Justin Timberlake’s ‘Man of the Woods’ Tour Opens: Photos + Set List

Justin Timberlake brought his supplies and then some Tuesday night (March 13) to the opening of his  Man of the Woods Tour  in Toronto, Canada.

The "Filthy" singer, whose fifth studio album dropped in February , wowed the crowd at the concert series' first stop, mixing classics like "My Love" and "Summer Love" with new album favorites like "Say Something" and "Flannel."

Timberlake also gave space for his background singers to shine — the group crooned to "Dreams," Ex-Factor," "Come Together" and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" during a medley of covers in the middle of the show.

The  Man of the Woods Tour  will spend another night in Toronto on March 15 before making its way to Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago. It's currently scheduled to wrap up on January 29, 2019 in Chicago after four legs.

Justin Timberlake is one of the greatest live performers of all time

By Alim Kheraj

Justin Timberlake, arguably the world's best male pop star, should never have been that guy with a guitar at a party you avoid at all costs. Yet on his last album, Man Of The Woods , JT ventured as close to a folksy, guitar-wielding Henry David Thoreau impression that producer Timbaland’s beats and the singer’s own R&B-tilting vocals would allow.

Unlike Thoreau’s Walden , however, Justin Timberlake’s Man Of The Woods Tour, which made its way to London’s O2 Arena last night, doesn’t preach simple living, introspection or self-sufficiency. Sure, Timberlake has stuck to his album’s theme: dotted along the enormous S-shaped stage that covers the entire arena floor are fake trees, with the tip of the S dedicated entirely to long grass. There are also projections of forests throughout and at one point even a campfire sing-a-long (more on that later). But the Man Of The Woods Tour isn’t some trite Bon Iver tribute act; from the first few minutes it becomes apparent that Timberlake didn’t just come to play. He’s building a future for himself in these here woods.

Opening the show with Man Of The Woods ’ lead single, “Filthy”, Timberlake deconstructed the pulsating track, laying out the intricate production and building it to a smashing conclusion. Matching the futurism of that song were more lights than a UFO landing; precision lasers roamed the stage, circling around dancers and Timberlake himself as he marched down the snaking stage to the centre ring. Barely five minutes, flanked by dancers, a dance break followed, swiftly dispelling any accusations that Timberlake may be encroaching on awkward dad territory.

He referenced “It’s coming home”, which kicked off an arena-sized rendition of “Three Lions"

It’s here, too, that the first of the intricate stage projections began. Before launching into “Midnight Summer Jam”, fabric descended from the ceiling, with projections creating a 360-degree, almost holographic experience as wolves and wilderness engulfed the arena. Technologically speaking, there was nothing back-to-basics about the production of this musical spectacular that, at times, verged on sensory overload.

For the next almost two hours, Timberlake’s show continued at a propulsive pace, veering carelessly from massive hits to lesser known newer album tracks to deep cuts, all without a pause for breath. From “LoveStoned”, where a special camera somehow turned the star into a Windows Media Player visual equaliser, he moved into an electric rendition of “SexyBack”, then two new songs, “Man Of The Woods” and “Higher Higher”, before segueing into “Señorita”. He did it seamlessly and with so much energy that it left the crowd hysterical, shouting the call-and-response that closes out this JT classic.

From here, Timberlake entered into the string of his imperial hits: “Suit & Tie”, an excuse for the singer to soak up and draw in the audience’s frothing excitement and show his skills as a dancer thanks to more lasers and a mic stand; “My Love”, which he performed with a sampler, like a pseudo Jack Garratt; “Cry Me A River”, which, thanks to projections, saw the audience become the raindrops from the music video while the dancers and Timberlake tell a story of betrayal among lashings of dry ice; and “Mirrors”, the night’s highlight and one of the greatest songs of the last ten years. Projections helped tell the song’s story, images of Timberlake’s wife, actor Jessica Biel, appeared at the song’s intro before shifting to flashes of the singer himself for the chorus. As he said, it was like a mirror staring back at him. Amid a stampede of percussion, the song reached a dramatic climax as Timberlake threw himself on the ground.

It’s the sort of song and performance that would close out a regular arena show, but not this one. Instead, again barely taking a breather, the show mutated again, but not before Timberlake took the opportunity indulge in an “It’s coming home” reference, which kicked off an arena-sized rendition of “Three Lions". Then, shifting the focus away from digital projections and synchronised light shows, there was an attempt at “rootsy” Americana, all acoustic guitars, bluesy vocal harmonies and Southern horns. For perhaps longer than it warranted, Timberlake marched through deep cuts as a setup for the campfire.

These 15 best indie albums of all time are a riot of hedonism, adolescence and smudgy eyeliner

By Jack King

What is there to say about the campfire except that Timberlake has clearly never been to Glastonbury . Unlike the usual crusty, guitar-strumming sing-a-longs one usually expects — and, yes, there is an actual campfire on stage — the singer made his way through “Until The End Of Time” and then a number of covers, giving him a chance to showcase his backing singers. For a show that started at 100 miles-per-hour, it was a shock to the system, but gave the audience a chance to rest their feet. It dragged a bit during Man Of The Woods cut “Morning Light”, but Timberlake knew it and, like the snap of a branch, went back to crowd pleasing.

The wistful “What Goes Around…/…Comes Around” was played solo with that trusty acoustic guitar, now glued to the singer, giving the song a transient and ghostly slant. This etheric moment was cut short, however, when the clacking drums of “Say Something” kicked in. Despite this song’s oblique socio-political commentary (whether it is good or bad to say something is never quite clear), “Say Something”, from his fifth solo album, now joins the list of Timberlake’s defining songs. Whether it’s the rousing chord progression, the power of the vocal harmonies or the song’s horn section, at the O2 it became a "moment". So much so, in fact, that it was a shame not to end the set here and have the singer lope off before an encore.

Instead, Timberlake crammed as much content into the two-hour show as possible, perhaps to his detriment. The not-so-classic “Montana” was a steep comedown from the euphoria of “Say Something” and “Summer Love”, a deep cut from FutureSex/LoveSounds was superfluous. And because of this overstuffing, hits such as “Rock Your Body” and “Like I Love You”, complete with their original choreography, weren’t given their moment in the sun (or by the campfire). They’re even broken up by “Supplies”, the worst offender from Timberlake’s Man Of The Woods .

With more than two decades of experience, he knows how to maintain an audience’s attention

After the display of cutting-edge production, sexy AF choreography and swelling of sheer musicality, it was an anomaly to end the show with JT’s naffest single, “Can’t Fight The Feeling”. The singer himself was disinterested in actually singing during the finale, instead letting the audience, already so hyped they could pop, sing the song’s saccharine lyrics. To his credit, Timberlake held onto the crowd until the closing seconds, with the usual suspects dancing through rather than sloping off to the Tube to miss the rush.

And that’s what Justin Timberlake and the Man Of The Woods Tour has as its secret weapon: captivation. With more than two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, he knows how to maintain an audience’s attention, how to mould them so they’re pumped at his signals and (mostly) when to take his foot off the accelerator. It allows for a smattering of lesser-known and crucially maligned material; even when the songs aren’t as strong, Timberlake’s performance was still powerfully magnetic as he burst from one song into another.

Similarly, unlike a legacy artist, his show is still exciting, carefully crafted to bring fans the best in audio-visual technology while ensuring that, musically, things line up too. Timberlake’s band, The Tennessee Kids, are some of the greatest live musicians in the business, clearly, and as the star, he lets them shine just as bright. Not that he’s ever eclipsed; Timberlake’s talent is awe-inducing as he deftly serves the vocals and choreography of someone with something still to prove. It’s a reminder that, sure, Man Of The Woods might not have been an instant classic or universally loved, but that Timberlake is one of music’s greatest entertainers and will be remembered as such. It’s a title that, after last night’s spectacle, feels well deserved.

Was there anything more to announce, the late-night show host prompted his musical guest? Well, yes, “we are still putting the setlist together for Irving Plaza,” noted Timberlake.

But wait, there was more.

“I’m going on tour,” was the dry response.

The 10-time Grammy Award winner gave fans a taste of things to come earlier this week with the release of “Selfish,” the first cut from EITIW . He’ll be back on our screens when he serves as  musical guest  on  Saturday Night Live  this weekend, with Dakota Johnson hosting.

Though his solo music career has been in deep freeze, Timberlake did return to his boy band roots last year when he reunited with  *NSYNC  for “Better Place,” which accompanied the JT-starring animated family film  Trolls Band Together . The track  started at No. 25 , for *NSYNC’s lucky 13 th  appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 and first appearance on the tally since “Girlfriend” featuring Nelly reached No. 5 — way back in 2002.

As a solo artist, Timberlake has landed 19 titles in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, including five No. 1s.

Details of the Forget Tomorrow World Tour have yet to be announced. Watch the big reveal on Fallon’s late-night show below.

Justin Timberlake gets soulful in Seattle

Michael Rietmulder

Concert review

Justin Timberlake was in his element. Gliding, sliding and stepping across the stage like an air-walking Morris Day out in front of an 11-piece band and brigade of dancers during an opening “No Angels” on Thursday.

The disco-pop romper off Timberlake’s new album, “Everything I Thought it Was,” is in step with the disco revival of the last few years but took on a more vintage flavor while kicking off his first of two Climate Pledge Arena shows.

“There ain’t no angels here on the dance floor,” Timberlake sang, though he and his dancers sure floated like they had halos over their heads.

More than 20 years since going solo from ‘N Sync, Timberlake arrived in Seattle, just the second stop on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, no longer at the center of the pop universe — and that’s perfectly OK, maybe even for the best.

Despite some savory moments, both this year’s “Everything I Thought it Was” and his previous album, the awkwardly framed “Man of the Woods,” were met with critical shrugs and the court of public opinion has shifted on Timberlake since the days when he had America in stitches with “Saturday Night Live” skits and palling around with celebrity bud Jimmy Fallon. Not that it’s diminished his star power, which is still bright enough to pack an arena — twice. (Timberlake, who hit the stage shortly after 9 p.m., will tackle Climate Pledge Arena again Friday night.)

None of the external noise or think-piece narratives mattered when the stage lights hit and Timberlake, who’s been performing since he was 11, does what he does best. One of this century’s most well-rounded entertainers, the classic song-and-dance man is cut from a cloth that doesn’t exist in the contemporary pop landscape quite the same way it once did.

The R&B-influenced prince of pop and sultan of FCC-friendly innuendo is a direct disciple of Michael Jackson. But he was equal parts James Brown on a punchy “LoveStoned,” the Timbaland-produced hit off Timberlake’s second solo album “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” Timberlake has more intentionally claimed his Memphis roots in recent years and his crack band the Tennessee Kids gave the mid-2000s cut a ‘60s soul revue appeal.

For better or worse, much of Timberlake’s best work is timestamped to the 2000s, thanks in part to the way his frequent collaborators Timbaland and the Neptunes defined the era’s sound. Thanks largely to the Tennessee Kids, many of the songs were unbound to the production trappings of the day, retrofit with timeless organic textures.

After a crushing “Cry Me a River,” which could have hit an even higher gear had Timberlake not taken it easy on those signature falsetto choruses, the sprawling Tennessee Kids got time to shine on “Let the Groove Get In.” The skittering, chiming percussion boiled over into a stomp-around jam, hitting like a horns-blasting march down Beale Street. Later, during a light-footed newbie “Play” drawing on ‘80s electro-funk, the horn section and a crew of dancers joined Timberlake in a full procession to a secondary stage on the opposite end of the arena.

Hopping to the floor to make his way through the crowd, JT stopped to greet a fan who was cradling a stocky little bulldog. “Honestly, this is the first dog I’ve had at my show,” a surprised Timberlake remarked. “Is this a Seattle thing?”

Timberlake and the band were most in their bag mining the soul, funk and disco sounds of yore, at one point beefing up the candy-shop love song “Pusher Love Girl” with swelling gospel vocals and doo-woppy charm. But it was hardly their only look.

“Sanctified” packed a full-blown arena-rock crunch, and late into his nearly two-hour set, Timberlake broke out an acoustic guitar for stripped-down renditions of this year’s “Selfish” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around.”

While the focus was kept on Timberlake and crew’s shoulder-popping choreography, a giant rectangular LED box that hovered and shifted above the stage was the centerpiece of the tour’s production. After a breezy “Rock Your Body” and embracing 2000s club hedonism on “SexyBack,” a harnessed-up Timberlake returned for his “Mirrors” encore atop the LED vessel that carried him above the crowd. With arms spread wide, JT leaned over the edge as the illuminated platform tilted to a 45-degree angle, making like Kate Winslet on the Titanic for a dramatic finish.

When Timberlake reunited with ‘N Sync (after years of resisting fans’ pleas) to record “Better Place” for the “Trolls Band Together” soundtrack and the song “Paradise” off his new album, some critics viewed it as a tacit conceit that Timberlake could no longer generate the same level of fervor on his own. A friendlier read is that the former boy bander and Mouseketeer, now a husband and father in his 40s like much of Thursday’s millennial-heavy crowd, is comfortable enough in his career arc that he no longer feels the need to distance himself from his past.

While both are likely true to some degree, Timberlake came off self-aware and self-assured on Thursday, joking as he briefly took a seat before a steamy dance routine during “Technicolor” that “I’m 43, so I gotta sit down for a second.”

At various points in the night, a reflective Timberlake paused to address his journey with the sort of clarity and gratitude that comes with age and stability. “If you’ve been rocking with me for two decades, almost three decades, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said after jokingly wishing a millennial fan a happy 21st birthday.

At the end of the day, that’s the connection that matters.

Music | Review: Justin Timberlake is a terrific performer with a mediocre songbook

Justin timberlake kicks off two-night concert stand in san jose..

Justin Timberlake, seen here at a show in Hollywood in April, has opened a two-night concert series in San Jose at SAP Center.

So, he’s pretty much seen it all when it comes to audiences. Yet, he still seemed mighty impressed by the reaction he was getting from the packed house of some 12,000 fans on Monday (May 6) at the SAP Center in San Jose.

“Y’all got so much energy tonight,” said Timberlake, who also was set to perform Tuesday at the same venue. “That’s how we feel tonight in the Bay Area?”

How could we be feeling any other way? After all, one of the best pure entertainers in all of pop music was in the house and grooving like nobody’s business.

Timberlake is nothing short of a marvelous performer, boosting great dance moves, plenty of charisma and star power, an ability to connect deeply with a crowd, solid comedic timing and a knack for showing his fans a good time.

The one hole in his game remains his songbook, which — six full-length studio albums and a plethora of other musical projects into his career — remains mediocre at best. The result is that so much of the 29-song, two-hour set was pretty forgettable, musically speaking, as Timberlake chugged through one shiny but bland pop-soul number after another.

The fact that these mostly mundane numbers worked in the moment, and evoked so much excitement from the crowd, is certainly further testament to Timberlake’s prowess as a stage performer.

Taking the stage just after 9 p.m., Timberlake opened this stop on The Forget Tomorrow World Tour by leading his 11-piece backing band — dubbed the Tennessee Kids — right into “No Angels.”

It was the first of 11 songs he’d play from his latest studio effort, “Everything I Thought I Was,” which certainly didn’t help his cause when it came to trying to put together a winning setlist.

The album is shaping up to be Timberlake’s first real bomb, having just been released in March and — shockingly — already fallen out of the Billboard 200. (To help put that in perspective, consider that 2001’s “The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates” currently sits at No. 87 on that same chart.)

It continues a trend that began with 2018’s “Man of the Woods,” which also was a commercial disappointment, at least by Timberlake’s once-lofty multiplatinum standards.

The upside of JT no longer being the top former boy-band star — a title firmly wrestled away by Harry Styles a few years back — is that we seem to be inching closer to a possible reunion tour with NSYNC. Timberlake already recorded some new music with his old band — including the song “Paradise” on the new album — and he’s certainly savvy enough to realize he needs to do something to stay in the spotlight in the years to come.

Right now, however, Timberlake still has enough fans at his side from his first three albums — the blockbusters “Justified” (2002), “FutureSex/LoveSounds” (2006) and “The 20/20 Experience” (2013) — to not only draw, but thrill huge crowds.

The tour’s production elements helped keep the fans entertained — of special note being a large video screen monolith that was moved, tilted and hoisted in different ways throughout the show. It resembled the big stone monolith from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the brilliant 1968 Stanley Kubrick film that many of the younger fans in attendance probably wouldn’t be familiar with. In one moment, it seemed to pulse with cosmic energy, like what you might see in a film like “Avengers: Endgame” — and I half expected that Thanos might pop out of it at any second.

Now that would have been good entertainment!

Timberlake did a great job connecting with the crowd throughout the night. Notably, he charmed the audience when he stopped to chat with a 10-year-old girl — named Bella — near the front of the stage. He then turned and playfully scolded Bella’s mom.

“Do you know how much profanity I have in my show?” he joked.

Sixteen songs into the set, Timberlake and company partied their way through the crowd — while belting out “Play” — to a small stage set up in the back of the area. From there, he’d deliver one of the best moments of the night as he led the crowd in a lovely singalong of “Until the End of Time.”

“That is without a doubt the best I have ever heard that song,” Timberlake remarked at the song’s conclusion. “Thank you, San Jose.”

He’d then move back to the mainstage — while singing the “Trolls” film anthem “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” — and then rolled into “SexyBack,” a tune that certainly hasn’t aged well and is feeling more and more like the “I’m Too Sexy” of its day. (Actually, come to think about it, the Right Said Fred number is much better than the Timberlake hit.)

Like the best entertainers often do, Timberlake saved the best for last and closed the show in high-flying style as he boarded that same video monolith and floated out above the crowd while powering through a fine version of “Mirrors.”
