What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. AmaWaterways offers such popular upscale features as a top-deck swimming pool with swim-up bar and a big focus on cuisine; its multiple dining venues use high-quality ingredients and its Chef's Table experience is focused on fine local food and wine. The 106- to 196-passenger ships in Europe also have a wellness focus with small spas and fitness rooms and a fleet of bikes for use either on your own or on organized excursions.

AmaWaterways' partnership with Adventures by Disney means families are on board select chartered sailings on the Seine, Rhine and Danube. In addition to a big presence on all the main rivers of Europe, the line sails the Mekong and Nile, as well as the Chobe River of Botswana.

Butler service is part of the scene, and so are free-flowing cocktails, e-bikes and six dining options – all for a passenger contingent of fewer than 170.

Included shore excursions go beyond the standard tours that most lines offer, such as a visit to the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. If you prefer independent travel, Scenic provides a nifty GPS gadget about the size of a cellphone, loaded with maps and commentary that is automatically activated at points of interest. This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The past year put the entire travel industry through the wringer, perhaps no segment more so than cruising. Though the pandemic forced ships around the world to remain in port , readers nevertheless looked back fondly on their times at sea while ranking the world's top 10 river cruise lines for Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories, including river cruising.

Though many European countries have been off-limits for travelers, memories of recent trips to one of the world's iconic river cruising destinations helped inform voters' choices this year. Tauck moved up two places in T+L's 2021 rankings to grab the No. 2 spot with an eye-popping score above 96. The iconic river ships of No. 3 Viking Cruises also fared well this year, with readers giving the stalwart high marks, moving it up three places. Viking has river ships across Europe, of course, but also sails the Mekong and the Nile. In 2022, the company plans to launch trips on the Mississippi.

Other high-ranking lines won praise for their journeys outside the traditional rivers of Europe. No. 4 Aqua Expeditions, for example, sails to such destinations as Indonesia, Peru, and Vietnam. (The company's newest ship, the Aqua Nera, debuted this summer on the Amazon.) And No. 5 American Queen Steamboat Company, which didn't make T+L's top 10 last year, keeps its focus strictly domestic, with trips on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

But this year's highest-ranked line goes just about everywhere. No. 1 Uniworld Boutique River Cruises earned one of the highest scores of any cruise line — river or ocean — this year, impressing readers with flawless service, imaginative itineraries, top-flight design, and wonderful food. "We were treated like royalty," gushed one traveler who sailed on the Maria Theresa. "Our experience was an 11 out of 10." Can't do much better than that.

Among the newest in the fleet are the Bon Voyage, based in France, and the La Venezia, recently relaunched in Italy. And while readers certainly raved about the line's ships, they saved their highest praise for the ask-and-you-shall-receive mentality of the Uniworld crews. "My experience exceeded all expectations," said one traveler, who toured Europe on the Antoinette . "Staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure a pampered vacation. When one of our party asked if there was a guitar on board so we could sing in the parlor one evening, a staffer said he would arrange it — and proceeded to purchase a guitar at our stop the next day!" River cruise seems like a rip off. In particular, paying for excusions we would not necessary take. No wonder river cruises are much move expensive than sea cruises.I will stick to sea cruise. At least, you only pay for excursions, which you want to take.

Is a River Cruise for You? Ten Things to Know Before You Commit

Remember how I took to three European rivers—the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine—on three different ships last spring? You can now read the article I was on assignment to report: “ The River Cruise Revolution ,” just published in Condé Nast Traveler ’s August issue. Americans are flocking to river cruises in record numbers, making it one of the hottest trends in travel and leading river lines to launch a whopping 11 new ships on European waterways this year and 12 more next year. But will river cruising float your boat? You can click to see photos from my trips on Grand Circle Cruise Line’s M/S Bizet on the Seine , Uniworld’s S.S. Antoinette on the Rhine , and AmaWaterways’ AmaBella on the Danube , and you can read my article, but I thought I’d also lay out ten specific pros and cons to consider before committing to a river cruise:

1. River cruising removes the work and the risk from travel.

It's a no-brainer vacation, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the level of adventure and challenge you want from your trips. On a river cruise you need never struggle with a foreign language, decipher a map, read a road sign, or even pick up a guidebook. The down side is that your fellow passengers may be the sorts of people who don’t want to struggle with a foreign language, decipher a map, read a road sign, or pick up a guidebook.

2. You can’t plan around the weather.

The ship has to leave port when the ship has to leave port—which means you can’t wait till the fog clears to visit the castle with the stunning vistas or tailor your indoor versus outdoor activities to the weather forecast. Also, river water levels rise and fall; your ship could literally get stuck because the water level is too high or low.

3. You needn’t schlep from hotel to hotel.

You check in and unpack once.

4. Your time in port is limited to a few hours.

You get a tasting menu of many different places, but you can’t dive deeply into any.

5. There’s always something new to see out your window.

The shoreline is always changing, as are the vessels gliding by.

6. Depending on the cruise line, the port sightseeing can be slow-paced and tour guides mediocre.

There can be waits and delays while everyone is loaded onto and off buses, handed off to local guides, and moved as a group through famous landmarks. With most people aged 60 to 80, some ships—the Antoinette, for instance—offer a “gentle walkers” group for the less mobile. AmaWaterways sometimes offers an “active walkers” group, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a great guide. For me the exception to the lackluster sightseeing was on the Bizet : Passengers were always punctual, and the superlative guides orchestrated the exploration so that you could always go as quickly or slowly as you wanted and easily venture off on your own.

7. You spend a lot of time eating. And not in local restaurants.

Most people dine onboard because they’ve paid for three meals a day on the ship, and dining is at communal tables with other cruisegoers. Usually at breakfast and lunch there is a buffet as well as a menu, so you could grab something in 30 minutes, but dinner always takes two hours.

8. You meet few locals.

When you have only a few hours in a place and you’re with a group, you end up spending more time talking to people from the ship than to locals.

9. There may be bikes.

Some river ships carry bikes that you can use for free in port. In some spots AmaWaterways lets passengers bike from one port to the next and rejoin the ship.

10. There are no kids.

There may be the occasional teenager accompanying a grandparent, but child-friendly river cruises are uncommon: Cabins fit two occupants only, there’s little play space, and dinner is a drawn-out affair.

Next I’ll share my take on river cruising versus ocean cruising—for those of you who’ve sailed on big ships at sea and are wondering how river cruises differ. Stay tuned.

Castles on the Rhine, including medieval Marksburg Castle, tend to look prettiest from May through October.

By the time I got to the AmaBella , I had figured out my favorite spot on any river ship: the wheelhouse up top. Officially it’s off-limits to passengers, but friendly captains will let you in for a peek and a quick chat.

So we could see Melk’s famous Baroque abbey from the water, our captain sailed past the dock and rounded a bend onto the branch of the Danube where Melk Abbey sits. The only reason I know this is that I was on deck at 7:15 a.m. when he did it. Not all captains do this for passengers; the Scenic Ruby behind us did not.

Which river cruise is right for you?

Love the idea of a river cruise, but feel a little overwhelmed by all the choices?  What’s included and what isn’t? We’ve taken a look at five of the most popular river cruise lines to create an at-a-glance guide to help you with this exciting decision.

AmaWaterways 

If having all your expenses managed before you sail is important, you’ll love AmaWaterways . Not only are beer, wine and soft drinks included with lunch and dinner but you’ll also enjoy sparkling wine with breakfast and complimentary cocktails during Happy Hour. Shore excursions and special interest tours are also included in the cruise fee. On board, you’ll find that many of the spacious staterooms offer twin balconies – a French door and an outside balcony for an extra special experience.

Because great dining is key, all-inclusive AmaWaterways features the Main Dining Room, the Chef's Table Restaurant offering multi-course, wine-paired dinners, as well as light lunches and breakfast served in the lounge (full lunches and breakfast are served in the main dining room). Perhaps the most advertised of all river cruise lines, Viking includes a complimentary shore excursion in every port, but also offers optional shore excursion choices at an additional cost. Their staff of more than 4,000 English-speaking professionals welcome you on cruises that explore Europe, Russia, Asia and Egypt.

Locally-focused gourmet dining is in The Restaurant, on the outdoor Aquavit Terrace ® at the bow of the ship, or even on the upper sundeck. Wherever you choose to dine, beer, wine and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner, and optional Silver Spirit beverage packages are available for purchase that make other bar drinks all-inclusive. Specialty coffee and teas are always available and room service, stocked mini-bars and laundry are included for the higher-end Explorer Suites. Viking arranges for guests to enjoy bicycles and gym facilities ashore.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Uniworld sails luxury ships that host an average of just 130 passengers who enjoy all-inclusive shore excursions as well as the option to participate in unique specialty experiences, such as evening concerts in Vienna, offered at very reasonable prices. One onboard perk not found on many other river ships is a free laundry service for guests in higher-end suites and complimentary self-service guest laundry facilities for others.

Here Are the Top Selling River Cruise Line Brands, According to Travel Advisors

River cruising is gaining momentum in the travel advisor community.

According to the latest research from Travel Market Report, its 2022 Outlook on Trends in River Cruise , almost one in five travel advisors are grossing over $4 million in sales concentrating on river cruises, making it a lucrative niche for advisors, particularly those who are targeting high spenders and seasoned travelers.

There’s a lot to go into earning success in the river cruise market, but a good starting point is getting familiar with the players in the market, and the suppliers who offer river cruise itineraries around the world.

To get a sense of what river cruise lines are most often sold by travel advisors, and which ones have yet to make the jump, Travel Market Report asked 764 advisors their takes on which ones they sell, which ones they are top producers for, and which ones have they or haven’t they, heard of.

Here are the river cruise lines that were on top of their list:

1. AmaWaterways More than any other river cruise line, AmaWaterways is the choice for advisors. According to the Outlook, 38% of the more than 750 advisors surveyed say they sell the company and have been recognized as a producer. Another 41% of advisors surveyed say that they sell the company, but aren’t yet top producers for AmaWaterways. Just 2% of all advisors said they weren’t familiar with AmaWaterways, the lowest out of any of the 17 river cruise lines listed.

2. Viking Cruises Just below AmaWaterways is Viking Cruises, a company long seen as the torchbearer for the river cruise industry as a whole. According to the Outlook, 37% of advisors said they sell the company and are top producers for Viking, and another 37% said that they sell Viking, but are not producers, meaning 74% total of advisors sell Viking. Going back to Viking’s history as a driver of the segment, not even 1% of the total respondents said that they were not familiar with Viking.

3. Avalon Waterways Globus’ Avalon Waterways comes in third on the survey—25% of the respondents said they sell and are a top producer for Avalon, and another 36% said they sell it, but aren’t yet top producers. Avalon is also a well-known supplier for advisors as just 3% said they aren’t familiar with Avalon, though 35% said that they are aware of it, but don’t sell Avalon.

4. Uniworld/U by Uniworld The Travel Corporation’s Uniworld and U by Uniworld brand comes in fourth on the survey—a quarter of all respondents said that they sell the brand and are a top producer for it, the same as Avalon, and another 32% said that they sell the company but aren’t yet a top producer. Just 7% of all advisors said they weren’t familiar with Uniworld.

River Cruises Offer Pros and Cons for Budget Travel

River cruises offer pros and cons that are well worth considering. For travelers who want to see the world's great cities without investing stress, these trips have proven to be an excellent choice. Think about it: you'll only unpack once, you'll need not push through crowded train stations, and you'll have a lot more freedom of movement than any tour bus affords.

River cruises -- especially in Europe -- have become incredibly popular in recent years. Industry experts estimate that river cruise bookings have increased about 50 percent in the past 10 years. The Cruise Lines International Association, Inc. calculated that its members offered 170 river cruise vessels. and although the building boom is slowing a bit over recent years, it is not unusual for 15-20 new ships to enter service in a given year. 

Most of the travelers who favor river cruises are baby boomers in their retirement years. This is a market reality to which river cruise lines strongly respond. Senior travelers tend to like smaller ships, detailed assistance with even the smallest arrangements, and several tiers of involvement. Flashy entertainment is sometimes far down on the list of priorities.

Traditional river cruises do not cater to children or young families. In fact, some lines do not allow kids. The itineraries don't appeal so much to families as they do to history buffs and those who appreciate cultural and geographic diversity.

Smaller Ships are More Personal

It will come as no surprise that river cruise ships are quite different from ocean-going vessels. But many travelers don't stop to think about how that will impact their voyages.

A typical river cruise ship hosts fewer than 200 passengers for each itinerary. An ocean-going ship might house three times that many passengers on a single deck.

Because the numbers are relatively small, river cruises become far more personal. Some cruise lines take great advantage of this fact.

For example, on Grand Circle Cruise Lines , itineraries include a stop at either a local school or a visit to a local family sometime during the trip as part of the line's Discovery Series. The passenger list is divided into groups of eight and local transportation is arranged for the visit. You'll meet people who live in Bratislava and find out what daily life is like in the city. It's a dimension beyond checking off a series of tourist sites and sailing to the next port-of-call.

Grand Circle and other lines will invite you to a pastry demonstration, or you can visit the bridge as the captain navigates river locks.

Another plus with river cruising is that you are more likely to make friendships with fellow passengers. Acquaintances you strike up are not going to get lost in the crowd. That couple you met on Monday is likely to be sitting near you at breakfast on Tuesday morning.

Food Costs and Choices

As with all cruises, river voyages typically include most of your meals as part of the total costs. Meals tend to be served at one sitting, with open seating. Every table has a view.

Unlike many ocean-going trips, some river cruise lines often include beer, wine or soft drinks with dinner at no added charge. These offers vary, sometimes widely, by line.

Breakfasts and lunches are often served buffet-style, although a chef will prepare cooked-to-order omelets or sandwiches at one end of the buffet table.

Fixed food costs are a bonus for budget travelers since these expenses often are unpredictable on many trips. Train travelers usually eat in the cities they visit and sample local cuisine. On river cruises, you will miss out on this essential part of learning a new city's ways.

Cruise lines might serve goulash in Budapest and apple strudel in Vienna. But if you are intent on sampling these local specialties at local restaurants in port, you'll need to put forth extra money and effort.

Limited Entertainment Options

If lavish shipboard entertainment is your chief priority, river cruises probably won't satisfy.

Unlike ocean-going cruise lines that stage Vegas-style shows and provide floating casinos, the river cruise entertainment is limited to far more basic offerings.

You can visit the galley for a look at how more than 400 meals a day are prepared in a relatively small space.

You might see a folk dancing exhibition one night, or watch the crew become the cast in a talent night presentation.

The entertainment options reflect passenger preferences. River cruises are far more likely to attract travelers who would look forward to commentary over the loud speaker about the castles and monuments they are passing. These passengers enjoy sitting on deck, watching the scenery and sipping a cup of coffee.

Personally, I find that to be grand entertainment. But many other budget travelers would disagree.

Younger Travelers are Scarce

If you see a young person on a traditional river cruise, chances are it is an older grandchild who was chosen to accompany grandparents. Travelers under the age of 13 aren't likely to be found.

Many river cruises simply are not programmed for families. The entertainment programs, water slides and rock-climbing walls found on many ocean-going ships are far less likely on the river.

For years, the target audience for these trips has been the baby-boomer generation, and the median age on traditional ships is probably in the mid-60s. Many of the passengers are retired and simply want to spend some quiet time exploring places they've read about all of their lives.

As with any general rule, this one has notable exceptions. Some river cruise lines have sought out younger markets. Tauck, for example, offers its Bridges itineraries to destinations such as France. Family activities include a scavenger hunt through the Louvre. Uniworld markets a series of "family friendly" cruises designed for multi-generational family excursions.

Keep in mind that family friendly doesn't always mean budget friendly.

If you want to show your children Amsterdam , Vienna or Budapest , you'll need to think about train travel. River cruises usually cater to older adults.

Better Tour Options

Cruise lines have established the shore excursion business as a key profit center. You'll be urged to sign up with the cruise line before spaces are taken.

Although river cruise lines do offer some shore excursions at added cost, many of the basics for each port are covered in the price of the trip. You'll get at least an orientation talk for each port, and sometimes a few added tours.

River cruises frequently attract passengers with a variety of physical abilities. A few will skip the orientation tour, while many others will take that tour and return to the ship without any further explorations. A third group will use the included orientation tour to learn about additional locations to visit during their free time in port.

These itineraries frequently include such freedom for those discoveries, but some passengers are more interested in relaxation than exploration.

River cruise lines focus significant marketing efforts on extensions, which last up to a week and include a region or city adjacent to where the cruise begins or ends. These are often bus tours and sometimes include the same program directors you've had on the ship. Price these opportunities carefully. Sometimes, you can make similar arrangements at a lower cost.

Relatively High Daily Costs

Ocean-going cruise prices  usually are compared on the basis of daily costs. It's still possible to find bargains that come in under $150/day per person, although they are becoming scarce.

River cruises tend to cost quite a bit more than ocean-going trips. But making the cost comparisons between these two products usually is rather pointless. You'll enjoy different benefits in each excursion. Approach your attitude about price with that in mind.

As previously mentioned, port tours often are included in the price of a river trip. Ground transportation between port and airport typically is covered in the basic price. For European river cruises, rates below $250/day per person are becoming more difficult to find.

Tipping is an added cost for which you should budget. Remember that cruise workers usually derive their incomes from gratuities. If they serve you well, they deserve to be rewarded. On river cruises, you'll be asked to tip your program director separately from the crew. The crew receives a lump sum that you'll determine with guidance from the line.

Traveling alone ? Expect to pay a single supplement that will add as much as 50 percent to the cost of your trip. While this is an industry standard, it can vary by line, and some offer incentives for solo travelers .

River cruise cabins are rather small, but interior cabins are rare. The views are nice, and rooms with a balcony often are smaller and come at a higher rate. Twin beds are common.

River cruise lines will make your flight arrangements at an added cost. Some will offer free airfare incentives at slower times of the year. Those deals tend to sell out quickly.

As with other forms of cruising, there are lines that specialize in lower-cost river cruises and others that provide a more luxurious experience, with prices to match.

It's not always possible to categorize river cruise lines by price. The range is typically $250-$500/day per person, and note that great values can be found at all price points. Remember to shop for more than price. Each line offers a unique experience with features not found elsewhere.

Conclusions

Why do you want to take a cruise?

If you are primarily interested in the ship's amenities, river cruises won't rank at the top of your list.

But if you shop for cruises based on itineraries, a river cruise will often provide more time in port, better tour options and greater opportunities for independent explorations. The itinerary-based shopping model fits nicely with budget travel, where value is key.

Most river cruises are not a good choice for families or for people who enjoy extensive on-board entertainment. The daily costs for these trips generally are higher than for ocean-going cruises, although that is not always the case.

But river cruises offer an excellent opportunity to explore a region without a lot of packing and unpacking. Details are handled by the cruise line, and personal service is enhanced because the passenger list is relatively small.

Arriving in Your Destination

You will typically have to fly, most times internationally, to get to your river cruise destination. Often times, the river cruise will be departing from the city to which you fly into, making for easy airport to river cruise transfers – often provided by the river cruise operator. But sometimes, you will have a longer coach transfer from an arrival city airport to your smaller river port to embark your river cruise. Again, these transfers are often provided as included or for an extra fee by most river cruise operators.

Of course, since most international river cruises are about 7 nights long, you may want to extend your vacation by adding a pre- or post-cruise extension – either offered as a pre-packaged option or fully customized by your River Cruise Artist. River Ship Embarkation

The simplicity of river cruise embarkation is truly one of it’s biggest differences from ocean cruising – and one of the many benefits. When you arrive at your ship, you can typically be dropped off just a few steps from the dock. You will step right on to your river ship into the lobby from the dock, and be welcomed by a highly trained and efficient service-oriented staff at the front desk.

You will show your passports and any travel documents that you have from River Cruise Your Way, and you will be quickly checked-in like a hotel and receive your key or cabin card to access your cabin. If your cabin is not yet ready, staff will show you to the lounge or dining room to relax and enjoy a drink and snack.

Don’t worry about your luggage – on most river cruises your luggage will be kept outside in a secured area – so you don’t have to lug it onboard with you to check-in. Once you have your cabin assigned, your luggage will be brought to your cabin by one of the ship’s crew. This is also a chance for you to ask questions about your cabin to ensure you understand lighting, amenities, etc.

One thing most river cruises do on embarkation day is the life vest drill – where you will don your live vest that is located in your cabin, and get a quick review from staff offering assistance. This is an easy and painless process that usually lasts just a few minutes.

Typical of any cruise, the average cabin is not large like most hotel rooms, but on most river cruise ships the cabin size is quite adequate. River cruise operators have studied cabin size and guest satisfaction and continue to make strides to make their cabins welcoming and comfortable. Of course, larger cabins or suites are available on most cruise ships for an added cost if you really want room to stretch out.

Most cruise ships are just a few levels – typically three. The higher your cabin, the likely the more it will cost. The least expensive cabin options are typically on the lower level with limited windows or port-hole views – but luckily inside cabins with no windows are extremely rare on river ships.

Many cabins on the upper level or levels come with some type of balcony – either a french balcony where you can open up and lean out, or a full balcony with a sitting space. Typically the bedding on a river cruise is one large queen size or king size bed – but many operators will offer the ability to separate the beds into two twins. There are rarely river cruise cabins that accommodate more than two guests.

River cruise cabins, like hotels, come in a range of quality of furnishings and amenities, and this will depend on the price point and the cruise line you select. You can go budget – and enjoy a wonderful simple cabin, or plan to travel in luxury and enjoy the best of appointments. This will depend on your budget and your River Cruise Artist will help you find the right cabin for you.

Most cabins come with a television often with movies available. They all have bathrooms that typically feature a stand-up shower. The bathrooms are small, like most cruise cabins, but roomy enough to be comfortable. Once you select your perfect river cruise, your River Cruise Artist will inform you of all the cabin amenities and what to expect with your selected cabin category.

River Cruise Dining

From breakfast to dinner and in-between, dining on a river cruise vacation is typically a much anticipated, relaxing experience. Many cruise operators have spent much effort to upgrade their dining offerings to give their travelers a truly wonderful experience.

Dining on river cruises is included in your river cruise price. This includes breakfast, lunch & dinner, select snacks, select drinks, and even the occasional off-ship meal that is associated with a shore excursion that prevents you from enjoying a meal onboard.

For breakfast, most cruise operators offer a buffet style breakfast – typically with a menu for those not wanting to explore the buffet. This is usually served early enough to allow time to prepare for your day’s port excursion, and is a window of time, typically over two hours – like from 7-9 am. Many cruises also offer an early-bird continental breakfast option for those early risers looking for coffee and a danish. Often the breakfast buffet will include many traditional American offerings, but also look for some local specialties as well.

Lunches also can be buffet or plated, but there is always a variety. Some operators offer a plated choice and a salad bar to please your palate.

Dinner is a more formal affair on most river cruise ships. Not formal as in tuxedo, but formal as in smart casual, relaxing, take your time, sit down plated multi-course meal. Enjoy a nice selection of appetizers, main courses, sides, and desserts – all with amazing service from your servers. Sometimes themed dinners or special dinner options will be available.

The river cruise chefs will typically tempt your taste buds with amazing selections of dishes using local produce, and often organically sources foods. You will get to experience your destination – not just on excursions, but in some of the dining options onboard that your local chef carefully prepares.

You may be wondering about drinks during your meals. Most cruise lines now offer complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks with your lunches and dinners. You can of course order other drinks from the bar at an extra cost. Complimentary water is also typically provided in your cabin, replenished daily. There are also self-serve tea and coffee usually available all the time.

Most river ship dining rooms are open seating, offering a mix of tables from 2 to 8 or even more. This gives you the opportunity for intimate meals or a chance to mix with fellow cruisers to enjoy a meal together.

Port Excursions

Your port excursions on a river cruise are typically included in the cruise fare you pay. So when your ship stops in port, you will be able to join an included port excursion that usually includes either a guided walking tour or a coach transfer with a guide to nearby attractions or historical sites.

Sometime, cruise lines will offer a choice in port excursions – and allow you to select from two or even three when you check-in for your cruise. Also, some cruise lines will offer the included excursion and then other excursion options that may cost additional. These are usually specialty excursions that may well be worth the additional cost.

Since river cruise ships have only usually up to 160 or 180 passengers, the excursion process is not very challenging. There will typically be a number of coaches and guides waiting at the dock area when the ship arrives and you will join your assigned guide or coach for your tour.

Sailing & Locks

Sailing the rivers of the world on a fabulous vacation is a wonderful experience itself. The waters are usually very calm so there is little to no feeling of movement while you cruise. This is a perfect opportunity for you to see the destination you are sailing through – view castles, quaint villages, natural beauty, and local people going about their daily routines. Sometimes the cruising part of your trip can be just as rewarding as the time in ports.

On many of the world’s rivers that are currently available to cruise on vacation, you will find yourself going through a lock system. This is a fascinating experience as your ship enters typically a relatively small confined space, stops, and then your ship will either raise or lower, depending on the direction of travel. Sometimes, these locks can change the elevation of a ship more than 100 feet!

Another aspect of your cruising experience to look for – occasionally, particularly on European rivers, the bridges your ship sails under will be too low for the ship in its normal configuration. If this happens, sometimes due to lots of rain and high-water levels, your ship’s crew will ask everyone to exit the top roof terrace deck, and the captain’s wheel house will lower into the ship making for a fully flat top. Sometimes it looks like your ship will hit the bridge, but be confident that your experienced and professional crew know what they are doing.

Tipping on your river cruise is often a enigma that needs some research prior to departure. Although there are today a few river cruise lines that include gratuities with the cruise fare, most offer an ‘expected’ tipping amount prior to disembarkation. The typical amount would be from $10-12 per person/per day, but can fluctuate. Also, keep in mind this is a recommended tipping amount and you can always tip more (or less) if you feel it is warranted.

Most cruise lines offer a ‘gratuity envelope’ the day before disembarkation for a cash tip that will be given to the ship’s captain for company approved dispersal between all crew members. Some cruise lines offer the ability to add the cruise gratuities to your bill and pay with your credit card as well – which is a convenience for those that want to carry less cash.

Keep in mind you can always tip any crew member at any time that offers above and beyond service to you – your cabin attendant, your meal server, your bar tender, and so on. But please be discreet when doing so.

One thing to consider when deciding on your gratuity is that the crew members offer exceptional service, work all day and all night, and are away from their family for months at a time in order to make your vacation dreams come true. So please be generous and show your appreciation to them all through your tipping at the end of your river cruise.

Onboard Activities

River cruise ships are smaller than the big ocean liners, so they don’t have some of the wild amenities those ships have. But don’t fear, you will enjoy the onboard amenities and activities river cruises have to offer. With port times in fabulous and iconic port destinations taking up much of your days and sometimes evenings, your time onboard will be spent in your cabin, on the top deck, or in the main common areas of the ship.

Your cabin is typically a comfortable size, sometimes a fair bit larger than the big ships cabin sizes. You will have typically a TV, room to plug in your own electronics, a nicely appointed bathroom, and usually large windows and/or a balcony for private viewing of the scenery as you cruise along the rivers. Sometimes you can order room service for some intimate in-room dining.

The top deck of many river cruise ships is a place where, during good weather, you can go to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and get some fresh air. The top deck is a great place for activities which vary by river cruise line or ship – but may include hot tub, swimming, human-sized chess, exercise areas, lounge chairs to enjoy the sun, and more! Just be aware, sometimes you will go under low bridges and the crew will let you know to temporarily go below deck until past the bridge.

The main common areas of most river cruise ships include the restaurant, the lounge and typically a reading room, library, game room area or sitting area. The restaurant typically accommodates the entire ship in one seating and is a great place to get to know your fellow cruisers and to plan your port time. The lounge is the best place to congregate after a day of spectacular touring, to talk about what you saw and learned, meet other cruisers, mingle, enjoy some wine or cocktails, and listen to live music. There are often games onboard during sailing times and the lounge is typically the epicenter of the activity! Most ships will also have a additional gathering area – library, sitting room, or other – where you can go to get out of your cabin and enjoy some quiet activities.

More and more newer river cruise ships are focusing on the onboard experience and are improving all the time with new options like hair salons, massage rooms, game rooms and alternative dining locations. Onboard Services

Most river cruise lines offer superb onboard service with staff carefully and thoughtfully trained to appropriately deal with any guest issue that may arise. Onboard services likely include an onboard concierge to help you in planning some of the details of your time with the cruise line. They can make sure you have the correct cabin, are set up for the best excursions, and know where to go if you decide to explore a port on your own.

The restaurant staff also offers exceptional service on most river cruise lines taking into consideration guests dietary needs as they cater to your every savory desire throughout your river cruise. Just let your restaurant staff know what you like, don’t like, or can’t eat when you embark.

There are also sometimes other services onboard such as activities directors, massage therapists, hair dressers, and more! Once you board, take the time to meet your crew and learn about the ship and the services they provide. The river cruise industry is competitive and appreciates the level of service many desires when they travel.

While there are very few river cruise lines that make much noise about specific dress codes, there are some guidelines and norms that travelers should be aware of before you start packing for your river cruise vacation.

For most river cruises comfort is key! Although, by focusing your vacation wardrobe on comfort, keep in mind you are traveling with other guests on a small river ship so you will want to look your best, while still being comfortable. Casual vacation wear for the days – especially when touring in different ports – is advisable. Wear comfortable shoes, and depending on location, layer some in order to deal well with temperature differences from cool mornings to warm afternoons.

Evening wear onboard is typically also casual, but usually turned up a notch. This is where you get to don your best wearables and enjoy a nice dinner with your new friends onboard. Most dinner venues on river ships are not formal, but some cruise lines do offer basic requirements like collared shirts for men; long pants are sometimes required over shorts. But just keep in mind that your dinners are a very nice affair onboard, and you should dress for the occasion!

Another good point about dress codes to remember when river cruising is that very often there are religious sites that will be visited while on tour in different ports that require certain dress from men and women. These requirements often include no shorts or short skirts above the knee, no hats for men, no bare shoulders, no open toe shoes, etc. So please be aware of these culturally important dress codes for your river cruise vacation – your River Cruise Artist will let you know of any specific dress requirements on your itinerary.

Currency & Shopping

Prior to embarking on your first or next river cruise vacation, it is a good idea to learn about the local currencies used in the countries you will be visiting. By knowing this, and by planning ahead, you can make sure you have the cash currency needed while on tour. It is a good idea to purchase some local currency prior to departing for your flight – so that you have some cash on hand when you arrive for incidental expenses and gratuities.

While you are onboard your river cruise, you will typically be placing a credit or debit card on file with the front desk upon embarkation, and will be able to charge to that card throughout your time on the ship. This can include the lounge, restaurant for drinks that are not included, room service charges if applicable, and perhaps shopping at the ships store that will typically include some travel essentials, snacks, and local artisan souvenirs.

You may also settle your river cruise tab with cash before you depart if you would like. They will typically accept United States Dollars, European Euros, as well as local currency of the country you are disembarking in.

One tip to remember – gratuities are appreciated and expected with great service. The best way to show your appreciation for your transfer drivers, tour guides, tour bus drivers, and other service industry workers that make your trip more pleasant and successful – is to tip generously. It is best to tip in local currency, so make sure to get change when you are able to and always keep smaller bills for tips as you expect to use them. So often travelers find they use up small bills in local currency and are unable to offer the gratuity they wish to someone that has shown them amazing service.

Additionally, be sure to keep your cash currency in a safe and secure spot on your person or in the safe in your river cruise cabin. There are always those out there that will take advantage of travelers, so take away their opportunity by being careful with not only your cash, but your credit cards as well.

Travelers can select the perfect river cruise itinerary on the perfect river on the best ship, but there is one thing none of us can select – perfect weather for our river cruise vacation! Although bad weather on a vacation is not an optimal situation, if you are prepared, it doesn’t have to ruin your trip completely, either.

Be sure to pack appropriately for potential weather. If you are traveling when temperatures are not standard summer warm, be sure to pack layers so that you can go out on an early morning port excursion when temperatures are lower, and take off jackets and sweaters when the temps rise in the afternoon. The opposite goes for afternoon time, be sure to carry a jacket or sweater with you as night temps may be lower.

Rain gear is a must for pretty much any river cruise – as it is always a potential weather spoiler. Be sure to pack light weight umbrellas, rain jackets or ponchos – or a combination of the three – that you feel comfortable with to be on tour when it is raining. Be sure your shoes that you pack are also good for non-slip walking in the rain. You don’t want to have your nice open toe shoes and find yourself walking through an ancient monument area on dirt or gravel paths.

But rest assured, when you are back on your river cruise ship, the weather can be a disappointment with sight seeing, but you will be fully entertained while on board your ship. Make the best of it – enjoy the fresh smell of a rainy day, the unique appearance of the countryside as you sail through the rain, and the knowledge that rain is life. The key is to be prepared so the weather doesn’t catch you off guard. But we of course hope that your river cruise vacation will be replete with perfect weather!

Accessiblity

Not all river cruise ships are made the same when it comes to accessibility. While most modern vessels sailing the popular rivers of the world by the top river cruise operators, offer accessible ships, cabins and tours, there may be instances where this is not the case. If you are looking for accessible travel options it is best to inform your River Cruise Artist right away so that they can do all the research for you to ensure a seamless and accessible river cruise vacation experience.

Most modern river cruise vessels come with an elevator to easily get from one deck to the other; accessible staterooms or cabins just like accessible hotel rooms; tours that are designed for those with mobility challenges, and a staff dedicated to serving your needs and helping you navigate any accessibility obstacles that may arise.

There are some river cruises on more exotic rivers around the globe that may not be fully suited for mobility challenged travelers. Again, your River Cruise Artist will guide you through the process and help to identify your very best options and arrange any assistance you may need on the river cruise you wish to take.

Smoking is not allowed on most river cruise ships except in very specific and limited locations. River ships are relatively small and this rule is in place to protect the comfort and safety of guests on board. Take a moment to learn the smoking locations and obey the restrictions on board.

Typically, smoking is not allowed in any cabins nor on any balconies. There are sometimes smoking locations outside on the top or near the top deck so that as the ship sails the river, the wind blows the smoke away from the vessel.

River Ship Disembarkation

When that unfortunate time comes to disembark from your amazing river cruise vacation, there are a few things to know that will help you make the adjustment back to land a little easier.

The evening before your river cruise is set to dock for the final time, your crew will give you instructions on their specific process for disembarkation. Usually you will pack your suitcase the night before and leave it outside your cabin door so that the crew can remove all your luggage as soon as the ship docks in the morning.

Be sure to settle your cruise incidentals bill with the front desk prior to disembarking. This could be any additional charges like drinks in the lounge, extra tour options you selected, or perhaps hair or massage services. You will have left a credit card for incidentals on file when you embarked your cruise, and you can settle to that card or to a different card or cash as long as you notify the front desk.

On the morning of disembarkation, make sure you have transfers pre-planned giving you plenty of time to get to the airport for your departure flight or on to the next part of your vacation experience. W hether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy. They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Nature-focused cruise line Lindblad Expeditions has partnered with Food & Wine magazine to offer a new seven-night Columbia & Snake Rivers: Food, Wine and History cruise on multiple dates in April, September and October 2024; there are also sailings in March, April, September and October 2025. The voyages will sail between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington.

Complementing the itinerary will be gourmet Pacific Northwest cuisine and more than 40 regional wines curated by an onboard culinary team. All ingredients will be sourced from within 250 miles of the ship's route. A naturalist, historian and geologist will be on hand to guide you on excursions by foot, kayak, Zodiac and jet boat.

Off-ship experiences include sampling local beer and oysters in Astoria, Oregon; visiting Multnomah Falls or hiking Beacon Rock; and having a private vineyard visit and downtown wine walk in Walla Walla, Washington.

These sailings occur on two identical Lindblad ships: the 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Lion and National Geographic Sea Bird.

American Cruise Line's 15-night Grand Ohio River Cruise
