All these are experiences that one can have in just one small gem of Kerala called Wayanad! Here’s A 2-day budget adventure trip in Wayanad. We travelled in Monsoon and it was quite picturesque and an off-season time to travel. We enjoyed waterfalls, boat rides and camping in just 2 days.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

  • Arrive early morning at Kalpetta and head to Chembra Peak
  • Go to Soochipara Falls
  • See Kanthanpara falls if time permits
  • Go towards the base camp
  • Refreshments and night trek to camping site
  • Wake up and a small trek
  • Descend and head to Edekkal Caves
  • Travel to Banasura Sagar Dam for a speed boat ride
  • Retire for the day and depart for your destination

HOW TO REACH WAYANAD

  • Self drive a car to Wayanad
  • Rented vehicle from nearby cities
  • Nearest airport is Kozhikode

WHAT & WHEN TO DO IN WAYANAD

If you are leaving from Bangalore like we did you can follow this itinerary

  • Catch a bus from Shantinagar to Kalpetta. KSRTC busses available for 10 PM.
  • Arrive at Kalpetta Early morning
  • Have Breakfast at the restaurant of your choice. We had at Affas as it opened earlier.
  • Head to Chembra Peak from bus stand via local bus. Catch a bus to Meppadi .
  • In our case, Chembra peak entry was prohibited so we headed to Soochipara Falls via an auto. Costed us around Rs. 200 for the auto. Negotiations possible. Buses/Sharing autos can also be taken to reach.
  • A fellow traveler and friend had suggested us to go to Chulamalla , near chembra peak where we can enjoy a small waterfall and take a dip in the pond below if we ask the jeep drivers to take us there. However we were not able to go as we skipped Chembra.
  • Soochipara Falls had an entry cost of Rs 50-60 per person. However worth the experience as the falls were in their full glory due to the monsoons.
  • On our way out, we used a sharing auto back to reach back Meppadi.
  • From Meppadi we caught a bus to Kanthanpara falls . You can catch the local bus from Meppadi to Vaduvanchal and get down in between at Thinapuram or ask locals about which point to get down for the falls.
  • From the bus drop point, you will have to walk/take an auto for 3 kms to reach the falls.
  • The similar entry fee of Rs 50 had to be paid once again. Usually you can take a dip and enjoy swimming under the falls, however in monsoons the force is too strong and the entry to water was prohibited.
  • We once again came back to the bus drop point walking near Thinapuram and had to catch a bus to Ambalavayal .
  • For which we took the bus to Vaduvanchal and changed and sat in the bus to Amabalavayal .
  • We had a late lunch over there, before meeting our trek and camp guide from Space Travel (the group who organised camping and trekking for us)
  • At 5PM, we met them and they arranged for the jeep to head over to our base camp . The base camp had a nice villa with amazing views of the towns below. We freshened ourselves and they served us coffee.
  • At 8 PM they served us dinner and at 9 PM we started a 30 minute trek to our camping site on the hill.
  • All the equipment including flash lights were provided by them.
  • We were guided by Ajmal (The representative and guide from the space travel group) to the hill named Ponmudikotta. It was a public place which can be accessed by anyone, however since it was a night trek, we needed the help of a guide to travel safely and set up our tents.
  • We retired in our camps for the day, it was too damp to have a campfire.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

  • The sunrise from the hill is a well known site so we woke up to some amazing views.
  • In the morning we did a short trek nearby to a cave and to get some good sites.
  • We trekked back to the base in the morning and had our refreshments and breakfast .
  • Post which the jeep dropped us back to Ambalavayal .
  • The edekkal caves can be visited from there as they are very near to the camp site.
  • We skipped them and headed straight to Banasura Sagar dam for the day.
  • Take a bus from “Kalpetta new bus stand” a bus to Padinjarathara .
  • After reaching, we walked to the dam from the bus drop point as the weather was pleasant.
  • The dam offers some spectacular views, however the main reason for our visit was the speed boat ride.
  • The tickets for the boating are open till 3PM only so reach before that.
  • The boating is stopped during rains, but continues when the rain stops.
  • We had to wait almost an hour for the rain to subside so we can enjoy the boat ride.
  • The speed boat ride costs Rs. 900 per ride. Max persons allowed in a ride is 5. It is worth the money
  • We got stuck in the rain after the boat ride so we waited for it to subside. We caught a bus back to Kalpetta for our evening bus back to Bangalore.

All the locations visited above are pinned on this map in the order of our visit : Locations on Google Maps

We had initially planned a three day trip and wanted to explore few more spots. However with the continuous rain and our camping experience, we were quite satisfied so we headed back that same night.

Wayanad – A Great Road Trip From Bangalore

Wayanad has been in the news of late for political reasons, but we love this beautiful region of Kerala for its rich natural assets and cultural heritage. Its location makes for a great road trip from Bangalore. Wayanad strategically located on the border of Karnataka and Kerala is a great weekend getaway from Bangalore. So much so the roads leading to Wayanad get jammed with weekend revelers. Considering this we always head to Wayanad during weekdays when we can enjoy the beauty of the place in relative seclusion.

The Best of Both Worlds

Road Trip From Bangalore To Wayanad

Considering that Wayanad is located right on the inter-state border of Karnataka and Kerala, one literally gets to enjoy the best of both the states. As you zip along the smooth Bangalore-Mysore highway, you are treated to many of the attractions of Karnataka. A soon as you enter the Kerala border the landscape changes and you enter the verdant green terrain of the state. However, the geographical layout of Wayanad is somewhat different from other parts of the states. Here emerald tea gardens, hills, and lakes dot the land giving it an enchanting aura different from the romantic aura that one usually associates with Kerala.

A Bike Ride To Wayanad

Road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad

We love road trips. We generally prefer cars, but also love to experience the exhilarating feeling of freedom that a bike ride offers. The feel of the wind brushing your face is something that only a bike ride can provide. So on a recent trip, we decided to ditch the car and take the bike instead. However there was one impediment, we realized that our two-wheeler insurance had just expired. We remembered having done our travel insurance online and immediately renewed our two wheeler insurance online. Thanks to the power of digitalization and the harnessing of internet technology by insurance service providers we were off early morning, our hearts thumping with excitement, and the bike too seemed happy to be off on the road again!

Pit Stops On The Road

The best thing about the road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad is that the road is very good. And again the entire route from Bangalore to Wayanad is full of places where one can stop.

The Bangalore-Mysore road is dotted with umpteen motels and restaurants where you can stop for a hot breakfast including steaming cups of filter coffee. We too fortified ourselves and were off with renewed zeal and energy. We recommend a stop at Maddur which is about 81 km from Bangalore. You have some nice restaurants on the road here and when you are there you must enjoy the famed Maddur Wada, a crisp and unique preparation eaten with chutney.

Just around 48 kilometers from Bangalore is located the town of Ramnagar. You notice huge rocks in the distance as you drive into this town. Ramnagar acquired celluloid immortality as Ramgadh in the Bollywood classic Sholay. It was here that the chilling voice of Gabbar Singh once resonated. The complete village of Ramgadh had been created here against the backdrop of seven hills that surround the village. Those looking to relive their Sholay moments can stop over here.

Channapatna

Just before you reach Maddur, at a distance of about 61 km from Bangalore, is the small town of Channapatna. This town is famous for wooden toys which are named after the town itself. It is really worthwhile to stop briefly here and look at the toys in some of the shops that line the road. If you can spare some time you may visit one of the factories too. We have nostalgic memories associated with the toys, the wooden dolls from Channapatna were a part of our childhood. In the era of technology when kids take to smartphones and gadgets almost from the crib, the wooden toy industry is not doing all that well and the art of wooden toy making unique to this place may be on the verge of extinction. Do buy a couple of wooden toys or showpieces when you are there as this will in a small way help in sustaining the craft.

Srirangapatna

After you drive 124 km from Bangalore, you reach the historical town of Srirangapatna. This place is an important landmark in the history and culture of the region. Srirangapatna is a complete destination in itself and requires at least half a day to see all its attractions.

  • Ranganathaswamy temple is the main attraction of Srirangapatna the famous temple dates back to the 9th century. It is one of the important Vaishnavite shrines of South India. The three famous temples dedicated to Ranganathaswamy and are important pilgrimage centers in Southern India are Adi Ranga, the deity at Srirangapatna, Madhya Ranga at Sivasamudram and Antya Ranga at Srirangam.
  • Daria Daulat Bagh is a palace made of teak wood associated with Tipu Sultan, it served as his summer palace. The most striking feature of the palace is the colorful frescoes that adorn the walls, pillars, archways, almost every available space. The enchanting frescoes are painted in a classical style referred to as Mysore Painting.
  • Tipu Sultan’s Death Place is another historic landmark not far from the summer palace. An inscription at the place informs that the body of Tipu Sultan was found at the spot. It is said that met his death there in a battle.
  • Ranganathitthu Bird Sanctuary is the biggest bird sanctuary in Karnataka. The sanctuary is home to around 170 species of birds depending on the time of the year. Boating is an attraction in the serene environs of the sanctuary.

Passing Through Wildlife Habitat On The Road Trip from Bangalore To Wayanad

Elephant In Bandipur Tiger

One of the most exciting parts of the route to Wayanad on the road trip from Bangalore is when you pass through the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. This is part of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve on the Karnataka side and the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on the Kerala side. As you drive through a road surrounded by lush forests on either side, you pass by flocks of graceful deer eyeing you shyly. If you are lucky you may even see an elephant or two by the side of the road. Indeed this is one of the thrilling elements of the road trip.

Road Trip From Bangalore To Wayanad – Sunflower Bonus

Sunflower Farm

If you are traveling to Wayanad during the blooming season of sunflowers which is around the months of June-July, you are in for a treat. You will be treated to the visual spectacle of rows and rows of sunflowers swaying in the breeze. Many sunflower farms dot the road as you leave the boundaries of Karnataka state.

Wayanad

Wayanad is a unique blend of culture, heritage, and history, with generous toppings of natural beauty. A land so beautiful it is sure to inspire the imagination of many. Undulating tea plantations, hills, valleys, and lakes, make the place a veritable paradise of nature. Chembra Peak makes for an exciting trek and the Edakkal Caves and interesting insight into the stone age. The Heritage Museum in Wayanad provides a window into the cultural heritage of the place. Places like Pookut Lake and various waterfalls offer soothing sanctuaries for the mind. All this ensures that Wayanad is a perfect weekend getaway with a tapestry of experiences

Yes, Wayanad is a beautiful destination, but the road trip from Bangalore is no less lovely and exciting, an experience to be relived again and again.

This looks like a great road trip and what a brilliant idea to do it on a bike! I miss my college days when we used to do such road trips on bikes. Wayanad sounds like a beautiful town and I did not know that you pass through Ramnagar when you drive from Bangalore to Wayanad, the place where famous Sholay was shot! The pit stops you’ve talked about sound like the perfect places to take a break.

This is really informative post dear that wayanand museum looks so beautiful I will keep all points in my mind if I visit here

Also loved to see those huge rocks at Ramgadh or Ramnagar and would truly resonate that Gabbar of Sholay. Wow, it would be great to see deer and elephants crossing us. Thanks for sharing another beautiful offbeat destination.

ROAD TRIP TO WAYANAD: TRAVEL ITINERARY

I travelled: with my family with kids, type of travel: child-friendly, luxury, adventure, for:  3 nights, dates: january 2023, price point:  $$, one of the best things about living in bangalore is the possibility of so many road trips to the most amazing places. thanks to the instagram algorithm, we came across the newly opened taj in stunning wayanad. we took advantage of having family in town and pack ed up our trusted innova for a three-day trip to kerala. while we love our lux accommodations, we also love our roadside restaurants and adventures in nature, and this trip was a perfect mix of the three.

GETTING THERE

Even though wayanad is only some 300kms away from bangalore, those 300kms easily turn into eight hours on the road. we decided to drive because we had time and we wanted to have our car once in wayanad to be able to go around easily with a toddler and a car seat. we left bangalore around 7.30 in the morning on friday, timing our trip to make sure we make it to mysore in time for the opening of sapa bakery . since its opening, sapa has been reason enough to make the trek to mysore for its baked goods, sandwiches and the most amazing cakes, and travelling with a 2-year-old meant we had to stop anyhow so why not make the best of it sapa is closed on mondays and opens at noon on other days, so make sure to plan accordingly they have the most beautiful terrace but it gets very full very fast. you have to try their pasta and the best pulled-pork sandwich in india..

After lunch, we continued on our way to Kerala. The road takes you through a tiger reserve and quaint little villages, making for a nice coconut water stop before reaching your final destination.

On our way back, we had lunch at poojari fish land . as the name says, go for anything fish on the menu and you won’t regret it. we had ghee roast everything. they also have high chairs, making it one of the few highway places that are really kid and baby friendly., where to stay , there are a lot of guest houses and boutique hotels in wayanad, but we decided to stay at the newly opened taj wayanad resort and spa . the property is truly stunning- the pics don’t do it justice we booked the premium cottages because it’s always nice to have a little space to hang out after the baby goes to bed and i can safely say this was one of the most comfortable beds i have ever slept in and the shower was an experience in itself if you are traveling with a toddler, bring your own pack n play because the “crib” they had on-site when we went was a moses basket for a new-born so we ended up sleeping with tiny toddler feet stuck in our ribs for three nights. the hotel also doesn’t yet have high chairs, and probably more importantly doesn’t yet have a liquor license so byob., there are three restaurants on the premise, a massive infinity pool overlooking the waterfront and a beautiful yoga pavilion. there is also a standardly great taj spa and a well-equipped gym if that’s your jam. by the pool is a little games room and a kids centre with basic toys and book. my kid was more than happy exploring the waterfront and playing in the pool, so we didn’t really use the kids centre. the property is large and you can get around by using the golf carts..

WHAT TO DO

Our lives still revolve around nap times, so we planned our stay accordingly, with activities in the morning and pool time and chilling in the afternoons., a really nice, kid-friendly trip is to the kallar meenmutti waterfalls . there is ample parking and locals will try and get you to park on their plot so they can sell you chai and local chocolates and pickles. don’t fight it, park and buy because it’s really delicious. after buying a ticket from the forest department, you have a 200-meter walk to the beginning of the waterfalls. once you hit the bottom you have a 30-minute trek across the rocky terrain which you navigate by holding onto a rope. it’s just challenging enough to still be fun and you will be rewarded by some really nice views. you can dip your feet into the waterfall as well. on your way back, make a slight detour and have a banana leaf meal at the 1980s nostalgic restaurant . the food is delicious and the restaurant is really cute and homely. there is no menu, the waiter will tell you what they have available. since you are in kerala, parottas are a must.

Wayanad is home to the 2 nd largest dam in Asia and the largest dam in India, the Banasurasagar Dam. The dam offers boat rides, (a very short) zipline and some great views. It also has some very random offerings like fish pedicures and house of horrors, but all in all it is worth visiting for the vibes and views if for nothing else. Try and go as early as possible as it is a very popular attraction, especially on the weekends.

After the damn, we stopped at the Lunch Box Homely Restaurant , which really is super homely and run by a mother-son duo. I will say this might not be for those whose tummies are not 100% used to India! The food was delicious, spicy, served on a banana leaf and super affordable, and what more can you ask for! We made a pit stop at the Banasura Ayurvedic and Spice Garden , which while being quite a tourist trap was also really interesting to our toddler who got to try all the plants, spices and chocolates. We bought some famous Kerala pepper and cinnamon.

We also wanted to see the famous edakkal caves, but that seemed a bit intense with a toddler, so we left that and some more demanding treks for next time. wherever you decide to stay, local staff will be more than happy to assist you with planning your trip based on your activity levels, good to know, wayanad in january was hot during the day and fresh and foggy in the mornings, so pack accordingly since there is a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do, i packed mostly leggings, sports tops and layers, good walking shoes, and a pair of my trusted birks for around the resort. there are plenty of small shops in wayanad if you run out of baby supplies like wet wipes and diapers., main photo by taj wayanad , all other photos courtesy of the author.

Bangalore To Wayanad: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

It’s all about packing everything you need into your car boot or a knapsack and zooming off to your destination. That’s what road trips are all about. Road trips promise to be a lot of fun and are the best way to take a short break. This extensive collection is intended for people looking for tips on their journey from Bangalore to Wayanad Route. The expected itinerary takes a lot of pressure off the mind. You know what to do and what to expect most of the time on the road. So, let’s help you get on the way from Bangalore to Wayanad .

Bangalore to Wayanad Distance

Bangalore to Wayanad

Wayanad is about 350 km from Bangalore, and the distance varies depending on the path you take. It takes about 6-7 hours to cover the distance, as most of the path passes through hilly terrain, where you can’t do high speed.

The journey from Bangalore to Wayanad is easy, for most of the trip, as these are toll roads, very well maintained by the Dept Highways. These are four-lane highways, with medians dividing oncoming traffic, well-planned configurations and service roads. White lines, cat eyes and blinking LED road studs are additional protection measures on these highways. You pass the toll booths at an average distance of 40-60 km from each other.

The Ghats roads are narrower and a little more challenging. As one thing, you ‘re constantly climbing, and there are sharp hairpin bends that take skill and precision to navigate while avoiding traffic down. Also, hilly terrain is unpredictable, with fog rising without warning, hindering visibility. Keep this in mind when making a road trip plan for your Bangalore to Wayanad. Start early, to avoid driving along the Ghat stretch after sunset.

Best routes from Bangalore to Wayanad

You ‘re in your own vehicle when you’re on a road trip, so you’re free to choose the route you want to take. There are three distinctive routes that you can choose from. All three routes are good; we suggest that you take one route on your way up, and another on your way back. This way, you ‘re going to see a lot more and make the ride a memorable one.

The Mysore route

The Mysore route

You ‘re going to cross a few interesting sights on this route, along NH 275. The path you must take is Bangalore – Channapatna – Srirangapatna – Mysore – Kattikulam – Wayanad. It’s 324 km long and takes about 7 hours, with a few pit stops.

But, if you want to stop at tourist sites, it will take a little longer. The places of interest that we would recommend are –

  • Heritage Winery: The winery in Channapatna offers tours of the vineyards and the distillery, showing how the Sula wine is made. It’s an enchanting place and it’s an informative tour. You ‘re going to get to taste the wine.
  • Barachukki Falls: Worth a detour, during the monsoon, when the fall is at its glory
  • Mysore: There is plenty to see and do in Mysore, we recommend to visit the Amba Vilas Palace, the Brindavan Gardens and the Mysore Zoo at least for a full day

The Coorg Route

Wayanad via Coorg

Reaching Wayanad via Coorg is through a slightly longer route; however, every bit of your time and effort is worth it. It’s a long, scenic drive, over 250 km to Coorg, via NH 75 Hit the Bangalore – Mysore Road – Bidadi – Ramanagara – Channapatna – Hunsur – Periyapatna – Karadigodu (Coorg) – SH 89 – Wayanad. Coorg is close to 110 km away from Wayanad.

Visit the seasonal waterfalls-Abbey Falls and Mallalli Falls if you have the time. Check out the perspectives for a bird’s eye view of the Western Ghats, take a historic tour of the Madikeri Fort.

The Somnathpur-Bandipur Route

The Somnathpur-Bandipur Route

The route cuts through the area of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve Forest and is a drive of almost 400 km. You ‘re going to take NH 275, and NH 766. Bangalore – Channapatna – Malavalli – Gundlupet – Bandipur – Wayanad – Somanathapura.

The highlight of this route is the National Park and the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. On your drive, you will probably meet animals, deer, elephants, foxes, mongooses, peacocks etc. Stop off for a wildlife safari at the Forest Reserve office. This is a tiger territory and there are high chances to see a tiger in the wild.

The other places of interest on this route are the ancient Temple of Chennakesava founded by the Hoysalas and the highest Gopalaswamy Betta and the Peak of Chembra, both for the views.

Best time to Travel

The months between October and May are the best for planning a road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad. By then the rains have subsided, and the mercury has fluctuated between 10 o – 25 to Celsius, which is very satisfying. The woods turn lush green, and the warm environment is bringing out wildlife.

The months from June to September are also good if you don’t mind the rain because there’s plenty of it. It’s an ideal time to visit though – the landscape comes alive. The rains are drinking up the earth, and the surroundings are becoming green. An endless surge of frothy water bursts from the waterfalls, and the rivers and streams dance a little more. Nature throws up a beautiful series.

 Safety measures

Here are a few things that you must keep in mind, while you are on a road trip –

  • Make sure your car is in good order, gets it serviced, tanks up and checks the wheels’ air pressure, including the spare wheel
  • Don’t drink, drive and stick to the speed limit
  • When driving uphill (1 or 2), shift to a lower gear and do not do high speed
  • Don’t park your car on the highway-go to the laybys
  • Carry water, snacks and foodstuffs
  • Make sure to rest before you fly
  • Start your journey early so traffic avoidance
  • Make sure you traverse the Ghats until it is dark
  • Warn yourself when driving through the Ghats and Forest Reserve; wildlife can come out of nowhere
  • Do not be distracted while the Ghats negotiate, stay focused

Itinerary for a weekend trip from Bangalore to Wayanad

Photo of Vidushi

The distance from Bangalore to Wayanad is 270 Kms approximately. The best time to travel from Bangalore to Wayanad is in the month of July/August when the monsoon subsides, giving it a lush green panorama. I still remember the first time I travelled from Bangalore to Wayanad, I fell in love with the beautiful tea plantation and trek to Chembra peak also called as the heart-shaped lake. There are many trekking opportunities and places to visit in Wayanad if you are game for a little adventure.

Let me now jump straight to how my itinerary from Bangalore to Wayanad looks like:

Day 1: Start early from Bangalore to Wayanad, say at around 5 AM to avoid peak hour traffic. Bangalore to Wayanad distance is 277 km via Mysore road. You could stop at Lokaruchi Kamat for a grand breakfast in a cozy set-up.

Must read: Family resorts in Sakleshpur , candle light dinner in bangalore , sula vineyards bangalore

Once you reach Wayanad, take your time to settle in the resort of your choice (I had the opportunity to stay at http://www.vythiriresort.com/, which is a bit expensive but promises a glimpse of heaven). I always prefer to enjoy day-1 in the resort itself to do justice to the money I pay for accommodation, unless you are an avid user of bed & breakfast type places. The second time, however, I planned my stay at http://edakkal.com/, to ensure that I could make use of my Day 1 by walking up to the Edakkal caves close-by (for more details about them, visit http://www.keralatourism.org/wayanad/edakkal-caves-ambukuthi-hills.php).

Chembra Peak

Day 2: Get out of bed early to trek to Chembra peak which usually takes 2-3 hrs time (especially if you halt frequently to admire the lush green beauty around). Ensure you are back from the peak by 11 am to avoid the heat. Pick a nice restaurant for lunch and enjoy your hearty meal (I usually google best places to eat in 'XYZ' and take a decision based on my gut feeling).

Soochipara Waterfalls

Post lunch, you could head towards Soochippara Falls or Karapuzha dam depending on how much time you have by your side.

And now it is time to head home, as it was only a quick trip. You might want to come back again on another weekend to explore further.

Bangalore to Wayanad Road Trip Experience | A 2022 Memorable Wayanad Blog

Bangalore to Wayanad Travelogue

Bangalore to Wayanad blog- We just returned after a fantastic road trip from Bangalore to Wayanad and our summer holidays in a beautiful resort called Abad Brookside at Wayanad.

Read my travel blog to know more about our driving experience from Bangalore to Wayanad through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve (Karnataka side) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala side).

Update- With the opening of the Bangalore- Mysore expressway, your journey time to Wayand will reduce by a minimum 1 to 2 Hours depending on when you leave Bangalore traffic :)

WHY WANAYAD BLOG?

Wayanad, one of the best-recommended tourist destinations in India ,  is a hill station located in Kerala and is close to the border of Karnataka. Located in the southern tip of the Deccan plateau.

Wayanad is a perfect holiday destination in Kerala. Surrounded by hills, mountains, valleys, dense forests, and plantations, there is no better place in a short driving distance from Bangalore for a relaxing holiday.

With a 5-6 hours drive from Bangalore, one gets to enjoy the best of both states.

While most of the drive through the Bangalore – Mysore road was pretty much through the well-built highways, as soon as we approach the Kerala border, the scene changes completely with the lush green blessing of nature.

ROAD TRIP FROM BANGALORE TO WAYANAD

We love road trips. That’s the best time we get to enjoy with kids since they are locked up in the car and have limited access to other spoiler toys like laptops.

We have been planning a few road trips lately but didn’t work out primarily because of the schooling of our children.

Finally, the perfect time came up. Schools were closed for the summer holidays and my son had just completed his 10th. He scored amazingly good in his 10th exams and we wanted to spend a few days together to celebrate.

After a few discussions and debates, we chose a trip to Bangalore and Wayanad.

I will write a few separate travel stories about our experience in Bangalore and Wayanad but this one is all about our amazing driving experience in the Bangalore – Wayanad route.

CHECKING BANGALORE-WAYANAD ROUTE

Bamboo Rafting at Wayanad

Usually, we don’t plan for road trips. The decisions are usually made at the last minute and we pack up and get started the very next day. It wasn’t very different this time as well. The decision was made just the day before the trip.

I quickly verified the insurance documents, filled fuel, made sure the spare tire has proper air pressure, and renewed the emission certificate. Also did some quick shopping to ensure kids have enough stuff to eat while driving even though stopping by the restaurant is one of the attractions for the kids on the road trips.

Kids were excited when we talked about Bangalore since the Snow city in Bangalore was one of the places they wanted to visit for quite a long time.

Also, we looked for the best resorts in Wayanad and shortlisted Abad Brookside located at Vythiri after considering the ambiance, amenities, etc.

One of the main demands from the kids was, the resort should have a swimming pool and indoor/outdoor sports facilities.  We parents wanted a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Brookside met our requirements perfectly well and we were glad that we picked it for our holidays in Wayanad.

BANGALORE TO WAYANAD ROUTES

There are 3 routes from Bangalore to Wayanad and all three of them go via Mysore and have about the same distance.

  • Route 1 : Bangalore – Mysore – Hunsur- Nagarhole – Kutta – Kartikulam – Mananthavady
  • Route 2 : Bangalore – Mysore – HD Kote – Bavali – Kartikulam – Mananthavady
  • Route 3 : Bangalore – Mysore – Gundlupet – Muthanga (Bandipur forest) – Sulthan Bathery

Since our goal was to enjoy the drive, we chose the most scenic route – Route #3 via Bandipur forest.

Our original plan was to start from Bangalore early in the morning at about 4 am so that we can reach the Bandipur forest entrance by 6 am when the gate opens for vehicles.

The advantage of entering the forest in the early morning is, we have a much higher chance of spotting animals that are still roaming around until the roads get busy with vehicles.

& WE GOT LATE

However, we got a bit late and so decided to push our travel to the evening so that we can spot some animals which come close to the roads at sunset.

We started from Bangalore in the afternoon. It was probably the wrong decision to travel in the afternoon since the roads in Bangalore were crowded. It took a while to exit the crowded city limits. Even after entering the Bangalore-Mysore Express Highway, the roads were full of slow-moving vehicles all over.

Taj Briyani Paradise Ramanagra

Our first stop was at Taj Biryani Paradise for a late lunch. The name made us think that they will have a lot of choices of Biryani but had just one type, even though they had a variety of other food. However, it was very good food, and everyone enjoyed the lunch.

Taj Biryani Paradise at Ramanagara in the Bangalore – Mysore Express Highway – a good place for Biryani lovers.

We reached the Mysore area by around 4 pm. To skip the city traffic, we took the ring road that goes around Mysore city and that turned out to be a good decision. We stopped by a coffee shop at the ring road to grab some food before we entered the forest area.

NOTE: Bandipur forest road is closed between 9 pm to 6 am and no vehicles can drive through the forest during this time for the safety of animals as well as travellers.

NIGHT DRIVING THROUGH THE BANDIPUR FOREST

Bandipura Wildlife

This was the most interesting part of our Bangalore to Wayanad road trip. We reached the Bandipur Forest area by evening. Even though there was a toll booth just before the forest checkpoint, we could not find anyone collecting the toll. I think the toll booth was not operational yet.

We expected some checking and security at the forest checkpoint, but it was just a small station with a single forest officer casually standing in the road and watching the vehicles passing by. We didn’t have to stop the car since he didn’t seem to pay attention.

We entered the forest limits by 5:30 pm. The ambiance completely changed once we entered the silent, calm, and dark forest area. The roads were extremely good, and we tempted to drive too fast but there were animal crossing warning signs everywhere and we too didn’t want an encounter with animals.

We decided to drive slowly looking for animals on both sides of the roads. Kids were very excited when they saw the first flock of deer near the roads. They counted about 50 before we passed the area but there were much more than that.

WHAT WE SAW DURING OUR DRIVE THROUGH BANDIPUR

It was like a zoo where we find a lot of animals trapped in small areas. But nature didn’t disappoint us. We saw a lot of deers, sambar deers, and wild elephants during our 2-hour long drive through the Bandipur forest and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

In addition, a lot of monkeys were spotted at various places, especially close to the villages on the Kerala side. If you are a bird watcher, you will see a lot of rare birds but stopping the car in the forest is not allowed;

so, you may miss the photographs. We clicked a lot of photos of the animals from the car though.

FINALLY REACHING WAYANAD

Wayanad Enterance

We exited the forest area and entered the Sultan Bathery town by around 7 pm. It took us about 7 hours from Bangalore to reach Wayanad. We spent quite a lot of time searching for pit stops for coffee, snacks, lunch, and just relaxing. If you drive without any major stops, you can cover the Bangalore – Wayanad route in about 5 hours or even less.

BEAUTIFUL WAYANAD

Wayanad is a very green destination and the entire district of Wayanad is very scenic with a lot of trees and hills all over. In fact, even after exiting the reserve forests, we didn’t feel much difference on the Kerala side since the places were very green and lush after the summer rains Kerala received this year.

The most exciting part of our Bangalore to Wayanad road trip was our scenic drive through the Bandipur forests. But once we entered the Wayanad region, almost every place was scenic with lush green forests.

REACHING OUR WAYANAD STAY

Brookside Resort Wayanad

We reached Lakkidi by late evening and we were tired even though we all enjoyed the entire drive to its best. It was drizzling when we reached the resort. While we were driving from Bangalore, we received a call from the resort mentioning that some road repair work is going on in the road to the resort.

They suggested we park our car in a safe private property near the highway, and they arranged a jeep for us to travel to the resort from the parking area.

The driver helped us to unload our baggage from the car and moved them all to the jeep. Because of the road work, kids got a free off-road jeep drive!

ABAD BROOKSIDE WAYANAD

When we reached the resort, we got a fantastic treat for the eyes. When the drizzling stopped, the entire area was covered with mist, which suddenly came from nowhere. There wasn’t any sign of mist until a few minutes ago.

We stayed in the reception for some time watching the mist passing through the woods. Lakkidi is one of the most scenic areas in Wayanad which gets covered with magical mists unexpectedly and throughout the season.

In a few minutes, we completed the check-in and moved to our private cottage along the brook (now we know the reason why the property is named ‘Brookside’). Our entire stay in Brookside resort was very relaxing and enjoyable. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool, badminton, table tennis, caroms, and other indoor/outdoor games.

BANGALORE To WAYANAD ROAD TRIP TIPS

Here are a few important tips to keep in mind when driving from Bangalore on a weekend trip or for holidays:

  • Plan your trip so that you will exit the Bandipur forest road before the closing time. You cannot drive through the forests after 9 pm. Once the roads are closed, the gates will be opened only at 6 am.
  • If you prefer to go by bus, you can reach Wayanad and rent a self-drive rental car. Self-drive rental cars are becoming popular and there are many options available. Check out this list of rental car agencies in Kerala . Some of them have offices in Wayanad and will deliver the car to you at the bus stop.
  • The best time to spot animals is early morning. If you can reach the forest entrance just before 6 am and if you are one of the first few vehicles to enter the forest, you will have much higher chances of spotting animals.
  • You won’t find any shops or restaurants in the forest limits. Carry snacks and food especially if you have kids with you.
  • Do not exit your vehicle in the forest area. Animals may approach you unexpectedly and avoid taking such risks since help may not reach you immediately in case something goes wrong.
  • Follow big trucks if you notice wild elephants close to the road. Even though the elephants found here are not very aggressive, it is always better to be on the safer side.

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Our Kerala road trip itinerary

Hello friends! We are back from an awesome Bangalore to Kerala road trip. And I am all excited to share our Kerala road trip itinerary with you all. Off late, we have been enjoying a lot of road trips. And if you are a regular reader on the blog, you already know about them. Some of our road trips across India that we did in recent past include :

Our 3 weeks Bangalore to Madhya Pradesh road trip

A road trip to Goa from Bangalore, working from Goa for 2 weeks

Our road trip to Rameshwaram, Madurai, Chettinad, Karaikudi and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu

A 4 days road trip from Bangalore to Pondicherry

After enjoying these road trips across India, we decided to once again explore God’s own country – Kerala . Years back, we had visited Kerala. And on that trip, we visited the hills of Munnar , stayed in a houseboat in Alleppey on the Kerala backwaters and did river safari in Thekkady. However, we couldn’t get enough of Kerala on this trip. And since then, we were yearning to visit Kerala again. So, finally materialised our Bangalore to Kerala road trip.

Bangalore to Kerala road trip planning

To be honest with you, Kerala has so many beautiful places to visit. Charming green hills, beautiful coastlines, unique backwaters and historical places. That it was really difficult for us to decide which place to include and which to exclude. We had a one week vacation in Kerala planned. Thus, we could accommodate only as many places as comfortably possible in one week. So, we decided on several possible Kerala road trip itineraries. And then decided on the one which everyone in the group liked the most. So, here are all the Kerala road trip itineraries that we delved upon.

Bangalore to coastal Kerala road trip itinerary for one week

Bangalore -> Kannur (day 1) | Bekal day trip from Kannur (day 2) | Kannur to Kochi (day 3) | Kochi to Athirapally waterfalls day trip (day 4) | Kochi to Alleppey via Marari beach (day 5) | Alleppey to Varkala (day 6) | Varkala to Kovalam (day 7) | Kovalam to Madurai via Kanyakumari (day 8) | Madurai to Bangalore (Day 9)

Although it excited us so much to do the complete coastal Kerala road trip on this road trip from Bangalore to Kerala. But, we just couldn’t make up our minds to leave the hills completely behind. Hence materialised some more Bangalore to Kerala road trip plans.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Week long Kerala road trip itinerary 2

Bangalore -> Wayanad (day1 & day 2) | Wayanad to Athirapally (day 3) | Athirapally to Kochi (day 4) | Kochi to Alleppey via Marari beach (day 5) | Alleppey to Varkala (day 6) | Varkala to Kovalam (day 7) | Kovalam to Madurai via Kanyakumari (day 8) | Madurai to Bangalore (Day 9)

Then we thought, we could as well leave Wayanad out of this itinerary. Because Wayanad is quiet close to Bangalore. And thus, we can do any long weekend trip to Wayanad easily. Thus materialised the next week long Kerala road trip itinerary.

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Week long Kerala road trip itinerary 3

Bangalore -> Coimbatore (day 1) | Coimbatore to Kochi via Athirapally (day 2) | Kochi to Vagamon (Day 3) | Vagamon to Munnar (day 4& 5) | Munnar to Alleppey (day 6) | Alleppey to Varkala (day 7) | Varkala to Kovalam (day 8) | Kovalam to Madurai via Kanyakumari (day 9) | Madurai to Bangalore (Day 10)

Unfortunately, the above itinerary was adding an extra day to our trip. Thus, we decided to drop Vagamon from our itinerary and go with this final one.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Week long Kerala road trip itinerary 4

Bangalore to Coimbatore (day 1) | Coimbatore to Kochi via Athirapally (day 2) | Kochi to Munnar (day 3, 4 & 5) | Munnar to Alleppey (day 6) | Alleppey to Kovalam via Varkala (day 7) | Kovalam to Madurai via Kanyakumari (day 8) | Madurai to Bangalore (Day 9)

And thus started our Bangalore to Kerala road trip.

Bangalore to Kerala Road Trip Map

You can choose any of the above road trip itineraries as per your choice. For instance, if you are not that excited about the hills, you can choose the Bangalore to Coastal Kerala road trip itinerary. But, if you are more excited about the hills and don’t mind missing on some of the beaches, you can choose from the next 3 itineraries. Also, Kanyakumari is not in Kerala. But, we were not able to visit here on our previous road trip to Madurai and Rameshwaram earlier this year. So, we included it in our trip itinerary. If you have time, you can as well exclude Kanyakumari. And rather include some other place in Kerala in your trip itinerary. Here’s one example of a trip where you could absolutely start from Kerala and end in Kerala :

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Week long Kerala road trip itinerary 5

Bangalore -> Kannur (day 1) | Kannur to Kochi (day 2) | Kochi to Athirapally waterfalls day trip (day 3) | Kochi to Alleppey via Marari beach (day 4) | Alleppey to Varkala (day 5) | Varkala to Kovalam (day 6) | Kovalam to Munnar (day 7) | Munnar to Wayanad (day 8) | Wayanad to Bangalore (day 9)

And, best case, if you have enough time at hand, here we suggest a road trip from Bangalore to Kerala that can cover all the highlights of Kerala. But, it is definitely way longer than one week.

Bangalore to Kerala road trip – Kerala road trip itinerary covering all highlights of Kerala

Bangalore -> Kannur (day 1) | Bekal day trip from Kannur (day 2) | Kannur to Kochi (day 3) | Kochi to Athirapally waterfalls day trip (day 4) | Kochi to Kumarakom (day 5, 6) | Kumarakom to Alleppey (day 7) | Alleppey to Varkala (day 8) | Varkala to Kovalam (day 9) | Kovalam to Thekkady (day 10) | Thekkady to Munnar (day 11) | Munnar (day 12,13) | Munnar to Vagamon (day 14) | Vagamon to Wayanad (day 15)

Details of the above Bangalore to Kerala road trip

Day 1 : bangalore to coimbatore, bangalore to coimbatore driving duration : 8 hrs including breakfast and lunch breaks., total distance covered driving from bangalore to coimbatore : ~360 km, where to stay in coimbatore : hotel c a g pride, pro tip: start as early from your home in bangalore as possible to avoid bangalore traffic..

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Except for Wayanad or Kannur, driving directly to any other place in Kerala will take too much time. Since, we were traveling with kids. And as usual, didn’t want to overexert them. So, after much consideration we decided to halt for the first night in Coimbatore. So can you. As,

  • It is a well developed town where you can stock up for rest of the trip.
  • And you can visit Adiyogi Center near Coimbatore
  • Further, a road trip from Coimbatore to Athirapally would give you a chance of driving through Palakkad. Another beautiful green belt of Kerala. Although we very much wanted to halt in Palakkad and explore around. But, we have saved that for another day.

So, visit the Adiyogi Center and then stay overnight in Coimbatore. You can browse this list of hotels in Coimbatore for your stay.

Day 2 : Coimbatore to Kochi via Athirapally & Palakkad

Coimbatore to athirapally driving distance : ~3 hr 30 mins , 165 km, athirapally to kochi driving distance : ~2 hr 30 mins , 80.5 km, where to stay in kochi : hotel p j princess regency.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Above is the hotel in which we stayed in Kochi. Although there are numerous stay options in Kochi. You can browse them here . Also, there are many heritage hotels in Fort Kochi area. You can try booking one of those. Because of lack of ample parking, we didn’t book them. But I really liked the vibe of some of these hotels. And also found their reviews to be very strong. These include :

The Sunset Bay

CSI Heritage Bungalow

Anyways, coming back to the day. Start early after having breakfast at your hotel in Coimbatore. Then drive from Coimbatore to Athirapally waterfalls . Since we visited right after the monsoons, the waterfalls were in full volume. If you also visit in October, you will have similar experience. We spent couple of hours at Athirapally falls. And then drove from Athirapally to Kochi. Thus, our complete trip from Coimbatore to Kochi via Athirapally was covered in 9 hrs including the halt for lunch.

PS: Listening to the sound of music at Athirapally Waterfalls

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

If you drive directly from Coimbatore to Kochi, it will take 4.5 hours only for the same. So, if you want to rather spend more time in Kochi, you can skip Athirapally waterfalls altogether.

Also, if you get time in Kochi in morning or evening, do try this Fort Kochi Heritage walking tour .

Day 3 : Kochi to Munnar road trip

Kochi to munnar driving distance : ~ 127 km, time taken to drive from cochin to munnar : ~ 4 hrs, where to stay in munnar : abad copper castle.

Being one of the most famous hill stations in Kerala, there is no dreath of hotels, homestays and airbnbs in Munnar.  You can browse the list here . Better to book online in advance as the place is so famous amongst tourists in Kerala. We booked Abad Copper Castle. Because we wanted to have ample parking space. As well as a mid-budget hotel to stay in. And also, a little further than the main town of Munnar, amidst greenery.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Post breakfast, drive from Cochin to Munnar. The road trip from Kochi to Munnar is one of the most scenic road trips in India . This road trip brought back memories of our road trip from Kochi to Munnar years back. On the way you get to stop at the Cheeyappara Waterfalls and one of the many spice gardens of Kerala where you can take a guided tour and even buy spices. Well, can a trip to Kerala really complete without a tour of the spice gardens of Kerala ? The whole state is world famous for it’s spices after all.

If you decide to stay Abad Copper Castle like us, and start your day early from Cochin, you will reach Munnar by lunch time. You can then spend the second half of the day exploring some of these places which are very near to the hotel –

  • Pothamedu View Point
  • Attukal Waterfalls

PS: you can get a cab from hotel if you don’t want to drive yourself.

Read : 4 days Munnar trip itinerary covering the length and breadth of the place

Day 4 : Munnar sightseeing

Munnar, Kerala

Today, do a local sightseeing in Munnar. Cover these places as a part of sightseeing in Munnar :

  • Flower Garden
  • Photo Point
  • Elephant Ride
  • Mattupetty Dam
  • Mattupetty Tea Factory
  • Boating Center
  • Kundala Dam and Boating
  • Top Station

Day 5 : Munnar sightseeing continued

Munnar, Kerala

Once again, spend the day covering another set of beautiful places in Munnar, in a different direction.

  • Eravilukam National Park
  • 8th Mile Gap View Point
  • Talliar Valley
  • Lakkam Waterfakks
  • Marayoor Sandal Wood Forest

If you are not that interested in the above then there are a lot of other places to explore in Munnar itself. You can rather stay back and explore these places in Munnar :

  • Waterfalls and wild animal spotting zones which are offbeat, locals can guide you to the same.

Day 6: Road trip from Munnar to Alleppey

Munnar to alleppey driving distance : 180 km, driving duration from munnar to alleppey : ~ 5 hrs, where to stay in alleppey : sterling lake palace, alleppey.

Earlier, we have already s tayed on a houseboat in Alleppey . And also taken a boat cruise on the backwaters of Kerala when on our trip to Kumarakom . So, this time around, we just wanted to stay by the backwaters. In a serene resort in Alleppey. And enjoy the calm atmosphere that is much associated with the backwaters of Kerala. So, we stayed in Alleppey at Sterling Lakeside resort . And after continuous driving for days, just relaxed for the day here. We didn’t do any specific sightseeing in Alleppey. Rather, we enjoyed the complimentary sunset cruise on the backwaters of Kerala offered by the resort. And then relaxed in the swimming pool there.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

But, if this is your first trip to Alleppey or you have not stayed in a houseboat in Kerala. We highly recommend staying in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala instead of a hotel. Because that is definitely a lifetime experience. Here’s a list of things you can do in Alleppey for your first time visit.

An alternative to staying in Alleppey is staying in Kumarakom. Kumarakom is located on another end of Lake Vagamon, one of the largest backwater lakes of Kerala. And Alleppey is located at the opposite side. There’s a lot more to do in Kumarakom. Including venturing through the famous Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary . And a lot of other things. Here’s the details from our previous visit to Kumarakom :

10 things to do in Kumarakom , Kerala

Day 7: A long day driving from Alleppey to Kovalam via Varkala

Alleppey to varkala driving distance : 110 km, ~ 3 hrs, varkala to trivandrum (thiruvananthapuram) driving distance : 35 km, ~ 1 hr, driving duration from alleppey to thiruvananthapuram by road : ~ 4 hrs, where to stay in thiruvananthapuram / kovalam : vivanta by taj.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Kovalam is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Kerala. It is romantic, serene and a dream of travellers. But unfortunately, all the resorts in Kovalam were exorbitantly priced or booked when we tried our luck. So, we decided to stay in Thiruvananthapuram – the capital city of Kerala which is just at a 15km distance from the Kovalam beach. We got a really good deal at the Vivanta Hotel in Thiruvananthapuram that included both breakfast and dinner in the deal. So, it was a steal.

But if you book early, you can book your stay in a beach side resort in Kovalam like the Leela Kovalam for a really luxurious vacation!

What we had to give up in the process of staying in Trivandrum, was staying right on a beach. But it didn’t feel like a big loss given our recent trips to Goa. Wherein we have stayed at some of the best beaches in Goa including a beach hut stay at Palolem Beach in Goa , Biera Mar Beach Resort right on the Benaulim beach for our 2 weeks of Goa workcation and the very beautiful Agonda beach on our last trip to Goa.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Today start your day as early in the morning as possible. Post breakfast in Alleppey, drive to Varkala. The driving distance from Alleppey to Varkala is just 110km. Your first stop should be Kappil beach near Varkala. As you approach the beach, you will drive through a stretch of road with the sea on one side and backwater lakes on the other. It is definitely going to be a highlight of your trip like it was for ours.

Varkala is a beautiful coastal town in Kerala. And it is particularly famous for it’s “backpackers” vibe. There are so many cute cafes and beautiful hostels in Varkala. We had our lunch at the Inda cafe which is located at the Varkala cliff and is the most popular cafe of Varkala. There after, stroll to the Varkala beach. It is one of the most popular beaches in Kerala. And you will know why as soon as you reach here. It is a neat and clean beach with a dramatic backdrop of the mountain cliff.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

After spending time at the Varkala beach, head to Thiruvananthapuram. The drive from Varkala to Thiruvananthapuram is going to take around 1 hour.

And after checkin, headed to the beach in Kovalam. After which return back for dinner. And enjoy a good night’s rest.

Day 8: Kovalam to Kanyakumari day trip, overnight halt at Madurai

Today drive from Thiruvananthapuram to Madurai via Kanyakumari. This is going to be a really long day. If it is possible for you, I highly recommend extending your itinerary by a day. And taking a halt at Kankyakumari.

Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari driving distance : ~ 95 km

Driving duration from thiruvananthapuram to kanyakumari: ~ 2 hr 30 mins, kanyakumari to madurai driving distance : ~ 250 km, driving duration from kanyakumari to madurai : ~ 4 hrs, where to stay in madurai : amika hotel madurai.

Today, we do a day trip via Kanyakumari while driving from Thiruvananthapuram / Kovalam to Madurai. Since we just have few hours to spend in Kanyakumari, we visit the main highlights of the town like the Kanyakumari beach, the Kanyakumari Temple and Vivekanand Rock Memorial. The good news is that all these places are located close to each other.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Here’s our upcoming detailed writeup on spending a day in Kanyakumari :

Kanyakumari sightseeing in one day

And then around 4:30pm, start from Kanyakumari to Madurai. Reaching Madurai by 6:30pm. Good to book a hotel in Madurai which is  We booked Amika Hotel near Madurai Airport which was right on the highway.

If it is possible for you, we highly recommend staying for a night in Kanyakumari. Since, there are so many more places to see and things to do in Kanyakumari. And then there are some really beautiful sea side resorts in Kanyakumari.

Or else, it is also possible to base yourself in Trivandrum. And do a day trip to Kanyakumari from Trivandrum. There are several day tour options from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari. And you can also hire a cab from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari for a day trip.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Also, If you have time at hand and you are interested to explore the town of Madurai, here are our blog posts from our previous trip to Madurai to help you out:

Why you should visit Thirumalai Nayakar Palace Madurai

Things you should know before you visit Meenakshi Amman Temple Madurai

Places to see and things to do in Madurai in a day

A complete guide to temple hopping in the temple town of Madurai

Day 9: Madurai to Bangalore

Finally arrived the last day of our Bangalore to Kerala road trip. Today, post breakfast, we checked out from our hotel in Madurai. And proceeded back to Bangalore. The drive from Madurai to Bangalore is a smooth one. All through NH44. Which is one of the most excellent highways in India. But, try to start as early in the morning as possible to be able to reach Bangalore in time. And avoid the traffic in the city which starts to build up in the day.

wayanad trip from bangalore quora

Hope you enjoyed this virtual Kerala road trip with us. And the alternative Kerala road trip itineraries that I have suggested for Bangalore to Kerala road trip will help you plan your trip to Kerala in the best way that suites you. Do share your thoughts on how you liked the post…..

General tips on planning this road trip across Kerala

  • Start most of your days on this trip as early as possible. We missed a few spots here and there because we started our day little late.
  • Most of the highways in Kerala are 2 lanes only, which means you often will drive slower than anticipated by google.
  • Buy Kerala chips from Alleppey and homemade chocolates from Munnar, spices from Kanyakumari or Kovalam.
  • This trip itinerary mostly covers naturally beautiful places in Kerala. If you want to include temples and museums, please feel free to add more days as required.
  • Finding clean washrooms can be a task, so, use one when you see one 🙂
  • Cards work everywhere, in shops and petrol pumps. If not cards then phone pay works. So, you really don’t need to carry too much cash on you.
  • Pack for both beach vacation as well as winter vacation as you are going to encounter both cold and hot climates on this one week trip to Kerala itself!
  • Have general medicines and latest prescription with you.
  • Also, pack your swimwear for the coastal resorts and beaches.
  • Wear comfortable shoes at all hilly places and slippers on beaches. I forgot to change into my shoes in Athirapally and ended up slipping and spraining my ankle which troubled me for next few days.
  • Carry mosquito repellants with you. Even the best of best hotels that we stayed at had mosquitos.
  • If possible, return to Bangalore on a week day as weekends are getting very busy, particularly after entering the city, it takes a lot of time to reach our home.
  • Also, try visiting in off season, and avoid holiday seasons, we had to drop quiet a few sightseeing because of rush, particularly in Munnar.
  • The roads in Kerala are narrow. Even the national highways in Kerala are only 2 lane. So, you will be forced to go slower than what google map suggests actually. Always add 1-2 hours extra to the suggested time and then plan your day accordingly.

Cost of our one week Kerala road trip itinerary

  • We stayed in some high end and some mid budget hotels. Our total cost of stay (with breakfast included) came to INR 35000/- per room which was shared by 2 people. So, INR 17500 per person.
  • Most of the time, we had lunch at a roadside south Indian joint and dinner at our hotel. Overall food cost was INR 3000/- per head or INR 6000/- for a couple.
  • We mostly visited naturally beautiful places on our one week Kerala road trip itinerary and thus hardly spent over  INR 1000/- on tickets.
  • In total, we drove ~2000km on this trip. Our total fuel cost was around INR 15000/-

Overall, for one individual, the cost came to around INR 30000/- for the complete one week trip

Hi Mihika, thanks for the kind words Like I mentioned in the blog, most of the first timers prefer Munnar – Alleppey – Thekkady circuit which can be easily done in 6 nights. Spend first 3 nights in Munnar and subsequent one night each in Thekkady and Alleppey

I am planning with my family in october with 7 members adult and 5 childrens by car, please advise me kerala trip with mid budget for 7 days.

You can follow my itinerary if you liked it. But you can cut one place. Maybe spend 2 nights in Munnar or leave Kanyakumari for another trip. Then you will be able to cover rest everything in 7 days

Wayanad Trip From Bangalore

Hello travelers!

Nestled among the mountains of the western ghats, Wayanad is one of the loveliest hill stations of southern India. There are many good things about Wayanad like full of greenery, misty mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, dams, waterfalls, tea estates, coffee estates, historical caves, panoramic views, and top of it all – pleasant climate most of the year. With its rich flora and fauna, Wayanad is part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Wayanad is actually a large district that has varying altitudes between 700 meters and 2100 meters above sea level, which will appear in its climate as you pass by.

Well, if Wayanad is so big, then where all are we heading to? To start with, we will head to Soochipara waterfalls and/or Ziplining & Sky cycle. Depending on the season/month we are visiting Wayanad, we shall select one of these places (Waterfalls or Zipline) to visit. In rare cases when there is no crowd, we can even select both. There is a limit of 1200 tourists per day to the waterfalls.

An offbeat place called Attamala, a pretty little secret of Wayanad is next in our list. It has lush green tea estates accompanied by grand views of rolling hills, making it best place for a Glass Bridge. There are some jeeps ferrying people up and down to the Glass Bridge and the Attamala view point.

The next day, we will explore Edakkal caves that are home to one of the oldest human settlements with their rock engravings of the pre-historic era as proof. This hike of 1 hour will be a nice warm-up for the day. A pleasant view from the top of the caves will compensate for any loss of energy.

Places like Karlad lake and Karapuzha Dam or Banasura Sagar Dam are the tourist attractions we will tick off. Banasura is believed to be the largest earthen dam in the country, whereas Karapuzha Dam offers many adventure activities. It’s always a serene experience spending time in front of such a huge water body, especially waiting for the sunset. For those who are interested, Karlad Lake has a Boating option too.

Overall, Wayanad has many out-of-ordinary places, which we will run-into on this backpacking trip.

Day 0 - Journey to Wayanad!

  • Start from Bangalore, an overnight journey

Day 1 - Soochipara Waterfalls / Zipline, Digital Glass Bridge,

  • Cross Karnataka-Kerala border and head towards mountains of Wayanad.
  • Freshen up and f uel up with authentic Kerala Breakfast.
  • Take a journey towards Soochipara waterfalls that has a pool at the base of the falls. We need to walk about a kilometer inside the forest to reach falls. Take a well deserved dip in the falls, if allowed by forest authorities at that time based on the flow of water and climate conditions.
  • Note: There is a Forest Department limit of 1200 tourists to visit Soochipara falls per day. Everyone must stand in queue and take tickets. That’s why we are going here first. If the ticket counter closes by the time we reach there, we cannot help it.
  • (Optional) Visit Wayanad’s Longest Zipline & Skycycle adventure zone. Interested travelers may indulge in these adventure activities if they are open based on weather conditions.
  • Note: There is a limit to number of tickets for Zipline/Skycycle. Usually it’s very crowded over the weekend. Either wait time will be more or we might not get required tickets. We cannot help it as they don’t give preference to anyone.
  • Note: On rainy days, the local authorities might stop these adventure activities and we cannot help it again. Because of above 2 reasons, we made this as an optional activity.
  • This area is a good place to go on a nature walk around Tea Estates.
  • Finish quick Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
  • Head towards a beautiful location named Attamala which is in deep forest. 4×4 jeeps ferry tourists up and down over here. Interested folks may visit the famous Wayanad glass bridge that protrudes into the valley overlooking tea estates and rolling hills.
  • Head to the camp by late evening, refresh with evening Tea.
  • Bonfire with music between 8 to 10 PM. After this, we have to respect nature in Wayanad and enjoy our social gathering by sharing stories and playing games.
  • Hot dinner served in the cold climate.
  • Rest for the night in your assigned tents.

Day 2 - Edakkal Caves, Karapuzha or Banasura Dam, Karlad Lake Return to Bangalore

  • Wake up to the misty morning weather and fresh breeze of tea estates.
  • Have Breakfast, pack your bags, check out of our stay.
  • Explore stone age carvings of Edakkal Caves and enjoy a nice view from the top.
  • Visit very pretty Karlad Lake and spend some quality time. Interested people can go for pedal boating which is a peaceful experience.
  • Have Lunch at a local restaurant near Karlad. Note that food options are very limited around these places in Wayanad. We need to adjust with whatever is available for food at the time.
  • Give an evening visit to Karapuzha Dam that offers different adventure activities or Banasura Sagar Dam that has a beautiful setting of Banasura mountain in the middle of Western Ghats (only one of these).
  • Start return journey back towards Bangalore by late evening, stop for quick Dinner at a Dhaba, reach home before midnight.
