  • UK Visitor Visa Requirements Overview

The UK Visitor Visa is also often known as the UK Tourist Visa or the Standard Visitor Visa. It allows foreign nationals, such as travellers from Turkey, to visit the UK as tourists for vacations, study, business, and other activities that are permitted for a short period of up to 6 months.

Before a Turkish individual applies, it is recommended to check that a visit visa is required for the trip. Traditionally, Turkish individuals will need a visitor visa to apply; however, there may be some situations in which they do not, or in cases where a visitor visa is not required. Therefore, it is best to check that this visa applies to each situation.

To be able to obtain a visitor visa, it is important to meet all of the eligibility requirements. This means that the applicant must genuinely intend on leaving the UK after their stay has ended, and the applicant must have enough finances to cover the duration of their stay in the UK as well.

Many types of UK Visitor Visa cater to a range of purposes. This includes:

  • Business Visitor Visa
  • Family Visitor Visa
  • General Visitor Visa
  • Marriage Visitor Visa
  • Chinese Tour Group
  • Permitted Paid Engagement Visa

To make a UK Visitor Visa successfully, applicants need to meet the following general eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must have genuine intent to depart for the UK at the end of their visit to the UK.
  • The applicant must have sufficient funds to support themselves while in the UK.
  • The applicant must be able to fund their journey.
  • The applicant cannot live in the UK by making repeated successive visits using a Visitor Visa.

Applicants also need to consider that they will have to meet additional requirements to be eligible if they are travelling to the UK to complete a placement, study, take an exam, or as an academic, as a senior doctor or dentist, or for medical treatment.

Genuine Intention To Leave The UK

The UK Home Office will assess the applicant’s genuine intentions to visit; this includes the reasons for visiting the UK, the applicant’s immigration history, as well as the number and duration of the previous visits. The personal and economic ties to the applicant’s home country as well as some other factors.

Sufficient Support Funds

The Home Office doesn’t specify a specific amount of money that a visitor to the UK must have. The Home Office will also assess the likely cost of the stay, including food, travel, and accommodation, and they will compare this to the funds that the applicant has available.

They will also consider the existing financial commitments to determine if you are likely to have sufficient funds for these financial commitments and for the applicant to stay in the UK.

Intent Not To Live In The UK

The Home Office will also want to be assured that applicants are not using the Visitor Visa route as a way of living in the UK by making repeated visits. The Home Office will check over the applicant’s travel history, the length of the intended stay, as well as the number of visits to the UK over the past 12 months, including the length of stay in each instance.

The Home Office will also be considering the time since the applicant’s last visit and whether the applicant has spent more time in the UK recently than in their own country.

The documents required will depend on the reasons for coming to the UK. Therefore, the applicants may be asked to provide the following documents:

  • The applicant’s dates of travel to and from the UK
  • The applicant’s address is in the UK
  • A breakdown of the estimated cost of the visit
  • The applicant’s home address
  • How long has the applicant lived at their current address
  • The name and date of birth of the applicant’s birth parents
  • The applicant’s annual income
  • Details regarding any civil, criminal, or immigration-based offences
  • The applicant’s travel history from the previous 10 years
  • The applicant’s employer’s telephone number and address
  • The name, date of birth, and passport number of the applicant’s partner
  • The details of family members in the UK (if visiting them)
  • Tuberculosis test certificate if the applicant intends on visiting for over 6 months

If the visitor is paying for themselves for this trip, they will need to submit certain documents that prove they can afford the trip. This includes bank statements and payslips.

Should someone else be paying for this visit, such as the fees for flights or accommodation, then this individual will need to prove they can afford the visitor’s trip fees on top of their fees.

For example, in the event the visitor is visiting family, the family will be covering the travel costs; they will need to prove they can afford the travel costs of the applicant on top of their fees such as mortgage, rent, utilities, and so forth.

To show this, the applicant or person providing the finances will need to submit the following:

  • An estimate of the total cost of the trip: This estimate will need to be as accurate as possible
  • Proof of income and where the individual works, such as an employment contract or payslips
  • Proof that the applicant or financial provider has enough money to pay for the visitor’s stay, such as bank statements from the last few months

There are no specific financial quantities to meet for this visa. However, it is necessary that the applicant can meet the amount they anticipate the trip will cost.

The fees for the UK Visitor Visa will depend on the type of Visitor Visa that the applicant is applying for.

  • An applicant applying for a Standard Visitor Visa for a 6-month stay will be required to pay £115.
  • An applicant applying for a Standard Visitor Visa for medical reasons for an 11-month stay will need to pay £200.
  • An applicant applying for a Standard Visitor Visa for Academics for a 12-month stay will need to pay £200.
  • An applicant applying for a 2-year long-term Standard Visitor Visa with 6 months per visit will need to pay £400.
  • An applicant applying for a 5-year long-term Standard Visitor Visa with 6 months per visit will need to pay £771.
  • An applicant applying for a 10-year long-term Standard Visitor Visa with 6 months per visit will need to pay £963.

For Turkish individuals to apply for a UK Visitor Visa they will need to complete several steps. These steps are as follows:

  • The applicant should first check if they need to have a Visitor Visa for their trip before they apply. (Keep in mind that most Turkish individuals will need to apply for a Visitor Visa to enter the UK, but there may be some exceptions depending on personal circumstances.)
  • The applicant should then complete and submit a Visitor Visa application on the UK online Home Office website. Be aware that if an applicant and their family are travelling to the UK, each family member will require their application and their own fee.
  • Once the application is completed, the applicant will need to pay the relevant application fee.
  • Once the appointment is booked, the applicant needs to attend their appointment at their local Visa Application Centre and provide any documents that the Home Office requires alongside the application here. At this appointment, the applicant will also provide their biometrics by having their photograph taken and fingerprints scanned.
  • After this, the applicant must simply await a decision on their Visitor Visa application. They should receive a decision on their application within 3 weeks. However, it can take longer in some cases.

Visitor Visas in the UK are useful for many different purposes, allowing travel to the UK for vacation, medical stays, and academics. With the different periods you can apply to the UK for, they are diverse. However, you will need to ensure that you meet the application requirements for this visa.

UK Visas and Requirements for Turkish Citizens

Do Turkish citizens need a visa for the UK?

As a Turkish citizen, you will need a visa if you plan to visit, work, establish a business, study, or join family members in the UK. Turkish nationals have a wide range of UK visas available, including temporary work visas and long-term work visas , family visas , and business visas . Unfortunately, the ‘Turkish Worker visa’ and the ‘Turkish Businessperson visa’ are now closed to new applicants. However, existing visa holders can still apply for an ECAA visa extension . In this article, we will outline some of the most popular UK visas for Turkish citizens, including the eligibility requirements and the UK visa fees for Turkish citizens.

UK short-term visas for Turkish citizens

Short-term UK visas enable Turkish citizens to come to the UK to visit, work, or study. Some of the many short-term visas for Turkish citizens include the:

Standard visitor visa

  • Overseas Domestic Worker visa
  • Study English on the UK visa
  • Seasonal Worker visa
  • Government Authorised Exchange visa
  • Creative Worker visa
  • Religious Worker visa
  • Charity Worker visa , and the
  • International Agreement visa

The Standard visitor visa is the most commonly used short-term visa for Turkish citizens. Not everyone requires a visitor visa for the UK. Therefore, it is important to check online before applying 1 . As a Standard visitor visa holder from Turkey, you will be able to spend up to 6 months in the UK for any of the following reasons:

  • for tourism
  • to visit family or friends
  • to volunteer
  • to attend a meeting or interview
  • to take part in a school exchange programme
  • to do a recreational course
  • to study, do a placement, or take an exam
  • as an academic, senior doctor, or dentist
  • ·for private medical treatment

To be eligible for a Standard visitor visa as a Turkish national (i.e., UK tourist visa for Turkish citizens), you must:

  • intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • be able to support yourself and your dependants while in the UK
  • be able to pay for your return or onward journey
  • not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits
  • not make the UK your main home

Standard visitor visas cost £115. However, the fee is higher at £200 for those coming for medical reasons or as an academic. The application process can be completed on the Home Office website 2 .

UK work visas for Turkish citizens (long-term)

Several long-term UK work visas schemes are open to Turkish nationals, including the following:

  • UK Skilled Worker visa
  • Health and Care Worker visa
  • Scale-up visa
  • Global Talent visa
  • High Potential Individual visa (HPI), and
  • UK Global Mobility visa scheme (Global Business Mobility)

Skilled Worker visa

By far, the most popular of all work visas is the UK Skilled Worker visa. The Skilled Worker visa is intended for overseas nationals with the skills and experience to carry out an eligible role in the UK. Skilled Worker visa holders can stay for up to 5 years, at which point it is possible to apply to permanently settle in the UK (indefinite leave to remain – ILR). Dependant family members can also join Skilled Worker visa holders and gain UK ILR at the same time.

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa as a Turkish national, you must:

  • Have an offer of a job from an approved sponsoring employer in an eligible role
  • Meet the minimum salary requirements (£25,600 per year, £10.10 per hour, or the ‘going rate’ for your job).
  • Meet the English language requirements

Your employer must have a sponsor licence granted by the UK’s Home Office. This will allow them to issue you with a Certificate of Sponsorship ( UK CoS ) which you must have before you apply for your visa.

To apply for a Skilled Worker visa, you will need to complete the online application form 3 , pay the application fee and healthcare surcharge , and provide any documents requested by the Home Office. In addition, you will need to book and attend a meeting at your nearest UKVCAS office to have your identity checked, your fingerprints scanned, and your photo taken (your biometrics).

UK family visas for Turkish Citizens

The Home Office offers a number of UK family visas for Turkish citizens, including the:

  • Partner/ spouse visa
  • Parent visa
  • Child visa , and
  • Adult dependant relative visa

Spouse/Partner visa

Under the family visa scheme, the UK spouse or partner visa enables a Turkish national to travel to and live with their UK-based partner. With a partner visa, you will be able to stay for up to 2 years and 9 months initially. You can then further extend for another 2 years and 6 months. After 5 continuous years in the UK, it is possible to apply for ILR.

To qualify for a spouse visa, you must be married to, in a civil partnership, or have been living for 2 years with a British citizen or a person who has settled in the UK. Applicants must also meet the minimum income requirement of £29,000 per year. This can be met through the joint income of both partners, in addition to pensions, savings, investments, and non-employment income (e.g., rental property income).

UK business visas for Turkish Citizens

And finally, the Home Office offers two UK business visas to Turkish citizens:

  • Innovator visa

Start-up visa

The Start-up visa is aimed at overseas entrepreneurs who wish to come to the UK to establish an innovative business here. Unlike the innovator visa, which is for experienced businesspeople, the start-up visa does not require applicants to have investment funds.

As a start-up visa holder, you can stay for up to 2 years to set up your business, at which point you can switch to an innovator visa or another type of visa. You can also bring your dependant family members to the UK to live with you.

To qualify for a start-up visa, you must have a business idea that is endorsed by an endorsing body in the UK as being new, innovative, and viable. You must also be 18 years or over, meet the English language requirements, and have sufficient savings to support yourself while setting up your business.

To apply for a start-up visa, you must complete the online application form, pay the application fee (£378) and healthcare surcharge, and provide any documents required (including your letter of endorsement). You will also need to arrange a biometric appointment at your nearest UKVCAS office.

What if your visa application is refused?

If applying for a UK visa from Turkey, your application may be refused by the Home Office if:

  • You do not meet the UK visa requirements for Turkish citizens
  • You do not provide the necessary information and documents
  • The information on your application is incorrect
  • You are considered not to be of “ good character ” – i.e. if you have breached the immigration rules in the past or criminality

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to submit a fresh application, request an administrative review , visa appeal , or ask for a judicial review . In some situations, especially if you do not meet the eligibility criteria, it may be preferable to apply for a different type of visa.

Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

Minimum passport validity to enter Turkey as a tourist

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

TURKEY E-VISA

Turkey e-Visa - Step-by-step guide

Turkey introduced its e-Visa portal in 2013 to help visitors obtain visas from the comfort of their homes. Today, 51 countries are eligible for Turkey e-Visa .

Of these 51 countries, 30 nationalities can apply for e-Visa with just their passports. And 21 nationalities can apply for an e-Visa only if holding a US visa , UK visa , Schengen visa or Ireland visa or a residence permit from any of those countries.

E-visa approval is immediate and it only takes 5 minutes to obtain the e-Visa.

Validity of Turkey e-Visa

The validity of the Turkey e-Visa is 180 days from the “arrival date” that you’ve selected in your e-Visa application.

E-Visas are either single-entry or multiple-entry depending on your passport. You must enter Turkey within the validity of your e-Visa.

How long can you stay in Turkey on e-Visa

Depending on your passport, you can either stay up to 30 days or 90 days on an e-Visa. Your total stay cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

E-Visa application process

Turkey e-Visa approval is immediate so there is no processing time. The application is quite simple, so it only takes about 10 minutes. You can pay the fee with a credit/debit card.

You will need the following documents.

  • Original passport
  • A valid visa from the US, UK, Ireland or Schengen (for those that require a supporting document)
  • A credit or debit card for visa fee payment

Photo requirements

A photo is not required for the Turkey e-Visa application

The e-Visa fee varies from “no fee” to $77 USD depending on the passport. Below is the table for the current Turkey e-Visa fee.

There is no processing time for the Turkey e-visa as the approval is immediate. You can then save it as a PDF on your phone or print it to carry with you when you travel.

Do UK Citizens Need a Visa for Turkey?

Turkish visa from Uk

British citizens traveling to Turkey for tourist or business purposes do not need a visa for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, if they plan to stay longer or for purposes such as work or study, they may need to apply for a visa or other relevant permits. There are ways to extend your stay in Turkey beyond the initial 90 days, which will also be discussed in this Article.

Documents Needed for UK Citizens Traveling to Turkey from the UK

UK citizens who are traveling to Turkey are required to have a valid British passport with more than 150 days left before its expiry on their expected date of arrival. It is important to note that failure to meet this requirement may result in being refused entry at the border. In addition, the passport should have free blank pages for entry stamps from an immigration officer upon arrival. If the stay is for more than 90 days, a valid visa for Turkey is also required.
