When my bestie said “Let’s plan for a heritage tour open bus ride. It starts from Churchgate. I will book the evening first slot, let’s meet at Churchgate station” I nodded, allowing excitement blend with expectations develop in me. So from Andheri catching a local train, along with another bestie we headed to Churchgate. Being a fast train, hardly 25mts we were out of the train. Waiting for the other besties to join, let me share a few details about Churchgate station.

Churchgate station

Churchgate station is the last station and entry point to South Mumbai Via train. There are totally four platforms where every 10 or 15mts once trains come and leave. Filled with lot of eateries, you shouldn’t miss dosa, cheese spicy sandwich, kadak chai and amul milk shakes. As you come out of the station don’t miss viewing the buildings around. They have British architecture that after sunset, each building is colorfully lit arising you the question, “Was this the building, I saw in day light?”

After sunset

From this station you could either walk for 20mts towards Chatrapathi Shivahi Maharaj Vastu Sanghrahalaya or catch taxi or cab from this station side, else cross the road and catch the cab from opposite side. You wont be dropped exactly in front of the museum for there is a right signal paving way for exit. Either you would be dropped few yards before or few yards away or on the opposite side of the museum.

The road facing the drop point

The pick up point is exactly on the exit gate of the museum facing - The Indian Navy circle. You would find a navy ship, a fountain opposite and museum facing them. If you are confused you could enquire with the traffic police in that area, else click on your Google map walking icon, making your arrival easy to the point.

The fountain opposite to the museum

Once you arrive see that you show your tickets in the counter, near the museum and get confirmed seats with numbers. Since booking is done through Book my show app, using QR code your ticket confirmation is done along with allocation of seat number. You might find confusion in seating but the bus conductor solves it by checking and rechecking. In fact he checked our tickets thrice. Hereon starts your journey.

Before that let me share about the open bus. A double decker, with open top, that railings are provided to hold and sit. The name of the bus is Nilambari open deck. Bottom part of the bus is the same as a normal bus, while top portion of the bus is designed. There are variety colors of this bus, red, brick red, light green and light blue. We rode on light blue bus. Though booking shows 6.30pm and 8.30pm, still there is a bus that starts at 5pm wher you get to witness sunset. The bus is decorated with drawings of historical places of Mumbai on all sides.

Another open deck bus

Finally hearing to the start of the bus, first move made us all scream “Yahoo the bus is moving finally”. Turning right of the museum signal towards Gateway of India crossing Taj hotel, we tried to click selfie with the hotel passing by. Then crossing via Colaba first building that comes to your eye view is Mantralaya also known as Sachivalaya, the secretariat headquarter of Mumbai.

Mantralaya building

From this signal starts Marine drive coastline. Seeing the dark empty ocean, from top was something. As the bus crosses the whole lane you get to spot the necklace road chain, starts from one end and completes with view of the buildings on the other side. This view is the most beautiful view to encounter, after dark crossing array of signals, hugging your arms around you, trying to protect yourself from cold winds blowing from the sea, just sitting and watching the sea go past you is truly awesome.

Photo of Have you tried open deck bus ride in Mumbai? If no this article is for you by Radhika Narasimhan

Here one thing you should remember, signal holdings, branches, leaves, low laid bridges almost cross your head, at an inch gap. As the bus moves faster so do these cross over your head, in a jiffy. If you know what is coming over your head then you are safe, else there is every chance of getting hurt, for some branches pop up suddenly. However there is one such signal where the bus stops and a branch stupes over you, giving you access to click pics.

The stuping branch

From here the same road proceeded towards Chowpatty beach that I couldn’t miss the view of eatery shops. Here again chill air takes over, making you feel the coolest air. From chowpatty signal the bus turns towards Colaba side the opposite side of the way we came. Only difference it gets into Colaba and Churchgate lane.

The turning signal

From here you get to view must iconic historic spots of Mumbai. Starting with Oval maidan where yesterday India vs Srilanka match was happening, we moved towards clock tower, asiatic library, horniman circle, Bombay highcourt, Navy dockyard and gets into churchgate side. Moving over high rise buildings, statues, art gallery, Churchgate shopping area we reached the starting point where our bus halted.

Not wanting to get down, but you had to leave, though my heart was heavy and I was tempted to try another ride, some kind of rejuvanation got into me as I stepped out of the bus. The whole ride I would title as “Blend of culture, historic and important places to visit in Mumbai”. Viewing each building, standing majestically, colorful made my heart leap and shout “wow”. I could trace thoutline along with its lovely architecture. The lights were subtle, colourful but not jazzy, which portrayed the beauty of each spot.

Clicking enough pics, selfies we walked back to the station to reach home. Before I complete the article here are a few details and tips to ride on this bus.

- Per head cost ranges between Rs.180 to Rs.200.

-Try to get corner seat, if at all you got the aisle no worries stand up and view.

-As the bus goes fast, if you are sitting hold the railings, if you are standing hold the seat rods.

-Arrive 15mts prior to the bus stop and don’t forget to show your ticket in the counter and get confirmed seat number.

-Buy chips, biscuits in hand, for till entering marine drive there is lot of traffic and journey might extend 20mts more.

-While standing and clicking photos hold your phone tightly, for as the bus speeds, things fly around you and there is every chance of you to drop your phone.

-Last but not the least, don’t forget to look down from the top of the bus, here things look very different from top view. As, you look up, the buildings view appear like they are scrapping the sky and looking ahead you get to view the city roads plus lighting’s. At the same time watch out for branches which might hurt you.

One of the must ride bus of Mumbai which starts from Churchgate and ends in Churchgate.

One of the best bus routes, we visited in the world. History of Mumbai and the Art Deco tour was very informative. Heritage site of CST was looking awesome during Diwali night. Tour Guide was amazing.

best open bus tour mumbai

Route of tour is very good. Guide is also very good Drive is good. Would like to see additional routes in future. As it is a double decker bus, getting in is trouble some for elderly and people with mobility issues. They must do something for this. Also, you will have to mind trees during the journey.

Very good service by Mtdc and Best. The tour guide is very informative and passionate about his job .

This is a project by Mumbai tourism. I happened to visit this bus tour due to my friend who visited my city from Delhi. Nice experience to see my own city from different perspective.

My family and I went for the Nilambari Open Deck Bus tour, last month, and we really enjoyed the experience. The bus tour starts from the Gateway of India; it showcases major South Mumbai tourist attractions such as Mantralaya, the Queen’s Necklace, Vidhan Bhavan, Asiatic Library, Hutatma Chowk, CST station and so on, without any stops. The tour guide provided an interesting and informative commmentary about each place. It is best to buy an Upper Deck ticket to get an unrestricted view of all the attractions, in the bus route. My only complaint is that there is no option for online booking and one has to personally go to the Gateway of India booking office to purchase tickets. It is highly advisable to book the tickets, at least, two days in advance. This tour is highly recommended for everyone to get a glimpse of famous landmarks in South Mumbai, at night. Trivia: This bus was used to parade the Indian cricket team when they won the World Cup in 2011, at the Wankhede stadium.

MTDC Ho-Ho (Hop-ON Hop-Off) Bus Tour

Updates December 2022: After the open deck bus tour , The much-awaited (Planned in 2014 & Tour buses procured in 2016) Mumbai Darshan tour services by MTDC are final and by end of December 2022, 2 Buses with a capacity of 45 Mumbai darshan passengers will be seen touring around selected main sightseeing locations of Mumbai and Suburbans.

Below is the list of attraction places and fares (Both Tentative). By early 2023, a total of 11 such buses will be on the road to cater to tourists availing of the services. One of the special things about this bus tour is that one or more Government places will be on the attractions list which is not possible by private tour operators.

Below are the details which were planned initially and will be updated soon once the HO-HO bus tours are operational.

Unrestricted by time for any spot you enjoy at this one-day Mumbai darshan bus is what the Ho-Ho services differ compared to the regular tourism bus that moves around the city. This means tourists can Hop-Off at any destination for any amount of time and can catch another next bus in the queue to continue the tour ahead between fixed timings of 8:00 Am and 9:00 Pm.

About 11 Semi-Air-conditioned open-roof double-decker buses are ready for tourists willing for One day Mumbai darshan tour. This service from MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism Department Corporation) is quite similar if you have already experienced HO-HO (Hop On, Hop Off) services in other cities like Delhi and Goa.

With a fixed route planned to start in South Mumbai and End at the North suburban location of Borivali, This Mumbai Darshan tour will be much more convenient with more facilities like never before.

Beautiful-looking double deckers buses with a seating capacity of 26 people will start their route from CST at every 1-hour interval and will have about 25 tourist attractions covered along the route as detailed below. The Rooftop will be open which is fun during winter and monsoon, Yet summers can be adjusted at the lower deck which is Air conditioned with snacks and toilet facilities all inside.

Mumbai Darshan Ho-Ho Bus Highlights

  • Total Tourist Spots : 25.
  • Timings : Daily operation timings will be between 8:00 Am & 9:00 Pm. Every hour 1 bus and the Expected timings of one complete tour is 1 Hour as per planned, But practically it will take much more.
  • Ticket Charges : Yet to finalize, Yet Per Person charges will be around Rs.500.
  • Facilities : Snacks & Toilet facilities inside bus AC section.
  • How Different from Other Mumbai Darshan : No time restriction, Get Down at any attraction, Enjoy as much as wanted, and hop on in the next coming bus with the same ticket.

Tentative Planned Bus Route

CST    Flora Fountain     Bombay High Court     Shivaji Museum     Gateway Of India    Marine Drive Promenade    Taraporewala Aquarium     Girgaon Chowpatty     Hanging Garden     Mahalakshmi Temple     Haji Ali Dargah     Nehru Planetarium    Shri Siddhivinayak Temple     Mount Mary Church     Bandra Bandstand     Juhu Chowpatty     Aarey Colony     Goregaon Filmcity     Borivali National Park .

Which attractions takes more time

Although every spot in this Mumbai Darshan tour is unique, I would like to recommend and share my experience on where one should spend more time, Or say which tourist spot will need more of your time. Below are the same.

Quick Move / Less Time-Consuming Tourist Spots

Flora Fountain, Bombay High Court, Gateway of India, Marine Drive Promenade and Girgaon Chowpatty, Mahalakshmi Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, Mount Mary Church, Juhu Chowpatty.

Below are attractions that will need more time

Shivaji Museum, Taraporewala Aquarium, Hanging Garden, Haji Ali Dargah (Long Walk), Nehru Planetarium, Bandra Bandstand, Aarey Colony, Goregaon Film City, and Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali.

Regular Old Mumbai Darshan Bus Services by MTDC

IMP NOTE: Although we update this article with the latest charges, cancellation process, contact, and other details related to this tour, The frequency of updates is not guaranteed, and visiting MTDC’s official Mumbai Darshan website for latest updates is recommended.

Foreign nationals might be wondering what the word DARSHAN means. So let me help it clear before going ahead with other details, This Hindi word means ‘SIGHT SEEING’ and according to Indian Mythology, it is used major when seeing any God / Goddess, which means getting Darshan.

The tourism department of Maharashtra focused on South Mumbai jewel and sightseeing locations to be coved for these 2 tour packages their services operate only on SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS (Weekends). The beginning looks great with the service offered and sure more improvements are possible with feedback from citizens and tourists. Why South Mumbai? Because that is where BOMBAY started with.

It’s the prime location that has maximum Structures, Old Heritages, and Edifices that are stupendous and a must to be seen in a day tour for a tourist visiting Mumbai. Below are details of the two routes covered.

Mumbai Darshan Tour/Itinerary 1 (CST to SOUTH MUMBAI to CST)

Dates : MTDC updates tour dates online for the current and Upcoming months, So you need to register and log in to their official website to check the available dates. Days : Only on weekends i.e. Saturday and Sundays. Starting / Pick up Point : For this Itinerary, CST (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Bus Depot) is where the tour starts from. Timings : 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Charges / Entry Fees / Cost : Below are the detailed tour packages per person for adults (Above 12 Years of age) and Children (3 to 12 Years) (All Inclusive taxes). Kids below the age of 3 years have free entry. According to my understanding, a few attractions in the list of Mumbai Darshan tours have individual entry fees, and the below package, charges are designed accordingly. If one selects the Silver package which has low fees, then individually has to go to destination ticket counters to get an entry ticket by paying charges which may be time-consuming. Charges and fees may vary from time to time. Bus Service Type : BEST AC Buses . Also see BEST bus routes . What Languages Bus Guide Speaks : Hindi, Marathi, and English. As experienced at starting the week, the Guides were not professionals with limited knowledge about attractions and by-pass locations. Meals (Breakfast, Lunch, etc) : According to the MTDC website it is not included, But the latest tourist experience gives snacks and lunch within package fees. Siddhivinayak Temple Prasad Costing Rs.50 charges extra, Any food items, etc purchased have to be paid personally. For updated lists and terms visit their website. Tickets Cancellation is : Deductions / Cancellation charges are according to the date you do the cancellation from the tour date, i.e Before 15 days (5% of the cost), Before 8 to 14th day (25% deduction), Before 4 to 7 days (50% refunded), Less than 4 days of the tour (No Refunds). Tour Brochures : No handy brochures are given which actually should be that will help the tourists get some help on locations and sightseeing locations that are covered. Foreign nationals and citizens from other states who visit Mumbai for the first time have absolutely no idea of where city attractions are.

Big support. Very helpful. Going to Visit Mumbai. Preparing for Mumbai Dharshan with the help of your posting!

BUT, NOT ABLE TO FIND ANY ONLINE PORTAL FOR BOOKING THE ONE-DAY PACKAGE. The link goes in and on without any hint of online booking of a package tour! Honestly speaking, Karnataka state Tourism, Orrisa state Tousim, and Tamilnadu Tourism all have direct hassle-free links for package tours.

BUT, Horrible, not find any helpful links in MTDC OR MSRTC except booking for rooms!

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Taraporewala Aquarium

This sightseeing place in Mumbai is one of the largest aquariums in the city of Mumbai. Situated in Marine Drive, this aquarium was founded by D. B. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist, in the year 1951. The aquarium has a twelve feet long three-sixty degrees glass tunnel that holds interesting marine life. There are several species of fish here, such as damselfish, butterfly fish, tiger fish, angelfish, moss, sea urchins, sea cucumber, marine eels, etc

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.
