There are plenty of Paris travel guides in existence: France, after all, is the most-visited country in the world, and its capital city is the main reason why: with world-class museums, wide open boulevards, Belle Epoque architecture, and distinct cuisine, it’s known not just as the cultural capital of Europe, but perhaps the world.

Yet it’s not just the reality of Paris that draws you in—it’s the fantasy. The City of Light, after all, has been romanticized for most of us since birth, in books by Victor Hugo and Ernest Hemingway, movies like An American in Paris and Moulin Rouge , and through photographers like Brassaï and Henri Cartier Bresson.

And while the majority of travelers know the iconic tourist spots of Paris—the Eiffel Tower! The Louvre! Notre Dame!—the spots that encompass the soul of the city that so many of us seek are harder to find. With that in mind, Vogue asked its editors where they stay eat, shop, and visit across the arrondissements.

Some answers are for the classicists—you can’t go wrong enjoying an evening of soufflé and a night at the ballet. Others are for those seeking alternative activities, from five Euro dumplings to vintage shops that will “make you look Emmanuelle Seigner straight out of Frantic ,” as one fashion writer puts it.

Below, the Vogue editors’ guide to Paris.

Where to Stay

“The feel is 1930s meets 1970s, cool elegance with a bit of grooviness,” Vogue wrote of the new Cheval Blanc Paris, which opened this September. The five-star hotel, which is owned by LVMH, boasts four restaurants, a Dior spa, and grand suites with stunning views of the Seine. —Elise Taylor, living writer

Hotel Duc De Saint Simon is the perfect, petit hotel with all the elegant chintz you want tucked in a perfect little courtyard in the 6eme. —Chloe Malle, contributing editor

The Bulgari feels more like a discreet modernist apartment building than its enormous neighbors, and would be preferable for anyone who prefers their room service menu Italian rather than French. The hotel gym (with pool and spa) is one of the best in city. —Mark Guiducci, Creative Editorial Director

By sheer luck and her connections, my friend got us a stay at this ultra-luxurious hotel. You feel like a celebrity as soon as you walk through its doors. The service was impeccable, and the rooms evoke classic French luxury. Some of the rooms have balconies looking onto the Eiffel Tower. What more could you ask for? —Christian Allaire, fashion and style writer

With spacious, Parisian apartment-style suites and elegant marble bathrooms, Hôtel Elysia is built for a comfortable night's sleep. Rooms on the top floor are so incredibly quiet, you'll forget you're a stone's throw away from the Champs-Élysées. —Jasmine Contomichalos, Senior Experiences Editor

On the middle of Avenue Kléber in the 16th arrondissement is the romantic and five-star Hotel Raphael. The interiors are adorned in a mixture of Louis XVI and Belle Epoque decor, creating an all-encompassing aura of grandeur that can only exist in Paris. —Elise Taylor

The former Louvre Post Office now houses Madame Rêve, a hotel that opened in fall 2021. Its 82 rooms offer stunning views over the city, and from the roof (where sunrise yoga sessions take place), you can see the Eiffel Tower. The interior design scheme—a soothing combination of goldenrod yellow, burgundy, and wood—extends into the downstairs restaurant and cocktail bar, where the feeling is cozy even with the chandeliers and high ceilings. The hotel is ideally located near the Louvre and an easy walk into the Marais. For breakfast, pick up pastries a couple of blocks away at Stohrer, a patisserie that’s been around since 1730. —Ella Riley Adams, contributor

Martin Brudnizki designed this fashionably maximalist hotel in Le Marais, where each room comes with a tapestry-covered bed and closets are lined with lobster and paisley print wallpaper. (The indoor pool, with its painted ceiling, is among the most beautiful I’ve seen.) Make sure to book a dinner at Boulabe, which is helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Assaf Granit. —Elise Taylor

In Pigalle is the new Soho House, set over five floors in a 19th-century apartment building that once was home to artist Jean Cocteau. While so much of Paris celebrates its grandiose architectural history, the Soho House takes a different approach, basing its design off of the playful work of Jean Royere and Santo Sospir, Cocteau's colorful villa in Cap de Ferrat. —Elise Taylor

It is pretty easy to fall in love with Château Voltaire , the newish and gorgeously appointed hotel on Paris’s Rue St. Roch, and within glass-shattering distance of a soprano’s aria at the Opera Garnier. —Mark Holgate, fashion features director

The Ritz Paris is one of the most famous hotels in the world—if not the most famous. And with good reason: stepping inside is like stepping inside another, grander era, with its Louis XV furnishings, rare books, canopied beds, and gilded chandeliers. Afternoon tea at Salon Proust is a must, as is a drink at the famed Bar Hemingway. —Elise Taylor

19 Avenue Kléber in the 16th has lived many lives: First, it once belonged to Queen Isabella II of Spain, who resided there after her exile. Then, it became Hotel Majestic, where George Gershwin wrote An American in Paris, before becoming the Ministry of Defense. Its latest journey? Housing the Peninsula Paris, which honors its history-rich atmosphere while embracing modern touches. When I stayed there this summer, I was in awe of the efficient amenities and services—an in-room iPad allows you to submit an array of requests that will be executed within minutes—as well as the romantic lodgings: Every morning, I could open my window to gaze upon a Beau Arts balcony. It’s perfect for the traveler in need of all the modern bells and whistles, but who still wants to indulge in the old-school Paris fantasy. —Elise Taylor

Situated on a quiet corner in the 2nd arrondissement, Hotel du Sentier feels like your home away from home. The understated yet utterly chic interiors make every room feel bright and airy. Of course, the sweeping views of the city’s skyline don't hurt either. On the first floor, a bistro serves traditional French fare from dawn to dusk—meaning that sourcing an oat milk latte or a bottle of Sancerre couldn't be more convenient. —Elisée Browchuk, experiences, production, and marketing manager

The St. James Hotel in the 16th was absolute heaven on earth on a recent visit, which I wrote about here —a perfect calm counterpoint to the rest of the bustling and busy city. And its Michelin-starred restaurant, Bellefuille, shouldn't be missed (whether you're staying here or somewhere else in Paris). —Corey Seymour, senior editor

Where to Eat

Image may contain Human Person Restaurant Cafe Neighborhood Urban Building and Home Decor

You can't go to Paris and not eat soufflé. Le Soufflé is an old-world kind of place tucked away on the Rue du Mont Thabor, which is a great street for restaurants. I like to go at lunch, when they have a special of starter salad, savory soufflé, and dessert soufflé. Decadent and delicious! —Nicole Phelps, global director of Vogue Runway

I had the perfect Parisian lunch with one of my best friends at Le Petit Lutetia, a brasserie by Jean-Louis Costes. Our definition of perfect, by the way? A place that serves a healthy pour of red wine and excellent steak frites, among a fashionable crowd that provides excellent people-watching. Elise Taylor

A restaurant on the Left Bank quay of the same name, Le Voltaire has kept high standards since it was converted from a former stables in the 19th century. Many of the tables are divided by carved wooden panels which recall its earlier equine function, and make it ideal for discreet conversation. -Mark Guiducci

Le Recamier is your must stop for soufflés and only soufflés! They don’t take reservations so it’s best to go for a latish lunch around 1:30 p.m. Go for a walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg and then have lunch at Recamier and then wander through Le Bon Marché, especially their incredible food hall La Grande Epicerie. —Chloe Malle

LVMH scion Antoine Arnault is a minority investor in Lapérouse, which should tell you all you need to know about the crowd at the Left Bank restaurant that takes up multiple gilded floors in an 18th-century mansion. Stepping inside feels like stepping back in time: the interiors are Belle Époque influenced, and dishes are served on Bernardaud china. Do a 10:30 p.m. reservation if you want to dine, as the place quickly descends into a party. —Elise Taylor

Girafe is one of Paris’s most iconic restaurants. The view of the Eiffel Tower is so close, it feels like you can almost touch it. Inside, minimalist decor meets traditional Paris style, creating an effortlessly cool modern ambiance. From the elevated menu to the elegant design, this restaurant should be top of your list. —Elisée Browchuk

What is a vegan to do in the land of excellent dairy? The original Marais juice bar now has outposts all over the city, and is a staple for any health nut visiting Paris. -Mark Guiducci

Nestled in the middle of the 2nd arrondissement, just off the Rue du Louvre, La Petite Bohème is the perfect stop between shows for a plate of manchego or a glass of Rioja. Don’t miss the patatas bravas, a specialty of the owner. -Chloe Malle

There’s simply no better place in town to get a macaron. —Elise Taylor

A trip to Paris isn't complete without an afternoon spent at Café de Flore. This picturesque establishment on the corner of Boulevard Saint Germain is perfect for spotting the latest street-style fashions and catching up with a friend over a light lunch. —Elisée Browchuk

The name of Clown Bar is quite literal: atop the bar are tiles of the circus performers, as well as a quintessential Art Nouveau-era painted ceiling. But rest assured the bistro, founded by chef Sota Atsumi, takes its culinary pursuits quite seriously. Order a natural wine and some tartare de boeuf. —Elise Taylor

Cafe Breizh is a sleek but unfussy creperie with excellent buckwheat crêpe complète. —Chloe Malle

Fromagerie Barthelemy and Marie-Anne Cantin are two spectacular cheese shops in the 7eme. There is heated debate as to which one is better but I feel it’s totally acceptable to patronize both. —Chloe Malle

My cheeseburger in paradise. Tucked around the corner from the rue Paul Bert is the best meal I’ve ever had in Paris– err maybe anywhere, ever. I last visited Chardenoux with an eclectic group of fashion writers in June and we shared every dish minus the cheeseburger, which I couldn't spare a bite of. Start with the Green Sky cocktail (when in Paris, drink chartreuse, I suppose), and order the seafood starters—think carpaccio, crispy salmon sushi, and tacos. Don't skip dessert—the mille-feuille is to die for. --Olive Leatherwood, communications manager

I had never been to Paris before until this year but I randomly ended up staying next to the most amazing and low-key locally famed restaurant called Chez Prune! I love it there. They had this insane slab of beef that made me want to never give up meat. —Liana Satenstein, contributing editor

Le Bon Georges is a classic, quaint Parisian bistro in Pigalle. I'd tell you what to order—but the menu changes seasonally (everything is updated daily on a chalkboard) and they recommend you choose your meal around the wine. Who could argue with that? —Elise Taylor

It’s come to my attention that in the last year or so, this place has blown up on TikTok thanks to the moody speakeasy in the back. I always hit Candelaria for the tacos in the front– no queue for me! The space has one shared table and mostly bar seating, a busy frozen margarita machine, and a fun “just passing through The Marais” atmosphere. -Olive Leatherwood

My greatest weakness is Chinese food, so if I need a break from meat-heavy Gallic cuisine, I always head east to one of the amazing Sichuanese or Cantonese restaurants that line the Rue de Belleville outside the metro station. And for a quick pitstop, there’s nowhere better than Raviolis Nord-Est, just around the corner from Les Halles, where you can get a plate of 10 fresh dumplings for five euros, steamed or grilled to your liking. Another place I love is Les Enfants du Marché, situated in the bustling, must-visit Enfants Rouges covered market and offering elevated, Japanese-inflected riffs on classic French dishes. After that, all you need is some fresh cherries from one of the neighboring stalls for dessert, and you’re good to go. —Liam Hess, contributing editor

The perfect location for a true Parisian croque madame and cappuccino in a bowl! The absolute cafe to feel like a local. —Cassandra Pintro, associate production manager

This bespoke cocktail bar crafts unique drinks for every guest. Yes, even the ones that are always hard to please. Bisou mixologists create one-of-a-kind libations based on individual, in-the-moment cravings using the freshest ingredients. Á votre santé! —Elisee Browchuk

In the warmer months, I love eating at the outdoor patio of Loulou. Indulge in some truffle pizza while gazing upon Jardin des Tuileries and the Eiffel Tower, which, every hour, will give you a sparkling display of lights. —Elise Taylor

If you are missing the American brunch menu but still want to preserve the perfect je ne sais quoi lifestyle, Holybelly is the place for you. The hipster cafe just outside of the city center is well worth a trip, and the interior design deserves an honorable mention too. —Cassandra Pintro

Ferdi is not your typical burger spot and that’s why I love it. For one, they only take reservations via text message. The restaurant space itself is so small that you’ll walk right by it if you’re not paying attention, and once inside you’ll find the walls around you filled with anything from stuffed animals to vintage toy cars. Still, there’s a reason why Kim Kardashians and other celebs claim it’s the best burger in Paris. Personally, it’s the special sauce they use that puts it in my number one spot. While famous for its burgers and fries, the churros are a must for dessert. —Taylor Lashley, social media manager

For an adventurous night out, go out for dinner and a cabaret show at Crazy Horse. You’ll live out your Moulin Rouge fantasies and more. —Elise Taylor

It’s depressing to be gluten-free in Paris. It felt like all the delicious croissants and people enjoying them were taunting me with their flaky, buttery-fingered joy—until I made a trip to the 6th’s Noglu bakery. They make the impossible happen: chocolate eclairs, Paris-Brest, and different types of croissants, all made in a 100 percent gluten-free facility so it's safe to overindulge in one of everything on the menu. -Margaux Anbouba, senior beauty editor

On a trip to Paris this summer, Vogue Runway’s local Parisian critic Amy Verner took me to Cafe Kitsuné at the Tuileries Gardens. I’ll admit that I’ve never felt tempted to stop by the cafe which also has a location in the West Village in New York—and has several storefronts in Paris as well—but Tuileries Gardens outpost was so quiet and relaxing. It felt very French to sit amongst the locals on one of those tables overlooking the garden. -Irene Kim, production and editorial coordinator, Vogue Runway

I’m obsessed with La Mutinerie, the Parisian queer-run feminist bar that’s committed to keeping prices low and door entry free (and making all bar-related decisions as a nonhierarchical collective; now that's what I call egalite! ) -Emma Specter, culture writer

Where to Shop

For delightfully funky vintage shopping, head to Rélique near République. When I visited last fall (upon recommendation from my chic French friend), the window display featured a giant pink tentacle and a bouquet of sunflowers. Inside, there were two floors of argyle sweater vests, wide-legged pants, and fabulous button-downs. Plus, with shag rugs and a retro bubble chair, there are photo ops aplenty. I left with an amazing ladybug-print handkerchief and a polka-dot scarf. —Ella Riley-Adams

Located inside Dior’s recently opened flagship store on Montaigne Avenue, Maison Dior is a carefully curated extension of the heritage brand. A palette of red, black, and white hues inspired by the brand's archive set the tone in the dining room. Of course, each place setting is adorned with Maison Dior tableware along with mixed and matched houndstooth chairs. For a taste of Dior, this hits the spot. —Elisée Browchuk

Lovers of history, prettiness, and paper should make the trek to Antoinette de Poisson. The shop—and the hidden courtyard it’s located in—is an oasis where it seems like time stands still. The company preserves the art of making hand-printed domino papers, featuring floral and geometric patterns. Popular in the 18th century, these sheets were used to cover books and small boxes. Antoinette de Poisson offers the same, plus, perfume, wallpapers, and objects for the home and table—all of which come wrapped in an aura of historical romance. —Laird Borrelli-Persson, archive editor

For obvious reasons, Paris is a fashion lover’s paradise, but one of my favorite places to have a poke around is the historic Sennelier art supply store, a mere hop, skip, and a jump across the bridge from the Tuileries gardens. I may not be blessed with artistic talent, but after a trip to the Musée d’Orsay, I can pick up some handmade papers and their vibrant high-pigment oil pastels and briefly fancy myself as the next Degas. —Liam Hess

It's almost 200 years old, but your first trip to Deyrolle in the Seventh Arrondissement always feels like a great discovery: Part taxidermy shop, part cabinet of curiosities, part museum, part gift-and-garden shop, it's served as inspiration and fantastical wonderland for everyone from Breton, Dali, Damien Hirst, Sophie Calle, Wes Anderson, and a million others. Bring the kids. —Corey Seymour, senior editor

The most heavenly vintage jewelry shop with truly exquisite pieces from the big houses to the unsigned. It’s not for the faint of heart (or wallet) but even a window gaze is worth the time. —Daisy Shaw-Ellis

Michele Aragon is Aladdin's cave of eclectic and elegant homewares in the 6th, a must-stop for anyone who loves a kilim-covered armchair. Just down the street from Michele Aragon is Simrane, France’s original Indian block print exporter with every style of paisley tablecloth your tablescape could desire. —Chloe Malle

I love Pascale’s jewelry, and where better to buy the Parisian’s pieces than her own boutique on Rue Mont Thabor. Almost all of her jewelry whisks me away on vacation—the shells, the delicate gold pieces, the color. —Daisy Shaw-Ellis

I learned about this Black-owned beauty store from my good friend Julee Wilson Warhem—she goes here when in town to discover new and exciting brands that haven’t quite made it to the US, but founder Anne-Marie Mendy’s story is even more rousing. She founded the store in 2009 to provide a much-needed space for Paris’s women of color to shop for hair, skin, and makeup products. Their specialty is catering to the curly and coily community and the staff is on-hand for product help and advice. —Margaux Anbouba

As an avowed believer in the gospel of Driesus Christ, I’ll always make a stop at the Belgian designer’s flagship Paris store—even if I’m not flush enough to actually buy anything. Sitting in a prime position on the Left Bank just over from the Pont des Arts, and with the best-stocked selection of his print-clashing pieces you’ll find anywhere in the world, entering the space feels like stepping into van Noten’s brilliant mind. —Liam Hess

The best shopping place is called Nuovo. It is a tiny vintage shop full of hot girl clothes. Basically, the owner doesn’t curate by labels but by taste. The prices are great, too. I got the most amazing leather jacket from there that made me look like Emmanuelle Seigner straight out of Frantic. —Liana Satenstein

French girl fashion lovers look no further than Jeanne Damas’s flagship store, Rouje. I always manage to find one (or three!) floral dresses that quickly become wardrobe staples. —Eliseé Browchuk

If you're looking to do some home shopping in Paris and want an addition to the antique markets, I’d recommend Merci, an eclectic home store in the Marais district. I’ve known editors to build out their crockery collections over seasons of shows, and their glassware and linens are great, too. —Daisy Shaw-Ellis

Paris has an abundance of world-class department stores, including Le Bon Marche, La Samaritaine, and Printemps. I’d advise to go to all of them . But Galeries Lafayette will always hold a special place in my heart for its romantic steel-frame art nouveau glass dome by master Jacques Gruber, making it an architectural monument in its own right. —Elise Taylor

You're going to want to block out at least an hour for combing through this color-coded shop. Gorgeous Union-Made frocks rub shoulders with Chanel blazers (is there anything more chic than Chanel previously loved by French women?), and the collection of gloves in all shades and materials will convince you that evening gloves could probably be worn in the day after all. —Margaux Anbouba

The Vogue Editors Guide to Paris

The recently opened Pinault Collection is a must-visit upon every trip to Paris. Housed in the old bourse de commerce, a commodities trading facility, the grand building is the stately and impressive home to the unique collection of both established and emerging artists. The grand rotunda currently exhibiting an Urs Fischer work took my breath away. Plus, the Pinault is just a few steps from rue Saint Honoré, should you wish to do a bit of shopping post-visit. —Alexandra Michler, director of fashion initiatives

One of the great joys of Paris is its wealth of niche museums, and there’s nowhere greater—or more atmospheric—in that regard than the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, the museum of hunting and nature that is tucked away in a spectacularly beautiful hôtel particulier in the heart of Le Marais. The deliciously macabre displays of taxidermy are a highlight, but the museum also manages to avoid feeling too fusty by bringing in contemporary artists to produce works in conversation with its collections, from Sterling Ruby to Jeff Koons. No matter how many times you go, there’s always something there to surprise you. —Liam Hess

The Musee d’Orsay. Always the Musee d’Orsay. —Elise Taylor

Of course, there are many sublime restaurants to visit in Paris, but I always save at least one meal for the bounty I find at one of the open-air markets. Parisians know how to source the best of everything—from vegetables to cheese to chocolates—and it’s a joy to feel like a local and gather goods for a picnic in the park or a home-cooked meal at your Airbnb. I recommend Marché Raspail in the 6th! —Mai Morsch

Walking around Paris is by far my favorite activity, other than eating of course. Strolling around different neighborhoods and looking into shops or stopping into museums is just the best. My favorite walk is around the Marais with a stop to refuel midday at Mariage Freres for tea. It's the most charming spot and they have all the greatest teas (and treats!) in the world. —Willow Lindley, accessories director

I love walking (and lounging) around Canal Saint-Martin, especially when the sun is out. Get a cappuccino at Ten Belles, and when hunger strikes stop by Du Pain et des Idées for one of their amazing escargot pastries. You’ll inevitably stumble upon other cute shops and restaurants as you go. —Ella Riley-Adams

Perched atop the Parisienne skyline is the magical Le Bristol Spa. It’s a serious treat and one I always look forward to indulging in at the end of couture week—especially for their all-natural Tata Harper skincare treatments. The famous rooftop pool resembles the interior of a yacht with teak decking and surrounding windows that offer a breathtaking 360 view of Sacré Coeur and the Eiffel Tower. The perfect way to fit in any sightseeing that you didn't manage on foot! —Laura Paterson, experiences director

There’s no shortage of museums in Paris, but after hitting the nearby Louvre, a stop at the The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is also worthwhile. With an impressive array of antique to modern furniture (there are Louis XVI chairs and Charlotte Perriand shelves) and often marquee fashion exhibit. This upcoming, it's an examination of fashion in sports, in honor of the 2024 Olympics.—Elise Taylor

Surround yourself with beauty and attend a ballet performance at the Palais Garnier, the Parisian landmark that’s iconic and, well, very much deserves to be for its opulent, Napoleonic style. —Elise Taylor

This red-velvet and soft pink hair salon feels straight out of a Slim Aarons still. Washes happen in a Birth of Venus-like half shell, which includes an incredible scalp massage, and try a French girl’s balayage or blowout to see what all the low-maintenance, high-glamour fuss is about. —Margaux Anbouba

A hub for hedonists, a wellspring of inspiration for artists, and a haven for history buffs: Paris is a fantasy destination for millions of travelers each year. The storied bakeries, iconic museums, and corner cafés feel anchored in another time, but the zeitgeist of the city leans forward into a dynamic, multicultural food scene dominated by young French and foreign talents. It is precisely this juxtaposition of old and new that makes Paris the perpetually perfect place to visit. So go exploring, get lost, eat until your belly hurts—and then do it all over again. The City of Light shines on.

When’s the best time to go to Paris?

You’re likely to be disappointed if you arrive expecting the image of springtime in Paris that you see in Hollywood films. In the last several years, the months between April and June have reported below-average temperatures and record-high precipitation—a far cry from the endless days of sunshine in the movies. The weather is wholly unreliable, which foils many travelers’ ambitions for a dry early-season trip. Late summer and early fall typically yield the warmest sojourns (though the summers in general appear to be getting warmer), plus this is when Paris is most culturally active, unveiling new exhibits and welcoming the return of the some of the most anticipated festivals. December and January provide a more festive experience, with Christmas markets lining the well-heeled boulevards and twinkling lights illuminating the city’s boutiques. All weather aside, there is hardly a bad time to visit Paris, rain or shine.

How to get around Paris

From either of the city’s two airports, the RER B , a regional rail line, is the fastest way to reach the city center. Taxis are convenient, but they can be costly.

Getting around: There are few cities as walkable as Paris. For further distances, le métro is the quickest and most reliable means of getting to and from your destinations (sometimes faster than a taxi). Google Maps is a reliable way of figuring out which train to catch. Ubers operate here.

Paris also has excellent bike infrastructure. On nice days, grab a bike share with Vélib, the city’s successful bike-share program, or Lime.

Can’t miss things to do in Paris

– Whether at the peak of summer or in the moodiness of a winter’s night, nothing elicits a chorus of oohs and ahs like a leisurely after-dinner stroll across the city’s iconic bridges and along the banks of the Seine River. Amble across the Pont des Arts toward the Institut de France and continue along the docks of the river, watching the Bâteaux Mouches glide by and illuminate the river with their lights. Keep wandering until you reach a spot to pause for an unobstructed view of a twinkling Eiffel Tower (every hour, on the hour, after sundown). It’s free and absolutely stunning at all times of year.

– If time allows, you really shouldn’t miss visiting the Louvre , the Musée d’Orsay , and Sacré-Cœur , or taking a stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens .

– Following the devastating fire in April 2019, Notre-Dame Cathedral remains closed for restoration work . Officials have said the forecourt in front of the church could open as early as March 2020, but for now, you’ll only be able to snap a picture from afar.

Food and drink to try in Paris

– It is entirely possible to spend days roaming the marbled halls of the Louvre or walking from one fabled cobblestone street to another, but Paris is, above all, a city for insatiable lovers of wine and food. Mix the classic dining visionaries with the rising influence of young culinary talents, and you’ve got a rapidly evolving, deliriously delicious food-and-drink scene.

– The city’s hottest restaurants tend to have booking systems that are arcane at best and nonexistent at worst, so plan in advance to ensure that you snag a coveted table. Or just pull up a chair at a neighborhood café and watch the world go by.

– When it comes to gratuities : Don’t tip for self-service at counters or buffets; round up to the nearest euro or add a euro on top of the bill when ordering drinks; leave just a few euro for informal fare; and tip around 15 percent at formal restaurants (as long as a service fee is not already included).

Culture in Paris

– Every international city has its iconic landmarks and cultural institutions. In Paris, most travelers would cite the Louvre as the must-visit art stop, but curious visitors should look beyond the usual suspects and explore places like the Musée de la Vie Romantique , the Jewish Art and History Museum , the Cinémathèque Française , and the Fondation Cartier .

– Dive a little deeper into a fascinating chapter of 20th-century Parisian history with a historian-led Context walking tour that focuses on the city’s occupation by Nazi Germany, a time marked by unrest, bravery, and heroism.

– Given the Parisians’ well-documented penchant for celebrating art, culture, and design in all its forms, you can count on a packed schedule of festivals all year long. Whether for a neighborhood street parade or larger-scale happenings like Paris Plage and Nuit Blanche , it’s worth planning your vacation around the city’s celebratory timetable.

Local travel tips for Paris

– Always greet shop owners and restaurant staff with “bonjour” when entering and before asking a question or making a request.

– Avoid restaurants that have English translations printed on the menu or that display multiple flags. Similarly, avoid restaurants with multi-page menus, as the authenticity of the meal may be questionable.

– When metro train cars are crowded, give up your folding seat and stand.

– A baguette is always better with cheese —the older the cheese, the better.

– Do not overlook the city’s farmers’ markets as potential lunch spots.

– Macaron loyalties teeter between Ladurée and Pierre Hermé , so try both and decide for yourself.

– The Champs-Élysées has few redeeming qualities and is considered the Times Square of Paris by locals. Skip it and opt for a bird’s-eye view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe .

Practical Information

– U.S. visitors to France do not need a visa for stays of less than 90 days, however you’ll need a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond your length of stay.

– France uses type E and C plugs (as well as F, if it has an extra pin), so visitors from the U.S. will need an adaptor. Since the standard electrical voltage in France is 230 V, you’ll also need a voltage converter (U.S. standard voltage is 110) to ensure you don’t fry your appliances.

– France’s official currency is the euro; check conversion rates here , but keep in mind that the rates you’ll pay to convert dollars to euros will be slightly more. And consider using a credit card that doesn’t charge a fee for international transactions.

– The official language is French, bien sûr , though you’re likely to hear several languages spoken, as Paris is an international city. Parisians appreciate it when you make an effort to speak a little French, so it’s definitely worthwhile—and highly recommended—to learn at least the basics before you arrive.

T&C Travel Guide: Paris in the Summer

When the sun sets well past 9 p.m., that's extra mileage to see and explore the City of Light.

aerial view of paris streets and eiffel tower at sunset, france

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Though Paris is infamously quiet—and devoid of actual French people—during the month of August, there is truly no better time of year to visit the city than during the summer. And with the sun setting well past 9 p.m., the day is stretched to maximize darting around town, tasting all the most delectable food the city has to offer, seeing the finest of the arts and culture offerings, and of course, taking in the sights as only a flâneur could. With so much to do, it's a wonder anyone ever sleeps at all on a trip to Paris—though, when the time calls for it, we have a list of fabulous places for you to stay too. The spiral of arrondissements offers something for everyone—you just need to know where to go. From the must-visit restaurants, exhibits, shops, and more, to the finest accommodations imaginable, here's the T&C Travel Guide to Paris in the Summer.

Where to Stay

Tucked away on the Rue de Faubourg Saint-Honoré is the elegant and storied Le Bristol, with its 190 renovated rooms and suites. It's been a favorite of the fashion set for many decades—and for good reason. Not only does the hotel have a spectacularly manicured interior garden, a spa, and three restaurants (Epicure, 114 Faubourg, and Cafe Antonia), but it is also home to Le Bar Bristol—the perfect cozy-yet-glamorous venue to start, or end, a night out in Paris. And the indoor pool modeled after a sail boat on the Riviera? It's a sight to behold. But the most beyond touch: Le Bristol has its own épicerie, and its own flour mill and chocolaterie for the ingredients they use to create their own pastries and delectable chocolate treats in house. It's luxury from top to bottom.

Hotel Madame Reve

Located in the Louvre Post Office nestled in the bustling and oh-so historic first arrondissement, the Hotel Madame Reve offers an escape from the quotidian. Not only do the hotel suites and rooms boast modern finishings and excellent views to match (with mail and postage references) —it's quite literally a hotel in a post office, but the moment you step into the hotel, you really feel as though you're passing through the eras. On the first floor, classic French savoir-faire, but by the time you reach the third floor, where the restaurant La Plume is situated, or head up to Roof (the outdoor lounge at the top floor), you're in a sleek and shi-shi hotspot meant to spend the evening in only a way a bon vivant can.

The Ritz Paris

The Ritz Paris's reputation precedes itself. After-all, everyone from kings and queens to cultural figures such as Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel have stayed here . The scene can only described as lavish with an elegant decor of rich brocades and pastel hues. This is a must-visit for a hotel lover, and at risk of stating the obvious, even with many restaurants to choose from on site (some with Michelin stars), one should always make time to visit the perennially packed Bar Hemingway, as well. It would be wrong not to.

Hotel Brach

The sixteenth can carry a reputation for an atmosphere that is staid and stuffy—to which we say, to each their own. However, if in search of something a little more off-the-beaten path, you stumble upon the Hotel Brach, it is the warm and eclectic answer to the aforementioned reputation of the neighborhood it is situated. Think: a meeting of 1930s architecture, modernism, Bauhaus, Dada, and a touch of Surrealism. The effect: warm and eclectic accommodations that have made this hotel a go-to recommendation from local Parisians. Need we say more? If we must, we would be remiss to skip mentioning the rooftop garden which not only supplies berries, vegetables, and herbs to the hotel's restaurants, but also houses the chicken coop, with three hens to supply the hotel with eggs. Also on site, a Norwegian bath available to guests, and a rave-worthy sports club (which channels a 1930s boxing club) that offers memberships.

Chateau Voltaire

The Chateau Voltaire is a bit of a best kept secret—the kind backed up by unpretentious hospitality that truly earns its reputation as a stealth luxury stay. Guests continually remark that in spite of the fact that the hotel is located in the very busy second arrondissement, they find their stays to be remarkably quiet. Rooms are spacious and sleek with refined finishings, and replete with sumptuous details that only serve to underscore that the Chateau Voltaire (with its three buildings and 32 rooms) is a sultry sanctuary that deserves its reputation as a hidden gem.

What to Eat

If you can get a reservation at Septime—emphasis on the 'if'— by all means move mountains to make it work for your itinerary. Coveted reservations open up three weeks to the day in advance, and if dinner isn't possible, making a trip for lunch is highly suggested. And yes, lunch should come with the wine pairing. You are in France! The farm-fresh and local food is innovative and splashy, but the vibe is unpretentious. It's a meal to write home about.

L'Ami Jean is an institution among food-loving travelers and locals who know what they're talking about. The bistro first opened almost 100 years ago as a Basque pub and has evolved into a mainstay of classic French dining. It's not gimmicky, and absolutely one of those joints that you always make a point to stop by when you're in town.

In old French 'vantre' referred to the belly, all of which to say... come to Vantre hungry. With creative pairings of wine and inventive renditions of French classics that will leave you wanting to lick your plate, you'll inevitably become a return customer.

114 Faubourg

There's only one word to describe 114 Faubourg: chic. Well, actually two, the other word is delicious. The setting is glittering and modern, with floral prints on the walls and bright gold columns—and the food? It's decadent and savory and the service is in a class of its own. It will be one of the best meals of your trip, if not the best. And, yes, even if you are going for lunch, the wine pairing is highly suggested.

Chez Denise

An old school French brasserie in the best sense of the expression. Chez Denise is in the middle of the bustling Les Halles neighborhood—but rest assured it is just as buzzing once you walk into the premises. Wine flows by the carafe, and truthfully, if you're not getting a steak, then you are missing out. This is not one of those places where you have a light meal, which is intended entirely as a compliment.

The panoramic views are spectacular, but the Japanese-stroke-French-fare at the oh-so-sexy Plume makes for a great complement. Dress to impress, as you'll notice everyone there is too. It's not typically Parisian, but it's great for a romantic night out.

la plume restaurant in paris interior view

There are rooftop lounges and then there is ROOF at Hotel Madame Reve. Located on... you guessed it, the roof, the new outdoor space is the perfect place to grab an aperitif (or a few) and nosh on appetizers while you watch the sunset. It has a gorgeous suspended garden and the crowd is young and fashionable. And the view? It's so good you just won't want to leave.

La Grand Epicerie

If you're not going to take my word for it... at least then heed the advice of Ina Garten, who also suggests travelers pop in to the breathtaking Grand Epicerie. It is, without an ounce of hyperbole, the best specialty food store in the world.

30 Avenue Montaigne

Earlier this year, Dior re-opened its breathtaking flagship in Paris complete with an archival gallery, cafe, haute couture and jewelry atelier, as well as a restaurant, a patisserie, three gardens, and a boutique. It is well worth a visit if you love fashion, but even if you don't, it's a great experience from top to bottom.

Huitrerie Regis

Yes, Huitrerie Regis is listed here as a thing to do. Because it is an experience. Grab your travel buddy—and some friends, even if you have to make them—and order muscadet with your oysters. It's a grand old time.

La Samaritane

The historic French Department store in the first arrondissement reopened last year, and even if you aren't going to shop, it's worth a visit because of the breathtaking renovation. Also , Le Cheval Blanc is a hop, skip, and a jump away.

City Pharma

If you know, you know. And now you do. Skincare junkies and beauty lovers have long held City Pharma as an essential Paris stop. Because in a world of exquisite French pharmacies, City Pharma is a beauty outlet where you can get the best of luxury French beauty for less. Do yourself a favor and buy some Bioderma in bulk, ok?

A view over over Paris's rooftops, as the sky is turning a soft pink and purple. The pointed Eiffel Tower is visible in the distance, rising into the sky.

There is a reason Paris remains among the most visited cities in the world. Its scenic, walkable neighborhoods have been shaped by centuries of cultural and political history, and any short visit will involve tough decisions. Monuments like Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower need no introduction. Instead, this guide presents a different side of the French capital: under-the-radar spots in the popular Montmartre hilltop neighborhood, smaller museums without crowds and a taste of Paris’s diverse performance scene. And it’s easier to get around: As the city gears up for the Summer 2024 Olympics, the first it is hosting in a century, the venerable subway (the métro) is undergoing a makeover, with extensions to several lines. Spot the layers of urban transformation underway — while staying alert to the millefeuille of art and architecture you’ll encounter everywhere.

This is like a countryside retreat within the city, making it among the top reasons to visit Paris.

What makes one of the best parks in Paris so unique is its accessibility. Just a short trip from the city center, it feels like entering a different world.

Here, you can leave behind the city's hustle and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of nature.

It's a chance to experience vibrant nature coexisting harmoniously with the bustling metropolis. This isn't merely one of the many gorgeous parks in Paris; it's a doorway to nature's wonders right at your doorstep.

The vibrant landscape of the Parisian shopping scene

In the vibrant landscape of the Parisian shopping scene, one place stands out as a true treasure trove: the Saint Ouen flea market. It is a captivating reason to visit Paris and explore its diverse cultural offerings.

Whenever I have a free weekend, exploring the flea market is at the top of my to-do list. It's one of the best places to shop in Paris, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and hidden gems.

This open-air market sprawls across several streets and is a mecca for antique aficionados and vintage enthusiasts like me. The thrill of uncovering a rare find in its maze-like alleys is simply unbeatable.

Paris: Where romance blossoms

Paris: Where romance blossoms

Known worldwide as the most romantic city, Paris lures travelers with the promise of enchanting moments and is a delightful reason to make it your next travel destination.

When it comes to romance, Paris reigns as the world's most enchanting city. As someone who has lived in the midst of its romantic aura, I can attest to the undeniable allure that makes Paris the ultimate destination for lovers.

Paris isn't merely a city; it's an embodiment of love itself. The Eiffel Tower, adorned with its sparkling lights, stands as a testament to the city's romantic legacy. There's no place in the world quite like it.

As I strolled along the Seine River banks, dined at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Jules Verne, and savored coffee at charming cafés like Les Deux Magots, I felt the city's romance seeping into every moment.

Paris is where you can fall in love all over again, and every street corner of the city whispers sweet promises of romance.

Love stories: Paris' timeless romances

The rich tapestry of Parisian love stories

The rich tapestry of Parisian love stories, woven into the very fabric of the city, serves as a compelling reason to visit and immerse oneself in the romantic narratives that have unfolded on its enchanting streets and beneath its iconic landmarks.

In the heart of Paris, beneath the Eiffel Tower's graceful arches, I've witnessed countless love stories bloom into timeless romances.

There's a reason why couples from around the world make a pilgrimage to Paris. The Eiffel Tower, with its breathtaking views and romantic ambiance, is an icon of love's enduring power. I've often found myself gazing at the Seine River, where the city's enchanting bridges serve as witnesses to countless declarations of love.

Paris is where you can savor the most exquisite French cuisine in Michelin-star restaurants like GrandCœur, creating memories that linger on the palate long after your visit.

Paris is where love stories are written in the starlit glow of the Eiffel Tower, and every visit adds a new chapter to this city's timeless romances.

French gastronomy: A symphony of flavors

French gastronomy: A symphony of flavors

When it comes to culinary artistry, Paris, as the unrivaled conductor of a symphony of flavors, stands as a delectable reason to visit the city.

I've always believed that tasting your way through Paris is a journey through the heart of French culture, and every bite tells a story.

Parisian cuisine is an art form, and every plate is a masterpiece.

Begin your day at the charming Café Saint-Régis on Rue Jean-du-Bellay for their delightful croissants and café au lait.

For lunch, venture to Le Comptoir du Relais on Carr de l'Odéon, a cozy spot where the menu showcases authentic French flavors in dishes like duck confit and escargot.

As the sun sets, make your way to the enchanting Montmartre district, where La Maison Rose on Rue de l'Abreuvoir offers a delightful dining experience with its quaint atmosphere and savory French onion soup.

Each bite is a testament to the culinary mastery that has made French food famous across the globe.

When you visit Paris, be prepared to embark on a delectable adventure that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving more. Paris isn't just a destination; it's a feast for the senses.

Michelin magic: Fine dining in Paris

Indulging in the finest culinary experiences

When it comes to indulging in the finest culinary experiences, Paris, as a treasure trove of Michelin-starred delights, is an enticing reason to visit the city. I absolutely love the thrill of exploring the city's haute cuisine scene, where each meal is a masterpiece in itself.

Paris is a city where gastronomic dreams come true, and it's no secret that Michelin stars shine brighter here than any other European city.

One of my personal favorites is Le Meurice Alain Ducasse on Rue de Rivoli, where you can savor innovative French cuisine in a stunning Belle Époque setting. For a truly unique experience, Guy Savoy on Rue de la Monnaie offers a breathtaking view of the Seine River along with its three Michelin stars. Take the chance to dine at L'Ambroisie on Île Saint-Louis, a three-Michelin-star gem where you'll be transported to a world of culinary excellence when you visit Paris.

Paris' Michelin-starred restaurants promise an unforgettable dining adventure.

Street eats: Paris' culinary treasures

As I wander through the charming streets of Paris, I can't help but seek out its lesser-known culinary delights – those hidden gems that add a touch of enchantment to the city's food scene, making it a compelling reason to visit.

From delectable street food to cozy local haunts, Paris has an array of flavors to satisfy every palate, and I'm excited to share some personal favorites.

Allow me to whisk you away on a culinary journey. Tucked away in the lively Latin Quarter, you'll find Au P'tit Grec, a tiny crêperie on Rue Mouffetard. Their savory and sweet crêpes are absolutely delightful, and it's one of my go-to spots for a quick, delicious meal.

If you're in the mood for traditional French comfort food, Le Lézard Café offers an authentic experience. Their duck confit and onion soup are sublime.

And for those seeking a taste of North African cuisine, a visit to Le 404 in the Marais district is a must. It's a charming Moroccan restaurant where the tagines and couscous dishes have never failed to impress me.

While these may not be Paris' best-kept secrets, they are certainly some of my personal culinary treasures. As you explore the city, I encourage you to seek out your own hidden gems and savor the unique flavors that Paris has to offer.

Nocturnal Paris: Illuminating the night

Nocturnal Paris: Illuminating the night

Paris clubs, with their vibrant nightlife and eclectic music scenes, offer an electrifying reason to visit the city and experience its after-hours excitement.

When the sun dips below the Seine and bathes Paris in a mesmerizing cascade of lights, I can't help but feel that the city truly comes alive after dark.

So, let me share some of my personal recommendations for experiencing the vibrant tapestry of Parisian nightlife.

When I'm in the mood for some smooth jazz, I always choose Le Caveau de la Huchette in the Latin Quarter. It's my favorite cozy underground jazz club, where you can't help but sway to the rhythms of live music.

If you're in the mood for something more upscale, I usually head to Le Bar du Plaza Athénée, which has an iconic Eiffel Tower view. I absolutely love their expertly crafted cocktails and the elegant ambiance.

For a night of dancing, consider checking out some of the local clubs like Nouveau Casino or Wanderlust, which offer a diverse range of music and a great atmosphere for dancing the night away.

Whether you're a seasoned night owl or just want to experience the city after dark, Paris offers a symphony of lights and sounds that leaves me enchanted, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way.

Moulin Rouge: Where glamour takes center stage

Moulin Rouge: Where glamour takes center stage

The iconic Moulin Rouge, with its dazzling cabaret shows and rich history, stands as a captivating reason to visit Paris and immerse yourself in its legendary entertainment culture.

So, let's talk about one of my absolute favorite spots for a night of glitz and glamour in Paris.

The world-famous Moulin Rouge is not just a cabaret; it's an experience that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The moment I stepped into the Moulin Rouge, I was transported to a world of red velvet, sparkling chandeliers, and an electric atmosphere. The cabaret's rich history and the allure of the Can-Can dance create an unparalleled ambiance.

The evening kicks off with a sumptuous dinner, and then the real magic happens as the show begins.

The stunning dancers, incredible costumes, and high-energy performances will leave you in awe. It's a night I'll never forget, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Paris.

Nightlife escapades: Paris after dark

Paris after dark!

One of the top reasons to visit Paris? Paris after dark!

From my own experiences, I've uncovered a treasure trove of nocturnal delights awaiting you in this lively city.

Start your evening with a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower from the romantic Trocadéro Gardens, beautifully illuminated against the night sky.

For art enthusiasts, exploring the Louvre Museum after hours is an absolute must. It's a surreal experience having these world-renowned masterpieces all to yourself.

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll down Rue de Rivoli, where charming cafes like Café La Colonnade beckon you to savor late-night treats. Paris comes alive at night, whether you prefer an intimate night in the city's restaurants or soaking in the beauty of illuminated landmarks.

Paris called, and the night is yours to explore!

There you have it, the best reasons to visit Paris through my eyes and experiences.

From the iconic Eiffel Tower and world-renowned museums to charming cafes tucked away on picturesque streets, the French capital offers a timeless appeal that continues to enchant travelers from around the world.

As you prepare to embark on your own Parisian adventure, let the city's rich history, artistic treasures, and captivating streets guide your way.

How many Disney parks are there around the world? We’re sharing your complete guide and everything you need to know about the Disney properties you can find around the globe.

We all know Magic Kingdom Park in Disney World or Disneyland Park at Disneyland Resort. But, did you know there are actually twelve different Disney Parks around the world?

We’re sharing your complete guide to Disney Parks around the world, covering both theme parks and resorts – and the non-park Disney properties you need to know.
