cruise control/speedometer

I have a 1980 RS Camaro that i just purchased about a month ago. Its my first car (but not one i drive everyday) and need a little help. The speedometer never worked since ive had it. I was wondering if i could disconnect the speedometer cable from the cruise control box and run a cable strait from the tranny to the firewall and up to the speedometer because the wire from the cruise control makes the needle move when i disconnected it and twisted the inside one with my fingers, but i did that with the wire from the tranny and it didnt work. so i think the cruise control is messing with it. can i remove the cruise control without messing with the vaccum? Thanks for the help.  

Yes you can bypass the Cruise control by running a cable from the tranny to your Speedo. I had the same problem with my 79 Camaro. When you go to buy the new cable, tell the person behind the counter what the problem is and that you want to bypass the Cruise control because it is not working. They should be able to give you a Speedo cable for the same year car without Cruise control. If not, then you might have to measure the length from your tranny to your speedometer and find one that will work. Edit: Try replacing the cable from the Trans to the Cruise control box first and see if that works. Also, there might be a problem with the Speedo gear inside the Transmission. Try the cable first and see if that solves the problem.
