Frequently asked questions

You can do a wide range of things, from student outreach and prayer journeys to medical work and English teaching. We work in diverse locations across East Asia, from huge cities like Tokyo to the villages of Thailand. Each placement contributes to our long-term work to share the good news of Jesus.

If you’re looking for a team experience, we regularly partner with churches, Bible colleges, seminaries and schools to send short-term teams.

Serve Asia placements are available in 17 different East Asian countries where OMF has long-term workers. You can browse current Serve Asia opportunities by location on the OMF Opportunities website.

The Serve Asia programme runs all year around. You can serve for anything from one week to 12 months alongside OMF’s long-term workers in East Asia. Some of the Serve Asia opportunities listed online have set dates, while others are more flexible and can be arranged to suit both you and the host country.

One or two week mission trips are popular with those who are already in close proximity to the ministry location. Although only in the field for a short time, Serve Asia workers can be involved in many ways that work towards growing God’s church in Asia.

For those looking to go on a more long-term mission trip we have lots of opportunities available. We will do our best to find a place where you can serve in a ministry using your specific skills and gifts to meet a need in the field. By going for 6 weeks to 12 months it gives you an opportunity to be immersed in, and learn about, culture and language. You will also receive spiritual and personal support and mentoring from an OMF missionary.

If you are unsure which placement is right for you the Serve Asia Coordinator in your home country can help you to prayerfully consider how your gifts and skills could be used on the mission field and help to match this to current short-term mission opportunities in East Asia.

You can get in touch with your nearest OMF centre using the contact form.

Serve Asia regularly partners with churches, bible colleges, seminaries and schools to send teams to East Asia. We want to support and serve churches and other sending communities as they find ways to be more strategically involved in reaching East Asia’s peoples, and as they spur their members into deeper areas of discipleship.

To find out more about group mission trips please get in touch with your nearest OMF centre using the contact form.

The cost of a Serve Asia trip will vary depending on your home country and host country. Most trips will cost (USD) between $1000-3000 per month not including airfare and other one-time departure expenses (insurance, vaccinations, etc). However more detailed costs will be provided by the Serve Asia Coordinator in your home country.

Find out more about raising support, including fundraising for mission trips.

If you are interested in applying for one of the Serve Asia mission trips listed online, please register with the OMF Opportunities website. Answering these few quick questions helps us to connect you with your local OMF team. Once you have created an account it enables you to submit an inquiry about the opportunity which interests you.

After you submit an inquiry the Serve Asia Coordinator in your home country will contact you and ask you to complete a set of application forms. Once these have been reviewed you will meet a local OMF representative for an interview. After the interview your coordinator will let you know whether you have been accepted into the Serve Asia programme.

In some cases, people may not be able to participate in an on-the-ground Serve Asia placement because of medical or personal issues. The wellbeing of both the applicant and the long-term ministry are paramount to us as we thoroughly screen each application.

Once your application has been accepted you will be invited to attend a training day or weekend in your home country to help you to prepare for your mission trip.

To help you prepare spiritually and practically for your Serve Asia trip we recommend the Prepare Your Heart devotional found here.

You’ll benefit from our help and support in learning the language and culture, pastoral care and medical care.

Our support doesn’t stop when your placement ends. We hope your time with Serve Asia will be part of your life-long growth as a disciple of Jesus playing a part in his global plan. We provide mentoring, ways to stay involved in God’s work in the world and advice to help you and your church make the most of your experience with us.

By mission discipleship we mean that we hope to walk alongside each Serve Asia worker as they try to discern where and how they fit into God’s mission.

Before the great commission (Matthew 8:28), Jesus simply asked his disciples to “Follow me.” For three years the disciples walked, talked, ate, slept, witnessed miracles, cast out demons, and more as they followed Jesus. Through their following they learned. Through their following they were equipped. Through their following their commitment grew – so much so that when Jesus gave the great commission, their hearts were fully engaged, and their lives shaped for the long-term journey.

Serve Asia is not just about the “doing”.

In Serve Asia we don’t just focus on going to the mission field and “doing” something. It’s all about learning and finding out more about what is at the centre of God’s heart. It’s about learning more about what it means to follow God, even if this is to hard places. Serve Asia is not just about the short-term, it’s about gaining long-term vision and commitment.

Upon returning home, we help each Serve Asia worker to integrate and process their experiences. We walk with them as God leads, exploring further involvement in mission through praying, going, sending, learning, mobilising, or welcoming East Asians.

Pray for China

“The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” – Jesus Christ, Lord of the Harvest
“I believe it will only be known on the last day how much has been accomplished in overseas missions by the prayers of earnest believers at home.” – James O. Fraser, Missionary to China

Going Forward on Our Knees

Thank you for your interest in praying for China! We believe that nothing can be accomplished for the Lord in China apart from the prayers of His people.

How should someone pray for a country of 1.4 billion people? We believe it’s best to pray for China province by province and region by region. Thus, we have compiled Praying For China: A Guide to assist and guide believers as they pray for this vast mission field.

For even more detailed information about praying for each region of China as outlined in our prayer guide, click the “Pray for China: Expanded Guide” link below.

Being able to observe and learn from a medical system that is very different to the one I am used to was extremely surreal but interesting. Envision a china mission trip.

God’s Hand is sweeping over Asia. Over 30,000 people are coming to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ daily in China, and there is a great need for you to place Bibles and study materials in their hands .

Although you may hear that there is religious freedom in this country, the underground church still faces persecution, especially in rural locations. Many pastors are new Christians trying to lead congregations of 500-700 people with very little training or access to study materials in their language.

Your team will be bringing the light of Christ through covert endeavors, delivering Bibles and study books to mainland China, teaching or visiting Chinese believers, visiting orphanages, encouraging pastors and church members, interacting with street kids, and participating in English Corners (a place for Asians to practice their English-speaking skills). You can bring spiritual aid to our Asian brothers and sisters! China is not for the faint of heart. It is for those passionate about pursuing and spreading God’s love. Take the challenge and equip these precious new believers with a China mission trip.

Ready for your short term mission trip to China? Spread His Word in your Christian mission trips to China and create one of your life’s most defining moments.

Listening Prayer

We want you to have a new experience with Jesus that dramatically encourages your relationship with Him. God has things to say to you! During our mission trips, we intentionally spend time to listen.

Relationship-driven process

More than just setting up a trip, we want to become your partners in ministry.

Customized ministry

The Holy Spirit is already doing a great work in your group; it’s our role to understand your needs and come alongside what God is already doing in a unique way.

Trusted local partners

All of our ministry partners, both overseas and domestic, have a history of excellence in hosting short-term mission teams.

Quality leadership

All of our Mission Leaders have been well trained and are specifically prepared to lead each group.

Sustainable missions

More than just designing an experience for your group, we work with ministry partners that have a long-term plan for sustainability. Your team will come alongside these efforts and can be confident that your service is actually helping.

It’s important to us that your group has an opportunity to connect with Jesus and what He’s doing, both around the world and here in the United States. It’s just as important to us that your experience happens in the context of a plan for sustainability. Our long-term missionaries and ministry partners are doing fantastic work every day. Your short-term mission trip will be specifically designed to support that effort while inspiring your group’s relationship with Jesus.

  • In the case that Adventures cancels a trip, a group’s funds are refundable up to the $75 per person deposit. This deposit is able to be applied toward a future trip with Adventures.
  • Adventures will make cancelations 60 days before a trip, except for the case of unpredictable or extenuating circumstances.
  • In the case that a group decides to cancel, their payments can be applied toward a future trip with Adventures but are not refundable.
  • Groups must notify Adventures of a decision to cancel 60 days before the trip. After this point we cannot guarantee any re-application of funds.

COVID-19 Trip Guidelines

Adventures encourages all participants to follow CDC guidelines and local regulations at all times. These guidelines will likely change between now and the time of your trip. We will discuss these changes with you as part of your preparation leading up to your trip. It’s important that your group familiarize themselves with these guidelines and make the appropriate preparation before the trip begins.

Having said that, we have also established these basic guidelines for all Adventures Short Term Mission trips.

  • Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire before traveling to their destination.
  • Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire each morning before breakfast.
  • Trip participants should maintain social distancing, including in ministry. When not socially distanced, wear a mask.
  • Each participant should bring at least three masks to wear throughout the week.
  • All participants will be required to have their temperature checked by the Project Leader each morning. The Project Leader will be equipped with a temporal thermometer.
  • No large group gatherings. We will coordinate with our ministry partners to try to ensure that there are no large group gatherings. In the case that there are, this is done at the discretion of the ministry partner and participants should not feel obligated to attend. It’s our objective to have plenty of smaller service opportunities, such as serving at food pantries, doing work projects at churches or ministries and ministering to people in smaller groups and in a safe, responsible manner.

They will be quarantined and taken to a facility to have a COVID test taken. They will remain quarantined for 10 days, per CDC guidelines.

They will be quarantined from the rest of the group and everyone will follow CDC recommendations.

Exposure means 15 minute of close interaction. In this case, the participant will enter the quarantine protocol.

The participant should notify their Project Leader or group leader and remove herself/himself from the situation.

Each location will be prepared with quarantine recommendations. Each situation is unique and will be handled specifically to address the needs of the individual, the group and others who are involved.

Each group is financially responsible for their own flights. We cannot reimburse any costs associated with travel. Please check with the airline about their flight cancellation policy.

Most of the time this decision is made for us by local authorities. In some international cases, airlines may decide to not fly into a country. We look at government recommendations, airline activity and discuss with our partner. This, paired with our ongoing attention to CDC and WHO recommendations and regulations, usually makes the decision to cancel very clear.

  • Xinhua Headlines: "Bridge" in place, China ready to sample on moon's far side

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- As China is determined to drive economic growth via sci-tech innovations, it also casts its wisdom and courage in exploring Earth's closest neighbor -- the moon. This year, it plans to retrieve lunar samples from the far side of the moon for the first time in human history.

To carry out this unprecedented mission, it first launched Queqiao-2, a new relay satellite, on March 20 to provide Earth-Moon communications services. The satellite has recently entered its target elliptical orbit around the moon and completed in-orbit communication tests, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

Queqiao, meaning magpie bridge, derives its name from a Chinese folktale, in which magpies formed a bridge across the Milky Way with their wings to help a separated couple reunite. In reality, Queqiao-2 is expected to serve as a vital communication link between Earth-based controllers and the Chang'e-6 probe, which will be launched in the first half of this year to collect samples from the mysterious far side of the moon.

As the moon's revolution cycle is the same as its rotation cycle, the same side always faces Earth. The other face, most of which cannot be seen from Earth, is called the far side or "dark side" of the moon. This term doesn't refer to darkness but rather to the mystery shrouding the moon's largely unexplored terrain.

In order to unravel the mystery, China launched the Chang'e-4 probe, which realized the first-ever soft landing and roving on the far side of the moon at the beginning of 2019. Before that, all relevant knowledge came from speculation based on remote-sensing images.

China launched its first Queqiao satellite in 2018 to support communications and data transmission between Chang'e-4 and Earth. But the first relay satellite has exceeded its designed lifespan. Now, the more powerful Queqiao-2 satellite will take over its communications relay services.

As a backup of the Chang'e-5 probe, Chang'e-6 is set to collect approximately 2 kilograms of lunar samples by shoveling and drilling. The probe will also conduct scientific investigations within the designated landing zone situated in the South Pole-Aitken Basin.

The mission will demand a series of breakthroughs in key technologies, such as automatic sample collection, take-off and ascent from the far side of the moon.

Scientists believe that samples from the far side of the moon have greater research value. Unlike the relatively low-lying and flat terrains found on the near side, the far side has higher elevations and is more densely covered with craters. It suggests that the far side has been subjected to a longer history of impacts, indicating an older geological age for in-depth exploration.

Li Ting and her research team from the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology, a subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation, discovered from the Chang'e-5 samples a new mineral, Changesite-(Y). She is much looking forward to samples from the moon's "fresh and unfamiliar" far side.

"If Chang'e-6 can get some older lunar samples exposed after impacts or residues of meteorites and asteroids, it may bring us more deep space information," said Li.

Humans have been curious and imaginative about the moon since ancient times. Li Bai, a renowned poet from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), once wrote a poem to ask when the moon appeared in the blue sky. In fact, the origin of the moon has not only inspired romantic sentiments among literati and scholars throughout history, but also remained a focus of research in the field of lunar science.

In the 16th century, people started using telescopes to observe the moon. In January 1959, the Soviet Union launched the Luna 1 probe, the world's first lunar exploration satellite. In October 2007, China achieved a milestone with the successful launch of the Chang'e-1 satellite, marking the country's inaugural lunar exploration mission.

From the United States' Apollo 11 mission in 1969 to China's Chang'e-5 mission in 2020, humans have accomplished a total of 10 lunar sampling missions. The initial nine samplings all took place during the 1960s and 1970s. Following a 44-year hiatus, Chang'e-5 retrieved 1.731 kilograms of lunar samples, opening a new chapter in cutting-edge lunar research.

The lunar rocks and soil encapsulate the key to decoding the mysteries of billions of years of transformations on the moon. Nearly all our understanding of the moon's inception and development stems from the study of lunar samples, said Yang Wei, researcher with the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A widely accepted theory in the scientific community believes that approximately 4.5 billion years ago, a Mars-sized celestial body known as Theia collided with nascent Earth. The collision caused debris to be ejected into space, which eventually coalesced around Earth to form the moon. This hypothesis owes much to the analysis of lunar samples collected during the United States and Soviet Union lunar missions, Yang said.

Different from previous nine missions which focus on low-latitude areas, Chang'e-5 targeted mid-latitude regions of the moon. With advanced microanalysis technologies, scientists have made groundbreaking discoveries from the study of lunar soil retrieved by Chang'e-5.

According to the CNSA, one of the most notable research results dated the youngest rock on the moon at around 2 billion years in age, extending the "life" of lunar volcanism 800-900 million years longer than previously known.

In the following studies, Chinese scientists further revealed a new mechanism for how young volcanoes took shape on the moon and new clues about the moon's water resources.

The new lunar mineral Changesite-(Y), the first discovered by China and the sixth by humankind, makes China the third country in the world to have discovered a new mineral on the moon.

Li Ting and her team made this great discovery on a single-crystal particle with a radius of about 10 microns, which was only one 200th to 300th the size of a sesame seed. It was isolated from 140,000 tiny lunar particles of about 15-milligram Chang'e-5 samples.

Through the meticulous analysis by Li's team, this imperceptible particle became an essential piece of the moon's geological puzzle. "Planets are composed of interconnected puzzle pieces. Each new mineral we uncover adds a fresh dimension to their intricate pattern, bearing historical imprints of their formative environments," Li said.

For example, Changesite-(Y) is rich in rare earth elements and its magnesium to iron ratio is different from previously identified same subgroup minerals, reflecting the unique characteristics of the Chang'e-5 landing site, Li said.

However, the "puzzle pieces" obtained by human missions remain notably restricted. So far, all 10 sampling missions have been focused on the near side of the moon. If the first nine sampling sites were to be connected to form a polygon, it would merely account for 4.4 percent of the lunar surface. Even with the Chang'e-5 samples, their representativeness is still far from sufficient, Yang said.

"In our geological research on Earth, we will strive to gather the most fundamental data whenever exploring a new location. However, in the case of the moon, humanity has only obtained samples from a handful of sites, with none from high-latitude regions or the far side. Therefore, from a geological perspective, the moon remains a vastly uncharted territory," Li said.

Aside from Chang'e-6, China also plans to launch Chang'e-7 in 2026 and Chang'e-8 in 2028. Chang'e-7 and Chang'e-8 will form the basic model of a lunar research station to carry out lunar environment exploration.

The landing and sampling sites of China's moon missions in the coming years are mainly in the lunar south pole region or on the far side of the moon, the CNSA said.

"Building a research station on the moon, and exploring deeper space using the moon as a base, was once an imagination in science fictions. Now, it may become a reality in my lifetime," Li said. Enditem
