Everything You Need to Know About the Aquafari Curaçao Tour

When researching things to do in Curaçao for my solo trip back in 2015, I knew I wanted to do something adventurous. The island of Curaçao is well known for water sports and since I find myself to be boring safe most of the time, I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and take a new type of underwater activity. After hours of research on sites like Instagram and TripAdvisor , I discovered the Aquafari Curaçao.

If you’re planning a solo, family, or group trip to Curaçao and looking for an activity that will bring a lifetime of memories, here’s a guide to everything you need to know about visiting the Curaçao Aquafari including the location, prices, safety information, things to know before booking, and my overall experience.

What is the Aquafari Curaçao

Curaçao’s underwater safari is a fun way for non-scuba divers to experience a colorful coral reef and a variety of beautiful fish in the underwater paradise of the Caribbean. It is one of the top things to do in Curaçao while on a cruise, making it the perfect family activity, and one of seven underwater tours in the entire world that uses an underwater scooter.

Aquafari Curacao Location

The Aquafari meeting point is at Boka Sami Beach, a popular scuba dive and snorkel site in Curaçao. I used the taxi provided by my hotel, but the company offers pickup service from the cruise port or your hotel if needed.

You can also drive to the location if you used a rental car. When I took my solo trip to Curaçao, the meet-up was at Pirate Bay so the photos in this guide would be different.

Aquafari Curaçao Cost

The Aquafari Curacao price is $139 and includes access to the submersible scooter, access to Pirate Bay Beach, and a non-alcoholic drink while we waited for them to set up. At the time of my trip, I paid an additional $10, for the photo package and they were sent via WeTransfer a few days later.

When booking online through their official website, there are different tiers of the photo package whether you’re solo or in a group and there is also an option to include lunch.

How to Book the Aquafari Curaçao

The easiest way to book the Curacao Aquafari is online. You can make reservations here or reserve a spot and pay later on travel booking sites Viator .

On their official site, a credit or debit card is needed. On Viator , you can pay with your debit, credit card, or Paypal. Cancellation with a full refund is guaranteed up to 24 hours in advance.

Aquafari Safety

Safety is a top priority at Aquafari and lockers are available to secure your personal belongings. The total time under the water for me was about an hour and submersion was at 9 ft. & 21 ft.

When I arrived at the meeting point, I shared my confirmation information, was greeted by our instructors who are professional divers, placed my belongings in my locker, and waited on the beach for others to arrive.

Before actually getting in the water and on my personal water scooter, we were given a full briefing which included an overview of the tour, directions for getting in and out of the submersible scooter, and instructions on communicating with each other underwater.

Important Things to Know Before Booking the Aquafari Tour in Curaçao

Here are some restrictions and other important things to know before booking the Aquafari tour in Curaçao:

• The Aquafari tour has a maximum of 8 travelers
• Not wheelchair accessible
• The minimum age requirement is 10 years old
• The minimum height requirement is 4 ft
• Maximum weight limit of 275 lbs (125 kg).
• The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers, travelers with heart conditions, people suffering from a recent neck or back injury, heart conditions, respiratory ailments, epilepsy, claustrophobia, or diabetes (a doctor’s consent letter is required to be allowed on the excursion if any of these restrictions apply to you)
• Participation is denied if you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs or if your departure flight is within 18 hours of your Aquafari trip.
• A different date or a full refund is given if weather conditions are poor.

What to Bring

Below is a list of items you should bring when going on the Aquafari tour:

• Bathing Suit  – Since this is a water activity, a swimsuit is required. You can wear a one-piece, rashguard, or two-piece.
• Water shoes  – Water shoes aren’t necessary, but you can buy some water shoes with non-slip soles.
• Hair tie  – If you have long hair, bring a hair tie and put it up in a bun to keep your hair out of your face.
• Underwater Camera  – If you don’t purchase the photo package or want some photo and video footage on your own.
• Something to carry wet clothes  – Bring along a plastic bag to put your wet clothes in when you’re done.
• Waterproof phone pouch  – Don’t have enough money for a waterproof camera, get a waterproof phone pouch. Check restrictions on how far underwater you can go before using.

Operating the Submersible Scooter

So how does one breathe while operating an underwater scuba scooter? The Aquafari scooter features a bell-shaped glass container that supplies enough oxygen for the entire duration of the trip from an oxygen tank attached to the front of the scooter.

The illustration given during our overview of how we’ll be able to breathe was by placing a full cup of water into a bowl of water where there is always air at the top. The logic and actually seeing it made sense, but I was still nervous about getting in.

To operate the yellow underwater vehicles, there are buttons for moving up, down, left, and right. While underwater, a certified aquafari diver directed us with hand signals.

Do you need Swimming or Scuba Diving Experience for Aquafari?

You do NOT need to know how to swim to do this excursion, but knowing how to swim does help. I am not a strong swimmer.

Prior to this trip, I NEVER swam in the ocean and don’t know how to tread water, but I can float. In fact, I underestimated the depth of the crystal clear waters, so I fell in when going down the pier stairs to get to the scuba scooter.

I immediately turned around to swim on my back and one of the guides was close to assist just in case I needed help. Once I got on the scooter, I felt completely fine.

Aquafari Curacao Review

My overall experience with Aquafari Curacao was great. I have never had any experience with the underwater world before this trip and I had so much fun. I also felt safe.

Seeing the tropical fish, turtles, and other deep-sea creatures all around me was AMAZING and I’m happy I came out of my comfort zone for this experience.

My favorite part was feeding schools of fish. I thought I’d feel their fins on my hands and toes, but they just swam around me. Here are some of my favorite photos from the tour.

If you ever take a trip to Curaçao via cruise ship or for an extended stay and want to experience underwater life up close, the Curaçao Aquafari underwater adventure is a MUST. It is definitely on my list of special moments of one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

Transportation

There is plenty of parking at Aquafari so you can drive to Aquafari with your own transportation just fine. If you do not have transportation then you can arrange for a Hotel Pickup right at the time of booking.

What does the excursion with Aquafari look like

It all looks exciting, such an Aquafari, but how does it actually work? A big plus of the Aquafari is that everything is explained very calmly and clearly beforehand, and also the guidance during the tour is focused on giving you the best possible experience. Per group of up to 8 scooters , a minimum of 2 supervisors will accompany them into the sea. The scooter, equipped with air bottle, will be brought into the sea for you. So even this is already relaxed: you don’t have to drag the scooter yourself. By yourself, you then have to swim a few meters to the scooter. To get “into” the scooter, you have to submerge your head under water for a moment to get into the glass sphere, but it is already filled with air from the air bottle, so you can then immediately breathe normally again. Then it’s time to really start the tour. Slowly, the guides will take you down to a depth of up to 7 meters. The guides show you the way to the most beautiful spots, signal you when there is a beautiful fish or other animal nearby, and they constantly keep an eye on you to make sure everything is still relaxed. Through hand gestures explained during instruction, you can indicate when you need help.

An Aquafari is suitable for almost everyone: Participants are at least 10 years old, have a height of at least 1.20 meters, are max. 125 kg and not pregnant. Aquafari is not suitable for people with heart problems, recent neck or back injury, breathing problems (asthma), epilepsy, claustrophobia or diabetes. If the crew finds that you are too much under the influence of drink or drugs you may be refused entry without refund of any payments already made.

For an additional cost, you can have beautiful pictures taken with a professional camera (underwater), but it is also allowed to take your own camera into the sea.

Ride a Scuba Scooter in Curacao: Aquafari

Aquafari is an underwater adventure in Curacao, where you get to ride on an underwater scuba scooter. Curacao is one of only seven places in the world where you can have this experience, making this is a bucket list experience you have to try while on your Caribbean vacation! This underwater scuba scooter allows you to experience the underwater world without gear and any prior knowledge of scuba diving. But don’t worry, you will be accompanied by a certified diver.

How Does a Scuba Scooter Work?

The Aquafari scuba scooters are equipped with bell-shaped glass helmets that are supplied with oxygen from a scuba-dive tank. And these tanks supply enough oxygen for the entire duration of the trip.  These oxygen-filled helmets allow you to breathe normally underwater. It might not seem possible, but trust me, this is legit! Think about putting a cup underwater, how there is still air trapped inside. This is essentially the same concept.   

The Aquafari Scuba Scooter Experience

I arrived at Pirate Bay Curacao Beach Club and Restaurant, where Aquafari is located. Before getting in the water, there is a training video. The training video quickly debriefs you on everything you need to know about using the scuba scooters. This includes how to operate the scooters, hand symbols to communicate underwater and where the tour would take you. We lathered on sunscreen, changed into our swimsuits, and put our belongings in our assigned lockers.

In order to access your scuba scooter, you must swim out to reach them. However, if you are not a strong swimmer, the divers will bring the scooter to the shore for beach access.

Once you are out by the scooters, the diver will signal when it is time to access your scooter. Getting into the scooter is very easy, all you have to do is swim under the helmet and sit down on the seat.

Make sure to clear your ears anytime you feel the pressure. This can be done by plugging your nose and blowing or by yawning. Once your ears are pressurized, the diver will slowly lower your scuba scooter further underwater. The divers will lower your scooter twice until you are 20 feet deep. Remember not to panic! While a scuba scooter is a unique experience, you are completely safe. The diving instructors will be around to guide you if you need any assistance. But if you do start to panic, just get out of the scooter and swim to the surface. At 20 feet deep, you are safe to do so.

After I got my ears adjusted and comfortable being 20 feet deep in the Caribbean, the experience was incredible! The Aquafari scuba scooter experience lasted for 1 hour. During this 1 hour experience, we were able to go past various reefs and see tons of fish. It was interesting to see people above you in some areas snorkeling and below you scuba diving. Curacao is truly a wonderful place to experience the underwater world.

What to Bring

Swimsuit: There is no wetsuit needed for this excursion. I opted to wear a fuller coverage swimsuit so I wouldn’t have to worry about adjusting it while on the scuba scooter. 

Towel: Make sure to bring a towel! I suggest packing a quick-dry towel with you. 

Sunscreen: Even though you’re underwater, you may still get burnt! Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen with you.

Enjoy a relaxing cruise on your very own personal catamaran! This guided catamaran tour takes you on a scenic trip along the shore from Boka Samí to Kokomo Beach on our easy to maneuver eco-friendly AquaCats, with a chance to cool off during a quick but breathtaking snorkeling stop on the way!

You’ll spend 45 min. at Kokomo Beach, where you can purchase refreshing tropical cocktails or savory snacks at the Snack Bar, take a dip in the crystal clear waters and even take pictures on Kokomo’s famous Water Swing!

A Water Lover’s Utopia

Curaçao is known as one of the best shore-diving locations in the world. Start your day exploring the beauty of the island's marine life.

Kas di Piskado in Willemstad offers a rustic experience and some of the freshest seafood on the island with local fishermen directly bringing their catches to the restaurant.

The Curaçao Sea Aquarium was developed right on the waterfront, with a unique open-water system that continuously pumps water into the aquaria. Snorkel or scuba dive with fish and sea turtles, see a dolphin show, or take it all in from the comfort of the underwater observatory boat! Not feeling it? Try the Kura Hulanda Museum or the Maritime Museum instead!

Caracas Baai is a spectacular bay off of Jan Thiel at Willemstad’s southeast end. Here you’ll find plenty of casual dining options with a sea view – the perfect end to your first day on the island!

Book a kayak tour to explore the island's coastal line and enjoy the calm, turquoise water.

Famous for the tugboat that accidentally sunk years ago and rests at just 5 meters (17 ft.), Tugboat is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Curaçao. After that, treat yourself to a drink at the beach bar.

Go turtle-spotting at Playa Piskado/Playa Grandi and stop at Playa Porto Mari, known for its unique double reef.

Head back towards Caracas Baai for lunch in one of Curaçao’s top restaurants. And if you still have your snorkeling gear, you can explore the beach's underwater park.

Jan Thiel Beach, one of the island’s most popular beaches, is far more than just the beach. There are also plenty of activities, including flyboarding, shopping, watersports, and chartered boat tours.

As the sun sets and the night time festivities begin, you’ll find yourself in the perfect setting to enjoy the sundown as you head to Willemstad.

Start the day by trying something new. Take a windsurfing class in the early morning when the wind is still calmer.

Try a stand-up paddleboard session at designated beaches along both the east and west coasts.

Curacçao is one of the few locations in the world offering Aquafari, an eco-friendly way to explore the island's marine life without any diving experience required. A briefing before you get in the water and certified Aquafari diver make sure it's a fun, safe experience you will not forget.

You may not be in Willemstad anymore, but the west has plenty of dining options, many with beautiful views near the coast. Taste authentic local flavors at one of the historic landhuizen, many of which also offer information about Curaçao’s past.

Visit Williwood to take a picture of Curaçao's very own version of the Hollywood sign and visit Sint Willibrordus church, which dates back to 1888.

Don't miss Shete Boka National Park, an area with more than 10 beautiful Boka's (boka means inlet) where three species of turtles nest. Shete Boka stands for "seven inlets". 

Another must-see is Kas di Pal'I Maishi - a traditional adobe house with a latched roof built about 130 years ago. It illustrates the way the Afro-Curaçaoan rural population of Curaçao lived till about 1950.

Dive easily under the sea on your personal water scooter accompanied by a certified Aquafari diver. See a variety of beautiful fish and other deep-sea creatures as they swim on the bottom, roll on the surface or hover anywhere between the colorful coral reef in the ocean. The Aquafari scooter is easy to master and too much fun not to try.

Every day this tour begins at either 10:00, 12:00, or 14:00 at Piscadera, Pirate Bay. Aquafari is a fun way for non-scuba divers to experience the underwater world and experience the great sensation of breathing underwater. It’s also fun to cruise around with friends on amusing yellow underwater vehicles. Suitable for young and old. This eco-friendly underwater scooter features a bell-shaped glass container that is supplied with oxygen from a scuba-dive tank, which is attached to the front of the scooter. This tank supplies enough oxygen for the entire duration of the trip.

A wise crab named Sebastian, from ‘The Little Mermaid’ movie- once said “Up on the shore they work all day, out in the sun they slave away,” and, “while we devotin’ full time to floatin’ under the sea!”

There is a minimum height requirement is 4ft (1,2meter) and maximum weight limit of 275lbs (125 kg). This excursion is not suitable for women during pregnancy and people suffering from a recent neck or back injury, heart conditions, respiratory ailments, epilepsy, claustrophobia or diabetes. Moreover, if your departure flight is within 18 hours of your Aquafari trip.

Sea TREK Helmet Diving is popular water activity on various destinations and now also in Curaçao! Here is your chance to have your very own underwater experience that allows you to walk underwater reaching a depth of 7 meters.

Walking underwater for about 35 minutes together with an experienced dive instructor, you will encounter spectacular sea life in their natural environment with a specially designed helmet! Sea TREK is the ultimate underwater experience for non-swimmers and without any scuba gear. It is all about enjoying sea life by walking and breathing underwater.
