Greece is a peninsular country that juts out into the Ionian Sea and Mediterranean Sea. It’s located in Europe, east of Turkey and south of Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. The country also includes over 1,000 islands, the largest of which are Crete and Cyprus. While Greece is known for its picturesque coastlines, much of the country is mountainous. The Pindus mountain range is the most prominent, while Mount Olympus is the highest point in Greece.

Best and Worst Times to Visit

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Greece because the weather is pleasant, and the summer vacationers aren’t around. It’s warm enough to swim in the sea and the sun is out. Keep in mind though, Easter is one of the most popular holidays in the country, so hotel availability can be sparse at this time. Also, many shops open in June and close in October, so you could face fewer options during the off-season.

If you don’t want to deal with swarms of vacationers and soaring temperatures around 100 degrees F, avoid visiting during August. The scorching summertime attracts visitors, which causes rates to skyrocket. Also, temperatures drop from November to February, and Greece becomes chillier and cloudier. This time span is considered one of the worst times to visit if you’ve got your heart set on beach weather.

Greece is a hot spot for honeymoons, family trips, and solo getaways. Here at Expedia.com, we offer the best selection of affordable hotels in Greece that suit all your vacation preferences. Whether you’re traveling with your kids or celebrating your anniversary, there’s a place for you. Some of these hotels feature restaurants with authentic Greek cuisine and complimentary breakfasts. Many of them provide a bar, 24-hour front desk service, and Wi-Fi access in public areas, too.

You’ll also find a selection of Greece resorts that include additional amenities than those offered at the hotels. Some feature full-service spas and outdoor pools, while others present poolside bars and nightclubs. When you browse our assortment, you’ll find cheap deals on resorts and hotels in Greece that fall within your travel budget.

Things to Do

If you’re venturing to Greece to bask on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, head straight to Crete. As Greece’s largest island, Crete flaunts a picturesque coastline and secluded beaches. Balos Beach is a top pick and has been compared to the Caribbean for its white sand and clear water, while Vai is another favorite beach, surrounded by Europe’s largest palm tree forest. Island hop to other picture-perfect destinations, such as Mykonos and Santorini, which boast magnificent sea views, cobblestone streets, and the famous white-washed houses.

There’s more to this Mediterranean paradise than the aqua water and white villas stacked along the coastline. The country is steeped in history, and Athens is one of the top places to see some of the most celebrated landmarks. Visit the Acropolis of Athens, which is an ancient citadel, and discover the Parthenon that dates back to 440 BC. While you’re in town, browse the exhibits at the National Archaeological Museum, explore Syntagma Square, and then rest up at one of the nearby hotels in Athens .

Turn up the adventure during your Grecian getaway. Hike around the ancient sites in Delfi or explore the serenity of nature at the Aoos Gorge. Get some height with a rock climbing excursion at Mount Timfi, paraglide over Drama for a bird’s-eye view of the region, and whitewater raft in Tzoumerka. From sea kayaking around Kefalonia to mountain biking in Mount Olympus, you’ll see a different side of the Greek islands.

Greece has an extensive history, and much of its past is still celebrated and preserved today. The concept of theater was developed in Athens, while the Olympic games are traced back to Olympia. The Greek people are responsible for creating marble and bronze sculptures along with the style of Greek Romantic art.

There are also a number of festivals that take place in Greece. Carnival is one of the most famous celebrations the country. During the three weeks leading up to Clean Monday, the streets become a colorful sea of carnivals and parades. Live music blares, while costumed performers dance along elaborate floats. Teams compete in treasure hunts, searching for clues throughout the city; children play games; and fireworks fly through the sky.

After observing Carnival and Lent, the Greek people host Easter, which is one of their biggest holidays. They start the celebrations on Maundy Thursday by dying eggs red, and then decorating the Epitaph on Good Friday. Easter Sunday marks the end of their 40-day fast, prompting a massive lamb feast.

Greek food follows the Mediterranean diet. Many of the dishes feature olive oil, fish, and vegetables, however, each region of Greece adds its own spin. While there are variations on many of these meals, some of the most popular fare includes dolmades, moussaka, and courgette balls. Olives and feta cheese often accompany the cuisine, while honey and baklava make for a sweet desert.

Whether you’re craving some fresh Mediterranean cuisine or a peaceful getaway at the seaside, Greece is the answer to all your vacation desires. Sort through our selection of cheap deals on hotels and flights to Greece to get your island sojourn started today.

The best hotels in Greece

By Rachel Howard

Just when you think you know Greece , you’ll happen upon another slice of coast, sail to another island, or stumble across yet another one of the best hotels in Greece – and your perceptions are flipped all over again. Big-hitting Santorini (bright-white churches topped by blue domes that melt into the sky) and Mykonos (dinky beach bars arranged around a Venetian harbour) get a lot of attention. The scrubbier, craggier islands of Crete and Corfu , and the smaller, more bohemian flecks of land such as Antiparos and Syros are much-loved, too. On the mainland, Athens might be steeped in history but is always pushing boundaries with clever art, restaurants and bars. And across the whole country are some of Europe’s best hotels – from sweeping retreats for switching off to stays built into caves and low-key hangouts that put wellness at the forefront of everything. Here, Athens-raised Rachel Howard picks her favourite hotels in Greece, from her favourite island spots to the mainland must-visits.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel

Poseidonion Grand Hotel, Spetses Arrow

As featured on our 2024 Gold List of the best hotels in the world

Looking across the water from Porto Heli to Spetses, the first thing you notice is the Poseidonion, jutting out like a vast, immaculately frosted cake above the shore. On opening in 1914, it was the first hotel in the Balkans with hot water, and was constructed with steel from Germany , wood from Romania and limestone from Bulgaria: only the best would do, whatever the cost. Years of decay followed, and there are stories of bathrooms collapsing down three floors into the lobby. But now, fully restored and extended by its owner, Emmanuel Vordonis, it is, once again, immensely glamorous and international. It has the feel of a very wealthy and adored Edwardian maiden aunt, taking a detour from the usual Côte d’Azur to enjoy instead the delights of a Greek island . There are rooms with sea views and garden views, pool suites, royal suites and a Tower Room – all in a classic pale palette that reflects the island light to such an extent that you have the suspicion, now and again, that you’re somehow floating. The seafood is excellent, and dining on the outside terrace you really feel the electricity, communal warmth and humour of this very special island. Antonia Quirke

Porto Zante, Zakynthos Arrow

It’s the steps down to the stone-clad spa here that I remember most clearly. Perhaps because I was eight months pregnant, and hyper-aware, but mainly because they were straight from a fairy tale: so dinky and intriguing, paved into the hillside and bordered by lush Mediterranean foliage. I’d walk down them to a different treatment every day, as per the family-owned hotel’s advice – gradually unwinding, resetting, reviving, listening and watching the waves of the Ionian Sea through huge open windows. Porto Zante is ideal for a babymoon. The villas are vast, design-driven but ultra-comfortable, with a temperature-controlled pool and a personal concierge, who embraced us and said, “You are our babies now”. Few places in Europe are as private or have service levels to match this. Want to eat from the Japanese-Asian menu at Maya, but in the Greek-Mediterranean Club House so you can listen to the resident pianist? Done. Need some time out from your toddler, but they’re resisting the kids’ club? The determined staff will have them giggling in no time. Are you keen to explore the surrounding sea and villages or the nearby city? Itineraries can be arranged on the day and then adapted from the four-by-four or yacht. It’s no wonder that presidents, royals and cultural icons come here to disappear down those magical steps whenever they need to lighten their mental load. Becky Lucas

One & Only Aesthesis, Athenian Riviera Arrow

The latest milestone in the revival of the Athenian Riviera, Greece’s first One & Only resort offers an unstuffy approach to ultra-luxury. In its 1960s heyday, Asteria beach was a playground for socialites and starlets; many black-and-white Greek movies were shot in the Modernist bungalows and open-air restaurant. The new buildings follow the exact blueprint of the original layout, with 137 bungalows, villas and residences scattered between lush gardens and the shoreline. Interiors are a tour de force of discreet decadence, but it’s the seamless service and cut-above amenities that really elevate the experience. The luscious Guerlain spa is reason enough to book a stay; the nourishing honey and orchid facials are phenomenal. It would take weeks to work through the sensational breakfast spread at Ora restaurant (don’t miss the almond and feta cake). By night, Ora’s lemon-yellow booths become a lively setting for chef Ettore Botrini’s accessible but accomplished Greco-Italian menu. At El Bar, three-Michelin starred Paco Morales has created an extravagant take on tapas, featuring smoky salmorejo with cheese foam and indecently unctuous chicken croquettes with Ras el Hanout mayo. The space is dark and moody, uplifted by an Andalucian soundtrack and exuberant staff. Every guest has two dedicated hosts, on call round-the-clock (via What’s App) for super-prompt room service, restaurant reservations, padel and tennis sessions, or SUP lessons with the Greek national champion. The slim beach is not the best swimming on the Athens Riviera — but once you’re inside this cloistered enclave, you couldn’t care less. If you get antsy, the Acropolis is a 30-minute drive. Private museum tours and boat trips can be arranged. Rachel Howard

Kyrimai, Mani

As featured on our 2023 Gold List of the best hotels in the world

Down in deepest Mani, the middle tentacle of the Peloponnese, there’s nothing for miles save for the occasional road lined with shrines, or fields full of chest-high thistles; here and there, old stone towers stab the sky. In one such place, Gerolimenas, on the far southwestern shore, Kyrimai hotel has occupied a 19th-century tower house for some 20 years. Originally built by the family who runs the establishment, it’s perfect as far as conversions go: immaculate and indulgent, yet retaining the deep romance of a place so remote it might have been overgrown with brambles only a week ago. It’s a maze of arches and stairways, the rooms inside the thick stone walls often split on two levels, with beds wearing white linen tucked in the eaves. Yet nothing feels cavelike. Instead, sunshine spreads beyond the windows and shutters into the amber-coloured walls and along hefty wooden floors. A restaurant sits above clear water in which fish curl and loll toward the shadows. It’s impossible not to step off repeatedly for a swim. There’s usually someone doing laps around the bay, or the sound of a creaking boat resounding off thyme-scented cliffs. In spring, the high rocks can turn light blue with wild sage that also appears in the house cocktails. The food is the best in the region: sardines with black olives whose spicy freshness cuts through the fatty fish oil, and rock samphire that turns creamed feta from a salty Greek chore into something paradisiacal. Antonia Quirke

The Wild Mykonos

The Wild Hotel, Mykonos

The Wild has provenance: its creators were the restaurateurs behind Interni, a Mykonos institution with outposts in Athens and Belgrade. Family patriarch Nikos Varveris also created homewares brand Moda Bagno (not bad composite skills for a hotel). When they were small, Varveris would bring his children to jump off cliffs encasing a scoop of sand on Mykonos’ peaceful southwestern coast. Now, grown-up Philip and Alex have created The Wild here. This laidback idyll of 40 rooms and suites, some with plunge pools (and a two-bedroom pool villa) opened on the cusp of the pandemic. Sofia Apergi and Matina Karava’s architecture made use of local stones and woods. Polished-concrete spaces are softened with handcrafted lampshades and kilims. The suites resemble a higgledy chora –  organic and rustic yet sleek. They tumble down to a curvy cliff-top infinity pool, and a small spa, bar and restaurant area. A stone staircase winds down to the beach .

The Wild eschews the raucousness of Mykonos. Instead, the sons followed the template and memory of their family home: a convivial, aesthetic space filled with friends with a busy kitchen. A slow-food philosophy is embraced, with family recipes and local produce at Taverna, a simulacrum of a village cafe, with its Myconian cheeses, crisp pies, meats and catches of the day. Pine-framed multi-level Raw, overlooking the beach, lantern-lit by night, is for botanical cocktails, sakes and Greek vintners. Food here speaks to demanding palates, with a Greek-Japanese plant-and-paleo-tilted menu by Kazouaki Sitamori. Rib-eye steaks and aubergines; Cycladic urchins and salmon roe; spicy tuna with black sesame and a vegan futomaki.

The Wild is built for eating beautifully, spa moments, long, poolside coffees, and beach lounging. This year they offer a rekitted sailing boat for trips to secluded swim spots off-island. Kick back and relax. The party is elsewhere. Lydia Bell

Onar Andros

Onar, Andros

Burnt out by the jet-setting life of an industry scion, Mateo Pantazopoulos built a few stone cottages overlooking Achla, his favourite beach on Andros , where he and his hard-partying pals could unwind. Fast forward two decades and this castaway fantasy has gone marginally more upmarket. There are now 15 elegantly spare houses, including five smart new villas with lap pools and planted roofs. But a challenging 9km dirt road is still the only way to reach the virgin bay of Achla (or, weather permitting, a 15-minute speedboat ride from Andros’ elegant Chora). Hiking trails lead into wetlands rustling with partridges, hares, and turtles, where you can cool off in lurid green rock pools. Most days are spent in a soporific daze, drifting to and from the beach and lulled into long siestas by a chorus of cicadas. Simple, summery dishes (tomato and basil bruschetta, sausage and potato omelette) are served at communal tables under giant plane trees. If you’re really lucky, a local fisherman will grill your supper around a campfire on the beach.

Aristide Syros

Aristide, Syros

The 19th-century commercial and shipping centre of Greece, Syros is not like other Greek islands. And the Aristide is not like other Greek island hotels. In a sugar-pink mansion built in the 1920s, this nine-suite hotel is located in Vaporia, the most aristocratic neighbourhood in the stately port capital, Hermoupolis. While the original neoclassical features (patterned floor tiles, stencilled ceilings, huge picture windows) have been carefully preserved, interiors are jazzed up with intense colours, intriguing contemporary art, and modern designer furnishing. Sustainability guided every aspect of the restoration and operations, from the energy-efficient cladding to the locally made organic cosmetics (in glass containers, naturally). A fledgling veg garden provides ingredients for the à la carte breakfast and rooftop restaurant, where the short, seasonal menu (calamari, zucchini, black garlic aioli, poached fish fricassee) is as sensational as the sea and harbour views. With a series of artists’ residencies, workshops, and exhibitions, guests can also tap into the island’s surprisingly vibrant cultural scene.

Perivolas Santorini

Perivolas, Santorini

A true original, Perivolas sums up the spirit of the Cyclades: simple, light, carefree. Built (and still run) by the Psychas family in the early 1980s, this instant classic was way ahead of its time. The curvaceous white ‘cave houses’ – sculpted from the cliff-face by native craftsmen, as they have done for centuries – sparked a revival of the village of Oia, which was all but abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 1956. But it was the wavy infinity pool, suspended above Santorini’s flooded caldera, that put the island on the map. While other hotels along the caldera can feel cramped and exposed, here on the very edge of Oia, there is space and privacy and calm. At the elegant restaurant, a converted wine cellar, every table feels like the best seat in the house. The recent addition of a small spa, sun-drenched gym, and yoga pavilion means there’s even less reason to venture beyond Perivolas. Why bother braving the Santorini crowds when you’re surrounded by so much natural beauty and good taste?

The Rooster Antiparos

The Rooster, Antiparos

The tiny island of Antiparos is a curious mix of go-slow wilderness and upscale Cycladic chic. Highfliers come and go to their modernist villas by helicopter, but hippies still hang out on the island’s campsite and party all night in the pint-sized port town. Straddling a peaceful valley overlooking Livadia bay, The Rooster bridges the two faces of the island beautifully. You could come here for a romantic escape, a wellness retreat , or even a family holiday. 16 stone villas, each with a private pool, are scattered among flourishing Mediterranean gardens. The vibe is more second home than hotel suite: tan-and-tawny interiors come with wine coolers and kimonos, and shady terraces with outdoor kitchens and showers let the natural surroundings sing. Although the location is remote, there’s plenty to fill slow days and star-spangled nights: sunrise salutations or sound baths in the House of Healing, a picnic on the empty beach, sunset margaritas in the open-air bar, seasonal Cycladic tapas in the Secret Garden, made with ingredients from the hotel’s organic farm. Should the urge to tap into your inner hippy strike, it’s only a ten-minute drive to the dinky bars in ‘downtown’ Antiparos.

Mèlisses Andros

Mèlisses, Andros

Allegra Pomilio was just 25 years old when she began hosting intimate culinary and creative retreats at her Italian family’s summer house on the deliciously underrated  Cycladic Island  of  Andros . Demand for these deeply nourishing (and impeccably styled) retreats was so feverish that Allegra eventually found herself running a very private guesthouse for six months of the year. Slotted into the coastline at the bottom of a steep, unpaved road, the cluster of stone buildings is completely hidden from view. But lucky guests (Mèlisses sleeps up to 12, in four separate suites and apartments) enjoy wide-angle vistas of sea and sky, sun-dappled hillsides and herb-scented gardens. Two saltwater infinity pools seep into the blue horizon, and stone steps lead down to a secret jetty and a few deckchairs wedged between the rocks – perfect for early morning dips or idle afternoons. Bedrooms and indoor-outdoor living areas are simply but harmoniously decorated with antique armoires, carved wooden beds, art and cookbooks, vintage photos, and flea market curios. Every detail seems to have naturally found its place. But it’s the food that takes Mèlisses to another level. Weekly suppers, exclusively for guests, look as exquisite as they taste; the seasonal menu might feature green gazpacho, tomato fritters, and barbecued lamb, with most ingredients produced organically in the garden or on the island. Mornings might start with iced tisanes, Greek yoghurt, granola, baked apricots, just-laid fried eggs with sage, and a wedge of chocolate, pear, and hazelnut cake. Once you have tried a different three-course breakfast every day, you’ll never be able to look another hotel buffet in the eye.  Rachel Howard

The Vasilicos Caldera Santorini

The Vasilicos, Santorini

With just seven suites (all with mind-blowing views of Santorini’s fishbowl horizon), The Vasilicos has the intimacy and attention to detail you’d expect from a hotel that was not meant to be a hotel at all – yet it has established itself as one of the best hotels in Greece. Designed by bon viveur Vasilis Valambous as a summer house to host extended family and friends, restored by his daughter Daphne, and managed by her husband Makis, every inch of this terraced, cliffside residence has a story to tell. Bespoke beach towels feature a leaf print of the native metrosidiros plant. The homemade baklava is made to a secret family recipe. Bedside books are curated by Atlantis Books, a legendary local bookshop. The traditional architecture keeps the dazzling white rooms naturally cool in summer; there are heated pools for cooler months. Every door and window frames a different caldera view. Santorini’s volcanic landscape doesn’t just produce awe-inspiring vistas; it also yields astonishingly good wine. Private dining comes with expert wine pairings and minibars are stocked with award-winning wines from Vasaltis Vineyards, run by Daphne’s brother, Yannis. This is one impressive family affair.

Kalesma Mykonos

Kalesma, Mykonos

Understated is not a word usually associated with Mykonos , but the island’s vernacular architecture and pre-tourism way of life made a virtue of simplicity. Kalesma pays tribute to the soulful austerity of the Cyclades , spliced with an edgy modern aesthetic. Black and white interiors feature sand-blasted stone, weathered wood, and untreated marble, vamped up with horsehair lights by Apparatus, a Rick Owens double bubble sofa here and ceramics by Aleksander Vac there. The look is stealth wealth, the atmosphere one of discreet hedonism. All 17 suites, eight one-bedroom villas, and two larger villas have their own pool, so most guests don’t venture out to mingle at the open-air Aloni lounge before sunset. A fiery Burning Sun cocktail (mezcal, mastiha, grape juice, agave, and pepper) is a great way to kickstart the evening. There’s a weekly supper club exclusively for guests at Pere Ubu restaurant, where the wood-fired oven produces warm flatbreads to scoop up the crab and cauliflower taramasalata, and roast artichokes with house-cured anchovies, and smoky scallops with lemon and sage. One of the three Greek owners, Makis Kousathanas, Aby Saltiel and Sofia Kousathana, is often holding court, making you feel like a guest at a friend’s summer house (until a waiter slips you the eye-watering bill).

Four Seasons Athens

Four Seasons Astir Palace, Athens

The ‘Athens Riviera’ was coined in the late 1960s with the advent of the Astir Palace, a Modernist landmark on the pine-fringed Vouliagmeni peninsula. Once the lair of sheikhs and starlets, the hotel languished under state management for decades before the Four Seasons swooped in to smarten up its act. The ritzy revival lives up to the hype and now oligarchs and influencers stake out the poolside sunbeds and destination restaurants. (Our favourites are Michelin-starred Pelagos and Avra bar, both tricked out with maximalist aplomb by Martin Brudnizki). Glamorous but minimalist guestrooms are divided into two wings – the more subdued Arion and livelier Nafsika – but our money is on the private bungalows with plunge pools hidden among the pines. There’s not much of a beach, but guests have this prime stretch of coastline all to themselves. The sea-view spa has a soothing hydrotherapy zone, bliss on a rare cloudy day after one of the restorative treatments inspired by Greek herbal remedies. Be prepared to pay handsomely for all this opulence.

Amanzoe Greece

Amanzoe, Porto Heli

With its soaring colonnades and lashings of pale marble, Amanzoe bears more than a passing resemblance to the Acropolis in Athens . Ambitious, imposing, and yes, awe-inspiring, the main building is like wandering into a hilltop temple surrounded by water. At dusk, a firepit is lit on the floating veranda, just the spot for a sunset Martini. 38 stand-alone pavilions are embedded in the olive and cypress groves, with private pool terraces that overlook nothing but nature. Everything in the rooms is oversized yet understated, from the double-height ceilings to the twin dressing rooms, the complimentary minibar loaded with Greek treats to the sunken bathtub big enough for two. With four staff members to every guest, service is reverential but absolutely discreet. Although the gated grounds and private beach (a five-minute, chauffeur-driven ride downhill) are sealed off from the outside world, the 360-degree views of rolling hills and glittering bays create the impression that the entire Peloponnese is your playground. The vibe is serene to the point of sedate – but if you’re looking to switch off and be utterly spoiled there’s no better place in Greece.

Ammos Crete

Ammos, Crete

It’s rare to find a family-friendly hotel that does not sacrifice style for baby-proof convenience. But Ammos – a boxy little number bang on a sandy beach just outside Chania – is the definition of offbeat cool. In the seaside restaurant, the high chairs are almost an afterthought among collectable pieces by the likes of Studio Mama, Martino Gamper, and Pierre Yovanovitch. Owner Nikos Tsepetis and architect Elisa Manola are not afraid of bold patterns and forms, used to brilliant effect in the undulating marble lobby and 33 colour-blocked rooms and studios. Works by contemporary Greek artists decorate the walls and the drought-resistant gardens are also a work of art. Tsepetis is as obsessed with good food as he is with good design. The all-day menu covers all the Cretan classics, but breakfast at ammos is in a league of its own – everything is made from scratch, from the viennoiseries to the sourdough and spinach pie. Throw in a pool full of inflatables, a wholesome kids’ menu, and a playroom with six hours of free childcare, six days a week, and you can see why so many grateful parents never miss summer here.

Nikolaou Residence Aegina

Nikolaou Residence, Aegina

Less famous and glamorous than the neighbouring islands of Hydra and Spetses, Aegina has quietly attracted artists, poets, and aesthetes for decades with its radiant light, ancient ruins, and time-warp tavernas. Many of them were drawn to the island in the 1960s by Nikos Nikolaou, one of the great Greek painters of the 20th century. At his seaside home, Nikolaou hosted epic dinner parties almost every night, with the likes of César, Yannis Moralis, and Odysseas Elytis in attendance. Nikolaou’s nephew, the architect Theodore Zoumboulakis, has converted the dream house where he spent his boyhood into a guesthouse that revives the warm spirit and artistic temperament of his aunt and uncle. Surrounded by pistachio, fig, and pomegranate trees, the five studios are decorated with Nikolaou’s own artworks and antiques, bespoke furnishing and photographs by Zoumboulakis, and designer lights and objects from his family’s design shop in Athens. Nikolaou’s atelier (open by appointment to non-residents) is a beautiful time capsule, his paintbrushes, rare books, painted stones, and glowing nudes exactly as he left them. Across the road, a path through pine trees leads down to the sea. All this, only one hour from Athens by ferry boat.

  • Greece is famous for having stunning islands, and some of the most popular islands to visit are known for different reasons. One of the best greek islands i have visited to date..

One of the best Greek Islands I have visited to date. The standard island hospitality paired with authentic greek food and loads of white sandy beaches. I really had the most amazing time. Theres also many places to explore on the island so make sure you get a scooter or a car to go to all the extremities as there are some real hidden gems.

Great for a bigger island experience.

Great for a bigger island experience. Greek islands often have rocky beaches, this island had so many lovely beaches with bars, for something different. Great little bars and restaurants all around the water, and close to Hydra and the mainland.

Lindos view hotel.

Hotel in Lindos

It has a gorgeous view of the Lindos Acropolis and town. Minutes away from beautiful beaches and good restaurants. Quiet, clean and nice looking hotel. Any issues we had were addressed and taken care of right away. Same day laundry! Helpful, accommodating and friendly staff. Clean, nice rooms with great a/c. Nice pool. Good breakfast. This hotel is a home run- one of my favorite hotels we have stayed at in the Greek islands! They even supplied us with water and some treats from a local bakery in our room when we arrived.

Cycladic Islands Hotel & Spa

Hotel in Agia Anna Naxos

Lovely hotel in perfect location - walking distance to 3 lovely beaches, restaurants and bus stop. Warm welcome by Dimitra & Kiriaki the reception staff and they were always so helpful. Fantastic breakfast - Elizabeth takes such pride in her meals and cooks with love....greets guests each morning and explains the dishes she has prepared. We stayed at 6 Greek islands during our holiday and this was the best breakfast by far. Stella at the Day Spa is amazing, I had a very relaxing massage and facial.

Dimitra Boutique Rooms

This is an excellent property right on the beach. With a sea play area for kids and teens I imagine…. With a fabulous sea view restaurant. A few blocks from the center of town yet, most of the time quiet and relaxing. The owner/manager is very accommodating!! The hotel and restaurant are very eye appealing. So a great value for a romantic couples place so much more affordable than other Greek islands. And location is easy to drive anywhere on the island. Especially close to main city. Of Rodos.

Virtu Suites

Hotel in Agios Prokopios

Absolutely beautiful place, loved the boho vibe and all the decor. The room was the largest we've had on the Greek Islands and every single member of the staff was amazing. We did use the spa and had a few treatments and it was wonderful. The location was perfect, great beach right outside your hotel, lots of restaurants within walking distance and a few shops for any necessities. The restaurant at the hotel was good and very attentive. Everyone was there to help you have your best holiday.

Villa Elena

Very clean, spacious and comfortable apartment very close to Lixouri. Villa Elena location is perfect for Paliki region exploration and practical to reach Argostoli by boat and the north part of Kefalonia too when the road towards Myrtos is open. The owners are very kind and helpful. There is also a nice taverna right behind the house. Parking is available and reachable through a rather steep dirt access (which is definitely normal in greek islands). Certainly recommended!

Hotel Senia - Onar Hotels Collection

Hotel in Naousa

The best hotel we stayed at in the Greek Islands. Staff so kind and helpful. Respectful and professional nothing a bother we felt welcomed by family. The breakfast was gourmet with fresh cooked pasties and delicacies. As a coeliac they catered to my diet with an extensive arrange of fresh wonderful options. My husband could eat all of the variety of dishes he had so many choices from the buffet he didn’t want to leave! We can’t wait to go back !

Seaside A Lifestyle Resort - Adults Only

Agia Pelagia

We arrived at seaside as the first part of our honeymoon around the Greek islands. We had booked a shared pool room and were upgraded to a room with a private pool which was a lovely. The staff were fantastic. The hotel had beautiful views around the property with a high end finish throughout. We had a massage in the spa which was wonderful, however we didn’t use the spa facilities as this was an additional charge of £40 per person.

Ippokampos Beachfront

Amazing hotel! You are right on the beach, which was our goal for this stop on our trip to Greece. The service from the staff for both the beachfront service and breakfast service were both incredible. Hotel guests get a 50% discount on beach chairs, which was a nice perk on the Greek islands. You are a short walk to downtown and the port. The rooms are very compact, but this isn't an issue for a couple traveling fairly light.

La Playa Boutique Apartments

Very unique property right on the water & in the middle of one of the best beaches in Greek Islands, Masouri beach. The food was phenomenal & we could order our breakfast (or whatever else we wanted) to our room or down by the beach. Couple times we had dinner overlooking the water. The view was also amazing. We are world travelers and we could easily rate this in our top 3 hotel/vacation stays ever!

Elaia Boutique Apartments

I start by saying that the location is fantastic, It was a perfect vacation, Paxos is one of the best Greek islands in my opinion. The host was super helpful from the first moment we met him with great kindness, affection and professionalism. Every morning the apartment was cleaned. I highly recommend this accommodation since I am also a host I felt like home. I hope to go back one day.🖤🇬🇷 Greetings from Rome

Nikoletta Studios

Agios Prokopios

The best hotel room I have ever stayed in the Greek islands! - place is Super clean - very central ( close to the best beach Agios Prokopios. Close to the supermarket. Bus stop to the port And near the best tavern "giannoulis" - The room is ideal for 3 or 4. 2 seperated spaces for better privacy ! I will book here again and i recommend it 200% Natalia, Panagiotis & Kiria Kety

Psaras Apartments

Stalís

In a great location a short stroll from the beach and in the centre of everything. The apartment was very clean and one of the best we have stayed in in Greece (we have been to many places around the Greek islands and always choose basic Greek apartments, not plush hotels) and this was perfect. Lovely staff great communication from moment of booking to the date we arrived.

Dioskouroi Apts

Everything about this place is amazing, George, Maritina, and the rest of the family couldn’t do enough for us, we were made to feel part of the family. we holiday to the Greek islands quite a lot but have never experienced such a warm welcome. the apartment was great, and the pool and bar helped make it a perfect holiday. we are going back next year!!

Casa Cabana Boutique Hotel & Spa - Adults Only

One of the best beach hotels for adults that my wife and I have visited many times while traveling around the Greek islands - calm and highly comfortable. Chic hotel. Very delicious breakfast. Kind, responsive people who are able to find solutions in non-standard situations. Thank you very much for your support and great stay.

Maltezos Hotel

Hotel in Gouvia

The owner is extremely nice. We had to push our vacation a year due to COVID, and they agreed with no issue. They helped us get rides to and from the airports, explained about the busses, and suggested things to do. The rooms were very clean, better than the standard we've seen at family run hotels in Greek Islands.

Flair Naousa

Perfect location! Kostantinos our host was the best host we had on our month trip traveling the Greek islands. A big space for our two young boys too. We particularly liked the dual entrances the apartment offers and liked to enjoy a drink and watch everyone go by from the back stairs - a perfect stay!

Yayaki Spetses

Hotel in Spetses

The hotel is stunning, very tastefully decorated and pool area is amongst best we have seen on the Greek Islands. The owners Hannah and Karl are incredibly welcoming and went out if their way for us, helping with reservations and making some great recommendations. We will definitely come again.

Penélope Hotel

Hotel in Ialysos

We stayed for 2 nights, 1 day on the way back from the Greek Islands before our flight home. Excellent friendly staff. Lovely comfortable hotel. and pool area. Bar area is beautifully decorated with nice seating areas. Excellent cocktails. Would definitely book again.

Livanios Studios

Everything was great, This was the first totally flawless stay we have had, and we have been staying on hotels on many Greek islands for a decade as a young couple. We would totally recommend a stay here. The host loves what he does and this shows.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel

This hotel is in such a grand location. The sunsets over the water are magical. The room looked down onto the square below. The bar was beautiful, breakfast had a broad variety of food to try. Spetses is one of my favourite Greek islands.

The 18 Best Hotels in Athens, Greece

By Rachel Howard

The 18 Best Hotels in Athens Greece

It was only a handful of years ago that hotels in  Athens  were limited to grubby hostels and soulless chains. During  Greece 's economic crisis, developers swooped in as property prices plummeted, snapping up townhouses, office blocks, and empty lofts. And while  Airbnb  has transformed whole neighborhoods, it hasn’t stalled the capital's booming hotel scene. A new hotel seems to open in the center of Athens every week—from funky guesthouses and chic boutique hotels to restored neoclassical monuments and coastal resorts. Now full of lodgings so lovely that you’ll definitely want to stay for longer than just a layover, here are the 16 best hotels in Athens.

How we choose the best hotels in Athens

Every hotel on this list has been selected independently by our editors and written by a Condé Nast Traveler journalist who knows the destination and has visited that property. When choosing hotels, our editors consider properties across price points that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination, keeping design, location, service, and sustainability credentials top of mind.

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

One&Only Aesthesis

The latest milestone in the revival of the Athenian Riviera, Greece’s first One&Only resort offers an unstuffy approach to ultra-luxury. In its 1960s heyday, Asteria beach was a playground for socialites and starlets; many black-and-white Greek movies were shot in the Modernist bungalows and open-air restaurant. The new buildings follow the exact blueprint of the original layout, with 137 bungalows, villas , and residences scattered between lush gardens and the shoreline. Every guest has two dedicated hosts, on-call round-the-clock (via What’s App) for super-prompt room service, restaurant reservations, padel and tennis sessions, or SUP lessons with the Greek national champion. The slim beach is not the best swimming on the Athens Riviera—but once you’re inside this cloistered enclave, you couldn’t care less. If you get antsy, the Acropolis is a 30-minute drive. Private museum tours and boat trips can be arranged. — Rachel Howard

Academias Hotel, Autograph Collection

A theme runs through this downtown 5-star hotel: busts of ancient Greek philosophers adorn the Plato lobby bar, and your key card comes with a quote by Hippocrates or Socrates. Guests are encouraged to switch off their devices daily for an hour and borrow a book from the library instead. But there are plenty of modern conveniences too: Simmons mattresses in the monochrome bedrooms, Diptyque amenities in the marble bathrooms, and a heated pool where black-and-white movies are projected in the wellness center. There’s a buzzy vibe up on the rooftop, where all of Athens stretches before you while you knock back spicy margaritas, seabass ceviche with lotus root chips, and duck and sweet potato croquettes at Japanese fusion restaurant Nyx.

The name is no gimmick: this neoclassical mansion is actually a listed monument. Designed in 1881 by German architect Ernst Zilller, who shaped “modern” Greece’s 19th-century capital, its restoration was overseen by specialists from the Ministry of Culture, who painted the delicate acanthus flowers on the ceilings and trompe l’oeil wooden staircase. It still feels like a private residence with just nine rooms and a deliberately intimate atmosphere. There’s soft limewash on the walls, brass lamps beside the dark wooden beds, and antique rugs in the enormous bathrooms. Staff are unfailingly lovely and always ready to make restaurant reservations, prepare the steam room, or book you a massage (ask for Thomas, who has magic hands). Our Epos room had a stunning veranda overlooking the Acropolis, Agios Demetrios church, and the sidewalk chatter of Linou Soubasis, one of the city’s hippest restaurants. You’re in the thick of the Athenian Renaissance here, yet a world apart. As our breakfast waiter Konstantinos said, while we lingered over Greek yogurt with fruit compote, eggs scrambled with tomato, and perfect cappuccinos: “This is a safe space.”

The Dolli Arrow

Originally a shipping magnate’s mansion and later a famous fabric emporium, this 1925 Plaka landmark has been reimagined as a hotel-Maison by Grecotel, Greece’s largest hotel chain. With its rounded corners and lofty windows, the ornate façade has been beautifully preserved; inside, the look is more flamboyant eclecticism—giant crystals, blobby bouclé sofas, art by Cocteau, Picasso, and Calder. From bijou doubles to vast connecting suites, guestrooms have soaring ceilings, gleaming marble bathrooms, and an air of extravagance. But the real scene-stealer is the roof terrace: the infinity pool creates the illusion that you’re floating in the Parthenon, which is just overhead. You can pick out all the city’s landmarks from the smart rooftop restaurant, where legions of assiduous staff serve a flawless, multi-course breakfast. Whether you’re into ruins or bars, flea markets or museums, everything is on your doorstep at The Dolli.

Sister hotel to Shila, Mona shares the same romantic aesthetic but with a sharper industrial edge to suit the downtown location. A converted textile factory on a graffiti-lined side street, Mona is surrounded by the myriad bars and boutiques of Psirri and the bazaar-like Athens central market. Open-plan bedrooms (and bathrooms—beware if you’re intimacy-averse) are like film sets, with antique daybeds, muslin drapes, and oversized velvet cubes tossed like dice on distressed terrazzo floors. Exposed concrete, pipes, and upcycled materials (a mattress on a stack of wooden palettes, a patio sofa fashioned from salvaged bricks) bring a touch of rough luxe, while hand-crafted ceramics and sensual photographs heighten the air of retro romance. Beautifully presented breakfast and a take-out menu are served in the glass-walled living room. Talented chefs from all over the world often pop up in the open-plan kitchen for supper clubs, while guest DJs and live sets occasionally commandeer the roof terrace, a gritty panorama of unpolished apartments with a glimpse of the Acropolis. Stay here, and you get instant access to Club Monamour, a members’ club for the city’s coolest cats.

xenodocheio Milos

Estiatorio Milos, chef Costas Spiliadis’ growing empire of  Greek restaurants , elevates extreme simplicity into a fine dining experience, treating the purest ingredients with the lightest, most precise touch. Spiliadis’ first foray into the hotel business is equally upmarket but unpretentious. Smack bang in the commercial and political heart of Athens,  Milos  hotel bears all the restaurants’ minimalist hallmarks: lashings of white marble, pale wood, and soft leather. Sleek and airy bedrooms are decorated with minimal fuss but fastidious attention to detail. Some suites have huge terraces overlooking the old Parliament. Facilities are limited to a small wellness and fitness suite, but it’s the food you come for: luscious Greek yogurt with granola and Kythera honey for breakfast, and dinner a tangle of bitter greens and a whole croaker baked in hand-picked flakes of rock salt, chosen from the extravagant seafood display. The ultimate treat: a private lunch on board Spiliadis’ yacht , Milos at Sea.

Gatsby Athens

Gatsby Athens

Sassy, playful, and pleasingly camp, Gatsby Athens is a fun addition to the booming hotel scene in the so-called ‘Historic Triangle’ (a warren of lively streets between Syntagma and Monastiraki squares). Compact but comfy rooms occupy six floors that have names like Cool and Lavish, instead of numbers. From the suggestive photos on the walls to the ‘after-sex’ room service menu, the vibe is a raunchy weekend or girls’ getaway. The penthouse Party Suite opens onto a roof terrace with a fireplace for chilly nights and a projector for private screenings in the  summer . The colorful lobby bar and restaurant, with picture windows overlooking a hip arcade, does a great weekend brunch, the perfect pick-me-up after too many of bartender Artemis’ Negronis.

Address: Gatsby, Lekka 18, Syntagma

The Modernist Athens

The Modernist

This quiet corner site once housed the Canadian embassy, but there’s nothing stuffy or starchy about the building’s thoroughly modern makeover. There’s almost Japanese attention to both form and function in the black-and-white rooms, whether they are S, M, L, or XL. (The higher the floor, the better the view). All the amenities (many of them on sale in the small concept store) are curated by Athenian movers and shakers: custom-blended teas, monochromatic ceramics, prints by local illustrators, and playlists by local DJs that you can blast on Marshall speakers. Simple breakfasts and wholesome bowls are served in the ground-floor café, an inspiring spot to hang out with your laptop. Deck chairs are lined up along the smart roof deck for sundowners (try the bergamot gimlet) overlooking the National Gallery and the city’s haphazard skyline. Consistently professional staff are never overbearing but always helpfully prompt. A slick operation in every sense.

It’s not so new any more, but this 2011 design hotel still packs a punch. The Brazilian Campana brothers have injected their signature favela chic and sense of humor into what was once a derelict downtown spot. Old furniture is upcycled in inspired ways, as in the lobby walls, which are clad in splintered chairs and tables. It’s all slightly mad, from the trippy, bronze-mirrored bathrooms to the hybrid chairs that look like giant marshmallows. Unfailingly professional staff are in the know about the latest designers to buy and restaurants to try. But the food here is so good that locals come for the weekend brunch with Croque Monsieur and Greek-style Bloody Marys, as well as sassy cocktails at the rooftop restaurant, which doubles as an art library. Very postmodern yet surprisingly fun.

The Margi Athens

Set back from the sandy bay of Vouliagmeni in the southern suburbs, the most desirable enclave on the Athens Riviera, the Margi has been around since 1960. But this easy-going, family-run hotel remains a favorite with the moneyed residents. You’ll find them schmoozing at Malabar pool bar or going for broke at Patio, a refined restaurant with just nine tables. Many ingredients come from the hotel’s organic farm. Neutral, wood-paneled rooms with pool or pine views are pretty snug, but guests spend most of their time at the sensational pool or the small, Asian-inspired spa . In summer, book a sunbed at the beach bar, Krabo, on a rocky cove just above the headland, where beautiful, bronzed Athenians make like they’re on Mykonos .

Ergon House

This isn’t just a restaurant with rooms; it’s an immersion in Greece’s culinary traditions from a modern, urban perspective. The ground floor Agora is a perpetually buzzy deli, roastery, bakery, and dining room with a four-story, hydroponic ‘vertical orchard’ on one wall and typically Athenian graffiti on the other. Prettily packaged Greek artisan foods also tempt in the rooms upstairs, which range in size from S to XL, with sleeping, living, and bathing areas defined by decorative cinder blocks, terrazzo tiles, and walnut-wood frames. The food doesn’t quite live up to the dashing design, but you can assemble your own groceries in one of the communal kitchens. In the summer, local hipsters congregate at the rooftop bar, where the Parthenon can be glimpsed between the TV aerials.

Address: Ergon House, Mitropoleos 23, Syntagma

Grand Bretagne

Hotel Grande Bretagne Arrow

Sometimes only a classic will do. Presiding over central Syntagma Square since 1874, the GB is almost as much of an Athenian landmark as the Acropolis. Its salons have welcomed treaty-signing politicians, matchmaking socialites, and undercover celebrities. Despite several corporate takeovers and makeovers, it still feels reassuringly old-fashioned, all colossal chandeliers, antique paintings, and highly polished marble. A piano player tinkles away in the gilded Winter Garden, and the flawless cocktails at Alexander’s Lounge are still deliciously unadventurous. Perks for guests include an indoor and outdoor pool, a wildly expensive spa, a smart fitness center, an upmarket ‘corner shop’ that stocks silk blouses and leather bags by Zeus + Dione, and prime Parthenon views from the consistently excellent rooftop bar and  restaurant . Look out for the open-air movie screenings in summer.

Monsieur Didot

There are dozens of crumbling, turn-of-the-20th-century townhouses in Athens crying out to be transformed into charming B&Bs. Best friends Natalia Georgopoulou and Margarita Papaioannou have led the way with a thoughtful revival of this pale-pink property on a quiet corner of Kolonaki, the Knightsbridge of Athens. It still feels, and is run, like a family house: there are just six rooms, with calm, unfussy furniture and offbeat art that doesn’t overwhelm the building’s beautiful structure. The best rooms are The Tale, which has a separate entrance, and The Ode, a snug penthouse with a private sundeck. Ask Natalia to arrange a Greek wine tasting on the secret roof terrace or a curated walking or food tour.

AthensWas Arrow

If you want to commune with the ancient Athenians, this is the place—the only five-star hotel on the resplendent promenade that circles the Acropolis . The vibe is surprisingly calm and contemporary. Classical references are juxtaposed with modern design classics: black-and-white marble torsos hang above leather Le Corbusier armchairs. Accomplished Greek food—a salad of wilted greens with nut crumble and tangerine, scorpion fish ‘meatball’ soup garnished with bottarga, white chocolate tsoureki (brioche) with kumquat and Greek coffee foam—is served in the smart rooftop restaurant with a side of Parthenon views. Service can be patchy and the carpeted, wood-paneled rooms are a little somber for high summer, but you can’t beat the location.

The Foundry Suites

Hidden down a cul-de-sac, this former type foundry is clad in a patchwork of exposed stone, giant Crittall windows, and climbing plants. Inside, original industrial details are fused with mid-century antiques, bold wallpaper, and bespoke wood and metal bed frames and wardrobes. Perfect for long stays, the 12 rooms are more like loft apartments, with proper kitchens and sunny workspaces. A breakfast basket is delivered to your room or to the magical roof garden, where the Parthenon is visible between the foliage. Head up there to watch the sunset with lively Greek wines (one of the wine-obsessed owners has built a cellar in the basement) and wood-fired pizzas.

Address: The Foundry Suites, Sarri 40, Psyrri

Perianth Hotel

Perianth Hotel Arrow

The curved balconies of this Bauhaus landmark overlook the lively café scene on Agia Irini Square, named after the domed church that anchors the piazza. Inside, it’s a paean to the 1930s—all moody black marble, grey terrazzo floors, and tubular bronze lighting—with dusky-pink sofas, sage-green throws, and a dash of modern art to keep things fresh. Guests have free access to yoga , meditation, and martial arts classes at the deeply calming Zen Centre on the first floor. Detox with sliders and a spritz at the all-day restaurant downstairs, a prime perch for people-watching. With a savvy concierge to help navigate the surrounding bars, markets, and galleries, and the Acropolis just overhead, this is a smart base for exploring both ancient and modern Athens.

Address: Perianth Hotel, Limpona 2, Monastiraki

Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens

Four Seasons Astir Palace Arrow

The Astir Palace put the Athens Riviera on the map in the 1960s. After a glossy makeover courtesy of the Four Seasons, it’s back—and exactly what this up-and-coming coastline needed: a full-blown seaside hotel that isn’t stuck in the past. Subdued bedrooms epitomize stealth wealth (do pay the premium for a sea view, or better yet, book one of the bungalows tucked among the pine woods). High-rollers quaff Champagne cocktails in Martin Brudnizki’s trio of sexy restaurants, while their glamorous wives are cosseted in the huge waterfront spa, which has seriously effective facials and a hydrotherapy zone where you could happily wallow the whole day. The young and restless can whizz across the bay on water skis. But you could easily while away day after day on a floating sunbed, watching a parade of super-yachts drift by and dazzling sunsets over the Saronic Isles. Tricked out like an Art Deco ocean liner, Michelin-starred Pelagos is the best of several sensational sea-view restaurants.

Address: Four Seasons Astir Palace, Apollonos 40, Vouliagmeni

You could walk past this Twenties residence on a pedestrian street in upmarket Kolonaki and never know it was the city’s most soulful guesthouse. Step inside and it’s like wandering into the bohemian home of an art collector: there’s a softly lit salon with a Strauss piano, antiques upholstered in vintage fabrics, and a library of wonderful books you want to read. The two ethereal ground-floor suites have verandas shaded by a loquat tree. Up the marble staircase are four more enormous suites with velvet divans, floating beds, intriguing artworks, and sultry bathrooms with rough-hewn marble sinks (one even has a swing). Local chocolatiers, perfumeries, and coffee shops created delicious treats and toiletries in every room. The greatest surprise is the roof garden: an urban jungle of plants, day beds, and outdoor showers. Wonderfully idiosyncratic, this is a rare treasure that feels genuinely lived in.

Today: Top 10 best luxury hotels & resorts in Greece

Home to Apollo, Zeus and Aphrodite, ancient Greece was the birthplace of Western civilization about 4000 years ago.   Today, you can still trace the fingerprints of Greek history in the dozens of archaeological sites and museum collections that are scattered throughout the country. But Greece offers so much more than history. Its magnificent coastline is fringed by dazzling beaches while its mountainous interior offers untamed wilderness. Yet perhaps its greatest riches are the famous islands, where traditional Greek architecture intermingles with delicious cuisine, a colorful lifestyle, and spectacular scenery. Greece is also home to some of the world’s most luxurious hotels & resorts, and here’s my breakdown of the most exclusive places to stay in this wonderful Southern European nation.

The first fully-fledged five-star hotel in Greece, Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas put the sleepy fishing village of Elounda in northeast Crete on the map in 1971. The property includes several mini-resort-like clusters, like the Yachting Club, whose state-of-the-art bungalows have electric sliding glass doors and retractable television screens, and the Ambassador’s Bungalows, with private gyms. There are also multi-room villa options for families. Guests can enjoy the peace and quiet of two private beaches, a treatment at the acclaimed spa Espace Vitalité Chenot, or a delicious meal at one of seven world-class restaurants. 5. CALILO, IOS

The mission of Calilo is to offer a product where architecture and art are used to uplift the lives of guests by providing them with a joyful, positive, carefree, and playfully quaint physical and emotional environment to relax, let their guard down, think less, and feel more. Rising out of, and carved from, the native rock, Calilo is cradled by 1,000 acres of protected land and fringed by a beautiful golden sand beach, lapped by a cerulean sea.   In a remote corner of unspoilt Ios, in the heart of the Cyclades, and just a pebble’s throw from party islands Mykonos and Santorini, this 30-suite sanctuary offers an escape from the crowds. Think sun-drenched seclusion surrounded by an ancient olive-pricked landscape – nature and art at its heart.  F rom its architecture and interior design to the striking artworks and installations, Calilo – an acronym for “create a life you can fall in love with” – is the creation the Michalopoulos family whose aim is to preserve, protect and nurture this tantalizing land and to share the island’s mesmerizing magic.

The Greek Islands are having a moment—and the best hotels in Greece are ready to meet that moment. Temperatures are beginning to drop in the northern hemisphere, triggering the awakening of spring and eager vacationers who have been quick to book flights for a long-awaited summer on the Med. The excitement is poised to continue as large hotel operators are expanding in the ancient country, with One&Only Resorts announcing their latest opening in the Greek island of Kéa opening later this spring, and InterContinental Resort Crete announcing the development of its first property on the island, which will open in late 2024.

Vogue ’s Guide to the Best Greek Islands Hotels:

  • Where to Stay in Milos: Skinopi Lodge
  • Where to Stay in Antiparos: The Rooster
  • Where to Stay in Sifnos: Verina Astra
  • Where to Stay in Mykonos: Kalesma
  • Where to Stay in Patmos: Pagostas
  • Where to Stay in Therasia: Perivolas Hideaway
  • Where to Stay in Crete: Ammos
  • Where to Stay in Rhodes: Marco Polo Mansion
  • Where to Stay in Andros: Mèlisses
  • Where to Stay in Kea: Kea Retreat

It’s no surprise Greece is growing in popularity within the travel industry: From history as old as time to a scenic Aegean coastline (the longest stretch on the Mediterranean) and island-hopping filled with bustling tavernas and the warmth of Greek hospitality, Greece has more than enough cultural attractions to fulfill our longing for far-flung travel.

Below are the best hotels—from tried-and-true favorites to newcomers; large luxury hotels to charming boutique stays—to book this summer on the Greek Islands.

Skinopi Lodge, Milos

Everything We Know So Far About the 2024 Tony Awards

By Alexis Bennett Parker

If you’re seeking a break from blue-and-white architecture and lively tavernas, book a stay at Skinopi Lodge on the island of Milos for a few days of escape. While it takes some off-roading to get to the property (a four-wheel drive vehicle is highly encouraged), it will have been well worth the trek (it’s a short one, to be sure, as the property is located a stone’s throw from the main town of Plaka). Wake up in one of the seven minimalist stone villas atop grassy cliffs that overlook the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Then, spend a quiet afternoon reading ensconced on the lounge chairs outside your villa, or take the winding stairs down the cliff to your own private watering hole.

Amenities: Private deck to the sea, free parking on site, fully equipped kitchens, organic vegetable garden

Editor’s tip: Ask the owner, Nausika, to draft you a localized itinerary of the best beaches according to the island’s winds that day.

Address: Skinopi 848 00, Greece

Verina Astra, Sifnos

Image may contain Wood Summer Pool Water Nature Outdoors Sea Scenery Landscape Beach Coast and Shoreline

Foodies won’t want to miss visiting the tiny island of Sifnos, arguably the best gastronomic destination in the Cyclades. Staying at Verina Astra is what farm-to-table dreams are made of. Tucked on a quiet hill in Poulati overlooking the castle, it’s a short two-mile drive from Artemonas, the most beautiful village on the island. At Verina Astra, you’ll have all the local must-sees of Sifnos at your fingertips. The property is adorned with local pottery (a heritage craft on the island that dates back to 3000 BC) and features a restaurant that serves as the perfect introduction to Sifnos cuisine with locally-grown produce, most of which comes from their own orchard.

Amenities: Free parking, spa, restaurant, bar, pool, family rooms, hiking trails, rocky beach access

Bonus tip: The hotel partners with local artisans for travelers interested in booking pottery classes with the island’s master craftsman, where you’ll spend two hours making your own pottery and learning about the traditional techniques while accompanied by an interpreter.

Address: Poulatis, Sifnos 840 03, Greece

The Rooster, Antiparos

Image may contain Chair Furniture Indoors Interior Design Table Architecture Building House Housing and Patio

The island of Antiparos’s low profile affords travelers a more exclusive getaway than its busier neighbor, Paros. With its guarantee of seclusion and privacy, the island has become a celebrity haven (so much so that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson bought a home there). To be sure, the island has gotten buzzier with the opening of luxury boutique hotel, The Rooster in 2021. The hotel was designed to exist in harmony with its surroundings. It puts an emphasis on respectful tourism by way of wellness, sustainability, and organic food. Guests have 17 individual houses to choose from, each with its own private sundeck providing the best sunset views on the island. Using natural materials, lime-wash walls, and earth-tone decor, The Rooster offers a laid-back approach to a very high-end stay.

Amenities: Free parking, spa, fitness center, pool, restaurants, bar, free breakfast, beach access, boutique

Editor’s tip: Ask the staff to pack you a picnic basket to take down to the rustic and service-free beach at the base of the property.

Address: Livadia Bay, Antiparos 840 07, Greece

Kalesma, Mykonos

Image may contain Indoors Interior Design Chair Furniture Bed Architecture Building Penthouse Door Housing and Cup

New this summer to Mykonos is Kalesma, a design-forward hotel dreamed up by two Greek designers who aimed to create a traditional Cycladic property with a modern spin for hedonists who value privacy and being off the beaten path. Set on a hilltop overlooking Ornos Bay, the hotel’s 27 luxe accommodations are spread across five acres of a lush hillside. The property features furniture by designer Rick Owens and one-of-a-kind decor by local Greek craftsmen. The hotel’s restaurant, Pere Ubu, sits at the property's peak, a privileged vantage point where you can catch the sunrise and the sunset from the same spot.

Amenities: Free parking, restaurant, bar, pool, private chapel, boutique, spa, fitness center

Editor’s tip: No need to leave behind your furry friends because the property is pet friendly!

Address: Aleomandra, Mykonos, Mikonos 846 00, Greece

Pagostas, Patmos

Image may contain Floor Flooring Architecture Building Hotel Indoors Interior Design Chair Furniture Bed and Lamp

Maria Lemos (of fashion wholesale agency Rainbowwave and the beloved London shop Mouki Mou) and her husband Gregoris quietly unveiled Pagostas, a three-room guest house hotel, last year on the paradisal island of Patmos—and it’s since become the fashion crowd’s best-kept secret. Set within a jasmine-scented courtyard and walled garden designed by renowned landscape gardener Helli Pangalou, they preserved the traditional architectural features of the monastic guesthouse, with its stone walls, vaulted archways, and terracotta floor tiles. The three large guestrooms are filled with furniture made by local carpenters and sourced at antique markets, with textiles hand-loomed in Athens and glasses hand-blown in Crete. Guests are encouraged to make themselves at home in any of the various shared spaces—especially at breakfast, which is served anytime and anywhere.

Amenities: Free breakfast, dining room, rooftop terrace, garden terrace, street parking

Editor’s tip: Before heading out each night, don’t miss out on sunset drinks on the furnished rooftop terrace overlooking Chora.

Address: Patmos 885 00, Greece

Perivolas Hideaway, Therasia

One nautical mile west of Santorini, opposite the village of Oia, lies the tiny island of Therasia, accessible via boat departing from Ammoudi Bay. While Perivolas Hideaway may look familiar in its design that marries the same minimalist principles of its Santorini sister property, it is optimally carved into the base of a cliff where it meets a cove, providing even more intimacy and the elemental luxury of waking up with the sea at your feet. Rounded archways and sumptuous white interiors enhanced with subtle pops of pink and purple (a Perivolas signature) make up the four airy rooms, each boasting unobstructed views of your private beach, which is equipped with sea sporting equipment, like kayaks and water skis, as well as snorkels and diving equipment. Along with the various sundecks scattered throughout the property, there’s also a spa and a salt water pool–but with a location like this one, do you really need that?

Amenities: Private beach access, terraces and sundecks, daily meals prepared by in-house cook, spa, board games, books & movie library, pool, private helipad, private boat dock, on-site water activities

Editor’s tip: All meals are prepared by the in-house chef and included in the cost of the booking so you never have to leave the property.

Ammos Hotel, a family-friendly beachfront hotel located on Crete’s sandy Glaros beach in the village of Chania, is a unique confluence of art and hospitality. A collection of eclectic contemporary art pieces by Muller van Severen, Pierre Paulin, and Faye Toogood fill the property’s public spaces, while 33 minimalist rooms equipped with a kitchenette and furnished balcony or terrace are scattered around fragrant gardens of jasmine and pomegranates. An all-day menu (as well as a kid’s menu) offering Greek classics with a twist are served anywhere–from the airy and quirky Ettore Sottsass-filled dining room, to the mid-century pool reminiscent of a Slim Aarons photograph. Despite the cool design vibe here, there’s nothing pretentious about Ammos Hotel, which is ultimately a family hotel with a friendly atmosphere– evidenced by its most beloved employee: a Boston Terrier named Jonny.

Amenities: Free on-site parking, restaurant, rooftop bar, gym, pool and kid’s pool, beach access, dedicated kid’s play area

Editor’s tip: Don’t miss the sourdough breads and pastries baked fresh every morning courtesy of the hotel’s new bakery in town, Red Jane .

One and two-story cubist villas surround the hotel’s multiple gardens and patios with large terraces that extend into private outdoor spaces. The indoor-outdoor restaurant, featuring fresh and colorful Greek cuisine, can be enjoyed poolside or beachside with the vibey tunes of the house DJ drifting on the breeze. After a long day in the sun, the spa awaits, offering a range of holistic treatment options, as well as a glass-walled sauna that overlooks the lush courtyard and a domed hammam.

Amenities: Restaurants, bars, spa, gym, library, concept shop, pool, private beach

Editor’s tip: Don’t miss the morning yoga sessions held on the open-air yoga terrace or the beach pavilion.

Marco Polo Mansion, Rhodes

While you’re not staying here for its modern amenities, there’s a familiar sense of warmth that permeates the intimate atmosphere at Marco Polo Mansion, a small boutique hotel located on a cobbled backstreet in the old town of Rhodes. That feeling that you’re staying at a friend’s home is likely the result of the warm hospitality from the family that runs it. Set within the walls of an old Turkish house are 10 bohemian-style rooms flooded with color and character, thoughtfully decorated with wrought-iron beds, tiled floors, and woven Bavarian rugs collected from the family’s travels. Many of the rooms surround the secret garden, where a memorable breakfast is served to guests each morning under the fragrant shade of orange and lemon trees. But the best part is that hotel guests have a standing dinner reservation at the hotel’s restaurant–ask anyone on the island and they’ll tell you it’s the best seat in town.

Amenities: Free breakfast, restaurant, secret garden

Editor’s tip: At dinner, don’t miss the standout dishes: the shrimp dolmadakia and the fish Giouvarlakia, which is a fish version of meatball soup.

Descending down a winding dirt road (four-wheel drive vehicle encouraged!) on the rugged western coast of Andros, you’ll find Mèlisses, a small family B&B ensconced within fields of fruit trees and fresh herbs and spices, and the property’s own fragrant garden stocked with seasonal vegetables that’ll surely make their way onto your plate throughout your stay. The simple joys of life at this isolated hamlet lies in savoring the slow beauty of your wild surroundings. Mèlisses comprises five simple bedrooms, each with sea views, spread across the main house and secluded private guest houses. Along with the two salt-water pools, stone steps descend to a rocky platform that leads directly to the sea. A property blessed by such a surfeit of God’s natural bounty, it’s hard to imagine things could get better here, until you make your way to the kitchen-living room, which is managed by the gracious host, Allegra, whose background in hospitality and gastronomy is evident as she cooks, guides, and runs workshops on the property with a natural warmth and ease. While you’re ways away from the throngs of civilization (the closest village is located 20 minutes away), you’ll never feel alone here, especially in the mornings where you’ll congregate among other guests for a shared breakfast over a long wooden table scenically set and prepared by Allegra.

Amenities: Two pools, free breakfast, meals upon request, vegetable garden, private sea access, open-space kitchen/living room

Editor’s tip: Consider booking one of Allegra’s creative retreats , ranging from cooking, painting, to floral workshops.

Onar Andros is an eco-retreat located on a protected wetland on the east side of Andros. Following a bumpy drive to this glamping sanctuary overlooking the majestic Achla Beach, you’re greeted by the friendly staff, clad in their own T-shirts and flip flops, immediately setting the tone for the casual atmosphere of the place. Luxury takes on a new meaning here–while there are no modern facilities, like a spa or fitness center, the beauty of its 10 traditional stone cottages, pool deck, and shaded lounge areas framing the lush natural landscape, as well as the delicious meals prepared using ingredients plucked from the hotel’s organic farm, will surely make you forget about all that. Best yet, a three-minute walk alongside the river that runs parallel to the property leads guests to the famed crescent-shaped Achla Beach, famous for its white sands and crystalline waters.

Of the lesser-known islands in the Cyclades, the tiny island of Folegandros has always stood out for its abundance of breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and traditional villages. This season marks the unveiling of the island’s first luxury 5-star resort, Gundari, located in a bird wildlife reserve on the southeastern coast, just a short distance from the main village of Chora. The hotel hosts 27 suites and villas, made of stone that was excavated on-site, with private solar heated infinity pools cascading over the cliffside. Elsewhere on the property, guests will find a cliff-edge main pool featuring a swim up cocktail bar and three additional dining spaces, which include the main restaurant and two bars curated by Greece’s first Michelin-starred chef, Lefteris Lazarou, who uses ingredients sourced from Gundari’s own organic farm, offering a true farm-to-table experience.

Amenities: Spa, gym, restaurant, bars, pool

Editor’s tip: Forget a boring rental and explore the island in style with an electric mini moke or electric Fiat 500, which are both available for rent at the hotel.

One&Only Kea Island (May 2024)

Just a 30-minute boat ride from Athens, Kea has long been a favorite weekend getaway for Athenians. Following the success of One&Only Aesthesis, the One&Only brand’s first resort in Greece, which opened on the Athenian Riviera in 2023, they’re unveiling their first property on the Greek Islands with One&Only Kea Island with direct speedboat transfers available between the two resorts. In keeping with the brand’s ultra-luxury alchemy, One&Only Kea Island promises discretion and seclusion within its 63 villas perched above a protected cove on the wild west coast of the island. Each of the contemporary villas swathed in white marble and wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor terraces with private infinity pools and fireplaces, were designed by acclaimed architect John Heah to showcase the panoramic views of Kea’s dramatic landscapes.

Amenities: Spa, gym, restaurants, bars, pool, family rooms, kid’s programming

Editor’s tip: Don’t miss a sommelier-led wine tasting at Èpicora wine bar, where you can taste a wide selection of Greek wines paired with artisanal cheeses and local charcuterie.

Odera Tinos (May 2024)

Modern luxury has finally made its way to the lesser-known Cycladic island of Tinos, with the inauguration of its first luxury hotel, Odera Tinos. Odera’s 77 modern rooms feature furnished terraces with cascading plunge pools blended so seamlessly into the cliffside above Vourni beach that they feel as though they’ve always been a part of the landscape. This was precisely the idea for Studio Bonarchi, the design team who honored local craftsmanship using the island’s raw materials so as to not disrupt the authentic style of the island–a commitment reflected all throughout the hotel’s interiors, which used traditional Tinian stones and local marble furnishings. As Tinos is also a beloved foodie destination and a farmer’s island, the hotel’s various food and beverage offerings nod to the timeless Cycladic specialities of the island– even down by the beach bar, which will serve a selection of local finger foods and fresh crudos .

Amenities: Pool, bars, restaurants, private beach, spa, gym, private chapel, boutique, conference room, free on-site parking

Editor’s tip: The restaurant’s extensive selection of Tinian wines will provide an excellent introduction to wines from the island.

Address: Vourni beach, Tinos 842 00, Greece

Plus, your Fora Advisor can score you all sorts of exciting hotel and travel perks, like complimentary room upgrades, property credits and more.

The best place to stay in Greece: 12 excellent choices

With dozens of tropical islands, ancient cities and stunning natural scenery, a lot of places can claim to be the best place to stay in Greece. Here are twelve of our favorites.

1. Athens: where to stay in Greece for first-timers & foodies

Image courtesy of The Dolli at Acropolis

Athens is where you should go in Greece for the first time . The capital offers opportunities to explore Ancient Greek culture — like the Acropolis or the National Archeology Museum — while also enjoying the allure of contemporary Greece, like boutique shopping in Plaka or getting off the beaten path in Hydra on a ferry trip.

Athens is also home to a highly diverse (and delicious) food scene, with flavorful and fresh ingredients as well as a blend of both Mediterranean and foreign influences. While other places in Greece arguably have a better foodie reputation, you won’t find a wider variety than in Athens.

(Sidenote: San Sebastián, one of the best places to visit in Spain for first-timers , also has glorious gastronomy to explore.)

The best places to stay in Athens: The Dolli, King George & more

The boutique hotels in Athens are among the best in Greece. The Dolli — which opened at the start of 2023 — is already one of our favorites with its chic, contemporary vibe and glorious views of the city. The King George, a slightly more traditional boutique hotel, checks many of the same boxes. Plus, there’s a rooftop restaurant with an incredible view of the Acropolis at night.

Plan and book your trip with Fora for the full report on the best place to stay in Greece’s capital — and to unlock exclusive perks along the way.

Fora Perks at The Dolli at Acropolis:

Complimentary air & concierge services.

Fora Perks at King George, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens:

$100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

2. Crete: the best Greek island for variety & culture junkies

Image courtesy of Minos Beach Art Hotel

If you want a beach-friendly island setting while you culture dive, Crete delivers. Some of the island’s urban centers have a reputation for erring on the touristy side, but if you venture out, you’ll be rewarded with some of Greece’s most stunning landscapes and charming towns. For instance, Chania and Heraklion are the most popular places to stay in Crete, but smaller seaside towns like Rethymno offer a more authentic experience for culture enthusiasts.

The island was once home to the ancient Minoans, but has since gone through many cultural revolutions as the influence of varying European and Mediterranean factions has waxed and waned. And yet, Crete has maintained a singular identity throughout the millennia.

This rich history — coupled with a gastronomy that meets (or in some circles, exceeds) Athens’ — has made Crete one of the most unique places to visit in Greece . Of course, this also makes Crete one of the best places to stay in Greece.

(Want to learn more? Check out our 10-day Crete itinerary .)

The best places to stay in Crete: Minos Beach Art Hotel, Amirandes & more

If you’re looking for the top hotels in Crete , Minos Palace Hotel & Suites, which overlooks the town of Agios Nikolaos and Mirabello Bay, is a great choice. On the other hand, if you’re searching for something a little more family friendly, Amirandes, Grecotel Boutique Resort might be better.

As always, when you connect with Fora , your advisor can help you decide where to stay in Crete based on your preferences.

Fora Perks at Minos Beach Art Hotel:

€90 food / beverage credit, complimentary bottle of wine, upgrade & extended check-out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Amirandes, Grecotel Boutique Resort:

$100 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

3. Mykonos: the best place to stay in Greece for luxe nightlife

There may not be a better place to experience peak Greece nightlife than Mykonos, which is held in similar esteem to that of Ibiza and Amsterdam. Mykonos’ beach parties are nonstop, diverse and legendary. Rows of upscale bars, nightclubs and beach clubs line Mykonos’ cosmopolitan center, and you'll see tons of fine restaurants and boutiques, too. (Check out places to eat and drink in Mykonos .)

While Mykonos largely caters to a more affluent crowd (it’s a favorite among celebrities), the island has also garnered an overtly friendly and inclusive reputation. It's also very LGBTQ+ friendly. And don’t worry, if you’re not interested in a 24/7 party, there are plenty of spots that have a more relaxed vibe outside of Chora, the main town (our travel guide to Mykonos has more intel).

Where to stay in Mykonos: Kalesma, Cali, Santa Marina & more

If you prefer some distance from the hustle and bustle of Chora, Kalesma and Cali are two of our favorite hotels in Mykonos. Both have the intimate vibe that makes luxe boutique hotels so special, along with a trendy, modern feel. Plus, both are just far enough away from the more electric areas of Mykonos that you can enjoy relative peace when you like — or join in the festivities on a whim.

Hotels like Santa Marina and the Myconian Korali Relais & Châteaux place you much closer to the action. We recommend booking accommodations in Mykonos, especially around Chora, as early as possible, because the island has limited capacity despite its incredible popularity.

Fora Perks at Cali Mykonos:

$100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenities, one complimentary beach club boat transfer, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Kalesma Mykonos:

$100 food / breakfast credit, welcome amenities, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort, Mykonos:

$100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenities, complimentary round-trip airport transfers, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Myconian Korali Relais & Châteaux:

4. Santorini: wineries, iconic architecture & gorgeous views

Image courtesy of Andronis Luxury Suites

Santorini is one of the best Greek islands for couples , and its wineries and stunning scenery make for an intimate escape. Santorini’s villages are instantly recognizable for their whitewashed buildings and sapphire-domed roofs. Narrow, winding streets will take you to charming shops and restaurants, while Santorini’s natural beauty surprises at every turn: volcanic beaches, a massive caldera, turquoise-blue waters — not to mention the world-class sunsets.

Like Crete, Santorini is one of the more visited destinations in Greece, so it can be a little touristy in spots. But we still think the romantic backdrop (the sunsets are amazing) and historic setting are worth checking out.

(P.S. Here are some ideas for how to spend 3 days in Santorini .)

The best places to stay in Santorini: Andronis Luxury Suites & more

Plenty of hotels make the cut for the best places to stay in Santorini . It can be a little confusing to navigate these properties, though. For example, a few brands like Andronis — Andronis Luxury Suites stands out as one of our favorite hotels in Santorini — and Katikies have half a dozen hotels or resorts, each catering to different tastes.

If Santorini is feeling like your (romantic) destination — some of the best resorts in Greece for couples are here, after all — we recommend planning your trip with Fora to get the accommodations that fit your preferences.

Fora Perks at Andronis Luxury Suites:

Complimentary air & concierge services

Fora Perks at select Katikies properties:

Breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Which is better: Mykonos or Santorini?

These two islands have totally different audiences. While Santorini does have a noteworthy nightlife, it’s significantly more relaxed than the high-energy clubs and beach parties that have made Mykonos popular. On the other hand, there are plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy Mykonos’ scenery — but there aren’t many towns to explore.

It often comes down to personal preference and the type of trip you desire (we can help you figure that out!).

5. Rhodes: the best place to stay in Greece for families & adventurers

Rhodes makes a case for being the best place to stay in Greece because of its variety of options. The nightlife is lively, the architecture is captivating, the beaches are gorgeous and there are tons of excursion opportunities, like tours of the nearby islands Halki or Symi (see more things to do in Rhodes ). Plus, Rhodes’ proximity to Turkey has lent it a unique, East-meets-West cultural blend.

The Medieval City of Rhodes , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the island’s most famous site, and well worth a visit even if you’re only passively interested in historical settings.

While the Rhodes' nightlife is certainly energetic, it’s not nearly as adult-oriented as Mykonos, making Rhodes one of the best Greek islands for families .

Where to stay in Rhodes: Rodos Park & Caesars Gardens Hotel

Rhodes doesn’t have as many hotel options as some of the other islands, but there are still a few places worth a visit. Rodos Park is an upscale boutique hotel on the northernmost tip of the island, and is only about a 15-minute walk away from the former site of the Colossus of Rhodes .

If you want a more private retreat, Caesars Gardens Hotel & Spa is much more remote, yet still offers luxe accommodations and beautiful views of the eastern Mediterranean.

Fora Perks at Rodos Park:

$50 spa credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Caesars Gardens Hotel & Spa:

$90 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, upgrade & late check-out whenever possible.

6. Thessaloniki: the “Culture Capital” of mainland Greece

Image courtesy of The Modernist Thessaloniki

Over a weekend in Thessaloniki , you will enjoy a blend of rich historical legacy informed by Byzantine and Ottoman heritage and a youthful culture cultivated by the city’s extensive student population. In other words, the port city is one of the best places to stay in Greece for cultural immersion and exploration.

The ruins and influences of many different empires can be found throughout the city, along with a bevy of trendy coffee shops, cafés and restaurants catering to younger generations.

The Modiano and Kapani markets are also must-stop destinations for foodies. The range of options leaves nothing out, and you’ll find fine-dining spots not far from to-die-for street-food stalls.

Thessaloniki makes for a great base camp for exploring northern Greece, and cool sights like Mount Olympus , the beaches of Halkidiki and more are all easily within reach.

Where to stay in Thessaloniki: The Modernist & Hyatt Regency

The Modernist and the Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki are two of our favorites. Both provide a luxurious home away from home while you indulge in the city’s many attractions.

Connect with Fora to plan and book your stay today. And because Fora is a member of Hyatt Privé , when you book Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki with us, you’ll unlock VIP perks.

Fora Perks at The Modernist Thessaloniki:

Welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade & late check-out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at the Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki:

$50 food / beverage credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade & early check-in whenever possible.

7. Corfu: once the favorite retreat of an Austrian empress

Image courtesy of Domes of Corfu

Like Santorini, Corfu offers plenty of variety — albeit with a more relaxed vibe. Historical tourism is one of Corfu’s biggest attractions ( Old Town , especially), but there’s something here for everyone. For instance, many of Corfu’s beaches cater to sightseers and relaxation seekers, while a few are great for adrenaline junkies looking to jet ski across the crystal-blue waves of the Mediterranean (read our 6-day Corfu itinerary for more things to do here).

Corfu’s vibrant, olive-grove-filled landscapes somehow manage to stand out in a country known for its tropical vistas. This may be why Empress Elisabeth of Austria commissioned the construction of The Achilleion Palace — one of Corfu’s most majestic landmarks — in the late 19th century.

Eager to visit Corfu? Connect with Fora to start planning your Grecian getaway, complete with expert intel and travel perks.

Where to stay in Corfu: Domes of Corfu & Domes Miramare

Domes of Corfu and Domes Miramare top our list of favorite places to stay on the island. Both are luxurious and offer picturesque ocean views and beach access. The former caters to couples and families, while the latter is exclusively adults only.

Fora Perks at Domes Miramare, A Luxury Collection Resort, Corfu:

Fora Perks at Domes of Corfu:

$100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

8. Paros: the best place to stay in Greece to get off the beaten path

Image courtesy of Summer Senses Luxury Resort

Paros offers many of the things that make Greece so fun to visit, but it also has a more rugged, boutique vibe. The more developed areas still see a ton of tourism in warmer months, but Paros also retains its authenticity more so than some of the busier islands.

Paros is a great spot for travelers who love to get off the beaten path . While the island is still lively in the populated parts of the island, like Parikia, Paros’ diverse terrain has made it a fun spot for adventurers. Kite surf off the coast, plan a day trip to the quaint fishing village on Antiparos — or take a guided tour through its popular caves — relax along Paros’ laidback beaches or simply stroll through the cobblestone streets of Parikia.

Where to stay in Paros: Summer Senses Luxury Resort, Parīlio & more

Summer Senses and Parīlio are two of our favorite resorts on Paros. Both feature a sophisticated vibe, emphasis on rejuvenation and designs inspired by Paros’ laid-back and unique historical setting.

Need more options for where to stay in Paros, Greece ? Check in with Fora.

Fora Perks at Summer Senses Luxury Resort:

$50 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Parīlio, a Member of Design Hotels:

9. Zakynthos (a.k.a. Zante): an intriguing alternative to Mykonos and Santorini

Image courtesy of Lesante Cape Resort & Villas

Zakynthos, sometimes called Zante, offers the charming urban exploration and views of Santorini along with the lively party vibe of Mykonos. It’s a happy medium between the two more popular islands, and arguably the best place to stay in Greece if you want to stay at an exclusive beach resort.

Want more intel? Check out our guide to exploring Zakynthos, Greece .

Where to stay in Zakynthos: Lesante Cape Resort & Villas, Olea All Suite Hotel and more

There are a few high-end resorts on Zakynthos that provide a picturesque escape from the rigors of contemporary lifestyles — two that stand out are Lesante Cape Resort & Villas and Olea All Suite Hotel. The two hotels only host a few dozen rooms combined, ensuring an exclusive — and luxurious — stay.

Fora Perks at Lesante Cape Resort & Villas:

Fora Perks at Olea All Suite Hotel:

Breakfast daily, welcome amenity, upgrade & extended check-out whenever possible.

10. Milos: an underrated destination & one of the best places to stay in Greece for authenticity

Image courtesy of Domes White Coast Milos

Milos rarely tops lists of the best places to stay in Greece, and that’s a mistake. This gorgeous island is an idyllic choice for travelers seeking a quiet vacation amidst quiet fishing villages, rugged landscapes and pristine beaches.

(BTW: our foodie’s guide to Milos recommends several great places to try — or you can study our ultimate Milos travel guide for more suggestions.)

Where to stay in Milos: Domes White Coast Milos

This lavish, adults-only retreat promises stunning views, great food and perhaps most important, a breath of fresh air. The resort is also about halfway between two of Milos’ major settlements, so it’s a great base for exploration, too. Alternatively, our guide to where to stay in Milos has more options (or you can always check in with us!).

Fora Perks at Domes White Coast Milos:

$50 hotel resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

11. Halkidiki: beaches, history & luxe resorts in mainland Greece

Image courtesy of Ekies All Senses Resort

Split between three peninsulas in northern Greece, the city of Halkidiki is an intriguing destination for travelers who want to explore Greek ruins like the ancient city of Olynthos before retiring to a ritzy resort along the city’s beautiful coastlines.

Connect with Fora for the full lowdown on visiting Halkidiki.

Where to Stay in Halkidiki: Eagles Villas & Ekies All Senses Resort

Eagles Villas and Ekies All Senses Resort are our two favorite accommodation options in Halkidiki. Eagles Villas is a contemporary, villa-style resort, with many rooms featuring private plunge pools and five-star amenities. Meanwhile, Ekies All Senses Resort has an entirely different feel to it, with an elevated bohemian energy and emphasis on restoration and wellbeing.

Fora Perks at Eagles Villas:

Fora Perks at Ekies All Senses Resort:

€50 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

12. Naxos: a laid-back island offering variety, natural beauty & more

Another less popular island, Naxos mirrors Milos in many ways. The best of Naxos includes lovely mountain villages, stunning beaches (of course), ancient ruins and interesting museums. The island also has a surprisingly energetic nightlife centered on Agios Prokopios Beach, home to several beach clubs.

Where to stay in Naxos: Naxian Collection

Our guide to the best hotels in Naxos, Greece covers this in detail, but one hotel that stands out is Naxian Collection. This boutique property is family-owned, granting an authentic Greek experience while also pampering guests with luxurious accommodations.

Fora Perks at Naxian Collection:

The best place to stay in Greece: FAQs

Have more questions about the best place to visit in Greece? We have answers.

Or connect with Fora and an expert can answer all your travel questions and provide tailored advice.

Which destinations in Greece are ideal for summer travel?

Greece on the whole is an excellent summer destination. This is peak travel season for the country. If you have an aversion to crowds, you may also consider visiting in late spring or early fall (the shoulder seasons). The weather is still agreeable and there are typically fewer travelers.

Are there great spring break destinations in Greece?

The Greek Isles are awesome for spring break getaways…if your spring break lines up with the shoulder season. Some of the islands can still be a little chilly in early March, and many venues are closed for the season. As such, visiting Greece for spring break generally requires that you plan ahead.

What are the top 3 cities in Greece for travel?

This is a common question, but not exactly a fair or helpful one when it comes to travel. There are dozens of amazing islands and mainland cities competing to be the best place to stay in Greece.

In a general sense, though, Athens, Thessaloniki and Chania (on Crete) are typically the most-visited cities if you look at any given travel season. But this discounts the fact that many people visit specific resorts and islands, such as Mykonos, Corfu and Santorini. In other words, visiting Greece’s “top cities” isn’t really the best way to get the most out of a trip to Greece.

What parts of Greece have the most beautiful beaches? What about the clearest water?

Visit nearly any coastline in mainland Greece or the islands and you’ll be met with beautiful waters. However, there are exceptions, and unfortunately, some of Greece’s more popular beaches have been known to collect a lot of trash. But great options still exist on nearly every island and mainland coastline.

Where To Stay In Athens - Hotels In Athens - Plaka

Here is where to stay in Athens. This is a detailed list of the best hotels in Athens, Greece, for you. We’ve covered all the bases, from luxurious 5-star Athens hotels all the way down to the more budget-friendly.

Greece Travel Blog_Best Places To Stay In Greece

Athens, the capital of Greece, is not only a fantastic European capital to visit, with all its monuments, archaeological sites , and museums. It’s also a great place to live for longer periods too.

Digital nomads in Greece , remote workers, and full-time travelers that visit fall in love with Athens and often decide to spend longer than initially intended.

Whether you’re visiting for a short time or have decided to give life in Athens a try, this guide will walk you through the best places to stay and live in Athens.

In this article, I will tell you which are the best areas for night entertainment, the top hotels in Athens, taverns, and the best places to go shopping. I will also discuss where not to stay in Athens, those places that are not so convenient so that you have no doubts about where you should visit the next time you stay in Athens .

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

The Best Neighborhoods To Stay In Athens

This first section will look at the best places to stay in Athens for tourist purposes. This includes the best area to stay in Athens, Greece if you’re visiting Athens to discover museums and archaeological sites and the best areas for restaurants, nightlife, and even shopping.

We will also tell you about the most convenient metro stations you need to keep in mind to visit each of these Athens districts.

These neighborhoods in Athens are what we think are the best for you!

Most Picturesque Neighborhood In Athens: Plaka

A favorite area among tourists and locals alike is Plaka, often considered the old district area of Athens.

Plaka is a maze of picturesque alleys and narrow streets that host a variety of shops and markets. The beautiful cafes and tavernas are a must. Be sure to dine al fresco both in the summer months and in the cooler months.

Plaka is only steps away from the magnificent Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and several important museums. And there are many boutique hotels where you can stay . You can reach Plaka on foot from other central areas, including Monastiraki and Syntagma.

Plaka can also be very busy since it’s the best place to stay in Athens within the Acropolis. Although some of these central Athens hotels can be on the expensive side, you can find cheaper alternatives to staying in a hostel or a rental home. Otherwise, try to book early in order to find better fees.

In Plaka, most homes have a traditional Neoclassical façade, making the place one of the most beautiful places for street photography if you’re a fan!

Not far from the heart of Plaka, you can also spend some time visiting the old district of Anafiotika, which grew at the feet of the Acropolis many years ago. Anafiotika is the place where many immigrants from the Cycladic Island of Anafi (hence its name) settled many years ago when moving to Athens to build the government palace.

Although it is not easy to find a place to stay in the area, it’s definitely a fantastic place to visit when you’re staying in Plaka. You will be surrounded by a very tranquil atmosphere, and it will feel like you’re visiting a Greek Island .

How To Get To Plaka

The metro stations that reach the area are Monastiraki, Acropolis, and Syntagma.

Most Central Neighborhood In Athens: Monastiraki

Monastiraki grows around a central square that’s the beating heart of the city, Monastiraki Square. The picturesque area is a great place to hang out with friends, go shopping for souvenirs and bargains in Athens’ beautiful flea markets, and, of course, eat.

If you’ve come to Athens seeking to taste traditional meat platters, such as gyros and souvlaki, then you can choose any of the gyro joints in the alleys around Monastiraki and enjoy the best of Greece’s street food .

Monastiraki is also where people choose to go shopping; walking from Monastiraki to Syntagma Square along Ermou Street offers an outstanding shopping opportunity as several top-brand shops are located in the area.

Monastiraki is close to the beautiful Ancient Agora of Athens and Hadrian’s Library. There are plenty of rooftop wine and cocktail bars with amazing Acropolis views for you to choose from when it comes to nightlife. No matter whether it’s a romantic dinner or just a snack and a couple of beers, this is the place to be in town .

How To Get To Monastiraki

The central metro station is Monastiraki, right in the square.

Athens Most Hip Neighborhood: Psirri

Psiri, Psyrri, or also Psirri , is one of my favorite places to stay in Athens . It’s close to Monastiraki and Plaka, but it still preserves a unique, more boho atmosphere, making it an ideal area for younger crowds.

Nights come alive with colors, music, sounds, and evening food fragrances. In Psirri, you’ll be able to taste and experience the best of Athens’ nightlife by visiting the different bars, tavernas, and pubs that remain open until late at night, serving great local food and offering all the music genres you can possibly imagine.

Psirri is an ideal area for photographers who love to capture the bizarre and creative street art characterizing Athens during the last years. When in Psirri, look around with care and attention; the chances are that street art will surprise you!

This is arguably the best area to stay in Athens , Greece, for a vibrant combination of street life, nightlife, and Greek cuisine.

How To Get To Psirri

Also, to get to Psirri, the most convenient metro station is Monastiraki.

Syntagma Neighborhood

Athens’s most central and important square is Syntagma, the place where you’ll find the government seat of the country. Here, tourists and locals gather every morning to witness the change of the guard of the Evzones, the legendary Greek military elite.

Although the place is relatively central and well connected to many other areas in town, it’s also here where locals gather to protest and demonstrate, so it can be a bit of a nuisance to reach the area during the many common strikes that Athens witnesses every year.

Locals also meet in Syntagma, which is an important transport hub, which means that several bus lines have their stop here for those trying to reach the port, the airport, and more. Many tours pick tourists in the area, so it tends to be quite busy and trafficked.

Since Syntagma is easy to reach on foot from other Athenian neighborhoods, including Monastiraki, Plaka, and Kolonaki.

Some of the most exclusive, luxurious, and best boutique hotel options in Athens are located around this square too.

How To Get To Syntagma

You can use the following metro stations to reach the area: Syntagma, Acropolis , and Panepistimio. If you want to get to the airport by bus, you can catch the X95 bus at the square.

Athens’s Most Elegant Neighborhood: Kolonaki

Located at the stunning Lycabettus Hill base, Kolonaki is a glamorous area with stylish buildings, beautiful hotels in Athens, and some of the most exclusive shops hosting both international and local brands.

Nightlife is tranquil and relaxed but also exclusive. In fact, in Kolonaki, it’s possible to experience some of the city’s most sophisticated restaurants and bars.

Suppose you’re looking for a safe neighborhood with an elegant atmosphere but still surrounded by pleasant by, gorgeous cafeterias, restaurants, and 4-star and 5-star hotels in Athens. In that case, this is the best place to stay in Athens.

How To Get To Kolonaki

The most convenient metro stations are Syntagma and Evangelismos.

Koukaki Neighborhood

Koukaki is a residential area where it’s possible to live in the most authentic atmosphere of Athens. In the area, it’s possible to visit the Acropolis Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, and the fascinating Jewelry Museum of Athens.

How To Get To Koukaki

The closest metro stations in the area are Acropolis and Syngrou Fix.

Thisseio Neighborhood

A great area for young travelers, a stay in Thisseio will guarantee exciting things to do and tons of nightlife to enjoy. The neighborhood features dozens of cafés, cocktail bars, restaurants, and a well-known open-air cinema, Cinema Thisseio.

Interesting places within walking distance include Filopappou Hill, Kerameikos – Athens’ ancient Necropolis – and the Temple of Hephaestus inside the Ancient Agora.

How To Get To Thisseio

The closest metro stations in the area are Thisseio and Monastiraki.

Piraeus Neighborhood

Technically not part of Athens, the main port in the country, Piraeus, is a convenient place to stay if you catch a ferry to the islands.

Although the area is not the most beautiful you could choose, it can save you from an early metro ride when you need to be at the port on time. So, this would be the best location to stay in Athens if you need to catch an early ferry.

How To Get To Piraeus

To reach the area, the closest metro station is Piraeus.

Although you could find cheap accommodation in these areas, avoiding them is always wiser.

One good thing about living in Athens is that all the different neighborhoods are well connected with the metro. It’s effortless and fast to reach different corners of the city virtually no time.

The metro system can easily take you to the town center, even from the international airport Eleftherios Venizelos. It’s also possible to use the metro to reach the Port of Piraeus and board a ferry to one of the famous Greek islands .

The city also has an extensive bus network, and taxis are convenient and safe to travel between Athens neighborhoods . Due to the crucial motorways that connect different areas outside the capital, it’s also straightforward to reach the southern suburbs by the sea and explore the Athenian Riviera .

15 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Greece

From charming beach towns to idyllic islands, these places to visit in Greece are all the vacation inspiration you need.

master2/Getty Images

Let’s make one thing clear: No matter where you go in Greece , you’ll have a good time. The Mediterranean nation is filled with spectacular places to explore, from its historically rich cities to its charming inland towns, and, of course, across its famed islands . But if you need a little help narrowing down where to go next, here are 15 best places to visit in Greece.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

As both Greece’s capital and the nation’s largest city, Athens deserves at least a day or two of exploration. Visitors can head to popular attractions like the  Acropolis and Parthenon, but more modern neighborhoods like Exarchia, known for its bohemian flair, are worth checking out, too.

happytrip/Getty Images

There are hundreds of Greek islands to choose from, but one gaining more attention by the minute is the positively quaint Milos . Accessible via direct flights from Athens, this island is the place to go for total rest and relaxation. Come to explore desolate beaches tucked in between craggy cliffs, dine on octopus in cafes that are sprinkled across the island, and enjoy quiet evenings sipping local wine while watching the sun dip into the azure waters.

Jomerci/Getty Images

Looking for a more lively atmosphere? Head to Mykonos, an island known for always being a good time. Also accessible via direct flights from Athens, Mykonos is the place to be during the summer for beachside parties that stretch long into the night (and often into the next day, too). Of course, there’s more to the island than just parties. It's home to its fair share of gorgeous beaches and historical sites, including Kato Mili, a row of four massive windmills built by the Venetians in the 16th century.

Stefan Cristian Cioata/Getty Images

History buffs will love the town of Delphi, located about a 2.5-hour drive northwest of Athens. The community was home to the Oracle of Delphi , which people from all over the Mediterranean traveled to see. Here, visitors can still explore the Temple of Apollo's remains, along with several ancient theaters and stadiums preserved through the millennia.

Admire waters a shade of blue you never knew existed in the Halkidiki region, located in northern Greece. This area is best known for its gorgeous beaches, which come with equally alluring soft sand, so you can lounge about all day.

Kirsty Nadine/Getty Images

Find even more historical delights, visit Epidaurus, at the northeastern end of the Peloponnese. It’s beloved by archeology buffs for its Ancient Theatre , built in the fourth century B.C. to honor the god of medicine, Asclepius. And its still a place where visitors can watch live performances in the summer.

Sebastian Condrea/Getty Images

The seaside community of Gythio is admittedly quiet, but it's by far one of the best places to visit when you need to get away from it all. Filled with colorful homes and golden-sand beaches, Gythio is also favored for its sea turtles that come and lay their eggs.

Lara_Uhryn/Getty Images

For unbelievable views, pay a visit to Meteora, located in Thessaly. The area is made up of massive rock formations reaching toward the sky. Inside the gorgeous formations sit several monasteries , which made their way onto the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

GlobalP/Getty Images

Sifnos, a small island reachable by ferry from Athens, is another spot known for its relaxing atmosphere. Plus, it's filled with so many beaches, you can find a large patch of sandy shoreline all for yourself, even in the height of summer.

Igor Tichonow/Getty Images

Mix in island time with a quick geology lesson on Kefalonia. The island, located west of the mainland, is home to the Drogarati Cave , which comes with awe-inspiring stalactites and stalagmites hanging off the ceiling and jutting out from the sea floor, respectively.

Want to get a taste of Italy and Greece all in one go? Make your way to the stunning, romantic island of Corfu. Thanks to its proximity to its neighboring European nation, the island comes with plenty of Italian influence, reflected in its architecture, food, and way of life.

Thessaloniki

Find an urban escape in northern Greece with a visit to Thessaloniki. This port city is filled with historic sites like the White Tower of Thessaloniki and Arch of Galerius, along with world-class restaurants and contemporary art museums that will leave you inspired.

Messolonghi

Get a different sea view in Messolonghi, located on the western coast of Greece. This town sits on a serene sea lake, with many who live here still making a living off fishing in the area. And though the town has great historical significance (especially around the Greek Revolution), it’s still an under-the-radar gem for international tourists.

Make one more historic stop at Olympia , this time for a lesson in sports history. Located on the western side of the Peloponnese, Olympia was the site of the very first Olympic Games. Visitors can visit the ancient stadium and the temples of Zeus and Hera all in one trip.

Head to the eastern Peloponnese to the beautiful city of Nafplio. As Visit Greece explains, the myth behind the town is that it was founded by Nafplios, the son of Poseidon. Today, it's filled with ancient sites, including monuments and castles galore, all worthy of exploring on your next Greek vacation. Get packing !

Europe’s hotels dominated the rankings for sustainability. Here are the top six.

Tripadvisor, the world's largest travel guidance platform, has unveiled the winners of its annual Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Hotels Awards. It reveals this year’s highest-rated hotels in the world, according to its global travel community.

The company analysed 12 months of review data for over 1.6 million hotels listed on the site. As well as the overall Top Hotels category, hotels were also judged under the rankings of All-Inclusive, B&Bs and Inns, Family-Friendly, Luxury and Small and Boutique. This year saw the launch of three new subcategories; Pet-Friendly, Sustainable and Wellness.

Europe’s Most Sustainable Hotel Is In Denmark

Coming third place in the global ranking, Hotel Kong Arthur lies in a small cobblestone nook, just off the road that runs around Copenhagen’s historic lakes. Located in the Nansensgade Quarter, the hotel is close to Torvehallerne, Copenhagen’s finest food marketplace, and near Nørreport, Denmark’s busiest train and bus station. The hotel serves a Nordic breakfast that they described as “just as delicious as it is sustainable.”

Greece’s Most Sustainable Hotel Lies Along A Private Coastline

Ikos Odisia is the second hotel of the group to open on the Greek island of Corfu. “Breathe in fresh, forest air and saunter along soft, velvet sands, as you soak up the sun and culture along Corfu’s dazzling Ionian coast,” the Tripadvisor description reads. The hotel sits in a secluded bay across from globally-awarded Ikos Dassia, elevated for dramatic views across a private coastline.

UK’s Top Sustainable Hotel Praised For Eco-Conscious Efforts

The Hari is located in the upscale neighborhood of Knightsbridge, a stone’s throw from Harrods and the luxury shops of Sloane Street. All 85 glamorous bedrooms are the work of British interior designer Tara Bernerd, complete with plush velvet window seats, bespoke wooden flooring, Italian marble bathrooms and views of London's skyline. The luxury Belgravia hotel is Silver certified by EarthCheck, with several Tripadvisor reviewers commending the hotel for its ‘eco-conscious’ efforts.

Portugal Has Double Feature On The Most Sustainable Hotels Ranking

Croatia’s Most Sustainable Hotel Is Carved Into A Cliffside

Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik, which underwent a complete refurbishment in spring 2019, is carved into a cliff-side with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the mesmerizing Adriatic sea. The five-star boutique hotel lies just around the bay from Dubrovnik’s magnificent 6th-century Old Town. Set on a 30m-high cliff on Miramare Bay, it feels “as if you’re on your own private ocean liner,” according to the hotel.
