Having sold millions of records worldwide, Spandau Ballet (from London, UK) remains one of the most recognizable groups from the British New Romantic era of the 1980s, with a popularity that endures to this day.

Originating as a punk band called The Makers back in 1976, school friends Tony Hadley (lead vocals), John Keeble (drums), Steve Norman (saxophone, guitar), Gary Kemp (guitar) and his younger brother Martin Kemp (bass) changed their name to Spandau Ballet in 1979 and embarked upon a career that would see them become one of the most famous pop acts of their generation.

They went on to have ten top-ten singles in the UK, with hits such as ‘Through the Barricades’, ‘True’ (which reached number one), and of course their decade-defining classic, ‘Gold’. Their albums ‘True’, ‘Parade’ and ‘Through the Barricades’ all achieved platinum status in their home country, whilst their earlier works, ‘Journeys to Glory’ and ‘Diamond’ were certified gold. Their sleek sound and devotion to fashion led them (along with their contemporaries Duran Duran, Sade and Ultravox), to be heralded as the pioneers of the New Romantic movement, and during the height of their fame they were asked to perform at Live Aid - the biggest concert the world has ever seen. Throughout the 1980s, they could do no wrong.

Unfortunately, underlying tensions between the band came to a head in 1990 and led to a bitter break-up, and after a failed lawsuit in January 1999 against Gary Kemp by Hadley, Keeble and Norman, relationships between the old friends seemed irretrievably damaged. Instead they would each focus on their solo projects; the Kemp brothers embarked on successful acting careers, Steve Norman began performing with various house music producers in Ibiza, whilst John Keeble played drums for Tony Hadley, who released three solo albums.

However, on the 25th March 2009, the band invited the press on board the HMS Belfast (an old naval cruiser permanently moored next to Tower Bridge, London, UK, and the undeniably cool venue of an early Spandau gig) and officially announced their reunion. The response from their fans was overwhelming - an evening scheduled for the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London, UK, had to be extended into a three-night event after tickets sold out in 20 minutes. These first reunion shows were so well-received that the band was awarded Best Comeback of 2009 in the Virgin Media Awards.

They have since played throughout Australia with New Wave stars Tears for Fears, appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival in June 2010, and plan to play more UK arenas in the future.

Live reviews

I've been a Spandau fan since right back in the early days, but was too young to see them in those crazy days of the early 80s. I was going to see them, for the first time, in late '88 but the gig was postponed & my mum cancelled our tickets - all because of the film The Krays! After the rescheduled gig the band split, and I believed I would never have the opportunity to see them play live. As soon as I heard the boys were touring the UK this year I snapped up a ticket, and with a mixture of nerves & excitement I eagerly counted down the days.

Finally the UK leg of their current tour started last night at Sheffield Arena, and it turned out to be a night of nostalgia & fun which actually fulfilled two desires of mine - not only did we get Spandau on stage, we had Rusty Egan DJ'ing as their support act. It was like a Blitz reunion - but sadly missing the new romantic fashion & style. With a playlist filled with electronic classics, & inspirations, and with a nice little Steel City themed section, Rusty's set had me singing along & getting into the mood.

When Spandau Ballet finally came on stage it was like I was a teenager all over again. Singing the hits & new songs the boys entertained & thrilled us. With a lovely Blitz segment, dedicated to Steve Strange, we took a headlong rush down memory lane & back again. I won't spoil things by giving away too much, but I had guessed something was going to happen yet had no idea how they would pull it off - but Steve & John having a percussion battle did the trick!

Tony's voice is as strong, clear, & beautiful as ever. And although he may not go for all those high notes anymore, he's selective & always keeps in the most important ones - and hits them perfectly. He can still hold a note for a long time too, without all that terrible wobbling current artists seem to do. Steve's sax playing has lost none of its appeal, still providing that sexy, soulful, edge to some of their most well-known hits, and the man is so talented - I'd forgotten just what a variety of instruments he plays! John's drumming never misses a beat, and literally pounded in my chest at times. Combined with Martin's bass you get the heartbeat of the band. Martin seemed to take more of a back seat in things than I'd expected, though always there keeping the music firmly grounded - perhaps I had expectations based on his acting, rather than his musicianship? Gary seems happy with his role in the band, his soaring guitar taking us to places we only visited in memories til last night. Playing acoustic as well last night we were treated to some lovely moments with him & Tony. Sadly I can't remember the name of the keyboardist with them, but he sounded like he belonged, never once was I left feeling that the synths didn't sound right.

But most importantly the guys were clearly having fun & have, finally, been able to put the past behind them & renew old friendships which never should have broken - quite telling was some of the footage from the "Soul Boys of the Western World" which interspersed the show, in which we hear Gary admit that his ego got in the way. It takes a big man to admit something like that. I just hope that now they have that better ending they all wanted. And I hope it doesn't end too soon, as I'd love to see them live again - and soon!

To anyone seeing the boys play this year, have fun & enjoy the ride. To the boys, I have one thing to say: thank you for an amazing night which finally fulfilled a dream of mine

New wave pop rockers Spandau Ballet were a consistent frequenter of the UK airwaves and charts during the 1980s and are considered a pioneering member of the New Romantic movement. Having amassed a loyal following in their heyday, when they announced a reunion in 2009 the original fans were more than happy to fill venues once again to sing along in force to classics such as 'To Cut a Long Story Short'.

However now there are newer fans who will have heard their music at a later date or perhaps been introduced by their parents, they all cheer as one as the lights dim and the band step out proudly. The music sounds as fresh as ever, with each member of the band showcasing their musical capabilities during anthemic opener 'Soul Boy'. The audience is deafening as they are clearly thrilled to be seeing these pop classics performed, Martin Kemp encourages even bigger cheers before launching into 'Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)'. By the double-tag finale of 'True' and 'Gold' the audience leaves the venue with sore throats and happy hearts as everyone continues to quietly chant 'gold, always believe in your soul' all the way home.

Spandeau Ballet's 2009 Reformation Tour in London really delivered to the fans who came to see them at the O2 Arena. Men and women hung on every word of Tony Hadley, lead singer, and on every chord the band skillfully played on their instruments.

The evening was 80s magic, with a raised stage backdrop of a dark sky with thousands of stars, only matched by the thousands of audience members in attendance. Tony Hadley, the star of the show, and ever the British gentleman, wore an impressive three piece suit for the event, like he was on a date to an 80s prom.

The audience was so large that the screen behind the band was perhaps the only way that many concert-goers could get a glimpse of the beloved band. When Hadley sang 'I know this much is true," ladies in the audience could be seen wistfully tilting their heads and waving their arms back and forth with the gentle tune. Virtually everyone lip-synched or sang along with Hadley.Seeing Spandeau Ballet in concert is a worthy event because they are a class act that not only delivers a memorable set, but engages fans to join in on the singing fun to make their night complete.

The show was GREAT! They sounded great and you'd never know it's been 30 some years since they did some of these songs.

Tony sounded great, not like when it's obvious they've aged and it's noticeable in the voice. Not at all! Plus they all looked really good. Like....really good. We looked up all their ages on Wikipedia when we got home to see. None of them look their age, especially Stephen and Martin.

They opened with their new title track and we liked it. I think they played 3, maybe 4 new songs and we liked them all, 2 of them we really liked a lot, so we're getting the cd. Otherwise, they played every hit you could wish for! Really great!

They all seemed like they were having fun and put on a great show! Loved it!

Another high energy performance. Spandau Ballet never disappoint! Very exciting when Tony Hadley and Gary Kemp came into the audience. We were standing very close to them. Loved every minute and didn't want the show to end.

Spandau Ballet were one of my face bands back in the 90s. They were absolutely fab last night at the o2, just as I remember them. Am still buzzing 24 hours later and probably will be for a few days. Highly recommended.

Martin Kemp and brother Gary Kemp have spoken about the chances of a Spandau Ballet reunion, but it still seems unlikely without singer Tony Hadley.

Following Tony Hadley's departure from Spandau Ballet in 2017 , the band briefly carried on with a new frontman, but in recent times have spoken of their hopes for Tony to make a comeback.

However, when Smooth's Jenni Falconer caught up with Tony for our Virtual Coffee Break interview, the singer made it clear that he has no plans to return to the band.

Tony told us: "You know what? I think the whole thing is really sad. I’ve never said it publicly, and I probably never will say exactly why I left.

Tony Hadley quashes Spandau Ballet reunion rumours

"It just got to the point where I couldn’t do it anymore – you know, for whatever reason. It just all went too far.

"As I’ve said, I didn’t resign from a band like Spandau Ballet— because we had two tours together. I thought we were getting on alright, actually. You don’t resign because someone puts sugar in your tea or something, you know, or gave you a goat’s cheese pastry or something! I hate goat’s cheese."

Martin himself later caught up with Jenni , adding that he'd love for Tony to make a return, saying: "I’m always up for it. It’s a really weird thing. Sometimes— it’s about ego a lot of the time. You know, it’s people getting over arguments.

"I would do it tomorrow, because I know how many people want to see it out there. And that gives me a buzz. But trying to get everyone to do it tomorrow is difficult.

Martin Kemp responds to Tony Hadley about Spandau Ballet reunion chances

"But the way things are at the moment – Spandau, you know, we’re very volatile. We’re best friends when we’re together, and we’re not when we’re apart. Trying to get us together is so difficult. Too many things have happened, and too many things have been said over the years that makes it so difficult nowadays."

Now, Martin and Gary are back for an upcoming mockumentary about their lives, titled The Kemps: All True . Filmed like a spoof of the Bros film After the Screaming Stops , the TV special sees them lampoon themselves and their careers.

When asked by Radio Times about the latest Spandau plans, Martin said: “When Spandau were at the peak, there was a lot of pressure on us as brothers that kind of saved the band for years.

"If there was ever a moment where the band might explode, it was left to me and Gary to go off and have the biggest argument – I remember having proper fist fights with him in the 80s – and that got rid of the tension.

Spandau Ballet in 2015

"The next day it would be forgotten about. It wasn’t like Oasis! We were the pressure release valve.”

Gary said: “Will the Spands ride again? If everyone decided to do it, I’d do it. I’m not trying to stop anyone."

He added that he wasn't a big fan of performing with replacement singer Ross William Wild, saying: "We tried to do it with a different singer a year ago – I didn’t enjoy it, I don’t think it works for us all. It’s got to be with Tony singing or not at all.

"Really, like it always has been, the ball’s in Tony’s court. And every bloke in that band knows it’s a great laugh. It’s just that some people take it more seriously than others.”

Meanwhile, Ross William Wild has spoken of how he struggled since Spandau Ballet sacked him as their frontman live on TV.

Gary Kemp talks Tony Hadley’s exit, Spandau Ballet's future: ‘There's still creativity left in this band’

Not long ago, new wave legends Spandau Ballet , who originally disbanded in 1990 and re-formed in 2009, seemed poised for a major comeback. Their performance at South by Southwest 2014 — their first stateside concert in 28 years — was one of the hottest tickets of the Texas festival, where they also premiered their critically acclaimed documentary, Soul Boys of the Western World . The following year, Spandau launched a successful U.S. tour … and after that, fans eagerly awaited new music from these New Romantics.

But then, in July of this year, lead singer Tony Hadley posted a cryptic and seemingly out-of-the-blue message on Twitter, announcing that due to “circumstances beyond his control,” he was no longer a member of Spandau Ballet.

For now, Spandau is forging ahead and promoting their second documentary (this one about their newly remastered 1986 album, Through the Barricade s, with plenty of ironic and now bittersweet scenes about the bandmates’ brotherly bond and willingness to “die for one another.” And this week, the band’s guitarist and principal songwriter, Gary Kemp, speaks exclusively to Yahoo Music about Hadley’s departure and what it means for the future of the group.

“This has been Tony’s stance for the last 20-odd years, where it’s kind of ‘makeup to breakup.’ And there’s only so long you can go in and out of a dysfunctional relationship,” Kemp says. “I actually feel much better now that maybe we don’t have to pretend or worry about it anymore.”

Kemp admits that there has “always been tension” between him and Hadley, and that they “were always poles apart — politically, artistically, socially. We were very, very extremely different people.” Kemp also says Hadley never quite got over an ultimately unsuccessful 1999 lawsuit that he, multi-instrumentalist Steve Norman, and drummer John Keeble filed over Kemp’s songwriting royalties. However, Kemp stresses that around the time of Spandau’s 2014–2015 reunion, he felt a renewed kinship with the frontman. “Coming back together, it felt really good. … It seemed to be running rather smoothly, going well. But I think Tony had a line in the sand, and he didn’t go beyond that. And that was in his head; he didn’t express that to us at the time. We thought we were going to continue.”

Still, Hadley’s exit wasn’t as abrupt as it may have seemed to the band’s fans. “He told us in Hong Kong, on the last show of the tour [in September 2015], that he didn’t want to do it anymore,” Kemp reveals. “He said that he wouldn’t want to do it for another five years, at least — and when you get to our age, that sounds like the rest of your life! And then we had a lot of offers that came in and came in and came in and came in, and he kept saying, ‘No, no, not interested.’ So that, to me, is leaving the band. Tony’s heart was just always much more towards being a solo artist after the last tour, which was frustrating for everybody.”

Kemp looks at the renaissance that Spandau’s friendly ’80s rivals, Duran Duran, have enjoyed over the past few years, and he acknowledges that Spandau could have been in a similar position if they’d been able to take advantage of their post-SXSW momentum. “It’s a shame that Tony didn’t want that, because it was there, and we’d worked quite hard, with the leverage of the film and the tour. So yeah, it’s very frustrating. … We could have been so much more creative as a unit. But if one person doesn’t want to do it, then it makes it much harder.”

Hadley has continued to perform solo, crooning Spandau’s Kemp-penned classics. “It’s fine. Yeah, he’s still singing my songs. I mean, his solo career seems to be singing our songs, so that’s fine,” Kemp chuckles — though he adds that he’s less than thrilled that Hadley appears on so many nostalgia package tours like this summer’s “ Lost ’80s Live ” with Missing Persons, Naked Eyes, Wang Chung, and Berlin. “That’s the one thing that I would never, ever do, is have the name Spandau Ballet attached to any of those ’80s revues. And I suppose it’s my sadness, with Tony doing those.”

So, will Spandau soldier on sans Hadley? “If we find the right guy,” Kemp answers, though he balks at the idea of holding a Rock Star: INXS -style talent contest to find Hadley’s replacement. (The band revealed in a Facebook Live Q&A Tuesday that they are “actively looking” and will be holding rehearsals in “a couple of weeks” to audition new singers.) “We’ve got a process that we’re going through. But that’s all I’m saying. … Watch this space,” says Kemp.

Kemp elaborates: “I think the sound the four of us make together is exciting, and I think that sound has got a lot to do with the band members apart from Tony. … I mean, there’s plenty of groups that are not the original members, and we may well be one of them going forward. I mean, if Queen can do it.! I just saw Journey doing Dodger Stadium with a Filipino kid [Arnel Pineda] singing for them. Foreigner haven’t even got one original member left! So who knows?

“If Tony doesn’t want to do it, I think we can still plug in. I think there could be other versions of the band, and I think there’s also more new material to be had. I’m sitting in my studio now and I’ve been writing lots of stuff of late, and whether or not that ends up with a band called Spandau Ballet or not, I’m not sure. But I think there’s still creativity left in this band. … On the future side, yes, I still would like to be creative under the umbrella of the name Spandau Ballet.”

In the meantime, while fans await the band’s next move, Kemp, his bassist brother Martin, Norman, and Keeble are enthusiastically promoting the reissue of their fifth album, Through the Barricades . A rougher and more arena-rocking effort, partially influenced by their surprising friendship with Def Leppard, the album didn’t make much of dent in the U.S. due to a series of record label misfortunes (and perhaps due to American listeners and radio programmers expecting more smooth blue-eyed soul from the “True”/“Gold” hitmakers) — but it was actually bigger than Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. and Michael Jackson’s Thriller in countries like Italy. And it’s the Spandau era of which the band is most fond.

“It’s definitely the album we’re proudest of; it’s the tour we’re the most proud of. I think the band had matured musically. We were really pushing ourselves in a more complex direction. I think musically and song-wise, it’s the strongest album. If I had to pick one album, it would be this one,” asserts Kemp. “We never came to America on that tour, but that tour was by far Spandau in its pomp. That was us at our best. … When we all got back together in 2009, the one show that we watched back, that we thought we would want to emulate to reinvent ourselves, was the Through the Barricades tour, because it’s by far the band at its best live.”

As for where a glamorous band like Spandau — with or without Tony Hadley — will fit in the current or future pop landscape, Kemp is unsure. “We were lucky enough to make music at a time when music was everything to young people. It was more important than it’s ever been and ever will be,” he says. “That’s stopped now, because identity is found through the internet [instead of through musical movements]. People don’t need to go out anymore to find who they are or express who they are; they can do that through Instagram or Facebook. … So now, for some reason, there’s a kind of dullness factor that people want to champion. Whether it’s Ed Sheeran or Adele or Coldplay, it’s that sense of being ordinary, someone who’s not aspiring, someone who has no kind of pizzazz, if you like. That’s seen as being something worth buying, because I don’t think it’s very threatening. So I don’t think [pop music] will ever be the same again.”

Perhaps that’s why it’s important to Kemp to preserve Spandau’s legacy with projects like the Through the Barricades reissue and with a possible new frontman. “I’ve been the one nurturing the heritage of the band for a long time,” he notes. “I think while I’m still around, we have to take great care of the product and make sure it’s still remembered well. I’m interested in that for myself, regardless of whether or not Tony is interested in it. It’s a shame — I would have liked to have done it with Tony, but he’s an extremely stubborn guy.”

Steve Norman Talks 40th Anniversary Tour Of ‘Journeys To Glory’, Life In Spandau Ballet

Steve Norman Talks 40th Anniversary Tour Of ‘Journeys To Glory’, Life In Spandau Ballet

In this interview, Spandau Ballet’s Steve Norman reveals the many highs – and the odd low – of being in one of the biggest bands of the 80s.

The significance of the hit song True – Spandau Ballet ’s signature track and a bone fide classic – took some time to build. Recorded in sessions at Compass Point, Nassau, The Bahamas, at the end of 1982, it wasn’t even its parent album’s first single. “We put it at the end of the record and didn’t think it was our best track,” Spandau Ballet’s saxophonist and co-founder Steve Norman reveals to Dig! “It was just this ballad… but I do recall a moment in the control room where we were all listening to a tape of the recording and singing along to it.

“It has become my signature now,” he says. “None of us in Spandau Ballet can ever really escape True. Nor would we want to. We used to get a bit bored of it in the mid-80s, but not now. It always uplifts the crowd and I love playing it.”

Listen to the best of Spandau Ballet here .

“i’m coming to it afresh”.

True is certain to get an airing during any Spandau Ballet-related event, including Norman’s upcoming Journeys To Glory Tour, which kicks off on in Wokingham on Friday, 30 September, and will continue through to Monday, 31 October, but the multi-instrumentalist is also using the tour as an opportunity to delve deeper into his back catalogue by celebrating the 40th anniversary of Spandau Ballet’s breakthrough debut album, Journeys To Glory . Accompanied by his five-piece band, The Sleevz, which also features his son Jaco on bass, Norman will play the entire album, including its classic singles To Cut A Long Story Short (Spandau Ballet’s first Top 5 UK hit), The Freeze and Muscle Bound.

“The last time I looked at Journeys To Glory was a few years back and it struck me how weird it is that The Freeze doesn’t follow To Cut A Long Story Short in the running order,” Norman says. “We played both those songs a lot as Spandau Ballet, but no one has performed the whole album like this. I’m coming to it afresh.”

“I was actually a frustrated drummer”

Norman and Spandau Ballet’s principal songwriter, Gary Kemp, met at grammar school. “There are things that draw people together and, in our case, it was guitars,” Norman says today. “We loved music and went to see bands that were playing in many of the great London venues that have been lost over the years.

“We were into all types of stuff – even folk, but that was more Gary’s thing! We were so close back then. I recall laying back on Hampstead Heath [in London], looking at the stars, when we were both a bit worse for wear… we liked our beer. It’s one of our little bonding things we have to this day.”

Norman had always been passionate about music, and his first obsession was Foot Tapper, by Cliff Richard’s backing band, The Shadows. The song became a UK No.1 hit in 1963, when the future Spandau icon was just three years old. “I was actually a frustrated drummer but could never afford the kit,” says Norman. Instead, he picked up a guitar before moving on to his Spandau Ballet trademark: saxophone and percussion.

“We felt we were indestructible and that this was our moment”

Absorbing diverse musical influences along the way, the two schoolfriends formed groups with vocalist Tony Hadley, drummer John Keeble and, eventually, Gary’s younger brother, Martin, before finding the scene they would make their own. “Things move so much faster when you are younger,” Norman recalls. Gary and Steve would hang out together at Soho nightclub Billy’s, before moving on to the Blitz club, which opened in a wine bar on London’s Great Queen Street and became the epicentre of the New Romantic movement . “We had been in a power-pop band and had just found girlfriends, so were on a bit of a hiatus with music,” he notes.

“We were a bit too young for punk – though we had seen the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Buzzcocks on the same bill – but this was different. When we started listening to the stuff that [Blitz DJ] Rusty Egan was playing, it made a huge impact. It was European dance music, and no one else was really playing it back then. It blew our minds.”

It was at the Blitz club, in December 1983, that Spandau Ballet performed their first-ever live gig . “The musicality of our band really then came out,” Norman continues. “We felt we were indestructible and that this was our moment. It was a small movement, but everyone looked like they had just landed from another planet. Out went our wedge haircuts and the peg trousers and in came the skinny jeans.”

“In truth, we were pitching for the Bond theme song”

Things would go further on the fashion front as Spandau Ballet experimented with kilts and make-up, becoming one of the best bands on the New Romantic scene , which was starting to draw national attention. After signing a recording deal with Chrysalis, things moved fast, with the single release of To Cut A Long Story Short landing Spandau Ballet on the BBC’s pivotal Top Of The Pops TV show within months.

Released in the summer of 1981, the band’s fourth single, Chant No.1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On) , went to No.3 – their biggest success to that point – but their second album wouldn’t arrive for another eight months, and momentum seemed to stall. “We were on cloud nine until we got to the Diamond album ,” recalls Norman. “Second albums are always tricky. I was never wholly convinced by [single] Paint Me Down – the track just felt, somehow, a bit flat. There are some brilliant things in it, such as the bass, but it needed a remix.”

A remix was soon to give Spandau Ballet a next boost, after a further single from Diamond , She Loved Like Diamond, failed to crack the Top 40. Sensing a crisis, the group, turned to Trevor Horn to remix Instinction. Horn’s rework of the song got them back into the UK Top 10. “We all knew it was make or break with Instinction. Richard James Burgess [who had produced the band’s first two albums] is a great producer, but Trevor Horn really knew how to do a pop record.”

There had been plans for Horn to produce a full album for Spandau Ballet, but friction between him and drummer Jon Keeble led to a rethink. Instead, the five-piece turned to Bananarama and Imagination pop producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain, and the hits, including Lifeline, Communication and True ’s global smash title track, followed in quick succession. Another highlight was the album’s final single, Gold . “That song has also taken on a life of its own in the years since,” says Norman. “In truth, we were pitching for the Bond theme song when we were recording it.” Now fondly remembered among the best 80s songs , Gold became Spandau Ballet’s second-most successful single at home, and it remains a favourite of music programmers for sporting events around the world.

“I heard it was actually us who were Princess Diana’s favourite band”

The mid-80s was a glorious time for British music, with the rise of MTV providing a platform for the best music videos of the era, which in turn stoked healthy competition among a new generation of stars thrust into pop’s premier league. Spandau Ballet’s main chart rivals, Duran Duran , may have stolen more headlines, but the group secured a significant victory over their Birmingham-based rivals, despite press claims to the contrary. “I heard that it was actually us who were Princess Diana’s favourite band,” says Norman.

Norman and co joined the recording for Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? at end of 1984, a year that had seen the release of Spandau Ballet’s fourth album, Parade . “ Parade was probably our peak, and our success in Italy really took off around then,” Norman says. “The amount of fuss we created there was ridiculous. I think that album has come to be my favourite. I really enjoyed playing the arenas and taking part in events such as Live Aid. My favourite song off Parade is I’ll Fly For You. It’s a special track, with sax all over it. I sing it now at gigs, but it took me ages to approach it and to make sure the sentiment and tonality of the vocals really comes across.”

“I didn’t know what the next step was, and that upset me a lot”

Recording for Spandau Ballet’s next record took place during an extended stay outside the UK. “We only went as far as Ireland because we were really just home boys,” says Norman. “But I fell in love with Dublin and the Irish. It was a real bonding time – we drank a lot of Guinness! I remember we introduced Def Leppard to Spinal Tap. We showed them the film and the five us started to look at each other and went, ‘Oh my God, it’s about them.’ They were great times.”

1986’s Through The Barricades contained another big hit in its title track, but the musical tide was shifting and the album would prove to be the band’s last significant success of the decade. “At the end of the 80s, we had the public turning against us because we weren’t flavour of the month anymore,” says Norman. “When someone shouts at you across the road, ‘Oi, Milli Vanilli!’, that’s tough.”

By Norman’s own admission, Spandau Ballet were “falling apart” during the recording of 1989’s Heart Like A Sky . “We never officially split then – and we haven’t to this day,” he says. “I didn’t know what to do next, so I moved to Ibiza – I love the island and had been there a lot during the 80s. They say you can lose yourself in Ibiza; well, I found myself and stayed there for 12 years.

“I love dance music and spent a lot of time in the clubs,” Norman continues. “I got a record label together and we put out some compilations. We created a production team and I loved that. But I put the sax down when I went to Ibiza because it represented Spandau to me and it broke my heart. At the time, I didn’t know what the next step was, and that upset me a lot.”

“I thought it was going to be the springboard for everything to carry forward”

There were better times ahead, with the original Spandau Ballet line-up reuniting in 2009 for a major tour and another record. “The reunion was one of the best experiences of making an album I’d had,” says Norman. “Gary and I were getting on well and we had written some tunes for other artists. It felt a bit like getting to know each other all over again.”

Norman co-wrote the band’s comeback single, Once More. The decision to rework some of the best Spandau Ballet songs on the album that followed was inspired by listening to Raising Sand , by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. “I loved that album’s darkness,” says Steve. “One of the tracks was in the same key as To Cut A Long Short and so that began to set the template for the direction of the whole record. We were coming up with some really creative stuff. That whole experience was wonderful. I thought it was going to be the springboard for everything to carry forward, but it wasn’t to be.”

Instead, Norman keeps incredibly busy with projects such as 80s Pioneers, a collective, led by Norman, that sees him performing with other artists who broke through in that decade, including Paul Young, Kajagoogoo’s Limahl and Carol Decker from T’Pau. “Life is very good,” Norman says from his home in Brighton, on Britain’s south coast. “I have never felt so creative. I wasn’t always like that before, as I used to feel a little insecure. Life hasn’t always been so kind. But I’m really living it to the full now.”

“Equally, the band validated their ability to rivet and perform with unaffected enthusiasm. Steve Norman’s saxophone playing was the seamless demonstration of this. The man teased that instrument with the force of a demon and the grace of a poet. I, personally, have never witnessed anything quite like it.”
“The secret weapon of Spandau Ballet is Steve Norman who not only played those amazing sax solos you remember from so many Spandau hits, but he also sang back up, played guitar and percussion!.“
“When Steve Norman stepped up front to blow his scripted sax break in “True” the crowd received it with the kind of shouts and applause New Yorkers always gave Clarence Clemons when he took his thundering-tenor spotlight in Madison Square Garden for Bruce Springsteen’s “Jungleland”. The ecstasy in the Albert Hall was that kind of loud.”

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls .
