Huaraz : a 3 day itinerary for hiking & nature lovers.

Hailed as the capital of the Ancash region of Peru and located at a dizzying 3000m above sea level, Huaraz welcomes in thousands of adventure seekers, history buffs and nature lovers every year.

Home to Huascaran, the highest mountain in Peru (6768m) and surrounded by the the snow capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca , Huaraz provides the perfect base for exploring glaciers and hidden lakes such as Laguna 69, within the nature of Huascaran National Park. If walking is too slow a pace for you, there is no shortage of adrenaline pumping options including mountain biking, paragliding, snowboarding, rock climbing and so much more.

Go Travel and Talk Top Tip: Because of Huaraz's elevation, altitude sickness is common. Drink plenty of water and coca tea which is often given out for free at the hostels, or head to the central market where you can pick up a bag for 1 SOL. I would also suggest heading to a local pharmacy and picking up some anti-sickness tablets (Sorchi tablets) . I would also recommend chewing on coca leaves as this alleviates the headaches that are common when at altitude. And  wrap up warm! It is much colder in Huaraz compared to other cities in Peru .

*please note that if you are not into hiking / outdoor pursuits, Huaraz probably isn't the place for you.

Huaraz Laguna 69 Peru travel itinerary

Huaraz is a well connected city in Peru with multiple buses dropping people off daily. There are multiple bus stations rather than one single place so make sure you check with the bus company you book with, as a reference:

  • Linea buses depart from Terminal Plaza Norte
  • Movil Tour buses leave from Avenida Javier Prado, Paseo de la Republica or Avenida Alfreedo Mendiola
  • Cruz de Sur buses depart from Avenida Javier Prado
  • Oltursa buses leave from Avenida Aramburu.

If you are arriving in Huaraz from Lima, it will take around eight hours. Costs vary: between S/.35-100 (€9/$10 - €27-$30) for a one way ticket, depending on bus company and class you book. Through personal experience, I would advise traveling with:

  • Cruz del Sur
  • Movil Tours

If you are coming from Trujillo or Chichlayo, the bus is direct and takes a maximum of seven hours and often a lot less due to their speed. We took a night bus from Trujillo and we got to Huaraz in five hours! Cost for a one way ticket is between S/. 35-60 (€9-$10 - €16-$18). I would advise traveling with Movil Tours or Linea.

You can catch a direct flight with LC Peru from Lima (Jorge Chavez Airport) to Huaraz.

Huaraz's airport is located outside of Anta Village, 25km from the centre of Huaraz. The flight takes one hour (be careful: there are big restrictions on luggage, 15kg max for hold bags and 10kg for carry on).

You can then take a taxi or collectivo to the centre of Huaraz, they all hang around right outside the door to arrivals – taxis cost anywhere between S/. 30-50 (€8-$9 - €13-$15) and collectivos cost S/.3 (around $1).

Huaraz is a fairly crazy city with A LOT going on so during the day, it is really nice to take a stroll around. However, as the city is fairly large and some areas can be dangerous at night, I would suggest making use of the many taxis and collectivos driving around the city.

Collectivos:

Collectivos are minibus style vans that whizz around the city at all hours of the day. These are much cheaper than taxis and really give you an authentic experience. It can be quite overwhelming as most of the time they don’t completely stop to pick you up… you are expected to jump on whilst it slow crawls down the road. Be careful of your belongings on these as there are rife with pickpockets. You can get a collectivo from pretty much anywhere, just stand on the side of the road and look for the town name on the front of the minibus / van.

Before we get into the details - lets just talk about the weather in Huaraz first...

Firstly, it is cold. So stock up on woolly jumpers, scarfs, hats and gloves.

Secondly, the weather in Huaraz fluctuates by the hour in rainy season (December to March). From clear blue skies to torrential rain in the afternoon. So I suggest getting out earlier in the morning before the afternoon rain around 3pm.

In dry season it is much better, with clear blue skies everyday. But the evenings do get very cold so again, make sure you have layers of clothes to put on.

Huaraz Laguna 69 Peru travel itinerary

If you are travelling from Lima, Trujillo, Chichlayo or another Peruvian city on a night bus, you will most likely arrive early in the morning.  Make sure you have your layers of clothes at the ready - it is cold in Huaraz!

Head straight to your accommodation to check in (most have 24 hour receptions).

Best Hostel in Huaraz:

I highly recommend   Hostel Akilpo which is located in the heart of Huaraz and a couple of blocks away from the central square (around a 20 minute walk from the central bus terminal - use  Maps.me).

Akilpo hostel is a really big hit with backpackers and adventure seekers. On the same street is the colourful central market which is bustling at all hours of the day. It has a great tour agency on site and a beautiful top terrace/kitchen offering great views of the streets below. SUPER COMFY beds with privacy curtains and great bathroom facilities. This hostel is super sociable but not a party place as a lot of people come here for the hiking, so most nights, it is light outs by 9pm! Cost: S/.30 (€8/$9) per night for eight bed dorm. There is someone on reception 24/7 so if you get in super early from the night bus, head straight there and ring the bell. The door is located next to the pharmacy.

Acclimitisation:

Once you have dropped off your bags and drank some Coca Tea (make sure you do this to help with the altitude sickness), spend the morning mooching around the city. Take it slow because your body wont be use to the altitude - and although you think you are fine, altitude sickness creeps up on you very quickly!

Head to  Cafe California  for a delicious breakfast. The cafe serves up some of the best all day breakfasts in town. It may not be the cheapest place to eat (around S/. 22-28), but the portions are decent and who can turn down fresh roasted coffee and pancakes! The cafe is also a great place to hang out, with comfy sofas, an awesome vibe, free wifi, a large book exchange, music and lots of board games to keep you entertained if the weather isn't so great outside. Opens from 7am.

Visit The Mercado Central de Huaraz:

If you stay at Hostel Akilpo , you are right in the centre of the action, with views of the local market from your bedroom window - providing endless entertainment as the day starts up and continues to flurry below. If you are veggie or vegan, it can be overwhelming - expect to see yellow chicken caracasses everywhere, ladies in traditional dress selling and buying Guinea pigs and lots of noise and chaos.

Whilst it is a lot to take in, the central market gives you a true insight into life in Huaraz , and some of the cheapest fruit and veg you will find in Peru. Whilst I would say to avoid the meat section if you are veggie like me, the market is a must do when you are in Huaraz.

The Mercado Central de Huaraz can be found on Calle Jiron Juan de la Cruz Romero, but it spills out on to the next couple of streets too.

Willcacocha Hike:

If you are feeling up for it, later in the morning head out to Willcacocha for an acclimitisation hike. You can get a collectivo from the street corner next to the Central Market (outside Hostel Akilpo) - look for the name on the front of the van. This should cost you no more than S/. 2.5 for one way.

The journey will take around 25 minutes to take you to the Cordiliera Negra. Whilst the hike is easier than the others, such as the Laguna 69, it still requires effort as the ascent feels like it goes on forever - in fact it only takes around 2 hours max each way. But remember your body is still adjusting to the elevation. At the top you will have incredible views of the Cordillera Blanca across from a beautiful lagoon.

To return to Huaraz, go back to the starting point of your hike and wait on the roadside for a collectivo which whiz by fairly frequently. There is also a shop at the bottom to stock up on some snacks for the ride home.

** As an alternative, you could check out Lake Paron for your acclimitisation hike. As the largest lake in Huascaran National Park, Laguna Paron is stunning and there are few crowds at any point of the year. However, from Huaraz is about three hours drive to the North.

When you get back to your hostel / accommodation, have a shower and relax (and more Coca tea) before heading out to   Krishna Bhog - a pure Indian / vegetarian restaurant . This place is unbelievable. Based from the owners home, the Krishna Bhog is only a ten minute taxi ride from the central market (don't walk in the dark). If you like Indian inspired veggie food, this is for you! And it is supper sociable with communal style dining and BYOB (bring your own booze).

Get to be early, because you are up at 6am!

Huaraz Laguna 69 Peru travel itinerary

The Pastoruri Glacier:

The Pastoruri Glacier is stunning glacier based in the Cordillera Blanca and the Huascaran National Park.

If you go with an organised bus tour (which most people do), it takes around three and a half hours to reach the bottom of the glacier and costs S/.30 (€8/$9). You leave early, so make sure you pack breakfast (although there is a stop 30 minutes into the journey) and plenty of snacks and water. You can organise this tour through your accommodation / hostel.

Before you arrive at Pastoruri, you will stop off at Patococha lake, which offers beautiful reflections and home to many ducks and birdlife. You will also see gigantic Puya Raimondi plants, nicknames 'Queen of the Andes'. As a relative of the pineapple family, these plants can reach up to 15 meters tall.

Once you arrive at the Pastoruri Glacier, you walk for around forty five minutes to one hour to reach the viewpoint. It is absolutely stunning, but at 5,100m above sea level, I found it tough and I really felt it on my chest, so my advice is to take it nice and slow.

Sadly, it has been estimated that in seven to ten years time, the Pastoruri Glacier will disappear through global warming. So if you are in Huaraz, I strongly suggest going to see it.

And as part of the tour, you will stop at a couple of places in Huascaran National Park along the way back and at the same cafe you stopped at on the way.

Go Travel and Talk Top Tips:

  • Prepare for the altitude with lots of water, coca tea and chewing coca candy / leaves.
  • Take warm clothes and a waterproof jacket, it gets very cold by the glacier.
  • Pack suncream.

Chavin de Huantar Archiological Site:

As an alternative to the Glacier (or as an extra day in Huaraz) you could spend a day at the  Chavin de Huantar ruins.

The Chavin de Huantar ruins are a fascinating archaeological site with underground labyrinths tracing back to the earliest Andean cultures. Most artefacts and findings date back to 1200 BC. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Chavin de Hunter is a must see for those interested in history, Peruvian culture and spirituality.

It can be easily explored as a day trip from Huaraz, either as an organised tour (S/.40 / €10 / $12) or you can catch a local bus from outside the Central Market which leave Huaraz at 7.30am and 9am for S/.12 (€3 / $4) and return in the afternoon between 3pm and 5pm (note the site is closed on Mondays).

The bus journey takes around two and a half hours to reach the Chavin de Hunatar ruins and it is another two and a half to get back to Huaraz, so you actually spend more time on the bus then you do in the archaeological site, but it is worth seeing. When you arrive you have the option of hiring a guide. I would strongly suggest doing this so you can learn about the history of the site. Cost around S/.40 (€10 / $12).

Go Travel and Talk Top Tip:

  • Prepare for altitude sickness as you go via a pass which is 4500m high
  • Bring warm clothes, it gets cold on the journey back.

Depending on what activity you choose to do, you will arrive back in Huaraz around 6pm. Have a shower, relax and grab a bite to eat and a beer at Trivio Restaurant.    At Trivio you get huge portions for great prices - for a S/. 10 menu del dia you can an appretize, main meal, drink and desert. It has a great atmosphere as well and it is the official restaurant for selling Sierra Andina beer, a craft beer brewed in Huaraz.

Early to bed - you have another super early start!

Huaraz Laguna 69 Peru travel itinerary

The Laguna 69 trek is an ABSOLUTE bucket list must do if you are visiting Huaraz!

You will be blown away by the scenery along this trek. You can do this on your own (it is very well marked to get to the lake, although transport can be difficult to organise, speak to your hostel) or book through a tour. I booked through a tour for the ease factor as the bus picks you up directly from your hostel, prepare for an early 5am start though! (I booked through Akilpo Hostel).

After stopping for a hearty breakfast (not included), you are then dropped off in Huascaran National Park where you begin your trek. It takes around three to four hours to reach Laguna 69 and it is worth every bit of sweat and occasional nausea. You start in Cebolla Pampa which sits at 3800m and you climb to 4600m to meet the glory of Laguna 69!

Whilst the last thirty minutes is tough (for me anyway), once you get over the ridge and catch the sight of the bright turquoise waters set against a dramatic white backdrop of snowy mountains, all will be forgotten.

Pack a picnic as the lake is the perfect setting for having lunch . It is then a quick two and a half hour climb back down to the bus. You should be back at your hostel by 6pm. It cost us S/.60 (€16 / $18) to book through Akilpo hostel but you can definitely get it cheaper in town, around S/.40 (€10 / $12). Transport and guide are included (although you do the trek unguided, they are just there to show you the starting point and sites along the way). Food and drink is not included.

  • Drink  plenty of water.
  • Drink coca tea or eat coca leaves/ candy – AVOID caffeine because it dehydrates you.
  • Acclimatise . Spend two or three days in Huaraz before starting this hike.

What To Pack For The Laguna 69:

  • Food for lunch and lots of tasty snacks and of course water.
  • Coca tea and leaves to chew on for the altitude.
  • Money for park entrance (S/.10) and any food/water you want to buy.
  • Suncream is an absolute must and a hat for sun protection.
  • Waterproof clothing - it is known to rain at points on the hike.
  • Layers - it goes from hot to cold constantly along the hike.
  • Wear sturdy trainers or preferably hiking shoes as the terrain can be tough.

Your Onward Journey From Huaraz:

You will arrive back to Huaraz for 6pm or just after . You can either spend another night relaxing or jump on a night bus to get yourself to your next destination. I would suggest pre-booking your ticket as the buses fill up fairly quickly.  Use the suggested bus carrier options above to go to their individual websites.  Please note, each company has a different bus terminal in Huaraz - make sure you go to the right one.

Huaraz Laguna 69 Peru travel itinerary

You have many options across the surrounding areas of Huaraz.

Popular choices include:

  • Laguna Paron (Mentioned above - 1 day hike)
  • Santa Cruz (Four day trek)
  • Cordillera Huayhuash (Eight to thirteen days)
  • Quilcayhuanca (Four day trek)

All of these hikes can be booked through Akilpo Hostel   or head to one of the many tour agencies in town. Costs vary. You can hire all the equipment you need through the tour agency or buy it in town – there are lots of shops that cater for hiking in Huaraz.

Final Thoughts...

Huaraz is an amazing place for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers  and whilst there is not much to do in the city itself, there is plenty to see. It is authentic and raw and a brilliant insight into life in the mountains of Peru.

30 Aug A Complete Travel Guide to Huaraz: Peru’s Hiking Capital

Girl celebrates trekking the Santa Cruz trail and crossing Punto Union Pass

If you’ve stumbled upon this blog post it must be that you’ve discovered some of the best hiking in Peru is not solely in Cusco. While the treks to Machu Picchu are stunning, some of the most impressive views of this popular backpacker destination can actually be found in Huaraz, otherwise known as Peru’s hiking capital.

Sitting in a valley outside the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range, Huaraz is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise and a hub for some of the most beautiful trails in the world through the Andes Mountains. Tourists from Huaraz can choose from a number of activities including day trips to glaciers, ice-climbing summits, hiking to gatorade blue lakes,  or even tackling multi-day treks such as Santa Cruz and the famed Huayhuash.

By the time I visited Huaraz, photos of bright blue lakes and icy glaciers had been saved in my bucket list folders for years, so it felt surreal to finally be there. In total, I spent about a month in Huaraz taking day trips to places like Laguna 69 and going on longer treks like Santa Cruz and Huayhuash. My time in Huaraz was nothing short of incredible and a place where I witnessed some of the most mind-blowing natural scenery and pushed my body to limits I didn’t even know it could go.

WHERE IS HUARAZ?

Huaraz is about 400 km (250 miles) north of Lima sitting at about 3,052 m, or 10,013 ft (pretty high up there!). It’s a small city in a valley surrounded by snow-capped Andean mountains and is the main hub to depart from when exploring the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash Mountains.

GETTING TO HUARAZ

Huaraz doesn’t have an airport so the only way to get there is to drive yourself or take a bus (the most popular and most practical option for most).

To get to Huaraz from Lima, you can take an 8-9 hour bus. It’s possible to depart during the day, but the most popular option is to book a night bus so you can sleep (hopefully) the entirety of the trip.

There are a number of bus companies to book with such as Movil , Civa and Cruz del Sur . For easy booking and comparing prices, you can search and book your ticket on Busbud .

When choosing your ticket, note there are different seating options based on seat reclining degrees and other factors. For example, cheaper seats only recline 140 degrees whereas premier seats recline 180 degrees, similar to a bed for better sleep – a game changer on those overnight trips.

Ticket prices are typically around S/100 ($25 USD) depending on when you book and which seat you choose.

After arriving in Huaraz by bus, you can walk or take a taxi to your accommodation.

If traveling the other way from Huaraz to Lima, the process is the same.

Huaraz Peru - winding road in Huarascan after Santa cruz trek

To get to Huaraz from Trujillo, you can also take an 8 – 9 hour overnight bus which can be booked with Movil or Linea . For easy booking and comparing prices, you can search and book your ticket on Busbud .

When choosing your ticket, note there are different seating options based on seat reclining degrees and other options. For example, cheaper seats only recline 140 degrees whereas premier seats recline 180 degrees, similar to a bed for better sleep – a game changer on those overnight trips.

Ticket prices are typically around S/65 ($17 USD) depending on when you book and which seat you choose.

After arriving in Huaraz, you can walk or take a taxi to your accommodation.

If traveling the other way from Huaraz to Trujillo, the process is the same.

ACCLIMATING TO THE ALTITUDE

When you arrive in Huaraz, before you do any activities you first need to acclimate to the high altitude. Huaraz is at 3,052 m / 10,013 ft and all the outdoor activities mentioned below are even higher. This can be a shock to the body and it’s absolutely essential that you give yourself time to acclimate  before taking on physical activities.

For those wondering what acclimating means… basically there’s less oxygen at higher levels and your body needs time to get used to functioning while using less oxygen. If you’ve never been at a higher altitude like this, you can expect feeling more fatigued much easier, having headaches, getting dehydrated quicker and if you get major altitude sickness you can have other symptoms like nausea and diarrhea.

Give yourself time to acclimate for at least 2-3 days before doing anything strenuous and anticipate that you may need to take it slowly. Make sure to drink lots and lots of water daily and stay nourished. To avoid altitude sickness you can also take medication (I personally recommend doing this before hiking) and drink coca tea – a popular beverage to help with altitude in Peru.

In the unfortunate scenario that you do get altitude sickness, it’s ideal to have altitude medication,  Imodium , nausea meds , ibuprofen and electrolytes . If you’re able to descend from the higher altitude, do that otherwise take it very slowly and rest when you can.

Woman resting during the Santa Cruz trek in Huaraz Peru at laguna

While hiking, it’s essential to stay hydrated and take it slowly. You’ll notice physical activity is more difficult at high altitude and you may be out of breath very easily. That’s ok, just remember that how you react to the altitude doesn’t have anything to do with your fitness level. So without judgment, take it slowly and listen to your body.

For me personally, I feel like I never fully got used to the high altitude and even as someone in decent shape, every hike was exhausting and made me feel like I had asthma. But I learned to be patient and go at my own pace.

trujillo huaraz movil tours

To avoid altitude sickness symptoms especially at the higher hiking trails, I also suggest taking altitude medication in the morning before even beginning your hike. You will still feel the effects in terms of exhaustion and difference in breathing, but you should minimize your risk for unwelcome symptoms (especially in the outdoors) like headaches, nausea and diarrhea. Personally I’m not a big medication person, but after getting these uncomfortable symptoms once during a hike which caused me to turn back, I’d rather just take the pill and avoid it altogether.

It’s also common in Peru to chew on coca leaves while hiking – something I didn’t find helpful but many do.

Sign of Laguna Churup altitude - Huaraz Peru

1. Explore the city

When you first arrive, (like I mention above) it’s best to not have any physical activity immediately planned to allow yourself time to adjust to the altitude. Instead, spend your first day or two exploring the local market, walking through Plaza de Armas, shopping for gear, comparing tour options, hanging out at cafes, stocking up on snacks for hikes, and buying alpaca woven clothes for the cold nights.

Some exploring on your own is always encouraged, but here’s some places I enjoyed while in Huaraz:

  • Mercado Central de Huaraz
  • Plaza de Armas
  • Artesian market of handmade knit clothing next to the Cathedral

California Cafe

  • Andino Cafe
  • Cantuu Cafe

2. Do a day hike on your own

Many activities in Huaraz require or are more convenient to do with a guided tour because of transport. However, there are a few day hikes that you can do on your own by catching a colectivo or taxi to the trailhead and following the trail freely. These are all great as highlights to your Huaraz trip or as a means to acclimate before longer treks.

Laguna Churup is my most highly-rated day hike to do self-guided because it’s easy to complete on your own. It’s very straightforward to get to the trailhead and the trail is clearly marked. While still popular, Lake Churup is also not too touristy and it’s absolutely beautiful!

Laguna Churup in Huaraz Peru

Length: 6 km /  3.6 miles in total

Height: 4,450 meters /  14,600 feet

Type of trail:  In and out. The trail is a steady climb up, not technical although there is a small portion where you’ll need to grab onto chains to climb up, but it’s nothing too difficult.

Time:   From the bus stop, it’s about a 45 minute drive to the trailhead. The hike up takes about 2-3 hours to complete on average. At the top, you’ll probably spend about an hour there (or longer if you want to swim), and finally the way down is about 1.5 hours followed by a 45 minute drive back to Huaraz. Altogether, you should expect to leave Huaraz at 7am and be back around 3/4 PM (if you catch the earlier buses back) making your trip in total about 7-8 hours.

Location:  Laguna Churup is about  45 minute drive from Huaraz, in Huascaran National Park, specifically in an area called Pitek.

Getting there:   To get to the Laguna Churup trailhead, it’s pretty simple. In Huaraz, go to the intersection of Avenue Agustin Gamarra and Avenue Antonio Raymondi. It’s here on Google Maps but also labeled as “Bus to Llupa” or “Combi hacia Llupa” on Maps.Me. From here you can catch a colectivo van by paying 20 soles round-trip and they will drop you off directly at the trailhead. Colectivos begin leaving at 7am and leave thereafter pretty frequently whenever the bus is full.

My suggestion is to arrive at 6:45 AM and catch the first bus at 7 AM. To get back to Huaraz, the vans begin around 2 PM and leave every half hour or so once they are full.  In my experience, this was a very organized system where the driver gave me a ticket, explained pick up times, and it honestly felt more reliable than many of the tours I went on.

Entrance fee:  The Huascaran National Park fee is S/30 ($8 USD). If you plan to do more activities soon after, there’s also a 3 day pass for S/60 ($15 USD) and a month pass for S/150 ($38 USD).

Solo travel approved?   Absolutely, yes! It’s easy to meet others while in Huaraz to join you on this hike, but even if you don’t and end up venturing out alone, the trail is plenty safe and there will be many other backpackers on the collectivo who will join you on the trail. Just make sure to have all the right gear you need in case.

Laguna 513 is comparable to Laguna 69 (read more later in this post) minus the crowds and features bright blue water with a towering Hualcan mountain peak behind. It’s a well-marked trail that’s easy to do on your own and perfect to acclimate before doing longer treks.

Length:   15 km  /  9 miles

Time:   6-7 hours to complete not including transportation

Type of trail:  In and out

Height:   4,431 meters / 14,537 feet

Elevation gain:   865 meters ~ 2,837 feet

Location:  The trailhead begins in Carhuaz from an area called Shonquipampa , about an hour drive from Huaraz.

Getting there:   It’s possible to reach the trailhead by a private taxi all the way there, or by taking a colectivo to Carhuaz and then a taxi into the Shonquipampa valley. There are also some tours available for Laguna 513 that you can find in the city.

Entrance fee:  None!

Solo travel approved?   This is a well-marked trail so if you’re confident in hiking alone it’s possible to do, just make sure you have all the appropriate gear and are prepared. Otherwise, I suggest finding some friends to join you, or there are a few tours available in Huaraz.

Laguna Llaca is a much less popular trail and good for those who are really trying to get off the beaten path. I didn’t do it myself, and there’s little information on the internet about it, but I did meet a Peruvian guy and Dutch girl who completed the hike, both of which said it was stunning and a unique experience compared to the other busy Huaraz lakes. However, it seems there is a bit more work to get there, so this is for the adventurous, and down-for-whatever travelers.

To learn more about this trek here it is on AllTrails and a helpful review on TripAdvisor . But remember, not everything is on the internet, when in doubt ask someone at your accomodation reception, other travelers, or tour guides about Laguna Llaca.

Length:   AllTrails lists this as an 18 km / 11 miles hike

Time:  This is a longer one, and will take about 7 hours to complete not including transportation

Type of trail:   In and out

Height:   4,470 meters / 14,665 feet

Elevation gain: 938 meters / 3,077 feet

Location:  This is close to where Laguna Churup is located, about 27 km out of Huaraz in Huascaran National Park.

Getting there: It’s possible to take a private taxi (ask – they’ll know where to go and give you a price) or take a collectivo to Marian and then start the trail from Lazy Dog Inn .

Entrance fee:  The Huascaran National Park fee is S/30 ( $8 USD). If you plan to do more activities soon after, there’s also a 3 day pass for S/60 ($15 USD) and a month pass for S/150 ($38 USD).

Solo travel approved?  Ishhh… because of the difficulty to navigate getting to this lake I would personally not do it alone. However, if you meet a group of people who want to join and split a taxi, then I would absolutely go for it! Just make sure to have all the appropriate gear you need just in case.

Other honorable mentions for day hikes that I’ve heard of but admittedly know nothing about are Laguna Radian , Laguna Rajucolta , and Laguna Wilcacocha for those who want more day hike options in Huaraz.

3. Take a tour to Laguna Paron

Laguna Paron is one of the most popular day trips you can do in Huaraz because it has absolutely stunning views for almost no physical effort. For those looking for a wild hike, this may sound disappointing but it’s a great way to acclimate and a staple activity in Huaraz. If you’re lucky enough to have clear skies, you’ll see the shiny mountain peak the Paramount Pictures logo is inspired by and yes – the water really is that blue.

What’s included in a tour to Laguna Paron and what to expect:

All tours to Laguna Paron are the same. You’ll be picked up from your hotel or hostel around 8 AM and then have a 3 hour drive in a van stopping once in Carhuaz, where you’ll have 25 minutes to grab snacks and try the famed ice cream in town. From there, the van will drop you off directly at the base of Lake Paron.

The view is spectacular just from the bottom, but you’ll have 2 hours to further explore the area. Some options are hiking 30 minutes up to the mirador, walking around the lake, and even taking a kayak or rowboat on the water for an extra S/10-20 ($3 – 5 USD). I suggest starting with the mirador to ensure you get that panoramic view and saving any extra time for further activities.

Laguna Paron

How difficult is a tour to Laguna Paron?

In terms of physical difficulty, not difficult at all. You’ll be dropped off at the base of the lake, so the only hiking you need to do is walking 30 minutes up to the optional mirador.

How long is a tour to Laguna Paron?

In total, the whole trip should be about 9-10 hours , pick-up at 8 AM and arriving back in Huaraz around 5 or 6 PM. While the highlight of the trip is obviously the incredible lake views, the majority of your time will be spent in a car so be prepared by having podcasts, movies, music, and/or a book downloaded for the ride.

Where to book a tour to Laguna Paron:

I recommend  booking through Krusty Travel Hostel which usually has the best prices and is a good place to stay as well. If they’re not offering it at the time, American Tours and Golden Expeditions have competitive prices, as well.

Price:   A tour to Lake Paron is S/50 ( $12 USD) per person + an entrance fee to the park for S/5 ( $1.5 USD).

4. Witness Pastoruri Glacier

Once the highlight of visiting Huaraz back in the day, Pastoruri Glacier is sadly melting due to global warming. But before it goes, it may be worth a visit if you’ve never seen a glacier up close and want another day trip with little physical challenge to acclimate.

The glacier itself sits at 5,000 meters and is one of the few glaciers left in the tropical region of South America. In my honest opinion, it was much smaller than seen in past photos but still interesting to see up-close (however it will become less impressive as time goes on, unfortunately). The tour also helped prepare my body for high elevation, and the drive was stunning. In fact, the road to Pastoruri Glacier is one of the highest paved roads in the world.

Pastoruri Glacier in Peru

What’s included in a tour to Pastoruri Glacier and what to expect:

A day trip to Pastoruri Glacier includes pick-up from your hotel at 9 AM and a 3 hour drive to the glacier trail. Along the way, you’ll stop at a restaurant for a quick cup of tea and to make a reservation for lunch later, followed by two separate viewpoints along the road for a picture, then finally make it to the glacier.

From the parking lot, you’ll walk along a paved trail about 30 minutes up to the glacier. While the trail is not technically difficult at all, the altitude leaves you pretty winded so just take your time.

You’ll have about 2 hours to explore the glacier (including the walk there and back) and then head back to Huaraz, stopping one last time at that same restaurant for a late lunch before arriving back in Huaraz at 5 or 6 PM.

How long is a tour to Pastoruri Glacier?

In total, the trip is about 8 hours, from 9 AM – 5 PM.

How difficult is a tour to Pastoruri Glacier?

Not too difficult. It’s about a 30 minute walk to the glacier, which is somewhat uphill but nothing crazy. You will be out of breath because of the sheer height of the area, but with patience almost anyone could do it.

Where to book a tour to Pastoruri Glacier:

I recommend   booking through Krusty Travel Hostel which usually has the best prices and is a good place to stay as well.  If they’re not offering it at the time, American Tours and Golden Expeditions have competitive prices, as well.

Price:   A day trip to Pastoruri Glacier costs about S/35 – 45 ($9 – 12 USD) + an entrance fee to the park which is about S/30 ($8 USD).

5. Hike to Laguna 69

This is the day trip that draws most tourists to Huaraz these days, the famous Laguna 69.  Sitting at 4,600 meters is a crystal blue lake reflecting the icy peak of Chakrarahu. Visitors will walk through a vast valley passing cows feeding on grass, and trudge up two ascents past a waterfall, Laguna Lago and then finally making it to Laguna 69.

Thanks to social media, this lake has gone absolutely viral and 100’s of tourists visit everyday. But despite being tainted in over-popularity I still highly, highly recommend visiting Laguna 69. Not only is it a staple to Huaraz, but a practical way to acclimate for longer treks because of the elevation and the double ascents to get your stamina working.

Solo female traveler posing at Laguna 69 in Huaraz Peru

What’s included in a tour to Laguna 69 and what to expect:

A tour to Laguna 69 includes pick-up at your hotel or hostel at 4:30 or 5 AM, transport to and from the lake, and a licensed guide.

The drive to and from the lake is a long one, about 3 hours one way without stops. However, in the morning along the way you’ll actually make two stops: one for breakfast (which you’ll pay for separately), and one nearly at the trailhead at Laguna Llanganuco to take a quick picture.

You’ll start hiking at about 9/10 AM and have about 6 hours to complete the trail. To stay on track, the guides will recommend that if you are not at the lake by 1 PM you’ll need to turn back regardless to head for the bus so that the group leaves by 3 PM for Huaraz.

Trail Length, Difficulty & Details of Laguna 69

Laguna 69 is a 14 km (or 8.6 miles) in and out trail that begins with a walk through a valley, a first ascent of switch-backs, another flat walk, and then another final switch-back ascent to the lake.

While people of varying physical abilities complete this day hike, it’s definitely not a walk in the park. Because of the altitude & length it can be tough so it’s best to come prepared and have at least a day or two to acclimate in Huaraz. During the trail, it’s important to take it slow, listen to your body, and drink lots of water. If you’re worried about altitude, it’s worth taking medication beforehand as well – in fact, I recommend it.

Where to book a tour to Laguna 69:

I recommend   booking through Krusty Travel Hostel which usually has the best prices and is a good place to stay as well.

A tour to Laguna 69 is about S/50 ($12 USD) + the entrance fee to Huascaran National Park for S/30 ($8 USD). If you plan to do more activities in the park soon after, there’s also a 3 day pass for S/60 ( $15 USD) and a month pass for S/150 (~$38 USD).

6. Kayak at Laguna Llanganuco

If you’re not feeling up to the challenge of Laguna 69, you can still make it up that way to Laguna Llanganuco where you can kayak and enjoy the vast, turquoise lake. In all honesty, if you’re doing Laguna 69 I don’t think it’s worth it to come all this way again for Llanganuco, however this is a great option for those with limited physical ability who still want to enjoy the outdoors or for those traveling with kids.

Where to book a tour to Laguna Llanganuco?

I recommend   booking through Krusty Travel Hostel which usually has the best prices and is a good place to stay as well. If they’re not offering it at the time, a number of tour groups in town are safe to go with, all of them offering a similar tour so just go with the best price.

7. Ice Climbing Mateo Summit

On the other end of the spectrum, a challenging and rewarding day trip is ice climbing to summit Nevado Mateo. If you’ve ever wanted to summit a mountain, this is a great opportunity because as far as summits go, it’s minimal effort since it begins high up and therefore can be done in only a day. But even still, it’s a brag-worthy activity to reach the top of this 5,150 meters (16,896 feet) mountain peak plus you’ll have the opportunity to try ice climbing with ice axes, a harness, and all.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Steven Guio photographer 🇵🇪 (@stvn.guio)

What’s included in a tour to Mateo and what to expect:

A tour to Nevado Mateo Summit should include all the equipment needed for an ice climb, so no need to rent gear. Get some sleep the night before, because this is an early tour with pick-up from your hotel or hostel at 3:00 AM. The drive to the trailhead is about 2 hours, so you’ll start climbing around 5/5:30 AM.

The climb itself is 3 km/1.8 miles with a 400 meter/1,300 feet elevation gain and will take about 2 hours to go up. Because of the altitude, expect to be walking very slow which is completely normal. In total, the trip should be about 9 hours so you’ll return to Huaraz mid-day.

Where to book Mateo ice climbing:

I suggest booking through Krusty Travel Hostel which typically has the best prices, provides high quality gear and is a good place to stay making it a convenient option especially when being picked up at 3 AM.  The day before the climb they’ll also have you try on boots and make sure you’re ready to go.

Ice-climbing Nevado Mateo Summit is about S/200 ($50 USD) + the entrance fee to Huascaran National Park for S/30 ($8 USD). If you plan to do more activities in the national park soon after, there’s also a 3 day pass for S/60 ($15 USD) and a month pass for S/150 ($38 USD).

8. The Santa Cruz Trek

Out of everything to do in Huaraz, without reservations I cannot recommend the Santa Cruz trek enough. During this 4 day trek you’ll walk through vast valleys, through blooming meadows, up to a polar lake, climb to Punta Union pass, and camp under the stars.

Santa Cruz camping

Beyond the impressive scenery, Santa Cruz is perfect for many tourists for a variety of reasons: it’s super affordable, it’s not too long, and it’s ideal for first-time trekkers! While it comes with some physical challenges, I think it’s totally doable for the average able person.

I ended up doing this hike in preparation for the Huayhuash trek, and while it wasn’t my main focus coming to Huaraz it ended up being a major highlight. Santa Cruz was just challenging enough to be rewarding, but not so demanding that I couldn’t enjoy the moments in nature, feeling the mountain breeze and photographing memories. A major bonus was enjoying it all with two other solo female travelers I met, joking our way through cold nights in the tent and long days walking.

Besides the famed Huayhuash trek (read below), which may not be for everyone, Santa Cruz is one of the best things you can do in Huaraz, so be sure to make room in your Peru itinerary!

Distance, Difficulty & Details of the Santa Cruz Trek:

The Santa Cruz trek is 4 days and 3 nights hiking trail through the Cordillera Blanca that covers about 50 km (32 miles) and reaches the highest elevation of 4,750 meters (15,583 feet) at Punto Union Pass.

The map of the trek is shown below on AllTrails (which is roughly accurate) but when you discuss with tour operators they should give you a map and explain the hiking details of each day.

What to Expect from the Santa Cruz Trek: what’s included, camping conditions, weather, etc:

Most tour operators include the same: a licensed guide with a first-aid kit, camping equipment including tents, sleeping mats, and sleeping bags, all of your meals provided (except for the first breakfast at a homestay), transportation, and mules to carry a bag with your belongings.

What’s not included is any clothing, hiking poles, hiking boots, travel insurance and a water bottle – although water is provided. Additionally, most tours don’t include the Huascaran National Park entrance fee which is S/30 ($8 USD).

In terms of weather …you can definitely expect pretty cold nights dropping to or below freezing. During the day, the weather can vary between sun and heat, or clouds and maybe rain. This will vary depending on season, elevation, and just luck.

As for camping, the conditions are pretty simple for Santa Cruz: just you, a sleeping bag and a tent. No fires are allowed and the Santa Cruz campsites do not offer any amenities like toilets or a shower.

If you’re not used to camping like this, it will probably be the most rough part of the trip. But it’s only 4 days and *hopefully* you get used to it. My biggest recommendations are to bring plenty of layers to stay warm, something to serve as a comfortable pillow, maybe another item to cushion your hips from the ground, toilet paper and a plastic bag to toss trash, and wet wipes to clean yourself.

Santa Cruz trek

Where to Book the Santa Cruz Trek:

The Santa Cruz trek is available from a number of tour operators in Huaraz but I found the cheapest option was through Krusty Hostel who uses Huayhuash Expeditions. They were professional, provided a duffle bag for my things, easy to book with and were the most affordable compared to other tour groups. They’re also  a comfortable B&B so it’s convenient to book a night’s stay there before and after your trek while they hold onto your remaining luggage.

Price of Santa Cruz Trek:

Booking through Krusty Hostel, the Santa Cruz trek was S/600, roughly $150 USD and the best price you can find in Huaraz. Another guy in my tour booked elsewhere and paid 200 soles more with nothing extra provided (if anything, less because he wasn’t provided a duffle bag).

9. The Huayhuash Trek

Named one of the 10 most beautiful treks in the world, the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit should absolutely be on your bucket list. While it’s not for the faint of heart, the magnificent views of snow-capped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, rocky terrain, and mind-blowing views pay off all the challenges of the trail. Over 5-12 days you’ll push your strength and stretch your stamina for one of the most rewarding and immersive adventures through the Andes Mountains.

Cordillera Huayhuash trek

Full disclosure, the Huayhuash circuit is a difficult one, and for many reasons: not only trail distance, but for the high altitudes and mental stamina to span over the whole trip. About every day is a mountain pass, and the entire trip is over 4,000 meters, the highest reaching 5050 m / 16 568 ft. Weather can be unpredictable up there, and you may need to hike or sleep through hail or even snow. What’s more, how your body reacts to these conditions – especially the altitude – can also be challenging.

On the other hand, as long as you have the proper gear, the mental fortitude, are properly acclimated, and in good enough physical condition, the hike itself really isn’t that technical. Just one foot in front of the other!

So if you’re up to the challenge, I can surely tell you Huayhuash will be an adventure of your lifetime.

Distance, Difficulty & Details of the Huayhuash Trek:

The traditional Huayhuash circuit is considered difficult and can be done in 8-12 days. The most popular route is 8 days, which is what I did and what I’ll speak about.

During the 8 days Huayhuash Circuit you’ll hike about 130 km/80 miles and reach elevations as high as 5,050 m / 16 568 ft. Unlike the Santa Cruz trek which centers around one mountain pass, during Huayhuash you’ll do about one mountain pass every day which makes it a much more demanding trek.

The map of the circuit is shown below on AllTrails (which is roughly accurate) but when you discuss with tour operators they should give you a map and explain the hiking details of each day since there can be slight variations.

What to Expect from the Huayhuash Trek: what’s included, camping conditions, weather, etc:

Most tour operators include the same for the Huayhuash trek: a licensed guide with a first-aid kit, camping equipment including tents, sleeping mats, and sleeping bags, all of your meals provided (except for the first lunch at the restaurant in Llamac), all transportation, and mules to carry a bag with your belongings. Some tours (like with Krusty Hostel/Huayhuash Expedition) will also include the park entrance fee and an emergency horse to ride in case.

What’s not included is any clothing, hiking poles, hiking boots, personal items, travel insurance and a water bottle – although water is provided.

In terms of weather , expect it all. At night and in the morning you can guarantee it’s going to be frigid, with temperatures at or below freezing. During the day you can guarantee you’ll have everything from hot, to cloudy, to cold, to hail, and maybe even a snow storm (if you’re lucky like me…). My group joked that every day in our day packs we needed clothes for all seasons, and the story of our lives was stripping and adding layers every other hour.

As you can imagine,  this is no luxury stay. You’ll be camping in tents throughout the trip except for one day where a hostel is optional. Fortunately, unlike the Santa Cruz trek there were toilets at every campsite. Not always the best, but they did provide some privacy. Halfway through the trek, we also camped in a village where a shower was available and if you wanted to pay extra, this is where you could stay in a hostel.

Where to Book the Huayhuash Trek:

I’ve recommended Krusty Hostel to book all tours throughout this blog post, but for Huayhuash I really, really recommend it. I shopped around a lot for the Huayhuash trek in Huaraz and Krusty Hostel offered the lowest possible price at S/1500 ($390 USD). I was extremely pleased with the gear, my guide, the group, and the entire experience. They provided a spacious duffle bag so you don’t have to pick and choose with fresh layers, the guide was encouraging and hilarious, an emergency horse and the entrance fee were included, and it’s a popular place to book the trek so I was paired with the best group of fellow backpackers I could have possible asked for, especially going into it not knowing a soul.

Price of the Huayhuash Trek:

When booked through Krusty Hostel , it’s S/1500 ($390 USD) for 8 days. Everywhere else in Huaraz who I spoke to was charging anywhere from S/1700 – 2500 a lot of times depending on group size.

10. Take a self-care day and get a massage

After all that hiking, you deserve a self-care day – my final recommendation of things to do in Huaraz. In between my Santa Cruz and Huayhuash trek I treated myself to a full-body 1 hour massage at Centro de Masajes Huaraz . It was S/80 ($20 USD) and worth every penny after long days of pushing my body to its limit.

WHERE TO BOOK TOURS IN HUARAZ

As mentioned already, I most recommend booking all tours through Krusty Hostel who works with Huayhuash Expeditions for longer treks. In my experience they always had the best prices and provided high quality gear.

Once I discovered Krusty, they were my go to.  Throughout Huaraz you’ll see ‘TOURS’ signs everywhere and are welcome to shop around. However, after booking a few different tours myself with different groups I found that they all offer the exact same packages (sometime even combining groups) and service was never anything to write home about; therefore the only thing that really mattered was price. Once I discovered Krusty had the best prices, it saved me time and energy.

How far in advance do you need to book tours?

For day tours you typically don’t need to book anything more than 1-2 days in advance unless it’s a holiday. However for activities leaving early morning between 3- 5 AM, try to add a time cushion the day before.

For a longer trek such as Santa Cruz or Huayhuash you might want to secure your spot much earlier, just in case. As soon as you arrive in Huaraz or after you’ve done your first hike I would book these. Even still though, I booked Santa Cruz one day before leaving and Huayhuash two days before.

WHERE TO RENT AND BUY GEAR IN HUARAZ

If you’re looking for hiking clothes , you can find everything from windbreaker jackets, winter coats, hiking pants, base layers and more at a number of outdoor apparel stores in Huaraz on the main street. Many sell high-quality brands such as Patagonia, Cotopaxi, Columbia, etc. However don’t expect lower prices, you’ll find about the same name-brand prices you’d find in the U.S.

For those on a budget or backpackers who only need a quick, cheap solution for a one-time trek, there are also plenty of places where you can buy clothing second-hand for a fraction of the cost. On the same street as the Central Market just behind the main street, you’ll find such stores to shop around. I bought a NorthFace windbreaker jacket for about $25 USD and two breathable sweat proof t-shirts for $7 each.

If you’re looking to rent gear or equipment such as hiking poles, tents, sleeping bags, or even winter coats then I recommend Mont Blanc Trekking & Climbing .

WHERE TO STAY IN HUARAZ

For the backpackers and budget travelers, I recommend staying at Krusty Hostel . It’s nothing fancy, but I found this B&B a really comfortable stay and a bang for your buck. The dorm rooms are about $8 USD a night, and have larger twin beds that are not bunks which is a major plus. Private rooms are also available for about $20 USD. The showers are always hot, breakfast is included, there’s a rooftop, fast wifi, and it’s where I recommend booking tours from as well.

Mid-Range $$-$$$

If you’re looking for a step up in accommodation from the broke backpacker budget, try Selina . They have both comfy dorm rooms and privates available at their beautiful courtyard stay which also features a spacious kitchen for cooking, several rooftop balconies, a cowork space, yoga studio, and movie theater. Note, they do host events late into the night on weekends, so if you have an early wake-up call be aware there will be loud music Friday’s & Saturday’s. However, if you’re the party hard and still wake-up and hike type, this is for you. Otherwise, during the week it’s pretty chill.

Overall, most stays in Huaraz will be very much homestay/lodge style; you won’t find massive chain hotels in this mountain city. However, since most of your time in Huaraz will be spent in the mountains anyways, you don’t really need anything too fancy. The most important things to have wherever you choose is a hot shower, warm blankets, and in relative proximity to the main square to book tours, etc.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK IN HUARAZ

Andino cafe .

Andino has fantastic food at all hours of the day but I especially loved the Andino breakfast which included homemade bread, fresh juice, a nicely brewed Americano, perfectly scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, pico de gallo, and a spicy mango salsa. It also has great wifi if you want to stay and chill – although there are no outlets which may shorten your stay.

This is a great hangout spot if you’re having a slow day while acclimating, just have some downtime or are looking for a cafe with good wifi to work from. The only thing, I’ll admit, is the food was not anything special to me. Not bad at all, but not special (I came for the atmosphere) – although the pancakes are impeccable. You can also find a lot of guide books and information about trekking here.

Paulino’s Indian Cuisine

If you love indian food and are craving something besides Peruvian food, I highly recommend Paulino’s. For a mountain town in Peru it was surprisingly pretty decent indian food and the hearty meal I always needed after trekking. In fact, I went about 3 times and thought about it through my whole Huayhuash trek!

Cantuu Cafe

Cantuu is a small vegan cafe that serves breakfast items, hamburgers, sandwiches, pizzas and other items. Although I’m not vegan, I loved this little spot as a place to grab a coffee, piece of cake or avocado toast and chill. They also have great wifi!

If you’re looking for a quick and affordable lunch, Pashta has good sandwiches made with quality bread for around S/9 ($3 USD).

For the Americans or others craving some soul food, Archies is your place. There was one day I had a mean craving for fried chicken and stumbled upon Archies and it did the job with a huge crispy portion accompanied with ranch and a spicy sauce.

This is a good all-rounder restaurant with various options to suit a large group. They also have great cocktails, I recommend the various pisco sours!

Wintata Karaoke

I didn’t party much in Huaraz, but out of the two nights that I did – this was my favorite spot! After trekking Huayhuash my entire group celebrated by getting drunk and having a night of karaoke. Highly recommend ending your trip on this note.

WHERE TO BUY GROCERIES IN HUARAZ

Whether you’re cooking a lot in Huaraz or looking for somewhere to buy food/snacks for trekking, you can find everything you need at the local grocery store known as Trujillo . They’re all over Huaraz.

Additionally, there’s a local market known as Mercado Central de Huaraz where you can also find fresh produce. Keep in mind if you plan to do multi-day trekking on your own, you won’t find any dehydrated food in Huaraz and will need to bring it yourself either from Lima or your home country.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY IN HUARAZ?

This totally depends on what activities you plan on doing and if you want to do multi-day treks like Santa Cruz or Huayhuash. To figure out how long you should stay, decide which activities you want to do, tack on 2-3 days to acclimate if coming from sea level, and then consider any rest days you want to have in between activities.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT HUARAZ?

The best time to visit Huaraz is from May to September. This falls during Peru’s winter but it’s also dry season which means you’ll mostly avoid rain during hiking.

Normally traveling outside of a peak season can be beneficial because it means less people and lower prices, but in this case I would not recommend it. I mean why visit the mountains anytime outside of mountain season? It would be a shame to miss out on activities because conditions are bad or hike a long way just for the views to be covered in fog or rain. My advice: stick to May – September.

IS HUARAZ A GOOD PLACE FOR SOLO TRAVELERS?

Yes!! Actually as far as outdoor-activity heavy destinations go, it’s a great solo traveler destination! Huaraz is safe, there are many other travelers to meet, and it’s not only easy but standard to join a tour group for most of the hikes. As a solo traveler myself, I met fantastic people on every single hike/trek and also made lots of friends at my hostels.

IS HUARAZ SAFE?

The city itself is considered very safe and I personally ran into no issues – not even cat-calling. However, that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down; as always use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. When trekking, especially if on your own, make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment, follow the path and make sure you know the way.

Travel insurance is always a must, but especially during your trip to Peru where it’s likely you’re doing physical, outdoor activities and have many reservations at risk if any plans change. Injury and cancellations happen, it’s goo to have peace of mind!

My most recommended travel insurance is World Nomads which is designed and made specifically for adventurous backpackers.

→ Learn more about World Nomads Travel Insurance coverage here

However, if you’re on a budget I  suggest Safety Wing asa cheaper alternative for just travel medical emergencies.

I’ve read some very bad reviews about the gear and the food when doing the Hauyhaush trek with Krystyna Tours I’m a bit nervous to book with them

You mean Krusty travel? The gear was totally fine in my experience and the food albeit repetitive, was good to me and considering we were remote for 8 days!

Hi Caroline, my boyfriend and I are in Huaraz now and are trying to decide between Santa Cruz and Huayhuash which is proving incredibly difficult Did you have a clear favourite? Or which would you recommend if you absolutely had to chose one. For reference – we are both pretty fit and enjoy hiking and will be heading to Patagonia later in the year.

Hi Lucina, sorry for the late reply I hope you had an amazing time in Huaraz! For the sake of other’s visiting this blog post, I want to answer this question.

Both Santa Cruz and Huayhuash are beautiful and there’s pros/cons to both. Santa Cruz is shorter, cheaper, and involves more hiking through the valley. It is still a challenge as you’re a high altitude, but the whole trek is kind of working up to one mountain pass and down the other side. I will say, the distances though per day are pretty long even if not always up hill, it’s a lot of walking. But absolutely beautiful!!

Huayhuash on the other hand is 8 days, more expensive, and involves a mountain pass every day and is considered much more challenging, although the days hiking ended earlier than Santa Cruz (shorter distances). I will say the views are absolutely epic, and if this is your deciding factor then I would choose Huayhuash. Not to say Santa Cruz isn’t also beautiful and a really fun trek, but Huayhuash is more iconic in my opinion.

Both have something different to offer though, and I really enjoyed both treks.

Hi Caroline, Thanks for the informative blog! I am looking into doing the Santa Cruz hike, but will be limited in time so would like to book ahead wherever possible. The bit of information that I cannot find in your blog is if any of the recommended tours provide English speaking guides. As a solo female traveler that doesn’t speak any Spanish this is kind of high on my wish list. Thanks!

Hi Marije! Many companies provide an English-speaking guide, in fact the company I went through that I recommend here in this post spoke English. Krusty Hostel using Huayhuash Expeditions. I believe the Selina hostel also works with English speaking guides.

trujillo huaraz movil tours

Huaraz is a large town in the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru 's Central Sierra .

Understand [ edit ]

Huaraz stands tall at 3100m; travellers from Lima might need a day or two to acclimatize to the change in atmosphere. See Altitude sickness for advice and more information.

July is a good time to visit the region; the temperature is perfect for walking and the sky is free from clouds and rain. It's also a good time as the July period has many of Peru's annual event celebration dates. The town puts on a tremendous night of entertainment each year for most of the days, featuring live music and more. Well worth a look if you are in the region.

A town of 100,000, it blends a mix of modern and native culture. The town has many markets and shops catering to tourist needs and local needs. The food markets are especially interesting and are a great starting point for getting supplies for expeditions. Be sure to shop about before purchasing/hiring (especially for mountaineering gear) as often a better price can be found elsewhere with a bit of bargaining.

The town has many places offering cheap internet access; although a bit slow, the connection is usually reliable. The town has a big post office and a few banks. Huaraz also has a mix of old and new restaurants offering a variety of dishes. Cuy (guinea pig) is a regional dish; perhaps something to say one has tried but not something to make a diet of! There are a few night clubs and many bars open late. Common sense would advise people not to travel alone at night, but one feels safe in the city where the locals were very willing to help out where possible. Like many places in Peru, it's not wise to take much money with you at any one time if you can possibly avoid it.

By bus [ edit ].

Huaraz is approximately 8 hours coach drive from Lima ; it's simple and a reasonably cheap and reliable service. Movil Tours, Ormeño, Cruz del Sur and CIAL are most frequently recommended bus companies.

When you arrive you will find out that ´captadores´ are trying to bring you to lowly recommendated hostels and places. They spread bad words about the hostel you are willing to go to. Do not believe any of these popular phrases like: that hostel is always full, that hostel is far away. Especially at Cruz del Sur it is tough to leave. These 'captadores' get commission for each night you stay at the place that they recommend.

There are several daily buses to and from Chimbote & Trujillo . Movil Tours & Transportes Linea [dead link] are the best (US$14, 7 hours to Trujillo), followed by Chinchaysuyo & Comite 14, all of which only travel by night, & continue to Trujillo. All night buses travel on the tar sealed road from Huaraz to Pativilca ( Caral is near there) to the Panamerican Highway, midway between Trujillo & Lima.

Transportes Linea [dead link] , America Express & others run from Trujillo from 06:00 or earlier to catch the 8-8.30AM bus of Turismo Huaraz & Yungay Express from Huaraz via Caraz & the spectacular Cañon del Pato. It's a rough 8-hour bus ride, the buses are basic for the unsealed road (Caraz to Chimbote) and may be overcrowded between Caraz & Huaraz. The views are stunning. Price is around S/25 ( soles ). If you have your own vehicle, obtain permission (and confirmation of entrance times if maintenance is in progress) from Proyecto Chavimochic in Trujillo (Telefax +51 44 272286) or Viru to leave the Panam (485 km north of Lima) via the well kept Brasileiros maintenance road alongside the canal to the north bank of the Santa River to Cañon del Pato. It is possible to cover Trujillo to Caraz in 5 hours (and photo stops) on this straighter, smoother road. Almost 40 tunnels are large enough for all but the largest tourist buses.

There are also day buses between Huaraz & Chimbote via the Callan Pass, Pariacoto & Casma (for Sechin ). Longer, rougher & not quite as visually stunning.

Every 20 minutes or so combis leave Huaraz for Caraz visiting Carhuaz and Yungay on the way.

In Huaraz, taxis are cheap and fast for getting about the town.

Be wary of dubious taxi drivers and cabs. Peru does have a problem with taxis in some places, and tourists have been known to be mugged or assaulted in them. Women should be careful not to travel alone, especially in taxis and especially at night. Huaraz is, however, a comparatively safe city — for men and women — and is easily maneuvered by the seasoned traveller, particularly those who can speak Spanish. However, just as in any part of Peru, staying aware of your surroundings and avoiding potentially dodgy situations is advised.

Also if you need to rent a car to go out of the city, are a variety of companies that make this service, the most prominent being Andes Renta Car Huaraz . www.archuaraz.com You can contact trough email [email protected] or call +51 43422423 or 943626780 in order to get information about the cars, trucks, prices, etc. Andean Rent a Car offers a good service with a drivers that know the routes.

See [ edit ]

  • Archeological Sites . Within walking distance of Huaraz is the Wari ruin of Wilcawain. Monumento Nacional Wilcahuaín is a small Wari tuin that dates bakes to 600 to 900 AD. This temple complex is virtually undamaged, providing a unique opportunity to see a complete pre-Columbian building in Peru. It is an imitation of the temple at Chavín, in the Tiahuanaco style. Wilcahuaín means 'grandson's house' in Quechua. The ruin was originally filled with mummies who were kept dry by using a sophisticated ventilation system. It is not only interesting in itself but can be visited on a great acclimatization hike that leaves right from town. It is easiest to take a combi there (uphill) and walk back via an old Incan trail (approximately 2 hours).

Huaraz is also the departure point for tours to see Chavín de Huántar , the center of a cultural and artistic revolution in Peru that took place between 600 and 300 BCE. Museums in Huaraz contain many fine examples of Chavin sculpture and older Cupinisque pottery.

  • Puya Raimondi . Puya Raimondi are the biggest pineapple (bromeliad) plants of the world. They bloom with 50-75 years once for 9 months with 8,000-10,000 niches and a flower altitude of up to 10 m height, then they die. They grow between 3500 and 4700 m altitude.
  • The Museo Regional de Ancash , The Museo Regional de Ancash houses the largest collection of ancient stone sculptures in South America. It gives information about all the cultures that have inhabited the Cordillera Blanca region. It is small but interesting, it has a few mummies, some trepanned skulls (an ancient form of surgery involving cutting into the skull) and a garden of stone monoliths from the Recuay culture (400 BC to AD 600) and the Wari culture (AD 600 to 1000). A pottery collection, textiles, and metal works cover the Wari, Chimú, and Inca cultures.

Do [ edit ]

Find the practical map guide in most of the bars or laundries.

  • Trekking - The region is a trekkers paradise; it features breath taking views and an escape from the hive of people seen in other famed trekking locations like the Inca trail. Although one could do it on ones own, it's advisable to get a guide and run it through a specialist company. There are many companies offering these services. The House of Guides (Casa de Guías) offers professional free information, and maps for a price. They have a check in/check out book which it's advisable to sign, especially if travelling without a guide.
  • Explore Huascarán National Park : Visit nearby Laguna Churup, Laguna 69 , Laguna Parón or complete the challenging, multi-day Santa Cruz Trek .
  • A homestay in Vicos or Humacchuco , When you are interested in some alternative form of spending your trip in the region of Huaraz it is a very good idea to do a homestay in Vicos or Humacchuco. Vicos (1 hour from Huaraz) is an authentic rural community, which gives visitors the opportunity to learn about its Andean culture, livingin harmony with its environment. Vicos has seven guest houses next to the houses of host families who will assist you during all the activities. Possible activities are; helping the family with theirdaily activities like baking bread, harvesting honey, fishing or grazing with the animals, helping the family on their farming lands, visiting local craftsman, hiking through the fields while visiting the ruins of the Huari and Recuay while learning about medicinal plants, or hiking for a full day to high-altitude lakes and glaciers and enjoying the views with the Cordillera Blanca at the background. Humacchuco is another community which is a little bit farther away (2 hours from Huaraz). Humacchuco has six guest houses next to the houses of host families like in Vicos. Also here it is possible to help the families with their daily activities and learn about their culture. Besides this Humacchuco also offers wonderful hikings to Lake Llanganuco, Lake 69, Maria Joséfa and a hike to the valley of Huaytapallana. To organize a homestay in Humacchuco you can either contact the Mountain Institute in Huaraz or call one of the families. You will find a phone number on the website [dead link] . Note that only the second one is up to date for now, but they plan to update the website soon. In case you try to contact them via e-mail, it might take some time until they answer as there isn't any internet in the village. It would be good if you spoke some Spanish, and if not, organize a translator as the families don't speak English. You get to see the main sights in the Huascarán National Park and share the daily life of rural Andean families.
  • Visit parks and squares , When the weather is good visit one of the nice squares ( Plaza de Armas , Plaza de Belen ) or parks ( Park at Iglesia San Francisco ). Just sit down, enjoy the nice weather with a good book or just to watch people.
  • -9.59696 -77.53169 1 Laguna Wilcacocha . Although the lake is little more than a weed-choked pond, the ease of access makes this a popular acclimatization hike. Take a 15 min collectivo, letter E or number 10 , from Mercado Central on the corner of Hualcan Street and Raimondi (S/1.5). Ask to stop in Chiwipampa, "Puente Santa Cruz". From the bridge, the trail is 3.2 km (2.0 mi) and 500 m (1,600 ft) of elevation to the lake and is marked by blue arrows. The laguna is very small, but there are good views of the Cordillera Blanca range. 1½-2 hr of walking to the lake, 1 hr to get down. ( updated Apr 2019 )
  • Laguna Antacocha , same trip as laguna Wilcacocha, but a bit further (30 min, about S/2.5, get down just before to enter Recuay).
  • -9.5358 -77.5151 2 Mirador de Rataquena . A 45 min walk to a lookout above the city. The trail starts near the cemetery and continues past the mirador but there have been cases of robbery so don't bring valuables. ( updated Apr 2019 )
  • Go to the foot of Huascaran , the biggest mountain in Peru, 6768 m. Take a combi to Mancos (S/5), then to Musho (S/2.5) where the path begins. But there are several ways and no indication, so don't go if you haven't good information or a guide. About 4 hr to go to the Refugio, and 2 hr more to the first snow.
  • Go to the Therms of Monterrey , directly in combi from Fitzcarrald street (S/1). Or walk from Wilkawain's ruins (by combi, S/1.30, 20 min), by the football place, go up the steps then follow straight, 1½ hr. You have a nice view on Huascaran. The entrance to the therms is S/3.50, for the public swimming pool or private bathtub. Warm !
  • A good place to see is Hatun Machay or stone forest, very impressive. Some climbers come there and sleep in the Refugio (30 S/night) or in their tents (20 S/night). You can rent material in Huaraz. Bring your food and water. Get a combi to Catac (3,5 S) then a taxi collectivo to kilometer 131 (5 S) direction Conococha, where the path begins. Walk up 2h, easy. At the end you have to choose, take left. You have to pay 5 S the entrance for one single day. Get down 1h30, you can try hitch hiking to come back.

Buy [ edit ]

At the Plaza de Armas there is an Artesania Market with a broad offer of nice souvenirs, bags, jewelry and clothing. Definitely worth a visit. Furthermore, there are some nice shops on the Av. Luzuriaga as well. The big market with food and a lot of small shops selling everything you can think of is situated at a street which goes parallel to the Av. Luzuriaga.

Eat [ edit ]

  • Mercado central . On the second floor you can indulge in a true Peruvian set meal of soup, rice and chicken and limonade. All for S/2.50. The first floor is good for stocking up for your trek. Second stair, try the Comedor vegetariano .
  • Try a delicious and cheap (S/5) Ceviche in the restaurant Delfin , Gabino Uribe street near from the main plaza.
  • A S/10 buffet to have lunch in the nice Cafe 13 Buhos , near from the Casa de guias.
  • Tasty ice cream in Samuel's (S/1.5 the cornet), Luzurinaga street.
  • Chifas , there are several in town. Their dishes are cheap and feed two. And in contrast to Peruvian cuisine they tend to sneak in some veggies. Chifa is a blend of Chinese and Peruvian fare, especially popular in Lima but widely available throughout the country for cheap. Buyer beware. Just make sure it's hot!!
  • La Brasa Roja , Luzuriaga 919. Great place for meat lovers, highly recommended (and frequented) by locals. Slightly upscale. The roasted chicken (S/9.50) and the burgers (S/10) are best value for money. Large portions.
  • Fuente de Salud . Very cheap, very tasty vegetarian food. Highly recommended for vegetarians and those who are feeling the effects of traveller's diarrhea.
  • Siam de los Andes . A traditional Thai restaurant in the middle of small-town Peru, serves up delicious curry and stir fry dishes. S/15-50 per meal.
  • Creperie Patrick , Av. Luzurriaga 422. A well-known restaurant that serves up many different styles of sweet or savory crêpes, Creperie Patrick is also known to be relatively expensive: S/25-50 per meal.
  • Mi Chef Kristof , Parque del Periodista (through the last passage on the right side of the first block of Av. Luzuriaga going north from the Plaza de Armas). Great restaurant where Chef Kristof will prepare amazing meals for you. The Peppersteak and the homemade pastas are a little bit more expensive than elsewhere in town but are a real treat.
  • Jirón José Olaya , Jirón José Olaya is the only street that remained intact through Huaraz' various earthquakes. It gives a good indication of what the town once looked like. On Sundays there is a street market where the local population sells regional foods. Sit down at one of the little “restaurants” and enjoy your Picante de Cuy.
  • Café Andes , José Antonio de Sucre 817 ( one and half block up/east from plaza ). This café almost delivers to its slogan, "barato y bueno," by serving delicious cakes for S/2-4 per piece. Only avoid ordering coffee as you will get hot water and coffee concentrate.
  • El Rincon de Jose , Jr. Jose de la Mar . Quick, friendly, tasty, cheap! S/6 . ( updated Aug 2017 )

Drink [ edit ]

There are several bars clustered around José de la Mar and Cajamarca to still your thirst.

  • El Tambo , 2 blocks from Plaza Ginebra. Popular weekend club (slow on Thursday) that plays mostly salsa with short sets of house, reggaeton, and American music. It has a tree and wood theme.
  • Cafe Andino , 2 blocks from the Plaza de Armas, closed Mondays and January/February. Delicious espresso and other coffee beverages. Can buy beans too. Excellent selection of books to borrow (with deposit), and good magazine selection to peruse while there. Loud, familiar music (Marley, Grateful Dead). Friendly, accommodating staff. Great atmosphere. Free WiFi. Expensive, but good and healthy gringo food.
  • California Café , Jr. 28 de Julio, 568. Café with a big book exchange, also doubles as library. The Californian owner organizes ultimate frisbee matches every Friday. Just drop in at around 13:30 (Dry Season, April–November) or 10:00 (Rainy Season, December–March) if you're interested. One of the house specialties is their mixed fruit smoothie, called Surtido. This cafe also serves roasts its own coffees and is an ideal spot to hang for a few hours when first getting into town. Try their sandwiches, made to order with lots of variety. Also has free WiFi.
  • 13 Buhos Bar , Jose de la Mar & Simon Bolivar ( 2nd floor, above Makondo's bar ). The owner, Lucho (who bears an uncanny resemblance to George Clooney), brews handcrafted ales, although he can be a bit pushy in trying to get customers to buy drinks. Typically there are a few varieties on offer: a dark hoppy stout or porter, a red, and a fresh lager that when muddled with yerba buena is delicious. Reviews are mixed: some people love this place, others swear that it should be avoided.

Stay safe [ edit ]

  • Stay calm and continue walking. Most of the dogs will merely escort you to the limit of their territory and leave you alone.
  • Avoid eye contact. Take off reflective sunglasses as this seems to trigger the animals.
  • Throwing stones, or even just pretending to, usually creates a respectful distance.
  • If a dog starts biting, it will usually be from behind. In such cases, turn around to face the animal and seek an escape, but do not run. Keep your backpack or anything else you are carrying between you and the animals for protection. Calling out for help can be useful, as locals are so used to barking dogs that they rarely pay attention.
  • In the rare case that you are bitten, seek medical attention and get a shot against rabies. This disease is fatal without immediate medical intervention.
  • Avoid drinking un-clean water
  • Be picky about what food you eat and ensure that it has been cooked properly. What might appear to be well established restaurants can be just as bad as street traders when it comes to food hygiene.
  • Hot food is the best food. Make sure everything has been cooked thoroughly and be sure to chew your food. It will help aid digestion at altitude.
  • Sunscreen . Since Huaraz is physically and visually far from the Pacific Coast beaches, it may not occur to casual visitors to buy and use sunscreen. For those people who are planning on trekking into the mountains, or doing mountain climbing, sunscreen is a vital resource. The thin air and high altitudes increase the effects of UV penetration.
  • Armed robberies of tourists are fairly common, even more so on Sundays.

Go next [ edit ]

  • Trujillo . At least 2 bus companies (Movil and Linea) provide overnight service to Trujillo. The trip takes about 7 hours. The busses may not be equipped with air-conditioning, so it may be a hot ride. It's a rocky, fast-paced trip through the mountains.

Yungay Express (07:00), Turismo Huaraz & Huandoy (09:00) pass through Caraz 2 hours later & the spectacular Cañon del Pato to Chimbote terminal terrestre, where you can change for Trujillo.

  • Caraz . Minibuses leave frequently and the trip takes about one hour.

Getting to Huaraz

Huaraz is in the Ancash region of Peru. It is the gateway to the beautiful peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. Here are a couple of ways to get to Huaraz:

By Air: The closest airport to Huaraz is Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport, which is in Anta, about 20 kilometers from Huaraz. Presently, airlines StarPeru and ATSA fly from Lima to Huaraz.

By Bus: The most common way to get from Lima to Huaraz is by bus. Between Lima and Huaraz, there are services from Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours, and Linea, among others. Take a day trip to one of the many stunning glacial lakes around Huaraz, such as Laguna Parón and Laguna 69.

Lake 69 is a famous glacial lake. Lake 69, named for its catalog number, is one of Peru’s most beautiful lakes. It is at 4600m in the Cordillera Blanca. Its iridescent blue water contrasts with steep, snow-capped peaks. The trek to the lake is difficult, but it is worth it for the views of Huascarán, Peru’s highest mountain, and Mount Pisco.

Llanganuco Lakes in Huascarán National Park are another must-see. Chinancocha (female lagoon) and Orconcocha (male lagoon) are two beautiful lakes at 3850m. The Cordillera Blanca and glacial runoff give both lakes a turquoise color. Lake 69 is more difficult to reach than the Llanganuco Lakes.

Lake Parón is another Cordillera Blanca gem. It’s the area’s largest lake and has brilliant blue waters. Lake Parón, at 4185m, overlooks Caraz, Artesonraju, and Pisco. For a unique view of this tranquil area, kayak on the lake or walk.

Each lake has its own charm, making Huaraz’s landscape diverse.

Explore Huascarán National Park

Peru’s Huascarán National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its towering peaks, including Peru’s highest mountain. Lake 69 and the Llanganuco Lakes are among the glacial lakes in this 3,400-square-kilometer Cordillera Blanca paradise. Andean condors and spectacled bears are among the park’s unique species. Huascarán National Park offers high-altitude trekking and nature experiences in stunning landscapes.

The bus wasn't sold out so we could take two seats per person. They played a movie but you can turn of the sound for your seat. Short after leaving Lima we got a little snack. We payed 65 soles per person through the internet.

This was an interesting experience as a foreigner! We took the overnight bus from Lima to Yungay and back for our visit to Huascaran National Park. Very good value ($76 per person for the highest end option round trip) however not sure I could do it again! Purchasing tickets was very easy online. Translated the site to English and you choose your seats while booking. They have pictures on the website so you can see what your seats look like - there are different options but it's pretty easy to navigate if you're not sure. Arriving at the Lima bus station felt incredibly chaotic. Our bus was at 10:30 pm, however the station was packed and bustling when we got there at 9:30. The people at the counter seemed proud to not speak any English so we struggled to communicate, but in the end the process is pretty efficient and effective. Even though you buy tickets online, you need to wait in line to pick up your actual ticket. Then go next door to the luggage check - they'll give you a ticket for each bag which you'll need at arrival. The "bus station" at Yungay is really just a tiny little shop, be ready to wait in line no matter which station you're at - no idea why but everyone seemed to have a zillion questions. The bus ride itself... the temperature can fluctuate a lot from warm to super cold (sometimes all within a few hours). On the way back, they were playing a movie with the sound playing through the speakers, why why why can't they just give you the option of listening through headphones instead of forcing everyone to listen? It wasn't super loud but definitely distracting. The ride itself was super bumpy and with the buses being so tall, I just felt like I was being thrown around side to side all night long. Couple that with an odd smell I noticed when I sat down.. I self medicated with motion sickness medication and some sleep aid but still got pretty nauseous with some headache. Eventually was able to sleep but not a restful way to spend a night. Woke up and found they left us some snacks during the night. The bus itself it pretty nice, nicer than any bus I've seen in the US.. really massive. The bathrooms actually weren't bad BUT the ride is so bumpy and swervy, it is not an easy task! I wouldn't look forward to doing this ride again, but it's a decent option to travel around Peru. Good value when the cost of a flight could easily be 4x as expensive. I would consider a seat on the lower floor and towards the front since it should be more stable, though.

Took an overnight Bus from Huaraz to Trujillo. The Bus was fine, even at the second floor the seats declined really far, we got blankets and the temperature was okay (not too hot not to cold) - perfect conditions for a good sleep. BUT the tv was bursting untill 3:30 am - it was way too loud, even if I would've wanted to watch the Movie (which i didn't). The speakers are over your head and you cant turn the Volume down. Asked two times if they could lower it - they didn't. First time almost no sleep for me at an overnight Bus, probably depends on who is in charge of the volume though.

Rode with Movil in Ecuador, and preffered it to the multiple trips we took with Cruz Del Sur. Our tickets were cheaper, and the seats were more comfy with further recline.

We booked Trujillo to Chachopoyas then Chachopoyas to Chiclayo using Movil Tours. On our first trip from Trujillo we didn't know you could book VIP seats so our seats we up top in the regular sort of hard and narrow seats. The upper level seats do recline but they are pretty uncomfortable for an overnight bus trip. Also it is basically impossible to walk around while the bus is moving unless you are an acrobat or a sailor since the bus really sways. On our trip from Chachopoyas to Chiclayo we booked the lower level VIP seating and it was definitely more comfortable, and it was also more stable so getting up for the bathroom was easier. Food was okay and the same on both the regular and VIP area. The bathroom was pretty filthy by the time we reached our destination. They play movies but in Spanish only and there are no head phone jacks so the sound can be fine or too low depending on who ever is in charge. Since there weren't many options to get to Chachopoyas this totally worked but it wasn't the best possible travel experience.

Booked the Premier service to take my family from Lima to Huaraz. After some research, this appears to be the only overnight service which offered seats that recline 180 degrees. Website, and indeed the entire service from start to finish is tricky to navigate if you are not a Spanish speaker - do not expect any favours in this regard. Ticket purchase was fairly straightforward online once Google translate was utilised. The reservation slip showed two departure addresses and we actually had to ask a friendly hotel concierge to call them to confirm the correct one. We arrived at the depot several hours before our departure. They printed out our tickets for our outbound leg but we were told we had to get our tickets for the return leg in Huaraz (I did this the day before our return departure partly out of paranoia but we could have collected an hour before scheduled departure). The depot happily stored our luggage for us while we spent the day in Lima. When we returned in the evening, our bags were removed from storage and tagged separately for loading to our scheduled bus - we didn't need to keep them with us. There are many buses leaving between 21.00 and 23.00 and they are announced in Spanish - we went up several times to check if ours had been called before they took pity on us and signalled when our bus was ready to depart. I can't comment on the food as we simply boarded, reclined our seats, and tried to sleep. With the exception of one seat which refused to fully recline, the seats did indeed go flat enough that you can reasonably lie on your side; although lying on your front would be unrealistic. They are wide and a small pillow and blanket are provided. I would recommend having a fleece handy (as they turn the aircon on intermittently) and earplugs and an eye mask. Given the nature of the journey which includes winding roads, this is never going to be as comfortable as a fully flat bed on a plane. All in all, however, I would say that the configuration is about as good as it can be. Three of us slept fitfully, whilst my wife didn't. A tip for what it's worth - if you have a choice take seats as far to the rear of the bus as you can as this should minimise lateral movement in transit. Either way, expect to be knocked around, particularly as you head onto the more winding roads. No complaints on punctuality - both legs departed and arrived on time and from what I understand the Premier service is particularly reliable. Toilet - smelly and cramped. But what can you expect from a coach? Best advice - exercise bladder control if possible. Baggage collection upon arrival was strictly only with your baggage receipt - don't worry about the risk of some third party making off with your hold luggage. We were going straight to the airport on our return leg to Lima. If you do the same, disembark at the first stop (Los Olivos), and make sure your bags are tagged accordingly when you check them in. Los Olivos is closer to the airport than the final destination and avoids the need to double back on yourself through morning traffic. In the end we arrived in Los Olivos terminal (where there are toilets) at 5.10, some 6 hours post-departure. The taxi to the airport cost me PEN30, and they drop you outside the main gate to avoid paying the drop off charge, but the walk is barely 250 metres so manageable. Value for money? No question - yes. For the quality of the seat alone the small price premium to a regular seat it is worthwhile and it's hard to imagine covering 400km in a better manner short of flying (which we discounted as the only current service is horrifically unreliable). The personnel are friendly and one gets the impression that this is actually a very well organised and managed operation. On the other hand, the language barrier (which I take my share of responsibility for) combined with the occasional lack of clear information for what was a novel experience impacted on my confidence as a rookie and the nervousness this created does influence my rating of the experience. Now I am more versed this would naturally be less of an issue. I have provided as much detail as I have partly so others can learn and hopefully gain confidence from my experience. In summary - good on execution once you are on the bus and hopefully the above goes some way to filling in some of the unknowns in the pre-boarding process.
