The Budweiser Clydesdales are trotting back into Southwest Florida for four days of tour stops in Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Alva and LaBelle.

The massive horses visit Southwest Florida every year. They’ve been the beloved symbol for beer company Anheuser-Busch since 1933.

This year is even more special than usual, though: It’s the 90th anniversary for the Budweiser Clydesdales. The popular horses will celebrate that milestone all year long with appearances throughout the United States.

 “We’re thrilled to celebrate the 90th anniversary of this cherished icon as we enter a new chapter in our company’s storied heritage,” said Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth in a news release announcing the 90 th anniversary. “As a longtime Budweiser fan, I’m excited for the opportunity to commemorate the Clydesdales, their caretakers and the inspiration they bring in a new way.

“The Clydesdales represent the best of the American spirit, and we are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with our teams and consumers both in their hometowns and on national stages.”

All Southwest Florida appearances are free. Each stop features eight horses (a full hitch) and the famous Red Beer Wagon, unless otherwise noted.

• The Shell Factory & Nature Park, 16554 N. Cleveland Ave., North Fort Myers. 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22:
• Bell Tower Shops, 13499 S. Cleveland Ave., south Fort Myers. 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23
• 31 Produce/Cracker Shack Café , 18672 State Road 31, Alva. 3-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24. Two horses only.
• And the Swamp Cabbage Festival Parade, 8 Park Ave, LaBelle. The parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

No tour stops are planned in the Naples area this year, says Madeline Lukomski, marketing manager for local Anheuser-Busch distributor Suncoast Beverage Sales.

Here are some fun facts about the beloved "gentle giants":

• Each Clydesdale stands about 6 feet tall and weighs about 2,000 pounds.
• The horses are bay-colored with four white legs, a blaze of white on the face, and a black mane and tail.
• Every hitch travels with a Dalmatian dog — a throwback to the early days of beer brewing, when Dalmatians were bred and trained to guard the wagon and horses while on beer deliveries.
• A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES 2023 TOUR

Description.

Bell Tower once again will play host to Anheuser-Busch’s famed Budweiser Clydesdales, which will pose for photographs with adoring fans and strut around the mall.

The Clydesdale team will appear from 5p.m to 7p.m. on Thursday February 23rd. Horses and their talkative handlers will be hitched for about 45 minutes near Daruma on the north side of Bell Tower, offering plenty of opportunity for photographs before beginning a walk around the mall’s ring road. The Clydesdales will make stops near the main entrance near Blue Pointe and Grimaldi’s, Stogie Pairing, Fresh market, Cantina Laredo 7 Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café before returning to the lot near Daruma.

Bell Tower restaurants and bars will have specials throughout the day. Plus, a bounce house will be set up near Talbots along with the infamous Way Too Tall Torrie, stilt walker and balloon artist will be available for photo ops.

Horse-story In the Making:

The budweiser clydesdales.

From the Prohibition era to Super Bowl commercials, there is perhaps nothing more iconic in Budweiser’s storied history than its team of Clydesdale horses. More than just a mascot, the Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch for more than 80 years.

History of the Budweiser Clydesdales

In April 1933, August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father, August A. Busch, Sr., with the gift of a six-horse Clydesdale hitch to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition of beer.

Realizing the marketing potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged to have a second six-horse Clydesdale hitch sent to New York to mark the event. The Clydesdales drew a crowd of thousands on their way to the Empire State Building. After a small ceremony, a case of Budweiser was presented to former Governor Alfred E. Smith in appreciation of his years of service in the fight against Prohibition.

This hitch continued on a tour of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, thrilling thousands, before stopping in Washington, D.C., in April 1933 to reenact the delivery of one of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Shortly after the hitch was first introduced, the six-horse Clydesdale team increased to eight. On March 30, 1950, in commemoration of the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery, a Dalmatian was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdales’ mascot. Now, a Dalmatian travels with each of the Clydesdale hitches.

The Clydesdales Today

Today, the Budweiser Clydesdales continue to be an enduring symbol of the brewer’s heritage, tradition and commitment to quality, making hundreds of appearances across the country each year.

To properly prepare the Clydesdales for their appearances, a team of dedicated handlers oversees their care. Expert groomers travel on the road with the hitch at least 10 months out of the year. Another team oversees their diet; each hitch horse will consume as much as 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay, and up to 30 gallons of water on a warm day.

When it comes time to travel to an appearance, 10 horses; the famous red, white, and gold beer wagon; and other essential equipment are transported in three 50-foot tractor-trailers. Cameras mounted in the trailers are connected to monitors in the cabs that enable the drivers to keep a watchful eye on their precious cargo during transport. Air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring in the trailers ease the rigors of traveling. The team stops each night at local stables so the “gentle giants” can rest.

The team also travels with hitch drivers, who endure a lengthy training process before they assume the prestigious role of a Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch Driver. Driving the combined 12 tons of wagon and horses requires expert skill and physical strength. The 40 pounds of lines held by the driver plus the tension of the horses pulling creates a weight of more than 75 pounds.

Presently, the Budweiser Clydesdales reside at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis for public viewing. Visitors can also see the Clydesdales up-close at Warm Springs Ranch , the premier Budweiser Clydesdales breeding establishment in Boonville, Missouri. Both attractions are open seasonally.

When they’re not making appearances around the country, the Budweiser Clydesdales also continue to be marketing stalwarts for Anheuser-Busch. They first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1975, and have since appeared in countless Super Bowl commercials for the company.

Did you know?

- Each of the Clydesdales’ handcrafted harnesses and collars weigh approximately 130 pounds.

- The Budweiser Clydesdales are given short names, such as Duke, Mark and Bud, to make it easier for the driver to give commands to the horses during a performance.

- Budweiser Clydesdales’ horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds.

- Dalmatians were known as coach dogs because they ran between the wheels of coaches or carriages and were companions to the horses. Since the 1950s, Dalmatians have traveled with the Budweiser Clydesdales hitch, perched atop the wagon proudly seated next to the driver.

- The turn-of-the-century beer wagons have been meticulously restored and are kept in excellent condition. The wagons are equipped with two braking systems: a hydraulic pedal device that slows the vehicle for turns and downhill descents, and a hand-brake that locks the rear wheels when the wagon is at a halt.

FLINT, MI — An iconic Budweiser Clydesdale is visiting Genesee and Lapeer counties this week.

Officials with local beer distributor Fabiano Brothers Inc. have announced special appearances by a world-famous Budweiser Clydesdale Wednesday, Aug. 16, through Friday, Aug. 18, in Burton, Flint, and Lapeer as the iconic horses travel across the country in support of Anheuser-Busch’s partnership with the nonprofit Folds of Honor.

The Budweiser Clydesdale will be at Sharky’s Sports Bar in Burton from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Flint Farmers’ Market from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, and at the Lapeer Days beer tent from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. During these events, visitors can take photos with the Clydesdale, and Fabiano Brothers will collect donations for the local Folds of Honor chapter, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled to bring an iconic Budweiser Clydesdale to mid-Michigan this month in partnership with Folds of Honor, continuing our company’s commitment to supporting the military and honoring those who serve our country, some of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy,” Jamie Farrell, director of sales and marketing Anheuser-Busch brands for Fabiano Brothers Inc., said in a statement. “We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to support Folds of Honor in its mission to inspire courage and determination in our military families as they seek new opportunities and plan for brighter futures.”

Through its scholarship program, Folds of Honor helps ensure local families of fallen or disabled U.S. military members and families of first responders receive educational opportunities and support.

To date, Anheuser-Busch, its brands and wholesaler partners have donated $21.7 million to Folds of Honor, which has contributed to the nonprofit’s delivery of 44,000 scholarships since its founding, according to the release.
