15 Best Things to Do in Salina (Kansas)

A center for trade at the intersection of the I-70 and I-135 in Central Kansas, the city of Salina is in the middle of one of the largest wheat-growing areas in the world.

Downtown Salina has the dynamism of a big city, with a top-notch history museum, a regional performance venue and award-winning community arts organizations.

The streetscape has also just been renewed, making this a pedestrian-friendly kind of place enriched with a constantly growing display of public art.

There’s never any shortage of things to do in Salina, with a zoo, one of the best public water parks in the country, endless events in the summer and some 30 public parks, including Indian Rock Park which has waterfalls.

1. Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts

A striking Art Deco landmark downtown, the Stiefel Theatre opened in 1931 as the Fox Watson Theatre, and eventually closed down in the 90s.

Soon after, a non-profit group raised close to $3 million to restore the building and turn it into a regional, high-tech performing arts venue that opened in 2003.

The building is a masterpiece from the outside for its ornate terracotta details, while the elegant auditorium, able to seat 1,265, is endowed with the latest sound and lighting equipment.

In the glittering roster of past performers are Al Green, B. B. King, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Cornell and Peter Frampton.

2. Smoky Hill Museum

The Saline County Historical Society was founded in 1879 by the town founders, and built up an awesome collection of 30,000+ artifacts relating to the Smoky Hills Region.

This is the basis for the fantastic Smoky Hill Museum, which moved into the former Post Office building downtown in 1986.

This attraction is loved for its interactive, custom-built special exhibits. These are biannual, and dedicated to a different strand of local history, running alongside the permanent galleries that are constantly refreshed so there’s always something new to check out.

The museum is prominent in local life, staging a popular First Thursday lecture series and taking part in events like the Street Fair on the fourth Saturday in September, with live music and historic demonstrators.

3. Downtown Salina

In the last decade Salina’s historic commercial district has come through a series of public and privately funded makeovers.

Most recently, the transformation to the streetscape along Santa Fe Avenue has been staggering, with widened sidewalks, imposing gateways, new lighting and beds with flowers and native grasses.

These projects have coincided with a lot of construction, furnishing Salina with a Hilton hotel, family entertainment center (more later) and the Salina Fieldhouse, a state-of-the-art sports facility.

Amid all this development, the historic center of the city, noted for its terracotta facades, has held onto its unique character.

4. Salina Community Theatre

Salina has a national award-winning community theater company that was founded way back in 1960.

Within a decade the Salina Community Theatre had begun to raise funds for its own purpose-built facility, and this opened its doors in 1973.

This continues to be a non-profit organization, putting on wide-ranging, professional standard productions to enrich the cultural experience of people in Salina and the surrounding region.

Recent seasons have featured shows like the Music Man, Sunday in the Park with George, Beauty and the Beast, Annie, Brighton Beach Memoirs and Mamma Mia.

5. SculptureTour Salina

Salina has a creative way of enticing people to visit the historic downtown area. For more than a decade there has been an annual exhibition of up to 25 works of contemporary sculpture that you can check out on a self-guided tour.

These pieces are all carefully selected and positioned, and as part of the tour you can vote for your favorite.

The sculpture with the most votes will be purchased by the City of Salina, while others in the exhibition are also for sale. To date, over 40 sculptures have been sold.

The season begins with the UnWrap Party in May, when the works are unveiled with live music and entertainment.

6. Indian Rock Park

Arguably the most scenic spot in Salina, Indian Rock is on a dramatic stretch of the Smoky Hill River.

Here the river flows between bluffs rising to 30 feet, and you can scramble up to some spectacular viewpoints along the trails.

There’s a pair of waterfalls on the river, with relatively small drops, although the lower falls have an impressive horseshoe shape.

Indian Rock Park is also imbued with compelling history as the site of the Battle of Indian Rock (1857), which was the last significant confrontation between the Kansa, Delaware and Potawatomi Indian nations.

7. Oakdale Park

Entered via a ceremonious gateway on Oakdale Dr, this park has a history going back to the early 1880s.

This is a very pretty place for a walk or picnic, with pathways next to formal gardens with shrubs, flowerbeds, and with ample cover provided by tall old hardwood trees.

Oakdale Park is the refined backdrop for the Smoky Hill River Festival in early June, and there’s also plenty going on around the Fourth of July.

There’s a performance stage for these events, while other facilities include a fishing pond, ADA playground, tennis courts, five rental shelters and five first come-first served shelters.

8. Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park

After a $15 million investment to replace the 52-year-old city pool, Salina now has one of the largest and best municipal water parks in the country.

This facility is designed to offer something for swimmers of all abilities and ages. An incomplete list of attractions includes a variety of water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, a lap pool, a leisure pool with zero-depth entry and extensive kiddie pool areas.

On top of all that there are also spray & play fountains, interactive water play features, a water obstacle course, water basketball, all complemented by ample shade and rental cabanas.

9. Rolling Hills Zoo

This acclaimed attraction is just off the I-70 a few minutes west of Salina, and combines a traditional zoo with a wildlife museum.

Among the 100+ species at Rolling Hills Zoo are big cats like Amur tigers, African lions and snow leopards, as well as rhinoceroses, kangaroos, lemurs, tamarins, ostriches, chimpanzees and a wide variety of reptiles, from pythons to quince monitors.

The museum showcases one of the world’s largest displays of full mount animals, with some 500 mounts from 200 different species from six different continents.

These are shown in highly detailed exhibits, populated by animatronic human robots adding extra context.

10. Salina Art Center

Another cornerstone of Salina’s cultural scene is this multidisciplinary art center downtown.

The center’s wonderful, community-oriented programming includes exhibitions by regional and national artists, independent film screenings and a comprehensive array of educational programs from private lessons to open studios.

Among the recurring exhibitions there’s the Salina Biennial (springtime in even years) and the Sunflower Biennial (springtime in odd years).

The center has three different locations: Galleries (242 South Santa Fe), Cinema (150 South Santa Fe) and The Warehouse (149 South 4th).

11. Yesteryear Museum

Out in the countryside north of Salina, this agricultural museum was set up in 1980 to “Acquire, Preserve and Restore” farming machinery and tools specific to the Great Plains region.

Awaiting you at the Yesteryear Museum is an absorbing inventory of steam engines, tractors and other implements, as well as appliances and everyday objects from a different time.

A real highlight is a vintage OMC tractor, developed and manufactured here in Salina. The museum also preserves a sawmill from 1860, a gas station from the 1930s, a Methodist church dating to 1901 and a one-room schoolhouse from 1927.

12. Lakewood Park

A couple of blocks north of Indian Rock Park is another inviting public space, set on a former sandpit. Several trails meander through Lakewood Park, for a restorative walk in woodland, prairie and past a lake in the north of the park.

The wooded habitats are home to white-tailed deer, raccoons and fox squirrels, while nest boxes have been constructed for passerine birds, screech owls and bats.

For more background on Lakewood Park’s ecosystems you can visit the Discovery Center, which has interesting interpretive displays and live animals including turtles, owls, snakes and several native freshwater fish species.

13. The Alley

Just a block or two east of the City – County Building you’ll find this giant new family entertainment center, with a range of attractions under one roof.

The big draw is of course the bowling alley, with 28 lanes, as well as an additional eight lanes at the Back Alley bowling lounge.

In addition there’s a laser tag arena, open to anyone over the age of 6, as well as a cutting-edge VR game, an arcade with new game cabinets and redemption machines and a sports bar/grill famed for its 29″ Superdome Pizza.

14. Ad Astra Books & Coffee

A downtown mainstay for more than a decade, Ad Astra Books & Coffee combines a bookstore with a coffee house, but is much more than just a comfy place to read and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

For one thing, you can pick up vinyl, comics and handmade gifts. And there’s a calendar packed with events, from talks to author readings to film screenings, children’s theater spoken word and live music performances.

The upshot is a kind of intimate cultural center, with programming designed to reach as large an audience as possible.

15. Smoky Hill River Festival

One event not to be missed in Salina is this four-day music festival, presenting an amazing diversity of performers and style.

These range from classical to jazz, country, blues, fusion and reggae, across four different stages. On a typical year the Smoky Hill River Festival has more than 150 performers and has a small army of 2,500 volunteers to help everything go smoothly.

Beyond that, there are roving, pop-up performances throughout the event, as well as an art & craft show with more than 130 artists from across the country, and delicious food choices from more than 30 vendors.

At the intersection of Interstates 70 and 135, Salina is the crossroads of Kansas. Any Kansas road trip should include the beautiful city of Salina, just over an hour north of Wichita . As the crossroads of the state, Salina offers numerous cultural and recreational activities along with excellent shopping and dining.

You’ll want to stay at least one night in Salina; reserve a room at one of the city’s numerous lodgings or camp at Salina KOA Holiday .

Here are 12 great things to do when you’re in town.

1. Explore SculptureTour Salina

Many of the city’s amenities are clustered in Salina Downtown . For an excellent orientation, explore SculptureTour Salina . Each year, sculptors install between 15 and 25 sculptures in Downtown Salina. Silver boxes on the sculpture pedestals hold ballots. You can also pick up ballots at downtown businesses. At the end of the exhibition season, the city of Salina buys the winning sculpture. Anyone interested may also purchase sculptures. We always look forward to seeing the new sculptures.

Pro Tip: The SculptureTour makes a great stop on an Interstate 70 road trip through Kansas.

2. Attend A Performance At The Stiefel Theatre For The Performing Arts

The Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts fits in well with the sculptures, because the theater is an art deco gem. The venue opened in 1931 as the Fox-Watson Theater. The $400,000 building featured lavish art deco chandeliers, an elaborate staircase, and opulent gold leaf. 

All that glamour needed rescue when the theater closed in 1987. Two years later, its owners donated it to the city. The city installed a new roof and then mothballed the structure until 1997. Eventually, the city gave the theater to a nonprofit group for renovation. In 2003, the restored former cinema reopened as a live performance venue. 

Because of Salina’s crossroads location, the theater has welcomed top names like George Carlin, Darius Rucker, Lindsey Buckingham, Peter Frampton, Bonnie Raitt, and Emmylou Harris.

Pro Tip : The venue lost its spire in a 1954 storm. In November of 2020, a crane lifted a new spire into place. The spire turned the building into a fun reminder of Ghostbusters ’ Shandor Building . Don’t be afraid of ghosts; enjoy the spire’s lights in the evening. 

3. Watch An Indie Movie At The Salina Art Cinema

Step into an alternative vision at the Salina Art Cinema . Across the street from the Stiefel, the cinema shows first-run independent, documentary, and international films at its 92-seat venue. During the free Science on Screen events, the cinema pairs a movie screening with an expert-led discussion of scientific topics in the movie. 

4. Buy Artists’ Creations At The Salina Art Center

The Salina Art Cinema is a division of the Salina Art Center . At the art center, stroll through the galleries to enjoy the rotating exhibits. Many of the works of art are for sale. Add a little mystery to your life and buy some artwork from the Art-O-Mat machine. Purchase a $5 token from the art center and drop it into the machine. A tiny work of art will come out. Embrace the mystery, because you won’t know exactly how it will look.

5. Experience The Crossroads At The Smoky Hill Museum

The Smoky Hill Museum moved into the 1931 art deco post office in 1985. On your way up the front steps, note the high-relief sculptures on each side. Inside, you’ll walk through the arch that says Salina, Your Opportunity . The sign originally greeted railroad passengers. After you finish exploring the museum, you’ll see what makes Salina a great opportunity to visit.

The museum’s exhibits rotate every six months, and the staff members change the permanent exhibits’ artifacts frequently as well. Come to the lecture series on first Thursdays, but arrive early to obtain a seat. On the fourth Saturday in September, you can attend the museum’s street fair, featuring live music, historic demonstrations, and more. 

Pro Tip : Look for the WalkSalina and When Houses Became Homes logos outside the museum. Scan the QR code to access walking tours of the downtown area. Take the Gypsum Hill Cemetery walking tour to hear stories of early Salina. Henry David Lee, who founded Lee Jeans, is buried there. The city of Salina also has a trail system. Download a map here .

6. Talk To The Animals At The Rolling Hills Zoo

The Rolling Hills Zoo includes two parts, the zoo and a wildlife museum. This is not your father’s zoo, where the animals are penned in cages. They live in beautiful, naturalistic habitats. The critically endangered cotton-top tamarins all sport different hairdos, while the Amur leopards display spectacular fur coats. During monarch butterfly migration season, watch for them in the zoo’s butterfly garden. Throw in tentacled snakes, Gila monsters, and giant hissing cockroaches for a memorable visit.

In the 64,000-square-foot museum, animatronic “humans” within displays narrate stories about their environment in climates from the Arctic to the tropics. In the education gallery, you’ll find several hands-on activities. 

Pro Tip : Explore the zoo when the temperatures invite the animals to be outside. When the weather is too hot or cold for the animals, visit the wildlife museum. Reserve times online. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent. You can ride the tram on summer weekends. Free air-conditioned kennels are available for pets.

7. Stretch Your Muscles At The Alley And The Salina Fieldhouse

If you still need exercise after exploring the zoo, visit The Alley and The Salina Fieldhouse downtown. The Alley offers bowling, laser tag, virtual reality, and arcade games. The Fieldhouse offers space for every kind of team game, including basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, and football. The Fieldhouse also allows walkers.

8. Watch Hard-Hitting Action At The Tony’s Pizza Events Center

The 6,500-seat Tony’s Pizza Events Center is home to two full-contact sports, Salina Sirens roller derby and Salina Liberty indoor football. 

The Liberty won their regular season conference title in 2018 and 2019. They also won the conference championship in 2019 before losing the Champions Bowl. Indoor football is a fast-paced game played in a much smaller area than traditional football. If you sit in the front rows, be aware that players may crash over the barriers.

The Sirens belong to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association . Roller derby bouts comprise two 30-minute halves, which are divided into three 2-minute jams. Each team’s jammer tries to score as many points as she can by passing blockers. The blockers impede the opposition’s jammers.

9. Fill Your Garden At Stutzmans

Stutzmans Greenhouse sits in the open air under a canopy. All kinds of plants are available for purchase, including unique vegetables. You need look no further than Stutzmans for your plantings. Whimsical outdoor decor items will complete your yard. Have a question? Ask the knowledgeable staff.

10. Show Off Your Salina Visit

Salina Downtown is very walkable, with many boutique shops. Curl up with a book, coffee, and a bagel and lox at Ad Astra Books & Coffee House . Show everyone that you’re visiting Salina: Take a picture with the 67401 mural on the building’s north side. Use the hashtag #6740wonderful .

11. Shop Salina Downtown

We recommend Auld Lang Syne for antiques. You can’t miss their beautiful sign, which looks like it came from a grandfather clock. Flipping Fabulous flips rundown into refurbished. Look for the Champion sign to find Quilting Station . Find your perfect fit with multigenerational clothing at Sanity Boutique .

12. Dine With Delight In Salina

Salina offers some of the state’s best food within an easy walk. The Cozy Inn is one of our favorite Midwest hole-in-the-wall diners . Buy a bag of burgers and eat them in The Cozy’s picnic area. Then rub your hands with salt to remove the scent of onion-drenched hamburgers. 

Savor a wood-fired Rosie’s Special Pizza at Blue Skye Brewery and Eats . It features cream cheese, homemade pork chili verde, a mix of black beans and corn, and house blend cheese, all topped with red peppers. Yum, yum! Enjoy their Fire Engine Red or Crank Case IPA.

Martinelli’s Little Italy is a Salina institution, the place we gather after meetings in Salina. We recommend the lasagna and the beef ravioli followed by tiramisu or the Molten Vesuvio chocolate cake.

Pro Tip: To sound like a local, pronounce the city’s name Sah-LINE-ah, even though it’s the seat of Sah-LEEN County on the Sah-LEEN River.

Salina, Kansas, is a charming city at the crossroads of America, where Interstate 70 and Interstate 135 meet. Salina is an ideal destination because of its rich history, vibrant culture, and friendly locals. It’s just under 50,000 in population, so visitors enjoy big-city amenities with small-town warmth and friendliness.

If you haven’t visited Salina lately, you must return. Salina now is far different than it was in the 1980s and 1990s. Salina Downtown is vibrant, full of shops and eateries. The best places have remained, and new friends have arrived. Downtown is highly walkable and is dotted with intriguing sculptures. Murals also enliven the streetscape. It’s become one of my favorite places to shop.

1. Get wild at the Rolling Hills Zoo west of Salina

Walk on the wild side at Rolling Hills Zoo . More than 100 species await your visit at the award-winning zoo 15 minutes west of Salina. The zoo categorizes its species under big cats, primates, other mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and animals in Kids’ Country.

I love the giraffes with their customized spots and their purple tongues. Billie and Zuri are the adults, while Korey is a young giraffe. They were inquisitive, coming to look at the two-legged visitor. Giraffes rarely drink; they obtain liquid through the plants they eat. Bending their long neck over the water renders the giraffe vulnerable to predation.

And some predators are nearby in the zoo’s new Pride of the Prairie exhibit, which opened in August 2022. The zoo used the Kansas prairie to emulate African lions’ natural savanna habitat. The remodeled exhibit doubled the lions’ existing space, which now includes a massive visitors’ cave. Lions like to observe their domains from above, and their new Salina home includes a high “cliff” that enables them to survey their surroundings.

In the cave, three windows enable visitors to view the lions and watch as the zookeepers care for them. Rolling Hills Zoo teaches its animals to cooperate in their care. For example, the keepers train the lions to show their paws. The keepers can inspect them for any damage, like from a thorn.

Roxie’s reliable recommendation : Ride the sprawling zoo’s tram, and visit during cooler hours because the animals are smart and avoid the heat.

Experience the world of wildlife at the wildlife museum

The Rolling Hills Museum is full of astounding dioramas. Alfred, Lord Tennyson famously wrote that nature is red in tooth and claw. The museum illustrates Tennyson’s point. In one diorama, a lioness takes down a buffalo while the buffalo gores a lion. Another displays a fight between zebras and hyenas. However, not all of them are gruesome. A herd of yaks stands in grasses before a mountain range, and polar bears stand guard on icebergs. Animatronic figures include a snake charmer and an Inuit hunting party.

2. Visit the Smoky Hill Museum in Salina Downtown

A huge patchwork metal hippo greets guests outside the Smoky Hill Museum . The Art Deco gem was once the Salina post office. Inside, learn about Salina’s history as the nation’s crossroads. For a time, Salina’s entrance had a wrought iron arch decked with a lighted sign, “Salina Your Opportunity Welcome.” The sign now adorns the entrance to the museum’s galleries.

For 12,000 years, abundant game and fertile soil have attracted people to the area. In 1858, Salina’s founders established the city as a free-state colony of Lawrence. They named it for the Saline River, which enters the Smoky Hill River east of the city. The city grew slowly until the Union Pacific arrived in 1867. A flood nearly destroyed Salina in 1903, but the citizens rebuilt the resilient city.

The museum explains Salina’s signature stories. During wheat harvest, remember that explorer Stephen Long called the Great Plains the Great American Desert. Did you know that abundant wheat made Salina the nation’s fourth-largest flour producer? I didn’t. Unfortunately, the flour mills are now gone. 

Schilling Air Force Base came to Salina in 1942 as a staging area for heavy bombers. The base remained as a Salina mainstay until its 1967 closure. The military’s departure was a heavy blow to Salina’s economy, but the base became the Salina Regional Airport and Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus. An exhibit explains the story.

However, my favorite exhibit allowed me to pretend to be a radio announcer. What fun!

3. Check out the in-spire-ing Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts

The Stiefel Theatre ’s 45-event season annually attracts 40,000 patrons to downtown Salina for cultural events. They hear headliners like Chicago, Pam Tillis, Melissa Etheridge (who is from Leavenworth), Josh Turner, Peter Frampton, Bonnie Raitt, Three Dog Night, Trombone Shorty, and Emmylou Harris. However, not every act has a national reputation. The theatre staff desires to broaden its patrons’ musical experiences. Because of that, the staff books diverse acts and genres. 

Local musicians also perform live music at the Steifel, including the Salina Symphony.

The venue opened in 1931 as the Fox-Watson Theater. The lavish Art Deco chandeliers, an elaborate staircase, opulent gold leaf, and other details pushed the movie palace’s construction costs to $400,000. That’s nearly $8 million in 2022 dollars. A four-story tower, 78 feet high, dominated downtown Salina’s skyline. Lightning damaged the tower in 1954, and the owners removed its top tiers. 

The theatre closed in 1987, and the City of Salina bought it two years later. The City replaced its roof and shuttered the building.

Norm and Kristy Yenkey spearheaded fundraising for the historic theatre’s renovation. It gained the Stiefel name after Milton Stiefel made a large contribution. It reopened on March 8, 2003.

In 2023, 69 years after the tower’s demise, the foundation replaced it.

The theatre opens an hour before performances begin.

4. Expose yourself to art at the Salina Art Center

The Salina Art Center continually rotates its exhibitions in its 3,300-square-foot gallery space. The museum selects regional to international contemporary artists across all visual media.

Start collecting contemporary art from the Art-O-Mat , a repurposed cigarette vending machine.

5. Watch movies at Salina Art Cinema

The single-screen arthouse cinema runs a show nightly. The 2023 renovation installed state-of-the-art projection and live-streaming equipment.

6. Observe local talent at Salina Community Theatre

Theatre Salina puts on multiple productions each season. The Center for Theatre Arts trains people of all ages in acting, dancing, and signing. Many CTA alumni have enjoyed theatre-related careers.

7. Vote for your favorite SculptureTour Salina artwork

Every year, SculptureTour Salina rotates sculptures through downtown Salina. The Salina Arts & Humanities Commission holds an UNwrap Party each May, but voters may choose their favorite through December 31. Fill out the ballots in the silver boxes at the mid-block crosswalks on Santa Fe Avenue. Return the completed ballot to a downtown business or deposit them into the boxes. The City of Salina buys the People’s Choice Award winner for its permanent collection.

8. Gaze at Salina’s murals

The downtown area is full of murals, but one mural dominates them. The Mural at the Mill shows children dancing around the old H.D. Lee Flour Mill on Santa Fe Ave. Australian artist Guido van Helton painted the mural in 2021.

9. Join the party at First Friday Live

Every first Friday of the month, Salina Downtown comes alive with music on the City Lights Stage . Join the party.

10. Take a spin at The Garage Automotive Museum

The Garage is Salina’s newest museum. It has two parts: the Crossroads Car Experience and the Kustom Kemps Museum and Hall of Fame. Pour a brew at the in-house tap and drink while you ogle the cars.

The car experience includes pristine classic cars. The Kustom Kemps side displays top-notch car customizers’ work. (A “kemp” was 1950s teen slang for a customized car.) You’ll enjoy the space between each car, enabling you to examine them closely. Close your eyes and picture yourself behind the wheel.

Exhibits change quarterly, so come often. Sometimes vintage cars parade past the museum on Iron on Thursday nights.

Roxie’s reliable report : Director Joshua Logan shot the first scenes of his classic movie Picnic in Salina . The movie adapted William Inge’s book of the same name. Inge was from Independence. The crew filmed the railroad scenes at 275 E. Iron Avenue, north of The Garage. A house at 417 E. Country Club was a mansion in the film.

11. Build a team at Salina Fieldhouse

The 68,500-square-foot Salina Fieldhouse is one of the state’s premier sports facilities. Hardwood and synthetic courts and turf fields provide numerous sports opportunities, including volleyball, basketball, futsal, pickleball, soccer, and football. Drop-down batting cages and pitching tunnels are also available.

A large lobby and concession area, plus ample parking, allow room for large competitions.

​12. Say, “Tag, you’re It,” at The Alley

The Alley is next to the fieldhouse. If the fieldhouse’s sports menu doesn’t fit you, The Alley’s will. Bowl, play laser tag, defeat aliens in the arcade, or step into the hologate.

Play a game of pool and savor a Perfect 300 Pizza at The Original AJ’s Sports Grill .

13. Root for the Salina Liberty at Tony’s Pizza Events Center

To spectate instead of participate, root for the Salina Liberty indoor football team at Tony’s Pizza Events Center . The team won the Champions Indoor Football title in 2022 after finishing second in 2021 and 2019. The venue also holds events like circuses, monster trucks, concerts, and fairs.

14. Join the party at the Smoky Hill River Festival

Salina’s Oakdale Park provides a botanical garden, tennis courts, and fishing, but it’s busiest during the annual Smoky Hill River Festival in early June. The festival’s website counts up to three stages, 151 artists, 158 performances, and 35 food vendors. With all that variety, you will enjoy a good time.

More than 40 musical groups from all genres will entertain you; not all are on stage. Some stroll through the crowds. Meet artists from across the country. Discuss their work with them and bring some home. Accompany your children to Artyopolis for hands-on activities.

The Smoky Hill River Run opens the festival on Saturday morning at Kenwood Park. Line up for the five-mile and two-mile runs, a two-mile walk, and t the children’s races. After the races, cool off at Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park . The largest pool in the region features slides, waves, thrill rides, and regular swimming.

15. Shop Downtown

Beautiful Salina Downtown has unique shops, wide streets, and murals. It’s the perfect mix of culture, eateries, and shopping. The last time we visited Salina, we were en route to my cousin’s wedding. We found the perfect gift displayed at Penny Layne . We wondered how we would wrap it, and then we noticed that the staff had already gift-wrapped the items not on display. Kudos for their thoughtfulness.

My most-complimented necklaces came from PB&J next door.

As a tall, plus-size woman, I appreciate True Betty Boutique ‘s selection of flattering clothing from sizes small to 3X.

Red Fern Booksellers is across the street in the next block south. Browse the titles and their games, puzzles, and stationery. There’s nothing like curling up with a good book.

16. Shop at Central Mall

At Central Mall , buy the latest craft supplies at JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores, and step out in clothes from Old Navy, Maurices, The Buckle, Famous Footwear, and TradeHome Shoes. Obtain a manipedi at Fashion Nails, then relax at Oriental Massage and AMC Theaters.

17. Eat at Salina’s signature restaurants

No trip to Salina is complete without meals at Martinelli’s Little Italy, Cozy Inn, Dagney’s Ice Cream, and Blue Skye Brewery.

Martinelli’s Little Italy

I hope that lasagna soup is on the menu when I visit Martinelli’s, but if it isn’t, I order the lasagna instead. No cottage cheese hides in Martinelli’s lasagna. Instead, it’s bursting with savory tomato sauce, meat, ricotta cheese, noodles, and delicious herbs and spices.

The cozy restaurant’s classic décor invites you in and wraps you with love.

The Cozy Inn

The Cozy Inn has served the same menu since its inception in 1922. Bob Kinkel stole the concept from Wichita’s White Castle. Eventually, White Castle left Kansas, and Kinkel was left holding a bag of Cozy Burgers. The original six-stool bar is one of the few remaining in the United States.

People buy the sliders topped with a dollop of onion by the bag. Unless you enjoy the scent of onions, don’t eat them in your car. The aroma takes time to dissipate. Eat them inside or at one of the nearby picnic tables.

Blue Sky Brewery & Eats

Enjoy a wood-fired pizza at Blue Skye Brewery & Eats . Choose the cauliflower crust for a gluten-free option. Pair the pizza with a crabapple ale featuring apple and vanilla notes.

Dagney’s Ice Cream

Complete your meal with a delicious sweet treat from Dagney’s Ice Cream . The treats are made in-house with fresh ingredients. Dagney and Ken Stromberg researched ice cream for two years before opening their shop. They took a class in Florida from their equipment manufacturer, then tweaked recipes at home until they were satisfied. We recommend the lemon custard and red raspberry flavors. Come in frequently because the shop rotates flavors.

18. Close the day with a sunset at Indian Rock Park

Indian Rock Park provides nature trails, a sledding hill, picnic shelters, and grills. Bring a picnic in the evening and watch the sunset behind Salina’s skyline. The loop trail is about a mile long with several overlooks. Look for a waterfall on the river. Leashed dogs are welcome. The terrain is varied and washed out at some points.

The Battle of Indian Rock set Salina’s future. The eastern indigenous peoples drove away the western ones at the 1857 battle after taking shelter under Indian Rock. The shattered western warriors never returned.

Col. William Phillips heard about the battle and established Salina with his friends A.M. Campbell and James Muir. Without the battle, the three likely would have settled near Manhattan. The 1859 Colorado gold rush ensured Salina’s future as a trading center.

19. Sleep the night away

Salina has all the top chains’ hotels , but I like to stay at the Hampton Inn . It’s a clean, cheerful hotel with good complimentary breakfasts. Camp at Salina KOA Holiday .

Enjoy your stay in Salina. It’s the right place for solo travelers, couples, and families. Salina has the perfect blend of big-city amenities with small-town ambiance. You’re going to love it.

After two name changes, K-State is putting 'Salina' back in the name of Salina campus

The Kansas State University campus in Salina is changing its name for the third time in the past decade, returning to using the city's name in the school's name.

Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday signed Senate Bill 481 , which renames Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus as Kansas State University Salina. The bill was introduced by Sen. J.R. Claeys, R-Salina, with the support of K-State Salina dean Alysia Starkey.

Starkey told the House Higher Education Budget Committee earlier in March that the name change will "align with how the rest of the university multicampus system structure works."

In addition to the name change, the new law also adjusts some statutory language to align the internal budget processes while also allowing insurance coverage for drone programs. That statutes had been in place for three decades.

"The budgetary process has needed some revision for a couple of years now," Starkey said.

Before the Salina campus merged with K-State in 1991, it was a two-year technical school called the Kansas College of Technology. K-State Salina is best known for its aviation and drone programs.

The name was changed from Kansas State University Salina in 2015, when it became Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus.

"A polytechnic identity not only provides a much-needed niche for Kansas State University in the immediate region, but also aligns with our teaching and research mission," Kirk Schulz, the then-president of Kansas State University president, said at the time . "The career-based learning and hands-on research at our polytechnic campus will play a vital role as we strive to become a Top 50 public research university by 2025."

Then in 2021, it rebranded to be Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus.

Now, the old name is back.

"It was originally K-State Salina," said Rep. Clarke Sanders, R-Salina. "Why was it ever changed in the first place?"

"The president at that particular time of Kansas State University had a particular vision and experience with some polytechnic institutions," Starkey said. "Polytechnics are really prevalent on the East and the West coasts, and so he kind of had a vision for the campus to go in that particular direction.

"It really does not sit well in the Midwest. The polytechnic references are confusing, and this particular change realigns us with how the university operates in its system, but it also helps us streamline the mission and make clear the mission and the vision of the campus."

Starkey said a survey of students, alumni, industry partners and other stakeholders found that more than 87% supported restoring the old name.

"Most people still refer to it as Salina," Starkey said. "Not a lot of people understood the polytechnic, and I don't think it ever caught on."

Norma Jean Hahn, known to everyone as "Jean" as born to Faye and Harry Jungel on the family farm near New Cambria, KS on October 7, 1932. She grew up milking cows and doing field work with her two sisters, Helen and Betty, and her younger brothers, Marvin and Keith. Jean and her sisters enjoyed hunting and fishing with their dad. The three girls excelled playing in fast pitch softball leagues in the summers.

After graduating from Solomon High School, Jean moved to Abilene, KS here she worked as a telephone operator for 7 years. Jean met Leon in 1953 on a blind date set up by Leon's sister, Ivalene. They were married Nov. 20, 1954. Jean and Leon lived in Gypsum until 1957 and then moved to the farm in rural Dickinson County, where they raised their family and worked side-by-side for the next 69 years.

Jean helped raise chickens, pigs, and cattle with Leon, as well as farming increasing acreage over their decades of working together. Her artistic talents included painting, embroidery and quilting. She also sang in the Gypsum United Methodist Church Choir for many years. Jean was a trusted school bus driver for the Southeast of Saline School District for 9 years, retiring once Leon was ready to travel the world. Their travels took them to all 50 states, as well as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, and Mexico.

Jean an Leon joined the Jolly Mixer's Dance Club in Salina and were faithful dancers for 34 years, until Jean's health precluded further dancing 4 years ago. The multitude of friendships and memories that evolved from the Jolly Mixer's had a lasting impact on Jean's retirement years.

Jean is survived by Leon, her husband of 69 years; daughter, Carol Shearer (John); daughter, Karla Demby (Brian); and son, Randy Hahn (Lori); eight grandchildren, Clayton Shearer (Maggie); Mitchell Shearer, Ryan Hahn (Hannah); Jason Hahn (Rachel); Stephen Hahn, Max Demby (Courtney); Rachel Demby and Nicole Demby; and 5 great grandchildren, Addyson and Coralie Shearer, Conley and Easton Hahn, and Blain Hahn. She has one brother, Keith Jungel.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024 at the Gypsum Community Church, Gypsum, KS. Burial will be in the Gypsum City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina, KS.

Kansas State basketball loses a third player to transfer portal in center Jerrell Colbert

MANHATTAN — Kansas State's basketball team has lost another starter to the transfer portal.

Center Jerrell Colbert, one of the first players to sign with new coach Jerome Tang in the spring of 2022, becomes the third Wildcat and second starter to leave the team since the season ended March 19. He played sparingly the year before as a freshman at LSU.

K-State now has five scholarships available for next year barring any further departures.

Colbert, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound sophomore who redshirted in 2022-23 after transferring from LSU, saw his role increase as this past season wore on, stepping into the starting lineup for the last 13 games. He averaged 2.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game.

Colbert is the latest Wildcat to enter the portal, following guards Cam Carter and Dorian Finister. Carter, a two-year starter and the team's second-leading scorer, announced last week that he is enrolling at LSU.

With the departure of Colbert, whose biggest game was a 15-point, seven-rebound performance at Cincinnati, the Wildcats need to add some size for next season. Graduate Will McNair, who averaged 8.0 and 5.4 rebounds as the starter before Colbert took his place, is out of eligibility.

K-State entertained former Michigan forward Tarris Reed, a 6-10, 265-pound sophomore, on a recruiting visit over the weekend. Reed, a St. Louis native who averaged 9.0 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Wolverines, was coached by current Wildcat assistant Rodney Perry in high school at Link Academy in Missouri.

Dug McDaniel, Reed's teammate at Michigan, took a campus visit to K-State on Monday. McDaniel, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Washington, D.C., averaged 16.3 points and a team-best 4.7 assists this past season for the Wolverines.
