VW Steps In and Saves Europe's Legendary Worthersee Car Gathering

If you like the VW GTI, you'd love Wörthersee, where up to 200,000 enthusiasts have come to admire GTIs and other great cars since the 1980s.

• Held since 1982, the annual Wörthersee GTI Treffen saw crowds as large as 200,000 at its peak.
• VW has officially sponsored the Treffen since 2000 and has now promised to continue the tradition at its headquarters in Wolfsburg.

If you are a fan of the Volkswagen GTI in any of its generations, then heaven is a place in Germany. Specifically, the bucket-list trip of any VW hot hatch aficionado is a visit to the near-legendary GTI Treffen, held on the shores of Lake Wörth since 1982. At its peak, hundreds of thousands of GTI and Golf R fans thronged here, snapping photos of wildly customized Golfs and eating far too much Volkswagen currywurst (VW part number 199398500A). However, as might be expected, the locals have grown somewhat weary of the spectacle.

In a statement that nodded to the economic prosperity brought to the region by past Treffens, the local government nonetheless firmly yanked the plug wires on the world's biggest GTI festival. Citing the effects of climate change and a need to consider sustainability, an official statement concluded, "The municipality of Maria Wörth will no longer host any conventional major automotive events in the next few years."

Obviously, this was a blow for many a VeeDub enthusiast, and for Volkswagen itself. The Treffen started as a grassroots festival, but VW had long supported its fans. It debuted

Wörthersee-specific concept cars like the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo, a sleek roofless two-seater built to celebrate 15 years of the Gran Turismo racing games. And who could forget the insanity of the GTI W12-650, with its 12-cylinder engine mounted amidships, and a top speed of 201 mph?

But no more. Wörthersee will return to its former charm as a picturesque resort in Bavaria's lake district.

Happily, Volkswagen almost immediately announced that the Treffen would still be held, just relocated to Wolfsburg. The event will be held next year, and VW plans to call the theme "Coming Home." There will be special highlights, and Volkswagen has promised a few surprises for loyal GTI fans.

Really, it's the best possible outcome for the Treffen. With such huge crowds, it had effectively outgrown its former location. Bringing the festival directly to Wolfsburg feels more fitting, and the year's break allows Volkswagen more time to plan.

The Golf R and GTI still both garner near-perfect scores for their blend of practicality and performance, and their fan base remains huge. If you've been putting off your own trek to the Treffen, 2024's the year.

Wolfsburg's volkswagen arena is the new home of wörthersee gti treffen.

Almost every year since 1982, thousands of Volkswagen fans have descended upon the little Austrian town of Reifnitz for the ‘Wörthersee GTI Treffen‘. We say ‘almost’, as Covid led to its cancellation several years running, and earlier this year, the local authority canned the legendary event as it doesn’t align with its environmental aims.

However, Volkswagen has swooped in to rescue the event and has now confirmed Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, Germany, as its new home. 

Set to take place from 26 - 28 July 2024, the event will be held in ‘the vicinity’ of the ground - the home of Volkswagen’s factory football team VfL Wolfsburg. The manufacturer has backed the much-loved Treffen (meaning ‘meet’) for over two decades and has a long tradition of bringing special concepts along for the occasion.

From the sounds of it, other than there not being a giant body of water next door, it’ll be rather similar to the much-loved Treffen (meaning ‘meet’) by Lake Wörthersee. We’re promised “vehicle presentations, stage shows and club meets,” along with “many other interesting events and surprises for GTI enthusiasts”.

Hopefully, the latter means we’ll see at least one interesting new reveal from Volkswagen. An image of the ID GTI concept with a save-the-date accompanies the press release, suggesting that will make an appearance, though it remains to be seen if the manufacturer will bring anything more along.

Imelda Labbé, from VW’s sales, marketing and aftersales board, said: “The GTI isn’t the only icon – the GTI Meeting has also acquired cult status over the decades. We feel it’s important to give the GTI community a new home at the heart of our brand here in Wolfsburg!”

Huge VW Show Worthersee Will Live On in Wolfsburg as Factory-Backed Event

Volkswagen has stepped in to save the once-doomed GTI meeting after its longtime hosts axed the event.

If you’re a Volkswagen fan, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of Worthersee. Officially called GTI-Treffen, it quickly grew to become one of the world’s largest VW-centric shows after its founding in 1982. The event’s official host, the Maria Worth local municipality in Austria, recently decided to axe the event in the name of climate impact and overcrowding. This decision left nearly 200,000 show-goers without a place to meet for the first time in 40 years.

Fortunately, Volkswagen has decided to pick up where Maria Worth is leaving off. The automaker has officially announced that it will host the show itself near the Autostadt museum which is in close proximity to the brand’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Volkswagen corporate is no stranger to Worthersee. In fact, the OEM has been backing the event since 2006 and has used it as a platform to reveal new road cars and concepts in years past. It was at Worthersee that Dieselgate-era VW CEO Martin Winterkorn encouraged engineers to stuff Ferdinand Piëch's W12 into a MK5 GTI .

Now, the automaker is officially hosting the event rebranded as GTI Coming Home, which feels more like a family holiday dinner than a car meetup, but who are we to judge?

“Our GTI fans are of great importance to Volkswagen and that's why the exchange with them is very dear to us," said VW board member Imelda Labbe in a press release. "For this reason, after the GTI Meeting at Lake Worthersee was unfortunately canceled, we decided pretty quickly to offer the GTI fan community in Wolfsburg a new home for the event.”

“Accordingly, we will certainly be able to offer some highlights and surprises in the coming year," added Labbe.

Even with its involvement as a sponsor in the past, VW has big shoes to fill when it comes to promoting and running a show as big as Worthersee. It would appear that the automaker has no qualms about this, though, as Wolfsburg is much better suited to house tens of thousands of attendees. Plus, VW says it has “other interesting events and surprises” up its sleeve to woo show-goers.

The first official GTI Coming Home show will be held in 2024. Those looking to get a fix of what could have been at Worthersee this year can still attend a planned interim event in Klagenfurt, which is a few kilometers outside of Maria Worth.

The best way to explore Lake Wörthersee is by boat. The lake opens up from a completely different – magical – perspective. Have a Walk at the famous Velden am Wörthersee Promenade

The promenade takes place in Velden from mid-July to the end of August.  Every evening, the Seecorso is transformed into an eventful pedestrian zone for visitors of all ages.  Acrobatic, magical, and comedic shows take place in front of the Schlosshotel Velden, at the Gemonapark, and in the Kurpark. 

More than 40 local and international artists inspire the spectators while strolling through the atmospheric place. 

Especially for smaller children, there is the Bambini promenade , which starts at 6 p.m.

Wörthersee Waldseilpark – Forest Rope Park in Pörtschach

The new forest rope park on the Niedere Gloriette promises climbing fun for young and old in Pörtschach.

Pyramidenkogel – Observation Tower

Worthersee Tour 2022

We're not overstating it when we say that, for those in the know, Worthersee in Austria is a Mecca to European car nuts. For a week or so every May, it really is the place to be to check out some of the coolest metal that the continent has to offer.

In fact, there's just nothing else quite like it and that's what makes it one of our favourite events on the show calendar… but, it has to be said that it's been a while. Yes, what with a certain global pandemic putting a stop to proceedings for the last couple of years, we were absolutely itching to get the team out there for 2022.

You see, Worthersee is less of a single event, and more of a whole collection of meets and other goings on around town. In many ways the big static show they lay on plays just a small part of the whole deal. Whether it's cruising around the mountains or the town, the sights and the sounds of a whole collection of motors on the road are really what it's all about. You never know what you're going to see next.

For us of course, the driving bit is a big part of the appeal, and we don't just mean the 1800-mile round-trip in our faithful MSRT crew van. No, Worthersee is chiefly about getting your cars out on the local roads and showing them off - and suffice to say we have more than a couple on the AF fleet that are Worthersee worthy. So, with that in mind, a decision was made early on take along some of our favourite roadgoing monsters - including our E28 BMW M535i, R32 Skyline GT-R, BMW M2 Competition, long wheelbase T6.1 Transporter and our VW Caddy V2 project - for a proper cruise around the Austrian Alps. The trouble there of course, is that there's almost as many cars on the trip as there are drivers… but that's nothing a massive car transporter can't sort out, right? And it's always nice to have a choice, isn't it?

So, we loaded up at the Detailing Academy, sent the HGV on its way, jumped in the van and rolled out…

As for pulling up and experiencing the week ahead, well in all honesty (and as you'll see from the pictures) it's an unbelievably busy few days of non-stop action in the Austrian mountains. And, although all this manic running around is difficult to fully absorb at the time, in hindsight we can see Worthersee in 2022 was pretty much the same as it's always been - a blur of visits, meets, outings, making sure we're fully prepped at the local jet wash, hooking up with old friends, checking out the famous show, after show, even more meets and, of course, checking out a whole load of the cool cars that have made the trip from all around Europe. In fact, we think it's almost impossible to describe in words… but you know what they say - a picture is worth a thousand of "em! So, with that in mind check out our very own mountain of highlights, something of a chronological picturebook of everything that happened along the way…

Phew, we think you'll agree all that was pretty hectic. As you can see, we had an absolute blast on what's become just about our favourite outing on the car culture calendar, but the big question is, after a huge police clamp down on modified cars and meets all over Europe, and more than a few tickets handed out this week in particular, will this be the last time that Worthersee week is quite so popular for modified car nuts? And more importantly, will we be making the trip in 2023? We guess that only time will tell on that one but we hope so, we certainly had more than a little fun on the way home this time around - after all it would have been almost rude not to put in our MSRT Transit crew van through its paces on the Nurbugring, right?

About Lake Wörthersee

Lake Wörthersee is the largest lake of Carinthia and because of its climatic location, it is one of the warmest alpine lakes, the water temperature reaching up to 25° Celcius in the summer, and sometimes even more. Its length is 16.5 Km in an East to West direction, embedded in the Klagenfurter Basin. The city of Klagenfurt, with its historic city center, lies approximatly 4 Km East of Lake Wörthersee, while Krumpendorf and Pörtschach are situated on the Northern shore of the lake and the city of Velden is located on the West end of Lake Wörthersee.

The Lake Wörthersee-Swimming Meet is one of the biggest open-water competitions with a mass start and four distances! The aim of the event is to invite open-water swimmers from all over the world to experience sports and team spirit, but also, simply to enjoy being together and to achieve top sports performances in the midst of the wonderful nature in the region of Wörthersee!

The Dutch Wörthersee 2k23 was a epic day!”

The 3 of september 2023 we gathered for the #5 edtion of The Dutch Wörthersee, Brouwersdam Zeeland.                                                                              

This sea side VAG only meeting is powered by vwprojects.nl. 18.000m outdoor for the most epic VAG cars & people! 

We saw people from the UK, Germany, Litouwen, Belguim and more, GREAT!

Each year we will try to make things special and go further then te prevoius edition. 

Early sept 2024 we will be there again, keep up with our social channels to be informed.
