Why You Should Visit Steigen in Norway

Hiking · Norway

steigen norway

Steigen municipality is an area in Nordland, Northern Norway. Despite being located only a stone throw from world-famous Lofoten and having just as much to offer, Steigen and its islands are rather unknown, and off beaten track destination in Norway.

It’s quite incredible that this stunning region remains under the radar of most visitors to Norway!

The most obvious and best attractions of Steigen are golden-sanded beaches, dramatic mountain hikes and historic sites dating back to Stone, Bronze, and Iron Age.

We were blessed to spend a week in stunning nature of Steigen, and are happy to share the unforgettable experience of the area! We loved its peaceful hiking trails, relaxing beaches, and abundance of berries. Coming from busy summery Lofoten, Steigen awed us with tranquillity and unspoilt nature.

When visiting Northern Norway don’t hesitate to include a several days stopover in Steigen area, and  don’t miss the below!

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT STEIGEN NORWAY

OUR TOP ACTIVITIES IN STEIGEN INCLUDE:

#1 exploring Engeloya island #2 hike to Trohornet #3 exploring Bosanden beach #4 hike to Smatinden #5 visiting Brennvika beach #6 Lofoten Wall viewpoints #7 foraging for berries and mushrooms

WHERE IS STEIGEN AND HOW TO GET THERE

Steigen is a part of Nordland county, the same as Lofoten and Vesteralen islands. Hence, you probably suspect correctly that visiting Steigen can be easily included in your Lofoten or Vestralen trip!

Looking at the map you will see Steigen across the sea (to the right!) from Lofoten. Look for Engeloya and Hamaroya islands divided by Sagfjorden.

Relaxing with a view!

Getting to Steigen is fairly uncomplicated, with several options available.

#1 DRIVING is the easiest option. Coming from the north or south stick to highway E6 and take the Steigentunellen near Tommerneset.

#2 BUS AND TRAIN. The nearest train stations are in Bodo, Fauske and Narvik. Further, you can take the bus, route Fauske- Skutvika (journey time 4 hrs) bus line 100. Further exploration by bus can be planned using Travel Nordland website, keeping in mind that the internal bus connections are infrequent and often require interchanges.

#3 BOAT from Lofoten, route Svolvaer-Skrova-Skutvik, alternatively route Lodingen-Bognes. These two marine connections will bring you to the northern part of Steigen.

guide to Lofoten

#1 EXPLORING ENGELOYA ISLAND

Engeloya is the largest of Steigen’s islands. Surrounded by spectacular fjords (Sagfjorden, Vestfjorden) the island is home to amazing Bosanden beach as well as many other coastal hidden gems (at Gradusan, Indre Steigbervika, Hakvag).

Moreover, Engeloya is a hikers’ paradise, comparable to iconic trails of nearby Lofoten. Some of the best examples of local walks are Trohornet, Prestkona, Saetertinden and Tretindan (some of then described in detail further in this article!)

Apart from the stunning outdoors, Engeloya is home to charming villages (Alstad, Hamar, Solheim).

All these are available to enjoy thanks to a good connection with mainland by Bogen-Alstad bridge, and a web of good quality roads and under-mountain tunnel connecting Engeloya (and Steigen) with highway E6 (Fauske-Bognes). Moreover, Steigen is connected to Lofoten by 2 ferry routes, hence exploring the area while on your Lofoten holidays is quite easy.

#2 HIKE TO TROHORNET (VIA NONSTINDEN)

trohornet hiking trail map

Height: Trohornet 645 masl Time: 4-5 hrs Distance : 8.5 km Level of Difficulty: moderate/demanding Total elevation gain: 704 m Trailhead/parking: parking bay along road 7520, Molnhogda ( directions ) (<–click to use the interactive online map!)

Although Trohornet rises to modest 645 masl, its location at the northern tip of the highest mountain massif of Engeloya island makes it a perfect viewpoint and one of the best hikes in Steigen.

The trail to Trohornet is signposted and marked, hence very easy to navigate and follow, right from the start at the eastern end of the parking bay.

Initially dry and moderately steep path to Trohornet winds thru bushy woodland. After approx. 1.5 km the trail levels out as it comes to a spacious grassy meadow. At that point looking straight ahead, a grassy ridge comes in view. The trail slightly changes its character, becomes sandier and with loose stones. While it cuts thru the western slopes to climb to Nonstinden, the path offers breathtaking view to Pestkonestinden, to the west, across the lake.

The top of Nonstinden is a little bit off the main trail, but we still recommend venturing to this stunning viewpoint.

If you don’t fancy additional 50 m climb, skip Nonstinden and continue ahead to the spacious saddle at the foot of Trohornet. A word of warning: descent to the saddle is steep and requires navigating among loose stones; farther, at the opposite side of the saddle you’ll have to climb over very similar terrain. Keeping to trail markings (red dots and ‘T’s) makes the ascent much easier, as it takes you over more stable stones.

While concentrating on the steps, you’re likely to disregard the steepness of the ascent and suddenly emerge at the broad Trohornet summit ridge. The top is only a couple of minutes away, marked with a large cairn.

Ensure to explore the summit area for the best views. The most prominent landmarks seen from Trohornet are golden sands of Bosanden beach, Prestkonetinden (Prestkona), jagged shores at Gradusan, high mountain ridges of the southern Steigen. Of course, we can’t omit the jaw-dropping view to ‘Lofoten Wall’, a chain of mountainous islands stretching over horizon, directly to the north.

The best way to return is retracing your steps to the parking bay.

#3 EXPLORING BOSANDEN BEACH

bosanden steigen

Bosanden is one of the largest beaches of Steigen, located along the northern shores of Engeloya island. The beach is easily accessible by car, with large car park and newly built toilet block.

A walk along Bosanden is one of the most relaxing activities available in Steigen, the stripe of golden sand is over 1 km long and invites for a bare foot experience! It’s not uncommon to see small sailing boats and kayaks exploring the calm waters surrounding Bosanden.

bosanden beach steigen

Bosanden beach seen from Trohornet

Apart from the golden sand and turquoise water, beauty of Bosanden lies in its surroundings. The beach is in proximity of dramatic cliffs of Trohornet, while its eastern end is bordered by a cone of Mjeltinden. To the west, the beach gently transforms into a rugged coast with rocks and hidden sandy coves known only to the locals.

A day or afternoon spent at Bosanden may include a beach volleyball match (nets provided), and more importantly, during the polar day season the beach is a fine location for watching the midnight sun!

Responsible visitors may like to stay overnight at the beach and camp on the meadows that blanket Bosanden from the south.

#4 HIKE TO SMATINDEN (also called SMATINDANE or SMATINDERNE)

smatinden steigen

Height: Smatinden 875 masl Time: 7-8 hrs Distance: 13 km Level of Difficulty: demanding Total elevation gain: 766 m Trailhead/parking: parking along the track to Skihytta, off road 835 (Trolldalen) ( directions )

(<–click to use the interactive online map!)

Together with Hestdalstuva, Smatinden dominates the landscape of central land of western Steigen. The prolonged shape of the high ridge that homes Smatinden can be spotted from afar, and due to a telecom tower it’s easily recognisable.

Finding the trailhead can be troublesome, as the parking lot is located off the main road 835. Coming from Skjelvareid follow road 835 for approximately 5 km, look out for signpost to Ferdigplen and Skihytta, take the dirt road. When driving from the west the turn is also signposted. The dedicated car park is on the left hand side of the track, 1 km from the main road.

The exact location in Google Maps is 67.817985, 15.088478

During our trip to Smatinden we struggled to find the trailhead (we only had a very vague trailhead location description). For this very reason (to improve your experience) we’re sharing the detailed information and directions today!

Hiking trail to Smatinden follows a wide and dry track all the way to the telecom tower, initially it winds thru old forest, but higher up it steeply rises over dry slopes of rock and grass. The terrain is open and you should prepare to be at the elements mercy, whether the summer heat or wind and rain, once you leave the forest there’s no shelter from the weather.

You may feel that the walk to telecom tower is dragging, as the scenery and views don’t change much till reaching the ridge.

Don’t be too tempted to leave the track and follow one of the ski routes (marked with sticks), as some of them cross wet land (not a problem when frozen in winter, but may be troublesome in summer or autumn).

After about 2-3 hours you’ll come to the ridge and see the telecom tower. By no means has the hike ended at the tower. A path on the left side of the tower and utility buildings will take you to a stunning viewpoint. Enjoy the view to Smatinden still a bit farther along the rocky ridge. You can also get to the viewpoint from a small hill at the right side of the tower.

To climb to the top of Smatinden find a fain path that descends from the viewpoint, it’s steep and moderately exposed. Further, find your way along the rocky ridge to approach the steep summit of Smatinden. Neither markings nor path help with the final climb, and finding a way to the top can be tricky and exposed.

The best way back is retracing your steps to the tower and along the track to car park.

TIP: if you find climbing to the top of Smatinden too hard/intimidating, why not explore the high ridge and enjoy the top of Tretinden, at the opposite end of the ridge to the tower before coming back to low ground?

#5 VISITING BRENNVIKA BEACH (BRENNVIKSANDEN)

Brennvika is the longest beach in Steigen (over 2 km), and probably the most dramatically located. Find Brennviksanden at the westernmost tip of Steigen, a mountainous peninsula south from Nordfold. To the east and south Brennvika is walled by the massif of Kraktindan, the highest mountain of Steigen (1045 masl). Brenviksanden and surrounding dunes are under protection, hence please stick to paths and wooden walkways during your visit. Also, disappointingly staying overnight at the beach or car park is forbidden. Brennviksanden is a fine day trip destination, hidden in the shade of magnificent mountains it’s incredibly dramatic.

lofoten wall

Lofoten Wall (from Tretindan)

#6 LOFOTEN WALL VIEW (LOFOTVEGGEN)

Lofoten archipelago stretches for almost 200km, and can be seen from coastal locations and mountain tops of Nordland and western Troms. Due to the mountainous terrain the archipelago seen from afar reminds a wall. In fact, the Lofoten Wall is a known term in Northern Norway, and viewpoints to Lofotveggen attract numerous visitors. From our experience of Steigen, the Lofoten Wall was best seen from Smatinden/Tretindan and Trohornet.

#7 FORAGING FOR BERRIES AND MUSHROOMS

Steigen and its unspoilt nature can also be enjoyed in a culinary way. This tip will be useful to those of you who confidently pick wild mushrooms and/or wild berries. We don’t recommend foraging to those of you without experience and knowledge, however the abundance of ‘gifts of nature’ in Steigen is well worth a mention.

While roaming the trails and coastal areas you will be able to forage for wild mushrooms (especially boletus)  and berries (including crowberries, blueberries and even cloudberries)

Keep in mind that as per Norwegian outdoor code, a person is allowed to forage for their personal use only, and most importantly, is allowed to pick cloudberries only to be consumed on the spot.

Visit Northern Norway

Engeløya’s ancient past is laid bare on this Northern Norwegian Island

Travel through the ages on the island of Engeløya in Steigen, via a huge burial mound, unusual Iron Age military site, imposing stone church or towering memorial stone. Or let the golden lilies and melt-in-your-mouth Møsbrøm flatbread bring out the inner romantic in you.

Lush green fields, broad-leaved trees and well-kept farms. This island is warmed by the Gulf Stream and protected by huge mountains. You can see the Lofoten Wall from here and reach much of Northern Norway by boat. Not surprisingly, there are many ancient monuments too. A walk here is full of gentle beauty and treasures from the past.

The Sigarshaugen burial mound dominates the landscape

This huge burial mound, located adjacent to the church in the heart of the village, dominates the landscape at 3 metres (10 ft.) high and 35 metres (115 ft.) in diameter. Believed to have been built in around the 7th Century, it hasn’t been excavated, so we don’t know what is hidden beneath it. The homesteads of the lagmann, or judge for the Hålogaland region, were built above the mound from the Middle Ages until 1797.

Steigar Assembly was the meeeting place of the north

We know that the Steigar Assembly was held in Steigen in the Middle Ages, with people coming from all over Hålogaland, the Norse area of Northern Norway, for judgements, important decisions and to meet people. We don’t know when the assembly started, but it may date as far back as the Viking era.

Steigen Church has a long and varied history

It is no coincidence that the church is directly adjacent to the burial mound. This may have been a place of worship for the Vikings, where the chieftain made sacrifices on behalf of his people — and kept spiritual control of them. So for the Christians, it was important for the church to be built in exactly the same place. The eastern part of the church built in the 13th Century forms today’s choir. The nave is from 1869.

The oldest section of Steigen church dates back to the 13th c. © Knut Hansvold

Vollmoa is an Iron Age site of historical importance

On a pretty green plain near Steigberget is an unusual relic from Iron Age times. In 5–600 AD, there was a ring-shaped settlement of 16 turf huts on this site, excavated in the 1940s and now known as Vollmoa. Around the site are bowl-shaped cooking pits, where vast quantities of food were prepared and slowly spit-roasted. However, no other evidence of farming or female occupations has been found here, so it was a place for men only.

Engeløya was a centre for economic and military power

The site could house several hundred people, but we don’t know exactly what its purpose was. It could have been a training camp or barracks, used by the Steigar chieftain’s warriors at certain times of the year, at a safe distance from the sea. All we know is that no one lived here permanently. However, the dimensions of the site indicate a concentration of economic and military power in Steigen, based on trade and communication between Norse chieftains and the Sami.

Hagbard and Signe are Steigens Romeo and Juliet

The tragic love story of Hagbard and Signe is part of Steigen’s cultural landscape. Signe was the daughter of King Sigar of Steig. He had promised her to a Russian king, but she loved Hagbard, son of a Lofoten chieftain. He managed to meet Signe in secret, and they planned to flee to Lofoten, vowing to die together. But Signe’s slave girl raised the alarm, and Hagbard was sentenced to death. From his place of execution on the islet of Hagbardholmen, Hagbard saw smoke rising from Signe’s house; she had set it alight, and died with him. The saga of Hagbart and Signe is enacted every other year in the play Hagbard and Signe. Sigarshaugen, Hagbardholmen and the Signelillsteinen stone are all linked to the saga.

Steigen Lilies and other warm climate flora can be found at the vicarage

These days, the Steigen vicarage garden resembles a beautiful park, with trees such as oak, ash, horse chestnut, linden, maple and copper beech, normally found in warmer climates. But in the 1870s, it was a fertile garden with 600 different shrubs. The dean, Johan Karl Richard Wisløff, was a pioneer in Scandinavian gardening, and worked with the Botanical Garden in Christiania to find plants suitable for Northern Norwegian gardens. But the trees eventually grew too big, and the garden too hard to look after, so it fell into decay. An ornamental garden has, however, recently been created in the Steigen Rural Museum, containing many of the old favourites introduced by Wisløff. The most famous is the Caucasian lily (Lilium monadelphum), known as the Steigen lily in Northern Norway. There is also a nut grove above the vicarage garden, containing the world’s northernmost wild hazelnuts.

There is more than you think in Steigen

On Hagbardholmen, where, according to legend, Hagbard was executed, there are several burial mounds. Below Steinberget, in the west of the village, are the remains of boathouses with room for Viking ships as big as the Oseberg ship. The doctor’s residence has become the Steigen Rural Museum, with old houses from the area and beds of Steigen lilies. Home-made Møsbrøm flatbread, with a sweet brown-cheese sauce, sour cream and plenty of butter is a taste sensation not to be missed. It just might give you the energy to walk over Bøskaret to the next village, Bø.

You can Visit Engeløya by car

Motorists drive through the 8-km (5-mile) Steigen Tunnel from the E6, following the signs to Engeløya. Once in the village, though, you’re on foot, with marked trails that criss-cross the cultural landscape. Anything of interest is marked with a plaque. Steigen Rural Museum has regular guided tours and is also the best place from which to discover the paths around the village.

At dusk, the sea cabin at Manshausen, Norway.

Norway’s Arctic north: eco-cabins and sea eagles

A new activity resort brings guests right up against the wonders of the Arctic Circle, with floor-to-ceiling views over the fjords. Peter Carty is captivated by the flora, fauna and Norse mythology

I t is the largest raptor I have ever seen. The sea eagle flapping imperiously across the tree line has a wingspan of well over two metres. Each mighty wing is tipped with feathers like huge spatulate fingers, while the white plumage at its rear resembles exhaust smoke – fitting for this B-52 of avians.

The Steigen archipelago in northern Norway is almost as remote as it gets in Europe, lying 62 miles inside the Arctic Circle. Among other dramatic features, it is home to the continent’s largest colony of sea eagles. My base here is the tiny island of Manshausen, where a resort and activity centre has been created by polar explorer Børge Ousland – the first person to reach the North Pole in a solo and unsupported expedition – as a place for exploring “the harmony between people and nature”.

The resort’s design plays its part in this, with a strong emphasis on natural materials, chiefly wood. Its main feature is four sea cabins that look like outsize sound-system speakers jutting out from the island. The cabins have walls clad in larch and are of modular construction, with floor-to-ceiling glass wrapped around their fronts. Placing minimalist boxes into natural settings has become an architectural cliché. No matter. Manshausen’s designer, Snorre Stinessen, won several prizes at the Architizer A+Awards in New York for the cabins – and deservedly so. To go inside is to get as close as possible to all that is Arctic on the outside.

Manshausen, Norway

There are opportunities here for hiking, climbing, kayaking and diving, all of which can be organised by the resort. And then there’s the hot tub or the spa to relax in afterwards. Nevertheless, for many guests, simply sitting and gazing from the cabins will be top of the list of activities here.

Because there is a lot of space near the end of the world. The sea around Steigen has many shallows and it is sheltered from the full force of the Atlantic by the spiky crescent of the Lofoten islands on the horizon. The water is embossed with small waves and it has a chill glassiness which throws light back up at the sky. Dominating it all are the mountains, rearing up all about like the vertebrae of drowned giants. With nightfall come icy stars, in constellations the Norsemen worshipped and navigated by. And later – sometimes – there are strange sights in the heavens.

There are some fantastic hikes around Manshausen

Prising myself from my cabin, I take a hike on the adjacent island of Grøtøya, which is larger than Manshausen and is where I see my first sea eagle. On the five-minute boat ride over, I watch sleek cod and herring flipping about in water as clear as anything, before noticing that I am under observation myself from a big fat heron perched on a buoy.

My youthful guide from Manshausen, Sebastian, wears an eagle feather in his hat and has a deep acquaintance with local fauna and flora. Despite their formidable appearance, he tells me the eagles are not fearless. “Two days ago, I saw a crow chasing one of them away,” he says.

A white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) in flight with a catch (coal fish) in Norway. This picture of White-tailed Eagle with a catch was taken in Norway from a boat.

Grøtøya’s beaches are pale crescents of coral fragments. We crunch over them before walking inland to find groves of ash, birch and rowan, all trees which have been celebrated in Norse mythology. It’s not hard to see what inspired Viking scribes: the island has pockets filled with silences that feel intensely charged.

The rowan’s red berries, meanwhile, are out of reach (and unpalatable when raw) but there are alternatives lower down: redcurrants, bilberries, black crowberries and wild raspberries. Not to mention the juniper berries. “If you see a juniper bush with all of its berries ripe, it’s a sign that Doomsday is coming,” warns Sebastian. Fortunately, some of the fruit on our bush is immature and so earthly existence remains safe – for the time being.

View over the Steigen archipelago

We happen upon clumps of meadowsweet, also known as the mead plant. “The Vikings used its white flowers to make a spice for their mead,” explains Sebastian. There is a hut with a wildly overgrown turf roof, which is coated in lichen. Many lichen species are named for the shapes they suggest – Sebastian shows me beard, trumpet, coral and reindeer lichen.

Historically, Grøtøya was a supply and trading centre for fishing boats en route to Lofoten, 30 miles north. The Schøning family controlled much of the area’s trade. The last of their mansions dates from 1870 and was one of the most expensive homes north of the Arctic circle. It is now a museum, with original furniture and fittings on display in rooms that could double as stage sets for a production of Ibsen.

‘The northern lights often come out to play over Manshausen’

There is a bigger stage set up above. The northern lights often come out to play over Manshausen, but they can never be guaranteed. On the night of my arrival, they were outstanding – apparently. “Mainly green, with some red and orange,” says Sebastian. “I have never seen all those colours before.” Unfortunately, tired from my journey, I slept through the show. The next evening, I was more fortunate. At half past one, ribbons and streamers of pearly light were tossed down from Valhalla and glowed over the bay.

I visited in autumn but going in late spring or summer will mean experiencing white nights, rather than seeing the northern lights – at this latitude, night never falls from mid-May onwards, and the sun does not set at all in June and for a large chunk of July. And have I mentioned food? Manshausen provides self-catering facilities but meals are available from its main house on request – I enjoyed the freshest fillets of local halibut.

As well as winning plaudits for its architecture, Manshausen is bringing more tourists to Steigen. The archipelago receives less attention than the Lofoten Islands, but it is starting to gain in popularity, both because of the commercialisation of the latter and because of the ease of access by ferry from the mainland town of Bodø. There is plenty of room for visitors here and my trip made me hungry to explore more of this of heady combination of mountains, sea and wildlife.

On the morning of my departure, a pair of sea eagles swing by, high over my boat, as if in farewell. It was a fitting end to my sublime northern adventure.

For centuries a bustling fishing outpost in the far northwest corner of Norway, the private island of Manhausen is now a go-to destination for outdoor enthusiasts as well as home to the world’s largest population of sea eagles. Three of the four simple wood-and-glass cabins cantilever over crystalline waters, while one sits on a low ridge above, but all enjoy 270-degree views through floor-to-ceiling windows and residential-style layouts, with two bedrooms, small kitchen areas, and sitting areas for gazing out at the sea. Budget-minded visitors can book a sleeping alcove on the second floor of the Exploration Loft, which includes a communal shower, kitchen, and bathroom. Meals are served in the renovated main house where, on the second floor, guests can peruse renowned polar explorer and owner Børge Ousland’s personal collection of books in the library after an active day of kayaking, diving, fishing, or rock climbing.

The Lofoten Islands and Manshausen Sea Cabins: Nature & Culture in Harmony

In combination, steigen and the lofoten islands make up the perfect autumn or spring travel adventure for those seeking an authentic immersion in norwegian culture and tradition, nature, architecture, art and design..

September - April (*excl. Nov-Jan)

Best suited for

Those seeking to be immersed in Norwegian nature and culture, architecture, art and design

Lofoten is epic – nature on steroids! – featuring huge contrasts between dizzying peaks, bone-white Arctic beaches and pastures that form the foundation of some of the most incredible food. It’s also the Kingdom of the Weather Gods – the constantly changing climatic conditions, light and seasons are an attraction in themselves. With access to the right insiders, authentic encounters await you around every corner. From September to April, this is also one of the best places to capture the Aurora Borealis, and plunge into some Northern Lights photography.

The Manshausen sea cabins have received international acclaim for their unique design and dramatic setting. The place is now a world of its own, situated in the coastal area of Steigen, once an old trading post. It is also a dream realized by Norwegian polar explorer Børge Ousland.

Impact Statement

Travel like the locals on an express passenger ferry from coast to island, and get a sense of the authentic life of the Northerners - by travelling outside of the Summer season. Many of our partners have moved from bigger cities to these rural areas to breathe life back into the smaller districts, and counterforce the urban migration trend. Bringing people back to rural areas has a profound social, environmental and economic impact, and this is one method of contributing to the United Nations SDG 11.4 - ' Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage '.

Your itinerary

Itineraries are designed by our travel curators in collaboration with our partners to give you the most rewarding experience possible. Please note that itineraries can be tailored to your specific wishes, when you make an inquiry.

Welcome to the Steigen Archipelago

Crossing The Arctic Circle

Your adventure begins in Bodø, the gateway to Norway’s Arctic Circle region known for its street art and the local speciality; 'stockfish'. From Bodø, you will embark via local express passenger ferry to Nordskot and private boat to your island escape of Manshausen in the evening.

The nature at Manshausen is as encapsulating as its history; the island is steeped in heritage and was used for centuries as a trading post. The owner and visionary behind the buildings, Børge Ousland, also has a few stories of his own, having been on dozens of expeditions to both the arctic and antarctic including skiing to the North Pole!

Your base will be in a seaside cabin while you explore the frontier where the sea and mountains meet. On arrival, you will be treated to a local meal, where the menu is inspired by and sourced from the surrounding landscapes.

Winter Moods at Manshausen

The Island Escape

Polar Nights and Panoramic Views

Absorb the arctic sunrise over morning coffee from your window - it may be winter, but the lights and weather around these parts can shift constantly, like a kaleidoscope and there’s no better place to watch it unfold than at Manshausen.

The Manshausen sea cabins

How you choose to spend your days here is up to you. There is time to just be, perhaps to stroll around the island - it may be small, but there’s wild sheep, a dock, lots of coastline and even a beach! We recommend exploring the surrounding mountains or kayaking in the crystal clear waters arounds the fragmented islands - both with a professional guide who can help give you a better understanding of the area.

The evening can be spent in total peace, with no sounds but the nature outside your windows and maybe the turning page of a good book or the clink of a wine glass! Enjoy the island's stamp (wood-fired hot tub) and sauna - if you’re fortunate, the aurora borealis might be dancing overhead as you do so. If that's the case, make sure to plunge into some Northern Lights photography!

Norway's rawest playground

Lofoten and Beyond

After another full day at Manshausen, you will get back on the passenger ferry in the evening and head towards the Lofoten islands; a 2-hour voyage North across Vestfjorden.

First touch down; Thon Hotel Svolvær which is within immediate walking distance of where your boat journey ends.

Fishing boat in Lofoten

Sightseeing on Scenic Route Lofoten

Spend your morning getting a feel for Svolvær, the Lofoten island’s ‘capital’ or venture out on a fishing trip with MS Symra; a traditional 49-foot fishing cutter with a history dating back to 1917. During the traditional Lofoten season from the end of February to mid-April you may take part in ‘Lofotfiske’ and catch skrei (Barents cod).

With your own driver guide, you will travel through the Lofoten islands on Scenic Route Lofoten to the village of Ballstad. You will be guided through the picturesque landscape typical for the Lofoten islands. Stops along the way can include historical sites, beaches and mandatory photography opportunities that you cannot miss in Kabelvåg, Lyngvær, Hov and Henningsvær. You can sit back and enjoy the scenery while we introduce you to the fishing culture and history, plus a taste of Lofoten.

On arrival at Hattvika Lodge, local host Kristian and his team will stand ready to introduce you to their local playground. We’ll get you nestled in your home for the next 3 nights; a hillside lodge overlooking the island or one of the comfortable and rustic ocean-facing 'rorbu' (fisherman’s cabins). After you’ve had time to get your bearings, you may hop into the iconic sauna or outdoor hot tub, and gaze up in the starry polar sky! Dinner is served at Hattvika’s own bistro, Fangst.

Footprints in The Snow and Aurora photography

In the Mountains and Skies

Explore Lofoten on foot. The best thing about the colder half of the year – apart from the island not being as crowded as the summer months – is the spectacular colours and dynamic contrasts in weather and light. On foot, the area offers everything from light hiking in mythical Kyllingdalen to art walks at Eggum and hardcore climbing on peaks such as the majestic Skottind. We will work with you to find your perfect fit. Your professional mountain guide will be on hand to help you better understand your new playground. A packed lunch will be eaten at the summit of your chosen route. Lunch with a view!

Your current base is truly the place to practise your photography with a local pro. In the evening you will meet with a professional photographer who knows all of the island's nooks and the best places to witness the aurora borealis dance overhead.

Arctic Surfing or Artistic Immersion

For adventurous souls, this is your chance to get into the water and get the adrenaline pumping. Arctic surfing has been part of the Lofoten culture since the 60s when the first surfers found their way to Unstad bay. Wetsuit technology has revolutionized surfing in cold water which means a surf lesson in Arctic waters during Winter can be a surprisingly warm experience. A surf guide will guide you through an Arctic surfing lesson at your own level; enter the water, catch the waves, pop-up and action on wipe out. After a fun session in the waves, the sauna will be hot and ready for a steam.

Surfing in Lofoten with Unstad Arctic Surf

The Lofoten islands are also a destination where artists find residence; discover for yourself how being here triggers creativity. This day can also be spent exploring handicrafts such as glassworks, wool colouring and knitting, sausage and cheese-making or ceramics, or getting immersed in impressive local and international art collections.

Fly home or extend your Arctic week with a cruise onboard HMS Gåssten

Bid farewell to the locals and the archipelago as you depart from Leknes airport or extend your stay for another 48 hours whisked away on HMS Gåsstein, a lush vessel with all amenities needed for a relaxed sea voyage at the spectacular coast of Lofoten. The captain will steer the vessel down the peninsula into the outer and quieter reaches of the archipelago.

HMS Gåssten was originally built as a Minesweeper in the Swedish Navy in 1973, constructed with a wooden hull to limit her magnetic signature and the only boat of her class still afloat. She underwent a full refit in 2018/19 to provide a cosy atmosphere for eight guests in four wood-panelled, ensuite cabins whilst still retaining many of her original features, such as her beautiful exposed oak roof beams.

Enjoy freshly caught seafood in the spacious forward saloon and dining area after a day of exploration in the archipelago. Enjoy wild dining on the edge of the sea, soft hikes, golf, and horse riding along the rugged coastline on sturdy local horses.

Experience the realm of Norwegian folklore

Norway has a long and diverse history which can be found in the small villages and nature along the coast and countryside. Mari grew up in one of these villages, Beitostølen, close to Skåbu – Norway’s oldest village (and the highest settlement in Northern Europe). Spending time in small fjord and mountain communities allows time to truly be immersed in local culture and the realm of Norwegian folklore.

A guide to haugesund, norway, for cruise ship visitors.

Haugesund is one of Norway's most popular cruise destinations.

Located on the southwest coast of Norway, Haugesund is a historic town recognized as one of the country’s premier cruise ports. As a cruise port, it appeals as a gateway to exploring Norway's coastal landscapes and rich Viking heritage.

In 2023, the city welcomed 125 cruise ship visits, accommodating more than 370,000 passengers, thanks to its ability to handle some of the world’s largest vessels.

Among these, Iona , one of Britain’s largest ships with a capacity of 5,206 passengers, makes regular stops here as part of its P&O Cruises Norwegian fjords tour. European focused lines AIDA and Costa Cruises make occasional calls at Haugesund, as do Cunard and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.

Visitors can explore ancient monuments like the Haraldshaugen, stroll along the bustling waterfront, or venture into the surrounding countryside to discover serene trails and traditional farms.

Despite the rising number of visitors, there's no shortage of unique activities to explore on your own, away from the typical cruise line excursions.

For 3,000 years, nearby Avaldsnes was a pivotal Viking power center, dominating the essential "Nordvegen" sea route.

Actors play the roles of Viking Age people at the Avaldsnes Viking Farm.

Today, the Nordvegen History Center delves into its storied past, revealing rulers known from sagas, archaeological discoveries, and tales of the Norse gods. History here is preserved in an underground museum, brought to life through modern storytelling techniques.

A short walk from the visitor center, the Viking Farm transports you back to the Viking Age with live demonstrations inside and out of reconstructed buildings. The site is particularly engaging for families, offering a range of activities that bring history to life.

Local bus routes 209 and 210 serve Avaldsnes on Karmøy Island from the center of Haugesund, with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes. The history center is a 10-15 minute walk from Avaldsnes.

Visit Norway’s National Monument

Extend your Viking Age experience with a visit to Haraldshaugen, also known as the National Monument of Norway. This site commemorates the 9th-century unification of Norway under King Harald Fairhair, and is believed to be his burial place.

According to the medieval book of Norwegian royal sagas, King Harald Fairhair is said to be buried ... [+] here at the National Monument in Haugesund.

A scenic 45-minute walk from the cruise port through central Haugesund and its northern suburbs, the monument offers panoramic views of the North Sea and surrounding landscapes.

The area is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a quiet picnic, absorbing the region’s historical significance at your own pace. On the way, be sure to stop by the statue of King Harald Fairhair, staring out to sea opposite the city park.

If time is short, you can take the five-minute ride on local bus 231 from central Haugesund to the ‘Gard A’ bus stop, just a few minutes walk from the monument.

Enjoy a Boat Trip to Røvær

Escape the crowds of your cruise ship and downtown Haugesund by taking an enjoyable boat trip to the islands of Røvær to discover Norwegian island life.

Several daily ferries make the journey easy, allowing you to explore the island's diverse natural beauty on foot.

Climb to Bråvarden, the island’s highest point, for breathtaking views, or stroll along ‘Proposal Road’ to the Bridge of Love, where couples leave padlocks as tokens of affection. For a more relaxing day, unwind at the small beach or visit the Viking Age graves at Grønasvika.

Røvær is a small group of picturesque islands, home to just over 100 people.

Ferry tickets cost just 70 Norwegian kroner ($6.50) each way. Just be sure to double check the ferry timetable with Kolumbus to make sure you can get back to Haugesund in good time.

Downtown Haugesund

If you find yourself wandering through downtown Haugesund with time to spare, make sure to visit Viking Planet . Here, Haugesund’s Viking Age history is brought to life through immersive virtual reality, 3D presentations, and other digital experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Haugesund’s history than just its Viking roots. Karmsund Folkemuseum reveals the stories of the city’s involvement with shipping, fishing, and agriculture, in the 1,000 years since the Viking Age.

Elsewhere in the city, Our Savior’s Church is a striking red-brick, new Gothic church with a notable tower and room for more than 1,000 people inside. The church is usually free to enter on cruise days, although donations are appreciated.

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

Eric Deggans

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

Is Conan O'Brien the best 'Hot Ones' guest ever? Discuss.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.
