Great place for the family. The children loved feeding and interacting with the farm animals. The tractor ride was certainly a hit! A very enjoyable time, had by all.

Rhonda recommends Kiwi Valley Farm Park.

Great place for family weekends! The park has a vast territory with various artefacts presented in the form of antique equipment. Here nature and animals are the hosts, and people are guests. Very beautiful views, cute animals, interesting trails to explore. I am sure that the park will appeal to both children and adults!

Anastasia recommends Kiwi Valley Farm Park.

What a great place! Beautifully maintained with happy, healthy animals. Plenty of shady play areas to chill out in when the kids need a break from the heat. A must see for parents with kids who love animals. Their annual pass is great value too, so glad to get one today!

Linda recommends Kiwi Valley Farm Park.

Awesome family day. So much to see and do. The kids love to feed the animals and jump on the tractor for a ride. Short drive from city to get here. Cafe is also nice to enjoy before or after your visit.

About the TSS Earnslaw

The TSS Earnslaw is an integral part of Queenstown’s pioneering history and to this day a Queenstown icon.

She was commissioned by New Zealand Railways to service the communities around Lake Whakatipu. Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslaw’s maiden voyage was on 18 October 1912.

Soon known as The Lady of the Lake, she provided an essential link between the isolated farming communities along the lake and the outside world.  At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the Lake and carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies.

Nearly scrapped in 1968, she was rescued and purchased by ReaNZ and put to work once again carrying passengers around the Lake. Since then the TSS Earnslaw has been painstakingly restored to its original condition – everything you see is pretty much like it was 100 years ago. Today, the TSS Earnslaw is the only coal fired steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere, making her one of the most unique experiences in the world.

The TSS Earnslaw has featured in several movies including a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as an Amazon River Boat. Parts of the trawler SS Venture in Peter Jackson’s King Kong were inspired by the TSS Earnslaw. Famous composer Ron Goodwin composed a piece of music inspired by the rhythm of the TSS Earnslaw’s engines.

About Walter Peak High Country Farm

Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Whakatipu, is steeped in history. Its sheltered bays were used as camping sites by Maori travelling to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers on Moa hunting and pounamu (greenstone) gathering expeditions.

European settlement commenced in the 1860s with initial farming attempts by Von Tunzelman. Stock deaths, snowstorms and lack of money eventually forced him off the land.

Following a quick succession of owners, Walter Peak Station was taken over in the late 1880s by the Mackenzies. This family is credited with developing many of the principles of successful high country farming during their 80 years working the property.

At its peak, the station was one of New Zealand’s most famous with 170,000 acres, 40,000 sheep and up to 50 fulltime employees. The original homestead block of Walter Peak Station is now known as Walter Peak High Country Farm.

Over time various permanent homes were established and these included the Colonel’s Homestead with its beautiful lakeside gardens. Originally built in 1902, it was carefully reconstructed in 1977 following an accidental fire.

Walter Peak family recipes:

Scrumptious Savoury Scones

2 cups plain flour 4 teaspoons of baking powder ¼ teaspoon of salt 50 grams of butter 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup grated tasty cheese 1 ½ cups of milk Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Then rub in the butter. Add the finely chopped onion and grated cheese. Mix to stiff dough by adding the milk. Turn out onto a floured surface, lightly knead and roll out to approximately 5 cm thick. Cut into pieces and place on floured tray and cook for 15 – 18 minutes at 200C. These are tasty fresh but leave for a day, slice in half and butter. Place some of the chopped onion and grated cheese mix on the top and grill.

Perfect Homemade Pikelets

2 eggs 2 tablespoons of sugar 2 cups plain flour 4 teaspoons of baking powder ¼ teaspoon of salt 2 cups of milk Beat together 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of sugar until creamy. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.  Mix to a thick batter with approximately 2 cups of milk. Spoon onto a hot griddle, turn over when bubbles appear and cook until pikelets spring back when pressed.  May be served buttered or decorated with cream and jam.

“Fabulous Farm Excursion”

Walter Peak Farm Tour

"Upon arrival we were "entertained" with a shearing show run by Cameron. This gave us an insight into shearing of sheep and also the rounding up of sheep with his amazing sheep dogs King, Sue & Bess. This was all infused with some fine humour on Cameron's behalf.... totally entertaining."

This was one of the highlights of our trip. We boarded the steamship and it took us across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Farm. Afternoon tea was very good, and the view across the lake from the tea rooms was lovely. We were so lucky to have a sunny day, the scenery is incredible. Beverly S, via Trip Advisor
Great for families or adults who are big kids at heart. The animals all come running down to meet you as they know there is food about. You can hand feed them - and get slobbered on - or just watch. The sheep shearing is a must see if you are in New Zealand and we got a good demonstration here. Very knowledgeable and genuinely interested staff. dianedinky, via Trip Advisor
Absolutely loved it!! We did the afternoon tour with afternoon tea. The boat trip was really enjoyable and was great to explore the boat museum and steam room. And then when we got to the farm, Tim our guide was really great to listen to and very informative and entertaining. Afternoon tea was also very delicious. W ould highly recommend this tour to anyone, especially those with kids Odyssey19447172586, via Trip Advisor
I  love this trip! This was my third time and I would go again. The TSS Earnslaw is a beautiful vintage steamboat with an excellent cafe and bar. Visit the engine room and see them shoveling the coal. Walter Peak farm is in an idyllic situation, a magical place where time seems to stand still. The animal feeding is great fun (especially Dougal) and the sheepdog demonstration is very impressive. The dogs can be patted and stroked, and love the attention. The afternoon tea was very upmarket with beautiful little cakes, savoury and sweet scones and mini sandwiches. You can eat as much as you like! The staff at the farm are outstanding. Our guide Peter was so knowledgeable and interesting and clearly loves his job and his super intelligent dogs. JulieOO_13 Auckland, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor
Brilliant trip, recommended by a family member and we booked the 2pm sailing from Queenstown. Oh my, what a total treat. Everything was perfect, from the Earnslaw itself (polished brass, very polite staff, the chance to watch the boiler being stoked plus good coffee and snacks) to the farm experience. The weather could have been better but we didn't care it was absolutely perfect for us all. The opportunity to meet and feed the farm animals, learn about their personalities, watch the dogs at work, chat with the guide then yummy high tea! Sadly not enough time to browse in the shop there, full of tempting goodies... But maybe my husband thought that was a good thing! Do go. melanie s Nelson, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor
A lovely boat ride to the farm where we were greeted by the farm dogs who put on a great show of their skills with sheep. Then off to the BEST buffet I’ve ever had!! Beautiful variety and all cooked superbly. Then a wander around the farm to feed the animals. All in all a wonderful day, can’t praise it enough!! Phillip W Brisbane, Australia, ViaTripAdvisor
We did the cruise trip and Walters Peak Farm visit plus afternoon tea. Two adults and one 3 year old. 100% worth the time and money. Consider it a “must do”. The cruise was not busy and had a nice café/drink shop. Also a coal engine your could go down and watch (very interesting for kids and adults alike). We had an extremely friendly and knowledgeable local tour guide on the farm. Lots of animal feeding and a great sheepdog show. Nothing went on for too long to become boring. The afternoon tea was perfect; scones warm off the oven, best I have ever had. Don’t hesitate, do it! Aiat Shamsa, Via Google
What a fabulous way to spend time on beautiful Lake Whakaitipu. Just being on TSS Earnslaw and see how it has been kept in tip top condition was worth the trip. It was such a bonus to experience a beautiful barbecue lunch at Walter Peak Station - very delicious in the most amazing setting. We loved seeing the animals, beautiful gardens and sheep dog demonstration. A day we won't forget for a very long time. Jill H Melbourne, Australia, Via TripAdvisor

We unanimously agreed it was the best group trip we had ever been on. We had the perfect balance of farms and towns etc but the farm visits were extraordinary!  We could not fault the organisation and the stimulation we enjoyed through travelling with Farm To Farm Tours.

D Barton, Whanganui

“Top notch farm and agricultural visits”

We have been working with Farm to Farm Tours since 2007. Our groups rave about the wonderful service, friendly people, top notch farm visits and breathtaking scenery. Farm To Farm’s ability to showcase the best of their country is most impressive. It is very evident that they have an extensive network throughout New Zealand with quality farm visits and ag related stops. The Farm To Farm tour managers always pay special attention to the individual passengers and have excellent knowledge about New Zealand agriculture.

T Trump-Humbert, USA

“Our tour to Canada was a remarkable event!”

Our FTF tour to Canada was a remarkable event which was far beyond our expectations. Great travelling companions and magnificent landscapes every day. It was a mighty change for us, learning much about Canada’s farming industry. Seeing the grandeur of the Rockies and glacier fields, Calgary and all its’ horse riding spectacular, stunning Niagara Falls, charming Quebec, all staggering. Glorious weather all the way.

R Allan, Marlborough

“The only way to travel!”

I would definitely recommend your tours to all. The right amount of city, country and relaxation. The only way to travel in a foreign speaking country!

S Hanna, Canterbury

“A wonderful way to see a country ”

The hospitality was exceptional. For us it was about travelling with like-minded people and the really good mix of farming visits and touring the regions that we were in... It is simply a wonderful way to see a country and meet the people who live there.

B Voss, Manawatu

“One to remember!”

I would like you to know that our trip to New Zealand was above our expectations. The tour guide, bus driver, hotels, New Zealand people and farm hosts all made this trip one to remember and I would recommend it to anyone.

Wanaka Lavender Farm, New Zealand

Who dosen’t love the bright blue purple lavender flower and when they are viewed blooming en-masse in a lavender farm they look even more stunning. To appreciate lavender at it’s best, it is usually best to visit lavender farms in New Zealand between November and the end of January when the flowers are blooming. Remember to watch out for the bees with the kids, as they also love the levender and are pollinating the blooms. Here are our favourite New Zealand lavender fields to visit with your family and friends, including three in Auckland!

CCT Lavender Farm in Karaka, Auckland

CCT Lavender is an organic lavender farm in Karaka in South Auckland which opened to the public in 2020. There is a large Farm Cafe which is open from Tuesday to Sunday with a fenced indoor kids play area and a giant chess set which is onsite.  The lavender fields are open in December, January and February and require an entry ticket which includes cutting your own bunch of lavendar. Note you can’t see the lavender fields from the cafe, due to the hedges and fences between the cafe and the field.
