Durham NEW Bus Tracker App Instructions

District 300’s transportation partner, Durham School Services, has joined with BusZone to offer families an app that provides customizable options for bus tracking.

With BusZone, app security is priority one, especially where personal information is concerned. All parent/guardian information is locked down and password protected within the app to prevent unauthorized people from opening the app and viewing a student’s bus information. 

The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. A parent must have a smartphone, tablet, or similar device to download the app.

Use of the app is purely voluntary. No cost is associated with the app; however, associated data charges may apply and will be the responsibility of the user. 

How to Set up BusZone: 

Download the BusZone app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. 

Enter the school access code - 4009D300 

In the search field, enter the bus or route number you want to follow. If you have multiple students, complete this step for all the buses your students ride throughout the week. 

Enter each child’s unique student ID and name information. 

Create alert zones around drop-off and pick-up points. When your child’s bus enters an alert zone, you will receive notification by email or text.

Note to elementary parents: This app works with the Zonar ZPass card program that was initiated at the start of the 2022-23 school year. When a student uses a ZPass card to swipe on and off the bus, you will be able to see via the app when and where your student boards and disembarks the bus. In addition, users are able to add cell phone information via the app to receive text alerts. It is important to also note that students do not swipe off the bus at school in the morning.

It is very important for students to still arrive at the bus stop five minutes prior to their scheduled time to avoid missing the bus. The bus will not return for students who were not at the bus stop at their correct time. 

Late Start schedules won’t be reflected in the BusZone app, but you are able to see where a bus is located.

Not Working

This app is not working more than it is working. You get a your child’s bus is running late call follow the bus on the app and the bus on the app is still showing at the depot. Now today the app has logged everyone out and won’t let anyone back in. You cannot follow the bus if you cannot get into the app. The technical support button takes you to a page not found page when you try to contact the app developers. What’s the purpose of having the button when it leads you to a blank page. Now no way to let developers know app isn’t working

If I could give this negative stars…

This app is completely worthless and incredibly frustrating! More often than not, when you open it, it has logged you out and, when you try to log in, the system times out and locks you out. When it does happen to be working, about half the time the busses don’t even show any movement. Maybe it is a substitute bus that day - but it would not be at all difficult to set it up so the new bus location was shown. Clearly this app was created and never updated. If you are going to advertise this as a “perk” of using your bus system, make sure it at least works.

Would be great if it actually worked.

Like other reviewers, I have trouble with this app probably 90% of the time. Currently, no matter whether the bus is driving up my street or just leaving school, it just shows being at its parking lot. Useless. National Express LLC is the developer of this awful app for Durham. The last upstate was two years ago. Is Durham no longer paying for service and updates from you? When schedules and buses are changing on a daily basis, this app is a really important thing for parents to have. Unfortunately, it’s just one more source of frustration regarding bus service for our kids.

Durham Bus Tracker App Now Available

The Troy City School District is pleased to offer our students and families the Durham Bus Tracker app, which allows families to view the location of their child’s bus and provides near real-time information about the bus routes, including scheduled arrival time of each stop. This free app works with GPS technology currently installed on all Durham buses.

Download the free app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store , or visit m.durhambustracker.com on your mobile device or computer. Back to School Sustainable Travel Tips

Students and parents/guardians will return to the classroom starting in August. In honor of the back-to-school season, Way to Go Durham has compiled ways to travel sustainably to and from the classroom.

Ride the School Bus:

All students at Durham Public Schools (DPS) have access to a secure portal to view their student’s bus routes and schedules. To log in, enter your child’s last name and ID number to check the bus assignment or print a pass for a first-time rider. Contact or visit their school for additional information on your student’s bus route.

As an extra safety measure for your student, familiarize your student with bus stop crossing signals using the DPS Guide.  Review the Durham Public Schools Bus Safety Website for all other questions and safety resources.

Explore GoDurham’s or GoTriangle’s Free Transit:

If your student is old enough to ride GoDurham Transit or GoTriangle as a mode of transportation to and from school, this is a viable and accessible option. To plan their trip and identify routes, visit GoDurham or GoTriangle . Students do not need a pass or ID because all Triangle region buses are fare-free until June 2024. Students and guardians can track the bus in real-time using the myStop App on Apple or Android devices.

Form a Walking School Bus:

A walking school bus is a group of students and guardians who walk or ride bikes to and from school. If you live within walking distance from your student’s school, this option can increase your steps while decreasing your carbon footprint.

Enhance student and guardian participation by joining the Safe Routes to School Program . This program aims to make it safer for students to walk and bike to school and encourage more walking and biking where safety is not a barrier. Throughout the year, programs are hosted to promote biking, walking, or rolling to school. Learn more about events in Durham or coordinate your own here.

Create Your Carpool Crew:

A fun way to divide the ride between neighbors, friends, or teammates is by forming a carpool crew. As your students take on new extracurricular activities, spend time identifying neighbors or friends to create your carpool system. A successful carpool system relies on organization, communication, and commitment. Be the champion for your carpool crew and create your schedule, route, and plan.

DPS bus drivers get students to school safely after alerting parents to possible delays

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- After sending out distress call Thursday night, available drivers scrambled to cover routes, Durham Public Schools (DPS) said in a statement.

According to a news release from the school, DPS Transportation leaders worked into the night to get bus routes for 23 schools covered Friday morning. DPS said bus drivers reworked their schedules and changed appointments to ensure students were safely driven to school. The uncovered routes would have affected more than 2,000 students.

"We are extremely grateful to our professional drivers for their acts of generosity and teamwork. We understand that rescheduling a day in one's life is a sacrifice. We also acknowledge the hard work undertaken by our Transportation department to make the appeal and deploy substitute drivers to make this morning's routes happen," said Dr. Pascal Mubenga, DPS Superintendent.

Transportation staff are continuing to work through the day to avoid disruptions in this afternoon's bus service.

The mad scramble started Thursday evening after DPS sent a message encouraging families on some bus routes to arrange alternative transportation for students Friday.

DPS says the delays are due to a bus driver shortage.

Shanice Toomer is one of the nearly 2,000 families who are impacted by this announcement. Her children are first year bus riders.

"My kids normally were car riders but the strain on gas was too much. So we made them bus riders. And now like, it's a hassle," Toomer said.

Parents like Susan Garner said delays and cancellations have a ripple effect.

"It would be terrible because expenses are going to be incurred, possibly losing a day at work, having to find a sitter," she said. "That would just cause a domino effect. And it wouldn't work out very well at all. It's ridiculous."

District spokesperson William" Chip" Sudderth said the district simply does not have enough available bus driver or substitute drivers. They need about 65 to 70 more.

"First of all, the most important thing is we're sorry, we are dealing with the same challenges and hiring and retaining bus drivers that other school districts and municipal bus systems like GoTriangle are experiencing," Sudderth said. " If more people are out sick or family emergency happens, or people are out for other reasons, there's not a lot of giving, and that is the challenge that we're having right now.

Durham Public Schools is heavily recruiting more drivers. Thursday the district announced they're offering cash incentives for monthly perfect attendance for drivers, referrals of new drivers, and signing bonuses.

" If there is a driver out there who has never worked for us before, who has their commercial driver's license in hand, and if they work for us, they're eligible for a $3,000 signing bonus. We need them. And our kids need them," Sudderth said.

Chief Justice Extols Legacy of Sandra Day O’Connor

In remarks at an award ceremony, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. described his colleague as a trailblazing and civic-minded presence on the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. delivered a fond tribute to former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on Thursday, celebrating her legacy as the first woman on the Supreme Court and her commitment to advancing civics and civility after her retirement.

During an award ceremony at Duke University to recognize her contribution to civics education, Chief Justice Roberts reiterated his admiration of his former colleague, a crucial swing justice who was often referred to as the most powerful woman in America. He eulogized her in December shortly after her death at 93 .

“Sandra Day O’Connor expanded the public image of what it meant to look like a judge,” he said. “She sounded the alarm about the growing lack of appreciation of what it means to be a citizen.”

For her work in civics education, she was recognized on Thursday with the Bolch Prize for the Rule of Law, an award that has often been given to honor judges, including former Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, for lifetime achievements. The award was accepted by her son Scott O’Connor.

The paths of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice O’Connor have long intersected.

On his first day of work at the Justice Department in 1981, the young Mr. Roberts was assigned to help prepare the future justice for her confirmation hearings in the Senate, putting together draft answers to questions he expected her to face. She was ultimately confirmed by a vote of 99 to 0 .

Justice O’Connor would then sit on the bench for every one of the more than three dozen cases Chief Justice Roberts argued before the Supreme Court as a lawyer, he told the audience on Thursday.

Years later, in 2005, he was nominated by President George W. Bush to succeed Justice O’Connor when she announced she would retire. The two ultimately served alongside each other on the bench for less than a year after the death of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist left a more urgent vacancy.

For a brief period before the arrival of Justice Amy Coney Barrett in 2020, Chief Justice Roberts had a taste of the role Justice O’Connor played throughout much of her time on the court, serving as the swing vote and the ideological center. In her nearly 25 years on the court, Justice O’Connor frequently staked out a middle ground on contentious issues like abortion, gay rights and affirmative action.

Echoing previous public remarks memorializing her, Chief Justice Roberts paid tribute to Justice O’Connor’s trailblazing role, citing how she had laid a foundation for women to follow at a time when they were not seen as equals.

Flipping through photos from early in her career, he paused several times to highlight the conspicuous scarcity of other women around her in her law school class, a moot court competition and later on the Supreme Court, drawing laughs from the crowd.

“I certainly felt that she felt she had a responsibility as the first woman on the Supreme Court to show that she could more than keep up with the boys,” he said on Thursday. “But I think she also felt a responsibility as the most powerful woman in America to be out there, putting her best foot forward and promoting the values that help define our country.”

Justice O’Connor stepped down in 2006 to care for her husband, who was battling Alzheimer’s disease, but remained active in public life, hearing cases on appeals courts and promoting civics education, including by establishing an online program. In 2018, she announced she had dementia.

Her example helped open the door for others, however. Today, four of the nine justices are women.
