The Best Destinations for a Cruise in Iceland

Explore Iceland’s volcanic Westman Islands with ease via ship.

On a recent circumnavigation cruise aboard Viking Cruises’ 930-passenger Viking Sky around Iceland in July, my husband and I spent our time exploring thundering waterfalls, glaciers, bubbling earth, and volcanic landscapes, sights that had us wondering whether we had arrived on another planet.

While some of these same destinations are accessible on or off Iceland’s 828-mile Ring Road that circles much of the island, there are some notable advantages to exploring Iceland by sea. A cruise offers the same views of the shore that the Vikings had, a striking and unparalleled vantage point from which to observe Iceland’s rugged coastline and travel along its stunningly beautiful fjords.

Cruise ships also make itinerary planning a breeze and bring passengers to certain destinations that are unreachable by land; in addition, many of these vessels pack on the luxuries—such as the cushy accommodations, delicious food, included wine pours, and spa with warm hydrotherapy pool and invigorating snow room that we experienced with Viking. And you will still get plenty of time off the ship during a wide variety of shore excursions that bring passengers to Iceland’s famed hot springs , give them the opportunity to ride Icelandic horses, or provide Zodiac inflatable rafts for a more up-close-and-personal look at the unique shoreline. Added bonus: You have a good chance of spotting small minke and humpback whales right from your ship.

While COVID-19 requirements are a moving target, at press time, Iceland’s protocols for U.S. travelers required vaccinated visitors to present a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of departure to Iceland (unvaccinated visitors must be double-tested on arrival with a five-day quarantine in between tests). Cruise lines are requiring all guests and crew to be vaccinated . On our ship, we also underwent daily testing for COVID-19, the spit tests processed in the ship’s full-service lab. But requirements may change, so cruise passengers should familiarize themselves with the latest.

Here are our recommendations for some of the best places to visit on an Iceland cruise, what to see and do in port, and cruise lines that can get you there.

The Westfjords

On one-week itineraries with lines such as Viking and Windstar , you will likely visit the pretty little fishing town of Isafjordur , in Iceland’s northwest corner. It’s surrounded by water on three sides and a mountain on the other. If you stick around town, you’ll be rewarded with views of wooden homes and fishing boats in the harbor and have the opportunity to paddle the fjord via kayak for views that include snow-covered peaks. We highly recommended making a stop for a flight at the only brewery in the Westfjords, family-owned Dokkan Brugghús , where they use volcanic purified water to create their pales, lagers, stouts, and IPAs.

If you’re a bird-watcher, your must-do activity in the Westfjords will be spotting Atlantic puffins, which you can view close-up via Zodiac and on small Vigur Island. More than half the Atlantic puffin species breeds in Iceland, and the Westfjords is a prime bird-spotting destination.

Expedition ships operated by companies such as Lindblad Expeditions—National Geographic and luxury line Crystal Cruises , with its 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor , go farther afield in Iceland’s mostly wild western region. You may have the opportunity, for instance, to get up close to the large Latrabjarg Cliffs, home to puffins, gannets, guillemots, and numerous other birds.

The Far North

Cruise lines such as Viking, Hurtigruten , Ponant , Silversea , and Norwegian Cruise Line that venture further north in Iceland will likely bring you either to the northern college town of Akureyri or Húsavík, one of Iceland’s oldest settlements—first occupied about 1,200 years ago and a whale-watching capital. From both, you can head off on a shore excursion to see the north’s most striking inland sights: The 100-foot-wide Godafoss (or Waterfall of the Gods) and Lake Mývatn, with such geothermal features as bumbling fumaroles, steam vents, and eye-catching volcanic rock formations.

Your ship may also call at Siglufjordur, Iceland’s northernmost town and considered the island’s herring capital; you can learn all about the fishing industry at the herring museum there. Silversea and Crystal Cruises make this stop with their expedition ships.

The Arctic Circle

Grimsey Island is Iceland’s only landmass within the Arctic Circle.

If you’re sailing north with Viking and other lines, you’ll likely cross into the Arctic Circle (the theoretical line that circles the globe at about 66.5 degrees north of the equator), an event that can come to pass without passengers even realizing because it occurs at sea—but most lines that cross will provide a certificate signed by the captain of your ship to prove you’ve done it.

Some cruise itineraries, including those offered by Hurtigruten, Ponant, and Crystal, go even further, taking passengers to Grimsey Island, above the Arctic Circle and only accessible by boat. It’s Iceland’s only landmass that touches Arctic territory. On shore you may meet local fishermen and hang out with seabirds on the bluffs—the brag-worthy rare sighting here is a long-tailed duck known as a dovekie or “little auk.”

The Eastfjords

The less-visited Seydisfjordur is one of the most picturesque villages in Iceland.

Iceland has 109 fjords and at the head of an impressive 11-mile waterway in eastern Iceland, past cliffs, snow-capped peaks, small waterfalls, and startlingly green moss-covered hills, is the less-visited Seydisfjordur. It has a population of about 700 and is home to one of the most picturesque villages in Iceland.

Here, perfect wooden homes are designed in Nordic-style and painted in pretty primary and pastel colors—the place has a magical quality and is extremely photogenic. Excursions with Viking bring travelers up into the surrounding mountains to villages where locals will regale visitors with stories about elves.

The Westman Islands

Visiting Iceland’s Westman Islands is another cruise-ship perk.

Another ship-exploration bonus offered by lines such as Ponant, Windstar, Hurtigruten, and Seabourn is easy access in the south to Heimaey, the only populated destination in Iceland’s Westman Islands and a small fishing town that lost about 50 percent of its buildings to lava and ash in 1973 when nearby Edfell volcano erupted. (Most residents safely evacuated to the mainland.) From here passengers will also be able to view the Westman Islands’ 5,000-year-old Helgafell volcano. The island of 4,000 people also boasts a summer population of some 8 million puffins. While you’re in the neighborhood, catch views of Surtsey, Iceland’s newest island, which rose from the sea in the 1960s and is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s home to 89 bird species and 335 invertebrates.

Cruises in Iceland typically range from seven days to two weeks, and from budget sailings from as low as $1,406 per person (based on double occupancy), for 10 days on Norwegian Star between Reykjavík and London, to over-the-top luxury and expedition ships roundtrip from Reykjavík, starting at about $5,100 per person—and into five figures for suites.

What passengers will experience during their sailing, as we did during our cruise, is that with so much of Iceland’s history, identity, and culture intrinsically connected to the water, visiting by ship truly adds to the experience.

Circumnavigating Iceland

Your Iceland expedition cruise starts in Reykjavík, a city full of art, culture, and history. Visit Laugavegur, the main shopping street, then head toward the striking Hallgrímskirkja Church. You could also explore the galleries and museums dotted around the city.

Gateway to spectacular Snæfellsnes

Time has stood still at Stykkishólmur, the small fishing town in Breiðafjörður bay. Here, the colorful houses stand in contrast to the distant mountains.

Nearby, you’ll find Snæfellsnes Peninsula National Park, with the ice-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano at the peninsula’s western tip. It’s nicknamed 'Little Iceland', for its wide variety of volcanic landscapes.

At the national park, visit Djúpalónssandur's black-sand beach and the Lóndrangar basalt cliffs. Ride a snowcat to the top of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, or take a guided coastal hike with a glacial cave tour.

A stunning beach, waterfalls, and superb birdwatching

Patreksfjörður is unforgettably beautiful. Learn about the fishing traditions in Europe’s westernmost village. You can even enjoy a dip in the town’s outdoor pool, which features wonderful fjord views.

Explore the surrounding area on a hike through the fjords or visit Rauðasandur beach and see seals. You can also join a tour to Dynjandi waterfalls. These are six combined falls that, together, comprise the largest and most spectacular in the Westfjords.

Birdwatchers shouldn’t miss a visit to Látrabjarg, where puffins, northern gannets, guillemots, and razorbills cling to Europe’s largest bird cliff.

Explore Iceland, expedition-style.

One of the best things about expedition cruising is the feeling of freedom. We plan to spend the day in Iceland’s northwestern region, but as conditions can vary, we won't know exactly what's in store until the day itself. Rest assured, your Captain and expedition team will find the best opportunities for adventure.

We may take you ashore in our small boats (RIBs) for a hike, swim, or beach clean-up. Or perhaps we’ll launch our kayaks to explore a pretty cove. Be ready for anything!

Don’t forget, you can also join onboard lectures, visit the Science Center, get tips from our professional photographer, or soak in a hot tub!

The history of the herring entrepreneurs

There is an eerie charm about the remote village of Djúpavík, at the edge of the Westfjords. A vast abandoned herring factory contrasts with a stunning rural setting. A guided tour of the old herring factory should not be missed.

Explore these magical surroundings on foot and take a short and invigorating hike to the waterfall just above the old factory.

Explore Akureyri and see volcanic moonscapes.

Today we cruise along Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, to Akureyri, Iceland's northern capital. It’s a prime area to see humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises.

Stroll the interesting streets of Akureyri, which feature charming, colorful houses. Learn about the city’s history at the Akureyri Museum and visit Norðurslóð (Into the Arctic), a museum dedicated to Iceland’s settlement, culture, and daily life.

Further inland, visit the picturesque Goðafoss (‘God’s Waterfall’), where turquoise waters pound against black rocks. You can also seek out eider ducks and Harlequin ducks at Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland’s most active volcanic areas.

Cross the Arctic Circle and see Atlantic puffins.

Grímsey is steeped in folklore, including tales of the island’s first settler, Grímur. This remote and windswept island is home to just 60 people and is renowned for its Atlantic Puffin colonies.

Grímsey may be best known for its proximity to the Arctic Circle, which cuts across the island—the only part of Iceland to do so. You’ll have the opportunity to step across that line, hopping over to the Arctic and back.

Hike to the Orbis et Globus sculpture, a huge concrete sphere that is repositioned each year to fit the northward movement of the Arctic Circle. In fact, by 2050, Grímsey will lie outside the Arctic!

Iceland's best whale-watching spot

Today, you will discover Húsavík, a fascinating town that is one of the best places in the world for whale-watching.

Húsavík looks out over Skjálfandi Bay, a hotspot for humpback and minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbor porpoises—the elusive blue whale even makes appearances here. If you’re lucky, you might see one or more of these giants at sea. Learn more about them at Húsavík’s Whale Museum.

You can also enjoy the geothermal waters at Geosea, which overlooks Skjálfandi bay, and pep yourself up with a beer at the local microbrewery.

Local folklore and staggering natural beauty

Your Iceland cruise continues to Bakkagerði, a tiny settlement off the beaten track. According to folklore, Bakkagerði is inhabited by a large population of local land spirits or elves, known as huldufólk (meaning 'hidden people').

This popular hiking area features lush valleys and gorgeous scenery among colorful rhyolite rocks. The coastal cliffs are home to fulmars, kittiwakes, eider ducks, and puffins. We may also visit the Atlantic puffin colony on Hafnarhólmi, a true gem for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.

Discover the town that defied a volcano

Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands, off the Iceland’s southern coast. It has a fascinating history and still bears the scars of the powerful 1973 volcanic eruption that nearly destroyed the island.

Visit Eldheimar, a museum that features an excavated home frozen in time, and learn more about the eruption and its aftermath. You could also take a hike to find puffins at Stórhöfði, where nearly 8 million of them nest every summer. Don’t pass up the chance to climb Mount Eldfell to the volcano’s summit, where you’ll have incredible views of the town below.

Explore Reykjavík at your leisure

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

I pride myself on my ability to thoroughly prepare for a trip without overpacking, which means I’ve already started on my packing list. After all, in my two decades of cruising, I’ve learned a thing or two about what you’ll need once aboard the ship. From comfortable shoes to a waterproof phone case , here are 17 cruise essentials in my Amazon cart that would come in handy on your next trip, too.

My brother and I will be sharing a room on our upcoming trip, so an extension cord is especially vital to lessen sibling bickering (yes, even as grown adults). My goal when packing shoes for a cruise is to limit myself to just a few comfortable pairs, which means versatility is key. While these sandals are a newer style, Dolce Vita is one of my go-to brands for cute but comfortable footwear, so I feel confident ordering them for my trip. Plus, these sandals feature a cushioned platform bottom for added support and a strap on the back, meaning my feet won’t slide around while walking around the ship.

A cruise isn’t just about your destination — it’s about the amenities you’ll experience once aboard. Traveling by plane means sitting in a cramped row, but on a cruise you’ll be sailing to different stops while sitting poolside. A hat is essential to protect your scalp from strong UV rays and shield your eyes from the sun. I prefer to pack a straw hat that feels stylish in addition to functional like this one from Volilipex.

I’ll be driving to the cruise port for my trip this summer, which means I don’t have to worry about suitcase restrictions or weight limits. Yet, I’m still a sucker for a space-saving solution. This reversible swimsuit is the perfect multitasking piece for your next vacation. Once you wear it to the pool or beach, you can hand wash it in your shower and turn it around the other way — no one will suspect you’re actually re-wearing the same suit.

Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Standard Mouth Water Bottle

Cruises are known for their all-inclusive atmosphere, and they really do a good job of providing anything you could need aboard the ship in my experience. However, that doesn’t mean you should leave your reusable water bottle behind. You’ll still need it when you deport the ship for an excursion, and trust me you’ll be thanking yourself for bringing it with you to the cruise ship’s pool. Water may be readily available on the boat, but an insulated tumbler will do a better job at keeping your drink cold than a glass, and you’ll be refilling it less often. I’ve been loyal to my Hydro Flask water bottle for about five years now and can attest to its ability to keep your drink cold for up to 24 hours.

Personally, I prefer to bring a larger duffle and tuck a tote like this inside it for even more space. This bag is easy to compress because it’s made of a soft cotton material. But my favorite packing hack is to stuff a tote with clothes before putting it into your suitcase to really save space.

Another important shoe to have on a cruise is a pool slide that will take you from the outer deck to the buffet. Have I mentioned yet that cruises have all-you-can-eat buffets? And that you’re always a few steps away from your next snack while aboard the ship? You just need a shoe that will take you there.

Too often I hear people say that they don’t go on cruises because they’re prone to motion sickness. And I have to be honest, even aboard a larger ship, you’ll likely be able to feel the boat rocking at times. However, as someone who is sensitive to sea sickness myself, I can assure you this shouldn’t deter you from setting sail and there’s a solution that will keep you feeling your best.

Dramamine is the first thing I buy for all of my trips and the only reason I’m able to keep up with my cruising habit. I even once found myself buying a German version of this pill when I didn’t bring enough on a Europe trip (though it did make for one of my all-time most interesting souvenirs). While I’ve tried nonoral remedies for motion sickness, such as patches and wristbands , I find that these pills are the only thing that ward off my nausea completely. If you’re prone to motion sickness too, I suggest taking the pills preemptively, at a specified time each day. They last for 24 hours and the less drowsy formula doesn’t cause any tiredness for me.

Texas Mother Arrested After Leaving Her Young Children Home Alone to Go on Cruise

A Texas mother is facing time behind bars after allegedly leaving her young children home alone while she went on vacation.

As reported by KHOU 11, Lakesha Woods Williams is facing a child abandonment charge after she allegedly left her two young children, aged 6 and 8 years old, alone in her Houston apartment for nearly a week while she was on a cruise.

Williams, 29, was arrested and booked into jail last Thursday and has been charged with abandoning a child with intent to return. She is being held on a $25,000 bond.

The mother of two was arrested after police received a a call from a neighbor who was concerned about the children's safety. According to police, the apartment was in “disarray,” as the officers who arrived at the scene said trash and leftover food was scattered around the home, which also smelled like urine.

“On April 9th, deputies found the children alone in the apartment, and they told deputies their mother was on a cruise,” police said in its news release. “Paramedics and CPS were called to the scene to check on the kids' health and safety.”

A spokesman for the constable’s office said that Williams returned home April 10, six days after her children told police their mother left for a cruise on April 4.

"We are still putting together the facts and circumstances of how these children were left alone for several days," Constable Ted Heap said in a post on Facebook. "But the important thing is they are safe now and those responsible should be held accountable for leaving these kids in an unsafe situation."

Williams appeared in court Friday where she received a $25,000 bond. On Monday, a judge upheld the bond decision.

The news comes not long after a woman was charged with murder after abandoning her toddler for 10 days to go on vacation.

T he 2026 solar eclipse is set to occur on August 12th, 2026. As Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years, there is a healthy amount of interest in the breathtaking (and fleeting) eclipse. But solar eclipses cannot be seen from anywhere which means that some people are located in less than ideal locations. This unfortunate complication has led to a spike in what some call Astro-tourism , traveling for the best views to stargaze. Some travelers have taken to the idea of getting on a cruise to get the best unobstructed views of the 2026 eclipse.

A cruise journey to view the eclipse may be the solution to high travel costs in Europe or for travelers not interested in staying abroad. The convenience of cruises may be ideal for a vacation planned around an astronomical event. Cruises allow travelers to sit back and relax while their transportation is taken care of. Travelers can even purchase rooms with patio views where they can lounge out and relax with their eclipse glasses. Many cruise lines are adding or marketing their current cruises to be eclipse-viewing cruises. There have been eclipse cruises in the past, so travelers will have everything they need to enjoy the alignment.

Cruise Options for the 2026 Eclipse

These European cruises are the best journeys for travelers to see the eclipse of 2026. There are shorter-term sailing cruises and long-term cruises, so travelers have good options. Travelers can even choose from a warm eclipse-viewing vacation or a chilly getaway.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises has already claimed that they will have a cruise that will sail through Spain during the time of the eclipse. The cruise is set to be on their Sky Princess ship, which is contemporarily designed and has next-level touchless technology. Travelers interested in Princess Cruises should check their website on May 23rd, 2024. This is when they will announce more information on their cruises that have viewing opportunities.

Cunard Line

Three of Cunard’s ships will be in alignment with the eclipse. Travelers who want peak views of the event can choose from different travel destinations. The Queen Anne ship embarks on a seven-night cruise through Spanish and French ports. Travelers who prefer warmer temperatures are bound to enjoy this journey on the cruise line’s newest ship. The cruise departs from Southampton, England and goes on to explore the four different destinations. On the day of the eclipse, the ship will dock at La Coruña, which is on the northwest coast of Spain.

Cunard also offers a week-long western Mediterranean cruise on the Queen Victoria ship. The ship will depart from Civitavecchia, Rome on August 10th, 2026. By the day of the eclipse, August 12th, travelers will be exploring Tarragona, Spain. Travelers can witness the eclipse while exploring the port or view it while relaxing onboard.

If travelers appreciate chillier weather, there’s a 14-night voyage that begins in Southampton, England and ends in New York. This journey will begin on August 4th and end on August 18th of 2026. Travelers will be able to explore Iceland and Norway on the Cunard cruise. On the day of the eclipse, travelers will be in Reykjavik, Iceland , a fishing village with stunning landscapes.

Holland America

The Holland America cruise line is also planning to have multiple sailings around the eclipse. These cruises will follow the popular 2024 eclipse cruises. Travelers can expect to hear more details about the three European sailings at a later date.

Albatross Expeditions

This cruise line is a polar cruise operator, which often has sailings around Antarctica. Albatros will have an Arctic cruise during the eclipse. This 13-day journey will explore West Greenland, which is a great viewing destination. The cruise departs on August 10th from Reykjavik, Iceland and returns in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.

Judge keeps bond at $25K for mother accused of leaving her children alone for days to go on cruise

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A mother accused of leaving her children home alone for days while she went on a vacation appeared before a judge on Monday.

While 29-year-old Lakesha Woods Williams was on a cruise to Puerto Rico, authorities say her kids - just 8 and 6 years old - were left to fend for themselves.

She was arrested last Thursday and has been in jail since then.

Williams is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, and according to court records, neighbors say this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

Residents at Williams' luxury high-rise apartment building in the Memorial area reportedly called authorities worried about the kids. They said they saw the mother of two leave with luggage and bags on April 4, and she never returned.

The children were said to be left alone for at least five days and told deputies they didn't know when their mom was coming home.

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office went to Williams' apartment for a welfare check last Tuesday and said that the apartment was in disarray, it smelled like urine, and there was leftover food all over the place.

Authorities reported finding a web camera and cell phone that the children said their mother used to check in on them. When deputies contacted Williams, they said she was uncooperative and changed her story about where she was.

On Monday, a magistrate judge reviewed Williams' bond and kept it at $25,000, calling the circumstances "egregious."

Her children are now in the custody of her sister, and the magistrate issued a protective order that prevents her from communicating with or being near her daughter and son.

"We take these child abuse cases very seriously. Even if you're acting negligently, it's not an excuse," Asst. District Attorney Keegan Childers said on Monday.

A Texas woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her children at home alone to take a cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter by themselves in their Houston apartment to go on vacation on April 4, according to a criminal complaint.

She is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office made a wellness check on Tuesday following a call for service. A witness told them that neighbors in the complex were concerned about the safety of two kids left on their own in one of the units. The witness said other residents had seen Williams leaving with bags and luggage and did not see her come back.

“The apartment was in complete disarray and had trash and left-over food all over the unit,” the document said. There was a “very potent smell of urine” inside as well.

“No adults were present supervising the juveniles, and none appeared to have been present since the Defendant’s departure,” the document continued. Deputies also found a camera in the apartment that Williams used to watch and talk to the kids during her trip, and her son had a phone he used to text her.

The document did not specify which cruise line Williams sailed with or where she went. “Deputies tried contacting the Defendant to make the scene, but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts,” the document said.

The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children “were in good health and not malnourished,” and Child Protective Services reported to the scene before releasing the children to their aunt.

An attorney for Williams was not listed.
