dr Richard Marques BDS of Doctor Richard London.

What are the pros and cons of an electric toothbrush vs a manual one.

My personal dentist recommended an electric toothbrush for thorough cleaning, and that seems to be the general consensus among dental professionals. Although there are some cons to be taken into account if you're considering swapping your manual brush for a battery-operated one.

Dr Sarwar explains: “Electric toothbrushes remove up to twice as much plaque and food debris from the teeth, which can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay; they make effective cleaning easier for all, but are especially helpful for people with arthritis or limited hand mobility.

"Many electric brushes have built-in timers to ensure you brush for the dentist-recommended two minutes... [and] have pressure sensors to help avoid over-brushing which can damage enamel.”

Dr Marques, meanwhile, notes that electric toothbrushes are “overall a great method of cleaning teeth” and “achieve a good clean more easily”.

But there are some caveats: “It's important to note that electric toothbrushes actually do vary greatly in effectiveness. Some cheap electric toothbrushes are actually excellent, while some expensive electric toothbrushes can be more difficult to use or have features that aren’t actually that useful (and don’t validate the high price point!).”

And price can definitely be a negative. “Electric toothbrushes are more expensive than manual ones," says Dr Sarwar, "though replacement brush heads are the main ongoing cost.”

Manual toothbrushes, of course, are much cheaper than electric ones and are more simple and portable for travel. But, the dental expert continues, "Brushing effectively with a manual brush is much more technique sensitive and requires more effort. It can be harder to clean all tooth surfaces thoroughly, especially with limited mobility."

Which is better: an oscillating-rotating electric toothbrush or a sonic toothbrush?

Are you wondering which toothbrush - a rotating electric toothbrush with a round head, or a vibrating toothbrush - is best? "Both are great," says Dr Marques, who notes: "Some toothbrushes employ a mixture of oscillating and sonic which is considered the best."

Dr Sarwar, meanwhile, also suggests that both are beneficial at removing plaque, but one might have the edge! “Oscillating-rotating brushes have a round head that rotates and oscillates (sweeps from side to side). This motion is thought to be particularly good at dislodging plaque. Sonic toothbrushes vibrate at very high frequencies (often over 20,000 strokes per minute) to create micro-movements in fluids like toothpaste, which can disrupt plaque and help it detach from teeth.

"There is some evidence to suggest that oscillating-rotating brushes may be slightly more effective at removing plaque, but both types offer significant benefits over manual brushes.”

How I chose the best electric toothbrushes

  • 2-minute self-timer

Accessories:

Editor's note: "I am a reluctant electric toothbrush user. I still feel very attached to my old fashioned manual toothbrush, but all the hygienists tell me to go electric, so I'm compromising with electric at night and a regular toothbrush in the morning. The electric toothbrush I have is the Spotlight Sonic Toothbrush, and I am liking this one because it has three different settings; I am on Sensitive as I'm still getting to grips with it. Each has a different level of speed to ensure that you are comfortable while brushing your teeth.

"The high-frequency brush movements ensure that both your toothpaste and oxygen reach those little spaces between your teeth that can be hard to get to. Not that it should really matter, but I love the colour of my electric toothbrush as well.Charge time is a full 15 hours which is great, and it comes with a cute travel case as well. I think it would make a nice gift as there are plenty of bundles you can shop online."

What pushed me to buy this originally was the embedded timer, which changes vibrations when your two-minutes of brushing is up. It also has a light that flashes when you're brushing too hard, and it's educated me (over time) to find the right pressure to brush with."

One tech tip: how to repair an electric toothbrush, one tech tip electric toothbrushes.

LONDON (AP) — Toothbrushes used to be simple, powered only by your hand so they never broke down. Nowadays, rechargeable electric toothbrushes are increasingly popular because they make brushing easier and more effective, but they are a headache when they stop working properly.

Inside an electric toothbrush’s waterproof housing is a battery that powers a tiny motor which rapidly rotates or vibrates a replaceable brush head. The batteries are usually rechargeable but don't last forever. The question of their longevity, and toothbrush repairability as a whole, is the subject of many online forums.

If you’ve ever owned one, you’ve probably noticed recharging intervals becoming more and more frequent. At some point you might decide to throw it out, adding to the world’s growing pile of electronic waste.

But all is not lost. You can pay someone else to repair it, or — with some online help — do it yourself. Here are some pointers:

CAN I REPAIR MY ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH MYSELF?

According to the manufacturers, the answer is usually no. They warn people against disassembling the devices, saying it's dangerous or that it will void the warranty. But that doesn't mean you can't do it yourself, repair advocates say.

You can find websites and YouTube channels devoted to showing people how to fix their battery-powered brushes.

Toothbrush manufacturers will say the devices are not “user serviceable” but it's “blatantly untrue,” said Shahram Mokhtari, lead teardown engineer at iFixit, a right-to-repair advocacy group. "Some of these devices have very replaceable batteries," and in most cases, it's just a matter of getting inside the device and learning how to do a little bit of soldering or taking it to someone who can do it, he said.

DIY fixes might soon be standard practice. The European Union, a pioneer of global tech regulations, is drafting rules to promote the repair of electrical devices, while several states have introduced right-to-repair legislation.

HOW DO I GET TO THE BATTERY?

Every model is slightly different but models from Oral B and Philips Sonicare — two of the most popular brands — can be dismantled using the same general procedure.

Most Oral B brushes can be opened by holding the toothbrush and the charging stand together, and then twisting the stand to pop the bottom cap off. On some models, you might instead have to use the stand as a lever to pop it off.

Philips Sonicare models are a bit trickier. You'll need something to pry off the bottom cap, such as a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic tool known as a “ spudger .”

Whatever the model, if it's too tight some websites advise softening up the plastic housing by placing the brush in hot water for a few minutes.

Once it's off, you'll need to slide the electronic innards out of the housing. You might need to first remove a metal or plastic ring on the brush head spindle. Then push the spindle against something hard to slide the motor assembly out the bottom. You might need to pry open some plastic tabs first. Again, each toothbrush is different so it's best to consult, if possible, the guide to your specific model on iFixit or other repair websites.

DO I NEED TECHNICAL SKILLS?

On some models, the battery is not so easy to remove because it's soldered to the circuit board. But if you feel handy, you could do it yourself, Mokhtari said. You will need a soldering iron to undo the wiring connection and then you'll have to re-solder a new battery in. If you've never done it before, there are videos. Be careful, the soldering iron is hot.

“We would encourage people to learn that skill because it’s not a difficult thing to learn,” said Mokhtari. The soldering process for toothbrushes are generally similar, and will be “a little bit delicate" and “a little bit difficult,” he said.

CAN I GET A REPLACEMENT BATTERY?

Yes, but you'll have to make sure it's the right size. It's usually a cylindrical cell similar to the Energizer or Duracell AA batteries in your TV remote, but don't assume it's the same.

It could could be longer, shorter or have a different diameter than a standard AA. Some have metal tabs that need to be soldered to the circuit board. Whatever the type, it should be available online.

WHICH ONES ARE EASIEST TO REPAIR?

Oral B is making it easier for consumers to do DIY repairs with their IO line of toothbrushes, which can be fixed without specialist tools. Some versions even come with a circular charger that's specifically designed for use as a tool to twist off the bottom cap when turned upside down. After sliding out the mechanism, simply pop the battery out.

The downside is that IO models, and their brush heads, are more expensive than other Oral B model lines, according to the U.K. website toothbrushbattery.com, which has a buyer's guide ranking electric toothbrushes by their ease of repair.

Some upstart brands like Suri and Quip highlight their repairability as part of their sustainable appeal. Suri, however, says owners should send them back to be fixed and shouldn’t do it themselves, and only if they’ve signed up for a brush head subscription plan.

Other types may vary. Mokhtari demonstrated for the Associated Press the procedure for taking apart a brand new Philips Sonicare 6100 model. It took him more than 15 minutes to get the bottom cap off and remove the electronics. Then he tackled a complex desoldering process.

“This is just not consumer friendly. This is not repair friendly.” he said. “We’re already way beyond what would be reasonable for a DIY repair job.”

LONDON (Reuters) -The downturn in manufacturing activity across the euro zone deepened in April due to crumbling demand despite factories cutting prices, pushing firms to reduce headcount again, a survey showed on Thursday. How to have a sustainable wedding: six tips for a greener ‘I do’

From excessive travel to food waste, weddings can have a huge carbon footprint. Here’s how to plan an eco-friendly celebration

A wedding is a couple’s big day. Unfortunately, it can also have a big carbon footprint.

The average American wedding creates around 60 metric tons of CO 2 – the carbon equivalent of 71 round-trip flights from New York to LA. You’d need to plant roughly 60 trees and let them grow for 100 years to sequester that amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And with more than 2m marriages taking place in the US alone in 2022 , the wedding industry’s environmental impact adds up.

Kat Wray’s eco-ethical wedding resource site, Mindfully Wed, features a free wedding footprint calculator anyone can use to estimate and reduce the impact of their nuptials. Wray, who is also a wedding photographer, says that the most carbon-intensive elements of a wedding are air travel, high guest count, menu items containing meat, food waste and imported flowers, in that order. Details like attire choices and decor can also add to a wedding’s carbon footprint.

“I encourage couples to consider wedding planning as an opportunity for joyful activism,” says Wray. “Weddings can be a way to use your consumer power to show your guests what’s important to you, and what you believe in.”

For those planning a wedding, experts suggested six key ways to make it more environmentally friendly.

Reduce travel emissions

Deciding on a location can be difficult and depends on many factors. But if you want to prioritize a low level of travel emissions, the best approach is choosing a venue close to where the majority of your guests live. Holding the ceremony, reception and photo session at the same place also cuts down on transportation.

If a particular destination is non-negotiable, couples can consider a venue that is central for most guests or group transportation, like shuttles, to reduce the number of vehicles attendees use. “If everyone’s coming from all corners of the world, you could decide to make the guest list smaller, so at least less people will be traveling,” suggests Wray.

Make your menu green

Opting for local caterers who source seasonal food further reduces transportation emissions. “It’s also about supporting the local economy, and building biodiversity locally,” says Michelle Miles, who runs the UK wedding vendor collective Sustainable Wedding Alliance. Because unpredictable factors like weather can affect the availability of local produce, Miles recommends couples keep their menus general: for example, “not committing to, say, local green beans, but rather saying ‘seasonal green vegetables’ so that you have the flexibility to deliver”.

long table of food with people reaching to fill plates

Meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production, with 1kg of beef creating 70kg of emissions, meaning that the most sustainable wedding feast is a vegetarian or vegan one.

If budget constraints make sustainable catering unfeasible, or meat must be on the menu, plan the meals to minimize waste and ask your venue if they can permit guests to take leftover food home or staff to eat it (many venues discard leftovers because of local health codes).

“Every staff member got a couple meals out of our event,” says Natalie Goldfarb, 30, who had an eco-conscious wedding in Poughkeepsie in 2022. Food-based party favors can also be a smart way to give your guests something they will use up, rather than a keepsake that could end up in the garbage. “I did glass bottles of tea leaves as a tchotchke,” says Goldfarb.

Choose local flowers for decoration

Flowers that have grown locally are more eco-friendly than those imported internationally. Cut flower farms are becoming more common in the US and the UK, for instance, so there may be a wider variety of blooms to choose from than you expect. You can also consider renting potted plants and silk bouquets.

If your favorite flowers are out of season or not local, consider using a mix of local greens and a few imported flowers, and look into organizations in your area that recycle wedding flowers for other venues, events or activities, such as flower-arranging at senior care facilities.

Wear sustainable clothing

A wedding dress and veil hanging from some shelves.

When it comes to wedding apparel, sustainability and extravagance don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Many businesses now specialize in vintage and resale formalwear. Goldfarb looked for her wedding dress at the New York non-profit Housing Works , which hosts an annual Bride on a Buck wedding sale, and ultimately had a dress made from recycled poly lining and natural fabrics by the Brooklyn design studio Loulette . For bridal parties, mismatched dresses are fashionable – bridesmaids can wear pieces they already own or select something they’ll wear again.

Consider an heirloom ring

Vintage rings do not require any new materials to be made or mined, making them the most sustainable option for wedding jewelry.

When it comes to sourcing precious stones like diamonds, mining can be rife with environmental and social issues, and synthesizing them is extremely energy-intensive. This means the question of whether mined or lab-grown stones are more sustainable is not always clear cut. If you’re buying a new stone, seek out jewelers who use certified Sustainability Rated stones and adhere to the Kimberley Process to ensure their wares are conflict-free. While no gemstone mining is free of ethical and environmental concerns, precious stones such as sapphires and emeralds generally come from smaller, more traceable mines than diamonds, making it easier for consumers to research their origins and impact.

The most sustainable wedding is an elopement, simply because they’re small.

Wray says her clients often confide that their dream wedding is an elopement, afterparty optional. This cuts out the need for sundries like groomsmen’s boutonnieres and seating charts and allows couples to use their budget for smaller-scale luxuries or other life needs. She encourages them to cast off the pressure to adhere to old traditions and define the purpose of their ceremony for themselves: “to decide, ‘What will be fun for us?’”

Some companies offer models that combine the low stress of elopement and the trappings of a traditional wedding with a sustainable twist. The Canada-based Pop-Up Chapel specializes in hyper-efficient ceremonies. It hosts 10 individual weddings for 10 couples over the course of one day, providing the venue, flowers, barware and music. For most, a city hall ceremony is the most readily accessible version of this sharing-economy style wedding. And for a dash of drama, get hitched in front of a Las Vegas Elvis who sees 20 couples a day. Cheap, fast and easy – it’s a classic for a reason.

Biden seeks to boost climate-friendly flying

The system of tax credits is designed to boost production of materials for sustainable aviation fuels

travel friendly electric toothbrush

The Biden administration Tuesday sought to spur the growth of sustainable jet fuel, seen as crucial to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with a system of tax credits for producers.

Aviation fuels made out of crops will help “decarbonize” the commercial airline industry, administration officials said as it unveiled the incentives, which were authorized in the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Today’s announcement is an important steppingstone as it acknowledges the important role farmers can play in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and begins to reward them through that contribution in the production of new fuels,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. “This is a great beginning as we develop new markets for sustainable aviation fuel that use home grown agricultural crops produced using climate smart agricultural practices.”

Under the program, producers will be eligible for a tax credits for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that achieves at least a 50 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when compared with petroleum-based jet fuel. SAF that achieves a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 50 percent is eligible for a $1.25 credit per gallon amount, and SAF that achieves an emission reduction of more than 50 percent is eligible for an additional 1 cent per gallon for each percentage point the reduction exceeds 50 percent — for a maximum per gallon credit of $1.75.

In a briefing with reporters, John Podesta, senior adviser to the president for international climate policy, said the U.S. commercial airline industry consumes about 10 percent of all transportation energy and produces about 2 percent of American’s carbon pollution. While seen as “hard to decarbonize,” Podesta said the administration views it as a “must decarbonize sector.”

“SAF is a key to achieving net zero aviation,” Podesta said.

As part of the updated guidance, the SAF Interagency Working Group also announced an update to a model that provides additional methodology for SAF producers to determine the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions rate of the production of jet-fuel crops.

Some environmental groups and scientists have raised concerns about the administration’s plan because farmland being used to grow food could be displaced by crops used for jet-fuel production. That could lead to deforestation around the world as land is cleared for food production to backfill for what is displaced in the United States.

Dan Lashof, director of the World Resources Institute in the United States, said the administration made some improvements to the rules but that they still don’t fully account for the loss of cropland.

“The fundamental issue for us is that we don’t think it makes sense to turn food into jet fuel and we’re not happy about creating a pathway to make it possible,” Lashof said. “This is really about how we should be using the limited amount of prime agricultural land in a world where we need to feed a population approaching 10 billion people.”

The guidance incorporates an Agriculture Department pilot program to encourage the use of climate-smart agriculture practices. Those who use a “bundle” of certain practices, including cover crops and enhanced efficiency fertilizer, would be eligible for a greenhouse gas reduction credit.

Soybeans and vegetable oil are examples of materials used to create the jet fuels that would produce no more than half the emissions of the petroleum-based product.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

A Muslim-friendly guide to Moscow, Russia

In Travel Guide by Dina Dzhunskalieva May 2, 2020

A Muslim-friendly guide to Moscow

Moscow, the capital of Russia and home to an estimated 12 million people, may not be the obvious Muslim-friendly destination. However, the Muslim community in Russia grows year by year – various estimates place the current Muslim population in Russia at between 14 million and 20 million people. With this growth in the local Muslim population, the Russian capital is becoming increasingly Muslim-friendly. The proof? A rising number of Muslim-friendly cafes and restaurants, prayer facilities and festive Muslim events.

Of course, no visit to Moscow is complete without a visit to the Kremlin, Red Square and St.Basil’s Cathedral. But how Muslim-friendly is Russia’s capital?

Here’s your Muslim-friendly guide to visiting this incredible city by local moskvichka , Dina Dzhunskalieva.

Muslim-friendly experiences in Moscow

1. pray in one of the biggest mosques in europe.

The streets surrounding Moscow Cathedral Mosque fill with worshippers during Eid, despite the mosque’s 10 000 person capacity. Photo: AFP

The origins of Moscow Cathedral Mosque can be traced to 1904, but it was demolished and completely reconstructed in 2015. During the period of the Soviet Union, Moscow Cathedral Mosque was the only one in the city that remained open for Muslims to worship in. In September 2015 President Putin himself presided over the mosque’s inauguration ceremony, together with President Erdogan (Turkey) and President Mahmoud Abbas (Palestinian Authority). The impressive architecture features 72m-high minarets and a central dome decorated with no less than 12 kg of gold leaf, which looks especially beautiful on a sunny day, shining in all of its glory.  The new mosque can hold an estimated 10 000 worshippers, which is much needed in Moscow. During major celebrations such as Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, it’s estimated that 100 000 Muslims gather outside the central mosque alone, filling the streets with worshippers offerring their Eid prayers.

Top Tip: Do not miss the opportunity to visit the small museum at the mosque, which has a number of historical artefacts from the Muslim world!

2. Try delicious authentic cuisine from Central Asia and the Caucasus at halal eateries

Moscow is a hub for ethnicities from all over Russia and post-Soviet republics. Every ethnicity has its national cuisine and with seven of Russia’s 22 republics being Muslim-majority populations, there is a sumptuous variety of halal local food on offer.

There are more and more halal cafes and restaurants opening in Moscow, and here are my personal top 3 recommendations that any foodie should not miss:

  • “Chaihona Aiva”

An Uzbek restaurant with a great range of the main Central Asian dishes: plov, manty, samsa and more. Reasonable prices make this place even more attractive for tourists, as for locals.

Beautiful interiors compliment the hearty Uzbek cuisine at Chaihona Aiva. Photo: Chaihona Aiva/TripAdvisor

Great spot if you want to try Caucasus cuisine without going to the Caucasus region itself. Home style chudu (crispy puff pastry with various fillings), Dagestani hinkal (dough-like dish served with garlic sauce and meat) and many more to enjoy.

Crispy chudu parcels from Zhi Est. Photo: Zhi Est/TripAdvisor

Chinese cuisine, mainly represented by lamian – Lanzhou-style noodles. Tastes very close to Turkic laghman and very cheap, although the portions are huge. Also try the steamed bun and selection of various teas.

2. Experience Ramadan in a tent

Ramadan tents have been a feature of Ramadan in Moscow since at least 2003. Photo: Caucasian Knot

The Ramadan tent in Moscow offers iftar dinners and festive Ramadan activities for locals and Muslims who live in the city. On average, it hosts more than 500 guests every night. The budget organization of Iftars and entertainment programme come from Muslims themselves, first of all from the republics and communities which hold thematic evenings during Ramadan.

3. Listen to the most beautiful Quran recitation

The Moscow international Quran competition has taken place annually since 2000. Photo: VoiceofglobalUmmah.blogspot

Every year in Moscow, competitors from around the world gather to take part in an annual international Qur’an recitation competition. This year is the 20th Moscow Quran Reciting Competition, which was scheduled for 19th of April but has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This competition sees representatives from a number of Muslim states including Iran, Turkey, Malaysia and Qatar as well as the Muslim-majority republics of Tatarstan, Dagestan and other regions.
