Originally constructed as a convict holding facility, The Roundhouse later transitioned into a police lock-up in the latter part of the 19th century.

Its walls have witnessed many chapters of history: it has served as accommodation for the Water Police and later as a storage facility for the Fremantle Ports.

Today, it stands proudly as a museum, offering a window into the past of this vibrant port city.

Daily tours allow you to explore The Roundhouse for free and immerse yourself in its intriguing past. This historic building not only offers a glimpse into the life of early settlers and convicts but also boasts breathtaking views of Fremantle and the expansive Indian Ocean from its vantage point on the hill.

It’s a must-visit for anyone keen to unravel the storied tapestry of Fremantle’s history.

10. Fremantle Shipwreck Museum

Location: 47 Cliff Street

One of the top Fremantle activities is visiting the WA shipwreck museum, the perfect place to learn about the fascinating maritime history of Western Australia.

The Shipwrecks Museum is also a great place to visit with kids. The highlight is the hull of the Batavia, which is kept in a temperature-controlled room in the museum.

The museum also offers a glimpse into the lives of early explorers and settlers who braved the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean. Alongside the fascinating relics, the museum features interactive exhibits and multimedia displays.

We loved this museum. You can read our review of the WA Shipwreck Museum here.

11. WA Maritime Museum

On a bigger scale than the Shipwreck Museum, the WA Maritime Museum offers excellent things to do in Perth with kids. This museum offers local history and plenty of hands-on exhibits.

My personal favourites are the Submarine and Australia II. Like SciTech, they always show different kid’s activities in Perth for the children during Western Australian school holidays.

12. The Army Museum of Fremantle, WA

Location: Artillery Barracks, 6 Burt Street

Entry Fees at the time of writing: Adults $15.00, Seniors or Concessions $10, Kids aged 6-17 $10

For budding military enthusiasts, the Army Museum of WA Fremantle is an excellent place to visit in Fremantle. FYI, it is also called the War Museum Perth or the Fremantle Military Museum.

Once inside the Army Museum in Fremantle, there are World War 1, World War 2, and then modern wars (Korea and Afghanistan, as well as peacekeeping missions and many others). It’s not just about the war equipment, but the history of the wars and how they came about.

If you love history and more traditionally presented information (this is not a “new style” museum), then this is a place where you could spend hours immersed in the history of Australia’s men and women in military campaigns.

In some ways, it is more history than military. We spent an hour with kids aged 2, 7 and 11 – the older your kids are, the longer you will spend.

Logistics For a Visit

  • We needed to park in the street outside the barracks – it was only a short walk.
  • You need to sign in at the gate while visiting a military installation.
  • The entry is paid at the main building.
  • Many enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers share their knowledge – what a privilege to learn from them.

Fremantle City’s main beaches – each with its unique charm – are perfect for various activities, whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely swim, kite surfing, or just a relaxing day soaking up the sun.

It’s a blissful respite for some, but for beachgoers, it’s a hint to choose your spot wisely. If you’re not a fan of being sand-blasted, aim to hit the beach early or find a cozy spot in one of the many beachside cafés to enjoy the ocean view. From painting, drawing, ceramics, and jewelry, there is so much more here for everyone. Interested in art then definitely check out their art courses and also check what’s on in FAC .

When in Fremantle, you don’t have to worry about food. The city has a number of good restaurants & cafes to choose from to treat your taste buds. Hit the doors of the Duke of George, Mojos Bar, Who’s your mama, or L’chaim Bar, the choice is endless. Freo Social is also a great place with good music, good food & drinks.

If you feel like dancing the night away, there are a few nightclubs too; Metropolis is a great one with a dance floor and 8 bars. Experiencing the nightlife is a fun thing to do in Fremantle that will make you understand why Freo (as we locals call it) is loved so much.

Final Thoughts – Is Fremantle worth visiting?

There is no doubt that Fremantle is a lively city in Australia with absolutely no shortage of fun. With a lot of history involved and so many things to do in Fremantle, it won’t be wrong to say the capital city of Perth can look a bit dull in comparison. It’s a thriving tourist hotspot and local’s favorite city. It makes a perfect stop if you are road tripping along the coast. Whether it’s up towards Jurien Bay or Kalbarri or down towards beautiful Southwest Australia.

Amazing post! Rottnest Island seems so dreamy. I would love to visit there one day.

I’m looking forward to discovering WA and Freemantle looks like a great place to visit…especially Rottnest Island. I’ll save this for later. Thanks for sharing!

I had not heard of Fremantle but I have always wanted to visit Rottnest Island so it’s great to learn more about somewhere close by there for when I actually get to visit. The craft beer is calling my name, as are the markets. Looks like a lovely place

This brings me back to my time in Fremantle many years ago. Went on a day trip from Perth. Wanted to go to Rottnest island as well, but realized that it was beyond my budget. So I just spent time exploring and having fish n chips at the harbor. Really nice place to chill out at.

I loved Fremantle when I was there. My favourite place was the Maritime Museum then the coffee shops. I hope to get back there soon. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow this looks like a beautiful place to visit, and great for photos too! I would love to have a stroll around those markets.

  • Fremantle Prison Tours

Fremantle Prison is the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Perth and was one of the earliest convict prisons, operating from 1855 to 1991. After closing, the prison was restored to its former conditions and opened to the public in 1992. There are five Fremantle Prison tours you can take, all with a slightly different theme: Convict Prison, Behind Bars, True Crime, Tunnels Tour, and Torchlight Tour.

Open 9 am – 5 pm, 7 days a week, except Good Friday & Christmas day.

Western Australian Maritime Museum

Located on Fremantle’s waterfront, this sail-shaped landmark showcases the town’s colourful maritime history and houses the America’s Cup winning yacht, Australia II, and Parry Endeavour, the yacht that took solo yachtsman Jon Sanders three times around the world.

The Western Australian Maritime Museum consists of several galleries, showcasing the amazing maritime connection Fremantle has as a coastal town and port. You will see several boats and vessels, some suspended from the ceiling, including pearl luggers and an Aboriginal bark canoe.

The highlight for us was the tour of the Oberon class Submarine, HMAS Ovens, a Cold War-era vessel that lives outside the museum on the World War Two submarine slipway. This exhibit serves as a memorial to those who gave their lives while serving from Fremantle during World War Two.

The tour lets you discover what life is like aboard a submarine – not recommended for anyone who is claustrophobic! You also need a reasonable level of fitness to climb 9 metre high scaffolding stairs, steeply inclined ladders, and to bend through narrow hatchways.

Open 9.30 am – 5 pm, 7 days a week, except Good Friday & Christmas day. ANZAC Day 1 pm to 5 pm. Book direct at WA Maritime Museum .

WA Shipwrecks Museum

The WA Shipwreck Museum is in the convict-built, 1852 Commissariat building and holds an outstanding display of maritime archaeology. The museum houses hundreds of relics from ships that were wrecked along Western Australia’s treacherous coastline, including a section of the hull from the Dutch merchant ship, Batavia (wrecked in 1629).

Open 9.30 am – 5 pm, 7 days a week, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and Good Friday. ANZAC Day 1 pm to 5 pm. Free entry (suggested donation A$5).

Fremantle Arts Centre

The Fremantle Arts Centre is housed in a neo-Gothic style building constructed by convicts in 1860 as the Convict Establishment Fremantle Lunatic Asylum and Invalid Depot. It features a wide range of contemporary visual art by local, national, and international artists and is also a live music venue.

The café is a lovely spot for lunch and the shop stocks WA’s largest range of unique gifts and wares designed by local artists.

Grounds open 8 am – 5 pm, 7 days a week, reception, and shop 9 am to 5 pm, galleries 10 am to 5 pm Canvas Café 8 am – 3 pm Mon to Fri, 8 am – 4 pm Sat & Sun (kitchen closes 2 pm weekdays and 3 pm weekends) Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday. Free entry.

Fremantle Markets

No visit is complete without visiting the Fremantle Markets, housed in an 1897 Victorian-era building, designed in the Federation Romanesque style. The building is one of only two surviving municipal market buildings in Western Australia.

Fremantle Markets were first opened in 1897, but the building became a packing and distribution centre in the 1950s until the early 1970s. In 1975, it underwent a complete restoration and now has over 150 stalls selling local produce, souvenirs, clothes, crafts, and fresh food. As you wander through, your mouth waters with the different aromas wafting from the food hall with its different cuisines. Buskers perform inside the markets, and you’ll normally find street performers between the markets and the Sail and Anchor pub.

Hall open Fridays 9 am to 8 pm, Saturdays, Sundays & Public Holidays 9 am to 6 pm. Yard open Fridays 8 am to 8 pm, Saturdays, Sundays & Public Holidays 8 am to 6 pm. Closed Christmas Day. Free entry.

The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse, completed in 1831, is the oldest public building in Western Australia. This twelve-sided building was used as a gaol until 1886 and has since been a Police lock-up, accommodation for the Water Police, and a storage facility for Fremantle Ports. It is now open to the public.

The Round House held colonial and Aboriginal prisoners, including Nyoongar leader Yagan, and was the site of the colony’s first hanging. Aboriginal prisoners were held here before being transported to Rottnest Island .

Open every day 10.30 am to 3.30 pm. Closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. Free entry but Gold Coin Donation requested.

Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre

The Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre is only open on Thursdays and Fridays, but if you are wondering what to do in Fremantle on those days, this centre is the perfect way to learn more about the Aboriginal history and culture. Find out about Dreamtime and the Noongar Six Seasons or join an Aboriginal art or cultural workshop, where you can participate in bush tucker tastings, do some painting or basket weaving and learn some words of the Noongar language.

Fremantle Fishing Harbour

I always enjoy wandering around Fremantle Fishing Harbour, watching the fishing vessels and recreational boats heading out to sea. Fremantle port is WA’s largest with the harbour being home to over 400 fishing boats. It’s also one of the best spots in Fremantle to enjoy fresh seafood in one of the surrounding restaurants.

Fremantle Trails

There are several walking and cycle trails you can take to explore Fremantle’s history. The Manjaree Trail consists of interpretive signs explaining the six Nyoongar seasons. Download maps at Visit Fremantle .

Fremantle Street Art

Fremantle is one of the best places in Perth for culture and art – including street art . Take a stroll around the backstreets and you will find plenty of wall murals and art.

Fremantle has a variety of beautiful beaches for you to enjoy.

Bathers Beach is closest to the centre of Fremantle, just around the corner from the fishing harbour. Here you will find Western Australia’s first licensed beach area with lounge chairs on the white sand.

South Beach , in South Fremantle, has a large expanse of grass which is perfect for a bbq overlooking the ocean. If you’re here during summer, pop down on a Saturday for some tasty food truck delights at the South Beach Sunset Markets.

Leighton and Port beaches have long white sandy beaches with beachside cafes and are where the locals hang out. You’ll see lots of them cycling, running, walking their dogs, and just enjoying our beautiful weather.

Fremantle Sunset

If you want a drink, try Bathers Beach House, or head to Fremantle Fishing Harbour.

Another great location is Monument Hill which has views over the city and one of the best vantage points in Fremantle. While there, check out the The Fremantle War Memorial.

Consider a sunset cruise onboard the yellow catamaran, Capella. You’ll sail out into the Indian Ocean and along the WA coastline, enjoying a stunning sunset with the best view.

Getting Around Fremantle

Fremantle is easy to walk around and my favourite way of getting around this historic town. Not only do you get some exercise, but you also walk past points of interest you may not get to see on a bus.

The Fremantle CAT Bus stopped operating on the 1st October 2023, but you can use Bus 532 instead.

If you want to cycle, a bike tour is a popular choice, or you can hire a bike free from the Fremantle Visitor Centre for a refundable deposit.

Food and Drinks in Fremantle

Fremantle is a great place to dine during the day or evening and has a wonderful nightlife with clubs, pubs, and bars.

The “ Cappuccino Strip ” reminds me of Europe with table and chairs outside cafes and restaurants. Here you can enjoy a coffee or something stronger at one of the licensed premises and some have live music, open mic nights and cabaret.

If you’re looking for fish and chips, try Joe’s Fish Shack or Ciccerello’s at Fremantle Fishing Harbour.

Little Creatures serves up delicious chips and pizza with their amazing craft beers. They’re also child-friendly with a sand pit out the back.

We enjoy the view from the upstairs balcony of The National Hotel , which overlooks the centre of Fremantle and is a good vantage point to people watch.

There are lots more small bars, pubs, and breweries for you to discover or try a tour like the Fremantle Food Lovers Tour .

14 Fun Things To Do In Fremantle

list of fun things to do in fremantle

There’s always something to do in Fremantle, so if you haven’t discovered what makes it so special, I’ve put together a list of 14 fun things to do in Fremantle .

From chilled people watching and sampling local food and drink, to sky-high Ferris wheel riding and fascinating museums to explore, Fremantle has something for everyone.

Best Time Of Year To Visit Fremantle

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Fremantle would be during spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May). During that time, the weather is mostly mild and there are fewer crowds too.

The high temperatures during December and January, however, don’t seem to deter visitors as the city becomes abuzz with tourists and Perth day-trippers during that period, and even more so on weekends. Thankfully the sea breeze, affectionately known as the Fremantle Doctor, offers welcome relief, making life somewhat more tolerable.

The winter months of July and August, can be cold and wet, but fewer crowds make visiting museums, galleries, shops and restaurants more enjoyable.

How Long To Spend In Fremantle

With so many recreational and cultural attractions and fun things to in Fremantle, you would need at least three days to just get a taste of what this charming and historical city has to offer.

You’ll find Fremantle bursting with scenic beaches to swim and soak in the sun, fascinating museums and art galleries, quaint bars, restaurants and unique breweries, beautifully restored Victorian-style buildings, and a vibrant nightlife.

And then of course, there is the heart and soul of the city – the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. Cafes, pubs and restaurants overlooking fleets of boats moored alongside the boardwalks and jetties in the harbour.

If that’s not enough, there’s the mighty Swan River, on which you can cruise aboard a ferry all the way to the Perth city centre and beyond.   A boat ride to Rottnest Island, is a must-do, where you could easily spend a day or two, swimming or snorkelling in pristine clear water and taking in the magnificent scenery and wildlife.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending a bit longer than you anticipated experiencing the magic of Fremantle.

Getting To Fremantle

Fremantle is easily accessible by road, rail and ferry.

If you’re coming by car, it’s just a 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD, and there is ample and reasonably priced street parking (there are expensive car parks too so do your research before you set off).

Public buses run regularly to Fremantle from nearby suburbs. They’re fairly cheap and also take out the hassle of driving and finding parking.

The least costly and least stressful way of getting to Fremantle is by train, being the last stop on the Fremantle Line. The station is conveniently located within walking distance to the city centre and many of its landmark attractions.

Getting Around Fremantle

If you don’t mind a little bit of walking, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how close together so many of the city’s attractions are.

Otherwise, the CAT buses right next to the train station will take you to almost everywhere. These buses run every five minutes and cost nothing!

Another way of getting around Fremantle and learning about its history and character, is by booking a bus or tram tour, which take you through the city and to all the tourist sites. The bus driver will feed you interesting facts about the city throughout the trip.

Where To Stay In Fremantle

Whether you’re looking for opulent luxury hotels, Airbnb, or backpacker hostels, Fremantle will have you spoilt for choice.

They are all conveniently located in and around the city, most in walking distance to many of its attractions. The Esplanade Hotel is a popular choice and is located in the heart of the hustle and bustle, yet still offers a quiet oasis to escape to at the end of a busy day exploring Fremantle.

14 Fun Things To Do in Fremantle

1. taste everything at the fremantle markets.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gold Coast Airport (@goldcoastairport)

There are several indoor markets dotted all over the city, none more popular than Fremantle Markets situated on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street.

Since 1897, this historic market draws thousands of people every weekend, with 150 stalls offering exquisite handicrafts, antiques, gifts, books, fashion, jewellery, books, music, art, and fresh produce while the food courts provide a delicious array of specialty foods.

The E-Shed Market, situated in the port next to the Rottnest Ferry docking point, offers a similar range of goods and foods.  Seating both indoors and outdoors create a great setting to enjoy a snack watching boats glide past while buskers provide more entertainment.

2. Take A Tour Of Fremantle Prison

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fremantle Prison (@fremantleprison)

Prisons seem to hold a fascination for many people and Fremantle Prison is no exception. Built by the convicts themselves in the mid-19 th Century, it remained in service until 1991, and was the first built environment in WA to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Today, various tours on offer allow people to step back in time and get a proper taste of prison life, an experience to put off anyone from committing any crimes. You can choose the Behind Bars or True Crime guided tours, where you hear about some daring escapes, or if you’re feeling courageous, try the Tunnels Tour, where you navigate on foot or by boat through a labyrinth of tunnels, 20 metres underground carved by the convicts.

If you’re really feeling fearless, I dare you to do an eerie Torch Light Dungeon Tour at night! I still haven’t had the courage to do one, although they look really fun!

3. Go On A Street Art Trail

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eeva | Travel Australia (@eeva_briotet)

If you’re into unusual art, grab your camera and go on a self-guided Street Art Trail through the side streets of Fremantle, combining it with a little bit of shopping and catching a bite in the many cafes and restaurants along the way.

For years Fremantle has attracted many local and international street artists, transforming old buildings into beautiful artworks. While admiring the numerous colourful murals, historical statues and 3D artworks, you will discover many historical buildings, churches, and unusual shops that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The artworks are forever changing and you never know what you’ll bump into around each corner.

For more information on where to go and a few glimpses of what to expect, check out this self-guided street art route , or book a guided Convicts, Culture and Street Art Tour with Two Feet & A Heartbeat.

4. Visit The Fremantle Round House

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Freo Volunteer Heritage Guides (@fremantle_roundhouse)

To combine culture, history and stunning scenery, walk through the tunnel that runs beneath the Fremantle Round House , before ascending the stairway to Fremantle’s oldest public building.

Built by convicts in 1831, this unusual 12-sided building was used as a prison until 1886, but is now open to the public with entry being a voluntary gold coin donation.

Let the volunteers tell you some interesting stories of the city’s past, you will not find written anywhere. Panoramic views of the harbour and Bather’s Beach can also be enjoyed from the top.

5. Get Fish & Chips At Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour (@fremantlefishingboatharbour)

You cannot say you’ve been to Fremantle if you haven’t had fish & chips at the Fishing Boat Harbour . This must-see harbour is always buzzing with people, and it’s not hard to understand why. It is stunning! Hundreds of fishing boats bobbing on the water, with tons of shops bars and restaurants lining the boardwalks and jetties.

Take a slow stroll around taking in the vibrant atmosphere of the harbour, while checking out the various food joints. There is a huge range of cuisines on offer so you’re sure to find something you love.

6. Ride Skyview Wheel At Esplanade Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hello Perth (@helloperth)

Directly behind the Fishing Boat Harbour is a lovely grassed public park, with loads of shade, ideal for a stroll, a picnic and for the kids to run around in the area. Swings, Ping pong tables and a skateboard area are also provided.

The star of the park is of course the Skyview Wheel . This 40-metre-high Ferris wheel provides stunning views of the port, the city, plus on a clear day you can see all the way to the Perth Hills in the interior and Rottnest Island out there in the blue ocean. It’s the perfect spot for that cheesy but essential tourist photo.

7. Dive Into The WA Maritime Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Visit Fremantle (@visitfremantle) var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) {document.write(' '); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width '); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width '); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }if ( quads_screen_width '); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); }

A few minutes’ walk from the Fremantle train station is the superb WA Maritime Museum , where you can lose yourself for hours in the fascinating maritime history of this port city.

Hundreds of beautiful displays of boats, undersea creatures and all types of marine equipment, from bygone days to today, including, the 1983 Americas Cup winner, Australia ɪɪ , and even a real and rare mega mouth shark.

A guided tour through the Cold War era Oberon class submarine, HMAS Ovens , parked on the slipway, is a real adventure not to be missed.

8. Discover Unique WA History At The WA Shipwrecks Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Family Outback Adventures (@family_outback_adventures)

A few hundred metres away and directly behind Bather’s Beach, is the fascinating WA Shipwrecks Museum that is certainly worth a visit.

It houses tons of relics and artifacts recovered from various shipwrecks off the WA coast, including the original timbers of the infamous Batavia, which sank 60 kms off the coast at Geraldton in 1629, and resulted in one of the worst horror stories in maritime history.

The exhibits and audio visuals are masterfully done, captivating the minds of young and old alike. Surprisingly, entry is free, but a small donation will be most welcome. We visited a few years ago when my son was learning all about WA’s shipwrecks and he absolutely loved it – we spent a good few hours exploring all the exhibitions and found it beautifully laid out and it definitely kept our attention all the way round.

The calm and shallow waters of this 300 metre white sandy beach, are perfect for swimming, paddling, kite surfing, or just lounging in the sun, and is also ideal for families with small children.

Places to Visit in Fremantle: A Great Day Trip from Perth

A port city 30 minutes from Perth, Fremantle, or Freo to the locals, is a buzzing hub of activity with buskers, art galleries, cafes, pubs and an eclectic range of shops. The historic city centre is the perfect size to explore on foot, and there are numerous beaches, markets and museums to enjoy.

You can get there by train or boat from Perth, enjoy a day of culture or a night on the town, and shop ’til you drop at the many markets, boutiques and quirky local stores. A day out in Fremantle was one of my favourite things to do in Perth when I lived there, so here are my recommendations for a great day out!

Historic Fremantle

Fremantle is a well-preserved historic city established in the 19th century and home to Western Australia’s largest collection of heritage listed buildings. But it wasn’t always such a pleasant place to visit: learn about its gruesome convict history at Fremantle Prison , built in the 1850s and used right up until 1991; pay a visit to the Round House Prison , the first permanent building in Western Australia, built in 1831; or just admire the beautiful heritage buildings as you wander the streets!

Backpackers exploring Fremantle on a day trip from Perth.

Fremantle Markets

The Fremantle Markets, held Friday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays, was one of my all time favourite places to visit in Fremantle. The colourful markets are housed inside a beautiful, listed Victorian-era building, built in 1897 on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street – you won’t miss it! There are over 150 stalls selling everything from food to handicrafts. Along with the smaller stalls there are large fruit and vegetable stands, pretty boutiques and even a public piano to tinkle on. Hot food and coffee is available along with an outdoor dining area.

Fremantle Beaches

If all the shopping and sightseeing gets too much, head to one of these lovely beaches and unwind:

  • Bathers Beach – a 300m long, family-friendly beach and the easiest to visit from the city centre, being only a short stroll from the main shopping area and train station.
  • Port Beach – a popular swimming beach with calm water situated in North Fremantle next to the North Quay wharf facilities.
  • Leighton Beach – another swimming beach in North Fremantle, with sand dunes, free parking and plenty of facilities nearby.
  • South Beach – a large white beach in South Fremantle with picnic areas, a children’s playground and barbecues. You can even take your dog to the northern section!

A sunny day at Bathers Bay, Fremantle Australia.

Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

The Fishing Boat Harbour is a working port for fishermen combined with a commercial marina with a variety of places to eat and drink, such as Little Creatures Brewery . The boardwalks are lovely to stroll along; Esplanade Park lies directly behind it; and the WA Shipwreck Museum , with displays of early exploration and shipwrecks along the WA coastline, is also nearby at 45 Cliff Street, open daily with free entry.

Victoria Quay: E-Shed Markets & WA Maritime Museum

The E-Shed markets are held on the waterfront at Victoria Quay, and consist of over 80 stalls selling local arts and crafts, furniture, clothes, jewellery and more. The E-Shed markets are open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays, and also sell international food. The WA Maritime Museum is located at Victoria Quay too.

Food & Drink in Fremantle

With a range of food available from all over the world, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re looking for somewhere to eat and drink. Watch the world go by with a latte at one of the many cafes with alfresco seating along the famous Cappuccino Strip on South Terrace, enjoy lunch with a waterside view at Fishing Boat Harbour, pick up a take away and head to Bathers Beach or Esplanade park, or grab a cold beer and enjoy Fremantle’s live music scene in one of its many funky pubs.

Fremantle River Cruise

To combine your trip with glorious views of the Swan River and its surrounds, why not ditch the train and travel there via boat on a river cruise? I chose the Fremantle Explorer with Captain Cook Cruises which allowed plenty of time to explore the city, offered free wine tasting on the return journey and pointed out all the riverside mansions along with which well-known people live in them!

12 Iconic Things to do in Fremantle That You Can’t Miss!

The port city of Fremantle (or Freo, as it’s often referred to by locals) is full of beautiful historic buildings and home to a lively music and arts scene. You’ll find the only UNESCO listed building in all of WA, Fremantle Prison, as well as plenty of other culturally significant sites that tell the story of Western Australia’s history.

Fremantle is known for its amazing food and nightlife scene so don’t be surprised if you spend the majority of your time eating and drinking your way around the city. Whether you’re a Perth local or just visiting on a holiday, I’ve created this list of 12 things to do in Fremantle that are a must for everyone! Fremantle is only 35 minutes from Perth city centre by train making it the perfect day out with family or friends.

Fremantle markets.

Without a doubt my favourite thing to do in Fremantle is heading to the colourful Fremantle Markets on a Saturday morning. This market has been running every weekend for over 100 years!

With more than 150 stalls to browse, you will find a huge variety of vendors from delicious food stalls, home-made coffee, fresh produce, hand-made clothing, jewelry, aboriginal art, authentic Australian souvenirs and so much more!

This is the place to pick-up the perfect gift. Whether you’re shopping for someone’s birthday present or looking for something unique to bring home to your family and friends, you’ll likely find what you’re looking for at the Fremantle Markets.

The market runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 6pm.

Fremantle Prison Tour

Dive into Western Australia’s fascinating convict history when you visit the UNESCO Heritage listed Fremantle Prison. The building was originally constructed by convicts as a maximum-security prison in the 19th century and was used continually until 1991.

Over the years, many dramatic events took place at Fremantle Prison such as convict escapes, prisoner riots and executions. The last hanging at the prison took place as recently as the 1960’s!

Step back through time when you take a prison tour and listen to the dark stories told by your guide. There are a number of prison tours to choose from but the most popular one, and the one that we recommend doing, is the Torchlight Tour.

This fantastic tour takes you through the prison at night and the guides really bring those eerie, old prison vibes to life in the dark! Keep in mind that this tour is quite popular and requires booking in advance.
