For students in our English Language Centre or customized programs from May to August, you'll have the unique opportunity of living on a Canadian university campus.

Living in UVic's dormitories is a great experience because everything that you need—classrooms, cafeterias, pubs, a movie theatre, a travel agency and many more facilities—are just a short walk from your room. You’ll be living with your classmates as well as Canadian Cultural Assistants, giving you an opportunity to practice English while learning about many other cultures.

The UVic campus is a 20 minute bus ride to downtown Victoria, making it easy for you to enjoy our beautiful city.

An upstate sicko secretly recorded women and girls using the bathroom in the Putnam County park where he worked for 20 years, federal authorities said.

John Towers, 54, of Mahopac, allegedly planted hidden cameras in the ladies room of the public park — which authorities refused to identify — to record women and young girls in various stages of undress, according to a Manhattan federal complaint.

Towers had 10 spy cameras in the Locust Hill Road home he shares with his dad, including three that looked like ballpoint pens, authorities said.

Investigators also recovered a hard drive with more than 800 videos of women and girls using a bathroom — about 78 of which had file names including the misspelled term “yung,” prosecutors alleged.

“This is quite shocking — it’s like something you would see on ‘Law & Order,’ not something you would expect to happen here, in this idyllic setting,” one Putnam County mother of two told The Post.

The woman, who asked for anonymity, slammed authorities for refusing to identify the park, calling it “disturbing.”

“What is the reason for keeping that information from parents?” she fumed.

“I feel we have the right to know.”

The US Attorney’s office; the Putnam County District Attorney’s office, and the Putnam County Sheriff’s office all refused to reveal the name of the green space — which they described as a privately-owned, public park — Tucker allegedly stalked.

It is not known if the suspect worked at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, which includes a privately-owned 3,800-acre area. The land was purchased in 1991 by a conservation group and made into an extension of the state park.

The feds would not address why they got involved or if they found and notified unsuspecting victims.

Towers, who worked at the unnamed park from 2004 until March, was out on bail on child porn possession charges when he was collared on the federal charges, authorities said.

The feds believe the hidden cameras were in the bathroom from at least July 24, 2018 up to Dec. 9, 2019.

“John Towers’s alleged disturbing conduct violated the public’s trust by placing hidden cameras in a public bathroom and using those cameras to capture sexually explicit images of children,” US Attorney Damian Williams said after the complaint was unsealed last week.

Towers is charged in the federal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 30 years, and possession of child pornography, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. 

Authorities were hot on the trail of Towers beginning in February.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation after getting a tip that a local possessed images of child sex abuse.

Towers had DVDs containing video files he downloaded from the internet depicting prepubescent minors engaging in sexual activity, the feds said. “He was taking his own videos and downloading others,” said Nicholas Biase, spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office.

He was arrested and charged in Carmel Town Court with two counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child under the age of 17, three counts of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, the documents said.

Anyone who may have relevant information regarding Towers is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324).

Towers’ father, Donald, hung up the phone on a Post reporter seeking comment.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris announced today that she will embark on a nationwide Economic Opportunity Tour with a series of events focused on investing in communities, building wealth, and ensuring every American has the freedom to thrive. The Vice President’s tour will take her back to several states across the country as she highlights how the Biden-Harris Administration has built economic opportunity and delivered for the American people. The Economic Opportunity Tour will kick off with a moderated conversation in Atlanta, GA on April 29 and an event in Detroit, MI during the following week. Additional dates and locations will be announced soon.

“President Biden and I are committed to creating an economy in which every person has the freedom to thrive. That is why we have taken historic steps to advance economic opportunity by increasing access to capital, investing in small businesses, addressing housing costs, forgiving student loans and medical debt, investing in infrastructure, and championing additional policies that put money in people’s pockets and build wealth,” said Vice President Harris.   “Our economic approach has delivered great progress, and we will continue to invest in you, your family, and your future.”

During the Vice President’s Economic Opportunity Tour, she will highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration has delivered historic investments that have supported communities and helped people thrive. This includes making unprecedented investments in small businesses and achieving the fastest creation of Black-owned small businesses in more than 30 years, creating a record number of jobs, increasing access to capital for underserved communities, investing in infrastructure, cutting the price of insulin and expanding access to health care, erasing medical debt, forgiving more student loan debt than any administration in history and boosting investments in education, making housing more affordable, lowering child care costs, and increasing the wealth of American families. Vice President Harris will also outline additional steps that she and President Biden are taking to expand this work. She will be joined on the tour by Administration officials, members of Congress, local leaders, and other special guests.

The Vice President’s tour is a continuation of her nonstop travel to communities across the country. She has made more than 35 trips to 16 states since the beginning of 2024. This includes consistent travel to meet with small business owners and entrepreneurs in underserved communities to discuss challenges and opportunities they face. In March, she traveled to Black Wall Street in Durham, NC to announce $32 million in funds to support historically underserved entrepreneurs. She began the year in Las Vegas, NV where she announced an SBA rule that will ensure millions of Americans who have served time are eligible for SBA loan programs that help individuals start and run small businesses.

The Vice President has long been focused on ensuring that minority, rural, and low-income communities have the capital and resources they need to thrive and support small businesses. Last year, she announced that Treasury’s CDFI Fund has awarded over $1.73 billion in grants to 603 Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) across the country. In 2022, the Vice President also announced a first-of-its-kind public-private sector initiative — the Economic Opportunity Coalition (EOC) — that is a historic public-private partnership of more than 20 private sector organizations that will invest tens of billions of dollars to create opportunity and grow wealth in historically underserved communities. The EOC has already surpassed over $1 billion in increased member company deposits into community finance institutions. As a Senator, the Vice President partnered with key Congressional stakeholders to secure a transformative $12 billion investment for CDFIs and MDIs in December 2020. Since that time, she has worked to ensure these programs are as successful as possible.
