Hiroshima: Getting there and around

Getting to hiroshima.

  • 0-1 transfers
  • ¥ around 11,000

Kyoto and Hiroshima are connected with each other by the JR Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen . Direct Nozomi trains require about 95 minutes to reach Hiroshima from Kyoto. Otherwise, a transfer from a Hikari or Kodama train to a Sakura train is required at Shin-Osaka Station, and the trip will take about two hours. The regular one way fare from Kyoto to Hiroshima is 10,770 yen for a non-reserved seat or around 12,000 yen for a reserved seat. The Japan Rail Pass fully covers Sakura, Hikari and Kodama trains, but a supplement fee is required for riding Nozomi trains.

  • ¥ 3,000 - 8,000

Multiple companies, including Willer Express , operate daytime and overnight buses between Kyoto and Hiroshima. The one way trip takes 7-9 hours. One way fares vary greatly based on travel date and bus type between around 3,000 and 8,000 yen. Online reservations can be made through Willer .

  • 2-3 transfers
  • ¥ 6,600

By local trains , the one way trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima takes about 6-7 hours and typically involves about two or three transfers of trains. The regular fare is a relatively expensive 6,600 yen, however, with a Seishun 18 Kippu you could theoretically do the trip for as little as 2,410 yen.

Above fees and schedules are subject to change. Be sure to check current yen exchange rates .

Getting around

Hiroshima has Japan's largest tram network with eight tram lines connecting Hiroshima Station with most of the city's attractions. Tram line number 2 goes as far as Miyajima-guchi, from where ferries depart to Miyajima . The fare for a single tram ride within central Hiroshima is a flat 220 yen. Outside the city center, the fare increases with distance traveled. The Japan Rail Pass is not valid on the trams.

The local Paspy IC card and other major IC cards, including Suica and Icoca, can be used to pay the fare on trams and buses in Hiroshima and on the ferries to Miyajima (both companies). On JR trains, the local Paspy card is not accepted, but the other major IC cards are. Note that Paspy will get replaced by the "Mobiry Days" card and app from September 2024 (Paspy will be discontinued on March 29, 2025).

Alternatively, a one-day pass for unlimited use of all trams on one calendar day is available for 700 yen. For an additional 200 yen, you get a one-day pass that also includes the ferry ride to Miyajima by Matsudai ferry (but not by JR ferry) and back. Holders of these one-day passes, furthermore, qualify for a discount on the Miyajima Ropeway (1500 yen instead of 2000 yen).

The JR-operated Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Buses , called Meipuru-pu (combination of Maple and Loop), serve all of central Hiroshima's major sightseeing attractions (see map above). There are four routes: the orange, green, lemon and blue routes with 1-2 buses per hour each (the orange and blue lines are less frequent). The buses are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and several regional JR passes . Without a rail pass, they cost 200 yen per ride (330 yen for the blue line) or 400 yen for a 1-day pass.

Good walkers will also be able to cover the roughly three kilometers from Hiroshima Station via Shukkeien and Hiroshima Castle to the Peace Memorial Park on foot.

The Ultimate Hiroshima Day Trip Itinerary from Kyoto, Japan

Hiroshima, Japan is without a doubt known around the world for what happened on August 6, 1945 at at 8:15AM, the first use in the world of a nuclear weapon at war. During our visit to Japan we could not skip over the opportunity to visit the solemn sites of Hiroshima as another reminder of what the tragedies of war can bring.

With several days planned to stay in Kyoto as part of a longer Japan trip, we decided to visit Hiroshima as a day trip from Kyoto. Since it only takes one day to see the main highlights in Hiroshima, this meant we did not have to pack and move all our luggage again. It is definitely a long day trip, but absolutely worth it.

How to get to Hiroshima from Kyoto

Hiroshima castle, atomic bomb dome, hiroshima peace memorial park, how to get to miyajima from hiroshima, meriken park, kobe harborland, chinatown in kobe, return to kyoto.

The city of Hiroshima is located approximately 225 miles west of Kyoto, both on the southwest side of Honshu is Japan’s main island.

The easiest and fastest way to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima is on the Shinkansen bullet train with a total travel time of about 2 hours. Reserved seat tickets cost 11,300 yen each way, and you can expect to save about 500 yen for non-reserved seats. When we traveled on the bullet train without reserved seats we never had any trouble finding seats in the non-reserved train car, but the customer service at the train station warned that is not always the case.

If you have the Japan Rail Pass, this is the best option as the train ride is already included. Just make sure not to take the Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen, as those express trains are not included in the JR pass.

Without the Japan Rail Pass , the cheapest way to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima is via bus or car, it is a 4.5-6+ hour journey. The highway bus starts at 3,500 yen each way depending on availability and bus company. Your round trip journey on the bus will cost less than one way on the Shinkansen, but you will spend a good portion of your day on the bus.

There is the option of an overnight bus leaving late in the evening from Kyoto, arriving to Hiroshima first thing in the morning. This can be a good option if you are looking to save some money by skipping a night at a hotel and take full advantage of your day trip to Hiroshima. Just remember, the highway night bus has reclined and comfy seats, but do not lay flat so the quality of your sleep can be limited.

Morning in Hiroshima

Walking from the Hiroshima train station towards the center of town, our first stop was the Hiroshima Castle. It is a beautiful 16th century castle that was almost entirely destroyed by the atomic bomb and has since been rebuilt. Surrounded by a moat, it is a cool little oasis in the middle of the city.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

For us the coolest thing is the Hiroshima Castle is home to three trees that survived the atomic bombing, called Hibakujumoku, where you can visually see the trauma caused on the tree and the struggles it has been going through since.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

One of the most icon images from Japan and WWII is the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima. Built as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, it all changed on August 6, 1945. At 8:15AM on August 6th, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, with the center of the blast occurring only 150m horizontally and 600m vertically from the Dome.

While those inside were killed instantly, the stone and steel structure was only partially destroyed unlike the surrounding area that was leveled due to the blast. The building was ultimately preserved as both a memorial of the bombing and a symbol of peace. It is now a highlight of the Peace Memorial Park which surrounds the building.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a massive memorial park in the center of Hiroshima with many notable monuments and museums to visit.

We started off at the Children’s Peace Monument to commemorate little Sadako Sasaki and the thousands of child victims of the atomic bombing. The statue is of a girl holding a folded paper crane above her head. To this day thousands of paper cranes are donated to honor this young girls dying wish.

Next to that is the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound which is a simple, yet moving memorial, of a simple mound covering the ashes of 70,000 unidentified victims of the bomb.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

We made our way further down the Memorial Cenotaph a mountain shaped monument that holds the names of all of the people killed by the bomb. Looking through the empty space in the Cenotaph it perfectly frames the Peace Flame right behind it, which will continue to burn until all nuclear bombs are dismantled, and the Atomic Bomb Dome in the background.

The next stop was the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall , which is free to enter. Walking down the slope to the Hall of Remembrance you can learn more about the history that lead to atomic bombing along with a timeline of the aftermath. In The Hall of Remembrance is a 360 degree tiled image of what Hiroshima looked like after the bombing, with a small central monument displaying 8:15 am, the exact time of the bombing.

Our last stop was the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum . Entrance to the museum is 200 yen per person and expect a line to get in. Here a main focus is showing victim’s belongings to highlight the absolute horrors that happened.

Afternoon in Miyajima

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

About 25 minutes west of Hiroshima is the island of Miyajima, famous for its waterfront shrine and torii gate that looks like it is floating in the sea during high tide. It is best to check the weather and tide charts to make sure you will get the experience you are looking for in Miyajima.

It was raining on and off throughout the entire day, so decided on a more relaxed day trip to Hiroshima. The trip was not worth it for us to go stand in the rain someplace else, while spending the additional time traveling.

The best way to get from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima is to take the JR San-yo Line from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi Station, which is about 30 minutes. Then catch the short ferry from Miyajima-guchi Pier and Miyajima. The best part is both the ferry and train are included with the JR Pass.

Optional: Dinner in Kobe

We finished exploring Hiroshima in the late afternoon and decided to take an earlier train back towards Kyoto so we could stop in Kobe to try its namesake Kobe beef for dinner. With the Japan Rail Pass there is no additional cost, so we figured why not!

Arriving in Kobe we tried to find last minute availability at the top Kobe beef restaurants in town, which normally have reservations fill up days if not weeks in advance. Don’t make the same mistake as us, or you’ll have to find something else to enjoy for dinner. However, here are the top recommended restaurants in Kobe.

  • Kobe Beef Steak Ishida : Open for both lunch and dinner, you must reserve in advance online and prepay your multi-course meal. You can chose between the different quality, cuts and grams of Kobe beef in your meal. Dinner prices range from 6,670 to 20,125 yen depending on the quality of the meat.
  • Tor Road Steak Aoyama : This family run restaurant provides an intimate dining experience, as there are only 8 seats. Open for both lunch and dinner, the classic Aoyama Special Maya Course for dinner costs 9,900 yen . You can book a reservation by messaging them directly on Facebook , which we got a response to in less than 2 hours.
  • Biftek Kawamura Sannomiya : Here you will find the widest range of beef quality options, so if you are looking to go all out this might be your best choice. The kobe beef courses range from 13,310 to 35,640 yen . Reservations are required and can be made online.

Meriken Park is most well known for the red Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum. This waterfront park is the perfect place to see the Kobe skyline and watch the sunset over the harbor.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

Across the harbor from Meriken Park is the Umie, a massive commercial complex for both locals and visitors alike. Here you will find a supermarket, global retail stores, restaurants, and even the Mosaic Big Ferris Wheel. The ferris wheel costs 800 yen per person to ride and is colorfully lit up at night as well.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

Nankinmachi is the small Chinatown in the center of Kobe where you will find countless Chinese restaurants, shops, and a Chinese temple. It is a great experience to just stroll down the few blocks and take in the entire experience.

After finishing your evening in Kobe it is time to head back to Kyoto on the Shinkansen bullet train. Just make sure to book a return ticket in advance, not only to ensure you have a seat, but also so you don’t miss the last trains in the evening. We bought our Kobe-Kyoto train ticket when we made the last minute decision to catch the Hiroshima-Kobe train to add another stop to our day trip.

We arrived back in Kyoto around 9:30 PM after a nearly 14 hour day trip to Hiroshima and Kobe. Hiroshima is the perfect day trip from Kyoto if you do not plan to venture any further south in Japan. You can also add Kobe and Miyajima to this day trip, but is best to add them in the summer when there is more daylight to explore.

Shinkansen! Kyoto to Hiroshima train with JR pass (and cost without) 🗾🚊 Japan travel blog

Spending a couple of nights in Hiroshima can be a good idea so you can start to get to know this vibrant urban city.

Of course, that includes the place that memorializes the tragedy that Hiroshima is known for .

It can also be a good idea to spend one day in Miyajima from Hiroshima!

Kyoto to Hiroshima shinkansen bullet train with JR pass. Hiroshima and Miyajima one day trip. Backpacking Japan.

So now…

Is it easy to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima by train?

It can be pretty easy.

If you’re traveling with a JR pass, it may require a transfer though. So, it’s not as easy as traveling from Osaka to Hiroshima where you can get a direct train.

Although if you’re traveling without a JR pass, you can definitely find a direct train that will get you from Kyoto to Hiroshima without a transfer.

Either way, there are frequent enough timings that it can be pretty convenient.

So don’t let the transfer deter you or make you nervous!

If you’re looking to get to Hiroshima using your JR pass, you basically have 2 options.

If you don’t have a JR pass, you have one best option to get from Kyoto to Hiroshima by train.

  • Hikari shinkansen

  • JR rapid train
  • Direct Nozomi shinkansen bullet train

Cost with jr pass: free.

  • Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima: Sakura shinkansen train (1.5 hours)
  • Time: 2 hr 5 min

You won’t have to pay anything extra for any portion of the journey if you have a JR pass.

The one small downside of traveling with a JR pass is that it won’t give you access to the fastest trains.

In the case of Kyoto to Hiroshima, it means that you can’t take the direct and fastest Nozomi shinkansen.

This means that you don’t have a direct train option.

The need to transfer trains when traveling with a JR pass may be a slight inconvenience. But in terms of time it takes to get to Hiroshima with the JR pass compared to the Nozomi, it’s a minimal difference of 10 to 20 minutes.

In terms of which of the above options you want to take, it’ll mostly depend on the timing and when you’ll be leaving Kyoto.

There are frequent enough Hikari and Sakura train timings that you can find this option several times throughout the day.

A Perfect Day Trip From Kyoto to Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

Last updated on June 27th, 2023 at 03:17 pm

While some want to experience the advanced technologies in Japan, others prefer to immerse in its ancient culture. Gaurav’s itinerary had to include World WarII history. Plus it was one of the non-negotiable places on our 7-day Japan trip, so we decided to visit Hiroshima as a day trip from Kyoto.

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

best photography spot at sunset in Miyajima island Japan

Hiroshima is a popular day trip from Kyoto, and so is the beautiful island of Miyajima. Don’t be surprised if this is the first time you’ve heard of Miyajima. We hadn’t heard of it until we started planning our Japan trip.

After spending 2 days in Tokyo and  3 days in Kyoto,  we took the 4th day to visit these two places. You could also consider visiting Japan’s Art Islands as a day trip from Kyoto too.

We suggest leaving as early as 7 am from Kyoto to give yourself ample time to cover both these destinations.

Getting from Kyoto to Hiroshima

The direct train from Kyoto to Hiroshima is the fast Nazomi (N-line) which takes about 1:40 minutes. TIP: Nazomi line is not covered in JR Pass, and you could be fined for taking this train without a ticket.

For those with JR pass like us, take the Hikari (H-line) or Kodama (K-line) from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka station. At Osaka, change trains to Sakura (S-line) going to Hiroshima. It will take about 2 hours overall to get to Hiroshima from Kyoto.

Transportation within Hiroshima

There is a  sightseeing loop bus that circles around Hiroshima which is covered under JR Pass. You will find the bus stop right in front of Hiroshima station’s entrance/exit gate. Or just ask one of the super friendly and helpful tourist guides/volunteers at Hiroshima station.

sightseeing bus in Hiroshima which is free with JR pass takes you through all attraction points

Hiroshima also has a large tram network that can be used for transportation, but it is not covered in JR Pass.

Sightseeing stops in Hiroshima

Hiroshima, at first glance, is a thriving young modern city that took us by surprise. The tourist bus stops at all the important sites in Hiroshima; here’s what we suggest you definitely stop at –

The Atomic Bomb Site

This is the most important site that you must know of. Not only is this building the only surviving structure from the explosions but this dome was the “Epicenter of the atomic blast”. FACT: One of the biggest reasons this structure survived was because the missile containing the atomic bomb was dropped 600 meters above the dome at 8:15 am on 6 th August 1945. The effects of the bomb spread in a mushroom cloud pattern impacting the building underneath it the least.

Atomic Dome Hiroshima, a dilapidated building on top of which the atom bomb detonated in 1945 Hiroshima

Nagasaki was bombed 3 days later on August 9 th , 1945 by a bomb called “fat-man” which was much stronger in intensity than the one in Hiroshima. You’ll learn more about this at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima which is a must visit AFTER seeing the dome.

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

The Japanese government could have demolished this site to rebuild a new one just like they did rest of Hiroshima. But they decided to keep it intact as a tragic reminder to continue their efforts in abolishing nuclear weapons and aim for world peace. Today Hiroshima Atomic Dome is a World Heritage Site.

Enola Gay, the war aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb called “little boy” over Hiroshima is kept at Udvar-Hazy Museum in Washington DC.

The Peace Memorial Museum

Without giving much away about the Peace Memorial all we’ll say is that it was an educational visit. It ‘s full of historic and scientific facts about nuclear weapons across the world. The museum also has a 3D video of the bombing incident which is enough to give you goosebumps.

Peace Memorial museum in Hiroshima

On the grounds surrounding the Peace Memorial lies Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima which is worth a stop to pay homage to all the kids who lost their lives in the tragedy. These two sites were pretty hard hitting with the tragic history as well as the summer heat.

There are a few other related sites in Hiroshima that the city bus stops at like, Hiroshima Castle,   the Peace Bell & the Cenotaph . We only stopped at the dome and peace memorial.

Miyajima (Itsukushima) Island

The Peace Memorial is bound to extract emotions out of you and Miyajima’s beautiful landscape will come in handy for recovery. Hence we would recommend going to Miyajima after you’ve visited Hiroshima.

Miyajima or Itsukushima is a beautiful island near Hiroshima

Getting from Hiroshima to Miyajima

The JR train from Hiroshima station will take you to Miyajimaguchi station. From Miyajimaguchi, you will see signs marked to walk towards the JR ferry entrance. This ferry is covered by JR Pass.  TIP:   Make sure to find out the last ferry timing so you don’t get stranded on the island.

How to go to Miyajima Island from Hiroshima ferry takes you over

Deers were anxiously waiting to welcome the next batch of visitors at the ferry station. Nara is not the only ones with them, Miyajima has its own share of deer too.

Exploring Miyajima

Officially called Itsukushima and fondly referred to as Miyajima, this small island holds a spiritual place amongst the locals. The popular Itsukushima Shrine is built over water. And so is the Great Torii gate which welcomes you to the island half floating over high tide water.

Deers at Miyajima sttaion entrance

TIP: Don’t miss tasting the local sweet delicacy called Momiji. Momiji means maple leaf in Japanese which is why the shape. Other activities in Miyajima are visiting Daisho-in Temple or hiking the island’s highest mountain, Mt. Misen.

If we had more time we would have loved to stay overnight in one of Miyajima’s Ryokans.

As always we hope you guys found this post helpful and you enjoy your trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima. Don’t forget to pin and share it with friends & family 🙂

Wow, this is so harrowing and such a sad moment in history. I hope we’ve learned from it. Thank you for visiting in a respectful way.

Thanks Lola! That’s the least we could do 🙂

Fantastic post with lots of beautiful photos (that sunset!) I’m so intrigued by the shot of the deer casually strolling into the store 🙂

It’s not even a store! It’s the information desk of the ferry docking station.. lol They are everywhere <3 Thanks Erin!

I didn’t make it to Miyajima but stopped at Hiroshima and the memorial – did you try their okonomiyaki?? Oh man, I would go back just for that 😉

Omg, I did not! Just googled to see what it is… I think I’ll have to go back to Japan just to try some authentic Okonomiyakis!! Thanks for that tip Mo! 😀

I had no idea you could visit Hiroshima as a day trip. I’ve always wanted to go to Kyoto—this would be a great addition to the itinerary. Thanks for sharing!

Luckily Japan is just awesome with its railway system. Super convenient to get to Hiroshima from Kyoto 🙂

Getting from Kyoto to Hiroshima by Train

On the way from Kyoto to Hiroshima , two of Japan's most historically relevant cities, enjoy the effortless efficiency of high-speed Japan bullet trains as you ride along on the Sanyo Shinkansen line . The two cities famously depict Japan's history, for many different reasons. Hiroshima , a city in constant reinvention, driven by hopes and the lessons of its tragic past are a highlight in Japan's modern history. Kyoto , the country's old capital, the city of a thousand temples, is a prime destination for Japanese visitors.

With its preserved cultural heritage and its many temples , shrines and historical landmarks, Kyoto offers a different experience than Hiroshima, which is not only known for its historical sights but also for its diverse local cuisine and its growing modern allure. Compared to the more serene Kyoto, Hiroshima boasts a more dynamic vibe , an atmosphere often enjoyed by visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions about Train Tickets in Japan

What is the Shinkansen bullet train?

The Shinkansen is the premier form of travel in Japan. “Shinkansen” is the Japanese word for “bullet train,” whose name is derived from the locomotive’s high speeds and shape. They are commonly used for traversing longer distances in Japan.

Should I book reserved seats on the Shinkansen?

Reserving seats on the Shinkansen bullet train isn’t a necessity; however, we do suggest making a reservation during peak travel times, specifically during Spring (sakura season) and during New Year's, for example. Trains may also be crowded during major holidays and events, such as large festivals. You’ll also need to make a reservation for oversized luggage on the Shinkansen.

What is the difference between the Ordinary Car, Green Car, and Gran Class Car on the Shinkansen?

  • There are different types of carriages on the Shinkansen, with different levels of accommodation. The Ordinary Car is the most general seating option, but Shinkansen bullet trains are, by default, more luxurious than other types of trains due to them being built for long-distance travel. These accommodations include reclinable chairs, overhead storage, hooks for outerwear, deployable trays, and electrical outlets.
  • The Green Car is the next step up in luxury from the ordinary car, featuring even deeper reclining chairs and more legroom. All seats in these cars need a reservation. The oversized luggage area is also included with a seat on the Green Car.
  • The Gran Class Car is much like the Green Car but with even more elevated accommodations. Seats are formatted 2x1, optimizing room, and often, snacks and refreshments are included. Gran Class cars exist only on JR East lines, such as Tokyo <-> Nagano and Tokyo <-> Kanazawa.

Why book your train ticket in Japan with us?

With over 40 years of dedicated experience dealing specifically with Japan travel and tourism, you can rest assured that we will have the best knowledge and familiarity with getting around the country. Our train tickets are acquired through an official partnership with JR West. We also offer reliable and expert assistance thanks to our onsite team in Japan, flexible modification options, and a fully digital booking experience with no hidden fees.

When will I receive my QR code?

If your train's departure date is more than one month away from the date of booking, you will receive your QR code approximately a month before departure.

If your train's departure date is less than one month away from the date of booking, you will receive your QR code within 48 hours.

Reminder : you can book train tickets in Japan with Japan Experience between 9 months and 3 days prior to train departure.

Can I bring large luggage onto the Shinkansen?

If you are traveling with luggage measuring less than 160cm (length + width + height), you do not need to make an extra reservation, and you can store your luggage in the overhead compartment above your seat.

For luggage measuring over 160cm and up to 250cm (length + width + height), you need to have made a prior reservation to be able to bring your luggage on the Shinkansen. Onboard, you will have to store your luggage in the designated oversize luggage areas, usually behind the last seats of the car, and in special compartments in the area between cars. This includes luggage such as sport equipment, musical instruments, and baby strollers.

As we do not offer seat reservation bookings yet, you will need to reserve your extra luggage space in the Shinkansen in stations at JR seat reservation ticket machines before your train's departure. To do so, you will need to make a modification on your ticket at said ticket machines. This modification is included in your booking, as you have one free modification possible.

Luggage measuring over 250cm (length + width + height) are not allowed onboard the Shinkansen. Each passenger can bring up to two pieces of luggage onboard the Shinkansen.

You can find more details about luggage rules aboard the Shinkansen here .

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

Hiroshima is a city with deep historical roots, evident in its ancient gardens and castles. During the 20h century, Hiroshima became the center of unenviable international attention after the first atomic bomb was detonated there on August 6, 1945 – destroying everything within two kilometers of impact.

Like the phoenix of legend, Hiroshima and its residents emerged from the ashes. Historical structures were restored, and the city took on aspirations of continued peace. Today, it is home to over one million people and a favorite stop for international tourists, thanks to the bullet train .

Where is Hiroshima

Hiroshima is the capital of the Hiroshima Prefecture and the largest city in the Chugoku region of western Honshu (main Japanese island).

You will find travel to the deeply meaningful city of Hiroshima a breeze when using your Japan Rail Pass . Please be aware that Nozomi and Mizuho trains are not currently included, but you can ride them by paying a supplement from October 2023.

Tokyo to Hiroshima by train

You can use your JR Pass to take the Tokaido Shinkansen line’s Hikari bullet train from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station , Shin-Kobe Station or Himeji Station.

Once in one of these stations, you can transfer to the Sanyo Shinkansen (Sakura train) and arrive in Hiroshima at Hiroshima Station.

This trip takes approximately five hours to complete. Non-shinkansen train lines are also available, as is an overnight bus. Several 90-minute flights also connect the Tokyo and Hiroshima airports each day.

Kyoto to Hiroshima

Kyoto and Hiroshima are connected by the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines . You can use your JR Pass and the journey between Kyoto Station and Hiroshima Station takes 1 hour 40 minutes . The Nozomi Shinkansen trains only take 1 hour 15 minutes: you will be able to ride them with your pass from October 2023 if you pay a supplement.

If you catch a Hikari or Sakura Shinkansen train , you may have to make a transfer at Shin-Osaka Station or Shin-Kobe Station . Either way, it will only add 10-15 minutes to your journey. If you do not have a JR Pass, an unreserved seat costs 10,570 yen (an additional 510 yen for a reserved seat).

Osaka to Hiroshima

The quickest way to get to Hiroshima from Osaka is to catch a bullet train on the Sanyo line . The fastest train covered by the JR pass is the Sakura train which takes 1 hour 32 minutes . The Mizuho and Nozomi trains take 1 hour 25 minutes.

If you do not have a JR Pass, the cheapest way of making the journey is to catch a regular train. It takes 6 hours and you have to make several transfers but it only costs 5,620 yen (much cheaper than an individual ticket for a bullet train). However, if you plan to make just a couple of journeys in Japan, it makes sense to get the JR Pass.

Check out our article How to get from Osaka to Hiroshima for more information about this journey.

Bullet train in JR Hiroshima station

Airport transfer to Hiroshima Airport

If you are flying into Hiroshima Airport, the city center can be reached by the shuttle bus . The bus ride lasts approximately 50 minutes.

But the best option is to take the so-called  Shiraichi Route (a combination of the JR Sanyo Shinkansen line and the shuttle bus). Take the shuttle bus from Hiroshima Airport and drop off after 15 minutes in  JR Shiraichi  Station (the closest JR station of Hiroshima Airport).

There you will be able to take the train to Hiroshima Station, where you can also exchange your Japan Rail Pass. This route is less affected by congestion on the Sanyo Expressway, and is less expensive .

Things to do in Hiroshima

Whether you come to contemplate the past, look to the future, or enjoy the beauty of nature, Hiroshima is home to several attractions that can be found nowhere else in the world .

Peace Memorial Park

Standing in contrast to the surrounding urban structures is the Heiwa Kinen Kōen , or Peace Memorial Park. This 120,000 square meter park marks the target of the atomic bomb . The area had been the center of commerce and politics in Hiroshima, but four years after the disaster it was decided that this portion of the city would not be rebuilt – it would stand forever as a symbol to honor the memory of nuclear horrors and advocate world  peace .

The park is home to the Peace Memorial Museum , which details Hiroshima’s history, the advent of atomic weapons, and the human suffering that followed. This moving exhibit includes graphic elements that may be disturbing to some visitors. This, however, makes the point that peace should not be taken for granted. A nearby tomb, called the Cenotaph , holds a register of over 220,000 names of victims of the blast. This monument is aligned to frame the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome, making for great, symbolic pictures.

Also on the grounds is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, or Atomic Bomb Dome ( A-Bomb Dome). Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site , this building was formerly known as the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. The Hiroshima City Council decided in 1966 to indefinitely preserve the structure, so the shell that remains provides a tangible and undeniable connection to the events of that fateful day.

Cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace Park

Hiroshima Castle

Also called the Carp Castle , this five-story structure was originally built in 1589.  The castle served as the seat of power as well as Hiroshima’s economic center. The original castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb but has since been rebuilt in the traditional fashion . Along with the castle, its moat, shrine, and Ninomaru , or second circle of defense, were also reconstructed. The castle now houses a museum and visitors can enjoy scenic views of the city from its top floor.

Hiroshima castle by the Motoyasu River

Shukkeien Garden

Constructed in 1620, this garden’s name literally means “garden of shrunken scenery.” The carefully cultivated plants and features mimic in miniature a mountainous, forested landscape. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views from the comfort of several tea houses , located around the pond.

Getting around Hiroshima

While traveling in and around Hiroshima, you may take advantage of the city’s t ram network . The eight tram lines are extensive – the largest in Japan – with four of the lines passing through the main train station. Please note, however, that your JR Rail Pass is not valid on the tram lines. One-day passes for the tram lines can be purchased for ¥600.

City buses provide another good transportation option . The Maple-oop (a combination of the word “maple” with the term “loop bus”) bus provides free transportation for JR Pass holders. This bus runs twice per hour and serves the train station, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, Shukkeien, and other locations.

Miyajima ferry

Did you know that your Japan Rail Pass  allows free passage on the ferries to nearby Miyajima Island as well? Check out our Miyajima travel guide for more on this small island famous for its torii gate and scenic views.

The great Torii in Miyajima marks the limit between the spirit and the human worlds.

Option 1 – take bus all the way from Hiroshima station to Hiroshima airport; is it covered by the JR pass?

Option 2 – take train between Hiroshima station and Shiraichi station then transfer to bus to continue going to airport; is it covered by the JR pass?

Dear Sir/madam, we’re planning to cycle from Tokyo to Hiroshima, and back to Tokyo by public transport (train/bus) with our bicycles. it’s possible to travel with our bicycles? regards, Ruben

Hello, We have purchased out Japan Rail Pass and will be Arriving in Tokyo July 2. We want to travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima on the overnight train July 4. How do we make our reservations ahead of time? We are a family of four.

Hi Glenn! No seat reservations are available until the Japan Rail Pass is exchanged, which has to be done in Japan. Once this is done you’ll just need to take your Japan Rail Pass to any JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi), spread through all Japanese train stations. Happy travels!

We are flying into Osaka on 14 April around 1:10pm, and we wanted to go to Hiroshima on the same day and then travel back to our hotel that night.

is that possible, what would be the quickest way to do this

Hi Dee! Hiroshima is one of the most popular day trips from Osaka since you can take a JR train with your Japan Rail Pass . However please make sure to check carefully the operation hours at Hyperdia since timing may be tight. Happy travels!

We are staying in Osaka and going to travel to Hiroshima and Miyajima. Would a stop in Himeji be possible on the Sanyo line?

Hi Barri! Yes, it is possible with your Japan Rail Pass . The Sanyo Shinkansen line has stops in Osaka, Himeji and Hiroshima. We would recommend you to take the Hikari train from Osaka to Himeji and then to reach Hiroshima from Himeji you will have to take the Kodama (slowest service on the Sanyo line since it makes more stops). Happy travels!

I need to travel from Hiroshima station back to Tokyo, may I know what is the best JR line I should take ?

Thank you for your advise.

Hi Jovi! You can first take the Sanyo Shinkansen (Sakura train) from Hiroshima at Hiroshima Station to Shin-Osaka Station, Shin-Kobe Station or Himeji Station. From there, you can transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen line’s Hikari bullet train to Tokyo Station using your Japan Rail Pass . Happy travels!

A Kyoto Travel Guide

How to Get To Hiroshima And Miyajima

Located in Western Honshu (Japan’s main island), Hiroshima is less than two hours from Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe) and four hours from Tokyo by shinkansen (bullet train). Miyajima is just a short hop from Hiroshima. Here is everything you need to know.

Shinkansen in hiroshima. Editorial credit: 10 FACE / Shutterstock.com

The Takeaway

  • The shinkansen (bullet train) is the best way to travel from the main cities of Honshu (Japan’s main island) to Hiroshima. Here are the fares and times:
  • Tokyo > Hiroshima: 4 hours, Y18,040 by Nozomi shinkansen
  • Kyoto > Hiroshima: 1 hour and 40 minutes, Y10,570 by Nozomi shinkansen
  • Osaka > Hiroshima: 1 hour and 26 minutes, Y9,710 by Nozomi shinkansen
  • You can also use a Japan Rail Pass to travel to Hiroshima, but only on certain trains. See below for full details.

Daiwa Roynet Hotel Hiroshima

The Details

Unless you’re coming from a place like Hokkaido or Tohoku (northern Japan), the best way to get to Hiroshima is by shinkansen (bullet train). Yes, you can fly from Osaka or Tokyo, but once you factor in the time it takes to get to/from airports and check-in etc, the train is usually faster.

Getting to Hiroshima by Train from Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo etc

Hiroshima is on the main shinkansen line that runs from Tokyo all the way down to Kyushu. See above for times and fares from Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. The fastest trains are the Nozomi shinkansen, which usually run direct from these cities to Hiroshima (and sometimes beyond). You can buy shinkansen tickets online through an official JR Rail partner:

  • Tokyo to Hiroshima shinkansen tickets
  • Kyoto to Hiroshima shinkansen tickets
  • Osaka to Hiroshima shinkansen tickets

Important Note for Japan Rail Pass Holders

If you are paying cash for your shinkansen tickets, you can take the fastest type of shinkansen (the Nozomi) all the way out to Hiroshima from Kyoto, Osaka or Tokyo without having to change trains. There are multiple direct departures every hours from about 8am to 8pm.

However, if you are traveling with a Japan Rail Pass, you cannot ride the Nozomi; you can only ride the slower Hikari, Sakura or Kodama shinkansen on this line. The best route usually involves taking a Hikari shinkansen to Shin-Osaka (Osaka’s shinkansen station) from Tokyo or Kyoto and changing to a Sakura shinkansen there.

You can buy the Japan Rail Pass online at an official partner of JR Rail.

See our detailed guide to buying and making the most of a Japan Rail Pass if you’re undecided about getting one.

Hiroshima to host annual international talks on Antarctic in 2026

April 23, 2024 (Mainichi Japan)

travel from kyoto to hiroshima

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said Tuesday that Hiroshima will host an annual gathering involving countries related to the Antarctic treaty in or around May of 2026 to discuss issues regarding the continent.

The city in western Japan, where Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hosted the Group of Seven summit in May last year, was picked as the venue for the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting through a public offering, Kamikawa said at a press conference.

Hiroshima, which was devastated by a U.S. atomic bomb in 1945, is "suitable for representing the spirit of the treaty," as its basic principles include the peaceful use of Antarctica and the prohibition of nuclear explosions and radioactive material processing, she said.

Kamikawa added the continent is an important place to encourage international cooperation. It will be the first time Japan has hosted the gathering since 1994, when the meeting took place in Kyoto in western Japan.

The treaty took effect in 1961 and talks have been held annually since 1994.

New private rooms on Tokaido Shinkansen change the way we travel from Tokyo to Kyoto

Japan currently has 10 shinkansen (bullet train) lines to shuttle passengers around Japan at super high speeds, but the busiest by far is the Tokaido Shinkansen, which has been known to operate over 470 trains along the route in a single day. The Tokaido Shinkansen stretches from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka, making it the one that foreign tourists to the country are most familiar with, and soon there’ll be a new class of seat onboard that promises to be even more luxurious than the current first class-style Green Car option.

The Tokaido Shinkansen will soon have private rooms.

According to the operators of the line, Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), the private rooms are part of the company’s desire to respond to the diversifying needs of customers’ changing life and work styles, and improve the business environment on board. Though they initially considered improving the Green Cars, which are predominantly used by business travellers, they decided to go above and beyond by creating private spaces that offer even higher quality facilities and services.

Screenshot-2024-04-23-at-8.29.49.png

The new private rooms will be equipped on a number of N700S trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen route, with initially two per train. Each room will provide a high level of privacy, with some of the perks being free Wi-Fi, adjustable lighting, and a reclining seat with leg rest.

Screenshot-2024-04-23-at-8.29.56.png

Other facilities planned for the rooms are an air conditioning panel and volume controls for the onboard announcements, allowing you to adjust the sound and temperature levels as well as the lighting to suit your personal needs.

Screenshot-2024-04-23-at-8.30.08.png

While the rooms are aimed at business travellers who might want to hold online meetings or make phone calls during their journey, anyone who wants to relax and enjoy some privacy will benefit from the new setup.

The private rooms will offer the highest level of comfort and privacy onboard a Japanese bullet train, and it’s one that’s set to be popular when it’s introduced in 2026. Further details regarding room specifications, services, operating zones and prices will be announced closer to the rollout date.

Another way to satisfy "the diversifying needs of customers’ changing life and work styles" would be to make the Shinkansen cheaper. For locals that is, not foreign tourists.

This room has only one seat, so its for posh people travelling alone. I've never got on the Shinkansen and thought "Jeez, I wish this was more like a private plane".

"New private rooms on Tokaido Shinkansen change the way we travel from Tokyo to Kyoto"

I do not know if "we" is the operative word in the headline, "they" would probably be more accurate as ordinary people won't be able to afford it.
