How long do i need to transfer between gatwick and heathrow.

Gatwick and Heathrow are the busiest airports in the United Kingdom. In 2019, over 126 million passengers were serv e d by the two London hubs. The pair connect passengers to many key destinations across the globe. However, travelers often find themselves having to transfer between them during their journeys. How long is needed to travel between the airports?

Across the city

Heathrow is in the London Borough of Hillingdon, which is right on the west boundary of Greater London. Meanwhile, Gatwick is in the West Sussex town of Crawley, which is 29.5 miles (47.5 km) south of Central London. Therefore, with both airports situated in different counties surrounding the UK's capital, the right planning needs to be done to ensure a smooth journey between the two.

London is by far the most populous city in Western Europe, with a population of over nine million people. Moreover, there are people from several other nearby counties that pass through the airports. So, amid possible congestion and delays, passengers need to allow for enough time to make the cross-city journey.

Heathrow advises the following on its website:

"Allow plenty of time! As well as journey times quoted here you’ll need to factor in things like passport control, baggage reclaim, waiting for buses, check-in, airport security and maybe taking a break."

There are several ways to hop between Gatwick and Heathrow. Depending on passenger requirements, there are plenty of public and private options, all offering different journey times.

Hit the road

Traveling by car between the two airports is often the most seamless way, especially if a passenger has a lot of luggage. The distance by road is approximately 42 miles (68km). The preferred route between the two is via the M25 motorway. This journey can take 50 to 60 minutes to complete if there is minimal traffic.

There may be extra congestion on the roads in the late afternoon and early evening on weekdays. Additionally, the area around Heathrow can become ridden with traffic on Sunday evenings.

There is a way to cut out a bulk of the motorway journey to have a scenic route through some inner London boroughs. If individual travelers have some time on their hands, this option might interest those looking to see some sights on the way. However, if in a rush, traffic on this waypoint can be horrendous, especially on a Friday night!

There are nonetheless plenty of taxis at the airports to serve passengers. Alternatively, travelers can book rides on apps such as Uber. Regardless, booking a cab in advance can help reduce the cost of the journey significantly. There are private transfer companies that charge either side of £60 ($79).

Cross the tracks

When taking the train or tube, the most efficient routes are via Central London. Gatwick Express is a nonstop option between Gatwick and London Victoria. The cost of a standard single ticket on this train is £17.70 ($23.45) and usually takes half an hour.

However, this is only one part of the journey. After arriving at Victoria, commuters have to make their way through London to get to Heathrow . One option to make up the rest of the journey is to take the Underground all the way to Heathrow, which takes 50 minutes. The one-way cost of this trip is £4.80 ($6.30) and requires switching along the way.

A slightly quicker option is to take the tube to London Paddington and transfer there to get on the Heathrow Express to Heathrow. This route will cost £27 ($35.40). Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get to Central London from Heathrow. However, it isn't so cost-efficient if connecting with Gatwick as a tube is also needed along the way. Yet, there is also another option to take the TfL Rail from Paddington, which takes 15 minutes longer than the Heathrow Express, but at a fraction of the price.

There are several famous attractions within 20 minutes of most connecting points. Westminster Abbey, London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, and Trafalgar Square are just some of the popular sights that are in close proximity to stations that travelers will pass through when switching.

However, anyone that is right for time should bear in mind that there are often delays when it comes to trains in and out of London . It can also take several minutes to walk to the station from the airport. So, just in case of lateness, it's advisable to add on a buffer of around an hour.

Catching the bus

For those on a budget, there is a bus that can be taken between East Croydon and Heathrow, which only costs £1.50 with an Oyster Card or contactless bank card. A standard single train ticket from Gatwick to East Croydon can cost as little as £5.60, and the journey can take 15 minutes to complete. However, the X26 bus trip from East Croydon to Heathrow can 80 to 130 minutes.

Nonetheless, this method is one of the cheapest ways to travel between the two hubs on public transport. There also are several other public buses that can help passengers on their way, but these routes are all heavily time-consuming.

Coach service enterprises provide the most balanced bus options. National Express used to offer direct coaches between Heathrow and Gatwick up to six times an hour, which took 65 minutes. However, this route was scrapped earlier this year. At the moment, passengers, have to transfer coaches in Victoria. Megabus offers options between the two hubs and its operators only charge as little as £16.50 ($21.60) currently. The journey can take as little as around 60 minutes. However, while the company reshuffles amid the global health crisis, options are currently limited.

Altogether, Heathrow advises arriving at the airport three hours prior to departure for long-haul flights and two hours before departure for UK and European flights . So, whichever method one decides to use to transfer, it's always best to keep this recommendation in mind.

How to Get From Heathrow to Gatwick: The Complete Guide

travel time gatwick to london

 TripSavvy / Evan Polenghi

If you're traveling to London, you'll likely pass through either Heathrow or Gatwick airport at some point during your trip. If you need to travel between the two airports (you may be using London as a jumping-off point to explore more of Europe , or you might have scored a long-haul bargain by booking split tickets via different airlines), we've put together a handy guide to make your transfer as easy as possible, including a budget option that'll set you back less than 5 pounds.

Heathrow to Gatwick: The Basics

Located 15 miles west of London, Heathrow (LHR) is one of the world's busiest international airports. All five terminals are connected to central London via the London Underground. Gatwick Airport (LGW) is around 30 miles to the south of London and is the U.K.'s second largest airport. An efficient monorail service links the two terminals (north and south), and the airport is connected to central London by train.

The airports are around 38 miles apart. There is no direct rail service that connects Heathrow and Gatwick. To travel by train, you need to go via central London.

If you're booking connecting flights that arrive at Heathrow and depart from Gatwick (or vice versa), you'll need to remember that they're the U.K.'s biggest and busiest airports. As such, you'll need to factor in sufficient time to allow for potential delays regarding security checks, check-in, customs, and baggage collection, in addition to the transfer journey time itself. Always play it safe when booking flight connections by allowing more time than you think you'll need or consider an overnight stay, especially when booking separate flights via different airlines (neither the airline nor the transfer operator is responsible for a missed connection, and you may be required to secure a new ticket if you miss a flight). Note that if you're booking connecting flights via the same airline, you're covered if you fail to make a connection and will be booked onto the next available flight.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Taxi

Black Taxi Cabs are available in taxi ranks outside all Heathrow terminals and will transport passengers to Gatwick. The journey should take around 45 minutes (depending on traffic). Note you may need to wait in line for a long time at peak times. The fare is likely to be more than 100 pounds one way. Black cabs can carry up to five passengers but don't forget to take luggage into account. When booking through Black Cab London , you can quickly request a wheelchair-accessible cab by checking the "Yes" box under "Wheelchair Access" and providing the dimensions of your wheelchair or mobility aid.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Bus

The only direct route via public transport is by bus. The National Express Coach Service takes around 75 minutes (depending on traffic) and runs up to five times an hour around the clock. Fares start at 20 pounds one way if you book tickets in advance for a specific departure time. Coaches are wheelchair accessible, and comprehensive details on all available accommodations can be found on their website . While not required, National Express Coach Service does recommend contacting them 36 hours in advance to confirm the availability of all accessible travel arrangements. You can pay extra to board any available coach up to 12 hours before or after your original departure time. The luggage allowance is two 20-kilogram suitcases and an item of hand luggage per person. Note that you'll need to factor in a 15-minute walk to the bus station from Heathrow Terminals 1 and 3. Megabus also operates between Gatwick South Terminal and Heathrow Terminal 5. Traveling between the airports takes an hour and 15 minutes, and there is free Wi-Fi, a 20-kilogram luggage allowance, and charging points. Tickets start at 15.75 pounds. While coaches are wheelchair accessible but not accessible for mobility scooter users unless you can climb a few stairs to board the coach and will be okay with having your mobility device stored with luggage below. Megabus requests travelers contact them before purchasing any tickets to confirm the availability of any necessary accommodations first.

Low-cost carrier easyJet operates a  bus service  from Heathrow and Gatwick to central London (not between the airports, though, unfortunately). The cheapest and easiest way to use this service is to take the tube from Heathrow (any terminal) to Earls Court (the journey takes around 35 minutes) and then connect to the easyBus from Earls Court to Gatwick Airport North Terminal (the journey takes about 65 minutes). The trip could set you back as little as 3.50 pounds (based on a 2 pound easyBus advance fare and a 1.50 pound off-peak Oyster fare).

Heathrow to Gatwick by Train

There's no direct train service between the airports, but you can travel via rail and tube through central London.

You can travel by Heathrow Express to Paddington (a 15-minute journey from terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5). From Paddington, you can board the Circle Line to Victoria Station (a 15-minute trip) and connect to Gatwick via the Gatwick Express (a 30-minute journey). The whole journey costs around 40 pounds one way.

Or you can travel by tube from Heathrow (all terminals) to Green Park (a 45-minute journey) and then from Green Park to Victoria (a two-minute trip). From Victoria, you can connect to Gatwick via the Gatwick Express (a 30-minute journey). The whole journey costs around 20 pounds one way. Sometimes the Gatwick Express isn't running (such as on Boxing Day), so you will have to find alternative transportation.

Both routes offer step-free access—something to consider if you have mobility issues, a lot of luggage, or are traveling with children.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Private Car Service

You could consider pre-booking a private car service to avoid waiting in line for a Black Cab at the airport. Most companies also offer a discount if you make a booking in advance. The journey should take around 45 minutes (depending on traffic) and cost about 55 pounds one way.

Heathrow and Gatwick are around 38 miles apart from each other. No direct rail service connects the two, which means that travelers must connect via central London.

A taxi takes around 45 minutes, while the National Express Coach Service takes around 75 minutes, depending on traffic.

A taxi trip from Gatwick to Heathrow is a pricy one, likely to cost more than 100 pounds depending on traffic and time of day.

Top 5 airlines flying to gatwick.

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

at the time for boarding the lady just call Group A and no other goups and everybody from A to F go inside without the right turn, and when we get in theres no more spsce for carry on , the ones that get in at not correct group from the back occupy our space !!!!! a mess !!!!

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Everything was good except for deplaning in NY. Took way too long!!

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

No complaints. The flight was uneventful, which is a good thing.

Was flying in premium eco and there were around 5-6 movies I wanted to watch and none of those could I play for some reasons. Not just me we checked w the person sitting next to me. Few of the movies were only playable :( Also that was not great that we couldn't upgrade to business however tried to, many times before the flight :(

You cancelled my flight by email then made it very difficult to get in contact with you. Then put me in a flight with a long layover in Mexico returning to the wrong airport in uk. Mind blowing my stressful. I missed see my grand dad because of you.

This was not the BA business class it used to be. Mediocre food, attendants seemed stretched thin. All the little luxuries that used to make BA business fun were missing. Flight delayed and the explanation given was they forgot to pick up crew - I hope I misheard! Transfer in LHR “sticky” - we thought we had way too much time at 3hours but it was needed. Next time will try different route.

Always getting updates by email very easy to check in on line. There was plenty of checking in staff to get you all through. It was nice that the flight attendants took time to talk to you and were interested in your holiday.

Flight from Phoenix to London was very quiet. Excellent space available for comfort, couldn't fault

Food was very average. And top up drinks offer was absent. For a 11 hour long flight that should be the minimum. The crew didn't want to be there. I understand it was new year day but given they had signed up for it

It was my fault choosing the seat nearest the entrance but it was ok.

It was good, the staff was friendly and it was a typical flight to Europe.

My flight was a little marred by poorly fuctioning / loose headphone sockets meaning I had to move twice. The meals were good and the staff are always amazing, attentive and friendly. My bag was lost on my previos trip with BA for 15 days of my 18 day trip, however I experienced no such issues this time despite my fears. Overall ok but aircraft need better looking after.

I will never fly this airline again. Checking in was poor , we had to go back to the check in counter at Raleigh - Durham international airport three times because they didn’t issue my boarding pass but rather duplicated my husband’s twice which caused a big headache at the passport control at the airport which triggered security alert and wouldn’t let us pass through we we had to wait for long time to be able to explain and clear everything after talking to the supervisor.. No food on the plane , not even crackers. No food was offered to buy ether . No ear phone was provided . Very little time to make from one plane to another and nobody to assist with smooth transition. Flight itself , we felt safe so thank you to the pilots . But customer service was terrible . We spent $ 2500 on 2 tickets, so I cannot say that service was consistent with the price .

Seats are way too much now with these new airplanes especially long flights like we had. I was 7 month pregnant and in a lot of discomfort due to small seats.

Food was horrible. This wasn’t business class. No leg space, can’t sleep in row position, huge delay

I liked how easy my transfers between flights in Keflavik were. I would have appreciated more food options in Keflavik.

The plane was flaming hot! Could not breathe. Everyone coughing from heat. Awful.

My biggest problem was the flight from KEF to DUB was delayed, which caused me to miss my connecting flight in DUB and we were forced into an unplanned 10-hour layover in DUB. Crew and boarding staff were all very friendly but this was a real inconvenience and especially uncomfortable for my disabled wife.

Not much! This was my first flight with Iceland air and unfortunately it wasn’t what I have expected. My luggage is lost nothing as of yet where it was left. Not a good service at all!!

The seat size was more like a domestic than an international flight. In fact, i would compare the ammenities, quality and service to a short hall ryan air flight, which was unexpected for an international flight. The plane was extremely hot so sleeping was difficult. My biggest complaint was that they are very strict on carry on luggage only allowing it to weigh 10kg/22lb. I try to limit myself to a carryon so i don't have to mess with bagage claim, but the wieght restriction made it impossible. I have never had a carry on weight restriction (at least enforced) on an international flight. Will not be including them in future searches.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

Fare was much lower with a layover in London as I was able avoid numerous landing fees that would have been added to the ticket price had I booked a direct flight to Amsterdam.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.

Quick boarding Clean aircraft Departure delayed but landed early Evening wrap was very good, breakfast was okay.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

We were kept waiting at the gate for 2 hours without explanation

The crew on this flight were attentive, efficient and friendly. It really made for an enjoyable flight.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

I loved the ability to upgrade my seat which was worth it. The large seat and ability to recline made it comfortable to fall asleep. My only two complaints were entertainment (movie selections were old) and approx 30 mins before landing the crew started to collect the blankets despite the cabin air temperature remaining cold. Maybe wait for passengers to get off the plane before collecting the blankets.

Excellent! Although it stinks to pay extra for leg room and then have no screen option.

Very much dislike: Airline requires check-in at the Airport Airline does not work with TSA PreCheck

Overall a great experience. Only complaint was the movie selection was pretty limited, but that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things and easy to overcome.

The crew was unfriendly front check-in. The filth in the plane was so disappointing. I could smell dirt and looked up and there was literally dirt that was blowing in through the air. Old food on the seat back tray in front of me so I didn’t use it. No toilet paper in the bathroom and scum/old dirt next to the seats.

No blanket pillow headphones, not even a water or snack makes for a very uncomfortable flight. There are too many extra fees that should be basic and standard included.

There was no communication about the check-in process, even the fact that Norse doesn’t do online check-in! And once we were at the Los Angeles airport (LAX), there was no signage or assistance about where to check in. I kept Googling for 3rd party information until I finally found on the airport website that we had to check in at Terminal 1 and be bussed back to Terminal B, the international terminal. How were we supposed to know that?! Otherwise, the flight itself was comfortable and the attendants were helpful and friendly. I just feel like we were lucky to have managed the check-in and boarding process on our own - why keep it a secret??

The flight was comfortable, smooth, hardly any bumps even though we encountered some jetstream. The onboard entertainment could be jazzed up a little, the TV shows were old ans not much variety. The movies we ok. The staff was pleasant. The Orlando ground crew was excellent, they were pleasantand friendly. My kids and I were seated separately but the Orlando crew was able to reassign us together. The ground crew at Gatwick, UK need some work on attitude, they were not so sociable. All in all wonderful flight to and from England. I will be definitely traveling with Norse again. Ps...Norse need to work on an app for both Android and iOS.

Crew at airport who completed boarding were incredibly and blatantly rude and unhelpful. 0/10 customer service. I was going to upgrade my seat to first class and upon asking, I was met with an awful attitude so I changed my mind.

Boarding was a disaster. 2 hours in line to get boarding passes and we had no luggage to check in. Coffee was $4 so is water. 11 and a half hour’s flight and food was not included. You could purchase the food but it was complete garbage, This is worse than spirit airline. Never again

Air Peace denies abandoning passenger at Gatwick Airport

Air Peace insists the passenger arrived the airport very late after check-in phase was concluded.

The management of Air Peace has denied claims that it abandoned a passenger and closed its counter for its Gatwick to Lagos flight on Monday.

Stanley Olisa , Corporate Communications Lead of the airline, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to Olisa, the airline's explanation became necessary after a video surfaced on social media alleging that it abandoned a Lagos bound passenger at Gatwick Airport.

"The video has claimed that the airline closed its counter before closing time because the aircraft was over booked on the London to Lagos flight, which is false."

Olisa said that the video was misleading, malicious and an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the airline.

He explained that the passenger arrived the airport very late after check-in phase was concluded and the counter closed according to the approved time of the airport management.

"Gatwick Airport operates by slot timings allocated to each of the airlines operating out of this airport. The check-in operations of airlines are slot-based, and airlines take turns based on their approved times.

"Once your slot timing is up, you must vacate the counters for the next airline's utilisation. The check-in process ends at 9:00 am as advised in the Terms and Conditions section of our e-ticket and website, and the counter was vacated by Air Peace in accordance with our slot allocation at 9:55 am.

"To ensure passengers do not miss their flights, we send them multiple messages at different times before their flight, 24 hours, 14 hours and 6 hours before flight departure.

"Departure for this flight was scheduled for 11:10 am, so all processes needed to adhere to this time," he clarified.

He further said that contrary to the claim in the video, the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority could attest to the number of passengers on the manifest for the said flight.

He said that the aircraft left Gatwick with some seats unoccupied, and so, no overbooking took place.

"Gatwick Airport has CCTV coverage showing the time the passenger arrived at the airport and Air Peace counter and the time the maker of this video got to the airport.

"The late arriving passenger duly paid the no show fee, was booked to travel on a subsequent flight, and therefore the issue was resolved at the airport."

Olisa expressed displeasure that a different version of what transpired had been circulating social media.

He said Air Peace would continue to do its best to meet the needs of passengers, but also required them to align with the airline to ensure they could travel to their destinations by adhering to specified times.

A passenger puts liquids into a bag at airport security check

Liquid restrictions at UK airports to remain in place until June 2025

Travellers will have to wait another year for 100ml limit to be lifted after government extends deadline for new scanners

Holidaymakers will continue to face limits on the amount of liquid they can carry on flights out of the UK this summer after the government extended the deadline for airports to install new security scanners by a year.

The Department for Transport had previously set a target for the introduction of 3D scanners in all UK airports by 1 June, but this has now been extended by 12 months because some major airports will not be ready in time.

Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester Airports Group, which owns Manchester airport and Stansted, said in January that they would not meet the deadline and hoped the latest scanners would be fully operational in 2025.

The scanners, which have already been fully introduced at London City airport and Teesside airport, use computed tomography to produce clearer and more accurate images.

They also include the latest explosive detection capabilities, which can detect threats without the need for liquid containers to be removed.

When introduced, the current 100ml limit on the amount of liquid that can be held in carry-on luggage will be scrapped and replaced with a two-litre rule.

Nor will liquids and laptops have to be removed from carry-on bags, speeding up the security process.

The restrictions on liquids were introduced in 2006 after security officials foiled a plan to blow up a transatlantic flight using liquid concealed in a bottle of soft drink.

The government is now telling travellers that they should continue to expect the current 100ml rule throughout the summer.

Th aviation minister, Anthony Browne, said: “By 1 June, more than 50% of passengers will be going through the new security checkpoint, but our message is that travellers should prepare for the current rules to be in place and check what the specific rules are for the airport they are using.”

Department for Transport officials said some airports had faced supply-chain delays in securing orders for their scanners.

Other airports had been hit with construction problems, including having to reinforce floors because of the weight of the machines.

The government said it would issue penalties for airports that were not ready after the June 2025 deadline, but gave no details of what they might be.

after newsletter promotion

It is the second time the government has been forced to delay the rollout after initially setting a deadline of 2022 .

The installation of the new scanners has come with additional costs for airports. Heathrow is spending about £1bn on the new equipment, including upgrading 146 security lanes across four terminals. The Guardian has contacted Heathrow about its progress.

Manchester Airports Group said it was making good progress at both of its sites and was introducing the upgrades lane-by-lane, with several already operational. Full completion of the programme is expected next year.

Gatwick said its position was unchanged from January when it indicated a completion date of spring 2025 .

London Luton airport also has some lanes operational and said it was “making excellent progress” towards the June deadline.

Newcastle airport said it had already installed the technology, and Bristol airport said it would meet the government’s deadline.
