Travel insurance as we know it has changed FOREVER

Travel insurance as we know it has changed FOREVER

TravelCard insurance takes the hassle out of overseas travel

Last updated . 30 January 2020

If you’re one of the unlucky four in five Aussie travellers that’s had an issue claiming back on travel insurance, this news from TravelCard means you’ll never have to wait to be compensated ever again…

As it turns out, Aussie travellers have been missing out on hundreds of unclaimed dollars due to current (and let’s face it – outdated) travel insurance claims processes, mainly because so many insurers make it so damn difficult to get your money back

Recognising this problem, TravelCard insurance has quite literally changed the game, creating a real-time debit card that pays insurance claims within minutes of you making them. Yes, you read that correctly.

Unlike other travel insurance providers, instead of having to provide receipts upon your return, their first-of-its-kind travel card is linked to MasterCard, paying you out instantly when you’re stuck in the middle of an airport with a missing suitcase and need to buy underwear.

They also have 24/7 assistance, meaning you can call, claim and collect (in two minutes!!!) anytime.

Currently, the most common incidents that have occurred to Australians when travelling are:

-Delayed flights (32%) -Receiving medical treatment (30%) -Losing, damaging or having your goods stolen (28%)

The TravelCard covers all of these.

Picture this, you’re travelling the Galapagos and your camera falls to the bottom of the ocean. Under this new system of reimbursement, your money can be there within minutes, allowing you to purchase a new camera right then and there – well, at least when you get off the boat.

Or perhaps you’ve been left with a major medical bill after emergency surgery in the US; simply call TravelCard and wait for the money to instantly be deposited onto your card.

Corporate, family, solo – no matter how you travel, we guarantee this will change the insurance game.

As for any potential mishandling of system, Michael Tauber, CEO of TravelCard Australia says that TravelCard’s philosophy is to “assume the best in everyone,” highlighting “all our [sic] customers are trustworthy.” So don’t ruin it for everyone, please.

The company also aims to provide “them with peace of mind through the delivery of real-time solutions and an easy process when needing help abroad, so they can get back to enjoying their holiday.”

Unprofessional and poor service

Took out travel insurance with Travel Card in September 2022 for travel to China in March 2020. Travel company cancelled trip end February 2020. Started claim from Travel Card immediately. “Pandemic “ not a term being used by WHO at this stage. Travel Card claim for refund refused. Phone call from them unsatisfactory. Email follow up inferred we had cancelled not travel company and quoted pandemic in T&Cs. 2 days before proposed travel date in March, Travel Card sent 2 SMS advising us to “ take care & have a happy & safe trip”!!! Doesnt even rate a star - had to note one to post review.

Pathetic is a kind word for this organisation. I am in the same situation as other people - taken out well before the onset of Covid-19, and a pro-rata refund. In addition, rude staff. After asking the operator to contact me by email as she had called me during my workday, she ignored my request and continued talking. Will NEVER touch this company again.

Other Travel Insurance

I took out travel insurance last October for travel this coming June. This insurance was taken out well before COVID-19 was even a thing! When I called to ask if I could claim recovery of my costs was told not covered because its a pandemic. So then I decide to cancel insurance. I am then told I am being penalised for taking insurance out so early as they will only pay me pro-rata! Are you kidding me. This is not stated in your product disclosure statement so I will take it further if I don't get a full refund. Mind you I have been in contac... Read more

Useless Now that we're in a Pandemic

Purchased a policy for China back on 25/09/2019 - yes last year. Now the policy is useless. Whilst I am not travelling to china until August this year, they dont cover anything now that it's deemed a pandemic. I have tried to speak to them via live chat, which is also hopeless. I did speak to someone who advised sorry, we don't cover you now, even though I bought it back in 2022, So the questions I have is why bother buying travel insurance ??? Next time i will go with covermore and use their cancel for any reason.

I took this insurance out before the Coronavirus was known. However, this insurer was very quick to drop your cover. What is the point in having Travel insurance? To cover you for the unknown like any insurance. Well Coronavirus was unknown when I took out the insurance. The good guys in insurance I think not. However, their policy can contradict each other in that you must abide by the Government. So if they say do not travel. You obey that clause of their policy but they won't pay cancellation cost because of it. Find another travel insurer.

Thank you for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

We understand that this is frustrating for you, and we are equally concerned that you have had this negative experience. That being said, like... Read more

Extreme difficulty trying to top up card.

Not able to use website to add trip to existing card. Rang number on 4-5 occasions and was told each time they could only help me with a claim an someone would phone me back. This took place over a 3 week period. One lady told me she could not provide a policy for us. A gentleman rang after this and said we needed documentation from my partner’s specialist. My wife and myself did not claim on this trip but my daughter and family on a separate policy did. My daughter got Bali Belly and required 3 visits from a doctor plus antibiotics. Great travel insurance

Policy was good value. The only drawback is you must send in a form as there is no online booking system available for their travel insurance. The best part is you get a Mastercard Debit Card so if anything happens overseas Travelcard puts $$ on to the card for use immediately. This Debit Card is valid for 2-3 years so you just keep this for any claims through Travelcard moving forward.

I’m enquiring about Level 4 travel ban. Are we entitled to a refund on premium paid???

If our pending trip is cancelled due to pandemic do we get a refund of our premium paid Purchased on 10/1/2020?

Terry B asked 2 months ago

If the airline cancels the flight am I still covered by insurance?

Your coverage will depend on the reason for why the airline cancelled your flights e.g. Strikes, weather, hijack, civil protest or accident.

Generally if the airline cancels a flight due to something that is within their control like engineering issues or issues relating to the operating of the flight e.g staffing requirements then there would not be coverage.

We advise that if you are overseas and your flight is cancelled please call our on trip assistance team on +61 2 7909 2777 OR if you are still in Australia and would like further clarification call 1300 123 413.

Terry B 2 months ago

If we need to cancel out trip, due to unforeseen circumstances eg illness does insurance cover all the accommodation cancellation fees as well as airfares?

Cheers for your enquiry.

Regarding cancellation due to illness, we will require medical documentation to confirm you cannot travel. In addition to this, we require confirmation of the diagnosis and the date of diagnosis. It’s a policy requirement to determine if the condition that has caused you to cancel is a pre-existing medical condition or not.

Please contact our claims team if you wish to discuss further

11 Best Travel Insurance Companies in April 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

If the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that travelers need to be prepared for the unexpected — from a pandemic to flight troubles to the crowded airport terminals so many of us have encountered.

Whether you’re looking for an international travel insurance plan, emergency medical care or a policy that includes extreme sports, these are the best travel insurance providers to get you covered.

How we found the best travel insurance

We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

Read our full analysis about the average cost of travel insurance so you can budget better for your next trip.

However, depending on the plan, you may be able to customize at an added cost.

As we continue to evaluate more travel insurance companies and receive fresh market data, this collection of best travel insurance companies is likely to change. See our full methodology for more details.

  • Plan available for business travelers.
  • Cancel For Any reason coverage only available for higher-level plans, and only reimburses up to 50% of the trip cost.

On top of more standard trip protections like trip cancellation, interruption, baggage and medical coverage, the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade is available on certain Travel Guard plans, which allows you to cancel a trip for any reason and get 50% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as the trip is canceled at least two days before the scheduled departure date.

  • Travelers can extend coverage mid-trip.
  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.
  • No pre-existing medical condition waivers are available.

Many travel insurance plans contain exclusions for adventure sports activities. If you plan to ski, bungee jump, windsurf or parasail, this might be a plan to consider.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

What else makes World Nomads great:

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

Coverage available for adventure activities, such as trekking, mountain biking and scuba diving.

Best for medical coverage: Travelex Insurance Services

insurance-product-card-logo

Travelex Insurance Services

  • Top-tier plan doesn’t break the bank and provides more customization opportunities.
  • Offers a plan specifically for domestic travel.
  • Sells a post-departure medical coverage plan.
  • Fewer customization opportunities on the Basic plan.
  • Though perhaps a plus for domestic travelers, keep in mind the Travel America plan only covers domestic trips.

For starters, basic coverage from Travelex Insurance Services came in at $125, almost exactly average for our sample trip.

Travelex’s plans focus heavily on providing protections that are personalized to your travel style and trip type.

While the company does offer comprehensive plans that include medical benefits, you can also choose between cheaper plans that don’t provide cancellation coverage but do offer protections during your travels.

Read our full review of Travelex Insurance Services .

Best if you have travel credit card coverage: Seven Corners

insurance-product-card-logo

Seven Corners

  • Annual, medical-only and backpacker plans are available.
  • Cancel For Any Reason upgrade is available for the cheapest plan.
  • Cheapest plan also features a much less costly Interruption for Any Reason add-on.
  • Offers only one annual policy option.

Each Seven Corners plan offers several optional add-ons. Among the more unique is a Trip Interruption for Any Reason, which allows you to interrupt a trip 48 hours after the scheduled departure date (for any reason) and receive a refund of up to 75% of your unused nonrefundable deposits.

The basic coverage plan for our trip to Mexico costs $124 — right around the average.

What else makes Seven Corners great:

Comprehensive plans for U.S. residents and foreigners, including travelers visiting the U.S.

Cheap add-ons for rental car damage, sporting equipment rental or trip interruption for any reason.

Best for long-term travelers: IMG

insurance-product-card-logo

  • Coverage available for adventure travelers.
  • Special medical insurance for ship captains and crew members, international students and missionaries.
  • Claim approval can be lengthy.

While some travel insurance companies offer just a handful of plans, with IMG, you’ll really have your pick. Though this requires a bit more research, it allows you to search for coverage that fits your travel needs.

However, travelers will want to be aware that IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel Lite is expensive. Coming in at $149.85, it’s the costliest plan on our list.

What else makes IMG great:

More affordable than average.

Many plans to choose from to fit your needs.

Best for travelers with unpredictable work demands: Tin Leg

insurance-product-card-logo

  • In addition Cancel For Any Reason, some plans offer cancel for work reason coverage.
  • Adventure sports-specific coverage is available.
  • Plans have overlap that can be hard to distinguish.
  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

Best for booking travel with points and miles: TravelSafe

insurance-product-card-logo

  • Covers up to $300 redepositing points and miles on eligible canceled award flights.
  • Optional add-on protection for business equipment or sports rentals.
  • Multi-trip or year-long plans aren’t available.

Selecting your travel insurance plan with TravelSafe is a fairly straightforward process. The company’s website also makes it easy to visualize how optional add-on elements influence the total cost, displaying the final price as soon as you click the coverage.

However, at $136, the Basic plan was among the more expensive for our trip to Mexico.

What else makes TravelSafe great:

Rental car damage coverage add-on is available on both plans.

Cancel For Any Reason coverage available on the TravelSafe Classic plan.

Best for group travel insurance: HTH Insurance

insurance-product-card-logo

HTH offers single-trip and multitrip medical insurance coverage as well as trip protection plans.

At around $125, the Trip Protector Economy policy is at the average mark for plans we reviewed.

You can choose to insure group trips for educators, crew, religious missionaries and corporate travelers.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

The following destinations are the top insured destinations in 2024, according to Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner).

The Bahamas.

Costa Rica.

Antarctica.

In 2022, travelers spent about 25.53% more on trips than they did before the pandemic.

As of December, NerdWallet analysis determined travel prices are 10% higher than pre-pandemic. Each statistic makes a strong case for protecting your travel investment as you plan your next trip.

10 credit cards that provide travel insurance.

Here is the list of travel cards offered by Chase that include various forms of travel insurance.

Having one of these in your wallet is a good start to protecting your travel investments and preventing expensive accidents; however, savvy travelers check card terms closely and sometimes supplement with a third-party policy, like from one of the companies above, to better protect themselves.

• Trip interruption: Up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip.

• Baggage delay: Up to $100 per day for three days.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Innovation in Travel Insurance

Posted on: June 9, 2019

Do you have a good understanding of travel insurance, or do you find it confusing and a bit of a hassle? We could have good news for you. There’s a relatively new option on the market, TravelCard which is a real-time travel insurance option. AND, GIA can help organise the TravelCard insurance solution for you!

Travel Insurance with TravelCard

Travelcard has three simple steps:.

  • You buy a TravelCard insurance policy.
  • You receive the Travelcard in the mail.
  • If anything goes wrong while you’re away, funds can be instantly transferred to your card.

TravelCard has basically turned the claims process on its head – by paying you first and asking questions later (if at all). While this might sound too good to be true, there is some method to TravelCard’s madness.TravelCard uses data to look at claims of all different kinds, and look for patterns of what a ‘reasonable and customary’ claim looks like. If your claim fits this pattern, they’ll transfer the funds onto your card straight away.

But according to TravelCard CEO Michael Tauber , it’s not just big data that sets them apart. He says it’s the trust they place in their customers that is the real differentiator. In fact, looking at big data is only the second step of TravelCard’s verification process. The first “step” being:  “we choose to trust our members and believe what they say” .

“The one real word that differentiates us is ‘trust’. We like to think of ourselves as a family-based organisation and we treat our customers like family, choosing to assume the best in everyone,” Tauber told finder.

TravelCard’s strategy is a simple one. The increased frequency of payouts is offset by low admin costs and a high rate of repeat business. Tauber says 86% of customers purchase again and many of them refer friends and family.

Corporate Travel Insurance & Personal/Leisure Cover

There are three types of TravelCard cover. Businesses can opt for corporate travel insurance. Individuals can get leisure cover, and there’s also a ‘business class’ for employees which is relatively new.

TravelCard working on Australia comeback

06 june 2022.

TravelCard says its Australian business, placed in “hibernation” since October 2020 due to the pandemic, will offer “superior products” and “better user experience” when it resumes operations.

The broker-focused travel insurer is working to “restart” the local business, Corporate Ventures CEO Leor Catalan says.

TravelCard’s decision comes after Australia lifted its “Do Not Travel” global advisory in November last year, paving the way for insurers to again offer large-scale travel insurance sales. During the ban, residents required government permission to travel outside the country.

“We are super excited that international travel from Australia has finally resumed,” Mr Catalan told insurance NEWS .com.au.

“TravelCard is indeed working to restart operations in Australia with superior products and a better user experience than ever before.”

The “hibernation” applied only to quoting and issuance of new policies, with the business continuing to provide claims support for in-force policies during this period.

“While we hibernated new sales in Australia due to the restrictions on international travel, we maintained high service standards for previously sold policies continuously,” Mr Catalan said.

“We believe that, now more than ever, travellers appreciate travel insurance providers that offer more than just a financial arrangement, and are there to support them in real-time.”

Part of UK-based PassportCard Group, TravelCard launched its Australian business in June 2018 focusing on the broking channel.

Its policies, until the hibernation, were underwritten by Hollard and it was Steadfast’s travel insurance provider.

Hollard says it has no comment at this time on TravelCard’s plans to resume its operations here and Steadfast has been approached for a comment on the status of its working arrangement with the insurer.

In a separate announcement, TravelCard says it has been granted a US patent for an application it developed to enable real-time claims payout through a debit card. With the debit card, customers get access to a global and 100% cashless insurance service.

“With our technology being recognised to be unique, and other pending patents for additional innovation in customer experience, we are in a stronger position than ever to expand into additional territories,” TravelCard Group President Alon Ketzef said.

“We look forward to this next exciting step in our mission to bring seamless and fuss-free insurance to the masses.”

How to use CLEAR for stadiums and arenas in 2024

travelcard real time travel insurance

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

Heading to a game can be exhilarating—but if you’ve ever seen the long lines to get in, you can imagine how that excitement wanes as you’re standing outside, sometimes in sweltering heat, instead of getting through to your seats.

CLEAR has partnered with over a dozen locations in the U.S. to allow members quick access to bypass the normal long lines and get inside to enjoy the game quicker than ever before. And, while you might be familiar with the paid CLEAR Plus membership that helps you speed through the airport, you can access CLEAR Sports and Events for free.

What is CLEAR?

CLEAR was designed as a biometric program allowing travelers who pay a membership fee and pass a simple check to bypass the standard ID verification at security checkpoints in airports.

A major choke point in airports is almost always the security line, and CLEAR allows its members to either scan their eyes or their fingerprints to verify that they are who they say they are. The CLEAR lines are typically much shorter, and you get to bypass the long security wait, head to the front, show the TSA officer your boarding pass, and you’re on your way.

Note that to use CLEAR to speed through the airport, you need a CLEAR Plus membership, which typically costs $189 per year for an individual or $189 a year plus $99 per person for a family membership. But there’s good news on two fronts—first, the right credit card might cover your CLEAR Plus subscription. For example, the American Express® Green Card charges a modest $150 annual fee and offers a credit of up to $189 annually to reimburse CLEAR Plus.

The second thing to get excited about is that you don’t need CLEAR Plus to use CLEAR at eligible stadiums and arenas. You just need the free membership option and the mobile app.

All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Fortune Recommends™ .

American Express® Green Card

Intro bonus, reward rates.

  • 3x Earn 3X Membership Rewards points in expanded travel categories
  • 1x Earn 3X points on eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and delivery in the U.S)
  • All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Fortune Recommends™.
  • High earnings on travel and dining
  • Membership Rewards points are valuable and flexible
  • CLEAR Plus credit
  • High annual fee for a mid-level travel card
  • No trip cancelation insurance
  • Additional benefits include a $100 LoungeBuddy benefit, trip delay and secondary car rental insurance
  • Foreign transaction fee: None

What is CLEAR for Stadiums and Arenas?

Whether you’re a CLEAR Plus airport member, or just have a complimentary membership after signing up for the CLEAR app, you get access to CLEAR for Sports and Events. The free designated CLEAR lanes at stadiums allow all members to enter the various participating venues faster through these exclusive entrances.

travelcard real time travel insurance

The CLEAR lanes aren’t at each entrance at the arenas and stadiums, but there will typically be one or two special areas at the events that allow you fast, almost unfettered access.

How do I use CLEAR at stadiums?

The process couldn’t be any easier. You’ll need the CLEAR app, but the process is very straightforward.

First, download the CLEAR app (there’s no charge for this) and navigate to the Sports and Events tab.

travelcard real time travel insurance

Next, click “Get Started” and follow the enrollment steps. You’ll need to take a quick selfie to unlock the QR code in the app. This QR code is what you’ll show to the attendant to get through—then you can wave at everyone back waiting in the other security lines.

Where can I use CLEAR at stadiums and events?

Currently there are more than 15 locations across the U.S. that you can utilize your CLEAR app and get through to your game or event quicker than ever before.

Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, NV

The special entry lanes are at North Entry via lanes 49 and 50. CLEAR Lane is available at all Raiders home games, concerts, and events.

BMO Stadium, Los Angeles, CA

There are two entrances, at both the Northeast gate and the Northwest gates. CLEAR Lanes are available at Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC home games and select events.

Ball Arena, Denver, CO

You’ll find CLEAR at the Altitude Authentics entrance. If you’re heading to a Nuggets or Avalanche game or a special event, CLEAR will be open.

Barclays Center, New York, NY

If you’re heading inside from the Flatbush Avenue entrance, you’ll see both the normal and CLEAR entrances. CLEAR Lane is available at Nets and Liberty home games and all concerts and events.

Capital One Arena, Washington, DC

Head over to the 7th & G street at Gallery Place to find the CLEAR dedicated lane. CLEAR Lane is available at all Capitals and Wizards home games.

Chase Center, San Francisco, CA

Of all the entrances at the Chase Center, only the West entrance has the CLEAR lane. Warriors home games, concerts, and special events all will have CLEAR Lane access.

travelcard real time travel insurance

Coors Field, Denver, CO

Of all the gates at Coors Field, if you’re heading to the C gate, you’ll be rewarded with a CLEAR lane. Expect your lanes to be available at all Rockies home games, concerts, and events.

Kayesa Center, Miami, FL

Two options for CLEAR exist for the Miami Heat gates, at both gates 1 and 2. If the Heat are playing at home, the lanes will be open.

Lumen Field, Seattle, WA

The Seahawks and the Sounders both share Lumen Field in the Emerald City, and gate 3 holds your CLEAR experience. The CLEAR lane might not be available for special events, as its limited to only the home games for the sports teams.

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

Chase B and Chase C at the MSG are your entrances. Look for them off of 8th avenue. CLEAR Lanes are available at all Rangers and Knicks home games, concerts, and events which is a big deal, considering the amount of special events that MSG holds.

Nationals Park, Washington, DC

Head to the center field gate with your QR code for fast access to Nationals Park. CLEAR Lane is available only for Nationals home games.

Oracle Park, San Francisco, CA

The Willie Mays Plaza houses the CLEAR entrance for anything happening at the Oracle Park. The CLEAR lane will be open for baseball games, but also for concerts and special events.

SAP Center, San Jose, CA

CLEAR access is at the South Gate for the SAP Center in San Jose, CA. If the Sharks are playing hockey at home, CLEAR has you covered.

SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, CA

CLEAR can be found at gate 9 at the South Entrance at the SoFi stadium. Whether you’re seeing the Chargers or the Rams play, or heading to a concert or special event, expect to virtually fly through.

State Farm Arena, Atlanta, GA

Head straight down to your next Atlanta Hawks game at check out the CLEAR entrance at Gate 6. CLEAR Lane is available at all Hawks home games, concerts, and events.

T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV

Skip the line and the red velvet rope.  Feel like a VIP in Vegas at the CLEAR lanes at the Hyde Suite VIP entrance. Since this arena is a multi use event space, you’ll be able to have CLEAR access for all Vegas Golden Knights home games and all concerts and events.

Yankee Stadium, New York, NY

Head on over to the Babe Ruth Plaza and Suite entrance and gate 4 for your CLEAR access. CLEAR Lanes are available at all Yankees and New York City FC home games, concerts, and events.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost extra to use clear at stadiums.

Using CLEAR at stadiums is absolutely free, so long as you’re a member and have the CLEAR app downloaded on your phone. You don’t need to be a CLEAR Plus airport member in order to use this service, but if you are, it’s included via your app.

Can I bring a friend with me through CLEAR at stadiums?

Unlike at the airport where every person using CLEAR must be a paid member, you’re allowed to bring one friend with you through the entrance at each stadium where CLEAR has a lane. Children under the age of 18 don’t need a pass and can always come through when accompanied by an adult.

Is using CLEAR worth it for stadiums and events?

Using CLEAR helps you skip the line to enjoy quick access to your event—but since CLEAR lanes are limited to certain entrances, plan out your path into the venue strategically. Stadiums can be pretty big, so if your seat is on the complete opposite side of the entrance that offers CLEAR, it may not be worth the extra walk.

How many stadiums and arenas offer CLEAR access?

At the time of this writing, 17 stadiums and arenas offer CLEAR lanes. These include Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Kaseya Center in Miami, and more.

Does my free CLEAR membership provide airport benefits?

While a free CLEAR membership can get you into eligible stadiums faster, it does not provide any airport benefits. For that, you need the paid CLEAR Plus plan. However, certain credit cards will reimburse you for charging a CLEAR membership to your account.

The Amex Green, mentioned above, is an affordable option. For those able to make use of more extensive travel benefits and tolerate a higher annual fee, the The Platinum Card® from American Express provides a $189 yearly credit for CLEAR (in exchange for an annual fee of $695).
