Booked a 10am Colosseum tour. Confirmed via email the week before. Showed up @9:45 and was told I'd been rebooked onto an 11:45. No email, No phone call, nothing. It's June, so all other tours were sold out and we didn't want to miss the Colosseum, so we came back @11:30. At that point it was an absolute madhouse, at least 30-40 people with the same issue. Many of whom had been rescheduled onto EARLIER tours without communication and were being told they were marked as no shows so they wouldn't be getting a refund. At 12pm our guide still hadn't shown and the company rep said "What can we do? He's supposed to be here." Finally our guide showed up, but he explained that he was basically squeezing us in between his tours to cover for someone who was missing.... Which is probably why he speed walked through the first half of the tour (The Forum & Palentine Hill). I'm asthmatic, we had a toddler (now very cranky and in need of a nap because we're 2 & 1/2 hours later than I booked), and we had some older people on the tour. More than half the group struggled to keep up with the guide. When we finally got into the museum, they said there was an issue with our tickets and we were NOT on the arena access tour, just the regular tour, which means instead of walking in at ground level we had to climb up two steep flights of stairs. The guide said we would get a partial refund for the error, but I haven't received anything.

My Wife and I did the Colosseum and ancient small group tour through Tripmasters and this tour group set the tone for a fantastic vacation and experience. Our tour guide Jorge was amazing with his kindness, attention to detail and taking time to connect and understand each client in the group. We were quick to get in and avoid the long times and the tour guide kept heat in mind. The guide even took the time to help elderly done stairs. Now that our vacation is over this tour company was one of the highlights and will look to use the again in next visit. Also will recommend to family and friends.

Vivicos International Travel Colosseum Rome tour

The 3 hour tour started at 11.30am so no problems getting across Rome early in the morning. Our guide was Denis, an archaeology graduate who had all of the information we could have wanted at his fingertips. He was happy to linger and answer questions from the small group - we never felt rushed. Even as we waited in the short queue (in February) he would point out details in the architecture and tell us facts and figures about the history of the Colosseum. Regularly making sure the pace of the tour was appropriate (we are in our late 50s and early 60s and managed fine) Denis spoke excellent English and we were able to hear him even in a crowd as we were given headsets with disposable earphones and he spoke into a small microphone. He used a very interesting guide book with overlays on the illustrations which showed how the buildings would have looked in the past. The tour ended in the Forum and we were able to wander into the city afterwards without having to return to the tour office. I thoroughly recommend this company and especially Denis who is a friendly and knowledgeable young man.

We were in a small group of people led by a very knowledgeable guide. The young people probably found his detail about the technical side of building the Colosseum and the materials used not quite as interesting. It is quite unbelievable to be standing in the place of people who lived so long ago and finding out about the gladiators and animals who were brought to fight.

While I don't always recommend tour guides, this one I think is a must. If you don't have a guide, it's hard to understand what your looking at and imagine the history and importance of the Coliseum. Arrive early and book a tour in advance would be my recommendation. Now if you book in advance arrive early so you can find your specific tour group. There are literally hundreds and you will have a hard time finding the location of that specific group.

The guided bus tour is your best option if you want to see Rome in a day. Cost €20 per person and it takes you to the most interesting parts of the city and to the Vatican as well.

Such a great tour - would definitely recommend doing the tour rather than just paying to go into the colosseum. You get way more information and you get to go to parts of the colosseum that the basic ticket doesn't get you. If you get a tour guide called Hilaria, you're in luck, she's great!

We were just two people on the tour done by Joy of Rome and we were so lucky to have Angelica as our guide. She seems to know absolutely everything and even though she told us a lot of facts it was done in such an interesting way that I think we won't easily forget what we learned yesterday. She is a very knowledgeable young woman and a perfect guide. We highly recommend the tour and Angelica as a guide.
