Our top picks for travel insurance for Kenya

Tin Leg

Seven Corners

Nationwide mutual insurance company.

If you’re planning a trip to Kenya, keep the following in mind.

Trips to Kenya are expensive

In 2022, the average trip to Kenya cost more than $11,500 per group, according to data published by SquareMouth . Travel insurance for Kenya can help you recoup some of your costs if something goes wrong during your trip.

For example, if you have to end your trip early due to a covered event, your insurance provider may reimburse your unused prepaid expenses, such as hotel stays and local excursions.

Traveling to Kenya

Not only is international travel expensive, but it also requires careful planning. If you depart from the United States, you may have to stop at Heathrow in London, Charles de Gaulle in Paris or Schiphol in Amsterdam. The more legs you have in your journey, the more likely it is that you’ll encounter at least one delay.

Attractions in Kenya

A trip to Kenya is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can visit Mombasa, take a safari through the Maasai Mara National Reserve or walk through Amboseli National Park. If you love museums, you may want to travel to Nairobi, Kenya. You can even climb Mount Kenya or visit the Sarara Singing Wells in Laikipia.

Whether you’re feeling adventurous or looking for laid-back activities, many Kenya attractions are in remote locations. Travel insurance for Kenya covers the cost of medical evacuation, ensuring you get the care you need even if you’re far from the nearest medical facility.

You’re not legally required to have travel insurance for a trip to Kenya, but we highly recommend purchasing a policy.

Comprehensive travel insurance protects you in a variety of situations.

Risk of terrorism and political demonstrations

Due to ongoing conflict at the borders of Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia, Kenya has a higher-than-average risk of terrorism, kidnapping and political demonstrations. Travel insurance may cover trip cancellations or interruptions due to domestic terrorism or civil unrest.

Bandits and petty crime

Occasionally, bandits cross the Somalia/Kenya border to commit thefts and other petty crimes. These bandits are known as “shifta.” Carjackings and scams are also common. In many cases, Kenya travel insurance covers lost or stolen belongings.

Insect bites, illness and disease

Although the prevalence of malaria in Kenya has declined, it’s still rather common, according to USAID . Kenya is also home to several other insect-borne illnesses, including Rift Valley fever, Dengue, filariasis and African sleeping sickness. If food isn’t cooked and stored correctly, there’s also a risk of contracting hepatitis, measles, cholera and meningococcal diseases.

You can reduce your risk of contracting insect-borne illnesses by using bug spray during your trip. Vaccinations are also available for measles, hepatitis, meningitis and Dengue virus. Due to the risk of contracting these diseases, it’s essential to have medical coverage for your trip to Kenya.

Adventure activities

Some of the most popular attractions in Kenya involve adventure sports and other risky activities. For example, many people board hot-air balloons to watch the wildebeest migrate over Masai Mara.

Standard travel insurance and safari travel insurance policies generally don’t cover these activities, but it’s possible to purchase an adventure add-on for extra protection. Add-ons cover additional risks, making your travel insurance policy even more comprehensive.

Severe weather and natural disasters

Flash flooding, landslides and torrential rains are some of the possible weather-related risks you’ll encounter in Kenya. Your travel insurance provider may reimburse your prepaid costs if you have to cancel or interrupt a trip due to unforeseen risks. For example, if a landslide occurs without warning, you may be able to cancel and get your money back.

Kenya travel insurance covers a wide range of circumstances.

Let’s take a look at the different types of coverage to help you decide which ones are necessary for your trip.

Travel medical insurance

Imagine you’re looking for elephants at Amboseli National Reserve when you fall and break your femur. U.S. health insurance doesn’t work in Kenya, so you need travel medical insurance to cover the cost of your care. For example, you may need to undergo surgery or stay in the hospital for several days. SquareMouth recommends purchasing at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage before you travel to Kenya.

Medical evacuation insurance

If you injure yourself while cycling through Hell’s Gate National Park, you can’t exactly have a tour guide drive you a few miles to a hospital. You’ll need to pay for medical evacuation, which is extremely expensive. SquareMouth recommends purchasing at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage , but some companies offer up to $1 million in medevac coverage per policy.

Trip cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation insurance allows you to cancel your trip for a covered reason and get reimbursed for your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

A covered reason is an unforeseen event that forces you to cancel your trip.

These are some examples:

  • Death of the traveler
  • Death of a travel companion
  • Death of a non-traveling family member
  • Natural disasters
  • Inclement weather (e.g. flash flooding during the rainy season)

Cancel-for-any-reason insurance

Regular cancellation coverage only reimburses you for covered events. If you’re concerned that you’ll have to cancel for another reason, purchase cancel-for-any-reason insurance .

CAFR allows you to cancel your trip for any reason, such as a change in travel plans or fear of kidnapping. Many providers allow you to get back 75% of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you use your CAFR coverage.

Trip interruption insurance

Once you arrive in Kenya, you may encounter a circumstance that forces you to end your trip early. For example, if you contract a foodborne illness, you may be too ill to enjoy all the activities on your itinerary. Trip interruption insurance reimburses the unused portion of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

Assume you spent $700 per night on your hotel and planned to stay in Kenya for seven nights. If you have to end your trip after just two nights, your trip interruption insurance would reimburse you $3,500 ($700 per night for five unused nights).

Trip delay insurance

Unless you live in or around New York City, it’s tough to get a direct flight to Kenya. It’s more likely that you’ll have several layovers, increasing the likelihood of a delay. For example, if one of your flights takes off late, you may miss your connection, throwing off the whole trip.

Trip delay insurance reimburses you for the loss of prepaid expenses caused by delays. It also covers delay-related costs, such as meals, transportation and overnight accommodations. For example, if a long delay causes you to miss your first prepaid excursion, your trip delay insurance should reimburse you for the loss.

Adventure activity coverage

People flock to Diani Beach, just south of Mombasa, to go jet skiing and enjoy other adventure activities. Since standard insurance policies don’t cover these activities, you may need to purchase an add-on.

Baggage insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance also covers lost, stolen, delayed or damaged baggage. For example, if your luggage arrives in Kenya two days after you do, your insurer may reimburse you for the cost of buying new toiletries or purchasing clothing to wear during the first few days of your trip.

Kenya travel insurance typically doesn’t cover the following:

  • Injuries arising from drug/alcohol use or illicit activities
  • Normal pregnancy expenses
  • Preexisting medical conditions
  • Cancellations/interruptions due to foreseeable events
  • Fear of flying/fear of travel
  • Named storms
  • Medical tourism

Travel insurance for a trip to Kenya can cost as little as around $2 per day for basic medical and medevac coverage.

To give you a better idea of how much coverage costs , we got price quotes from some of the top insurance providers . All of our price quotes follow Squaremouth’s guidelines of having at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

The quotes are based on the following criteria:

  • Age: 50 years old
  • State of residency: California
  • Destination: Kenya
  • Trip Length: 14 days
  • Time of trip: August 2024
  • Trip cost: $8,000

For this first example, we got quotes for basic coverage. These travel insurance plans cost around $2 to $5 per day .

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

For our next example, our quotes are for comprehensive plans that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage. They range from around $26 to $54 per day .

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Keep in mind that the cost of travel insurance varies based on several factors:

  • The length of the trip
  • The total trip cost
  • Number of travelers in the group
  • Your destination

This means that how much you’ll pay will differ from the quotes displayed above. For accurate pricing, we recommend you try getting a quote .

To get the best travel insurance for Kenya, follow these steps:

Review your transportation options.

If you have to take multiple flights or use some type of public transportation when you arrive in Kenya, you’ll need extra coverage for delays.

Check your itinerary.

There’s no such thing as a risk-free trip, but some activities are riskier than others. If you plan to climb Mount Kenya, go ballooning or participate in other adventure activities, make sure you purchase add-on coverage.

Buy your policy as early as possible.

Travel insurance only covers unforeseen events, which are events that happen unexpectedly. The longer you wait to purchase coverage, the more likely it is that an unforeseen event will turn into a foreseen event, preventing you from recouping your costs. For example, if you buy a policy after a named storm forms, your insurer won’t reimburse you for any losses associated with the storm.

Is it safe to visit Kenya?

It’s generally safe to visit Kenya, but pay close attention to your surroundings and keep your belongings secure. The U.S. State Department recommends avoiding areas of Kenya that are close to the country’s border with Somalia. Some coastal areas of Kenya also have an increased risk of kidnapping.

You’re not required to purchase travel insurance for Kenya, but we highly recommend it. A comprehensive travel insurance policy can save you the heartache of losing your money if you have to cancel or end your trip early.

Does health insurance for Kenya cover travel expenses?

Standard health insurance only covers medical expenses incurred during your trip, but it’s possible to purchase a comprehensive policy that reimburses you for a variety of travel-related expenses.

Can I buy travel insurance after I've started my trip to Kenya?

It depends on the provider. Some companies allow you to purchase insurance after you’ve started your trip, but others don’t. We recommend buying in advance of your trip to get the broadest coverage.

Is medical travel insurance worth it for a trip to Kenya?

Absolutely. U.S. health insurance doesn’t work in Kenya, so you’ll need some way to cover any emergency medical expenses you incur during your trip.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Kenya

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Kenya. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Kenya can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. How Does Travel Insurance Work in the Kenya?

Let's consider a scenario: You're out in the bush of the East Tsavo National Park, keeping watch for elephant herds and prowling lions. But, suddenly, you don't feel all that well. You've got the shivers, muscle aches, and tiredness. Folks with travel insurance will often get support to help connect them with the right medical professionals, to check whether their symptoms need more careful attention or just good old rest and recuperation. Kenya, after all, remains high-risk for malaria and dengue fever, so it's good to make sure! Here’s how travelers can benefit from an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits

  • Trip Interruption: In case of an unexpected event, you could be eligible for reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Kenya?

The Kenyan government has no official decree that says travelers to the country have to purchase travel insurance. But, given the nature of the activities that most people come here for – safaris out in the wild, hiking adventures on high-altitude peaks, food tours of the Nairobi street markets – it's often a good idea to ensure you have cover before jetting off. Why? There are several reasons:

Medical Emergencies: An insurance product like AXA Travel Protection offers the means to receive prompt medical care whenever it's needed, no matter whether you sprain an ankle or get a tummy bug.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Flight Delays: We know that whole safaris can be ruined by late flights into Nairobi, which is why travel insurance often offers support in the event of delays caused by airlines, covering expenses incurred because of missed arrivals.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for Kenya?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Kenya will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Kenya hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. There's even greater flexibility involved with our Platinum Plan. That gives " Cancel for Any Reason " cover, which means you'll get protection against itinerary and travel plan changes without having to offer any justification. The package also includes additional coverage on rental cars, which could be a welcoming extra for anyone planning on hitting the bumpy, busy, backcountry roads of the East African Rift Valley!

Axa covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: unexpected incidents that arise, such as broken bones, burns, unexpected illnesses and allergic reactions

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: not all emergencies are medical related. You could be traveling during a period of civil unrest or throughout a natural disaster, and require repatriation to your home country because of it

The remaining COVID-19 restrictions for Kenya were dropped in May 2023, though the authorities here still ask anyone with symptoms to declare them at the border and be tested prior to entry. To stay up-to-date with Kenya’s restriction visit, Department of State for Travel to Kenya .

Traveling with preexisting medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip. Our Gold and Platinum  plans offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.  The Platinum plan, in particular, is our highest-offered choice for travelers who want our highest coverage limits and optional add-ons,

What does this mean for you? If you've got a medical condition that's been hanging around, you can qualify for coverage under our Gold and Platinum plans with a pre-existing medical condition , so long as it’s within 14 days of placing your initial trip deposit and in our 60-day look-back period. We're here to ensure you travel easily, no matter your health situation.

1.Can you buy travel insurance after booking a flight?

You can buy travel insurance even after your flight is booked.

2.When should I buy Travel Insurance to Kenya?

It's advisable to purchase travel insurance for your trip as soon as you have made your initial trip deposit (prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.) AXA Travel Protection offers coverage as soon as you purchase your protection plan. We can give coverage against unforeseen events before you leave for your trip. Additionally, our policies offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions and Cancel for Any Reason if you purchase your protection within 14-days of making your initial trip deposit.

3.Do Americans need travel insurance in Kenya?

There's no legal requirement for American travelers to obtain travel insurance for Kenya.

4.What is needed to visit Kenya from the USA?

If you're visiting Kenya from the US, be sure to have a valid American passport and to complete the eVisa application before you jet off. An eVisa is typically valid for up to three months from the date of issue.

5.What happens if a tourist gets sick in Kenya?

If you become sick in Kenya, travelers with AXA Travel protection can contact the AXA Assistance hotline 855-327-1442 . Contact information is typically provided within the insurance documentation. Please ensure to read through your policy details and information.

Kenya Health Insurance for Expatriates

Health Consideration for Visitors to Kenya

Kenya, in theory, provides public healthcare to its population. Basic primary care is provided to the Kenyans at primary health care centers and dispensaries. Dispensaries are what Americans would call clinics; they are run and managed by registered nurses who are supervised by the nursing officer. These dispensaries provide outpatient services for simple concerns like a cold or flu, common rashes or skin conditions, and other uncomplicated problems. In more complicated cases, patients are referred on to physician care.

Community hospitals are able to provide routine surgical and maternity care, while the most complicated cases are handled at the large public hospitals in Nairobi.

While this public system does exist, Kenyans and expats alike tend to use the private system whenever they can afford it.

Some of the Top Hospitals in Kenya

  • The Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa
  • Aga Khan Hospitals
  • Gertrude Gardens Children’s Hospital
  • Kenyatta National Hospital
  • Kijabe Mission Hospital

Private Healthcare in Kenya

In the largest cities, Nairobi and Mombasa, there are well respected, reputable private hospitals and practitioners who provide a high standard of care in most medical cases. However, for complex cases or sometimes just as a personal preference, many expats from the west choose to be evacuated to South Africa or even to the UK.

Paying for private treatment or evacuation out of pocket is prohibitively expensive, and for this reason, selecting a global travel health insurance plan that includes emergency evacuation coverage is a must.

Even before you arrive in Kenya, it is a good idea to use the internet to locate the closest hospital to your home and place of work. Keep their emergency phone numbers and ambulance service number (if it is different) in a safe and obvious place. While there is a public emergency number (999), it will connect you with government-run hospital ambulance services – which are certainly better than not having a number at all, and there will almost always be someone who speaks English.

Vaccinations Required for Visitors to Kenya

As before any travel abroad, it is important to ensure that your regular common immunizations are up-to-date before your trip. These vaccines, as recommended by the CDC , include MMR, tetanus, diphtheria, and polio as well as an annual influenza (flu) vaccine. Most travel physicians and clinics also recommend hepatitis A and B, typhoid and yellow fever vaccines for travel to this area of the world.

The risk of malaria in Kenya exists, but the size of the risk will depend on where you plan to be. See the CDC’s Kenya recommendations . In addition, other insect-borne diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya can be avoided by wearing insect repellent with DEET.

A note about Travelers’ Diarrhea: Diseases that come from food and water are still the number one cause of illness in travelers. Travelers’ Diarrhea can come from viruses, bacteria, or parasites, all of which are found in Kenya (and most of the world) and can contaminate food or water. Do your best to consume food from places that serve other westerners.

Is the Water Safe to Drink in Kenya?

Bottled water is widely available is the only guaranteed safe water to drink in Kenya. Even then, make sure you purchase water that is in a sealed bottle and that you avoid using unpackaged straws which can also harbor germs.

Avoid consuming water straight from the taps. If this is the only source available, boil the water and then cool it before drinking.

Common Sense Tips for Staying Healthy and Safe While in Kenya

  • Eat and drink food from known sources
  • Prevent insect bites by wearing repellent containing DEET
  • Avoid animals that are not known to you
  • Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose whenever possible

Personal and Public Safety in Kenya

The US, Canadian and UK governments all recommend that their citizens traveling to Kenya be vigilant in this country. This is a result of a rise in the number and frequency of terrorist attacks and crime occurring in the country. Areas that require an especially high degree of caution include the cities of Nairobi and Mombasa, as well as the regions bordering Somalia, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

Tips for Staying Safe While Traveling in Kenya

  • Make a copy of your passport and keep it in your luggage; keep a password-protected electronic copy stored online
  • Don’t walk on your own at night in the major cities or on empty beaches
  • Do not wear jewelry
  • Do not carry too much cash with you
  • Wear a money belt that fits under your clothes
  • Don’t carry a lot of camera equipment especially in the major cities
  • Beware of thieves posing as police officers or other conmen
  • Choose recommended transportation options
  • Plan your route ahead of time and avoid unknown or dangerous neighborhoods

Finding the Right Travel Insurance for Visitors to Kenya

For individuals planning a move or extended travel to Kenya, there are two important things to keep in mind:

  • There is likely to be a lack of access to public medical care for foreigners.
  • The public healthcare options, if accessible, will most likely be below the standard of care that you expect or feel comfortable using.

Finding the global health insurance plan is a critical part of planning your travel. If you are moving for a job, most employers will provide healthcare insurance as part of a benefits package. Even so, consider a global medical plan if you are working in Kenya, self-employed or staying longer term.

If you will only be working the country short-term or you are simply traveling for pleasure, you will be best served by a travel medical insurance plan .

Kenya Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

Squaremouth’s Kenya Travel Insurance Recommendations

Home to more than 50 national parks, Africa’s second highest mountain, and some of the world’s most diverse wildlife populations, it’s no surprise why tourists from around the world flock to Kenya. Even though Kenya has no official travel insurance requirements, country officials and travel experts both strongly urge all visitors to obtain a travel insurance policy due to high trip costs and the potential for high medical bills.

When traveling to Kenya, Squaremouth recommends a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes the following benefits:

Kenya Cancellation Coverage

From flights to safari tours, visiting Kenya can be a costly adventure. In 2022, Squaremouth data indicates that the average trip to Kenya cost travelers more than $11,5000 per group.

Having a travel insurance policy with cancellation coverage is a smart way to protect your trip investment. With the Trip Cancellation benefit, travelers can be reimbursed if they fall ill, get injured, or experience other covered disruptions prior to departing for their trip.

Policies with Trip Cancellation also include Trip Interruption coverage, which can provide travelers reimbursement if unexpected events cause them to return home from their trip early. This benefit applies to travelers that have already departed for their trip and have unused, nonrefundable trip costs.

Common covered reasons include unforeseen illness, injury, or death of the traveler, a traveling companion, or a non-traveling family member. Other covered cancellation reasons may also include terrorism, inclement weather, or a natural disaster, among others. With this coverage, travelers can receive up to 100% reimbursement for their insured trip costs.

Kenya Travel Medical Insurance

Safaris and cultural tourism are some of the main drivers of visitors to Kenya, often taking travelers deep into remote areas of the countryWhen traveling to remote locations, far from hospitals and treatment facilities, it’s recommended to have a policy with high medical coverage.

Medical coverage is broken down into two main components, Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation .

The Emergency Medical benefit covers the costs of medical treatment in the event of an illness or injury during their trip. If a traveler gets sick or injured while in Kenya, this benefit can cover physician services, ambulance expenses, and other costs of treatment. Given the potential high costs of treatment, we recommend a policy of at least $100,000 in Emergency Medical coverage.

The Medical Evacuation benefit can transport a traveler to the nearest adequate hospital in the event of a medical emergency. For example, if a traveler experiences an emergency while on a safari, this benefit can cover the costs of an evacuation. Due to the significant costs of an emergency evacuation, we recommend Kenya visitors find a policy with at least $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

Kenya Delay Coverage

While Kenya is home to one of Africa’s busiest airports, many tourists still may need to take a multi-leg journey to reach their destination. With that said, many comprehensive travel insurance policies offer protection for travelers that experience delays that impact their trip.

With the Travel Delay benefit, travelers can get reimbursed the cost of food and accommodations expenses incurred during a delay. A policy’s Missed Connection benefit can also reimburse travelers if a delay causes travelers to miss a connecting flight on route to or from their destination.

In addition, most comprehensive travel insurance policies come with both Baggage Delay coverage and Baggage & Personal Items Loss protection. Both benefits will offer reimbursement to travelers if their baggage gets damaged, delayed, or lost at any point during their trip.

Kenya Travel Insurance Trends and Data

For many, Kenya is the ultimate ‘once in a lifetime’ safari trip, with quintessential African wildlife and scenery on offer all throughout the nation.

 What is Travel Insurance?

Travel  insurance is  a  type  of insurance that covers the costs and  losses  associated with traveling. It is a plan you purchase that protects you from certain financial risks that can occur while traveling, such as a delayed suitcase, a trip cancellation, or a medical emergency overseas. Helps travelers deal with various contingencies that can occur during their trips.

The Significance of Travel Insurance

This insurance is significant because it offers travelers peace of mind and financial protection. It ensures that they are not burdened with exorbitant costs in case of unexpected incidents such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, or other unforeseen events during their travels.

Benefits of Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is more than just protection; it's your ticket to peace of mind. It goes beyond addressing health risks and travel disruptions; it empowers you to immerse yourself in the Honduran experience fully.

Maasai mara national reserve.

Maasai Mara National Reserve , locally known simply as The Mara, is one of Africa’s most magnificent game reserves in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

The park is famous for the Great Migration, when thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle travel to and from the Serengeti, from July through October. In the Mara River, throngs of hippos and crocodiles lurk. The park is also known for providing excellent predator sightings, thanks to its relatively large populations of lions, cheetah, and leopard – especially in the dry months from December through February.

Lamu Island

Lamu Island  is a port, city, and island of Kenya, just off the shore in the Indian Ocean approximately 240 km from Mombasa.

The island oozes old-world charm. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lamu Old Town is Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited settlement, with origins dating back to the 12th century. You can see the island’s rich trading history reflected in the buildings, with architectural features from the Arab world, Europe, and India. Lamu island also takes you back in time. Dhows plow the harbor, few if any motorized vehicles exist here, and donkeys still rule the streets as they have done for centuries. Lastly, one of the top attractions on the island is the Lamu Museum, with displays of Swahili culture and the region’s nautical history.

If you have any health issue you can advise your TO to include an AMREF flying medical cover on your safari package https://flydoc.org/maisha/ Amref have the best medical cover for tourists.

I used AIG and got a Travel Guard Plus policy for trip in September. It includes trip cancellation, travel medical expense and emergency evacuation. I found them very helpful and policy was reasonable. Hopefully won't have to use it but good to have.

I go to insuremytrip.com and enter my details and it presents a range of possibilities that I can then do a side by side comparison on and narrow down my options based on what I want covered. Note that if you’re buying it more than 14 days after you put down a deposit, it will not cover anything resulting from pre-existing conditions.

Kenya Visa and Entry Information

The Directorate of Immigration Services has introduced www.evisa.go.ke , a platform that enables visitors to apply for the Republic of Kenya E-visa online, eliminating the need to visit a Kenyan diplomatic mission or obtain a visa upon arrival.

An E-visa is a PDF document that authorises visitors to travel to a Kenyan entry point. To enter Kenya, present the E-visa to an immigration officer at any entry point. The officer will grant entry by issuing a visitor's pass and endorsing it on the passport.

The Category 2 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within three months from the date of issue, while the Category 3 Single Entry Visa is valid for travel within one month.

The visa can be accessed by your airline or at the port through an electronic system managed by the Kenyan Government. Once the E-visa is issued, travellers can proceed to an entry point where their passport will be stamped, granting them entry.

Best Time to Visit Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya depends on your interests and preferences. However, the dry season from June to October is generally considered the best time to visit for wildlife viewing and safaris.

During this time, the weather is sunny and warm, with little rainfall. This makes it easier to spot animals as they congregate around water sources.

Additionally, the dry season coincides with the Great Migration, one of the world's most spectacular natural events.

We've gathered the best cheap travel insurance plans to help you protect your trip while on a budget.

Compare the Top Affordable Travel Insurance

The best travel insurance meets your needs at a price you're willing to pay. Sometimes, you're just not willing to pay that much. The following companies offer decent coverage for low prices. To determine which companies made this list, we compared quotes across the travel insurance industry for the same trip, making a note of which companies offered particularly good coverage in certain areas and which companies were well reviewed.

Here are the best affordable travel insurance companies picked by Business Insider editors in 2024.

Best overall: HTH Worldwide

The HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance Economy plan offers the most comprehensive coverage across major categories of all the providers in this guide.

You'll have some peace of mind with up to $75,000 of financial protection for eligible medical emergencies, and up to $500,000 per person for medical evacuation costs. For more everyday expenses, you can also relax with baggage loss and delay, trip interruption, cancellation and delay coverage that will help you recoup many, if not all, of your costs.

However, this plan falls short on missed connection benefits and accidental death coverage, both of which are not available under most circumstances (missed connection coverage only applies to cruises, and will only cover up to $500 per person after a three-hour delay).

Read our HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance review here.

The Aegis Travel Insurance Trip Cancellation Plan is exactly that: a cost-effective plan that offers protection in the event that your trip is canceled for a covered reason. The plan we priced out for our hypothetical trip cost just 1.16% of our total travel expenses — a very small amount of money to pay for the guarantee of our money back in the right circumstances.

The benefit is that this plan can supplement other coverage you already have, or give you a little bit of protection for a trip where you might not otherwise have opted for insurance altogether. On the downside, you won't get any protection for medical emergencies, trip interruption or delays or lost bags from this plan.

Read our Aegis Travel Insurance review here.

Best value: Nationwide

Nationwide Travel Insurance  is a well-rounded alternative to HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Economy. This plan offers solid protection for both travel-related snafus as well as situations that might call for emergency medical and evacuation, making it a good choice for trips where you have cause to worry about potential interruptions or delays. However, it does not offer protection for missed connections or accidental death.

Read our Nationwide Travel Insurance review here

Best for reputation: Trawick

The Trawick International Travel Insurance Safe Travels Explorer plan has been purchased by more than 36,000 travelers since 2020, and it has great reviews to boot. And no wonder: Trawick offers generous trip delay coverage of up to $2,000 per person, although hopefully you won't need to reach that reimbursement amount because the daily limit is $150.

You'll also be able to rely on a $200 reimbursement per person for lost baggage - one of the higher amounts amongst these affordable plans, although this amount pales in comparison to the baggage loss coverage offered through the best travel credit cards .

Types of Affordable Travel Insurance

Comprehensive coverage.

This type of insurance offers extensive protection, covering everything from medical issues to trip cancellations. While it's more expensive up front, it can save you a lot in the long run.

Medical-Only Coverage

As the name suggests, this policy focuses solely on medical emergencies, making it a cost-effective option for travelers who are primarily concerned about health-related expenses.

Evacuation and Repatriation

In extreme cases where you need to be evacuated due to a medical emergency or a natural disaster, this coverage ensures that you can return home safely without incurring huge costs.

Benefits of Opting for Cheap Travel Insurance

Cost savings.

Cheap travel insurance can significantly reduce your travel expenses, ensuring that you're not overpaying for coverage you might not need.

Adequate Coverage for Less

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's lacking. Many affordable policies offer substantial coverage, giving you peace of mind without breaking the bank.

How to Pick The Best Cheap Travel Insurance Plan for You

No single travel insurance plan will meet the needs of every single traveler. By nature, we are diverse and evolving meaning travel insurance should be equally so. Travel insurance for a week-long trip to a big city shouldn't be the same as the coverage for a backpacking expedition in the mountains. A splurge to purchase comprehensive insurance coverage may also be worth it for international ventures or other large expenditures.

In most cases, the cost difference between a basic and comprehensive travel insurance plan isn't as significant as you might think. Regardless, it's generally a good idea to choose a trusted travel insurance provider known for exceptional customer service and coverage. (For this roundup, we looked at traveler reviews shared through the travel agency SquareMouth.)

  • Assessing Your Travel Needs: Consider the nature of your trip, the destination, and your own personal needs when choosing a policy. This ensures that you're not over-insured or underinsured.
  • Comparing Different Policies: Don't settle for the first policy you find. Compare different options, looking at their coverage and prices, to find the best fit for your budget and needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print: Always read the terms and conditions carefully to understand what's covered, what's not, and the process for making a claim.

How We Reviewed Cheap Travel Insurance

To determine the best insurance plan for travelers on a budget, we evaluated dozens of products using a hypothetical trip to Australia for a single traveler, age 26, with a total cost of $2,500 for flight, hotel and other incidentals. We then compiled the plans that covered the essentials at the lowest costs.

Of note: All of these plans include COVID-related medical coverage and 24-hour assistance, and pay at least 100% of your trip cost for eligible trip cancellations. None include rental car coverage.

The four winning plans cost between $29 to $74 — significantly below the average cost of comprehensive travel insurance , which can range between 4%-8% of total travel expenses, according to the US Travel Insurance Association.

But these affordable plans also come with comparably low ceilings for various aspects of coverage such as emergency medical, trip cancellation, or delay — and do not include rental car or " cancel for any reason" (CFAR) protection . So if you think you might need these benefits, it may well be worth upgrading to a comprehensive travel insurance plan for a few more dollars, just for the peace of mind.

Convenience and Flexibility

Each of the plans in this list include 24-hour assistance worldwide from reputable insurance providers. And despite being on the lower end of insurance plans, each of these options includes refunds for up to 100% of your total trip cost for eligible reasons. Each of these plans also includes medical coverage for COVID-related issues that may arise during your travels, which may come in handy as the pandemic continues to evolve worldwide.

Sufficient Coverage in Essential Categories

The cheapest travel insurance plan will rarely cover every scenario that could go awry on your trip. However, each of these plans can at least help you get your money back in the event that your travel is canceled for an eligible reason, and most of them include travel medical insurance if you incur emergency medical bills while traveling. We also factor in what travelers are most concerned about now.

Best Cheap Travel Insurance FAQs

How can i reduce the cost of travel insurance.

You can reduce the cost of travel insurance by opting for simpler coverage or choosing higher deductibles on travel medical insurance. You can also consider annual travel insurance , which will save you money in the long run if you take multiple trips over one year.

Can cheap travel insurance provide enough coverage for international trips?

Yes, many affordable policies offer comprehensive coverage suitable for international travel. It's crucial to compare policies and understand your needs. You can find our guide on the best international travel insurance here.

Why is travel insurance so cheap?

Travel insurance is relatively cheap because it only covers you for a set period of time, and depending on your plan, the level of coverage you get may not be particularly high. However, even with high coverage limits and extras like cancel for any reason coverage , travel insurance is relatively affordable.

How much should travel insurance cost?

The average cost of travel insurance is 4%-8% of your trip's cost. This usually translates into a premium between $89 to $399. That said, many companies offer premiums far below average costs.

How do I find the right travel insurance plan for my budget?

When shopping for travel insurance, consider the type of trip you're planning. If you're planning leisurely excursions in a big city, you may not need as much emergency medical coverage as you would if you're planning a serious hiking expedition in the mountains. A good plan should include trip cancellation, some emergency medical protection, and 24-hour assistance at a minimum.
