How do you unlock a TSA lock if you forgot the combination?

Securing a lock to luggage

Using a TSA lock on your suitcase is a great way to keep your belongings safe while making it easy for TSA officers to do their job. But, because the lock requires a combination, it gives you something else to remember in addition to all those passwords floating around in your head. And that means there’s a chance you’re eventually going to forget it.

Don’t worry. We’ll show you how to open a TSA lock when you forget the combination, so you can get on with your travels even when the code escapes you.

What is a TSA lock, anyway?

A TSA lock is one to which only TSA officials have a key. You set the combination yourself and, if a TSA agent has to look inside your bag because they see something suspicious on the scanner, it can be easily opened with their master key. If you use a lock that’s not TSA-approved, the agent’s only way to get in is to cut the lock or the bag itself, possibly damaging it.

Many suitcases already come with built-in TSA locks but, if they don’t, you can buy one separately.

How to open your TSA lock and reset the combination

If you forget your TSA lock combination, there are a few methods you’ll want to try to open it. And, yes, you do have to open it before you can reset the combination. Because there’s no standard solution for this, you’ll have to experiment to see which one works for you.

Since different locks require different processes, the most effective first step may be to call the luggage or lock company itself (or check their website) for brand-specific instructions.

Travel Sentry, whose red diamond logo certifies that a lock is TSA-approved, recommends trying every possible combination from 000-999, starting with 000, 001, 002 … and working your work to 999. Although, admittedly, this seems time-consuming, they assure it should take 30 minutes or less, especially if the first number is a 0, 1 or 2 (something to keep in mind when you’re coming up with a new combination).

If the idea of that is overwhelming and your luggage features a built-in TSA lock, you can try this:

  • Use a safety pin to locate the metal or plastic cylinder on the right side of the first dial. The flashlight and camera on your phone can help you zoom in on it.
  • Turn the dial and, with the safety pin, look for an indentation or gap in the cylinder. Leave the dial at that number.
  • Repeat the process for the other two dials.
  • If the lock doesn’t open, turn all three dials down one number.
  • If the lock still doesn’t open, keep turning all three dials down one number at a time until it does.

Here’s another method that has worked for travelers with TSA padlocks:

  • Put pressure on the locking mechanism by pushing the button or pulling on the lock.
  • Turn the first dial slowly until you hear an audible click, which signals it’s the correct number.
  • Repeat the process for the next two dials.
  • When all three numbers are correct, the lock will open.

If you forget your combination while the lock is still open, all you have to do is reset it with a new combination. Again, you may be best off checking the brand’s website for individual instructions, but you can reset most freestanding locks this way:

  • Set each dial to 0 so it reads 000.
  • Rotate the shackle 90 degrees from the lock position.
  • Press the shackle and keep it down while you set your three-digit combination.
  • Release the shackle and turn it back to the lock position.

To reset most built-in locks, simply slide the lock button in the direction of the arrow, set your new code and release the button.

Is it really worth using a TSA lock?

Using a TSA lock is totally a matter of personal preference. Many travelers feel safer knowing that their luggage is secure while others don’t want to have to worry about remembering one more thing. The fact is, of the 1.4 million checked bags the TSA screens daily, only about 5% of checked bags are actually opened by agents for further inspection.

Our advice? Use a TSA lock and store your combination safely in your phone for all-around peace of mind.

Guide to TSA Luggage Locks

Close up of Platinum Elite Hardside TSA lock

When you travel, your luggage should be securely protected with TSA-approved luggage locks. TSA-approved locks all fit a universal master key only accessible by TSA agents that is used to inspect luggage on an as-needed basis. As only TSA agents have access to the master key, your luggage remains securely locked when handled by anyone else.

Luggage locks that are TSA-approved protect your luggage as well as its contents. TSA agents will break locks not approved by the TSA off bags to inspect luggage contents, leaving the bag’s contents vulnerable to theft and possibly damaging your bags.

We recommend  using TSA luggage locks on your suitcase . At the same time, we understand some confusion exists concerning what type of TSA locks to use, how to set combinations on TSA-approved locks, and how to reset a luggage lock if you forget your combination. We’ll answer your concerns here.

Where Can I Buy TSA-Approved Locks?

You can buy TSA-approved luggage locks at airport kiosks, local luggage stores, and online outlets. A TSA-approved lock’s packaging will clearly state the lock is approved by the TSA. Avoid luggage locks that do not make this claim.

If you want to know if your lock was opened by a TSA master key, purchase a lock with a red/green indicator. The indicator is set to green and only switches to red if the bag was opened for inspection. You can reset the indicator for future trips using a paperclip, pen, or other slender-pointed object.

Which Types of Luggage Locks are TSA approved?

You can choose several types of TSA-approved locks to fit your personal needs. Possibilities include:

  • Key Locks are traditional padlocks that use a physical key to open and close the lock. One of the most common types of TSA-approved travel locks, key locks are affordable ways to keep your suitcase contents safe. One word of caution: The key for a travel key lock is small and easy to lose. Keep your key in a secure place, or you could find yourself locked out of your luggage, in which case you’ll need a small hacksaw to cut through the lock.
  • Combination Locks are a good choice for anyone who doesn't want to keep track of small travel lock keys. These locks use a three or four-digit combination. The lock has a keyhole for the TSA master key, and as long as you don't forget your combination, you won't be locked out of your suitcase.
  • Cable Locks are combination locks that use a semi-flexible cable to lock instead of the traditional metal clip. The cable's flexibility is a plus, as the lock can be used for various applications, including locking strongboxes. Some cable locks come with retractable cables that store in the lock.
  • Key Card Locks use a key card similar to those used to open hotel rooms. Like combination locks, TSA-approved key card locks have a keyhole for the TSA master key. The key card is credit card size, and fits easily into a purse or wallet.

Can I Lock My Luggage on a Flight?

Travelers sometimes express concern about whether they are allowed to lock their luggage on flights. The answer is yes, you can and should secure your bags on all flights. The rules for domestic and international flights, however, are slightly different.

Can I Lock My Luggage on a Domestic Flight?

You can lock your luggage on a domestic flight. Whether or not you choose to do so depends on what you’re transporting. A lock provides extra security and peace of mind if you’re checking in a suitcase with expensive clothing or valuable items inside. A lock may not be needed if you’re traveling with a carry-on bag filled with inexpensive items.

Should I Lock My Luggage for International Flights?

Luggage locks are necessary when traveling internationally to secure your belongings and minimize theft risk. Some areas of the world have problems with luggage theft in and around airports. A securely locked suitcase is less likely to be stolen than one that can be quickly opened, riffled through for valuables, and discarded.

You can use TSA-approved luggage locks internationally, but not all international airport security have access to the TSA master key. In countries where the key is unavailable, security agents may break TSA locks to inspect bags, which could damage your bag and leave you in need of  luggage repair . Fortunately, many popular international destinations now use the TSA master key, at least at major airports. Check the following chart to see if your destination uses the TSA master key:

How Can I Reset My Luggage Lock?

Resetting a combination luggage lock is easy if you’re entering a new combination for the first time or changing a known combination. The process is more complicated if you have forgotten the combination. Here’s how to handle each of those situations.

How to Create a New Password With A New TSA Lock

Traveling using a TSA-approved lock’s factory setting is risky — it’s like using ‘password’ as an online password, so you should enter a new combination before traveling. You may also want to change your combination to keep someone who knows your password out of your bag.

Changing an Integrated TSA Lock Password

Changing the password for suitcases with integrated TSA locks requires a slightly different approach:

  • Set the lock dial to 0000 or your current password.
  • Slide the release button towards the dials to confirm the lock will release.
  • Insert a pointy object, such as a glass repair screwdriver, into the reset button. You do not need to hold the button down.
  • Set the deal to the new password.
  • Poised the release button towards the dials to confirm the new code. The reset button will click and release if you set the code correctly.
  • Test the new password by turning the dials to a number other than the new code, then push the release button. The dials should not release.
  • Insert the bag's zipper tabs into their slots while the preferred number is displayed. The tabs should release.

Once you get the lock open, remember the combination or add it to your phone. A common traveler's trick is to add a fake name and phone number to their phone’s contact list, using the combination for the last number of the phone number.

TSA-approved luggage locks provide the most protection when paired with high-quality, well-made luggage. Check out  luggage sets from Travelpro to find the bags and suitcases airline professionals use.

How To Open A Luggage Lock: All The Different Tricks

Forgot the combination to your suitcase lock? You’re definitely in the right place then! This detailed guide will tell you all the tips and tricks you can use to open your luggage lock even if you don’t know the combination.

Luggage locks are easier to open than you think. There are several different ways to break them open, from hacking to just using force, and there’s even a foolproof trick that opens every single lock. Read on to learn all the different ways to open a luggage lock!

  • Has the combination changed
  • Identify the lock type
  • Try the factory setting
  • Try every combination
  • Pick or hack the lock
  • Contact customer service
  • Send in for repair

Identify The Type Of Lock

First things first – you need to know exactly what type of lock you are dealing with. Is the lock built into the suitcase, or are we talking about a padlock? Is it TSA-friendly or not?

Some locks are easier to open than others, so identifying the lock is the first step toward getting your suitcase open. TSA-compliant locks are a bit trickier to break into, but most of them can be opened with TSA master keys. Some locks are pickable, others can be forced open, and there’s even a foolproof method that will open any combination lock out there.

Once you’ve identified exactly what type of your lock you’re dealing with, feel free to try out any of the methods below and see what works best for you!

Did The Combination Change?

If you’re 100% sure that you’re using the right combination for the lock but it won’t open, it’s possible that one of the numbers changes. This can happen sometimes due to vibrations on the airplane and in most cases just one number changes. So, try using your combination but change one number each time.

There are 27 possible combinations, and it only takes a couple of seconds to input each one, so this shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. If you tried all the possible combinations and the lock still won’t open, it’s time to turn to

Try The Factory Setting

Sometimes the simplest solution is the correct one. Before you try any other tip from this guide, just put in the factory combination. It’s usually 000 or 999, so just try to open your luggage with those two combinations. It will only take a few seconds, and if you manage to open your suitcase you’ve saved yourself a lot of time and effort!

The Foolproof Method: Try Every Possible Combination

If you really want to know how to unlock a 3-digit combination lock suitcase, and you have some time on your hands, then this is the method for you.

Try every possible combination for the lock and you’re going to get it right eventually. I know it sounds tedious and time-consuming, but the maker of the locks (Travel Sentry) swears that it only takes about 30 minutes to get to 999. If you know one of the numbers or if the combination starts with 0,1, or 2, it will take significantly less than half an hour to guess the combination.

Start with 001, 002, 003, and then continue until you make it all the way to 999. One of the thousand different combinations has to be correct, so out of all the tips and tricks in this guide, this is the only thing that’s guaranteed to open the lock.

If you start guessing right now, your luggage will be open within the next half hour. But if it’s just too tedious for you, feel free to try out some other methods first. Maybe one of the quicker solutions will work better for you!

TSA locks are numbered from 001 to 007, and you can actually buy them with corresponding keys. The number of your lock should be written right next to the combination – if it’s a 002 lock, buy an 002 key.

These keys can’t open every single type of lock they’re meant for – what would be the purpose of locks if they could? But they can open most locks, so it’s certainly worth a try if you’re looking for an easy solution.

One person even printed a set of TSA master keys and it’s crazy to think they could open up any suitcase they want with that. It really makes you wonder what’s the purpose of these locks when it’s so easy to open them without the correct combination.

Hack The Lock

Some locks can be hacked and you can always try hacking the lock to get it open. You’ll need to turn the luggage so that you can see the back of the lock and rotate the dials until you can see the small open spaces. You need to align the holes, and then it’s time to try rotating them.

This is the trial and error part. It’s impossible to know exactly how many times you need to rotate the dials, but here’s the thing – it’s crucial that you rotate all the dials the same number of times. So, try rotating them all once, twice, three times, etc. until you can open the lock.

If you tried every single position and you still can’t open the lock, it’s time to try something else. The good news is there are a lot more tricks you can try, so don’t give up just yet!

Hack TSA Locks

There’s another way you can try and hack a combination lock. This is supposed to be just for TSA locks, but it can’t hurt to try even if your luggage has a simple combination lock.

Depending on the type of lock, you’ll want to either push or pull the button like you’re unlocking it. This puts pressure on the mechanism, which is exactly what you want to hack the lock. When the mechanism is under pressure, there’s an audible click whenever you turn the dial to the correct number.

Keep the button pushed/pulled and rotate the first dial until you hear the click. Leave it in the place that clicked and repeat the process on the remaining two dials. When all three dials click into place, the lock should open immediately.

Contact Customer Service

Some luggage manufacturers make it virtually impossible to open the TSA-compliant locks without their instructions. This is often the case with brands that make more expensive luggage. It makes sense that Samsonite would make it as difficult as possible to open up their luggage lock, and it makes you a bit more at ease. Until you get their instructions, that is.

Contact customer service of your luggage brand to get instructions on how to reset the lock.

Only Open Locks

It’s worth noting that you can only reset locks that are unlocked at the moment you’re trying to reset them. Follow the instructions until you’ve managed to reset the lock and maybe email yourself the new combination so you don’t forget it again.

I also want to point out that this will only work with established brands. If you have a cheap suitcase made by a brand you’ve never heard of, the chances of getting in contact with a customer service rep are lower than the chances of the wind rotating the dials into their correct positions.

How To Reset A TSA Combination Padlock

If you forgot the combination to the lock but it’s unlocked, you can easily reset the combination. However, keep in mind that this method works mostly on TSA padlocks, and not on built-in luggage locks.

First, set the dial to 000. Then, turn the shackle to sit at a 90-degree angle from the lock position and push it down. Keep the shackle pushed down while you set a new code for the lock. When you’ve set the desired code, pull up the shackle and turn it to the lock position. If it worked, you should be able to unlock the padlock with the new combination you just set.

Pick The Lock

It’s surprisingly easy to buy a lock picking kit online, and you can find tutorials on lock picking all over YouTube. If you can’t get any other method to work and you’re still not ready to try and input 999 different combinations into a lock, you could always try to pick the lock.

If you ever played a detective video game, you probably have some idea how this works – you need to put pressure on the mechanism of a lock. A lock picking kit will give you all the different keys to try this with, and then it’s just trial and error until you get it right.

You can also try using items you have around your home like sim card ejectors or hairpins. You’ll need two items at the very least – one to push in the locking mechanism, and another one to turn the lock once the mechanism is under pressure.

This can take a while, and it can definitely take you more than 30 minutes to pick the lock. There’s also no guarantee that you’ll be able to do it, and that’s a good thing. Not all locks are pickable, and that’s the whole reason why we put them on our luggage.

Send The Luggage To A Repair Center

If your luggage is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, it should be possible to get the manufacturer to open the lock for you. You need to ship the luggage to a repair center and then wait for an eternity to get it back, so I don’t really recommend this method.

It certainly takes longer than the 30 minutes necessary to try out all the different combinations, and it could cost you some serious money to ship the luggage back and forth.

But it’s something you can do in case you were wondering, and I like to cover all bases with these guides.

Bypass The Lock

If you need to get inside your suitcase immediately and you don’t have the half-hour necessary to open the lock, you can try to bypass it. With standard zippered suitcases, all you need is a ballpoint pen. Insert the tip of the pen between the zipper teeth and press down. Pull the pen down the zipper until you’ve managed to separate all the teeth.

The suitcase will still be locked, but with an open zipper, you can access most of the items inside. I was horrified when I figured out I could do this with my luggage – it really made me stop and think what the whole point of locks was. Also, it was the moment I decided to look into zipperless luggage for overseas travel since you can’t break open a zipperless suitcase with a simple pen.

There’s another thing you can try, but it’s going to make the suitcase unusable until you send it for repairs. To open a locked suitcase, you just need to disconnect the zipper pullers from the sliders. And this is easier than you think – just get a screwdriver or a pair of pliers and get savage with the pullers.

Rip the pullers away from the sliders and you should be able to open and close your suitcase. The pullers will still stay in the lock, but the sliders can move up and down freely. And don’t stress too much about destroying your suitcase – in most cases, it’s super easy and affordable to replace a broken zipper .

You can also pry open a zipperless suitcase – you just need to break the latch. This will take a lot of force, and in some cases, you won’t be able to do it if the metal is too strong. But I’ve had luggage where the latches broke on their own, so I assume if you apply just the right amount of force you’ll get it to open in no time.

I don’t recommend trying this method on a zipperless suitcase if you aren’t ready to part ways with it. Breaking the latches will render the suitcase useless because there’s no way to close the packing compartments without them. If you’re still on vacation, or if you paid a lot of money for your zipperless luggage, please take my advice and just spend thirty minutes trying to guess the lock.

How to Unlock Your Suitcase When You’ve Forgotten the Combination

Picture the scene, you’ve just arrived at your hotel in an unfamiliar city after a long flight. You put your suitcase on the bed and slowly turn the numbered wheels of the three-digit combination lock. You press the button to get access to your case but nothing happens. The metal zipper tags remain firmly trapped in the lock’s clasp…

A red hand luggage size American Tourister suitcase with a built in combination lock

Getting locked out of your luggage is something that happens to even the most seasoned travellers at some time or another. Luckily the ubiquitous, TSA approved, 3-digit combination locks used by brands such as Samsonite, Eastpack, Antler and American Tourister are easy to open without damaging either the lock or the case and without any special tools.

By following the steps described below, you will be able to quickly open the lock and re-program the code to a new 3 digit combination which is easier to remember.

A locked red suitcase with a TSA007 combination lock

How to Unlock Your Suitcase When You Forgot the Combination

If you look closely at the lock from above, you will see that to one side of the 3 numbered thumb-wheels there is a small disk (see photos below).

I have found that the best way to see the disks is by using your mobile phone’s camera.

Select the video camera and shine the flash down into the lock then zoom-in to see the disks more clearly.

Starting with the first thumb-wheel of the lock, turn the wheel one click at a time until you see a notch in the disk as shown in the photos.

Once you have lined up the notch of the first wheel you then repeat the process for the second and third digit until the notches of all three wheels are lined up (see the photo of the blue suitcase).

Once all three notches are lined up, turn the suitcase so you can see the numbers.

Note, this is NOT the combination code.

How to unlock a Samsonite or American Tourister suitcase when you have forgotten the code

Write down the numbers on the first line of a blank sheet of paper.

On the next line add 1 to each digit.

Repeat this 8 more times until you have a list of 10 3-digit numbers as shown in the photo below.

Try the codes one at a time until you find the one which opens the suitcase.

Once the case is open you can change the combination for one which is easier to remember.

With practice, the entire procedure takes less than 2 minutes.

Video: How to Quickly Open Your Suitcase Lock When You Forgot the Code

When writing this article I used 2 different suitcases, both of which are fitted with TSA approved Travel Sentry combination locks. The locks are slightly different models but the procedure is identical.

I made the video using the older, blue, suitcase because the notches in the green plastic discs are easier to see than the notches in the black disks of the red suitcase.

The code which opened the red suitcase was 2 clicks away from the position with the disks lined up. The code which opened the blue case was 8 clicks away.

If none of the codes which you have written down work you should check that you lined the notches up correctly. As can be seen in the video, there are normally two positions where the notches are visible. Make sure that all 3 notches are lined up in the same position. You can see that in the video I lined up the disks at the right-hand position.

Close up view of the number wheels of a combination suitcase lock while opening it after forgetting the code

How do Combination Locks Work?

The 3-digit combination locks used on suitcases are designed so that you can change the combination to a unique code which only you know.

To do this, you have to first set the lock to the current combination. You then press a small button (normally using a ballpoint pen) which frees the numbered thumb-wheels from the locking mechanism (currently in the open position).

You can then turn the 3 numbered thumb wheels independently to a new combination before pushing the larger button (the one which is used to open the lock). This re-connects the numbered thumb-wheels to the locking mechanism, activating the new code.

The method described above relies on the fact that part of the locking mechanism itself is visible (the notched disks next to the thumb-wheels). This makes the number shown on the knurled thumb-wheel pretty much irrelevant. Once the disks are aligned you simply need to rotate them around until the lock opens.

What Are TSA Approved Locks?

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is a US federal government agency responsible for the security of travellers that was created in response to the September 11 attacks.

All luggage is scanned before being loaded into aeroplanes and if any prohibited items are detected it will be opened by airport staff and the items removed.

TSA approved locks, identified by the red diamond shaped Travel Sentry logo, can be opened using master keys. The locks are often incorporated into suitcases but TSA approved padlocks are also available.

If your suitcase can’t be opened with a master key then, if they need inspect your luggage, airport staff will open it by force, cutting off padlocks etc.

Using a pencil and paper to crack the code

In theory the keys are only available to airport staff but in reality anyone with a 3D printer can print out their own master keys .

Is it Really worth Locking my TSA approved Luggage Lock?

As we have seen, the 3-digit combination locks fitted to most modern suitcases offer very little or no security. At best they stop your suitcase from opening accidentally during transit, preventing your dirty laundry from spilling out on the baggage carousel.

Some suitcases (including the red suitcase in the photos) have small metal hoops incorporated into the zip-pullers allowing you to use a padlock to lock your suitcase. Although at first glance this may seem to add a second level of security, in reality, it’s a waste of time. As shown in this video , zip closure suitcases can be opened quickly and easily using a ballpoint pen.

Hi. Will this work with the Merax luggage? I can’t see the notches clear like the pictures

I’m not familiar with the Merax brand but this method works for most makes of suitcase with surface-mounted combination locks that trap the zipper pulls. If you can’t see the notches, I recomend you try sliding a thin piece of card or plastic in beside the thumbwheel and then feeling for the notch as you slowly turn the wheel.

How do you reset the code if your suitcase is open but cant remember the password to reclose it?

If you’re suitcase is open, but you’ve forgotten the code, you can find it using exactly the same method as described above but without the stress of needing to open your case.

It worked, line up the notch & add +1 . At 5th number attempt, it unlocked. Very helpful. Thanks so much you’re the genius

Hi Diamond,

Thanks for your comment, I’m glad to hear you were sucessful.

Thanks so much this was so helpful! Almost had to get a full new wardrobe but thanks to you Richard, I don’t! You’re the G.O.A.T!

You’re welcome, and thanks for the feedback.

I have an Adrienne vittadini suitcase and forgot my combination. Is there anyway I can reset it. I lost the manual.

I’m not familiar with Adrienne Vittadini suitcases, but from what I’ve seen on the web, they seem to have the same type of combination lock as the suitcases I used when I wrote this post.

Have you already used the method described above to find the current combination?

Once you’ve found the combination, you can reset it by pushing the small button on the side of the lock using a ball point pen, and then moving the thamb wheels to the new combination.

It worked, line up the notch & add +1 . At 3rd number attempt, it unlocked. Very helpful. Thanks.

You’re welcome Saiful

Blinking amazing worked on last set of numbers thank you so much

You’re welcome Pam!

Worked a charm on TSA 002 Lock Antler Luggage – Thank you

You’re welcome Alan.

My suitcase is of the older hard shell samsonite which has a combination lock that has no little wheel to guide.Any tips on this type.

You mean it’s one of the old plastic Samsonite suitcases where there’s no zip, and the lock is incorporated in a large plastic hasp, and you can see the numbers through small circular holes in the flap, right?

These locks still work the same way; it’s just that you can’t see the notched wheel.

What you can do in this case is try sliding a thin piece of plastic or stiff card in beside the thumb wheel and feeling for the notch in the disk.

Thank you. I tried lots of web sites and no luck. Using the notch line up and +1 number method worked.

Thanks for your comment; I’m glad to hear you were successful.

Thank you so much!

You’re welcome Dd

Welcome ;-)

Thank you so much it worked!

You’re welcome, Mandy!

If you've never set a combination on a luggage lock, it can be a bit confusing. Your best bet is to read the instruction manual that came with it or look up your specific lock on the internet, as each lock can be slightly different. However, most locks work on the same basic principles, generally using a button reset, a lever reset, or a shackle reset.

Changing a Lock with a Button Reset

Step 1 Unlock the lock first.

  • If the luggage is new, the combination probably came with the materials. It's likely just "000."

Step 2 Find the reset button.

Putting a New Code in a Lock with a Lever

Step 1 Find the lever.

Altering the Code on a Shackle Lock

Step 1 Release the shackle.

  • If this movement doesn't reset it, try moving to 180 degrees first, pressing down, and moving back to 90 degrees. You won't know if it reset until you put in a new combination and then try opening it with that combination.

Step 3 Reset the combination number.

If you need to reset a luggage lock that has a button reset, put in the current combination and make sure it’s unlocked. If the luggage is new, the combination is probably 000, but if it’s different, you should be able to find the combination on a tag that came with the luggage. Look for a small reset button on the bottom or the side of the lock, then push the button with a paperclip, pen, or pencil. With the button pressed, turn the lock to the new combination, then release the button. Keep reading to learn how to reset a lock with a lever! Did this summary help you? Yes No

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock

Introduction.

For travel, luggage is an indispensable item. During the trip, we must set a password for the suitcase to ensure the safety of the contents. But the password can be easily forgotten and neglected, so opening the suitcase is a more difficult thing. If you do forget the combination, follow this guide to reset the combination on your suitcase lock.

Step 1 How To Reset a Suitcase Lock

Set the suitcase down with the combination lock facing up.

Turn a flashlight towards the lock, so that you can see the small details.

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock: step 3, image 1 of 3

Rotate the three gears together so that the grooved part of each gear faces the outside.

Correct: Gear faces the outside.

Gear faces the inside.

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock: step 4, image 1 of 1

Remember the number of the three gears when the groove part is on the outside.

As of now the code number of the three gears is 181.

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock: step 5, image 1 of 1

Add 5 to each of the three numbers. For example, my numbers are 181. After adding 5, the code to my lock would be 636.

Turn the numbers on the lock to 636, and then unlock the lock.

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock: step 6, image 1 of 2

Sometimes the difference is not 5 from the grooved spots. In this case, you can try to increase the numbers after adding 5.

For example, if 636 does not work, try to add 6 to the three numbers. Then the code is 747 and attempt to unlock the lock. Continue to add 7, then 8 to try, until it can be opened.

How To Reset a Suitcase Lock: step 7, image 1 of 2

When I added 8 and my number was 969, the lock unlocked. We successfully opened the suitcase!

After reading my guide, you will never encounter the problem that the suitcase cannot be opened without remembering the password. It can be solved anytime, anywhere.

How To Unlock 3 Digit Combination Luggage (Step by Step Guide)

Luggage safety is one of the most essential factors to travel responsibly. But what if you forgot your luggage pin out of nowhere?

Such a terrible nightmare while on vacation or business trip, right? In this article, we will show you a step-by-step instruction on how to unlock your forgotten luggage pin code.

Getting a TSA-Approved Lock

There are many types and ways to secure your luggage before the flight. However, before picking the type of lock, you need to ensure that the lock is TSA-APPROVED.

TSA or Transport Security Administration, is an airline/airport department that conducts strenuous inspections before the flight.

These locks will secure your luggage while still following standard TSA protocols. These locks are easy to use but resetting them can be quite tricky.

Importance of a TSA Lock?

Upon checking in your luggage, it goes through a lot of process before it gets inside the plane. Meaning to say, your luggage goes through a lot of hands. It’s the same process for departures and arrivals.

A TSA approved lock protects your luggage during the process to prevent restricted people from opening it. Only the TSA agents can have luggage access upon physical check of contents.

How Does It Work?

TSA agents possess a master key to inspect and open all TSA locks as necessary. If it happens that you did not use a TSA-approved lock, they will cut the locks open.

TSA conducts a random check of some luggages for different reasons. The major factor is when they suspect if the luggage contains prohibited items such as: drugs, weapons or explosives.

Rest assured that agents will always inform the passenger whenever they opened or inspected your luggage.

If ever this happens, make sure to reset the combination key of your luggage lock. This is just to ensure that no one in the future can access your luggage. You never know the slightest chance for it to happen.

Resetting luggage lock pins will also be discussed towards the end of this article.

Luggage with Combination Lock Feature

Luggages with a combination lock feature have two types: 3-digit or 4-digit code. If you picked the 3-digit code, you’ll need to pick your own pin to set-up the luggage security.

This is a popular choice for most travelers since it’s keyless. Imagine roaming around and about without having to worry if you lose your luggage keys or not.

Since the inevitable can always happen, here’s a travel hack on how to unlock your forgotten luggage pin code.

10 Steps on How To Unlock Your Luggage (if you forgot your pin code)

  • Set your luggage on the table where you can comfortably access the luggage’s lock.
  • Prepare your flashlight to help you better see the lock mechanism behind the numbered wheel for the combination. Make sure to pay close attention to the narrow gap between the wheels.
  • Slowly rotate the left wheel of the lock. You will see a notch in the wheel line up to the mark of the outside of the lock.
  • Do the same process to the second and third wheels. If done by the same exact manner, the notches will perfectly line up with the mark on the lock.
  • Carefully slide the latch button in an outward manner to release the clasp.
  • Check if unlocking was successful and open the luggage. Then, prepare for resetting your luggage pin code.
  • To Reset Luggage pin code, push and hold the button next to the lock inside the luggage.
  • Rotate the numbered wheels slowly one at a time to the new combination you picked (make sure you remember the pin this time) and release the button.
  • Make sure to test the new lock combination if it works. Try to open and close the luggage at least twice.
  • Write down your new lock combination code and store it away from your luggage.

Other Types of Luggage Locks

Other than the Combination Locks, here are the other types of luggage locks that you might need to get acquainted to:

  • Key Locks – the most traditional type of lock out of all the locks ever invented. A classic padlock that needs a specific key to open your luggage. Though it works quite well, the danger of losing the key is quite risky.
  • Cable Locks – this type of lock quite resembles the style of combination locks. The lock is more versatile though since it has a flexible cable that you can clip to lock. Other than luggages, the lock can hold other small storage or lockers safely.
  • Key Card Locks – works quite the same as hotel key cards. This type of lock not only works efficiently but is also convenient to store. You can keep it in your wallet as it fits perfectly just like your other personal cards.
  • Retractable Cable Locks – quite similar from cable locks but also has its unique mechanism. The cable conveniently retracts inside the lock itself. It also gives you the option to lock your luggage to another object for better security.

More Luggage Tips For You!

  • First of all, never open somebody else’s luggage with this travel hack. This was not written for that purpose. Make sure you will only use the step-by-step procedure only if it happens to you or to someone you know.
  • If remembering your luggage pin is too hard, write it down and store it in your passport or wallet. Store it away from your luggage as much as possible.
  • You may email your pin code combination to yourself and entitle it “My Luggage Pin Code” or however you want to call it. Open the email when you need it.
  • Download a “notes” app in your smartphone where you can write or record your pin code safely. Pick the one that you can set a password so it’s only you who could access.
  • Set a pin code combination similar to your personal cards or account passwords so you can easily remember your luggage pin code. But be sure to not share it to anyone to avoid hackers from going through your accounts.
  • While creating a unique pin code is important, a simple pin combination for example “222”, the ones that are easier to remember are also helpful.
  • Refrain from sharing your pin code to anyone else to avoid losing your valuables.

Forgetting your luggage pin combination is no joke, especially if you don’t have an idea on how to troubleshoot it. Imagine not being able to open your luggage in the middle of a holiday vacation. That just sucks!

This article is purely dedicated to all the travelers out there to avoid this situation to happen to you. It could be hard especially when you’re traveling alone.

Have you checked your luggage pin code yet? Go ahead and make sure you still remember or safekept the luggage combination before it’s too late.

Anyways, I hope this helpful travel hack finds you well. I wish you a safe and hassle-free travel as always!

Troubleshooting tips

THE LOCK OPENS TO ANY COMBINATION

If TSA gets into your bag, it's possible the locks will open to any combination. In order to reset the lock to open at your combination, follow the directions below:

  • Turn the bag to face you with the lock in front of you (the handle being at the top)
  • Find the TSA lock slot that is to the right of the red diamond shape
  • Find a small object that can fit in that little TSA lock space
  • Turn the TSA lock slot so the 2 ends of the slot are pointing towards the arrow and red dot

This should work to straighten up that lock and reset it to the code that you set! ‍ FORGOT YOUR COMBINATION?

Unfortunately, the only way to unlock the suitcase is to set the correct combination.

How To Unlock A Travelpro Suitcase

how-to-unlock-a-travelpro-suitcase

Introduction

Unlocking a Travelpro suitcase can be a frustrating experience, especially if you’re in a rush to access your belongings. Whether you’ve forgotten the combination or simply need a refresher on how to unlock it, this article will provide you with step-by-step instructions to make the process easier. With a little patience and the right tools, you’ll be able to unlock your Travelpro suitcase in no time.

Travelpro is a well-known brand that specializes in high-quality luggage and travel essentials. Their suitcases often come equipped with a combination lock, which provides an added layer of security for your belongings. However, if you’re not familiar with how to unlock these types of locks, it can be quite daunting.

Before we dive into the steps, it’s important to note that these instructions are specifically for Travelpro suitcases with combination locks. Different models and manufacturers may have variations in their unlocking methods. Additionally, please ensure that you have the right to access the suitcase. Unauthorized attempts to unlock someone else’s luggage can lead to serious legal consequences.

Step 1: Gather necessary tools

Before you begin the process of unlocking your Travelpro suitcase, it’s important to gather the necessary tools to make the task easier. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • TSA-approved lock key: If your Travelpro suitcase has a TSA-approved lock, you’ll need the corresponding key. This key is often provided with the suitcase at the time of purchase. If you can’t locate the key, check if it’s stored in a separate compartment or pocket within the suitcase.
  • Reset tool: Some Travelpro suitcases have a reset tool that is specifically designed to unlock the combination lock. This tool is typically a small pin or tool that fits into a designated hole on the lock. If your suitcase includes this tool, make sure to have it on hand.
  • Small flashlight: Depending on the lighting conditions, a small flashlight can be helpful to clearly see the lock mechanism and digits on the lock dial.

Having these tools ready and easily accessible will ensure a smooth unlocking process and minimize any potential frustration.

Step 2: Locate the combination lock

Once you have gathered the necessary tools, the next step is to locate the combination lock on your Travelpro suitcase. The location of the lock may vary depending on the model and design of the suitcase, but it is typically found on the front or side of the suitcase.

Look for a dial or a set of numbers on a lock mechanism. The lock may be embedded into the fabric or have a separate frame around it. It is important to identify the lock before proceeding with the unlocking process.

If you are having trouble locating the combination lock, refer to the instruction manual that came with your suitcase. The manual will have detailed information on the specific location of the lock for your particular model.

Once you have identified the combination lock, make sure the dial is in the default or initial position. In some cases, the default position is indicated by a small arrow or a specific digit on the dial. Having the dial set to the correct starting position will make it easier to move forward with the unlocking process.

Now that you have located the combination lock and ensured that it is in the correct starting position, you’re ready to move on to the next step: rotating the dial to clear any previous lock settings.

Step 3: Rotate the dial to clear any previous lock settings

Before you start entering a new combination to unlock your Travelpro suitcase, it is important to clear any previous lock settings by rotating the dial. This step ensures that you begin with a fresh start, without any lingering combinations that may hinder the unlocking process.

To rotate the dial, hold the suitcase firmly in one hand and use your other hand to grip the dial. Begin by rotating the dial clockwise (to the right) for several full rotations. While doing so, make sure to apply gentle pressure and maintain a steady grip on the dial.

Rotating the dial helps to disengage any previous combination set on the lock. It also allows the internal mechanism to align and reset, preparing it for the entry of a new combination.

Continue rotating the dial clockwise until you reach the default or starting position. This will ensure that any previous lock settings are cleared, and you’re ready to proceed with the next steps of unlocking your Travelpro suitcase.

If you encounter any resistance or difficulty while rotating the dial, double-check that you have released the lock latch (if applicable) or that the lock is not damaged or jammed. If the issue persists, it may be necessary to seek professional assistance or contact Travelpro’s customer support for further guidance.

Now that you have successfully cleared any previous lock settings on your Travelpro suitcase, you’re ready to move on to step 4: setting the combination to the default or a known code.

Step 4: Set the combination to default or known code

After clearing any previous lock settings, the next step is to set the combination on your Travelpro suitcase. You have two options: setting it to the default code or using a known code that you have previously set.

If you prefer to use the default code, consult the instruction manual or contact Travelpro’s customer support to obtain the correct default combination. This code is often a series of three or four numbers. Once you have the default code, proceed with the following steps:

  • Rotate the dial clockwise to the first digit of the default code.
  • Rotate the dial counterclockwise (to the left) one full rotation until you reach the second digit of the default code.
  • Rotate the dial clockwise again to the third digit of the default code.

Once you have correctly set the dial to the three digits of the default code, the lock should release, and you will be able to open your Travelpro suitcase.

If you prefer to use a known code that you have previously set, follow these steps:

  • Rotate the dial clockwise to the first digit of the known code.
  • Rotate the dial counterclockwise one full rotation until you reach the second digit of the known code.
  • Rotate the dial clockwise again to the third digit of the known code.

Make sure to accurately input the digits of your known code in the correct order. If you enter the wrong code or input the digits in the wrong sequence, the lock will not release. In that case, clear the dial and repeat the process with the correct code.

By setting the combination to the default or a known code, you are one step closer to unlocking your Travelpro suitcase. In the next step, we will test the lock to ensure proper functioning.

Step 5: Test the lock to ensure proper functioning

Now that you have set the combination on your Travelpro suitcase, it’s important to test the lock to ensure it is functioning properly. This step will help you confirm that the correct combination has been entered and that the lock is securely engaged.

Start by closing the suitcase and making sure it is latched properly. This will ensure that the lock mechanism is fully engaged when you test it.

Next, turn the dial in a clockwise direction to the first digit of the combination. Apply gentle pressure to the dial as you rotate it, ensuring that you don’t accidentally move past the desired digit.

Once the first digit is aligned with the reference mark, continue rotating the dial clockwise to the second digit of the combination. Take your time and ensure that each digit is set accurately.

Finally, rotate the dial clockwise to the third digit of the combination. Again, be patient and confirm that the dial is aligned precisely with the correct digit.

Once you have entered the complete combination, try to unlock the Travelpro suitcase by releasing the latch or pressing the button, depending on the lock mechanism.

If the lock successfully releases and you are able to open the suitcase, congratulations! This indicates that the combination has been set correctly, and the lock is functioning properly.

However, if the lock does not release or you encounter any difficulties in opening the suitcase, double-check that the combination was entered correctly. It’s possible that a mistyped digit or a misalignment of the dial may be causing the issue. In such cases, reset the combination and repeat the process.

Now that you have tested the lock and confirmed its proper functioning, you can move on to the next step: changing the lock combination if desired.

Step 6: Change the lock combination if desired

If you prefer to have a unique combination for your Travelpro suitcase or you simply want to change the existing combination, you have the option to do so. Changing the lock combination is a straightforward process that allows you to customize the code to something that is easier for you to remember.

Here’s how you can change the lock combination on your Travelpro suitcase:

  • Ensure that the suitcase is unlocked and open.
  • Locate the small reset button or lever near the dial of the lock. This button is usually small and recessed to avoid accidental resetting.
  • Press and hold the reset button using a pen, paperclip, or the reset tool provided with your suitcase. Keep the reset button depressed with continuous pressure.
  • While holding the reset button, choose a new combination for your lock. You can select any desired three or four-digit code, depending on the lock’s specifications.
  • Rotate the dial to input the new combination, ensuring that each digit is set precisely.
  • Release the reset button. You may hear a click or feel a slight resistance when the new combination is set.

By following these steps, you can change the lock combination on your Travelpro suitcase to a code that is more memorable and convenient for you. Remember to choose a combination that is not easily guessable to maximize the security of your luggage.

Once you have successfully changed the lock combination, be sure to test the new combination by following the instructions in step 5 and ensure that the lock releases and the suitcase opens without any issues.

Now that you have changed the lock combination, it is essential to document the new code for future reference.

Step 7: Document the new lock combination for future reference

After changing the lock combination on your Travelpro suitcase, it is crucial to document the new code for future reference. This will help you avoid any confusion or frustration when trying to unlock the suitcase in the future.

There are several ways you can document the new lock combination:

  • Write it down: Use a pen and paper or a notebook to write down the new lock combination. Make sure to keep this document in a safe and secure place, such as a locked drawer or a digital password manager.
  • Take a photo: Use your smartphone or camera to take a clear photo of the new lock combination. Save the photo in a folder or a secure cloud storage platform where you can easily access it when needed.
  • Use a trusted password manager: If you already use a password manager for storing your online credentials, consider using it to store the lock combination as well. Make sure to choose a reputable and secure password manager that uses strong encryption to protect your information.

Remember, it is essential to keep your lock combination information secure and accessible only to you. Avoid sharing it with others, especially if you have sensitive or valuable items in your suitcase.

Additionally, if you choose to document the lock combination digitally, ensure that you use strong password protection for your devices and accounts to prevent unauthorized access.

By documenting the new lock combination, you can have peace of mind knowing that you can easily access your Travelpro suitcase without struggling to recall the code.

Now that you have documented the new lock combination, it’s important to keep your luggage securely locked during travel to protect your belongings.

Step 8: Keep the suitcase securely locked during travel

Once you have successfully unlocked and accessed your Travelpro suitcase, it’s important to keep it securely locked during your travels to ensure the safety of your belongings. Follow these guidelines to ensure your suitcase remains properly secured:

  • Set the lock combination: Before closing the suitcase, ensure that you set the lock combination to your desired code or the default code if you prefer. Double-check that the dial is aligned with the correct digits to ensure proper locking.
  • Ensure a snug closure: Make sure that the suitcase is securely closed and all zippers, latches, and clasps are properly fastened. This will prevent any accidental opening or easy access to your belongings.
  • Protect valuables with additional security measures: If you have valuable items or documents, consider using additional security measures like a luggage strap with a built-in lock or a cable lock to provide an extra layer of protection.
  • Use the TSA-approved lock feature: If your Travelpro suitcase includes a TSA-approved lock, enable this feature to allow transportation security officers to inspect your luggage if necessary. This lock type can be opened by a master key held by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) without damaging your lock or suitcase.
  • Keep an eye on your suitcase: While traveling, always keep a close eye on your suitcase and do not leave it unattended. Avoid placing it out of sight or in an unsecured location, as this can increase the risk of theft or tampering.
  • Follow airline guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the luggage policy and restrictions of your airline. Some airlines may require certain locks to be used or have specific regulations regarding locked suitcases. Adhering to these guidelines will help avoid any issues during check-in or security checks.

By keeping your Travelpro suitcase securely locked during your journey, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing that your belongings are protected. Remember to keep your lock combination information accessible to ensure a hassle-free unlocking process when you reach your destination.

With these steps, you have successfully learned how to unlock a Travelpro suitcase and keep it securely locked during travel. Safe travels!

Unlocking and securely locking your Travelpro suitcase is an essential part of ensuring the safety and protection of your belongings during your travels. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily unlock your suitcase and customize the combination to a code that is convenient for you.

Remember to gather the necessary tools, locate the combination lock, clear any previous lock settings, and set the combination to either the default or a known code. Once you have unlocked the suitcase, test the lock to ensure its proper functioning.

If desired, you can change the lock combination to a unique code and document it for future reference. Keeping your suitcase securely locked during travel is important, so ensure that you follow best practices such as setting the lock combination, properly closing the suitcase, and considering additional security measures.

Always stay vigilant and keep an eye on your suitcase to prevent theft or tampering. Adhere to airline guidelines and utilize TSA-approved locks, if applicable, to comply with security regulations and facilitate inspections if needed.

By following these steps and keeping your Travelpro suitcase locked securely, you can travel with peace of mind knowing that your belongings are protected. So, go ahead and embark on your next adventure, confident that your luggage is secure and your essentials are safe.

Whatever your travel needs for the season ahead, odds are that a good tote can make your packing life more organized, and less stressful—honestly, what more could you hope for? With that in mind, we've scoured the internet for the more durable, functional travel totes for every type of traveler, from the serial overpacker to the organization fiend. Here, our favorite finds for all of your journeys.

Perpetually trying to find space in your carry-on for one last thing? Meet what one T&C editor calls, "the personal item of every overpacker's dream." Featuring five exterior pockets, plus six on the interior and an detachably pouch, it will keep all of your travel essentials organized while it's sturdy-yet-lightweight construction makes it easy to tuck in "just in case" items to your hearts desire without overwhelming your arms.

The cushy, reinforced straps are easy on the shoulders, but it also has a detachable crossbody strap and a built-in sleeve to slip over the handle of your luggage if you don't feel like toting. It also comes in four sizes (we're fond of the medium for it's ability to hold oodles of stuff while still slipping neatly beneath the seat in front of you on a plane) and a seasonally-refreshed roster of more than a dozen shades, making it as stylish as it is functional.

Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote

For the "a place for everything and everything in its place" traveler, this tote has you covered with a zippered bottom pocket that's perfect for separating out toiletries or dirty shoes from the rest of your haul (an interior panel also allows you to open the bottom compartment fully, if you're craving a deeper bag.)

Available in recycled poly or sturdy canvas, at 15" x 14" x 7", it qualifies as a personal item for most airlines and has a handy luggage sleeve to pair with your suitcase. For those looking for larger options, it comes in four additional sizes as well.

Cuyana bags are a favorite of T&C editors and royals alike ( Meghan Markle is a big fan ) for their timelessly stylish silhouettes, buttery soft leather, and effortless functionality. This, their latest launch, is made specifically with travel in mind.

Crafted with lightweight, durable pebbled leather (currently available in four colorways) it offers ample interior space (a 37L volume, to be precise) plus two large pockets, a phone slip, and a key clip, as well as snaps for Cuyana devotees who want to mix in their System Flap Bag or System Zipper Pouch .

If you're more of a "shop when you get there" traveler, this bag brings the souvenir space without taking up lots of room in your primary bag. Water-repellant and roomy (it holds 32L by volume) it features rugged shoulder straps, plus an extra strap that lets it slip over the handle of roller luggage, and can fold into its own exterior pouch when not in use to make a tidy, handheld bundle.

Some things are classic for a reason. Case in point: this timeless Longchamp tote; just ask T&C 's associate shopping editor, Sophie Dweck, who's been carrying hers for over a decade . Made from sleek, easy-to-clean nylon that comes in a cornucopia of colors, it features a simple, spacious interior and strong leather straps that ensure it can stand up to anything your travels throw at it, and look good doing it.

Looking for a tote that's as useful in your day-to-day as it is when you're far away? This multi-use tote has racked up thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon for its versatility. A separate, vented shoe compartment makes it as friendly to gym sessions as beach trips, while its multiple pockets keep essentials organized. It also includes a luggage strap and a USB charging port so you can plug in your tech without rummaging through your bag for your battery pack, and comes in two sizes and almost 30 shades so it will match your travel style.

One reviewer writes: "I must say, it exceeded my expectations in every way! This bag is the perfect blend of style and functionality, making it a must-have for any woman on the go."

Type-A packers, take note: this 100% recycled polyester is all about options. Its four colorways can be worn crossbody, carried in hand, or over the shoulder, and include a zippered exterior pocket, a luggage sleeve, two water bottle holders, and a padded laptop sleeve—all with Everlane's signature modern minimalist vibe.

Available in 20 colorways and textures, this canvas tote features a luggage sleeve that also doubles as a tech pouch so your gadgets will always be at the ready. The sturdy construction and bargain price tag have made it a hit with reviewers, who site its roomy 16.5" x 9" x 14" size and comfort.

One reviewer writes: "I am so happy with this purchase! Reasonable price, large main compartment, and a few zip compartments to organize smaller items. Bag fits perfectly under airline seat, even when stuffed FULL. It stayed in place when I had it on top of my roller bag, and I noticed the shape of it kept it from making everything tip forward (which happened with my previous bag)."

For a travel bag that you can use as a purse all trip, this simple Madewell leather tote brings a perfect mix of style and space (12.75" x 12.75" x 7.5".) It even comes with an interior strap that allows you to change the shape, and doubles as a keyring.

True L.L. Bean lovers know that the brand's classic Boat and Tote bag is hard to beat—after all, it's been one of their signature styles since 1944. Crafted from rugged cotton canvas, it's tested to hold up to 500 pounds, so no matter how much you manage to overpack, this bag is guaranteed to take it on. And with four sizes and two interior lengths to choose from, as well as a dozen colors, there's a perfect one for all your needs.
