Trip Itinerary

Day 1: depart from new york (jfk), days 2-4: athens > delphi > nafplio.

Go back in time almost 4,000 years where Western civilization was born and the then-new ideas about philosophy, government, and democracy thrived. We will start off our travels with a picnic lunch in the gardens, strolling through some of the best neighborhoods in Athens, and finishing off our first evening with an incredible Greek feast in the heart of historical Athens. The next few days will be filled with culture and history. Stand atop the magnificent Acropolis and imagine ancient Greek life as you marvel at the architectural wonder of the Parthenon. Return to the modern city and wander among the lively markets full of fresh food and authentic handmade goods and learn to cook Greek specialities while you’re there. Go off the beaten path to the charming Plaka district, beautifully lit up at night and lined with adorable cafes and restaurants. Visit the Pnyx to see where democracy was born, and to capture those paralleled views of the city at sunset.

Many other incredible sites await us outside the city of Athens. Visit the mystical Delphi, home to the Oracle that initiated the story of Oedipus. This mysterious and spiritual place will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on you.

Take an excursion out to Nafplio, the small Venetian town that was the first capital of Greece. Stop at the famous Corinthian Canal and explore a fortress that was built in the 19th century with stunning views of the coast. We will wander the winding cobblestone streets of Nafplio that are reminiscent of the Venetian occupation. You will feel like you have been transported to Italy for a day! The rest of our time in Nafplio will be spent soaking up the sun at a gorgeous beach.

DAYS 5-8: PAROS

Leaving Athens, we will travel the way the Greeks do–cruising by ferry over the turquoise Mediterranean waters. Our next destination is Paros, an island famous in ancient times for its immaculate white marble and for having sided in battle with the Persians against the Greeks! We’ll get a tour of the island, where we’ll learn about traditional island life, past and present, with our afternoon saved for sun, sea. There will be plenty of fun activities on offer including, windsurfing, beach volleyball and swimming in the crystal blue waters. We will also hike the historical Byzantine road for some amazing views of the Cycladic island landscape, pass through beautiful white-washed villages, and end the walk in a fortified village!

DAYS 9-11: SANTORINI

Next stop is an island of dramatic red and black sand beaches, whitewashed homes and cobblestone alleyways–this is one of the world’s premier luxury travel destinations and the most spectacular of all the Greek islands. You’ll recognize the postcard-perfect town of Oia, famous for its blue domes and whitewashed houses, and even have the option of taking a scuba-diving class! We will wander the island’s quaint streets, soak up the sun, enjoy the laidback island lifestyle, eat fresh local cuisine, and experience what makes Greece a truly unique summer destination. The pool of our hotel overlooks the sea, as do the terraces where we dine – what could be better?

DAY 12: ATHENS

We’ll return to Athens for one last goodbye, and catch some sights we may have missed the first time around. Visit the Ancient Agora which was the first central square in Athens, the birth of government and democracy in ancient times. Pick up a pair of custom made leather sandals from a famous sandal maker, get in any last minute shopping and savor your last Greek gyro! To finish our incredible Greek journey, we’ll capture the sunset from the Pnyx and enjoy a fancy final dinner at a traditional Greek taverna overlooking the Acropolis lit up at night.

"Thank you so much for all your work, everyone. What an incredible trip. I am so impressed by how varied and organized and amazing each day seemed. I know Alma has had a life-changing experience. That was exactly what we wanted--after the pandemic and the world being what it is...It's so wonderful to see these young people having this beautiful experience." Tina Rumford, RI
"I wanted to thank you for a fantastic trip for Kayla. She was very excited but also very anxious about this trip. I heard from her a lot the first few days but was really encouraging her to advocate for herself. It sounds like she worked on doing that and relayed the positive outcomes of conversing with you. That was a big deal for us. In addition to that it sounds like an amazing trip, and never having been to Greece I’m envious! I hope that you enjoyed your time as well.Thank you so much for your updates, support, and for working with my daughter. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer." Sheri C. Manhasset, NY
"This trip…my goodness!!! When we hear from Jordan, he is beyond happy! He has said that “this is the best time he’s ever had” and things “couldn't be better”. Based on the photos, your blogs and the things he tells us, he is not going to want to come home!! Thank you, Vianeli and Hana for making this an experience of a lifetime!" Holly B. Frequently Asked Questions

See All FAQs

What kind of teen typically participates in this program? What are the requirements to join?

Teens from all over the world join this program! Typically, our participants are culturally curious  individuals who are excited to make new friends, experience something unique, and interested in stepping out of their comfort zones and expanding their horizons.

This program is exclusively for students who are currently in 9th or 10th grade and approximately 14 to 16 years old. Students living outside of the USA are welcome to join!

Where do we stay?

Our hotels are chosen specifically in safe areas and are well suited to facilitating group supervision. We stay in centrally located accommodations, usually within walking distance of the main attractions. We do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities; we prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

In Athens we stay at a great hotel only a five minute walk in the center of Athens near Syntagma. Travelers average between 2-4 per room. On Paros we stay in the capital of Paroikia in a beautiful hotel close to the port and 2 minutes from the beach. On Santorini, we stay next to Fira in one of the most photogenic spots on the island. On the islands, both of our hotels have pools.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for the program.

Do most travelers go on their own?

Yes! In fact, over 75% of students who travel with us choose to come independently. This encourages teens to step further outside their comfort zone and make new friends. We believe that one of the most rewarding and exciting elements of travel is the new friendships that form along the way. When we travel by ourselves, we are bound to make new friends from all over the country and even the world. The best part is, you can travel again with your new friends on another TFT program the next summer!

If you are thinking about joining a TFT program by yourself but you are feeling unsure, please let us know! We have plenty of references from solo travelers who had great experiences and would be happy to chat with you about it.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! We ask that if you do come with a friend, you and your friend(s) maintain openness to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.

What do students like most about the Greece: Athens & the Islands trip?

On the Greece: Athens & the Islands trip, students love that they are able to explore the hottest destinations in Greece, while also discovering some lesser known gems. Paros tends to be a favorite; everyone loves its laidback island vibe and gorgeous beaches. Teens also love that they are able to discover the culture and history of Greece while exploring Athens and contrast their experiences in the city with the charm of the Greek islands.

What is unique about the Greece: Athens & the Islands trip?

We have strong local connections in Greece and offer exclusive activities like a Greek coffee tasting at a local shop and a traditional cooking lesson in the culinary heart of Athens. Our Greece: Athens & the Islands program is completely unique from anything you would find anywhere else!

What is included?

Tuition cost includes ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list) : airfare; lunches; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

How do the optional group flights work?

Upon registration, you will be contacted by our International Logistics Team to discuss the program’s flight details. There is no requirement to take the group flight, but there are several advantages to doing so. The group flight is usually chaperoned by a TFT staff member, and it also offers an opportunity for the students to get to know one another prior to the start of the program. Parents are responsible for coordinating transport to the departure airport – however, the logistics team will send out instructions detailing the exact meeting spot and airport point person. For additional information about flights, visit our dedicated flight page.

Who leads the program?

Our staff is a cut above the rest! We seek out two main characteristics in our counselors – extensive knowledge of and experience in our destinations, and a passion for working with teens. Our staff’s backgrounds include living abroad and working in summer camps or other educational settings. Team members are proven leaders and role models, who connect easily with others and form genuine friendships with each student – all while bringing each destination to life.

We celebrate diversity! Our staff represents 49 different nationalities, speak a combined total of 21 languages, and visited 142 countries. Additionally, 80% of our staff lived or worked abroad in their lives. With so many unique experiences to share, you are sure to gain a global perspective.

Our average minimum ratios are one staff member to every seven participants. Each program has one Trip Director with several support staff, depending on the group size. Directors must be at least 25 years old within the calendar year and have prior experience working with TFT.

What are the safety qualifications for our staff?

Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.  We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.

What is the average group size?

We pride ourselves on small group sizes to create a more authentic and personalized experience. Our group sizes fall between 13 and 24 students – the perfect size to facilitate new friendships without feeling lost in a crowd! We believe smaller groups eliminate the likelihood of cliques, and allows for a well-rounded, healthy group dynamic.

How does this program connect to other programs?

Our program dates are designed specifically so that participants can opt to combine trips throughout the summer.  When connecting to another program, your counselor will escort you to the airport on the last day of the program and assist you in meeting your next group at your new destination.

What is the food like on this program?

In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!

In Greece, we will enjoy class Greek cuisine, including the original Greek salad with mouth-watering tomatoes and locally made feta, famous grilled meats and fresh seafood, and world-renowned baklava. The secret to Greek food is the fresh, simple ingredients, and you’ll begin to understand why this is the secret to one of the best diets in the world: the Mediterranean diet! We also love to have picnics al fresco, and do this whenever possible, which is a great way to taste some local food while sitting out in the fresh air taking in the sights and sounds of our surroundings.

Of course, we are always willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Do we ever get time to go off on our own?

Our staff and teens are nearly always together, but we do provide the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to allow for flexibility and customization within the itinerary.

We offer free time in defined safe areas – for example, shopping in a market or exploring a museum. During these times, students remain in groups of at least two and are given no more than an hour. Of course, the counselors remain nearby and available. Additionally, a lifeguard-certified counselor supervises the campers any time they are involved in water activities.

Do I need any vaccinations for this program?

We recommend checking with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the destination you are visiting. For more information, please check the World Health Organization’s website . Upon registration, we provide a list of recommended vaccinations that can be discussed further with your doctor. For Specific questions pertaining to the COVID-19 vaccine, click here .

What kind of visa do you need for this trip?

Any US citizen that enters Europe is automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.

When joining a TFT trip from outside of the US, please be sure to check your country’s specific visa requirements.

Do I need to speak the language?

No, our skilled staff members will help you get around and even teach you a few fun phrases!

Tips for Student Travelers in Greece

In Greece, students with proper identification (ISIC and IYC cards) are given reduced entrance fees to archaeological sites and museums, as well as discounts on admission to most artistic events, theatrical performances, and festivals. So you'd be wise to arm yourself with an International Student Identity Card (ISIC), which offers substantial savings on rail passes, plane tickets, and entrance fees. It also provides you with basic health and life insurance and a 24-hour help line. The card is available for $22 from STA Travel (tel. 800/781-4040; www.statravel.com), the biggest student travel agency in the world.

The International Student Travel Confederation ( ISTC; www.istc.org) was formed in 1949 to make travel around the world more affordable for students. Check out its website for comprehensive travel services information for students.

If you're no longer a student but are still under 26, you can get an International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) from the same people, which entitles you to some discounts. Travel CUTS (tel. 800/592-2887; www.travelcuts.com) offers similar services for both Canadians and U.S. residents. Irish students may prefer to turn to USIT (tel. 01/602-1906; www.usit.ie), an Ireland-based specialist in student, youth, and independent travel.

A Hostelling International membership can save students money in some 5,000 HI hostels in 70 countries (including Greece), where sex-segregated, dormitory-style sleeping quarters cost about $15 to $35 per night. In Greece, an International Guest Card can be obtained at the Greek Association of Youth Hostels (OESE), in Athens at 75 Dhamereos, Athens 11633 (tel. 210/751-9530; www.athens-yhostel.com).

Whether you saw Mamma Mia! or read Homer’s The Odyssey, everyone knows the cerulean seas, clear skies, and white sand shores of Greece. While you might daydream of falling in love with a beautiful Grecian, what is it like studying abroad in Greece? We can tell you there won’t be women running down the streets singing “Dancing Queen.”

group of study abroad students standing in front of the parthenon

You’ll have the chance to write your own fairytale in Greece.

You can expect cities of rich cultural heritage built around ancient ruins still seen today. You can expect to eat real feta— not the watery boxed kind you find in the supermarket. You can expect a seemingly laissez-faire attitude to the locals and will quickly get accustomed to something called “Greek time.”

Still not convinced? That’s okay! For many students, this might be the first time you’re leaving home or traveling alone. So, we have compiled a list of 8 things to know about studying abroad in Greece before you go! Voulez-Vous?

Why study abroad in Greece?

So, besides the tropical climes, why should you study abroad in Greece ? Imagine walking down the streets of Athens , a coffee and a koulouri in hand, admiring ancient ruins right under your feet. The city encases their found artifacts and sites in glass, turning the entire city into a walking museum . This is a way to preserve their historical legacy that mutually benefits the public.

Students can get a hands-on learning experience in the birthplace of modern philosophy , architecture , politics , medicine , literature , and much more. And of course, there are the most well-known sites, such as the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Zeus, to name a few.

The historical sites in Greece will take your breath away.

Worried about spending money on museums and travel ? Have no fear! There are free admission days, student passes, and discounts at many museums and sites. Greece is a very affordable place to travel. The cost of basic goods, food, and public transit tends to be much cheaper than the United States.

Considering the cultural, educational, and personal benefits , Greece is a great place to study abroad. But…what’s it actually like, and what can you expect?

What is it like studying abroad in Greece? 8 tips to know

Alright, let’s get down to business. You want the inside scoop on the things to know about studying abroad in Greece. Whether you are an experienced traveler or a complete newbie, everyone can benefit from a little inside knowledge. Here are 8 studying abroad in Greece tips that you need to know before packing that suitcase .

1. Journal, blog, write, or do something to record your experience.

study abroad student posing on a roof top in fira, greece

Try your best to take note of how you grow throughout your study abroad experience.

While it may be a cliché, your future self will thank you for jotting down those memories . Write down something that shocked you that day. Blog about every new food you tried. Make a photo journal of your travel group standing at the top of every mountain. While it’s a fine line to walk, try to balance being in the moment and recording for posterity.

2. Light layers and comfortable sneakers are a must.

Greece is a city of ruins, and you will be hiking up and down these ruins a lot! Fun fact, the Acropolis overlooks Athens, so there are quite a few steps to the top. It’s about a 20-minute hike, and is well worth it.

But consider your Acropolis hike to be the standard, so comfortable shoes are a must! Similarly, there are some chilly breezes at the top, so bringing a light jacket tucked into a backpack is a good idea.

3. Go get lost.

This might seem like unusual advice, but you must explore your city in order to get the most out of your experience. Now, this is all within reason. Bring along some friends or be brave and ask some random people in your program to come on your adventure .

Keep your wits about you and your important items tucked away at all times. Make sure you explore in broad daylight and start walking closer to home at night. We promise, your favorite place in Greece will be a hidden gem you found while you were exploring.

4. Befriend some locals.

The friends you make will be what you remember the most about your experience!

Cafés, bakeries, and sweet shops are a way of life in Greece. Every town and city will be littered with dozens of each, but most likely you will find one that you gravitate towards. Maybe it’s on your way to school or right next to your favorite grocery store. Either way, it will pay to be friends with your local café owner.

Start with a smile, end with a compliment. Greek people tend to be friendly and curious and will be happy to chat. You might learn the restaurant with the best moussaka, the museums that are a must-see, or the city’s best views. Or you might just get a good conversation with your coffee. Either way, it’s a win.

5. Explore the closer (and cheaper) islands.

While Mykonos and Santorini are the most famous islands, they can also be touristy, overpriced, and overcrowded. And, to many people's surprise, these islands are further away from the mainland than you might think.

There are two ways to get to the islands: by plane or by ferry. Obviously, the ferry is less expensive but takes a few hours on the sea. The plane ride is much faster, usually about an hour, but prices increase during peak season. This makes impromptu visits to those islands much harder. So, if you want to visit these islands, we recommend planning ahead by several months .

Instead, think about visiting one of Greece’s closer and cheaper islands like Aegina, Hydra, or Corfu. All are less than an hour away and around 10 euros per ferry ticket.

Don’t let fear hold you back from memorable experiences!

Dancing is a huge part of Greek culture, and you will frequently see men and women dance during lunch or dinner. This tradition speaks to the very heart of their culture. While it might seem unusual to us, it’s far better to join the revelry.

There is a freedom you gain when you shed your self-consciousness and give yourself to the Kalamatiano. Dances bring the community together, and who knows? You might land next to the Greek boy or girl of your dreams. Isn’t that the dream?

7. Say “yes” to everything (almost).

While it’s scary to leave your comfort zone , this is a unique opportunity that may not come along again! While you should use your common sense, try to do as much as you can. This can be making new friends within your program, trying new foods, or taking spontaneous trips.

Flights within Europe tend to be much cheaper , so a spur of the moment trip to Bulgaria, Italy, or Turkey is easy. If you go in with an open mind, you never know where you might end up!

8. Make meaningful connections (maybe for life).

No matter what kind of study abroad program you choose, there will always be students who are in the same boat as you. There will also be many students from different countries, so there are more possibilities to meet someone outside your bubble.

Whether you are friends forever or only for the semester, you will never forget the people you meet abroad. Plus, you could meet someone who could advance your career! There is no such thing as too many connections within the job industry. You can stay in touch through LinkedIn or email, because you never know when you might need a job recommendation.

How to travel to Greece on a student’s budget

Share

Hotel buildings and infinity swimming pools cling to the sides of the imposing caldera cliffs in Oia village on Santorini island

Guest post by Lisa Griffin

Greece is a Eurozone country, and this fact often keeps travelers with a student budget at bay from taking a trip there. Many people think they will require loads of money to travel to Greek resorts. It is a common prejudice which is closely connected to myths that only tycoons and other financial demi-gods  can afford the resorts .

The truth is different. Times of Aristotle Onassis have passed, and now any student can afford cheap holidays to Greece, either taking a trip to a sunny island like Santorini or feeling the antique air of Athens without paying much.

Students’ leisure shouldn`t be expensive!

Cheap Greece vacations are not a dream anymore. Greece is a highly underestimated budget travel destination. Just follow the simple rule – if you are not a millionaire, don`t pretend to be one. Don`t book expensive hotels; eat out in small traditional restaurants, and use low-cost airfare and transport.  Otherwise, you can turn the pleasure of your vacation into endless money wasting.

A statement like this applies to every country in the world – you can say that any city is expensive unless you’re willing to change your habits and try to look for ways to economize.

In Greece,  don’t always go for the most popular places. Local people are usually trying to earn money on tourists not caring if they will be satisfied with their expensive services  – tomorrow the flux of tourists will be all the same.  Check Greek island vacation packages for bargains. Often these packages include delightful spots that aren’t as popular as the mainstream destinations, so you can enjoy low-cost services while having all you need for a good rest and entertainment.

Yet even the more expensive Islands like Santorini are accessible to everyone, since you can usually find hostel accommodation for as little as € 15 per night . it might be a bed in a tent, but do you need more? People travel to Greek Isles not to sit in a hotel, but to see as much as possible and spend time somewhere on a distant beach. The main thing is to have a shower, a kitchen to cook fresh products bought in local markets, wifi, a place to put your stuff, and a bed to sleep.

Fira the capital of Santorini

Fira, the main commercial center on Santorini. Although it’s one of the most expensive places to visit in Greece, Santorini still offers hostel and other cheap accommodations that suit a student budget.

Italy & Greece

Empires of the mediterranean.

Travel to Italy and Greece this summer—where the pillars of Western civilization were built—and dive into the histories of their ancient societies, adventure through their dramatic landscapes, and immerse yourself in the contemporary culture of vibrant cities, towns, and coastal villages. Experience the living legacy of the Greek and Roman Empires against a backdrop of magnificent temples, rich mythology, and stunning seascapes.

students-observing-architecture-italy-lanigan

This itinerary represents our best projection of the group’s schedule. However, we may implement changes designed to improve the quality of the program.

Meet your fellow high school student travelers and one or more of your program leaders in New York, and fly together to Naples, Italy. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

Begin your program by heading to Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities that were blanketed by thick layers of scorching ash and volcanic mud when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. Get to know your peers and program leaders during an in-depth group orientation. Step into the past in palaces still adorned with original frescoes, and see the haunting figures of townspeople frozen in time. From our base in the small city of Salerno, travel by hydrofoil to Capri and Amalfi, and explore the area’s extraordinary scenery. Hike up to the top of Mount Vesuvius and take in the views of the sprawling Italian coastline below. Take a refreshing swim from the rocky shoreline, make homemade pizza with a local chef, and practice Italian in seaside shops.

Travel by train to Rome and explore the streets and alleyways of this vibrant city with your group, finding hidden parks and ruins. Peer into the gaping Bocca della Verità, a sculpted mouth, which according to legend will bite off the hand of anyone who doesn't tell the truth. Interact with street performers and local shopkeepers, sample delicious gelato near the Spanish Steps, and take in the contemporary music scene in one of Rome's many historic piazzas.

Fly to Athens and spend three days exploring the Acropolis and Parthenon, the ancient Agora, and the National Archaeological Museum. Visit iconic works of art at the National Gallery and learn the stories of their excavation. Experience the modern bustling street life, markets, and cuisine, and take a tour of the city’s best contemporary street art.

This small, beautiful city is set on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese in the shadow of a cliff-top castle. From our hotel in the old city, follow small pedestrian streets to a tiny beach, get to know the locals, and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Argos. On day trips, discover the legendary home of Agamemnon at Mycenae; view one of the world's best-preserved Greek theaters at Epidaurus and prepare your own theatrical performance; and learn the basics of traditional Greek dance. Enjoy a farewell dinner of Greek specialties at a family-run restaurant with live music, and tell fireside stories under the stars.

Fly from Athens, Greece, to New York with your group and a leader, then continue on to your final destination. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.

Salerno is our jumping off point to the ruins of Pompeii and the island of Capri. Rome, Italy’s capital city, is a busy center of commerce, tourism, and government, home to many historical, literary, and cultural sites, as well as a lively food, art, fashion, and entertainment scene. In Greece, we begin in Athens, one of the world’s oldest cities, which provides ample opportunities to explore modern life and collections of Greek antiquity. Our final destination, Náfplio is a seaport town on the Peloponnesian Peninsula jutting into the Gulf of Argos, close to the island of Hydra.

Italian and Greek are the official languages of Italy and Greece, respectively.

Summer weather in Italy and Greece is generally hot. Average daytime temperatures range from 80–90°F (27–32°C), while average nighttime temperatures range from 70–80°F (21–27°C).

Italian cuisine is known for its diverse regional flavors, incorporating fresh ingredients, aromatic herbs, and rich sauces, with popular dishes like pasta, pizza, and risotto. Greek cuisine, on the other hand, embraces the Mediterranean diet with an emphasis on olive oil, fresh seafood, tangy feta cheese, vibrant vegetables, and traditional dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita.

What to Expect

Pursue an independent project and explore an aspect of local culture of particular interest to you—evoke the classical past by photographing the ruins of the Roman Forum, sketch the Parthenon or the Colosseum as they might have appeared thousands of years ago, or create a podcast with interviews of archaeologists working at Pompeii.

This is a physically active summer travel program. Activities include hiking, swimming, and exploring cities on foot. You do not need to be at peak fitness to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are excited about trying all activities.

Proficiency in Italian and Greek is not required. However, if you study these languages in school you will have opportunities to practice while communicating with local people. If you don’t speak Italian and Greek you will have the opportunity to learn some basic language skills.

Throughout Italy and Greece, we stay in small family-run hotels and hostels.

We begin each day with a traditional breakfast at our residence. While we eat many of our lunches and dinners in restaurants, we also purchase supplies for healthy and delicious picnic lunches full of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, breads, and cheeses.

15 of the Best Towns and Cities to Visit in Greece

From historic hillside cities to island destinations, these are 15 of the best towns and cities to visit in Greece.

More than 27 million travelers made their way to Greece in 2022 , visiting the country's gorgeous islands and coastlines, rural towns, and historic capital city of Athens. One look at its landscapes and it's easy to see why travelers dream of visiting Greece — but there's so much more to this Mediterranean nation.

"Everyone knows that Greece boasts stunning crystalline waters that make you want to dive right in and historical sites that whisper tales of the past. Its culinary delights are a perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring its unique cultural riches and vibrant art scene, but what truly sets Greece apart is its people," Christos Stergiou , a travel advisor with True Trips, shared with Travel + Leisure . "Greeks have this incredible gift called philoxenia: hospitality taken to a whole new level. Our True Trips guests always describe the feeling of having new local friends who'll go above and beyond to make their journey unforgettable."

Ready to plan your getaway? Here are 15 of the best cities to visit in Greece.

Yes, a visit to Athens feels obvious, because not only is it the capital city, but it’s also home to the international airport you’ll likely fly into on your visit. That said, Athens is well worth a trip in its own right, as it’s home to some of the most important historical sites on Earth, including the must-see Acropolis. Need more? Here’s how to spend one perfect day in Athens .

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, located in the northern part of the country, offers a blend of history and youthful energy that few cities can match. “I would recommend Thessaloniki for its long and epic history,” Peter Sommer, founder of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. “The historic center of Thessaloniki is filled with an extraordinary series of ancient monuments, many of them part of an imperial palace complex built by the Roman Emperor Galerius and vast in scope."

Sommer added that there are several museums to visit here, including the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. “But history and archaeology aren’t the only reasons to come to Thessaloniki. It’s justly famed for its gastronomy,” Sommer added. “You can savor a huge selection of glorious local dishes and sample a cornucopia of excellent local wines.”

Drive two hours east of Thessaloniki to find another northern city worth exploring — Kastoria. The scenic city sits perched on Lake Orestiada between the Grammos and Vitsi mountains. Visitors can enjoy peaceful boat rides on the lake with any number of outfitters lining the shores, or just watch the local fisherman go to work each day to reel in the catch. Or, book a tour with Adventures With Wine to bike the lake’s shoreline and see all the hidden nooks worth exploring.

“Ioannina truly shines as a city that's a hidden treasure, especially for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers,” Stergiou shared of the city that sits on Lake Pamvotida. It’s a spot that has inspired many creative talents thanks to its epic vistas, but more than that, Stergiou explained, it’s a fantastic home base for exploring more of the northwest region of Greece.

“In addition to the beautiful lake that stands proud as the city’s landmark, the Byzantine castle, the scenic historical center, and the lively neighborhoods, Ioannina is a gateway to countless incredible experiences within a drive of an hour or two. From there, you can take daily trips to some of the most beautiful villages in all of Greece, such as Metsovo or captivating Zagorohoria, filled with breathtaking landscapes and charming stone houses.”

Kalamata, a city well-known for its olive production, is a place where travelers can get lost — in the best way possible. Come stroll its winding cobblestone streets, explore the castle, and visit museums like the Modern Greek Art Gallery for a well-rounded city escape in the Peloponnese region.

Kalambaka, a city located in central Greece, is famous for its unparalleled view of the stunning Meteora. The city sits at the base of the towering rock formations topped with historic monasteries that date back as early as the 11th century. The complex of monasteries is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and you can visit many for a small fee.

There are more than 6,000 Greek islands , and while many come with small populations, the island of Rhodes is positively metropolitan thanks to the city of Rhodes. Home to some 50,000 people, the city is famed for its ancient history and the duality of its New Town and Old Town. While there’s nothing wrong with New Town, Old Town is a walled-off time capsule to the past, and it's one of the largest remaining medieval settlements in Europe.

Nafplio, located in the eastern Peloponnese, is a seaside dream packed with Venetian architecture to explore. As Alys Colayera, lead travel expert for Greece at Black Tomato , shared, it’s a “great place to wander through the old alleyways, grab a strong cup of Greek coffee at a local coffee shop in the square, and take a boat to Bourtzi Castle if you are interested in architecture and history.” As for the name of the town, Visit Greece explained that it comes from its mythological founder, Nafplios, one of Poseidon's sons.

One more island city to explore is Chania on the island of Crete. It too is famed for its Venetian harbor and quaint old town. Explore its cobblestone streets, duck into museums like the Maritime Museum of Crete , and shop for souvenirs in its endless boutiques. Pro tip: Leather goods are famously great here, so go ahead and splurge on a bag or a pair of shoes.

While Larissa has a population of more than 130,000 people, it remains a place well in touch with Mother Nature. This city in central Greece is an agricultural hub, growing vegetables, grains, fruits, and more, so it's a great place to dig into some Thessalian cuisine. While in town, explore the Ancient Theatre of Larissa , dedicated to the god Dionysus, to learn more about the area's ancient history.

History abounds in the southern city of Corinth, thanks to well-preserved ruins including the iconic Temple of Apollo and the Acrocorinth fortress. Just an hour from Athens, Corinth and the surrounding coastal towns make a perfect day trip from the capital city, says Colayera.

If you’re making your way to the islands, odds are you’ll pass through the port city of Piraeus. Dozens of ferries come in and out of the harbor each day, but before you board one, spend a little time exploring the city by visiting places like The Hellenic Maritime Museum , which showcases Greece's rich seafaring heritage.

Head north along the Aegean coast to Kavala, a hillside city with gorgeous beaches, sweeping vistas, and an exciting mix of ancient history and modern city life. You can’t miss its imposing aqueduct, which runs for almost 1,000 feet and dates to the 16th century. Once you’re done viewing that, head straight to The Acropolis of Kavala to learn more about this city’s fascinating history.

Find the party in Patras, a university port city in western Greece. Yes, of course, you’ll find history here, including inside the Archaeological Museum of Patras , which showcases goods from the surrounding region dating back to prehistory. But in Patras, you’ll also find a bustling (and modern) nightlife scene across several neighborhoods, including down Riga Feraiou Pedestrian Street, where you can snag a delicious bite of Greek food, too.

Explore one of the most beautiful places in Greece when you plot a trip to Corfu Town on the eastern coast of the island of Corfu. Here, travelers can explore the historic architecture that earned Old Town of Corfu a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Tour the fortresses, stroll through the town’s central market, and visit Spianada Square, the largest square in Greece.
