Using EasyCard in Taiwan: Everything You Need to Know

A white transportation card called EasyCard with strips of yellow, pink, blue, and green

EasyCard ( official site / order here ) is Taiwan’s most popular and common reloadable smartcard for both locals and travelers. This super handy card can be used to swipe onto public transportation and pay for other things in Taipei an across Taiwan.

Using an EasyCard is simple and easy – hence the name! But there are still quite a few questions you might have about it: How to buy and load it? How to buy cute ones? EasyCard for kids or seniors? Is it the same as the Taipei Fun Pass or iPass? Can I refund the deposit? In this article, you’ll find the most current answers to all those questions and more.

What is Easy Card?

EasyCard is also called Yoyo Card (Chinese: 悠遊卡 or youyou ka , literally “leisurely traveling card”. Some people colloquially call it their “Taipei MRT Card or just “MRT card”.

This rechargeable smartcard was first introduced in Taipei (see my Taipei city guide ) in 2010 to make it faster and easier for passengers to swipe in and out of Taipei MRT stations .

Over time, it became possible to swipe the card for buses, ferries, YouBike, and even some taxis . It can also be used to pay for items at most convenience stores , as well as some department stores, supermarkets, parking lots, and tourist attractions .

EasyCard acceptance has also spread around the country, including in Kaohsiung city , which has the competing iPass – a similar smartcard that can now also be used across the country.

You can’t pay for EVERYTHING in Taiwan with EasyCard. You’ll still need cash to pay for lots of things, not to mention you can only use cash to top up your EasyCard.

How Much Does it Cost?

One regular, adult EasyCard has a TWD 100 non-refundable deposit . In the past, you could return the card at the end of your trip, and get the 100 dollars back, but now you can’t.

Besides the deposit, you also need to load some money onto the card before using it. A standard adult card costs TWD 500, so that means you’ll have a balance of 400 for riding around.

If you buy it from an MRT station service window, you can ask them to put any amount.

Where Can I Buy It?

The three main ways to buy an EasyCard are on Klook , in any MRT station in Taiwan (including Airport MRT stations), or at any convenience store.

If you buy your EasyCard on Klook before you arrive in Taiwan, there are a few advantages. First, this is the one of the few ways you can buy and load an EasyCard with your credit card .

In Taiwan, you can only buy or load them with cash at most places (Exceptions: EZFly counter at Taoyuan International Airport , but you can only load 200 there, and you can use credit card to buy EasyCards at some convenience stores, but not to load them with money).

You will have to pick it up upon arrival at Taoyuan International Airport. The pickup kiosk is the Unite Traveler Counter . It is located in the Arrivals Hall of each terminal – see the Klook page for a map of each one.

The Unite counter is open 4:30 AM to 11 PM , so I don’t recommend ordering your EasyCard on Klook if you arriving in Taiwan between 10 PM and 3:30 AM (it usually takes about 1 hour to get through the arrival process at Taoyuan Airport).

The Klook deal comes with the option to add TWD 200 or 400. So once you include the 100-dollar deposit, you will need to pay TWD 300 or 500. There’s also the option to add a SIM card by Chunghwa. This is my most recommended SIM Card for Taiwan – see why in my Taiwan SIM card guide .

You can also buy a Chunghwa SIM card on its own , without an EasyCard.

In Any MRT Station

An EasyCard kiosk at Taoyuan Airport MRT station

If you are arriving early or late at Taoyuan International Airport, or you don’t want to buy the card on Klook, you can just buy it in the Airport MRT station. You can also do this if you’re landing at Songshan Airport in the Taipei City center or any other airports in Taiwan which are connected to MRT stations.

As you’re walking into the Airport MRT station, watch for the EZfly counter , which sells TWD 300 EasyCards (100 deposit + 200 for spending). They even take credit cards – the only place in Taiwan I’m aware of that you can buy a pre-loaded EasyCard with credit card, besides ordering one on Klook.

Only the Taoyuan Airport MRT station has this EZfly kiosk. In all other MRT stations in the city, you can just buy an EasyCard from the service window, with cash only.

You can also buy a TWD 500 card from the “ IC Card Vebnding / Top Up” machines (100 deposit + 400 for using). The machines only take cash. Note that these are not the same as the machines used for buying single ride tokens (the purple ones on the left above). You can also buy an EasyCard from the Airport MRT station service window . They can put any amount you want.

There are also machines and service windows in every MRT station in Taipei, Taoyuan (including Airport MRT), Taichung , or Kaohsiung. You can buy a card and add any amount you want at the window, in cash only. Service hours are around 6 AM to midnight.

In a Convenience Store

You can also buy an EasyCard at any major convenience store branch in Taiwan. These include 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, HiLife, OK Mart, I-Mei Foods, and Simple Mart.

These convenience stores are EVERYWHERE in Taiwan, so you’ll never have trouble finding one.

How Can I Buy a Cute EasyCard?

A hand holding up an EasyCard in a paper and plastic holder with Pokemon characters all over it and a shelf of Pokemon stuffies behind

Buying your EasyCard at a convenience store has one additional bonus. They carry all kinds of super cute ones! They might feature cartoons, Taiwanese foods, animals, or scenes of Taiwan.

These cute MRT cards are changing all the time, but you can browse the latest cute EasyCard options here . Once in the past, there was even an EasyCard featuring a Japanese p*rn star !

Some of these cute EasyCards cost more, though. You can expect a deposit of TWD 199 to 399 instead of the usual TWD 100 for most of them. But there are even some cute ones which still only cost TWD 100.

At the Pokemon Center in Taipei, you can also buy TWD 100 Pokemon themed EasyCards (same price as a normal one!) at the till.

EasyCards for kids, students, seniors, or disabled?

A cure orange Taipei MRT Concessionaire card with a cartoon character on it

Kids under six (age 0-5) can ride the MRT for free in Taipei and other cities in Taiwan, including the Airport MRT. If your child is above 115 cm, they may ask the see ID.

Children aged 6-12, seniors, or the disabled can get a concessionaire card . The card only gives some very small discounts. You can only get the concessionaire card at an MRT station or convenience store. You cannot order one on Klook. You may need to show ID proving your age or disability to get it.

Unfortunately, children just visiting Taiwan cannot apply for student MRT cards , which give a bigger discount. If you’re a foreign student in Taiwan, your school or university may issue you a student ID card which also has EasyCard function. If not, you get a student EasyCard at any MRT station by showing your Taiwanese school ID (IDs from schools outside Taiwan won’t be accepted).

How do I Recharge my EasyCard?

A row of three EasyCard reloading machines in a Taipei MRT station

When your MRT card runs low or runs out of money, it’s time to reload it. Every time you enter or exit an MRT station, take note of the remaining balance (not possible to see on buses, shops, etc). You can also check the balance of your card at one of the reloading machines or service window in any station or on this website .

It’s possible to dip into your TWD 100 deposit. For example, if your card only has TWD 5 balance left on it, you’ll still be able to enter the MRT. If your ride costs TWD 30, you will have a –25 balance when you exit the station, and it will make a different beeping noise to alert you about this. If your balance is negative, you can’t use your card until you top it up to a positive balance.

To recharge your EasyCard at a machine in the “Easy Card Sales and Top Up” machine in any MRT station, just place your card on the sensor then insert bills. These machines only take TWD 100 bills. When you’re done, take it off the sensor. You can’t top up your card at the single-ride token machine (the one that shows the MRT route map above).

To recharge your EasyCard at the MRT station service window or a convenience store, just hand them the card and cash. Tell them “我要加五百塊”  (I want to add 500 dollars / wo yao jia wubai kuai ) or whatever amount you want to add. These windows will take any bills or even coins.

Topping up EasyCards is cash only . It’s not possible to charge an EasyCard with credit card. To pay for an EasyCard with credit card, buy one on Klook before your trip, but once the TWD 400 runs out, you’ll only be able to reload it with cash.

What’s the Maximum Amount?

The maximum amount you can load onto an EasyCard is TWD 30,000 . Since this is very unlikely for travelers, you don’t have to worry about it.

How Much Discount does the Card Give?

Swiping with an EasyCard is the same price as paying for a single ride on most MRTs and buses. Basically you are paying for convenience, not savings. It’s so much faster to enter an MRT station with EasyCard. Or imagine trying to collect all the exact change for taking a bus when there’s a line of people behind you!

However, EasyCard does give a small discount when transferring (adults TWD 8, concessionaire card holders 4) from a Taipei MRT to a bus (or vice versa) within one hour. You also get a TWD 5 discount when transferring from the MRT to a YouBike.

EasyCard users also get a TWD 20 discount if they swipe to ride Maokong Gondola (weekdays only), or TWD 20 discount if they swipe to enter Taipei Zoo and then to enter Maokong Gondola.

If you use your EasyCard to tide a TRA train, there’s a 10% discount for rides under 70 kilometers.

The Kaohsiung MRT offers a 15% discount to EasyCard users.

Is There an EasyCard App?

Yes, EasyCard has an app called EasyWallet ( Apple / Android ). You can scan the app’s QR code to enter stations.

However, the app is in Mandarin only , and only local citizens or residents (ARC holders) can register for it. Users in Taiwan usually connect their Taiwanese bank account to their EasyWallet app so it will automatically reload money when it runs out.

Where Can I Use EasyCard?

Here’s a list of all the places you can swipe your EasyCard.

Transportation

The inside doors of an MRT in Taipei, with cat stickers on the walls

  • MRT : All of them, including Taoyuan Airport MRT, Taipei MRT, Taichung RT, and Kaohsiung MRT
  • LRT : All of them, including Danhai Light Rail in Tamsui and Kaohsiung Light Rail
  • City buses : All of them across Taiwan. Always swipe when you get on and again when you get off.
  • TRA Trains : only for standing tickets on Local, Tze Chiang, or Chu Kuang Trains. You won’t be guaranteed a seat. Find more info in my guide to train tickets in Taiwan .
  • Ferries : shorter ones, like from Tamsui to Fisherman’s Wharf or Kaohsiung to Cijin Island, but not to other offshore islands in Taiwan
  • Intercity or long-distance buses : Only a few, like buses between Taipei and New Taipei City , most buses within a county, and buses from Sun Moon Lake to Alishan or Chiayi to Alishan .
  • Taxis : Only some have a scanner for swiping EasyCard
  • Parking lots : Only some. Learn more in my guide to driving in Taiwan .
  • YouBike : You need a local phone number to register for an account if you want to use EasyCard to rent a YouBike. You can still rent a YouBike for one-time use with a credit card. Find out how in my YouBike users’ guide .

Other Things

  • Convenience stores : All major ones.
  • Attractions : Only a few, like Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, Maokong Gondola, Taipei Zoo, Hsinchu Zoo, Yehliu Geopark, National Palace Museum, Taipei Fine Arts Museum
  • Street food vendors / night market stalls : only some of them
  • Shop and department stores (only some of them, only for purchases of up to TWD 1000), pearl milk tea shops , supermarkets (watch for EasyCard logo at the till)
  • Click here to see which shops, restaurants, and so on accept EasyCard .

Where Can I NOT use EasyCard?

An orange and white bullet train parked in an underground station beside the platform

  • HSR (High Speed Rail) : It’s possible, but only if you get a co-branded EasyCard / HSR credit card from a Taiwanese bank, and even then, you can only sit in the non-reserved section. For most travelers, you can’t. Just buy a non-reserved ticket at the station, or buy a ticket in advance on Klook , T EXpress app, or the official HSR site. See my guide to booking HSR tickets .
  • TRC (TRA) Trains : You can’t get a seat reservation if you swipe EasyCard to board the train, so you may have to stand. For Taroko Express, Puyuma Express, and Tze Chiang Limited Express EMU3000, you can’t swipe EasyCard because these trains are reserved seats only. See my guide to booking TRC train tickets in Taiwan .
  • Long-distance / intercity buses : Usually for buses between cities, or any bus starting from a bus station or terminal, you’ll need to buy a ticket. You can book some buses online here .
  • YouBike : If you don’t have a local phone number to register, you can’t register your EasyCard for YouBike rental. But you can still do a one-time use with credit card.
  • Most tourist attractions , like Taipei 101 Observatory , Sun Moon Lake Ropeway , Zhang Mei Ama Leisure Farm , Leofoo Village , E-Da Theme Park , and so on.
  • Most street food vendors , night market stalls , small shops , restaurants , and so on. You’ll still need cash for these. Only some take credit cards.

EasyCard vs Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass

A Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass on the left and EasyCard on the right

EasyCard and Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass are totally different passes. EasyCard is what almost everyone uses for swiping onto transportation and other things across Taiwan. It is rechargeable and you keep using it for as long as you want.

Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass ( buy here on Klook ) is a special pass for tourists only. It is only valid for 1, 2, or 3 days, depending which option you choose. The passes gives you unlimited MRT and bus rides in Taipei, New Taipei City , and Keelung only (no Airport MRT and no buses with 4 digits, like the bus to Jiufen). You can also use it for some Taiwan tourist shuttles on certain day trips from Taipei.

The Fun Pass also includes access to 25 attractions in and around Taipei. That may sound great, but the pass is not cheap and you are unlikely to visit all or even most of those attractions.

To find out if it’s worth the money, make a list of all the attractions you will actually visit, and estimate your total MRT rides (multiple by TWD 30), and see if the pass will be cheaper. If you’re in Taipei or traveling around Taiwan for longer than three days, you’ll probably need to also want to buy an EasyCard.

Note that when you activate the Fun Pass (by using it the first time), that day will count as your Day 1, no matter what time you activate it. So try to start it in the morning to get best use of it.

There’s also a Taipei Transportation Fun Pass , which includes transportation only for one day, plus the option to add Maokong Gondola. And then there’s the newer Klook Pass which covers 2-5 attractions only, no transportation, and a more generoud 30 days to use it.

EasyCard Vs. iPass

EasyCard and iPass are the two most common transportation smartcards in Taiwan. EasyCard started as a Taipei MRT card, while iPass started as a Kaohsiung MRT pass.

In the past, EasyCard was the only one accepted in the north, and iPass the only one in the south of Taiwan.

Today, both passes are accepted almost everywhere in Taiwan. However, EasyCard remains the leader island-wide, with more places accepting it than iPass.

Therefore, for most travelers to Taiwan, I recommend EasyCard , unless you plan to live or spend an extended period of time in Kaohsiung.

What is TPass and All Pass?

Taiwan also has a new monthly unlimited transportation pass called TPASS. It will replace the older “All Pass”. TPASS launched in summer 2023 .

There are three TPASS regions: northern, central and southern Taiwan TPASS. The Northern Taiwan TPASS covers Taipei City, New Taipei City , Keelung, and Taoyuan (including Airport MRT) and costs TWD 1200.

The Central Taiwan TPASS covers Taichung, Miaoli , Nantou , and Changhua. It costs TWD 699 for residents of 999 for non-residents.

The Southern Taiwan TPASS covers Tainan , Kaohsiung, and Pingtung . It costs TWD 999.

The passes can be used for unlimited rides on MRTs, LRTs, local buses, a few ferries, trains that don’t require seat reservation (just like EasyCard), and some intercity buses within the region. it is valid for 30 days.

The Taipei All Pass is discontinued . It was a month-long pass which gave unlimited rides on all MRTs, buses, and the first 30 minutes of YouBike rides in Taipei and New Taipei City (Taoyuan Airport MRT was not included). The pass cost TWD 1280. It was discontinued on June 30, 2023.

Can I Get a Refund for my EasyCard?

You cannot get back your TWD 100 deposit . In the past you could, but this is no longer possible.

However, if you have any remaining money on your card (beside the TWD 100 deposit), you can get it refunded at any MRT station service window. You can only refund up to TWD 3000, and a TWD 20 service fee will be deducted.

So if you are leaving Taiwan, just do this at the service desk at the Airport MRT station just after you swipe out from your last ride.

How Can I Check the Balance on my EasyCard?

There are several ways to check your EasyCard’s balance. In Taiwan, it will show the remaining balance anytime you exit an MRT station. You can also check in on one of the machines in the station or at the ticket window.

Online, you can check an EasyCard’s balance here (Mandarin only, but the page is easy enough to navigate).

If I Leave Taiwan, Can I Still Use My EasyCard Next Time?

EasyCards have no expiration date . Even if you leave Taiwan for many years, you can still bring your EasyCard back and continue using it. (I’ve heard about 20 year limit – confirm).

If your card is inactive for two years, you’ll have to reactivate it by adding any amount of money to it.

Why Isn’t My EasyCard Working?

Sometimes, you try to enter a station, and you are pretty sure you have money on your EasyCard, but it won’t let you swipe in. Usually this is because you didn’t swipe out properly the last time you used your card.

All you need to do is go to the MRT service window and tell them the card is not working. They will do some magic, and it will work again.

If you’re already inside the MRT, and it won’t let you leave, just to the same thing. They’ll probably ask you where you started your journey so that they can deduct the appropriate amount.

If you hear some crazy beeping when you enter or exit a station, that’s also usually an indication that something is wrong. Just see the service desk if there’s any problem next time you try to go in or out.

Hi can we use the easycard for travelling from taipei to taichung?

For buses, not. You’ll need to buy a bus ticket at the bus station ticket windows first. For HSR, no. You can’t swipe EasyCard for riding HSR in Taiwan. For regular (TRA) trains, yes, but only certain ones (Local type, Chu Guang, or Tze Chiang – any number except 3000). You won’t have a reserved seat, so if they are full, you’ll need to stand. You can’t use it for reseervation-only trains, which are Puyuma, Taroko, and Tze Chiang 3000.

Is it possible to use Easycard for Tourist Shuttles in Nantou? (Puli-Qingjing-Hehuanshan)

“klook is the only option for credit card charging of EZCard” Then proceeds to mention that you can also do this at EZFly counter. wut?!

Hello. When I arrived in Taipei I bought an Easycard from a stand at the airport near the MTR I think. I was only offered a”cute” card which I don’t like but the lady only offered a choice of 2 childish cards on keyrings. I paid 495$ and she also said I needed a purple token for the train to the city. Why did I need that token if I could have used the Easycard on the train. Your website says Easycard can be used on trains to the airport. I’m very confused. Can you explain please?

Thanks for pointing this out. I’ve fixed it.

It sounds to me like you paid a lot of money for a “cute” and “collectible EasyCard that didn’t even come loaded with any money. And if you didn’t care about the cuteness, that was definitely a rip off, because normal ones only have a TWD 100 deposit, and you can find some other cute ones at 7-11 which only cost a little more, not 495. And what she said doesn’t even make sense – if that was an EasyCard, you should load money onto it in the station and use it to ride the Airport MRT, which 100% takes EasyCard. That makes me think that the thing you bought was maybe not even an EasyCard but just a keychain or something?

Does each person need their own Easy Card or can a family of 3 share 1 card?

Czy 1 kartą Easy Card mogę płacić za przejazd metrem dla trzech osób ?

No, it only works one card per person.

Each person must use their own card. If one card is swiped twice, it will cause it to malfunction and you won’t be able to exit the MRT without taking it to the service desk so they can fix it.

Hi Nick, Thank you for these useful posts. I just like to confirm that I can swipe the Easy Card to get on the MRT Airport train to and from Taipei Main Station without buying a physical ticket.

Thanks, Hung N.

Yes, you can. It works for any MRT in Taiwan (Airport, Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung).

FYI, when seeking to buy an easy card via credit card, I just did that in a family mart. But topping up is still cash only, so not really a game changer or anything.

Thanks, that’s good to know! So I guess you were only able to pay the deposit for the card with credit card, but not actually load any money onto it?

Hello, thanks for the informative post. Please amend the ‘refund’ section to acknowledge that it is extremely difficult to get a refund when you leave. I am at Kaohsiung airport at 11:30 am on a Wednesday, and the only authorised refund counter is closed. You can no longer get a refund at the airport MTR counter.

Thanks for sharing. Do you mean you tried to refund it in the Kaohsiung International Airport MRT station service window and they wouldn’t do it? Or you only tried inside the airport?

hello Nick, I’m Sandy, I want to ask whether there is a discount on easy cards for children and the elderly for foreigners?

All this information is in the article. Children under 6 ride free. Non-resident children above 6 and seniors don’t get a discount and must use adult EasyCard. Children 6-12 can get a “Concessionaire EasyCard” from the MRT station service desk, but it doesn’t give discounted fares, only lower prices on some other things, including a small discount when transferring between two different types of transportation.

Can we use easycard on Citiair bus? Can we buy MRT day pass with easycard? Pls advise. Thx

If you mean the CitiAir bus from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei, no, you need to buy a ticket for that one. You can buy a ticket from the CityAir ticket window at Taoyuan Airport bus station (T1 or T2) or at Taipei City Hall station.

MRT Day pass is a different card than EasyCard. You can’t combine the two.

An EasyCard is a contactless smartcard you can top-up with money and can be used on most types of transportation. Many places also accept EasyCard for purchasing goods.

It is commonly referred to as the ‘yoyo’ card by Taiwanese.

EasyCard Purchase

An EasyCard can be purchased from:

Airport MRT Service Desks

You can purchase these from one of the Taoyuan Airport MRT service booths in either terminal. Visit the following section on the Public Transport page for locations.

You could also order an EasyCard from Klook and pick it up at either airport terminal (see SIM Card Klook section for locations). These can also be purchased with either NT$200 or NT$400 credit included, and you can currently purchase an EasyCard and SIM card together for an extra saving.

Songshan Airport does not have an MRT service booth . However, you can purchase an EasyCard from a machine directly before the MRT turnstiles (see below).

Most MRT stations have machines you can purchase an EasyCard from.

Note that there are also machines used solely for topping up, so make sure you find the ones pictured below

You only need to insert a NT$100 note to purchase one from here, but you’ll need to add credit to use on the MRT. No change is given here so ensure you don’t insert a larger note!

Otherwise, you can purchase them from convenience stores , including:

  • Family Mart

These normally have EasyCards on display near the counter. Just choose your favourite design and pay for it.

[Closed] Hip Vegan Food and Craft Ales at URBN Culture

An EasyCard costs NT$500 (about USD$16), but that includes NT$400 to spend on the card, with the remaining NT$100 non-refundable.

If you purchase an EasyCard from a machine (see above), they will only cost you NT$100 but won’t come pre-filled with any credit.

If you’re in Taipei for an extended period, you could purchase an All Pass . This gives you unlimited travel for 30 days and costs NT$1,280. It can be added to your EasyCard from the top-up machines.

An EasyCard can be topped up at:

Note that you are allowed to go NT$60 in credit on your EasyCard. This is taken from the deposit held on the card.

All MRT stations are equipped with top-up machines.

You simply have to place your EasyCard on the pad, insert your money, and then tap the Next and Confirm buttons on the screen.

Topping up can be done with notes or coins. If you have a lot of loose change, this is a good place to lighten your pockets.

If you only have large notes and need change, you can also top it up at one of the MRT Information Desks (see Refund section below for picture).

An EasyCard cannot be topped up with a credit or debit card.

Convenience Stores are another simple way to top up your EasyCard. Just ask the person behind the counter to add money to your card. You can just point to the money and the card if they don’t speak English and they will understand this.

Any remaining credit on your EasyCard can be refunded at Information Desks within MRT stations. They will only refund up to NT$3,000 and will charge a NT$20 fee.

The initial NT$100 cost of purchasing your EasyCard is now non-refundable

Your best option is simply to spend any remaining credit you have on your EasyCard at a convenience store before you leave.

However, if you still have a lot of credit remaining, you can get a refund at either airport – take it to the Information Desk immediately after exiting the MRT at either airport.

If you’re travelling to Taoyuan airport, you also have the option of refunding the credit on your EasyCard at the Taoyuan Airport MRT service   booth . See the following section on the Taoyuan Airport MRT page for locations and opening hours of the booths at both terminals.

Instead of purchasing an EasyCard, you could get a Taipei Fun Pass.

The Unlimited and Transport variants include free travel on the MRT and City Buses, and also include free use of the Tourist Shuttle Buses (which the EasyCard doesn’t).

The Classic and Exploring Fun Passes can also be used as an EasyCard.

Click here to read more about the Taipei Fun Pass

So, which is better?

  • I would only recommend getting a Transport Fun Pass if you are going to be travelling a lot . The 5 day version is the best value, which works out at NT$147 per day. This equates to about 8 short/medium trips on the MRT with an EasyCard.
  • The Unlimited Fun Pass, which includes travel and free entry to a number of attractions, is definitely worth the money if you plan to visit many of them.

It really does depend on your circumstances, but I hope I’ve given you enough to make an informed choice!

2024 Taiwan EasyCard Guide: Price, Where to Buy & FAQs

On our first trip to Taiwan during spring , we immediately searched for a store or kiosk to buy our EasyCard upon landing at Taoyuan International Airport. Unfortunately, the counters offering the card were already closed since we arrived past midnight.

If only we knew that we could buy this Taiwan transport card ahead, taking into account the store hours, we would have done it to avoid the hassle. So, learn from us – secure your EasyCard before arriving in Taiwan.

BUY TAIWAN EASY CARD

We made this guide for you so you know where to buy and how to use the EasyCard in Taiwan.

What is a Taiwan EasyCard?

Taiwan EasyCard

Often referred to by the locals as the “yoyo card”, an EasyCard in Taiwan is a contactless multifunctional card like the T-Money Card in Korea , Suica Card in Japan , and Octopus Card in Hong Kong . You can top up this card to pay for public transportation including MRTs, buses, and taxis. It has since extended its usage as cashless payment on convenience stores, department stores, and select retailers.

What can EasyCard be used for?

An EasyCard can be used to pay for the following:

1. Public transportation

You can mainly use the EasyCard to pay for your rides on Taiwan’s public transportation such as trains, buses, taxis, public bicycles, ferries, and even for parking. It is accepted as payment on Taipei MRT, Taichung MRT, Taoyuan Airport MRT, Kaohsiung Metro Red and Orange Lines, Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA), and Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR).

2. Convenience stores

You can also use your EasyCard to pay for things you buy from Taiwan’s convenience stores like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, OK, and Hi-Life.

3. Supermarkets and hypermarkets

Aside from convenience stores, you can also use your EasyCard to pay for groceries and items at supermarkets and hypermarkets in Taiwan including Santa Cruz, Simple Mart, and Carrefour, among others.

4. Gift stores

Taiwan EasyCard frequently asked questions (FAQs)

1. how do i top up my easycard.

To reload or top up your EasyCard, you can go to the following:

Option 1: Vending machines and service windows at metro stations

You can look for ticket vending machines at MRT stations to top up your EasyCard. Just follow the instructions on the screen, place your card on the sensor, input your desired top up amount, and insert your cash payment. These ticket machines only accept NT$100 bills.

If you don’t know how to use the machine, you can find service windows at MRT stations in Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, and Kaohsiung and ask the staff to load your card.

Option 2: Convenience stores

Alternatively, you can find the nearest FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, Hi-Life, and OK mart and ask the store attendant to top up your EasyCard with your preferred amount.

2. Can I withdraw money from Taiwan EasyCard?

Unfortunately, your EasyCard is not like a debit card where you can withdraw cash. You can only ask for a refund when your card is deactivated and terminated. Should you wish to terminate your card and have the remaining value withdrawn or refunded, you can go to an EasyCard service center or any Taipei Metro information counter.

3. When will my Taiwan EasyCard expire?

Easy Card front and back

Your EasyCard has no expiry date unless you wish to deactivate or terminate it. Any amount left will still be stored in your card. Be sure to keep your EasyCard in good condition in case you’d travel to Taiwan again.

4. Can I still reuse my EasyCard when I’m back to Taiwan?

Of course! You can still reuse your EasyCard when you travel back to Taiwan. As mentioned earlier, your EasyCard will not expire so feel free to recycle it as many times as you want. Again, just make sure to keep your card in good condition. If the chip is broken or damaged, it may not function properly.

5. How long does Taiwan EasyCard last?

Since your EasyCard does not expire, it will last for as long as the card is still functional or until you decide to return and refund it.

6. Is EasyCard refundable?

The amount you paid for the card itself is not refundable, but you can ask for a refund for the remaining amount in your card. Just go to MRT stations or convenience stores selling EasyCards and the money will be given back to you with a deduction of NT$20 as a service fee.

Are you planning a trip to Taiwan and wondering how to navigate the city’s transportation system? Look no further than the Easycard. This rechargeable smart card allows you to easily and conveniently pay for metro trains, buses, taxis, convenience stores, and even tourist attractions.

In this article, we’ll walk you through the basics of the Easycard system and give you tips on how to use it effectively to make your travels in Taiwan a breeze.

First, let’s understand what the Easycard is and how it works. Essentially, it’s a contactless smart card that you can use to pay for transportation and other services across Taiwan. You can load money onto the card ahead of time and then simply tap it on a card reader to pay for your fare or purchase.

The card can be used on most forms of public transport, including the metro, buses, and even some taxis. Plus, it can be used at convenience stores and tourist attractions, making it a versatile tool for getting around Taiwan.

With the Easycard in hand, you’ll be able to breeze through your travels without worrying about carrying cash or buying individual tickets for each form of transportation you use.

Key Takeaways

  • Easycard is a smart card used for transportation and other services in Taiwan, which can be used on most public transport, convenience stores, and tourist attractions.
  • It allows for transfers between different metro lines and can be used for taxis marked with ‘Easycard Payment Accepted’.
  • Easycard can be purchased for a small fee at convenience stores or MRT stations and offers discounts or free rides after accumulating a certain amount of usage.
  • It can be used for parking, bike rentals, and vending machines, and can also be used as a payment method at restaurants and movie theaters.

Understanding the Easycard System

You’ll want to get familiar with the Easycard system if you’re planning on exploring Taiwan’s bustling cities – it’s the key to getting around efficiently and conveniently.

The Easycard is a rechargeable smart card that can be used on most forms of public transportation in Taiwan, including buses, trains, and the Taipei Metro. It can also be used to pay for parking, bike rentals, and even at some convenience stores and vending machines.

To get an Easycard, simply visit any convenience store or MRT station in Taiwan and purchase one for a small fee (usually around NT$100). Once you have your card, you can add value to it at any convenience store, MRT station, or Easycard kiosk.

travel money card taiwan

The card can hold up to NT$10,000 in value, and each time you use it, the fare will be deducted from the balance on your card. It’s important to note that the Easycard is not just for tourists – many locals use it as well, so you’ll fit right in using this convenient system.

Using the Easycard for Metro Trains

Riding the metro in Taipei is a breeze with the Easycard. Simply tap your card on the sensor at the entrance gate, and you’re good to go. The fare will be automatically deducted from your card balance, and you can ride as many times as you want as long as you have enough credit.

It’s important to note that the Easycard can also be used for transfers between different metro lines. Just tap your card again at the exit gate, and then tap it again at the entrance gate of the next line within 30 minutes to enjoy the transfer discount. This can be especially useful if you’re traveling longer distances or need to change lines to reach your destination.

With the Easycard, navigating Taipei’s metro system has never been easier.

Using the Easycard for Buses

travel money card taiwan

So you want to use your Easycard for buses in Taiwan? Great choice!

The first step is to find the right bus stop and check the route number on the sign.

Once you board the bus, don’t forget to tap your card on the reader near the driver.

And if you need to transfer to another bus, make sure to tap your card again when you get off and board the next bus within an hour to receive the transfer discount.

Finding the Right Bus

To locate the correct bus, simply check the bus number and destination on the electronic board at the bus stop. The board will display the number of the bus, the name of the bus company, and the destination of the bus. Make sure to check the destination carefully, as some buses may have similar numbers but go to different places.

If you’re not sure which bus to take, you can also ask the bus driver or the staff at the bus stop for assistance. They’re usually very helpful and can tell you which bus to take and where to get off.

Once you’ve found the right bus, simply tap your Easycard on the card reader as you board the bus, and again as you get off. Remember to keep your Easycard handy as you may need to tap it again if you transfer to another bus or switch to another mode of transportation.

Tapping Your Card

When you tap your card on the card reader, you’ll feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that you’ve successfully paid for your bus fare. EasyCard’s touch-and-go payment system is incredibly convenient and efficient. Simply hold your card up to the reader until you hear a beep and see a green light, indicating that your payment has been accepted.

It’s important to note that you need to tap your card when entering AND exiting the bus. This ensures that you are charged the correct fare for your journey. If you forget to tap when exiting, you’ll be charged the maximum fare for that particular route.

So, be sure to remember to tap twice and save yourself some money!

Transferring Buses

If you need to switch buses during your journey, don’t forget to tap your card again on the second bus to ensure that you’re charged the correct fare. EasyCard allows for free transfer between buses within a certain time frame, so you only need to pay for the initial fare.

However, if you forget to tap your card again on the second bus, you may be charged the full fare for the entire journey. To transfer between buses, make sure to check the bus route and number to ensure that you’re getting on the correct bus.

Once you get on, tap your card again on the card reader located near the driver. The reader will display the amount deducted from your card, and you can proceed to find a seat. If you’re unsure about which bus to take, you can ask the driver or use a transportation app to check the bus schedule and route.

By tapping your EasyCard on the second bus, you can save money and travel more conveniently around Taiwan.

Using the Easycard for Taxis

If you’re wondering whether you can use your Easycard to pay for a taxi in Taiwan, the answer is yes!

But first, you need to find a taxi that accepts Easycard. Once you find one, simply tap your card on the card reader to pay for your ride. Payment is deducted from your card balance, and tipping is not necessary but appreciated.

Finding Taxis That Accept Easycard

One of the most convenient ways to use your Easycard in Taiwan is by finding taxis that accept it, making getting around the city a breeze. Taxis that accept the Easycard are marked with a sticker that reads ‘Easycard Payment Accepted’ on the windshield or side window.

You can also ask the driver if they accept Easycard before getting in the taxi. If they do not accept it, they may be able to direct you to a nearby taxi that does.

Using Easycard for taxi rides is not only convenient, but also cost-effective. The fare is automatically deducted from your card, so you don’t need to worry about carrying cash or calculating the fare. Plus, using Easycard can also earn you discounts or free rides after accumulating a certain amount of usage.

With the ease and benefits of using Easycard for taxi rides, it’s definitely worth taking the time to find taxis that accept it.

To quickly pay for your taxi ride, simply tap your card on the reader located near the driver’s seat. Here are a few tips to make sure you tap your card correctly and efficiently:

  • Make sure your card is properly loaded with funds before getting into the taxi.
  • Hold your card close to the reader, without actually touching it, until you hear a beep and see a green light indicating a successful transaction.
  • Wait for the driver to confirm the fare amount on the screen before you exit the taxi.
  • Always keep your card in a convenient location, such as a wallet or a phone case, so you can easily access it during your ride.

By following these simple steps, you can easily and quickly pay for your taxi ride with your EasyCard, without the hassle of fumbling for cash or change.

With the convenience and efficiency of the EasyCard, you can enjoy your ride without any worries!

Payment and Tipping

When paying for your taxi ride using your EasyCard, don’t forget to factor in a tip for the driver, as it’s customary and appreciated.

Tipping in Taiwan is not mandatory, but it’s common practice, especially in the service industry. The standard amount for a taxi ride is around 10% of the fare, but you can also round up to the nearest dollar if you prefer.

You can simply tell the driver the total amount you want to pay, including the tip, and they’ll deduct the fare from your EasyCard accordingly.

It’s important to note that EasyCard can also be used to pay for other modes of transportation, such as buses and trains, and the payment process is the same.

When paying for your fare, tap your EasyCard on the reader and wait for the beep to confirm payment. The fare will be deducted from your card balance automatically, and you’ll be able to see the remaining balance on the reader.

Remember to keep your EasyCard topped up to avoid any inconvenience during your travels. By using this convenient payment method, you’ll be able to save time and enjoy a hassle-free transportation experience in Taiwan.

Using the Easycard for Convenience Stores

You can easily use your Easycard to pay for snacks and drinks at convenience stores like 7-Eleven or FamilyMart, simply by tapping your card on the reader at the cash register. This is a great feature of the Easycard because it saves you the hassle of having to carry cash around with you everywhere you go. Plus, it’s a fast and easy way to get what you need without having to wait in line to pay.

Using your Easycard at convenience stores is also convenient because you don’t have to worry about carrying small change around with you. The card automatically deducts the amount you spent from your balance, so you don’t have to worry about counting out coins or bills.

This is especially helpful if you’re in a rush or if you’re trying to catch a bus or train and don’t have time to fumble around with change. So the next time you’re at a convenience store in Taiwan, don’t forget to use your Easycard for a fast and hassle-free transaction.

Using the Easycard for Tourist Attractions

Visiting tourist attractions in Taipei is a breeze with the Easycard. This makes entry to places like the Taipei 101 or National Palace Museum a seamless experience. Simply tap your Easycard on the card reader at the entrance of the attraction and you’re good to go! No need to fumble for cash or wait in long lines just to buy a ticket.

Plus, using the Easycard often offers discounted admission prices to certain attractions. This saves you even more money. But the convenience of the Easycard doesn’t stop there. Some attractions, like the Taipei Zoo or the Maokong Gondola, require additional payments for specific activities or services.

With the Easycard, you can easily load money onto the card and use it to pay for these extra services without having to carry around a lot of cash. Additionally, many attractions offer special discounts or promotions exclusively for Easycard users. So, make sure to check for these deals before your visit.

With the Easycard, exploring Taipei’s tourist attractions has never been easier or more convenient.

Managing Your Easycard

Now that you’ve got your Easycard, it’s important to know how to manage it properly. Checking your balance is easy – just tap your card at any Easycard reader and your remaining balance will be displayed.

If you need to refund your card, you can do so at any service center or convenience store with an Easycard terminal.

If your card is lost or damaged, don’t worry. You can easily replace it at any service center for a small fee.

Checking Your Balance

When using the EasyCard for transportation in Taiwan, it’s crucial to regularly check your balance to ensure you have enough funds for your travels.

To check your balance, simply tap your card on any EasyCard reader machine at any MRT station or convenience store. Your remaining balance will be displayed on the screen, along with the last five transactions made with your card.

If you find that your balance is running low, you can easily top up your card at any convenience store or MRT station. Simply tell the cashier how much you’d like to add to your card and hand over the cash. Your new balance will be reflected on the screen after you tap your card on the reader machine.

By regularly checking your balance and topping up when necessary, you can ensure a hassle-free and convenient transportation experience in Taiwan.

Refunding Your Card

To get your money back from your EasyCard, you’ll need to follow a few simple steps. First, make sure that your card has a balance of less than NT$100. If it has more than that, you’ll need to use up the remaining balance before you can get a refund.

Once your balance is less than NT$100, you can take your EasyCard to any MRT station or convenience store that offers EasyCard services. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Tell the staff that you want to refund your card.
  • Give them your EasyCard and your ID (passport or ARC).
  • Wait for them to process your refund.
  • Collect your cash refund and your ID.
  • Check the amount of your refund to make sure it’s correct.

It’s important to note that there is a handling fee of NT$20 for each refund transaction. This means that if you have multiple EasyCards to refund, you’ll need to pay NT$20 for each one.

Also, refunds can only be made in cash, so make sure you have enough cash on hand to cover the handling fee and the amount of your refund.

Replacing Lost or Damaged Cards

If your EasyCard is lost or damaged, you’ll need to get a replacement card from any MRT station or convenience store that offers EasyCard services. To get a new card, simply approach the service counter and inform the staff that you need a replacement. You will need to provide your personal information, such as your name, ID number, and phone number, and pay an administrative fee of NT$20. The staff will then cancel your old card and issue a new one with the remaining balance transferred to the new card.

To make the process easier, here’s a table that shows the locations where you can get a replacement EasyCard and their contact information:

It’s important to note that replacement cards are only issued for registered EasyCards. If you didn’t register your card, you won’t be able to get a replacement and will have to buy a new one. So, make sure to register your EasyCard as soon as you get it to avoid any inconvenience in the future.

Tips for Using Easycard Effectively

If you want to get the most out of your Easycard, there are a few key tips you should keep in mind.

First of all, using your card regularly can help you save money in the long run.

Additionally, it’s important to be aware of common mistakes that people make when using their Easycard, such as forgetting to tap out when exiting a station.

Finally, don’t forget to take advantage of the many benefits that come with using an Easycard, such as discounts on certain purchases and access to special promotions.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your Easycard makes your transportation experience as smooth and convenient as possible.

Saving Money

You can save cash by using your EasyCard to pay for your daily commute instead of purchasing individual tickets. Here are three ways to save money with your EasyCard:

Get discounts on fares: When you use your EasyCard to pay for your ride, you can get discounts on your fares. For example, if you take the MRT or bus regularly, you can get up to 20% off your fares.

Use the ‘Transfer Discount’ feature: If you transfer between different modes of transportation, such as the MRT and bus, within 30 minutes, you can get a discount on your fare. This feature can save you up to 15% on your total fare.

Get discounts at partner stores: Your EasyCard can also be used as a payment method at partner stores, such as convenience stores, restaurants, and even movie theaters. By using your EasyCard to pay for your purchases, you can get discounts or earn rewards points that can be redeemed later.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

To steer clear of common errors, it’s important to pay close attention to the instructions provided for using the card.

One common mistake that people make is tapping the card twice. This happens when you tap the card again before the transaction has been completed. You’ll know that the transaction is complete when you hear a beep sound and see the amount deducted on the screen. If you tap the card twice, you’ll be charged twice for the same transaction, which can be frustrating and costly.

Another mistake to avoid is forgetting to tap your card when getting off the bus or train. This is important because the fare is calculated based on the distance traveled. If you don’t tap your card when getting off, you’ll be charged the maximum fare for that route.

Also, make sure to tap your card on the correct reader. There are different readers for entering and exiting the station, and for different modes of transportation.

By following these simple instructions, you can avoid common mistakes and make the most out of your EasyCard.

Taking Advantage of Easycard Benefits

Don’t miss out on the perks of having an Easycard! Apart from being a convenient mode of transportation, it also offers discounts and promotions for various stores and attractions in the city. By simply presenting your Easycard, you can avail of these benefits and save money while exploring Taiwan.

To give you an idea of the discounts and promotions available, here’s a table of some of the participating establishments:

Make sure to check the official EasyCard website for the complete list of participating establishments and their respective discounts. Take advantage of these benefits and make the most out of your stay in Taiwan!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the easycard be used for long-distance trains or intercity buses.

Yes, the EasyCard can be used for long-distance trains, but only for certain routes such as the Taiwan Railways Administration’s (TRA) Pingxi Line and Neiwan Line. It cannot be used for high-speed trains or intercity buses.

To use the EasyCard for the TRA, simply tap it at the card reader at the entrance and exit of the station, and the fare will be automatically deducted from your balance. It’s important to note that the EasyCard must have enough balance to cover the full fare of the train ride.

Overall, the EasyCard is a convenient way to pay for transportation in Taiwan, but it’s always best to check if it’s accepted for the specific type of transportation you plan on using.

Is there a limit to the amount of money that can be stored on an Easycard?

Yes, there is a limit to the amount of money that can be stored on an Easycard. The maximum balance that can be stored on the card is NT$10,000.

However, this should be more than enough for most people using the card for transportation purposes. If you find that you need to add more money to your card, you can easily do so at any Easycard top-up station or convenience store.

It’s important to note that the Easycard is not just for transportation, but can also be used for a variety of other purposes such as paying for parking, buying drinks from vending machines, and even shopping at certain stores. So, be sure to keep your card topped up and ready to use for all your daily needs.

What should I do if my Easycard is lost or stolen?

If your Easycard is lost or stolen, the first thing you should do is report it to the nearest convenience store or MRT station. They’ll be able to help you cancel the card and transfer the remaining balance to a new one.

It is also important to remember to register your Easycard online, as this will make the process of canceling and transferring the balance much easier. Additionally, if you’ve registered your Easycard, you may be eligible for a refund on the remaining balance if you’re unable to recover a lost or stolen card.

So don’t wait, report your lost or stolen Easycard as soon as possible to ensure your balance is protected.

Can I use my Easycard to pay for parking or other services?

Yes, you can use your Easycard to pay for parking or other services. The Easycard also functions as an electronic wallet in addition to being a transportation card. Many merchants, including parking lots, convenience stores, and even some restaurants and cinemas accept payment via Easycard. To make a payment, simply tap your card at the designated reader and the payment will be deducted from the balance on your card. It’s a convenient and efficient way to make small purchases without having to carry cash or credit cards. Just remember to keep your card safe and secure since it contains personal information and funds.

(Note: Each complete sentence is on its own line with a double new line after.)

Are there any discounts or promotions available for Easycard users?

If you’re an Easycard user in Taiwan, there are plenty of discounts and promotions available to you. For example, you can get discounts on public transportation fares, such as the MRT and buses.

You can also enjoy discounts at certain retailers and restaurants, such as 7-Eleven and McDonald’s. In addition, there are often promotions and special offers available exclusively to Easycard users, such as free rides or discounts on tourist attractions.

To take advantage of these discounts and promotions, simply present your Easycard when making your purchase or when using public transportation. Keep in mind that some discounts may have specific terms and conditions , so be sure to read the fine print.

Congratulations, you now know how to use Taiwan’s Easycard for convenient transportation! With this card, you can easily and efficiently travel around Taipei and other cities in Taiwan. By understanding the Easycard system, you can make the most out of your travels and save time and money.

When using the Easycard for metro trains, buses, taxis, convenience stores, and tourist attractions, remember to always tap your card when boarding and exiting your transportation. Additionally, it’s important to manage your Easycard by checking your balance and recharging it when needed.

To use Easycard effectively, consider purchasing a stored value card instead of a single-use card and plan your transportation routes ahead of time. By doing so, you can avoid any unnecessary fees and enjoy a smooth and stress-free experience.

Happy travels!

Cash, Changing Money & Credit Cards in Taiwan

Taiwan’s economy is still largely based on cash transactions, especially when compared to places like Australia and South Korea, so visitors should always carry a decent amount of paper currency. The good news is that almost every business can provide change if you pay for a small item with a NT$1,000 note, so there’s no need to hoard coins or NT$100 notes. Because Taiwan is a safer-than-average society , people don’t think twice about carrying around substantial amounts of cash.

Taiwan Post Office

Make sure you’ve enough cash to see you through weekends, as banks are open Monday to Friday only (and closed on national holidays; there’s a list of 2018’s public holidays here) . If you’re going beyond the major cities, do change plenty of money beforehand. Even in heavily-touristed areas like Sun Moon Lake and Greater Alishan changing money can be problematic.

Most Taiwanese citizens have credit cards but seldom use them except in department stores. As far as tourists are concerned, credit cards are useful in major hotels and upscale restaurants and for buying train tickets. Credit cards tend not to be accepted in homestays, and almost never by taxi drivers.

Most of Taiwan’s automatic teller machines (ATMs) give the option of Chinese or English instructions. Cards issued by foreign banks are often – but not always – accepted, so don’t depend on being able to make withdrawals from your account at home. Nor should you bring too much physical money into Taiwan. The limits are US$20,000 in gold or US$10,000 in cash (or the equivalent in travellers’ cheques or other foreign currencies), or NT$60,000 in Taiwanese money. For Chinese currency, no more than RMB20,000 is permitted.

What can you do if, at the end of your trip, you find yourself with leftover NT dollars? Changing it back into British pounds or US dollars at the airport just before departure is straightforward. (While there, sort out any VAT refunds you’re due.) Alternatively, place your coins in one of the charity boxes you’ll notice by the cash register in a convenience store. If you’d like to leave behind a permanent reminder of your visit, you could sponsor an engraved panel inside a temple!

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

For visa-waiver travel, your U.S. passport must be valid through the number of days you intend to stay. Six-month passport validity is not required.

Safety and Security

Potential for Civil Disturbances: Taiwan enjoys a vibrant democracy, and both spontaneous and planned demonstrations occur.  Monitor media coverage of local and regional events and avoid public demonstrations.

Potential for Typhoons and Earthquakes:  During the typhoon season (May through November),  Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau  issues typhoon warnings an average of five times a year (of which, three to four normally make landfall) and heavy rainstorm alerts more frequently. Taiwan also has severe earthquakes. The most recent severe earthquakes included one that caused 2,000 deaths in 1999 and another that caused 117 deaths with widespread damage in 2016.

Disaster Preparedness:

  • Follow the guidance of local authorities in the event of a disaster. See the National Fire Agency’s page for information on “ Disaster Responses .”
  • See the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website  on how to prepare for an emergency.
  • See also the Crisis and  Disaster  Abroad page of the Bureau of Consular Affairs website.
  • When an emergency arises, we will post up-to-date instructions specific to the circumstances of the event on our  website  and send messages to U.S. citizens who have registered through the Department of State’s  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .

Crime:  There is minimal street crime in Taiwan, and violent crime is rare. Take normal safety precautions, such as avoiding travel after dark or in deserted/unfamiliar areas.

See the U.S. Department of State's  and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should contact the American Institute in Taiwan for assistance at +886-2-2162 2000. U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should also seek medical attention and report to the police as soon as possible for help.

  • Dial 113 to reach the Taipei Center for the Prevention of Domestic violence and Sexual Assault.
  • Dial 110 to report crimes to the local police.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

See the U.S. Department of State’s website on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas , as well as AIT’s webpage for  local resources .

  • assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • assist you with emergency needs that arise from the crime, such as finding shelter, food, or clothing.
  • provide information to facilitate access to appropriate medical care.
  • contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • provide a list of local attorneys.
  • provide information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States .
  • explain financial assistance options, such as assistance available to return to the United States.
  • replace a lost or stolen passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence should call 113 for emergency assistance and dial 110 for an island-wide toll-free hotline. Dial 113 to reach the Taipei Center for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may also contact the American Institute in Taiwan for assistance at +886-2-2162 2000.

Domestic violence is considered a crime in Taiwan. Report to police and keep written records of all incidents. Preserve evidence such as medical records documenting injuries, photos of injuries, police records, and damaged clothing and weapons used against you. If you have a court-issued restraining order, present this to the police for use in the arrest of the offender.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:   You are subject to local laws.  If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.

Some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. See  crimes against minors abroad  and the  U.S. Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison authorities to notify the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) immediately.

  • The American Institute can provide a list of English-speaking lawyers .
  • Taiwan authorities typically do not permit foreigners accused of crimes to leave Taiwan while legal proceedings are ongoing.
  • Penalties for illegal drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe, with long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • Taiwan also has the death penalty for certain violent crimes and drug offenses.
  • See the U.S. Department of State’s  webpage  for further information.

Labor Disputes:

  • Avoid labor disputes by establishing all terms and conditions of employment or sponsorship in the labor contract at the beginning of your employment.
  • If the dispute cannot be resolved directly with your employer, the American Institute can provide  a list of English-speaking lawyers .

Customs Regulations:  Taiwan has strict regulations on importing/exporting firearms, antiquities, medications, currency, and ivory. Contact the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington, D.C., or the nearest Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the United States for specific information  regarding customs requirements . See also  customs regulations .

Dual Nationality and Compulsory Military Service:  Taiwan has compulsory military service for Taiwan males between the ages of 18 and 36.  This includes dual U.S.-Taiwan citizens who enter Taiwan on their U.S. passports . Before you travel, contact the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington, D.C., or the nearest Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the United States to determine your military service status.

Faith-Based Travelers:   See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Reports
  • Country Reports on Human Rights Practices
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

Health Screening Process:  To detect and prevent the spread of diseases, Taiwan scans the body temperature of all arriving passengers with an infrared thermal apparatus. Symptomatic passengers are required to fill out a form and may need to give an onsite specimen or see local health authorities. See also the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website .

Judicial Assistance:  Authorities on Taiwan provide judicial assistance in response to letters rogatory from foreign courts in accordance with Taiwan's "Law Governing Extension of Assistance to Foreign Courts." For further information, please go to the  American Institute in Taiwan (AIT)’s website .

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) rights events in Taiwan. Taiwan law prohibits education and employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. On May 24, 2019, Taiwan legalized same sex marriages upon registration with a local household registration office in Taiwan. Same sex marriages from other countries are recognized in Taiwan. LGBTQI+ individuals may still face lack of tolerance, particularly in areas outside the capital and largest city Taipei. See  Section 6 of our Human Rights Practices in the Human Rights Report for Taiwan  and read our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information page .

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  Taiwan law prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities and sets minimum fines for violations. By law, new public buildings, facilities, and transportation equipment must be accessible to persons with disabilities. See  Persons with Disabilities in the Human Rights Report for Taiwan (2022) .

Students: See our  U.S. Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: If you are a woman traveling abroad, please review our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Taiwan has modern medical facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment available at many hospitals and clinics. Physicians are well trained, and many have studied in the United States and speak English. Hospital nursing services provide medication and wound care but generally do not provide the daily patient care functions found in U.S. hospitals. Taiwan requires masks in healthcare facilities and ambulances to prevent the spread of diseases, including COVID-19.

For emergency services in Taiwan, dial 119.

Ambulance services are

  • widely available;
  • have emergency equipment and supplies;
  • and are staffed by trained medical personnel.

We do not pay medical bills . Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Taiwan hospitals and doctors do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare to ensure the medication is legal in Taiwan.

Vaccinations: Be up to date on all routine vaccinations recommended by the U.S. CDC . Vaccinations are available at all major Taiwan hospitals.

Dengue Fever:  In recent years, Taiwan has seen cases of dengue fever, a virus common in subtropical regions that is spread through mosquito bites. There is currently no vaccine or medicine to prevent dengue. Travelers can protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites. For information on how to reduce the risk of contracting dengue, please visit  the U.S. CDC website .

COVID-19: Major Taiwan healthcare facilities have COVID-19 testing capabilities and can administer FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The American Institute in Taiwan does not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Road conditions, lighting, and traffic safety in cities and on major highways are generally good. Roads in major cities are generally congested. Be alert for the many scooters and motorcycles that weave in and out of traffic. Motor scooters are common throughout the island. Be alert for scooters when stepping out of public buses or exiting a car. Exercise caution when crossing streets because many drivers do not respect the pedestrian's right of way. Be especially cautious when driving on mountain roads, which are typically narrow, winding, and poorly banked, and which may be impassable after heavy rains. For example, Taiwan’s central cross-island highway is meandering and often has poor visibility. Exercise caution when driving on highways.

Please see AIT’s website for more details on  Driving in Taiwan .

Traffic Laws:  Passengers in all vehicles, including taxis, are required by law to wear seatbelts. When exiting a vehicle, you are legally required to ensure that no motor scooter, bicycle, or other vehicle is approaching from behind before opening the door. You will be fully liable for any injuries or damages if you fail to do so. Do not turn right on a red traffic signal. It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving without a hands-free kit in Taiwan. The legal limit for alcohol in the bloodstream of drivers in Taiwan is 15 mg per 100 ml of blood (0.03% BAC). This limit is strictly enforced. It is useful to have proof of car insurance and proof of ownership of the vehicle. On-the-spot fines are very common for minor traffic offences in Taiwan and are fixed for each offense. You will be told where to pay the fines and within what period of time. For more serious driving offenses, you will receive a court appearance.

Standard international driving laws apply with a few exceptions:

  • You must have a warning triangle in your car to use if you break down or are involved in an accident.
  • You cannot turn on a red light unless indicated.
  • Many drivers run red lights, especially just after they change.

In an emergency:

  • If you have a problem with your car, call the number on the rental documents or attached to the windscreen of your car.
  • In the event of an accident, you should call the police “110” and medical assistance “119.” Provide the police with all the important information including the type of accident, details of vehicles involved and if there are any injuries or fatalities. The second call you should make is to your insurance company.
  • You will need a police report for your insurance company. While waiting for the police, take photographs of the scene and take the names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses. Do not move the vehicles unless it is necessary for safety reasons.
  • Police will not ask for bribes.
  • Police will ask parties involved in the traffic accident to do an alcohol test. This is standard operating procedure.
  • If riding a motor scooter, you must wear a helmet.

The seaside mountain town scenery in Jiufen, Taiwan

Taiwan offers spectacular views, lively traditions and a culture as luxuriant as Jade Mountain on a sunny day. Whether you're criss-cross ing mountains on colonial-era hiking trails one day or indulging in mouth-watering Taiwanese cuisine, its no wonder this destination is well-loved by travellers everywhere. With so much to wrap your head around, why not save yourself one less stress?

It helps to get savvy about money matters in Taiwan before you go. This post covers everything from how and where to exchange currencies to the average costs of things in Taiwan.

Read on to learn more about spending in Taiwan, including:

  • What currency is used in Taiwan
  • Converting Taiwan currency to Australian dollars
  • Currency exchange in Taiwan
  • How to buy currency before you leave
  • Using bank cards in Taiwan
  • The average costs of things in Taiwan

What Currency is Used in Taiwan

China Currency includes Yuan Renminbi CNY notes

Taiwan’s official currency is the New Taiwan Dollar , often known by the international code TWD and sometimes abbreviated by NT.

Taiwan dollars are available in banknote denominations of of NT$100, NT$500, and NT$1,000. There are also NT$200 and NT$2,000 notes, though they are seldom used.

Coins in circulation include NT$1, NT$5, NT$10, and NT$50, along with a NT$20 piece that is not commonly used.

Currency Converter for New Taiwan Dollars

The New Taiwan Dollar (TWD) is relatively stable to the Australian dollar (AUD) and the New Zealand dollar. Converting AUD to TWD is easy with our currency conversion tool.

Simply enter in the value and currencies to figure out how much it would cost you to buy New Taiwan Dollar with S Money today. We use the same mid-market rate you’d find on Google or XE.com.

How to Exchange Currency in Taiwan

Famous Tower and dragon and tiger, taiwan

While plastic payments are a growing practice in Taiwan, it is still convenient to have cash on hand when you're shopping at certain areas or smaller shops.

There are lots of ATMs for your currency in China

ATMs in Taiwan

You’ll find ATM machines at the airport, convenience stores and on every major street in Taiwan. When you’re in need of local dollars, head to your nearest ATM and make your cash withdrawals in local New Taiwan Dollars using international credit cards like Visa and Mastercard.

Important note : Don’t forget to inform your bank of your travel plans before you leave home! If you don’t and the bank detects transactions from Taiwan, they could deem it suspicious activity and freeze your card.

Currency Exchange in Taiwan

It’s possible to exchange major foreign currencies at airports, banks, shopping malls or hotels.

With standardised exchange charges and official rates used almost everywhere, there’s little reason to shop around, although banks often provide marginally better deals than hotels. At the banks, you will need to pay a flat NT$30.00 service fee which is very reasonable for changing currency in Taiwan.

In Taipei cities, banks are usually open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Travellers Cheques

Traveller’s cheques offer some security, especially for long-term travel, and can be changed in major hotels and banks. But with ATMs, digital mobile payments, and money changers making currency exchange easy, there’s little need for traveller’s cheques today.

Buying New Taiwan Dollars Before You Go

There’s some reassurance that comes with having Taiwan currency almost as soon as you leave the airport, whether it’s to pay for public transport or a taxi.

Fortunately, you can get local Taiwan currency in advance from home by:

  • Ordering it online for delivery or pick-up.
  • Buying it from a local bureau de change.
  • Buying it at the airport before you fly.

Australian airport bureaus de change are notorious for having some of the worst rates in the world so they’re best left alone.

If you’re busy, ordering online is a good idea - and often means you’ll get the best rates as well. For example, S Money offers the same rate listed on Google and XE.com .

You can also enjoy the added advantage of not having to leave your home as the currency can be delivered to your door!

Using Your Bank Card in Taiwan

In major cities like Taipei, foreign bank cards are accepted more easily, although their use is normally limited to most major hotels, department stores, and upmarket restaurants and bars. Some of the  best travel money cards  include debit, credit and prepaid cards.

You’ll also find that Mastercard and Visa are more popular in Taiwan than American Express, but you can still pay with your Amex card in some places or use an ATM.

Alternatives to cash are growing steadily in Taiwan, with bank cards increasingly accepted in tourist hotspots and big cities.

But there are parts of Taiwan that still use cash, and even in places that cater to plastic payments, there may be restrictions on your foreign card. So it’s still important to have enough cash on you as a backup.

Debit Cards

Using your debit card in Taiwan may be convenient but some cards charge exorbitant fees for international transactions so you’ll want to do your research before you go.

It’s common for Australian banks to charge currency conversion fees on each foreign transaction as well as charges for ATM withdrawals.

To make your trip hassle-free, look for a bank card that’s designed for frequent travellers. Some travel-friendly debit cards that waive a portion of the charges include Wise , ING , Citibank and Revolut .

You can use your debit card for currency in China

Credit Cards

Major hotels and department stores in Taiwan may accept major credit cards , especially Visa or Mastercard.

Some credit cards come with attractive features for frequent travellers, including complimentary travel insurance, rewards points, and additional security measures.

But the perks are countered by some exorbitant charges if you use your card overseas, including:

  • International transaction fees
  • High exchange rate margins
  • Potential ‘cash advance fees’ if you use an ATM

As with debit cards, there are some exceptions. Bankwest Platinum and 28 Degrees cards are designed for travellers and waive the currency conversion fees.

Prepaid Travel Cards

Prepaid travel cards offer some enticing benefits, such as the ability to lock in a favourable exchange rate and make payments without currency conversion fees. You’ll also receive a back-up card in case the main card is lost or stolen.

Even though they are convenient, you could end up with hidden fees. Some travel cards still impose the following:

  • Currency conversion fees
  • Uncompetitive exchange rates
  • International ATM withdrawal fees
  • Reload fees
  • Inactivity fees

Are you planning a trip to Taiwan and wondering if your credit card will be accepted there? Indeed, whether or not your credit card will be accepted overseas can be a central concern for many travellers about to embark on an international trip. After all, not all countries have the same level of credit card acceptance, so it's very helpful to understand credit card acceptance policies and trends before you travel.

But what about Taiwan? Can you use your credit card there? The short answer is yes , you can use your credit card in Taiwan. Credit cards are widely-used across Taiwan and are a popular means of payment in shops, restaurants, and other commercial establishments.

Wise is a great alternative to credit cards when travelling to Taiwan, offering competitive exchange rates, low fees, and real-time spending notifications.

Whether you're planning a trip to Taiwan or simply curious about credit card acceptance policies in different parts of the world, this article is for you. We'll look at credit card acceptance in Taiwan and cover the payment methods that are commonly accepted, as well as any fees that you may incur for each.

Yes, pretty much all shops, businesses, hotels, restaurants, and other commercial establishments in Taiwan will readily accept credit card payments — making it a great way to spend your money in Taiwan.

Although cash is also common in Taiwan, credit and debit cards issued by major global providers like VISA and Mastercard are commonly accepted thoughout the country. If your card is issued by American Express, Diner's Club, Discovery, or another card company, there's a good chance they'll also be accepted in Taiwan, but we recommend checking with your bank or card provider directly to make sure that New Taiwan dollar currency conversion is indeed supported, and that card machines and ATMs in Taiwan commonly support cards of this type.

How to Use Credit Cards in Taiwan

Using your credit card in Taiwan works just like it does in your home country. In general, you'll simply need to do the following to use your card to make a payment:

  • Confirm your transaction amount,
  • Tap (or insert or swipe) your credit card,
  • Enter your PIN if prompted,
  • Wait for the payment to be authorised and for the receipt to print.

In general, we recommend keeping your receipt for your records and reconciling your credit card statement. It can sometimes be interesting to see how much you paid in a foreign currency versus the amount that was debited in your home currency. As we'll see in the next section, the percentage difference can sometimes be very high!

Cost of Using Credit Cards in Taiwan

Every time you pay with your credit card in a foreign currency like the New Taiwan dollar, you'll be charged several fees before the final amount is reflected on your card statement. These fees are charged by the following parties:

  • Your credit card company (VISA, Mastercard, etc.),
  • Your bank or credit card provider,
  • The ATM network (if you're withdrawing cash).

Here are the average ranges of these various fees when making dollar credit card payments in Taiwan:

Overall, unless your credit card is specially geared towards international spending and doesn't charge foreign currency exchange fees, using credit cards to pay in Taiwan is normally rather pricey due to the multiple fees and charges racked up along the way. As always, though, we recommend checking with your individual card provider or bank to see for yourself which fees you'll be charged for spending in Taiwan.

Alternatives to Credit Cards in Taiwan

A cheaper alternative to using a credit card for travelling to Taiwan is a prepaid travel debit card.

Just like credit cards, prepaid debit cards (which are also normally issued by VISA or Mastercard) provide an excellent way to pay while visiting Taiwan, the main difference being that you normally pay lower fees and exchange rates . Depending on where you live, you'll probably have options from your bank or a third-party provider to use a commission-free debit card or a multi-currency card which can help you dodge high New Taiwan dollar conversion costs, including DCCs .

According to our analysis of dozens of providers, the top two options for travelling to Taiwan, in general, are the following:

Wise Account

The Wise Account is another great option for paying in New Taiwan dollar. It gives you the lowest possible currency exchange rates with complete transparency and no hidden fees. It also allows you to hold and manage over 50 currencies in one account and provides fast and secure cross-border money transfers at a fraction of the cost of traditional banks.

FAQ About Credit Cards in Taiwan

Yes, pretty much all shops, restaurants, businesses, and commercial establishments in Taiwan do accept credit cards. However, we recommend checking with the vendor beforehand to ensure that they accept your specific type of credit card.

Credit cards from major card companies like VISA, Mastercard, and American Express are generally always accepted in Taiwan. However, it's important to remember that acceptance may vary depending on the individual business, so checking in advance is a good idea.

Unless your credit card is designed for international spending, it's likely that you'll incur exchange rate margins and currency conversion fees when using your credit card in Taiwan. In general, these fees range from 2.5% to 5% per transaction, so it's not negligible! To save money, we recommend using a travel debit card like Wise to avoid hidden fees altogether.

Both are commonly-accepted forms of payment in Taiwan, so it depends on your preference and the specific circumstances. Credit cards can be a convenient and safe way to make purchases, but having cash on hand is always a good idea, especially if you plan to visit less touristy areas. Moreover, some businesses prefer that customers pay with cash to avoid the processing fees of card transactions.

You must report your lost or stolen credit card to your bank or credit card provider immediately. They can help you cancel the card and issue a replacement. Additionally, having a backup credit card or cash in emergencies is also a good idea for moments like these.

How does a prepaid travel card work?

Order a prepaid travel card online, through a provider app , or - in some cases - pick one up at a physical location or store. Generally to get your card you’ll need to show or upload some ID documents for verification - this is to keep your account safe and is a legal requirement.

Once you have your card account open , you can load funds . Different cards have their own supported methods for topping up, which usually include bank transfer, PayID, credit and debit card, and which may also allow you to deposit cash in some cases. Once you have funds on your card, you can switch to the currency you need for overseas spending. In some cases you can also leave your funds in AUD and just allow the card to convert for you - but do check that no additional fees will apply in this case.

Prepaid travel cards can then be used to tap and pay , make withdrawals and shop online . You can often also add them to mobile wallets like Apple Pay for convenient spending. Because your card isn’t attached to your everyday account it’s secure, and you can only spend the funds you’ve loaded, which means there’s no chance of accidentally blowing your budget.

Advantages and disadvantages of prepaid cards

Prepaid cards can be a handy addition when you’re abroad, as they are secure and convenient to use for payments and withdrawals. However, they’re not the only option. If you’re not sure about whether a prepaid card is right for you, check out these advantages and disadvantages to help you decide:

Advantages:

  • More convenient than carrying cash, with easy access to ATMs to withdraw when you need to
  • Not linked to your primary day to day account, which can be more secure and make budgeting easier
  • Some accounts let you buy currency in advance to lock in exchange rates when they’re good
  • You may be able to access better exchange rates and lower fees compared to using a regular bank card

Disadvantages:

  • Some prepaid cards have fairly high fees - including charges when you add money to the account. Read more on how to find the best travel cards with no foreign transaction fees
  • Not all prepaid cards support a broad range of currencies - check the currencies you need are covered
  • Prepaid cards aren’t always accepted for things like paying security deposits - so it’s safest to have a credit card as well

Who is a prepaid debit card for?

A prepaid debit card is handy for many different customer needs. For example, you may choose a prepaid debit card in the following situations:

  • You’re planning travel and want to set your budget in advance with no chance of accidentally overspending
  • You want to be able to hold and exchange a selection of foreign currencies all in the same account
  • You want to increase security by using a payment card that’s not linked to your main everyday account when you travel
  • Some cards also offer other perks like ways to receive foreign currency payments conveniently, or cashback

How can I get a prepaid travel card?

Different prepaid cards have their own order and activation processes. However, to comply with local and international law, providers will usually need to see some ID before you’re able to get a card - this verification step may be available online by uploading images of your paperwork, or in person by visiting a branch.

Here’s an outline of the basic steps you’ll take to get a prepaid travel card:

  • Pick the right card for your needs
  • Visit the provider’s website or app - or call into a branch if you’d prefer a face to face service
  • Complete a travel card order from, which will include your personal information
  • Get verified - usually this involves showing or uploading ID like a passport or driving licence
  • Add money to your card, which could be in cash, with a bank card, or by bank transfer
  • You can now get your card, and manage your account online or in the app

If you’re ordering a card in person you’ll be able to start using it right away. If you’ve ordered online for delivery, you’ll need to wait a few days, to a couple of weeks, depending on the provider you’ve picked, for your card to be available. You might be able to access virtual card details in the meantime, to start spending right away.

How to choose a prepaid debit card

There are many different prepaid debit cards on the Australian market - so picking the best one for you will require a bit of research. Starting with this guide, compare a few different prepaid debit cards based on features and fees. Here are a few pointers to think about:

  • Make sure you know about any opening or card delivery fee which will apply once you order your card
  • Check how long it’ll take to get your card if you’re ordering online for home delivery
  • Make sure the card you pick can hold a broad selection of currencies, so you can use it for more than one trip away
  • Check the fees for adding funds, making ATM withdrawals and converting currencies
  • Look to see if there are any account close, cash out or dormancy fees that apply once you stop using the card
  • Make sure the card is well rated by other users, and from a trustworthy provider

Where can I get a prepaid debit card?

Generally you can order your prepaid debit card online or by downloading your preferred provider’s app. Some cards, like the Auspost card, can also be collected in physical branch locations.
