WHO IS OTE?

Over The Edge (OTE) is a Chicago area travel basketball organization located on the Northwest side of Chicago. OTE offers youth travel team programs to grade school level, and high school level (in our spring/summer session) students. OTE prepares grade school boys and girls to play competitive basketball at the grade school and high school levels. Our program is not affiliated with any high school feeder program.

Our philosophy is simple: we are "Over the Edge" on basketball fundamentals .

We place a heavy emphasis on sound ball-handling, man-to-man defensive skills and transition basketball. The cornerstone of our program is teaching proper shooting, ball handling and footwork fundamentals. Our coaches have been taught by one of the top shooting instructors in the country - Dick Baumgartner. We believe our shooting instruction is the best in the Chicago area. There is coaching continuity so that skills taught at the younger levels are reinforced and refined each year at each level.

We offer two basketball training programs:

Travel basketball for 3rd thru 8th grade  school boys   and girls interested in developing their  basketball skills for the high school level.

Clinics for travel players and school team players interested in improving their basketball skills.

TRAVEL PROGRAM

Our program develops players with sound fundamental and skill training. Not  only are players taught basketball fundamentals, but they are also  taught to respect the game as well as their teammates, coaches, referees, and opposing players.

Playing time is earned by those who work hard and make a commitment to improving their skills. We believe our playing time philosophy better prepares kids for their high school careers.

The 2023-24 fall/winter travel season will begin  October  11th and run through February 11th. Tryouts will be held in September at NEIU 3600 W Foster Ave. in Chicago. Days and Times and Registration  link are TBA.

Teams typically have two 90-minute practices a week between 4:30pm -9:30pm Monday-Thursday.   Exact times and location will be determined once tryouts are finished ,  and team rosters are complete.

Teams play an average of two to three one-day tournaments a month on weekends, usually within an hour's drive or less from Chicago. (3rd grade teams will play fewer tournaments)

The fee for the 2023-24 fall/winter travel basketball season will be changing for this season, for previous OTE, and new OTE players, based on our partnership  with New Balance. Family discount offered for families with 2 or more children on travel teams. The fee covers all practices and tournaments. Payment plans are available during registration. There is a one-time uniform fee that will also change with our partnership with New Balance, that includes reversible shorts, reversible jersey, sweatpants, hooded sweatshirt and gym bag. Announcement  coming soon.

OTE'S KEY FOCUS:

90 minutes at OTE:

  • Warm-ups and stretching.
  • Ballhandling
  • Shooting and shooting technique
  • Individual defensive skill fundamentals and defensive sets.
  • Individual offensive skill fundamentals and 5-out and pass-cut-replace offense.

OTE PROGRAM OVERVIEW FOR 2023 -24 FALL/WINTER SESSION

OTE IS OVER THE EDGE ON FUNDAMENTALS. WE PREPARE YOUR SON/DAUGHTER TO COMPETE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN OUR MISSION, AS OVER 95% OF OUR ALUMS HAVE GONE ON TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL. OUR PLAYERS STAND APART AT HIGH SCHOOL TRYOUTS BECAUSE OF THEIR COMMAND OF FOOTWORK, BALL HANDLING, SHOOTING TECHNIQUE, AND KNOWLEDGE OF OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES AND DEFENSIVE FUNDAMENTALS.

WE HOLD (2) 90 MINUTE PRACTICES A WEEK FOR GRADE LEVEL TEAMS.

OUR HOME GYM/ NEIU 3600 W Foster Ave., in Chicago

AFTER ABOUT A MONTH TEAMS WILL BE DIVIDED A/B AND START TO PLAY IN ONE DAY SHOOTOUTS (ODS) TOURNAMENTS AGAINST OTHER TOP PROGRAMS IN THE METROPOLITAN CHICAGOLAND AREA. THESE TOURNAMENTS ARE EITHER SAT OR SUN, 2 GAMES, AND FINISHED WITHIN 2 TO 4 HOURS. ALL THESE VENUES ARE WITHIN AN HOUR OF CHICAGO; ROMEOVILLE SPORTS COMPLEX, SCHAUMBERG SPORTS COMPLEX, WAUKEGAN, PLAINFIELD, WINTRUST SPORTS COMPLEX (BY MIDWAY AIRPORT), MONTINI HIGH SCHOOL (GIRLS OAK BROOK LEAGUE), HAMMOND SPORTSPLEX INDIANA, M14 AURORA, CONNECT 44 LOMBARD, WHEATON ACADEMY.

PLAYERS/FAMILIES SHOULD PRIORITZE OTE OVER ALL OTHER TRAVEL SPORTS AND SCHOOL SPORTS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAMES. PLAYERS MAY NOT PLAY WITH ANY OTHER TRAVEL BASKETBALL TEAM WHILE REGISTERED WITH OTE. WE WILL WORK AROUNG SCHEDULING CONFLICTS WITH SCHOOL GAMES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

OUR BASKETBALL PROGRAM USES A MERIT BASED PLAYING TIME PHILOSOPHY. AS A PLAYER PROGRESSES THRU OUR PROGRAM PLAYING TIME COULD BE REDUCED OR GAINED FOR SEVERAL DIFFERENT REASONS, THE COACHES WILL DECIDE BASED ON GRADE LEVEL AND GAME SITUATIONS THE BEST POSSIBLE ATHLETES TO COMPETE ON THE FLOOR AND FOR HOW LONG. WE FEEL THIS PHILOSOPHY BETTER PREPARES THE BASKETBALL PLAYER FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SETTING.

TO TRULY BENEFIT FROM OTE PROGRAM TRAINING, PLAYERS SHOULD WORK ON WHAT THEY’VE LEARNED AT PRACTICE, ON THEIR OWN TIME, BETWEEN OTE PRACTICES. ATHLETES WHO PRACTICE HARD AND WITH A PURPOSE WILL BUILD CONFIDENCE AND YOUR ATHLETE WILL SEE NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT.

THE PROGRAM SESSION RUNS FROM OCTOBER 11th, 2023, TO FEBRUARY 11th , 2024 , 16 WEEKS, WITH A TWO-WEEK  BREAK OVER THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.

WINTER TRAVEL BASKETBALL

The Columbia Ravens Winter Travel Basketball program is a premier, competitive organization based in Howard County, MD. The Travel Program is available to strong basketball players whose skills and interest are advanced beyond recreation basketball levels.

The program's mission is to provide an opportunity for youth athletes to play basketball in a competitive environment that focuses on fun, fairness, sportsmanship, teamwork, individual skill development, and personal commitment. The program affords dedicated basketball players the opportunity to compete with other players of the same abilities from nearby counties, cities and states. This allows the player to prepare for future competition at the Middle School and High School levels.

Travel basketball is best suited for those who are committed to improving upon their basketball skills. It is important to note that a competitive environment fosters a higher level of commitment from its participants and parents. Travel Teams typically practice at least two times per week for 1 1/2 to 2 hours and participate in at least two travel leagues with games each week plus weekend/holiday tournaments. Travel Basketball does not guarantee equal playing time during games. Playing time is earned through hard work and will be "fair" but not equal.

Registration Fees and cost for the travel basketball program are higher than the standard recreational programs (see Group Page).

Tryouts & Player Evaluations Required

One component of Travel Basketball is an evaluation process, which will result in some children not being picked for a team.

All prospective players MUST register for tryouts, attend the required number of evaluation sessions and be selected to participate in the program. (The Columbia Ravens organization does not have a Recreational Basketball Program).

Note: ** Tryouts for winter teams are typically held in early September to afford those players not selected for a travel team to pursue other opportunities in nearby Recreational Basketball League Programs.

The on-line Tryout Registration and Schedules can be located on the Columbia Ravens Basketball website at www.columbiaravensbasketball.com . There is no charge to tryout for a team. No payment is due for travel team play until after the player has been officially selected and team rosters are finalized.

Winter Travel Basketball is GRADE based.

Players will tryout for the team that corresponds to their current school grade as of September 1st of the "current" school year.

AAU/SPRING TRAVEL BASKETBALL

Travel and other related Cost

AAU/Spring Travel Basketball involves travel to and from weekend tournaments, which are local as well as out of county, state, etc. Parents are responsible for all travel cost associated with team activity and are expected to accompany their child to out of town events. Each player-family will be required to make the financial commitment to support the team’s plans including fundraising events to help offset individual costs. Cost are comprised but not limited to Ravens Registration fees, AAU membership, uniforms, gym time, tournaments, leagues fees, supplies such as first aid items and training equipment, etc.

Player Eligibility - AAU/Spring Travel

The AAU is a grade-based organization with age limitations within that division as established by the AAU. (Go to www.aausports.org then to the aau basketball section for additional information.)

Tryouts and Player Evaluations Required

One component of Winter Travel and AAU/Spring Basketball is an evaluation process, which will result in some children not being picked for a team.

Note : ** Tryouts are typically held in late Februrary or early March to afford those players not selected for a travel team to pursue other opportunities in nearby other Travel and/or Recreational Basketball League Programs.

The online Tryout Registration and Schedules can be located on the Columbia Ravens Basketball website at www.columbiaravensbasketball.com or at www.stonealley.com/program/CRB . There is no charge to tryout for a team.

There is no fee to register for Tryouts and No payment is due for travel team play until after the player has been officially selected and team rosters are finalized.

Boys Travel Basketball Teams

Boys Travel Basketball Teams

Fastbreak Sports’ travel basketball program is for players in 2nd – 9th grade who are looking for a competitive and fun basketball experience. Each player will have two opportunities to get better each week (one team practice, one skills session) in addition to games. Practices will be built around concepts that prioritize the development of the individual and the team, preparing for competitive game play on weekends.

Why play for Fastbreak?

  • DEVELOPMENT FIRST – Winning matters. But it’s not the only thing that matters. While our teams will strive to win each game they play, our program and coach’s first priority is the development of your child. Their skill set should be advancing day-to-day and week-to-week. Each practice and game should be allowing your kid to use new skill sets that will propel their game forward.
  • GAME TRANSFERRABLE EMPHASES – Our travel program is designed to teach principles and skills that make a difference in game play for your child. All skills are nice, but the skills and reads that translate into making a school team or getting more playing time are our main focus. It might take more time to teach, but we are going to emphasize man-to-man defense, offensive motion principles and other concepts that translate in game play situations.
  • GREAT COACHES – Your team will be coached by one of our amazing coaches with experience playing or coaching at the highest level. That coach will be with you for the entire season for practices and games. The best teams have continuity and grow together!
  • MORE THAN BASKETBALL – It’s about more than just basketball. Playing for Fastbreak means you are also being coached on how to be a great teammate, a great leader and elite competitor.
  • THE GEAR – As part of the travel season package ($1,995), all players will receive a full reversible uniform (jersey and shorts) along with additional gear such as: team sweatshirts, shooting shirts, socks, etc.

League Details

  • PRACTICES –   All players will have two opportunities to get better per week, with team practices beginning on October 28th, and running through early March. Teams will have a Saturday team practice (90 minutes) on the Upper East Side. Additionally, you can choose your weekday skills class, and those will begin in after Thanksgiving Break.
  • GAMES – Games will be played primarily on Sundays, with a possible Saturday. All teams are scheduled to play in the 55 Swish League in Manhattan. Game sites will be Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Financial District, and Basketball City (Pier 36).
  • December 3, 10, 17
  • January 14, 21, 28
  • February 4, 10, 11, 25
  • March 2, 3, 9, 10 (Playoffs – March 9 and 10)

SYA typically fields teams for Boys and Girls 5th grade to 8th grade. One of the many positive aspects of the SYA Travel program is its proven ability to prepare players to participate in high school level basketball.

The SYA Travel Program is intended for the advanced player — it is a competitive program.  Tryouts are held where coaches select a limited number of players. Not all players are selected.

Tryout schedule, as well as Open Gym schedule, is posted on the main Basketball home page, (please scroll to the bottom).

All questions regarding SYA Travel Basketball should be directed to Josh Purdy at [email protected].

Our families say that the biggest difference between us and other Fairfield travel programs is the practice organization. We offer TWO dependable practices per week. Our practice schedules are confirmed prior to the season so that you can plan accordingly, and then DO NOT change/cancel from week to week based on gym availability. We use private gyms rather than public facilities.

Our teams are competitive and geared toward the dedicated, year-round basketball player. We roster a maximum of 10 players per team. This season we will be competing in the Fairfield County Basketball League (FCBL) and each team will play 1-2 games per weekend. We will participate in non-league tournaments (3-4 games each) as well.

The Fierce is an AAU basketball program that is based out of Fairfield, CT.

Practice Schedule (November 13th - End of Season)

All NBBA teams will practice twice per week. In the Winter season, we adjust our format slightly to accommodate players who participate in CYO concurrently.

In the Fall and Spring Seasons, the format for NBBA practices is to focus half the practice on fundamental skill development and the other half on team concepts.

In the Winter Season, each team will have a Team practice that focuses entirely on team concepts. We ask that all players fully commit to attending team practices. (See schedule below)

The second practice focuses entirely on fundamental skill development, and players can choose the day and time that works in their schedule from week to week. (See the Skill Session Schedule)

All players receive the same amount of time working on fundamentals, skills, and team concepts in the winter season as they do in the fall and spring.

On a 70 degree day in mid-February, the Illinois Rockets 8th grade Red girls basketball team triumphed over three opponents to take the title at the FTG event at the Waukegan Fieldhouse.

Game One’s victory came at the hands of the Racine (WI) Elite.  The Rockets demonstrated strong transition offense as they pulled away to a 45-36 triumph. Game Two against Full Package’s 8th grade squad was a slugfest, with the Rockets ending on the winning side of the 29-25 final score. The finale featured a feeder team for Niles West High School.  The Rockets got their running game going in the second half, outscoring Niles West by 24 points for the 56-21 victory and the tourney title. Rockets players are Kate Chaparro, Ren Gradel, Gabi Melby, Kelsey Modaff, Grace Steffen, Maggie Stutelberg and Kiara Zamar.  Not pictured are Emma Parney, Margaret Snyder and Mia Van Someren.  The Rockets are coached by Michael Scholl and Drew Ondik (not pictured).

At Fusion School of Basketball we strive to challenge and offer each student athlete the opportunity to improve their basketball skills and gain game experience. We take pride in developing well-rounded athletes while stressing: academics, responsibility, accountability, fundamentals, teamwork, leadership, commitment, work ethic, respect and fair play that can apply both on and off the court. We welcome all serious basketball players who are committed and looking to get better both individually and in a team setting.

We place development FIRST and recognize that most athletes we encounter are not being taught proper fundamentals which isn’t giving them a fair chance to compete. We believe any athlete is capable as long as they are dedicated to the process and committed to showing up.

Fusion School of Basketball will be hosting travel teams this coming winter for boys grades 4 -8  & girls grades 5-7. The season will run from December - late Feb/early March. Any team doing well may have playoffs run later into March.

We expect every athlete to attend every practice and game. Athletes must attend practice to get playing time in games! Any known conflicts for practices or games should be told to the coach immediately. Missed practices are considered unexcused if notified the day of. More than 1 unexcused practice in a season results in immediate removal from the team. We only get around 10 practices for the whole season.

If your athlete is not feeling well, they will need a Dr's note/negative covid test to return. If your athlete is injured enough to have to miss practice, they will need a Dr’s note to return. We do not accept parent diagnosis. We understand that kids get hurt sometimes however we do expect your athlete to still come and sit in on practice even if they cannot participate. We only get 1 practice/week. We cover a lot of information in every practice.

Seasonal diversions in the fresh air: How to fall in love with Moscow in winter

Before hitting the banya take a warm shower so that your heart and blood vessels are ready for what comes next. It's not necessary to clean yourself with soap as your skin's natural oils will keep your skin from getting too dry. Some people rub essential oils into their skin. Banya goers wear special hats to protect their hair from the steam and laying down is considered by many to be the best way to enjoy a sauna.

Many people start out their steam on the lower level where the temperature is less intense. Immediately after each turn in the steam room you should take a shower, dive in the pool or roll around in the snow. If you don't rinse yourself off, the skin will absorb the sweat and with it all the harmful substances that have oozed out of your body.

Seleznevskie banya This Moscow bathhouse has been around since the mid-19th century. The atmosphere is authentic and the place has not been fixed up in decades, so don't be surprised if it looks a little rough around the edges. The upside is that you can find many of the finest traditions of the Soviet period in practice here (when banyas became very popular as a form of relaxation), the steam is strong and they have an enormous pool and a small cafe. Reservations are not required.

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.
