Rajasthan has my heart but Udaipur truly has my soul.

It’s straight from the pages of a bohemian romantic fairy tale and you will feel like royalty as you wander around the breathtaking Lake Pichola.

Udaipur is more like a mood and you will surely follow its rhythm while you’re here.

It’s often called the Venice of the East due to the 5 gorgeous lakes, romantic atmosphere, and pleasant weather.

You will fall in love with the mysticism, the floating palaces, the architecture, and the life force that runs through this city.

These are all the unmissable things to do in Udaipur!  

12 unmissable things to do in Udaipur

1. feel the breeze of the majestic lake pichola.

There are many lakes in Udaipur but Lake Pichola stands the test of time by being one of the most romantic lakes in the East.

The sparkling waters surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range create a cool breeze that has a certain magic to it.

Add on the fact that it boasts a majestic floating palace in the middle and you’ve landed in a dream world!

Although there isn’t a specific route to explore Lake Pichola, the many Ghats which are pick-pocketed around provide a great panoramic view of it all.

Ambrai Ghat is the best for a view of the Taj Lake Palace in the open garden nearby.

2. Check into the Taj Lake Palace

This will cost you a pretty penny but how many times in your life can you say you’ve made residence on a floating palace?!

Only accessible by boat from the royal dock, this hotel is up there as one of the best in the entire world.

Its white archways laced with bougainvilleas create a spectacular retreat.

Famous for its feature in the James Bond movie Octopussy , it was originally built as a summer palace for the Maharana of Udaipur (Maharaja being a king that was defeated in battle and a Maharana being undefeated).

Even in the peak temperatures of Indian summer, the whirlwind breezes create a cool respite.

When you check in, you’re made to feel like royalty. The Taj group cannot be beaten in service and during my stay, they outdid themselves as I had quite a few calamities.

3. Step back in time at the Udaipur City Palace

Out of all the city palaces in Rajasthan, Udaipur City Palace is by far my favourite.

There’s just so much colour and character in every room.

It certainly packs out during peak season and sometimes the narrow corridors to make your way through can get claustrophobic!

The views of the lake and beyond are spectacular and you can spend at least a few hours here enjoying the grandeur.

Be sure to check out their restaurant and bar on the exit, I sipped a delicious rose flavour Gin and Tonic.

4. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola

It’s almost criminal to visit Udaipur and not take a boat ride on Lake Pichola .

Here, you can get up close and personal with famous sights and luxury hotels.

I booked my boat tour through the city palace and rode at sunset. You’ll be paying more for a sunset cruise, but it’s totally worth it for the colours the setting sun makes on the city palace and houses on the lake!

I fell in love with it and couldn’t stop snapping my camera. It was a golden hour on steroids.

Typically the boats do a 360 turn and pull up at the Jag Mandir which sits across from the Lake Palace.

Here, you can have a look around for as long as you like.

After the sun has set behind the mountains, it creates an awesome purple glow in the sky. A beautiful backdrop for the skyline.

5. Watch the sunset at the Monsoon Palace

Another beautiful place is perched on a hill towering above the city. You can make your way up by Land Rover from the booking office or take a breathless hike to the top.

Amazingly, you’ll be waiting for a 5-minute sunset. But, it’s 5 minutes worth waiting for.

I almost missed the whole thing as I was busy snapping the views from the other side!

Luckily the kind security guard pointed me in the right direction.

Watch out for the monkeys that play mischief here, they’ll be on the prowl for all things shiny and edible. They will also sit on top of your car and refuse to leave!

The winter season in Rajasthan creates a romantic orange glow at sunset and luckily these guys were the perfect muse for photos.

6. Grab a cheap Tali at Neelam’s restaurant

It’s the number one place to eat on Tripadvisor but Neelam still charges next to nothing for her homemade Tali.

A typical Tali consists of two Indian vegetarian dishes, dal (lentils), chutney, chapatis, and rice!

It’s a massive meal and it only costs 150 rupees which is perfect for the budget-conscious traveller.

Neelam makes all her food herself and the service has a friendly guest house feel to it.

You can find her place behind the Jagdish temple. You and your wallet won’t regret it!

7. Visit the Jagdish temple

Sitting in the middle of Main Street by the City Palace, the Jagdish temple is a beautiful place to visit.

It was built in 1561 and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu the creator of the world.

It is still actively used for Hindu worship today, so remember to dress appropriately. 

The carvings are the most spectacular part of the architecture here and tell the stories of the creation of the universe.

It was so peaceful walking around here and listening to the Bhajans being sung.

Remember to take your shoes off and not bring your camera inside as photography is strictly prohibited.

8. Let the Bagore Ki Haveli dance show bedazzle you

This fun and lively cultural show will transport you all over Rajasthan to watch in wonder at the different dancing styles, puppet shows, and religious prose along with traditional music.

The vibrant costumes in all different colours make a real statement on the stage.

The dancing is the most impressive part and you’ll see the Chari dance with pots of fire placed in their heads!

The ladies are all so beautiful. The most prestigious however was a 70-year-old lady, who balanced and danced with 7 heavy pots on her head! It was aging goals.

I kept thinking, I can hardly sit with my legs crossed for an hour yet without fidgeting and she can carry all those pots, walk-on glass, and dance?! Crazy.

It packs out almost every night, even in the off-season, so get in the queue promptly at 6.15 pm to guarantee a ticket and a good seat. Shows are from 7-8 pm daily.

9. Dine like royalty at Upré

There are many luxury dining options to choose from by Lake Pichola, but nothing quite beats Upré.

You can lounge on their royal cots overlooking gorgeous views of the lake and city palace.

Food is midrange to high in price but the flavours, quality, and service are so worth it!

In high season it is worth making a reservation here to save waiting. The service and location make you feel like Maharani with a feast for a queen!

10. Ride the ropeway to the Karni Mata temple

Another way to get an aerial view of the city and beyond is to visit the Karni Mata temple via the ropeway.

I wouldn’t recommend walking up the hill as there are warning signs for panthers and cobras everywhere.

Tickets are 97 rupees return (I’ve never understood these figures as anyone ever has those 3 rupees change, they usually just give sweets).

It’s a hot ride to the top and there is a typical Indian queue to wait in line and by that I mean there really isn’t one!

Despite the ride, the views from this side are outstanding and it’s worth sticking around a while getting a birds-eye view of the whole city and beyond.

On the way back, you will need to hand your ticket to the ropeway counter and receive a number.

Once your number is called on the tannoy, you can go back down via the cable car.

It took around 15-20 minutes in peak season for my number to be called, but there’s a good café nearby to pass the time with a cold drink.

11. Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs

This place is a little-known secret in Udaipur city centre which is located a few kilometres away from the tourist hub of Lake Pichola.

It’s a labyrinth of archways and has cenotaphs for days.

You can visit at sunrise and watch the rays of first morning light slowly cover them in a golden glow.

Be warned that there is a fee for photos by the security guard who runs a little monopoly on the side.

12. Take a day trip out of the city

After you’ve ticked off all the things to do in Udaipur is fantastic but the majority of it can be covered in one to two days.

After that, there are a wealth of day trips you can organise out of the city for a cheap price.

You can visit the beautiful living fort at Chittorgarh , marvel at the unique carvings in the Ranakpur Jain Temple, or climb Khumbarlargh fort ; the second largest in the world (the first being the Great Wall of China).

Private taxis should be around 2000 rupees for a full day tour or you can go on a sharing tour for 600/700 rupees per person.

Khumbarlargh fort and the Ranakpur Jain Temple you can cover together in one full day trip and Chittorgarh you can cover in another day as both are in polar opposite directions of Udaipur!

So, that’s all the best things to do in Udaipur!

So, these are my personal 12 things to do in Udaipur. But, there are plenty more things to get up to in this romantic city of lakes.

There are still so many nooks and crannies of Lake Pichola I haven’t explored and cafés I haven’t had chai in yet.

It’s a city that will make you want to come back for more and I plan to do just that!

You might be happy to add - the sahastrabahu temple ( it is quite hidden and marvelous enough to throw one off schedule very easily) and of course the lake before it ; it is surrounded by mountains and below the lake, The winding road down takes you to - the most famous only one in the country EklingJi temple.... said to be anywhere between 2000 to 3000 years old but, it is clearly the oldest in entire Udaipur regions. There are many other things and places and ancient sites on both sides of the highway of Udaipur.... Just have lots of time and water with you 🙂

For your next visit to Udaipur and for the benefit of those visiting soon, do consider Fateh Sagar lake and Maharana Pratap memorial - Moti Magri. Both these offer serene views.

Early morning or sunset visit to Badi lake and Sajjangad forts can be done which are 8 to 12 KMS away from city center.

However, by the time they were delivered, Maharana has passed away. 110 years later, in 1994, the artefacts were displayed in the gallery which has been open to the public ever since.

Although the signature dish is the very famous laal maas made out of mutton in traditional Rajasthan flavours, you can also taste some of the very sumptuous dabeli, daal baati churma, lentils, Bikaneri bhurji etc.

Travel Guide for Udaipur: Things to Know Before Planning a Trip to Udaipur

Where’s udaipur.

Udaipur’s this gem in Rajasthan, northwestern India. It’s ringed by lakes, which is why people love to call it the City of Lakes . It’s also called the Venice of the East and It kind of feels like one when you see all the water around.

Udaipur is also called the White City because many of its buildings and the famous City Palace are made from a particular type of white marble.

The city’s packed with history – think palaces that tell tales of old royalty, like the famous City Palace, and gardens that are just a feast for the eyes.

And then you’ve got these intricately carved temples. Plus, the Aravalli Hills are all around you, adding to the charm. It’s like stepping into a royal story, but it’s real, and it’s all set in some seriously pretty nature.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

Udaipur, like the rest of Rajasthan or North India for that matter, remains super hot during the summer season (March to June) so obviously, it’s not wise to plan a trip to Udaipur during summer.

The monsoon season (July to September) is again not recommended as outdoor activities are not possible at all.

But then the rainy season has its own perks. It’s when the lakes, filled up with water, look captivating, and the Aravalli Range, covered in lush greenery, teems with life.

The winter season (October to February) is a perfect time to visit Udaipur. The weather is pleasantly cool and sunny (mostly) which makes sightseeing less hectic and more fun.

If you plan to visit in December (around Christmas and New Year holidays), make sure to book flights and accommodation well in advance.

How Many Days in Udaipur

Ideally, you’d want to set aside at least two to three days to really soak in the essence of this city.

Say you’ve got a weekend in Udaipur, it’s definitely delightful, but trust me, it’s just a teaser. You’ll get a taste of the city, sure. You cruise on Lake Pichola, catch the sunset, and maybe snap some epic photos. It’s great, but Udaipur deserves more of your time.

If you want to (you must) explore the historic forts, cultural landmarks, and unique temples scattered around Udaipur (there are tons), I recommend at least a week in Udaipur.

The first time we hit Udaipur, we only had two days. Not nearly enough. We were rushing around, trying to see everything, but it was a bit of a blur. We didn’t even get a chance to step outside the city.

The next trip, we wised up and stayed for four days , focusing only on the city, no side trips, no distractions. That’s when I really got to know the place. But, that was part of a bigger Rajasthan trip that lasted two weeks . We saved the places outside Udaipur for the road trip portion, which was a blast and took us all the way to Jodhpur .

The heart of the matter is that Udaipur is not your typical rush-around kind of place. It’s the kind of place where you can take a deep breath, wander around at your own pace, and really get the feel of things. More like a luxury in the busy buzz of India!

How to Get to Udaipur

Udaipur is well-connected by air, rail, and road to the major cities in India.

Located in Dabok , Maharana Pratap Airport serves Udaipur. About 22 km from the city, it’s a domestic airport that receives flights from the major cities in India. The leading airlines that have regular flights to and from Udaipur are Indigo, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Air India.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom a road trip offers. A strong road network links Udaipur to most of the Indian cities.

In cases where the driving distance is more than we can drive in one go, we break our journey at any city en route. Like if you’re driving from Delhi to Udaipur, Jaipur or Ajmer can be chosen for a night halt.

Also, if you don’t want to use your own car, you can hire a car. There are many tour operators that provide cars for rent.

We didn’t want to drive on our own so we chose a chauffeur-driven car for our trip to Rajasthan.

If you’re also touring Rajasthan and exploring the major cities of Rajasthan, it’s wise to hire a car and driver. You not only save time and hassle but also get to explore the off-center attractions or hidden gems.

A strong bus network connects Udaipur to various Indian cities. You can choose from AC coaches or state-run buses depending upon the budget.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses connect Udaipur with other major cities in Rajasthan.

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is the nearest railway station. There are direct trains from Delhi (Chetak Express and Mewar Express) Mumbai (Bdts Aii Udz Express), Kolkata (Annanya Express), Jaipur (Udaipur City–Jaipur Intercity-Express), Indore (Udaipur City Express), and Ahmedabad (Adi Udz Express).

How to Get Around Udaipur

Udaipur is a relatively compact city. Auto-Rickshaws, taxis, and local buses (limited) contribute to the public transportation system. The narrow lanes of the old city are best explored on foot as all the attractions are located within walking distance.

If you don’t want to walk, you can opt for an auto-rickshaw. A shared auto-rickshaw comes cheaper but it sticks to the fixed route and stops at the designated (popular) stops. A private auto-rickshaw is a bit pricey but it goes anywhere you name.

For the attractions outside the city like Monsoon Palace, Badi Lake, Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ranakpur, Eklingji, and Nathdwara – a taxi is ideal. Uber and Ola are available in Udaipur.

Where to Stay in Udaipur

When in Udaipur, you’d want to stay in the old city for three reasons – firstly, most of the attractions are close by, secondly, you can drink in the views of the iconic Lake Pichola, and lastly, the old city is where the soul of Udaipur lies.

From boutique heritage hotels, and hostels, to guesthouses, and luxury hotels – the old city has all types of properties to suit your budget and style. Make sure you book in advance to score a Lakeview room.

If you ask me to suggest to you the best among all, floating right in the center of Lake Pichola, the Taj Lake Palace Hotel is a class apart. Exquisite is the word!

What and Where to Eat and Drink in Udaipur

Like most of the cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is a great place to try Rajasthani specialties like Laal Maas, Gatte ki Sabzi, Dal Bati Churma, Ker Sangri, Chakki ki Sabzi, Ghevar, Mirchi Bada, Pyaaj Kachori, Samosa, and Chaat.

Udaipur’s charm lies in rooftop lake-view restaurants and cafes. More than food, what matters here is the view you get.

From Sheesh Mahal , Upré , Ambrai , Tribute , Khamma Ghani , Charcoal by Carlsson , Jagat Niwas Palace , Restaurant Harigarh , Chandani by the Oberoi Udaivilas , Jharokha by Lake Palace Hotel , Paantya by Shiv Niwas Palace , and TWG by Hemang are quite a few amazing fine dining restaurants that offer food with a view.

All of these restaurants (except TWG Hemang which primarily serves international cuisine) offer International as well as Rajasthani cuisine.

Jheel’s Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery , a cafe perched over Lake Pichola is where you can enjoy some free time with a cup of coffee or chocolate shake.

If you’ve got enough of the views (which is unlikely), you can head to the restaurants that might not offer you the iconic views but are celebrated for various other reasons.

A charming old-world colonial house restored into a restaurant, in 1559 AD , a bistro lounge restaurant, and Royal Repast , a specialty restaurant are great places to dine out. Both these restaurants are highly appreciated for their warm staff, speedy service, and vintage ambiance.

For travelers who want to enjoy a traditional Rajasthani thali – Garden Restaurant , Natraj Dining Hall and Restaurant , Krishna Dal Bati Restro , Padam Thal , Navidya By Amantra Hotels , and Udaipuri .

We also liked Udai Art Café , Brew Villa , Yummy Yoga , and Cafe La Comida . Located right in the heart of the old city, both cafes serve great coffee and snacks.

There are tons of places in Udaipur, each with its unique charm. First off, the City Palace is a must-see. This colossal structure is steeped in history and grandeur.

Then there’s Lake Pichola. A boat ride there during the golden hours of sunset is just spellbinding.

Don’t miss the Jagdish Temple. Its intricate carvings and serene atmosphere are utterly captivating.

Next up, you can reach Karni Mata Temple by a hearty trek or a swift ropeway ride – the choice is yours, but the breathtaking views are a given either way.

The gardens of Saheliyon-ki-Bari are perfect for a leisurely and peaceful walk.

The Monsoon Palace is your ticket to the best sunset view in town – the city lights up like a jewel.

And if you’re chasing art and culture, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum showcases the best local crafts.

And there’s more than just the mainstream attractions.

Let’s not forget Maharana Pratap Samarak. It’s a tribute to a local hero, Maharana Pratap, and you can feel the pride in the air. It’s this outdoor space with a big statue of him and his loyal horse, Chetak, which is pretty awesome to see.

Udaipur is one of the most underrated and picturesque cities in Rajasthan, which often gets overruled by its more popular cousins like Jaipur and Jodhpur. It’s always said that a place that has water bodies, emanates an unusual kind of charm. And Udaipur with its numerous lakes is no different.

There is water everywhere! Almost around every bend. So much so that you begin to wonder if the city is just a collection of huge island masses floating on the water!

How to Reach Udaipur

Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport is 22km from the city center and it has connectivity to major cities in India like Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc. You can easily find taxis and autos to reach Udaipur city.

You can reach Udaipur by train from most of the Indian cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ajmer, etc and this is the mode of transportation adopted by most travelers.

Several passenger trains run on a daily basis, connecting Udaipur to other cities in Rajasthan. From the railway station, you can hire cabs or autos to reach your hostel/hotel. Udaipur city is around 3-4km from the station.

There are regular buses available to Udaipur city from major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai. Udaipur is just an overnight-journey away from most of these cities, which makes it a perfect weekend destination.

You’ll also get to choose from a variety of options, from local buses to luxury ones, depending on your budget. The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation has established connectivity to most of the cities within India.

• It’s a no-brainer that one of the top things to do in the city of lakes is to visit the lakes of course! Take a stroll around Lake Pichola or Fateh Sagar Lake during the night or late evening. And absorb the peaceful vibes of this enchanting White City.
• Watch as many sunsets as possible in this city of lakes. Watching Udaipur’s surreal lakes turn liquid gold during the golden hour of sunset is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of this city.
• Gorge on the famous Udaipur kachoris and other assortments of sweets, snacks, and street food while you drink in the vibe of this enchanting city. It’s an experience like no other.
• If you’re an art freak or have an eye for art, you’ll find Udaipur to be nothing short of heaven! Watch out for the numerous quirky art shops lurking in the hidden lanes and by-lanes of Udaipur.

Lakes, cafes and delicious food

• Go café hopping or art-shop-hopping from one colorful lane to another. Though the two activities are not really mutually exclusive! Since Udaipur’s exhaustive collection of quirky cafes are ladled with funky artsy souvenirs and artifacts.
• Walk along the marble lanes of the old town, adjoining the Lake Pichola. It’s littered with shops full of rainbow-colored garments fluttering in the breeze, glittering funky jewels, and traditional turbans. • Go for a boat ride in one of the numerous lakes. You can’t visit Udaipur and not go for a boat ride! It’s among the most clichéd things to do in Udaipur, but it’s clichéd for a reason!  The activity is best experienced either during sunrise or sunset when the water catches fire!
• Grab a spot in one of the rooftop cafes overlooking the lakes. Gorging on delicious food while watching the city lights shimmering on the lake is an experience that is nothing short of spectacular!
• Hunt for a secluded Ghat and spend some time in silence observing the water, the city, and its people. Especially visit Ambrai Ghat at night!

Getting Around in Udaipur

Most of the popular places are within walking distance from the old city center. You can also hire cabs and taxis which are aplenty throughout the city. Autos are one of the cheapest and affordable modes of transport. There are reliable Uber and Ola services throughout the city and this is the best way to explore Udaipur haggle-free.

Fun fact: I mostly explored the city through Ola Bike. It’s a taxi service, but on a bike and it’s insanely cheap and reliable. Sometimes as less as 25INR for places as far as 5km.

There are also several places where you can rent four or two wheelers for a self-drive trip.

How Many Days are Enough in Udaipur?

Most of the best places to visit in Udaipur are nearby. Making it easy to explore and a perfect destination for a quick getaway. If you’re short on time, 2 days are sufficient to explore the city’s main attractions.

And few of the beautiful locations are situated outside the city. It doesn’t matter if you’re someone who likes to take things slow. Or a traveler who likes to quickly tick off bucket list destinations. Udaipur has something to offer for every kind of traveler.

Here’s a list of some of the best places to visit in Udaipur. Along with some little tips, to make the most of your visit irrespective of the duration of stay.

Places to Stay in Udaipur

There’s certainly no dearth of accommodation in Udaipur. From rustic, cheap yet quality hostels to royal resorts, Udaipur has accommodation catering to every kind of traveler.

By choosing a central location, you’ll be able to experience the true essence of the local culture. The vibrant life and the calm amidst the chaos. And where the nonexistent traffic signals are often replaced by cows standing in all of their calm authority.

However, for the best experience, it’s recommended to find a place overlooking Lake Pichola and also located centrally.

I’d recommend Hostel Mantra . Located in one of the colorful by lanes and just a few meters away from Lal Ghat , this hostel has amazing vibes and wonderful hosts. The dorm rooms are affordable, beautiful, and vibrant. The fact that it’s a palace converted into a hostel, should be enough to give you an idea of its beauty.

Udaipur can be a low budget destination or a luxury destination, and it all depends on your preference. If you’re a budget traveler, it’s possible to find reasonable and affordable accommodation for as low as $4 or INR 300 per night. Or sometimes even less if you happen to visit during the offseason.

Zostel Udaipur , Moustache, GoStops are some of the other hostels in Udaipur .

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

Udaipur sparkles differently in different seasons. Monsoon months from July to September are considered to be the offseason in Udaipur although it receives little rainfall. But the city radiates a different charm during this time with the lakes filled to the brim and air nipped with monsoon freshness!

If you’re looking for a cool and pleasant climate to explore, winter would be a perfect time. November to February are the winter months in Udaipur.

Summer comes with its share of inconveniences like the scorching sun and unbearable heat, but this is the perfect time for photographers as you’d be able to capture great shots of sunsets and sunrises from every corner of this beautiful city. April to June is the summer season in Udaipur.

1) lake pichola.

Undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Udaipur, Lake Pichola is a haven for sunset and water lovers and is one of the most popular attractions of Udaipur, and for good reason.

Take a stroll along its banks, watch a sunset , go for a boat ride , or just spend some quality time on one of the ghats set along the lakeside.

2) Bagore Ki Haveli

Havelis are an integral part of Rajasthani culture and a trip to Udaipur is incomplete without paying a visit to at least one of these beautiful Havelis. Bagore Ki Haveli, with its numerous balconies and terraces, offers great views of Lake Pichola and Gangour Ghat

This traditional mansion houses a museum and its cultural show , with traditional folk dance which is held every evening, is the highlight of the place. The Haveli lights up and glitters during the night shedding its glow around its vicinity.

3) Gangaur Ghat

This is the main ghat situated alongside Lake Pichola near Jagdish Temple area and is a picturesque place to watch the golden sunset from.

Marble steps lead down to the lake. Come dawn, and you can find the place abuzz with locals doing their chores, yet there’s the peace that comes with the early morning hours and the sunrise. This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in the early morning.

4) Ahar Cenotaphs

There are high chances that most people who’ve visited Udaipur, wouldn’t even have heard the name of this place. In fact, some of the locals themselves weren’t aware of it. The story behind how I managed to enter this place would probably make for a separate blog post, hence I shall save it for later.

One of my most favorite and certainly one of the best places to visit in Udaipur, these Royal Cenotaphs are in a state of dilapidation due to an absolute lack of awareness. However, the lack of tourists certainly makes them even more memorable and appealing. Make sure to drop by!

5) Maharana Pratap Smarak

This is one of the underrated places to visit in Udaipur. The memorial built in honor of Maharana Pratap’s courage and valor is an essential site of historical significance.

Located on top of Moti Margi or Pearl Hill, overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake, it provides stunning panoramic views of the city. There’s a life-sized bronze statue of Maharana Pratap as well as a museum built on the premises with paintings and ancient artifacts. Stunning and delicate glassworks form the interior of the museum.

6) The Taj Lake Palace

Previously known as the Jag Niwas, this palace sits right in the middle of the lake on the Jag Mandir Island and has become an important part of Udaipur’s heritage and monuments .

It has now been taken over by the Taj group and is a popular luxury resort. You can take a boat ride to this place to enjoy the views and architecture.

7) Swaroop Sagar Bridge

One of the best times to enjoy the magical vibes of Udaipur is during the night when the city gets decorated with several colorful lights. With the lakes reflecting these orange and yellow glows everywhere, it transforms into a spectacular sight!

Udaipur is adorned with a number of ornamental arch bridges at various locations with makes for perfect vantage points to enjoy the city during the night.

8) Ambrai Ghat

My most favorite spot in the whole of Udaipur. The first time I accidentally stumbled upon this a few years back while on a family trip, I was blown away by its beauty! It was yet to be discovered by the masses and was known only to the locals. Now though it has transformed into a popular tourist spot and for the right reasons.

A place from where you can either watch the sunset or sunrise. But its true incredible beauty can only be experienced at night when the locals and tourists gather here for some peaceful time. You can also get a perfect view of Taj Lake Palace and City Palace from here and it’s especially beautiful at night.

9) Monsoon palace

Monsoon Palace or the Sajjangarh Palace is located on the outskirts of Udaipur City. And it offers great panoramic views of the Lake Pichola and Aravalli Ranges. It’s also an amazing spot to watch the sunset from and one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for great 360 degree views and photographs. You can reach this place by hiring a cab or an auto.

Something to be aware of: It’s not very easy to get Uber/Ola once you reach the top, especially after sunset. Hence plan accordingly.

10) Badi Lake

This tranquil lake is a little away from the city and not very popular yet, which makes it one of the offbeat, yet best places to visit in Udaipur. Probably the reason why it’s so beautiful. A serene place surrounded by the Aravalli hills and plenty of greenery, this is one of the lesser-known yet best places to visit in Udaipur.

11) Bahubali Hills

Situated a little away from Badi Lake , this beautiful and hidden spot is accessible through a narrow and obscure path winding through thickets and villages.

Although slightly difficult to reach, this is definitely one of the top best places to visit in Udaipur. It’s slowly gaining popularity among the tourists and is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and sunrise from. Hire an auto or self-drive to this place on your next visit to Udaipur. Also, ensure to preserve its pristine beauty while you do so. This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur during monsoons as the surrounding area would be filled with lush greenery!

12) City Palace

Situated on the banks of Lake Pichola in a beautiful combination of European, Chinese, and Medieval architecture , the City Palace is the most important and popular attraction in Udaipur.

With eleven palace complexes, built by different rulers at different times, it has several courtyards, bright elegant rooms, verandas, and hanging gardens to explore. The rooms are designed in bright colors with intricate details, mosaic patterns, and colorful glass tainted windows.

It also offers great panoramic views of Udaipur City, Lake Pichola, and Lake Palace. There are many shops, cafes as well as bathrooms located within the premises of the palace.

Although it’s certainly worth all the hype surrounding it, the extreme crowd which almost perpetually throngs the place can sometimes make the visit a tad bit less appealing. Hence if you plan on exploring the interiors of this gorgeous architecture, ensure to reach early.

But watching this gorgeous marvel in the night , when it gets sheathed with a golden clock is a delightful experience though.

13) Fateh Sagar Lake

The unending blue horizon of this lake is a pleasure to watch. Go for a drive around the lake or spend a peaceful evening here, strolling along its bank.

There are several cafes and restaurants surrounding this beautiful lake in Udaipur. If you have some spare time, you could also take a boat ride to Udaipur Nehru park situated at the center of the lake and spend some time under the shades of the trees.

14) Karni Mata Ropeway

Karni Mata is a temple on top of a hill that is accessible either by a short hike through stairs or through a cable ropeway. It’s a great spot to watch the sunrise from and it offers great views of Lake Pichola and the whole of Udaipur City.

15) Doodh Talai

The iconic Lake Pichola is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful attractions in Udaipur. But it often ends up grabbing the limelight from the other small pretty lakes and one such lake is Doodh Talai.

16) Shilpgram

This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur if you love shopping. Famous for fairs that sell textiles, handicrafts, and other craft items, this village is a haven if you wish to indulge in some authentic Rajasthani shopping. You can find an assortment of options like marble articles, mirror works, colorful souvenirs, etc. Some other best places to visit in Udaipur for shopping are Bada Bazaar, Sadhana Emporium, Hathi Pol, Rajasthali, etc.

17) Saheliyon ki Badi

This is a pretty garden a little away from the city center. With Victorian statues and lotus pools, it’s one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for an early morning stroll and to enjoy the fragrance of the myriad of flowers.

Best Places to Eat in Udaipur

A trip to Udaipur is incomplete without at least one dinner at a restaurant offering stunning views of Lake Pichola. And there’s certainly no dearth of such beautiful restaurants in Udaipur. There are exorbitant as well as cheap places to indulge in some lip-smacking culinary experience and discover for yourself, why Udaipur is popularly called the ‘Venice of the East’. These numerous pretty cafes and restaurants are reason enough to pay a visit to this city and are a few of the best places to visit in Udaipur.

Some of my tried and tested favorite cafes and restaurants are: Harigargh Restaurant and Rainbow Restaurant for a dinner beside Lake Pichola, Rainbow Café, and Café Jheel for breakfasts, Café Grasswood for evening snacks and coffee.

Best Day-Trips to Take from Udaipur

Not only is the Udaipur city filled with a plethora of attractions, but there are also several places at a short distance from the main city which you can take day trips to.

Kumbalgargh fort:

Burrowed in the foothills of the Aravalli Mountain Range, Kumbhalgarh near Udaipur is at a distance of 90km from the city and would take around 2 hours to reach. It is a majestic fortress and a major tourist attraction.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, The Kumbhalgarh fort wall is India’s very own Great Wall, and the second-longest wall in the world covering a length of 36 km around the periphery of the fort.

Chittorgargh Fort:

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chittorgargh or Chittor Fort is the largest fort in India. A sprawling citadel, more than 1,000 years old, with lavish palaces, temples & gateways. It is situated at a distance of 112km from Udaipur and can be covered in about 2.5 hours.

Ranakpur Jain Temple

Situated at a distance of 91km from Udaipur, this ancient Jain temple with intricate stone sculptures and carvings is definitely worth a visit. The place itself is remote and is accessible through winding roads amidst paddy fields and mountains.

Constructed entirely in white and amber marble adorned with elaborate carvings on its walls and pillars, this temple is an architectural marvel!

Aptly touted as the ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur has a laid back slow vibe. It latches onto you the moment you catch sight of one of its beautiful tranquil lakes and you can easily spend over a week here absorbing its charm.

Udaipur city has managed to evade the ever pervading cloak of modernization and has preserved its whimsical charm. To date, I’ve been to Udaipur thrice. And given an opportunity, I definitely wouldn’t mind a couple more trips to this place!

Udaipur, the White City of India or the City of Lakes as it’s also known in Southern Rajasthan is full of attractions like the City Palace , Monsoon Palace, many Temples and Museums, much like the other big Cities in Rajasthan . But what I found really interesting is that  it’s also full of fun and unique activities and classes!

If you are visiting Udaipur and you are a bit ‘ over ‘ all of the Fort’s, Palaces and Temples or you’re just looking for something unique to do then you’re in luck as you can spend 2, 3, 4 or even 5 days in Udaipur enjoying the classes and activities that are on offer without even stepping into many of the major tourist attractions in Udaipur .

Things To Do in Udaipur

Cooking Classes in Udaipur

Cooking Classes are a really popular thing to do in Udaipur .  They are advertised all over the City. Prices range from 300Rs to about 600Rs and you’ll get the chance to make a few different Indian dishes.

I even saw a Vegan Cooking Class in Udaipur advertised.

If you are interested in Cooking Classes in India , Udaipur is a great place to visit to test out cooking a range of dishes in a range of ways.

SIM CARD FOR INDIA

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! Art Classes in Udaipur

I’ve never really seen art classes advertised but art classes are offered all over Udaipur and there is a large range of classes too like henna art, nail art as well as painting and drawing.

Yoga in Udaipur

Yoga is offered in Udaipur in a few places which I was a very happy about. I went to morning yoga at   Nukkad Guest House which is on from 8:00-9:00am . It’s a bit of a make shift class and when I went there were only 2 of us. The teacher definitely knew his stuff but I get the impression the type of yoga he teaches is decided by him in the morning.

Another place to do yoga in Udaipur is Enteyoga  (to be honest, I’d recommend going to them over Nukkad as they seem more professional). Enteyoga hold two sessions daily depending on the bookings. 8:30-9:45am and 5:00-6:15pm and it’s common for these classes to be held in a temple by the river which is really special. You need to book the class in advance but you can contact Enteyoga by email or by instagram .

Cultural Dance Show in Udaipur

One thing I was really recommended to do in Udaipur as it’s a popular tourist attraction is an evening cultural show . At first I thought it might be a bit too cheesy for me but the day I went to see I was recommended it by a girl who went the night before and said she thought the same but still recommended it so I decided to go.

A popular cultural show in Udaipur is the Dharohar Folk Dance in the Bagore Ki Haveli Museum where Rajasthani men play music, women dance and there is a short puppet show at the end.

The Dharohar Folk Dance is on from 7:00-8:00pm but to get a good seat I recommend getting there at 6:00pm as the ticket booth opens at 6:15pm ,  it does get very busy and the area of seats is only quite small.

Also the earlier you get there the more likely you’ll be to get a seat or a seat on a small bench, otherwise you have to sit on the floor. Also, it’s outside so taking mosquito spray to spray beforehand is a good idea.

Rajasthani Puppet Show in Udaipur

Although the  Dharohar Folk Dance Show does have a puppet show section at the end, there are shows that are totally dedicated to puppets as this is something that is very popular in Rajasthan . Also, you may think that this is a bit cheesy too like me but honestly, it’s very impressive. The people who told the puppets are in full view and they are making them dance incredibly well with only very slight movements by the puppeteer.

Ayurvedic Massage in Udaipur

Ayurveda comes from India and although it’s most popular in Southern India in Kerala , around Udaipur you will find a lot of Ayurveda stores and Ayurveda massages on offer. I found it to be a bit of a sell out to be honest and it’s hard to choose a good place as so many places offer a massage and some claim to be recommended by Lonely Planet.

But like everything, speak to the person inside the shop, or out on the street, and see what vibe you get. Ayurveda is a science ( the Indian science of life infact ) so I believe it’s important to see a therapist that is really passionate about it rather than just a good sales person.

I went for an Ayurvedic massage in Udaipur at the place pictured below. I was able to barter down the price a bit and had the full body with facial ayurvedic massage . It was a bit strange but it was good, the only issue I had is that the rooms were right next to reception so it wasn’t exactly relaxing!

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

Massages in Udaipur

Ayurvedic massages in Udaipur are priced higher than a standard full body or back massage so if you are on a budget in Udaipur , you could opt for a standard massage instead as it will save you a bit of money.

Rent a moped in Udaipur

There are lots of mopeds being ridden though the main streets of the Old City of Udaipur and whilst I wouldn’t recommend this as it’s very busy with people, other bikes and rickshaws, plus the fact that there is no need to ride a moped in the Old City of Udaipur.

However if you are a confident moped driver then hiring a moped in Udaipur would be a great way to see the surrounding countryside and temples instead of having to get a rickshaw or driver.

Bike Ride Tours in Udaipur

I was recommended by a friend to do a bike tour around Udaipur and whilst I didn’t do it, I can imagine that the best way to see Udaipur is by bike as it’ll give a great unique perspective of the City are surrounding areas. Art of Bicycle Tours are highly recommended.

Watch the Sunset in Udaipur

I know this isn’t a really unique thing to do but one of the best things about Udaipur is the fact that it has so many rooftops and with rooftop restaurants so there’s no need to climb a mountain or overly plan a way to watch the sunset in Udaipur .

The best place to see the sunset is from one of the rooftop’s right along the river’s edge on the Eastern and main side of Udaipur Old City so you do not get any other buildings in view and you’ll see the sunset into the Mountains and the buildings on the other side of the City.

Be sure to stay on the rooftop until it gets dark to see the City light up as it does quickly after the sunset’s and it’s really impressive.

Visit the Spice Market in Udaipur

The Spice Market in Udaipur is a bit out of the centre of the Old City of Udaipur so you’ll need to get a rickshaw there. Man Vs Globe recommended the Spice Market to me after his visit earlier in the year and if you love the atmosphere of markets and the hustle and bustle then visiting the Spice Market in Udaipur will be a good thing to do and something that not all tourists do!

Walk around Tripura

If like me you stay in the ‘main’ side of Udaipur where the City Palace is, be sure to cross the River and check out what looks like on a map as the island in the River. There is plenty of accommodation on this side of Udaipur as well as restaurants, cafes, art classes and cooking classes but it’s a lot quieter with slightly less traffic and fewer people trying to sell you things.

I walked around here and then continued to walk along the Northern Bridge into the main land area of Ambamata which is a very local side to Udaipur, and then I crossed back into the Eastern Side.

Where to Stay in Udaipur ?

I stayed at the Pratap Bhawan Hotel in Udaipur. It was in a really good location not far from the river in the Centre of the Old City but the street that it’s in isn’t too busy. The Hotel staff were all really friendly although we had a few issues with communication as their English is quite limited, which is fine if you want to stay there, as long as you don’t need to ask many questions.

What I loved most about Pratap Bhawan Hotel is that my Double Room was a great size with an ensuite, comfy double bed and a window seat with views over the lake and nearby buildings! It really added to my stay in Udaipur!

I came across your youtube channel a while ago and found your blog from a link on Indiabybackpack. I'm just wondering if you had 3 days would you rather spend it in Udaipur or Jodhpur? I have 4 nights / 3 days and I'm tossing up between the 2. I saw your other post on Jodhpur and your 1st impression. I'd be keen to do a day tour with the homestay you were at. So what would you choose, Jodhpur (with the village day tour) or Udaipur? ;)

Hello, I'm so glad you found me through my youtube and india by backpack! I'd say Udaipur if I was just comparing the two cities as it's much prettier, quieter and nicer to see, however the homestay was a total highlight of my trip! The only thing to keep in mind with the homestay is that it's about one hour from Jodphur. You could do 2 nights at the homestay and 2 in Jodhpur / Udaipur, or maybe look at one night in the homestay and 3 nights in Udaipur, taking into account the travel between them! Maybe get in contact with the Homestay- Chhotoram Prajapat's and see what they can offer and work one of the cities round that? :)

Udaipur Travel Guide: 13 Best Places to Visit in Udaipur

Udaipur is not at all like the place shown in movies. Sure, it does offer you Rajasthani culture to look at but it is much more than that.

This peaceful city, surrounded by the Aravalli ranges, is one of the most picturesque cities you can ever be to. And there is a list of best places to visit in Udaipur that will show you how diverse and culturally rich this city is.

With its numerous lakes and palaces, it is different from all the places you have been so far. This is why it should definitely have a spot on your bucket list. Spend a week here and gorge on their delicious food and explore the beautiful palaces around. 

In this Udaipur travel guide, I will be sharing all the details about my trip to Udaipur including how to reach, when to visit, and the best places to visit in Udaipur.

Best Places to Visit in Udaipur

Udaipur is often called the  Venice of the East  and if you visit here then you would know that this actually holds true. This small Rajasthani city was previously the capital of the Mewar Kingdom and was founded in 1559 by Maharaja Udai Singh II.

It is a small city but is surrounded by the beautiful Aravalli mountain ranges and artificial lakes which makes it a popular getaways for a fun weekend from Delhi . And the best part about this city is that you don’t have to travel far to reach a place.

Most of the major attractions are located nearby which makes exploring this city easy and quick. In Udaipur, you will learn about the lavish royal lifestyle by heading to the City Palace, Jal Mahal, and so on.

So, if you are looking for a short break in a peaceful city while indulging in the Rajasthani culture and would like to taste some delicacies then Udaipur City is the perfect destination.

How to Reach Udaipur City

Similar to Jaipur, Udaipur is a popular destination in Rajasthani so it is well-connected to other North Indian cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc. and a few places from the South and Central India as well. You have three modes of transportation to reach Udaipur City: Air, Train, and Road.

Maharana Pratap Airport is the main airport for the Udaipur City which is located in Dabok, 22km away from the Udaipur City. You will get regular flights to this airport from other major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, etc.

From the airport, you can hire taxis, cabs, or autos to reach the Udaipur City which will take about 30-35 minutes of travel time.

Udaipur City is well-connected to most of India via the Railway lines which includes Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ajmer, and so on.

In Rajasthan, you will find several passenger trains as well running daily which will connect Udaipur to other cities in Rajasthan. From the train station, you can take an auto or an Uber to your hostel/hotel. You can also walk to your accommodation place if 3-4 km is not a big deal for you.

From Delhi, there are only 2-3 direct trains to Udaipur so plan in advance your trip to the Udaipur City. A Sleeper coach in the Delhi to Udaipur City train will cost about 380 – 400 INR but make sure you book it in advance.

I, personally, reached Jaipur first and then took a Second Sitting ( 2S ) from Jaipur to Udaipur which cost me about 175 INR and took 6-7 hours to reach.     View this post on Instagram         

You will also find regular buses available to the Udaipur City from major cities like Delhi, Indore, Jaipur, Kota, etc. From local to private buses, you will get a lot of options to choose from depending on your budget.

With the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation, you will also get buses to cities like Jodhpur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, and so on.

A.C Private buses from Delhi to Udaipur will cost you between 900 to 2000 INR and will take around 12 – 14 hours to reach.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

Here is a detailed breakup of what to expect in Udaipur during different climates .

Winter Season

Whether you are visiting Jaipur or Udaipur, if you are looking for a cool climate, the winter months from November to February are perfect.

During this time, it is easier to stay out and explore the city. You will also be able to enjoy the lakes here at this time and will be able to spend more time in the palace complexes.

Since Udaipur City is surrounded by the Aravalli mountain ranges, this place remains cool most of the year.

Monsoon Season

Although Udaipur City experiences little rainfall, it doesn’t hinder your trip and can actually be a boon in disguise. This is because the water level in the lakes rises and you can witness the freshness of this city properly.

The colors are more vibrant during this time and the temperature is still bearable. So, if you wish to experience Udaipur in fresh and vibrant colors then monsoon is the best time to visit Udaipur.

The monsoon months are from July to September in Udaipur.

Summer Season

This is probably the worst time to visit Udaipur City because the temperature is high and the lakes are all dried up. So, avoid visiting Udaipur from April to June as you won’t be able to truly enjoy it.

13 Best Places to Visit in Udaipur

Udaipur City is smaller than most Rajasthani cities and towns but still has a lot to offer in terms of views and sightseeing. Here are a few places that you can check out on your short trip to this cultural city.

City Palace

Situated on the banks of Lake Pichhola, City Palace is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur City.

Constructed by Maharana Udai Mirza Singh in 1559, it boasts of a beautiful combination of architecture styles (European, Chinese, and Medieval). This palace has 11 palace complexes inside, built by different rulers at different time periods.

So, you have several courtyards, terraces, hanging gardens, etc. to explore in this giant mansion. 

It also offers you a gorgeous view of the Udaipur lake and the Udaipur lake Palace on one side of the palace. And you can see the entire Udaipur city from the other side of the palace which makes it a great spot for panoramic views as well.

Entry Fees: 330 INR for Indians (Access to palace complexes and museums, including photography)

Opening Timings: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Duration: 2-4 hours

Gangaur Ghat

Located in the heart of Udaipur City, Gangaur Ghat is a prime location for watching sunsets or just hanging out with your friends.

Here, you will observe the locals going about their work, and the photography enthusiasts crowding this place during the morning time.

This is one of the main ghats of Udaipur City and gets extremely crowded during festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Navarathri, and so on.

So, if you want to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset then Gangaur Ghat should be the place to visit.

Opening Hours: All day

Ambrai Ghat

One of the less explored yet best places to visit in Udaipur City, Ambrai Ghat is the perfect destination for evening strolls and night photography enthusiasts.

From here, you can see the entire Lake Pichhola in its complete glory along with the beautifully lit up City Palace, Jag Mandir, Jal Palace, and so on.

You definitely have to visit this place at the night time if you want to see the true beauty of Udaipur and you can also enjoy a delicious meal in one of the lakeside restaurants here.

Duration: 2-3 hours

Taj Lake Palace

One of the most royal and romantic resorts in India, Lake Palace was previously known as Jag Niwas but now has been taken over by the Taj group.

It has become one of the most sought-after resorts now and should certainly be in your itinerary if you are interested in Udaipur’s heritage and monuments.

It consists of several islands, on one of which lies the famous lake palace, and is situated on the famous Lake Pichhola which makes the views from this palace even more enchanting.

You can take a boat ride to this lake palace to enjoy the view and then head back to the city so that you don’t have to pay an exorbitant amount to stay at this resort.

Opening Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Boat Ticket Prices: 450 INR (Approximately)

This small island in the middle of Lake Pichhola is quite popular for its amazing interior design and royal architecture style. Also, the view of the lake from this temple island is quite mesmerizing and the detailed sculptures on the marble make it truly an artistic marvel.

You can take a calm and peaceful boat ride to this place to enjoy the views and immerse yourself in the serene and peaceful vibes which are emanated by this place.

Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Duration: 1-2 hours

Monsoon Palace

Also known as the Monsoon Palace, this ancient fort lies on the outskirts of Udaipur and is situated some 12 km away from the Udaipur City Palace. Surrounded by Aravalli ranges, this is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for anyone who wishes to just observe the green Aravalli ranges and enjoy the strong winds blowing through this palace.

This palace also provides you with a panoramic view of the Udaipur city, its palaces, and lakes and trust us, you would do better to not miss this absolutely gorgeous place.

Entry Fee: 90 INR for Indians

Opening Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Ahar Cenotaphs

Another less explored yet amazing place to visit in the Udaipur City is the Ahar Cenotaphs which is located next to the Ahar Museum.

This place contains around 250 cenotaphs of the Mewar rajas which were built over 350 years approximately. This is definitely a great spot for photography and one can spend an hour or two here quite easily.

However, if you are looking to do a proper photography session here, then you need to pay the guard 50 INR per person to get access. You can also check out the Ahar museum here to learn more about the royalties who lived here.

Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Udaipur City is popularly known as the City of Lakes so it is no surprise that there are some gorgeous lakes here which you have to visit when exploring the city. One such pristine lake is the Lake Badi which is situated 12 km away from the Udaipur City, in the Badi village.

This artificial lake was built by Maharana Raj Singh I in 1963 to help the people of Udaipur City during a devastating drought. It is one of the finest freshwater lakes in India and is a great place to relax and rejuvenate yourself. Trust me, this is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur and should definitely be a part of your Udaipur itinerary.

Entry Fee: 20 INR

Shilpgram is the Arts and Craft village in the Udaipur City where you can learn about the Rajasthan culture and lifestyle. If you love purchasing traditional arts and crafts or if you like indulging in the local traditions then you would love Shilpgram.

Here, you can observe the Rajasthani customs and be entertained by the scheduled dance performances that occur almost daily here. Explore the entire village and look at different huts displaying various Rajasthani items while depicting the lifestyle of Rajasthan.

Entry Fee: 65 INR

Opening Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Lake Pichhola 

Lake Pichhola is one of the main lakes of the Udaipur City which was named after a nearby village, Picholi. This lake is home to a few islands which holds a few famous monuments and palaces of the Mewar dynasty. Also, the gorgeous Aravalli mountain ranges offer an amazing backdrop to this lake and make it a sight to behold.

There are a couple of ferries which go to and fro on this lake. They will take you to the Jagmandir island to visit the famous Jag Mandir temple over there or to the Taj Lake Palace for exploring the monuments.

You can also spend some time on the Jaal Boraj Road. It lies between the Pichhola lake and the Dudh Talai lake and provides you with an unobstructed view of the lighted Jag Mandir temple at night.

Fatehsagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is a gorgeous place to visit on your Udaipur trip where you can enjoy a nice and peaceful evening stroll and eat on the numerous stalls lined next to the lake.

This place can be called the Marine Drive of Udaipur where you can enjoy a short ride beside the lake or you can just sit down to experience the cool, soft breeze blowing here.

You can also take a ferry and cross the lake to reach the Udaipur Nehru Park, which is a beautiful place to stroll around and spend some time under the trees shade. This is a perfect picnic spot in Udaipur and spend a couple of hours, surrounded by the lake.

Ferry Ticket Price: 50 INR

Opening Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Chand Pole Puliya

The streets get empty early at night around 11 p.m and there are only a few shops open. This makes it perfect for a night stroll to witness the silence and the beauty of this calm, peaceful city. Chand Pole Puliya is a narrow bridge which connects the Udaipur city over the underlying Lake Pichhola.

Take a stroll through this bridge at night because the whole of Udaipur is lighted up at night. And I swear the view from the bridge is too beautiful and indescribable.

In fact, the bridges are lighted up at night too. So if you are at Chand Pole Puliya, you are likely to see the other bridge lighted with lamps and bulbs. And the light is reflected on the flowing lake water offering you with a mesmerizing view.

Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple

Another place that you should not miss out on is the Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple which is only accessible by the ropeway. This temple is located on the Machla Magra hills, near Doodh Talai and offers the most amazing view of the entire Udaipur City.

You can also enjoy a beautiful sunset view from here along with a beautiful reflection on Lake Pichhola.

Karni Mata Ropeway Fee: 90 INR (approximately) for Indians

Opening Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Top Things to Do in Udaipur

Watch a sunset from the karni mata temple viewpoint.

If you could not witness the sunset from Sajjangarh fort due to some reason, don’t be disheartened. Udaipur has its own Sunset Point in place for you to visit and enjoy the last rays of the setting sun while looking over the Udaipur lake and enjoying the pleasant breeze flowing around you.

After taking a ropeway to the Karni Mata Temple, you will find a tower from where you can witness a gorgeous sunset. You can also see the entire Udaipur City along with Lake Pichhola, Jag Mandir, etc. from this sunset point too.

Stroll Around the Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is one of the best places to stroll around in the evening or at nighttime. You can watch the water moving smoothly in the lake or you can just hang out with your friends and enjoy each other’s company.

Trust me, walking around this lake is really peaceful, especially in the evening. And is a great way to enjoy your surroundings and have deep conversations with your friends and family.

Enjoy a Delicious Kulhad Coffee at Bambaii Bazaar

Lying next to the Fateh Sagar Lake, you have the Bambaii Bazaar which is quite famous for its delicacies and the authentic Kulhad Coffee.

So, you can enjoy snacks like Pav Bhaji, Chowmein, etc. along with a kulhad of coffee which has chocolate sauce in it.

I am not exaggerating but a visit to Udaipur City without trying the famous Kulhad Coffee is a trip incomplete.

Enjoy a Night View of the Pichhola Lake from Ambrai Ghat

As I mentioned before, if you want to take night shots of the beautifully lit City Palace, Taj Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, etc. then Ambrai Ghat is the perfect place. Just head to this place in the evening and watch the sun setting down and then the entire Udaipur City getting lit up with colorful lights.

Trust me, it is one of the most magical sights ever and you would be a fool to miss it.

Ride the Ropeway to Karni Mata Temple

Another popular activity to do in Udaipur City is to visit the Karni Mata temple via ropeway. Here, you can  enjoy the beautiful view in front of you. You can see Lake Pichhola along with the Aravalli mountain ranges while traveling in the ropeway which is, in turn, an amazing experience.

Taste Laal Maas in a Lakeside Restaurant in Udaipur City

For all the non-vegetarians out there, Laal Maas is a must-try dish in the Udaipur City. It is a popular delicacy here of Mutton and is quite delicious and unique. So, make sure you eat it in a lakeside for a delicious food with a view.

Watch the Sunset from the Monsoon Palace

One of the top places to watch a sunset in the Udaipur City is the Monsoon Palace which gives you an unobstructed view of the sunset. So, if you visit on a clear and sunny day then you can see the most gorgeous sunset from the balcony of this palace.

And the Aravalli mountain ranges offer a magical backdrop to this sunset, making it a perfect Instagram-worthy sunset to capture.

Shop at the famous Hathi Pol Bazaar

Hathi Pol Bazaar is quite famous for a shopping spree and offers you a range of clothing, accessories, etc. to choose from. You will find really colorful items here but your bargaining skills should be top-notch if you don’t want to end up spending a fortune here.

Have a Romantic Meal in the Lake view Restaurants

Okay, it doesn’t have to be a romantic meal with someone, you can enjoy some solitude here on a solo trip too. But, having dinner beside the lake is a must for a complete Udaipur City feeling. Unless you experience it, you won’t be able to see why people called Udaipur the  Venice of the East.

Spend an Afternoon Around the Badi Lake

I have been to Udaipur City twice but it was only on my second visit that I was able to explore the Badi Lake which I am glad that I did. This lake is situated a little away from the city which makes it peaceful and beautiful to explore.

You won’t hear a sound here and can easily spend a couple of hours just looking at the mountains and the surrounding lake water.

Trust me, one of the best things to do in Udaipur is to head out to this lake and spend an entire evening here. This such a unique lake that you won’t get bored of looking out at the views here.

How to Travel Locally

Since Udaipur City is small, you don’t have too many transportation options here as most of the places are at walkable distance. However, if you don’t wish to walk the entire day then here are a few ways to explore Udaipur City.

Auto-rickshaws

One of the major modes of transportation in the Udaipur City are auto-rickshaws which charge 75 – 100 INR for a 2-3 km distance. You will find auto-rickshaws at all the junctions and streets. But you would need to bargain a lot to get them to lower the prices.

If you have Ola app installed then you can Ola Autos here too.

Taxis and Cabs

Apart from the Autos, you have had an extensive network of Uber cabs here which cover most of the corners. The prices are decent but a lot of streets are one-way in Udaipur so they might drop you before your destination.

Walking and Cycling

One of the best ways to explore the Udaipur City is by walking or hiring a cycle. You can hire a cycle for a day for 100 – 200 INR and can easily cover most of the attractions here.

But if you don’t mind walking then you can easily walk to the City Palace, Fatehpur Lake, Ambrai Ghat, etc.

Where to Eat in Udaipur City

I am a foodie but I am not a person who believes in going to expensive or fancy hotels/resorts. So, here are a few places which I tried in the Udaipur City for budget meals which were delicious at the same time.

Natraj Restaurant

Natraj Restaurant is one of the oldest eateries in Udaipur City and is certainly one of the best too. You get the most delicious Daal Baati Churma here. But if you are craving some other cuisines, then you will get that here too.

They make particularly nice north Indian meals and have decent pricing. So, a meal for two people will cost about 400 – 500 INR .

Note: This is a purely vegetarian restaurant.

Al Rehmaniya Lake View Restaurant

For people who crave non-vegetarian, Al Rehmaniya Lake View Restaurant is a good choice. Here, you get the most delicious Laal Maas and also get a variety of chicken and other meat dishes. A meal for two will cost about 300 – 400 INR for two people and will be quite filling.

Vinod Fast Food, Fateh Sagar Lake

This is probably one of the cheapest eateries in the Udaipur City and serves the most delicious Pav Bhajis ever. You will also get a delicious Kulhad Coffee here and can try other snacks here like sandwiches, chowmein, dosa, and so on.

A meal for two people will cost about 200 – 250 INR here.

Note: Once you are done with your meals, make sure you try the Kulfi here. There are many Kulfi stalls available throughout Udaipur. It will cost just 20 INR per person and will be mouth-watering.

Where to Stay in Udaipur City

Udaipur city is a popular traveling destination so you will find several hostels, hotels, and resorts for your accommodation. Here are a few accommodation options to consider for yourself.

28. Under The Sun Aquarium

With the biggest public aquarium in India, Under The Sun Aquarium is the pride of Udaipur. Here you’ll meet some 200 different species of marine life, and guess what, at the same time enter the tank, feed them, and live a life of a fish yourself. One of the best activities in Udaipur is to enjoy amidst the aquatic life and cherish the moment of giant fishes passing your fingers while you wait and watch.

29. Haldighati- Revisit The History

Dedicated to Maharana Pratap and his horse Chetak, Haldighati is the place where the great warrior fought Raja Man Singh of Amber. The place is named Haldighati because of the color of the soil is turmeric like yellow. There is also a cenotaph built in the memory of the loyal horse Chetak who served his master till death. If a historian in you is curious all the time to know more and more about the destination you are visiting, Haldighati is the location which you can’t miss.

30. Ranakpur Jain Temple- Feel The Essence Of Spirituality

Carved with great opulence, Ranakpur Jain Temple is an architectural marvel. The temple with its towering domes and turrets rise majestically amidst the hills. It is a treat for the eyes to look at and must-visit for history fanatics. It covers an area of 48000 sq. km and is also one of the largest temples of Udaipur.

How To Reach Udaipur

Udaipur is a unique and fascinating city with a rich heritage and we feel like we definitely short-changed ourselves by not doing one during our stay.

The center of the city is very walkable, though tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) are available near the waterfront as well as deeper into town.

No matter how you end up in Udaipur, it’s hard to deny that this is one great city to wander around in for a few days.

While certainly showing its age (much of the city dates from the 16th century, after all), Udaipur is a beautiful place built around a handful of lakes and surrounded by dramatic mountains.

Owing to its historic city center and dramatic scenery, Udaipur has served as the setting for a number of Hollywood and Bollywood movies, most notably the James Bond movie Octopussy , which they really play up in these parts. In fact, a number of venues offer daily screenings of the film.

Udaipur is also popular for weddings and honeymoons and is often billed as the most romantic city in India.

Walking around central Udaipur not only gives you a sense of the history and culture of this amazing city, but also offers endless opportunities for getting lost in its bustling streets and winding alleyways.

And the best part is, you never know what you may find around the next corner…

Chatting up the locals in the city center was also one of our favorite things to do in Udaipur.

This part of town receives a lot of international tourists, and local residents here seem to speak a lot more English than we’ve encountered in other cities across India.

But the best part about chatting up locals in central Udaipur might just be the relaxed atmosphere and absence of the high pressure touts we’ve encountered in places like Agra, Varanasi, and Delhi.

Take the time to tour one the multitude of Havelis (historic mansions) in Udaipur. The city is full of these beautiful places!

Or, better yet, stay the night in one!

We recommend checking out Jagat Niwas Palace (from US$113) for the ultimate 17th century Udaipur Haveli stay in the heart of the the city, just steps away from the City Palace. Jagat Niwas features Ayurvedic massages, horseback riding, folk puppet shows, and one of the best lake-side restaurants in Udaipur!

Just northwest of Jagat Niwas, check out Amet Haveli (from US$119) for another excellent heritage stay near the center of Udaipur’s best attractions. Amet Haveli may be a bit farther away from the action than Jagat Niwas, but the reward is amazing views of the City Palace and Udaipur skyline.

We stayed in Dream Heaven Haveli and enjoyed our time there. However, that was a few years ago and reviews aren’t so stellar these days. But if you’re looking for an economical place to stay (rooms start at US$14/night) near the heart of the action with A/C and phenomenal city views, Dream Heaven Haveli might fit the bill.

Ghats are those steps you see in a lot of river and lake towns in India running down into the water. Some are holy and/or historic places, while others just make for a stunning place to rest.

Ghats are some of the best places to visit in Udaipur for spectacular views and unique insights into daily life.

Four ghats you should definitely check out are Gangaur Ghat (the “ultimate sunset point” in town), Ambrai (Hanuman) Ghat for stunning city views and delicious food, Laal Ghat , a holy site for pilgrims and devotees, and Nav Ghat , the city’s boat dockyard.

Short on time? See the ghats by boat!

Taking a guided ghat tour and boat ride offers a unique perspective on this ancient and atmospheric city on the lake.

One important thing to note about Lake Pichola is the variable water level. We visited Udaipur toward the end of the monsoon season when the lakes were at their deepest. Yet, large portions of the lake actually dry out for much of the year, making for a popular recreational area for residents (see below).

Hit the weather and the crowds right and you might very well discover that the ghats end up being among your very favorite places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days!

You can’t spend three days in Udaipur without visiting one of the most historic and beloved places to visit in Udaipur – the City Palace.

Heck, the palace is so conspicuous, it’s virtually impossible to escape a view of it!

The City Palace is actually a number of separate palaces constructed over a span of 400 years. The entire complex is now a museum open to the public, except for Shiv Niwas Palace and the Fateh Prakash Palace which both have been converted into heritage hotels.

Get your tickets at the door or skip the line and  reserve a tour in advance online .

The palace houses a number of artifacts, paintings, and decorative furniture once used by its former royal residents.

City Palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur, so make sure you buy your tickets as soon as you arrive in town.

Part of our City Palace ticket included access to the palace boat docks from where you can catch a ferry out to Jag Mandir , one of Udaipur’s famed lake palaces.

While it’s not the Lake Palace ( Jag Niwas ), it’s certainly worth the journey and the time strolling around the grounds.

There is a cafe operated by a local hotel group within the palace courtyard. However, if you’ve spent the last month backpacking around India like we have, you may find the cafe prices a bit hard to stomach.

From the ferry to (and from) Jag Mandir, we got a close-up view of the famous Taj Lake Palace Hotel (not to be confused with the Taj Mahal in Agra or Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, of course).

Scenes from 007’s Octopussy were filmed here and now it’s an exclusive hotel.

For many visitors, Lake Pichola is a highlight of their visit and one of their favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

If you’ve got three days in Udaipur, you might as well get some ink done.

Mehndi art “tattoos” aren’t really tattoos at all, but intricate ink (henna) designs that fade after about two weeks.

Lori’s Mehndi, a day or two later, after the paste had dried and fallen off. We were pretty impressed with the work.

Make sure you choose a reputable place to get your Mehndi done, as less scrupulous parlors across India have been known to use caustic chemicals that can leave permanent scars. It’s also worth noting that some people have reported allergic reactions to the henna dye. With all that said, Lori’s experience was very positive.

Jagdish Temple  was located very close to our guesthouse, but we waited to visit it until our last full day.

Call it temple burnout or just bigger fish to fry in Udaipur, but Jagdish ended up at the bottom of our shortlist of things to do in Udaipur.

But we were so glad we did fit it into our visit and encourage others to visit as well.

Jagdish Temple is not to be missed if you happen to be in this part of town. It quickly became one of our favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

We enjoyed viewing the Monsoon Palace at sunset every evening from our guesthouse balcony. And eagerly waited for a weather window to visit the famous landmark.

Even if you’ve only got three days in Udaipur, the Monsoon Palace is so iconic, we still recommend you try to fit a visit in. The best way to do so in a limited timeframe is by going with a tour.

There are a number of tour companies in the city center that offer day trips, and many guesthouses and hostels can also arrange a trip as well. You can even book a private sunset tour of the Monsoon Palace online!

If you aren’t able to squeeze a visit in, not to worry. There are still plenty of other places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days!

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 3 Days – Favorite Bites

We found Udaipur to be a most agreeable place in no small part due to the food!

Udaipur has a great selection of cuisines and the food is top-notch, not to mention that the views at some of the places we ate were worth the cost of the meal, alone.

Here are a few of our favorite eating places to visit in Udaipur:

Chandni at Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel topped our list of favorite places to visit in Udaipur for dinner — a bit pricey for India (ran us around US$13 and we generally share a thali or entree/appetizer) but well worth it.

The dining room is in a really cool setting surrounded by the palace with a great view of the lake.

The restaurant serves Indian, Continental, and Chinese dishes, but they are known for their local specialties.

Ambrai was perhaps our second favorite place to eat in Udaipur, with great views of the city, and within a short walk of our guesthouse.

Also a bit pricey by India standards (US$10 splitting a meal), but worth it. Most people seem to visit Ambrai for the atmosphere and the tasty tandors!

These two cafes are right next to each other, offering good coffee, tasty pastries, sandwiches, and European breakfast offerings that were better than most attempts we’ve come across in India.

If you’re from Europe or North America and missing a taste of “home,” these two places might quench your craving.

Learn to Cook Your Favorite Indian Dishes in Udaipur!

There are a number of excellent cooking class options available for visitors to Udaipur. This private 4-hour Indian cooking class is one of the best values we’ve seen. We really wish they had this when we were staying in Udaipur!

Taking the Train from Jaisalmer or Jodhpur to Udaipur

Udaipur is located in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, about 250 miles southwest of Jaipur.

Coming from Jaisalmer, it wasn’t immediately clear how to get to Udaipur, as there is no direct rail link between the two cities, which we found incredibly surprising given India’s vast network of rail.

Even if we had backtracked to Jodhpur, there’s still no direct service, even though Jodhpur and Udaipur constitute two of the most significant population centers in the state and are only about 150 miles apart.

We did find, however, that if you wanted to travel exclusively by rail , you can take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, then hop the train to Marwar Junction, change for Ajmer Junction, then on to Udaipur — a very long journey for a very short distance!

Or…better yet…you can do what we ended up doing and take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur and catch the early morning express bus to Udaipur , which only took us about five hours and cost far less than piecing together a rail journey.

And best of all, it’s a surprisingly scenic ride over mountains and through jungle (more on that below).

Taking the Express Bus from Jodhpur to Udaipur

In India, the government buses generally seem to be the safest based on our own experience and from what people have told us. We’ve found them to be reliable and generally on-time as well.

To catch the government bus in from Jodhpur to Udaipur, we got off the train from Jaisalmer a stop early at  Raika Bagh , rather than taking the train all the way to Jodhpur station. Raika Bagh is where the government bus stand is located .

From the train station, it’s less than a five-minute walk out and around to the bus stand.

Our overnight train from Jaisalmer arrived at 5:10am and the bus to Udaipur was scheduled to leave between 5:30am and 6:00am. We purchased tickets for the bus at the bus stand right before departure, and were satisfied with the level of comfort and safety of our bus journey.

Private Transfer from Jodhpur to Udaipur

If that all sounds like to much work (or you just don’t want to mess with a 5:30am departure), there are plenty of private shuttle options available too.

This top-rated private shuttle from Jodhpur to Udaipur is an excellent option for US$45 and even includes a stop-off at the Ranakpur Temple .

Hi Ravi, thanks for your comment! When we visited a few years back, there weren’t nearly as many options for lake tours as now. Our boat tour was included in the price of the City Palace entry fee, and we were simply told afterwards to head to the landing to catch the boat. If we were visiting in 2021, we’d combine the boat tour with a city tour and probably do something like this one .

Where to stay in Udaipur

Based on our experience, the best place to stay in Udaipur is just on the outskirts of the city . We stayed at a hotel called Treebo Trend Park Classic ; which is situated just outside of the main city centre. It's a quick 10 minute ride into the heart of the action, but you also have the choice to completely skip it out when exploring places to visit just outside Udaipur.

Location-wise, this hotel was great; but it certainly fell short in a number of other areas. Including customer service, dining and cleanliness.

Instead, here's a look at some much better accommodation in Udaipur, all designed to suit different budgets ...

Best Airbnb - Dera Baghdarrah Luxury Wildlife Camp

Located 20km outside of the city, this is perhaps the most unique and mesmerising place to stay in Udaipur. Sure, you will need to travel back into the city to see the sites; however this camp offers a whole new experiencein itself! The camp is located on the banks of Bagdara Lake, nestled wonderfully within a nature reserve. The camp was set up as a joint venture with the states Forestry Department, offering guests the chance to get up close and personal and live amongst the wildlife. You get to stay in your own private glamping tent and can opt for a package stay which includes all of your meals.

Budget Choice - Hostel Mantra

Located in Udaipur's Old City, it's the perfect choice if you're backpacking through India and are looking for a fun place to meet people and enjoy Udaipur's night life. The hostel is within walking distance of a number of bars, shops and restaurants and they offer a range of both dorm rooms and private rooms. So great if you are travelling as a couple and still want a bit of privacy (like us!).

Mid-range option - Trident Udaipur

Located just 5 miles from the city centre, this is the perfect location that we recommend for escaping the main noise of the city, but still being close enough to grab a quick taxi ride in. Compared to Western standards, this place offers PHENOMENAL value for money , and is nothing short of a 5 star resort! It's spread over a 43 acre site, right besides the gorgeous Pichola Lake. There is a huge outdoor pool and relaxation area, as well as 3 on-site restaurants.

Luxury pick - The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur

All across India, Oberoi hotels are some of the finest and most awe inspiring hotels you will find. Their Udaipur site is easily one of the finest, situated on the banks of Lake Pichola, spread across a 50 acre site, and designed in magnificent style to mimic the famous palaces of India . The 2 outdoor pools are heated and there are all of the luxuries and mod-cons you would expect including outdoor spa, high quality on-site restaurants and traditional outdoor music. Seriously, just check this place out!

Getting around Udaipur

There are many options for getting around Udaipur, including...

• Uber and Ola - Super convenient and a really cheap way to get around. Having a local sim is useful, that way you can use your data to order them from anywhere. We found that Airtel is the best network, and it’s super cheap to get a sim- you’ll just need your passport, visa and a passport photo and head into any Airtel store. ‍
• Tuk-Tuks - These can be rented via Uber and Ola too, or you can negotiate direct with a driver. A good thing to do is look on Ola and see how much the journey is supposed to be, then you’ll have a rough idea of what’s fair when you’re haggling for a price. Generally, you go 50 rupees higher than what the Ola says and you’ll probably come to a fair deal. ‍
• Moped - You can easily rent mopeds in Udaipur. There are vendors all over the main city advertising it and it’s cheap and fuss-free. They will take either your driving licence (don’t give your passport) or a deposit. This is how we got around, as a moped gives you more flexibility to visit the other lakes and sites we’ve spoken about without a time limit. If you have just 2 days in Udaipur and want to see all the brilliant places I recommended, then a moped is a good shout.
• Organised tour - If you don't feel comfortable riding a moped, and arranging your own transport fills you with dread, then it may be best to book onto a scheduled private tour each day. Such as this full day tour here which takes you to many of the best sites in Udaipur mentioned below. Plus, you get a nice air-conditioned car to sit in and a guide who can give you more information about each site as you are there.

The best places to visit in Udaipur India

Now for the good part, the top places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days! I will take you through the various places we visited, and some places we didn’t quite make it too. Because we work when travelling, it can cut our “sightseeing” time short, but if you’re just travelling, then you will manage all these sights with two days in Udaipur.

As with any 2 days trip, things are going to be busy, but this list is full of great places to go in Udaipur that really very little should be missed. Start your day early to take full advantage of what Udaipur has to offer.

1. City Palace

The Udaipur City Palace is one of the main, (if not the main) attraction in Udaipur and it should definitely be on your list of places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. It will take around an hour or so to explore this beautiful palace and it’s a cheap experience.

It opens from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, and Bradley and I went at 4 and had enough time. It can get super busy, but if you go super early you might be able to beat the crowds. The palace complex itself is beautiful and there is a restaurant that serves actual gold coffee (As you can imagine, that's kind of expensive!)

I would recommend getting a guide to tell you all the stories and history of the place. It’s not expensive and whilst everything is in English, you still miss out on some of the essences without a guide.

Cost:   INR 300 (for foreigners)

‍ 2. Lake Pichola

Pichola Lake is an artificial freshwater lake and one of the largest and oldest lakes in Udaipur. It is famous for its scenic beauty & surroundings. Basically, it’s the tourist hotspot and it offers some fabulous dining options with a beautiful view of the lake. We dined at one of the restaurants near the lake for sunset dinner and drinks and it was well priced, great staff and good cocktails, plus the view were beautiful.

For the life of me I can’t remember the name of it, but I am pretty sure it was on the first page of Tripadvisor for restaurants near lake Pichola. I think the lake is best appreciated in the evening, so make sure you include it in your Udaipur 2 day itinerary. This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur at night.

You can hire a boat for the day and go to the lake, or you can even take a sunset boat ride which whilst I didn’t do it, sounds pretty romantic.

3. Jagdish temple

This is a fabulous Hindu temple just outside the city palace. It’s dedicated to Vishnu (preserver of the universe). You’ll naturally see this site on your journey to the temple.

4. Fateh Sagar Lake

Another essential lake on your list of awesome places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

It’s located north of Pichola lake and is just as beautiful. It may even be considered more beautiful due to the fact there are fewer tourists there. Around sunset, you will see lots of local families standing around ready to admire the beautiful view, and you should too!

There are a couple of street food vendors around if you’re feeling peckish.

5. Monsoon Palace

If you seek beautiful views of Udaipur from above, then this is a great spot to visit. You can get an organised tour packages here from any of the tour agencies, rent a tuk-tuk or taxi, or rent your own moped to get up there. It’s on a hilltop so naturally offers panoramic views of Udaipur. Unfortunately, this is something I REALLY wanted to do, but couldn’t do, so please include it on your places to visit in Udaipur list and tell me what it was like! It’s open from 8 am to 6 pm.

Cost: 80 for foreigners/ 10 for locals

*Important note* You have to pay to enter the park that surrounds it.

Tour option: Half day tour to Monsoon Palace + Wild Life Sanctuary

6. Gulab Bagh and Zoo

This is the largest garden in Udaipur spreading over 100 acres, so if you like nature and beauty, this is a good place to visit in Udaipur. As a rose lover, this place will also delight you, there are LOTS of varieties of beautiful roses. Aside from the gardens, there is also a zoo on-site which is good for entertaining children. The zoo is open from 8.30am to 6 pm whereas the gardens are supposedly 24 hours.

Cost:   25 per person for Entry to the Garden/ 5 per person for Zoo Entry Fee/ 15 for Camera Fee (only for the zoo)

7. Udaipur Solar Observatory

Another spot I wanted to visit but didn’t get the chance to visit was the Udaipur Solar Observatory. (Well, I drove past it on the moped- does that count? :P ) It’s open from 10 am to 6 pm and there is no entrance fee. It’s regarded as the best solar observing site in Asia and since it’s on the lake, it’s probably best seen from afar.

8. Biological park

This is located just below the monsoon palace, and it’s the place I was saying you get charged to go into because you are going through it to get to the palace. (Or if someone knows different then tell me, but the guard insisted that’s what happens) It’s a zoological park filled with wildlife and plants galore. If you’re heading to the Monsoon Palace anyway, then I guess it’s worth a stop.

Cost: 300 for foreign tourists / 30 for local and there is a camera charge too

‍ 9. Markets

There are lots of chance to buy presents in Udaipur and there are lots of markets happening every day. I got myself my “famous” blue skirt in Udaipur for a couple of pounds. I say famous because you’ll notice I wear it a lot in my Indian travel photos . (I had a green skirt from home, but it ripped). Just wander around the main tourist area which is near the city palace and you'll naturally go by lots of markets.

10. Marvel Waterpark

Fancy something truly different whilst in Udaipur? Then add the Marvel Waterpark to your list of places to visit in Udaipur in two days. It’s cheap, cheerful and has very mixed reviews. Our plan was to go here, but we decided against it in the end, so I would love to know what people thought if they went.

I mean, for the price of 400 for adults and 250 for children, it’s not exactly a big loss if you hate it!

11. Lake Badi

When it comes to Udaipur tourist places, this one doesn't always make the list, but I don't understand why.

Without a doubt, my favourite lake in all of Udaipur. It’s quiet, beautiful, peaceful and you might want to spend all your time there. We visited twice and it’s a beautiful place to catch a sunset. I am so glad there aren’t many tourists here, because it truly feels like it’s just you (and the massive monkeys).

When you have a moped it’s easy to reach here. You can also “hike” above the lake to a viewing point, but I’ve only ever seen pictures on Instagram of this happening, so if you’ve done it, tell me!

12. Rent a moped and explore

Renting a moped is definitely the best way to see all that Udaipur has to offer. We decided to take ourselves well outside the city area on a day trip and see what other temples and views were on offer.

We visited Sas Bahu Temple and Shri Eklong Ji Temple, both of which were worth a drive. One temple was under construction and the other was totally abandoned and no way in, so we simply walked on top of it and looked in. Still worth exploring and seeing something different.

If you've got more than 2 days in Udaipur, then you can easily slow these places do and add other places to visit in Udaipur in 3 days. But, if you start your day early, then you can easily see all these awesome places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

Extra for 3 day itinerary in Udaipur

Day trip to kumbhalgarah fort.

You will see this advertised in all the tour agents in Udaipur, and it can be done as a full or half day trip. It’s a fabulous fort and it looks very interesting. We didn’t have time, and you would only be able to do it if you had 3 days in Udaipur.

Other Udaipur Travel tips and FAQ

How do you get to udaipur.

You can get to Udaipur via bus, plane or train.

Flights: You can get flights to Udaipur from all major airports, such as Mumbai and Delhi. Bradley and I flew from Mumbai and it cost around £35. It was only an hour flight, and I had enough of doing overnight train journeys, so it was totally worth it. From the airport, you can get an Uber to your hotel in Udaipur. Check Skyscanner for the best deals.

Train: You can get a train from all over the country to Udaipur. I recommend travelling in 2nd Class AC (although 3rd class AC is also doable, just no privacy). Buy your tickets at the station or a ticket agent to get the best price, and if a train is sold out online, then go to the train station as they typically have some seats left.

Bus: Buses are frequent around India and you can easily book a bus online with red bus. There is no need to print anything and you can track your bus which is quite convenient. Buses will be similar to a train price, if not cheaper.

When is the best time to visit Udaipur?

The best time to visit Udaipur is during the winter season. The temperature is more comfortable and it’s actually the peak tourist season for both locals and foreigners making their way through the cultural triangle. So, this makes the best months to visit as September, October, November, December, February and March.

How long should I stay in Udaipur?

Well this a two-day post, so naturally I would say two days it quite adequate, especially if you are on a strict timeline. You couldn’t see it all in a day, actually, a day would be wasteful because Udaipur is most beautiful when you explore outside of the city. You could easily stay here 3 days or more, depending on your itinerary. But India is a big country and if you’re taking it all on, then two days is where it’s at!

If you're looking for places to visit in Udaipur in 1 day, then I would recommend just choosing 4 things from this list and focusing on that.

ATMS in Udaipur

Udaipur has got a good variety of ATMs. If you use a Revolut card ( a travel card that gives you the best exchange rate on the market- so why not!?) then use the Bank of Baroda, as it doesn’t charge you for withdrawals. There is one or two in Udaipur. Most restaurants and hotels take card too and even the markets, but it’s best to have some small change for haggling or tuk-tuk fares.

Where to go after Udaipur

If you’re heading towards the cultural triangle, then I recommend hitting up Jodhpur next. It’s an easy bus ride away and there is a great guy in Udaipur who can organise buses and trains for the rest of your trip. He takes a 50 pence commission, so it’s worth the convenience, plus he can find you trains which are a nightmare to find anyway. Trains book up super quick. He’s a super friendly guy and the one we used, so I shan’t complain!

The bus he booked us to Jodhpur was super comfortable, clean and modern.

25 Amazing Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Jumping right into it, Udaipur is a gorgeous city that is still relatively small. This means you can get around in a tuk-tuk or walk most of the city. Udaipur was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1559 around a set of artificial lakes. The lakes dry up during summer but during the monsoon seasons they are filled to the brim and you can see boats twinkling and people celebrating festivals along the shorelines. There are some unique and interesting places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

Let me introduce the city by saying that I was surprised. I grew up in Delhi and Jaipur and those cities are filthy to boot. They are gorgeous but also ridiculously dirty. Udaipur though was shiny, clean and people were so nice. Maybe it’s because the city is still relatively small. The funniest thing was the ad for a water bottle company showing a camel drinking their water so kudos to whoever came up with that idea.

My mom grew up in Udaipur for some part of her childhood. It wasn’t a very famous destination 20 years ago and barely anyone that lived in India traveled to a city in the middle of nowhere for tourism. Now in 2020 it is a bustling spot and a city that I loved visiting. The trip was great in itself cause I hadn’t travelled alone with my mom in over 2 years. 1. Lake Pichola

This gorgeous lake is one of the most famous places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days, having delighted travelers like me for centuries now. It is surrounded on one side by lush green hills and on the other by the magnificent white walls of the City Palace and bathing ghats. To understand why this is such a huge attraction take a boat ride onto the lake from Rameshwar Ghat near the City Palace at sunset when the soft glow of the setting sun illuminates the waters and the lights of the palace are turned on. It is one of the most gorgeous views in Udaipur. 

2. City Palace

This thundering palace was constructed in 1559 by the king of Udaipur and is testament to the skills of the Rajputs. The architecture is a mixture of European, Chinese and Medieval styles with 11 different palaces inside the compound all constructed at different times throughout the centuries.

One of the rooms that really captured my attention is made completely out of crystallized glass in different colors and shines like a rainbow in the sunlight. It was mind blowing. The palace has extremely well curated museums and artifacts on display. Top tip: The best photo spot in the city is inside the palace in an inconspicuous room on the top floor with blue and green artwork on the wall.

3. Jag Niwas

The Lake Palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days and also one of the most famous wedding destinations in India. The palace was built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh and now has been converted into one of the most romantic hotels in the world. You can enjoy the architecture by either taking a boat ride around the palace or better yet have lunch at one of their restaurants. If you decide to stay here though you will enjoy an unparalleled stay surrounded by absolute beauty and luxury in one of most gorgeous palaces on Earth.

4. Fateh Sagar Lake

Located in the north-west end of Udaipur the blue waters of this lake are frequented by locals and tourists alike everyday. The lake has 3 islands with beautiful gardens that are easily accessible by boats all day. The most famous of these is the Nehru Park with the zoo. It has the cutest boat shaped restaurant and is an amazing picnic spot to enjoy the quiet nature amongst the trees with the stunning view of the city of Udaipur in the front. 

5. Sajjangarh Palace

One of my favorite places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days was the monsoon palace atop the Bansdara Mountain. You take a rickshaw to the foot of the mountain and then pay for the jeep ride to the top. The jeep goes through a winding road on the mountain with a birds eye view of Udaipur before emerging from the trees next to the palace. During monsoon when we went you can see the heavy clouds and the green hills that cocoon the city for miles in every direction. The best time to visit here is of course the monsoon and during the evening when everything looks cloudy and dreamy.

6. Eklingji Temple

A little north of Udaipur, this temple dedicated to the god of destruction, Shiva is one of the well-known temples of Udaipur. It was built almost 1200 years ago and has the double-storied pyramidal carved roof distinctive of that time. The main temple is a masterpiece carved out of stone and marble. It has a 50 feet tall four-faced idol of Shiva made out of black marble that is garlanded by a silver snake housed inside. The compound has 108 temples all dating back throughout the centuries that includes the only temple of the Lakulish sect in India. It is a wonder to walk amongst such an ancient site and marvel at the architecture.

7. Vintage Car Museum

As every history buff knows, the Maharajas of India were deeply fascinated by vintage cars and it was no different for the Maharanas of Mewar that collectively amassed a glorious collection of vintage cars over the decades. This impressive collection is on display inside the Mewar State Motor Garage where each vehicle has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. With their bright headlights peering in a semi circular shape in the courtyard this is one of the cutest and unique places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

8. Jaisamand Lake

This a quiet lake in the middle of the scenic Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary. The only sides you will hear are birds chirping away in the trees. This is the perfect place to infuse your heart with gratitude for nature and appreciate the beauty of the hills that are aplenty around Udaipur. There are 3 islands on the lake that are home to the tribes of Bhil Minas. The lake itself is thriving with marine wildlife. The gravity point for the lake is the 116 feet high marble bund that has its Shiva temples and cenotaphs. In the distance you can see the palaces of the Queens of Udaipur rising atop the hill. To visit here either take a boat ride or immerse yourself in the wildlife at the sanctuary.

9. Jag Mandir

This palace served as an entertainment grounds for the royal family wherein they hosted functions. On the island are the Gul Mahal which at one time has walls inlaid with rubies, Garden Courtyard, Bara Patharon ka Mahal, Zenana Mahal and Kunwar Pada ka Mahal. To get to the palace you will have to take the Bansi Ghat Jetty. If you are a Bond fanatic you will be thrilled to know that this palace was featured in Octopussy which made it world famous. 

10. Jagdish Temple

The impressive stone temple in the middle of Udaipur is a community pillar-stone and part of everyday life for the people.The temple honors Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. It has Indo-Aryan influences from the 17th century and is an architectural marvel. It has delicately carved pillars, intricately drawings chiseled on the ceiling and beautifully painted walls. The best time to visit here is for aarti when the crowd gathers and bells ring out in harmony throughout the city. The entrance is right next to the Badi Pol gate of the City Palace.

11. Saheliyon ki Bari

This gorgeous garden situated next to Fateh Sagar lake is the epitome of the love the king of Mewar had for his queen. He built Saheliyon ki Bari or Garden of the Lady Friends for his wife and her 48 maids that came with her after their marriage. The gardens have four beautifully carved pools. The lotus pool is the most stunning with marble elephants on its embankments. The pool at the heart of the gardens is adorned by stone umbrellas on all four sides and one in the middle. This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

12. Hathi Pol Bazaar

This market in Udaipur is known for its local handiwork and craftsmen. It is most famous for its traditional Pichwai and Phad paintings, Rajasthani miniature paintings, wooden handicrafts and Nagra slippers made of camel leather. I personally loved shopping here because they have a whole section just for chiffon sarees which the city is famous for. They have the most bright and color gorgeous Danka embroidery sarees that are to die for. This is definitely a must visit in the city.

13. Bada Bazaar

This is another marketplace that sells textiles, jewellery and Nagra slippers. They have rows and rows of shops selling sarees that are famous in the region. If you are looking for any local crafts to bring back home then this is another market that will satisfy whatever you are looking for. You can take a rickshaw between this market and Hathi Pol Bazaar for a full day of shopping. 

14. Bagore ki Haveli

This is a sandstone palace that is situated on the banks of Lake Pichola on the Gangori Ghat. The haveli is an example of the splendid craftsmanship of the local people. The architecture is gorgeous and the view from the roof is amazing. The inside of the haveli is adorned with some exceptional mirror work that is seen only in Rajasthan. The puppet museum and the wedding section which shows the different stages of a wedding are two of the cutest displays ever to catch my eye. If you are planning to go here make sure to stay for the Dharohar Dance Show at 7pm where the local dancers perform various dances that are part of the culture.  

15. Ahar Cenotaphs

This is the cremation grounds for the royal family of Mewar with a cenotaph built for each person that has been cremated here. There are 372 cenotaphs on the grounds with the largest 9 cenotaphs dedicated to the Maharajas of the state. The cenotaphs are stone umbrellas with delicately carved images of royal life. The monochromatic colors of the cenotaphs are a sobre homage to the kings, queens and their people who influenced and built this state over the centuries. This is one of the most important archaeological sites and places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. 

16. Jagat Niwas

This glowing white haveli is a converted boutique hotel. It is rated as one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days for food on their breathtaking lake side restaurant that looks directly onto Lake Pichola. I was not disappointed with either the food or the views. It is one of the most calming experiences to have piping hot Indian food on their soft cushions atop their balconies over the lake. You have your tiny little balcony all to yourself to enjoy lunch. For an even more impressive view, head over to the rooftop where you get a bird’s eye view of all around the area and one of the best photography places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. I very highly recommend you go here for a meal!

17. Sheesh Mahal

This open-air fine-dining restaurant is one of the best traditional Indian food restaurants that serves the local cuisine. Situated inside the Leela Palace you will be treated like royalty and experience true Rajasthani culture prepared atop open clay over next to your table. In the evening you have a clear view of the shining City Palace across the lake and the Taj Palace in the middle of the waters.

The daal baati choorma is the traditional food of the locals and I really recommend you try this because it is delicious. The soft cool breeze blows over the lake while you eat and the magical views of the city and Sajjangarh Palace glowing in the distance redefine the meaning of fine dining. 18. Shilpgram

Located at the foothills of the Aravali, Shilpgram is a craftsmen village that imitates a traditional village with clay constructed huts. Shilpgram provides employment to many local craftsmen and organizes festivals here on a regular basis. The open air Amphitheatre is used for performance by various artists. To immerse yourself into the culture and really understand how the people live, visit Shilpgram. 

19. Ranakpur

Ranakpur is a village that is home to one of the five holy places for the Jain community. The temple was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha to honor Adinathji. The main Sun Temple dedicated to the Sun God rises up as a force of white marble with embellished walls carved with paintings depicting warriors, nakshatras, horses and the sun. The walls in the temple will blow your mind with how intricately carved every surface is. The architecture is the same as found in the Dilwara temples of Mount Abu in our list.

20. Kumbhalgarh Fort

This magnificent fort lies in the Aravali hills built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century. This fort served as the last line of defense for the kingdom due to the hostile topography of the area and was used by the kings in times of danger. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the fort you can see the Parsvanath Temple, the Kumbha Palace and the birthplace of Maharana Pratap called Jhalia ka Malia near Pagda Pol. 

21. Haldighati

The historian in every one of us would rejoice at the chance to visit Haldighati where the famous Battle of Haldighati took place between Rana Pratap Singh of Mewar and Raja Man Singh of Amber in 1576. The ferocious battle is taught in school and lives on in the memories of the people. The mountain pass where this battle was found is now home to the Maharana Pratap National Museum dedicated as a memorial for this battle. 

22. Mount Abu

The only hill station in Rajasthan, Mount Abu used to be the summer retreats for the kings of Rajasthan. The Dilwara Temple is one of the holiest sites for the Jain community. It is a gorgeous white marble temple with carvings of gods and goddesses. There are an unbounded number of things you could do here – take a boat ride in the Nakki Lake, go trekking in the hills or immerse yourself in the wildlife in the Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary. 

23. Chittorgarh Fort

This fort was built by the Mauryan rulers in the 7th century and is a huge architectural marvel covering 700 acres next to the Gamberi River. The Padmini Palace and Rana Kumbha Palace are two of the famous structures inside. The Padmini Palace was the home of Queen Padmini whose beauty drove the neighbouring Muslim king to invade the city to capture her leading to her committed self-sacrifice by fire rather than live without her husband who died in battle. Bhimtal Tank and Gaumukh Reservoir are impressive water tanks that should be visited. This fort is the ultimate testament to the love and courage of the Rajputs. 

24. Karni Palace

One of my personal favorites, the Karni Palace in Bambora has been converted into a boutique luxury hotel where I had one of my best stays in India. The rooms have traditional wooden furniture and colored window murals. The palace has Ayurvedic spa treatment and dance performances by the local dancers with your dinner. The expansive gardens and marble pool provide the ultimate place to rest and recharge your energy. I went here with my entire family and absolutely loved the royal stay. 

25. Badi Lake

This lake is a gorgeous hiking and picnic spot in the heart of the Aravali Hills. The area is tranquil and the nature is refreshing without the crowds of the more popular lakes. You could take a swim and then lounge on its bank. At the top of the small hill adjacent to the lake you will find a breathtaking view of the city and a small stall selling oil fried Indian pakoras and Maggi to warm you up during the cloudy monsoon evenings.

Udaipur is such a unique city in India! I have seen it lots of times in Bollywood and I wish I could see it in person sometime soon!
