How to Hang your RV shower curtain

Some RV’s have shower curtain tracks screwed to the ceiling.  And they attach to the shower curtain with little plastic clips.

Some of these units may require you to unscrew the entire track in order to remove the shower curtain.

If you can use your existing hardware, and you’re happy with the way your shower curtain slides, then it makes sense to just use the curtain track or rod that you already have.

But if you don’t like your current shower track or rod, you can get replacements.

Replacement Ceiling Mount Curtain Tracks

Do you have a factory-installed shower curtain track that just plain sucks?

Well, the Texas company Curtain-Tracks.com has a variety of replacement curtain tracks . They’re sure to have something that’ll work for your RV.

For instance, they sell a flexible 6-foot shower curtain kit.

It comes as a 6-foot strip but you can cut the strip with a hacksaw or miter saw . So you can get it perfectly sized for your RV shower.

You screw the track into the ceiling to get yourself a new, smooth-running shower curtain track.

Plus, the company has good customer support .  During the research of this article I was wondering how you cut the curtain track. I contacted the company through their website and they were quick to answer my question. So thumbs up for support.

Curved Shower Tension Rod

A lot of RV owners don’t want to screw into their walls.  Thankfully some genius person invented tension rods .

And you can get curved tension rod shower bars like the one below.

So you’ll get the benefit of a curved shower rod (more elbow room inside the shower ) and you won’t have to screw into your walls.

RV Shower Curtain Rod Replacement – 2 mounting options

This curved shower rod is cool because it has two mounting options.

You can screw it into the wall if you’re comfortable doing that, or you can use its tension-mount feature.

It fits shower openings 32-inches to 40-inches wide.

Will this work as an RV shower curtain rod for your rig? Will it provide that extra elbow room you crave?

Curved RV Shower Curtain Rod (requires screws)

First off, I’ll apologize for the blurry product photo. This is the photo they have on their Amazon product page .

The reason I’m including it on this list because during my research it is one of the only small curved shower curtain rods that I could find.

This curved shower rod mounts to the wall using screws . So if you’re comfortable with that, this may work for you.

It is designed to fit small showers with openings 29-inches to 49-inches wide.

Having a curved design will give you some more elbow room in the shower.

It doesn’t come with the shower curtain hooks, but you can buy these at most dollar stores real cheap.

Stromberg Carlson Extend-A-Shower Curved Rod (Model EXT-3542)

The company Stromberg Carlson makes a replacement RV shower curtain rod that’ll give your shower some extra elbow room.

But it does requires screwing into the walls. You’ll have to find wood backing to screw into.

Judging by how highly rated this product it, I think most RV owners have been successful at installing it.

They claim that out of the box it can adjust to fit showers 35” to 42” wide. And that if you have a narrower shower, you can cut this product to fit smaller showers.

Straight Chrome-colored RV Shower Curtain Tension Rod

If you want just a straight shower tension rod, Amazon Basics makes this one that fits small showers that are 24-inches to 36-inches wide (So 2-feet to 3-feet wide.)

Tension shower rods are an easy, no-tools required option.

Straight, white-colored RV Shower Curtain tension Rod

Here is another straight tension rod that’ll work in small showers with openings 26-inches to 42-inches wide.

This is made by iDesign.   They make a lot of quality products and this highly-rated product is no different. It has non-slip ends so it should grip onto your RV shower walls without damaging them.

L-Shaped Shower Curtain Rod (uses adhesive)

This is an interesting idea. It is an L-shaped shower rod. I’ve included it on this list because it uses an adhesive to stick the mounting brackets to tile shower walls.

Before you order this, you’ll want to make sure you measure your shower – width and depth – to make sure this’ll fit .  And you can’t glue it onto wall paper, or it’ll just tear it, so make sure you have appropriate shower walls too.

Adhesive Shower Curtain Rod Holder

If you don’t want to screw into your walls, and you can’t find a tension bar option that you like, there is another option.

You can buy these adhesive shower rod holders (the white holders in the picture above).

They’ll stick to tile or painted walls.

This particular model will hold shower rods up to 1.5-inches in diameter.

In our shower at home we have a tension bar shower rod, AND I use holders like this to keep the tension bar from sliding around. So you can use both in your RV too: a tension rod shower curtain and adhesive holders like this.

Splash Guard Alternatives

What some RV owners do instead of installing a splash guard, is attaching one piece of Velcro to the shower wall, and the other piece to the shower curtain.  To really stick the shower curtain to the wall.

RV Shower Curtains

It is important to install a shower curtain that fits your RV’s shower.

A shower curtain that is too wide may bunch up, overlap, and will not dry out properly. This creates a favorable environment for mold. And no one likes a moldy shower curtain.

And a shower curtain that is too tall will slouch on the floor causing a tripping hazard and can also lead to mold growth.

This is why it’s important to buy (or modify) a shower curtain to fit your particular shower.

Make sure to measure your shower opening and get a curtain that fits your particular RV’s width and height.  

Below are some tips on how to get the proper size shower curtain for your RV.

Measuring RV Shower Curtain Height

The standard shower curtain height for most homes is 72-inches tall.

This size may work for some newer, larger RV’s, but RV’s usually require short shower curtains.

For instance, in my sister’s “Copper Canyon” 5 th wheel, it is 68-inches from the floor to the top of the shower glass doors.

If she wanted to remove those glass doors and replace it with a shower curtain, she’d need a short shower curtain (or raise the replacement shower curtain rod closer to the roof).

You want your shower curtain (or liner) to extend down inside the tub to fully ensure the water is trapped in the shower, but you don’t want the curtain so long that it bunches up at the bottom.

You don’t want too much slack at the bottom of your shower curtain because this overlap of material will pool water. Pooled water leads to mold and mildew growth.

Measure from wherever your shower curtain will hang to the floor of your shower basin or tub .  Reminder that where you measure from the top will depend on how you’ll hang your shower curtain.  You may hang it from a shower curtain rod, curtain track or shower curtain hooks, and all these will affect the length of the shower curtain.

Then once you have that measurement you can cut a regular-sized plastic shower curtain to fit, hem a fabric shower curtain, or buy a ready-made RV shower curtain.

Measuring RV Shower Curtain Width

The general guideline is to take your shower opening’s width and add 12-inches to get the proper shower curtain size. This allows 6-inches of curtain overlap on each wall of the shower opening to make sure water doesn’t splash out the sides.

For instance, if your RV shower is 36-inches wide, you add 12-inches to this to get 48-inches.  You’ll want to look for a shower curtain that is 48-inches wide…or close to it.

You’ll notice that many replacement RV shower curtains are 47-inches wide. This size will work just fine for 36-inch wide shower openings.

Buy or Modify a RV Shower Curtain?

You can buy a dedicated RV shower curtain that is sized to fit the majority of RV showers. Or you can buy a standard shower curtain and customize it to fit your RV bathroom.

In this section below we’ll show some examples of RV shower curtains that may work for your RV.

1) Plastic Shower Curtain liner for RV Shower Curtains

This is a basic WATERPROOF plastic shower curtain liner. It is made from polyethylene vinyl acetate, or PEVA for short.

It is a waterproof shower curtain that you can use on its own, or you can use it as a waterproof backing behind more decorative fabric shower curtains.

It is available in several different sizes. This particular model is the clear 47-inch wide by 64-inch high version .

This could be a good shower liner for many of the other camper shower curtains featured in this article.

(Or you could buy a cheap shower curtain from the dollar store and cut it to fit your RV. And use that as your shower curtain liner.)

2) Forest and Mountain Camper Shower Curtain

This camper shower curtain is 47-inches wide by 64-inches tall.

It features this beautiful forest landscape scene. So serene.

This would be a great for RV owners that seek adventure.

3) Happy Camper Shower Curtain (47″Wide x 64″ High)

This is a polyester fabric shower curtain. It intended to be used as a camper shower curtain. It is 47-inches wide but 64-inches high.

Most people will choose to use a plastic shower curtain liner on the inside of this.

4) Simple White Polyester Fabric Shower Curtain

This is a simple white shower curtain . It is available in several different sizes. This particular size is 47-inches wide by 64-inches tall.

It is made of polyester fabric, so it is a water repellant fabric . The water will bead off of it.

But once again, some people prefer to line fabric shower curtains with vinyl or other plastic shower curtain liners.

If you’re looking for basic travel trailer shower curtains or for your motorhome…well, white is pretty basic. Maybe these’ll work for you.

5) Beautiful Black Bear Camper Shower Curtain (Etsy)

Doesn’t this look awesome!

It is a polyester fabric shower curtain available on Etsy from the seller AllShowerCurtains.

It is available in a 47-inch wide by 70-inch tall size . This may be too tall for most RV showers, but perhaps you could hem it to fit your particular camper.

6) Life is Better at the Campsite – RV Shower Curtain

Here is another shower curtain that will add some nice “Campy” decor to your RV bathroom.

It is another polyester fabric shower curtain. You can machine wash it if it gets dirty. So after a long camping trip, you can bring it home and wash it. (Or wash it in your RV if you have onboard laundry.)

This is another polyester shower curtain that is available in a 47-inch wide by 64-inches tall shower curtain .

It is machine washable , and comes with 12 plastic shower rings so you can hang it from your curtain rod.

These would make nice, simple travel trailer shower curtains for a minimalist look.

This is a well-rated product on Amazon. But will it work for your RV?

9) Watercolor Forest Scene RV Shower Curtain (Amazon)

Add some art to your RV bathroom with this watercolor forest scene shower curtain.

This colorful shower curtain is 47-inch wide by 64-inches tall, so it should fit a lot of RV showers that have openings up to 36-inches wide. (That way you’ll have almost 6-inches of extra curtain on each wall to keep the water in.)

10) Partially Translucent Plastic Shower Curtain (36″x72″)

I’ve included this in the list because it is waterproof plastic and being translucent it’ll allow light into your RV shower stall.

This is a good option if you don’t want like a darkened shower and if you don’t have or you’ve covered up your shower skylight.

It comes in a variety of sizes including a 36-inch wide by 72-inch tall size.

This is one of those things I wish I would have thought of ! How smart.

It combines two necessities – a shower curtain and shower organizer – into one cool product.

You can get this white shower curtain in a variety of sizes such as the 36-inch x 72-inch version shown here, but you can also get it in 47″x64″ size and others.

RV shower curtain. How to make this small space feel bigger. Plus tips on what to look for when buying a camper shower curtain.

This is such a simple little post but when you get a new (used) camper, you’re excited to make it your own!

To get all the little things that make it feel cozy or really, for it to just function properly. Like a shower curtain.

Hindsight is 2020, and you find out quickly that not all shower curtains are the same when living in a small space. Just like a once glamorous 20 minutes hot shower with elbow room, is no longer a possibility.

Keeping a camper shower clean

We booked our first camping trip after buying our RV pretty quickly. Since we bought it used, we were lucky that it came with so many little extras.

Can opener, knife set, utensils, pots and pans. It was just waiting for us to book the trip! But one thing it didn’t have was a shower curtain. No big deal. You can pick those up anywhere.

And so I did. For $1.50 at the thrift store I found this beautiful blue shower curtain. Only it didn’t work/look quite as I had expected.

RV SHOWER CURTAIN

The right size.

Your standard shower curtain is approximately 70×70 inches. And although that will work fine in most cases, in an RV it’s a lot of extra fabric that isn’t necessary.

The length of my tub is approximately 40 inches. Making a 70 inch shower curtain about 20 inches too long. That is if I’m hoping to keep the pleated look.

• Buy an RV size shower curtain
• Hem your own

You can easily find RV size shower curtains online. Just be sure to order the correct size before buying.

Shower Curtain Liner

Another thing to look for is wether or not you need a curtain liner with your shower curtain. Some curtains are water resistant, saving you from having to buy two products and giving you a bit more space in the shower.

As you can see, we also bought a RV shower curtain liner that was too big. Since we’re not new to the curtain liner rodeo, we knew to buy a heavy curtain liner as the light ones will cling to you while showering.

But this liner was just too long and too wide for this already small space.

You can either buy a smaller shower liner for your RV or trim one down to size like we did. This RV shower liner/curtain even has space saving mesh pockets!

We cut the shower curtain and liner to size and hemmed the cloth curtain so it would not fray.

As you can see we were able to maintain the pleated look while not having too much leftover fabric.

The inside of the shower is where we see the biggest difference. Now that it’s cut to size with both the width and length, we have a bit more room to move around.

How to make an RV Shower feel bigger

Besides making sure you buy (or trim) the correct size curtain and liner, you can also purchase a few more things to give you a bit more elbow room while showering.

The first one is replacing your existing curtain rod with an expandable shower rod . Essentially, this curtain rod can be pushed out (while using the shower) or pushed in. Giving you a few extra inches either way you may need it. This product does need to be properly fastened to the wall, so keep that in mind when making your purchase.

Another trick is to buy an extension rod and place it a few inches outside of the shower. That way you can drape your curtain liner over it giving you a few extra inches. Just be sure to measure how long you’d need your liner (and rod) before you buy or make adjustments.

A third trick would be to buy a water repellent shower curtain and skip the liner all together.

It’s important to keep the shower area clean and dry, and you can do so by

• purchasing the correct size curtain and liner
• closing the curtain to allow for better airflow once your done showering
• keeping the bathroom fan on a bit longer
• washing fabric curtains regularly
• purchasing rust free grommets

Although we made a few mistakes when buying a curtain and liner, we were able to remedy them pretty quickly. So if you’re new to the RV world, I hope these tips and tricks were just what you needed help guide you in the right direction on what to look for.

The curtain measures 47 by 64 inches and would be compatible with a straight or curved curtain rod. Since a curved rod can make your shower appear larger, this is a nice perk. As for the material, it’s made of machine-washable waterproof polyester. While you can iron the curtain using a low setting, it has to hang dry.

Unlike most of the curtains listed here, this one has to be cleaned by hand. Fortunately, the job is easy—just wipe it with a damp cloth and let it hang dry. The AmazerBath is available in several colors and sizes, and it’s compatible with straight and curved rods.

Buyer’s Guide

Important considerations.

Buying a shower curtain for an RV isn’t like buying one for a house. As such, there are certain factors you need to take into account. Here’s what you need to think about before you start shopping.

The shower in your travel trailer is probably a lot smaller than the one in your home. Take measurements before heading to the store or beginning an online search. When you know what size you’re looking for, you’ll be able to weed out a bunch of unsuitable options.

Why can’t you just buy a regular-sized curtain? You can use one of these in a pinch, but we don’t recommend it. The bigger the curtain is, the more moisture it will retain, which makes it more difficult to clean. This is true especially if it’s long enough to drag on the bathroom floor. Moreover, a longer curtain will pose a tripping hazard.

If you do end up with a curtain that’s too large, consider customizing it to suit your needs. You can cut a plastic curtain with scissors, but the ones made out of fabric will require hemming. Be aware that if you do this, you might be losing features that are designed to make the curtain hang straight, such as the heavy stones in the AmazerBath model listed above.

Installation

When it comes to hanging shower curtains in a travel trailer, one size doesn’t fit all. Check to see if there’s a track installed in the bathroom ceiling over the shower. If there is, you can use it to hang the new curtain, assuming the track is in good working order.

If the track is defective, or if there isn’t one there to begin with, you’ll need to install a curtain rod. A tension rod is a good choice, because it’s quick and carefree. Those of you who would prefer a curved rod may have to deal with more hardware and a longer installation process.

As an alternative, you can install a new track. This may be a good choice if the shower is located in the corner, since it can be tough to find a suitable curtain rod for these units. Installation may take a while, but tracks are easier to deal with in the long run.

Maintenance

• Close the curtain after each shower to make sure it dries properly
• Run the bathroom fan as you shower to keep moisture to a minimum

• Wash the curtain on a regular basis (exact timing may vary, depending on the household)

Features To Look For

In addition to the considerations we’ve listed above, keep the following criteria in mind as you begin your search.

Think about the color scheme in your bathroom. Would a festive print or graphic work with your decor? Or would you prefer a solid color? This won’t affect the performance of the curtain, of course, but as long as you have options, you might as well take advantage of them.

No one wants to spend more time taking care of their shower curtain than they spend actually showering. Choosing a product that’s made of machine-washable fabric can help in this regard. Privacy is important. That is especially so when you are trying to use the shower inside a pop-up camper. You need a good shower curtain to make sure you have some ‘walls’ between you and the rest of the interior. It may not be easy to find as some pop-ups just are not shower curtain friendly.

Finding an actual shower curtain may not be as difficult as it sounds. That is if you have a wrap-around roof installed shower curtain system in your pop-up. When you don’t have one of those, you may have to go to Velcro to find some privacy.

What Size Is a Pop-up Camper Shower Curtain?

Coleman Pop-up Camper Shower Curtain

When you want to stay with Coleman parts, and some people do, this company has its own online store you can turn to. The selection at this store is not that great but it does have shower curtains and also parts for your shower area.

That link will take you to their store and you can see what selection they have and if they have parts to make sure your curtain remains up. That is if you have an indoor shower. If you do not have one and need to go to an outdoor shower set up, Coleman has you covered there as well.

They sell an outdoor shower system except for the curtain. But that is okay as you can go to any store you like and buy a shower curtain in the color and design you want. This is one area of pop-up life where you have an extraordinary amount of freedom.

One Coleman owner also rigged up their own shower curtain rod using PVC pipe. You are not locked into having Coleman supply all the items you need. You can be creative and innovative with the shower area. Even if it means using a regular store-bought shower curtain.

Jayco Pop Up Camper Shower Curtain

With Jayco, you may have to contact the company directly or go through their dealers if you want a Jayco product to replace your original Jayco shower curtain. It seems that some of the company’s models had curtains attached to the rods and they could not be removed.

That meant replacing both the rod and the curtain if you needed a new one. While one owner simply had their dealer order them an extra shower curtain assembly when they bought their pop-up, most owners went to the DIY option instead.

One bought the traditional expanding shower curtain rod that used real screws and screwed it into the wall for better security. Others went to a curtain shop and sought out bendable aluminum curtain rods to use.

The curtain they used did not matter as shower curtains are shower curtains no matter where they are hung. There are good RV parts and supplies stores that will help you out in this situation.

Camping World, Wally’s World, Popupparts are just 3 names that will help you find the right shower system for your size of the pop-up. Going outside will make your search a little easier as you have lots of space to use up.

How Do You Hang Shower Curtains On a Pop-up Camper?

This will depend on the type of shower curtain rod you want to use and the dimensions of your pop-up camper . The easiest and fastest way to hang your curtains is to use the current rod and simply match the curtain to the hooks.

The second fastest way is if you need to replace the curtain rod as well. All you have to do is match the new rod with the old one. Then pull out the screws holding the old rod in place.

Then match the screws up with the old holes, going through the holes in the new rod and screw in the new rod. Then hang your curtain rod in place. These two options are common sense replacements and assume that you are working with an indoor shower system.

Still working indoors, you can see if a spring-loaded curtain rod will be easy to place inside. If not, you may have to go to one that is screwed into the wall or the ceiling. There are circular curtain rod tracks that attach to the ceiling without putting holes through your roof.

Those enclose the whole area but take a little time to install. All you will need will be a drill or a good screwdriver. The key for this option is to make sure the curtain holes line up with the track hooks so the curtain does not fold up in the wrong spots on you.

Wall mounts do not bring holes to your ceiling but are a little easier to put up. Sometimes you will need a small hook screwed into your ceiling to make sure the rod stays straight but that depends on the material you use.

Pop-up Camper Shower Curtain Track

One of the better aspects of hanging shower curtains is that you can get away with using standard house window curtain tracks instead. These tracks may not always fit your dimensions but there is enough of a variety for you to find something that will work.

For example, the plastic bendable curved track should be strong enough to hold the weight of your shower curtain when wet and still be maneuvered into the right privacy position. The cost is minimal and being plastic the track should not rust on you and last a long time.

Then there is the rectangle metal shower curtain rack that attaches to your ceiling. It gives you complete coverage while attaching to your ceiling. The key is to make sure the screws do not go into or through your roof.

If you need a specific pop-up camper shower curtain track, then you are limited to the different RV parts and accessories stores that dot the countryside. They will have the right parts for you from the brand you bought your pop-up from, or at least they should.

Or you can contact the dealers or the brand directly to see what they have in stock. Keep in mind that your costs are going to be higher if you go through these last few options. Also, the components may not be made from the best materials either.

Outdoor Shower Curtain For Pop Up Camper

As mentioned earlier, Coleman offers at least one of these for sale at their store. Just click on the link provided and search their website. The different brands will have dealers ready to help you find an outdoor shower system made for their models.

It isn’t the shower per se that you need to worry about. Each brand and some after-market outlets will have good showers you can purchase. You just have to compare prices and find the best for the least amount of money.

What is important when it comes to outdoor showers and which the RV brands do not seem to supply is privacy enclosures. These you have to shop for yourself and depending on your preferences and skill levels you can make just about any lightweight outdoor shower enclosure.

One person went to PVC pipe and strong industrial-sized suction cup holders. He attached the pipe together in a rectangle, with one connector having a downward opening. That opening was used to add another pipe that connected the shower rod to the suction cup holder.

He then added his traditional shower curtain, or two, and his outdoor shower was ready. Like the shower curtain, you do have a lot of freedom to create your own outdoor shower and maintain dignity and privacy when cleaning up.

Some Shower Curtain Options

Whether you have an indoor or an outdoor shower in your pop-up, it is always good to have options. For the indoor model, we have already given a couple of examples of how to use curtain rods.

Another one is to use bendable lightweight pipe and make sure it can be bent into a rectangle without losing the mobility of the shower curtain hooks. This system does not add a lot of weight to your pop-up but it is durable and strong.

Then for the outside privacy factor, Amazon and other retail outlets sell shower tents. There is a spot to place your shower nozzle so it is in the right position for a good shower. Plus, you have a zip-up door that keeps your showers private.

These shower tents come in different heights so both small and tall people can enjoy a good outdoor shower without becoming nervous or self-conscious.
