The iconic 135-acre Hollywood Cemetery is nestled in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood and has been active since the 19th century. Over 80,000 people have been memorialized in the gardens, and people are still buried there each year.

Hollywood Cemetery is nestled between the historic Oregon Hill neighborhood and the James River.

The Hollywood Cemetery Board created an official list of 47 “notables” in 1953 within the grounds who have “significantly influenced the course of history due to their actions or opinions.”

Some of those mentioned include:

Frederick William Emrich | An 18-month-old, the first burial at Hollywood back in June 1849.

President James Monroe and President John Tyler | Two of the eight US presidents born in Virginia. Their wives, Elizabeth and Julia, are buried alongside them.

Virginia Randolph Ellett | The first headmistress for what is now the St. Catherine’s School , which has been educating young women since 1890.

Isabel Matthes | An early executive director with the Richmond Girl Scout Council, she died at 27 in 1925. Scouts still bring flowers to her grave, marked with the signature trefoil design.

Florence Rees | A 2-year-old girl who died of scarlet fever in 1862. Her grave is guarded by a large iron dog. The statue was once at her grandfather’s house, so he brought it to her grave to prevent it from being melted for ammunition during the Civil War.

What Can You See On A Hollywood Cemetery Tour?

Nature and trees at hollywood.

Hollywood Cemetery was designed for the living, not the dead. It is literally a nature retreat and contains some of the best examples of native trees in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In fact, there are more than 2,000 trees in the cemetery today, including tulip poplars and white oaks.

Many of the trees predate the cemetery.

If you like old trees like I do, check out the Angel Oak in S.C. and one of the Witness Trees in Gettysburg.

Hollywood Cemetery Famous Graves

Hollywood Cemetery doesn’t just have natural beauty. It is also worth the visit because it is the final resting place of two presidents.

Presidents Circle serves as the final resting place for the 5th President of the United States, James Monroe, and the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler.

A fact that few know is that James Monroe’s Gothic Revival cast iron canopy, (commonly known as “the Birdcage”) was registered as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 1968.

The cast iron canopy around James Monroe's tomb can best be described as a birdcage, surrounded by other tombstones.

This recognition elevated Hollywood Cemetery to one of the most prominent places of burial in the state of Virginia.

Not far away is the Emmanuel Church cemetery where Mosby Ranger Joseph Bryan is buried.

Confederate Soldiers Buried At Hollywood Cemetery

The list of Confederate soldiers buried at Hollywood is seemingly endless.

There are 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried there as well as 2,000 unknown soldiers interred there after the Battle of Gettysburg.

Some of the most well known Confederate soldiers include General JEB Stuart, George Pickett, Dr. Hunter McGuire, Fitz Hugh Lee, John Pegram, and President Jefferson Davis.

Related Post: Richmond is full of history, including being the final resting place of Mosby Ranger Joseph Bryan .

Other Notable Historical Figures

Many notable figures are buried in the cemetery, including six Virginia governors, two Supreme Court justices, prominent authors and suffragists.

In 1953, the Hollywood Cemetery board designated an official list of 49 notables within the cemetery who have significantly influenced the course of history due to their actions or opinions.

You can see a full list of notable figures buried in the cemetery here .

The Stone Pyramid at Hollywood Cemetery

Hollywood Cemetery Tours always stop at this pyramid made of granite that honor the Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. It contrasts against a blue sky with one small white cloud in the background.

One of the most remarkable monuments in the cemetery is a 90-foot high pyramid  that was built in 1869 as a memorial to the more than 18,000 enlisted men of the Confederate Army buried in the cemetery.

Made from granite quarried from the James River, the monument took an entire year to build. What’s even more amazing about this memorial is that it is dry-laid with no mortar. The stones are immense!

The pyramid is located on a hill in the cemetery, close to where 2,000 unknowns from the Battle of Gettysburg are buried.

The Legend of The Iron Dog In Hollywood Cemetery

Perhaps the most famous — or at least most visited grave marker — is the “Iron Dog.” This statue of a Newfoundland stands guard over the grave of a little girl who died in 1862.

iron dog at hollywood

There are many stories about how the Iron Dog came to be in Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery. The most popular version is that it was moved to keep it from being melted down into bullets during the Civil War. There are also many ghost stories surrounding this memorial.

guard dog at hollywood

I couldn’t find the story behind the death of the little girl, except an account that said it was “tragic.” Every tombstone in the cemetery tells part of a story, but the details will perhaps never be known.

(Some day I will write a post on ghost stories surrounding Hollywood. There are a few of them, one of which involves a vampire!)

Loyal Dogs Honored At Hollywood Cemetery Richmond

I happened to find another dog statue while there on my last visit. One can only imagine the story behind this one. It is beautiful!

It’s hard to capture the beauty and the serenity of Hollywood in words. I shot a little bit of video from my phone (see below), but it’s hard to do while driving since the roads are very curvy and hilly!

Click HERE to see the short clip.

Pro Tip: If you visit Hollywood Cemetery , plan on spending some time there.

Hollywood Cemetery History

Opened in 1849, Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va., was constructed on land known as “Harvie’s Woods” that was once owned by William Byrd II.

It was designed in the rural garden style, with its name coming from the holly trees dotting the hills of the property.

Located beside the James River, Hollywood Cemetery is spread out across hills and dales, with roads that wind beneath stately trees.

Many of the monuments are works of art, and the natural and architectural beauty of this cemetery sets it apart from the grid-like layout of most others.

Landscape architect John Notman designed Hollywood in 1847 as a “rural” style garden cemetery, and specifically left trees and other plants untouched in order to create a peaceful haven.

Today, there are heritage roses, magnificent trees, and other blooms that live up to the name of a garden cemetery. The sound of chirping birds and the relaxing sound of the James River flowing over rapids close by add to the peacefulness of the place.

Like Old Cemeteries? Check out the Pon Pon Chapel of Ease in S.C. and the Old Burying Ground in N.C.

Note: Just a few days after my most recent visit to the cemetery, it was heavily vandalized with many irreplaceable monuments destroyed. It is heartbreaking, but not surprising, since the historical monuments throughout Richmond have been permitted to be desecrated, removed, and destroyed in actions that are condoned — and even encouraged — by officials and politicians. No arrests have been made at this time.

Wrap-Up Of Hollywood Cemetery Tours

As is noted on the Cemetery website, Hollywood is more than a cemetery, it is a fascinating outdoor museum that tells its story through stone, iron and the beautiful landscape.

I know many people don’t have cemeteries on their travel bucket list, but Hollywood should be an exception.

Its history and natural beauty make it an important historical, cultural and natural landmark.

Famous Final Resting Places: Hollywood Forever

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Although taking road trips up the Californian coast and exploring amazing cultural sights might be among the most popular things to do in Los Angeles, a surprising number of visitors enjoy touring the city’s iconic cemeteries. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is a Los Angeles landmark with a history dating back to 1899. The area played a starring role in early Hollywood's growth with Paramount Studios occupying the back half of the space that was originally called the Hollywood Cemetery.

It has since become the cemetery of choice for hundreds of Hollywood's brightest stars, studio heads, writers, and performers. People come from all corners of the world to visit graves in the cemetery, both on self-guided tours and official guided walking tours.

Self-guided tour of the most popular graves

It may seem awkward or a little macabre to view a cemetery as a tourist attraction but, given the star power of those who count the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as their final resting place, it is almost inevitable. The headstones include names you'd otherwise see in lights or in your favorite magazines, with remains housed in a variety of settings ranging from immense mausoleums to lakeside tombs. The cemetery also includes the graves of big-name producers, directors, actors, musicians, and other notable Los Angeles figures.

Griffith J. Griffith

This name may not immediately strike a chord for those outside of Los Angeles, but locals know it well. The grave of the man who donated the land that is now home to Griffith Park is marked with an obelisk. You can find his grave in Section 7 (Griffith Lawn).

The Ramones

Two members of the punk band The Ramones were laid to rest in this cemetery. Dee Dee Ramone, one of the band’s founders, is buried near the aquarium in the Garden of Legends (Section 8) , while fellow founding member Johnny Ramone is buried down the road.

Bugsy Siegel

The marker for this notorious gangster is located in the Beth Olam Jewish Cemetery at Hollywood Forever . Siegel died in his girlfriend’s home at age 41 from a fatal gunshot wound.

Jayne Mansfield

While bombshell Jayne Mansfield was often compared to Marilyn Monroe, she curated an image and legendary status of her own. She died in a car accident at age 34. Her actual grave is in Pennsylvania, but fans still make a pilgrimage to her cenotaph, located in the Hollywood Forever Garden of Legends.

Kids everywhere will know the voice of Mel Blanc, who lent his chops to beloved cartoon characters such as the Tasmanian Devil and Bugs Bunny. His tomb is even inscribed with one of his famous character’s signature lines, "That's All Folks."

Rudolph Valentino

Although Valentino died decades ago, at the age of 31, his grave remains one of the most frequently visited in the cemetery. Legend has it that a woman in black roams the grounds mourning the death of this handsome actor. His grave is located in the crypt of the Cathedral Mausoleum.

Hobart J. Whitley

Another name that many folks may not immediately recognize, Whitley played a key role in naming this area while he was on his honeymoon. For that reason, he's often called the Father of Hollywood. His plot is located on the South Wall of the Colonnade.

Cecil B. DeMille

Renowned for his lavish wedding presents and prolific career as a director, DeMille's tomb in the Garden of Legends at Hollywood Forever Cemetery remains a popular spot for visiting tourists. He directed more than 50 movies, both silent and talkies, including iconic flicks like "Cleopatra" and "The Ten Commandments."

Guided Tours of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery

If you prefer taking guided tours, the two-and-a-half hour Hollywood Forever Cemetery Walking Tour is a great way to see the resting places of all the stars buried here. The tour company also offers alternate tours, such as the Jewish Heritage tour, which focuses on the lives of Hollywood Forever's Jewish residents, including stops at the Beth Olam Mausoleum, Bugsy Siegel's grave, Charles Feldman's grave, and the Anne Frank Memorial. Another alternate tour, Hidden Hollywood, takes you to the graves of more obscure stars, such as director William Beaudine, silent stars Renee Adoree and Karl Dane, and the Talmadge Sisters.

Catch a Flick at the Cemetery

In what can only be described as a surreal experience, you can now snack on popcorn while watching movies at the cemetery. During the summer months, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery opens its gates, dims its lights, and yells "Action!" with its Cinespia outdoor movie series. During movie screenings, Fairbanks Lawn transforms into an outdoor theater as patrons line up with their low chairs, blankets, and pillows. There’s even a pre-show DJ to warm up the crowd before every screening.

Other Nearby Attractions

After touring the cemetery, you can continue exploring the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with TMZ celebrity tours . This two-hour celebrity tour takes you through all the hotspots the City of Angels has to offer, including the Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills. Not only could you bump into some of your favorite stars, including the likes of Kim Kardashian, Lizzo and Jamie Foxx, but you’ll get to relive some of the world’s most memorable celebrity moments from the comfort of your luxury tour bus.

For a taste of Hollywood tradition, travel a few blocks over to Paramount Pictures and discover more than a century of Hollywood history on one of its studio tours. Get a behind-the-scenes view of Hollywood's longest-running movie studio and leave with a much better understanding of what goes into the making of your favorite movies.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Only in Hollywood can a cemetery be a sacred resting space but also be a tourist attraction and a venue for cultural events.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which used to be known as Hollywood Memorial Park, is a functioning cemetery that is the final resting place of more of Hollywood’s founders than any other place in the world. It is also one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. If you live in the Los Angeles area or plan a trip to Hollywood, a visit to Hollywood Forever Cemetery is unique to your itinerary.

The cemetery was founded in 1899 on 100 acres. Later, the cemetery sold off some land to Hollywood Paramount Studios, built in the back half of the original cemetery property.

A portion of the cemetery is set aside as the Beth Olam Cemetery, a dedicated Jewish burial ground, is the final resting place for Hollywood’s Jewish community.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

This cemetery was famous with many of the founders of Hollywood’s largest studios and directors, performers, and writers. Hundreds of favorite early Hollywood stars are buried here, including Jayne Mansfield, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, etc.

Cecil B. DeMille, the director of the Ten Commandments, is buried here, and his large tomb depicts two matching Egyptian-style sarcophagi. Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel is buried in the mausoleum on the cemetery grounds near Paramount Studios.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Johnny Ramone, the guitar player for the Ramones, is buried here, with his grave marker featuring a statue of him, from the waist up, rocking out on a guitar; a fitting memorial for punk rock powerhouse.

There was a period when the cemetery fell into despair. However, it was purchased in the late 1990s by a family from Missouri. They renamed the cemetery and worked to restore and refurbish the place. Through their investments, the graveyard was revitalized, and people, once again, came to visit the final resting place of the stars.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

People choose to visit the cemetery for a variety of reasons. Family members come to see the resting place of their loved ones, and fans and Hollywood buffs come to see the graves of the town’s stars and starlets. Others come just out of curiosity or to find a quiet space in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.

The cemetery includes large grassy areas, meandering roads, a pond feature, and several mausoleums. Some of the tombstones are dramatic, featuring ornate detail, pictures, etc.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Events

The cemetery hosts events, including summertime movie showings where movies are projected on the side of the white marble mausoleum. People bring blankets, lawn chairs, food, and drink and take in the show. Each movie draws an average of 3,000 people.

There are also Dia de Los Muertos festivities in late October/early November, where families artfully decorate the graves and tombs of their deceased relatives. The Masonic Hall is also at the cemetery, and hosts live musical events, often selling out.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Cemetery Ghost Stories

There are many stories of ghostly encounters for those of you who like ghost stories. One account is that the ghost of William Randolph Hearst is said to visit the grave of Marion Davies, his mistress.

Some are visiting the grave of Virginia Rappe, a silent film actress, and report hearing sounds of a woman sobbing, though no one is around that is crying. These are just a few stories of the paranormal activity occurring at the cemetery.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Johnny Ramone

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Parking

Parking is free in the cemetery (events are not), and there is a small shop to purchase flowers and gifts. Free street parking can be found nearby.

If you plan to visit Hollywood Forever, please remember that this is a cemetery, and you should politely carry yourself during your visit. Don’t horseplay, use loud voices, run or engage in activities that could damage gravesites or markers or disrupt other visitors.

Motion picture historian Karie Bible leads a walking tour through the cemetery, or you can wander around the graveyard for free. Bring sunscreen, a hat, a light jacket for weather changes, and some water. More information on the tours can be found here .

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Where is Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Plan on spending about one hour at Hollywood Forever cemetery, leaving plenty of time for checking out the rest of Hollywood’s attractions.

Planning your Visit: Hollywood Forever is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, just west of N. Van Ness Avenue in Hollywood. From Highway 101, take the Santa Monica Blvd (SR-2) exit and proceed west. Cemetery hours of operation are 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, seven days a week.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Living History Tour 2023

  • Hollywood Forever, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood

Peafowl roam in the Buddhist garden at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, among the statues, and small temple-like objects.

Every October for the past 40 years, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles "digs up the dirt" on Hollywood's history through a walking tour of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which opened in 1899. Featured on the tour are Art Deco monuments and the final resting places of people whose names will forever be associated with Hollywood and the City of Angels, including Col. Griffith J. Griffith, Hollywood founder Harvey Wilcox; actors Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino and Marion Davies; filmmakers Cecil B. DeMille and William Desmond Taylor. Choose a time between 9 and 11 a.m. to begin. And wear comfortable shoes for the 2.5- to 3-hour tour.
