US and Mexico is “an important opportunity” for LaLiga
The LaLiga Summer Tour does not currently include fixtures involving Real Madrid or Barcelona , the league’s two most successful sides. However both Madrid and Barca have opted to arrange their own tours of the States, meaning that US-based fans will still get a chance to see them in action.

But if you really look at the demographic in general, this country is probably getting more diverse and multicultural by the day. … we feel that we have a lot to do, but that this territory specifically, and North America in general, is a huge growth market where we have really great cultural connection, language connection with, with the growing demographic in the country.”

LaLiga Summer Tour 2023 Mexico, United States
LaLiga has been dreaming about hosting regular season matches on this side of the world for a long time, but for now, having friendly games during the off-season is the only chance available.
The U.S. is a periodic destination in this context, but LaLiga has also decided to add a couple of games in México to the calendar this year. In fact, the tour starts there on Aug. 2.
The matches?
- Atlético de Madrid vs. Real Sociedad – Estadio BBVA, Monterrey – 9 p.m. ET
- Sevilla vs. Real Betis – Estadio Akron, Guadalajara – 11 p.m. ET
Both games are in 2026 World Cup stadiums and El Derbi Andaluz between Sevilla and Betis surely will bring special sauce, considering Tecatito Corona and local boy Andrés Guardado could clash against each other.

La Liga announces plans for summer tour of USA and Mexico
La Liga has announced plans for a first summer tour of the United States and Mexico beginning later this year.
The league’s latest development strategy is organised by Relevent Sports – one of the most influential privately-owned international football companies in the world.
OneFootball Videos
It will feature friendly matches between some of the division’s ‘legendary’ clubs.
However, it is understood that Real Madrid and Barcelona, who meet in El Clasico this weekend , are not expected to compete in the tour.
The tour is aimed at establishing a footprint of the Spanish top-flight division in key markets, including North America, and provide fans with an opportunity to watch some of the league’s best players and teams compete in their own backyard.
The games will take place in various cities across the United States and Mexico and are expected to attract a large number of fans from different parts of the country.
A statement from La Liga said: “The summer tour is part of La Liga and its clubs’ strategy to grow the Spanish Professional League’s footprint in the United States and Mexico.
“The tour will make its first stop in 2023 in the United States and Mexico. It will continue the strategy to develop and grow the league, its clubs, and competitions in North American markets.
“The United States and Mexico represent an important opportunity for La Liga and its clubs in brand and business development, especially in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup in 2016.”
The 2023 summer tour will take place during the first week of August, and the teams and cities where the friendly matches will take place will be announced in the coming days.
La Liga is not alone in its quest to grow viewership in the American market. Premier League club Manchester United have also confirmed that their pre-season tour scheduled for later this year will take place in the US.
It will be the first time the Red Devils prepare for a new campaign in North America since the summer of 2018, when they visited five US states, including Arizona, California and Miami.

LaLiga US tour excludes Barca, Real Madrid due to Super League
by Kyle Fansler April 13, 2023
LaLiga is organizing a summer tour in the US and Mexico that features four teams. Notably, that set of four teams does not include the two most popular teams in the Spanish top flight, Real Madrid and Barcelona . Instead, the four clubs traveling with LaLiga are Atletico Madrid , Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
An announcement from LaLiga North America stated that those four teams will play a total of four games. Intercity rivals Sevilla and Betis play one another in Guadalajara on Aug. 2. On the same day in Monterrey, Atletico Madrid takes on Real Sociedad. Three days later, there is a doubleheader in San Francisco at Oracle Park, the home of MLB’s San Francisco Giants. Atletico faces Sevilla, and Sociedad battles Betis.
The set of games are a bid to boost the growing presence of LaLiga in North America . However, there may be concerns over how effective this competition can be without titans like Barcelona and Real Madrid. Right now, LaLiga and those two clubs have a tense relationship. Both still are pushing to make the European Super League happen, which is a concept LaLiga is firmly against.
In a LaLiga statement in February 2023, league president Javier Tebas said the Super League will wreak havoc on domestic leagues.
“Domestic leagues run the risk of disappearing with a Super League format,” Tebas said . “If their model is based on ‘several divisions’, with an elite group ensuring they stay in the top flight, their model is not 100 percent open as they falsely promise.”
LaLiga US tour goes against Barcelona and Real Madrid
The LaLiga tour going on without Barcelona and Real Madrid could damage the popularity of the games, particularly in the United States. While there are representatives from El Tri on Real Betis and Sevilla, these four clubs do not have the same impact of UEFA Champions League-winning clubs such as Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Even worse, both clubs are planning games in the United States for the summer of 2023. That includes a potential third Clásico in the United States . Real Madrid played Barcelona in Miami in 2017, then they played again in Las Vegas this past summer. Both of those games, which were fairly independent from LaLiga, were massive successes . The Miami game brought in 1.7 million viewers on ESPN .
TV coverage and tickets for the LaLiga tour across the US and Mexico are still not available. Yet, based on LaLiga North America’s deal with Relevent, LaLiga now has production studios in Mexico, and the league has a media rights deal with ESPN, where most of the LaLiga TV schedule features on ESPN+.
The fact that Real Madrid and Barcelona are not involved in LaLiga’s official summer tour of the United States is a concern. With LaLiga battling against the popularity of the Premier League and Liga MX in the United States, LaLiga needs a united front. Instead, the split between the top two clubs and LaLiga is a detriment to what could have been so much bigger and better.

La Liga set to play first game in United States in new marketing deal
A regular-season La Liga game is set to be played in the United States for the first time after the league reached an agreement with Relevent, the organizers of the International Champions Cup, on a 15-year joint venture for promotion in North America.
Although the date and location are yet to be determined, organizers expect the game to be this season and it would mark the first time La Liga has played outside of Europe. It would also mean that one team would have to give up a home game in Spain in a stark departure from tradition.
"This extraordinary joint venture is the next giant leap in growing soccer's popularity in North America," Relevent chairman and owner Stephen Ross said. "This unique relationship will create new opportunities for millions of North American soccer fans to experience the most passionate, exciting, and highest level of soccer in the world."
Ross also owns the Miami Dolphins and is a part owner of their home, Hard Rock Stadium, which would make the Florida city the frontrunner to host the event.
"It's not hard to figure out where we would want it to be based on our ownership with Stephen Ross," Relevent CEO Danny Sillman said via telephone. "That part isn't too difficult to figure out. [The match will be held] much sooner than the public is expecting."
Relevent executive chairman Charlie Stillitano told the Washington Post that a game has been discussed for the second half of the upcoming 2018-19 season. Stillitano also said the game would have to include at least one of Real Madrid , Barcelona , Atletico Madrid , Sevilla or Valencia , with a preference for the first three.
"It's a 15-year deal and we want to start it out right," Stillitano said on ESPN FC TV. "Obviously we have to have a recognizable team. So I think it's critical that we have one of the top five or six teams.
"We are working with [La Liga] right now and nothing's been decided. We just have to find the right game in the calendar and we want to do it this season. The other part will be that we want it to be that there's not a cup game in the [week between] so there's a little bit of rest for the players.
"We're trying to respect the game, we are trying to respect the players. We know it's a new things and obviously in Europe, outside of the Champions League, you are not travelling great distances and this would be a big trip without question."
Barcelona and Real Madrid played each other for the first time outside of Europe last year at Hard Rock Stadium as part of Relevent's International Champions Cup, a summer tournament that the clubs use for preseason. Real Madrid then returned to the Dolphins' stadium last month to face Manchester United .
Moving any league game outside teams' own countries to the U.S. would need to be approved at least by both FIFA and its North American regional body CONCACAF, and the U.S. Soccer Federation would also be involved.
The announcement sparked debate over whether the Premier League could renew plans for an experimental "39th game" to be played abroad, but the English league, contacted by ESPN FC, said there are currently no plans to follow La Liga's lead.
The promotional venture, called LaLiga North America, will represent the league in the United States and Canada in all business and development activities. The organization will support the league's growth through the establishment of youth academies, development of youth soccer coaches, marketing agreements, consumer activations, and exhibition matches.
LaLiga North America will be led by Boris Gartner, formerly the head of strategy at Televisa. He also has executive experience with Univision.
"We're devoted to growing the passion for soccer around the world," La Liga president Javier Tebas said. "This groundbreaking agreement is certain to give a major impulse to the popularity of the beautiful game in the U.S. and Canada. Relevent has filled stadiums across the U.S. with the International Champions Cup, [and] we're thrilled to partner with them on a joint mission to grow soccer in North America."
LaLiga North America will also handle the sale of media rights on the continent once the deal with beIN Sports expires at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.
Sillman said that while there will be efforts on multiple fronts to increase revenue and build awareness, the media rights will be the biggest revenue-driver. He said La Liga is already the second-largest soccer league in terms of media rights, behind the Premier League.
"The [North America] media rights now sell for about $120 million to beIN, and if you look at the upticks of the other leagues -- the EPL doubled, the Champions League doubled -- even if we grew 15 to 20 percent a year, you're talking [a total of] $2 billion just in media value," Sillman said.
Sillman said Tebas has been working on the next media rights deal for the last six to 12 months, so the intention is to sustain that effort.
"Obviously, they want to maximize their distribution, so we'll be moving very quickly with Tebas, getting in the marketplace, and understanding what the broadcast and streaming partners are looking for," Sillman said. "La Liga works with Facebook in India and a bunch of the digital players as well. We'll start to figure out the best way to carve up the rights from the digital and live broadcast in Spanish, English, and French for the U.S. and Canada and start to move fairly fast on putting a strategy together."
The process of joining forces with La Liga began 18 months ago with an extensive proposal process, Sillman said. Relevent was chosen in February in part because it had experience working with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid through the International Champions Cup.
The particulars of the joint venture were finalized in the last few days.
"Tebas saw what we did with El Clasico [in Miami] as a part of our ICC tournament last summer," Sillman said. "Our ability to tell the story of the history behind the clubs, the league, and the matchups really [helped] build a great spectacle for American fans.
"The [regular-season] match will be a big piece of the joint venture as well. With the precedent set for American sports to be exported all over the world -- MLS going to Japan , the NBA in Europe, the NFL in Mexico and Europe -- there still hasn't been anything with European football in the States, so it's going to be really exciting from that standpoint to import the games to American fans and give them a chance to see it up close for those who may not get the chance to see it in Spain."
Spain's players' association protested the announcement, saying players were not consulted ahead of time and calling it was unfair for fans in Spain.
"Players are not a bargaining chip that can be used in businesses that only benefit third parties,'' association president David Aganzo said.
LaLiga could play fixtures in U.S. as soon as 2025-26 - Tebas
LaLiga president Javier Tebas said the Spanish league is hopeful of playing competitive games in the United States as soon as the 2025-26 season.
Tebas originally planned to stage a league match involving Barcelona and Girona at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium in 2018 but was met with opposition from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and FIFA, among others.
- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
However, a recent lawsuit involving Relevent Sports Group, the company involved in moving LaLiga matches to the U.S., has reopened the possibility of it happening in the future.
"I don't know when, but this time LaLiga will play official games abroad," Tebas told Expansión . "I think it could be from the 2025-26 season.
"An official game in the United States would strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second [biggest] for LaLiga after Spain.
"Other really competitive leagues are coming, so we can't always do the same thing. They would jump ahead of us."
Sources at LaLiga told ESPN that while the prospect of taking a game abroad is closer than in the past, Tebas' comments do not constitute an official announcement.
Tebas' renewed optimism comes on the back of a potentially landmark case involving Relevent, FIFA and the U.S courts.
The Supreme Court recently allowed Relevent's antitrust lawsuit to go forward against FIFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation over the world governing body's policy of not permitting a country to host league matches involving teams from other countries.
The high court order leaves in place a federal appeals court ruling in favour of Relevent, controlled by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
Relevent sued in 2019 after FIFA disrupted its plan to host Barcelona and Girona at Miami Gardens, Florida, and the USSF refused permission to sanction a league match between two teams from Ecuador.
A district court dismissed the lawsuit, but a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously reinstated it. The Biden administration weighed in on Relevent's side at the Supreme Court.
Relevent and FIFA reached an agreement this month to drop FIFA from the suit, a deal that the USSF wants to review and that has not yet been approved by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni.
Relevent organises and promotes soccer events in the U.S. Its portfolio includes a 50-50 joint venture with Spain's LaLiga in North America that covers the league's media rights, sponsorship assets, fan events and grassroots efforts.
It has organised preseason friendlies and tournaments in the U.S. at the same time as seeking to stage matches from FIFA-affiliated teams in LaLiga and similarly situated leagues.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
La Liga president Javier Tebas wants league matches in U.S. by 2025-26 season
La Liga president Javier Tebas insists league matches will be played abroad with his aim for games to be staged in the United States from the 2025-26 season.
The possibility of playing domestic league fixtures abroad has increased after FIFA was dropped from a landmark lawsuit by the U.S. events promoter Relevent , who in 2018 were denied in their attempts to take a fixture between Girona and Barcelona in La Liga to Miami.
Relevent, founded by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, accused FIFA ’s directive, issued in 2018, of guiding that domestic games should be played in their home territory as acting as a monopoly and preventing fair competition.
FIFA and Relevent settled on their case without prejudice earlier this month , meaning Relevent reserve the right to reopen their litigation should FIFA not come up with a satisfactory reconsideration of their position.
Why European football matches might finally be coming to the U.S.
“I think it could be in the 2025-26 season, but La Liga will play official matches abroad,” La Liga president Tebas told Spanish newspaper Expansion .
“An official match in the U.S. will strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second market for La Liga after Spain.”
Tebas said other major leagues were also trying to move domestic fixtures abroad: “Other very competitive leagues are coming so we cannot always do the same thing, but we cannot allow them to overtake us.”
Tebas also added that La Liga had no plans to introduce goal-line technology following a ‘ghost goal’ from Barcelona ’s Lamine Yamal in Real Madrid’s victory in Sunday night’s El Clasico.
Yamal’s shot was adjudged not to have crossed the goal line, with VAR officials unable to conclusively determine that the ball had gone in from the replays available.

La liga president predicts matches in the u.s. by 2025-26 season, share this article.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has stated his belief that his league will stage official matches in the U.S. as soon as the 2025-26 season.
Tebas appears to believe that FIFA and U.S. Soccer will ultimately lose an ongoing lawsuit that challenges a ban on teams from staging league matches abroad.
“I think it could be in the 2025-26 season, but La Liga will play official matches abroad,” Tebas told Spanish newspaper Expansion .
“An official match in the U.S. will strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second market for La Liga after Spain.”
Tebas said he expects La Liga will not be the only league to try and hold matches abroad.
“Other very competitive leagues are coming so we cannot always do the same thing, but we cannot allow them to overtake us,” Tebas said.
The La Liga president conducted the interview the same week that the U.S. Supreme Court said it would allow an antitrust lawsuit from soccer promoter Relevent Sports to move forward.
Relevent originally filed the lawsuit in 2019 after U.S. Soccer refused to sanction a regular-season match between Girona and Barcelona that was set to take place in Miami.
Earlier this month, Relevent and FIFA reached an agreement to drop FIFA from the lawsuit, leaving U.S. Soccer as the lone defendant. Though the agreement hasn’t been approved by a judge, it appears to be another step toward FIFA ending its global ban on teams playing official league matches abroad.
“FIFA and Relevent have agreed to resolve this matter as it concerns FIFA, pending FIFA’s consideration of changes to existing FIFA policies with respect to playing official season games outside of a league’s home territory,” FIFA said in a statement. “FIFA has not admitted any liability and continues to deny the legal claims alleged in Relevent’s complaint.”

Where to watch El Clasico: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona live stream, TV channel, odds, start time, what to know
Fresh of a champions league week where real madrid advanced and barcelona went hope it's two teams heading opposite ways.
Real Madrid can't officially win La Liga in Sunday's El Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday, but they can all but secure the title after Barca won it last season. Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League while Los Blancos bested Manchester City to advance to the last four of the tournament. If Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid emerge with a victory, there is a good chance that they'll win La Liga by double digits over Barcelona for the second time in the past three years, while if Barcelona wins, it doesn't particularly change anything.
That's the state of these two teams. It shows how far the rivalry has gone as this season will see Xavi Hernandez depart Barcelona at the end of the season, the club likely not secure a trophy for the first time since 2019-20, and plenty of holes in the roster to fill but with limited funds to fill them. Meanwhile in Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti has seen his contract extended, they're closing in on another La Liga title and could also be adding Kylian Mbappe during the summer.

With the ability to pursue almost any player that they'd like not only has this period seen the gap widen between Barcelona and Real Madrid but the stage is set for it to only get wider. Clasico's are supposed to be affairs full of drama, a time where the fate of the league hangs in the balance, but this one doesn't have any of that. If Barcelona can't figure out their managerial situation for next season and see more improvement from their young players, there will be a mountain to climb.
How to watch and odds
- Date : Sunday, April 21 | Time : 3 p.m. ET

- Odds: Real Madrid - 120; Draw +220; Barcelona +300
- Live updates: El Clasico
Mbappe knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League was already a poetic moment, full of foreshadowing of what could be coming if he denies Barcelona more silverware with Madrid. The gap between the two clubs hasn't been this drastic since the early 2000's and for fans around the world, hopefully, it isn't this wide for much longer. Things are better with stakes in a Clasico which is a beautiful rivalry showcasing the best of what world soccer has to offer. Gone are the days of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo squaring off as giants of the soccer world but to move things forward, Barcelona needs to figure out who their next era will be built around.

With Vinicius Junior , Jude Bellingham , Rodrygo , and Endrick on the way, Madrid are poised for success even without Mbappe while Barcelona's future is much bleaker. Their hopes are on the shoulders of 16-year-old Lamine Yamal who while he seems like a generational talent at his current age, what if things don't pan out? Not being able to spend money means a stronger reliance on the academy and that can produce inconsistent results growing the gap between the clubs. This Clasico showcases just how important the upcoming summer is for the balance of La Liga moving forward.
