Champagne Sunset Cruise

Sunset Cruises in Newport, RI are stunning and a terrific way to start your evening!  Sunset Sails are available on all three of our sailboats- Aquidneck , Sightsailer , and Starlight . 

Watching the sunset from the deck of one of our boats while sipping your favorite beverage and viewing spectacular sights is often the highlight of a visit to Newport!

Come aboard, sit back, and relax!  Newport’s sea breeze often starts to moderate towards sunset, so if you’re looking for a calmer and more leisurely cruise, a sunset cruise should fit the bill.

On sunset cruises, Newport’s sky often turns from a bright, sunny blue, to orange and violet, laced with red. 

Then, sailing back into the harbor, the entire waterfront is often bathed in warm, golden light, and waterfront windows are ablaze with reflections of the sun.

Of course every sail is different, and although we can’t guarantee you a fiery, red ball and green flash as the sun sinks beneath the horizon, Newport sunset cruises can be spectacular!

Where will we sail on Sunset Cruises?

Sunset cruises in Newport, RI offer magnificent sightseeing!   Your crew will raise sails (you can help if you like!) and then you’ll sail past Goat Island and into Narragansett Bay.

As you sip champagne or quaff your beer, you’ll sail past Fort Adams, get great views of the Pell Bridge, view Hammersmith Farm and see Clingstone, an iconic house on a rock. Depending on the wind and tide, we may make it past the lawn at Castle Hill, its iconic lighthouse and into Rhode Island Sound.

You’ll  see mega-yachts around the harbor as well as vintage 12 Meter America’s Cup boats docked nearby. 

Along the way, our friendly captain and crew will point out the sights and provide light, commentary.

  What’s Included on Sunset Sails?

Ticketed Sunset Cruises include champagne, beer, and water in the ticket price.  High Noon Seltzers are also available for purchase.  

*Complimentary champagne and beer are included in your ticket price, however, Sunset Cruises are not unlimited “booze cruises”.

Although we’ll serve a couple of rounds, we aim to create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere for all to enjoy. On Private charters, no drinks are provided, however you may bring your own. 

What to bring on Sunset Cruises?

Sunset cruises, even in the Summer, can be cooler on the water.  We recommend bringing a sweatshirt or light jacket and long pants in the Spring and Fall.  Blankets on board for guests to use during cool evenings.  

We offer Sunset Cruises every day throughout our season. We recommend buying tickets in advance as sunset cruises are one of our most popular cruises and frequently sell out.

Either daytime or sunset will be wonderful. It just depends on the rest of your schedule that day - touring plans, dinner plans, etc. You can't go wrong!

Inside the life of Newport Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong

NEWPORT, R.I. (WJAR) — He has the longest name in politics. Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong of Newport.

His actual full name is longer than the alphabet. Khamsyvoravong goes by Mayor Xay, pronounced sigh.

“I walk, I play squash and I sail," he said.

In his historic home.

Where "Red helicopter lead change with kindness,” fascinates him, his pillows show the Newport Bridge.

It’s a city he's passionate about.

As much as a cheerleader for the city by the sea as Buddy Cianci was for the Capitol City.

“I'm someone who is driven by community and public service," said Khamsyvoravong.

His family album holds the story of his dad who immigrated from Laos, thanks to the support of a church group.

Khamsyvoravong's dad married his mom, now a retired pediatrician.

He grew up with his sister in Barrington.

“I certainly had the benefits of a great education and upbringing. I was a strong student. Growing up that was the most important thing in our family, and you never take that for granted," said Khamsyvoravong.

Once a nationally competitive figure skater, he went to brown for his undergraduate and masters, then on to Roger Williams Law School, where he would meet his wife of three years Alicia, also an attorney.

“My wife is brilliant. My wife is super smart," he said.

It was love at first sight for him, but not her.

He persisted for a year before she agreed to go on a date, and now, they’ve been married for three years.

“Right now we’re watching "Peaky Blinders," said Khamsyvoravong.

He chaired Providence Water and ran Frank Caprios' failed campaign for governor along the way with political aspirations.

The mayor of Newport is elected by fellow city councilors.

The council votes on policy for the city and he is the ceremonial head of the city.

The pay is $4,000 a year.

He works in finance as well.

Khamsyvoravong said his favorite food is a grilled cheese sandwich as NBC 10 sat down for lunch as one of his spots, the Franklin Spa.

“If you sit at this counter, I've seen people who are billionaires talking to public works employees. Newport is where worlds collide.”

Down the street is another favorite. The Newport Harbor where he sails, and every Sunday in a small boat through the winter.

“I can't control the wind, the weather. All I can control is that 12-foot boat. It's kind of humble to look at life that way.” At 39, Mayor Xay seems well adjusted.

Woman charged after allegedly crashing car into birthday party, killing 2 young kids

An 8-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother were killed in Saturday's crash.

A woman is facing second-degree murder charges after she allegedly drove into a child's birthday party in Michigan, killing two children and injuring several others, officials said.

Marshella Chidester, 66, allegedly struck a building at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Newport Saturday afternoon, and her car came to rest about 25 feet inside the building, according to the sheriff and prosecutors.

An 8-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother were killed, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery Yorkey said.

The victims' mother and 11-year-old brother suffered serious injuries, Yorkey said.

A 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman also suffered serious injuries, the prosecutor said.

"They walked into that birthday party having a fun time. They were sitting at that table eating, and this woman crashed her car through this building, destroying all of our lives," the aunt of the 8-year-old and 4-year-old victims told reporters on Tuesday.

"I had to be the one to tell my sister her babies were gone," the aunt said through tears. "She said, 'How am I supposed to live without my babies?'"

"My nephew and my sister are still fighting for their lives," she added.

Childester is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, Yorkey said.

Chidester was arraigned on Tuesday and is due to return to court on April 30.
