  • Who are they best suited for?
  • About the differences between each model and Gen 6 vs. Gen 7.
  • Why I think you shouldn’t buy Trek Madone with SRAM groupset.

Plus, I’ll tell you which model gives you the best value for your money to help make your decision easier.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Trek Madone bikes are ideal for flats and rolling terrains. They are the most aero bike family of all Trek road bikes . The models differ in components (e.g., electronic shifting or wheels) and frames. The more expensive ones are usually lighter and have a higher-grade carbon frame, but usually diminishing returns.

This article compares Trek Madone Gen 6 and 7. The main difference between Madone Gen 6 and Gen 7 is that Gen 6 has IsoSpeed decoupler, while Gen 7 has IsoFlow.

The following table summarizes the main differences between all Madone bikes.

Madone Pros & Cons Summary

I summarized the pros & cons of the Madone series below.

Madone Pros

  • Faster than standard road bikes thanks to the aero frame
  • Madone Gen 7 stands out from the crowd thanks to the IsoFlow
  • Racing geometry
  • Availability in multiple sizes and colors
  • Integrated cable routing
  • Lifetime warranty

Madone Cons

  • Heavier than Émonda road bikes
  • More expensive than non-aero road bikes
  • No aluminum models are available
  • Narrow tire clearance (28mm)

Madone Main Features

Let me now explain the most important features of the Trek Madone aero bikes.

Frame and Geometry

The Madone bikes are part of Trek’s road bike lineup . They’re made of carbon. No aluminum version of the Madone is available.

Trek Madone aero road bike.

The names of the bikes have abbreviations that refer to the type of carbon used for the frame:

  • SL are bikes with 500 series OCLV*  carbon (mid-range).
  • SLR are bikes with 800 series OCLV carbon (high-end).

*OCLV carbon is Trek’s patented carbon fiber process ( learn more ).

SL (Gen 6) frames are heavier than SLR (Gen 7), mainly due to the IsoSpeed vs. IsoFlow ( learn more ).

The bikes are available in many sizes (47-62) and colors. They have a relatively relaxed geometry compared to the Cervelo S5 but are almost identical to the Cannondale SystemSix.

Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics evaluation is a challenging discipline because it requires a lot of resources. No extensive independent database is available that compares the speed of different aero wheels.

In Trek’s whitepaper , I learned that the Madone Gen 7 is 19W faster than Gen 6 at 45 km/h.

Trek Madone view from the front.

However, it’s hard to compare it with other bikes. But it’s rumored that Madone is among the fastest aero bikes.

For instance, in Cannondale’s whitepaper , there’s a comparison of Cannondale SystemSix (one of the fastest aero bikes) with Madone 9.9. Madone was only slightly worse.

Wheels and Tires

On some Madone models, the wheels may be different, but typically, they come with Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 wheels.

Surprisingly, the front and rear wheels have the same rim depth. Other aero bike manufacturers often use deeper wheels in the rear and shallower ones in the front.

The same goes for tires. Madones come with 25mm tires in both the front and rear, but it’s common for competitors’ bikes to have 25mm tires in the front and 28mm tires in the rear.

Remember, the wheels are tubeless-ready, but the tires are clinchers.

Unsurprisingly, the Madone bikes have a 2X drivetrain, as is customary for road bikes.

Trek fits them with Shimano and SRAM groupsets, and the number in the bike name indicates the groupset.

  • Models ending with 6 use Shimano Ultegra , 105 Di2 (R7100) or SRAM Rival AXS groupsets.
  • Models ending with 7 use Shimano Ultegra Di2 (R8100) or SRAM Force AXS groupsets.
  • Models ending with 9 use Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 (R9200) or SRAM Red AXS groupsets.

Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 detail on the Trek Madone Gen 7.

Interestingly, the Madones with SRAM are heavier than the Madones of the same series with the Shimano groupset. In addition, the Shimano bikes are also cheaper.

This is somewhat strange because Shimano retail prices are higher than SRAM. That’s why I recommend choosing Trek bikes with Shimano groupsets unless you prefer SRAM.

IsoSpeed vs. IsoFlow

Undoubtedly, IsoSpeed and IsoFlow have become unique features that make Madone stand out from the crowd.

The IsoSpeed decoupler aimed to improve riding comfort by absorbing road vibrations. Unfortunately, it added weight to the bike.

Trek IsoSpeed (Madone Gen 6) vs. IsoFlow (Madone Gen 7).

The 7th generation Madone took people’s breath away. IsoFlow is a significant design change from the traditional bike appearance, but it’s supposed to improve both riding comfort and aerodynamics.

On the other hand, some have expressed opinions that the change in shape from a classic triangle to a quadrilateral will inherently reduce the overall frame stiffness. Learn more in the following video.

New Trek Madone gets an Engineering Roasting

So, which Trek Madone bike is the best?

If you’re considering buying a Madone, I suggest going for a model with a Shimano groupset. They tend to be lighter and less expensive than the equivalent SRAM models.

Consider the Madone SL 6 or 7 (Gen 7) for the best value for money. You will get an adjustable cockpit (which you won’t get with SLR Gen 7), Gen 7 frame (IsoFlow), and Shimano 105 Di2 or Ultegra Di2.

The only sacrifices you make are the lower-grade carbon, higher weight, and slightly worse aerodynamics and aesthetics due to the semi-integrated cockpit.

Trek Madone FAQ

Trek Madone bikes are for pro cyclists, competitive roadies, and enthusiast cyclists who want a unique-looking but fast road bike. They are ideal for flats, rolling terrain, and fast-paced rides (races, criteriums, etc.).

The main differences between Madone Gen 6 and Gen 7 are that Gen 6 has IsoSpeed decoupler, while Gen 7 has IsoFlow. Gen 7 frames are lighter and 19W faster at 45km/h ( source ). They also look different due to the significant design change. Trek introduced SL 6 and SL 7 Gen 7 with an adjustable cockpit in August 2023. These bikes are more affordable than the SLX versions.

The main difference between Madone and Émonda is that Madone is a pure aero road bike, while Émonda is a lightweight road bike for climbing. For more detailed info, please check out my comparison of Madone vs. Émonda .

The main difference between Madone and Domane is that Madone is a pure aero road bike, while Domane is an endurance road bike with wider tire clearance, also suitable for off-road adventures. Learn more in my Madone vs. Domane comparison.

Trek’s Seventh Generation Madone Blends Radical Design and Performance

Trek's new Madone is made to go fast and win races.

Takeaway: A pure-bred road race bike designed to win at the WorldTour level. With its latest Madone, Trek ditches the IsoSpeed decoupler for the new lighter weight, more aerodynamic, and visually radical IsoFlow seatmast.

  • Drops weight and gains efficiency.
  • Proven geometry remains unchanged from the gen-6 model.
  • Flared bars for reduced drag.
  • Three SRAM and three Shimano build kit offerings.

Trek Madone SLR 9 eTap Gen 7

Madone SLR 9 eTap Gen 7

Trek’s Madone is an iconic bike. First launched in 2003, the Madone has evolved massively over the past two decades. The platform’s most significant technological leap came about in 2014 when Trek debuted the Emonda, its dedicated lightweight bike. The Emonda freed the Madone from having to strictly be a light bike, allowing aerodynamics to become its primary focus.

trek madone

To deal with the notoriously stiff and uncomfortable ride of early aero bikes, Trek’s engineers incorporated an IsoSpeed decoupler, similar to the one used on the brand’s Domane endurance bike. With IsoSpeed, the bike’s seat tube moved independently from the top tube and seat stays, allowing it to absorb road chatter and small bumps. The resulting sixth-generation Madone was incredibly fast against the wind while also receiving praise for its ride quality. But the downside was the added weight.

With the new seventh-generation Madone, Trek set an ambitious goal of reducing weight without sacrificing the comfort and aerodynamic properties of the old bike. The most obvious place to shed grams was the IsoSpeed system, now replaced by the visually striking IsoFlow.

trek madone

According to Trek, function drove IsoFlow’s development. Aided by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Trek sought to overhaul the entire aerodynamic package of the Madone. The result was a new generation of Trek’s Kammtail tube shapes, including a smoother head tube, a down tube better optimized for use with and without bottles, a taller bottom bracket area, and the radically designed seat tube.

The new Madone is bold and will not be mistaken for any other bike. But it definitely won’t please riders who prefer a more traditional aesthetic. Trek deserves props for pushing the design language of a bicycle forward. Though its looks won't please everyone, I’m happy to see something other than a cookie-cutter, dropped-stays, aero-ish, all-around-er that seems so popular amongst bike designers.

trek madone

The new seat mast set-up is well-designed, offering easy and consistent height adjustment. But the best detail was in the seat clamp, which allowed for fore and aft adjustment independent of saddle tilt. It’s a small detail that makes setting up the bike much easier, as it allows for minor saddle angle tweaks while leaving it clamped in place.

These changes account for roughly half of the aerodynamic improvements of the new bike. Trek claims that the new Madone saves riders 19 watts of pedaling energy at 28 mph, but just half of that savings (9.3 watts) is from improvements to the frame. The remaining watt savings come from changes to the rider position due to the new flared handlebar design. The Madone SLR handlebar measures a traditional width in the drops, but the bar's flare positions the hoods inward by 30mm. This narrower hood location puts the rider in a more aerodynamic position when riding, thus saving watts.

trek madone

Thankfully for riders that are particular about their contact points, Trek made the new bike compatible with standard 1-⅛” stems so riders can set up their cockpit however they like. However, changing to this would give up a large chunk of the Madone’s claimed aero benefits unless riders choose a narrower-than-normal bar width.

trek madone

More importantly for pro riders and weight weenies alike, the new frameset is now two-thirds of a pound lighter than its predecessor. Our 56cm test bike came in at 16.2 pounds which is pretty svelt for an aero bike with 51cm deep clincher wheels and disc brakes. A big part of the weight saving comes from the new IsoFlow design. The cantilevered design of the seat tube and IsoFlow allows for engineered flex in the new Madone. This design is how Trek maintains the Madone’s celebrated ride quality.

Trek stuck to its H1.5 geometry as used on the previous generation Madone. It conceived this as a meeting point between Trek’s old racing-focused H1 geometry and its more relaxed H2 angles. The wheelbase on our 56cm bike was only 983mm, nearly a centimeter shorter than the Specialized Tarmac SL7 and Giant’s TCR, and 13 mm shorter than Canyons Ultimate. Combined with a relatively steep 73.5-degree head tube angle and a 58mm trail figure, you get a bike that will dive into corners as hard as you’re willing to push it.

trek madone slr geometry

Pricing and Build Options

There is no getting around the fact that as the top-of-the-line road racing bike from Trek, the Madone is not cheap. The move to electronic-only groups on all builds of the Madone does the price no favors as well. While equivalent new models of the Madone only get $200 more expensive for 2023. The entry-level build for the 2023 Madone SLR 6 (with Shimano 105 Di2) comes in at $8,000. That is a $1,100 increase over the 2021 Madone SLR 6 equipped with mechanical-shifting Shimano Ultegra. Top-of-the-range Dura-Ace and Red eTap builds retail for $12,750 and $13,200, respectively.

Trek offers the new Madone in six builds, three with SRAM (Red, Force, and Rival eTap) and three with Shimano (Dura-Ace, Ultegra, and 105 Di2). All of the Madone builds ship with the new integrated cockpit; Dura-Ace and Red-equipped Madones ship with Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 wheels, while all other builds get the slightly heavier Aeolus Pro 51.

Ride Impressions

The new Madone has an exceptionally smooth ride, lacking the characteristically dead and harsh feel of past aero bikes. But the mellow ride is not without an edge. The Madone does an exceptional job of balancing all-day comfort with the agility and aggression needed to be a top-tier race bike. Under sharp accelerations, especially at speeds under 25 mph, the Madone felt impressively stiff. But accelerations from the high 20s into 30+mph territory felt a bit more muted, which is not inherently a bad trait. A twitchy bike is not helpful when you’re going that fast.

trek madone

Once the Madone is up to speed, it just wants to stay there. I was impressed with how quickly and easily the bike would get rolling up to 20-22 miles per hour. Combined with the gentle ride quality, it felt like the new Madone would constantly surprise me with how fast I was going. The sensation of speed on this bike is almost sneaky, you get used to what 25mph feels like on a road bike, but on the Madone, the same pace feels calmer and less frantic, at least in a straight line. Throw the Madone into a corner, and it instantly feels sharp and aggressive.

trek madone

As a racer, I very much enjoyed the Madone’s willingness to corner aggressively, but it did expose one of the bike's faults. The 25mm tires shipped on our test biker are simply too narrow. Trek claims that the Madone can fit tires up to 28mm, but this feels short-sighted. Wheel brands such as Reserve, Enve, and Zipp now design around a 28mm tire as the default width. There is plenty of space in the frame for wider tires, so Trek is likely very conservative in its stock tire choice and maximum tire width recommendation.

trek madone

Even riding the stock 25mm tires with pressures as low as 65 psi front and 75 psi rear, the narrow rubber still felt like it was missing grip, with the back end stepping out multiple times when exiting a corner. It was also discouraging that a road bike selling for over thirteen thousand dollars does not ship with tubeless compatible tires or the proper bits to easily set up the Bontrager Aeolus RSL 51 wheels as tubeless.

trek madone

Another thing missing from the bike was a computer mount. Usually, it is not something I would expect a brand to include, but the bars require a Trek-specific part. Given the complete bike’s price tag and Trek’s integrated cockpit, it should come with a computer mount. I sourced a Blendr mount from my local Trek store, but it was not without its issues (it rattled loose during a training crit and fell off). It is possible to entirely avoid this proprietary part by using a standard 1-⅛” stem and handlebar but making this swap would involve cutting hydraulic houses and would not be cheap.

trek madone

I was also pleased to see Trek continue using the T47 bottom bracket standard on this bike. A threaded bottom bracket shell is a win for mechanics everywhere. However, the latest Madone is now only compatible with electronic shifting. We can argue whether it's bike brands like Trek (releasing electronic-only high-end bikes) or component brands like SRAM and Shimano (no longer developing high-performance mechanical road groupsets) or if consumers are just voting with their dollars. But the result is that we are witnessing the death of mechanical shifting from high-end racing bikes. And that's a little bit sad.

trek madone

Ultimately this Madone, like the versions that have come before, was conceived and designed to meet the needs of World Tour professionals. Everything about the bike, from how it rides, to how much it costs, reflects that niche design requirement. Aside from a small pool of professional racers, very few people will likely make the most of this bike’s capabilities. It’s analogous to the way most drivers will not benefit from driving a Formula One car. It’s a pure-bred race bike designed to win at the highest level. If that’s what you’re looking to do—or you just want to own a bike with that ability—then the Madone should be on your shortlist.

Tech of the Month July: Shimano 105 12-speed Di2 and bikes of the Tour de France

We ask if 105 is still the groupset of the people and take a look at the bikes – released and unreleased – that look set to be ridden at the tour

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

TOTM July

Competition

Shimano 105 12-speed di2, trek madone, pinarello bolide f.

Stefan Abram

This month we've got two big hitters: the hotly anticipated Shimano 105 12-speed Di2 groupset and a run through of all of the new bikes – both those released and still yet to be officially announced – that look set to be ridden at the Tour de France.

Now, we did record this before the first stages of the Tour took place – so we have now seen some of these bikes in action. Others are only likely to be brought out once we get to the high mountains – we'll have to see.

But just before we get into all of that, we just wanted to let you know that we've partnered with Garmin to give away a brand new Garmin Edge 1040 head unit.

It might not have the fancy solar tech, but the rest of the specs are all the same – and with a claimed 35 hours of battery life (up to 70 hours in battery saver mode) it still boasts an impressive run time.

The key features include multi-band GPS for even more accurate location tracking, a whole new user interface that's more intuitive to use than before, and clever pacing software which can tell you how hard you need to push on the climbs and the flats to get round a course most efficiently (i.e. quickly).

To be in with a chance of winning, simply click this link or fill in the form below. We’ll get in contact with the lucky winner by the end of this month. If you don’t end up being the lucky one – don’t worry, we’ll be running it again next month.

Shimano launches its popular 105 groupset with Di2 electronic shifting

Having unveiled 12-speed Ultegra and Dura-Ace last year, an update to Shimano’s third tier 105 groupset was clearly on the cards – but that still left many questions as to what form the refresh would take.

Would a 12th sprocket be introduced and the mechanical shifting retained? Or would electronic shifting be trickled down whilst keeping the gearing the same?

Turns out it was both, with a jump to 12-speeds and Di2 derailleurs being bestowed upon105 simultaneously. What’s more, most of the other tweaks that we introduced for Ultegra and Dura-Ace have been assimilated too – the most significant being the 10% wider spacing between the brake pads and the rotors, the option for wireless shifters, and a change to the bleed port for easier maintenance.

12-speed 105 is about a grand cheaper than 12-speed Ultegra, although it is about a grand more than what 11-speed Shimano 105 would previously sell for. So this update does mark a bit of a step away from being ‘the people’s groupset’ – which the previous groupset was fondly known as.

For a deeper dig into all the stats, specs and our verdict on the new gruppo, you can check out our Shimano 105 12-speed Di2 launch story . Or you can find our collection of all the bikes already sporting the new groupset over here – the cheapest of which start at £2,299.99 / $2,561.27.

Trek Madone with IsoFlow 'hole'

It had been quite a while since the release of the last Trek Madone, so we were expecting an update – but what we weren't expecting was a frame design quite like this.

With that gaping whole in the middle of the seattube, the new Madone was easy to spot at this year's Critérium du Dauphiné, although it wasn't until June 30 that the official launch was scheduled.

The benefits of the seat tube gap are said to be two-fold. First, it's supposed to improve the aerodynamics, taking advantage of the venturi effect whereby air is taken in and accelerated out the back.

We've seen similar designs in aero helmets, such as Poc's Ventral SPIN  and you can see the effect in action when you cover a hose pipe with your thumb to make the flow spray further.

The second benefit is that it makes the bike simpler and lighter, whilst still delivering comparable comfort to the previous Madone with the IsoSpeed decoupler suspension system set to the stiffest setting. So potentially a slight sacrifice in comfort, but now a size 56cm Madone SLR 9 with SRAM Red eTap is said to weigh 7.36kg.

For more information about the bike, you can find our Trek Madone launch story over here.

Image shows Scott Foil

Although the new Foil's profile might not be quite as radical as that of the Trek Madone, Scott still has some bold claims to make about it's flagship aero bike's performance.

First is that the aerodynamics have been improved to the tune of saving 1 minute and 18 seconds over 40km at 40kph, compared to the previous Scott Foil – which was already a fast bike.

It's worth noting that these numbers refer to actual wind tunnel tests, rather than only using  CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software. Also that a complete rider/bike system was tested, rather than just the frame on its own – Scott found in its prototyping phase that although some designs might test fastest just in isolation, they actually aren't so quick with a rider onboard.

Second, is that the comfort has been increased by taking a massive chunky out of the beefy aero seat post – allowing for much more flex. So as to retain the aero profile, Scott has integrated a faring into the seat post – but this can be swapped out for a slick looking rear light, should you wish.

Finally, Scott has managed to shed some weight compared to the previous model, with a size 54cm frameset coming in at 915g (claimed). This brings the claimed weight of a fully built bike with a  SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset  and  Zipp 454 NSW wheels to 7.22kg.

More information on the bike can be found in our Scott Foil launch story here, while our first ride review can be found here.

Pinarello Bolide F

The new Pinarello Bolide F was first spotted in the Tour de Suisse, with Geraint Thomas putting in an impressive performance on the bike. For that first sighting, Pinarello had used a camo wrap to try and disguise the frame.

That said, with 'Bolide' written hundred of times over, it made for such a distinctive look that it was very hard to miss. The wrap also didn't disguise the absence of the controversial rim brake farings that were such an iconic feature of the model.

Surprisingly, Pinarello has tested the new Bolide as having slightly more aerodynamic drag than the previous model – though still being within 0.04% (0.0075N), so only just.

However, Pinarello still claims that this new model is a faster total package, with increased stiffness, better handling and a lighter weight. The new Bolide F can also take up to 28mm - which is very plump for a TT bike.

For more information, you can find our launch story on the Pinarello Bolide F just over here.

20 bikes with Shimano's new 105 Di2 electronic groupset

Bikes already adorned with the latest Shimano groupset

Leading bike brands have been quicker than an electronic gear shift to get the new Shimano 105 R7150 Di2 groupset onto their freshest releases.

The electrification of Shimano's third-tier 105 mechanical groupset has been long in the offing, leaving the brand trailing its rivals.

SRAM's electronic equivalent of 105, Rival eTap AXS , was released in 2021. Our technical writer Oscar Huckle has compiled a buyer's guide comparing Shimano 105 R7150 Di2 to SRAM Rival eTap AXS .

Prior to the launch, we'd been calling for Shimano to follow suit – a wireless, 12-speed 105 groupset topped our 2022 Shimano wish list . Whether an updated mechanical version of 105 will follow remains to be seen.

So far, Shimano 105 Di2 has appeared on a variety of bikes, from some brands' most prestigious models to middle-market options elsewhere.

While you can order many of these bikes now, some brands have told us their bikes with the new groupset won't be available until 2023.

By contrast, others said they have no plans to spec a bike with Shimano 105 Di2. In the meantime, here are the bikes bedecked with Shimano's cheapest electronic groupset . We will update this article with further bikes as details arrive.

Ribble Ultra SLR 105 Di2

Ribble Ultra SLR 105 Di2

The drag-reducing characteristics remain by way of the carbon fibre monocoque frame, carbon forks and integrated carbon aero bar and stem.

The aero seatpost holds a Selle Italia Model X Superflow saddle.

The carbon wheelset is the brand's own Level DB56 Sport shod with 700 x 28c Continental GP5000 tyres.

Bikes with Shimano 105 Di2: who has them and what’s their availability?

As with Shimano’s other 12-speed groupsets, actually getting your hands on a bike with 105 Di2 is the tricky bit

The new Shimano 105 groupset on a black background

With Shimano 105 going 12-speed electronic in its latest R7100 guise, Shimano now rivals SRAM in the depth of its 12-speed electronic groupset line-up.

But when even Geraint Thomas was running 11-speed Dura-Ace Di2 at the grand départ of the Tour de France in Copenhagen this year, you know that actually getting a bike with a 12-speed Shimano groupset attached is not that simple.

The availability of Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2 groupsets is still poor, almost a year after their launch. It looks as if the big brands aren’t committing to 105 Di2 until they’re sure they can get enough groupsets to equip thousands of bikes.

That means that you’re more likely to find 105 Di2 with smaller builders, who don’t need the volume of groupsets of the large brands. Smaller direct sales brands can also pivot their production a lot more easily if availability does increase, and building to order means that they don't need a huge stock of 105 Di2 groupsets to start shipping bikes.

What does Shimano 105 Di2 offer?

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

Shimano 105 Di2 R7100 shares many of the features of Shimano’s higher-end 12-speed groupsets, including semi-wireless shifting, with a central battery to power the derailleurs and a wireless connection from the shift levers.

It comes in hydraulic disc brake guise, and with 50-34t or 52-36t chainsets only. But all the options we've found have a 50/34t, suggesting that semi-compact chainrings may still not be available. You can pair the chainset with either an 11-34t in-series cassette or a non-series 11-36t which gives you more range than either Dura-Ace or Ultegra 12-speed.

Here’s a run-down of Shimano 105 Di2 equipped bikes and the availability date stated by brands on their sites - if there is one.

Bikes with Shimano 105 Di2 and their availability

Ribble CGR Ti 105 Di2

Ribble CGR Ti

Our expert review:

Specifications

Ribble is a UK direct sales brand, but will also ship to the US and other countries. It has a dedicated site for Germany . There's a range of Ribble bikes available with Shimano 105 Di2, including the titanium CGR Ti, Endurance SL Disc, Endurance SL e electric road bike and aero Ultra SL R.

The CGR Ti is an all-road bike with the clearance for wider tyres, with the standard spec including Mavic Allroad wheels with Schwalbe G-One Allround 40mm tyres. The finishing kit on the standard build comes from Ribble's in-house brand 'Level'.

Although all sizes show immediate availability, the actual delivery date for the CGR Ti and Ribble's other bikes is shown as October 2022. Since Ribble builds to order, you can select your own spec for many of the components, including wheels and saddle.

Bianchi Aria 105 Di2

Bianchi Aria

The Aria is Bianchi's mid-level aero race bike and it's offered with 105 Di2 alongside Ultegra Di2, SRAM Rival eTap AXS and mechanical Shimano 11-speed mechancal builds. Unlike Bianchi's flashier aero bikes, there's no cable integration so the brake hoses run externally at the cockpit.

If you don't like celeste, there are blue/grey and black paint colour options available as well. Bianchi isn't expecting availability until early 2023.

Wilier Zero SL 105 Di2

Wilier Zero SL

The Wilier Zero SLR is the brand's pro-level lightweight aero bike with a price tag to match. The Italian brand now sells the Zero SL with the same frame geometry and features but using a lower spec carbon for a more affordable bike and it includes a 105 Di2 option.

Wilier quotes a frame weight of 930g and a fork weight of 370g for the Zero SL, so it's still no heavyweight. You get in-spec carbon wheels and internal cabling along with clearance for tyres up to 28mm.

There's nothing about availability or timescales on Wilier's site.

Orro Venturi 105 Di2

Orro Venturi STC

UK brand Orro has a range of its bikes with 105 Di2, including this Venturi aero bike and the Orro Gold STC endurance bike. Both are available immediately in a few sizes with limited stock from Chain Reaction Cycles and Wiggle in the US and the UK.

Both bikes come with a compact chainset and the in-series 11-34t cassette and both are fitted with Fulcrum wheels with 28mm Continental Grand Sport Race tyres. The Venturi gets an FSA integrated cockpit, while the Gold STC's bars and stem come from Deda and have exposed brake hoses - no need for shifter wires with 105 Di2 of course.

Dolan Ares bike with Shimano 105 Di2

Dolan Ares Disc

Dolan bikes offers a lot of configuration options - everything from wheels and cockpit down to bar tape colour.

The Ares is Dolan's aero bike and you can choose between a fully integrated Deda cockpit or external cabling. The stock build includes wire bead 25mm Continental Ultra Sport tyres. They're probably a good place to start on upgrades, with Dolan offering tyre options up to 32mm Conti GP 5000.

Dolan builds its bikes in the UK but ships to most other countries, including the US. There's a range of other Dolan bikes available with 105 Di2 too, including Dolan's endurance and gravel bikes.

Although you can order now, Dolan doesn't state a delivery date on its site.

Mason Aspect Ultegra Di2

Mason Aspect

Niche Sussex-based builder Mason Cycles will offer its alloy Definition and steel Resolution bikes with 105 Di2, as well as the built-to-order titanium Aspect. Mason will build the bikes up to your specifications and can fit a wide range of Hunt wheels and Schwalbe 28mm or 30mm tyre options.

Mason expects to have availability of Shimano 105 Di2 groupsets from the first quarter of next year, but you can pre-order straight away.

Orro Terra Trail 105 Di2

Orro Terra C 105 Di2

If you're looking more for a gravel bike rather than a road bike, the carbon frame Terra C from Orro mixes a 105 Di2 50-34t chainset with an 11-34t cassette for enough range for all but the steepest gravel ascents.

It's kitted out with Fulcrum Rapid Red 900 DB wheels with Continental Terra Trail 40mm gravel tyres and a Deda cockpit.

Availability is low, but Chain Reaction Cycles and Wiggle have a couple of bikes showing as available to buy now in sizes S and XL.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Dvorets Sovetov station, 1935. Letters on the entrance: "Metro after Kaganovich."

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M.
