Ampana Travel Guide

Situated in central Sulawesi in central Indonesia , Ampana is a bit of a ramshackle port town with not much to do other than catch the ferry to the Togean Islands .

Ampana does, however, have some chilled seafront guest houses and horse drawn carts ( dokars ) for transport. Other than catching the ferry to the Togeans, the beaches in Ampana are the main draw. All up and down the coast are stunning white sandy beaches, many of which are empty and relaxed.

There is some good accommodation here and prices are a lot cheaper than anywhere in Java and Nusa Tenggara . The real attraction are the nearby Togean Islands, specifically Kadidiri and Melange. You can get to the latter by public ferry from Ampana, while Kadidiri is reachable by private speedboat from Waikai. Diving is the main activity in the Togean Islands.

Getting There & Away

The nearest airport is in Luwuk , 150kms to the east. Mutiara Airport in Palu , the Central Sulawesi capital, has more flight options including connections to Jakarta . Flights come in from Balikpapan and Makassar . Buses run from Palu to Ampana although they take the best part of a day. Ferries from Java take 24 hours.

Togean Islands: The Ultimate Travel Guide to The Paradise!

The Togean (or Togian) Islands are one of the less-traveled islands in  Indonesia . Isolated in the middle of Tomini Gulf, Central Sulawesi, Togean Islands are the best-kept secret islands, far from the frenetic crowd, which I love so.

One can argue – there’s nothing much to do here – that’s acceptable.

However, some people, including me are fond to a lone quiet place to rejuvenate ourselves.

Therefore, this island is unsuitable for everyone, it depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for an ideal tropical island to rest..maybe with a bit of adventure, then Togean Islands are the perfect bliss – a destination that will never disappoint you.

With impeccable lines of seabed, sprawling gardens of coral, and a rare opportunity to swim with sting-less jellyfish, Togean Islands will perhaps become one of the best travel experience you will never forget!

How to Get to Togean Islands

Togean Islands are located in the middle of Tomini Gulf. Two common routes to get to the islands are via Ampana and Gorontalo.

1. Getting to Togean Islands from Ampana

The easiest way to get to Ampana is by flying from Palu City.

From Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali , or Makassar , catch a flight to Palu then another flight to Ampana.

The flight schedule from Palu to Ampana is operated by Susi Air every Monday and Wednesday morning (booking number by whatsApp: +62 811-2127-144)

Once you’re in Ampana, you still have to get a boat to Wakai .

The boat leaves everyday at 10 a.m. and you will arrive around 1 p.m. (3 hours).

The price of the boat is Rp 150.000/person.

Recommended hotel for an overnight stay in Ampana is Lawaka Hotel (check rate)

2. Getting to Togean Islands from Gorontalo

Take a flight from Jakarta or Surabaya to Gorontalo.

Next, head to the ferry terminal which is about an hour.

Ferry to Wakai leaves from Gorontalo every Tuesday and Friday at 6 p.m.

The ferry ride takes around 12 hours and you will arrive in Wakai on the next morning.

The price for the ferry ride is:

  • Rp 64.000 for economy class (no AC)
  • Rp 89.000 for business class (with AC)
  • Rp 500.000 for a cabin, fits for 4 people.

Recommended hotel for an overnight stay in Gorontalo is Aston Gorontalo ( check the rates here ).

Once you’re in Wakai, it is easier to get to the islands around.

Some resorts can pick you up so it’s better if you arrange your accommodation and your arrival ahead.

If you have plenty of time, I strongly encourage you to do the whole Sulawesi Island, or overland from south to north or vice versa instead just flying to Togean Islands.

It’s because Togean Islands is located in the middle of Sulawesi and there are so many things to see in Sulawesi.

In my opinion, it’s a waste of time if you just do only Togean Islands unless you don’t really have much time.

If you’re planning to do overland. I suggest you to spare 1-2 months, even longer for the whole Sulawesi.

If you start from the south, you can fly to Makassar and then do everything by car or bus to Tana Toraja – Tentena – Poso – Ampana – Togean Islands – Gorontalo – Tomohon – Manado – Bunaken, or you can do from the north starting from Manado down to Makassar.

List of Togean Islands Accomodation

A range of typical beach resort with wooden bungalows under the shades of coconut trees and hammock in front of your room spreads in the islands of Togean.

Most of the accommodations offer full board package so it is included 3x meals.

Electricity is limited in the islands available only from 6 p.m. till midnight.

2. Fadhila Cottages

I spent couple of nights in Fadhila Cottages. It is located in a small island across Katupat Island.

I really like the warm ambience of the whole island, that feeling of staying in a quiet, natural, how do I explain this, it feels very down to earth for me.

The food here was fantastic with a generous portion, more than enough for everyone.

The huts are basic with mosquito net and hammock and expect to see bees, lizards, and spiders in your room.

The only thing that can be improved is the cleanliness of the room, overall it was satisfying. (Rp 200.000 – Rp 350.000/person/night)

3. Kadidiri Paradise

I also had a chance to stay in Kadidiri Paradise which is located in Kadidiri Island, not far from the jellyfish lake.

The resort is fancier with facilities such as canoe, volleyball net, and a hut on the pier for relaxing area.

The beach is not that impressive, and the food was okay at that time.

I would give an A for the cleanliness of the room. (Rp 200.000 – Rp 450.000/person/night)

4. Bahia Tomini Eco Resort

Located in Malenge Island, Bahia Tomini Eco Resort is my favorite place so far!

I didn’t stay here but soon when I saw this place, I fell in love and would love to come back and stay in this resort.

There are only 4 bungalows here and all of them are facing straight to the sea.

Perfect white sand beach and attractive design of the bungalows, I wouldn’t mind spending time in this super laid-back island. (Rp 350.000 – Rp 500.000/person/night)

5. Other recommendations

For budget option you can go to Sunset Beach , 20 minutes by boat from Wakai.

Another option is Araya Dive Resort which is the nearest dive center if you wish to dive in Pasir Tengah and Goa Goa.

10 Things to Do in Togean Islands

Now, check out these top 10 things to do in Togean Islands , trust me it’d be an amazing experience!

1. Plunge into the crystal-clear water of Togean Islands

The Togean Islands consist of small islands and islets. No matter which island you go or stay, you will most-likely find this dreamlike paradise – a calm crystal clear water right in front of your eyes.

It was hard for me to resist the temptation to jump into the water, refreshing myself under the warm heat of the sun and start making that tanning line.

I’m sure you’ll feel the same way as I do.

Snorkeling around the island is also a good idea to discover what lies below the surface.

2. Enjoy your time with no rush

It is almost impossible to get coverage in Togean Islands.

Electricity is also limited from 6-11 p.m. Forget your phone and forget about all the complicated things out there.

You are basically an outcast in this small island. I would use this chance to relax and do things that I like.

Most of the resorts provide hammock outside of each room. I would lay down and swing while reading books.

I would grab a pen and a paper, writing whatever I feel like.

I would play with the dogs, play volleyball, do yoga, or even chit chat with friends.

I would paddle a kayak, sing my favorite songs, or stare at the stars.

I wouldn’t mind spending time here! Five days were not long enough for me to stay in this paradise.

 Togean Islands

3. Dive, dive, and dive

Diving in Togean Islands are strongly encouraged, as the underwater offers impressive reef formations.

It’s one of the ultimate dive sites in Sulawesi .

Togean Islands are the epicenter of the world renowned “Coral Triangle”.

Dive sites are mostly concentrated in Kadidiri and Una-una Island.

I’ve heard good reviews from my friends who did scuba trip around the islands.

Some exquisite dive sites are including the Second World War fighter plane, the B24 Bomber, the atoll, and Una-una.

Expect to see black-tail barracuda, nudibranches, turtles, sharks, etc. Not a diver? Neither do I.

Snorkeling around Togean is enjoyable.

Favorite snorkeling sites are Hotel California and Reef 1. The reef was okay, though the fishes are not that diverse.

4. Paddle a boat in the middle of the night, see the glowing plankton

I haven’t done it myself but I saw a group of people with snorkeling mask, leaving Fadhila Cottage –  the resort where I stayed, and paddled the boat towards the sea in the middle of the dark.

When they came back, they told me they were swimming with the glowing plankton.

I have no idea how a glowing plankton looks like.

“It’s like swimming with the stars”, one of the girl told me.

5. Crossing from one island to another over a long wooden bridge

A long wooden bridge stretches about one kilometer between Malenge and Papan Island.

The bridge was built to connect both islands, make it easier for students from Papan Island to walk and attend the class at Malenge Island.

A local told me, before the bridge was built, the kids would swim back home after the class.

It was dangerous for them so the government finally built the bridge.

Walking across the iconic bridge is assuredly noteworthy as you can clearly see the corals beneath.

I spotted my favorite sea fan corals in the shallow water and before I left the island, I climbed a small hill named Batu Karang to get a wider view of the village and the bridge from the top.

6. Meet the curious indigenous local

The Bajo, often called as Sea Gypsies are the indigenous tribe that have settled in various areas of Indonesian water, such as Wakatobi Islands , including Togean Islands.

They live in stilt houses above the sea. It is said that The Bajo can dive 15-20 meters without using scuba gear. They own no car but boat.

The kids don’t play in the garden, instead they jump straight into the sea.

Papan Island is home to Bajo Families. I also visited another Bajo village in Kabalutan Island. In a glance, the population here looks bigger than Papan Island.

The kids were thrilled to see visitors coming to the village.

I was surrounded by all these kids, a four and a six-year old girl were holding my hand.

The older kids around teenager age in their school uniform started  a conversation with me.

I also had the opportunity to see a group of men involved in the process of building a stilt house.

7. Sit back at the edge of the pier, wait till dusk and enjoy the golden time

After a long tiring day hopping from one to another island, the best thing to do, except for dinner, of course, was sitting at the the edge of the pier and waiting for the sun to set down.

Every single moment made me realize, how lucky I was to be in this place.

It’d be great if I had a float tube with me, maybe a sunset dip sounds cool.

8. Play with sting-less jellyfish in Mariona Lake

Can you imagine how fun is it to swim with jellyfish? Wait, they are poisonous, aren’t they?

Some species of jellyfish can be really dangerous and deadly. I always get annoyed by the invisible jellyfish that sting when I snorkel.

However, in particular places in the world, we can swim the jellyfish because they’re sting-less.

In Indonesia, there are three places where you can swim with them – Kakaban Lake in Derawan Islands , Misool, and Mariona Lake in Togean.

They have lost their sting due to the geological event, since they’re trapped in a lagoon with no predators.

I doubt they completely lost their sting, because a friend of mine got stung on his lips and he could feel it.

Swimming with this adorable creature is definitely the highlight of this trip!

9. Introduce your taste bud to local delicacy

Almost every resort in the island offers full board package, means that the food or meals are inclusive with the price you paid along with your accommodation.

There are no restaurants or bars outside the resort.

Unquestionably they will serve seafood for you, freshly harvested from the sea.

The portion given tends to be generous, don’t worry, they won’t starve you.

One thing that caught my attention was sago.

Sago is a major staple food in eastern part of Indonesia.

It is a starch extracted from the spongy centre of various tropical palm stems.

There are many variations in processing sago.

It can be toasted, boiled to make a soup, or rolled into balls.

My favorite is the rolled balls, mixed with brown sugars and garnished with coconut flakes on top.

It has a bit of chewy texture and not overly sweet.

10. Learn from local communities on how they recycle plastics to handicrafts

In order to sustain the local’s living through tourism and to keep the environment clean, a non-profit called Everto encouraged the locals to use and recycle plastic, and turn them into beautiful handicrafts.

Stands for Everyone for Togean, the organization aims to raise awareness and educate the people of the importance of the ocean, home for them.

In Katupat Island, you can see the process of making this handicraft.

The souvenirs such as keychain, hat, or purse are sold ranging from $2-$10.

The money they collected are distributed as the wages for the waste collector in the island.

I’ve some up ten things to do in the Togean Islands, which one you’d like to do the most?

I assure you that this undiscovered paradise are worth to visit. I’ve met returning travelers from French, Australia, that could spend a month in this island!

Lastly, I would thank Ministry of Tourism for inviting me in this six day trips around Togean.

I had so much fun! They have ticked-off my bucket-list to travel in Togean.

Look no further than the enchanting Togean Islands, an archipelago tucked away in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. In this comprehensive guide, we'll show you how to get to the Togean Islands in 2023, so you can embark on your unforgettable Indonesian adventure.

At the end of the article, we will share a simple graphic to help you pick your ideas route. We will also share with you what is our guests' preferred route.

1. Arriving in Indonesia: Your Gateway to Adventure

Kick off your journey by booking a flight to Indonesia. Most international travelers land at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta or Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Bali. From there, you'll need to catch a domestic flight to one of the airports closest to the Togean Islands.

2. Catching a Domestic Flight: The First Step to get to Togean Islands

The nearest airports to the Togean Islands are Tanjung Api Airport (OJU) in Ampana and Jalaluddin Airport (GTO) in Gorontalo . Several airlines operate flights to these airports from major Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Bali, Makassar, Palu and Surabaya . Check the flight schedules and book your tickets early to ensure a smooth journey.

Pro tip: In some cases, it might be more convenient to land in an alternative airport like Luwuk, and rent a car to reach Ampana (see option 3 below for our guests' preferred route).

How to get to Ampana

Getting around

Ampana is your gateway into Central and Southern Sulawesi. Sample bus destinations from Ampana include: Luwuk: Departs daily at 21:00, taking seven hours and costing 110,000 rupiah. Makassar: Departs daily at 23:00, taking roughly 30 hours and costing 280,000 rupiah. This bus goes via Tentena, Pendolo and Palopo. If you're planning on doing this in one hit, we'd recommend considering exiting to Gorontalo and flying to Makassar as the airfare can be quite affordable if booked sufficiently in advance. Palu: Departs daily at 10:00 and 17:00, taking nine hours and costing 120,000 rupiah. Poso: Departs daily at 10:00 and 17:00, taking four hours and costing 70,000 rupiah. Private drivers can also be arranged for those who prefer to get a Kijang for a run to Rantepao -- ask at your guesthouse for details or recommendations for a good driver.

From Ampana The Puspita Sari departs Ampana on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, stopping at Wakai, Katupat and Malenge. It departs Ampana at 10:00, arriving at Wakai at 15:00, Katupat at 16:30 and Malenge at 18:00, with a half-hour (or so) stop at each port. In the reverse direction, it departs from Malenge on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, leaving Malenge at 06:00, Katupat at 07:30 and Wakai at 10:00 for a final arrival in Ampana at 15:00. The trip from Malenge costs 50,000 rupiah. There is also a twice-weekly service from Ampana to Dolong, leaving Ampana on Tuesday and Friday at 21:00 and arriving at Dolong the next morning at 07:00. In the reverse direction, the boat leaves Dolong on Sunday and Thursday at 14:00 and arriving in Ampana at 23:00. The Dolong service is really only practical for those headed to Sifa Cottage or Walea Dive Resort; the Puspita Sari is more frequent and better timed. From Labuhan From this small village a 10-minute ojek ride to the east of Ampana, regular public ferries run to Bomba at the western tip of the Togeans. This is convenient only really if you are staying at Poya Lisa or Island Retreat, as otherwise you'll have to then charter an outrigger for the three-hour ride to Wakai (and onwards to your eventual destination). According to the timetable, these boats depart Wakai on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday at 09:00 and arrive in Bomba at 12:00; in the reverse direction, they leave Bomba on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 09:00, arriving in Ampana at 12:00. However, in practice, we found this service (in July and August, at least) to run daily, with sometimes three or four boats leaving each day (all around the same time). Ask around in Ampana or at your guesthouse in the Togeans for the latest information in this regard; don't rely on them being daily if you're planning from afar. The fare is 25,000 rupiah, though boats can also be chartered to do this run -- we were offered a boat in Labuhan (the small village outside Ampana) for 250,000 rupiah. Bear in mind that the service to and from Labuhan doubles as a cargo service and you may spend considerable time (hours) waiting for the boat to be loaded and unloaded -- bring a book.

Central Ampana is small enough to walk around. Ojeks are a dime a dozen should you need to head further afield to either the Mandiri ATM or Labuhan for the boat to Bomba. A few kilometres to the east of town are a couple of pretty decent beaches. While we didn't investigate further (we just spied them from the public ferry from Bomba) if you were in Ampana for a few days for some reason, the beaches could make for an interesting boat trip -- ask around at the Information Office, pier, or the boat pilots at Labuhan for possibilities.

Ampana's long-rumoured airport is yet to reach operating status and while we didn't bother riding out to the site to check progress, given one local told us they were still buying the land while another said they had just finished the terminal, we guess it still has a way to go. Perhaps 2014?

The Spice Route End

Independent travel & culture guides to indonesia, 10 days in the togian islands.

January 30, 2017 Elliot Central & North Sulawesi 1

Togian islands ( Kepulauan Togian ) are a group of about 50 islands located in the gulf of Tomini, in the province of Central Sulawesi. Getting there is quite long, but I guarantee it’s worth the trip.

Like often in Indonesia, it’s a melting pot of people from different ethnical groups: Togian, Bobongko, Bajo, Bugis … They are among the friendliest people I’ve met in Indonesia, hence implying they are truly adorable given how friendly Indonesian people are in general.

Local people traditionally make their livings off fishery, pearl trade and cloves. Tourism brings a steady flow of guests to the archipelago, but its scale remains limited.

Understanding the area

I made a map that should help you to understand how Togian (also called Togean) works.

The tourist track follows the cargo boat that connects Ampana to Wakai and then stops in Katupat, Malenge, Popolii and Dolong (the boat also stops in other villages between).

As you can see on the map, accomodations that cater to tourists are distributed among 5 locations.

I decided to avoid Kadidiri area where you have a lot of resorts (Black Marlin, Paradise, Pondok Lestari, Sunset, Harmony Bay …). They might be quite good, I have no idea. But :

  • I try to avoid places where you have (or expect) a lot of tourists.
  • Fadhila and Malenge are actually closer to most of the attractions of the Togian.

I stayed in Fadhila Cottages and then in Sera Beach on Malenge and eventually in Una Una Sanctum, so I will dwell upon them later. Lia Beach is quite far but I think it’s worth a try if you have time.

Katupat area

Chilling in fadhila cottages.

Fadhila cottages is located on a small islands off Katupat (pulau Pangempang). They offer free ride (5 min) to and from Katupat whenever you want. The price is 200,000Rp per person per day (including 3 meals).

This place is perfect to relax, there is neither Internet connection nor phone signal. The staff is nice and the food is good.

You can go swimming and snorkeling around the island. Don’t hesitate to join the daily football or volleyball game in Katupat.

They offer several excursion from 425’000 to 600’000 IDR to be shared between 6 to 8 people. It’s mostly snorkeling but they can also take you in the nature or in remote villages. Diving is also available (but I knew I was to dive in Una Una so I didn’t try).

Exploring Lembanato

From Katupat, a 20 minutes walk will take you to Lembanato, another village on the other side of the hill that stands behind Katupat.

In Lembanato, no one speaks English and there is no permanent homestay either (but I don’t doubt any second you could arrange one). I got a much more authentic overview of the life in the Togian there. Beyond the postcard, local people remain very poor and lack almost all of the modern comfort.

The village shall be connected to the power grid in 2017 and a new road large enough for cars shall also be build between Katupat and Lembanato this year.

I spent one afternoon talking with anyone I would meet there. I really enjoyed this time but I’m afraid the contact will be very limited if you cannot speak Indonesian. You can still expect a swarm of cheerful kids following you everywhere.

The jellyfish lake

About 40 minutes from Fadhila you have a lake filled with harmless jellyfish. Thousands years ago they got stucked there without any predators around, thus they never developed any defence mechanism. You can swim with them and even touch them (very gently and as few as possible).

I know at least 4 others places with a similar lake in Indonesia ( Derawan , Buton , Misool, Banggai) as well as one in Palau so it’s not that uncommon.

Malenge area

Where to stay in malenge .

You have a lots of options almost all located on the North coast of Malenge islands. I’ve chosen Sera Beach and was quite satisfied. Price are the same than in Fadhila (200’000 IDR per person per day).

The manager (Nuir) is really nice and knows a lot about the local wildlife (both on land and underwater). At any moment of the day you can enjoy the huge natural pool in front of the resort. They stroke a deal with local fishermen so they don’t fish in front of the resort. The snorkeling on the house reef is also quite good : lots of fish, baby sharks, some nudibranchs if you look closely. I got even told you could see some eagle rays sometimes.

Behind the resorts, there is an huge garden on the slope of the hill. It’s owned by a sole guy that grows black beans, chilies, eggplants, tomatoes, bananaes, papayas, pineapples …

The trees hosts several kind of birds. According to the farmer, it’s better to come early in the morning to watch them, even though I spot hornbills only during the afternoon. He also told me there were a lot of monkeys around noon.

In front of Pulau Papan you have Lestari Cottages (not the same as Pondok Lestari on Kadidiri) which I think is also quite good, that would have been my second choice if I had to change.

Papan island and its iconic jetty

It’s definitely the most iconic view of Togian islands : the two kilometers jetty that connects the village on Pulau Papan to the village of Kadoda (where the elementary school is).

I advise you to get dropped off in Kadoda and then walk to Pulau Papan. Your boat can pick you up there.

The jetty picture above is the renovated one. Before the building of the jetty, kids were relying on boat to go back from school. Some days there was no boat so they would just take off their cloth and swim back to their house while holding there school uniform off the water with one hand.

I read on numerous occasions that the village on Pulau Papan was a bajo village. But all inhabitants I asked the question told me there were no bajo living here.

So I don’t know exactly what is the reality but from my discussions with inhabitants I understand this is not a “sea gypsies” village, even though it’s built on the water.

Things to do in Malenge

The best snorkeling spots are located off Malenge. I was a bit pressed by time so I didn’t try them given I was heading for Una Una afterwards.

I just notice that all resorts in Kadidiri offer trips there but no resort in Malenge offer trip to Kadidiri. So I guess there is a good reason for that.

It’s allegedly possible to walk across the islands through the nature in about 2 hours. Among the wildlife that can be spotted I heard about coconut crabs, birds and some babirussa (very rare).

Unfortunately I understand there are too many dogs on the islands and they are driving the babirussa population down by hunting them.

Una Una area

I dived for 3 days in Una Una sanctum that is run by Andri and his Finnish wife, who wasn’t there when I visited. The diving is great: huge schools of barracudas and jacks in front of the resort, nice walls, some muck, corral gardens…

Gears and divemasters (at the moment of my visit 2 instructors) are also top quality.

Una Una is quite far from the rest of the islands (3 hours by boat from Wakai) so I don’t advise you to go there unless you wanna dive.

The public ferry from Wakai to Una Una costs 30’000Rp. Chartering a local boat costed me 600’000Rp (one way).

How to go to the Togian islands ?

To put it in a nutshell, the fastest you can do to reach Togian from Jakarta or Denpasar is 2 days, which can be push down to 1 day if you are willing to charter your own boat.

You can get there either from the South (by Ampana) or the North (by Gorontalo). There is another ferry leaving from Bumbulan to Dolong twice a week.

Almost all the boats will take you first to Wakai, which is the transport hub.

Before planning your trip, please note that boats are not leaving daily, hence your itinerary is going to depends mostly on the schedule.

The owner of Lia Beach Resort keeps updated a free boat schedule on her website [ Update : it seems that Lia Beach now gives out its boat schedule as a marketing anchor to subscribe to their newsletter]

The South road : Makassar > Rantepao > Ampana

From Makassar you spend a few days in Tana Toraja , then hit the road to Ampana. At Ampana I got told it takes 16 hours by car and 20 hours by bus. I met 2 couples who told me their bus trip took even longer.

A possibility is to slip the road in two by stopping in Tentena overnight.

The fast boat from Ampana to Wakai costs 130’000Rp, the slow boat 75’000Rp (2017).

The North road : Manado > Gorontalo (or Bumbulan)

If you choose this, you are likely to spend first a few days in Bunaken off Manado’s coast. The transport are easier to arrange for this one (because both Manado and Gorontalo are larger cities) but still long.

The ferry from Gorontalo costs 90’000Rp.

Tips when stopping in Ampana and Gorontalo

There are airports both in Ampana and Gorontalo.

The airport in Ampana is quite new but has connections every day to Palu and Luwuk. From Palu you got connections to Jakarta, Makassar and Denpasar.

The issue is that there is no flight landing before the departure of the boats to Wakai, so you’ll have to spend a night in Ampana.

Update 2019 : the route Palu – Ampana has been closed ( source ).

I stayed at Oasis Hotel (standard room for 160,000IDR with AC and breakfast). In the same street you have a  losmen  that should offer cheaper room if you are on a budget.

If you are ready to pay the price (probably around 1,5 or 2 million IDR) it’s possible to charter a boat that will wait for you to land before departing for Togian. Hence it’s possible to land in Ampana in the end of the morning and in Togian during the afternoon.

Ask your hotel to arrange it from you or you can contact Dudi on Whatsapp : +62 852 4199 8586.

Given Gorontalo is a larger city, there is much more flights in and out. Please note that the harbour is quite far from the airport (44 km). It took me one hour on bentor at 4:30AM.

An exemple of planning : my trip

I took off from Jakarta on Friday at 5:00 to land in Palu at 8:35AM (1 hour difference from Jakarta). Then I catch another flight from Palu to Ampana that lasts 1 hour. It was scheduled at 10:40 but eventually left at 11:40.

I stayed overnight in Ampana and then wanted to take the speed boat on Saturday morning. Because of the bad weather it was cancelled so I had to take the slow boat which is a kind of cargo. The boat left at 10AM and arrived in Wakai around 14:00 in Katupat at 16:40.

On Monday I catched again the slow boat from Katupat to Malenge. On Thursday I chartered a boat to take me back to Wakai. Then I chartered another boat to take me to Una-Una (3 hours in theory but we left at 14:00 and arrived at 22:00 because we waited behind Kadidiri for the weather to calm down).

On the next Monday I went back from Una-Una to Wakai using the public boat and waited for the ferry at 16:00 to take me back to Gorontalo. We arrived at 4:30 and I catch my flight back to Jakarta at 07:00.

Chartering a boat

Local fishermen will be happy to take you around in their boat ( ketinting ). It will costs you more than the public boat but price remain reasonable especially if you share with other passengers.

Unless you have plenty of time you will likely need to charter a boat at one point to optimize your trip. Don’t hesitate to talk with the captain to include some stops.

For instance if you have to go back from Malenge to Katupat, you can ask your boat to stop first at a reef off Malenge for snorkeling, then at the jellyfish lake and finaly to Wakai.

Best time to go to visit Togian islands

Togian are nice year round but are quite crowded during the summer (especially in July and August). Reservations ahead is highly recommended.

If you are alone during this period, most of the resorts will ask you to share your room with someone else (or pay for 2 people).

Wind can also be quite strong from December to January and the boat planning is easily disrupted.

Togian Islands Travel Guide: How to Get to Paradise

' src=

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, and many of its 17,000 islands are famed for their beauty. Sulawesi’s Togian Islands, though, may be the best of the lot. Home to some truly world-class snorkelling and diving, these unspoilt islands are great for getting away from the chaos of urban Indonesia. Electricity is irregular, there is no internet connection, and phone signal is sporadic. This, combined with the islands’ friendly people and abundance of great resort hotels, makes the Togians perfect for a tropical island getaway.

Getting to the Togian Islands

Getting to the Togians is the biggest challenge they pose. The islands are not difficult to reach, but whichever way you come from, it takes a long time. This puts a lot of travellers off, but it is largely why they remain so unspoilt for the rest of us. There are two points of entry. The first is from Gorontalo in the north, which is the easiest route as it has an airport – however, the ferry is less frequent. The second is from Ampana in the south. Whichever way you come, you will probably arrive in Wakai, the Togians’ main transport hub on the island of Batu Daka.

Getting to the Togian Islands from Gorontalo

Gorontalo’s airport connects to Makassar, Manado and Luwuk, all in Sulawesi. From Gorontalo’s port, a ferry departs for Wakai every Tuesday and Friday, but this is subject to change. The ferry departs around 5pm and takes around 12 hours. The return boat to Gorontalo leaves at around 4pm on Mondays and Thursdays.

Getting to the Togian Islands from Ampana

Many visitors to the Togians come overland from the south, having visited Tanah Toraja. If this is you, you’ll probably come to the Togian Islands from Ampana. Ampana also has an airport, which currently flies to Makassar, but it’s very small and service is erratic. Boats from Ampana to Wakai depart from Monday to Thursday at 10am, and at 9am on Sundays. In the other direction, from Wakai to Ampana, boats depart at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 7am on Wednesday.

From Ampana, It’s also possible to reach the Togians via another port, Bomba, also on Batu Daka. This is more convenient if you’re planning to stay in or near Bomba. From Ampana, boats for Bomba leave on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday at 9am; the return boat leaves on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, also at 9am.

Which Togian Island to choose

There are 56 islands in the Togian archipelago, but only a handful are inhabited or regularly visited by tourists. Because it is quite difficult to get around the islands, most people will only visit one or two of them during their time here. Where you go depends on what you are looking for; some hotels cater specifically to divers, while others are great for just relaxing on the beach. It’s important to choose your hotel wisely, as you’ll spend pretty much all your time and eat all your meals there.

Whichever island you choose to head to, your hotel will arrange to pick you up from the ferry at Wakai then take you in a smaller boat. Given the difficulty of getting to the Togians and getting around, it is highly recommended that you book in advance.

For divers, Kadidiri is the best island to head to. Its long, golden beach is home to three resort hotels: Kadidiri Paradise , Black Marlin , and Lestari . The former two are very much aimed at divers; at Black Marlin in particular, non-divers may feel a little out of place. Kadidiri is also the most social spot in the Togians. Kadidiri Paradise has a lively bar which spills out onto the beach and is a great place to meet your fellow travellers. Lestari is a little more relaxed and cheaper than the other two. It’s not a dive resort, but they can arrange snorkelling trips.

If Kadidiri’s social scene doesn’t appeal, you may prefer the tiny island of Bolilanga. The only place to stay is Bolilanga Island Resort , a friendly place with a range of beach bungalows. Divers will probably look elsewhere, but if you want to snorkel, fish, or just laze on the beach, this is the place for you.

Bomba sits on the western edge of Batu Daka, the main island in the Togians. As mentioned above, it can be reached directly from Ampana. If you’re operating on a slightly higher budget, a fantastic choice is Island Retreat . As with everywhere in the Togians, this is a collection of wooden bungalows, but they’re very comfortable and sit on a beautiful stretch of beach. Run by a friendly American woman, this resort is great for diving, snorkelling, or lounging on the beach – and the food is absolutely fantastic.

Eating in the Togian Islands

As mentioned above, all your meals in the Togians will be taken at your hotel, except for the odd packed lunch on a day trip. The food is usually simple but fantastic at the hotels, taking the form of mountains of rice and vegetables with the freshest seafood. Meals are often served communally, a great way to meet your fellow travellers.

Activities in the Togian Islands

Many visitors to the Togian Islands come for one reason: scuba diving. The Togians are much quieter and less spoilt than surf hotspots in places like Bali. They don’t boast the greatest biodiversity in Indonesia, but still provide good opportunities to spot sea turtles, rays and sharks among much other sea life. If you’re not a diver, snorkelling trips are very popular too.

The Togians are also home to the Bajo people, a community of ‘sea gypsies’ who spend much of their lives in the water. Boat trips are available to take you to their villages, where you can meet them and buy some freshly caught seafood for lunch.

Final thoughts

The Togian Islands are hard to reach, but worth it for the determined traveller. They are a beautifully unspoilt collection of islands, and diving and snorkelling are very popular. Cultural trips are also on offer to visit the Bajo, a community of semi-nomadic sea gypsies.

Have you been to the Togian Islands? Do you have any suggestions about where to stay or what to do not listed above? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ve been to Togian and stayed at Fadhilla cottage in Pangempa island, in front of Katupat island and next to Bolilanga Island Resort. The public boat would stop in Katupat island after its first stop in Wakai. The speed boat would pick up from Katupat and only less than 5 minutes to get the cottage. The ambiance was excellent with hammock in front of the room, superb view and delicious food. Mr Jafar as a owner of Fadhila Cottage would be glad to explain you about Togian. He was so nice and friendly guy! And dont worry If you want to dive, Fadhilla also provide diving tour and Mr Jafar will accompany you to dive.

That sounds like quite an experience. Thanks Erva for providing all that information 🙂

Any help would be great thanks as we are flying in from KL

We travel with our 2 children aged 10 & 13 years old so long bus trips (over 6 hours) really don't appeal anymore.

Thanks everyone, we will try to get to the Togeans first and see what happens.

Otherwise will have a look at other suggested options.

Maddijett, you are welcome and travel safely!

Yes - enjoy your trip

Another question I have is: is it correct that AVIASTAR has stopped flying? Used that airline to fly from Palu to Ampana in the beginning of this year. In a thread you mentioned Express Air and Wings, flying fom Palu to Ampana. Do you know if there are also to/from Ampana to Luwuk, and/or Gorontalo.

It was rumoured that Ampana airport would be fully operational from about last summer. But it does not seem to be yet. Have you any idea whether there will be a chance there are flights between UPG and Ampana before the end of the year? I want to fly to Ampana on the 5th of january 2017, back 20/01/2017.

With regards, Margreet Wind

Via UPG you'll need to overnight in VPM-PLW with quite short connection time. I think KUL-CGK-PLW works better - arrive there late overnight in PLW and take the moring flight PLW-AMP.

Lion air almost does not exist.......

Sulawesi Travel Guide: 10 Things to Do, Itinerary + Tips!

' src=

Sulawesi is an amazing hidden gem island in Indonesia that I was lucky enough to spend three weeks traveling – Out of all the different islands I have visited in Indonesia, Sulawesi was the most culturally rich and diverse in climate. Traveling Sulawesi won’t be for everyone, since it’s a more remote and off-the-beaten-path destination, but I highly recommend it for those with an adventurous spirit.

travel makassar ampana

All About Sulawesi & Tana Toraja

Sulawesi is a major island in Indonesia that has started to make a name for itself as an amazing, off-the-beaten-path tourist destination.  Home to world-class diving, nature reserves, tropical islands, waterfalls, etc, it’s amazing that most travelers visiting Bali have never heard of it.

In Sulawesi, the crown jewel for tourism is Tana Toraja Village. Often referred to as Indonesia’s “Funeral Village”, Tana Toraja is a traditional town in Indonesia where funerals are highly celebrated and very expensive. Similar to how in some cultures weddings are the highlight of one’s life, in Toraja, it’s all about their funerals!

A neatly organized row of human skulls stacked on top of each other on a rock coffin in Tana Toraja.

Frequently costing as much as 50,000 US Dollars, funerals in Toraja are massive events that attract visitors from all over the world. In addition to the massive funeral celebrations, Toraja also has ritualistic burial sites that date back thousands of years. My favorite site to visit was Londa Funeral Cave, where you can explore massive natural catacombs and see how burial traditions have changed as Toraja became a majority Catholic culture and blended that with their original beliefs.

How Long Should You Spend in Sulawesi?

For just Tana Toraja, 3 – 5 days should be enough to see the highlights. If you want to explore the island of Sulawesi, I recommend at least 2 weeks . I spent 17 days, around 2.5 weeks, exploring the island of Sulawesi. While I think that was an adequate amount of time, there were still some amazing sites that we didn’t get to see. Truth be told, I could have easily spent a month or more in Sulawesi without getting bored!

Top 10 Best Things to Do in Sulawesi

1. visit tana toraja funeral village.

I enjoy cultural travel destinations, and visiting Toraja for a funeral ceremony takes the cake of all the experiences I’ve had in Indonesia. Toraja is also known as Indonesia’s “Funeral Village”, or less-charmingly, “Death Village”. While some cultures celebrate weddings, Toraja is  all about funerals.  A Torajan funeral ceremony can frequently cost the families 20-30,000 US dollars, as the ceremonies go on for days and involve sacrificing buffalo – Albino or spotted buffalos can cost $30,000,  each !

They have a very different idea of death in Torajan culture than we do in the West. While traveling in Toraja, we saw relatives happy to see their deceased loved ones again during the Ma’Nene ceremonies, dressing up the corpse even joking around and putting sunglasses on it (!!!).  If you’re squeamish about dead bodies, Toraja might not be your idea of a travel destination, but it’s certainly interesting.

👉 My Favorite Things to Do in Tana Toraja

✔️  Attend a “Ma’Nene” ceremony  – Where the relatives of the deceased uncover the corpses of their relatives every 3 years and redress them.

✔️  Attend a Torajan Funeral  – Typically lasting over 3 days, the funerals are large ceremonies. Bring cigarettes or some other offering for the families, and enjoy eating lunch with the locals.

✔️  Visit Londa Funeral Cave  – Going caving through Londa, led by a guide and a gaslamp through the Torajan catacombs, was the most interesting thing we did in Sulawesi.

✔️  Visit Bori Kalimbuang  – UNESCO world heritage site.

2. Stay On a Private Beach in the Togean Islands

The Togean Islands are a gorgeous hidden-gem archipelago off the coast of Sulawesi. You can reach the Togeans by taking an overnight local ferry from Gorontalo, or a 2-hour fast-boat from Ampana. The Togeans have a ton of resorts scattered around on different secluded beaches. Typically, resorts in the Togeans are all-inclusive, meaning you’ll have all of your meals at the resort.

🏨 Where to Stay: We chose Sera Beach Resort because it has one of the better private beaches, but due to its remote location in the Togeans, it has fewer amenities than those closer to the main port.

👉 Be Ready to Rough It: We only had electricity from 7-9 PM every night, there was no AC in the rooms, and no cellular access or wifi. I loved the Togeans, but they’re not for everyone!

Blogger Katie Caf holds a jellyfish in her hands the stingless jellyfish lake in the Togean Islands. The Togeans are one of many places you can visit on a Sulawesi Tour.

3. Swim With the Stingless Jellyfish in the Togeans

You can swim with the wild stingless jellyfish in a brackish lake in the Togean Islands. Once upon a time, the lake was open to the ocean. That’s why the water is brackish rather than freshwater. As the millennia went by, the inlet naturally closed itself to the ocean and became a lake, containing jellyfish within it. Without sea turtles and other natural predators, the jellyfish in the lake evolved to lose their stingers, since they didn’t need them to defend themselves. I also swam with the stingless jellyfish in Siargao , in the Philippines, and the jellyfish lake in Sulawesi gets far fewer tourists – We were the only people there when we visited the jellyfish lake in the Togeans!

Tarsier in Tangkoko National Park, North Sulawesi

4. See the Wild Tarsiers at Tangkoko Nature Reserve

Tangkoko Nature Reserve is one of the only places in the world where you can see wild Tarsiers. The most popular way to visit Tangkoko Nature Reserve is by staying in a lodge near the park and taking sunrise and sunset nature walks. Tarsiers only come out around dusk, I immensely enjoyed our walk to the Tarsier’s tree where we got to watch them emerge from their nests as the sun went down. In addition to the Tarsiers, there are also Black Macaques. I know that there are plenty of monkeys in Bali , but something about seeing them up close and in the wild in Tangkoko was extra special.

5. Swim With the Whale Sharks in Gorontalo

Off the coast of Gorontalo, a port town where you can take an overnight ferry to the Togean Islands, you can swim with the wild whale sharks every morning. The Whale Sharks started coming off the coast of Gorontalo around 15 years ago when a fish processing plant was built in the town. Feasting on the waste from the plant, the Whale Sharks started annually migrating there. Ingenuous locals decided to capitalize on their new wildlife and now Whale Shark snorkeling tours have become one of the most popular things to do in the area.

👉 Note: Do know that the whale sharks are wild animals, and are not always at the morning snorkeling spot.

6. Go Scuba Diving in Bunaken National Marine Park

Bunaken National Marine Park, located in the Manado Bay of northern Sulawesi, stands out as one of the premier scuba diving destinations in the country. I’ve heard it compared to the renown Raja Ampat, but I wouldn’t know because I do not know how to dive! Even If you don’t scuba dive, the crystal-clear waters surrounding Bunaken offer fantastic snorkeling opportunities.

7. Take in the Volcano Views in Tomahon

Tomahon was an unexpected hit. We stayed there one night in between visiting Tangkoko Nature Reserve and Gorontalo, but I could have easily stayed a few more days. There are these amazing hotels in Tomahon that have views of the volcano and little photo nests set up for tourists. If you have more time in Tomahon, you can do a trek partially or all the way up the volcano.

🏨 Where to Stay in Tomahon

  • Gardenia Country Inn – This gorgeous hotel with volcano views has a fairy-tale village aesthetic.

8. Visit an Extreme Market

Eating exotic animals isn’t really my idea of a good time, but I should mention that Sulawesi’s “Extreme Markets” are pretty famous. In the Extreme Market in Tomahon,, you can eat local Indonesian street food , as well as snakes, rats, bats, and sadly, dogs.

9. Swim in Saluopa Waterfall in Tentena

Saluopa Waterfall is the main attraction in Tentena, a stopover town between the Togean Islands and Tana Toraja Village. Featuring a cascading waterfall that drops into different tiers of natural pools you can swim in, Saluopa is a beautiful waterfall that rivals any I’ve visited in Indonesia.

Katie’s Tips ✶

Saluopa Waterfall is very popular in the local community, get there as soon as it opens if you want to have a swim to yourself!

My Top Travel Tips for Sulawesi

✅ be ready to rough it a little bit.

Sulawesi was not an easy destination to travel in compared to Indonesia’s more convenient tourist paradises like Bali. We had to do a lot of lengthy travel days to fit everything we wanted to do in Sulawesi into the three weeks we were there. This included 14-hour local ferries, and overnight car and bus rides. As well as lots of nights in 3-star hotels in the middle of nowhere with no AC or internet -This is what we did, but it’s by no means necessary for all travelers.

Sulawesi is huge, way bigger than Bali – There are areas of Sulawesi with 5-star hotels and local airports, and areas on tiny remote islands off the mainland with barely any electricity. It’s what you make of it. If you choose to take internal flights rather than overland transport and do a more simplistic travel itinerary of Sulawesi, you can cut down on a lot of the long travel days we did.

✅ I Wouldn’t Recommend Sulawesi for Solo Travel

As I mentioned before, Sulawesi doesn’t get that many travelers. I wouldn’t feel confident recommending it for solo backpackers if making friends on the road is important to you. We did meet some people in our three weeks in Sulawesi, but they were mostly couples and families.

Is Sulawesi Worth Visiting? My Take

I absolutely  loved  my three weeks traveling in Sulawesi and fully believe it to be worth the trip. I  live in Bali , and while it’s paradise in my opinion, Bali is infamously crowded. In Sulawesi, you get the feeling that what you are seeing is more natural, untouched, and unique. I highly recommend Sulawesi overall for travelers who are interested in natural wonders, and Tana Toraja for those who love locations with cultural significance. I had visited  Wae Rebo  in Flores, another traditional village in Indonesia, and Toraja was just a step beyond – The way that everything there, from the food to the architecture, is so different from the rest of Indonesia, it feels like you’ve traveled to a new country!

How to Get to Sulawesi from Bali

The easiest way to get to Sulawesi from Bali is by taking a short flight. You can start your tour in the south, in Makassar city, or in the north, at Manado City. Both cities have airports that are served with flights to/from Bali multiple times a day.

How to Get to Tana Toraja

To get to/from Makassar to Toraja you can take an overnight bus designed for the many Torajans that commute to Makassar. These buses are VIP and super comfortable, with padded beds and blankets. Or, if you don’t have the time for a bus, you can also take a short flight to Toraja’s new airport.

💰  Budget Tip!  Tours to Tana Toraja usually include a private car transfer from Makassar, when booked independently this can cost up to $250.

A boat in clear blue water in the Togean Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Sulawesi Travel Ititnerary

There’s a set tourist trail in Sulawesi, usually starting from the north of the island in Manadao or the south in Makassar. We started our travels in the North, and here’s an example of Sulawesi’s tourist trail going from North to South: You can edit the amount of time you spend in each location, but this is the most you can fit into a 14-day Sulawesi itinerary:

  • Fly into Manado
  • Go scuba diving at Bunaken – 2 Nights
  • Visit Tangkoko National Park to see macaques and tarsiers – 2 Nights
  • Stay at a volcano-view hotel in Tomahon – 1 Night
  • Go swimming with the whale sharks in Gorontalo – 1 Night
  • Take the overnight ferry from Gorontalo to the Togean Islands – 3 Nights
  • Swim with the stingless jellyfish in the Togeans
  • Take a speedboat to Ampana, drive to Tentena – 1 Night
  • Visit the waterfall and stay a night in Tentena
  • Stay in Toraja for a traditional funeral – 3 Nights
  • Take the overnight bus or fly to Makassar, where you can depart back to Bali or other Indonesian islands.

💡  Tip!  You can reverse this itinerary and start your tour in the south, at Makassar. Flights between Makassar and Manado run multiple times per day.

Is Sulawesi Safe for Tourists?

I never felt unsafe traveling in Sulawesi, neither as a female nor as a foreigner. That being said, no international travel comes without risks. Sulawesi is the least developed island I’ve been to in Indonesia, and it’s also the least touristed. Frequently, we would be included in just a handful of foreigners wherever we were – and we were traveling to all the top tourist spots on the island!

There was a lot of charm to this, being off the beaten path and all, but there were also some downsides to standing out so much. For example, while we were able to  rent scooters like in Bali  and drive ourselves around Tana Toraja, we were told that a foreigner driving in Gorontalo would be unheard of. We would stand out too much, and no one was willing to rent to us.

You also get a lot of attention as a foreigner in Toraja. Every other second we were being dragged to take photos with people – Then a photo shoot would last 15 minutes, at least, as everyone wanted a picture with the odd foreigners 😂.

FAQ on Torajaland

How to get to tana toraja.

Makassar is the gateway to Tana Toraja, and Rantepao is the base from which to explore Tana Toraja.

Fly to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar . From here you can reach Rantepao both via land and by air.

By Air . Take the morning flight from Makassar to Palopo Bua Airport (±1 hour), located ±2 hour drive from Rantepao. We can pick you up here. Use SkyScanner to search for international and domestic flights.

Warning: While Rantepao also has a small airport "Pongtiku", we advice against flying there, as occasionally flights are either delayed or canceled.

Taxi . Take a private transfer from the airport to Rantepao (±7/8 hours). You could make stops at interesting sites on route (Bugis village, Erotic mountains), make a ±2 hour detour to visit Rammang Rammang , or break the journey with an overnight at Sengkang .

Bus . The cheapest option is to take the bus (±9/10 hours). There are many bus companies with different prices and each bus has several seat classes. Always take the "VIP" seats as these are the most comfortable. Bus companies include Litha & Co, Manggala Trans and Primadona. Usually you need to buy the bus tickets locally, but Primadona has a (primitive) online booking system and an email address ( [email protected] ).

What to see on the drive from Makassar to Tana Toraja?

Interesting sites on route from Makassar to Rantepao in Tana Toraja are:

  • 1. The Bugis Makassar village
  • 2. The "Erotic mountain" in Bambapuang
  • 3. The famous stone grave "Lemo"
  • 4. The Torajan traditional village " Sasa"

If you leave early in the morning, you could also consider visiting Rammang Rammang and make a guided boat trip and trek.

Notice that the drive to Tana Toraja easily takes 8 hours and could even be longer depending on traffic. So don't be too ambitious with your wishlist and manage your expectations that some sites may have to be skipped depending on the traffic.

Can I get a private transfer Makassar - Tana Toraja by night?

Yes. Our private airport transport can be at any time you wish.

In case you have an early flight to catch in Makassar, we could either drop you off the night before in Makassar so that you rest in a nearby hotel, or we could transport you at night and drop you off at the airport in the morning. As you wish.

What is the best period to visit Tana Toraja?

From a climate point of view, Tana Toraja can be visited all year long. While the temperature is fairly constant throughout the year, chances for the best weather are in the dry season from mid April to early October. However, the rain season in Tana Toraja is not as wet as in other places in Indonesia; typically there is short rain shower in the late afternoon, if it rains at all. In the worst case it could rain half a day.

The best period to visit Tana Toraja to attend a funeral ceremony is July – August. In these months you will be able to attend a ceremony with near certainty if you stay in Tana Toraja for 3 days or more. At the same time this is the busiest period with crowds or visitors.

The best period to visit Tana Toraja for the scenic treks are the high season and shoulder months (April - October), although the best picture conditions (green rice fields) are in the rain season period October-March.

How much should I tip?

Tipping is common in Indonesia, and the staff will be extremely happy and flattered if you decide to do so, but it is entirely voluntary and not expected.

There is no rule for how much to tip, as it really depends on how satisfied you are with the service and on your budget. Some clients really insist to get an indication, so we will give the rule of thumb that for every day you may consider tipping your guide 150.000 IDR and 50.000 IDR to your driver .

Please consider this as very indicative. If you are on a low budget just consider less, and if you are on a high budget you could consider more. But any amount is really appreciated!

Can I visit a funeral ceremony with your Tana Toraja tours?

If there will be a funeral ceremony during your visit then we will attend the funeral if you wish, and we adjust the tour itinerary accordingly.

But we can usually not guarantee that there will be funeral ceremonies during your visit because the funeral schedules are usually not fixed and sometimes only announced a few days in advance.

But if you stay in Tana Toraja for a few days in July and August it is likely that there will be a funeral ceremony during your stay.

How difficult are the treks?

The default treks with the 4D3N Tana Toraja Tour and 5D4N Sulawesi Tour are short (±1 hour) and very accessible even for small children.

The default treks with the 5D4N Tana Toraja Tour and 6D5N Sulawesi Tour are also easy but there is an all-day trek that could be tiring for the inexperienced hiker. In that case, we also offer an alternative hike that only takes ±3 hour and includes the highlights.

However, nothing is set in stone, so just contact us about your preferences and we'll tailor the itineraries to your interests. This can even be done on the spot!

What accommodation is included in Rantepao?

The included accommodation in Rantepao is an ensuite room at a local guesthouse with great value for money: Rosalina Guesthouse or alike.

What are other recommended accommodations in Rantepao?

Rantepao does not have any luxury accommodations, and in our opinion the more expensive accommodations are not good value for money. However, in case you prefer to stay at the more expensive accommodations instead of the included guesthouse, you can book your own accommodation and get a discount for your Toraja tour. Popular hotels in the top category are:

  • Toraja Misilliana Hotel
  • Tongkonan Layuk Lion

Please notice that you can book your own accommodation only for the part of the tour with overnights in Rantepao as accommodations in the mountain villages with the Toraja Tour & Village Stay tours cannot be booked by visitors themselves. Just let us know if you wish to visit other villages than in our default program and we change the itinerary and accommodation accordingly.

What accommodation is included in the remote villages?

You will sleep like a local: in basic but clean rooms. Notice that conform local customs, the shower is usually outside of the house. While we cannot guarantee it, we always try to arrange a traditional Tongkonan.

Why are Buffalo's sacrificed with the Toraja Funeral Ceremonies?

According to Torajan beliefs, the ghost of the deceased lingers around his village until the funeral ceremony is completed, after which it will start the journey to the Land of Souls ("Puya").

Buffaloes are considered to be a transportation vehicle for this journey, and during the funeral ceremony as many buffaloes are sacrificed as possible so that the journey to the land of souls can be done as fast as possible.

What should I bring to my Tana Toraja Tour?

The general pack list:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Insect repellent (DEET 40%)
  • Small backpack for the day trips

Pack also the following for the Tana Toraja treks:

  • Pocket light
  • Mobile charger for your electronic devices (or a spare battery)

When you visit a ceremony, you should bring a small ceremony gift (such as sugar, chocolate, cigarettes), or just ask your guide to make a stop at a local store on the way to the ceremony.

A Final Note

The tourism in Sulawesi has fallen dramatically since several years. In 2018 a tsunami killed ca 2000 people and left ca 500.000 children without access to basic nutrition, health and education.

Then Covid-19 obliterated the little tourism left. When it appeared things couldn’t get worse, ca 15.000 people fled their homes in 2021, following a deadly earthquake in the Majene regency.

So when you visit Sulawesi, you would not only make lifetime memories on this beautiful island… You’d support the local economy and make a difference to the lives of those that helped make those memories.

Popular hotels in the top category are: ■ Toraja Misilliana Hotel ■ Tongkonan Layuk Lion .

How to Prepare for your Tana Toraja Tour?

Go through our frequently asked questions below. If you cannot find your question, don’t hesitate to drop us an email .

Can I do the Tana Toraja Tour excluding the Makassar transfer?

Yes. Feel free to get to Tana Toraja on your own. We will reduce the tour price (3 million IDR for a return private transfer Makassar - Rantepao) and tour itinerary accordingly.

Should I tip my Toraja Tour Guide?

There is no rule for how much to tip, as it really depends on how satisfied you are with the service and on your budget. Some clients really insist to get an indication, so we will give the rule of thumb that for every day you may consider tipping your guide 100.000 IDR and 50.000 IDR to your driver .

The default treks with the 4D3N Tana Toraja Tour and 5D4N Sulawesi Tour are short (±1 hour) and very accessible even for less fit people.

However, nothing is set in stone, so just contact us about your preferences and we'll tailor the itineraries to your interests.

How is the included accommodation in Rantepao?

How is the included accommodation in the remote villages.

You will sleep like the local villagers, in basic but clean rooms. Notice that conform local customs, the shower is usually outside of the house. While we cannot guarantee it, we always try to arrange a traditional Tongkonan.

Can I choose my own accommodation in Rantepao?

Please notice that you can book your own accommodation only for the part of the tour with overnights in Rantepao as accommodations in the mountain villages with the Toraja Tour & Village Stay tours cannot be booked by visitors themselves. Just let us know if you wish to visit other villages than in our default program and we change the itinerary and accommodation accordingly.

Why are Buffalo's sacrificed with the Toraja Funeral Ceremonies?

3d2n jungle trekking.

This tour is for the true adventurer! The traveler that seeks to discover unexplored, and yet magnificent regions! The traveler that enjoys the outdoors, is curious about survival techniques, and is thrilled by the vibe of a remote, virgin, evergreen forest.

travel makassar ampana

The trekking will be in the remote, evergreen rainforest in the Mambasa region, a few hours drive from Palopo airport and Rantepao village. Because Torajans are supersticious and fear the jungle, most Torajan guides have never been to the jungle and jungle trekking tours are not commonly offered around Toraja, despite the incredibly attractive circumstances.

travel makassar ampana

Our aim is to show the rich diversity of flora and fauna in this beautiful, virgin jungle. The jungle provides many resources that people ignore nowadays such as traditional medicinal herbs. Animals living here include wild pigs, monkeys and various bird species including the Sulawesi hornbill.

Trekking, Hunting & Building Shelters

As we trek through the jungle, we will teach you about the medicinal plants, and show the wildlife. We will sleep in a tent or in hammocks and prepare simple meals in cooking equipment we bring with ourselves. Porters will carry your heavy bags and provide general support.

travel makassar ampana

For the true adventurours we also offer the survival option where we will teach you how to hunt in the jungle, make a shelter from natural resources and eat what the jungle provides us (this includes smoking ant nests, drinking from plant roots, eating jungle fruit, frying frogs, etc).

travel makassar ampana

We provide jungle trekkings from 2 up to 7 days. We recommend to do at least a 3 day tour to experience one full day in the jungle. You should be in good shape, comfortable with outdoor trekkings and very basic facilities.

This jungle is also home to the indigenous Wana tribe. This Nomadic tribe lives in the jungle in isolation from the civilized world, but they do warmly welcome the few visitors that show interest to visit them.

travel makassar ampana

In case you do a jungle trekking of at least 5 or 6 days, we may be able to find them and pay them a visit. This is especially a unique opportunity for photographers and documentary makers, as there is very little public information available about this jungle tribe!

Instant Booking Form

Look up the rates and availabilities of any Toraja tour, and instantly confirm your booking request. The required deposit for the confirmation process is in EUR to keep costs low. The outstanding balance can be paid upon arrival in IDR.

Sulawesi Travel Guide – Attractions + Itinerary + Things to do

Posted on June 22, 2022 | Julie J. |

Last Updated on November 5, 2022

Sulawesi truly has a lot to offer, not many tourists make it there, and they are missing some great adventures. If you love tribal culture and nature , then Sulawesi is the right place for you. It also offers some of the best diving experiences and wildlife encounters in Southeast Asia.

From exploring national parks to learning more about Sulawesi death rituals, discover the island’s highlights and best places to visit.

In this article, I will share with you the best things to do in Sulawesi, the must-see tourist attractions in Sulawesi, as well as the off-the-beaten-track adventures , and a sample itinerary to travel to Sulawesi.

When planning to travel to Sulawesi, remember that the island is huge, the bus ride from Manado to Makassar takes 50 hours, and the tourist attractions don’t always have an airport nearby. If you want to visit all the places listed below, you’ll need at least a month. You’ll lose a day in transportation between each spot.

Travel tip  – Before any international trip, make sure to   get travel insurance  and check  visa requirements.

Sulawesi attractions and highlights map:

Best things to do in Sulawesi and top places to visit (From South to North)

1 – diving in bira beach.

Bira beach, Sulawesi, Indonesia

What to do in Bira Beach

Bira Beach has some impressive diving to be done, its prolific marine life makes it the perfect spot, with some of the best diving spots in the world. It’s also a good place for beginners as most of the coral reefs are not really deep and the current is usually weak. The visibility is exceptional.

There are also some beautiful snorkeling spots and the beach is a nice place to relax, really clean with white sand and translucent water.

If you are in the area, you should also check out nearby Tanah Beru, famous for being the main city producing bugis boats in Indonesia.

You might also want to check Kajang, a traditional village where people reject any kind of technology and only wear black. You don’t need to have a guide to go there but dress in black, remove your shoes at the village’s entrance and don’t enter it with your motorbike.

Where to stay in Bira Beach

If you’re going to dive, you can check out Scuba Republic , you can go diving with them, and they offer basic dorms and private bungalows. If you want something a bit more comfortable, you can stay at Nini’s Beach Bungalows for around 40 US a night, right on the beach.

If you want to treat yourself to a luxurious hotel, check out Amatoa Resort , offering beachfront bungalows, an infinity pool, and a great restaurant.

How to get to Bira Beach

There are a couple of buses leaving from the bus station in Makassar but there’s no fixed schedule – there, you’ll also find shared taxis. Make sure to go early in the morning to be sure to catch something. It might be easier to hire a private transfer. The trip takes around 6 hours

2 – Take a boat ride on Danau Tempe

Floating house, danau tempe, sulawesi, indonesia, flood, floating village

What to do in Danau Tempe

Visiting Lake Tempe is a unique experience, many people have built floating houses and just live on the lake. Meeting them and witnessing this different type of lifestyle is really exceptional. Most of them are fishermen and live on the lake during high tide season, moving to the land when the tide is low.

The starting point to visit Danau Tempe is Sengkang, you can arrange for a boat ride with your accommodation. Consider hiring a guide if you want to communicate with the villagers as the boat driver won’t speak English.

The lake is also good for nature lovers as many bird species are living there.

Where to stay near Danau Tempe

You won’t find many accommodations online for Sengkang. I stayed at Amira Guesthouse , it’s cheap, comfortable clean and the owner is super friendly. He helped me arrange the boat ride. They also have a restaurant serving delicious local food.

How to get to Sengkang

From Makassar, there are cars leaving in the morning from the bus station.

From Bira, take the first car to Bulukumba, then one to Sanjai, and one to Sengkang.

3 – Discover Sulawesi death rituals in Tana Toraja

Tanah Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia

What to do in Tana Toraja

Visiting Tana Toraja is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is one of the best things to do in Sulawesi. You cannot miss it. If you love tribal cultures, this place is for you.

Located in Central Sulawesi, Tanah Toraja is famous for its peculiar death ritual . Many ceremonies have to take place before the dead can be buried, and some families have to wait for months before the funeral, either because they don’t have enough money or either because all the relatives cannot come back for the ceremonies.

One of the most impressive rituals is the buffaloes’ sacrifices , the more the better, and after you’re invited to eat the barbecued buffaloes with the family.

The architecture of the houses is also worth a look, everything there is truly authentic and has not changed a bit despite tourism increasing. What is also impressive is the way they incorporated catholic religion into their traditions.

You can rent a scooter for the day and drive around the villages and rice fields. You can also hire a guide , which I recommend, to learn more about the culture and know where to go.

Where to stay in Tana Toraja:

Tana Toraja is a huge region, the main city being Rantepao. That’s where you’ll find most of the accommodation options, and it’s the easiest location to explore the region from. You can also, once there, organize a homestay in one of the more remote villages, just ask at the tour agencies or at your hotel.

In Rantepao, there are plenty of cheap options starting at 10-15US for a private room with a private bath (check out Rosalina Homestay ).

There are also a few pricier options but there’s not much quality or service difference between them and the cheaper options.

If you’re looking for something spectacular, check out Toraja Misiliana Hotel . They have turned traditional houses into hotel rooms and the result is quite unique.

4 – Visit the 700 years old Megaliths in Lore Lindu National Park

Megalith, Bomba, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Tentena

What to do in Lore Lindu National Park

Lost in the mountains are about 400 megaliths representing humans and animals, most of them carved 700 years ago, some dating back as far as 3000 BC. No one knows exactly how the statues got there, especially as the stone used to make them is not found anywhere near the site.

You’ll need to hire a guide to find them. It’s also a good opportunity to do a homestay in one of the traditional villages around the park.

The park is also famous for trekking and its prolific wildlife. You can find there the shyest and smallest primate in the world: the tarsier.

Related article –  Mysterious megaliths in Lore Lindu National Park

Where to stay near Lore Lindu National Park

You can take a day trip from Tentena. There you can stay at Ue Datu Cottages , surrounded by nature. You can also just show up and ask around for hotels, most of them are not online.

If you want to spend more time there, you can either stay in Bomba, where most of the megaliths are, or Wuasa, where you can trek and go bird-watching.

Coming from Tana Toraja, Bomba is easier to reach, coming from Palu or the Togian Islands, Wuasa is easier to reach. In both villages, your only option is a homestay. If you don’t go through a tour operator, you’ll have to just show up and ask around.

5 – Meet with the Wana tribe in Morowali Nature Reserve

Morowali Nature Reserve, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Meeting the Wana tribe truly is a unique experience. To reach the Wana village, you’ll have to trek through the reserve for about a day. You will spend one or two nights there and then trek back. Not many people make the trip, and you’ll be welcomed with open arms. You’ll need to hire a guide and bring some presents for the tribe. Contact a tour agency in advance to book the trip, they’ll usually include an airport pickup in Palu.

The area is really beautiful and scenic. Meeting this remote tribe, almost totally cut from the outside world, is just amazing.

If you are in the area, you might want to stop by Tomori Bay . Located on the east coast of Central Sulawesi, the bay is famous for its rock formations and impressive rock paintings.

6 – Enjoy a relaxing time at Tanjung Karang Beach

Tanjung Karang, Palu, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Pantai Tanjung Karang, in Donggala, near Palu, is really beautiful, the sand is thin and white, and the water is transparent. Boarded by coconut trees, it’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

This beach is really unknown to most tourists, so it’s really quiet, maybe too quiet. If you are solo traveling, it might be best to just take a day trip from Palu.

Same if you want to stay there, stay at Prince John Dive Resort , it’s the most expensive one but it’s the only one truly operating, the other ones look like they are abandoned. The day I went there, the hotels were all deserted, I couldn’t even find someone from the staff. The only one where I found the caretaker, the place looked really ran out, I didn’t see myself spending the night there.

7 – Swim with jellyfish in the Togian Islands

Kadidiri, Sulawesi tourist attractions, Indonesia

What to do in the Togian Islands

The Togian Islands are one of Central Sulawesi’s most famous tourist attractions and probably the most touristy. As Sulawesi doesn’t get many tourists, the island is far from crowded. It’s quite hard to get there, but it’s totally worth it.

The easiest way to get there is simply to contact your hotel and ask, because the boat route and schedule is always changing.

The islands are perfect for snorkeling and diving , although the coral reef has been badly damaged by fishing activities. You’ll most likely see turtles, rays, and sharks (not the dangerous type).

What’s great about the Togean Islands is the laid-back lifestyle that comes with it. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy unspoiled beaches . You’ll also meet many sea gypsies moving between the islands.

One of the most famous features of the Togian Islands is the jellyfish lake. You can actually swim in it and be surrounded by jellyfish. The best part is that they are not poisonous. There are only two lakes like this in the world, the second one is also in Indonesia, in Kalimantan .

Where to stay in the Togian Islands

Surprisingly, you won’t find many hotels online. You can just get there and look around for a hotel, as there are plenty of those. The islands’ main city is Wakai, where you’ll find most of the accommodations. It’s also a central location to explore the rest of the islands.

8 – Meet Sulawesi’s endemic wildlife in Tangkoko Nature Reserve

Tarsier

Tangkoko National Park is the best place to see wildlife in North Sulawesi. You’ll mostly be likely to see Tarsiers, Hornbills, Crested Macaque, and Bear Cuscus.

You can easily organize a day trip from Manado to visit the park . Manado and its surroundings have a lot to offer: beautiful beaches, and impressive national parks. It’s the best place if you love nature and adventures.

Recommend guided tours: Sulawesi Tangkoko National Park Private Tour and Tangkoko Overnight (2D1N)

9 – Discover Sulawesi’s diverse marine life in Bunaken Marine Park

Sea turtle, Sulawesi tourist attractions, Indonesia

What to do in Bunaken Island

Bunaken Marine Park is absolutely fabulous for diving and snorkeling in North Sulawesi. The water is crystal clear, and the reefs are amazing. The island, close to Manado, is easily accessible, and most accommodations are cheap. It’s the perfect place to chill for a couple of days, enjoy the beach and do some snorkeling.

You can also just take a day trip from Manado if you’re short on time.

Where to stay in Bunaken

There are plenty of accommodations for all budgets to choose from in Bunaken. Better to book in advance as the island can get crowded during weekends and public holidays.

Other things to do in Northern Sulawesi (Day trips from Manado):

  • Hikking Mount Mahawu & Lokon
  • Mount Klabat Sunrise Hike
  • Trekking at Soputan Volcano Mountain
  • Rafting on Nimanga River
  • Snorkeling near Lihaga Island
  • Woloan Village, Tondano Lake & Minahasa Highland
  • Nani Wartabone National Park Tour

10 – Explore remote Sangir and Talaud Islands

talaud island, Sulawesi tourist attractions, Indonesia

Exploring Sangir and Talaud Island in North Sulawesi is the ultimate adventure. They rarely see any foreigners but have so much to offer, especially in terms of nature. The fauna and flora there are really diverse and so well preserved. The cluster of islands is also famous for its many volcanoes.

Get ready to explore the lush jungles and meet with remote tribes.

From Manado Harbour, you’ll find boats heading daily to Sangir. Avoid going during monsoon as the sea becomes dangerous. On Sangir (sometimes spelled Sangihe), the main town is Tahuna, where the boat arrives and where you’ll find most of the hotels.

Sulawesi Foods to Try Out

Pisang Ijo

Pisang Ijo, or Green Banana, is one of my favorite Indonesian treats. Originally from Sulawesi, you can find them in most places in Indonesia, but there are not as good as the one you’ll eat in Sulawesi.

Pisang Ijo is a boiled banana rolled in a thin green pancake (the dye is natural) and served with a type of coconut pudding and pink syrup. It is super tasty, always add some ice cubes to the porridge for the perfect taste.

Mi Titi is one of my favorite Indonesian dishes. Originally from Sulawesi, with luck, you can find them in other parts of the country. Mie Titi are crunchy noodles served in a gooey sauce, it’s delicious.

Coto Makassar

Coto Makassar is a type of beef stew. The stew is delicious, but what they don’t tell you is that there’s no meat, only organs, and every type of organs imaginable, intestines and lungs included. I was told they make a version with only meat but I never found it.

Sulawesi Itinerary

Sulawesi is huge and the roads terrible, I once spend 24 hours on a bus instead of 8 because the road had collapsed.

When planning your itinerary count at least a day to get to one place to another.

Spending less than 2 weeks in Sulawesi, in my opinion, is not worth it, the distances between attractions are too great.

If you have the budget, you can go through a tour operator, which will save you time, especially if you want to explore the more remote places such as Lore Lindu or Morowali.

Sulawesi highlights – 3-week itinerary

This itinerary starts in Makassar and finishes in Manado. You can also do it the other way around. Both cities have an airport well connected to the rest of Indonesia.

  • Makassar – 1 night – Arrive at Makassar airport, spend the night there and head to Bira in the morning, go as early as you can if you travel by public transportation.
  • Bira – 3 nights – You’ll have two full days, you can do one at the beach or diving, and the other one, exploring the surroundings.
  • Danau Tempe – 1 night – You’ll arrive in the evening, you can go early morning to the lake then directly head to Rantepao.
  • Rantepao (Tana Toraja) – 4 nights – You’ll have 3 full days to explore all of Tana Toraja. On the last day, head early morning to Tentena.
  • Tentena – 2 nights – Spend the night in Tentena, and the next day take a day trip to Lore Lindu. The next day head to Ampana.
  • Ampana – 1 night – You might be able to catch a boat to the Togian Island on the same day but it’s safer to plan to spend a night in Ampana just in case.
  • Togian Islands – 5 nights – Here, relax, relax and relax. You could spend less time there but the islands are so hard to reach and so beautiful, you’ll want to stay longer.
  • Manado – 4 nights – In Manado, you can spend a day exploring the city, the next, go to Bunaken National Park and the last head to Tangkoko Nature Reserve.

Sulawesi 2-week itinerary

If you can’t spare 3 weeks, you can skip Bira and Danau Tempe, and fly directly to Rantepao from Makassar, and spend less time in each place.
