Day 4: Cameron Highlands

This region is known for its unique mixture of colonial British and authentic Malay culture. Home to tea plantations, strawberry farms and hiking trails in the jungle, there is so much to experience in this part of the country. 

Due to the travel time from Malacca, you will arrive in the Cameron Highlands in the early afternoon, so one of the best things to do is to head to the Boh Tea Plantation.

The Boh Tea Company was founded in 1929 and is one of the most famous brands of tea in Malaysia. A visit to the Boh Tea Plantation will allow you to enjoy the lush green terraces and learn how the tea is harvested and grown. With sweeping views of the region, enjoy a cup of tea while admiring your surroundings.

Day 5: Cameron Highlands 

Since there is so much to see and do in the Cameron Highlands, you’ll need another day exploring the region. 

On your second day in the Cameron Highlands, you’ll experience the best of the outdoors. 

Get up early to climb Mount Brinchang. As one of the main peaks in the Cameron Highlands, a visit to the top of Mount Brinchang is a must. 

The main way to get to the top is to take a drive (hire a car or taxi) along a winding mountain road. Standing at 2,031 metres above sea level, you’ll be blown away by the sweeping views once you reach the top.

After your morning mountain adventure, spend the afternoon trekking through the jungle. 

With jungle tracks scattered throughout the region, you can find yourself on the top of forested hills, at the bottom of a sweeping valley or standing beneath a waterfall; a trek through the jungle is a must while in the Cameron Highlands.

Day 6: Penang

On day six of your 10-day Malaysia itinerary, travel from the Cameron Highlands to the island of Penang. 

There is a bus that can take you to the island, which takes around three hours. 

Penang is one of Malaysia’s most diverse and interesting destinations, which is why you’ll spend two days exploring it!

The diverse nature of Penang is represented by the UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the old streets of Georgetown.

Spend your first day on the island exploring the old lanes, marvelling at the many murals and indulging in delicious Malaysian street food.

• Kheng Pin Cafe: This cafe is known for having some of the best lor bak (deep-fried meat, seafood and vegetables) in Penang, so it’s definitely worth visiting. 
• Sister Yao’s: This humble stall on Macalister Lane has been serving some of the best char koay kak (radish cake) for over 40 years. 
• Medan Selera Padang Brown: Lok Lok is a type of communal hot pot dish, and Medan Selera Padang Brown serves up some of the best in Penang.

Day 7: Penang 

Wake up early on your second day in Penang because it will be an eventful day exploring nature and cultural attractions. 

Wake up early to walk to the top of the 833-metre Penang Hill for stunning views over the island. If you don’t feel like walking, you can take the funicular to the summit instead. 

After soaking up the views from the top of the hill, make your way to Kek Lok Si, one of the largest Buddhist Temples in Malaysia. The temple is an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries. 

After exploring the temple, head back to Georgetown to take the three-hour ferry to the nearby island of Langkawi. 

• New Lane Hawker Centre: Oh Chien is a fried oyster-filled omelette, and you can try one of the best at New Lane Hawker Centre. 
• Kafe Ping Hooi: Char koay teow is considered the most iconic street food in Penang, and you can try it at Kafe Ping Hooi. 
• Air Itam: Much like char koay teow, asam laksa is also one of the best dishes to eat in Penang. Try it at Air Itam!

Day 8: Langkawi 

After catching the three-hour ferry to Langkawi from Penang on the afternoon of day seven, spend the next two days relaxing.

Langkawi may be Malaysia’s most popular holiday destination, but you’ll be surprised at how relaxed, quiet and underdeveloped it is. 

After a jam-packed first seven days in Malaysia, spend your first day in Langkawi relaxing on the white sands of Cenang Beach. 

Swim in the ocean, soak up the sun on the sand and enjoy a few drinks at the rustic beachside bars while watching the sunset. 

• The Gulai House: If you’re up for a fine dining experience that serves Malaysian and Indian dishes, head to The Gulai House in the rainforest. 
• Yellow Beach Cafe: One of the best places to enjoy delicious food while watching the sunset on the beach is the Yellow Beach Cafe. 
• Langkawi Fish Farm Restaurant: Considered one of the best seafood restaurants in Langkawi, situated over the water, the Langkawi Fish Farm Restaurant is a must-visit.

Day 9: Langkawi

Want to do something different? Hop on an island-hopping tour around Langkawi, where you can explore the area’s many tropical inlets and secret beaches. 

After you’ve spent your morning exploring the beautiful beaches and inlets around the island, head to Langkawi Sky Bridge. Here a cable car takes you to the top of one of the island’s tallest peaks, where a long bridge spans between mountains. Once you’re on the bridge, you’ll be welcomed with stunning views of the island, and on a clear day, you’ll be able to see the nearby Thai islands too. 

Spend your evening back on Cenang Beach, watching the sunset with a refreshing drink in hand.

• The Cliff Restaurant and Bar: Located on a cliff overlooking Cenang Beach, this restaurant is popular for its spectacular sunset views. 
• Kayu Puti: Located in the St. Regis hotel, this fine dining restaurant boasts delectable food from world-famous chef Gaetan Biesuz. 
• Orkid Ria Restaurant: Known for its seafood, this restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest seafood on the island. 

Day 10: Kuala Lumpur

On your final day in Malaysia, you can catch the one-hour flight back to Kuala Lumpur.

If you wish to make the most of your time left in Langkawi, you can catch an afternoon flight to Kuala Lumpur before your evening flight out of the country. 

Or, if you wish to explore Kuala Lumpur some more, you can head back to the city in the morning to spend the day wandering around.

Frequently eaten for breakfast or on the go, nasi lemak could be called Malaysia’s national dish. The rice in nasi lemak gets steamed in coconut milk to lend it savory sweetness. Where to Stay

Kuala Lumpur has an abundance of affordable hotel choices, but you’ll first have to determine which part of the city you prefer to stay. If eating and shopping at big malls are important to you, consider one of the glitzy hotels nearer to Bukit Bintang. If you prefer smaller hotels in a neighborhood with a little more grungy charm, consider staying nearer to Chinatown. You’ll spend too much time waiting for drivers if based in a residential neighborhood too far from the action.

Getting There

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is located around 28 miles south of the city. Malaysia is well connected with Asia and Europe via KLIA, especially after the KLIA2 terminal opened as an expansion in 2014. Unfortunately, there aren’t yet direct flights from the United States to Kuala Lumpur. American travelers will need to connect elsewhere in Asia.

Culture and Customs

To be polite, avoid using your left hand when interacting with others. Stick to using only your right hand as much as possible when eating in public. Money Saving Tips

• Tipping in Malaysia isn’t customary ; however, gratuity is becoming more expected in high-end hotels that attract Western tourists. Large restaurants may add a service charge (usually 10 percent) to the total bill. Unlike in China and Japan, showing your appreciation with a small tip won’t cause a scene. You can choose to tip porters and bellboys a ringgit or two; round up fares for drivers.
• Take advantage of Kuala Lumpur’s inexpensive train system , particularly the LRT and monorail, for moving between sights. Save going by Grab as a last resort for when no train stations are nearby.
• If you’re forced to use a taxi in Malaysia, negotiate the fare first. If the taxi has a meter, pay extra attention to the route taken by the driver.

Day 1 – 2: Kuala Lumpur

Where to Stay in Malacca

It’s best to situate yourself centrally so as to be within walking distance from all the attractions. There is a nice atmosphere by the river, and plenty of hostels and guesthouses are situated here.

Day 5 – 6: Cameron Highlands

Make your way up into the highlands of Malaysia. The cooler, wetter climate, and fertile ground make this an area ideal for tea plantations. The Cameron Highlands is, therefore, famous for its never-ending tea plantations and stunning hiking trails.

The Genting Highlands

The Genting Highlands is popular on the weekends with Malaysians for the gigantic malls, casinos, and hotels. Avoid these parts and, instead, take the cable car up the mountain to the Chin Swee Temple. This colorful tiered pagoda stands tall at the summit, providing beautiful views of the thick, green forest beneath the Titiwangsa Mountains.

How to get to Chin Swee Cave Temple 

The gondola leaves from the Awana car park , every day from 7 AM until midnight. Thrillseekers can choose to travel in the glass-bottomed gondola for the price of RM 50 per person. The normal gondola costs a much cheaper RM8 per person.

Where to Stay in the Cameron Highlands

The 3 main towns that make up the Cameron Highlands are Tanah Rata, Brinchang, and Ringlet. A variety of low-range- mid-range accommodation is available in each of the three.

Choose your location based on the sights you would most like to see. For example, Ringlet is closest to the BOH tea plantation, whereas most of the waterfalls are situated closer to Tanah Rata.

Day 7: Ipoh – An undiscovered Malaysia travel spot

Go off the beaten path and visit Georgetown’s little brother, Ipoh. Wander down the colonial streets of Ipoh old town, where art and street food dominate the scene. Follow this with a visit to one of the temples carved into the limestone.

Cameron Highlands to Ipoh From Cameron Highlands to Ipoh takes 2 hours. Take the bus or car to Ipoh in the afternoon of day 6 so you have the 7th day to explore the highlights of Ipoh.

Day 8 – 10: Georgetown, Penang

Georgetown is a beautiful city located on Penang , an island just off the coast of Malaysia. World-famous for its street art trail, it has rightly become one of the must-visit places in Malaysia.

Take to the streets for incredible murals, beautiful temples, and a mouth-watering street food scene! And when you’re done with the city, visit some of the small white-sand beaches or the national park.

Ipoh to Georgetown To get from Ipoh to Georgetown, you can take a direct bus to the center of town. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so there is no need to catch a boat.

Georgetown to Langkawi Before, there used to be a super-fast ferry between Penang Island and Langkawi. However, nowadays, the only way to get there is to hop on a quick plane ride to the archipelago.

For Anthony Bourdain, it’s laksa. For me, it’s Cendol. Nothing says Malaysia like a freakish bowl of sweet coconut milk topped with green jelly and kidney beans. Give me a slice of thick-cut toast with Kaya butter, a tall glass of Ipoh white coffee, and a simple bowl of Char Kuey Teow fried noodles, all in quick succession. I’m no foodie, but Malaysia sure brings it out in me.

From the skyscrapers of Southeast Asia’s most iconic metropolis, Kuala Lumpur , to the 130-million-year-old rainforests in Taman Negara , Malaysia truly is a place where old and new, tradition and modernity, the crumbling and the glossy, meet in the middle. Many adventures begin at Kuala Lumpur international airport . Before you make a break for it, take a few days to soak up the place where it all comes to a head.

Take a quick trip to the Batu Caves and a drawn-out hike to Mount Kinabalu . Kick back on the Perhentian Islands , sip tea in the Cameron Highlands , and saunter down the river in Kota Kinabalu in search of wild orangutans. From Peninsular Malaysia to the island of Borneo, this is undoubtedly one of Southeast Asia’s most varied and underrated countries.

Malaysia is the original melting pot, a heady blend of Malay, Indian, Chinese, Hokkien and indigenous cultures. If you’re a handicraft lover like me, best leave some serious space in your suitcase for souvenir shopping . Iban baskets from Kuching and ikat and batik textiles are my picks.

Walk the streets of Ipoh , my favourite city in Malaysia, with its heritage architecture and hawker markets, and roam the five-foot ways for legendary street art in Penang . Maybe it’s the Milo or milky tea served with a cracker on the side, but Malaysia always makes me pine for a childhood I never had. Anywhere you land, the nostalgia is almost as thick as the cloying humidity.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 30s most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 20s at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practised, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank (business people, government officials etc.) are respected greatly. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterised by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population) but is widely available for purchase and consumption.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 23°C to 32°C along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 14°C to 25°C in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see sub-zero temperatures at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

Is Malaysia Safe To Travel Alone?

Yes, Malaysia is a very safe country to travel alone. If you are concerned about female solo travel safety, you’ll be happy to know that the country has a low violent crime rate. 

Additionally, according to the most recent Global Peace Index report from Vision of Humanity , Malaysia has a high state of peace and ranks #18 in the entire list of 163 countries.

Where Is Malaysia?

If you are unsure where Malaysia is on the map, the easiest way to find it is to look for Thailand and Singapore, and then identify the land in between them.  

The real answer is: Malaysia is located in the South East part of Asia , consisting of two regions. 

One region is called West Malaysia and it is located on the Malay Peninsula, below Thailand. A few popular tourist destinations in West Malaysia include Kuala Lumpur, Penang Island, and the Cameron Highlands.

The other, separated by the South China Sea, occupies a part of the Borneo island bordering Brunei and Indonesia and is known as East Malaysia. It’s sometimes referred to as “the Borneo States” or “Malaysian Borneo” and includes the State of Sabah, the State of Sarawak, and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

Getting To Malaysia

There are a few transportation options for a solo traveler in Malaysia:

Flying to Malaysia: 

Traveling by plane is the fastest and most popular way to reach Malaysia. 

There are six international airports in total, with two international airports within Kuala Lumpur:

• Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA1) and KLIA2
• KLIA1 is the main international airport for travelers

Arriving to Malaysia by train: 

There are two locations to enter Malaysia by train, either from Bangkok or Singapore. Both stop at Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral), the nation’s largest transit hub.

To travel from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur (22 hours):

There are two trains you will need to take. 

The first train is a sleeper train that will take 17 hours from Bangkok to Padang Besar. 

The second train will take 5 hours from Padang Besar to Kuala Lumpur. 

It is a pretty comfortable ride as you pass the lush greenery.

To travel from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur (7 hours) :

There are three trains you will need to take to reach Kuala Lumpur. 

You will first take a train from the Singapore Woodlands Train Checkpoint to head to Johor Bahru Sentral (JB Sentral) for a 5-min train ride.

Next, you will take the train from JB Sentral to Gemas in Negeri Sembilan for a 4-hour ride. 

Finally, purchase a train ticket from Gemas station to KL Sentral for another 3-hour journey.

Arriving to Malaysia by bus:

This is the cheapest option if you are planning to do Malaysia solo female travel on a budget ! 

I recommend taking the bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur as the duration is much shorter (6 hours), with over 100 bus routes from Singapore during peak days such as Friday and Saturday.

Getting Around Malaysia As A Solo Traveler 

You can get around in Malaysia either via train, bus, and plane — or by e-hailing a car from the Grab app .

The Klang Valley area (Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Putrajaya) has the most integrated railway system, with MRTs, LRTs, and monorails to get around the city. 

In addition, Malaysia has two main railway lines that stretch from north to south (Padang Besar, Perlis to Singapore) and east to west (Gemas, Negeri Sembilan to Tumpat, Kelantan).

Taking the bus is your cheapest transport option, although the frequent traffic congestion within populated cities may cause delays and disrupt your travel plans.

 It is much wiser to take the bus for long-distance travel out of state.

There used to be a Rapid Penang Tourist Passport that allowed unlimited traveling for one week at an affordable price of RM 20 ($4), but it was sadly terminated.

The easiest way to navigate around Malaysia is by car.

I don’t recommend driving yourself as local drivers can be ruthless on the road — especially in Penang!

It is better to hail a ride from the Grab app for your safety and sanity.

Now let’s discuss where to actually go during solo travel in Malaysia. While there are many options for great destinations, a few of my top picks include:

Kuala Lumpur

You can’t visit Malaysia without visiting Kuala Lumpur, aka KL City!

This bustling capital city offers solo travelers plenty of unique food, local culture, tourist attractions appealing to locals and foreigners alike, and a vibrant nightlife like no other. There are also many different tours and experiences in KL that will easily become the highlight of your Malaysia itinerary.

Kuala Lumpur is the most developed city in the country and has an efficient public transportation system for easily getting around. As such, it is one of the best places to travel alone in Malaysia.

It is no surprise that Kuala Lumpur was just awarded Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel . With that, here are some fun things to do for solo travel in Kuala Lumpur: 

The Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest twin towers in the world and are iconic landmarks that stand out in the KL skyline. Certain levels — including its double-decker Skybridge — within its 88 floors are open to the public with an entrance fee. 

That being said, Petronas Twin Towers isn’t the only iconic tower in KL you can check out. 

The Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower) is only 1.4 miles away from the twin towers and also has an observatory deck where you can get a 360-degree glimpse of city. It looks particularly majestic at sunset. 

If the height does not make you dizzy, try dining in its revolving restaurant — located 925 feet above ground level. This experience includes spectacular views, live entertainment, and a delicious Malaysian food buffet.

And if you would like to dive into numerous local delicacies in one location, then Jalan Alor — one of the most famous food streets in Kuala Lumpur — is the place to be. Give the fried durian a try! You can also choose to book a guided street food tour to have a local show you the best things to sample.

If you want to explore most of the city quickly, hop off at every train stop from Bank Rakyat Bangsar to KLCC on the Kelana Jaya LRT line . You may stumble upon some fancy speakeasy bars or local delicacies for less than $2!

Step out of Kuala Lumpur and you will arrive in Selangor. That’s because Selangor is the surrounding state outside of the capital city.

Selangor is the country’s most developed state, with a solid infrastructure and a decent public transportation system. Because of this, you can solo travel in Selangor with ease.

In terms of tourist attractions, the beaches in Selangor are a highlight as are the many local nature experiences. These stretches of sand are perfect for a fun beach trip alone .

For example, Kuala Selangor is known for its firefly sightings , as it’s home to one of the biggest firefly colonies in the world. Seeing the fireflies lighting up the sky after dark feels magical, and the best way to view them is on a guided boat ride as the fireflies dance in the sky and through the mangroves.

Another highlight of traveling or backpacking Malaysia is experiencing the “ Sky Mirror ” at Kuala Selangor Beach . The Sky Mirror appears at low tide when a sand bar — which is touted as Malaysia’s own “Salar de Uyuni” — appears, and you get a reflective mirror effect on the ground.

If you’re looking to take some interesting travel photos , you won’t want to miss it.

Do note that the Sky Mirror does not occur every day, as weather conditions need to be just right where the tide is low enough to reflect the sky. It is best to visit either on the day of the full moon or the new moon. 

Another sight worth adding to your Malaysia itinerary is Batu Caves just minutes away from Kuala Lumpur. Batu Caves is a limestone mogote that hosts several Hindu temples and the famous Lord Murugan golden statue. 

There are also rock climbing activities around this large hill that you can participate in, with routes suitable for beginners and advanced climbers.

If you do not have gear with you, it’s recommended to visit Gua Damai Xtreme Park , which offers gear rentals and showcases 100 routes to try out in the Batu Caves area.

Genting Highlands

Many tourists believe that Malaysia is all about hot summer weather; but, in Genting Highlands, you can get sweater weather as cold as 12 °C (54 °F)!

Sitting on the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali at 1,800 meters (5,906 feet), this hill resort in Pahang is one of the best solo travel destinations in Malaysia. It features exciting indoor and outdoor theme parks and retail shopping malls — and is home to the country’s only two casinos.

There are bus tickets to Genting Highlands, however, I recommend going by car as the roads are winding and steep.

If you would like a quicker way up the hill, you can ride the Awana SkyWay Gondola Cable Car up to Genting Resort. These cable cars are efficient, fun, and allow you to see near Kuala Lumpur from a panoramic angle.

Cameron Highlands

Further up north from Genting Highlands is Cameron Highlands, the land of tea plantations. In fact, it is where Malaysia’s most popular tea brand, BOH Tea, originated from. 

The weather is quite chilly up here as temperatures can drop as low as 12 °C (54 °F) — which is one of the reasons why it is a popular place for Malaysia solo travel.

There are buses to Cameron Highlands; however, similar to Genting Highlands, these narrow roads are winding and steep, especially in poorer weather conditions. Because of this, it’s wise to opt for a private transfer instead.

Where most locals will flock to Genting Highlands for entertainment, those who prefer a quiet and serene atmosphere will head to Cameron Highlands. 

You can visit bee and strawberry farms here as well as hike beautiful trails while enjoying a cool breeze. During your hikes, try to spot the world’s largest (and smelliest) flower, the Rafflesia.

Penang Island

Solo travel in Penang should definitely be on your itinerary. Luckily, this island state is only a 5-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Many tourists choose to fly as the plane tickets are quite affordable — typically between $30-$80 for a return trip. Plus, flying saves time as it’s a quick 60-minute flight each way.

It’s important to understand that Penang is split into two locations: one is located on Peninsular Malaysia (or the Malaysian Peninsula) while the other is known as Penang Island and is where George Town is located. 

George Town is also one of two colonial cities (along with Melaka) on the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia classified as a UNESCO World Heritage City . This is thanks to a still-visible multi-cultural heritage dating back to when these cities functioned as trading ports linking East and West.

George Town has also grown in popularity as a photo spot with unique street art and murals showcased in the hidden alleys.

Penang Island is one of the safest destinations in Malaysia, with extremely low crime rates in comparison to Kuala Lumpur. The best way to get around the island is either by foot, bicycle, or via e-hailing rides. You can find many bike rental locations in George Town to rent from about RM 20 ($4) a day.

The Ethnic Chinese makes up the majority of the population in Penang. As such, English and Hokkien are the two most widely spoken languages here, so it is easy to converse with locals or ask for directions if you’re lost.

While you visit Penang, be sure to check out the largest Chinese temple in Malaysia, Kek Lok Si Temple . Located on a hill, this temple went through a major fire recently but continues to maintain a majestic outlook with its beautiful pagoda overlooking the city. 

To enter the pagoda, you will need to pay a small fee of RM 2 ($0.45). You can take their mini cable car that goes to the highest parts of the temple for RM 16 ($3).

Another unforgettable experience:

Reconnect with nature through the multiple forest trails of Penang National Park . Featuring 2,997 acres (1,213 hectares), there are a number of intermediate hiking trails that you can take to visit the beautiful Monkey Beach — which yes, has monkeys!

To enter Penang National Park, you’ll need to pay a conservation fee of RM 50 ($11) for foreigners and RM 10 ($2) for locals. You can also take a boat ride back to the entrance for RM 100 ($22) to get a glimpse of the different Penang bays.

Kinabalu Park

If West Malaysia has cultural cities as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, East Malaysia has national parks.

Kinabalu Park near Kota Kinabalu is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site and is where Mount Kinabalu , the highest mountain in Malaysia, resides. 

The only way to get to Kota Kinabalu from Kuala Lumpur is by flight. From Kota Kinabalu, you can take either a taxi, bus, or rental car to enter Kinabalu Park. 

Mount Kinabalu is on many locals’ bucket lists as hiking to the top of the mountain is a huge achievement. I know friends who trained daily to be able to do the arduous hike to the peak, which takes two days and one night.

Even if you are not planning to hike, you can still visit Kinabalu Park and take a trail walk around the Botanical Gardens for a relaxing Malaysia solo travel experience.

There are other places to visit, too, such as the Upside Down House and Desa Dairy Farm at Kundasang Valley. Here you can bottle-feed baby calves and taste fresh milk from the farm.

To wrap up your stay here, take a soothing warm soak at Poring Hot Springs . These sulfur baths will help you sleep well on your flight back!

The entrance fee to Kinabalu Park, including their local guide, is RM 23 ($5). There is also a conservation and entrance fee if you are visiting certain attractions, such as the Canopy Bridge and Butterfly Farm within Kinabalu Park.

Mulu National Park

Become one with nature at Mulu National Park, a highlight of any Malaysia itinerary. Located in Sarawak, you can experience tranquility within the Borneo rainforest and the largest cave passages in the world. This protected forest reserve is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The only way to enter Mulu National Park is by plane on a 64-seater aircraft, with direct flights from Miri, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu. Don’t worry, it’s completely safe — although it may feel like a mini roller-coaster in the air due to the area’s unpredictable weather! 

Be prepared to have intermittent access to your emails as there is limited connectivity here. 

You will also be jungle trekking constantly so make sure to bring your best walking shoes and proper hiking attire .

You can visit show caves — such as the Deer Cave , the world’s largest cave passage, via a 1.8-mile plank walk. Additionally, it’s interesting to explore Clearwater Cave , the 8th longest cave in the world, via a 200-step climb, and Wind Cave via a river boat. 

Trekking the caves is intriguing as you must trust your senses while navigating with a head lamp. Some parts of the caves may require you to swim to the next section, too; but even if you are not a swimmer, guides will be there to assist you to shore.

Deer Cave also has a Bat Observatory section. It’s one of the top places to visit at sunset, when you can witness an exodus of millions of bats leaving the cave to hunt for their next meal.

If you have time to spare, hike up a steep 1.5-mile trail to the iconic peaks of Gunung Api (Mount Api) for a jaw-dropping view of the Pinnacles , a striking karst formation.

Note that to visit Mulu National Park you will need to purchase a 5-day pass for RM 30 ($7) even if you stay for a shorter duration.

Bako National Park

If you enjoy hiking and want to explore more of the Borneo rainforest’s fauna and flora, then Bako National Park is worth the visit. It is only accessible via boat.

Situated 23 miles (37 kilometers) from Kuching, Bako National Park is possibly the best place to travel alone in Malaysia if you love wildlife. In fact, the park is home to a variety of wildlife including proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, bearded pigs, and silver-leaf monkeys. 

You can spot the proboscis monkey by its large nose and reddish-brown fur near the park’s headquarters and around Telok Paku (Paku Bay) , Telok Delima (Delima Bay) , and Telok Assam (Assam Bay) . These spots are accessible by foot through their many jungle trails. 

The Lintang Loop Trail is for hikers who do not mind a 3.26-mile path that typically takes about 4 hours. You will also pass the famous Sea Stacks rock formation — which resembles a hooded cobra coming up from the water — when you are returning by boat or on a tour of the national park .

If you are staying in Kuching City, you can also take a private tour with a hotel pick-up to Bako National Park where you can go on an 8-hour long tour that includes cruising along the South China Sea.

Tips For A Fun & Safe Solo Trip To Malaysia

Solo traveling in Malaysia can be a fun and safe experience for female travelers; however, it is good to remember a few important tips when visiting any foreign country: 

Be cautious of pickpockets. While pickpocketing and bag-snatching are not as common as they were back in the day, it is still smart to keep your valuables locked in your hotel safe.

If you are carrying a bag, always have these items in front of you and away from the road to minimize such occurrences. You might also ditch the bag and opt for pickpocket-proof garments instead so that thieves don’t even know you’re carrying cash.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Typically locals carry a maximum of RM 200 ($44). Most vendors are going cashless and accept payments via credit card and e-wallet.

Stay safe when exploring Malaysia at night. It is perfectly okay to walk around at night in Malaysia; however, be sure to use your judgment — especially on less-crowded and dimmer streets during late nights.

Uncle Lim’s Durian Farm & Kluang Day Tour

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city life to enjoy an excursion to Uncle Lim’s Durian Farm and rustic Kluang. Your first stop at Uncle Lim’s Durian Farm is where you get to feast on various premium durian breeds at attractive local prices. You pay for what you eat and there will be no gimmicky durian buffet of low-grade kampung durians. Next, you will proceed to Kluang where you get to visit Kluang Coffee Factory for guided tour and traditional coffee sampling, Kluang Shopping Center for shopping and lunch, Zenxin farm for organic farm tour, Yuen Fatt for famous Shanghai mooncakes and a recommended local restaurant for dinner. 0630am – Pick-up from Marsiling MRT Station to Uncle Lim’s Durian Farm. Have a light breakfast at home before coming.

0900am – Arrive at Uncle Lim Durian Farm order a sample of different durian breeds for sharing.  You will have a chance to roam around the durian plantation (beware of falling durians…) and see for yourself how a durian tree looks like.  Besides durians, you can also feast on tropical fruits such as rambutans and mangosteens.

1000am – Leave the durian farm for Kluang Coffee Factory (note that Kluang Coffee Factory usually closes at 12pm on Saturdays and is not open on Sundays).

1130am – Arrive at the Kluang Coffee Factory for a short tour to understand how coffee powder is made and the difference between black and white coffee. You would have a chance to sample some fresh coffee.

Show some support by buying some traditional coffee from this humble little factory. 🙂

1230pm – Transfer to Kluang Mall for lunch. There are a variety of restaurants available and there is also a food street (small food court) with the popular Tangkak beef noodles. If you are not hungry, the modern mall has Uniqlo, H&M and a supermarket for some shopping.

100pm – Arrive at Kluang Mall. Free and easy.

(If shopping is not your thing, we recommend visiting Kluang Art Street where you can take 3D art pictures).

300pm – Depart Kluang Mall for Yuen Fatt for their famous Shanghai mooncakes.

400pm – Arrive at Zenxin Organic Farm – one of the most established and largest organic farms in Malaysia. This scenic 100-acre park comprises of a greenhouse area for vegetables like Cai Xin, Kang Kung, Spinach, Kai Lan, Bitter Gourd etc. and dragon fruit farm and other tropical fruits, such as passion fruit, papaya, pineapple etc. and more than 100 types of herbs. It is a visitor friendly farm combining the educational and recreational purposes where visitors can explore and learn about the farm operations. Planning a Singapore and Malaysia trip? Brilliant! This is a great part of the world and these destinations make a great combination.

Thanks to Singapore and Malaysia being so close together, it’s very easy to travel from Singapore to Malaysia and to enjoy a trip with both destinations.

In this article, I’m going to give you the perfect Singapore and Malaysia itinerary so all you have to is follow it! I do this by walking through a Singapore Malaysia itinerary for up to ten days.

If you are looking for a 4 days 3 nights Singapore Malaysia itinerary, simply stop reading at the 4 day point. If you want longer, keep reading! It’s easy to adjust this Singapore Malaysia tour itinerary to whatever time period you like.

I also describe exactly how to get from Singapore to Malaysia at the end as well as give you some specific Singapore to Malaysia day trip suggestions.

This is a Singapore to Malaysia itinerary which assumes you arrive in Singapore and leave from Malaysia. You can reverse it and make it a Malaysia Singapore itinerary instead.

You will also need to factor in time to get back to your starting point if you need to fly out of the same airport from where you started. Luckily, flights, taxis and buses between Malaysia and Singapore are quick and easy.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 4-10 Days

Day 1 – arrive in singapore.

Today is an introduction to Singapore.

• Start the day at Gardens by the Bay. Visit the conservatories and OCBC Skyway ( tickets here) where you walk among the futuristic trees. If you have kids, take bathers and also visit the childrens gardens. This is my favourite attraction in all of Singapore so don’t skip it! If you are on a budget, it’s still worth coming and walking around for free.
• Have lunch in the shopping centre at the base of the iconic Marina Bay Sands which is right next to Gardens by the Bay.
• Take the short train trip to Clarke Quay and walk though here and the historic Fort Canning on your way to the next attraction.
• Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Singapore ( discount tickets here ).

Day 2 – Singapore

Today is all about discovering Singapore’s three main cultural groups.

• Start the day with some breakfast in Little India and then visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
• Walk to the nearby Malay area of Kampong Glam. Visit the Malay Heritage Centre and Sultan Mosque before having some Malay food for lunch.
• Finish with some temple visits in Chinatown before shopping for souvenirs at the markets here and having some great Chinese food for dinner.

Day 3 – Singapore

Your final day in Singapore is all about fun, Sentosa Island style! Sentosa Island is a small island just off the tip of Singapore which is easily reached by public transport, cable car or even walking over. It’s packed full of fun attractions and is Singapore’s playground.

It’s full of top class facilities and just walking around is fun. There are so many different attractions that it’s hard for me to say exactly what you should add to your Singapore Malaysia trip itinerary. It depends on your interests and budget as the attractions can be expensive and add up quickly. There are also many free attractions on Sentosa which you may prefer to stick to.

Here are my top recommendations:

• Start by heading to the Merlion Plaza and taking a photo of the Sentosa sign with the giant merlion as pictured above. Consider climbing up inside the Merlion Tower for great views ( tickets here ).
• Take the Skyline Luge and chair lift. This is one of our favourites!
• For more adrenaline rushes, try Mega Adventure where you can zipline and take a 15 metre jump or fly at iFly !
• Visit easily one of the best aquariums in the world at S.E.A. Aquarium ( tickets here ).
• If you have kids, visit the Palawan Pirate Ship. A free (and amazing) water playground.
• Walk to the Southern Most Point of Continental Asia.
• Enjoy the beaches
• Visit Fort Siloso and learn some WWII history

In the evening, head to the free light shows at Resorts World Sentosa.

I also recommend you take the cable car over one way ( discount tickets here ). The views are great! I also love Universal Studios Singapore but with one day, I would go to a few different attractions instead rather than spending the day at one so you get a better taste of Sentosa Island.

There is also the Sentosa Fun Pass that can save you a lot of money. You basically buy a number of tokens and then exchange these tokens at various attractions on the island. The number you need depends on what you want to see. I suggest you will at least want 80.

Where To Stay In Singapore

LUXURY: Marina Bay Sands

For luxury and the ultimate Singapore experience, you can’t go past the Marina Bay Sands, one of the most iconic hotel buildings in the world.

Have great views over Singapore as you relax in the infinity pool or visit the Sands SkyPark Observation Deck. Shop and eat in the downstairs shopping centre or enjoy one of the many hotel restuarants or room service. You can use the gym, day spa or simply have a drink at the pool bar.

There are a range of room types with doubles and twins on offer. All are spacious and well appointed and have everything you would expect in a 5 star hotel. You can pick the view you want and there are suites for extra luxury with their own living area.

In addition to staying in a fabulous hotel, you are also just moments walk away from Gardens By The Bay and other top Singapore attractions and there is a subway station below the hotel making sightseeing easy. This is the ultimate Singapore hotel and you have to stay here at least once!

MIDRANGE: Village Hotel Bugis

The Village Hotel Bugis is our favourite hotel for a mix of a great price, very convenient location and a good standard of rooms and facilties. Located close to Bugis MRT station and many shopping centres, it’s easy to get around to all of Singapore here. It’s also located in the Malay area, Kampong Glam, and a short walk from Little India.

There are a range of room types which are all comfortable and well appointed, if on the cosy side. This includes family options which makes this a great choice with kids – we have stayed here with ours multiple times.

The hotel also has a swimming pool, gym and restaurants.

Day 4 –Johor Bahru

It’s time to say a sad goodbye to Singapore before heading over the causeway to more adventures in Malaysia!

There is more information below about how to travel between Malaysia and Singapore. It’s very straightforward.

Day 5 – Johor Bahru And Melaka

This morning, it’s time to see some of Johor Bahru before catching a bus in the afternoon to Melaka.

• Head to central Johor Bahru near the causeway to Singapore. You can do some shopping or explore the streets to the west of the main strip here. Some are quite pretty and it’s a nice area to stroll around. Eat lunch before leaving Johor Bahru.
• Take a taxi to the main bus station in Johor Bharu, Larkin Bus Terminal, and then take a bus to Melaka. You can book bus tickets here on some great bus services. The bus takes about three hours and I recommend you book a bus for the early afternoon.
• Take a taxi to your hotel, freshen up and head to Jonker Street in the evening. If it’s Friday or Saturday night, enjoy the night market, but there are plenty of places to eat any night on this famous strip.

Note that Melaka and Malacca are different ways to spell the same place.

If you have your own vehicle on this journey, I recommend stopping at Muar on your way. It does not take much extra time to do this, but Muar is a pretty city with some great street art and is a great plae to break up the journey.

Where To Stay In Johor Bahru

Luxury: doubletree by hilton hotel johor bahru.

Located just minutes from the Causeway in a convenient location, the DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru is a great choice if you want a luxury hotel which is easy to use as a base to explore both Johor Bahru and Singapore.

Despite not being rated as a five-star hotel, it is our top pick of the options near the Causeway. It has first class facilities including a stunning outdoor swimming pool on the 13th floor, four restaurants, gym, steam room, spa and wifi.

Each of the hotel’s spacious guest rooms have everything you would expect from a top option such as air conditioning, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a pillow menu. There are also larger suites with separate living areas as well as rooms which are apartment style and have a kitchenette with washing machine. All this for a great price!

MIDRANGE: Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru

For a midrange price option, you can’t go past the Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru. Also well located near the Causeway and shopping, this is a great base for Singapore and Johor Bahru exploration.

There are many facilities at this hotel. You can use the tennis and squash courts, a gym, sauna and a yoga studio.  Other facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, a day spa, three onsite restaurants and bars.

There are a range of accommodation options at this hotel. In addition to standard hotel rooms, you can book a room with a separate living and sleeping area or even a room with a kitchenette.

BUDGET: Baguss Hotel And Serviced Apartment

For a real bargain, consider the Baguss Hotel and Serviced Apartments. Close to the Causeway and downtown shopping areas, this standard, 3-star hotel is especially a great choice for families and groups looking for accommodation.

There are a range of hotel rooms suitable from two to four people. Each hotel room includes air conditioning, a TV, wifi, tea and coffee making facilities and a refrigerator. For larger groups, there are 3 bedroom apartments which can accommodate up to 6 people. These apartments include a kitchen and lounge room.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary 5 Days

If you are looking for a 5 days 4 nights Singapore Malaysia itinerary then you can do the five days above and head back to Singapore to fly out on day 5 instead of on to Melaka.

You could also consider spending all 5 days in Singapore and just taking a day trip to Johor Bahru. If money isn’t an issue, this is a good choice. Otherwise, it is more budget friendly to stay in Johor Bahru accommodation.

If Melaka sounds interesting to you, you could also follow the first four days above and then do a day trip to Melaka on the final day of your Singapore Malaysia 5 days itinerary ( find one here ). This is a long day but I have done it myself and it’s very doable.

You can also hire a private taxi here for the day to travel quickly and easily to Malaysia for the day.

Day 6 – Melaka

Today is all about exploring Melaka’s historic centre and Chinatown before heading to your final stop, Kuala Lumpur, in the evening.

Get your walking legs on! Everything mentioned here is close and, while you can take taxis or trishaws to get around, the attractions are so close together that there is no real need.

• Start at the Sultanate Palace where you can walk through a replica of the palace of Sultan Mansur Shah who ruled Melaka from 1456 to 1477.
• Take a photo of Porta de Santiago and explore the ruins of St Paul’s Church.
• Walk downhill to Stradthuys, the town hall and governor’s residence that dates back to the Dutch in 1650. Trishaws tend to congregate here so you can go on a ride on one if you like.
• Walk over the river to Chinatown and head to 8 Heeren Street to check out this 18th century Dutch period residence.
• Next, walk through Chinatown to Baba and Nonya Heritage Centre.
• By now, you have probably worked up an appetite. Eat some lunch.
• Finish your Melaka day tour by visiting three temples all close together: Cheng Hoon Temple, Masjid Kampung Kling and Sri Poyatha Venayagar Moorthi Temple.

In the late afternoon, catch your onward bus to Kuala Lumpur. This takes about 2.5 hours and I recommend booking a bus from 3-4pm.

Where To Stay In Melaka

Luxury: casa del rio melaka .

Located in a premium position just 300 metres from Jonker Street and right by the river, you will find the best option in Melaka, the stunning 5-star luxury boutique hotel, Casa del Rio Melaka Hotel.

There are a a range of room types on offer including options for up to 6 people in two-bedroom suites. All rooms include standard fittings such as a TV, wifi, tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning and a desk. If you book a suite, you will also have separate living and dining areas. Some suites even include an outdoor spa.

This hotel features first-class facilities with a stunning infinity swimming pool offering views across the Melaka River as well as three restaurants, a gym, a rooftop garden and day spa.

MIDRANGE: Swiss-Garden Hotel Melaka 

This 5-star hotel at a midrange price point is a great choice. Located along the Melaka River just a short taxi ride from Jonker St, the Swiss-Garden Hotel offers guests modern accommodation.

There are a range of rooms which accommodate up to two guests and include all the standard amenities including a TV, air conditioning, wi-fi, tea and coffee making facilities, private balcony and seating area.

You can also book a suite which includes separate dining and living areas. Some rooms  also include panoramic views of the ocean and the Melaka River. Ask for a high level!

The Swiss-Garden Hotel includes a range of great facilities including two big swimming pools, a tennis court and the Sky Garden rooftop bar. The hotel also has direct access to a shopping mall.

BUDGET: T Hotel Melaka

The T Hotel which is located in Melaka City just a 15 minutes walk from Jonker Street, is a good choice for budget travellers.

They offer double, twin, triple or family suites. All are comfortable and clean and come with air conditioning, wifi, a TV, tea and coffee facilities and a seating area.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 7 Days

If you are looking for a 6 nights 7 days Singapore Malaysia itinerary you could stop right here. This does mean that you don’t have much time in Kuala Lumpur. If you would prefer some time in Kuala Lumpur (which I do recommend), drop either Johor Bahur or Melaka, whichever appeals less. It’s easy to get buses from Singapore to Melaka directly or from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur.

You can then pick a day or two from the following three recommmend days in Kuala Lumpur for your Singapore Malaysia itinerary 7 days.

Days 7-9 Kuala Lumpur

Three days in Kuala Lumpur is a great amount of time to get a good taste of this city on your Malaysia Singapore trip.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 10 Days

If you have 10 days, you can add an extra day to Kuala Lumpur using my suggestions in my 3 day itinerary article here .

You could also add an extra day to Singapore if that appeals more or if you want to do an activity there like visit Universal Studios. However, if you are looking for a Singapore Malaysia budget itinerary then the less time in more expensive Singapore, the less you will need to spend so Kuala Lumpur can be a better pick.

Singapore And Malaysia Trip 10+ Days

If you have more than ten days, yay! There are so many great places that you can add on in Malaysia.

Singapore To Malaysia Day Trip

If you don’t have time for a big Singapore Malaysia adventure then you may just with to take a one day trip to Malaysia from Singapore. With a timeframe of less than 5 days, this is what I recommend.

This is completely possible and you could spend a 1 day trip to Malaysia from Singapore doing one of the days in the itinerary above to Johor Bahru or Melaka. Just note with Melaka that you will spend a lot of time travelling over the day but it is highly possible – I have done it myself.

Singapore to Malaysia day trip ideas:

• Legoland Malaysia: The easiest and maybe most fun suggestion is to spend a day at Legoland Malaysia. There are buses directly here from Singapore and it’s a fun and easy place to enjoy. More details here .
• Johor Bahru: You can catch the local bus over the causeway and explore central Johor Bahru.
• Melaka: You can either pay for an expensive day tour here (easiest option) or save on your Singapore Malaysia trip cost and take public transport from Singapore to Melaka and back again and explore Melaka on your own, as per day 6 above. The bus takes about four hours each way so buy your ticket in advance and go early.
• Desaru Coast: This coastal area in Malaysia is just one hour from Singapore with a half-hour ferry ( buy here ) and half-hour shuttle and is perfect if you would like some white sandy beach time or to have some fun visiting attractions such as a huge water park, ostrich, fruit or crocodile farm.

They can pick you up from your Singapore hotel and drop you off there again at the end of the day.

How To Travel From Singapore To Malaysia

Getting from Singapore to Malaysia could really not be easier. There are buses, planes, trains and even taxis across. It’s been streamlined as much as possible because it’s such a popular option with thousands of people doing it all the time.

The easiest way to get across the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia is to hire a private car and driver. These can be quite affordable for a family or small group and you can be picked up and dropped off wherever you like and don’t need to get out of the car at the border.

You can also get a local taxi but they are less flexible. If you catch a Singaporean taxi, they can only drop you at Larkin Terminal in Johor Bahru. If you catch a Malaysian taxi, they can drop you off anywhere in Malaysia but can only pick you up Queen Street Bus Terminal. They also need to be especially licensed to do this – you can’t just take any taxi.

The cheapest (and still quite easy) way to get across is with public, local bus called the Causeway Bus. Note that with the bus, you will need to get off and back on again at both immigration points in Singapore and Malaysia with all your belongings. Once you are through, you simply wait for the next Causeway Bus to come along. You can catch it from:

• Kranji MRT (route CW1) from SGD$1.50 (RM1.90 return)
• Queens Street (route CW2) from SGD$3.50 (RM3.40 return)
• Newton Circus (route CW5) from SGD$3.30 (RM3.40 return)

The buses stop along the way so you can also hop on elsewhere along the route.

If you need to get between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur then I recommend flying.  This is often a very good price and cuts out the longer journey. For further afield than KL, I also recommend flying.

If you are going across to Johor Bahru, Melaka or anywhere else south of Kuala Lumpur then going overland is the best choice. We can book you a taxi from anywhere in Singapore to anywhere in pensinular Malaysia, and there are direct buses too.
