Triund Trek: A Face-Off With The Dhauladhar Range

' src=

The trek up to Triund hill was the tail end event of the entire Himachal backpacking trip. An Unknown path, steep and rocky trail, blind trust in google maps, with nothing but an intuitive sense of direction, an impending deadline, and unexplainable love for mountains. It was a perfect recipe for an adventure. And when it comes to adventures, I am game for it, come what may. Looking back at that trek, it reminds of these beautiful yet lasting words by James Baldwin.

And once you realize that you can do something, it would be difficult to live with yourself if you didn’t do it. James Baldwin, The Paris Review.

There is something with climbing mountains that I simply can’t give up on (read the description of the Instagram post below to know what). climbing mountains gave so much satisfaction that it’s very difficult to live with myself if I didn’t. Especially when you can see the peak challenging you from the window of your hostel, I simply can’t tuck myself under the blanket.

View this post on Instagram Why do you have to trek sir, That busy mind of mine keeps asking me. Why do you have to take the pain And climb huge mountains Why do you have to take the pain To cross slippery rocks Why do you have to take the pain To walk alongside dangerous ridges With a sigh, I reply!! Those huge mountains, Represent the huge challenges I have set for myself Those slippery rocks Represent the pitfalls in my plans The dangerous ridges represent The risks you gotta take to complete the challenges. But above all, Trekking teaches you one thing Really Really well. That is to always, always take One step at a time. No more no less. Just One Step. And soon you'll find yourself On top of the summit. P.S. So, it was the last circuit of the Himachal Backpacking trip with my friends. After a whirlwind trip from Delhi to Kasol and flying high in Bir Billing, we landed in Mcleodganj after what seemed like a grueling journey. The last few days have been intense, hectic and what not. But the moment I put my foot down at Mcleodganj the snow-capped mountains of Dhauladhar range allured me. My whole purpose of adding Mcleodganj to the itinerary was to get a little closer to those massifs. So, I asked my friends if they were up for the trek. All but Hithesh and Santhosh said no. Understandably so.

The choice for me, however, was obvious. I looked at the massifs and gave a thumbs up, “Challenge Accepted and you shall be scaled”. The others planned to explore the Dharamshala the following day. Read on to know all about my experience of the Triund Trek.

Table of Contents

We knew we were up for a challenge. The trek was 8 KM one way. We were planning to go via the Bhagsunag waterfall. This trail was the only option left other than the one from Gallu Devi which was 10 KM one way. The problem, however, was that the trail through Bhagsunag Waterfalls wasn’t very clear on maps or the ground. On top of that, we had a bus to catch in the evening, to reach Delhi. So, we had to start early, be alert mentally about where we were going and push ourselves to not give up until we boarded the bus 😉

So, we set the alarm, woke up, and started the hike at around 6 AM.

triund trek images

We reached the Mcleodganj taxi stand and took the street towards the Bhagsunag temple. After crossing the temple there was a concrete path made all the way to shiva cafe. You can see the Bhagsu Nag waterfall from here. A beautiful stream of water running down between the hills.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls Mcleodganj

The concrete path had too many stairs in between that slowed us down a little. But within no time we reached the famous Shiva Cafe. Because it was too early in the morning, Shiva cafe was closed but it had all the vibes of a peaceful place.

Shiva Cafe McleodGanj

We crossed over the Bhagsunag Waterfalls to reach the other mountain. The trail started to narrow down from here. It didn’t look difficult but had too many diversions and turns. Maps ceased to work and we were left with our own judgment on which trail to take.

Into The Unknown Trails To Triund

One of the thumb rule you can use is to see if the trail has any footmarks, indicating recent usage. And another is to look at the peak and see if you’re not deviating far from the peak. We crossed that trail and reached a point with some magnificent views of the sleeping Mcleodganj.

Sunrise Over McleodGanj

The sun just started uncovering the lush greenery from the low-lit early mornings. We continued walking and this particular stretch was a little steep but there was a hut at the end of it. So with pumped-up energy, we reached the hut.

Breakfast Time

We ordered some Maggi and chai to recoup some energy. There was an elderly man running the store. We also asked him if we were on the right path to reach the peak. He nodded with a smile. Such a lovely smile 😀 We paid for the meals and started the hike again.

Breakfast On Triund Trail

The trail just disappeared from here on. We knew we had to reach the ridge in front of us. All we could see were thorny and dense plants in front of us. A muddy path appeared on close inspection. We just assumed it would be the trail and started walking with the sight undeviated from the peak.

The Trail Of Thorns and Hops

Soon it leads to another trail and we hopped onto that and then another one appeared and just like that, we navigated past the thorny patch. It was indeed a real-life example of “Set your eyes on the destination and you’ll always figure a way to reach there.” Because sometimes that’s life.

You have a sense of where you wanna go and you reach there by trial and error.

Climb Or Walk?

We were now at the start of the ridge. On one side it was the grandiosity of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Look at those brick-sized brick walls in front of the mighty mountains. It felt as if, if not for their mercy, those brick walls would’ve crumbled a long time ago. And on the other side, we had a steep climb ahead of us.

Birds Eye View Of McleodGanj From Triund Trek

While the ridge was really steep, almost as if it touched the sky but there was another route available by the side. We started hiking on the other route. And boy we were so glad we took this route. Just after a 100m- 200m walk on this route, we found another cafe. It wasn’t open yet but there were a few granite slabs turned into Sofas for customers to sit. I sat on one of the granite sofas. This cafe was almost on the edge of the mountain. So my eyesight slowly went down the valley before taking a steep climb up to a towering snow-capped mountain. What a tiny speck of dust I was in front of the majestic mountain.

Cafe With The View On Triund Trail

As much as we wanted to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top made us restart the hike again. The hiking route took us up the ridge again and this time we continued on the ridge without any deviations.

The sun was right on our backs. The sweater I got slowly turned from a shield to baggage. The ridge walk became rough after a while. With steep climbs on a rocky path, it just threw one blow after another.

The Magic Unfurls

By then the snow-capped mountains started wrapping clouds around them. As if they’re doing a magic show to entertain us and make us forget and endure the pain of the steep climb. The occasional sight of a Himalayan Griffon made it all worthwhile.

Meadows And Massifs Of Triund

The first steep climb was behind us and the mountain rewarded us with another. We conquered that as well thinking the peak or Triund campsite was just at the top. But I think the ridge fell in love with our determination, So it presented yet another steep climb, we trekked up that too and then another and another and another. And we yelled at the ridge, “Up Up here we go” .

Trails of Triund

We kept taking small breaks and continued the climb. Occasionally looking back at the downward slope all the way to Mcleodganj. From that point, Mcleodganj was as tiny as an ant. The climb didn’t end there and the steep slopes kept challenging us. Added to that, the sun was merciless too. So we took the meadows to ease the stress on the legs for a while.

Meadows Of Triund Trek

After a brief walk on the meadows, the trail flattened out. The meadows were dotted with huge rocks.

Rocky Trails Of Triund

Face-Off With Dhauladhar Range

To our utter surprise, We reached the Triund Campsite at around 10:15 AM. And there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. With nothing but courage and a paraglide away from where we stood. I just stood there, taking in everything I can.

Reaching Triund Hilltop

The slippery glacial slopes, the towering sharpness of the peak, the clouds caressing its crown. I sometimes wonder, how on earth do such meadows even exist. I mean, look around, all you see are nothing but towering and unreachable peaks. Yet, almost magically, you have this Triund hill. A hill with all its meadows makes the perfect ground for you to witness the mighty mountains. I sometimes feel its all part of a clever architect’s design.

The Magnificent Dhauladhar Range

I was in love with that place. Just resting there, looking at those mountains made me unreasonably happy. With enough time at hand, we decided to take it slow.

Tranquility Of Triund

Looking at the cloud patterns it appeared to rain, so at around 12 PM we started the climb down the same way. Considering the trail was completely downhill, it was quick and not as tiring as it was. One last click before the rain kicked in xD

Posers Of Triund

On the way back we saw a few people. They may have climbed up via the trail starting at Gallu Devi Temple, stayed at the Triund campsite overnight (which I believe is now banned), and were climbing down. We climbed down the hill, hiked through the thorny trail, and after the last stretch of those winding narrow trails which were now familiar, we saw the Shiva Cafe. I was proved wrong when I said it had the vibes of a peaceful place. Against all my thoughts, it was surprisingly crowded. So crowded that we had to wait for a while to get a seat to sit and eat.

Shiva Cafe On the Way Back

We reached the La Vaca Hostel at around 3:30 PM. Met the other guys, packed our bags, and left to Dharamshala for the bus back to Delhi. For the first time during that trip, I stood there in silence witnessing the myriad shades of sunset sky. And just like that, we bid goodbye to the sun, Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas.

The Goodbye Sunset At Dharamshala

As part of my effort to help more and more travelers witness the beauty of this world, I’m adding few FAQs to help you plan a hike up to the Triund Peak.

Why Should You Choose Triund Trek?

How long is the triund trek.

There are two routes you can choose for the trek. The trek to Triund via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is the shortest but also the toughest. The trail via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is 8KM one way . The other route to Triund via Gallu Devi temple is 10 KM one way but it’s not as tough as the first one.

How to do Triund trek?

If it was earlier, I would’ve advised you to set aside 2 days for the Triund Trek. The sunset and sunrise are supposedly breathtaking. But camping is now banned. So you can plan to do this in one day. I would suggest you start very early

How To Reach Triund Trek?

The basecamp for the Triund Trek is Mcleodganj. McLedoganj is 8 KM from Dharamshala and is frequented by local buses every 20 Mins. Dharamshala, in turn, is connected with all major cities in India via road. There are overnight Volvo buses running to and from Dharamshala to all major cities like Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi. So you can reach Dharamshala by bus from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.

You can even choose to fly down to Dharamshala. Book a ticket to Kangra Airport from wherever you’re in the world.

While at Mcleodganj, ask for Dharamkot which is another small area near McLeodganj. After reaching Dharamkot, ask for Bhagunaag Temple or look it up on maps. Once at the Bhagsunaag temple, take the concrete path towards Bhagsunag Waterfall. The waterfall is visible clearly once you cross the temple. Follow the trail to reach the Triund Peak via Bhagsunaag waterfalls. If you want to take the less intense Gallu Devi trail, then the Gallu Devi temple is about 1.6 KM from Bhagsunag Temple.

How difficult is Triund Trek?

Although the difficulty is subjective, I can assure you that if you have basic fitness, (If you can clock 5KM sprint in 40-45 Mins) then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. Even if you take the trial via Bhagsu Nag waterfalls. So, I would classify it as an easy to moderate trek. Triund trek is regarded as one of the best treks for beginners.

How To Plan For Triund Trek?

If you are coming from Delhi or nearby cities, take an overnight bus on one of your leisure weekends. Reach Dharamkot and start the trek using the directions mentioned above. Complete the trek. Stay in one of the hostels (I stayed in La Vaca Hostel , inexpensive for students too and very cozy). Explore Dharamshala the next day and head back to your city via another overnight bus.

In Case you’re planning for Triund Trek from Hyderabad or Bengaluru or Mumbai, then I recommend you to club a few other places in Himachal Pradesh. I personally took a week off and explored Kasol(Check out my blog post here ), hiked up the meadows of Kheerganga(Check out the DIY guide here ), Manali, did Paragliding Bir Billing, and landed at Mcleodganj for the trek. It was very hectic for me so you may delete or swap a few places. My strong recommendation is don’t come all the way just for Triund Trek.

Essentials For Triund Trek?

If you’re doing a one-day trek to Triund, then below are few items I definitely recommend:

  • Sweatshirt (If you’re starting very early)
  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Comfortable pair of clothes.
  • Another pair if you wish to get into Bhagsunaag waterfalls on your way back.
  • 2-3 Liters of Water. It gets really hot at the top during the summer months.
  • Shades/sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Protein bars or Nutri Bikies to energize yourself. Don’t pack the entire supermarket citing the hiking reason. And PLEASE DON’T LITTER.

P.S: For Ladies, please pack essentials as deemed necessary by you beyond the above-mentioned items. Safe trekking.

P.P.S: I’ve mentioned the above essentials keeping summer months in mind. Please plan according the season in which you’re planning to go.

Is Triund Trek Safe?

Whenever you are in the mountains, you are always at the mercy of nature. Please respect the nature and conditions and you will be good. The trail from Bhagsunag waterfalls to Triund is a continuous climb. I am sure of its slippery nature in monsoons. The trail from the Gallu Devi temple is a ridge walk. So, it is quite dangerous in the event of a landslide. Otherwise, the trail is very good for hiking. Just respect the nature and overcast conditions and you will be safe in the lap of nature.

Can Triund trek be done alone?

It is given that Triund Trek is very ideal for beginners and also the trail is clear from the Gallu Devi temple. So, even solo trekkers and travelers can hike up to the Triund campsite without any doubts in mind. Take sufficient snacks and water and precautions about your personal safety while you’re on and off the trail. It’s highly likely that you will find enough people to befriend if you take the Gallu Devi temple. So rest assured and you can do this trek completely on your own without a guide.

Where To Stay In Your Trip To Triund Trek?

Dharamkot is the basecamp for a lot of treks in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. By the virtue of that, there are a number of backpackers hostels in McleodGanj and Dharamkot. You can find branded backpacker hostels like Hosteller, La Vaca Hostel, etc. We stayed in La Vaca hostel and it was really comfortable and affordable. You can check for bookings on booking.com or Airbnb.

Other Treks Near Triund!

So, if you have more time at hand you can go for other trekking destinations around Triund. Treks like Indrahar Pass Trek, Laka Glacier Trekking are all one day trek away from Triund hill. Refer to this article for more details.

Cost of Triund Trek!

Barring the personal expenses, the cost for Triund Trek is INR 0 rupees. You read that right, unsure why, but there is no entry fee for Triund trek. So if you’re doing it on your own it’s completely free of cost.

What’s The Height Of Triund Hill?

The Triund Hill is at a height aka Altitude of 2850m above sea level. It is situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.

Triund Trek Map/Route

Refer to the below-handmarked trek route for reaching Triund Hill from Mcleodganj. I’ve marked the trails for both the trails of Bhagusnag Waterfalls as well as the Gallu Devi Temple trail.

Triund Route Map From McleodGanj

Should You Choose Kheerganga Trek or Triund Trek?

Honestly, there is no right answer. For me, Kheerganga was more exciting simply because it had much more variety. Kheerganga has meadows, forests, steep climbs, waterfalls, and above all hot water springs. You can read about my experience here . But on the other hand, Triund Trek brought me much closer to the snow-capped mountains which were just distant backgrounds in pictures during Kheerganga Trek. However, Kheerganga is a moderate difficulty trek and you need two days to complete the trek. So if you have two days to spare, give Kheerganga a shot. If you’re looking for a quick weekend trek, then go for Triund.

Hope the FAQs help you plan your trip better. Have a good time in the Himalayas and while you’re there, take care of the mountains.

A steep climb on the Triund trek that is marked by rocks and boulders

Difficulty Level: Easy

The trek involves gradual to steep ascents that even amateurs can cover. And since the Mcleodganj to Triund distance is not much, it is not very exhausting either. The first 5 km of the Triund trek are simple and not very undulating. Thereon, the Triund trek route gets steep and requires a sturdy walk. This stretch is popularly known as 22 curves because of the 22 sharp curves en route.

However, if you are trekking during winters, the trek becomes slightly difficult due to the presence of snow on the otherwise firm and well-defined path.

Triund Trek: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need For Triund

Table of contents.

Triund Trek- the most sought-after trek in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Three reasons-

  • It’s an easy and short trek. It can be easily done over a weekend.
  • Accessibility of the trek. Triund is in Dharamshala; Dharamshala is very well connected by road and air, and the starting point of the trek (Gallu Devi) is also easily accessible by road.
  • This👇

Triund Trek

The above three reasons all together make it a perfect weekend getaway destination, especially for North India.

Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the easiest and DIY Himalayan trek. It’s in Dharamshala, near Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, India.

It’s easy because there’s a well-defined route to reach the Triund top. The trail goes through the woods of Oak trees, Pine, Deodar, and Rhododendron. The trail offers you a picturesque view of the spectacular Kangra valley on the one side and the mighty snow-covered Dhauladhar range on the other side.

You also get to see the birds’ eye view of the whole Kangra district and HPCA cricket stadium (the most beautiful cricket stadium of India). The trail offers absolutely stunning views.

View of Indrahar pass

However, the trail is always crammed with people. As I have told you, it’s the most sought after trek in North India and makes an ideal weekend getaway destination.

Now, let’s talk about Triund trek in detail.

Note : At the time of writing this, I am living in Bhagsunag village (one of the nearby villages to Triund) for the last six months, and in this much time, I’ve been to Triund 4-5 times. That means I know about Triund very well and writing this complete guide from a locals point of the eye.

For any sort of help regarding Triund trek, feel free to comment, email, or you can also WhatsApp me. You’ll find the whatsApp number in the last of the post.

Triund Trek Height

  • The height of the triund trek is 2850m; 9000 ft.
  • The height of the snowline (4 km ahead from Triund) is 3350m; 10000ft.

Triund Trek Difficulty Level

It’s a one size fits all type of trek. The Triund trek has got something for everybody; a first-timer, a beginner, and a veteran.

You may find the last stretch of the trail a bit challenging. It’s also famously known as ’22 curves’ as it has 22 tiring curves that you’ve to cross before you reach the Triund top.

Honestly, I never felt it challenging. Maybe because of my fitness; I run daily. But some people do find it difficult.

Triund Trek Distance

  • Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek) to Triund distance: 7 Km
  • Mcleodganj to Triund distance: 9 km
  • Dharamshala to Triund distance: 18-20 km

Triund Trek Length

It depends on, where do you start the trek.

  • Gallu Devi – 7km (the usual and the official route)
  • Bhagsunag via Henni village – 7 km
  • Bhagsunag waterfall via Karthani – 6 km

Best Time For Triund Trek

  • The best time for Triund is from April to June , and October to December .

Note : Don’t do the Triund trek in the rainy season. It rains heavily here in Dharamshala. In winter, the route gets closed because Triund receives heavy snowfall.

Triund Trek Route

There are three routes to go to Triund:

  •   Gallu Devi – It’s the official one. All the tourists take this route only. You’ll also find the tour guide here only.
  • Bhagsunag Village – Locals and nearby villagers, take this route and also some tourists those who are aware of this route. This route goes through the Heini village of upper Bhagsu, and after some distance, it gets adjoined to the usual Gallu Devi route. The trail is not well defined, so the chances are you may get lost.
  • Bhagsunag waterfall – This trail is very steep and goes through dense forests. It’s advisable not to trek through this route without any local guide.

Triund trek route

Triund Trek Timings

  • 07:00 am – 11:30 am

After 11:30 AM, It’s not allowed to go because you won’t be able to come back the same day; the night stay at Triund is prohibited.

Triund Trek weather

  • It’s mostly cold here.

You know how the weather behaves in the mountains. Its bright sunny and then in a whip it will start raining.

Triund Night Stay

  • Overnight camping and staying at the hilltop of Triund is not allowed at any cost.

Irresponsible travel leads to this ban. Please, travel sustainably .

At Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek), officials take your identity proof and record your name and details to make sure you return the same day.

Triund Trek Cost

  • 1000- 1500 INR per person

The tour guide charges a minimum of 1000 rupees per person. It’s not a fixed rate. Use your bargaining skills here.

PedalThrottle Recommendation: Ditch them and ping me. I’ll connect you to an amazing, sincere local tour guide and that too at the cheapest rate compared to all the Triund packages out there. The only condition is that you need to be a minimum of four people and promise to leave no trash on the trail.

Enroute Triund

Triund Trek Itinerary

  • One day Itinerary
  • 08:00 AM- Reach the Gallu (the starting point of the trek)
  • 09:00 AM – Start the trek to Triund
  • Soak in the beauty of nature
  • Keep getting mesmerized by the view along the trail
  • Take a break at Magic view café
  • 12:00 –01:00 PM – Reach the Triund top
  • It’s time for a photo session
  •  Spend some quiet time with yourself and the mountains
  • 04:00 PM – Start descending back to Gallu Devi.
  • Have some amazing food at some amazing cafes in Mcleodganj market
  • Head back to your hotels

Triund Trek Package

I have to be honest here.

I genuinely don’t want you to opt for any packages provided by these irresponsible travel companies. By choosing these travel companies, you’re indirectly harming the ecosystem, and anyway, they charge you a lot more than the reasonable rate.

Before you decide to go with any of the travel company, ask them about their company’s environmental and responsible tourism policies. Choose only those who support responsible tourism.

FYI : The ban on overnight camping at Triund top got imposed last year only. The travel companies and we are equally responsible for this. It’s good that its banned now.

Last year on New Year’s Eve, there were more than 2000 people at Triund. Can you imagine the negative impacts of this? At such a height, where would all waste go?

Locals tell that there was nothing but tissues, bottles, sanitary pads, and plastic bottles.

Please be a responsible traveler.

Take all your trash back to the city where it can be appropriately decomposed and also don’t bring any speaker. I don’t understand what’s need to come in nature to listen to songs, you can do that in your room.

Locals also tell that earlier, there used to be a lot of songbirds. Now it’s just water bottles and Lays packets.

PedalThrottle recommendation: Hire any local tour guide from the nearby village. I’ll help you with that.

Why should you go with a local tour guide instead of a company?

  • Locals care about their place, the environment more than the tourists, and any other travel company. Their intention is never just to make money.
  • They’ll tell you lovely stories about the place as it’s their native place. Who can be a better person than locals to talk about their place?
  • They’re always willing to go the extra mile for you to make your experience memorable.  Like a travel company, they never want to just get rich off of you.
  • By choosing them, you support their livelihood.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj : A complete guide

Standing over the green meadows at the top of Triund,  I was overwhelmed   by the sight of the snow covered  imposing face of the Himalayas. I can hardly ever forget that image! At the same time, it was natural for me to feel philosophical up there. At the top, it suddenly turns adventure into spirituality, a very unique experience indeed! However, in order to experience that unique feeling, one has to complete a 10 km long trek. Though the Himalayas offer scores of trekking options, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is one of the moderate ones. If you are up for that experience, here’s a complete guide to the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

{To make your reading complete, here’s the link to our Triund trek diary:  Triund: Trekking in a garden }.  {For more such trekking plans, do check out:  Dzukou Valley Trek }

The base location: McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

The location of Triund near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala couldn’t be any better. Its history, heritage, scenic views, cultural and spiritual vibes are reasons for me to go back again and again. It was established as a hill-station by the British in the later part of the 19th century. In fact, it’s named after a British lieutenant governor- David Friell Mcleod.

{Read about another hill-station named after a British official:  Dalhousie }

It was only in the post-independence era, in 1959, Tibetan leader- His Highness the Dalai Lama sought political refuge in India. In an act of solidarity with the Tibetan freedom struggle, Indian government permitted to set up his capital in exile in McLeod Ganj. Since then,  McLeod Ganj has become a hub of Tibetan Buddhism, and is known as ‘Little Lhasa’ (the capital of Tibet).

On my part, I have a fondness for Buddhist philosophy as well as Tibetan culture, especially their colourful Monasteries.  Besides, Dharamshala is also home to tea gardens, heritage sites and much more. In many ways, it reminds me of  Darjeeling  (have look). Find a list of major tourist attractions in Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj in a section  below .

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: A fact sheet

Triund peak is 2850 meters (9350 feet) above sea level. The  route of  Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is 9-10 kilometers (one way) from the base to the top, and can be covered in 5-6 hours. If one starts early in the morning, one can complete the Triund trek in one day. However, a night-stay in a tent at the Triund peak overseeing the snowy mountains is an amazing experience not to miss.

For your information, some trekkers go much beyond Triund peak. They trek up to snow-line at 3500 meters (10,000 feet), and Indrahar pass at 4300 meters (14108 ft). Thus, if you are interested in trekking beyond Triund peak, have some more days in hand.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: How to plan

We heard that trekkers do it in all seasons across the year. But in general, in my view, spring (March-April) is the best time. The temperature is just perfect, neither too cold nor too hot. Besides, clear skies mean the best views. And of course, not to forget the  Rhododendrons  ( Buraansh in Hindi). Because Rhododendron flowers bloom only in the spring.  Believe me, the walk among the Rhododendrons is absolutely enjoyable.

triund-trekking-gang

Monsoons could be risky due to possibility of landslide/ rocks falling off. Besides, thick clouds block views of the valley. Winters would be too cold to enjoy, especially the night camping at the top. In the summer, day time trekking would be really difficult; but one can start in the wee hours of the morning.

Arranging the trek (with a guide or without):

Though one really doesn’t need a guide to trek, it’s good to have one if you are doing it the first time, or you are with family. The guide’s company provides all amenities like tents, blankets and food/ water, etc. They carry all the stuff by mountain-hardened horses. They charge approximately Rs. 1000 per person, including guide services, tents, sleeping gear, food, etc.

If you need a guide, you may contact Anil (we have his mobile phone number; just ask in the comment section).

To camp overnight or not:

No doubt, camping for the night at the top is a must do. The blanket of stars spread across the clear night sky makes it an unforgettable experience. The nearby snow-clad mountains are visible even in the darkness of night. And if it is a full moon night, one would enjoy sitting outside the tents or walking around the plateau. Plus, the experience of the morning-after is also beautiful. See in the picture below how a morning at the top looks like.

Alone or in a group:

While travelling in groups can be a little limiting (freedom) in general, I would say it’s more enjoyable trekking (and other adventure trips) in groups rather than alone. Moreover, trekking in group reduces the fear factor, and calms down the nerves.

The trek route and schedule

The two routes:.

There are two main routes to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj:

  • While one route starts from Bhagsunag temple side, the other one starts from the Guna Devi temple.
  • Though the route that starts from Bhagsunag temple is a bit shorter than the other one, it’s steeper at places.
  • The route starting Guna Devi temple is longer, but has gentler slopes. However, in order to take this route, one needs to hire a vehicle to get dropped at Guna Devi temple, some 2-3 kms away. Else, add that distance in the trek itself, which makes it around 12+ kilometers.
  • In any case, both the routes have easy to moderate slopes at different points.
  • Overall, I would suggest first timers to take the Guna Devi temple route.

triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

When to start:

  • In order to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj in one day, one should start as early as possible in the day so as to reach the top by early afternoon. This way, one has some time in hand to spend at the top, and enough time to reach back McLeod Ganj before it’s dark.
  • If one is planning for night camping, the starting time can be a little late in the morning. But it’s always good to start early so as to avoid trekking in the afternoon sun, unless it’s winter or spring.

The trekking path:

As Triund is a popular trek route in McLeod Ganj, the trekking path is well laid out. Moreover, unlike many trekking routes, one would not get lost on the way. At places, the path is like a stairway made of rocks/ stones. At other places, it’s just a gentle slope to hike. It’s only towards the end of the trek that the path becomes a little steep and a bit difficult, that’s only about 1 km.

One thing that I loved particularly about the trekking path was the abundance of blooming Rhododendron trees. Interestingly, number of these trees kept increasing as we gained height. So much so that at one point, it just felt like trekking in a garden! You will experience the same if you are trekking in the spring.

rhododendrons-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

The Midway rest points:

On the way, there are two proper halting stations, which really means two decent eateries. The first one is called the Magic point, approximately 2 kms from the starting point.

Just ahead of the Magic point, look for a small off-route towards left side. Hike a bit to find a nice view point, perfect for photography. I liked a huge black rock there inching out of the hill surface like a cliff. It’s easy to climb up there and take cool clicks!

The second one doesn’t have a name, but it’s like a little polythene covered snack point. After the second rest point, the trekking route becomes gradually more difficult.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

How is it at the top:

Once you reach the top, it’s but obvious to be overwhelmed by the sight of those snow-clad Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. You will feel as if the grand mountains are smiling at you and are welcoming you to their home. Instantaneously, all the pain taken in the last 5-6 hours would vanish, and would seem totally worth it.

After a while, you will notice the lush green plateau beneath your feet. Huge pieces of boulders interspersing the meadows look fascinating!

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: Miscellaneous Tips

In this section, I list out a few miscellaneous tips which might be helpful in planning and making up your mind for the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

How to reach:

  • By air: Gaggal airport, 15 kms away | Flights from Delhi and Chandigarh
  • By train: Joginder Nagar is the nearest station, 70 kms away
  • By road: Regular comfort buses from Delhi (~500 kms) and Chandigarh (250 kms) | Or, one can drive

Where to stay:

  • Budget hotels:  Moon Walk Residency | Hotel Akash | Albela House | Grand View Lodge | Treebo Trend Roshan House | Green Hotel | King Castle
  • Hostels:  The Hosteller (Bhagsunag | Mall Road) | Moustache | Zostel | Mitra Hostel | Young Monk Hostel & Cafe | Alt-Life Dharamkot | La Vaca India | goSTOPS.

Where to eat:

The Clay Oven | Tibet Kitchen | Hummingbird cafe | Tibetan Mandala cafe | Moonpeak cafe | Nick’s Italian Kitchen | Jimmy’s Italian | Illiterati Books & Coffee | Crepe Pancake | Four Seasons Cafe

Dress for the trek:

  • Wear comfortable fitting clothes. Avoid tight-fitting clothes like jeans.
  • Put on layers (sweaters, jackets etc) as per seasonal requirement.
  • The weather can deteriorate any time at the top. So, it’s good to carry some woolens even during the summers.
  • Trekking shoes, or at least good sports shoes with grip is a must.
  • Besides, a cap or some kind of head gear is advisable.
  • Further, sunglasses are a good addition.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

Big question: Is there a toilet up there?

Answer: No; so, you know what to do, right! (The Forest Deptt. is not allowing any construction work at the top. However, somewhere below the peak, some trek operators have toilet facilities). In any case, believe me, toilet would not matter; everyone manages just well, out in the open.

Things to carry:

  • If you are not on a guided trek, of course you have to carry the tent, blanket, food etc.
  • A torch, a lighter and an umbrella would be handy
  • A walking/ trekking stick is optional (we didn’t need them)
  • Some dry snacks/ energy bar
  • Water bottle; not too many, just one to start with. Their weight can be annoying. In any case, there are small shops at 2-3 points on the way.
  • Above all, carry basic first-aid kit; sun-screen lotion, etc.
  • While you might want to carry a lot of things, control your urge. It will be better to keep yourself light rather than stuffed.

Things to explore in McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

By the way, after completing the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj, you better have some more time to explore that wonderful place. There are so many interesting places to see and things to do! Here are a few that I would suggest.

Natural sites:

  • Naddi view point; nice to walk around in the wilderness enjoying the views
  • If you love waterfalls, hike 1-2 kms to reach Bhagsu Waterfalls
  • Dharamkot, a sleepy village to leisurely hangout
  • Dharamshala Tea Gardens; enjoy the view, and shop some great tea
  • Dal lake, a cute little lake
  • If you love paragliding, you have to travel a bit more to reach Bir- Billing, the paragliding site, 75 kms away.

Cultural Experiences:

  • For a great spiritual experience, visit the Dalai Lama temple complex. Find out if he is around, and speaking at the temple one evening
  • Namgyal Monastery, a beautiful Buddhist temple
  • Shakti Peeth Chamunda Devi temple; 25 kms
  • Tashi Jong Monastery; 56 kms away
  • Baijnath Shiva temple; 60 kms away
  • Conveniently, the last three places are actually on the same route, i.e. towards Bir.

namgyal-monastery-mcleod-ganj

Heritage sites:

  • Church of St. John in the wilderness; established 1852
  • Norbulingka Institute: Tibetan school of art and craft; 15 kms away
  • Kangra fort; the largest fort in the Himalayas, and one of the oldest in India; 30 kms away
  • Musroor rock cut temple; an 8th century Hindu temple; 45 kms away.

musroor-rock-cut-temple

Other sites of interest:

  • The Tibet Museum; a great collection of Tibetan artefacts and culture
  • Dharamshala Cricket Stadium: A picturesque ground with the Himalayas in the backdrop
  • Kangra Art Museum; rich collection of traditional miniature paintings.

Concluding Notes

Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is really enjoyable with gentle slopes and great views of the Himalayas all around. It’s long enough to give that satisfaction of completing a proper trek. At the same time, i t’s not too long to deter non-regulars to undertake this trek. If you have never done trekking in mountains, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is a great option to start the journey.

I would suggest to plan your trek in the spring season- late March to April end, especially because of pleasant weather and the Rhododendron flowers. Do plan for a overnight camping at the top. Further, icing on the cake would be a full moon night. If possible, do it in a small group- your best buddies.

Besides, please don’t forget to have some extra time (at least two days) on hand to explore places in and around McLeod Ganj. Have a great time and thank me later!

Triund Trek: Here Is A Complete Guide For A Solo Experience

Photo of Pragya Singh

Triund trek - Triund is situated in Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh

Why should you go for triund trek - Triund is a green alpine meadow situated on top of a hill from where you have splendid views of majestic Dhauladhar mountains and of Kangra valley.

Triund is easily one of the most popular treks around Dharamshala. The best part about Triund trek is it can easily be done solo due to its well defined route. The relatively easy trail and with magnificent views of Dhauladhar ranges on one side and of Kangra valley on another side it becomes an easy introduction to the treks for beginners.

But, it doesn’t disappoint the experienced trekkers as well because the trekking does not end at Triund. If you are a trekking enthusiast then you can trek further to Lahesh cave and then to indrahar pass.

Trek to Lahesh cave is another 5-6 km from Triund top and takes upto 4-5 hrs as the elevation increases. Lahesh cave is at an altitude of 3500 mtrs.

You can even trek further to Indrahar pass from Lahesh cave which is at 8-9 km from caves and takes about 6-7 hrs. Indrahaar pass is at an altitude of 4300 mtrs so the terrain gets more elevated and ascent gets steep.

The nights at Triund are so beautiful with star lit sky and the all lit up Kangra valley that it surely won’t let you sleep.

The views of Dhauladhars are so close in Triund that it’s bound to leave you astounded!

Trek difficulty - Easy

Duration of trek - 2 days with camping at the top but can also be done as a day trek

Nearest road/rail head - There is well defined road/rail/air connectivity to Dharamshala and then to Mc-leod Ganj from where the trek starts. The nearest airport is Gaggal airport which is at 18km from Mcleod Ganj. There are flights to Gaggal airport from all major cities. You can easily get buses or shared cabs from airport to Mcleod Ganj.

Must Read: triund

The nearest railway connectivity is at Pathankot which is 85 kms away from Dharamshala and you can easily get buses and shared cabs to reach Dharamshala. It takes around 3-4 hrs to reach.

There are a lot of train options available from Delhi to Pathankot – Delhi-Pathankot express, Delhi-Jammu to name a few. Train journey from Delhi-Pathankot is of 10-11 hrs.

Those who are driving from Delhi will take 9-10hrs to reach Mcleod Ganj and hence should arrive a day prior to trekking day. There are bus options available from Delhi, one can easily get buses from Kashmiri gate ISBT/Paharganj to McleodGanj and will take 10-11 from bus to reach McleodGanj

Total trek distance - Trek to triund starts from Mcleod Ganj with total trek distance of 8-9 km one way but you can also ride till Gallu Devi temple (1st check-point of trek) in a shared cab/taxi/ auto but they charge more due to bad road condition. You can save 1- 2 hrs by taking a cab/auto ride till Gallu Devi temple and then starting the trek

Best time to trek - March till December excluding the monsoon months of June-July. Jan and February is a heavy snowfall month and hence should be avoided

Average temperature - Pleasant summers with clear blue skies and an average temperature of 25-30 deg during the day but nights get colder with an avg temp of 8-10 deg so it’s advised to carry few warmers for the trek. It’s good to come prepared for chilly evenings and a slight possibility of rain during the summers.

But, Winters are unpredictable so it is good to check the weather conditions prior to the start of the trek as there may be a possibility of closed road midway in trail due to heavy snowfall

If you reach early afternoon at top then you can easily rent a tent at 500-600 INR (do negotiate with them if quoted anything higher than this) with sleeping bags but the price increases if it’s crowded so try and reach early

Stay/camping options for overnight treks- To camp at Triund top, there are a lot of stay options available. There is a government guest house at the top which can be booked either in advance at forest department office in Dharamshala or can be booked at the triund top subject to availability. Reserve forest dept. rest house for Triund Hill stay at the Forest Complex near and opposite to General Post Office Dharamsala and Police Station (If you plan to stay up in Triund for one or two days, you can reserve room for500 INR or 9 USD in forest rest house triund, from Divisional Forest Officer at this phone number 01892-224887 and email enquiry at [email protected] but prefer to call or direct visit).

There are options to camp as well, as the tea/maggi shops at the top rent out the tents, so no need to carry tent if you want to make your backpack light. It would cost you 500-600 INR for a tent with sleeping bag, however if you reach late in evening they might increase the price so advised to reach in early afternoon

Food availability on the trail - A lot of small tea shops are there on the trail and in the last 2-3km stretch you’ll come across 2 cafes – magic view café and Best view café

Ending point of the trek - Trek ends at Triund hill top but those who want to trek further can go further till Lahesh cave and then to Indrahar pass.

After the last 2 checkpoint (Magic view café and Best view café) and trek of 1-2 kms, you will see a vast empty green meadow surrounded with Dhauladhar mountains , some tea shops and a govt guest house and you know that you have reached the Triund top

Return route from end point - From the Triund top you can take the same trail back to Gallu Devi temple and from there to town of Mcleod Ganj. Since it is a well defined trail and with some cafes enroute you can easily trek back to the town.

Day to Day description of the trek -

Day 1: Trek from McleodGanj to Triund

Altitude: Triund top is at an altitude of 2800 metres

Time taken: 6-7 hrs if you start trekking from Mcleod Ganj. However, you can also take a ride till Gallu Devi Temple and then start the trek which will save you 1-2 hrs.

Time taken till 1st check point Gallu Devi temple is about 1-1.5 hrs and from Gallu Devi temple to the next check point Magic view café and best view café point, it takes about 2-3 hrs. The last stretch is of 1-1.5 hrs to triund top from magic view café.

Trek gradient: the start of the trail is simple as it is a plain road of stones and a flat walk but the last 1 hr stretch is a steep ascent, has tiring curves and tests the stamina.

Terrain type: Terrain starts with rhododendron oaks on side and leads into the forest. The trail takes you through the beautiful mixed forest of oak, deodar and rhododendron trees and gradually opens up with views of Dhauladhars. The last 3-4 km is a trail with splendid views of Dhauladhars and Kangra valley.

Trail description: the 1st check-point of the trek is Gallu Devi Temple which is a walk of 1-1.5 hrs from mcleodganj, the trail till here is a plain walk and takes you through the deodar forests and after this point the Dhauladhars comes into the view.

The next checkpoint are the two cafes - magic view café and best view café which comes after 2-3 hrs of walk from Galu devi temple. As the name suggests it sure does offer the astounding views of Dhauladhars and Kangra valley. The trail till here is also simple with elevation at certain points.

After these two cafes the ascent gets steep with tiring curves and the last 1-2 km is the steepest and consumes the most energy and time.

Landmarks on the way: Gallu Devi Temple to start the trail then after 5-6 km onto the trail you’ll come across 2 cafes – Magic view and best view cafe

Water sources: it is advised to carry your own water bottle and re-fill it at the Gallu Devi check point; alternatively water bottle can also be bought at the cafes in the trail but you need to keep yourself hydrated till you reach the café so suggested to carry your own also.

There is no option of normal or filtered or stream water on the trail so apart from your own water bottle the only option is to purchase the bottled water at the tea shops enroute.

So, go solo and get closer to the mountains :)

Triund Trek – 8 Things to must Know before you kick start

' data-src=

Triund Trek is considered a beginner’s friendly trek amidst mountains.

But, are you scared of height because it is situated at almost 9,350 ft above sea level?

You don’t need to ?:

Because to conquer your fears, you have to start from somewhere, and the foothills of Dhauladhar are the best place to make a start.

Some Insights before we Start

Let me tell you something.

About two years ago, I did Triund Trek and was quite afraid that height might play a role for a step-back and created doubt whether I would be able to do it without giving up.

With the trust of the guide, I gathered the confidence that someone was here to motivate and help me keep pushing my limits. Hence, I took the courage that it can be done as others do.

It took 5-6 hrs to reach Triund then.

Half way of Triund Trek

After 2 years, I returned to McLeod Ganj with much more stamina and confidence because of Solo Travelling and the many adventurous activities that took place in between those 2 years.

Started for Triund Trek as a Solo Trekker, meet people in between –

People – Are you from here?

Me – No, but why?

People – because you are doing it so smoothly without any struggle on your face.

Me – Yeah, it’s all because I am fond of trekking. My stamina and confidence have been increased over the past few years, and Solo is my strength.

And reached Triund within 3 hrs and guided people too. Gone Solo to Triund and came down making a lot of friends. (One accompanied while coming down).

Triund Trek Pictures from My last visit

These are my Triund Trek pictures from my last visit here. If I compare from then to now things have changed like –

  • Opening of more shops ( Two more are in process in between if you take the trek route from Bhagsu point ).
  • More commercialized
  • Increase in number of trekkers
  • More litter in the surroundings ( Most Importantly )

Trek Trek - 2 years back

I used to take breaks every 10 min.

Sunrise from Triund

It was a kind of snow trek during winters.

Consider the list of these winter essentials .

Let’s get to the present now – things to know wait wait wait…….. before starting for Triund Trek, take a day to explore Upper Bhagsu , Yes you will really enjoy this part.

Now, shall we start? –

1. Triund Trek Route

There are two routes to start Triund Trek. They are –

MacLeod Ganj view from the top

  • Triund Trek from Bhagsu Nag Waterfall (Shiva Café)
  • Triund Trek from Dharamkot

The Bhagsu Route

Shiva Cafe

The Bhagsu route passes from Shiva Café and goes by Jungle and steep climb every time.

By every time, I mean after a few steps. This route is fairly difficult compared to the other one and is usually preferred by a bit experienced trekkers and locals.

The Trek route is 6-7 km but steep, taking you straight to the height.

Also , follow me on Instagram for updates and queries.

Dharamkot Route

Dharamkot route for Triund Trek

Triund Trek from the Dharamkot route is easier because of the proper walkable steps been made.

This Trek route is a bit longer, specifically 9-10 km, and goes in a circle and can easily be done by children and adults as I encountered while coming down.

I started from the first route ( Bhagsu Nag ) and came down from the second route ( Dharamkot ).

Note – If you ask me, an easier and hustle-free route would be to start from the second route ( Dharamkot ) and come down from the first route ( Bhagsu Nag ).

2. Things to take for Triund Trek

I am pinpointing three things to focus on–

It would help if you carried a light backpack with essential items inside. Backpack with a max. Weight of 2-3 kg or as low as possible.

B. Water Bottle

At least 2 bottles if you don’t want to buy in between because the rate is Rs.40 for a bottle of water and increases by +10 on Triund, i: e Rs.50

C. Energy Bars

The majority don’t prefer energy bars here, but I do.

2-3 packets of Bar one or Snickers would do because a point will come where your throat demands something to swallow, and a heavy item will definitely not work.

The cost of a Maggi on Triund varies from Rs.50 – Rs.70, and we will be willing to pay after the hard struggle and because of fewer varieties. So, That’s fair enough.

Recharge or carry Power bank – Recharge your phone before or carry a power bank along with you.

Q. What’s the status of Mobile signals on Triund?

A. Yes, a full network is available during the trek and upon reaching Triund.

3. Triund Weather

The weather, which seems clear at the start of a Trek suddenly becomes dark upon reaching.

Welcome, you are in the mountains.

Must carry an umbrella or a raincoat because conditions can change at any time.

Trek to Triund at the monsoon time is a big “NO.” One shouldn’t take deadly risks.

If the weather permits, you can also Trek to the snowline upon reaching Triund, about another 2-3hrs.

Also Read , Kalpa Trip – A Guide to the Heritage Village of Kinnaur Valley

4. Triund Temperature

Triund Temperature

The temperature on the foot of the Dhauladhar range mainly remains cool and pleasing.

A.Temperature in Summers

Triund Trek is preferable in summers to escape from hot and humid city life (May -July). It varies from 15-20 degrees.

B.Temperature in winters

In winter, the weather would be very harsh, and it becomes a snow trek too (Dec – Jan). The temperature varies from (-)5-5 degrees.

5. Camping facilities at Triund

You can camp?️ At the foothills of mighty Dhauladhar, the price range for camping would be around Rs 500-Rs 600 for a night.

If you are doing it for the first time, you must camp to feel the vibe under the stars or start early and come down before sunset.

Trekking and camping can be done further too at snowline and Indrahar pass , but I would suggest Indrahar pass to more experienced trekkers than beginners.

Major Update – Camping at Triund has been closed for now because of Illegal structures and a lot of waste material.

I will update further when it re-opens. But you can go on a day hike.

6. Don’t litter the surroundings

Don't litter surroundings

The most important thing to keep in mind is our responsibility to make our surroundings neat and clean.

Don’t throw cans, chips packets, etc., on the ground if you can’t find any dustbins, instead keep it in the bag and throw it in the dustbin when you come down.

Note – Travel Responsibly.
