Ever wondered what those strange—and sometimes downright funny—codes that a cruise ship captain uses to communicate with crew members mean? Maybe you’ve heard the crew saying weird things that didn’t make sense.

Well, we were pretty curious ourselves—plus, no one likes to be kept in the dark!

So, we decided to research the meanings of 19 secret codes on cruise ships, and we’re ready to share our discovery with you. Are you ready to clear up some confusion?

Note: This post looks at the official secret codes used by cruise lines. For a fun secret code passengers use, check out the meaning of an upside-down pineapple .

“Code Alpha” or “Alpha, Alpha, Alpha” is one of the most common secret codes you’ll hear the broadcast on a cruise ship.

You’ve probably already heard it in a movie or two!

Typically, using that call means that there’s a medical emergency on the ship. The Code Alpha lets crew members know that someone needs medical help without causing panic.

Usually, most cruise ship companies only use a single “Alpha.” Though some cruise lines like Royal Caribbean repeat “Alpha” three times.

Some other cruise companies have their own version of “Alpha,” and an example is Oceania Cruises. The cruise line uses “Code Mike” instead for a medical emergency.

On the other hand, Celebrity Cruises goes for “Star Code, Star Code, Star Code.”

This is another secret code that a cruise ship staff uses to discreetly communicate to each other that there’s some form of emergency going on that requires their action.

Unlike the previous code, a “Code Bravo” alerts crew members to a fire on the ship. Again, this subtle signal’s main purpose is to save passengers from freaking out while the professionals handle the situation from behind the scenes!

It seems like cruise companies have a huge vocabulary to indicate different sorts of alarms and emergencies, and it’s understandable! Repeating “Charlie, Charlie, Charlie” is also one of those.

If you hear crew members calling out that secret code, it usually means that there’s a security threat onboard.

As a passenger, keep calm and wait patiently to see if there are announcements or instructions you’ll need to follow for your safety.

“Delta, Delta, Delta” is often used by crew members as a secret alert that there’s been an accident that caused damage to the ship. It may indicate physical damage to the ship’s hull or pollution.

Norwegian Cruise Line mostly uses “Code Delta” for pollution emergencies.

If you hear “Code Echo” or “Echo, Echo, Echo” on a cruise ship, it alerts the ship’s staff that the vessel is drifting, often because of high winds.

As soon as they hear this, the crew will take action to correct the ship’s direction, especially if there’s a risk of collision. Such action includes maneuvering the ship to safety to dodge an accident.

If you’ve been on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you might’ve heard the captain say, “Kilo, Kilo, Kilo,” followed by crew members will rush seemingly everywhere. What does that mean?

Whether it’s said once or three times, “Code Kilo” requests that all crew members head over to their emergency posts. Usually, this happens if there’s been an incident on the ship requiring the organized action of the entire personnel.

A life preserver on a cruise liner used when someone falls overboard

Most cruise ship companies, especially Royal Caribbean, use “Oscar” to communicate that a person has fallen overboard . Some cruise lines use the code “Mr. Mob” in this situation instead, which stands for “Man overboard.”

This is one of the more serious codes out there. A “code oscar” may be accompanied by sounding the horn three times. Doing this lets any nearby ships know that there’s someone in the water so that they’ll stay away.

Another code that might sound strange is “Code Sierra” because it gives no clue what’s happening. Well, now we know that it refers to a type of medical emergency that requires a stretcher.

Sometimes, it’ll go hand-in-hand with other codes that indicate a medical emergency. This secret code alerts the medical staff that a stretcher is required to treat the injured person.

Want to know what happens if two people get into a fight while on a cruise ship? That’s right; you’ll hear, “Zulu, Zulu, Zulu!”

Then, cruise ship security is dispatched to deal with whoever’s fighting. The security team is quick to break up fights, and may place the offending passengers in the cruise ship jail .

After a short period of time, everything will go back to being peaceful and laid-back as it should be on a cruise.

10. Charlie Alpha

Can you hear a combination of two secret codes on a cruise ship? Well, it seems like you can, although it might be rare.

“Charlie Alpha” combines the meanings of those two individual codes. It refers to the existence of a security threat caused by a medical emergency.

Again, if you happen to hear it on your cruise vacation, the best course of action is to keep your composure and listen for any important instructions.

A cruise ship funnel emitting a lot of black smoke pollution

Despite how funny it sounds, hearing “Papa” on a cruise ship isn’t a good sign. It means that there’s been a form of pollution onboard.

More often than not, companies will use this secret code to alert their crew about an oil spill.

12. Code Blue

This is another code for a medical emergency on a cruise ship.

When the captain or a crew member says it, it’s like an announcement for other crew members to take the right measurements to help whoever’s in trouble.

13. Code Red

As with anything related to the color red, this secret cruise ship code sounds like danger, and its meaning reflects that. When “Code Red” goes off, it means there’s been a spread or an outbreak of a disease on the ship.

Soon enough, that announcement will be followed by confining all the affected passengers to their quarters to keep the illness from spreading further.

Then, you can expect the cleaning crew to religiously scrub every inch of the ship!

However, there’s also “Code Yellow,” which is often used when there’s a spread of illness on the ship, but it isn’t as serious.

14. Code Red Parties

This code has nothing to do with illnesses but rather fires. If you hear it repeated three times, there’s likely a fire onboard.

Other times, it can be an indicator that there’s a fire at sea.

15. Code Purple

Code purple relates to bomb threats. It may also be used in instances of chemical or biological threats.

If you hear “Code Purple” on the overhead speakers, don’t panic. Cruise ship security is highly trained to deal with all kinds of emergencies.

Wet floor sign on the board of the cruise ship

“PVI” is short for “Public Vomiting Incident.” As you might have guessed, this secret code relates to incidents requiring quick clean-up, usually when someone has thrown up.

Still, not all cruise lines use that code. Sometimes, you’ll hear “Purel” or “Code V,” which is short for “Code Vomit.”

It’s one of the less serious announcements on a cruise ship since it isn’t an emergency. However, other passengers who had already been there when that incident happened may disagree.

17. Victoria

This code may not be used across many cruise lines to indicate an extreme flooding incident onboard.

If you hear this code, don’t panic. Though no one wants to hear that their ship is flooding, it’s more often related to a pipe burst than a ship accident.

18. Operation Bright Star

Whenever you hear “Operation Bright Star” on a cruise ship, just know that it’s a member of the medical team making the call.

Usually, this alarms other medical team members to let them know that they must assemble to aid a passenger having an urgent medical emergency. In most cases, it’ll be a stroke, seizure, heart attack, and the like.

19. Operation Fallen Star or Operation Rising Star

Those two secret codes are pretty ominous—they mean that someone has passed on the cruise ship.

Crew members will take care of the dead person’s body, which will be stored in the cruise ship’s morgue until the vessel reaches land.

Some cruise lines will use “Operation Bright Star” in this scenario.

Cruise Ship Secret Codes (inc Emergency & Naughty Ones too)

We all know the cruise ship crew uses secret code words onboard to communicate with each other without raising concerns amongst the relaxing passengers.

Perhaps you have heard them yourself over the tannoys.

I, too have wondered what some of the codes mean, so I’ve researched them all.

Plus, as well as the codes the crew use, did you know some cheeky codes are used amongst the guests?  Oh yes! Well, we’ll cover those too!

Cruise Ship Secret Codes

Cruise Ship Emergency Codes

Some cruise ships have their own specific codes unique to the cruise line, although they are typically a variation on the most used universal version of the code.

A code 30-30 will be the crew contacting maintenance to clear up a mess that could be hazardous to passing guests, for example, if someone slips on a wet floor.

Code Adam is used if there is a missing child onboard .

This code originates from the abduction (and murder) of a child in the early 1980s, Adam Walsh, which also resulted in a Code Adam missing child safety program.

If you hear a code alpha on a cruise ship, there is a medical emergency onboard .

Many cruise lines have their own secret code for this, including the following.

Royal Caribbean has the code “Alpha, Alpha, Alpha.”

Oceania Cruises are known to use “ Code Mike ” instead of Alpha to signify a medical emergency.

Celebrity Cruises use “Star Code, Star Code, Star Code”.

Medical Emergency Button

A code blue is usually used to signify some sort of medical emergency onboard the ship.

This would indicate to staff to take the required actions for the safety and well-being of the person, guest, or crew member as calmly and discreetly as possible.

Bravo, Bravo, Bravo

The code Bravo, Bravo Bravo is a subtle way for the crew to alert other crew members that there is a fire onboard or a similar serious emergency.

Fire Extinguishers

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie

The code “Charlie, Charlie, Charlie” is used if there is a security threat onboard the ship.  It is known to be used on Royal Caribbean ships.

It can also signal forthcoming helicopter winch operations aboard c-bed accommodation ships.

Delta, Delta, Delta

The crew uses the code “Delta, Delta, Delta” to signal to each other there has been or there is the possibility of a biohazard .

This could mean there has been some form of accident or event causing pollution from the ship.

Delta, Delta, Delta can also be used to secretly communicate the ship’s hull has suffered damage.

In some instances “ Code Papa ” is known to have been used to signify the same thing, an oil spillage or pollution-related incident.

A code Echo or “ Echo, Echo, Echo ” communicates that the ship is starting to drift .  This is often due to strong winds.  It’s important because it could indicate the ship is about to collide with the port or possibly another ship, accident no one wants to happen.

It can also act as a code to make the crew operate the gangway or the ship’s navigation to be ready to take action and maneuver the ship.

A code Kilo or specifically “ Kilo, Kilo, Kilo ” on Royal Caribbean ships signifies to crew to get to assigned emergency posts .

These will have been pre-designated in previous crew training and will alert the crew and get them in a position to take whatever actions may be deemed necessary from there.

The code Mr Mob stands for “ Man Overboard .”  Someone has fallen overboard.

This is a very serious incident, and the ship may also sound its horn three times which would give a wider indication that there was an onboard emergency to other nearby ships as well.

Man Overboard Notice and Alarm

If you hear the crew calling the code “Oscar” or specifically “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships it means there is a man overboard .

Purell, Purell, Purell

It is a code used when an urgent clean-up is required, for example, if someone has vomited in a public area.

Another code meaning the same thing is “ PVI, ” which stands for “Public Vomiting Incident”.

Or sometimes, simply “ Code V ” is used.

Operation Bright Star

The code Operation Bright star will only be used by medical staff who are using the code to call other medical team members to assist with a specific medical incident such as a stroke or heart attack .

Disney Cruise Line are known to use code bright star to signal a serious stroke heart related or medical emergency onboard.

  • Operation Rising Star

Is code on some ships to communicate there has been a death on the ship .

If a passenger dies onboard a ship, their body will be held in the ship’s morgue .

Sometimes the code “ Bright Star ” or “ Fallen star ” is used to signify someone has died.

cruise ship morgues

A code red indicated an outbreak of illness on board the ship.   This could be an instance of norovirus onboard the ship.

When there is a code red, sick passengers will be confined to their rooms until their illness has been deemed to pass.

The ship may undertake extra deep cleaning to contain the spread as much as possible.

Code Red Parties

The code “Red Parties, Red Parties, Red Parties” is reportedly used by Disney Cruise lines to indicate a fire onboard.

On other ships, it can mean fire at sea.

Code Sierra

A code Sierra indicated a specific type of medical emergency, one that requires a stretcher .

If it is a serious medical emergency, you may well hear the other code words to signify that as well.

Code Yellow

A code yellow is sometimes used to indicate an illness that isn’t so serious .

Zulu Zulu Zulu

Code Zulu Zulu Zulu is a warning to crew members there is a fight incident onboard.

Pool Emergency Codes

Code baby ruth.

I don’t know if Code Baby Ruth is 100% genuinely used, but if it is, it is to raise awareness among staff that there is a “poo” in the pool.

It might just be a myth that stems from this movie scene from Caddyshack.

Here’s a funny clip:

There are also reports that a “Code Winnie” is a secret code for a poo in the pool on Disney Cruise Lines.  Again this might just be a joke.

Royal Caribbean Emergency Codes

Codes specifically used by Royal Caribbean include:

  • Alpha, Alpha, Alpha – Medical Emergency
  • Charlie, Charlie, Charlie – Security threat
  • Echo, Echo, Echo – ship is drifting
  • Kilo, Kilo, Kilo – crew to report to emergency posts
  • Oscar, Oscar, Oscar – man overboard.

As you can see, they make a point of repeating the secret code word three times which makes them different from most other cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Emergency Codes

As well as using the main typical emergency codes outlined, Carnival has some of its own for specific situations:

  • Alpha Team, Alpha Team, Alpha Team – fire onboard
  • Operation Brightstar – for medical emergencies related to stroke or heart attack, cardiac arrest

Norwegian Cruise Line Emergency Codes

NCL also has a couple of its own secret codes, including:

  • Delta – there’s been damage to the ship
  • Papa – there’s been an environmental incident

Why do Cruise Ships Use Secret Codes?

The crew of a cruise ship use secret codes to communicate so as not to cause unnecessary anxiety or even panic among guests.

They enable the crew to discreetly start taking action.

For example, if the crew was calling “man overboard,” you can be sure alerted passengers would rush to take a look, and perhaps the crowd would hinder and slow down any emergency rescue attempts.

A much-publicized incident without codes might also create panic and urgency for some people, who might immediately start worrying and looking for their loved ones.

The crew will be able to act alot more efficiently and discreetly by using these secret codes.

What is the Code for Fire on a Cruise Ship?

Fire is the biggest threat to a cruise ship and one no cruise captain ever wants to hear or have to alert the crew about.

Most cruise lines use “Bravo, Bravo, Bravo” to indicate a fire onboard.

Carnival cruise use “ Alpha Team, Alpha Team, Alpha Team” as their secret code to alert the crew to fire.

Cunard uses the code “ Priority 1 ” to indicate a fire onboard.

Disney Cruise lines “Red Parties, Red Parties, Red Parties” as their secret code to indicate a fire onboard.

What Code is Used if Someone Has Died on a Cruise Ship?

Codes used when someone has died onboard vary by the cruise line.

If say, an old person has passed away, you might hear these code words:

  • Fallen star

Secret Codes on Cruise Ship Doors

Did you know some symbols act as potential secret codes between passengers, and some could be deemed a bit “naughty?”

Upsidedown Pineapple : This is a secret code symbol used between swingers, both on land but also on cruise ship door decorations and sometimes other attire.

You can find out more here about the meaning of an upside-down pineapple on a cruise and other hidden meaning symbols and codes you might spot.

Pink Flamingoes are another lesser-known symbol among swingers on cruises , indicating they are into the lifestyle.

To Conclude

There are many codes you may hear on a cruise ship, but in reality, you will rarely hear most of them.

Instead, you are possibly more likely to hear them used in dramatic scenes on Tv and possibly wonder exactly what they mean.

Are there any codes we missed?

Please let us know in the comments so we can add them.

14 Emergency Codes You Never Want To Hear On A Cruise Ship

by Prof. Cruise · April 30, 2024

A cruise ship in the backgroud with a shocked looking woman, a biohazard symbol, a first aid kid, a barfing emoji, a fire, a life ring, a graphic of two people fighting, a stretcher, and a bomb in the foreground. Text reads: 14 Words And Phrases You Never Want To Hear On A Cruise

If you hear “Charlie” called out in a stern tone on land it’s probably to get the attention of a misbehaving human or pet. Same goes for “Oscar” (although you might also be asking after your favorite hot dog brand at the market). “Bravo” is usually shouted out on land to indicate enthusiastic approval following a musical or theater performance. And “Delta” is most often heard as an announcement at the airport in reference to a particular flight: “Delta flight 443 is now boarding through door number 6.”

While all those words are fairly innocuous on land (sure, tell that to Charlie), they mean something very different and much more ominous if you’re on a cruise. Here’s what those four words, in addition to ten additional words and phrases, mean on a cruise ship and why you never want to hear them.

14 Words And Phrases You Never Want To Hear On A Cruise Ship

While public announcements broadcast throughout the ship from the cruise director or Captain are common on a cruise and are usually just to keep passengers updated on activities, weather conditions, and port arrival and departure times, sometimes you’ll hear an announcement that will leave you scratching your head and maybe even panicking. But don’t run back to your cabin and throw on your life jacket just yet! Here’s what the 14 most common cruise ship emergency codes mean and why we all hope to never hear them.

Cruise Ship Emergency Codes

Index (skip to):

What does Alpha mean on a cruise ship? What does Bravo mean on a cruise ship? What does Charlie mean on a cruise ship? What does Delta mean on a cruise ship? What does Echo mean on a cruise ship? What does Kilo mean on a cruise ship? What does Operation Rising Star mean on a cruise? What does Oscar mean on a cruise ship? What does Purell mean on a cruise ship? What does PVI mean on a cruise ship? What does Red Party mean on a cruise ship? What does Sierra mean on a cruise ship? What does Star Code mean on a cruise ship? What does Zulu mean on a cruise ship?

What does Alpha mean on a cruise ship?

Code Alpha means there is a medical emergency onboard the cruise ship. It will often be associated with a location. The announcement might sound like, “code alpha, deck 10 midship pool.”

What does Bravo mean on a cruise ship?

Code Bravo means there has been fire detected. While fire is one of the greatest safety risks to a cruise ship, don’t become alarmed if you hear this code. Cruise ships have extensive safety procedures in place to quickly contain and extinguish fires.

What does Charlie mean on a cruise ship?

Code Charlie is used for security threats. You’ll hear this code repeated three times if a possible security threat has been identified: “Charlie, Charlie, Charlie.” While very rare, this code could be used for a bomb threat or pirates approaching the vessel. Note that some cruise ships offer a themed “pirate night,” so don’t panic and start yelling Charlie!

What does Delta mean on a cruise ship?

If you hear, “Delta, Delta, Delta” on a cruise ship, it means there’s a possible biohazard situation. This could be any virus or toxin dangerous to human health.

What does Echo mean on a cruise ship?

Code Echo means the cruise ship is starting to drift. If you hear it three times, “Echo, Echo, Echo,” it may mean your ship is at risk of colliding with another vessel or object.

What does Kilo mean on a cruise ship?

Code Kilo means crew should report to their emergency stations. You’ll sometimes hear this one during planned crew drills that usually take place on port days while most passengers are off the ship.

What does Operation Rising Star mean on a cruise?

Operation Rising Star, while sounding almost poetic, is one of the saddest codes you can hear on a cruise. It means someone has passed away onboard.

What does Oscar mean on a cruise ship?

If you hear Oscar repeated three times, “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” it means someone has gone overboard. Often this will be followed some time later by an announcement by the Captain explaining the situation and any search and rescue efforts underway.

What does Purell mean on a cruise ship?

“Purell, Purell, Purell” means cleanup is needed in a public area of the ship. It will usually be followed by a specific location.

What does PVI mean on a cruise ship?

Code PVI means, “public vomiting incident” and is always one I pay close attention to so I can stay far away from the area until it’s properly cleaned up.

What does Red Party mean on a cruise ship?

Red Party means there’s a fire at sea (as opposed to on the cruise ship).

What does Sierra mean on a cruise ship?

While Code Alpha is used for a general medical emergency, Code Sierra is used for specific medical emergencies that require a stretcher.

What does Star Code mean on a cruise ship?

“Star Code, Star Code, Star Code” is also used on certain ships to communicate a medical emergency.

What does Zulu mean on a cruise ship?

“Zulu, Zulu, Zulu” means there’s a fight onboard and is only used on Carnival (I kid, I kid – I love Carnival).

While cruising is usually a fun and relaxing experience, emergencies sometimes happen at sea just like they do on land. Passengers get sick and injured and occasionally even pass away, fights break out, and rarely more serious incidents happen such as fires and mechanical failures. If you do hear one of these codes announced on your cruise, you’ll now be able to identify it. However, in most cases (except for PVI in which case I recommend staying far away from that area), you should carry on with whatever you’re doing unless there are further passenger instructions announced by the Captain.

Today’s Cruising Pro Tip:

Never purchase cruise/travel insurance through a cruise line. You’ll pay more and get less than if you purchase it on your own. Use a site like  TravelInsurance.com * to compare rates and plans and get exactly what you want for the least amount of money. Simply enter your travel dates, total travel cost, and a few basic pieces of information about yourself and see a list of quotes to compare. Savings can be significant and mean more to spend onboard, at port, or on another cruise!

Thank you. We had one code “Alpha” and one code “Kilo” on our recent trip and I wondered what it meant. Is this consistent amongst all the major cruise lines?

  • Other terms, like "babaloo" and "mamagayo," are used to describe annoying guests or employees.
  • Insider Today

If you don't work on a cruise ship, "no rice, no power" and "don't get a banana" may sound like an alien language. That's because crew members have dozens of secret code words and sayings they use to communicate while keeping passengers in the dark.

A single cruise ship may employ people from over 40 countries, resulting in industry slang that combines words and sayings from several different languages. Insider compiled a dictionary of cruise ship language based on interviews with cruise workers, previous reporting , and industry blogs . Alert codes and crew slang often vary by cruise line.

PVI, Protein Spill, and Purell: From sea sickness to the norovirus (a cruise's worst nightmare), crew members are no strangers to "public vomit incidents," or PVIs for short. To avoid upsetting passengers — and their stomachs — cruise workers may also refer to such incidents as a "protein spill" or "Purell" when orchestrating clean-up duty.

Winnie: In a similar vein, "Winnie" means a passenger has pooped in the pool — Disney Cruise shorthand for Winnie-the-Pooh.

Mufasa: A reference to the saddest scene in cinematic history, Disney Cruise workers use "Mufasa" to communicate that a parent has been separated from their child.

Bravo, Alpha Team, Red Party:  Different cruise lines have their own alert codes to signal that there's a fire, either onboard the ship or at sea. These are three of them.

Alpha, Star Code, Code Mike: Similarly, cruise lines have their own alert codes for medical emergencies, including the above four.

Echo: One word I never want to hear on a giant floating vessel is "echo," which can mean that the ship is drifting or that there's a risk of high winds or collision.

Kilo: "Kilo" is used during an emergency to alert crew members to report to their assigned posts.

Code Oscar or Mr. Mob: Different emergency code words used to alert crew of a man overboard (M.O.B) situation. According to Marine Insight , the distress signal is raised over the cruise radio system and loudspeakers to alert crew members to stand watch for the missing person and slow the ship down.

Some terms are used to secretly describe passengers or fellow workers

Babaloo : Alternatively spelled "Babalu," this is widespread cruise worker slang that means "fool" or "idiot."

Mamagayo:  Meaning "lazy," this term is used to describe a cruise worker shirking from their job responsibilities or pretending to work when they're really not.

Capo: Derived from the Italian word for a military captain, this is cruise slang for "boss."

Cone and Coning: "Cone" is a derogatory word crew members use to describe passengers, a supposed reference to how cruise workers are constantly dodging vacationers as if they're swerving around traffic cones. "Coning," on the other hand is when a crew member hooks up with a passenger (a fireable offense).

Staff versus Crew: Various employee departments onboard a cruise ship are organized within a rigid hierarchy that can determine their pay and living conditions. One such divide is between cruise "staff," which typically consists of entertainment, retail, and guest service workers, and cruise "crew," which includes waiters, bartenders, and housekeeping.

    Related stories

Concessionaire: This is a third-party contract worker that is not employed directly by the cruise line. This can include retail shop workers and casino employees, for example.

Mainstage: Worker slang that refers to a cruise's entertainment team.

Blue Boys: Nickname for janitorial staff who rarely leave the ship and send all of their money back home.

Shoreside: These are corporate cruise employees who don't work on the boat and don't always listen to their "shipboard" counterparts.

Meter Monitor: A word used during the pandemic to describe the guest service officers in charge of monitoring social distance guidelines between guests.

Royal Genie: These are the VIP butlers on Royal Caribbean cruises who wait on guests staying in the exclusive Star Suites.

If you're a cruise worker, the last thing you want is a "banana"

Banana: If you're a cruise worker, you do not want a banana. This means a staff member has broken the rules and may get written up or reported.

Mafia: The so-called mafia on a cruise ship is when crew members from the same country form a tight-knit community in order to support one another.

Paisano: If crew members are "paisano," they are from the same country or share the same ethnic origin.

Second jobs: Some cruise workers run side businesses on the ship, like crew hair salons or food delivery. This is their "second job."

Let's Makan: This means "let's eat!"

No Rice, No Power: Slang used by crew members whose diet consists mainly of rice.

Lifestyle Cruise: An industry euphemism for sexy adult-only cruises, including clothing-optional cruises, swinger cruises, and singles cruises.

Cruise to Nowhere: Also called a "stay-cation" by some cruise workers, this is when a ship cruises at sea without stopping at any ports.

The Red Phone: This is a confidential phone line to the mainland that cruise workers can use to talk about sensitive issues.

Float: A cash register that contains many different types of foreign currencies.

Dect phone (or deck phone): Portable work phone used by crew members that connects to the ship's telephone system.

Slop chest: A tiny convenience store in the crew-only section of a cruise ship that sells essential items.

    Cool Cruiser

I heard a Brightstar announcement on the Conquest when we were on a couple of weeks ago. I thought this was a man overboard code. Guess not.

According to this post: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=56933 it is a medical emergency.

    pjtulsa

On our last cruise they thought there was someone over board and the call was Bravo,Bravo,Bravo. Brightstar has always been for medical as already stated.

Oh...thank you. I actually remembering them stating a location on the ship, but I can't recall where. I didn't hear anything about a medical emergency, which you usually do hear about if it happens.

This is interesting information. Does anyone know anyother codes that are used on the ships. This would be good information to know.

    sixgun8

and I think there are different ones depending on the seriousness of the medical emergency as well. We had one on our cruise but I thought it was different. we were in the library siging the log book when it happened and we asked the guy in the library. he didn't seem concerned and told us it was a minor medical injury, it was deck 0 so it had to have been a crew member. I told him that if he wasn't running anywhere, then we weren't worried.

    lazy_daisy

We heard the same "operation brightstar" on the Pride last week and found out from a porter in Long Beach when we got home that the woman had passed away on the ship. Very sad. :(

I told him that if he wasn't running anywhere, then we weren't worried.
Reminds me of that t-shirt that says "I am a bomb technician. If you see me running try to keep up."

    I like that.

    10,000+ Club

Brightstar is a security alert call, it summons security ASAP, they usually say what cabin or location with it. for example, "Brightstar cabin 2233" It just means that Security is needed at that location ASAP.

Get your a$$ off !! lol. This is what we hear around 10:30 am debarkation morning, while we are lingering in some lido cafe sipping coffee dreading leaving our cruise.:(

    5,000+ Club

As a sidebar, MV Bright Field was a freighter that rammed into part of the New Orleans dock area, taking out a number of shops and hotel rooms and I think dangerously close to taking out a HAL cruise ship.

Bright Field was later renamed Bright Star. It has since been renamed to Bright City.

I heard an announcement like that which referenced the casino. I went by to see what was going on and there was a woman passed out on the floor. I don't think it was Brightstar that was called, but I don't remember exactly what it was.

LOL this reminds me ... years ago we used to live in a neighborhood near a nuclear power plant. Many of our neighbors worked at said power plant. I used to joke around and tell them "You'd better let me know when you're going on vacation, cause if I pull in and see you puttin' S*** in your trunk, I'll be right behind you":p

    Magus

I was installing a phone system for a company in a Chicago suburb that did a lot of work in Nuclear medicine. So much so, that there was a "cyclotron" on site. I remember on a smoke break asking one of the cyclotron technicians how much time we would have to run, if something went 'horribly horribly wrong'?

His response was, "You wouldn't have enough time to even notice".

I imagine it would be the same thing at your power plant. You wouldn't see them packing... It would be a very quiet flash.... :)

    WillieBluffU

On our last cruise we heard "Operation Brightstar Cabin XXXX" ..being natually nosey I went down the steps to find orange tape and a security guy standing in the hall. Then I talked to a guy near the brightstarred cabin who told me that a elderly man had died in his sleep.

That may be true, but we have very elaborate "Escape" routes etc. that are published yearly, plans for what happens if kids are in schools, etc.:D I figure if I need to evacuate, it's too late - I'll just kick back and relax (as much as possible given the proposed situation:( ). Though my friends who worked there all said that there were so many stages before a meltdown could occur that it is very conceivable to be able to get out of the five mile 'fallout' radius (I'm guessing they forgot that there's only one or two major highways/roads out of this area

If they wanted you to know they would tell you.

    Great Review

Hmmm...it kinda makes sense that it means a death...they are now a bright star in the sky!

I worked at a nuclear power plant for 17 years. If you consider the nuclear core at Three Mile Island melted completely and very little radiation escaped, they are relatively safe. This was before all the safety systems that are now required. The reactor building is pretty stout with layered steel and concrete unlike the shed that was used over the Cherenoble reactors.

When a reactor is operable, you are not able to get near it because of the neutron radiation. Those areas are properly posted/sealed to keep you safe. Other types of radiation are Alpha, Beta and Gamma. Beta and Gamma can penetrate you but Alpha cannot. Alpha however can cause damage if ingested. A general rule is time, distance and shielding to minimize your exposure.

Now a spent fuel bundle is a different critter emitting over 10,000 rem if it is not shielded. An example used is that you place it on one goal line and start running toward it from the other. You will be lucky to get within 30 yards of it being receiving a devestating acute dose.

I actually get more radiation from the sun than the 17 years I worked there.

On our Dawn cruise a couple of weeks ago, a code Alpha was broadcast. I guess it alarmed some passengers, so the Captain came on and said the code was to alert the staff of a medical emergency.

    trock

First day of our cruise on the Miracle there was a Bright star alert.. Later found out some woman was hurt (dont know how) and had to be taken off and put in an ambulance ...

After waiting in the port all day to get on board and only imagining how far she may have traveled to cruise.. only to end up in the hospital is depressing!

    cruiseondude

T = I heard she fell down the stairs... agree - not a good way to start a vaca.. Did you notice how many people had bandages/broken arms/crutches/wheelchairs by the end of the week...

that was weird - I had never seen that b4...

    Catnip

    Now THAT'S funny!!!! :D :D :D

    About Us

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson.  Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.

The Travel Emergency Codes You’re Not Supposed To Know About

The various codes have been established so businesses can quickly and effectively communicate with their employees without their guests, customers, passengers, etc. knowing what they’re talking about.

Travel-related organizations each have their own sets of codes, too. Like these…

NOTE: These lists are not at all complete; they’re just meant to give you an idea of what codes are used and why. Also, be aware that codes are sometimes standardized, sometimes not, so not all entities will use the same code, and some codes will mean one thing on, for example, one cruise ship and something else on another.

    • Alert 1 – a plane in the air has minor electrical/mechanical problems. Units standby at fire station for when the plane lands
    • Alert 2 – a plane in the air has major electrical/mechanical problems, a crash is possible. Units standby at runway for when it lands
    • Alert 3 – A plane has crashed at or near the airport
    • Code Adam – missing child
    • Code Bravo – general security alert

    Cruise Ships

    • 30-30 – maintenance needed to clean up a mess
    • Alpha (specifically Alpha, Alpha, Alpha on Princess and Royal Caribbean ships) – medical emergency
    • Alpha Team, Alpha Team, Alpha Team – fire emergency on a Carnival Cruise Line ship
    • Bravo or Bravo, Bravo, Bravo – fire
    • Charlie – bomb threat
    • Charlie, Charlie, Charlie – security threat on Royal Caribbean ships
    • Code Blue – medical emergency
    • Code Red – outbreak of illness
    • Delta – damage to the ship on Norwegian Cruise Line
    • Delta, Delta, Delta – possible bio-hazard
    • Echo – the ship is starting to drift
    • Echo, Echo, Echo – possible collision with another ship or the shore on Royal Caribbean ships. On other ships it can mean danger of high winds while at port.
    • Kilo (specifically Kilo, Kilo, Kilo on Royal Caribbean ships) – all personnel to report to their emergency posts
    • Omega or Oscar or Bravo, Bravo or Mr. Mob – man overboard (we heard that on a Disney Cruise once. That was fun.)
    • Operation Bright Star (Code Mike on Oceania Cruises) – medical emergency, urgent assistance required
    • Operation Rising Star – someone died on board
    • Oscar, Oscar, Oscar – man overboard on Royal Caribbean ships
    • Mr. Skylight, or Alpha, Alpha, Alpha – minor emergency
    • Papa – environmental emergency (i.e., oil spill) on Norwegian Cruise Line
    • Priority 2 – leak
    • Purell, Purell, Purell or PVI (public vomiting incident) – cleanup (vomit) on Celebrity ships
    • Red Party – fire at sea
    • Red Parties, Red Parties, Red Parties – fire or possible fire on Disney Cruise Lines ships
    • Sierra – call for a stretcher
    • Star Code, Star Code, Star Code – medical emergency on Celebrity ships
    • Zulu, Zulu, Zulu – a fight aboard the ship

I’ll tell you – I’m really good with “the Google” and could not find very many hotel emergency codes. I think they vary from hotel to hotel or at least brand to brand. However here are some from the Crowne Plaza in Dallas, TX, thanks to, of all people, Cory Doctorow (yes, THAT Cory Doctorow):

    • Code 1 – Medical emergency
    • Code 2 – Person stuck in elevator
    • Code 3 – Fire alarm
    • Code 4 – Weather alert
    • Code 5 – Security/bomb alert
    • Code 6 – Security/Call 911
    • Code 7 – Bugs
    • Code 10 – Toilet problems
    • Code 12 – Water/flood
    • Code 99 – Intoxicated guest
    • Code Green – Upset guest
    • Code white – Inspectors

I also discovered that Loyalty Lobby posted a Marriott Crisis Management Guide in 2013 that included several phrases that were to be used during crisis situations, in order to disguise communications. You can see the list here , about 2/3 down the page. It doesn’t explain what code would be used if, say, there was a killer on the loose or a lost child, but I guess they’re all ready if an inspector entered the building. 😉

Some codes for planes, whether for emergencies or not, as communicated to Air Traffic Control (ATC), vary from country to country, while others are defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization and are therefore standardized. Click here for the full list , but the most important ones for emergencies are:

    • 7500 – aircraft hijacking
    • 7600 – radio failure
    • 7700 – emergency

If a plane has an emergency, they need to tell ATC how many “souls are on board.” The code for that is in “Levels,” using the numbers 1 through 5. Level 1 describes an event that could injure or affect only one or two people. And the highest number, Level 5, is if there are 51 or more people potentially involved.

The aforementioned Alerts could potentially be heard. If you were to hear “Alert 3, Level 4,” that means a plane crashed nearby and somewhere between 26 to 50 souls were affected. This could mean passengers, crew or people on the ground. Add “Alert 4” to the list – that means a serious emergency, such as a hijacking.

    The London Underground

    • Code 1 – blood
    • Code 2 – urine/feces
    • Code 3 – vomit
    • Code 4 – spillage
    • Code 5 – broken glass
    • Code 6 – litter
    • Code 7 – everything else
    • Inspector Sands – fire

In addition to Sonequa Martin-Green, other confirmed talent to set sail include The Original Series ' Walter Koenig; The Next Generation 's Wil Wheaton, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, John de Lancie, and Denise Crosby; Deep Space Nine 's Nana Visitor, Armin Shimerman, Max Grodénchik, and Chase Masterson; Voyager 's Robert Picardo and Garrett Wang; Enterprise 's John Billingsley, Connor Trinneer, Anthony Montgomery, and Dominic Keating; Discovery 's Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, David Ajala, and Mary Chieffo; Picard 's Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, Todd Stashwick, and Peyton List; and Lower Decks ' Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero, and Gabrielle Ruiz.

    Travel Essentials

Flat lay of a Star Trek: Prodigy fanny pack, Klingon dictionary, Federation travel guide, and UFP passport

Whether you're beaming down to port or heading over via plane, we recommend keeping all your important documents and essentials like your passport, wallet, portable battery, phone, Klingon dictionary , and Federation travel guide close to you during your travels.

We recommend a sling bag like this Star Trek: Prodigy schematics fanny pack to hold your necessities. You can also grab a luggage tag , passport holder , and phone case to protect your valuables, as well as a wireless charger to ensure your phone is always charged.

    Immersive Star Trek Themed Experiences

Graphic illustration of a portable charger with a delta, civilian attire, Starfleet skant, a pair of swim trunks, a reusable water bottle, and duffle bag

Each day and night are jam-packed with one-of-a-kind shows, interactive events, Q&As with your favorite actors, panel discussions with leading scientists and experts, trivia sessions, karaoke and nightly themed parties that let you show off your cosplay skills.

From the Gorn's Warp Party (February 22) to Curaçao (February 25) and Aruba (February 26) to Q's Costume Party (February 27), and everything in between, make sure you've got all your cruise attire all packed to go in something like the Star Trek Command Duffle Bag .

    Cruise Attire

A flat lay of a pair of sunglasses, Klingon drinking team raglan tee, NX-01 bucket hat, and Starfleet Academy athletic shorts

From Starfleet dress uniforms to Shore Leave casual fits, we recommend packing a range of outfits. Perhaps a judge's robe for Q's Costume Party? As for the Return to Risa party (February 25) or venturing on land, keep it chill as you get some much needed R&R with some graphic tees to represent your favorite series or the Klingon Drinking Team , cozy Starfleet Academy athletic shorts , and a NX-01 bucket hat .

Our rule of thumb when it's packing for shore leave, we aim to have 1-2 outfits per day, taking into account what activities you plan on engaging in. Snorkeling, hiking, whiskey tasting, sunbathing? Make sure your layers and footwear are appropriate. Comfort is key here.

In addition to that, don't forget a formal/dressier outfit in case you're taking in a nicer dining establishment or attending one-of-a-kind performances with our talented crew aboard the ship. Set your phasers to fun !

    Beach Go-To's

A Captain's Holiday canvas tote holding a pair of Star Trek: Lower Decks flip flops, a NX-01 bucket hat, a handheld fan, Star Trek playing card, Starfleet Survival Guide, and a pair of sunglasses

For our ports of call days, leave everything stowed away in your cabin and pack a light bag like the Captain's Holiday tote , a Discovery uniform beach towel , Cetacean Ops flip flops , and Delta-embroidered sun visor . Some recommended light reading for the beach include the Starfleet Survival Guide , Star Trek: Lower Decks Crew Handbook , or recently released Time Magazine Star Trek Special Edition . Don't forget to toss in the Theory 11 Star Trek: The Next Generation playing cards .

With the temps high in the Caribbean, be sure to pack a good amount of sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses, and travel fan.

Miscellaneous Cruise Must Haves and Door Decor

Graphic illustration of miscellaneous cruise necessities like magnet hooks, a rubber duck, snacks, and a pair of lanyards

Keep your antiquated cash and gold-pressed latinum at home. While aboard the cruise ship, you'll be using your SeaPass to access your cabins and pay for your meals and drinks. Keep the SeaPass handy with a lanyard.

Keep track of all the memories you're making by jotting them down in a journal like your Starfleet Academy notebook and have a couple of Thank You notecards on hand to express gratitude for the crew ensuring a smooth and fun voyage like your cabin attendant. For some wholesome fun, leave some Star Trek rubber ducks around the cruise for other passengers to find in your very own scavenger hunt.

And speaking of wholesome cruise traditions to partake in, while on a un-conventional voyage with other like-minded Star Trek fans, decorate your cabin doors to your heart's content! The best part of Star Trek: The Cruise is seeing how everyone shows off their fandom. PRO TIP: All the walls and doors and ceilings are metal so make your cabin your own with a handful of magnet hooks.

    Star Trek The Cruise

Take a look at the gallery above for some inspiration, and don't forget to pack your own pieces of decor. Whether you're crafting your own pieces to build a Borg Cube-like cabin or picking things up for the Star Trek Shop like the United Federations of Planets flag , Starfleet recruitment poster , Beam Me In welcome doormat , or Enterprise Pride sherpa blanket , we can't wait to see Star Trek flair in a few week's time!

    Star Pride Itineraries

Star pride review, review of star pride.

The 1988-built (as "Seabourn Pride") cruise ship Star Pride is the first of all three identical Windstar yachts - together with the fleet mates Star Breeze (Seabourn Spirit) and Star Legend (Seabourn Legend) .

The vessel (IMO number 8707343) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311084000) and registered in Nassau .

    History - construction and ownership

Windstar Cruises is a luxury travel brand operating a fleet of smaller-sized ships (mega-yachts) with capacity up to 340 passengers. The company call at 150 ports throughout the Caribbean, Central America, South Pacific, Asia, Europe. Currently, Windstar is a subsidiary of Xanterra Parks and Resorts (USA's largest national and state park concession management company).

    Windstar Star Pride cruise ship

The 340-passenger ship Star Pride was purchased by Windstar in 2013. The boat was then leased back to Seabourn Cruises (her operator since 1988) for a year, until the transfer was completed in May 2014. Star Pride set sail as the first Windstar new power yacht, out of three.

    Decks and Cabins

Star Pride staterooms (156 total, in 13 grades) are all outside and in suite categories - the lowest being Porthole Suite (10 cabins). All cabins are with modern amenities including fully-stocked minibars, Wi-Fi Internet, smart HDTVs (infotainment system), spacious wardrobe with electronic safe box, phone (direct dial), large bathroom (double-sink vanity, bathtub, shower, WC-toilet, L'Occitane bath products), premium bedding sets (top-quality pillows and linens), fresh fruits and flowers.

The largest accommodations are the 3-Bedroom Grand Owners Suites (1375 ft2 / 128 m2 with included outdoor terrace).

The boat has 8 decks , of which 6 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Star Pride guests may choose from various inclusive dining options - AmphorA Restaurant, Yacht Club, Sky Bar & Grill. Windstar travelers usually like to dress up. There are 2 formal nights on weeklong cruises and 3 on fourteen-day voyages. On these nights, a lot of the men wear tuxedos. Women wear luxury cocktail dresses or ball gowns. Other nights are casually stylish (jacket for men, but tie optional; nice outfit for women), or casual (no jacket for men; sundress or slacks for women). For those who do not like formal nights, the Veranda Cafe offers a casually stylish alternative.

    Windstar Star Pride cruise ship

Follows the complete list of Star Pride restaurants and food bars.

    • AmphorA Restaurant (ship's dining room, open-seating; offers 5-course gourmet dinner menu which is changed daily; along with onboard-made bread, in all ports of call the executive chef goes to the local markets to shop for fresh ingredients)
    • Candles Cafe & Veranda (a smaller "dining room" which offers buffet-style breakfast and lunch, as well as a la carte menu through the wait staff; its indoor area is called "Candles Cafe" and features floor-ceiling panoramic windows; the outdoor seating area is called "Veranda" - in the evenings, it transforms into "Candles Grill" al-fresco steakhouse)
    • Star Bar (serves the top deck open-air-area).
    • Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso (deck 6 aft-portside-located specialty restaurant with an Iberian food menu)
    • Star Grill by Steven Raichlen (deck 8 midship-located alfresco dining venue serving complimentary BBQ food)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

While Star Pride offers the signature Windstar experiences (as the famous deck barbecue), she also promotes the company's product development initiative - intimate access to call ports, themed sailings and active interaction with villagers. Activities onboard are very limited and range from food market purchases to performances by local musicians. Public areas include the casino, library, computer center, WindSpa, fitness center, pool and three whirlpool tubs. The marina offers complimentary watersport equipment.

    Windstar Star Pride cruise ship

Follows the complete list of Star Pride lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

    • The Marina (retractable watersports platform for water skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking; the ship provides water rafts, wakeboards, paddleboards and a water trampoline island; the steel cage forms a swimming pool in the sea)
    • A Whirlpool (with sunbathing area and lounge chairs)
    • Card Room (bridge and board games); Library; Screening Room
    • Computer Center (discount Internet packages and rates per minute)
    • Lounge (ship's theatre/main show lounge for live evening entertainment)
    • The Boutique Shop (now Signature Shop) sells duty-free luxury fashion clothing and accessories
    • The Casino (gaming lounge aft on deck 6, with blackjack/roulette gambling tables, slot machines) was replaced with the Cuadro 44 restaurant.
    • Compass Rose (ship's main bar lounge with grand piano)
    • The Wellness Centre (WindSpa, Beauty Salon, Gym). WindSpa (operated by Steiner) has treatment rooms (for massages), Saunas, Steam Rooms.
    • The Fitness Center (with floor-ceiling windows; has free weights, treadmills, elliptical machines; offers complimentary exercise classes); Courtyard

    • The Yacht Club (Constellation Lounge with floor-ceiling windows for 270-degree views)
    • The Sun Deck (with padded luxury sun loungers and deckchairs).

    Itineraries

Star Pride itinerary program is based on Asian cruises with departures from Singapore and Hong Kong . The Windstar Pride ship also sails in the Eastern Mediterranean from Venice , Piraeus-Athens and Istanbul , with Suez Canal transit on repositioning.

    Star Pride Wiki

Star Pride was acquired from  Seabourn Cruises  and renamed from "Seabourn Pride". In 2013, Windstar announced that Seabourn Pride will be renamed "Star Pride" in May 2014. The ship left Seabourn on March 30, 2014, and entered Windstar's fleet on May 5. Seabourn Pride, just like the sisterships, was fitted with LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) - a non-lethal method created to fend off attackers.

In 2006, an article at the Forbes website declared Seabourn Pride's "New Year Cruise" the world's most expensive one in its cruising category.

The ship's June 2016 drydock refurbishment cost USD 4.5 million and included a full renovation of 2x Owner Suites (cabin amenities, fore-located private sundecks), redesigned AmphorA restaurant, renovated public spaces (Screening Room, Reception, lobby area, corridors and hallways). Ship's two Owner Suites were fully renovated, including their fore-located private sundecks.

WINDSTAR cruise ship reconstructions 2019-2020-2021 drydock refurbishments review

On November 15, 2018, Windstar Cruises announced the company's "Star Plus Initiative" - drydock refit and refurbishment program budgeted USD 250 million. The project was partially financed through Export Credit facility guaranteed by SACE Italy (financial and insurance products and services). The "Star Plus" drydocking project includes enlarging (stretching) and engine upgrades for the fleet's three Star-Class vessels (in brackets - completion dates) - Star Breeze (February 20, 2020), Star Legend (July 2, 2020) and Star Pride (November 20, 2020).

Windstar's "Star Plus" project increased the fleet's capacity by 24%. The project (completed in 2021 October) resulted in bigger capacity (254 to 320 passengers, 140 to 190 crew), increased GT tonnage/volume (9975 to 12995 tons), increased length (134 to 159 m), more staterooms (106 to 156), adding new venues and public spaces, machinery upgrades (new Wartsila marine diesel engines). The project was scheduled for the period October 2019 through November 2020 (later extended thru 2021) and conducted at Fincantieri's shipyards in Palermo (Sicily Island, Italy) and Trieste (Italy) .

The stretched Star Pride was delivered to Windstar on October 13, 2021, at Fincantieri’s Palermo yard.

The drydock lengthening included cutting each vessel in two and installing a new (prefabricated) midship section with length 25 m (83 ft). The vessel's LOA length was increased from 134 m (439 ft) to 159 m (522). The midship section has an additional elevator. These sections were built (pre-fabricated and assembled) in Trieste, then barged to Palermo to be inserted into the vessels.

Following the drydocks, each ship now has 2 new dining venues (Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, Star Grill by Steven Raichlen), new / expanded retail shopping space (Signature Shop), enlarged Gym (Fitness Center with Motion Studio for classes), expanded wellness complex (WindSpa by Steiner), new bar lounge (deck 5), larger sundeck and swimming pool (deck 7), new tender loading area (deck 3 midship), two new tender boats (90-seat each), new whirlpool and enlarged swimming pool (on deck 8), expanded and upgraded staff-crew areas and crew cabins. The two new dining venues are a specialty restaurant (Cuadro 44, aft-portside on deck 6, the former Casino area) and a casual outdoor BBQ restaurant (Star Grill, adjacent to Star Bar on deck 8).

The powerplants were upgraded from 4x Bergen diesel engines (model B33:45, combined power output 7,3 MW) to 4x Wartsila engines (model Wartsila 46F, combined output 5 MW) running on the cleaner ULSD (ultra-low sulfur diesel) fuel.

Each boat received 50 new cabins (to a total of 156), which (based on the total investment) means shipbuilding cost per berth USD 267,000. Among the new cabins are two Midship Owner Suites and two enlarged Forward Grand Owner Suites - all located on Deck 6. All existing staterooms were completely refurbished, including bathrooms, balconies, sliding doors, furniture, equipment. The new public spaces and staterooms were designed by the NYC -based "The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry".

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

    Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Related: Why Sea Cloud Spirit is a sailing vessel you'll want to try

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

    Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

    Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

    Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

So much for thinking they had crossed their final hurdle.

Guests onboard the Royal Caribbean cruise line were told their trip was canceled and were being sent home despite already being aboard the ship.

Royal Caribbean International notified guests onboard Radiance of the Seas that the ship would not continue on an already-abbreviated Alaskan cruise. The trip was canceled, and guests had to disembark, CruiseHive.com reported.

The ship was set to leave from Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 26, but an earlier adjustment due to technical difficulties allowed guests to board on embarkation day while the ship was to spend two days in port undergoing repairs.

The revised plan features a Sunday departure and an adjusted route, with calls to Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan and scenic cruising in the famed Inside Passage before returning on May 3, which was the original completion date.

But it was later announced that the trip was being canceled due to repairs for a technical issue. Guests had to leave the ship by 4 p.m. Sunday.

“As you are aware, our teams have been vigorously working to have Radiance of the Seas prepared to set sail on our shortened April 26th sailing,” the letter given to passengers in their staterooms read, the unofficial cruise site RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com reported.

“Despite our best efforts, circumstances beyond our control have delayed our sailing further. As a result, we’ll regrettably have to cancel our April 26th, 2024, cruise,” the letter concluded.

Guests will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare and a 100% future cruise credit that may be applied to any future Royal Caribbean sailing. Internet service aboard the ship was also open free of charge to allow for easier travel planning and offered a free open bar until debarkation.

The ship began to develop propulsion difficulties last week during a repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver, causing multiple stops to be scrapped due to a slower speed.
