20 Awesome Places to Visit in March in USA

Early spring is when you can enjoy iconic landscapes in manageable temperatures for less money than peak seasons, so I think it’s a win-win! From traveling around during March, here are my favourite spots to explore…

1. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

For a truly awe-inspiring experience, I’d recommend taking the winding dirt road through Antelope Valley in Southern California. Here, blankets of poppies carpet the ground in flames of red and orange, and 8 miles of foot trails weave through the captivating blooms.

Sadly, I can’t second-guess Mother Nature, and weather conditions greatly influence the poppy crop. Still, they typically bloom for ten weeks between late February and early May and peak for around three weeks between late March and early April.

Witnessing this breathtaking display is unforgettable in a good year. I suggest staying informed by checking the Antelope Valley Nature Preserve website as your visit approaches, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information on the flowers and their blooming status.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 150th St W, Lancaster, CA 93536
  • Average temperature – 19 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Capturing breathtaking shots of the vibrant and beautifully bloomed poppies.
  • Taking a walk along one of the trails that weave through the pretty flowers.
  • Checking out an exhibit at the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center filled with botanical watercolor paintings.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

Most romantic hotels in New Orleans

If, like me, you are a lover of literature, arts, and culture but not a fan of scorching heat and crowds, visit New Orleans this month. The city embraces the transition into spring with the big Mardi Gras celebrations beginning to wind down and many wonderful festivals emerging to replace them.

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival brings together budding writers and established playwrights for a program of masterclasses and performances of original works, culminating with the famous ‘Stella’ shouting competition in The French Quarter.

The LGBTQIA community celebrates its literary heritage in the famous Saints and Sinners festival, which also takes place this month. Wednesday at the Square and Buku Festivals curate unique, immersive musical talents; plenty is going on for foodies, too.

New Orleans is a vibrant city that embodies the spirit of springtime, so it is no surprise that this is the perfect time to enjoy it! I would also recommend staying in one of the many interesting boutique hotels, making your stay even more special.

  • Visitors’ Centre Address: 339 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA 70130
  • Average temperatures  – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Attending one of the lively and fun events/celebrations, such as Mardi Gras Day, Super Sunday, or St Patrick’s Day parade.
  • Getting a tourist pass and enjoying a discount on various activities and attractions across the city.
  • Watching a musical production at the famous and historic venue, Saenger Theatre.

3. Golden Isles, Georgia

Golden Isles, Georgia

The Golden Isles are four beautiful barrier islands between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. The islands rise out of a vast area of marshlands, giving the appearance of one continuous stretch.

The Isles are a melting pot of cultures, and this is what I love about it! During this month,  gentle breezes and spring sunshine make it the perfect time to get out and explore nature before it becomes too hot and crowded.

I recommend strolling through shady woodland, picnicking on sandy beaches, and watching the sun sink over the horizon – bliss!

Go nature spotting for rare Leatherback turtles, a plethora of birds, and leaping dolphins, or relax and enjoy some boutique shopping in Pier Village or fine dining in the quaint village of Redfern.

For original Victorian architecture and speciality shopping and dining, I suggest visiting historic downtown Brunswick, where brownstone townhouses and bright-colored awnings lend an old-fashioned vintage feel.

  • Visitor Centre Address: 529 Beachview Dr, St Simons Island, GA 31522
  • Average temperature  – 21 degrees
  • Climbing 129 steps to the top of the lighthouse on St Simons Island for picturesque panoramic views across the coast.
  • Visiting Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island and watching a spectacular colorful sky as the sun set.

4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia in spring time

It’s not always sunny in Philadelphia, but there’s a good chance it will be bright and fresh this month. I personally think this is the perfect time to visit the city, temperatures average around 12 degrees in the day so take a jacket you’ll be fine!

In my opinion, one of the loveliest sights this time of year is the swathes of cherry blossoms in West Fairmount Park. Here, y ou can enjoy a picnic and admire the manicured lawns, or stroll around the tranquil Japanese House and whimsical ponds and waterfalls, all under a fragrant canopy of blossom trees.

The springtime is also a great time to enjoy a craft beer in the early spring sunshine so I would highly recommend visiting one of the city’s many breweries and taking in some of the lovely historical streets in neighborhoods like Spring Gardens.

It’s also a great time to enjoy some local artists’ work in progress at Cherry Street Pier and hang out with arty types along the wonderful waterfront.

Drive-in movies are also a big thing in Philly; the milder temperatures mean lots of opportunities to see old and new cool films in this classic American way!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 599 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
  • Average temperature – 12 degrees
  • Catching a lively NBA game.
  • Trying the unique Dining in The Dark blindfolded tasting experience!
  • Visiting the eclectic indoor marketplace inspired by Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.

5. Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks, Alaska in March

Fairbanks is a truly vibrant river city in the very North of Alaska. It serves as the perfect base camp for the wilderness of Denali National Park…6 million acres of alpine forests, snow-capped mountains, and untouched nature.

The icy temperatures mean the crowds tend to come here in the summer, but in spring, you can see the city and surroundings at their finest, under the breathtaking colors of The Northern Lights!

It is also the season of midnight sun, endless sunsets and sunrises, and the World Ice Art Competition. I would also recommend enjoying the ice museum, hot springs, hot coffee, and many unique adventure sports!

I also suggest trying your hand at Ice Skating, Cross Country Skiing, or safely spotting wildlife in the wilderness. If you are lucky, you might see Grizzly Bears, Black Bears, Wolves, Moose and Caribou, and maybe even a golden eagle!

  • Visitor Centre Address: 101 Dunkel St, Fairbanks, AK 99701
  • Average temperature –  -3 to -19 degrees
  • Taking an Aurora tour or overnight experience to catch the magical dancing northern lights.
  • Warming up at the Chena Hot Springs in the outdoor pool surrounded by the fresh, crisp snow.
  • Checking out the sculptures created by artists from all over the world at the World Ice Art Competition.

6. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country flowers

The Hill Country stretches splendidly between San Antonio and Austin, encompassing beautiful landscapes, historic towns and villages, natural wonders, and amazing wineries.

During this month the  temperatures are pleasant and the wildflowers are in full bloom, especially the Texas Bluebonnets, lupin-like and a stunning shade of electric blue they are the official state flower.

Nestled amongst meadows of wildflowers and gentle hills are several stunning historical towns of German heritage. There are many to choose from, depending on your preferences. I personally think Boerne is a great town with a wonderful cavern at its center and lots of quaint boutique shops and cafes lining its Main Street.

The very German city of Fredericksburg oozes Bavarian charm. Kerrville is one of the oldest settlements in Texas and is perfect for history buffs. Finally, I suggest not missing Lake McQueene, which has waters that are perfect for swimming. You don’t want to miss it!

The Texans love spring, so as you travel through Hill Country, expect plenty of cook-offs, festivals, and cultural events to keep you entertained!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151

  • Exploring the Medina River by kayaking through the tall and winding bald cypress trees.
  • Tasting some of Texas’s best and award-winning spirits at a local distillery.
  • Driving through the Willow City Loop, which comes alive with color from the beautiful flowers.

7. Nantucket and Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts

Nantucket - most beautiful places to visit in Massachusetts

I would highly recommend avoiding the hordes of deep-pocketed tourists and visiting this iconic destination in the springtime! This month is a wonderful time to visit Cape Cod, as it is when the majestic humpback whales reside in the blue waters around the islands.

Averaging between 40 and 50 feet long, seeing these amazing creatures propel themselves out of the water is something you’ll never forget!

It won’t be hot, but that’s the trade-off of having the place virtually for yourself! Aside from the whales, I recommend just kicking back and enjoying the idyllic beaches, quaint fishing villages, sun-bleached harbor towns, and historic lighthouses for a much more reasonable price than during peak season.

You can also check out some of the legendary filming locations for Jaws on Martha’s Vinyard and get a glimpse of some of the crazy multi-million dollar summer estates of the rich and famous, all without battling through the crowds!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443

  • Going on a guided tour to see historic sites such as Oldest House, The Old Mill, and Greater Light.

8. Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas

Petit Jean State Park USA

The park is now a beautiful expanse of unique landscapes carved out by Cedar Creek and packed with unusual bluffs and canyons. It also has an impressive 95-ft waterfall that tumbles from the 100-acre Lake Bailey, created by Damming the Creek.

This month’s weather is temperate, the trees bloom, and the sunsets are spectacular. Temperatures hover around 17 degrees this time of year.

There are several rustic cabins and the central Mather Lodge, all built in the 1930s and available for accommodation, as well as designated camping and glamping, so I recommend choosing one for a truly cozy vacation!

Many gorgeous trails traverse the park and there is boating and Kayaking on Bailey Lake as well as two outdoor pools. I honestly think it’s the perfect accessible spring escape for outdoors lovers who find bigger parks daunting.

  • Average temperature  – 17 degrees
  • Visiting the indoor Petit Jean Farmers Market and sampling some delicious local produce.
  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot underneath the Natural Bridge along Seven Hollows Trail created from a rock formation.
  • Hiking down to the base of Cedar Falls to admire one of the biggest waterfalls in the state.

9. The Tidal Basin, Washington D.C.

Best places to visit in the USA in March/Spring

Each Spring, Washington D.C. ‘s tidal basin is transformed by acres of pink and white cherry blossoms, and I highly recommend a visit around this time!

Thousands of tourists are drawn to the nation’s capital yearly to witness the spectacle! Usually, the tree’s peak bloom is late March through early April.

To avoid heavy crowds and maximize beautiful photo opportunities, I recommend visiting the Tidal Basin early in the morning and catching the sun rising over D.C.’s iconic marbled monuments under blankets of fragrant petals!

Then, I suggest using the rest of the day to explore the amazing city full of green spaces, awe-inspiring architecture, and wonderful museums and sculpture gardens. If you have limited time, I recommend an open-top bus that will take you around all the famous presidential monuments and Arlington Cemetary.

I would recommend visiting some historic districts such as Georgetown, a famous university with atmospheric steps used in The Exorcist and DuPont Circle for eclectic nightlife, exciting dining, and wonderful art in The Phillips Collection.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone  (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperature – 12-19°C
  • Enjoying a bike ride around the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Renting a paddleboat and enjoying some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spending the day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival and seeing live entertainment amongst the flowers.

10. Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai Hawaii - best places to visit in March

A top vacation spot, I personally think this is the perfect time to enjoy Kauai’s lush vegetation and beautiful beaches without the summer crowds. Although Kauai is the wettest of the Hawaiian islands and March is still considered the rainy season, the rain typically comes in short bursts and the sun quickly returns.

If you aim for the end of the month you will likely experience little rain, warm temperatures, and lower prices as peak season begins in April. Although Kauai is small it is not called’ The Garden Island’ for nothing and its abundance of colorful blooms will not fail to delight!

Expect palm-fringed beaches, crystal clear waters, unique multi-colored canyons, rare wildlife, and plunging waterfalls…a little slice of paradise infused with the famed ‘Aloha’ spirit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 4-484 Kuhio Highway Kapaa ,  Hawaii ,  96746. Phone 808-822-5113
  • Average temperature – 22 degrees
  • Seeing the island from a fabulous helicopter tour overlooking the beach landscape.
  • Kayaking around Hanalei Bay, I also enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset.
  • Flying through through the native forests on a zipline which was a very adrenaline-pumping experience!

11. Fontainebleau State Park, Louisiana

Fontainebleau State Park

Treat yourself to a stay in an iconic wooden cabin on stilts in this beautiful State Park that stretches for 2,800 acres along the crystal shores of Lake Pontchartrain.

Historically a sugar plantation, Fontainebleau was named after the forest near Paris, the place of choice for centuries of French kings in their leisure time.

Of course, we commoners can enjoy the many peaceful pastimes on offer in the Louisiana version, it’s a popular spot for all things aquatic; boating, canoeing, swimming, and personally I would highly recommend just sunbathing on the unspoiled sandy beaches.

Visitors can stroll beneath the centuries-old oak trees and native cypresses or walk along the wooden pier to admire the lake’s crystal waters.

During this month,  the temperature is warm and the humidity fairly low, which makes it the perfect time to explore the 27 miles of hiking and biking trails along the Tammany Chase, which follows the route of the old railroad tracks.

I suggest bringing a picnic for a beautiful, tranquil day in idyllic surroundings, unbelievably less than an hour away from New Orleans!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 62883 LA-1089, Mandeville, LA 70448
  • Average temperature  – 22 degrees
  • Renting a paddleboard from Bayou Adventure and spending time on the water.
  • Spending a day at the beach and swimming and sunbathing.
  • Exploring the nature trails.

12. Providence Canyon, Georgia

Providence canyon Georgia

Georgia gets very hot in peak summer season and as it is not a massive park it can also get very crowded. For easier hiking temperatures and uncluttered photographs of the beautiful ‘Little Grand Canyon’ I think this month is the perfect month for a visit.

The park’s rock faces are especially spectacular due to the 143 varied shades that range from orange and red hues to pure white; catching the sun sinking behind them is a really special sight.

Visitors can enjoy 10 miles of trails that circumnavigate the canyon rim and take in some of the park’s other wonders, such as the cascading Providence waterfalls and the strange shells of old 1950s automobiles that are relics of another era.

For perfect clear night skies, I would highly recommend camping out in one of the areas around the canyons and witnessing the wonder of the stars without any light pollution to obscure them!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 8930 Canyon Rd, Lumpkin, GA 31815
  • Average temperature – 21 degrees
  • Experiencing the picturesque views whilst enjoying a picnic lunch at one of the viewpoints.
  • Visiting Dick’s Creek Falls, a stunning spot located just outside the park.
  • Hiking along the Canyon Loop Trail and seeing the incredible nine canyons along the 2.5-mile path with scenic landscapes.

13. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta CIty USA

Summer temperatures in Atlanta are pretty intense, so I personally think early spring is the perfect time to take advantage of this southern gem. As the Southeast’s cultural hub Atlanta is positively teeming with creativity, arts, and mind-blowing history, it’s also a foodie heaven!

Both buildings are now part of The Martin Luther King JR National Historical Park , and I think it’s a great place to stroll in springtime! Another beautiful place to admire this month in bloom is The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, whose landscaped grounds are budding with color in early spring.

The foodie scene in Atlanta reflects this passion and fusion of cultures and famous southern hospitality; you can find delicious and innovative food at every turn. I suggest leaving space for some Georgia Bourbon Pecan Pie from Pie Shop Downtown!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 267 Park Ave W NW, Atlanta, GA 30303
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Having fun at Atlanta Fair with carnival games, exciting rides, and delicious food.
  • Going on a themed dining experience with robot waiters and crafty cocktails!
  • Admiring the vibrant street art around the city where talented artists have created incredible murals.

14. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Saguaro National Park Arizona

Saguaro National Park is named for the iconic giant cactuses known to grow up to 78ft tall, although the average height is about 40ft.  Walking amidst these giants, especially as the sun sinks below the horizon, is an eerie and wonderful experience. For a great view of the Saguaro Forest, I suggest hiking up to the Valley View Overlook, which offers an amazing panoramic view of the Cacti.

If you want to get in amongst them, I would also recommend the Mica View Loop, which takes you right through the middle of these amazing plants!

This month, you have the bonus of all the beautiful wildflowers in bloom, splashing the desert landscape with color. You’ll also find ancient petroglyphs and an array of wildlife, from bobcats to venomous Gila Monsters…I’d suggest giving both a respectably wide berth!

Remember the park covers almost 100,000 acres and is split in two by the city of Tucson, for the best cactus action I suggest heading for the smaller western portion.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 2700 N Kinney Road, Tucson, AZ
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Exploring a variety of cacti through the winding path at the Cactus Garden Trail located at the visitor center.
  • Capturing an Instagrammable shot of a huge cactus on a hiking trail.
  • Taking a trip to Rincon Mountains for breathtaking views overlooking the unique cacti-filled landscape.

15. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, Kansas

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park

The badlands are a vast acreage of ancient wilderness that will take you back to when the Oglala Sioux tribe occupied the lands.

The landscape is arid and strange, with rare Niobrara Chalk outcrops rising from flat prairies like temples. The name ‘Little Jerusalem’ refers to a mile-long collection of these white rocks that rise in awe-inspiring 100 ft spires and cliffs, bringing to mind the ancient city.

During this month the temperature is mild and humidity low so I think it’s a great time to hike one of the two permanent trails and treat yourself to the best views without navigating summer crowds.

Aside from Little Jerusalem, there have been traces of life dating back as far as 85 million years, so I highly recommend looking out for amazing fossils of ancient giant clams and oysters!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: County Road 400 and Gold Road, Oakley, KS 67748
  • Average temperature – 15 degrees
  • Experiencing a Ranger-Guided Backcountry Hike, where I explored the off-trail paths and saw a different perspective of the rock formations.
  • Going on the short Overlook trail which provides breathtaking views across the park.
  • Walking the Life on the Rocks Trail and admiring two panoramic viewpoints along the natural, chalky rock surface path.

16. San Diego, California

San Diego Beach spring

I think San Diego is awesome for many reasons: it’s beautiful, laid back, rich in maritime history, and surrounded by gorgeous swathes of ocean and parkland!

During this month you can catch some amazing festivals such as Paddy’s Day and The Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival and enjoy the city’s many outdoor delights in the sunshine.

You’ll also get better rates on flights and accommodation by avoiding peak season F or totally chilled-out bohemian vibes I highly recommend Ocean Beach for cheap and delicious Mexican food, killer margaritas, and a real new wave ‘summer of love’/ surfy atmosphere.

Just out of the city, nature lovers will delight at the carpets of wildflowers in Anza Borrego Desert State Park or the flower fields at Carlsbad Ranch. It is also the perfect time to catch the immense Gray Whales on their migration back north.

I would suggest driving along the historic Route 101 and seeing how many you can spot or taking an organized tour from the marina.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone:  (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperature – 19 degrees
  • Taking a ride through the exquisite and colorful Carlsbad Flower Fields on a retro tractor.
  • Taking a sunset sail tour and enjoying the city’s landmarks, and have an unforgettable experience.
  • Exploring the Spanish-style village in Balboa Park, filled with museums, galleries, and gardens.

17. Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park, Utah

With intolerable summer temperatures of up to 100 degrees, The Arches National Park’s peak season is often unbearable for those not accustomed to the heat.

Add crowds to that; no matter how fabulous the landscape is, it can be a miserable experience! I personally think it’s wiser instead to head to the iconic park in early spring when temperatures are far more pleasant, and the crowds are yet to arrive.

The Arche’s strange prehistoric landscape has become synonymous with Utah, and the instantly recognizable ‘Delicate Arch’ is now the symbol for the whole state. With over 2000 of these otherworldly stone arches and relics of the nomadic Ute tribe, there is plenty to explore across the 119 square miles of the reserve!

Most trails are short and accessible except The Devils Garden Primitive Trail, which requires a slightly more seasoned hiker. For the ultimate Arches experience, I recommend trying to hit the park at sunset and seeing the whole thing cast in an ethereal orange glow. It is absolutely beautiful!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Ut-211, Canyonlands National Park, Moab, UT 84532, +1 435-259-4711
  • Average temperature – 16 degrees
  • Getting an Insta-worthy shot of the breathtaking mountain backdrop during the hike to the iconic Delicate Arch.
  • Taking part in the free Ranger-Led program.
  • Exploring an array of several scenic spots by adventuring along the Arches Scenic Drive.

18. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs USA

If you fancy yourself a bit of a hipster you’d better get to Palm Springs, a cool and artsy city long favored by the Hollywood jet-set for its glamorous elegance, sunshine, and healing springs.

The city, nestled in the beautiful Coachella Valley between 4 mountain ranges is particularly notable for its many examples of mid-century modern architecture, swanky boutique shopping, and world-class art….and golf of course.

While you’re there, I would suggest you don’t miss the amazing aerial tramway for stunning views across the entire valley, perhaps a mountaintop lunch, or the amazing Sunnylands Public Gardens and Mansion.

Although much of the mid-century architecture belongs to private owners you can still take in some amazing examples by taking a tour through the Tennis Club and Araby Cove districts.

There are so many things to do but a visit to Palm Springs would not be complete without making the most of alfresco dining in the city’s beautiful restaurants…my little tip, go for ones that are tucked away off main tourist routes and you’ll get superior quality for a fraction of the price.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees
  • Taking a break from the heat in Palm Springs Art Museum , filled with contemporary paints and sculptures.
  • Viewing the Tahquitz Canyon home to a magnificent 50-foot waterfall.
  • Getting a wellness pass and getting a discount from an array of spas!

19. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - March vacation ideas

The desert town of Sedona near Flagstaff, Arizona, is America’s answer to Glastonbury. During this month, I think hikers will delight in the perfect temperatures, rust-colored trails, and wildflowers in full bloom.

Surrounded by majestic red rock buttes and ancient pine forests, the town has become a haven for people in search of spiritual and metaphysical healing. The streets are lined with new-age shops and Native American-inspired treatment centers. I personally love it!

Sedona is believed to have several ‘Vortexes’, swirling centers of energy emanating from the red rocks. It is regarded as a cathedral without walls or a natural henge.

Here you can expect to find yoga retreats, hippy rituals, and all forms of spiritual healing, it is said that no matter what brings you to Sedona you will always feel lighter and brighter with your spirit soothed, uplifted, and restored!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Experiencing one of the best shopping spots in Sedona at the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.
  • Driving along the Red Rock Scenic Byway and checking out the stunning scenery and landmarks.
  • Going on a thrilling Pink Jeep Tour  and exploring the steeper trails in a cool wrangler!

20. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas

Palo Duro Canyon State Park Texas

A great location for hikers or adventure vacation, Palo Duro Canyon on the Texas Panhandle is the second largest Canyon in the country and I personally think this is a great time to visit for warm temperatures, fewer crowds and less rain too!

The park’s most iconic rock formation is called the lighthouse. It rises out of the ground in 300 ft of splendid rust-colored rock…in my opinion, the hugely popular lighthouse trail is the best way to view it and get amazing views out over the canyon.

I think it’s also worth extending your stay to overnight in one of the camping or glamping sites, as the night skies in this part of the world are truly phenomenal!

I would suggest looking out for the unmistakable herds of protected Texas Longhorn cattle that roam freely across the land. Adventure lovers might want to try the terrifying zip line that crosses the canyon between Dallas and New Mexico.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: State Hwy Park Rd 5, Canyon, TX 79015
  • Average temperature – 20 degrees
  • Mountain biking on one of the scenic trails.
  • Going on a fun zipline located near the park’s entrance.
  • Enjoying a night under the stars at Palo Duro Canyon State Park Campground.

For our 20th anniversary, I had big dreams of a romantic getaway to Greece , or a couples trip to Bora Bora, returning to our honeymoon destination. If you are looking for an anniversary trip, romantic getaway, couples trip, or honeymoon ideas a little closer to home, start with our picks for the most romantic resorts in the USA.

I’ve asked friends, travel advisors, and trusted frequent travelers for their recommendations on the best romantic getaways in the U.S. for a special milestone anniversary trip. These are our top picks:

1. Little Palm Island, Florida

When I stumbled on the website for Little Palm Island in the Florida Keys, I thought I hit the jackpot with everything that I wanted for our anniversary trip. A private island, our own tropical villa, and the most romantic atmosphere I can imagine within the continental United States. And then I looked at the price and realized I actually needed to hit the jackpot, or the lottery, to make even a splurge trip here a reality.

But if you are ready to spend, it is no surprise that Little Palm Island was included in the top resorts in the United States (and the World) by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

2. Amangiri, Canyon Point, Utah

Ever since spying the Amangiri hotel in a food magazine, my husband has been angling for a romantic getaway to this remote portion of Utah’s red rock country. Covering 600 acres of the vast and majestic Colorado Plateau, the Amangiri offers a desert landscape of canyons, mesas, ridges, and gorges.

Guests can choose between the modernist suites of Amangiri and the tented pavilions of Camp Sarika. To gain an appreciation of the landscape, you can tour slot canyons with Navajo guides, or observe powerful storytelling sessions and ritual dances by the fire in Monument Valley Tribal Park. Adventurers can also go canyoning, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, or enjoy water sports on Lake Powell. This is the perfect choice for those that enjoy spending time in nature and are active adventurers.

3. Bungalows Key Largo, Florida

Waterfront bungalows at Bungalows key Large

If you are craving a tropical setting but $2000+ a night is a little rich for your budget, head to Key Largo. Bungalows Key Largo is one of the few adults-only resorts in the United States. While it still costs a pretty penny, at least their price is all-inclusive.

Picture a waterfront bungalow with a private veranda featuring a large outdoor soaking tub as your romantic getaway retreat. If that doesn’t relax you, the Zen Garden Spa certainly should. If you want to book a bungalow for Valentine’s Day, guests can now add on a  Valentine’s Day Sunset Dinner Cruise on a luxury catamaran with live acoustic music and an elegant culinary experience.

4. Inn at Perry Cabin, St. Michael’s, Maryland

My friend Brianna recommends the Inn at Perry Cabin , on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This Belmond property offers understated luxury in one of the most beautiful areas of the east coast. The hotel’s interiors reflect the area’s maritime history, with plenty of cozy nooks and crannies to snuggle with your significant other.

The outdoor views are best enjoyed in one of the resort’s many Adirondack chairs with a glass of wine in hand, a perfect spot for enjoying the sunset. This resort is perfect for foodie couples who enjoy waterfront activities like yoga, kayaking, and sailing lessons.

5. Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California

The Jade Pool overlooking ocean at the Post Ranch Inn

My friend and luxury travel advisor Kristi Marcelle recommends the Post Ranch Inn for an adults-only romantic getaway near San Francisco. Located on a clifftop overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the romantic landscape of Big Sur, the Post Ranch Inn is ideal for romance, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

With just 40 rooms and homes, the resort offers rustic elegance and privacy. Wellness and relaxation activities include morning yoga, guided nature hikes, forest, and sound journey meditation, as well as garden tours and art walks. Guests can also relax and enjoy the view at the infinity pool or use the resort’s telescope to star gaze at night.

6. Blackberry Farm, Walland, Tennessee

Located on a pastoral farm near the Great Smoky Mountains, this Relais & Châteaux resort offers bucket-list-worthy luxury. This intimate resort has something to offer everyone — from archery to carriage rides to culinary classes to water sports.

Blackberry Farm’s “foothill cuisine” draws foodies worldwide to enjoy its three inventive restaurants, which bring together a collection of artisans – chef, master gardener, baker, cheesemaker, forager, butcher, and sommelier.

7. White Barn Inn, Kennebunk, Maine

Luxury travel advisor and friend Barbara Weindling recommends the White Barn Inn for those looking for a classic New England romantic getaway. This Auberge Resorts Collection hotel offers coastal luxury and award-winning dining in one of the most charming towns on the Maine coast .

While you are there, you can enjoy culinary experiences such as chocolate making, cocktail creations, and Sunday tea. Outdoors, guests can enjoy a private cycling tour or sailing along the coast. Or cozy up inside in the Couple’s Spa Suite for an afternoon of romance and pampering.

8. The Point, Saranac Lake, New York

Also recommended by my friend Barbara, The Point is the only Forbes Five-Star property in the Adirondacks . This Relais & Châteaux hotel offers only eleven rooms for an intimate experience.

Built by William Avery Rockefeller II and crafted of native timber and stone, today it is the only Adirondack Great Camp from the Gilded Age open to the public. Enjoy boating, fishing, tennis, waterskiing, croquet, badminton, swimming, wake surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking in the warmer months, or cuddle up with hot toddies by a roaring fire or champagne from the fully stocked ice bar on the lake after a day ice skating, curling and ice fishing in the winter.

9. Magee Homestead at Brush Creek Ranch, Saratoga, Wyoming

people gathered around a fire pit at sunset at Magee Homestead ranch

Another pick for outdoor adventurers, Kristi also recommends the adults-only Magee Homestead at Brush Creek Ranch. A member of Relais & Châteaux and recipient of the Forbes Travel Guide Five Star rating, Magee Homestead is an all-inclusive ranch that is part of the Brush Creek Ranch Collection.

Magee Homestead offers luxury accommodations in private cabins that once housed cow camp hands. You can enjoy gourmet culinary experiences, relaxing spa treatments, or outdoor adventures and exploration in Medicine Bow National Forest.

10. The Chanler, Newport, Rhode Island

The Chanler at Cliff Walk exterior with flowering bushes out front

Housed in a mansion on Newport’s famed Cliff Walk,  The Chanler  offers twenty distinctive Newport hotel rooms, which are elegantly decorated in various period styles. The Chanler has been on our wishlist for a romantic getaway in Newport since we first moved here and sampled the chef’s tasting menu at the hotel’s gourmet restaurant.

This Forbes Four-Star Hotel offers a luxury experience reminiscent of the Gilded Age. Stroll through the manicured gardens while you take in breathtaking ocean vistas, walk along the three-mile Cliff Walk, enjoy a gourmet meal, and sip an after-dinner drink at the fire pit and star gaze.

11. Inn at Newport Ranch, Fort Bragg, California

View of rocky coastline from an adirondack chair at the Inn at Newport Ranch

Located just 30 minutes from Mendocino on the Northern California Coast, the Inn at Newport Ranch is a local secret that luxury travel advisor Kristi Marcelle first clued me into and is perfect for a California romantic getaway .

The ranch encompasses seven microclimates on 2,000 acres set along one-and-one-half miles of rugged coastline, offering plenty of space to spread out and explore. Catering to only 26 guests in total, this intimate resort offers big views, along with 20 miles of trails for mountain biking or off-roading. Dining is another highlight, and right now meals can even be delivered to your patio for more privacy.

12. White Elephant, Nantucket, Massachusetts

White Elephant hotel from the water with boats in the harbor

The iconic White Elephant has been named among the finest luxury hotels on Nantucket Island for decades and is a popular romantic getaway destination for those seeking New England island charm. This waterfront resort offers spacious suites with private balconies overlooking the harbor, as well as private garden cottages.

From the resort, it is easy to enjoy the beach, shop in Nantucket Town, or take in the views at the Brant Point Lighthouse. Guests can also relax by the outdoor heated pool, hop on a bike and explore the area, sip cocktails on the Harborside Lawn, or rejuvenate in the world-class spa.

13. San Ysidro Ranch, Santa Barbara, California

With 500 acres and 17 miles of hiking trails nestled between the mountains and ocean, San Ysidro Ranch is a perfect romantic escape.

The resort offers intimate cottages scattered around lush gardens, each individually decorated with antiques. Many offer large private decks, indoor/outdoor rain showers, sunken hot tubs, heated floors, and private gardens.

14. The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia

Living room of the Sea Island suite at The Cloister

We have been debating an anniversary trip to The Cloister at Sea Island for some time. I love the Golden Isles of Georgia and since Sea Island is restricted to owners and guests only, it offers both luxury and more intimacy. The Cloister offers three charming settings of accommodations, featuring elegant and unique Spanish Mediterranean décor.

Guests can enjoy five miles of private beach, the adults-only swimming pool, a round of golf, or a couples massage at the Forbes Five-Star Spa Sea Island. For a romantic evening, try horseback riding on the beach followed by dinner and a rose petal turn-down service.

15. Miraval Arizona, Tucson, Arizona

17. Auberge de Soleil, Rutherford, California

The “Inn of the Sun” is nestled within a terraced, sun-kissed hillside amid 33 acres of heritage olive and oak trees, in Napa wine country. The hotel’s 50 contemporary guestrooms and suites effortlessly blend relaxed sophistication with understated elegance, resulting in a romantic getaway destination.

Auberge du Soleil is the dream of French restaurateur, Claude Rouas, and The Restaurant has maintained its legacy as a “must-experience” culinary destination for more than 40 years. Couples can enjoy a private wine tasting, an art walk in the sculpture garden, a picnic in the park, a scenic hike, or a bike ride on the Napa Valley Vine Trail.

18. Dunton Hot Springs, Dolores, Colorado

Dunton Hot Springs is not your typical romantic retreat. This perfectly restored ghost town features exquisitely-furnished log cabins and a saloon serving gourmet food.

Nestled in an alpine valley deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies , guests can enjoy challenging hiking trails followed by pampering massages. Of course, all must use one of the five ways to “take the waters” — including inside the restored 19th-century Bathhouse, under the stars at the source, in the pool outside the Bathhouse, in the pool behind the Dunton Store cabin, and inside Well House cabin.

19. The Inn at Little Washington, Washington, Virginia

This Relais and Chateaux, Forbes Double 5 star, and Double AAA 5 Diamond property is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains not far outside of Washington D.C. The Inn at Little Washington , features eighteen bedrooms and suites, created by London stage and set designer Joyce Evans.

From Yulia of That’s What She Had

For me, the perfect couples’ trip in the US is having the opportunity to walk with my beloved around the city hand-in-hand.

Not many American cities give you this opportunity, but Boston does which makes it an ideal American romantic getaway.

Best of all, Boston has a harbor! You can enjoy a dinner of freshly caught lobsters at sunset and then walk by the waterfront.

Does this sound good? Well, here are a few more ideas about how to spend time with your significant other in Boston.

Have a dinner at the Omni Parker House Restaurant where, as the legend suggests, Kennedy proposed to Jackie Bouvier and where the original Boston cream pie was created over a hundred years ago.

Couples who share a love of cinema can check out the filming locations of their favorite movies.

For example, did you know that you can sit on a bench in the Boston Public Garden where the characters of Matt Damon and Robin Williams sat in  Good Will Hunting ?

And while you are in the Public Garden, take a ride on a swan boat, one of Boston’s iconic attractions.

You can also stop by the bar where Will Hunting and his friends had a beer after work in the same movie.

Other romantic things to do in Boston include visiting the beautiful Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, strolling along the Harborwalk, and even enjoying a sunset cruise overlooking the city .

Consider heading to a show in the theatre district, or heading to the North End to enjoy Italian-American food and beautiful architecture.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.

Saranac Lake

From Danila of Travelling Dany

Saranac Lake is a cute city nestled among 46 High Peaks, Upstate New York.

If you are planning a road trip to the Adirondacks National Park , you can reach it by driving for about two hours from the Big Apple.

The difference between NYC and the amazing forest is striking: it feels unreal that you’re still driving in New York State!

A massive clock tower welcomes visitors to this quaint little town, full of flowers and smiling faces.

Its main street is the perfect spot where you can walk hand in hand at night, with your significant other, crossing wooden bridges, and admiring historical buildings.

Saranac Lake, one of the most beautiful – and less touristy – towns in the Adirondacks, is absolutely breathtaking in the fall: foliage in this area lasts longer than in any other part of the States!

If your beloved one is a hiking addict, you definitely should try one of the trails starting from Saranac Lake.

Saranac Lake, Adriondacks New York in the fall, with houses nestled against the lake shore, taken from across the water. Upstate NY in the fall in is one of the most romantic USA trips to take!

The difficulty goes from easy to moderately hard and the forests are full of deer and squirrels!

The perfect spot to spend a romantic vacation in Saranac Lake is the Ampersand Bay Resort.

Wooden cabins on the shores of Lower Saranac Lake become romantic love nests where you can spend your evenings enjoying the jacuzzi or drinking hot cocoa next to the fireplace.

Because Saranac Lake is one of those lovely towns where everyone knows each other, and the food scene reminds you of the old times, you won’t have any problem at all in finding the best foodie spots.

One of my favorite breakfast places in town is Origin Coffee: they bake homemade muffins every morning!

The perfect restaurant for dinner is Blue Moon Café , owned by an Italian-American couple who loves to cook and chat with their guests.

Be prepared to be treated with the best food: from the large servings alone you can definitely tell their Italian heritage!

Where to Stay in Saranac Lake

  • Hotel Saranac: This historic hotel was built in 1927 and has a classic stately home feel. There is a great bar and restaurant and most rooms have views of the lake
  • Franklin Manor: Another historic building perfect for your trip to Saranac Lake. Rooms are huge and feel like a luxury bedroom you may dream of at home. It is also privately owned with that personal touch.

No, not  Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster-loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

If you and your partner are looking for a city vacation that also offers beautiful nature and a very relaxed, laid-back vibe, Portland is a fantastic choice.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this romantic getaway in the USA, you absolutely can.

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!

New York City

From James of Travel Collecting

As one of the most famous and electric cities in the world, there’s no doubt that an action-packed weekend in NYC (or even a full honeymoon trip–both are popular) makes for an excellent romantic trip in the US for couples of all kinds.

Whether you and your partner are museum hoppers, foodies, park lovers, viewpoint seekers, or all of the above, New York City has plenty to offer!

For something memorable, start the day by sharing one of the enormous pastry baskets when you have breakfast at the famous Balthazar in SoHo .

This beautiful restaurant with enormous antique mirrors, red leather banquettes, and wait staff in long white aprons will transport you to another century.

kate storm spinning in front of manhattan bridge in brooklyn, a must see duing 4 days in nyc

For something uniquely New York, wander hand in hand through Central Park, then in summer rent a boat at the Loeb Boathouse and row around the lake before enjoying a romantic lunch at the lakeside restaurant.

In winter, go ice-skating at Wollman’s Rink before having lunch at the nearby Palm Court restaurant at the famous Plaza Hotel.

Hop over to the  Metropolitan Museum of Art for a coffee in their café overlooking the American wing or on the rooftop terrace overlooking Central Park in summer

If you’re lucky enough to have your trip for 2 overlap with New York at Christmas , don’t miss the chance to stroll hand-in-hand past the city’s legendary decor.

Of course, no romantic getaway in NYC is complete without admiring the skyline from above at a classic spot like the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock , or from a trendy angle like what you’ll find at Summit One Vanderbilt !

If you are downtown, you can rent Citibikes and cycle along the Hudson River then stop for lunch and a glass of wine at  Battery Gardens  restaurant with wonderful views of the harbor sparkling in the sunshine and the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

Don’t miss the opportunity to take in a Broadway show with your partner, either!

Finish a perfect romantic getaway with a cocktail at the Aviary bar on the 35 th  floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel where the views of midtown are to die for, or at Park in the Meat Packing District for a downtown experience in their covered garden or fireside bar.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.

Tiny, beautiful Nantucket is perfect for couples looking for a small island boasting both an adorable town center and sparkling beaches for their romantic getaway.

Located off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Nantucket is a classic summer retreat and one of the  best places to visit in New England .

While you’re there, consider renting bikes to explore the island together, tracking down all three of Nantucket’s beautiful lighthouses, visiting the Whaling Museum, and of course, enjoying a lobster roll or two!

The absolute best time of year to visit Nantucket is during the island’s famous hydrangea season, which typically runs from late June through most of July (though of course, it can vary).

A 4th of July trip to Nantucket, while certainly a splurge, is easily one of the most romantic US getaway ideas!

Plan a photo shoot with the beautiful flowers and idyllic New England architecture to preserve your memories!

Where to Stay in Nantucket

Niagara Falls

Dial it back a few decades, and Niagara Falls was  the  place to take a honeymoon in North America–and while it’s less iconic on the honeymoon scene now, it’s still a wildly romantic place!

While this blog post does cover romantic destinations in the USA specifically, no discussion of couples vacations to Niagara Falls is complete without pointing out that while the portion of Niagara Falls located in the States is lovely, it’s well worth bringing your passport along and crossing the border into Canada as part of your trip!

However, with boat tours, hiking trails, Old Fort Niagara, and more available on the New York side, it’s safe to say that even a strictly American couples trip to Niagara Falls has plenty of romance to offer.

Don’t miss the Cave of the Winds Experience that will take you right up to Bridal Veils Falls while you’re there!

Prepare to get soaked–but that’s an excellent excuse to relax in a hot tub with a glass of wine, great views, and your partner afterward.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

  • Stateside – The Butler House: For classic romantic accommodation this is the one to go with in the American side of Niagara Falls. Built in 1910 is the historic craftsman style, this is a cute and cozy hotel for your trip. Location wise you also can’t beat this, just 10 minutes walk from the American Falls and a mile from the International Rainbow Bridge to Canada.
  • Canada – Hilton Fallsview: While not the greatest Hilton experience you might expect, but definitely worth it for the views. Expect the usual Hilton features of a good quality hotel but look over the as-close-as-you-could-get views of Niagara Falls.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your couples’ weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

South Pointe Pier in Miami Beach, with view of downtown on the far left and South Beach on the right--definitely visit during your 3 days in Miami!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider  taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For couples who hope to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an  extra  long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA (more on that option below!).

New Orleans

From Margie of DQ Family Travel

The ever-unique and dynamic city of New Orleans, where music spills out from every corner and the scent of food lingers in the air 24 hours a day, is absolutely one of the most romantic cities in the USA.

NOLA has such unique architecture that walking through the streets and seeing the French and Spanish influence that certain parts of the French Quarter can feel like you’re in a European city.

Due to that European influence and the Creole culture that developed, the food in New Orleans is one of a kind.

Among the best things to do is walk through the Garden District or the French Quarter and sit down to eat some beignets, crawfish, jambalaya, fried oysters, or a shrimp po’boy.

Unsurprisingly, New Orleans is home to one of the top food scenes in the country.

The arts scene is also thriving in New Orleans as well. Walking through many parts of the city, you can find local painters and crafters selling their work, as well as plenty of beautiful bookstores .

kate storm standing in front of a nola garden district mansion during a romantic 3 days in new orleans la

The many public fountains and squares give the city a charming feel and people-watching can be quite interesting.

Since New Orleans is located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, you can enjoy a peaceful jazz cruise on the river as part of your trip!

At night, the city comes alive with street performers and sidewalk bars to enjoy a cocktail or two. Listening to a jazz band is a great idea while in New Orleans.

There is no shortage of music anywhere you go as restaurants are often playing some type of classic New Orleans jazz.

Overall, New Orleans is a fantastic city to enjoy with a loved one and stroll through the streets, eating, drinking, and enjoying its’ unique charm.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

From Allison of Eternal Arrival

While Nashville is a popular option for friends’ trips and girls’ getaways because of the fun nightlife, a Nashville weekend getaway  is also a solid choice for US couples looking for a unique romantic trip.

Music-loving couples will enjoy the abundance of music-themed museums as well as nightlife options.

Stroll hand-in-hand through the Country Music Hall of Fame or visit the Johnny Cash Museum for a unique insight into the artistic genius who gave the world “Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire.”

While the honky-tonks on Broadway are always a raucous good time, couples would be better suited with a romantic visit to the Grand Ole Opry, a thrice-weekly live concert and radio show.

It’s the longest-running radio broadcast in United States history and being part of it is great fun–be sure to take the tour backstage!

close up of banjos being played

Other romantic things for couples to do include strolling the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, which has beautiful views over downtown Nashville.

Couples will also love strolling around Centennial Park with its replica of the Parthenon.

Patient Instagram husbands will endure being dragged to the Gulch, a vibrant district with tons of colorful walls and street art including the famous “Nashville wings.”

Finally, couples can stuff their face with delicious Nashville BBQ – two of my favorite spots are Acme Feed & Seed and Martin’s BBQ.

Whatever you do, though, be careful with Nashville’s famous hot chicken: the resulting stomachaches from trying chicken too far out of your comfort zone are far from romantic!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Hutton Hotel: Book into this stylish hotel for your romantic trip, relax on the hotel balcony, or stroll 10 minutes to Music Row.
  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details. Many rooms have balconies with views of the city.

Without a doubt, Savannah is one of our favorite romantic getaways in the USA.

Dripping Spanish moss, Savannah’s 22 beautiful town squares, stunning antebellum architecture, and an epic food scene all contribute to making Savannah one of the most romantic cities in the USA.

During a weekend in Savannah with your beloved, be sure to stroll through the lovely Forsyth Park and down Jones Street (often called the most beautiful street in the USA!).

At night, give yourselves an excuse to hold each other tight on a ghost tour!

Art lovers can consider a visit to the Telfair Museum of Art or shopSCAD, the store run by the students of the well-known Savannah College of Art and Design, or browse the boutiques along Broughton Street.

Of course, no romantic trip to Savannah could be complete without at least one fantastic southern meal– Savannah’s restaurants are legendary in the south.

The Olde Pink House, The Grey, and Elizabeth of 37th are all popular romantic choices for a bit of a splurge, and Alligator Soul is a great option for more adventurous eaters.

For dessert, consider stopping by the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream, which has been a beloved Savannah tradition for nearly 100 years!

If ice cream isn’t your thing, consider a visit to one of Savannah’s charming coffee shops or to City Market instead–among other treats, City Market features candy stores selling pralines, one of the most well-known desserts in Savannah.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House: For your trip to Savannah you absolutely have to stay in one of the historic houses, this hotel is a perfect choice. Built in 1851 this is a staple part of Savannah’s history, rooms are decadent and cozy, and the hotel offers a nightly wine reception in the library and cocktails in the bar.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites: Another wonderful hotel in Savannah’s historic district, this provides a modern refresh of a classic luxury hotel. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and a fabulous complimentary breakfast is served on the hotel terrace each morning.

Few other places in the country rival Key West for popular romantic getaways in the USA.

Key West is the land of “Southernmost”: Southernmost Highway, Southernmost Brewery, Southernmost Tattoos.

Understandable, as this is the southmost point in the continental United States that you can reach without ever leaving your car!

Key West is located just 90 miles from Havana, Cuba and, despite the touristy reputation, it can be an exotic and romantic destination for couples.

The island has no shortage of exciting history and tourist attractions.

Some of the more famous things to do in Key West include the Southernmost Point Buoy and Historic Marker, Duval Street, Ernest Hemingway House and Museum, The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and the Key West Lighthouse.

Head out to Malloy Square for a romantic sunset. It is a popular place to view street performances, all while sipping coconut or pineapple drinks and snacking on fried conch bites.

And of course, no trip to Key West would be complete without trying a slice of Key Lime Pie (you might not want to bother splitting one, though–better for the relationship to each get your own!).

You can have a romantic moment with your loved one here.

Even though there are often hundreds of other people here, magical things can still happen!

If you are looking for a day trip gateway from Key West, we highly recommend an excursion to  Dry Tortugas National Park . It is another romantic place to enjoy while you’re in Key West!

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the most romantic getaways in the USA.

The city is filled with southern charm, great food, colorful historic houses, gardens, parks, and much more, all perfect for exploring with your partner.

As one of the oldest cities in the south, Charleston is packed full of history–though much of it is unsurprisingly quite dark.

Taking a historic walking tour with your significant other is an absolute must.

Learning about the trials and tribulations the city endured over the years is not only educational but makes you appreciate its history even more.

The classic architecture takes you back in time, giving the city so much personality.

The lovely colors and architectural features make for great couples’ pictures–Rainbow Row is one of the most popular photo spots in Charleston , and it’s no surprise why.

Rainbow Row in Charleston USA, a row of colorful houses. These are pink, purple, and green from left to right. Charleston is one of the best weekend trips for couples in USA!

One of the absolute best things to do in Charleston is to eat! The food is unbelievable and your days in Charleston should be food-centric.

Make sure to make reservations in advance if you want a great romantic dinner at well-known restaurants like FIG. Getting into the more popular restaurants can be difficult.

Of course, Charleston’s location near the beach is also a big draw for couples looking for romance: Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, and the Isle of Palms are all at your fingertips when visiting Charleston.

In the end, Charleston is a fun, charming city and is the perfect weekend getaway with your significant other.

Where to Stay in Charleston

Battery Park, the first stop on this 3 day charleston itinerary

Of all of the romantic USA weekend trips covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a couple divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to plenty of wonderful hikes in the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, makes it a fabulous US weekend destination for couples who are outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a romantic destination not to be missed.

For a beautiful stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway close to Asheville, hike the short trail to Craggy Pinnacle for sweeping 360-degree views of the mountains and an opportunity for some incredible couples photos.

North Carolina Coast

Whether you’re visiting classic Outer Banks beach towns like Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head, heading a bit further south to the Crystal Coast to visit places like Beaufort and Atlantic Beach , or even heading all the way south to Wilmington, there’s no doubt that the North Carolina Coast offers an incredible chance for romance.

Lined with small beach towns, historic lighthouses, excellent seafood, and even unique attractions like wild horses that live on deserted barrier islands, the North Carolina Coast is an unbeatable destination for a southern USA romantic getaway.

… And you can enjoy all that the NC coast has to offer without the prices of popular places further south in Florida or further north in New England.

Kate Storm in a floral dress on a boardwalk, one of the best things to do in Beaufort NC, with sailboats in the background

While you’re there, consider driving at least part of the stunning Outer Banks Scenic Byway, climbing to the top of a lighthouse or two for an incredible view (we’re partial to Cape Lookout ourselves), enjoying the sunset from a boat, and spending plenty of time with your toes in the sand.

If you start your trip to the North Carolina Coast in Raleigh, you may be able to add other cool stops in Eastern NC as you make your way to the beach!

Consider visiting New Bern for its historic downtown, or Kinston to eat at Vivian Howard’s celebrated Chef and the Farmer restaurant (be sure to make reservations well in advance!) before making your way to the coast.

Where to Stay on the North Carolina Coast

With its beautiful downtown (don’t miss a chance to stroll along the riverwalk!), its huge prevalence of elk living in and around the town, its beautiful lake, and the world-class nature of nearby hiking opportunities, Estes Park belongs on any bucket list.

It’s also perfect for couples looking for a mix of attractions: while the outdoors is most prominent, Estes Park itself also has plenty of restaurants and shops to enjoy!

While in Estes Park, be sure to stop by the historic Park Theatre, consider a whitewater rafting trip, go for a scenic drive, and check out one (or more) of the town’s local breweries.

San Francisco

From Jyoti at Story at Every Corner

San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and definitely one of the most romantic getaways in America!

The first thing you’ll notice is San Francisco’s lovely cool weather (just be sure to avoid the June Gloom–the best “summer” month in San Francisco is actually September).

Throughout much of the year, the air is so crisp it fills up the heart with love and happiness.

There is so much to love about San Francisco, it’s a challenge to list a few of the most romantic aspects of the city.

Of course, most couples on a romantic getaway will want to start with San Francisco’s most famous landmark: enjoy the many vantage points and views of the world’s most recognizable bridge, each offering its unique perspective.

Painted ladies of San Francisco at sunset with skyline in the background, one of the best places to visit when spending 3 days in San Francisco CA

For example, walk on the Golden Gate Bridge, picnic on Chrissy Field under the bridge, hike in Lands End state park, cruise on the Bay, walk around Treasure Island, or take a Segway Ride for many views of the bridge.

Not too far from the Golden Gate Bridge is the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts.

It’s so calming to walk and admire the views or lie on the grassy hills, watch the swans, and have a picnic.

In the midst of the busy city of San Francisco are the enormous Golden Gate Park and its many attractions such as the Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Lloyd Lake, the Dutch Windmill and the beach on the Pacific Ocean.

Oregon Coast

From Sarah of Discover the Pacific Northwest

With an abundance of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and mountains plus dozens of quaint towns and hundreds of wineries, Oregon is a state made for romance.

However, the most popular destination for a US romantic getaway in the state has to be the beautiful Oregon Coast .

Oregon has 363 miles of stunning coastline to explore full of fabulous beaches, scenic harbors, iconic lighthouses, pristine parks, and soaring sand dunes.

There are also dozens of charming seaside towns offering a romantic home base from which to explore.

Historic Astoria is the closest coastal town to Portland and offers plenty to do including an old waterfront trolley, a thriving arts community, and lots of great restaurants and craft breweries.

Seaside is a true beach town with a fabulous boardwalk and nearby Cannon Beach boasts the famous “Haystack Rock.”

One car driving along the oregon coast as shot from above

Newport is probably the best-known and most popular coastal town for good reason as it has an iconic main street full of great seafood restaurants and boutique shops plus a bustling fisherman’s wharf.

And this just gets you to the central coast, the list of lovely towns continues as you go further south.

Some of the top sights to see are Ecola State Park, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Oregon Dunes Recreational Area, Three Capes Scenic Drive, and the Tillamook Cheese Factory to name just a few, and they all make incredible stops for USA romantic getaways.

Of course, a romantic coastal getaway is not complete without a seafood feast or two!

Our top tip is to stop at Kelly’s Brighton Marina to catch some crab and clams then pick up wood for a beach fire to cook it up and watch the sunset.

Where to Stay on the Oregon Coast

  • Cannon Beach – Ecola Creek Lodge: A great mix of motel and self catering, this lodge is close to Ecola State Park and offers free parking. There is a pretty deck to enjoy the summer sun.
  • Tillamook – Tillamook Bay City: This is a great place to book into a yurt and enjoy the outdoors life for your stay. The yurts are cosy and surprisingly spacious, definitely worth trying for something different.

Catalina Island

From Megan of Bobo & Chichi

When you think of romantic places for a couples’ vacation, your mind might naturally gravitate toward islands–for very good reason!

Little do people realize that the US has its own romantic island getaways, including Catalina Island off the coast of southern California.

The tiny town of Avalon on Catalina Island is only 1 square mile and packed full of things to do for a romantic getaway with your lover.

Some of the best things to do in Avalon include kayaking through the harbor, ziplining with ocean views, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and an unforgettable movie theater in the beautifully restored Casino.

Get a private cabana at Descanso Beach Club where you can have drinks and food delivered to you right on the beach looking over the Pacific Ocean.

Consider staying in the gorgeous Mt Ada Bed and Breakfast owned by the Wrigley (yes, the gum family and former owner of Chicago Cubs) family overlooking the harbor and island

If you and your honey are looking for a romantic destination in America, look no further than Las Vegas, NV.

The area is, of course, known for gambling and being “Sin City” but it is also a very romantic place to visit.

It is the only city in the world where you can combine the romance of Rome, Paris, Venice, and more into one (quirky) locale.

Perhaps the most romantic activity in the city is a private gondola ride in the Venetian/Palazzo hotel on the strip.

You and your boo can take a ride for two down the hotel’s canal while being beautifully serenaded by your gondolier.

If you are in the mood for relaxation, you can book a couples massage in the spa of any of the large hotels on the strip.

You can also spring for an in-room massage if you’d like something more private.

If skyline views are more your thing, you can get a killer view of the city from the High Roller at the Linq while sipping cocktails in a semi-private cabin.

You and your partner can also scale the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel and see the twinkling lights of the city from their observation deck.

Romantic dinners are also on the menu, too!

Grab dinner at the Paris hotel on the 11th floor with jaw-dropping views of the strip, or venture a little off the strip to Top of the World restaurant in the Stratosphere Hotel to get a bird’s eye view of the entire city.

The Barrymore near the Convention Center, Twist in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, or any of the restaurants in Wynn Hotel’s adult-only restaurants are also sure to spark a mood.

If the feeling of love overwhelms you during your trip, Las Vegas has several top-notch wedding venues that can do everything from a quickie wedding with Elvis (witness provided) to a full wedding complete with an audience and small orchestra.

No worries if you didn’t pack a dress and tux–the city of romance can take care of that too!

… And no worries if you’re already married, either: a spontaneous vow renewal with fun photos can make for quite the memorable souvenir!

About Kate Storm

Image of the author, Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

15 thoughts on “31 of the Most Romantic Getaways in the USA (Couples’ Vacation Ideas!)”

Hi Kate, this is an amazing collection of getaways. I’ll pin it and refer to it for local getaways with friends and girl friends too. Thanks for compiling it and include me.

Anytime, Jyoti!

Love this list! However, as a local I have to point out that the market in Seattle is called pike place market, not pike street market. Small difference I know but it matters with all the history about this amazing market.

Thanks so much, Shannon! Made that update. 🙂

Super surprised to not see San Antonio on this list!

These are some great places listed!

We do love San Antonio (we actually lived there for a couple of years!). The food there is just incredible.

Yeah there’s nothing mentioned about Texas but you can talk about how great Chicago is visit the Hill Country and you will find out

Funny you should mention the Hill Country, because we are living in it right now! We actually run a whole second travel blog all about Texas, you can find us at https://www.lonestartravelguide.com for that. 🙂 I hadn’t noticed we had a lack of Texas in this post, I’ll have to add some when we update it later this year.

Seattle has Gasworks park, not Glasworks. Just in case someone is looking for it.

Thanks! Fixed. 🙂

Also, Fremont, not Freemont. I lived in Seattle and environs for 52 years and moved to Idaho to retire and be closer than 800 miles away to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. I am surprised you didn’t also mention Jackson, Wyoming as a place to get away to! It’s turned into quite the foodie place, too. It’s also called “Jackson Hole” by many people.

If we covered everywhere romantic in one post, we’d have a post hundreds of destinations long! We do love Jackson Hole, though–it’s listed on our USA honeymoon ideas post. 🙂

Great information for all, but I thought Charlotte,NC could have been another place in NC that I have found to be very romantic.

I found this to be very helpful…I took tons of notes!!!

Thank you 😊

Thanks, Sarah! Hope you have a great time exploring the country!

By:   Greg Mattson ,  ERV Editor - Updated: Aug 26, 2023

It's time to start looking at some vacation ideas for March 2024. We've put together some tips on where to go for a great early spring getaway.

Resort Getaway in Mexico in March

March of course is spring break  time (in many places, the peak will be in the first half of the month, but can extend right up until March 30, 2024), and a zoo in places like Cancun, Key West and Panama City FL. So in the name of R&R, we've chosen some March vacation destinations that offer a quieter and more relaxed getaway. And because it's high season, booking ahead is essential.

Whether you’re celebrating 12 months of marital bliss or your 50th anniversary, marking the milestones as you continue your journey through life together is an annual excuse to make even more memories.

So forget presents. For travel lovers, true romance means hitting the road. Swap cufflinks for cultural connections and flowers for far-flung adventures with these wedding anniversary trip ideas inspired by traditional gifts.

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a wide-angle shot of Trinity College Library, Dublin

1 or 2 year(s) – paper: Dublin

You’re a year or two (depending which side of the Atlantic you live on) into the new chapter of your lives and so far, so good. The perk: you’ve made it to the grand customary gift status that is ‘paper’. But instead of an embossed journal or letter-writing set, why not treat yourselves to an experience that’s really worth writing home about?

Head to Dublin : This Unesco City of Literature is home to effortlessly romantic bookshops like the Winding Stair and Ulysses Rare Books , not to mention the beautiful Trinity College Library .

Alternative option: Go to Japan for shōji , rice-paper rolls and origami.

How to find ‘real’ traditional Irish music in Dublin

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a couple hold hands on a ranch in Texas.

3 years – leather

Cowboy carousing might not be the most romantic anniversary activity but hey – this ain’t your first rodeo. Mix things up for your third anniversary and lasso your loved one on a trip to Texas . Grab your hat, leather boots and bullwhip (oo-er) and get down and dusty on a bonafide dude ranch.

Although a real working ranch, Dixie Dude Ranch in cowboy capital Bandera offers chilled-out horse rides and massage therapy – and if that still sounds like thirsty work, Hill Country’s wineries will oblige.

Alternative option: Shop for leather slippers and bags in Marrakesh or sniff out Instagrammable tanneries in Fez, Morocco .

The best US dude ranches to live like a cowboy

Close up of blood oranges at a market in Sicily.

4 years – fruit: Sicily

Four years and things haven’t gone sour – time to reward yourselves! Put your zest foot forward on a trip to Sicily , where lemons and blood oranges grow like weeds thanks to the island’s volcanic soil and abundant sunshine. On long summer days, linger over limoncello, citrusy salads and lip-puckering granita.

Hide away in an agriturismo (farm stay) to walk among citrus and olive groves, enjoy home-cooked meals and practice charming your hosts – and each other, of course – in la dolce lingua .

Alternative option: Wine counts as one of your five-a-day... right? Keep telling yourself that as you sip a tipple while touring the vineyards of South Australia .

Sicily's most beautiful national parks and reserves

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A Maori wood carving in Rotorua, New Zealand.

5 years – wood: New Zealand

By this point in your lives, you’ve most likely laid roots. You may even be adding to your family tree. Admire whakairo – the Maori artform of carving wood, jade and bone – in New Zealand , where getting back to nature couldn’t be easier, even if there are toddlers in tow.

Geothermal Rotorua makes an ideal – if a little whiffy – base; after a day wandering around Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest or visiting Whakarewarewa Village (complete with carved wooden buildings), chill out with a soak in the area’s natural hot springs.

Alternative option: Pursue your own fairy-tale romance in Germany’s Black Forest .

6 jaw-dropping places to stay in New Zealand

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A traveller poses at Machu Picchu with an alpaca.

7 years – wool: Peru

Feeling the seven-year itch? Not if you switch your sheep’s wool for the llama or alpaca variety. Stock up on some silky-smooth textiles in Peru – colourful socks, bobble hats and ponchos are the standard – and snuggle up with your other half as you admire the Andean landscape.

Opt for an Inca Trail tour that stops at a weaving co-op, where you can learn about traditional weaving and dyeing techniques and pick up some souvenirs to keep you warm on the trail.

Alternative option: Track the world’s finest cashmere to its source in Mongolia .

Experience the best of Peru with these 8 iconic hikes

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A couple walk in the ocean shallows under a blue sky, Bahamas.

10 years – tin: the Caribbean

You may have subsisted on canned soups and tinfoil-wrapped sandwiches while saving for your wedding day, but now that you’re a whole decade in, you deserve a little indulgence.

Make like Tintin (see what we did there?) and take to the seas on a Caribbean cruise or sailing trip, exploring the likes of St Lucia , Jamaica and Cuba .

Alternative option: Tintin also travelled to Tibet – although hopefully you won’t encounter any yetis on your Himalayan trek .

The best Caribbean islands: a quick, easy guide to finding your paradise

wedding anniversary trip ideas - Dusk at a vineyard in Champagne, France.

15 years – crystal: Reims, France

A pair of matching crystal flutes makes for a nice anniversary gift – but why not swing by the home of Champagne itself? The French region is crammed with opportunities to get sozzled on the sparkly stuff.

Reims is the ideal base for a boozy tour of all the big-name producers: Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon to name but a few. But if we’re sticking with the theme, perhaps the budget can stretch to a bottle of Cristal?

Alternative option: Swarovski fans will be all starry-eyed at Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria .

France’s 10 most stunning road trips

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a woman paints a porcelain vase in Jingdezhen, China.

20 years – china: China

Twenty years of matrimony is a quite a feat – and if it’s taken a few plate-smashing, vase-crunching screaming matches to get you here, who’s to judge? All is forgotten once you’re making up over steaming mugs of tea...

Journey to the home of porcelain (and your favourite loose leaf), China , for a cracking anniversary trip. Sip the hot stuff in Chengdu , before nipping to Jingdezhen for ceramic workshops and pottery purchases.

Alternative option: Clink china teacups during afternoon tea at the Ritz , London , the only UK hotel to have a certified tea sommelier.

The definitive guide to China’s national parks

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a man take a photograph of two silverback gorillas.

25 years – silver: Uganda

Chances are by this point, both you and your beau are sporting at least a few grey hairs – but it’s best not to tease Uganda’s silverbacks the way you do your partner… That’s right – why settle for a silver charm or tie clip when you can witness our wild and distant relatives in the cloud-shrouded forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ?

The thrill of glimpsing the alpha male or a mother and her babies is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s even better when shared with a loved one. If reaching middle age together means adventures like this, who needs youth?

Alternative option: Pack your glad rags and hit the strip in Nevada’s so-called Silver City, Las Vegas .

Uganda’s incredible mountain gorillas are having a baby boom

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a person kayaking in the clear waters of French Polynesia.

30 years – pearl: Fiji and French Polynesia

30 years in and the world’s still your oyster – so splash out on a South Pacific getaway, where turquoise waters and swaying palms make the perfect setting to reflect on your many happy years together.

Learn about pearls on a Fiji farm tour; hunt for a bargain at French Polynesia’s pearl markets – or simply soak up the iridescent sunsets from a hammock at Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort . Wedded bliss doesn’t get better than this.

Alternative option: Channel pearl-strewn Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s with some window shopping on NYC ’s Fifth Avenue.

The A-to-Z of Fiji: 26 reasons to visit the island paradise

The adventure continues…

Still going strong after all these years? Make even more precious memories with these trip ideas:

40 years, ruby: Jordan or Arizona Jordan for Mars-like deserts or the Grand Canyon for copper-red vistas.

50 years, gold: Australia or Canada Australia’s Gold Coast or the Yukon for Canadian Gold Rush history .

60 years, diamond: Hawaii or South Africa Honolulu for views of Diamond Head, or Cape Town’s Diamond Museum .

9 Anniversary Trip Ideas to Celebrate Any Milestone

Check out the top spots for anniversary vacations, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Matteo Colombo/Getty Images

Whether it's your  first anniversary  or your 50th, you may be thinking about hitting the road (or the skies!) for an epic anniversary trip to celebrate your nuptials. Not only do you deserve this romantic getaway, but it may be a first for you, at least in the last few years since the onset of the pandemic.

It’s true that, with mass vaccinations underway, and infection rates finally turning towards a decline, per the  Center for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC), there’s no time like the present to research anniversary trip ideas and plan a special vacation. In fact, travel experts are already seeing major spikes in travel and tourism, and the numbers are projected to continue climbing through 2022. The number of visitors through the summer, which is usually the low season in Los Cabos, Mexico where Bonnie Chase, wedding planner and owner of  Bliss Events , is based, were staggering. “Many people stayed home for a year or longer because of the pandemic, and now that travel advisories are lifted, people are feeling safer traveling, everyone is ready to jet off into the sunset,” she says. “Also, many people made more and spent less money during the first year of the pandemic that they had prior to that, and are now in a more financially comfortable financial position to travel, so we’re also seeing a trend of elevated event budgets.”

The good news: If you’re looking to travel in 2022 , your chances of an unforgettable trip are pretty high. So many destinations are back up and running and are eager to satisfy travelers coming through—especially those looking to celebrate something special, like an anniversary. If you’re in the midst of planning a romantic vacation with your significant other, here are some of the top anniversary trip ideas and destinations to hit in 2022.

Napa, California

If you and your spouse appreciate a good glass of cabernet, chances are, California wine country has been on your list of places to visit for some time. Not only does it offer up some of nation's, and maybe even the world’s, best wineries (next to Sonoma), but it also provides picturesque views of the rolling countryside, not to mention access to some outstanding restaurants where you can sip on this local wine. If nothing else, it’s the perfect place to cheers to another year or marriage, especially if you stay at one of the romantic resorts like T he Meritage Resort & Spa . Just five miles outside of downtown Napa (biking there is even a possibility!), this luxury resort has everything you need to unwind, relax and toast to your marriage, including their award-winning, underground spa (couples' massage anyone?), on-site wine tasting and classes, candlelight yoga offerings and Tuscan-inspired restaurant. Napa is also just an hour drive from San Francisco, so you can hit both destinations with one romantic weekend road trip.

The Bahamas

This tropical island just off the coast of Florida is a vacation hotspot for obvious reasons: crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, eclectic cuisine, vibrant nightlife, aquatic sites and swanky resorts. It’s also not too far travel-wise from most areas of the U.S., but offers a true vacation feel, especially if you’re looking for a beach destination. For an unforgettable anniversary getaway, stay at  The Cove at Atlantis Paradise Island , which is nestled right between two private white sand beachfronts. Each luxury suite features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean, balconies to step out and soak up the view and impeccable butler service and the facilities include an adults-only Cove Pool with 20 private beach cabanas, the Mandara Spa, the Caribbean's only outdoor gaming, exceptional cuisine at Fish by the world-renowned and Michelin star Chef José Andrés (foodies will love this restaurant!), shopping and more.

New York City

As the saying goes, “New York City is always a good idea,” and this is definitely true when it comes to celebrating your anniversary. One thing is for sure: There is no shortage of things to do and fun to be had in the Big Apple. On the list of romantic activities, you can catch a Broadway show, visit one of the city’s Michelin-star restaurants, check out one of the cool art galleries, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, take a day trip to the Long Island wineries, shop around SoHo and even kiss atop the Empire State Building. And when it comes to places to stay, the options are really endless. A central location and a romantic ambiance is a must for an anniversary trip. Consider the  Loews Regency New York Hotel , situated right on New York’s Park Avenue and within walking distance to Central Park. With a fun and vibrant Art Deco feel, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city in most rooms and book yourselves a treatment at Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa located right below.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

With low cases of COVID, Cabo San Lucas is a hot destination for all sorts of travel in 2022. It’s located on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and is beloved for its crystal clear waters and white, sandy beaches. One of the reasons Chase recommends it to clients looking for a romantic getaway in the midst of the pandemic is because it is located close to many places in the world, especially the U.S., and hotels are able to operate at full capacity again. On the list of romantic, splurge-worthy resorts,  Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal  sits at the top. It’s situated on a 24-acre site at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and offers more than just gorgeous beaches and an outdoor infinity pool. They have specific offerings for couples to enhance the romance, including their Lovers Soak Tub Experience, which involves sipping champagne in the property’s signature soaking tub while enjoying sweets from the resort’s on-site pastry chef, a private cliffside dinner at El Farallon by the Sea while overlooking crashing waves down below and their Sun-Kissed Love package, which includes roundtrip air transfers, daily breakfast, dinner for two at their Don Manuel restaurant, a rose petal turndown and 20 percent off spa treatments.

Another favorite anniversary trip idea as of late and arguably one of the most romantic places on the planet, is the Maldives. This stunning chain of islands in the Indian Ocean has long been a top destination for honeymooners and anniversary celebrations alike. Although the flight is long from the USA, the destination offers gorgeous and relaxing private accommodations, boating, snorkeling, diving, fishing, city tours and restaurants. One top anniversary destination in the Maldives is located on the Muravandhoo island in the Raa Atoll. Located in one of the deepest coral atolls in the world is luxury island resort  JOALI . Not only is it fringed by pristine white-sand beaches and brilliant blue waters, but it’s set up for romance. Enjoy a private dinner on a secluded island or in their private oceanfront treehouse, Manta Tree House. Interested in a vow renewal ? This resort specializes in that and even has an on-site wedding specialist who can help set up your entire evening.

Boston, massachusetts.

If you’re open to staying in the United States, this charming city is set up for romance in a humbling, yet bustling way. Although this New England city is one of the oldest  in the nation, which its founding dating back to 1630 (yes, seriously), it’s constantly changing, especially the Seaport District, which has seen immense growth over the last decade. Once a muddy part of Boston Harbor, the northeast region of the city now offers award-winning waterfront restaurants, jaw dropping high rises and high-end hotels with epic views. If you’re on the hunt for a romantic hotel to stay at for your weekend getaway, consider the newly opened  Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport,  the largest hotel to open in Boston in more than 10 years. With more than 1,000 rooms and suites and 22 floors all with breathtaking views of the city, it’s home to three restaurants, a full-service spa, a rooftop pool open 365 days a year and grab-and-go coffee shop offering a carte du jour of breakfast and lunch items. If you’re a first-time visitor to Boston, be sure to check out a tour of historic Fenway Park where the Red Sox play, visit the Museum of Fine Arts, enjoy a classic Italian meal in the North End and take a stroll in the Boston Public Garden.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Another great anniversary destination in the U.S. that is idyllic year round is Virginia Beach, Virginia. From unbeatable ocean views, wildlife reserves and national parks and state parks to top-ranked cuisine, scenic golf courses, shopping and entertainment, the city offers a huge range of indoor and outdoor activities and opportunities for couples celebrating their anniversary. There are plenty of beautiful places to stay, but to make the most of your romantic getaway, consider  The Cavalier Resort , which sits against the Atlantic Coast at the Virginia Beach oceanfront and home to Virginia Beach’s top four restaurants on TripAdvisor: Tulu, Becca Restaurant, Orion’s Roof, and Hunt Room. Also located at the Cavalier Hotel is their SeaHill Spa—the perfect destination for indulging in a glass of champagne and toasting to your marriage. Don't forget to head to the nearby Norfolk Botanical Garden—a scenic gem near Virginia Beach.

If this island off the coast of Thailand has been on your fairytale bucket list, there's no time like the present to take a visit. This summer, the tropical paradise welcomed fully vaccinated international guests back after months of record-low infection rates. While rates jumped back up this fall, as it did nearly everywhere else in the world, it’s finally on a steady decline and will hopefully stay that way. In other words, now is the time to travel to Thailand if it’s been on your wishlist and to enjoy everything this beautiful destination has to offer: pristine beaches, meaningful cultural immersions, southern Thai culinary experiences and exceptional island lifestyle to name a few. Stay at the luxury hotel,  The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui  which sits on a prowling 58 acres of land on the north-eastern part of the island that stretches from beach to hilltop. With two breathtaking beaches, 11 restaurants with gorgeous vista views, the only ocean swimming pool in Thailand, outdoor adventures including hiking trails, kayaking, canoe rentals, a huge Spa Village Koh Samui with age-old spa therapies (and a hot tub), the largest one-of-a-kind swim reef and two floodlit tennis courts, there’s much to be enjoyed in this epic destination.

Virgin Voyages

If you’re not usually keen on cruises, this brand-new cruise line is about to change everything you know about a traditional cruise experience. “In typical Richard Branson fashion, everything on this adult-only ship, from the staterooms to the entertainment to the fine dining, is completely redesigned and unique,” says Kayla LeClerc, owner of  Whimsical Wishes Travel Concierge . It just set out on its maiden voyage in October and is already making waves for its super-yacht feel, 20 restaurants and specialty eateries, energetic entertainment and, most importantly amidst a pandemic, its safety standards. All sailors and crew are fully vaccinated and the cruise provides free COVID-19 testing at the terminal. Cruise the Caribbean or Europe—your choice!

Anniversary Trip Ideas For Every Couple And Any Budget

Jason and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this year and we decided to book a trip to Costa Rica to celebrate. We’ll spend eight days in this tropical country, most of it in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Over the years, we’ve planned many epic adventures for celebrating anniversaries and mostly, they’ve been very successful. But choosing the right destination isn’t always easy, so I thought I’d help with anniversary trip ideas. I’ll share nine romantic and fun destinations along with a few planning tips.

Anniversary Trip Ideas--Wendy and Jason in Florence, Italy

Choosing The Destination for Your Anniversary Trip

Before selecting any destination for your anniversary trip I recommend asking yourselves these two questions;

  • How long can we be away from home?
  • How much do we want to spend?

A short weekend getaway can definitely be romantic, especially if you’re on a tight budget. When our kids were young, this was often the best option for us, both for the sake of budget and childcare. But if this is a significant anniversary year, you may want to allow more time and give yourselves permission to spend more money. Whatever the decision, it’s important for both of you to be on the same page.

Next, think about how you want to spend time on your trip. Do you want to relax and chill, or are you looking for some adventure? If work has been stressful and you both need a break, finding a charming bed and breakfast in a charming little town might be just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you want to spend time together trying something new. There’s no right answer, but again, it’s important to review your options in advance.

Money Saving Tips For Your Anniversary Trip

Your romantic getaway doesn’t have to break the bank. So here are a few ways to save some money without sacrificing the experience. We’ve used all of these tips and tricks over the years and saved a considerable amount of money.

  • Travel mid-week instead of on the weekend.
  • Compare booking a package with reserving each portion of the trip separately.
  • Use credit card points instead of cash.
  • Look for deals through websites like TravelZoo.
  • If booking airfares, compare all your options through Google Flights or SkyScanner.
  • Plan free or low cost activities like hiking, biking, and kayaking. Many cities offer free-walking tours as well.
  • Be flexible with your destination. Your first choice city may be crazy expensive, but a alternate may be within your budget.
  • Compare a hotel with the cost of an AirBnB or VRBO.

Anniversary Trip Ideas In the United States

If you want to travel within the United States, the options for a romantic escape are endless. And whether you want a beachside, mountain top, or big city destination, we've got you covered.

Catalina Island, California

If you’ve decided on an oceanside, weekend getaway then Catalina Island is perfect , because whether you want to relax or stay active, this place delivers. Jason and I had the chance to stay at the recently remodeled Atwater Hotel last year and loved it. Everything you’ll want to do is within easy walking distance; tours, the beach, restaurants, and shopping.

If you’ve decided upon a relaxing weekend, then head to the Descanso Beach Club, reserve two chaise lounges, order a tropical drink, and simply chill for the day. When you get hungry, the onsite restaurant serves delicious food.

For the more adventurous, book one of the many activities or tours offered on the island including ziplining, kayaking, rock climbing, and more. Jason and I took the Bison Expedition and explored the rugged backcountry of Catalina for over two hours. We bounced along dirt roads searching for wildlife. Occasionally we stopped to appreciate the scenic views. And since ours was the last expedition of the day we were treated to a sunset over Avalon Harbor.

When you’re ready for a really romantic dinner, do what we did and head to Avalon Grille . The food was delicious and the service spot on. A good option for lunch is Bluewater Grill . Request a table on the deck and enjoy hearing the waves crash below you.

Catalina Casino

La Jolla, California

Earlier this year Jason and I were looking for a completely relaxing getaway for a few days and decided that La Jolla fit the bill. This seaside section of San Diego has an upscale charm that includes plenty of fine dining, high end shopping, and great resorts. And while it could be an adventurous destination, for us, this is the place we go to chill.

After years of visiting La Jolla and staying at many of the area hotels, we’ve settled on the Hilton Torrey Pines as our favorite. Most of the rooms have balconies with a view of the world-famous Torrey Pines Golf Course. If we’re in the mood for a hike, Torrey Pines State Park is within walking distance. But one of the reasons we’ve come to love this hotel is it’s location next to Torrey Pines Lodge, a luxury resort with an elegant restaurant and gorgeous spa. Essentially, we stay at the Hilton for about half the price of the Lodge, but avail ourselves of services at both. In fact we’ve found the side door of the Hilton that connects to the side door of The Lodge (maybe I shouldn't be sharing this!).

If you plan to leave the hotel then head to Prospect Street--the main thoroughfare of La Jolla--for a nice selection of restaurants and shopping. Personally we enjoy Duke’s . Their seafood dishes are quite good and the view of La Jolla Cove is spectacular. Try to make reservations just before sunset.

Vegas Strip

Las Vegas, Nevada

Sin City is the opposite of quiet and relaxing, but Jason and I have celebrated many anniversaries in Las Vegas and always love it . So if you’re looking for plenty of action for your getaway, plan a trip to Vegas.

We’ve stayed at a dozen different hotels on The Strip over the years, but our favorite is definitely The Cosmopolitan. Not only do we love the large, stylish rooms, but the selection of restaurants is unparalleled (afterall, travel is really about eating!). I recommend splurging on a room with a terrace and a view of the Bellagio Fountains. After dozens of trips to Vegas, I’m still not tired of the fountains. When you get hungry head to Secret Pizza, Eggslut, China Poblano, or Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. And if you want to sip a drink in a gorgeous and unusual setting head to the Chandelier Bar where you’ll be surrounded by draped crystal beads.

Jason and I aren’t gamblers, so we’re not in Vegas for the slot machines or card tables. Instead, we go for the shows and restaurants. Among our favorite restaurants for dinner are Mon Ami Gabi at Paris, Giada’s at The Cromwell, and Jaleo at The Cosmopolitan. In the show category we have many to recommend including anything produced by Cirque Du Soleil, Absinthe at Caesar’s Palace, and the Blue Man Group at The Luxor.

If you’re visiting Las Vegas outside of the summer season, and you enjoy hiking, set aside a half day for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.  Encompassing more than 195,000 acres and featuring 19 marked hiking trails you could spend years exploring this geologically unique reserve. But just choose one trail and explore the colorful rock formations that dominate the park.

Wendy and Jason dining in New York City

New York, New York

Romance and New York City may not sound compatible at first, but stay with me. This is one of the dining and theater capitals of the world. Any kind of food you want can be found in NYC along with a wide variety of plays and musicals. In my mind, those are the makings of a great anniversary trip. And when you add in all the museums, attractions, and shopping, this city is an excellent destination.

However, New York City is not a budget destination. Hotel rooms alone can be bloody expensive. So this might be a splurge, but definitely worth it. For our last trip to New York we opted to stay in the Financial District near the 9/11 Museum and the World Trade Center. We selected this location because it put us within walking distance to some of the places we wanted to go including the museum and the Statue Of Liberty. We had a great time exploring this part of the city, but for my next trip I’ll probably choose a different neighborhood so we can learn even more about this complex American city.

When visiting New York it’s critical to make advanced reservations for everything , and for the most popular attractions, pay a little extra for front-of-the-line passes. And if like us, you get tired of public transportation, use Uber or Lyft instead. Sometimes it’s nice to be picked up exactly where you are and be dropped off exactly where you’re headed.

Park City, Utah

Park City, Utah

Jason and I don’t ski, but we have discovered that ski destinations make great summer vacations . We’ve been twice to this upscale resort town in Utah, and will be returning for the third time soon. The selection of stylish resorts, farm-to-table restaurants, and a charming town center filled with art galleries makes Park City perfect for an anniversary celebration. If you enjoy hiking there are hundreds of miles of trails of all levels.

For our last trip--and upcoming trip--we selected the Chateaux at Deer Valley . In winter, this is a seriously pricey option, but good deals can be found in the summer. The rooms are cozy and comfortable while the resort offers a pool, outdoor games and fire pits, and a lovely restaurant. The ski lifts and a few hiking trails are just a short walk from the resort’s entrance. For views of the entire region take the Sterling Lift to the top of Bald Mountain. When it’s time to eat, head to one of Bill White’s eight establishments including Grapo, Wahso, and Chimayo. Or make a reservation at Glitretind, a Scandanavian inspired venue located inside the Stein Eriksen Lodge.

TRS Turquesa Hotel

Anniversary Trip Ideas–International Destinations

If you have more time--and typically more budget-- an international destination can be a great anniversary celebration . In the current travel climate, be sure the destination you want to visit is open. And if it is, check out all their tourist requirements. Finally, be sure your passport is current and will not expire for at least six months from the time of your travel.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Right before the world shut down in March of 2020 I had the chance to visit Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Specifically I had the chance to stay at two different adults only resorts in this city. Whether you need an escape from your own kids, or like us, your kids are grown and you no longer require pools with slides and kids meals, an adults only resort is a great option for anniversary travel.

I spent two nights at the TRS Turquesa hotel , the adults only portion of Grand Palladium Punta Cana Resort . This large, sprawling resort is located on the water and offers a long stretch of white sand beach to stroll any time of the day. This alone would be perfect for a romantic trip with your loved one. But it gets even better. As an all-inclusive resort you can eat at any of the dozens of restaurants on the property with a variety of international cuisines. To work off all that food head to the gym or take one of the organized yoga classes. At night enjoy live music at several of the bars and clubs. But perhaps my favorite part of the whole resort were the large, beautifully appointed suites that included an unlimited mini-bar.

For one night I stayed at the TRS Cap Cana Hotel, a smaller adults only resort. Here there are never any kids--just adults having a really good time. This more intimate resort offered a few restaurants, a large pool area, daily classes, and nightly entertainment. I’d recommend either resort for a romantic anniversary getaway.

La Place Royale In Quebec City, Canada

Quebec, Canada

I’ve been to Quebec twice, once to it’s capital city of Montreal, and once to Quebec City . Both are worthy destinations, and if you have enough time, could be combined into one trip. Both are great destinations for foodies, so if that’s a major focus of your anniversary trip, then this province of Canada is for you.

As the second most populous city in Canada, Montreal has endless neighborhoods to explore, sights to enjoy, and restaurants to dine . We spent a week here and just scratched the surface. We opted to stay at the Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal where the city was founded in 1642 as Forte Ville-Marie. This is home to cobblestone streets, ancient buildings, and Notre-Dame Basilica. If you enjoy museums like we do, head to the Museum of Fine Arts. Then be sure to save time to eat your way through this French inspired city. One way to do this is at one of the markets; Marché Atwater or Jean Talon Market.

Quebec City is steeped in European charm, food, and culture. Everywhere you turn there are historic and well preserved buildings, some dating back to the mid-1600’s. Everyone speaks fluent French and will greet you with “bonjour.” This is a part of the country that considers itself Quebecois first and Canadienne second.

I visited this city alone, and was really wishing Jason had been able to join me so we could both appreciate it’s romance together. But even without Jason, I fell in love with the food scene in Quebec City . No matter what else you do, book a food tour to really understand and appreciate how shops and restaurants in this town are proud to offer items that combine their Native, French, English and Canadian heritage.

I stayed in the Old Port neighborhood at Hotel Le Germain Quebec .  This hotel was stylish, the rooms large and comfortable, and the included breakfast quite good. I would happily stay here again.

The Lee Family in Costa Rica

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include Costa Rica, especially since it’s the destination we’ve selected to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We took the whole family to Costa Rica a few years ago and fell in love with this Caribbean country. It’s relatively small with a laid back vibe while also being packed with natural wonders.

For our first trip here we stayed in Playa Esterillos, located South of the city of Jaco . Our resort was small but perfectly positioned right on the beach. Each day we walked out of our room, across a small lawn and onto the sand to admire the expansive view of the Pacific Ocean. While the kids kept themselves entertained (they were both in highschool) Jason and I walked for miles along the sand hand in hand. Twice we ventured out of the resort; once for a ziplining tour and once to explore the nearby national Park, Manuel Antonio. We found that accommodations, activities, and food in Costa Rica were far less expensive than a similar tropical destination like Hawaii.

The perfect anniversary trip ideas

Bonus–Rome, Italy

Last year Jason and I finally had the chance to visit Rome, and now it goes straight to the top of most romantic places in the world. If you're up for a splurge, it tops my list of anniversary trip ideas.

As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day, and you aren't going to see it all on one trip. We had 3 days in Rome , and definitely saw most of the popular attractions, and I'll share a few highlights here.

I'm obsessed with Italian food, so the very first thing you must do is book a food tour in Rome . Our three hour tour began in Piazza Navona and then wove through the streets of Rome as we sampled pizza, pasta, and gelato. Along the way we learned about Roman history.

Next up, be sure to book the underground tour of the Colosseum . This special tour takes you to the gladiator tunnels where both people and animals awaited their turn on stage. It was a highlight of our trip.

Other must-see sights include the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain. I know, they can all be very touristy and crowded, but you still need to see them.

We stayed in the Centro Historico (historic center of Rome) at Hotel Stendhal and definitely recommend it. The rooms aren't large, but they are clean and comfortable and there's an included breakfast each day.

If you’re looking for anniversary trip ideas, I hope this article has helped. Or maybe it’s sparked an idea for a completely different destination. No matter where you decide to go, be sure to focus on the importance of your relationship and use the time to reconnect with the one you love.

We have an anniversary coming up and we planned a bit of a splurge few days away. So many of these U.S. destinations would not have worked this year. But keeping these as good future ideas. We are indeed visiting both Montreal and Quebec City on this trip so great to see them on your list. And yes, we plan to eat our way through both cities. Happy Anniversary!

All excellent ideas and something for every taste and budget. Fun!

I have my wedding anniversary in 3 months, and I think I could probably choose one of these destinations. They all look worth visiting. It is difficult to choose one. If all goes fine, I would choose Costa Rica.

I hope you have a wonderful anniversary trip! Costa Rica is always worth visiting.

12 Anniversary Trip Ideas For Every Milestone And Couple

The South is chock-full of charming destinations for a romantic getaway.

anniversary trip ideas in march

Gabriela Herman

Celebrating an anniversary offers the perfect excuse to plan a trip to somewhere new, or even back to a beloved place that you’ve been dreaming to revisit. A romantic getaway is an ideal way to spend quality time with a loved one, and these anniversary trip ideas and itineraries are sure to make more memories as you look back on fond ones.

Since anniversaries fall on every time of the year, we have different options for every type of couple. Planning for autumn? Consider celebrating with a Blue Ridge Mountains road trip with epic fall color or a bourbon tour in Kentucky. Dreaming of a tropical breeze ? The Florida Keys are calling. Want something unique? We’ve got small towns and cities worth wandering. Luckily, the South abounds with charming destinations to experience with your partner.

For every couple or milestone, there’s a Southern anniversary trip idea for your next vacation. See our list of favorite romantic destinations.

The Florida Keys

Head out on a road trip on the Overseas Highway, a 113-mile road spanning from Key Largo to Key West—the most famous among Florida’s southernmost archipelago. Beyond the conch-style houses, toes-in-the-sand seafood joints, and general good-living attitude, there’s no bound on what you can explore, starting with How To Spend The Perfect Day in Key West and The Secret Beaches of the Florida Keys Worth Visiting . Make sure to stop for a tour of Ernest Hemingway’s home and its famed six-toed cats.

Charleston, South Carolina

It’s easy to see the appeal of this charming coastal town for a romantic getaway—it’s been voted the South’s Best City several years running for just that reason. Cobblestone streets and colorful row homes make for easy wandering as you shop down King Street and eat at some of the best restaurants in the South. Get lunch at Leon's Fine Poultry & Oyster Shop (don’t miss the fried chicken), stop in at 100-plus-year-old store Croghan's Jewel Box , and book a room at Hotel Bennett on Marion Square.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Running through North Carolina and Virginia, this scenic road winds along the valleys and crests of the Appalachian Mountain range, connecting Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Shenandoah National Park. While there’s no bad time to see the sights, you’re in extra good luck if your trip lands during autumn months when fall color surrounds the drive, or during springtime when the flowers are in full bloom. Make sure to hit our recommendations for Iconic Spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway Everyone Should See and The Best Virginia Towns Along the Blue Ridge Parkway .

Dahlonega, Georgia

Ian Dagnall/Alamy

If you want to see the definition of small-town charm in person, a trip to Dahlonega will do the trick. After spending the morning wandering around the historic town square—which is centered around a courthouse that dates back to the state's early 19th-century gold rush—and grabbing breakfast at Picnic Café and Dessertery , head just outside town for an impressive collection of North Georgia wineries that are open for weekend tours and tastings, such as Wolf Mountain Vineyards , Montaluce Winery & Resort , and Crane Creek Vineyards .

Fort Worth, Texas

For those who enjoy learning about history and having a great time to boot, Fort Worth is like taking a step back into the Wild West. This cattle town recently reinvigorated the Stockyards National Historic District, and you can explore Exchange Avenue and its shops, restaurants, and saloons. Make sure to check out the Cowtown Coliseum, which held the first indoor rodeo arena in the country. Each Friday and Saturday, you can still attend events that showcase barrel racing, roping, and crowd-favorite bull riding. Plan your trip here.

Georgia’s Golden Isles

Yes, Georgia has a coast, and it’s draped in beautiful oaks and marshes. Two neighboring islands, Sea Island and St. Simons Island are both inviting places to visit anytime of the year, but it’s an especially welcoming destination during the holidays if you want to Celebrate A Lowcountry Christmas for your winter anniversary. For a more outdoorsy and warm-weather Georgia island, Jekyll Island offers biking on wide wooden pathways, kayaking on the marshlands, and relaxing on the beach.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The Smoky Mountains are calling, and luckily there are two popular towns to visit in between oohing and aahing at the mountain vistas and natural wonders. Head to Gatlinburg for the scenic SkyBridge , North America’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, which leads up to a viewing deck, the SkyLift Park, that offers unobstructed views. Book a room at Dollywood's DreamMore Resort and Spa in neighboring Pigeon Forge.

Charlottesville, Virginia

With over 500-plus miles of Blue Ridge trails, a restaurant-per-capita density that rivals major cities like New York City, easy access to breweries and wineries, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate nearby for touring, Charlottesville is packed full of things to do. The Monticello Wine Trail has 40 wineries in a 25-mile radius of Charlottesville. Head to Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards —which is known for its landscape, food, wines, and verdant grounds—for a relaxing day date.

Kentucky’s Bourbon Country

There’s not a bad time of the year to head out to the rolling hills of Kentucky’s bourbon and horse country. In the spring and fall, hit the horse races at Keeneland in Lexington , head to our South’s Best-voted favorite distillery , and stop into Bardstown, a historic small town in the countryside an hour outside Louisville. Make sure to stop in at the Old Talbott Tavern , one of the oldest stagecoach stops in the country, for Kentucky cuisine. The building was constructed in 1779.

Orange Beach, Alabama

Ask any Alabama native their favorite thing about the 32-mile stretch that makes up the beaches of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, and it’d be hard to count the many reasons why families flock to this destination year after year. A good place to start would be The Best Things To Do In Orange Beach (including locally-beloved fried shrimp), but don’t miss the area’s biggest natural wonder, Gulf State Park , which boasts over 6,000 acres of land that includes a tranquil beach away from the busy crowds.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks

Make a beach trip into an adventure by embarking on an anniversary RV trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks . The coastline is lined with wide, flat beaches that are perfect for long bike rides and often dog-friendly. Additionally, you can travel between towns like Nags Head, Duck, and Kitty Hawk. State Road 12 passes through lighthouses and beach villages for nearly 150 miles and culminates on the northernmost Currituck Banks, where you can spot wild horses.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

This seahorse-shaped barrier island runs for 7 miles along the Gulf Coast and, despite being a gorgeous enclave of sandy beaches with a strong local community, it has happily remained a hidden gem thanks to residents that have helped preserve its laid-back village vibe. Instead of high-rises, you’ll rent out charming beach cottages. Stroll Pine Avenue, the town’s original main street, where you’ll find a friendly mix of galleries, bakeries, boutiques, and restaurants. A quiet, breezy, relaxing anniversary? See our recommendations.

Anniversary gift: china.

a woman walking in Chinatown, Los Angeles

U.S. destination: Los Angeles

Travel to downtown L.A.’s Chinatown, home to pagoda-like temples and dim sum eateries where you can enjoy soup dumplings with your sweetie. Serenade each other under hanging red lanterns on karaoke night at the intimate Melody Lounge. Or enjoy a blissful foot reflexology session at one of Chinatown’s affordable day spas. Take a self-guided walking tour past the landmarks, herb shops and discount outlets that dot the alleyways and courtyards of this fascinating quarter. For a range of romantic accommodations, stay in Beverly Hills. Splurge on the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel (rates start around $1,100). Or consider the more affordable Mosaic Hotel near the shops of Rodeo Drive (rates start around $260) and the Beverly Hills Plaza Hotel (rates start at $260). To see and be seen, sip cocktails and dine at celeb haunts such as the terrace of The Ivy or the candlelit garden of The Little Door.

Trentham Gardens in England

Abroad: Stoke-on-Trent, England

The self-titled World Capital of Ceramics is about a 40-minute drive south of Manchester Airport (MAN). Wedgwood, Halcyon Days and other renowned lines of china and other ceramics have been produced here since the 17th century. Tour the Wedgwood Factory and update your wedding china by hunting for deals at multiple factory stores. Steal a kiss on a bench amid the 725 cultivated acres at award-winning Trentham Gardens. You can also renew your vows there in a columned Italian-style loggia or by the lake. The Stoke area boasts a range of accommodations including The Tawny, a “deconstructed” hotel with tree houses, huts and other accommodations in the middle of the English countryside (rates start at $330). Also consider the Victorian-style Upper House (rates start at $130) and Manor House Hotel & Spa (starting at $154).

Anniversary: pearl .

aerial view of the Honolulu coastline

U.S. destination: Honolulu

Everywhere from historic sites to Honolulu shops, the pearl is a presence on the island of O‘ahu. Shop for the perfectly imperfect gemstone at fine jewelry stores including Honolulu Jewelry Company, Maui Divers Jewelry and Nā Hōkū. In the suburb of Pearl City, active couples can pack a picnic and hike the nearly 3-mile trail to Waimano Falls. Nearby, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a must-see site honoring those who lost their lives during the attack. For dinner with a view, toast to three decades with mai tais and hula dancing at The House Without a Key restaurant at the oceanfront Halekulani hotel. Reserve table 97 with postcard views of Diamond Head . It was favored by Ernest Hemingway, who honeymooned here with Martha Gellhorn. Stay at the historic Pink Palace of the Pacific, The Royal Hawaiian resort (rates start at $486), or at the waterfront Kaimana Beach Hotel (rates start at $207). Take a surf class, snorkel or simply soak up the rays.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

overwater bungalows in French Polynesia

Abroad: French Polynesia

If your love is into rare pearls, score coveted Tahitian cultured beauties after your plane touches down in Papeete on the main island of Tahiti. Serious shoppers can get a bead on how pearls are classed and cultivated — and see some impressively large ones — at the Robert WAN Pearl Museum. French Polynesia is a tropical playground . From Papeete, take a ferry to the island of Moorea to stay in one of many overwater bungalows with thatched roofs. Book one with tiles of clear glass on the floor to view sea life at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort (rates start around $1,000 for an overwater bungalow). Also consider the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa (rates start at $555) and Manava Beach Resort & Spa (rates start at $490). Couples on Moorea can experience an intimate motu, or small islet on a coral reef. Picnic where you’re seated at a low table with your toes in shallow crystalline waters while enjoying fresh fish with coconut milk and tropical fruit.

40th wedding anniversary trip ideas

Anniversary gift: ruby.

The red rocks in Sedona, Arizona

U.S. destination: Sedona, Arizona

The resplendent red rock formations are said to promote rejuvenation and healing via invisible vortexes that emanate healthy energy. Sedona also appeals to hikers and ATV aficionados as well as people who love scenic drives . Visit Red Rock State Park for easy hiking trails and book a couples massage at one of the spas around town. Fall asleep in a luxe room, suite or cottage/villa at L’Auberge de Sedona (rates start at $500) or Enchantment Resort (rates start at $450). RV parks and bed-and-breakfast accommodations abound. Alma de Sedona Inn offers rooms with private balconies and views of the ruby-red landscape (rates start at $250.) The menu varies, but breakfast lovers may enjoy homemade muffins and lemon ricotta pancakes during a stay here.

Buddha statue in Bangkok, Thailand

Abroad: Bangkok, Thailand

People who are passionate about fine gems can bond over beautiful jewels in Bangkok. Thailand was once known for mining rubies, but ruby cutting by skilled artisans is the draw here today. Order custom pieces from reputable outlets including the many shops in the Jewelry Trade Center and S.J. International. Craving Thai cuisine? Try a food tour or night market tasting outing in a tuk-tuk motorized rickshaw. Around every corner in markets and alleyways, you’ll find fiery curries, tangy pad thai, sticky mango rice and scrumptious chicken satays. Dine on contemporary Thai cuisine at Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin. Away from the bustle, see the 151-foot-long reclining Buddha statue at Wat Pho, where you can book a traditional Thai couples massage. Find romantic five-star lodging under $250 at the Shangri-La and Banyan Tree Bangkok.

50th wedding anniversary trip ideas

Anniversary gift: gold.

anniversary trip ideas in march

U.S. destination: The Rocky Mountaineer train

Celebrate a half century of togetherness lounging side-by-side in cushy seats on the luxury Rocky Mountaineer train (rates start at $1,699 a person for two days, including lodging for one night), called the gold standard for train travel. Riding the rails from Moab, Utah, to Denver , you’ll go where cars can’t travel, streaming past canyons, whimsical rock formations called hoodoos and whitewater rafters on the Colorado River. Onboard hosts offer entertaining commentary about Western history (you’ll pass one of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s hideouts) and serve chef-prepared breakfast and lunch accompanied by wine, beer or cocktails. Upgrade to SilverLeaf Plus service for access to a glass-roofed viewing car. The trip includes an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where you can soak in soothing hot springs and have the option to stay in the historic Hotel Colorado, where Theodore Roosevelt once laid his head. Another option: Uncommon Tours’ Great Western Holiday is an eight-day outing from Denver to Santa Fe featuring vintage Pullman sleeping cars, some overnights at hotels and a stay in Santa Fe (rates start at $3,995 per person for seven nights).

aerial view of The Queen Mary 2

Abroad: Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2

You deserve pampering on your 50th, so a cruise vacation that involves unpacking once and never having to arrange meals or activities is a well-deserved reward. Expand your horizons with the gold-standard transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton, England, aboard the Cunard line’s storied Queen Mary 2 . That means afternoon tea, white-glove service, formal evenings and dancing cheek to cheek (rates start at $639 per person for eight nights). Music lovers can opt for an Oct. 4 cruise to England, with stops in Boston and Newport, that includes onboard performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, starting at $1,639 a person. The ship offers accessible staterooms and restaurants. For the ultimate experience, select Princess Grill or Queens Grill Suites (rates start around $3,809 per person for the Princess Grill), with private balconies and special dining rooms. Take a windblown selfie near the bow, and you’ll feel like king and queen of the world. Also consider an Atlantic passage or other itineraries on the all-inclusive Seabourn and Silversea cruise lines.

The Best Anniversary Date Ideas

Romantic anniversary date ideas, fun anniversary date ideas, cheap anniversary date ideas, creative anniversary date ideas.

Want the TL;DR version? Then let's cut straight to the chase with the top five best anniversary date ideas. How did we possibly manage to narrow it down? The best anniversary dates should be affordable, widely enjoyable and a step away from the everyday. The ideas below all fit the bill.

1. Recreate Your Honeymoon at Home

You don't have to book a plane ticket to relive your honeymoon or another memorable trip you shared together. You can recreate that special destination at home: If you jetted off to Santorini for instance, whip up some tzatziki, pour some ouzo and cue up Mamma Mia!

2. Create DIY Homemade Gifts

There's no need to spend a ton on anniversary gifts . Spend a night crafting homemade gifts for one another. Think: painting wooden craft-store frames to house your favorite cute, couple-y pics.

3. Make a Couples Bucket List and Cross Something Off Every Year

From the big stuff (owning a home) to skinny dipping and learning how to salsa, jot down everything you wish to do together over the years to come—and then spend subsequent anniversaries crossing everything off your list.

4. Volunteer

Celebrate love by spreading it! Make it a tradition to volunteer each year on your anniversary. You can walk dogs at an animal shelter, put in a shift at a local soup kitchen—however you want to make a difference.

5. Book a Staycation at a Local Hotel

Cuddle up in a king-sized bed and a fluffy hotel comforter, hit the pool and indulge in room service for breakfast the next morning. (Be sure to scour travel sites like Trip Advisor for last-minute deals.)

After all this time, they still make your heart go all aflutter! Spend time thoughtfully planning a romantic anniversary date to make them similarly go weak in the knees.

6. See a Drive-In Movie

If you have the outdoor space, you can even create your own personal theater with a projector set-up!

7. Write Each Other Love Letters

Take inspiration from poets of the past and pen each other love letters over wine and candlelight. (This is a particularly sweet tradition you can do year after year.)

8. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Your love has you floating on cloud nine—so now take to the literal clouds with this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

9. Go Stargazing or Visit a Planetarium

If your location allows for it, lay out some sleeping bags, get cozy and see what constellations you can spot. Alternatively, you can visit a local planetarium and take in the out-of-this-world exhibits.

10. Take a Dancing Class

Be it ballroom dancing, swing or salsa, you'll be able to hold your honey close, learn a new skill and have a ton of fun. (The ultimate trifecta!)

11. Book a Couples Massage

Indulge side-by-side with a set of relaxing rubdowns, before spending some one-on-one time in the spa's sauna or hot tub.

12. Watch the Sunset (or Sunrise!)

Find a rooftop bar or romantic viewpoint to say goodnight (or good morning) to another 365 days of love in all its beautiful, messy glory.

13. Renew Your Vows

It doesn't have to be formal: You can simply take a few intimate moments to recite your wedding vows to one another—or create new ones based on what you've learned the previous year.

14. See Live Theater

Get all gussied up for a night at the theater or opera. Tickets not in the budget? You can stream professionally filmed theater performances and musicals on services like BroadwayHD . Lower the lights, clasp hands during the romantic ballads, and you have an intimate theater experience right at home.

15. Go on a Romantic Boat Ride

Whether it's a dinner cruise or a ferry ride around your city, staring out into the water with your loved one is the stuff romance novels are made of.

Ultimately, celebrating a relationship milestone should be joyful—so look to these fun anniversary date ideas for a guaranteed good time.

16. Go Camping (or Backyard Camping)

If you don't have time to hit the wilderness, pitch a tent in your backyard, make some stovetop s'mores and fall asleep together beneath the stars.

17. Visit the Zoo or Aquarium

Embrace your inner child and explore the exhibits. (You'll likely still get a thrill when you spot your favorite animal!)

18. Take a Cooking Class

Learn some new skills in the kitchen that you can put to use for date-night-ins to come.

19. Tour a Winery, Brewery or Distillery

Choose your favorite spirit collectively and then spend the day clinking glasses to your future.

20. See a Concert

If none of your favorite artists are in town, venture out to see a band you've never heard of before. You might just discover some local gems!

21. Paint and Sip

Head to a local studio that leads you through a painting class as you sip on glasses of wine (or your nonalcoholic beverage of choice). You'll both walk away with a unique piece of art as a souvenir from the night.

22. Go Skydiving

Up for a heart-stopping adventure? Take a leap of faith together and embark on this daring anniversary date.

Collage of sex toys and massage candle from online places to buy sex toys

23. Book a Photo Shoot

Score some fun pro pics of the two of you at this special point in your relationship. Book a local photographer and then unleash your inner models .

24. See a Drag Show

Enjoy a fabulous show and share the celebration with some local queens. (Remember to tip your performers well!)

25. Rent a Canoe or Kayak

Share an outdoor adventure—and get a bonus arm workout while you're at it.

26. Go Ice-Skating

Hand-holding on the ice and then cuddling up with hot chocolate, afterward? Yes, please.

27. Visit a Botanical Garden

Stop and smell the roses—both literally and figuratively. (You have much to reminisce on, after all!)

While these cheap anniversary date ideas may be inexpensive in cost, they're rich in thoughtfulness, proving you don't need to break the bank when planning a memorable night.

28. Breakfast for Dinner

Put on your PJs (or, better yet, a little bit less ) and dig into stacks of pancakes, crispy bacon and warm waffles for your anniversary dinner.

29. Browse a Bookstore

Wander around the aisles and buy a book you'd think the other would like. If you want to make it a tradition, you'll have a whole library's worth after a few years!

30. Have an At-Home Spa Night

All it takes is some inexpensive sheet masks, a sensual bubble bath for two and some massage oil candles to transform your home into a bonafide spa resort.

31. Kitchen Table Wine Tasting

Secure a few bottles of inexpensive wine from a local grocery or liquor store, then play sommelier at the kitchen table as you sip, explore flavor profiles and find your faves. You can even theme the wine to the year you met or a special destination, like your honeymoon locale. (Spanish cava, anyone?)

32. Have a Game-Night Face-Off

Hold the ultimate game night with classic board games and card games specifically for couples . Winner choose this year's holiday card photo!

33. Throw a Party for Two

Pay a visit to a local party supply or dollar store and score balloons, noisemakers, inexpensive decor and party hats, and throw yourselves a silly little party for two. It is a celebration after all! (Just don't forget the ice cream.)

34. Wander Around a Museum

Local museums often offer discounts or free tickets to residents. (For example, New Yorkers can choose their own entry price at museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art.)

35. Take a Hike

Explore a nearby trail, or plan for a more extensive excursion during a weekend getaway. A selfie and kiss overlooking a vista? We're lacing up our boots now.

36. Make a Time Capsule

Select a few mementos from the previous year (or from over the course of your relationship) and seal them in a box that can only be opened on an agreed-upon date.

37. Build a Blanket Fort

Rearrange your living room to build the cozy blanket fort of your childhood dreams. (Bonus points for string lights, a silly movie to watch inside and snacks to share.)

38. Plan a Picnic

Enjoy an alfresco meal for two on a budget by packing for a picnic. Sunshine, sandwiches, your partner—what more does one need?

39. Sign Up for a Virtual Airbnb Experience

From origami lessons taught in Japan to a virtual tour of a New Zealand sheep farm , you and your partner can share a far-flung experience for less than $20 per person with Airbnb's online global experiences .

40. Fast Food Face-Off

Choose a fast-food menu item, such as french fries or milkshakes, and then spend the day going from drive-through to drive-through as you rank each restaurant's noshes.

41. "Decorate" Your Dream Home at Ikea

Did we get this idea from 500 Days of Summer ? Yes, yes we did. Wander around the store and role-play buying furniture and fixtures for your dream home together. End the day by splitting an order of Swedish meatballs. (Just be sure not to cause any inconvenience to employees!)

This year, surprise them with an out-of-the-box activity as unique as your relationship. Look to the creative anniversary date ideas below for inspiration.

42. Rent Out a Movie Theater

Many cinemas allow you to rent out an entire theater for the ultimate movie night. Is it a little over the top? Perhaps. But the occasion certainly calls for it!

43. Choose Thrift Shop Clothes for Each Other for a Fancy Night Out

The more ridiculous the outfits, the better!

44. Road Trip Without a Destination

Gas up the car and go wherever the road takes you . With your love sitting in the passenger seat, it's bound to be an adventure.

45. Revisit Your First Date

Whether it was at that dive bar downtown or coffee at your favorite cafe, revisit the spot of your first date and prepare for the memories to come flooding back.

46. Order a Date Night Subscription Box

Feeling spontaneous? Let fate decide your anniversary date by ordering a date night subscription box . These packaged surprises come with everything you and your partner need for an evening of quality time.

47. Find the Quirkiest Tourist Attraction Within Driving Distance

The mermaids of Weeki Wachee, Florida? Seattle, Washington's gum wall? The petting zoo of plastic flamingos in Cedar Point, North Carolina? Wherever you go, just remember to hit the gift shop!

48. Plan a Scavenger Hunt

Have your partner find their way to a sentimental location using custom clues based on details from your relationship.

49. Recreate a Memorable Meal, Drink or Dessert You've Shared

50. Get a Couples Tattoo

Is it a forever decision that shouldn't be made spur the moment? Absolutely. But once you've weighed the risks, go ahead and make your love permanent .

51. Go Axe-Throwing

Hit up an axe-throwing venue if you have one in your city and get ready for some friendly competition!

52. Do a Dessert Crawl

Go from bakery to ice cream shop, indulging in the very best sweets your city has to offer.

53. Take a Pottery Class

You may not be able to recreate that scene from Ghost , but you can at least celebrate your anniversary by learning something new together.
