Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

Ashley Kosciolek

As demand for travel soars and everything from weather to staffing issues leads to higher prices and cancellations, it's more important than ever to protect your trip arrangements with travel insurance .

However, it's not always easy figuring out which type of plan to pick. There are standard policies that cover general delays, interruptions and cancellations; "cancel for any reason" plans that account for personal whims in addition to unforeseen circumstances; and lesser-known annual options.

In this article, I'll go over what you need to know about the third type: annual travel insurance coverage.

What is annual travel insurance?

travel insurance annual plan promotion

Annual travel insurance plans (also known as multi-trip plans) last for one year and generally cover all trips taken within that period until either the policy expires or the maximum payout amounts are reached. The policy usually kicks in for trips that take you more than a certain distance from home.

For example, my Allianz AllTrips Prime annual plan remains in effect for one year following the purchase date of my policy. I'm covered on all trips during which I'm at least 100 miles from my residence.

This differs from standard travel insurance, which is purchased on a per-trip basis and covers only one specifically insured journey per policy. Standard policies begin when travel for the insured trip begins and end when the insured trip ends, rather than covering multiple travel experiences within a specific period of time.

What does annual travel insurance cover?

Coverage depends on the plan you purchase. There are usually several tiers from which to choose, with the lowest offering the least coverage and the highest offering the most.

Using my policy as an example, I'm covered for up to $3,000 per year in trip interruption expenses, including hotel room coverage at $250 per night, which I used when I was recently isolated for 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19.

My policy also offers a $3,000 annual trip cancellation benefit, $20,000 in emergency medical coverage, $100,000 in emergency transportation (including medevac services), $45,000 in rental car theft and damage protection, $25,000 in travel accident coverage and $1,000 for essentials in the event of baggage loss or damage, along with a handful of other small benefits.

Note that many annual policies do not include things like "cancel for any reason" coverage or trip interruption benefits. If those items are important to you, check with your provider before making a purchase.

How much is an annual travel insurance policy?

Sure, an annual travel insurance policy may sound great, but how much does one cost? I was surprised to find that insuring your trips for a whole year with an annual policy is often not much more expensive than insuring one or two trips individually, depending on the options you select.

A decent annual travel insurance plan will likely set you back a couple hundred dollars. The more coverage you add, the more expensive the plan will become. The cost also changes depending on variables like your age and where you live.

The best thing to do is contact your preferred provider for a quote or check out an aggregator like InsureMyTrip to compare premiums.

Which companies offer annual travel insurance plans?

travel insurance annual plan promotion

The Points Guy recommends the following travel insurance providers , all of which sell annual or semi-annual policies:

  • Allianz Travel Insurance .
  • Seven Corners .
  • Travel Guard .
  • World Nomads .

When should I purchase annual travel insurance?

There are several reasons why annual travel insurance might be better for you than separate policies for individual trips. If you travel a lot — more than two or three times annually — it could be more cost-effective than purchasing separate policies for each journey.

For me, it makes sense because I travel for a living, often taking a dozen or more trips each year. Also, much of my travel is comped, which makes insurance more difficult to acquire. (If I haven't paid for a cruise, flight or hotel, I can't attach a dollar amount to it and, therefore, often can't insure it. I also wouldn't be able to provide purchase receipts in the event something went wrong and had to file a claim.)

Other factors to consider include your health, how adventurous your travels might be, whether you have coverage as a credit card perk and how much your travel arrangements cost versus how much coverage you can get with an annual plan versus individual policies.

Another consideration right now is COVID-19. For me, the annual plan made sense because most of Allianz's individual plans don't cover issues linked to COVID-19. However, the annual coverage I purchased does.

Other things to know about annual travel insurance policies

Here are a few additional tidbits I learned after filing a trip interruption claim under my annual travel insurance policy. Keep them in mind when deciding if an annual policy is right for you.

  • Before committing to the purchase of any travel insurance plan, make sure to inquire about specific components that are important to you. For me, those were COVID-19 coverage, trip interruption benefits and medevac coverage.
  • Know that your coverage does not reset each time you travel when you opt for an annual policy. So, if you have a trip that goes awry, you file a claim and you max out the benefit allowed by your plan, you won't have that benefit available to you for the remainder of your policy year.
  • Depending on your policy, you might have to return home between travel sessions in order for each trip to be covered. Taking several back-to-back trips could prevent them from qualifying for coverage under your annual insurance plan, so be sure to read the fine print, and plan accordingly.
  • If you purchase annual or multi-trip travel insurance, keep your policy card and provider phone number with the other important documents you bring when you travel so they're easily accessible in a pinch.
  • If you find yourself in a covered situation for which you'd like to seek reimbursement, keep all receipts and take photos that will help to support your claims when they're submitted.
  • Don't assume all your expenses will be reimbursed, even if you think they'll be covered. It doesn't hurt to try, but in my case, my Allianz plan only partially covered the hotel expenses I submitted.

What is annual travel insurance?

Annual travel insurance (also called multi-trip insurance) covers several trips throughout the year. It covers medical emergencies, evacuation, travel delays, and baggage. Some plans cover costs for a trip cut short (trip interruption).

Annual plans cover each trip while you are traveling. It is not meant to be year-round insurance. It covers multiple trips, but there is a limit for how long any single trip can be. For example: You could be covered for every trip, but any single trip must be 30 days or less.

Annual plans don’t cover canceled trips. If you are taking a vacation and want to insure the cost of the trip, you need single-trip travel insurance. This type of plan covers cancellation, interruption, delays, baggage, and more. Read more about the best travel insurance plans here .

What does annual travel insurance cover?

The following coverage is typically found in an annual trip insurance plan.

Emergency Medical Expenses Coverage for emergency medical and dental care , including hospital visits, surgery, prescription drugs, doctor and dentist office visits, and more.

Medical Evacuation Emergency medical transportation so you can receive medical care for your illness or injury.

Travel Delays Reimbursement for unexpected lodging, meals, and transportation costs if your travel is delayed a certain number of hours (usually 6-12).

Baggage Loss, Theft, or Damage Reimbursement for lost, stolen, or destroyed baggage and personal effects (up to the policy limit) whether they are lost or destroyed by the airline, a taxi driver, a hotel employee, or anyone else.

Delayed Baggage Reimbursement (up to the policy limit) for personal essentials if your baggage is delayed a certain number of hours (usually between 12 and 24 ).

Travel Assistance The convenience of 24/7 travel assistance services for help with medical emergencies, travel emergencies, business emergencies, pre-trip planning, and more.

What is the difference between single trip and annual travel insurance?

The main difference between annual travel insurance and a single-trip plan is coverage for cancelled trips. Annual plans do not cover trip cancellation; single-trip travel insurance does cover trip cancellation.

If you’re planning a vacation and want to cover the costs of that trip, you are looking for single-trip insurance.

Annual plans are for people that take several trips in a year, and don’t want coverage for trip cancellation.

What makes worldwide annual travel insurance unique?

Many travelers like the convenience and savings of a worldwide annual trip insurance plan.

Same worldwide coverage for 12 full months

The reason many travelers like an annual trip insurance plan is the convenience of having the same coverage for all their travel plans all year long. Most plans have a long per-trip length limit (usually 30-70 days). One policy to read and understand; only one number to call for travel assistance services.

Comprehensive and economical

Annual plans are relatively cost-effective because the coverage for cancellation is not included (some plans offer limited trip cancellation coverage). Age is taken into account, but most annual plans run a few hundred dollars per year, per traveler.

Key difference is no (or little) trip cancellation coverage

As we talked about above, a main difference with an annual plan is the lack of trip cancellation coverage.

Insurance companies can’t include this because their risk exposure would vary so much. One travelers might have an annual trip cost of $5,000, while another traveler could spend $100,000 a year on travel. Single-trip travel insurance is priced based largely on trip cost. The insurance company can’t charge the same for the $5,000 traveler as the $100,000 traveler.

Who should buy annual travel insurance?

Travelers like these should purchase annual travel insurance:

Frequent travelers, such as business owners and academics When much of your time is consumed by traveling for your work or study, it’s difficult to research travel insurance for each trip and much more economical to have one plan with consistent coverage you understand all year long.

Active, healthy, traveling retirees You may have waited all your life for your retirement and want to put as many trips on the schedule as possible. Of course, you want the safety of travel insurance on each of those trips too.

Journalists and writers frequently sent on last-minute assignments When you have to travel often at the last minute, there’s no time to understand, purchase, and review a single-trip policy. Plus, it’s useful to have the same coverage all year round so you know what to expect without having to sign up for new coverage every time.

How much does annual trip insurance cost?

Most full-featured annual multi-trip insurance plans will cost a traveler $200-$400, depending on these factors:

  • The traveler’s age (primary factor)
  • The estimated number of days for the longest trip of the year
  • Medical limit ($50,000 is cheaper than $1,000,000)
  • Deductible ($1,000 deductible is cheaper that $0)
  • Options like Hazardous Activities coverage

Is it worth buying annual travel coverage?

It depends on the types of trips you’re planning. For lower-cost trips, like domestic trips or road trips where your primary concern is catastrophic needs like medical expenses and evacuations, an annual plan might be your best option.

Here’s how you know it’s worth getting annual travel coverage:

  • If you’re taking a lot of trips within a year.
  • If you’re not concerned about trip cancellation benefits.
  • If you take last-minute trips and want the convenience of the same travel insurance all year long.
  • If you’re a business traveler who frequently travels alone or on short notice.

Tip : Because an annual travel insurance plan covers all your trips in a year, it’s not necessary to know how many trips you’ll take ahead of time.

Annual Travel Insurance FAQs

Annual plans are purchased to cover all trips within a 365 day period. You would choose when the coverage starts, and the insurance policy is active for the following year. There may be a limit on the length of any given trip within that year. Most companies allow you to renew after the first year is up.

Single-trip insurance is meant to cover one trip, such as a vacation or cruise, in case you need to cancel your trip. It also covers medical, evacuation, baggage, and delays. Annual travel insurance covers several trips throughout the year, but does not cover cancellation for any of them.

Because it runs for 365 days from purchase, you should buy annual travel insurance right before the first trip you want to insure. This will maximize the amount of time of coverage.

Annual travel insurance covers you for 365 days, and are often renewable.

Annual travel insurance is typically purchased in a single payment.

Annual travel insurance is available from Seven Corners, Trawick, GeoBlue, and Travel Guard. I recommend Seven Corners’ Wander plan.

You would consider annual travel insurance if you take several trips throughout the year, and want the medical and loss benefits of travel insurance for each one. This is simpler than buying a plan for each trip separately.

What does annual travel insurance cover?

Single trip insurance vs. multi-trip travel insurance, how does annual travel insurance work, annual travel insurance plans, is annual travel insurance worth it, caveats to yearly travel insurance, if you're considering multi-trip travel insurance.

Are you hoping to fill your annual calendar with multiple travel adventures? When you’re heading out on a trip, travel insurance may provide peace of mind in case things go awry. It can provide protection in the event of unexpected injury and illness, no matter where you are.

For frequent travelers, sometimes a single-trip travel insurance policy just doesn’t cut it. Let’s take a look at when to buy annual travel insurance, what annual multi-trip insurance is and whether you should invest in this product.

For those who aren’t familiar with travel insurance, it basically works like this: Your personal insurance covers you when you’re at home. Travel insurance does the same when you’re abroad.

There are different levels and kinds of insurance, including those that’ll reimburse you if you have to quarantine, ones that let you cancel for any reason and even policies that cover emergency evacuation services.

Some common types of travel insurance include:

Health insurance .

Lost luggage insurance .

Trip cancellation insurance .

Accidental death insurance .

Rental car insurance .

Trip interruption insurance .

Cancel For Any Reason insurance .

Emergency evacuation insurance .

Most travel insurance policies will offer different levels of coverage for the different types outlined above. In some cases, you can customize your coverage to better meet your needs instead of opting for base-level policy inclusions.

» Learn more: What does travel insurance cover?

Here's a high-level overview of how annual travel insurance policies differ from single trip plans.

Yearly travel insurance works a little bit differently than single-trip insurance. For the most part, you won’t find an annual travel insurance policy that covers extras such as baggage loss or rental car insurance, though you may find some that cover trip interruption and cancellation.

Why is annual travel insurance cheaper than single trip? Multi-trip insurance focuses mainly on medical policies, while single-trip policies can cover a broader range of issues.

In general, annual travel insurance will cover you in the event that you need medical care while traveling overseas. Different policies will have different coverage. Some can include hazardous sports such as skiing and scuba diving, while others will include care in the event you fall ill with COVID-19.

Check whether your medical care is primary or secondary; secondary medical insurance only pays out after other eligible insurances have made their payments.

If you’re looking to be covered for specific needs, be sure to double-check any policy before you decide to purchase it.

Purchasing an annual or multi-trip travel insurance plan doesn’t have to be expensive. Of course, you’ll want to get quotes before going forward with any purchase, so it’s best to do your homework ahead of time.

We put in a search for annual travel insurance plans using a 31-year-old traveling from California to Europe among three different policy providers.

1. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide came in at the cheapest for just $52 for the year, though at that price range it didn’t include trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance.

It was possible to add these in, but it increased the price appropriately. Otherwise, the plan offered $10,000 in emergency medical, $100 for baggage delay, $100 for trip delay and $500 for lost luggage

For our sample itinerary, Allianz offered three different annual travel insurance plans with varying levels of coverage — Executive, Prime and Basic.

The cheapest rang in at $138 for the year but also failed to include trip interruption, while the most expensive option would cost this travel $510.

Allianz’s lowest-cost option (Basic) provided $20,000 in emergency medical and $1,000 for baggage loss, as well as $45,000 for rental car insurance .

3. AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard returned just one option for multi-trip travel insurance, costing $259 for the year.

However, the increased price seems worth it for the additional coverage, which included $2,500 in trip interruption, $1,500 for trip delay, $500 for missed connections, $2,500 for lost baggage, $1,000 for delayed luggage and $50,000 for emergency medical.

There are a few different questions you’ll want to consider before purchasing travel insurance. This is true whether you’re looking for a single-trip policy or a plan that covers you for an entire year.

How often will you travel?

This is probably the most obvious question you’ll want to answer: How often do you travel? Are you out of town frequently? Do you stay out of the country for longer periods of time?

If you’re someone who goes on one or two vacations per year, for a week or two at a time, it may not be worth purchasing annual travel insurance. Although it’s cheaper than single-trip insurance, the benefits that you’ll receive are reduced accordingly.

What kind of trips are you taking?

How expensive are your trips? What about the chance for illness or accidental injury? Are you certain that you’ll be going on your trip, or is there the chance that you’ll need to cancel?

Multi-trip travel insurance is inherently limited due to its length of coverage. If your trip has a lot of components and opportunities for things to go awry, you may want to consider instead purchasing a single-trip policy.

As we noted above, these types of policies have a much broader area of coverage. This includes options such as cancel for any reason insurance and trip delay insurance.

Do you have any pre-existing conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are those that you have had prior to purchasing insurance. Let’s say that you tore your hamstring last year. After completing a round of physical therapy, you’re doing pretty well, though sometimes you still struggle with pain.

Some annual travel insurance policies will cover acute flare-ups of pre-existing conditions. This means that if your sore hamstring is suddenly aggravated to the point of needing crutches, they will cover the cost of that care.

Some policies do not; they will have a specific clause excluding any pre-existing conditions from your medical care.

Did you know that many travel credit cards provide complimentary travel insurance? If you book and pay for your trip using your card, you may be eligible for this insurance.

Examples of travel insurance offered by credit cards include:

Rental car insurance.

Emergency medical insurance.

Yearly travel insurance may be a good option for you if you’re often on the road, but keep in mind that there are limits to the product.

For example, many travel insurance plans limit the amount of time you can spend on each trip. This is true for policy provider Heymondo, whose 12-month plan stipulates that your trip duration be less than 60 days.

Other plans may only apply outside the United States. This is the case for GeoBlue , whose travel medical insurance doesn’t cover you when you’re home.

Yes. Depending on the provider, you can purchase multi-trip or an annual travel insurance plan.

The biggest difference with annual travel insurance is it doesn't have as many covered benefits as the individual single-trip plans, as one of the main focuses of annual travel insurance is medical emergencies.

To determine which plan type is right for you, ask yourself questions such as:

How often are you traveling?

Are the trips expensive?

Do you have any credit cards with travel insurance coverage ?

Although cheaper, multi-trip or annual travel insurance are policies that cover multiple trips over a specific time frame. Policies have less coverage than single-trip policies. Generally, single-trip policies have baggage loss or rental car insurance, whereas annual travel insurance does not.

The average cost of a travel insurance policy varies on the coverage provided and the length of the trip. It's typically a percentage of your overall trip cost. On the high end, you can estimate up to 10% of your trip expenses. On the low-to-mid scale, you can estimate 4-8% of your anticipated trip costs.

Yes, you can buy annual or multi-trip travel insurance policies, which can be a good option for extensive trips. Note that these plans differ from single-trip policies in terms of coverage. Annual plans tend to focus on medical emergencies, whereas individual plans offer more robust travel-related coverages (such as baggage or trip delay).

Multi-trip insurance covers an unlimited number of trips during your coverage period. However, the length of time for your period is going to depend on your specific policy. Many multi-trip plans can be purchased as annual travel insurance, which will cover you up to 365 days.

It’s possible to cancel any insurance policy that you buy, but only during specific periods. This is called the "lookback" or review period. In most states, the lookback period lasts up to 15 days, during which time you can cancel your insurance without penalty.

Do you have any

credit cards with travel insurance coverage

Multi-trip travel insurance can be a cheap, affordable way to make sure you’re covered if you’re a frequent traveler. However, you’ll also want to understand the limitations of year-long policies. Although they can be less expensive than policies that cover a single trip, you can also expect to have less coverage.

Annual travel policies tend to focus more on medical care and — in limited circumstances — trip cancellation or trip interruption. However, if your needs include the ability to cancel your trip for any reason, or extras such as baggage insurance, you may want to consider purchasing a single-trip policy instead.

Finally, if you hold a travel credit card, odds are good that it comes with some form of travel insurance. Check out its guide to benefits to see what types of coverage your card offers, whether it’s emergency medical evacuation or trip delay reimbursement.

If you are purchasing a new policy, we have extended the TravelSmart Premier policy to cover certain situations pertaining to COVID-19. This means that for some benefits, cover is expanded to include losses occurring after COVID-19 was a known event and could reasonably have been expected to lead to a claim. For a detailed summary of what is covered or not covered for COVID-19, please refer to the policy wording.

Before purchasing the policy, please note that: • Your Trip is under the latest permitted travel arrangement as per Singapore Government travel advisory. • For single-trip policies and annual multi-trip policies, the extension only applies if the trip is no longer than 90 days in a row. • The extension is applicable to Elite and Classic plans only. • You are not serving stay home notice or quarantined due to COVID-19 or traveled to any countries other than the list of countries permitted as per Singapore Government travel advisory within 14 days before your trip started. • If required by authorities, you must take a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test or any COVID-19 equivalent test approved by Singapore authorities within 72 hours before the start of your trip and you must be tested negative. Otherwise, there is no cover under section 38a - Medical expenses while overseas, section 38b - Emergency medical evacuation, section 38c - Repatriation, section 38g - Automatic extension of cover, section 38h – Overseas quarantine allowance and section 38i - Overseas hospital allowance of this extension. • We will not cover if you, a relative, or a travel companion is diagnosed (or suspected of being infected) with Covid-19 at the point of purchase of this policy or trip.

Yes, child below 18 years old can apply for any plans under an individual cover, provided the proposal is made in the parent or adult guardian's name. Child below 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult (parent or guardian) for the entire trip. Please note that child benefits apply.

Q20: Can I purchase travel insurance if I am already overseas?

No, you will need to purchase your travel insurance before setting off for your overseas trip from Singapore. We strongly encourage you to purchase early before departure as our travel insurance provides pre-journey coverage as well.

Q21: If I have pre-existing illness, can I still purchase travel insurance?

Yes, you may still buy the policy. However, please note that the policy does not cover any loss, damage or liability directly or indirectly arising as a result of any pre-existing medical condition. For more information, please refer to your policy documents.

Q22: I will be travelling to more than two countries and will be back to Singapore before flying to the next country (e.g. Singapore > Bangkok > Singapore > Seoul> Singapore). Can I purchase one single trip policy for the entire journey in this case?

Sounds like a great trip! In this case, you will need to buy 2 separate single trip policies because the coverage for a single trip policy ends when you return to Singapore. Alternatively if you travel more than 3 times a year, an annual policy would be recommended as your insurance costs will be considerably cheaper compared to buying a single trip travel policy each and every time.

Q23: I’m travelling to more than one country during my trip. Can I still get a policy?

Yes, please select all destinations on your itinerary.

Q24: If I am travelling overseas to seek medical treatment, can I take up travel insurance?

Our policy covers people who are travelling overseas for business or for holiday. It is not intended to cover people who are travelling to seek medical treatment.

Q25: If I am only travelling one-way, will I be able to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, please select one-way trip. Your cover will cease when you arrive at your place of residence or workplace in the destination country within 4 days, or 3 hours after you have cleared immigration in the destination country, whichever is earlier.

Q26: Does the policy cover business travel?

Yes. Your policy will cover you for business travel except for • any loss, damage or liability arising as a result of manual or hazardous work; • travel relating to your job as a licensed tour guide or staff of a travel agency; • you taking part in naval, military, air force, civil defence or police training, duties, services or operations. For more information, please refer to the policy document.

Q27: What is the maximum period of coverage for an overseas trip?

• For Single Trip Policy: 182 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan. • For an Annual Multi-Trip Policy: 90 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan.

Q28: When will the coverage for my travel policy start?

Our pre-journey benefits provide coverage for trip cancellation and postponement 30 days before your departure date or policy issuance date, whichever is later. For all other benefits, the coverage starts after departure from Singapore.

Q29: I am stranded in a country and my policy is expiring. Can it be extended?

The Policy will be automatically extended (all plans except Basic Plan) without any additional premium for: • Up to a maximum of 30 days if you are hospitalised and quarantined overseas as advised by the attending medical practitioner. • Up to a maximum of 7 days if: a) The conveyance in which you are travelling is delayed through no act or omission of you. b) The airport or seaport is closed due to adverse weather conditions, strike, riot or civil commotion with the result that the Trip is not completed when the Period of Insurance ceases.

Q30: What are some of TravelSmart Premier’s general exclusions?

TravelSmart Premier does not cover any loss, injury or damage arising if: • You have a pre-existing medical condition. • You are not fit to travel or are travelling against the advice of a doctor. • Any strike, riot, civil commotion, dangerous health threat, natural disaster or any events in the destination you are traveling to which a government or any relevant authority issued a public warning or statement about before you left Singapore. Comparing Travel Insurers with the Best Ongoing Promotions

We analysed hundreds of premiums and benefits from dozens of car insurers in Singapore to find out insurers offer the best promotions to save you the most money.

  • Best Budget Plan Etiqa Tiq Travel Insurance
  • Best Value Global Travel Insurance HL Assurance TravelProtect 360
  • Best for Trip Inconvenience Allianz Travel
  • Best for Families MSIG TravelEasy

Best Travel Insurance Promotion: FWD

FWD's travel insurance is a good option whether you're travelling alone, as a group or with a family due to its robust benefits and attractive prices that will appeal to a wide consumer base. FWD's 20-25% off promotions come on top of already competitive prices, which makes any of its 3 travel insurance plans great value options. Regardless of destination or trip duration, FWD's premiums end up 15-30% below average, while still providing coverage that extends beyond basic medical and trip inconvenience.

For instance, it includes coverage for loss of passport and money theft, travel agency insolvency and payment of rental car excess, as well as up to S$2,000 of coverage for your sports equipment that costs only an additional S$37.54.

For instance, it includes coverage for loss of passport and money theft, travel agency insolvency and payment of rental car excess, as well as up to S$2,000 of coverage for your sports equipment that costs only an additional S$8. Additionally, if you want some perks besides just a discount, FWD sometimes has special promotions that include vouchers for things such as CapitaVouchers.

Best Budget Travel Insurance: Etiqa Tiq

Etiqa's Tiq travel insurance plans are a great option for people on a tight budget who are willing to sacrifice some, but not all, benefits in exchange for affordability. Before discounts, Etiqa's pricing is not necessarily competitive—in fact, its top tier Business Plan actually costs more than the industry average. However, Etiqa's is currently running a promotion of up to 60% off single trip plans which create plans that are some of the cheapest on the market.

In terms of coverage, you'll receive standard trip cancellation, delay, misconnection and curtailment coverage in addition to flight overbooking, personal belongings and bankruptcy of a travel agent. Though trip inconvenience and personal accident coverage is below average until you get to its Business Plan option, Etiqa's above average medical, hospital allowance, hospital visitation and emergency evacuation coverage may appeal to consumers who are looking for a medically-inclined budget plan.

Etiqa also has special travel insurance plans for those with pre-existing conditions, including diabetes, stroke, asthma, sleep apnea, cancer, epilepsy and more. Although the premiums are slightly more expensive, it provides an equal amount of coverage as it's non pre-existing condiiton plans. This means that those with pre-exisitng are still able to get good comprehensive coverage for their travels.

However, Etiqa's generous promotions 45% off (with an additional 10% off every Friday) and 35% off for Annual Trip plans create plans that are some of the cheapest on the market (around 35% below average).

Best Global Travel Insurance with Misc. Perks: HL Assurance

If you are looking to travel outside of the ASEAN region, HL Assurance's travel insurance plans are great for the budget global traveller. The 40% off Single Trip plan and 50% off Annual Trip plan promotion makes the HLAS Enhanced Plan's premiums 42% below average for global trips. However, while coverage isn't the highest compared to its more expensive peers, it does provide robust trip inconvenience and medical coverage compared to plans in a similar price point. For example, there is coverage for lost items, trip curtailment, postponement, cancellation and delays, as well as rental car excess (the excess you owe if you get into a car accident abroad), medical expenses and hospital cash benefit both abroad and back in Singapore. HL Assurance's travel insurance also boasts extensive COVID-19 coverage where you can be reimbursed up to S$1,500 if you have to be quarantined overseas. You are also able to make changes to your coverage should your holiday need to be cancelled due to you or a family member contracting COVID-19.

Another perk that customers might find useful is that HL Assurance gives customers a no claims discount. If you do not make any claims from your travel insurance, you are eligible to get 10% off your next travel insurance purchase with them, on top of any promotions running at the time.

Best Trip Inconvenience Coverage: Allianz Travel

For those who are looking for a combination of affordability and value with a focus on trip and baggage coverage, Allianz Travel can be a great match.

What makes these plans stand out is that they exhibit very high value with their generous trip inconvenience coverage. In fact, these plans consistently have the highest trip inconvenience coverage trip cancellation, baggage loss/delay and trip delay coverage) among their peers. If you tend to travel with valuable belongings or you are concerned with sudden changes to your trip itinerary, Allianz Travel plans can provide maximum peace of mind in that area. However, it does lag behind peers in terms of personal accident coverage.

High Value Travel Insurance for Families: MSIG

If you tend to go on vacation with your family often, MSIG's travel insurance plans can offer you some of the highest levels of coverage available. MSIG is running a Chinese New Year promotion of 45% off for Single Trip plans and 25% off for Annual Plans until 5 Feb 2023. Though it's not the most competitively priced insurer, MSIG offers many family-friendly benefits such as cover for adventurous activities, haze-related events, unused entertainment tickets (to theme parks, performances, concerts and sporting events) and even your domestic worker's belongings. These benefits are in addition to the above market average standard trip inconvenience and medical benefits, so you can be sure that your family will be receiving quite extensive coverage for maximum peace of mind.

If you tend to go on vacation with your family often, MSIG's travel insurance plans can offer you some of the highest levels of coverage available. The current promotion of 50% off for Single Trip plans and 20% off for Annual Plans create premiums that are around 15-30% below average for single trip plans and 10-15% below average for annual plans.
