What Happened Between Johnny Depp And Ricky Gervais?

Ricky Gervais and Johnny Depp had no problems throwing verbal jabs at one another.

If Hollywood celebrities were to make a composite list of their most favorite people, Ricky Gervais would most likely appear nowhere near it. The British comedian was for a long time the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's number one choice to host their annual Golden Globe Awards events.

Between 2010 and 2020, the creator of The Office was invited to take on the gig a total of five times, including for three consecutive years until 2012. In the 2011 ceremony, Gervais took aim at the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie movie The Tourist , which had been nominated in three categories in the previous year's event.

Following his brutal roast of the movie and what he termed as its lack of merit to feature at the Golden Globes, the grapevine started bustling with rumors that Depp and Jolie were absolutely offended by the jokes at their expense. It wasn't until about one year later that the Pirates of the Caribbean star got to exact his revenge on Gervais, in a cameo on the latter's mockumentary sitcom, Life's Too Short .

The pair would also appear on The Graham Norton Show at around the same time, and ultimately quash any whispers of discord between them.

Ricky Gervais has never been one to hold back on any topic he felt he wanted to address, as is often evidenced by his very ruthless posts on social media . When he got the chance to return to the Golden Globes as host for the second consecutive year in 2011, he brought that same heat with him to the event stage.

Among those targeted in his incessant roast that evening were celebrities like Charlie Sheen, Hugh Hefner, Robert Downey Jr., as well as Tim Allen. Even host network NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association were not spared. Gervais targeted Home Improvement actor Tim Allen as he welcomed him and Tom Hanks to present an award in one of the categories.

"What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer, writer, and director, whose movies have grossed over $3.5 billion at the box office. He's won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances," Gervais said of Tom Hanks. "The other... is Tim Allen."

The Tourist had lost out to Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are Allright in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category at the 2010 Golden Globes. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie had also been nominated, for Best Actor and Actress respectively, although they were also beaten to the accolades by Paul Giamatti ( Barney's Version ) and Annette Benning ( The Kids Are Allright ).

The Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck romantic thriller film would become one of the big targets for Ricky Gervais in his monologue, as he poked fun at its writing, and hinted at corruption in the nomination process that saw it in contention for the three awards.

"It was a big year for 3D movies this year," said Gervais. "Seems like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in The Tourist ." As the crowd gasped at the sharp jab, the comedian said, "I feel bad about that joke [because] I'm just jumping on the bandwagon. Cause I haven't even seen The Tourist ... Who has?"

In November 2011, Johnny Depp finally got the chance to get back at Ricky Gervais , albeit in a staged set-up. Following the successful American adaptation of his famous sitcom The Office , the Englishman had started working on a similar show titled Life's Too Short for BBC Two.

Depp appeared in the second episode of the first season, armed with some jokes of his own aimed at Gervais. The two stars were featuring on the show as their real-life selves. The Pirates star hit out at his would-be nemesis for his attacks on The Tourist , as well as on Tim Allen.

"What is nastier than Ricky Gervais' jokes? His teeth," Depp started. "Why do people take an instant disliking to Ricky Gervais? Because it saves time!" "Why did Ricky Gervais do a series of audiobooks? So that the blind could hate him as well," he continued. The scene ended with the actor storming out of the room in a fit, acting still frustrated at the comedian.

In an appearance on The Graham Norton Show soon after, however, Gervais confirmed that there was no blood between them saying, "This [notion that there is any bad blood] is ridiculous."

In Gervais' upcoming TV series "Life's Too Short," Depp pretends — just pretends — to be angry at jokes Gervais made about Depp's box-office failure "The Tourist" during the Golden Globes.

"I actually got together with a few pals after the awards, and we wrote some jokes about you,” Depp says to Gervais in the scene, released online.

He adds: "I want you to know this, and I want you to carry this with you for the rest of your days: No one makes fun of Tim Allen on my watch, and gets away with it."

People took the video, or stories about the video, seriously, assuming Depp was really angry at Gervais.

The comedian responded this morning via Twitter : "This is why mankind is finished. Loads of people think the Johnny Depp clip is real. I kid you not. It is 100% scripted! Unbelievable."

Ricky Gervais was right – how the ‘worthless’ Golden Globes lost their sheen

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

If an awards show happens in a swanky Beverly Hills hotel and there’s no one around to watch it, does anyone still care? That’s the philosophical conundrum facing the Golden Globes in 2022, which are set to go ahead this Sunday despite not being broadcast on television by NBC for the first time since 1996. There will also be no live audience, no red carpet and, according to Variety , no stars either handing out or collecting the once-coveted baubles. Just two years ago, the Golden Globes were the sort of glitzy Hollywood occasion where Brad Pitt would happily bound on stage to collect an award as A-Listers like Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese and Cate Blanchett applauded from the front row. This year, it’s a conference room meeting that could have been an email. How exactly did the Globes lose their sheen?

It’s all to do with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the tiny group of international journalists and critics that has run the Golden Globes since they were founded in 1944. By that time, the Academy Awards were already established as the preeminent film awards in Hollywood, having been handed out since 1929. In 1956, the Golden Globes added awards for television and began building a reputation as the brasher counterweight to more formal ceremonies like the Oscars and the Emmys. They were also decidedly boozier: a typical bash would see attendees finish off 9,000 glasses of Moët & Chandon champagne. Hosting the Golden Globes in 2012, Ricky Gervais helpfully delineated the difference between the rival awards. “For any of you who don’t know, the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem,” quipped Gervais, to much laughter from the assembled stars. “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton,” he continued. “A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought – allegedly!”

The suggestion that a Golden Globe – or at the very least, an unearned nomination – could be bought by the wealthy and powerful had by then dogged the HFPA for decades. In 1982, Pia Zadora beat out hotly tipped stars like Kathleen Turner to win New Star of the Year, shortly after HFPA members had been flown to a casino in Las Vegas by Zadora’s multimillionaire husband Meshulam Riklis. Three decades on, similar whispered allegations surrounded the nomination of the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie stinker The Tourist , whose distributor Sony also flew HFPA members to Las Vegas – and threw in tickets to a Cher concert for good measure.

Accusations of financial impropriety at the HFPA grew still more serious last February. A week before the pandemic-hit 2021 Golden Globes show in which most nominees dialled in via video call, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation into the HFPA which found that the group regularly pays its members – which at the time numbered just 87 people – substantial fees for appearing on its various committees, with the total sum nearing $2m. That figure was more than double what the group had paid out just three years earlier, and had led even some HFPA members to wonder aloud whether the organisation’s leadership were using the significant windfall generated by the Golden Globes broadcast as a get-rich-quick scheme. “It’s a beautiful idea to take the money from NBC and give it to good causes like tuition and to restore films,” one anonymous HFPA member told the LA Times . “But there is a spirit now to milk the organisation and take the money. It’s outrageous.”

That was by no means the extent of HFPA’s troubles. There was also the fact, highlighted by a social media campaign by Time’s Up, that not a single one of its 87 members was Black. A full six years on from #OscarsSoWhite, this lack of diversity among HFPA members (relatively few of whom actually work full time for major international news outlets) was compounded by some baffling nomination decisions. Notably, in 2021 the widely panned first season of Emily in Paris was nominated for two Golden Globes, while Michaela Coel’s superb, critically acclaimed series I May Destroy You was completely ignored. Was this evidence of racial bias, inquiring minds wondered, or was it anything to do with the fact that no less than 30 HFPA members (a third of the organisation!) had been flown to Paris by the producers of Emily in Paris where they were wined and dined and put up in a $1,400-a-night hotel?

Neither potential answer reflected well on the HFPA, and they acknowledged that clearly some sort of change was needed. In May 2021, their leadership announced a package of reforms including increasing the number and diversity of their members, the establishment of new senior administrative positions including a chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer, and the introduction of an oversight board for what they called “critical organisational reform”. Hollywood’s response? Too little, too late.

First came the streamer boycotts: both Amazon and Netflix announced they were suspending dealings with the HFPA until after reforms had been made. Next came the A-List revolt. In a damning statement, Scarlett Johansson urged the entire industry to join the boycott. “As an actor promoting a film, one is expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences as well as awards shows,” she said. “In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences. The HFPA is an organisation that was legitimised by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organisation, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.”

Tom Cruise agreed, and mailed the Golden Globes he’d won for Born on the Fourth of July , Jerry Maguire and Magnolia back to the HFPA in another embarrassing development for the beleaguered organisation. On 10 May, just a week after HFPA leaders had optimistically launched their plans for reform, NBC announced that as “change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right”, they would not be broadcasting the Golden Globes in 2022.

The question the HFPA will be hoping Sunday night’s subdued Golden Globes answers is whether they really have been putting in that work. They have, at the very least, diversified their membership. In October, they announced that 21 new members had joined the organisation, with much fanfare given to how diverse the group is (according to HFPA, of the 21 new members: 48 per cent identify as women, 29 per cent identify as Black, 24 per cent identify as Asian, 29 per cent identify as Latinx and 19 per cent identify as Middle Eastern/North African). While this new cohort may have increased the size of HFPA by 20 per cent, it still remains tiny compared to, for example, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars. The Academy has somewhere around 10,300 members, of whom roughly 9,400 are eligible to vote on the Oscars. As Johansson suggested in her statement, the implication is that the much smaller voting pool involved in the Golden Globes makes it much easier for decisions to be swayed by studios seeking to spend their way to a publicity boost.

The Golden Globes have a reputation problem, and it’s one that’s been festering since long before their current predicament. When he returned to host the awards once again in 2016, Ricky Gervais used his monologue to call them “worthless” and told the assembled stars that they were merely “a bit of metal that some nice old confused journalists wanted to give you in person so they could meet you and have a selfie with you”. If the Globes are to shine once again, the HFPA will have to prove their champagne-soaked awards are more than just an excuse to hand out prizes to whoever had the fanciest press trip.

Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes: Laughs, Gasps and Cringes

The comic is returning to host the awards show a fifth time. Here’s a look at his most memorable moments.

Ricky Gervais will return to host the 2020 Golden Globes on Sunday, and once again no one will be safe. Not the nominees. Not the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that sponsors the awards. And not even NBC, which broadcasts them.

The British comedian has hosted four times in the past, from 2010 to 2012, and then again in 2016. Each year, he seized the opportunity to roast as many stars as possible. Past targets include Cher, Tom Cruise, Hugh Hefner, Bruce Willis, Jodie Foster, Justin Bieber, Jeffrey Tambor and Ben Affleck.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Gervais said he had aimed to entertain a global audience rather than please the celebrities in the room. “I try and play the outsider,” he said. “I’ve got to be the bloke sitting at home who shouldn’t have been invited.”

Gervais has said this will be his last time as Globes M.C. But then again, he has made such claims before. While onstage in 2010, he said: “One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe. Officially.” After a brief pause, he shrugged and added, “I’m not going to do this again anyway.”

As this year’s nominees gear up for a night of nervous laughter and eyebrow-raising jabs, here’s a look back at some of Gervais’s most memorable moments at the Globes.

Target: Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson has been Gervais’s recurring victim. In 2010, before introducing the actor, Gervais stood behind the podium with a glass of beer in his hand and said, “Honestly, I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”

When Gervais introduced Gibson again in 2016 , he said he wasn’t judging the actor back in 2010. “Listen, I still feel a bit bad for it,” he told the crowd. “Mel’s forgotten all about it, apparently. That’s what drinking does.”

Target: Tim Allen

In 2011, Gervais introduced Tom Hanks and Tim Allen with a biting jab at Allen.

What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer, writer and director, whose movies have grossed over $3.5 billion at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances, starring in such films as “Philadelphia,” “Forrest Gump,” “Castaway,” “Apollo 13” and “Saving Private Ryan.” The other … is Tim Allen.

The actors hit back. “Like many of you,” Hanks said, “we recall back when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian.”

“Neither of which is he now,” Allen added.

Gervais recently said he regretted making the joke and that he hoped Allen didn’t take it personally: “I didn’t want Tim Allen to think, ‘Oh, that was written for me. Why me?’ Well, because you were standing next to Tom Hanks.”

Target: Everyone in the Room

During his opening monologue in 2010, Gervais started off by blasting everyone . “Just looking at all the faces here reminds me of some of the great work that’s been done this year … by cosmetic surgeons,” he said. “You all look great.” The camera abruptly turned away from Meryl Streep and cut to a wide shot of a different table. Yikes.

Target: ‘The Tourist’

In 2011, Gervais poked fun at Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, who starred in the romantic thriller “The Tourist.” The film received negative reviews but managed to earn three Golden Globe nominations. “It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional,” Gervais said. “Except the characters in ‘The Tourist.’”

He went on say the movie wasn’t nominated solely so that members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association “could hang out with” Depp and Jolie — it was also because the actors were bribed.

Target: Caitlyn Jenner

For the most part, Gervais was a tad tamer during the 2016 ceremony. The one exception was a joke aimed at Caitlyn Jenner, who had been involved in a fatal car crash in 2015. “What a year she’s had,” Gervais said. “She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?”

Target: Hollywood

Gervais does not just go after stars — he goes after show business as a whole. In 2010, he addressed the overwhelming emphasis Hollywood places on actors . “We all know writers get way too much credit in Hollywood,” he said, “and that’s due to the generosity of actors sometimes mentioning them.”

He continued: “I don’t want to keep going on about actors but they’re the most important ones, O.K.? It’s not the words you say. It’s how good you look when you’re saying them.”

In 2016, he made an all-too-true observation about the gender pay gap in the entertainment industry. “All-female remakes are the big thing. There’s a female remake of ‘Ghostbusters.’ There’s going to be a female remake of ‘Ocean’s Eleven.’”

“And this is brilliant for the studios,” he said, “because they get guaranteed box office results and they don’t have to spend too much money on the cast.”

Target: Robert Downey Jr.

When introducing Robert Downey Jr. in 2011, Gervais delivered a one-two punch. First, he wondered whether some of the actor’s films, including “Iron Man” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” were actually pornography. Then he went even further: “He has done all those films,” Gervais said, “but many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.”

Target: The Cast of ‘Sex and the City 2’

During his opening monologue in 2011, Gervais went after stars who were not nominated for any awards, like the cast of “Sex and the City 2.” “I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster,” Gervais said. “Girls! We know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of ‘Bonanza!’”

Target: Madonna

Even Madonna was not immune. In 2012, he introduced the star, saying, “She’s always vogue, she’s a material girl and she’s just like a virgin.” Then he let out a not-so-subtle cough.

But Madonna had the last laugh. Onstage she responded, “If I’m still just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don’t you come over here and do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years.”

'The Tourist': Why the Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp Flop Deserves a Second Look

Yes, it tanked at the box office. But the movie is worth watching, if only as a curiosity.

TheTouristBen_post.jpg

Columbia Pictures

Few recent releases have flamed out quite so spectacularly as The Tourist , which opened stateside in December to tepid reviews and slower-than-expected business, and almost overnight became an object of ridicule. There have lately been money-losers of much greater magnitude (this month's Mars Needs Moms , for instance), but The Tourist 's unique combination of flawless pedigree—Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, white-hot European director—and overall inertness made it an easy target. The film, nominally a classic action-romance picture trafficking in international mistaken-identity intrigue and outlandish financial crimes, essentially boils down to ball gowns, timepieces, and really nice stationery, and so viewers are faced with a choice between indulging in its lavish appointments, or beginning to make jokes at its expense.

Most seemed to choose the latter option, including Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais , who in his opening monologue memorably demystified the film's two Globe nominations, its only awards-season recognition: "I'd like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes." Cut to Depp, who was hiding behind a pair of sunglasses, chewing gum, his face fixed in a wince. The feature-length co-star of Gervais's joke arrives on home video this week (and on Netflix next month), offering a good opportunity for reappraisal. It should first of all be declared that The Tourist , in which British agent-gone-dark Jolie entangles unwitting math-teacher tourist Depp in a dangerous attempt to reunite with her mysterious fugitive lover, is not top-to-bottom rubbish. The second feature from German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck—easy to forget, since his debut, The Lives of Others , was such an assured (if unsubtle) piece of filmmaking—is indeed a bit of a sophomore slump, but it doesn't quite deserve its low reputation, either.

In her championing of the Venice-set film, Movieline 's Stephanie Zacharek extended the movie's elevation of really nice stuff from mere set dressing to full-blown theme, by comparing the star vehicle to a cocktail—"a Bellini, fizzy and sweet and dry all at the same time." While The Tourist 's tonic qualities might be disputed, it does offer some substantial pleasures, particularly of the dry variety. These mostly come courtesy of Depp, in bewildered mode throughout, cast into a plot whose mechanics he can't fully grasp, but almost casually accepting of every new development—recalling his career-best work in Jim Jarmusch's 1995 anti-Western Dead Man . Here Depp's character, Frank, dazedly stumbles through shootout chases and police interrogations, as if one of his beloved spy thrillers has sprung to life around him (Frank fumbles with a paperback called The Berlin Vendetta when Jolie's Elise takes a seat across from him on a train).

Aside from its minor pleasures, though, The Tourist might also wind up enduring as a kind of curiosity. In a Daily Beast postmortem on the film, one of Nicole LaPorte's sources offers that "[von Donnersmarck] was interested in making a movie that was about elegance and the glamour of stars. It was not supposed to be a hard-edged thriller. He wanted to make a style piece. That may have been a miscalculation." The "elegance" and "glamour" of two of Hollywood's brightest stars is indeed here thrust to the fore, even more so than usual. What's more, there are hardly any other concerns occupying the foreground. The thriller elements and the dialogue here seem almost deliberately by-the-numbers, so as not to distract from the sheer star wattage.

The Tourist is, at its core, a movie about the nature of seeing and being seen, featuring a perhaps-not-entirely-inadvertent barebones, feminist-film-theory-inflected demo of classical Hollywood patriarchy. Depp, the disheveled, down-on-his-luck, paperback-reading teacher from Wisconsin, serves as the audience's (male) point of identification. For her part, Jolie is objectified to an almost absurd degree, constantly watched by (exclusively male) surveillance experts. At one point the mere sight of her prompts Frank to inadvertently blurt out the PG-13 film's token "fuck," and Elise renders speechless nearly every man she encounters, as if even these thunderstruck waiters and bellhops inside the movie are unable to process her as anything other than a fantasy, a glamorous apparition, a totally bewitching flicker of light. The audience is, of course, also implicated in all this looking.

The final scenes of The Tourist attempt, with mixed results, to complicate and maybe even half-heartedly critique these power dynamics, turning a few tables and imparting to certain players more agency than they initially seemed to have. The film ultimately skews more toward knowing tease than coherent statement, but at its most intriguing The Tourist plays like a movie turned completely inside out, an espionage movie willing to spy on its own inner workings.

Johnny Depp slams Ricky Gervais in 'Life's Too Short' -- VIDEO

No one ever doubted that you would get your comeuppance Ricky Gervais, but kudos for somehow making it happen on your own show, to your own benefit. Brilliant! In case you missed it, Gervais called out, well, pretty much everybody at last winter’s Golden Globes. He had particularly nasty things to say about Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie’s nominated film The Tourist , but Depp has now been given the chance to retaliate via an appearance on Gervais’ upcoming BBC2 comedy series, Life’s Too Short .

The show stars Warwick Davis (Willow!!!) as the head of a talent agency for little people, and Gervais recurrs as himself. In the clip, Depp strolls into the office and passive-agressively vents his Gervaisian frustrations in the form of backhanded compliments. “How great for you,” he deadpans when Gervais says he’s been writing his own films. “That must be so great.” Ha! It’s childish, and I love it. Watch the clip below:

Does this remind anyone else of the Louis CK/Dane Cook joke-stealing face-off of summer 2011? Like Gervais, Louis plays a version of himself in that series, and both showdowns were mutually beneficial. I mean, Depp was even able to tease Dark Shadows , his upcoming Tim Burton directed remake of the 1960’s gothic soap opera, which is going to be amazing. It mean, it has to be . It can’t not be. But the question is this, PopWatchers: Did you laugh? Let us know in the comments, and stop making fun of Tim Allen!

That's karma for you! Johnny Depp seeks revenge on Ricky Gervais for trashing his film The Tourist at the Golden Globes

He caused his fair share of controversy when he hosted the Golden Globes earlier this year, by poking fun at celebrities including Charlie Sheen and Ewan McGregor.

But Ricky Gervais must have known that some of his more close to the mark quips would come back to haunt him.

And now Johnny Depp has sought revenge on the British comedian, berating him for making fun of his movie The Tourist at the awards ceremony.

However, the debate was not quite as it first seemed, as Depp is actually appearing in a sketch for Gervais and Stephen Merchant's new comedy TV show Life's Too Short.

In the scene, Depp is seen meeting up with Gervais and Merchant after being introduced to them by Warwick Davis, who plays the head of a talent agency.

After being introduced to Merchant, Depp sees Gervais, and makes his feelings about him very clear when he stubs a cigarette out into his glass of water.

Asked by Davis if he had met Gervais before, Depp replies: 'I actually remember him from the Golden Globes.'

When Gervais then asks Depp how he's doing, the Hollywood actor replies: 'I'm fine, man. Just doing another film that's going to make loads of money, probably a lot more money than any film you've ever made. And you?'

Gervais replies: ' Just writing - I write and direct all my own stuff.'

Depp then goes on to talk about his upcoming movie projects, including a film with Tim Burton and Helena Bonham-Carter, telling Gervais: 'She thinks you're an idiot!'

Gervais then starts nervously laughing before asking Depp, 'I'm sorry, have I done something to offend you?'

Depp retorts: 'What do you mean? Like trashing me in front of 200 million people at the Golden Globes?'

To which an unapologetic Gervais answers: 'That was a while ago, they were jokes Johnny.'

Depp then makes reference to Gervais poking fun at Toy Story 3 actor Tim Allen at the awards, telling him: 'I actually got together with a few pals after the awards, and we wrote some jokes about you.

'I want you to know this and I want you to carry this with you for the rest of your days: No one makes fun of Tim Allen on my watch.'

The on-screen banter between Depp and Gervais comes after The Office comedian blasted The Tourist - the thriller Depp made with Angelina Jolie - at the Globes.

He said during the ceremony: 'It was a big year for 3D movies. Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron.

'It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in The Tourist. I already feel bad about that joke. I'm jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven't even seen The Tourist. Who has?'

He later added: 'I'd like to quash the rumours that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.

'That is rubbish, that is not the only reason - they also accepted bribes.'

Life’s Too Short starts on 10 November on BBC2. The Making Of… is on 5 November on BBC2.

Best & Worst of the Golden Globes! Ricky Gervais Roasts Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen...

With all of Hollywood to choose from--Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Lopez were in attendance--so who did Ricky Gervais insult this year?

MOBILE: Get the free Live From the Red Carpet app for iPad, iPhone and iPod

Best Opening Jokes: The host of the show, Ricky Gervais, didn't hesitate sticking it to the cast of Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, the cast of Sex and the City, Hugh Hefner and...well, just relive some of his more caustic comments:

- "It's gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast."

- "It was a big year for 3-D movies: Toy Story. Despicable Me. Tron. Seems like everything this year was three-dimensional--except the characters in The Tourist."

- "And I'd like to quash this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes."

- "All that happened was some of them were taken to see Cher in concert. How the hell is that a bribe? Really, Do you want to go see Cher? No. Why not? Because it's not 1975."

- "Also not nominated: I Love You, Philip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then...My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

Most Surprising Supporting Actor: Christian Bale proved that not only is he not the brooding thespian, but actually a very funny British guy. (Unless he was just channeling Gervais as some kind of Method actor thing.)

Hottest Table? Robert Pattinson and Helen Mirren were seated opposite each other, we presume to prevent the table unseemly rumors and/or to protect the place from bursting into flame.

Most Succinct: "Screw that, kids!"--Glee's Chris Colfer, telling teens who are bullied or feel unsupported at home or who feel like they can't have what they want because of who they are.

Best Reaction: Robert De Niro laughing like crazy at Gervais opening remarks revolving around an oral sex joke. If only that new Fockers movie had been so funny.

Worst Use of a Precious Resource: You get Justin Bieber in the house, and all you let him do is read off the animated film choices? We're pretty sure he's allowed to see PG movies too, people.

Best Actor, and Most Compelling Reactor: Colin Firth not only gave a great speech for his Best Actor win, but he also showed class by always looking absolutely rapt at whatever was going onstage, without attention-getting tricks such as weeping (Lea Michele), cuddling (Brangelina) or gum chomping (Depp).

Worst Surprise: Stanley Tucci was in Burlesque? (What? We didn't see it.)

Most Potent Introduction: Eva Longoria introducing Philip Burke...no, wait, Ricky Gervais introducing Eva's intro to the HFPA honcho, which involved a toilet, false teeth...and Burke making a veiled threat about the fate of Gervais' next film. Maybe it was a joke? Hard to tell what he was saying through those false teeth, right?

Least Lingering Question: What runs through the minds of winners who don't get to speak, standing quietly next to their more famous cowinner?

Wackiest: The Fighter's Melissa Leo gave a wonderfully daffy speech that included a joke (we think?) about spending "those few hours we spent in the Maritime Hotel" with David O. Russell was a highlight.

Most Retro Introduction: After suggesting that many of Robert Downey Jr.'s films sound like porn flicks, Gervais added, "He has done all those films but many of you in this room know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford clinic, and Los Angeles County Jail." Seriously, is that the first thing we need to mention about the guy anymore?

Most Scarily, Serious-Sounding Intro... Following that Downey came out and said, "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"

...Followed by Most Comic Follow-Through: Downey then continued in a mock-serious tone to suggest that, "I don't know if an actress can do her best work...until I've slept with her." Up until that moment, you had us going there, RDJ. Put we were pretty sure you were having us on when you said, "I'd give it to all five of you. At once. The award. Right here. Centerstage in front of my wife, the audience and millions of viewers." Iron Man, indeed! Maybe Gervais was onto something with the porn talk?

Most Fascinating Presenters: Impossibly dramatic Tilda Swinton and Geoffrey Rush looked ready to solve a crime or kill someone or something else. (Just listen to Swinton purr titles like, "The Pillars of the Earrrth! And you know she's serious.)

Least Serious Serious Actors: It was a night when the serious actors were anything but: De Niro cracking jokes about his back catalog! Matt Damon pretending not to know who De Niro is! Paul Giamatti rhapsodizing about Montreal, Godiva chocolates and Halle Berry! With all that comedy, who needs comedians? (Probably no one mentioned by Gervais, that's who!)

Sweetest Moment: The Big Bang Theory's Kayley Cuoco jumping for joy when announcing that her costar Jim Parsons had won his first Golden Globe. That was topped only by Parsons' own speech, which was funny, self-deprecating and gracious--down to apologizing to his nephew for not being able to come to his birthday party.

Most Fun: Glee's Jane Lynch quipped, "I am nothing if not falsely humble," before calling attention to the work of Glee writer Ian Brennan with "He is a deranged young man."

Best Underlying Theme: While many people commented on the hard work of women in the Industry (and the world at large), Aaron Sorkin said it best in a comment he addressed to his daughter at home, "Smart girls have more fun."

Biggest Question: Did Gervais effectively killed off the trend of having an acid-tongued, no-holds-barred comedian as awards show host? Tell us in the comments!

Ricky Gervais Gives His Honest Thoughts On The Johnny Depp And Amber Heard Case

Ricky Gervais Gives His Honest Thoughts On The Johnny Depp And Amber Heard Case

"i hate having to go through it".

Daisy Phillipson

Daisy Phillipson

Ricky Gervais has given his honest thoughts on the Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard trial. Check it out:

While the comedian is famously outspoken about a number of topics, he maintained an unbiased opinion while speaking about the highly publicised defamation case.

Many of you will be well aware that Depp is currently suing Heard for $50 million (£38.2 million) over domestic abuse claims she made in a 2018 article in The Washington Post.

The trial enters its sixth and final week at Virginia's Fairfax County Circuit Court today (23 May), with proceedings set to wrap up on Friday.

Ever since it kicked off back in April, social media has been awash with opinions about the ongoing legal battle, with many siding with the Pirates of the Caribbean star .

Johnny Depp waving to fans outside of the courthouse.

Gervais and Depp are longtime friends, having collaborated for The Office creator's comedy series Life's Too Short .

But when quizzed about the case during a recent interview with street journalist Adam Glyn, the 60-year-old star kept his opinion balanced while still offering up his thoughts on the media circus surrounding the trial.

"I stay away from all that, I don't really look at that celebrity stuff, even though this isn't celebrity [stuff] is it - but I try not to have it in my head," he explained.

"I don't think either of them are going to come out of it as a win because all of your private stuff... I don't know, I hate having to go through it and it's even weirder that they televise a court case.

"So I don't really do that stuff."

Ricky Gervais says he 'tries to stay away' from the media frenzy surrounding the case.

Numerous people agreed with Gervais' attitude, with one writing on TikTok: "He’s so right, the entire court case is a weird situation. Here, let’s point and laugh at a very serious court case that could become case law."

Another who empathised with the comedian said: "Poor Ricky... he was put on the spot and obviously didn't want to comment negatively. I've never seen him stutter so much."

A third wrote: "Well done Ricky he could have taken a that opportunity to make a humerus comment. Fair play to him playing it straight."

While it's yet to be seen what the outcome of the trial will be, there's still a number of days left until the jury decide whether Heard did defame Depp in the op-ed.

Amber Heard is being sued over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post.

Speaking about the decision, Kimberly Lau, a partner at New York legal firm Warshaw Burstein and an expert in libel and slander, previously told Sky News : "The opinion of one is not enough; all seven must agree.

"And while judges, unlike juries, already have an understanding of the law, the jury is comprised of several individuals whose life experiences can have an impact on how they view and weigh the evidence at trial.”

Watch Johnny Depp Rip on Ricky Gervais About the Golden Globes in Guest Appearance on LIFE'S TOO SHORT

Johnny Depp Rips on Ricky Gervais About the Golden Globes on LIFE'S TOO SHORT. Life's Too Short is a British comedy series from Gervais.

Back in March we learned that the British comedy series Life's Too Short from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant , the creators of the UK version of The Office , would feature some great guest stars like Jerry Seinfeld and Johnny Depp alongside series star Warwick Davis (best known for playing Wicket the Ewok and Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter franchise). The series won't hit HBO until sometime next year (though it will air across the pond before then), but now we have an absolutely hilarious clip of Johnny Depp meeting Ricky Gervais and absolutely tearing him a new one about his jokes during his hosting stint at the Golden Globe awards. Of course, it's all in good fun as Depp has his fedora handed to him a couple times as well. And if there's one thing you'll learn from this clip, is that Depp is quite a big fan of a certain 90's sitcom star. See the clip from Life's Too Short after the jump.

An unexpected bit of Golden Globes trivia is that the annual ceremony barely had hosts before 2010. Then Ricky Gervais steamrolled in, bending the temperature of the show’s tone and humour to his will. It’s been shaped in his image ever since.

That’s not to say he’s been the funniest host in recent years. He was better than the bizarrely charmless pairing of Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, but who wouldn’t be? Likewise innocuous US talk show stars such as Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon.

He’s not as good as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler , though, who hit the sweet spot between bitter acidity and joyful froth that Gervais has always missed.

Blessedly, they’ll be returning to host this year’s virtual Globes on 28 February.

To celebrate the show’s impending return, we’ve collated 15 of the funniest gags and zingers from Globes hosts of the past 11 ceremonies – from withering jokes at James Cameron’s expense, to remarks about Scientology that will have probably gone through a team of lawyers in advance of being spoken aloud.

Ricky Gervais on the maligned Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie caper The Tourist (2011)

“It was a big year for 3D movies: Toy Story , Despicable Me , Tron . It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional – except the characters in The Tourist . I feel bad about that joke because I haven’t even seen TheTourist ... Who has?”

“I’d like to quash this ridiculous rumour going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish. That is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes.”

Ricky Gervais on famous religions (2011)

“Also not nominated: I Love You, Philip Morris . Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then.”

Amy Poehler on Zero Dark Thirty ’s uncertain stance on torture (2013)

“Kathryn Bigelow is nominated tonight. I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty , but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.”

Tina Fey on Matthew McConaughey (2014)

“For his role in Dallas Buyers Club , he lost 45 pounds, or what actresses call ‘being in a movie’.”

Amy Poehler on 12 Years a Slave (2014)

“One of the most nominated films this year is 12 Years a Slave . I loved 12 Years a Slave , and I can honestly say that after seeing that film, I will never look at slavery the same way again.”

Tina Fey on Leonardo DiCaprio (2014)

“And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Tina Fey on George Clooney (2015)

“George Clooney married Amal Almuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an adviser to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”

Tina Fey on the presence of Joaquin Phoenix (2015)

“Joaquin Phoenix is nominated for Inherent Vice , but obviously he isn’t here tonight because he has said publicly that – quote – ‘Award shows are total and utter bull-’ Oh! Hey, Joaquin!”

Ricky Gervais on having to introduce Mel Gibson, whom he mocked in 2010 (2016)

“Listen, I’m sure it’s embarrassing for both of us. I blame NBC for this terrible situation. Mel blames… we know who Mel blames. I still feel a bit bad for it. Mel’s forgotten all about it apparently, that’s what drinking does. I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out. So: I’d rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than with Bill Cosby.”

Seth Meyers on The Shape of Water (2018)

“When I first heard about a film where a woman falls in love with a hideous monster, I thought it was a Woody Allen movie.”

Ricky Gervais on representation at the Globes (2020)

“Many talented people of colour were snubbed in major categories. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that because the Hollywood Foreign Press are all very, very racist.”

Johnny Depp Confronts Ricky Gervais About Golden Globes Joke (Video)

Johnny Depp may be getting the last laugh. But Ricky Gervais is also getting the last laugh on his last laugh.

At the 2011 Golden Globes, host Gervais took biting swipes at many of the stars in the audience. One joke took a jab at Depp and Angelina Jolie , who had both starred in The Tourist. “It seems like everything this year was three dimensional – except the characters in The Tourist ,” Gervais said. The camera then panned to a not-happy Depp in the audience.

Depp is not one to forget when he’s been mocked, apparently. The Rum Diary actor’s anger at Gervais is all in good fun however, as he’ll appear on Gervais’ new show, Life’s Too Short , which will debut on Nov. 10 on BBC2, and then on HBO in February 2012.

Gervais and Steven Merchant ’s new show follows Warwick Davis , a working little person, as he tries to make it in the entertainment industry.

In the preview clip, Davis brings Depp to meet Gervais and Merchant, and the conversation quickly turns to the Globes.

Depp does a little name dropping, mentioning that he’s working on a film with director Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter (“She thinks you’re an idiot,” Depp tells Gervais.)

Gervais asks Depp is he’s done something to offend him.

“What do you mean? Like trashing me in front of 200 million people at the Golden Globes?” responds Depp.

“I actually got together with a few pals after the awards, and we wrote some jokes about you,” says Depp.

“I want you to know this, and I want you to carry this with you for the rest of your days: No one makes fun of Tim Allen on my watch, and gets away with it.”

Depp is just one of the many stars who will appear in the show, including Steve Carrel, Sting and Cat Deeley.
